CALMER DAYS
Dear Editor, We want to thank everyone who has given so generously GET £34,000 TAR and supported our aim to raise £30,000 to purchase a second caravan at Trecco Bay and donate it to LATCH - the Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity. Any donations can be made through Just Giving Karavan 4 The Kidz, or contact us through our Karavan 4 The Kidz Facebook page or Emyr Owen branch of LATCH page – where you’ll find more information about Latch and a list of different fundraising dates so you can get involved. The fundraising has gone so well, and amazingly our running total has now reached £26,000! We have decided to increase our target to £34,000 and in doing so, we can incorporate decking around the caravan. This will be so beneficial to assist those children who may have disabilities due to the cancer or its treatment. Thank you again for ALL your kind donations and also thanks to Lloyds Bank, Julie David and The Swan in Nottage for their considerable donation, Porthcawl Fire Station for the very successful car wash, Porthcawl Health & Fitness Club, Porthcawl Butchers and all the local businesses involved in the Easter Giveaway Raffle, Heol Fach Surgery, The 4th Bridgend Guides, Alison Thomas and the Cardiff University Volleyball team. If we could ask for one last drive we would be incredibly grateful, knowing that more children who have been diagnosed with the awful disease that cancer is, and their families will benefit from spending fun time together. Maybe you could participate in this upcoming bike ride or sponsor one of the riders? On 30th April, Dougy Burgess (07877891954), Mike Sims (simms. m2@sky.com), Gary Walford and Lisa Hier are organising a cycle from Brecon to the Greenacres, where there will be a completion party. There will be transport and refreshments on route for the riders. It’s a £20 entry. If you would like more information on the ride or how to sponsor a rider please contact the guys above. Many thanks again for your amazing support. Karavan 4 the Kidz

PATIENT CENTRED CARE
CLOUDSCAPES
Dear Editor, The phrase ‘patient centred care’ is frequently said but how often do we, as patients, feel that we have a voice and can influence the quality of care that we and our loved ones receive? Nine out of 10 patients who go to hospital will see a radiographer. Either a diagnostic radiographer who produces images such as x-rays, CT or ultrasound scans, or a therapeutic radiographer who uses radiation to treat cancer. The Society and College of Radiographers wants more people to join its Public & Patient Liaison Group, which is made up of patients and carers. Members of the group can influence the radiography profession about the issues that are important to them. If readers go to the ‘About Radiography’ section of the Society’s website at www.sor.org, they can read more about the group and its work. Or they can email Liz Robinson at lizr@sor.org and she will provide more information and answer questions. It is important that patients use this opportunity to share in decision making about the care and treatment that they receive. Thank you very much for the opportunity to ask your readers to take part in this important work. Richard Evans, Chief Executive Officer, The Society & College of Radiographers Philip Plant, Chair of the Public & Patient Liaison Group
Dear Mr Editor, Taking to the skies with ‘Cloudscapes’. Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl
HONEY BEE HIVE LOCATION WANTED IN PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, I wonder if the residents of Porthcawl could help me in an important task? We all know how important the honey bee is and we all love the taste of honey. But getting a suitable hive location that is safe and sustainable is proving difficult. I am looking for a plot of land that is the size of two regular size dinning tables. The plot of land would be near to a field, away from children and animals such as horses. Maybe you walk past a piece of land regularly and think to yourself - that could do with cleaning up and some nice flowers planted? It may be in your large garden or a disused piece of land somewhere in Porthcawl. If you do know or would like to help my cause - please get in touch with me urgently. I have no time to spare, it’s swarming season soon! I have the hive and all the equipment but no suitable location. Please help evansneville@aol.com or 07584 883520. Neville Evans

Dear Editor, My wife and I noticed a dead Porpoise on the beach Tuesday 16th February. Sadly washed up on the beach in front of the lifeguard cabin on Newton Beach. This was a very sad sight, with the porpoise partly eaten. We just wanted to highlight this as my wife and I are part of the Porthcawl Porpoise Watch and like to sea these beautiful creatures out in the sea - not dead on beach. Porpoise was about 3 ft in length. Alun & Heather Davies Newton, Porthcawl

Letters MARATHON RUN FOR RNLI
Have your say - email info@seasidenews.co.uk
THE REST, PORTHCAWL
Dear Editor, I took a photo of The Rest Holiday Home back in September 2015 and thought the readers of Seaside News might appreciate viewing it? Such a beautiful old building - especially on a clear starry night! Shaun Child, Kenfig Hill Dear Editor, Porthcawl RNLI helmsman Ross Purchase and his friend Daniel Bridge are to run the Great Welsh Marathon in Llanelli on 17th April 2016. Their aim is to complete the marathon in four hours and raise money for the RNLI charity. Thirty three year old Ross, who like thirty five year old Daniel, lives in Porthcawl, said “I have been a volunteer lifeboat crew member for 12 years and thought this would be an excellent way to give something back to the RNLI. Our joint aim is to raise in excess of £850 from this event.” Both Ross and Daniel have been training for the past six months and they can be seen regularly running in RNLI vests helping to promote their cause. Daniel who is a local builder said, “Ross and I first discussed this idea whilst dropping off our children at West Park Primary School in Nottage. We are both looking forward to running our first marathon and raising money too.” To support both with a donation and help them in their aim to raise valuable money for the RNLI charity you can log onto justgiving/ross-purchase or text Runa59 followed by £1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 to 70070. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
Recently, a group of 36 Year 12 students attended the launch of the Seren Network for Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot and Powys at Llandarcy Academy of Sport. The Network is an initiative by the Welsh Government aimed at supporting Wales’ brightest students in their applications to the UK’s leading universities. Students were selected on the basis of their excellent GCSE results, and Porthcawl’s cohort of 36 was by far the largest attending – a testament to the outstanding achievement of our pupils. We were addressed by the Minister for Education, Huw Lewis, and the pupils then selected two workshops from a range on offer, some subject-based and some offering advice on successful UCAS applications. One of our pupils, Callum Evans, volunteered to be interviewed about his ambitions and about the Seren Network and his interview now appears on the Network’s social media pages. We look forward to the next stage where the Seren Hub provides opportunities for challenging subject-based workshops, meeting like-minded students from other schools, advice on university applications and links with leading universities. Porthcawl Comprehensive already has an exceptionally high number of students who receive offers from Oxford, Cambridge and the other “Russell Group” universities: of last year’s 132 UCAS applicants, 31% took up these places, the average state school percentage being around 15%. March 11th saw the entire school walk down to the Grand Pavilion in the sunshine, to enjoy our Annual Eisteddfod. With the senior competitions being held in the morning and the juniors’ in the afternoon, pupils and staff enjoyed an extravaganza of young talent with both traditional and non-traditional events taking place all day. The standard of entries for both on-stage and off-stage events this year was exceptionally high and a massive thank you goes to the pupils and parents for supporting this event. The results were as follows: Overall Eisteddfod Result: 1st Morgannwg – 665, 2nd Dyfed – 482, 3rd Gwynedd – 465, 4th Powys – 430 Junior Eisteddfod Champion Jamie Harrowing Senior Eisteddfod Champion Lydia Pickett Senior Drama Competition Conor Farrell-John Winner of Junior Welsh Chair Holly Clatworthy Winner of Junior English Chair Ocean Poultney-Maddy Winner of Senior Welsh Chair Rhiannon Griffiths Eve Lugg Winner of Senior English Chair Caitlin Whiteley Well done everyone! PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS We started this month with the Formula 1 in schools South Wales final at the Waterfront Museum in Swansea. It was an incredible day made all the better by the fantastic achievements of our team. Congratulations to Tegan, Grace, Chantal, Erin, Ffion and Zane who not only designed the fastest car in the whole of South Wales but also came second overall. On the day Porthcawl Power was the only car to complete the course in less than one second, which is an achievement to be very proud of. We will now be flying the flag as we represent Wales in the UK National Finals where we will be racing the best teams from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We also have an update on our seeds, which we will be using in our rocket science experiment. They are now in the UK after hitching a ride with astronaut Scott Kelly. They left the International Space Station on the 1st March and then made their way back to the UK via Kazakhstan, Russia and finally NASA headquarters in Houston. The experiment starts on the 19th April so we should be getting the seeds very soon! Andrew Wood Head Teacher

