Welcome back to Porthcawl

Dear Editor, As many readers of the good Seaside News will notice I have been absent from duty of late. My apologies for this but I have been on extended safari in the Amazon Basin looking for lions, tigers and bears. However, I noticed upon my return to Porthcawl that the railway station has been

dismantled. Who is responsible for this? I also notice that there still isn't a swimming pool. On a lighter note, it's good to see the youngsters enjoying themselves down near the fairground, smoking heavily and drinking cans of Strongbow. I love this town and would like to see more of this sort of thing, maybe gangs on street corners, bonfires on the tarmac beach, that sort of thing. It all goes to make for a thriving feel to the town. I also notice that the sea has turned grey and cold. What happened to the blue sea and sunny skies I remember? Can any readers help? Dear Editor, At present, great controversy has been created by BCBC's suggestion to introduce car parking charges on the sea front. It seems that public opinion is divided on this. Some think it is a good idea whilst others, when they have considered the hard facts, are completely against it on the grounds that local motorists who wish to visit the seafront would be penalised, especially as they feel they are already paying very high council tax for the privilege of living in a town with a seafront. Motorists would be forced to park in the congested side streets. In addition, it would have an adverse effect on the seafront businesses and town generally. One can imagine the ghastly

sight of a line of parking meters from Coney Beach to Ocean View flats accompanied by the unwelcome sight of an army of traffic wardens marching up and down the prom. The most vital question involved is that it will be of no financial benefit to Porthcawl as all the money collected from the parking meters will end up in BCBC's coffers and, as is their custom, this money will not be spent on Porthcawl. It is definitely a backward step for the tourist industry. On a completely different subject, according to press reports, the good news is that Morrisons supermarket is coming to Porthcawl. We look forward to future development. JOHN JENKINS Porthcawl

Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! Between the 3rd and 5th of July, many went to see ‘The Wizard of Oz’, performed by Bryntirion Comprehensive School. The cast consisted of pupils from Year 7 to Year 10, and since the Easter holidays, the performers have spent their time in rehearsals, and it definitely paid off! Year 10 pupil Jade Bird gave an outstanding performance as Dorothy, alongside the most adorable star of the stage, Mac Bartlett: Bryntirion’s very own Toto. However, there’s no ‘Wizard of Oz’ without the infamous trio: the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion,

Newton Primary Here we are anticipating the summer holidays, and what an exciting time we have had! HRH The Duchess of Cornwall visited the Emmaus charity shop, New Road recently. Over 100 of our children and staff were there to welcome her. They were delighted when the royal car pulled up right alongside them and shook hands and spoke to many of our children and staff! acted out by Lauren Coates, Matthew Daly and Harry Grabham. But what good is a show without a decent villain? The Wicked Witch of the West was performed by Phoebe SpenceEvans, whose purely evil cackle brought the role to life. The choral group acting as the Munchkins are also worthy of standing ovation, because of their ability to learn multiple songs and flawless dance routines. Bryntirion created one of the most enjoyable and memorable school productions to date, and we tap our heels and hope the school can once again perform another outstanding production.

pirates on 10th July when we held a sponsored pirate event? We ransomed off children to their parents. It was great and we raised lots of money which will be donated to our local Lifeboat Station for their tireless efforts in keeping our shoreline safe. Our brilliant summer fete took place on Friday 5th July. As well as donkey rides, a karate display, stalls and games, we had a fantastic band called ‘The Smithereens’, who played to the crowd in the summer sun. Thank you to Team Newton for organising this and raising over £2,000! Have a good summer from Newton Primary. ANDREW THORNE newtonprimary.bridgend.gov.uk

The term finished with a number of celebrations of achievements of the year. After GCSE and school examinations were completed two very successful sports days were held in which all pupils of the school participated. There was friendly but competitive spirit between the two school houses of Saxons and Britons. Year 11 GCSE Art and Design students created an inspiring exhibition of their work and this was followed later by an Eco Fashion Show in which pupils of many ages displayed items they had created through

ing during September for the autumn 2013 term. Our newest venue, BCLC, has proved very popular and there will be extra classes at this venue for September. We also offer a Ding-Dong class for 3 and 4 year olds at 12.30pm, Friday in Porthcawl and 4pm Monday in Bridgend so those attending school can still join in the Monkey fun. We also offer holiday workshops, parties and nurseries. Please contact us for more information and to check availability. We look forward to seeing you back in the autumn 2013 term. Monkey Music offers classes according to age form 3 months to 4 years at venues throughout the area. Over 30 classes running. The last day of term saw Rhys Webb, Wales and Ospreys rugby player, and David Mahoney of Only Men Aloud, presenting the awards at our annual prize giving ceremony. All departments enjoyed trips out to places such as Cardiff Bay, Battlefield Live in Cimla and Bristol Zoo and a group of Year 10s successfully completed the expedition part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. The Friends of St John's organised a great barbecue and fete with many fun activities as well as delicious food. Although school is now shut for the summer break we have our holiday club and activity weeks running. We are also looking to the new term and to welcoming many new pupils. The office is manned during the holiday if you would like to visit or find out more about the school. MRS C A CLINT

We have been making the most of the summer weather over the past few weeks. On Friday 5th July we were treated to a Fun Day to celebrate the school’s 30th birthday. The PTA organised an all-day party with a disco, bouncy castle, craft activities and party bags. We were very proud to welcome our First Minister, Carwyn Jones to officially open the day and the Publicity Council prepared a buffet lunch to welcome him. We also had the company of

