Dear Editor, The annual charity classic car Cwm to Coast Run, organised by Bridgend MG Owners’ Club, this year attracted a record-breaking number of entrants. Almost 90 classic car enthusiasts from across the UK converged on the borough roads recently to join local members in raising funds for Sandville Court Self Help Centre in Porthcawl. The annual run, held each June, is one of the largest classic car road runs held in South Wales, with entrants travelling from across the UK to take part and often holiday in the local area too.

This year’s run, which was sponsored by local businesses, started at the Waterton Centre in Bridgend. New Borough Mayor Cllr Richard Young and his Mayoress Mrs Young joined the organisers to flag off each of the cars. The entrants then follow a prepared route which covered the valleys to the north of the borough before travelling through the Vale of Glamorgan and along the Heritage coast to conclude with a meal at the Grove Golf Club. Bridgend Borough Mayor, Cllr Richard Young, said: “The Mayoress and I were delighted to see so many people attending from both the Borough and from far afield – it reinforced just how popular the Run is becoming. I know that the Club very much appreciated participants, both local and those who have travelled distances from various towns in England, taking part. It’s a wonderful gesture in showing support to the Bridgend MG Owner’s Club and their charity – the Sandville Court Self Help group in Porthcawl – a very worthy cause which is used by many people. Big Step, Big Success! Dear Editor, On Saturday 20th June over 50 people took a ‘Big Step’ to stand against bullying, walking 18 miles from Nantymoel to Kenfig Nature Reserve raising awareness and funds for Stand Against Bullying, a new group trying to reduce bullying behaviour and its consequences amongst young people. Jamie Uren, Chair of SAB “As a young person who experienced bullying, I believe everyone, no matter their age, gender or race deserves the right to live their lives without the fear of being bullied. SAB gives the power back to the young people of Bridgend, allowing them to have their voices heard and make a difference to the lives of other young people!”

Driving Safety Issue Porthcawl Pier In A State Dear Editor, Going to the Lighthouse end of the pier to watch the arrival of the Balmoral recently, I was disgusted at the state of the area the rubbish that has been left by the fishermen. Not only was it hurtful on the eyes it also irritated the nasal passage. The person with me suggested the council send someone to clean it up. I suggested they stop the fishing until the area can be used more hygenically. Not the place for visitors to visit, especially with children. The council do need to send their health people there to see the state of the area. Ken Evans, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I believe it should be brought to the local councils attention that urgent action is necessary to prevent what is coming an increasing hazard on our local roads around Porthcawl. Myself and other drivers familiar with the local roads leading onto the A48 at Pyle and Bridgend may have noticed the sudden increase in the height of the undergrowth and grass on roundabouts and at key junctions resulting in a severe restriction of visibility with regards to oncoming traffic. This situation is only likely to get worse and there is an increasing risk of accidents. Something needs to be done to sort this out as soon as possible. G Pearce, Porthcawl

Parking Mad Dear Editor, It was interesting to read an article in a national daily newspaper recently that since all the parking meters have been out of action in Cardigan (West Wales) that store owners have reported an increase in trade of between 20 and 50%. In light of this information do you think our Council could reconsider their intention to start charging people to park along the seafront in Porthcawl and give our traders something to cheer about. Porthcawl Primary News As usual the end of the school year meant we were busier than ever! We performed ‘Hoodwinked’ to two sold out crowds. It was an incredible performance and everyone from the stage crew to Robin Hood did an amazing job. Every year our pupils rise to the challenge and show everyone how talented they are! We have also been to the premier of our song ‘Be All You Can Be.’ The event took place at the National Botanical Gardens of Wales. It was a strange but brilliant experience to see ourselves up on the big screen! The song can now be viewed on Youtube and is available to download on itunes and Amazon amongst others. All proceeds from the song will go to The Botanical Gardens of Wales. Finally we have given our Year 6 pupils a great send off. They spend a hectic week abseiling, extreme rock pooling and zip lining in Pendine followed by our annual end of year Prom. A big thank you to all the parents who helped organise the event which was enjoyed by all. We wish our Year 6 pupils the best of luck in the future and hope everyone has an amazing summer! French Student Exchange

Twenty of our students and three of our staff from Porthcawl Comprehensive School have just returned from a French exchange trip to Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire where they had the most fantastic time. So much so, it is hard to pick the highlight of our stay! We were overwhelmed by the very warm welcome of the head teacher and all the staff at La Joliverie School. Upon our arrival the deputy mayor of Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire, Porthcawl’s twin town and Mrs Merceron, deputy head of La Joliverie, made wonderful speeches about the importance of the exchange between our two schools and of how learning a language enables young people to broaden their horizons and experience different cultures. Just like us, they hope it will be the start of many more trips of this kind. Lots of activities were planned during our stay including a day at the beautiful La Baule beach and a visit to the theme park Puy-du-Fou where the students were captivated by a series of medieval re-enactments. We also had an evening at the crêperie, tasting delicious savoury and sugary pancakes. The French and Welsh students enjoyed themselves so much that some have already signed up for next year’s trip! It was really great to see the students developing their French while reinforcing the friendships formed when the French students visited us in March. Corneli Primary News Our rounders and basketball teams have had an enjoyable season. We are so proud that Rhys Chick, Harriette Williams and Molly Lacey represented us in the Western League at the Bridgend Classic Basketball Tournament, well done all! The Year 2 children have done well too, successfully completing their Kerbcraft road safety training. They also joined the children from class 4, on a trip to the Botanic Garden of Wales where they had great fun hunting for mini-beasts. There was also fun to be had in Story Café with Madelaine Moon MP and a giant caterpillar! We are so grateful to all our storytellers who have come and made our Café so special. Our Year 6 children have prepared for their transition with visits to their comprehensive schools and enjoyed dressing in style for an exciting Prom. Mr Mills and staff send all good wishes to them and to Mr Reid who is also leaving, for every success in the future and to all our families for the support they have given throughout the year. SCHOOLS Porthcawl Comprehensive School Team are National Consumer Champions 2015 Students from Porthcawl Comprehensive School beat tough competition from six other schools in the grand finals of Young Consumers of the Year competition on Thursday 25th June held at the House of Commons.