SCHOOLS BRYNTIRION COMPRENHENSIVE TRIP TO AUSCHWITZ On the 14th February, 42 Year 11 students from the Religious Studies GCSE classes from Bryntirion Comprehensive visited the infamous death camps of AuschwitzBirkenhau in Poland. The students learnt how over 1.5 million people (mainly Jews) were killed in the gas chambers during World War Two there. The students were given a guided tour of the camps and saw the ‘left over suitcases’ that were taken from the prisoners as they left the cramped cattle train wagons. The students also saw large collections of shoes, spectacles and Jewish prayer shawls that the SS guards confiscated from their victims. The students also had an opportunity to visit one of the huts that the prisoners had to sleep in and were horrified to see how many people were expected to sleep in each of the four tier bunk beds there. The students also visited the famous Oscar Schlindler’s factory where over 300 Jews were given sanctuary from the death camps by being given work there. The students also heard relatives of survivors from Auschwitz telling remarkable stories of courage and faith during the dark moments of the Holocaust. The students are now inspired to tell others in the school about the ‘Lessons to be learnt from The Holocaust’ through the means of assemblies in school to the younger pupils. NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS Sadly, we will be saying goodbye to Head Teacher Sue O’Halloran in July, who has decided to take up a new post at The Central South Consortium where she is currently on secondment. She will be sorely missed and a hard act to follow. Another member of staff, Mr Gallagher, also departs after 12 years with ‘Team Nottage’ to take up post as Deputy Head Teacher at Newton Primary. We wish them well. During March our fundraising activities included Bandanas for Brain Tumour Day and Sport Relief. The NSPCC also returned to school to congratulate children for their efforts in raising over £1,600 for the charity. Congratulations to the team of Stella Shirley, Libby Roach, Sam Song and Samuel Weaver who came joint first in Bridgend’s Road Safety Challenge. They now progress to the finals in April. More congratulations go to Anousha Cronje and Libby Mumford, who were victorious in the World Book Day Quiz held at Porthcawl Library. They now go forward to the ‘Super Final’ in June. The Eisteddfod was won by Ty Suffolk and Natalia Furness, of Ty de Londres, was crowned Bard for her wonderful poem entitled ‘Celebrate Wales.’ K Townley Seaside News | 18
NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL We have enjoyed many events this month including celebrating World Book Day, where everyone dressed up as their favourite book character. We also took part in Fairtrade Fortnight and held a Fair Trade Day. Last week Nursery and Reception held their first Reading Cafes. Many family members attended to support the children and had lots of fun! The café consisted of having a story followed by plenty of exciting activities based on it. It is debatable who had the most fun - children or grown ups! We are now looking forward to the climax of our topic ‘Dragon Tales’ with a huge banquet. Once again, family members are welcome to join us and might even be treated to a lovely surprise! Year 5 and 6 have studied another exciting unit from the ‘Cornerstones’ topic resource entitled ‘Gallery’. We have focused on developing the children’s artistic and creative skills. The unit culminated in an open day where they planned, organised and led their own gallery event for other children and parents to enjoy! The event was a great success and our pupils were so excited to see crowds of people enjoying their amazing artistic creations! R John Head Teacher
PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Spring was certainly sprung this March with a busy week of St David’s Day, Book Fayre, World Book Day and Welsh culture trips to Cardiff Museum, Principality Stadium and Gower Heritage. Pupils at Pil Primary School celebrated World Book Day with a range engaging activities. During the day Harriet, the local librarian held workshops, a ‘books are cool’ assembly and book aerobics. The Roald Dahl book quiz was a huge success where governors questioned pupils on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and George’s Marvellous Medicine. Congratulations to the Year 3 and 5 winning teams! Pupils benefitted from the buddy reading sessions and won prizes in a reading raffle for their efforts throughout the term. A sponsored Ready Steady Read was also held during the half term and raised over £600 for topic books. N Pryce Head Teacher

SCHOOLS SPRING NEWS AT CYNFFIG
NEWS FROM ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH
Spring time at Cynffig is always a busy and exciting time of year as together we plan and prepare for summer success. This term we are extremely proud that two of our teachers Mr Rogers (Maths), and Mr Thomas (English), have been chosen to deliver Central South’s revision programme, ‘Count On, Write On’. The selection of our teachers for their subject knowledge and proven examination techniques is another endorsement of the excellent teaching and learning experience we practice and prioritise at Cynffig. Our Eisteddfod yet again illustrated the breadth of our students’ talents. Congratulations to Joshua Urch and Molly Braham who won the ‘Chair’ and ‘Crown’ respectively. Cynffig is a true community school and this term we have once again welcomed pupils from our Primary partner schools. Students enjoyed the opportunity to meet our teachers as well as make new friends whilst conducting experiments using cereal! Congratulations must go to Cynffig’s Basketball team who fought stiff competition to qualify for the Welsh Basketball Championships in May. We wish our team the very best of luck. Cynffig students have worked tirelessly writing, filming and editing their news for ‘BBC School Report’. Pencoed Comprehensive’s Eco Team have taken part in the ‘Schools for Resilience’ Europe-wide project in partnership with the Field Studies Council. The project encourages schools to work in collaboration with their local community to improve an aspect of their environment. Pencoed Comprehensive’s Eco Team selected ‘Waste’ and as part of their project work planned and implemented a clean up of the River Ewenny that flows alongside the school grounds. Local MP Huw Irranca Davies showed his support for the project along with the Deputy Manager of Pencoed Co-op and a colleague. Parents and grandparents of the students and other interested locals also turned up to ‘muck in’. A total of 15 green bags of waste were collected over the three hour period. Mr Pownall, Head of Geography and ESDGC Co-ordinator at Pencoed Comprehensive has expressed his delight in how enthusiastic both students and members of the local community were in getting the job done and hopes that this will trigger future joint ventures. ST CLARE’S, PORTHCAWL Pupils and staff at St Clare’s in Porthcawl were thrilled when Jonathan Sinclair, Managing Director of the Sinclair Group, paid a special visit to their school assembly. Mr Sinclair explained that last year was the 70th anniversary of the Sinclair Group, the largest and most successful car retail group in Wales. To help them celebrate, the Sinclair Group had invited local children to draw, sketch or paint a picture of what they thought a car would look like in the year 2085. Ten-year old Evie Morgan, a talented pupil at Porthcawl Independent school, St Clare’s, was surprised and delighted to hear she had won the very special prize of a framed rugby shirt signed by the whole World Cup Squad and a beautiful framed version of her design. She’d been wondering why her parents were coming to a school assembly! Seaside News | 20
Since January, we have been fundraising to develop a sensory and soft play facility for the pupils in the Observation Classes. The community have been extremely supportive and all donations have been gratefully received with the total to date being £3,800. The target of £10,000 is now achievable. Our very young, enthusiastic rugby team has enjoyed success on the field this season, due mainly to the coaching skills of ex Fijian International Tevita Manaseitava. His expertise has paid dividend this season and the School Rugby Team have performed extremely well. We would like to thank him for his commitment this season and look forward to our annual Ian Thomas Sevens Tournament during the summer term. The Year 4 pupils have been involved with ‘Ospreys in the Community’ in conjunction with Aspire2Be. The purpose of the scheme was to inspire and engage pupils in becoming digitally competent with a focus upon enhancing their Literacy, Numeracy and Cross Curricular skills. The pupils have had the opportunity to apply the digital skills in class and whilst on educational visits to the Liberty Stadium and Sony. The scheme has been extremely successful and has had a positive impact in engaging our pupils in becoming digitally competent. Donna Bowditch

