LETTERS GEOFF DAVIES TRIBUTE
Geoff Davies was born in London in 1944 where he studied art in the prestigious London Royal College of Art in the 1960s. His surfing career started when he was inspired by The Beach Boys music and a surfing way of life. So he drove down to Cornwall from London to meet Bill Head and Bob Baily (Bilbo surfboards) in the mid 60s whereby he collected and surfed his first board (with no wax!) and after a few months became a passionate and competent surfer. He spent his summers in Wales at Freshwater West living in a campervan for most of the summer, and moved to Porthcawl in South Wales with his wife Janet Davies in 1975 whilst teaching Foundation fine art and graphic design in Cardiff University. Geoff helped run the Welsh Coast Surf Club (WCSC) starting in 1974/75 as secretary, and also instigated and helped set up ‘Line-up’ surf magazine in the mid 70s - using staple guns and Xerox machines at the back of an old workshop that later become a surf T-shirt and sticker printing business, whilst working with Quicksilver and Billabong in the early years, supporting and printing for local surf shops, lifeguard and surf clubs. Geoff judged and competed in local and national competitions, was placed 4th in the Welsh Masters, and was well known for encouraging many up and coming youngsters at the time such as Mark Schofield, Brad Hockridge, Simon Tucker and many others to enter competitions and push themselves to the best of their abilities. Geoff painted and sprayed many surfboards in the 70s and 80s for Roger Cooper in Wales, in Llantwit and Cornwall for local shapers, and airbrushed artwork on many boards including the now controversial ‘naked ladies’ collection! Geoff worked with Ted Dearhurst and designed for him a lions head with British flag for Teds entry into the British team. He taught his son Tris Davies to surf from an early age; Tris now carries that love for the ocean, surfing all year round with real passion and commitment and in memory of Geoff. Geoff was a passionate, thoughtful, intelligent, artistic and kind man and will forever be fondly remembered and greatly honoured by the surfing community. 8 | seaside news
STEELWORKS SANTA WINS HERO AWARD Dear Editor, A man from Porthcawl has won a prestigious Dementia Hero Award in Alzheimer’s Society category for Fundraising. Steelworks Santa, aka Allan Evans, was one of three finalists in the Dementia Hero Award for Fundraising category. This award recognised those organising, taking part in fundraising events or raising money in their community for Alzheimer’s Society throughout the 2020 Covid 19 pandemic. Allan managed to bring magic, joy and hope to so many people across South Wales during the 2020 festive period. He, and his family, held a number of Covid-safe fundraising events allowing children across the wider area the chance to still see ‘the real Santa’ in what was a dark and bleak time for many. Allan raised more than £10,000 for Alzheimer’s Society. Allan said: “Christmas in 2020 was a Festive Season like no other. All our normal activities like Grotto, Home Visits, Christmas Parties etc. could not go ahead due to Covid social distancing rules. As well as going virtual, Steelworks Santa held Covid safe Santa Experiences in Pyle Garden Centre. A lot of parents and grandparents thanked us on the way out – they wanted normality at Christmas time. It made it a special

The Reading Agency and Awen Libraries are excited to introduce Wild World Heroes, Summer Reading Challenge 2021: a celebration of nature and action for the environment, in partnership with WWF UK. Aimed at children aged 4-11, the challenge aims to support children’s reading for pleasure and prevent a dip in reading over the six-week break. As well as supporting literacy, reading is a fantastic way to promote mental wellbeing and have fun. We recommend reading six books, however, we are happy for you to set your own target as long as it encourages the children to read consistently for six weeks or more! How to register You can register for the Summer Reading Challenge at Porthcawl library. Your child will receive a free pack that includes a map of the fictional town of Wilderville. The aim of the game is to read a book, collect a sticker to put on the map (some are scratch and sniff!) and solve the clues! Children who successfully complete the challenge will be presented with a certificate and medal. Registration doesn’t close until the summer does, so pop in at any time to sign up! Joining the library is free! You can either visit us and a friendly member of staff will be able to join you and your family straight away (you will need to bring proof of address such as a utility bill), or you can join the library on our website. COST OF CANCER We finally have some news. We are now registered on the Thrift+ platform. Thrift is where you register then you request a bag from them and send them good quality clothes. They will examine the clothes and then they will take photos of them, and you decide whether you want to donate 33% or 66% of the sale to charity. I think it is pretty genius really. For anyone interested in doing the walk in August. You are more than welcome to take part in the walk. We are not doing it as an official event this year so please feel free to do it under your own