Hundreds of schools from across the country entered the competition to find Britain’s best-informed young consumers. Seven teams of four 14 to 17-year-olds made it to the finals of this knockout consumer quiz after coming top in qualifying heats and then regional finals. The winning team from Porthcawl was made up of Jack Bridger, Nat King, Matthew Dang and Felicity Williamson-Sarll who each took home a £50 gift voucher, a goody bag of prizes plus the College of Fellows trophy and £1,000 for their school. Sarah-Jane James, Teacher in charge of Business Studies at Porthcawl Comprehensive School said: “The team has been independent, committed and they have all worked extra hours putting a lot of time into the competition. They beat 11 local schools at the regional finals in Cardiff and I’m amazed at their knowledge and understanding. The Young Consumers of the Year competition is a fantastic contest which students can gain a great deal from and the team thoroughly enjoyed the two days in London learning about consumer law.” Porthcawl Comprehensive School reached the final by winning a tough semi-final and then clinched the title after pulling ahead of the other teams in the early rounds. They went on to the finals beating Ayr Academy (2nd place) from Scotland and Chepstow School (3rd place) from Wales and winning the competition. Abbey Grange Academy from Leeds came in fourth. Young Consumers of the Year, organised by CTSI, offers young people the chance to show their awareness of their environment, and their ability to be streetwise about what they eat, what and how they buy and how they manage their money. This year the competition was an impressive two day event with the first round starting in The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) Conference Centre and the teams competing in four hour long challenges and a treasure hunt spanning across key London attractions. The points from each round were recorded and put towards the final quiz. House of Commons was the location for round two of the competition and grand final quiz. Teams then had the luxury of being treated to a barbeque lunch aboard the Elizabethan luxury charter at Westminster Pier followed by speeches, presentations to the winners and celebrations. Porthcawl students are now scheduled to meet up with First Minister Carwyn Jones over the holidays to discuss their success, and there is talk of a link up Seaside News | 14

with an American team as well as a further competition against Trading Standards employees themselves. CTSI chief executive Leon Livermore said: “It is fantastic to see so many young people take part in this event. I’m confident that the knowledge they gain will stand them in good stead for their life ahead as consumers or indeed as good business people. In today’s increasingly complex world, it is becoming more and more important for everyone to know about their rights and responsibilities so they can stand up for themselves and make informed decisions. “It was a very exciting final. Congratulations to Porthcawl Comprehensive School; very well done!”

The end of the summer term at St. Clare’s was jam packed with activities and trips. The Nursery pupils took part in their annual ‘Big Toddle’, which raised £369 for Barnardo’s. Everyone had a great afternoon dressed up as pirates toddling around the Hall. In the Senior School, local author Maria Grace visited pupils to congratulate the winners of an art competition - which she set as a challenge to find the best illustrations for her novel, ‘White Petals’. Four of our pupils (Steffan, Olivia, Bibiana and Dylan) had their artwork chosen and will now be published in the book. Well

done to our talented artists! We were all very pleased with the grading of “Good” which was awarded to us in our ESTYN Inspection report, published in July. Bryntirion School – ‘Life Week’

Well, what am amazing three nights of spectacular performances of ‘CATS’ by pupils at Pencoed Comprehensive School. The show was sold out and the audience members who managed to get tickets weren’t disappointed in the slightest. Every aspect of the show was so professional – from the costumes, make-up, the sound and lighting, the music, the performances and the direction and choreography. The production was evidence of the hard work put in by drama department staff (Mrs Kay Smith and Mrs Alex Hewitt) and pupils over the last year. Mrs Rhian Jenkins (head of music) and the musicians complimented the performances superbly. The enthusiasm of the cast and the production team hadn’t waned at all over the many months of hard work as was evident from the performances. The dancing, singing and acting couldn’t be faulted. The ‘wow’ factor was definitely there. Not only did the cats ‘wow’ everyone from the stage but they also surprised a number of the audience members as they snuggled up to them (as cats do!) in the hall during the evening. Pupils didn’t only perform but a number also assisted with the direction, choreography costumes and make-up. Truly a team effort. The audience clearly showed their appreciation of the singing and dancing performances during the three shows, leading to standing ovations at the end of each evening. Linda Harpwood

Recently at Bryntirion Comprehensive School we have held a ‘Life Week’ for Years 7, 8 and 9. Pupils have undertaken a range of activities such as CPR training, first aid, developing team building skills and handling money and budgeting. The week has been developed and organised by our fantastic school council, who have been working closely with the resident school nurse (Mrs Jerwood) and St John Ambulance, who kindly volunteered their expertise. We are thrilled with how well this week has gone and the school council is already passionately planning to expand on their success next year. Here at Bryntirion we believe strongly in our motto ‘Dysgwn Sut I Fyw’ meaning ‘We Will Learn How to Live’ and this has truly been reflected in our life skills project this year. Taking this initiative forward, Ethan Chalmers, a sixth form student, with input from Dr Phil Hammond, has developed a banner using his acronym ‘CLANGERS’ to promote the importance of health and well being within the school. Cynffig: Challenge, Commit, Succeed. As I write this, we are coming to the end of another great year at Cynffig. One of my proudest moments recently was when three of our Year 12 Engineering Education Scheme pupils represented us at the Royal Academy of Engineering, delivering a highly complex presentation to industry professionals, STEM leaders, and Fellows of the Academy. Supported by our Technology Department and by the General Manager of Sony UK, Pencoed, delegates were amazed by the performance of Lucy Davies, Ross Hooper and Laura Underhill; to be told that no other school had ever impressed them more made us immensely proud. Being July, we have also been rounding off the year with events - which have become almost a part of the fabric of Cynffig. Our friends from Louisiana once more spent a wonderful day with us, sharing their music and culture. Sports Day, too, offered some impressive performances, and our Year 13 enjoyed a really lovely evening of celebration at the Atlantic Hotel. Great Results Ahead Of School Merger School inspectors Estyn have praised the ‘excellent’ learning experiences to be found at Mynydd Cynffig Infants ahead of its merger with the junior school next month. Before the new combined primary becomes operational in September, Estyn has invited the infants school to produce a written case study so that other schools across Wales can learn from their example. The new primary school will continue to use the existing sites to cater for children aged three to 11 while plans are developed to bring them together at a single location in the Kenfig Hill area. I’d like to thank retiring infant school head teacher Mrs Amanda Stanford for her wonderful leadership. ‘Excellent’ judgements from Estyn are rare as they identify national best practice, so I can’t think of a better tribute to what she and her team have achieved. With the merger just around the corner, this is a huge boost for the new primary school and its pupils, which will be led by junior school head Mr Neil Davis - another first class head teacher. I am certain that the new school will ensure that pupils continue to learn and grow as they make the transition from infants to juniors, and beyond. Thank you to the very distinguished visitors who came to our school – His Worshipful, Mayor of Bridgend County Borough Council, Councillor Richard Young and Mayoress Mrs Annette Young. They had heard how much our school has improved since the last inspection that they came to see for themselves, along with Councillors Megan Butcher and Huw David. They toured the school, pausing in every class to speak to the children and answer questions, the pupils were very impressed! The P.F.A. raised over £1000 at the school fete, and £250 at the school disco. They have spent some of the money treating Year Six children to a three course meal at The Angel Inn at Mawdlam! Zoolab visited The Willows, they brought along a tarantula, a rat, a corn snake, [which all the children held], a hermit crab and other exhibits. It was a very interesting lesson! We have received a letter from our First Minister, Carwyn Jones, congratulating us on our recent Estyn inspection report. And finally, it’s that very sad time of year again, when we say goodbye to our Year Six, some of whom began in Nursery. As I write, it’s nearly the end of the summer term and what a busy one it has been! We have held transition days for the year 6 pupils, including a special day out at St Fagan’s, and we look forward to welcoming our new year 7 pupils in September. Year 10 and Year 12 students enjoyed their work experience. The Sixth Form Prom was held this year at the Cardiff Museum. The school visit to Oakwood Park was a success despite the heavy rain. We would like to thank our head girl, Connie Osgood-Finney, and head boy, Rhys Cahalane, for all their hard work and wish them every success in the future. The new head boy and head girl for 2015-2016 are William Kay and Hannah Cahalane. Congratulations to both! Where Did The Year Go? Well another school year has drawn to an end! The last few weeks of term saw a hive of activity with Sports Day, the Summer Fete (and it rained!), the Ugly Bug Ball, Year 2 ‘Moving On’ Assembly, Presentation Evening, the Year 6 Prom and Trips to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, Margam Park, Cardiff Bay and Porthcawl. We say ‘goodbye’ to Mrs Elizabeth Benjamin who is retiring after 25 years at Pil Primary School. Mrs Benjamin has been a dedicated member of staff, she has organised the ‘Cymanfa Ganu’ and conducted the school choir for many years. Years 1 & 2 have been exploring their community this term. They have walked all around Porthcawl, taken lots of photographs and made maps of their routes! The children have been finding out about Porthcawl in the past from old photographs and films. They especially liked their visit to the Lifeboat Station and a special thank you should go to Mr Abraham for an informative afternoon. The children are also looking forward to a visit to Newton Village to do some sketching! Year 5 and 6 visited a local Bush Craft venue in Merthyr Mawr. The children engaged in practical activities during the day including shelter construction, team building and hiking across a range of terrain back to school. The weather was completely glorious and now the children’s next task is to design their own campsite for our younger pupils to experience. Year 6 enjoyed their end of year trip to Atlantic College again this year. They took part in a variety of outdoor activities, canoeing seemed to be a popular choice from beginning to end, getting into the wetsuits, controlling the canoes and then struggling out of their wetsuits! Taking part in the College Olympics was another favourite. Those children who chose not to go to the college had fun taking part in many activities including cookery and crazy golf. Active Travel Plans Move Up A Gear