TECHNOLOGY Q. I see so many offers for broadband and I’m not sure
which one to take? There are many different speeds/ download packages available which also have various offerings so I’m really confused which one to pick? Thanks Heidi, Porthcawl.
A.
Hi Heidi, In the UK domestic market, broadband is primarily provided by two companies: BT and Virgin. Whilst BT are the biggest broadband provider in the UK, they resell their products to the likes of Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet (actually owned by BT) whereas Virgin do not resell their services to other providers. Virgin’s coverage doesn’t reach to Porthcawl so we can discount that in this instance. Depending on your needs will dictate your choice of which broadband package you will chose whilst who supplies you that service will be down to personal choice. Once the broadband is installed the only other time you are going to speak to your provider will be when things go wrong. So for me, customer service will need to stand head and shoulders above the rest. The only two companies I can say which have excellent customer services are Sky and Plusnet. That said, if the broadband never fails then this won’t be a factor to consider so the most reliable service provider is BT but their customer service is appalling. When it comes to picking a package, this will need to be decided by how many people live in the house. For example, if there are two adults and two teenage children living in the house, there is a potential to have 4 mobiles phones, 2 Tablets and 2 laptops. If the kids are anything like mine, they will be streaming stuff from the internet constantly from iPlayer, ITV Player, Netflix and Youtube. If you work from home then you too will have a requirement to have a reliable broadband connection and it will need to be good enough when the kids are on half term and you still need to work from home. In this scenario, I would go for an Unlimited Package. What this means you are not restricted by how much you download in a month. In a busy household I would expect around 50-75gb a month – plusnet offer a package with unlimited download for £14.99 per month (first six months for free). If your needs are less, you can save money by opting for a metered package. This is where the provider allocated a predetermined amount (measured in GigaBytes). BT offer a package like this for as little as £4.50 per month and this comes with a 20Gb limit. If you go over this limit, you will then pay £4 for each additional Gigabyte you use. In terms of download speed, this is a measurement which indicates how quick data downloads from the internet to your device, whether it be your PC/Tablet/Sky box etc. My rule of thumb here is the faster the better but there is a price implication here. The fast download speed you can get from a service delivered via a telephone line is 76mb per second. Sky and BT offer this package and its starts at £30 per month. For the most part people are more than happy with the accepted standard, which is 38mb per second, this is more than adequate for 99% of households with five or more devices and Plusnet do this for £14.99 per month. To give you some idea on how fast stuff downloads, say you wanted to stream an hour long TV program, the size of that file is usually around 2gb if we are assuming it is High Definition (which most stuff is these days). On a normal ADSL circuit running at around 20mb per second, this would take around 14 minutes, on the standard fibre connection running at around 38mb per second it would take around 7 minutes and on the top tier Sky/BT Fibre connection running at 76mb per second it would download in around 4 minutes. email: david@westprime.co.uk with your questions
The other element to factor into your cost is a telephone line. You will need one to deliver the broadband service to your house. Line rental for a standard BT line is £12.99 but this can be free if you take a BT Broadband connection over a 12 month period. The other providers will also provide you with a telephone line if you do not already have one and they will offer you a deal if you ask – don’t be afraid to push for this as they want your business. If you want to avoid the additional cost of the telephone line, the other alternative is using 4G but in Porthcawl, coverage is patching at best. If you do happen to live in one of the area where the 4G signal is strong you can use 4G Personal Hotspot Device. In short, these are small wifi enabled dongles which you connect your laptop/tablet to via wifi which then in turn connects to the 4G mobile phone network and then onto the internet. These devices offer a top up facility whereby you purchase Gigabytes as you go, normally in 5gb, 10gb, 25gb packages. To get more info about pricing on these packages, use the search term ‘Mobile Broadband Packages’ and you will see EE, Vodafone and O2 all sell these devices/packages. David, Westprime

News COUNCIL BUDGET CONFIRMS NEW SEA DEFENCES FOR TOWN BEACH – AND MORE It’s well known that Bridgend County Borough Council is having to deliver huge financial savings against a backdrop of increasingly limited resources, so with a net budget for 2016-17 of £255m and a capital programme of £44m, I was pleased that the authority will be able to invest in significant projects such as new sea defences at town beach, a new household recycling centre at Pyle, the development of two new Extra Care facilities, traffic and transport safety improvements outside local schools and more. Unfortunately, the authority also has to make £7.5m budget reductions and increase council tax by 3.9 per cent - the equivalent of an extra 94p a week for a Band D property. This is never an easy or welcome decision to have to make, but it’s necessary in order to set a balanced budget, manage inescapable pressures, provide investment and protect essential services. As part of this, I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the ‘Shaping Bridgend’s Future’ consultation. We listened to what you said and incorporated your feedback into our plans, and this has helped protect essential frontline services, deliver efficiencies and develop improvements in the sort of areas that residents feel matter most. POLE POSITION FOR PORTHCAWL’S ENGINEERING WHIZZ KIDS With the Ford Engine Plant playing such a key role in the local economy and Aston Martin’s investment in a new super-car plant just up the road in St Athan, it’s clear there has never been a better time for local children to take an early interest in the science, technology, engineering and maths skills that are so critical in the automotive industry. So I was delighted to hear about local pupils driving their way to success in a national Formula 1 based challenge. After designing a model car using computer software, a team from Porthcawl Primary School beat off competition from 24 other schools to top the South Wales podium in this year’s ‘Formula 1 in Schools – Jaguar Primary School Challenge’. When their super-lightweight balsa wood car was propelled using an air canister it zoomed along a 30 metre track in less than a second, clocking up a speed of up to 85mph! There were also awards for Coety Primary School having the best team image, while Mynydd Cynffig Primary School were named best car manufacturers. The competition has really captured young imaginations and the Porthcawl team will now go forward to the national finals in Coventry in June. WHY THE SEASIDE IS SO IMPORTANT A NEW strategy to promote seaside resorts like Porthcawl and unlock their potential has been launched by Welsh Conservatives. Our aim is to boost small businesses in coastal resorts by extending business rate relief and improving access to finance. We also want to offer communities a right to bid for local assets like pubs that are important to the locality - this already happens in England. The council would also have to provide facilities to a minimum standard including toilets, disabled access and parking. Most importantly, we want to encourage organisations to apply for funding from the UK government’s Coastal Communities Fund, which the Welsh Government has dismally failed to promote. Many organisations will be unaware of its existence yet it could play a huge role in supporting projects that unlock the economic potential of our seaside. It is specially designed to help resorts became year-round destinations by supporting the tourism sector and sustaining the jobs within it. Porthcawl should be one of the places that benefits from the next round of funding. Lastly, we would abolish Visit Wales, which is embedded within Welsh Government, and replace it with an arms-length body to drive the tourist industry forward. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com
PARTNERSHIP IS KEY TO REGENERATION SUCCESS Since becoming Cabinet member for regeneration, I’ve been repeatedly struck by how many hurdles need to be overcome before developments can happen on the ground or while a project is under construction. A wide range of skills, enormous determination to overcome barriers and an ability to work in partnership are essential for all participants. The progress of recent years is testament to the determination of all partners to build on the highly successful development of Porthcawl Marina, which was itself a partnership between the council and the EU. Working with the Coastal Communities Fund, Harbourside CIC is developing further enhancements, and key town centre buildings are being transformed in partnership with the council, property owners, CADW and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Enormous efforts are required to stage iconic events such as the Elvis Festival, the developing New Romantics and Rockabilly Festivals and next year’s Senior Open, and these all involve event promoters, Welsh Government, county borough and town councils, the police, businesses and residents. The sheer scale of ambition for Porthcawl requires everyone to work together. After all, partners may not always agree, but we are still stronger together and can achieve far more working in partnership than we can alone. AN END TO HOSPITAL BED CLOSURES, PLEASE Hospital bed closures in Wales risk effecting our elderly the most. Bed numbers in community hospitals in Wales fell by 25% over five years, while health boards in Wales are not meeting targets for extra staff in the community. Inadequate bed provision means our elderly end up getting ‘stuck’ on inappropriate hospital wards, when in fact it is time to start planning for their discharge home. There is also direct link between the closure of NHS hospital beds and the burgeoning waiting times throughout the system. Its common sense really. Without an available bed, a patient needing to be admitted to hospital via A&E will face a delay whilst waiting for one to become available. This in turn puts pressures on the A&E department, which means that patients have to wait longer to be seen by a doctor. It also means that unfortunately, many emergency cases are kept waiting outside the A&E department in an ambulance, as there is insufficient capacity further up the line. A Welsh Conservative government would stop further bed closures. Closures are symptomatic of poor management and have no benefit – all they do is create bottlenecks. Their knock-on effect renders any short-term saving a false economy. Dr Altaf Hussain AM Welsh Conservative Assembly Member for South Wales West