steam. You can even do the 18 miles over the month of August again. NEWS IPADS FOR CARERS At the start of the pandemic, a plan was hatched by local services to support unpaid carers to stay connected through the use of iPads. Getting the iPads out to those who would benefit the most from the technology has not always been easy. “There’s been some reluctance,” says Harriet Hopkins, Library Manager for Awen Libraries in Bridgend borough. “For some, an iPad is an alien technology that’s only going to cause them trouble, but in reality, once you get past the fear of breaking it, technology opens up a whole world of entertainment and support that is really exciting!” Harriet and her colleagues have seen this first-hand over their years delivering Digital Skills sessions. “It’s a joyful experience, helping someone email a photo to their grandkids who live in another country or county, or teaching them how to play card games that they haven’t played for years because of arthritis in their hands. PLANS FOR NEW COLLEGE WILL BENEFIT EVERYONE Ambitious new plans that could result in Bridgend College moving into the heart of Bridgend town centre are making progress. Early discussions have already taken place between Bridgend County Borough Council, South Wales Police and Bridgend College, and Welsh Government’s capital panel has agreed a funding bid for acquiring and demolishing Bridgend police station. With plans in place to move police activities to alternative town centre premises, relocating Bridgend College’s learning and skills campus into all-new, purpose built facility will act as an anchor project within the wider Bridgend town centre masterplan. This has the potential to make the county borough a focal point for training and education throughout the region. The planned new campus could take advantage of enhanced public transport links within the town to make it easier for people to access its facilities. In turn, the campus would support local businesses by

significantly increasing footfall throughout the town centre. While the plans are still at a very early stage, acquiring the police station site is the first step towards delivering what could prove to be a major boost not just for Bridgend town, but for all of the county borough – look out for more news soon. Work on the all-new community recycling centre at Village Farm Industrial Estate in Pyle is now in the final phase. Featuring a split-level design, drivers will be able to choose whether they want to access parking bays and recycling skips at ground level, or to use bypass lanes and ramps leading to highsided skips on an upper deck. With facilities such as an all-weather canopy, flexible bollards to prevent accidental damage, on-site solar powered lighting and flat kerb-free parking bays to remove potential trip hazards, the new location will accommodate up to 24 vehicles at a time and enable 72 more cars to queue on site. To ease congestion and support the flow of traffic around the industrial estate, work is also being carried out to install a dedicated turning lane from the A48 onto Heol Mostyn, new traffic lights and a safe crossing island. The junction will also be resurfaced in preparation for the opening of the site. This represents a £2.3m investment into Village Farm Industrial Estate as well as the creation of an all-new facility that will help thousands of households to recycle even more of their waste, and I am looking forward to seeing it open soon. THE ‘SUMMER OF FUN’ IS UNDERWAY Children and young people can enjoy a wide range of free activities as part of this year’s Summer of Fun programme. Children aged eight to 11 are enjoying sports, games and creative arts as part of the Active 4 Life scheme, while the Urdd is providing bilingual sports camps to give three to 11 year olds a chance to try team sports and games based around rugby, football, netball and more. Young ambassador volunteers are providing a ‘21 things to do in summer 2021’ programme featuring lots of fun activities ranging from stargazing to making a den, and at local libraries, children can take part in the nature-themed ‘Wild World Heroes’ summer reading challenge. SAY NO TO THE PROPOSED TOURISM LEVY As Shadow Tourism Minister, I fear that Porthcawl’s tourism businesses will be dealt a devastating blow if the Welsh Labour Government persists with plans to introduce a tourism levy. After the terrible year this sector has suffered, it is beyond parody that the Welsh Government is seeking to introduce a tax on holidaying in Wales. It is the very last thing that our caravan parks, hotels and guest houses need as we emerge from one of the most difficult periods in recent history. Imposing a levy to be paid by visitors will drive many of them straight into the arms of our rivals in Cornwall, Devon and other seaside areas. I urge Welsh Government to reconsider this hasty and illthought out plan. I want to work with tourism businesses throughout the area to promote our wonderful natural assets and see what more can be done to support a tourism sector which has had enough to contend with over the past 18 months as it fights to survive. This tax would be a huge body blow for the sector and instead of introducing a tourism tax; Welsh Government needs to do a better job itself of promoting Welsh tourism.