The Rest Home – Up For Sale Again!

Plans to improve walking and cycling routes in areas that include Porthcawl and Pyle are moving up a gear, and we want to know what you think about them. As part of the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013, Bridgend County Borough Council has to come up with a 15-year vision for a network of travel options that encourage people to leave the car at home when making short journeys around the area. As recent research by Sustrans has shown that one in five car journeys is often less than two miles long, the plan also focuses on ways of linking important community hubs, key sites and transportation links. We’re currently mapping out the existing network so we can identify where new local routes, cycle parking, crossing points and other facilities could be installed. This long-term plan aims to bring many benefits to communities across the county borough, and we want local people to be fully involved – that’s why we are carrying out public consultation between now and October. Porthcawl residents will be surprised and perhaps concerned to hear that one of the town’s most iconic buildings – The Rest Home – is up for sale again. It’s less than two years since the Trustees closed this holiday and respite home in the teeth of fierce opposition from local residents, who made use of its facilities, and elderly and disabled people from a wide area who used it as a holiday venue. The closure went ahead and the site was sold for £1.23 million to Mayo Developments of Caerphilly. Now, they have put the site up for sale with an asking price of £4m – considerably more than the trustees of the charity, which owned the site, managed to obtain. Planning consent has been granted for the Grade 2 Listed main building to be converted into apartments. Did the trustees include a financial claw-back clause in the contract of sale in the event of planning consent being granted which would increase the value of the property? This is a very distinctive building, which must be retained to benefit the area even if only by providing people with a place to live. But it’s a shame that all community use of the facilities has ceased.

Give Lifesaving Skills To Nursery Staff Following calls by St John Cymru-Wales, the Welsh Liberal Democrats led a cross party debate in the National Assembly calling on the Welsh Government to improve the provision of paediatric first aid training for nursery staff and to assess options for requiring all nursery staff to complete an officially recognised paediatric first aid course. In March the UK Government announced that training in paediatric first aid will be a legal requirement for nursery staff in England. This followed the tragic death of nine-month-old Millie Thompson who died after choking on her lunch at her nursery in 2012. First aid and life-saving skills are invaluable and I applaud the strong campaign led by Millie Thompson’s parents for all nursery staff to be trained in paediatric first aid. At present, regulations for nursery settings in Wales simply require that at least one person caring for children has a suitable first aid qualification, whereas in England training in paediatric first aid will be a legal requirement for all nursery staff. Nursery staff do an incredible job, but a young child can choke without warning and often without any visible signs. Fighting Back Against The Scammers Fraudsters tried to trick Bridgend County Borough residents into giving up bank details recently with their latest con, but went away empty handed when clued-up householders sent them packing. Pretending to be council staff, they asked people for confidential information so they could receive compensation for a recent accident. But their timing was way off as it was right in the middle of Scam Awareness Month! News An Interesting New Menu Option The challenge to meet the growing demand worldwide for food and food security is a global priority. Safe, adequate and nutritious food should be accessible to everyone at all times. Globally meat consumption has increased by 154% in developing countries and 27% in developed countries and with the consumption of the main source of vegetable protein, pulses, going down we need to find an alternative. For humans, could edible insects be the answer? There are at least 1,900 insect species known to be safe to eat for humans, and the mainstream consumption of insect food could offer significant benefits in terms of food security and sustainability. Somewhat surprisingly the protein and nutrient profile of insects generally matches that of meat. Even better to hear is that, insect rearing produces less greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions per kg of protein when compared to pig and cattle production. Of course the mandatory checks which are placed on meat products must also be applied to insect foods to ensure they are free of viral, parasite and fungal pathogens. A problem that may come up is negative associations, how ‘unnatural’ the food is perceived to be. The view that insects are disgusting is deep-rooted in Western society, and achieving cultural acceptance of insect-based foods will be a challenge. However eating insects is traditional in South East Asia and many tropical regions. Some food outlets in the UK have already got on board with Planet Organic selling bags of whole meal worms, crickets and grasshoppers. Can you imagine eating insects being available in the supermarket shelf or should they be left under the log?