Cynffig news As ever at Cynffig, life has been moving at a tremendous pace, with events, visits and celebrations seemingly every day. On 2nd July, we were delighted to welcome pupils who will make up our new Year 7 for September. It was a lovely day, with our partners at Corneli, Afon-y-Felin, Pyle, Mynydd Cynffig and Cefn Cribwr schools joining us for a Technology Challenge, some great sporting activities, and a Murder Mystery which certainly convinced them that English at Cynffig would never be dull! West Park Primary July is a month of mixed emotions in school. We wave a fond farewell to our Year 6 pupils as they advance to the next phase of their education whilst we welcome our new Nursery pupils, just beginning their primary school journey! To celebrate the end of a successful primary school career, our Year 6 pupils travelled to Atlantic College where they demonstrated exemplary behaviour and team spirit. The experience has provided them with some magical memories to treasure. From canoeing and climbing to archery and assault courses, the children threw themselves into the activities with enthusiasm and eagerness. We wish them every suc-

Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School It is nearly the end of the summer term and what a busy one it has been! We have held transition days for the Year 6 pupils, including a special day out at St Fagans, with over 18 different primary schools in attendance. We look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 pupils and their parents/ carers in September. Afon y Felin News The whole school enjoyed outings recently. The nursery went to Wiggleys Fun Farm for the day. The weather was sunny and the children loved seeing the animals, their picnic and the play area. The older pupils visited Dan yr Ogof Caves. They explored the caves and learnt all about stalagmites and stalactites. Then it was into the dinosaur park to see the models, and not forgetting that most popular attraction – the gift shop! Finally, this year we say goodbye and best wishes to Head of Technology, Mr Morrissey, and Assistant Headteacher, Miss Case, who are off to pastures new, and to the following staff who are retiring: Mr Shurey, Mrs Davies and Mrs Ashton. We wish them a long and very happy retirement. Have a good holiday everyone! REV DR MANGHAN Pennaeth was there to cheer him with the flags they were given. They all stayed for lunch and had a wonderful day. Some junior pupils went on the annual trip to Llangrannog. On Sunday 14th, the school choir sing at Mawdlam Church, for the Community Council Chair Civic Service. The highlight though for the choir and some supporters was seeing HRH Prince Charles when he visited Kenfig. While waiting to sing for him the children enjoyed burgers and were thrilled when, before flying off in his helicopter, he came along speaking and shaking many hands. Truly a day to remember! Children & young people column

It’s been a fantastic summer for British sport so far, with Andy Murray becoming the first British men’s Wimbledon champion since 1936 and Welsh hero Leigh Halfpenny leading the British and Irish Lions to a roaring victory in Australia. It’s always great when men and women from British sports excel because it inspires children and young people to try new sports and attempt to emulate their successes. With a new school year just a few weeks away, it’s a great time to discover the different sporting opportunities on

offer. Trying new activities can also be a great way of making new friends. Considering this, I’d like to challenge the county borough’s children and young people to try something new when they return to school. Not everyone is sporty or enjoys being competitive with others, but even walking to school just one day a week can be a simple way of starting to adopt a healthier, more active lifestyle. If you can’t wait until September to get into a new activity, why not pick up a racquet or put on your dancing shoes at councilrun schemes taking place in your community? Saving charity shops

A few weeks ago I visited one of the British Heart Foundation Cymru's Furniture and Electrical store to learn more about how proposed changes to business rates will lead to a loss of income for the charity and more empty shops on high streets across Wales. A recent report commissioned by the Welsh Government Business and Enterprise Minister calls for cuts to the rate relief given to charity shops in Wales. British Heart Foundation Cymru shop staff and volunteers told me that those changes would mean substantial hikes in business rates and threaten their shop's survival.

The importance of visitors to Porthcawl I recently met Porthcawl Mayor Mike Clarke who is one of those involved with plans for a maritime centre in Porthcawl. And, as Shadow Welsh Tourism Minister, I was delighted that, at last, we have proposals for something that understands the importance of visitors to Porthcawl. The plan would see a multimillion pound centre built on land alongside the new marina. The idea comes from the community itself. It has taken a group of Porthcawl organisations and individuals to come up with proposals which would provide the only additional facilities for this major seaside resort. They have a sensible business plan and seem to have thought through the proposal very thoroughly.

Donated goods such as sofas and fridges to these Furniture and Electrical stores are the lifeblood of the fight against heart disease. Donations to the Swansea shop for example, have recently helped provide three specialist heart nurses, an echocardigraph machine at Morriston Hospital, and 67 lifesaving defibrillator machines to help in the fight against heart disease. My concern is these proposals could have a devastating effect on this work and lead to more empty shop units on our high streets. I understand 130 paid jobs and 1,800 volunteer posts could be lost across Wales. There will also be less money for good causes. PETER BLACK AM Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net

Of course, there is a long way to go with this scheme. Funding has to be secured and planning consent obtained. But I hope that council planners, and indeed the council as a whole, will welcome this attempt to plug the very obvious gaps in the town’s tourism provision. BCBC should not refuse to help this succeed just because it’s “someone else’s” idea. I have frequently expressed my disappointment that BCBC remains fixated on providing a supermarket with their deeply unambitious regeneration proposals which will do nothing to boost tourism. This centre may well address that problem. SUZY DAVIES

The sun is shining and people are turning their thoughts to the summer holidays, but it transpires that an alarming number of us travel overseas without insurance. A recent survey found that almost 1 in 5 people in the Bridgend constituency set off on a foreign holiday without insurance in spite of the fact that the same proportions of people have visited a doctor or hospital whilst away. Younger travellers are more at risk; 48% head off to the sun without insurance. Many people wrongly