NEWS SALT LAKE PLAN COULD DAMAGE PORTHCAWL’S TOURIST TRADE I have held meetings with constituents to discuss proposed changes to the LDP. My observations made to BCBC have reflected their concerns. But one aspect of the plan raised by Porthcawl businesses involves the proposed use of Salt Lake. It has been known for years that the council intends to build houses or apartments on this site. But what is now apparent is that they intend to leave no car parking on there at all. Where will the day trippers park? The council is talking about a park and ride in either Pyle or Cornelly. Most people arrive by car and they will not want to park miles away and carry all their towels, picnic baskets and other items onto a shuttle bus and then reverse the process to get home. People need to get to their cars and leave when they are ready, Queuing for a shuttle bus with a fractious toddler will not cut it. People will simply go elsewhere. Porthcawl is a major seaside resort. Taking all the parking away will badly affect the fair and the many other tourism businesses in the town. Hundreds of jobs are at stake. Email: info@seasidenews.co.uk KENFIG NATURE RESERVE OPEN DAY Just a few miles along the coast from Porthcawl lies one of the area’s most precious gems – a real jewel in BCBC’s crown. The Kenfig Nature Reserve covers part of the extensive dune system stretching from the foreshore at Sker across to the tiny hamlet of Ton Kenfig. This nature reserve was set up by the Kenfig Corporation Trust in 1971 to protect this valuable habitat, which is home to some rare species. It was run by BCBC for many years but was handed back to the Trust in 2019. A new management structure is now in place with two of the Corporation directors heading a new charity, which will manage the reserve. I was delighted to attend their first open day when local people and supporters were able to tour the centre as well as enjoying the great outdoors by following one of the many walks which lead down to the beach. We were also told about their plans to increase income by setting up a café, and community hub. I was very impressed by the natural beauty of the area but also by the plans that this team has. NEWS FROM THE PORTHCAWL MAYOR Porthcawl Town Council received a presentation from the Aldi Management Team leading on the new foodstore on Salt Lake. Very impressed with the bespoke design. Finally! Porthcawl Town Councillors have had an opportunity to meet with BCBC senior officers taking forward the Salt Lake and Sandy Bay schemes. The meeting was productive and offered Porthcawl members the opportunity to share some concerns and aspirations of Porthcawl residents. I am reluctant to use the word ‘Porthcawl regeneration’ preferring to describe it as ‘Porthcawl urbanisation’ mainly because of the sheer scale of housing proposed particularly for Sandy Bay and the lack of any meaningful leisure provision. It was encouraging to hear that the ‘housing’ on Salt Lake and also Sandy Bay will have a meaningful percentage of social and affordable accommodation which will be a low-density scheme not driven by maximising the number of units. There is real concern about a lack of green spaces, leisure & tourism provision in the plans and here I am asking you Porthcawl residents young and not so young to help by urgently emailing the Town Council with ideas on what sort of leisure provision you would like to see in Sandy Bay and Salt Lake to ‘regenerate’ the social and economic wellbeing of Porthcawl. WORKING HARD FOR BRIDGEND AND PORTHCAWL It’s been another busy month as your Member of the Senedd for Bridgend and Porthcawl. I have been prioritising asking our Health Minister about support for people with Long COVID, as well as how to tackle NHS waiting lists. In our community, I have had the pleasure of visiting our schools, Bridgend College, Bridgend Carers Centre and lots of local businesses. This year marked the NHS’ 73rd birthday. In honour of NHS and care worker staff for their hard word, Queen Elizabeth II awarded the NHS the George Cross. It was wonderful to visit our Princess of Wales Hospital recently to speak with all the NHS staff and thank them personally for all they’ve done for us. As you know, I always want to show off our local, independent, creative, business owners. From Paintings by Kimbers, to my stunning plant pot from Crock-Â-Shwt, to my fabulous Cariad cushion from Cwtch Creations – I’m so proud of our local businesses. Finally, I will be working alongside local businesses and residents to continue to raise concerns with BCBC regarding Aldi at Salt Lake and I’m pleased that no further regeneration plans for Porthcawl will be approved without a thorough public consultation first. ST. CLARE’S SCHOOL What an unusual school year it has been! Despite all the pandemic challenges, our community has really pulled together. We recently held PPS Fest to celebrate how wonderful