It’s a busy time for the Harbourside team. Our SeaQuest events continue to prove very popular, and we’ve recently held two successful talks at the HiTide Inn, the latest on Whales and Porpoise, which was well attended. We’ll be scheduling more talks over the coming months and will advertise these soon. Keep an eye on our website: www.porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk for more details. We are delighted to announce our partnership with Techniquest, and the arrival of a specially-designed mobile Aquarium and Coastal Science and Discovery exhibits that will enhance learning about the coast around us. We’ll be showing the exhibits at future SeaQuest events, including those in local schools and local venues over the summer. We’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Rachel Kinsella to our team, as Coastal Science & Discovery Assistant. Rachel is a graduate who has previously volunteered with our SeaQuest projects. We are looking for volunteers for our SeaQuest division. Do you have an interest in our local coast and marine life and have a few hours to spare? News INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Tuesday 8th March marked International Women’s Day. I was delighted to be joined by Bryntirion 6th form pupil Fion who shadowed me for part of the day and toured Number 10. My colleague Jess Phillips MP gave an extraordinarily powerful speech reciting the name of every woman killed since last International Women’s Day, the age and social range of the victim’s shows that violence against women has no one age or perpetrator. If you can I would highly recommend watching. I am the 264th woman ever to be elected to Parliament and Maria Miller, former pupil at Brynteg Comprehensive School and now MP for Basingstoke was the 265th. There are currently 191 female MPs in Parliament, 29% of all MPs and women fill seven out of twenty two Cabinet Posts. The total number of women to have been elected to the House of Commons since 1918 remains lower than the number of men (459) sitting in Parliament today. It is easy to think of International Women’s Day relates to women in the third world. These figures serve as a reminder that although we have come a long way since 1918 - there is still some way to go for women in Britain. Madeleine Moon MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM I was delighted to read in a recent newsletter produced by Porthcawl Museum and Historical Society that Bridgend County Borough Council has offered heads of terms for a 30 year lease of the Old Police Station to the Museum. Eight months ago, a deal was reached to secure the future of this grade two listed building which houses Porthcawl Museum and the town’s Arts Society. This latest development is great news and will mean that the Museum can look forward to the future with a renewed sense of confidence, create new displays and presentations and plan improvements to the building. The Museum is a popular asset in the town and has widespread support. Some of the improvements include plans to re-wire the southern part of the building once the asbestos has been removed, then to re-furnish it as a function room, computer suite and research library. The Museum is a fantastic asset and adding these elements will certainly increase footfall to the museum. Also, it is good to see that the Museum and Art Society retain the full support of Porthcawl Town Council and that they are making funding available for the museum to keep improving.

NUMBERS OF CANCELLED OPERATIONS STILL TOO HIGH There have been nearly 4,000 operations cancelled at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend over the past 18 months. Figures obtained by Plaid Cymru under the Freedom of Information Act show that, for 2014/15 and the first three months of 2015/16, there were 3,909 operations that did not go ahead at the hospital. The reasons given are many, and vary from administrative error to staff unavailable, from procedure no longer needed to list overrun. A significant number do not go ahead because ward beds are unavailable or there are no staff. Although these figures are lower than in other hospitals across South Wales West, they point to issues that Plaid Cymru is eager to resolve in its manifesto for this May’s Assembly elections. If Plaid Cymru is fortunate enough to form a government in Wales, we have outlined in our manifesto how we would strengthen our NHS by employing a further 1,000 doctors and 5,000 additional nurses. Our figures stack up – the only thing preventing Wales from having a world class NHS is the Welsh Government’s lack of ambition and ‘light touch’ where local health boards are concerned. We believe this does a huge disservice to the overwhelming majority of first rate medical staff we already have. The bald truth is that we need more of them to meet the demands of an aging population. Now it is down to you. You can vote Labour for more of the same on our wards. Or you can vote Plaid Cymru, for a radical and improved way of delivering health care to your families. BETHAN JENKINS AM Plaid Cymru www.bethanjenkins.org
MORE MONEY FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS As a school governor, I know how important it is that our children get the best start in life. This is why education is a key aspect of my campaign to win the Welsh Assembly Election on the 5th of May in Bridgend and Porthcawl. While some schools in our community are doing very well, others are falling behind schools in the rest of Britain and the rest of the world. This is the reason many people have highlighted to me their concerns about education standards in Wales. As a result, I am backing the Welsh Conservatives’ policy to fund our schools directly. By cutting out the middleman, statefunded schools could get hundreds of extra pounds per pupil. This means that schools the size of Porthcawl Comprehensive or Bryntirion Comprehensive could expect to get hundreds of thousands more pounds in additional funding. Funding schools directly will help eliminate wasteful bureaucracy and ensure the optimum amount of funds reach the front line. I believe that teachers and head teachers have an intricate knowledge of the pupils and the community needs and are best placed to manage the schools and their financial resources more efficiently. A REFLECTION ON SEVENTEEN YEARS AS AN AM As of May this year I will have been an Assembly Member for seventeen years. It has been a privilege to have represented this area. That does not mean that this article is a valedictory, far from it. I fully intend to be back. But regular elections do enable me to reflect on my time so far as well as to look to the future. In those seventeen years I have been involved in many campaigns, not least the fight to regenerate Porthcawl, against the closure of Bridgend law courts, working with the trustees of the Porthcawl Museum to keep it open, with campaigners to retain full accident and emergency, paediatric, neo natal, and obstetric services at Princess of Wales Hospital and against the imposition of excessive service charges on tenants by Valleys to Coast. I have also taken up thousands of individual cases. There is no greater satisfaction than helping somebody get the treatment they need, repairs to their homes or a blue badge they need. So I just wanted to use this article to thank every one of you for giving me the opportunity to do this job, and to look forward to serving you further in the future.

NO MORE BED CLOSURES During the past decade, the Welsh Labour Government has closed a fifth of all hospital beds in Wales. As a result, we have a massive shortage of beds, which is at the heart of many problems with the Welsh NHS. Elective operations are repeatedly cancelled because no bed is available for the patient after surgery. Just weeks ago, all nonemergency surgery was cancelled at local hospitals because beds were full of elderly patients needing hospitalisation. The equivalent of one in seven people in Wales is now on an NHS waiting list. Another consequence is long delays at A&E departments because they are full of people who need to be admitted but for whom there are no beds. Meanwhile, outside our hospitals, including The Princess of Wales, convoys of ambulances - sometimes as many as 15 at a time – wait with patients on board because there is no room for them inside. Is it any wonder we have the worst ambulance response times in the UK when they are off-line for hours at a time stuck outside hospitals. Enough is enough. Welsh Conservatives are calling for an end to bed and hospital closures. And for some beds to be put back wherever possible. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The gospel of Luke tells a story of a man named Zacchaeus. Short people love this story, but rich people find it a little more challenging. The short guy refuses to get shut out. He climbs a tree to get to see Jesus. And what does he get in return? Jesus chooses to stay with Zacchaeus over everyone else. But then what happened? People got mad at Jesus because Zacchaeus was a tax collector who ripped off the poor to support his own lavish lifestyle. They thought that Jesus should stay with someone of better character. But once Jesus chose him, Zacchaeus promised to give half his possessions to the poor. And Jesus responded, “Today salvation has come to this house.” I imagine there were a lot of shocked people that day that had written Zacchaeus off as beyond redemption. But they were wrong. Who have we written off? Who do you/we see as hopeless? Who do we think is beyond redemption? Nobody is beyond God’s redemption. Everyone gets to grow and change. It’s at the heart of the Christian gospel. God Bless, Rev Lewis Rees Minister to Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