Leader’s life

I recently had the honour of being named BCBC’s Armed Forces Champion and was proud to play a role in the recent Armed Forces Day Parade. The next big event to celebrate the important relationship between the borough and local servicemen and women, their families and veterans, will be the signing of our Armed Forces Community Covenant. A Community Covenant is a ‘voluntary statement of mutual support between a civilian community and its local armed forces community’. We’re making really positive progress

Deputy’s days

It was great to see the recent announcement that Morrisons has been identified as the council’s preferred retail partner for Porthcawl. As I write these words, Cabinet is preparing to discuss and formally approve their bid for developing a supermarket as part of our overall regeneration plans for the town. The development of the superstore forms an important part of the plans for the waterfront area, and we want it to benefit the community of Porthcawl as well as the regeneration. With the council undertaking highways and infrastructure work, the superstore develop-

We invited the Royal British Legion, Army, veterans and local organisations and charities to discuss issues such as improving understanding of the numbers of forces personnel locally, housing issues affecting veterans, and how to signpost servicemen and women and those who have left the forces to better support. I hope to share more on this with you soon and ask you as individuals and businesses to sign up to our covenant. I’m determined that we make a real and meaningful difference to our armed forces community and show our appreciation for them. COUNCILLOR MEL NOTT OBE

ment will provide an important link with Dock Street and the town centre, new car parking facilities for the town and attractive landscaped public spaces. This will now enable the council to focus on other important phases of the regeneration, including land reserved for leisure use in the lower part of Salt Lake and the marketing of the nearby Jennings Building. With work on the new £3.4m Porthcawl Marina entering its latter stages and the council continuing to develop a Townscape Heritage Initiative funding scheme for buildings in the seafront area, I think this ably demonstrates that Bridgend County Borough Council remains firmly committed towards delivering regeneration in Porthcawl. Porthcawl Maritime Centre: ‘Harbourside’ An innovative and exciting community led ‘flagship project’ for the benefit of residents and visitors to Porthcawl. This project is for the community, it will be operated as a social enterprise and ownership will be locked in for community use under the structure of a Community Interest Company. A small group of community minded local business people and organisations have come together to create a concept for a high quality facility. This multi-faceted proposal can play an important part in the regeneration of Porthcawl and is of the size, scale and ambition required to be a catalyst for the future regeneration of Porthcawl and its harbour quarter. ‘Harbourside’ will offer a high quality, all weather, all year round experience for the community and tourists and it recognises the importance to Porthcawl of tourism for jobs and trade. The facilities will be built to the highest environmental standards with an aim to achieve BREEAM Excellence standard or above. Attractions will include a ‘Wave Rider’, 21st century interactive pocket museums, local ecology and sea life attractions to showcase our natural coastal environment, maritime culture and heritage. A range of boating and harbour services to substantially enlarge and enhance the new Porthcawl Marina. The inclusion of affordable high quality

4* bunkhouses for organised groups, individuals and marina visitors. There will be a fully integrated provision for the arts such as working, exhibition and performance space. It is the vision of the lead organisations to create the first true, fully inclusive centre of excellence. In developing these proposals we are grateful for the advice and support generously provided by a range of local and professional individuals and organisations such as Porthcawl Sea Cadets, Porthcawl Civic Trust, Porthcawl Shout, Harbour Boating Club, the WSF, Welsh Coast Surf Club, Porthcawl Chamber of Trade & Commerce, sample local and out-of-town schools, BCBC and Welsh Government. The founding members, Mike Clarke, Stuart Bentley and Barrie Metcalf of the social enterprise said: “We have put in a great deal of time, thought and consideration for the needs of the local community and visitors to Porthcawl and we are continuing to engage and liaise with them, to ensure, as far as is reasonably possible, the creation of a facility that will be truly exciting, innovative, environmentally and financially sustainable and fully inclusive for people of all ages, sex, ability and interest. We have received extremely positive feedback to date from all areas and hope to build on that to become a true ‘flagship’ which will lead the way for the future of Porthcawl”. STUART BENTLEY

Rotarians get a wiggle on!

(L–R) Rotarians Ivor Williams, Jeff Perren and Ken Roberts

Bridgend and Porthcawl Rotarians recently helped to man the feeding stations for the Wiggle Dragon Cycle Race - one of the top events in UK cycling, taking in the classic climbs of the Bwlch, Rhigos and Brecon Beacons. An early Sunday morning start meant that six members of the Rotary Club of Porthcawl followed vans driven by Bridgend Rotarians (who had organised the provisions for each station) to their stations on the Brecon Beacons. There, they erected gazebos,

tables, etc. and spread out hundreds of cereal bars, apple pies, Welsh cakes, thousands of bananas – not to mention the salted potatoes and the two 'bowsers' each holding hundreds of gallons of water. One by one, the ‘elite’ riders arrived, most making a brief stop, taking food and water to consume later. The trickle of riders soon became a deluge and for a manic three hour period, hundreds were arriving at the same time! The demand gradually abated as the slower cyclists arrived to take refreshments. It was early evening before they arrived home. They had started the day with a little trepidation – after all, it was their first experience - but it ended with each one keen to volunteer next year! Have you seen the bible verse on the wall at Porthcawl Harbour? In Welsh and then English it says: "Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord is mighty". A quote from Psalm 93:4. At the bottom of the plaque it also says: "God

The cadets made sure the staff were not left out, and they ended up just as wet. The visit, although enjoyable, and let’s face it who doesn’t want to look around a fire engine, also had a serious side as it forms a part of the cadet’s syllabus covering Health and Safety. is always greater than all of our troubles" followed by the initials 'MB'. Do any of the Seaside News readers know who put it there, when, and why? There must be a story behind it! Of course the image of the safe harbour is a favourite metaphor for believers in Jesus Christ. In the lovely old hymn 'Will Your Anchor Hold?' author Priscilla Owens wrote: "Will your eyes behold through the morning light, the city of gold and the harbour bright? Will you anchor safe by the heavenly shore, when life's storms are past for evermore?" I wonder if such a public demonstration of Christian faith would be allowed in our present day. If the local churches asked permission to put a Bible verse on the new marina would someone complain and the politicians think twice about giving permission? REV. MARTIN GILLARD