Porthcawl schoolchildren discover their Coast with Harbourside Coastal Science and Discovery. Our Coastal Communities Funding has enabled Year Three students from West Park Primary School, Porthcawl, to explore their coast with Porthcawl Harbourside Coastal Science and Discovery, part of Porthcawl Harbourside CIC, who are developing Porthcawl Maritime Centre. After carrying out a beach clean in Porthcawl, students recorded litter collected to learn about how it affects marine life. The litter, containing plastic bottles, lids, wrappers, balloons, flip-flops and wet wipes was listed into groups. They learned that most litter comes from the public and fishing. Year Three then looked at how marine litter poses a threat to marine animals, their environment and visitors. They are now creating public information campaign posters, using what they have learned during their sessions with Claire Godfrey, of Harbourside. Claire said, “The students really enjoyed the experience, and we are grateful to Trecco Bay Holiday Park who have kindly donated a prize for the best poster.” Harbourside are offering beachside events over the summer, including Porpoise Spotting, Family Beach Discovery Days and Rockpool Rambles. News Time To Use New Law To Stop School Closures

Ty Elis- Recognising The Importance Of Counselling

The new Well-Being of Future Generations Act could be used to stop further school closures across Wales, including in Bridgend county borough. The law, which was passed in April this year, was introduced to make local authorities and other bodies think long term about services, specifically compelling them to ensure we have ‘”cohesive communities” and “a society that promotes and protects … the Welsh language.” This Act makes it law that local authorities must deliver viable communities. What is also worrying is that Welsh medium education is likely to come under pressure like never before, but we can use another part of the Future Generations Act to rein back the council and protect both our languages. Schools are a vital component in ensuring we have smaller communities that people want to live in. This new argument that some pupils get more than others is a non-starter, because children and young people in villages miss out on other services and facilities, such as regular bus services and cinemas. ‘Evening up’ per-pupil spend further disadvantages those children. We need to be breathing new life into the areas in which they live, not making it tougher to stay there.

Recently, I hosted an event for Ty Elis Counselling Service at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. Based in Porthcawl, Ty Elis is a charity that has been in practice since 1996 and provides counselling and psychotherapy services. The aim of the event was to raise the profile of the organisation and to draw attention to the work of the 40 counsellors who work to improve the mental wellbeing of individuals in need. At Ty Elis, the staff do not label their clients with diagnoses, instead they prefer to focus on working with them to regain their autonomy and take responsibility and control for the issues affecting their lives. At the event, Ty Elis staff had an opportunity to speak to Assembly Members and Support Staff about the services that they offer and to inform them of their new Workplace Mental Wellbeing Training that they can offer businesses. I was delighted to host this important event at the Senedd. It was a great opportunity for the charity to raise its profile and to promote their services. As your new Assembly Member, I’ve taken the opportunity to get out and about as often as possible and meet with different people and organisations across the area. With the 70th anniversary of VJ Day upon us, I paid a visit to Porthcawl Museum – a real ‘jewel’ in Porthcawl’s crown. Having been threatened with closure, the passion of the volunteers in fighting to save their museum absolutely shone through, and it was clear that failure was never an option for them. Really noticeable were links between the community of Porthcawl and events that have shaped history. There was a 17th Century Naval Cannon that had been discovered on a local beach and was being restored at the museum – if only exhibit items could talk! That said, the brilliantly presented exhibitions ‘did all the talking’ for us, and I’d recommend to anyone that they pay this wonderful local attraction a visit. With VJ Day upon us, it is vital that we never forget the sacrifices made by all sides. I also think it important that we reflect on the peace and friendship that has flourished between our nations since, and the pertinent lessons for today that we can all learn from this. FEATURES New Domestic Abuse Service

Calan DVS, a leading South Wales domestic abuse charity, has recently undergone a merger with Bridgend Women’s Aid, and has been awarded a three year contract to develop and deliver a new integrated domestic abuse service for Bridgend County Borough Council. The contract will provide opportunities to further develop domestic abuse services and improve outcomes for individuals and families experiencing domestic violence and abuse. The new services will include housing support and emergency accommodation, training for professionals, counselling services, support services for children and young people, and much more. To celebrate the integration of Bridgend Women’s Aid and the launch of the new services, an event was held at Porthcawl Grand Pavilion recently. The event at marked the launch of the new domestic abuse services, and also celebrated the thirty year legacy of Bridgend Women’s Aid, while looking to the future following the merger with Calan DVS. Ambassador of Bridgend Women’s Aid, Katie Elin-Salt, a Welsh actress, delivered a video message at the event to share her own personal journey through domestic abuse and encourage others to seek support. News From The Talbot The Talbot has been very busy lately with the new classes. The Zumba class is very popular and has been extended to two classes a week, one on a Wednesday from 7–8pm and the new class on a Sunday, from 6.30–7.30pm. The Whist Drive is also gaining a lot of interest, why not join us on a Wednesday from 6.30–8.30pm. The other new class is Silver Waves, a meeting group for the over fifties who meet on the first Tuesday afternoon of the month. Of course, we still have our twice-weekly bingo sessions, on Monday evenings and Friday afternoons, and lunch is offered on Wednesdays and Fridays. Incidentally, do you know the Talbot Hall is great for Children’s birthday parties? The hall is big enough to take a bouncy castle, face painting, puppet show, or disco, as well as seating for up to 35 children. Our next fundraising event is a Sixties night with Rocking Dave Riley. Through Christian Eyes Did you know there is a church at the Trecco Bay holiday park? It is a small chapel with a high angled roof near the leisure facilities, and throughout the summer the churches of Porthcawl put on a regular Sunday - Friday programme of activities for the holidaymakers. On Sundays there is a short Christian service at 12.30pm, with varying styles of worship depending on which church is leading the meeting. Then Monday to Friday, at times advertised on the notice board, there is a varied programme of activities for children and adults; including games, crafts, coffee morning and quizzes. Most people drop in for just a short while to see what’s going on, especially on those occasions when the weather is not at it’s best. Many are pleasantly surprised at the warm welcome from the Christian volunteers helping make their holiday more enjoyable. In this and many other ways the Christian churches of Porthcawl add value to our community. It is a practical demonstration of the teaching of Jesus ‘let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven’ (Matthew 5:16). Thank You To All Our Supporters Recently, a charity event was held at St David’s Church Hall in Nottage, by the Sker WI. As friends of the local Porthcawl Stroke Club a sum of £300 was raised. It was a very enjoyable evening. The WI ladies made delicious cakes and there were lots of donations for the raffle prizes. The Cheese and wine with nibbles, got everyone in the mood for a game of Kurling, which was great fun. Mrs Rose Power from the Porthcawl Stroke Club made a table top full of knitted items, which were extremely well made. My twin grandchildren were given two little mice made by Rose with little knitted hats on their heads, they were so cute and my other grandson was given a hippopotamus made by Rose, which he was extremely delighted with. The hippopotamus has now joined his other animal friends at the end of his bed! Also friends of the Porthcawl Stroke Club are two really lovely ladies who are members of Trinity Church - Freda Rogers and Haulwen. Both had table top Stalls - Freda made cards, which were of a very high standard, and Haulwen made embroidered cushions, face flannels towels etc - all specially designed to suit individual needs. FEATURES One Pup Leaves, Another Arrives As a first-time puppy walker for Guide Dogs, this was the day I’d been dreading. Golden retriever Berry, who had been with me since she was eight weeks old, was off to guide dog training school. When they came to collect her, Berry wagged her tail and skipped up the drive without a backward glance. I shed a tear, but there was no time to waste. I had agreed to take on a new puppy, and he was arriving in just four hours. I felt like a hotel chambermaid preparing for the next guest! I made his bed and fetched the big teddies from the loft. Mabey is another golden retriever, but a totally different personality. He was timid to start, but is gaining confidence daily. Until he has had all his injections our trips are limited, but we’ve visited DIY stores, Pyle Garden Centre and the Pines, where he barked at his reflection in the shop windows! I’d planned to take a break between pups, but now I’m glad I had Mabey straight away. It made it easier to say goodbye to Berry, who is progressing well. Fancy puppy walking for Guide Dogs? Companions Project Celebrate 4th Year