FEATURES NEWS FROM THE TALBOT
PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD
Following a hectic few weeks of fundraising including our Fashion Show and St David’s Day lunch, the Talbot is looking forward to completing their refurbishment of the Rees Centre. The kitchen is being fitted out with electrical items and kitchen cupboards. This project has been much talked about, and we have been proud to show off each development to our members. At each stage we have said this is what we have done so far, but wait until ... Well, now the ‘wait until’ is over and we will soon be moving all our crockery, glassware, cutlery and pots and pans (and the cook!) from our little galley kitchen to our new Cegin Rees (cegin is Welsh for kitchen). Our fashion show involved seven local ladies who walked the catwalk to model clothes from Bon Marche of Bridgend. And Julie our cook and her kitchen team, served a three course lunch of leek and potato soup, faggots dinner and edible iced daffodil and leak covered sponges with custard followed, with entertainment by Mr Ivor Williams of Porthcawl. Our guests of honour were representatives of Lloyds Bank, Port Talbot. My personal thanks go to all who helped and attended the events. Cheryl Butcher
This has been a sad time for the Guild with the death of Beryl Davies, a long time committee member and secretary who gave a lot to the guild and enjoyed everything the guild had to offer. She will be much missed. We welcomed Ceri Joseph once again – this time telling us about the short life of Dic Penderyn in her inimitable style. An enjoyable 62nd Birthday Lunch was held at the Grove Golf Club with a beautiful presentation of photographs by Mr Brian Haberfield. All our groups have been in action and the committee is busy arranging activities for the coming year. Our meeting this month is on April 13th, 2pm, at All Saints Church Hall when we shall have a repeat visit from Mr Alan Badmington, so interesting last year, this time on ‘How Old Did You Say You Were?’ That sounds intriguing so do come along to hear about it. ‘WOW!’ SIGNAL THEORY 40 years ago, we received a mysterious signal from space lasting for 72 seconds and it was so unusual that it was dubbed the Wow! Signal. It has puzzled scientists ever since, leading some to suggest it might have been aliens. Now, scientists think that the signal might have originated from passing comets which were not known at the time, but their position in 1977 was remarkably close to the location that the Wow! signal came from. The Big Ear telescope in Ohio was looking in the direction of Sagittarius when it detected the signal. It was clearly of extraterrestrial origin and worth follow-up observations. The same region has been observed since, but the observation has never been replicated. For that reason, researchers suggested that it was a one-off event, something passing in the area of the sky at the time. We now know that two comets were in the area, and both contained a lot of water. UV light from the Sun breaks the water, liberating hydrogen. Comets would have to release a lot of hydrogen to produce a Wow! signal but next year one of the comets will return, and allow astronomers to test their theory. THANK YOU BRIDGEND COLLEGE Porthcawl Shout Forum would like to give a big Thank You to Bridgend College and its B Tech Art Students who have given their time, talent and interest to help our long journey to provide a significant memorial in Porthcawl to the victims of the Samtampa and Edward Prince of Wales disaster at Sker Point in April 1947. The tragedy is the greatest loss off civilian life on the Welsh coast in modern times and we are trying to commemorate the magnitude of the disaster and the unimaginable courage and valour shown by men and now women prepared to make the supreme sacrifice for others. All hands on the Liberty ship were lost, together with the complete crew of the Mumbles Lifeboat and a total of 47 seamen died that afternoon in a terrifying storm yet few residents and visitors are now aware of the tragedy. Art and Design students in Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, and possibly Cardiff and Vale College are taking part in the project and we are indebted to our Parton Carwyn Jones AM, Bridgend College Principal Simon Pirotte, Artistic Director Viv Buckley and Arts Lecturer Hilary Statts for their interest in the project. FEATURES ‘OUR TOMMY IN IRELAND’ April 24th will commemorate ‘The Easter Rising’ in Ireland. Fuelled by the granting of Irish Home Rule being delayed yet again, due to the war, insurgents took to the streets; primarily in Dublin. 1600 Irish Nationalists led by Patrick Pearse and James Connolly took over the GPO in Sackville Street and proclaimed an Irish Republic. At the time only 400 British soldiers were stationed in Dublin. Sergeant Thomas David, Bridgend House, Philadelphia Road, had been posted as part of the 6th Cavalry Reserve Regiment to the Malborough Barracks, Dublin, in December 1915. On April 24th, he was on the frontline. Following his posting to France, in 1919 Tom became the first secretary of ‘The Comrades of the Great War,’ here in Porthcawl, the precursor of the British Legion. Thomas David died on 22nd February 1936. His death certificate referred to the effects of gas, from his time in the Great War, as a cause. The full account of Tom’s life is just one of the Museum’s new exhibitions for 2016. Judith Shawe

FEATURES LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS
The other weekend Porthcawl Lions had a busy time around the town. On the Friday and Saturday club members were in John Street collecting for Marie Curie and on the Sunday they did a beach clean along the Boardwalk. The awful weather, particularly the high winds and the high tides, resulted in so much rubbish being washed up that it was decided that an out of season clean up was required. Unfortunately one of our octogenarian members, lion Frank, has been in hospital. Frank is the clubs’ long serving welfare officer and all members send best wishes to him and his family together with hopes for a good recovery. May Day Bank Holiday, Monday 2nd May, is the annual Porthcawl Lions May Fayre at All Saints church. The official opening is 11am and entrance is only £1.00. There will be plenty there for all the family including books, bric-a-brac and other stalls, indoor and outdoor games, entertainment and refreshments. More about the May Fayre and other forthcoming events as well as lots of other news about the Porthcawl Lions can be found on our website: porthcawllions.org.uk and membership secretary, Andrew, would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in helping out at Lions events or joining the club. John Cosson
2016 MARATHON MAN Andy writes... “When I got my place in the London Marathon 2016, I thought I would use the opportunity to raise some money for a good cause. Tools for Self Reliance sprang to mind as my Dad and his friends run a refurbishing workshop for the charity. Its great to see the kits they prepare to help tradespeople in Africa build businesses and livelihoods. Any support you can offer would be really welcome.” Ian Limbrick, Deputy Chief Executive of Tools For Self Reliance, says “We are absolutely delighted that Andy is going to be taking on the challenge of the London Marathon and raising funds for Tools for Self Reliance in the process! Andy is aiming for a time of 3.5 hours, and a fundraising target of £1,500 - we can’t help him with the first, but would love to enable him to reach the latter!” Andy’s dad, John, is the co-ordinator of our Bridgend Volunteer Group, which supports Tools for Self Reliance with fundraising and tool refurbishing, so he knows first hand how important our work is. WESTERN BAY HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE PROGRAMME LEADS THE WAY IN WALES! The Western Bay Health and Social Care Programme has led the way in Wales, by launching their first accessibility DisabledGo guide in Wales. Residents and visitors across Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea now have their own access guide providing detailed accessibility information to 350 venues. The guide will make a huge difference to disabled people and their families, enabling people to become more independent and take the guess work and worry of trying new places. It covers many different venues including leisure centres, libraries, restaurants, community centres, council buildings and shops with accessibility features from parking to toilets. Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO) provided invaluable help ensuring priority venues were included and identified which key disability and voluntary organisations needed to be consulted. BAVO’s Chief Executive Heidi Bennett said: “We all need to consider the access needs of disabled people. They have a right to experience the same services and social activities that everyone else takes for granted and very often that’s not the case. This directory will support disabled people’s independence through offering better information and greater choice.” You can find the guide at www.disabledgo.com Jane Savile - BAVO Photograph: BAVO, ELC and Disabled Go at launch of guide at Every Link Counts, Maesteg
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE NEWTON WI The March meeting was presided over by our president Pearl Mason. Lots of information about upcoming events: The annual Council Meeting in Port Talbot, The Link Meeting at the Hi Tide (both in May). Also plans are in hand for our annual days out, Llanelly House first on the list and so much more. As there was no speaker this month we entertained ourselves with a Beetle Drive, what a hilarious evening we had ending with delicious Welsh Cakes (thanks to all the cooks). The walking group had a most enjoyable walk around Nottage Village and Moor Lane, passing the historic St. Davids Well, the weather was glorious. We ended our walk at the Rose & Crown for a lovely lunch (as usual, thanks to Shirley for organising). Some of the Ladies of the Craft Class attended the Crochet Day held at Federation House, Port Talbot. The ladies found it most interesting and will be busy practicing their new found skills. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI March the 8th in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill was the venue once more for Mynydd Cynffig WI. We had two visitors to our meeting who were made to feel welcome. The meeting was chaired by our president Marjorie, minutes read out by our secretary Enid, WI business discussed and members informed of the various trips and competitions which have been arranged by Glamorgan Federation and events which we ourselves have arranged. We try to have something for everybody, those who are mobile and those who are not so, those who like to use their hands at crafting and those who like a more mind stretching occupation ie. scrabble. Those who like to go on walks and even those who like to sit and watch - we try to engage everybody. So call in and join us. The talk this month was ‘Magistrates Courts’ by Mrs Tipper, herself a Magistrate for many years. We learned many interesting facts about the Law Courts and how they operated. Next month our talk is ‘Something Special (Cheese)’ by Peter Ashton. So we are all hoping that samples will be provided and we will fetch some cheese biscuits for all to enjoy with our tea. Christine Callaghan
PORTHCAWL WI Our February and March meetings were opened with our normal WI business and it is good to see we are increasing our friendly group. In February we enjoyed an interesting and enlightened talk on the work of the Bridgend Foodbank. Our speaker was one of the Trustees, Mr Jonathon Davies. In March, we hope to enjoy a Millinery experience! This will include an Easter Bonnet competition. In April we will welcome a lady who demonstrates Gift Wrapping and there will also be a floral competition. Our monthly reading group is going well and is now held in the Coast Café. We meet at All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm and new members can expect a warm welcome. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on 713124.