Gilgal Baptist Church itself when the tide rolls in and fills when the tide rolls out. The ‘magic’ of the well compelled people to travel from miles around seeking a cure for their aliments or atonement for their sins. Today, we are aware that the ‘magic’ of the well is due to natural elements: the inflow of fresh water from underground springs, subterranean passages connecting the well to the beach and fissures within these passages. However, in the 1870s, R.D. Blackmore, author of The Maid of Sker, wrote: "The children are all a little afraid of it on account of its curious ways and the sand coming out of its ‘nostrils’ when first it begins to flow". Many people want to encourage birds into their garden but are afraid to do so because of cats, whether their own or another’s. There are, however, a number of steps that can be taken to help protect the birds in your garden from cat predation. She seems as delighted as we are that work will soon begin on a Community Home which will provide a home and support for 23 previously homeless people (called Companions). They will come off benefits to work in our Emmaus shops collecting, refurbishing and selling donated furniture, electrical and household items. She was interested to hear that we will be opening a Furniture Superstore in Tremains Road, Bridgend on 31st July, due to generous donations from the people of Porthcawl. when a cat passes in front of it. Position nest boxes out of reach. Cat owners can reduce the risk of predation by keeping their pet indoors at dawn and dusk, whilst bells fitted to collars reduce hunting success (remember to replace bells regularly). An estimated 55 million birds are killed by cats in Britain every year; such predation could contribute to long-term declines of familiar garden birds such as House Sparrows. Some took the Vulcan veto was harder than others…

Pluto moons named The recently discovered fourth and fifth moons of Pluto now have official names, Kerberos and Styx. The International Astronomical Union (IAU), which gives the official designations, stipulates in its rules that names derive from mythology. The names – referring to a threeheaded dog and a river separating the living from the dead, ranked second and third in an international public vote. The winning submission, Vulcan, was vetoed by the IAU on the grounds that it is used elsewhere in astronomy, and not sufficiently associated in mythology with Pluto, the ruler

We have all been aware of the devastation in colonies of honey bees. This has been a phenomenon of global proportions. The part bees play in pollination for all our food security is a high priority for all people. In many African countries there are those whose income comes from bee keeping from sales of honey. Some of these may be natural hives. In Tanzania our charity partners have been involved in beekeeping husbandry, and the Ovada Group in Dodoma has initiated training for a group of young people to earn

of the underworld. The two moons, formerly known simply as P4 and P5, were discovered in July 2011 and July 2012, respectively. Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. It is now regarded not so much as a planet as one of the many objects in the Kuiper Belt, a disc-shaped volume of icy objects beyond Neptune. Although Pluto remains the largest of these, since the year 2000 a number of even more distant objects have been found to have a similar size. These include Eris, Sedna, Haumea and Makemake, some of which have moons of their own. CLIVE DOWN Bridgend Astronomical Society a living by making bee hives which could be sold to aspiring beekeepers. We were asked to prepare one of the requested large beehive making workshop kits. This consisted of 40 separate tools (various saws, chisels, screwdrivers, hammers planes etc, but we also had to enclose “G” clamps and sash clamps). This was just one of four crates we are able to pallet last month. We are always short of breast drills, brace bits, clamps and large steel jack planes, so if you are clearing out your shed and garage during this glorious summer, please bear us in mind. Workshops are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. If you love handling old tools, more volunteers are always welcome. The essence of Liberty Horses “I’ve been really impressed with the difference Liberty Horses have made. Their work has had a huge impact on the group’s self esteem and self confidence.” DANIEL, EOTAS SUPPORT WORKER. Liberty Horses provide an education programme that encourages life skills and core values through a combination of classroom workshops and practical experiences. Keziah explains: “This is not about learning how to physically control the horse, but about developing a deeper understanding about how to form relationships." The strengths and benefits of the programme include: • Promotion of values. • Experience-based learning. • Focuses on non-verbal com-

munication skills. • A non-academic and noncompetitive environment. • Increases learning potential through happiness and motivation. • Provides a supportive environment where obstacles can be overcome. • Develops social skills. “The results have been amazing. Rhian is like a different child. This course has really brought her out of herself and made her smile.” LAURA, EOTAS SUPPORT WORKER. “I think you learn a lot more when you’re outside your comfort zone, I’ve learnt a lot of new skills.” CERI, KS3 PUPIL. Following the announcement that the results of the decision to appoint either the Princess of Wales Bridgend or the Royal Glamorgan Llantrisant as the fifth and final specialist hospital in South Wales, Porthcawl Shout Forum volunteered to hospital clinicians to help raise public awareness in Porthcawl. Shout had posters printed for the June public meeting with the Health Board which Nottage, Newton and town retailers kindly displayed. The result was an excellent attendance at the Pavilion with many probing questions from residents.