The Big Lottery funded Community Companions befriending for over 50s project recently celebrated its fourth year at a special event in the Heronston Hotel in Bridgend. Volunteer befrienders have visited isolated older people in their home, supported them to visit one of the many community cafés throughout Bridgend County Borough or any other activity of their choice. With special guests Janice Gregory AM, Clare Lane from the Older People’s Commission and Simon Jones from the Big Lottery Fund, over 60 project beneficiaries, volunteers and partner organisations joined the celebration. Janice Gregory AM said: “Community Companions is a great scheme and I was delighted to be a part of the event. Befriending and helping people who experience loneliness and isolation is so very important and I applaud those who are prepared to volunteer their time to help others.” The event gave everyone the opportunity to hear directly from volunteers and people who have benefited from befriending, showing the impact that the project has had on their lives, demonstrating through the impact of isolation and loneliness on older people and how befriending has helped people. Volunteering Opportunity At Parc Prison

Since my last report the Guild has been active with its usual groups meeting - craft, games, literary and the ever popular luncheon club. We had an excellent visit to Llanelli House which I can thoroughly recommend. Three members went to the National AGM in Glasgow attended by Princess Anne, and Judith Orphan carried the banner of the South Wales Federation with pride! Our speaker in June was Mr Don Llewellyn on ‘A Life Behind the Camera’. After nearly 40 years working in television as a film producer and director he had a fund of interesting anecdotes and pictures about what he called “his truly privileged career”. Our speaker last month was Miss Debra John with ‘An Afternoon with Amy Dillwyn’. This was a fascinating presentation about an unsung heroine from Swansea - a woman in a man’s world over a hundred years ago! We do not meet in August but have two events to which visitors can come - an outing to Tredegar House on August 12th and afternoon tea at the Grove on August 19th. Porthcawl Coastguard Article At a recent well-attended occasion at the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl, the Rotary Club of Porthcawl held its annual Handover Evening. After an excellent meal, the ceremonial part of the evening began. The main part, of course, was the ‘handover’ itself when the retiring President, Wayne Warlow, passed his chain of office to the incoming President, Jeff Perren OBE to great applause. The Rotarians and friends heard Wayne’s retiring speech, one from Porthcawl Rotary’s Sandra Townsend - who had spent a wonderful Rotary year as District Governor – and also one from the Mayor, Cllr. David Newton-Williams who, as is the custom with Porthcawl Rotary Club, becomes an Honorary Rotarian for his year of office. Robert Aubrey became the new President Elect and Rowena Millward the new President Nominee. Lastly, and perhaps with the most applause, came the news that long-serving Past President, Jean Schofield, had been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her incredible charity work. As the summer season got into swing, and with the improved weather, so did the number of call outs. These kept us busy with incidents ranging from missing children, assisting the lifeboat with body boarders at Rest Bay and helping our neighbouring stations at Port Talbot and Llantwit Major. We also headed inland to complete a training search exercise with the Port Talbot team at Margam Park. As usual we took part in the town’s annual carnival along with having a stand at the summer festival. After celebrating our 180th Anniversary last year we were kindly invited to an evening in the Grand Pavilion to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the re-establishment of Porthcawl Lifeboat. We thank them for our invite and once again congratulate them on this milestone. Porthcawl’s largest self-help learning group celebrated its anniversary in wonderful style at the Hi Tide with an afternoon full of inventive performances from its various interest groups. With almost 500 members and 35 different groups, Porthcawl U3A’s 20th Birthday party was full of home-spun fun, talent and entertainment providing the best in community leisure and pleasure.

The many comedy sketches, mini plays and stories were worthy of a place on Britain’s Got Talent with the comical guile of the local Celts seeing off the attacking Romans being just a taster. Representing various interest groups, members attempted work not only in English but Welsh, French, Latin and even Russian plus Gladys and Mary’s latest bus stop ear-wagging gossip news. Highlights of the day? In truth the afternoon was just one big highlight with group after group contributing to everyone’s enjoyment, a great tribute to the leadership of the various interest group conveners. Chairman Handel Davies conducted the memorable day and presidents Dorothy and Doug Jones cut the birthday cake. Perseid Meteor Shower I’m always surprised when people tell me they have never seen a meteor or shooting star streaking across the night sky. Whilst it’s possible to observe a meteor on any clear night of the year, your chances are much improved if you look during the time that one of the many annual meteor showers is taking place. Most meteors are just tiny pieces of debris about the size of a grain of sand. When a comet visits the Sun, it leaves in its wake a trail of dusty particles, which crosses Earth’s orbit. So each time Earth crosses the trail of a comet, it collides with debris, which burns up in our atmosphere to produce a shooting star. One such comet is Swift-Tuttle - which last appeared in 1992. Every August, we cross its dusty path and it will be possible to view up to 80 meteors an hour during peak activity. The best time is an hour before sunrise on August 13th. Good quantities of meteors should be seen for a few nights before and after the 13th and the whole of August is still well above average. Good hunting! Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