COYCHURCH WI MEETING The president Sandra Davidson welcomed everyone to the St. David’s Day meeting and conducted the business of the meeting. A coffee morning is planned for Thursday 5th May to be held in the Williams Memorial Hall with cream scones and jam, tea, coffee and various stalls including ‘Fashions from Sian’. Tickets now available £3.50. Everyone welcome. The Monthly Newsletter was perused and then members enjoyed a variety of Welsh Cakes with their tea/coffee. Arrangements were made for a fabulous day out at Chepstow Race Day on 14th July. The knitting for charity group date and time to be finalised. Then our Kurling referee Val Moore organised eight teams each with four players for a fun knockout competition, not taken too seriously by the participants! There was a great atmosphere with Seaside News | 38
much laughter and shouts of encouragement to the players. The winning team members were Delma Coombes, Sandra Davidson, Jean Jakeaway and Sandra Lazarus. SKER WI – COLOURFUL MEMORIES IN BLACK & WHITE On 10th March 2016, President Nora Williams welcomed 53 members and two visitors to the meeting. This month’s speaker was Mr Dean Powell. His topic was the life and times of the actor Glyn Houston. Mr Powell had started his own career as a staff reporter with the Western Mail some 20 years ago. He worked with Rhondda-born Glyn to write his autobiography ‘Glyn Houston – A Black & White Actor’, published in 2009. Members enjoyed an absolutely enthralling presentation looking at Glyn’s life from losing his mother as a child, to running his grandmother’s milk round in Tonypandy, culminating in him becoming one of Britain’s most distinguished actors, who appeared in more than 100 films and countless theatre productions. Kate Owen gave the vote of thanks, and echoed the thoughts of the meeting when she thanked him for an utterly absorbing and entertaining presentation. Sker WI meets at 7pm on the 2nd Thursday of the month at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage Village. Visitors are always welcome, so why don’t you call in and say hello and see what we get up to! Christine Beynon SKER WI Correspondent
LALESTON WI Our meeting, on the 3rd March, was taken by Vice President Barbara Rees, who welcomed everyone on a wet and windy evening. The minutes of our previous meeting were read and agreed. Barbara delighted everyone with news that our President Margaret Aylen continues to make excellent progress with her recuperation. Further details were announced for our trips to Llanelli House on the 4th May and Tyntesfield on 17th August. Future excursions to the WI Council meeting, Link meeting, Chepstow Races and Midsummer Dinner at Margam Park were all discussed. Barbara introduced our speaker Tom Phelps, who was extremely entertaining reading his wonderful poems on Valley Life. A vote of thanks was given by Joan Rule. The raffle was won by Pat Williamson and competition won by Marian Reed. Our annual lunch was held at Blanco’s, Port Talbot and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The monthly book club was held at Bridgend Library. The next meeting will be held on 7th April at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). Our guest speaker will be Andrew Evans on ‘S.O.S. Mountain Rescue’. Our competition theme will be a ‘Nature Item’. New members always welcome. For further information call Diane on 01656 656600 Dawn Storie

You may require help in the future from someone to make decisions about your health, finances or property, at a time when you are unable to do so. If you want someone to be able to look after your affairs if you become incapable then you will need to appoint an attorney. A power of attorney (LPA) gives someone (your ‘attorney’) the power to make decisions on your behalf. You can prepare an LPA whenever you like, provided you have the mental capacity to understand what you are doing. However, the LPA does not take effect until it has been registered at the Court of Protection. There are two separate types of LPA: 1. Property and Financial Affairs. 2. Health and Welfare. The Property and Financial Affairs power of attorney, appoints an attorney to deal with your bank accounts, handling dayto-day finances, dealing with taxes and making gifts that you used to make (eg birthday presents to relatives) on your behalf. The Health and Welfare power of attorney, appoints an attorney to make decisions such as giving or refusing consent to particular medical treatments, being able to take decisions about ‘life-sustaining’ treatment, deciding whether you should continue living at home or move into a residential care home. Almost anyone over the age of 18, including your spouse, can be appointed as an attorney (though someone who is bankrupt cannot act as an attorney under a property and financial affairs LPA). An LPA can also appoint more than one attorney. If you choose to have an LPA with a single attorney, or attorneys who must act together, the LPA could cease to be effective if one attorney can no longer act (eg: if an attorney dies). You need to decide who you would like to act as your attorney, and check that they are willing to be appointed. We can prepare the LPA forms on your behalf to ensure you do not overlook any important issues and to ensure that it has the desired effect. The forms are then signed by you as the donor, the attorneys and certificate providers (who sign to confirm you have understood the implications of this). Natalie Thomas Associate

Finance HOW GIO MEERKAT CAN SPOIL YOUR CREDIT RATING Computers make many things so much easier these days, from obtaining information to shopping online. This includes obtaining quotes for all kinds of insurance, from travel insurance to pet insurance and from household to car insurance, to name a few. However, what you don’t see behind the scenes, are all the credit searches on yourself that take place, requested from the credit reference agencies, by the providers you are considering doing business with. Now we all know just how important data is, from both preserving your privacy as well as checking your creditworthiness. Where searching online comes into the matter, is where you are looking to pay monthly, as many of us do these days, since that would constitute a credit agreement being put in place – and we all know how a credit agreement works. We also all know that leaving a trail of several credit searches against your name can also cause you credit issues, even if you have never had credit problems. How many of you have tried to get, for example, (interest-free) credit on a new fridge or sofa, only to be turned down for no apparent reason? That’s where all those searches can trip you up. Well, regarding house and property insurance, we now work in tandem with a Welsh brokerage firm that researches the market for you WITHOUT leaving a trail of credit searches in your name. Call us for assistance in having that firm find you a suitable quote and policy. On a different subject, many people STILL struggle to raise finance for all kinds of reasons BUT fail to do so because they have a poor credit rating or have a history of using payday loans; perhaps it’s due to being turned down for further borrowing, even for house improvements or because of the building type of house you live in. Well, help is now at hand through a new working relationship we have, where ANY kind of scenario can be considered. Just call us today on 01656 782545 and we may be able to help.
IN SPECIE PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS Transferring an asset ‘in specie’ means to transfer the ownership of that asset from one person, or company to another person in its current form, i.e. without the need to convert the asset to cash. This could for example be a building or shares. Advantages: – you obtain tax relief for the pension contribution thus reducing your tax bill on the in-specie contribution; – avoid the need for the asset to be sold in order to transfer into the pension and re-buy with associated costs; – all future growth of the asset within the pension scheme will be free from CGT For example Mr ‘A’ owns a share portfolio valued at £40,000 and has unused pension relief from previous years and has annual earnings of £95,000. The shares can be set up as an in specie contribution with the pension fund recovering £10,000 of basic rate tax to make the gross £50,000 contribution with Mr ‘A’ recovering a further £10,000 of income tax from HM Revenue and Customs. Pension fund value is improved by an additional £10,000 and the shares now grow within a tax free environment. Mr ‘A’ has reduced his personal tax bill by £10,000. BIRD WATCH: COLLARED DOVE
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. The Collared Dove is a sleek buff-grey coloured bird, although males may show a soft pink flush to their plumage. It is easily identifiable by a black and white collar on the nape of its neck and a white ring around the eye. Its call has been likened to the football chant ‘Un-i-ted’ (or ‘ku-koo-ku’). When drinking the Collared Dove keeps it head down and sucks up the water, unlike most other birds, that sip and lift their head to swallow. They were first reported breeding in Britain during the 1950s, having dispersed from their native Turkey and the Balkans, and are now one of our most familiar garden birds. BTO Garden BirdWatch data show there has been a slight decrease in recent years, the reasons behind which are unknown. If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. April showers – lovely! At least it’s getting warmer - warm and rainy ideal for slugs (yuk). Make use of the longer days to get your garden ready to be stunning this summer. It is a good idea to stake tall plants letting them grow into their support, staking later on is a rotten job, the plants always look bundled up and not looking as pretty as they should! By now the ground should have reached the required 6C so time to sow salad stuff, beetroot and herbs such as dill and rocket. Give your greenhouse a good scrub (if you haven’t already) to get rid of pests and diseases and to let more light in ready for your seedlings. Feed roses to ward off blackspot and mildew, after last year’s wet summer they’ll be waiting to pounce! Blood, fish and bone will do them a treat. Did you know – the average person eats 65 apples a year, with 75,000 different species grown round the world it would take you over 20 years to try them all in one a day! We have a quiz in the Green Hall 26th April 7.30pm – come pit your wits against the eggheads of Cefn! Chris Early

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS The weather can be a bit unpredictable in April, but by now we are well used to that. The lovely show of Daffodils, Hyacinths, and winter flowering Pansies in our garden helps me to believe spring is here, and the welcome sunshine reinforces my optimism. April is perennial planting time, border perennials which are inclined to be a bit tender are best left until now to be cut back. April is by tradition the time of year when Asters, Michaelmas daisies, are divided. Watch out for slugs, cutworms and aphids and other common pests. You will soon see your first spittlebugs of the year if you grow Rosemary, not to worry they are mostly harmless. Root crops can be planted now (onions and potatoes) Brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower etc.) can be started and grown outdoors in April, along with lettuce and spinach. Plans and preparations are being made for our annual Plant Sale to be held on Saturday 7th May. There will be a huge variety of plants for sale. The next lecture on 11th April is a practical demonstration on Hanging Baskets with Kevin Thomas. Enjoy a happy and blessed Easter holidays. Gwen Bradford