Life with the Porthcawl Lions

Carole Roberts and Laurence Pearce at the handover lunch

Last month saw the beginning of a new Lion year. Club members plus partners and friends enjoyed a very nice lunch and relaxing afternoon at the Hi-Tide for the handover lunch at which outgoing President Carole Roberts presented incoming President Laurence Pearce with the chain of office and other assorted regalia (fortunately the chain is the only compulsory regalia worn at meetings and official occasions!) Lion Laurence, presenting Lion Carole with

a token of appreciation from members, thanked her for all her hard work and congratulated her on a successful year. The lunch was also attended by some members of Porthcawl Comprehensive's Leos club and outgoing president, Leo Rebecca, introduced incoming president, Leo Charley. Unfortunately increasing costs means that book sales in the Seabank Hotel are no longer a viable proposition, but the book sales in John Street and the car boot sales at the Rest continue to be a success. Just one date for your diaries this month, especially for the children; weather permitting there will be the annual sandcastle competition on Coney Beach on Friday 9th August starting at around 10.30am. Finally, Porthcawl Lions website porthcawllions.org.uk is well worth a visit. Also if you want to know more about the club telephone Don on 01656 788583.

The Gwyrdd’s twenty eighth village barbecue went ahead in glorious evening sunshine and was much enjoyed by the numerous families who attended. Cefn Junction Signal Box has already seen a great deal of activity this summer, as a venue for an art exhibition and barbecue, and the arrival of huge machines saw the beginning of the construction of a new computer controlled signalling system, tolling the death knell of the majority of working signal boxes! BeautifulWorld. Biz – bringing beautiful gifts from around the world to you! This month, I would like to share with you a few details about one of our very popular and very unique product ranges – our leather animals. Each leather animal is made by a Fairtrade organisation in Bhopal in India and starts as a wire frame, to which is added rice grass to provide the body contours. The leather covering is either sheep’s leather or goat’s leather, a waste product of the food industry, and this is painted and polished to produce a very lifelike appearance. Indeed we have had a number of experienced horse owners remark on the anatomical

accuracy of our range of leather horses which start at just 5 pounds going up to 100 pounds. Other lifelike animals in this range include elephants, giraffes, hippos and tigers all of which can be found at www.BeautifulWorld.Biz If you are an animal lover and are looking to add something a little different to your collection, bring this article with you on your next visit to the food hall at the Bridgend Designer Outlet and make use of our special August offer – buy one, buy a second half price (lower priced item half price) – Tracey and her team look forward to serving you.

The July meeting took place in Pyle Church hall. Marjorie Goode chaired the meeting, minutes were read by Maureen Crew. Marjorie informed members that 'The Picnic' in Margam Park was a great success and was enjoyed by all. Members were reminded of our August trip to Labels, Rosson-Wye and on to Symonds Yat. We are all hoping for good weather. Our calender is filling up with a fashion show in the Norton Hotel Mumbles, which includes a two course meal and, in December, a trip to St David's Hall to see Only Men Aloud! Enid Raymer has got our walking group up and walking so to speak with a walk every month. Marjorie welcomed our guest speakers from the Coting Handbell Ringers, lead by Margaret Gammon. We were entertained with music from all over the world and our members were enthralled. The meeting was wound up with tea and biscuits. Our next meeting is on 10th September after our August break with a guest speaker Marilyn Sydenham on the subject of 'Hearing Dogs' for deaf people. We would love to meet anybody wishing to find out what the WI is all about. Call into any of our meetings and you will be assured of a warm welcome.

The July meeting of Sker WI was held recently at St David's Church hall, Nottage. The president Nora Williams welcomed the members present. The speaker for the evening was Mr Karl-James Langford from Archaeology Cymru who gave a talk on 'last prehistoric landscapes'. He told us how the landscape had changed over the years. Going back 18,000 years the climate was very cold – in the region of -50 to -60°C. The Severn Estuary was non-existent, also there was no human habitation. It was not until 11,000 years ago that there were signs of life in caves and the temperature was warmer. Eventually Britain become an island and people started to build homes near the river Severn and went fishing. When animals were killed every part was used either to eat or use in other ways. In West Wales at low tide old trees can still be seen which are thousands of years old. Members are busy getting ready for the Glamorgan Show. The next meeting will be on 12th September when the speaker will be Captain Jones on 'Experiences of WW2/U Boats'. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome.

Porthcawl Townswomen's Guild On a very warm afternoon members were entertained by Miss Dawn Lennard from the Gower Bird Hospital. She is an enthusiastic volunteer at the hospital and held her audience fascinated by her information and photographs. There were many “oohs” and “aahs” over the baby birds and hedgehogs. At our last Speaker's Report, the PowerPoint picture showed a large stone 'house' built into a low landscape of ancient sand dunes close to the sea. It is remote, tree-less and has rebuffed countless winter storms. No, not the 'Rest' at Rest Bay Porthcawl but the famous Neolithic “village house” of Skara Brae at Bay o’ Skaill on the Isle of Orkney. During a ferocious storm in 1850 the sand and grass covering was blown away revealing eight small pristine stone houses, all connected and built

There is not a meeting in August but a Coffee Morning for the Mayor’s Civic Fund will be held on 14th August at the Atlantic Hotel, everyone welcome. At the September meeting on the 11th at All Saints Church hall, 2pm there will be a Harvest Tea and sparkling entertainment! Do come and join us! DOROTHY THOMAS

4,000 years ago. Orkney starts 10 miles north of Scotland across the fierce Pentland Firth and consist of 70 islands of which only 20 are inhabited. Kirkwall, the capital city has a population half that of Porthcawl and was founded by the Vikings approximately 1,000 years ago. Scrapa Flow was the Royal Navy’s main northern base in both world wars and the sinking of the battleship HMS Royal Oak with the loss of 833 sailors and boys was its greatest tragedy. Porthcawl U3A convener and speaker Elizabeth Bower revealed her great affection for Orkney and its fascinating history, culture and Nordic-Scots origins. Harrison Residential Lettings Inheritance Tax – the implications for you