Tools For Africa Tools for Self Reliance

Our picture this month shows members of the group with one of the pallets, partially sponsored by the CAMEO (Trinity) group, loaded with kits made up of high quality refurbished tools, large carpenters, auto mechanics, builders and shoe makers; ready to be sent to support our partners SIDO, Small Industrial Development Organisations in Tanzania. The total weight of the pallets was over half a ton. This month we also sent sewing machines and over 800 unrefurbished tools to Workaid. Along with the other sixty groups throughout the UK we need money to support the costs of the container to pay for our shipment. Accordingly we set up our stall at the Bridgend County Show, a weekend of interesting weather sun and rain, sharing the marquee with allotment enthusiasts. Since the last article we have completed all necessary PAT Tests and prepared tools for sale, which are not required in the kits. We are always busy, but in closing we must remind the reader that new members are always welcome. Mark T. James (Chairman)

Gorwelion, the building and campsite owned by the Girl Guide Association, is supported by donations from various organisations. The building itself has recently been refurbished. In June members of the Inner Wheel and other supporting organisations were invited to see the improvements. We were entertained to tea by members of the Guide Movement. The facilities have been improved and modernised. We are fortunate to have such an important site where Girl Guides from all over the world can come and visit Porthcawl. The Rotary President’s Night, held in the Atlantic Hotel recently, was attended by several Inner Wheel members. The Porthcawl Inner Wheel Handover Tea was held in the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club recently. President Gill presented the chain of office to our new President, Mary Emment-Lewis. The District Handover was held in Ty Newydd, Hirwaun. Six members of the Porthcawl Inner Wheel Club attended. Members of the District Committee were introduced including Mary Emment-Lewis who has been re-elected as Editor of the Spokeswoman. Life With Porthcawl Lions The beginning of July saw the beginning of a new Lion year and a new president for Porthcawl Lions. At a celebratory Sunday lunch at the Hi-Tide, last year’s very popular president, Gloria, handed over the chain of office and charter to this year’s president, Lion Rhys. Rhys congratulated Gloria on her successful year and thanked her for all her hard work before installing charter Lion Don as this year’s vice-president. Lion Gloria’s last job, before her well-deserved rest in the sun, was a coffee morning for the Bob Cook Games. Attendance was disappointing but the event managed to raise around £150 towards the coach to transport the disabled competitors. The next big event for the club is the vintage fair and classic car show at Porthcawl Rugby club on Saturday 1st August. There are due to be over 140 classic cars to view and perhaps take you for a trip down memory lane as well as stalls, games and entertainment. So, if you see this in time, do come along and enjoy a happy family day. Meanwhile the Sunday morning car boot sales at Porthcawl Rugby Club and the book stall in John Street continue, weather permitting. John Cosson

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Sker WI News

Mynydd Cynffig WI

The July meeting of Sker WI was held recently and president Nora Williams welcomed the members present. The trip to Swansea was enjoyed by all, and the weather couldn’t have been better for the boat trip on the river Tawe. The meal afterwards at Blanco’s finished the day off nicely. The Charity evening in aid of the Stroke Club went well and members enjoyed some curling, with £300 being raised. The speaker for the evening was Mr Alan Badmington whose talk ‘Lost for Words’ told us how he overcame his stuttering. For over 50 years he experienced extreme difficulty in telling people who he was - he had been stuttering since he was about 3. Over the years he had speech therapy without much success. At 19 he joined the Police Service until retiring in 1993. It is only in recent years that he has gained the help and understanding to overcome the problem. The next meeting in on Thursday 10th September at 7pm in St David’s Church Hall when Mike Boyles will tell us about The Life and Times of Ivor Novello. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Mynydd Cynffig WI held their monthly meeting in the Talbot Centre, Kenfig Hill. Weather was dry with a good turnout of members. The meeting was chaired and minutes read by Enid our secretary. WI events and notices were brought to the attention of the members, including the forthcoming show in Cornelly. Eirwen, our treasurer, gave us a short report of the AGM celebrating 100 years of the WI in the Royal Albert Hall, London. We discussed our annual trip to Hereford in August. Final details put to bed, so no meeting in August, but we will be ready and raring to go on the 8th of September. With WI business over we listened to Mr John Pearman - his topic ‘Patagonia’. We learned things about this part of the world we had not known and enjoyed his talk immensely. September s talk will be by Helen Jones, topic: ‘My time in the Met.’ Which should be entertaining . The year is going fast, and we will soon be thinking of Christmas and all that involves with the WI. Newton WI Our July meeting was opened by our President - Pearl Mason (good to see her back after her short illness). All business discussed, Pearl welcomed our guest speaker Mrs Nora Clarke together with the special guest ‘Unwyn’ the lovely German Shepherd puppy, who of course stole the show. Mr & Mrs Clarke are known as ‘Puppy Walkers’ the first stage of training in the life of a Guide Dog for the blind. There are various stages in the dogs training before they can qualify as a working ‘Guide Dog’. These wonderful animals can make such a difference to peoples lives, giving them confidence and independence. Shirley Brown was our representative at the Centenary Annual Meeting held at the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of HM the Queen, the Princess Royal and Sophie Countess of Wessex. Shirley gave a full and very interesting account of the proceedings. Our Summer Tea was held on 24th June, when all the members enjoyed a splendid spread including delicious strawberries and cream. Coychurch WI President Sandra Davidson welcomed everyone present, including new member Marion Lewis and guest Dulcie Davies representing Pencoed WI who presented a report on the recent NFWI AGM held in the Royal Albert Hall, London. The annual summer trip is on 18th August to Gloucester with an optional river boat cruise to include afternoon tea was confirmed. Members were reminded that there is no meeting in August. The speaker Mr Allan Underhill gave an informative historical talk ‘Allsorts’ with facts about the development of confectionery from the Greeks to the Tudors. He stated the following: that the sugarcane produced in India was used as currency, the soldiers in the American Civil War were paid in chocolate, Easter eggs were first introduced in Europe in the 19th century and that tax on sugar was introduced in 1815 generating millions of pounds. The meeting concluded with tea/coffee and biscuits. Guests and new members are welcome to come along to our next meeting on 1st September at 7.30pm in the Williams Memorial Hall. Finance Portfolio Diversification Whether you’re planning to start investing your money or if you’re already a seasoned investor, it’s crucial to make sure that you manage the risks you are exposed to in order to avoid suffering losses to your capital. The key is to build a diverse portfolio with a mix of different investments that matches your attitude to risk. A balanced investment portfolio will contain a mix of equities (shares in companies), government and corporate bonds (loans to governments or companies), property, and cash. Assets moving independently: The theory behind this approach is that the values of different assets can move independently and often for different reasons. Shares move in line with the fortunes and prospects of companies. Bonds are influenced by interest rates and are more closely connected to the performance of the domestic economy. Different investment sectors: Not all sectors are correlated. For example, if the banking sector suffers a downturn, this will not necessarily have an impact on the precious metals sector. So by investing in both, your portfolio will be less likely to suffer losses than an investor sticking to single sector. The more sectors that you invest in, the less volatile the portfolio becomes. Stock market movements: Investing in different regions and countries can also reduce the impact of stock market movements. Greece’s Debt Crisis Increased uncertainty and unpredictable Greek politics created renewed fears about a possible ‘Grexit’ and also called into question the stability of the Eurozone Project. In terms of market reaction to June’s news flow, the anticipated panic selling of risk assets did not materialise and whilst we have encountered higher volatility, we haven’t seen the significant drawdowns in risk assets that many had feared. The missed IMF debt repayments and shock announcement of a referendum on acceptance of a revised bailout certainly tested market and political patience. In our opinion the reason behind June’s somewhat muted price action was partly down to the comforting stance of the ECB. The ECB continues to provide market liquidity in the form of Quantitative Easing but has also stated its aggressive stance to maintain credibility and stability within the Eurozone. To date the impact on our client portfolios has been relatively muted and with performance in excess of our benchmark. Bird Watch: Goldfinch