A GOOD DAILY ROUTINE? How about a quick and simple glass of warm lemon water with Himalayan salt? This simple drink can boost your morning health and wellness regimen — and it’s so easy to make. There are a number of professional athletes and Olympians who start their morning with lemon and salt water, which may say something about its effectiveness. It can increase your immune function, decrease uric acid to fight inflammation, improve digestion, and balance your body. These benefits can be attributed to the vitamin C content of the lemon juice as well as the essential minerals contained in Himalayan salt. This simple morning drink promotes vitality, health, and overall wellness, and may even improve your sex drive! Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke Read more at: www.thealternativedaily.com
Screening saves lives because cancers are diagnosed and treated earlier than they would have been without screening. Breast cancer screening uses a specialist x-ray test called a mammogram to check the breast for signs of cancer. This service is now available privately twice a week at Nuffield Health Cardiff Bay Hospital. Patients can be seen for a specialist consultation, which includes a mammogram and an ultrasound. The results of the imaging and consultation are all explained at one visit. With the introduction of the latest Full Field Digital Mammography unit, Nuffield Health Cardiff Bay Hospital offers the One Stop Breast Clinic twice a week with Mr Sumit Goyal, Consultant Oncoplastic Surgeon and Dr Philippa Young, Consultant Radiologist. Senior Radiographer Mammographer, Julie Pemberton, explains, “If you have any changes to your breasts, you should make an appointment to see your GP straight away. The results of the imaging and consultation are available immediately, but if biopsy tests are done, the results take a few days. The total price of the consultation and imaging tests is £400 and it is all carried out on the same day.” For more information or to make an appointment with the One Stop Breast Clinic direct, please ring: 02920 836714. GETTING USED TO NEW DENTURES Here at Denture Design Centre we understand that new dentures are not always easy to use at first. Here are several tips you can use to make living with new dentures as comfortable and natural as possible. – Take it slow when first using new dentures, as many tasks may present some difficulties. – Learning to chew in a straight up and down stroke will help in keeping your dentures aligned as you eat. – Clenching of your teeth can also cause problems like soreness and bone loss over time you should try your best not to clench your mouth if you can. If you are clenching your dentures because they are loose and you are trying to keep them in place, visit a clinical dental technician or a dentist so they can try and solve this. – If you encounter any sore areas after having new dentures contact the clinical dental technician or the dentist that provided the dentures, this will need to be seen to and is quite common. – Most speech problems will resolve in a few weeks if not contact the clinical dental technician or the dentist that provided the dentures. – You should not feel discouraged if you experience a few mistakes at first. In time you will be enjoying life with your new dentures as you speak, eat, laugh and smile. For more information visit www.denturedesigncentre.co.uk or call us on 01656 767806
KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE The Rotary Club of Porthcawl are once again offering free blood pressure checks on Saturday 30th April, from 10am to 4pm at Trinity Church, Porthcawl. High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the most preventable causes of illness and premature death in Wales. It’s a major risk factor for stroke, heart attack and cognitive decline as well as cardiovascular disease. Luckily, simple lifestyle changes, such as exercise, a balanced diet low in salt, maintaining a healthy weight, and in more serious cases, medication, can lower your risk. Tests administered by health professionals who are trained to identify potential problems and advise on appropriate action. So call in, take the test and… KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE! Rtn. Arts COR MEIBION PORTHCAWL CELEBRATION CONCERT
Featuring Cor Meibion Porthcawl and the Marazion Apollo Male Voice Choir from Cornwall. This promised to be a wonderful musical evening and so it turned out to be - with both choirs at their very best performing to a full church. The programme, presented by both choirs, was varied but different. Marazion opened proceedings with ‘Hymn To Apollo’, which has become very much their signature tune. This was followed by an Italian piece, a Latin hymn and finished with the popular song anthem from the musical Chess. Cor Meibion Porthcawl began their programme with the rousing Welsh hymn ‘Bryn Myrddin’. This was followed by ‘What A Wonderful World’ - a quieter piece. Other songs from Porthcawl were the popular ‘O Gymru, Old Man River’ featuring a solo spot from Phil Davies. Both the end of the first half and second half of the concert featured both choirs in unison singing in Welsh and English simultaneously ‘Rachie’ and ‘Gwahoddiad’. The audience responded with rapturous applause. A truly memorable evening was had by everyone who attended and participated. Everyone is now looking forward to the annual concert on Saturday 3rd September when the guest artist is none other than Wyn Evans of Go Compare fame. Mal Evans

ST. JOHN’S TRUST FUND RAISING St. John’s Trust arranged a wonderful Concert at St Mary’s Catholic Church. Hosted by BMC, it featured ladies choir Vocelle and Oldcastle Primary School Choir. The male choir sang items associated with Six Nations Rugby starting with ‘Men of Harlech’ & ‘Rachie’ - favourites on match days. MD, Rhiannon WilliamsHale’s arrangement of ‘National Glory’ - a medley of 6 Nation’s songs, was particularly well received. Rhiannon was ably supported by Stephanie Bailey. Meryn Williams, MD of the ladies, opened with the lively ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ ending with John Rutter’s ‘Gaelic Blessing’. The harmonies of the ladies was evident with the rapturous applause. In between the senior choirs were the schoolchildren. Their programme included ‘Dewi Sant’ and the traditional ‘Migildi Magildi’. The highlight however was the singing of ‘Naughty’ from Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’. The children then joined the men to sing ‘Sospan Fach’. The Welsh influence continued with ‘Calon Lan’, ‘Yma O Hyd’ and James Hearn’s ‘Rhys’. The ladies return included Kirby Shaw’s ‘Let the River Run’, with energy & harmony. The ladies’ whole performance excelled. BMC ended the programme with items from its new CD, before the traditional Anthem and combined ‘Tydi a Roddaist’, earning a standing ovation. David T Burt
STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK The local music scene has been quiet lately, but with Easter upon us, and nice weather coming, things should improve. I had a beer with my ex-manager and top promoter Myke Stevens, and he’s putting his ‘Acoustic Festival of Great Britain’ on at Uttoxeter Race Course on 3rd to 5th June, so check the website, it’s a great fest! My spies told me that top local band Blister are reforming! I’ll keep you posted on that. Highly talented singer-songwriter Rebecca Hurn is hosting an open mic night every Sunday at 6.00pm at The Seagull, Rest Bay, so why not bring a guitar and give a song, you can even have a selfie with yours truly. There’s also a good jam night up at The Royal Oak, Kenfig Hill every Thursday, which I will attend. Belated birthday wishes to Paul FM, and singer Laurence (more caps ‘n gowns than Batman) Parry. Dates for your music diaries: Bridgend’s Funeral for a Friend at Cardiff Y Plas on 5th and 6th April, and the Manic Street Preachers play Swansea Liberty Stadium on 28th May. Keep the calls coming on your music news, gigs, demos, etc. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Nicky Wire, Manic Street Preacher

Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Through last year I kept readers informed of a new film I was shooting, called ‘The Garden by the Sea – A Story of Penarth’, and, after a long sound edit, it was released on 5th March 2016 with a screening at the AGM of the Friends of St Peter’s, the church in Old Cogan, where I am pleased to report that it had an enthusiastic reception. DVD copies are available from Downwood Film Productions at £9.95 each. In the last week of February I spent a week on board THV Galatea, the Trinity House work vessel that maintains buoys around the coast of England and Wales. I was filming rough seas for Carl Richards’s production ‘The Last Lights of Rhiannon’. We sailed from Swansea dock and headed across the Bristol Channel and, on our second day at sea, we were off the coast of Cornwall, heading for the Isles of Scilly, where conditions were extremely rough! Despite feeling decidedly seasick, we managed to set up the camera and tripod on the lowest deck, and I filmed what appeared to be mountainous waves going past – through the viewfinder they certainly seemed to be a lot higher than we were! PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We had some great presentations from Brian Haggerty and Graham Harries this month. We also held our inaugural Malcolm Nugent Portfolio Competition. Each member could enter four prints or four digital images into the competition - one from each of the following genres: Abstract, Landscape, Nature and People. Nigel Nicholas skillfully judged the competition, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each of the 68 images. Two people (Richard Craze and Glyn Edmunds) achieved an amazing 79 points out of 80 for first place, so Nigel had to choose the winning set of images. After much deliberation, the eventual winner was Glyn Edmunds with his images ‘Out of Use’, ‘Fire in the Sky (Sunrise over Mount Kenya)’, ‘Time for a Drink’ and ‘Preparing the Hooks’. Second place therefore went to Richard Craze with his excellent prints ‘Hay Bales’, ‘Morning Mist’, ‘Dandelion Head’ and ‘Union Soldier’. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Glyn Edmunds Chairman