When you die, inheritance tax could cost your loved ones a large amount of money. Inheritance tax is payable on your estate after your death once your debts have been paid. If your estate is higher than the inheritance tax threshold, your estate will be liable to tax at 40% on the extra amount. This is reduced to 36% if you leave at least 10% of your estate to a charity. The Nil Rate threshold is the amount of money that everyone is allowed to leave without paying inheritance tax. This is set by the Government and at the present time is £325,000.00. So for example, if your estate is worth £500,000.00, you pay no tax on the first £325,000.00 and

either 40% or 36% on the remainder. If you have a spouse or civil partner, any assets you leave to them are exempt from inheritance tax. In addition, your spouse or civil partner’s estate is increased by the amount you didn’t leave to others, meaning that together a couple can leave £650,000.00. If you give away any money less than seven years before you die, this will be treated as part of the estate. Your beneficiaries could get around this by taking out insurance to cover the tax bill. There is an annual exemption of £3,000.00, which means that if you limit cash gifts to this amount, inheritance tax will not be payable. You can carry this exemption forward for one year only. Also, gifts to charity or political parties are tax exempt. Similarly, if you arrange for a proportion of your income to be paid as a gift then your beneficiaries will not pay tax on this either. If you wish to explore other options in order to reduce the tax implications after your death please contact us to discuss. MADELINE RAND

Things you should know! Welcome to our new adviser You may be aware that since the start of 2013 there have been a number of radical changes in the way in which financial advice is provided. Many organisations have found it difficult to adapt, including the banks which are restricting the availability of advice in their branches. One Life Financial Planning Ltd however, has seen a significant increase in enquiries for our services as independent financial advisers. So much so that we are in the process of increasing the number of staff at our Porthcawl office. On 1st July, I was pleased to welcome Mr Delwyn Eatwell as an adviser into the team. Delwyn has held senior positions in finance for over 27 years. His

wealth of experience in providing advice to both business and personal clients will, I believe greatly enhance the service that we provide. We also have plans for further expansion later in the year. POUND COST AVERAGING

Sell in May and go away, come back on St Leger Day is an old City saying which you probably would have been wise to have followed this year, looking at how markets dropped in June. However, research shows that, for every year the saying proves correct, there are just as many it turns out to be wrong. Indeed July has seen (at the time of writing) a significant bounce in the fortunes of the markets. For most private investors, such short-term rises and falls shouldn’t be a worry if you follow the path of pound cost

averaging. In essence, pound cost averaging is the gradual drip-feeding of money into the markets eg. if you had £1,000 to invest, you would spread the investment over say ten equal monthly installments of £100. So if the markets fall during the ten month period, your investment would buy more stock than it would have done had you invested the whole amount in a single transaction. It takes timing out of the whole investment equation. CHRIS ELLIS

We often hear about socalled ‘Rip-Off Britain’ yet, did you know that the UK officially has the most competitive life assurance protection in the world? The competitive market here means that everyone should be able to afford to protect those people closest to them, their income, mortgage, etc. An independent adviser will be able to offer you many of the most competitive rates, whereas buying elsewhere can often be more expensive due to a mark-up in price. our clients enjoy life assurance premiums which are actually cheaper than their car insurance – and whilst you can replace a car, you cannot replace a parent who has died early. Some 24,000 children every year lose a parent – a staggering reality that no-one can ignore and being adequately protected is one of life’s responsibilities that all parents have. Call us on 01656 782545 to see how much you might save on your current premiums – to encourage you to simply find out, all enquiries we receive during August 2013 will go forward to a free draw for tickets for one family of up to five people to one visit to the Odeon cinema at Bridgend Designer Outlet or similar venue of your choice, to a maximum value of £50. Interest-only mortgages: A storm is brewing as certain lenders are writing to borrowers with interest-only mortgages, seeking to have

All the financial advice and support you need in one place When it comes to your financial matters the often complex nature of them as well as continuous changes in legislation can be overwhelming and confusing. Many people still organise their financial affairs independently of expert financial advice as they believe it is a straightforward process then make mistakes which often are irreversible, such as annuities or invest money in the wrong places unbeknown to them. However with increasing changes in legislation whether it is pension and retirement planning, managing your investments, mortgages and protection or estate planning expert advice is recommended as the changes can be even more overwhelming and confusing. At Bartholomew Hawkins

we pride ourselves on having a team of chartered financial planners who are experts in their field as well as customer relationship assistance team members who will help you make sense of your financial matters and put plans in place that suit both your budget and requirements. We also have chartered financial planners who speak Welsh so if you’d prefer your advice provided to you in Welsh just ask. What is clinical reflexology? Children's diets worse today than in wartime Wartime diseases are making a comeback among children because their junk food diets are worse than during rationing, warn experts. Conditions such as scurvy and rickets are being fuelled by too many takeaways and microwave meals, it is claimed. But poor nutrition has not stopped many from becoming obese, it is feared, as they are putting on weight from eating the wrong sorts of food. Doctors’ leader Mark Temple said it was a "great tragedy" that some families gain less goodness from their food than those coping with rationing in the Second World War.