Laleston Gardening Club

The Goldfinch is an exotic looking finch with a distinctive red, white and black head pattern. Look very closely and you may be able to separate the sexes – the red on the male’s face extends slightly behind the eye. Keep an eye out for youngsters that have recently left the nest – they are streakier and lack the red face of adults, but still have characteristic gold wing bars. Goldfinches forage in flocks (the collective noun is a ‘charm’), so there’s a good chance of you seeing more than one. A Goldfinch’s bill is thin and narrow compared with other finches, allowing them to extract seeds from hard-to-reach spaces. Nyger seed and sunflower hearts are favourite foods. Dandelion seeds are also popular - the perfect excuse for not keeping your garden too tidy! Last year we had a problem with one of our plants. Blossom end rot is caused by a lack of calcium, and for calcium to reach parts of the plant furthest from the roots there has to be a good flow of water through the plant. Not much you can do to save fruits once they have blossom end rot, but, you can prevent other fruits being affected. Soil or potting compost should be kept consistently moist during the growing season and must never be allowed to dry out. We are busy making plans for our annual show, to be held on Saturday 5th September. Make a note in your diary. In the meanwhile remember to save seeds from favourites like Lupins, Delphiniums, Sweet peas, Poppies and a firm favourite the Marigold. Peas, French beans and runners, onions, potatoes should all be ready now, even spinach, you might not be very popular with the kids but think how healthy they will be! When harvesting potatoes make sure you find them all (even the tiny ones) otherwise next year you will have uninvited guests in amongst the veg you’ve planted where the spuds have been rotated from (believe me I know!) Oh boy- do the slugs love a damp summer! The lusher and greener it is the more they love it! Try putting down bits of slate or wood in the borders for the slugs to creep under, then you can turn them over exposing the slugs for any birds in the vicinity (or chuck them over the field if you can bear to pick them up). When weeding borders watch out for any self- sown seedlings, many hybrids will not reproduce true from seed, but the seedlings that do grow can throw up many variations in flower and leaf colour, you never know you might discover a winner! Living together as a couple (also called cohabiting) does not give you the same rights and responsibilities as being married or in a registered civil partnership. Cohabitation does not automatically give you rights to the home you share. 1. If the property is rented, only the tenant(s) named in the rental agreement has the ‘right’ to live there, and has responsibility for paying the rent. 2. If the property is owned by one of you, only the property owner is entitled to live there, anyone else can be asked to leave. The owner can also make decisions about selling/ remortgaging the property. However, even where only one of you owns the property, the other may have some rights (eg: to a share of the money if the property is sold). This can happen if: 1. The owner has agreed in writing that the non-owner is entitled to a share of the home 2. The non-owner contributes financially (eg: paying part of the mortgage) or has acted to their own detriment (eg: giving up a job) on the understanding that this entitles him or her to a share To help protect the cohabitation rights of both partners, the parties should consider purchasing the property in joint names, but there are potential pitfalls. For example: 1. You cannot force your partner to sell the home if you decide to leave, unless you apply for a court order 2. Even if you contributed most of the costs of buying the home, you would normally only be entitled to a half share unless you have agreed otherwise 3. If your partner walks out on you, you are likely to be liable for the full amount of any mortgage payments. In general, unlike married couples or those in a civil partnership, ownership is unaffected by the fact that you live together as a couple. So: 1. If you already owned something before you started to live together, it continues to be your sole property 2. If you buy something together, you own it in the shares that you each contributed to the purchase price unless agreed otherwise 3. If your partner gave something to you as a gift, you own it. Upon death, an unmarried cohabitant has no automatic right to inherit if their partner dies, although they may be a beneficiary under the other’s will. If you have lived together ‘as man and wife’ for at least two years or if you can show that you were financially dependent on your partner, you can make a claim for a financial settlement even if you were not a beneficiary of the will. If you owned your home together, the form of legal ownership has a major impact. To help you we would suggest: 1. Drawing up a cohabitation agreement, so you have clear arrangements covering ownership of the home and what rights each of you have to live there 2. Appointing each other to hold a lasting power of attorney (so that if one of you is no longer capable, the other can take decisions on his or her behalf) 3. As Downwood Film Productions sets itself the task of making a new town history film, I have spent much of the last few weeks in Penarth, as reported in the June issue of Seaside News, and fortunately most of the filming days have been in fine weather. The townspeople are quite used to seeing TV cameras in their midst, as Cardiff and district has become an important centre for programme production, but I have had a lot of inquiries about shooting on 16mm film, my preferred choice. Apart from unravelling the town’s past, I believe it is equally important to show something of the present, and in late June I filmed the Penarth Yacht Club’s Regatta on a particularly fine Saturday. The club kindly allowed me on board their rescue craft so I was able to get out into the channel to show the participants leaving the shore. Viewers often forget that the camera has to go everywhere, often to difficult or dangerous places such as hanging out of helicopters or dangling off mountainsides, and somebody has to be behind it to operate it – unless it is attached to a drone. As winner of the WAMC award she was selected to be one of the guest singers at the WAMC bi-annual concert at the Royal Albert Hall. A Legend Comes to Town! Justin Hayward certainly didn’t let his fans down when he appeared at the Grand Pavilion in a fantastic sellout concert. The legendary Moody Blues singer, who’s more used to performing in stadiums and giant arenas all over the world, was on top form in an acoustic setting! Accompanied by a guitarist and keyboard player, he featured new songs from his great new solo album ‘Spirits of the Western World’. All the Moodies favourites were played, of course, including ‘Tuesday Afternoon’, ‘Question’ and ‘Nights in White Satin’, as well as his solo hits ‘Blue Guitar’ and ‘Forever Autumn’, all followed by a standing ovation. He did an encore with ‘I Know You’re Out There Somewhere’, with the fans wanting more! I wasn’t dressed in white satin, but what a magical night! Well, Saturday 29th August is the Newton Pop and Beer Festival, with top local bands Last Chance Heroes, Side Effects, Tex and the Mushrooms, Greasy Rats and more. My lovely minders didn’t break any limbs or get arrested at their recent joint birthday, so they’ll be with me on the day. Big Night Out Not many choirs have the courage to tackle such a big, challenging work as Dvorak’s Requiem, but Cor Bro Ogwr did just that at their summer concert at All Saints Church, Porthcawl. Conductor Nick Bromilow’s enthusiasm for the piece carried along choristers as they rehearsed each week, to put on a concert described by an audience member as ‘spine chilling’. A 28-piece orchestra, led by Caroline Green, and soloists from The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, added to the drama. Lara-Clare Bourdeaux, Olivia Gomez, Conal Bembridge-Sayers and Ben Tomlin sang their hearts out and the three elements, choir, orchestra and soloists, blended beautifully together under the conductor’s baton. We were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Porthcawl, David Newton Williams, himself a singer, and both Town and Borough Mayors of Bridgend. Canon Masson kindly provided the interval bar. Sport Rest Bay Lifeguard Club - Nippers