Spring is good news for sellers, says Peter Alan If you’re serious about selling now is a great time to get your property on the market, says local estate agency Peter Alan in Porthcawl. According to the branch, the spring period is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year for searching for property. As people shake off the cobwebs of winter and the weather gets warmer, potential buyers will hopefully be out in force looking for a new home. “Spring is a great time to sell,” says Sonia Waterman, Branch Valuer at Peter Alan Porthcawl. “Not only are properties a lot more aesthetically pleasing in brighter weather, but increased appetite to move during the spring period means sellers will have more prospective buyers competing to buy their home making it more likely you will achieve the best price.”
“We almost always see a rush of buyers entering the market in springtime,” adds Sonia “It seems that many feel inspired by the milder weather and longer days to start making plans for the future, including looking for a new home. We’re advising home owners to get their property on the market early to be ready for the flurry of market activity that spring is sure to bring.” “With 95% of buyers now starting their search online it’s vital that your property stands out from the crowd at this busy time of year. We offer professional photos, a property audio tour, premium website listings, and a Property Passport of local information all helping to create a great first impression of your home.”
To find out more about selling your property or to arrange a free market appraisal, contact your local Peter Alan branch on 01656 771600 or email porthcawl@peteralan.co.uk. www.seasidenews.co.uk

POEMS WHEN THE LIGHTS OF YOUR SOUL EXTINGUISHES
When the lights of your soul extinguishes, And your body draws its last breath, Your life is coming to an end, At the time humans call death. Your body will feel much lighter, With the removal of all life’s burdens, And your guardian angels will stand forward, To help you greet your loved ones past again. Your body is but a shell, In a matter of a moment, With battle scars and illnesses, From your time on earth you’ve spent. Your body was just a vessel, To take your soul about within, From the moment you were conceived, And you growth started to begin. Always be safe when climbing, Try not to be by yourself, Map out your route and return times, In case you suffer with your health. David Boyce, Brackla, Bridgend
A MOTHER’S PRAYER
God of compassion, weep awhile with me As now I mourn this child, my firstborn son, You shared my joy, when first I brought him forth For You too had a dearly loved One You shared your joy with us who are but flesh When Mary brought forth Christ, Your Holy Son, And shepherds bowed the knee and angels sang Yet knowing He must die for everyone. And so you shared my joy to see mine grow As now he led his siblings into life And as a man he graced this world below ‘til overcome as now in this last strife Be with me, Lord, to share with me my loss You will not sternly bid me dry my tears The Man of Sorrows, your beloved Son You watched, as done to death by evil men That through his death He Death might overcome Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl Seaside News | 58
HANNAH
THE DREAM
Has anyone else got a Dizzy daughter like me? She’s just so forgetful you see Can’t find this and can’t find that At the moment up to date Lost Credit Cards; issue number 28! Handbags and purses I’ve lost count Not to mention keys, clothes And dozens of mobile phones! I get phone calls at all hours! Have you seen my make up bag or lunch Or something else anywhere? Mum where did I leave my car? Now that’s taking it a bit too far! On buses, taxis, trains and planes Everything gets left behind! Most of these things, She never does find At least she hasn’t Lost the children yet Having said that I wouldn’t like to put a bet! She doesn’t even care! Deary me! Who does she get it from, me? I hope it’s not me! Now, where did I put my glasses?! Sue Waters, Porthcawl
ANGLERS JOY
It’s March again it’s fishing time I follow my hobby with rod reel and line, I walk through the grass heavy laden with frost The river has had a new fish stock, The river looks good with a mist arising A splash of the water where a fish is rising, I place on the hook a red worm for bait I cast my line and wait and wait, A take on the line as the fish speeds away A flash of my rod as I strike my prey, The reel is screaming as the fish takes the line I play him gentle this fish must be mine, The fish is strong as it leaps in the air The excitement I have is mine not to share, The bend in my rod as I keep the line tight At last the fish tires and gives up the fight, The landing net is in my hand as I bring him gently to the bank It’s in the net this fish is mine This fish was strong I took my time, A fresh run Sewin, not bad to begin This fishing season I start with a grin Basil Walters, Cefn Glas, Bridgend
Whenever I dream of my little girl she runs and shouts and plays Like all the other children in all their boisterous ways I see her skip, I see her trip; I hear her laugh and cry Then when she’s had her fun, home she’ll run and into my arms she’ll fly With a great big hug and a teasing tug, she’ll cuddle me close and say ‘Daddy I love you heaps and heaps’ in her cheeky little way. Whenever I dream of my little girl, she’s healthy, fit and well With eyes alight and a smile so bright, it’s really hard to tell That my dream is a wish and a longing, a hope for something new For her life to be one that is normal and able-bodied too. But then I awake and I have to forsake my dream for what is true That she cannot walk and she cannot talk like the other children do That she cannot shout and skip about and cuddle me close and say The things she desperately wants to, yet in her own special way… Instead she talks to me with her eyes and reassures me with her smile That all is well and I can tell that she’s happy all the while Knowing that one day in some magical way, we’ll play together and scheme And sing and shout and skip about…in an Everlasting Dream. John Weaver, Brackla, Bridgend
EASTER TIME
Easter Time is coming near All the children shout and cheer, The eggs line up that Easter Bunny brings The Easter chicks are spreading their wings, Our saviour rose from the dead He forgave our sins, the tears we’ve shed, Our tummies fill up as we stuff our faces With Easter eggs from different places, Easter Time is coming near All the children shout and cheer. Anna Muckell (aged 10), Bridgend

POEMS RETAIL ROMANCE
I went to Tesco yesterday, to put them to the test, To look for romance in the aisles, that was my only quest. In mini skirt and high-heeled shoes, some lippy and war paint, So no hunk could mistake me for some kind of saint. I lingered by asparagus and by the oysters too, Hoping aphrodisiacs might lure a man or two. I looked for men with meals for one and checked their wedding finger, If they looked the married kind I didn’t care to linger. I fluttered lashes, asked for help, to reach things from the topmost shelf, Trying to draw attention from their shopping to myself. Saying ‘Please excuse me’, while giving them the eye, Filling up my trolley with things I never buy. At last I reach the liquor aisle, ‘Eureka!’ men galore,
All stocking up with beer and wine, then heading for the door. Trolleys loaded up with goods much loved by male adults, Sadly, bloated bellies clearly showing the results. So am I disappointed by what they had to proffer? Not me, I’m off to Asda, they’ve two for one on offer! Judy Dee, Porthcawl

I met a fox in Merthyr Mawr who sat with me a while and Said to me, ”It’s ironic that we foxes who forage in bins get bad Press. Yet you humans drop rubbish with no guilty conscience And make more of a mess”. A magpie on flight overheard this litter debate and chirped in With, “It’s ironic that we magpies collect what you drop and you Call it stealing so tomorrow I’ll send your Council the bill for rubbish collection and

Sport TAP IT OUT CC Club rides have been well attended throughout February with new members joining on a weekly basis. The shift workers day ride has been a great success and the winter hibernation for some riders seems to be over. Three of our riders took on the Evans Bristol Sportive. Scott Sidoli-Kenny, Laurence Hunt and Nicky Morgan all finished in the top 20. All riding very well in appalling conditions. New for the club this year will be the introduction of a ladies group – with Sharon Jones leading the rides. The group rides will be a more sociable event with coffee stops and the occasional glass of prosecco. So for those ladies wishing to get into the sport, please contact the club for information. Club rides are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and also a shift workers ride posted most days on Facebook. All new members welcome so any questions please contact me on nickemorgan@ hotmail.co.uk. Stay safe and KEEP ON TAPPING. Nicky Morgan

REST BAY NIPPERS A quiet month for the Rest Bay nippers. We have welcomed some new members, who have settled in great and are having lots of fun at our pool training sessions. By the time this is published we would have taken a team of nippers to Millfield to compete in the GB Nipper Stillwater Championships. Our nippers are now eagerly waiting the summer months for us to get down to the beach for training. If you have a child between the age of 7-12 that would like to join Rest Bay nippers or any queries please contact: Chris Howells, chris.howells5@btinternet.com
SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE SURF REPORT It hasn’t been a very consistent winter for surf more in the way of consistent rain. This heavy rain has washed away shingle banks that built up last summer, which had created a new left-hander. It’s gone now, washed away. The stream at Southerndown has also washed away so much sand off the beach that there is more bedrock showing than ever, yet again. There are now two big bare patches in Southerndown’s protective pebble bank. Last month we had a day of overhead swell with an offshore breeze making for perfect waves. All surf spots were firing to the max all along our coastline. We have had a few small days since then with varying winds. At this time of writing in mid March, the RM saw 3ft glassy surf with 40 surfers in the water before 8am. David Batten