Fever in children If you’re like many parents, the first time your infant has a fever it’s a cause for concern. That’s because many of us have been brought up to see fever as a sign of sickness when really it’s a sign that you are well! Huh? Yes, it’s true. A fever is a sign that your body is working the way it was designed. Your body has the innate wisdom to raise its temperature in response to a foreign body – a virus or bacteria – that needs to be destroyed. Many medical practitioners advise you to give some type of child-strength fever reducer to your child to make him or her more “comfortable” and to bring the fever down. We have a different perspective. We believe that childhood fevers,

"Food standards are worse now than they were during the rationing during the war," he said. "That’s a strong indictment on the food industry." Latest figures show that 10 per cent of pupils are obese when they start school. The proportion doubles to almost 20 per cent in those about to start secondary education. Dr Temple, chairman of the British Medical Association’s public health medicine committee, said: "Obesity is a major health threat and we ought to be doing something about it." Sioned Quirke, a member of the British Dietetic Association, warned that relying on fast food was leading to a rise in diseases last commonly seen during the early 20th century. Moreover, when you give fever-reducing medications to a child, you’re overriding the intelligence of the body. This may actually prolong the length of the illness! Additionally, your child’s immune system may miss the opportunity to become resistant to the virus or bacteria that caused the infection in the first place! So, when your child gets a fever, remember that fever is the body’s innate immune response. Want to read more? Clinical reflexology enables treatment to be specifically adapted to your individual health care needs so the benefits are more effective and well-being can be achieved more successfully. You may have ongoing problems such as headaches, sciatica, PMT, menopause, asthma, shoulder problems, anxiety, IBS/digestive problems, general fatigue etc...all of which can be alleviated with reflexology. Not only that, reflexology relaxes the mind, body and spirit and so reduces stress and anxiety, particularly good for clients who find it hard to 'switch off' as it induces deep

Sometimes those little gems are right under our noses. Take for example, St Clare’s Prayer Centre, Newton, Porthcawl. This lovely house set in private gardens overlooks beautiful views across the Bristol Channel. Reading about the history of this home is inspiring. Olive Nicholls gave her home and gardens to the nuns of St Clare’s in recognition of their guidance and education to the school children of St Clare’s. In recognition of this gift, the nuns developed a home for people to come and have time out. The felt ethos being very

relaxation within a very short while. So how does it work? Clinical reflexology applies adapted techniques and pressure to very specific points in the feet, which correspond to imbalances within the body. It aims to balance and restore the endocrine system (your hormones), improve circulation around the body and work on blockages within the muscular skeletal system, by removing small crystals of uric acid. Hence, It aims to improve circulation and the elimination of toxins to increase energy and vitality whilst providing time out from our hectic lives. simple: quietness, contemplation, kindness and sharing. The prayer centre does have a long established group that meets every Wednesday at 7.30pm. The practice being silent meditation. The group is currently closed but will be meeting in early September. I discussed the opportunity of inviting various teachers of mindfulness, this request was greeted with open arms. In this spirit, we have organised a retreat day for 14th September. The retreat day will be lead by a Tibetan monk and a Thai monk. The day will begin with calm abiding meditation and then move to compassion based practices. Starting at 10am and finishing at 5pm, the day is free, a donation will be accepted. Hopscotch in Porthcawl On the pink and white pavement we chalked numbers. She could hop better than me, but we felt equal, never quarrelled. We were best friends.

Hospital volunteers We do our voluntary job At the Hospital everyday And the patients are amazed That we do it for no pay! We show them where the clinics are And if it's very far We phone for a wheelchair to sit in And the Porters take them there. When they are ready to go home An ambulance we can call So off they go on shaky legs Just hope that they won't fall We see all sorts come in here Lots much worse off than us And yet they seem so very brave And rarely make a fuss

My life had been a hotpotch; hers more seemly, more even. She had a fridge that made ice cubes. We had a pantry that stored Sunday meat for rissoles on Monday. The sun always shone on the ice-cream pavement. You felt like licking the chalk. It wasn’t the winning that counted, just the jumping side by side. We fished in beach pools too, or raced each other down her posh road on roller skates after Christmas. We had bruised knees and scabby hands.

We are a very friendly bunch Who give service with a smile So when someone says “Thank you Girls” It makes it all worthwhile! RUTH THOMAS Bridgend Poems are printed with spelling, capitalisation and punctuation as supplied. Emailed poems take priority.

Turn not your face away, my Love, Nor fear that I may see Those pocks and scars and blemishes That you would hide from me O, turn, my Love, that you may know You’re beautiful to me Turn, turn, my Love, as flower to sun, Bask in the healing rays O my great beauty, let my kiss Adorn your life with praise Walk, heart to heart, your hand in mine And always face to face PAULINE LEWIS Porthcawl

Face to face

I won't be long…

Mists and floods

I won’t be long I promise Just a quick pint with the boys 4 hours later, dinners ruined, He creeps in – what a noise!

The mists above the forests, Trees along the vales, With Murky, Misty mornings, On a dreary day in Wales.

I’m popping for some baccy I won’t be long my dear 3 hours later back he comes (Strange how baccy smells of beer!)

More water fills the reservoirs, So we don't have a drought, Unlike other parts of England, Who have had to go with nowt.

Just going down the garden, I won’t be long you know 2 hours later – tea’s in the dog. How long's it take to mow?

The rain has fallen lots this month, Torrential pour downs from above, With many family homes ruined, Caused by all the floods.

So I’ve drawn out all his money Bought a ticket for a song. Off on a world cruise tomorrow. But I’ve texted – I WON’T BE LONG!