On the 27th June the nippers at Rest Bay Lifeguard Club took part in the Llantwit Major Carnival held at Barry Beach. It was a fantastic day with the sun shinning. The nippers yet again did all the parents and coaches proud with their performance on the day on both land and sea events, with lots of medals and points won by everyone, which resulted in the Rest Bay Nippers winning the carnival! Amazing result, by amazing kids. A massive well done to all that took part. We are now looking forward to taking part in the Welsh championships in July. TUSKA Sprint Triathlon Returns To Porthcawl For The 13th Time

Hundreds of multi-athletes will be returning to Porthcawl on the morning of Sunday 16th August to compete in the 13th Tuska Sprint Triathlon. The one-wave race, organised by Pencoed Tri Club, will start around 7.30am in the sea just off the slipway in the Porthcawl harbour. Competitors will swim 750m in the sea, cycle 22km in and around Porthcawl and will finish on the pier after running 5km along the Porthcawl seafront. The 2014 edition was won by Carol Bridge in 1h 06m 02s - the first time a female triathlete reached number one in the overall competition. the race for free to watch the exciting competition unfold along the whole course with start, transitions, and finish at Porthcawl Harbour. The audience will also be able to celebrate the successes of the newly crowned 2015 Welsh Champions as the Tuska race also hosts the Welsh Sprint Triathlon Championships. The competition is open to men, women and relay teams (minimum age 17), with entries being accepted until Fri August 14th unless places have run out. Porthcawl Lifeguards – Junior News It’s been a busy month at Porthcawl Lifeguard Club. We started off with our nippers paying a visit to Barry Island for the Llantwit Major Nipper Carnival -where our small team performed well and had a great day out on the beach on a gloriously sunny day. Our juniors also had an event to compete at as we organised our own junior carnival down on Coney beach. This was a very busy day for the club and we’d like to thank all the members who pitched in to help out and made it a great success. We were lucky to have a sunny day and some great events - thanks to a good attendance by the other clubs. Porthcawl put in some excellent performances but were narrowly beaten in to third place by Rhoose and overall winners Penybont. Congratulations to everyone who took part and we hope it was an enjoyable day for everyone. Southerndown & Ogmore by Sea Surf Report It has been a poor summer season so far with only small waves now and then this month. Shingle is moving around at Ogmore as well and the banks don’t seem to jack up a wave the same. Perhaps the hordes of paddleboards will drift off elsewhere over time unless the shingle improves. I enjoyed making a film for The 3 Golden Cups pub at Southerndown a few weeks ago. In the film there is some local surf action at Ogmore by Sea where Martin Dan of the Blims can be seen dropping into an overhead wave as he sings the same Lyrics. Also, Owen Alexander blaffs off a golden lip in the golden setting sunshine at the bay - to the hoot of the vocals of the song. Rugby World Cup Fever Hits Porthcawl Primary Schools

Pupils from three primary schools in Porthcawl kicked off their Rugby World Cup preparation with a Whitsun World Cup Rugby Festival organised by the Parish of Newton, Nottage, Porthcawl. Newton Primary, Nottage Primary and West Park Primary each fielded two teams of Year 4 pupils for a tag rugby tournament at Porthcawl Rugby Club.

Pyle NPT started their annual summer football tournament by firstly playing Cefn Cribwr Primary. PCSO Maiden said “It was a close game in which the children were fanatically behaved and showed great team working skills. They were a credit to their school. Mr Vaughan one of the teachers at the school even joined in on the police team and seemed to have great fun!”

The festival was the brainchild of Father Craig Vaughan of the Parish of Newton, Nottage, Porthcawl and was supported by David McNally of Sports Xtra and Porthcawl Rugby Club. Each of the schools was allocated two countries and pupils looked at the culture, traditions, religions, geography and sports of each country, as well as found out about that country’s rugby-playing history. The event took place at Porthcawl Rugby Club and pupils from Porthcawl Comprehensive School refereed the games as part of their sports studies. There were also guest appearances from some of the greats in the world of rugby including Sir Gareth Edwards, Tommy “Tom the Bomb” David, Steve Fenwick, Clive Williams and Ryan Bevington. Father Craig said, “It was an inspiring day and each of the schools won a signed 2015 World Cup Rugby ball. The festival helped to further links between the parish, the schools and local community. Pyle NPT continued their Annual Football Tournament with a trip to Afon Y Felin Primary School in North Cornelly. A tough game in the scorching heat, which finished in a draw - 6 all! The children showed excellent spirit to score two goals in the final few minutes.

Tap It Out June was a busy month in the sportive calendar for the club. A large number of members took put in the dragon ride doing both the 100 mile and 150 mile distances over some tough terrain. Then it was onto the first ever Cardiff Velothon and a chance for the members to experience a closed road ride for the first time. It was a well organised event and a superb feeling to use the whole road and not stopping at lights and roundabouts. This resulted in some terrific riding with some quick times posted. Something for everyone to put in their social calendar in September is the Welsh Crit Race. On Sunday 20th September 2015, Dai Lloyd will be hosting the Porthcawl Seafront Criterium. There will be a full afternoon and evening of racing, catering for all levels (Under 8’s through to elite riders). Races will be on closed roads on Porthcawl seafront. It will be a challenging circuit with numerous sharp bends for a spectacular race. Club rides are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. It was great that year 4, 5 and 6 pupils came out onto the field to support both teams and added to the atmosphere.