Book of the month: INFERNO by Dan Brown

The latest Dan Brown is a breathless race-againsttime thriller that will grab you from page one and not let you go until you close the book. With 'seek and ye shall find' echoing in his head, eminent Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon awakes in a hospital bed with no recollection of where he is or how he got there, nor can he explain the macabre object that is found in his belongings. A threat to his life will propel him and a young doctor, Sienna Brooks, into a breakneck chase across the city of Florence. Only Langdon's knowledge of hidden passageways and ancient secrets can save them from the clutches of their unknown pursuers. With only a few lines from Dante's dark and epic masterpiece, The Inferno, to guide them, they must decipher a

FROM PIERS TO ETERNITY

by Hazel Preller Old ladies standing with their feet in the sea are the unlikely stars of Hazel Preller’s debut book From Piers to Eternity. These old ladies are in fact those quintessentially English seaside piers, and all becomes clear when you start reading this delightful tale of how Hazel and Jay Preller met and fell in love on Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier and then endeavoured to have a kiss on the end of every pier in the country. The pier kissing odyssey saw the couple travel over 7000 miles, visiting long, short, old and new piers, debunking a few myths and falling in love with piers too, they ended their journey, as

only pier kissers can, with a wedding on Brighton Pier in 2010. This fascinating and beautifully descriptive story with photographs taken by the author tells of the history and vital statistics of each of the sixty piers that they visited and is told with a delicious sense of humour. A wonderful history, mini tourist guide and love story all in one book will compel you to visit your nearest seaside status symbol and see it in an entirely new light. From Piers to Eternity by Hazel Preller is out now, published by Indepenpress. RRP £9.99 ISBN 9781780036502 HAZEL PRELLER

Art in Focus

A new and exciting exhibition comes to the National Museum of Wales, in Cardiff this summer: Visions of Mughal India: The Collection of Howard Hodgkin (27th July - 3rd November). Howard Hodgkin has been a passionate collector of Indian paintings since his school days and his collection is considered one of the finest of its kind in the world. It includes illustrations of epics and myths, royal portraits, scenes of court life and hunt-

ing, and a spectacular group of elephant portraits. Some of the works in the collection vividly evoke the urban or daily life of India, a country which has inspired Hodgkin on his frequent visits made over some 50 years. The exhibition also represents most of the main types of Indian court painting that flourished during the Mughal period (c. 1550 1850). This is a personal collection, formed by an artist’s eye, as Hodgkin says himself about this exhibition: “These pictures have been chosen because I thought they were beautiful, because they touched my emotions, and not for any scholarly purposes. It is a collection made by an artist. I hope you enjoy looking at it.” Daily tours free to the public: 12.30pm.

single “Dreamer I Know”. It’s a travesty they’re not! I met up with my long-time music partner Daley B and had that beer with him, and caught his gig before his return to his new home in Martyn Joseph Czech! Let’s hope that Porthcawl’s Steve Rogers makes a full recovery after his recent illness – we’re all thinking of you, buddy. I must also wish a belated happy birthday to rock star Mark Jones and my two minders Liz and Jayne who both keep me on the straight and narrow (well, sometimes). And don’t forget Newton Beer and Pop Charity Festival on Newton Green featuring eight live bands on Saturday 24th August. STAG 07979 971127

As always, there’s plenty to write about. Great to see South Wales singer/songwriter Martyn Joseph getting a lot of national radio play. Martyn is best known for his successful single “Dolphins Make Me Cry” when he was signed to the Sony record label, but still has a large cult fan-base especially in Canada, and his current album “Songs For The Coming Home” is brilliant. Check him out on YouTube. Still on radio stations, let’s hope some of the local 'Jocks' start playing the new Steve Strange’s Visage

so welcome by Malcolm and Julie, the Club Steward and Stewardess, as well as by Mike Feeley, the hard-working Secretary, and the club members. We are sure that the Bryntirion community at large will also be sorry to witness the demise of their club. In the 53 years of the choir's existence, this will be only our third permanent change of rehearsal venue. Having spent

the first 45 years in the Police Club, Waterton, we moved to Hermon Chapel, Nolton Street until 2005 when we moved to Bryntirion. Our first rehearsal at St Mary's will be Thursday 1st August 2013. We are most grateful for the kindness of Father William Isaac and all in St Mary's parish for their immediate offer to accommodate the choir. St Mary's Church, with its fan-

tastic acoustics is the choir's favourite local concert venue, and the church hall has all the facilities needed in a rehearsal room.

Saturday 3rd August 2013 to Sunday 1st September 2013. Open 11am - 4.30pm weekends and bank holidays. In addition, this year the group will be holding an exhibition at the Y Centre, John Street which will coincide with the Centre’s August Craft Fair on Saturday 31st August 2013. This will be the first opportunity for the public to visit ‘Silures in the Loft’ situated on the top floor of the Y Centre in a new exhibition space. A lift is available.

Porthcawl Runners

It’s been a busy past few weeks for Porthcawl Runners, with races coming thick and fast this time of year. Some notable performances from Geraint Lewis who finished in 6th place in the Beast of Bryn where he was accompanied by Phil Protheroe, Rebecca Hambrook and Dave Breen. Nicola Thomas came third in her age category at the Llanelli 10k and the Porthcawl Parkrun has seen some big improvements for Alwyn Thomas, Rebecca, Louise Evans and husband Geraint.

The photograph shows Cllr Tony Berrow, Chairman of Laleston Community Council commiserating with Councillor Haydn Morgan, Mayor of Bridgend whose team lost the match three games to one. The Mayor, ever the competitor, claimed that his team were overcome with unseasonal heat fatigue. The undefeated champions of the evening were the very competitive team of the ‘Davies’ representing Laleston Community Council, County Borough Councillor Pam Davies, Community Councillor’s Roger Davies and Briony Davies.

The event was held, as usual, at the Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club, Rock Park, on Tuesday 9th July 2013. The team representing the Rotary Club of Bridgend included Edgar Burt, Stan Harding, Roy Hodgkinson and Coach/Bag

Carrier Neil Solman. Twenty-four teams entered the competition and after we had won four of our five games (our only loss being to a previous winner of this event, Aberaeron), it was announced that Bridgend had been awarded third place. Second place went to Brecon A Team, with the winners being Pontllanfraith, which had this year's District Governor David Curtis as a team member!! I have to record, by the enclosed photographs, the very last end of the last match when Edgar, as our Skip for the day, achieved these three remarkable shots. An excellent event at a beautiful venue.