our children have been this year. We wouldn’t have been able to pull it off without the support of our parents, carers and the local community who gave their time freely. The morning events included dance sessions from Emma Louise School of Dance, Bongo lessons from Bridgend Music Service, fairground rides and turns on a donated bouncy castle. Parents had organised a fire engine demonstration, mounted police talk, army assault course, helicopter fly over, and a sound system as well as personalised wristbands for everyone. Taking centre ‘stage’ in the afternoon were Bridgend College Funk Band, The Performance House, Bridgend Music Service and Seren Arabi belly dancers. The sun shone and we all had a brilliant time dancing and relaxing together. There couldn’t have been a better way to end the day than with a delicious ‘Vintage Whippy’ ice cream. Fortunately, we have been in a very different position to most schools. During every lockdown, every year group from Nursery to Sixth Form moved seamlessly to our Remote Learning Programme. Our pupils benefitted from a fully interactive, structured timetable with the same scheme of work, same high-quality teaching, interaction with their peers and teachers as well as assessment, marking and teacher feedback, without any interruption to their studies. HOW TIMES CHANGE Times have changed so the saying goes, Nothing ever seems to stand still, Until you get to be elderly, Then there’s lots of time to kill.
It glides rapidly across the foggy streets like a shadow on a wall. It sneaks swiftly, careful to make no sound. It climbs cautiously through windows to deliver dreams while the wind whistles and howls like a wolf. The trees sway and dance in the twinkly light. The sky mumbles with anger, the grey sky cries with torrential rain. A million loud lightning bolts split at the ground. Then BANG, BAP, BANG, the floor feels Zues’ might. A gorgeous glittery powder surrounds the room enveloping the shadowy figure in shining light, what a phenomenal sight. It backs out the window, suddenly disappearing with an enormous BANG, BAP, BANG! FEATURES DOGGY DILEMMAS AND PUPPY PROBLEMS Rocket Recall Tips • Keep your dog’s name sacred. They learn through association with something good, not through constant repetition or using a harsh voice. • Choose a cue word like ‘come’, ‘here’ or use a whistle. Add it after you call your dog and use it just before good things are going to appear. Use every time you feed your dog, give them a tasty treat or play a game with them. • Set your dog up for success. Practice using your cue word at home, in your garden and in a quiet park before expecting them to ‘listen’ at a crowded beach. • Use a long line attached to a harness for safety and management if your cue word fails. This allows you to have control over a situation where your dog can’t ‘self-reward’ by greeting an on-lead dog, continue any rough play or learn to ignore you. • Don’t use your cue word unless you can bet a weeks’ wage that your dog will come to you. PORTHCAWL VETERANS HUB In May we were pleased to announce we were finally allowed to re-open our doors. It has been great to see old faces again after a long time away and we have also welcomed lots of new members to our ranks. The 26th June was Armed Forces Day and by then restrictions had eased enough for us to hold a small celebration outdoors in Griffin Park. Members were treated to burgers, hot dogs and beautiful cakes served at their tables while they sat and chatted. All had a good time. Porthcawl Veterans meet most Saturdays between 10.00 and 12.00. We have had a temporary change of venue and are now meeting at the Griffin Park Bowls Pavilion in the centre of the park. All Veterans, serving military and families are welcome. If there are any veterans or families that may be isolated and need support or assistance, we would encourage them to contact us. We will do what we can to help. NEW PORTHCAWL ROTARY PRESIDENT
It was with joy that Porthcawl Rotary was able to meet up faceto-face for the first time in over 12 months to welcome Bobby Lewis as its new President. Bobby is a long serving member of Rotary and has held several key roles within Rotary. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions the ceremony was witnessed by a few members and limited guests. It was also a very special occasion as it was the club’s 70th Anniversary and allowed us to take the opportunity to celebrate. The anniversary cake tasted delicious and was created and donated by Carolyn Perren. Rev Teddy Kalongo gave his blessing and said grace. Andrew warmly welcomed everybody and gave his outgoing speech, thanked all who supported him as President during his term of office and commentated on how pleasant it was to actually meet up as a group to celebrate our 70th Anniversary lunch. Bobby gave his welcoming address and thanked Andrew for all his hard work, commitment and enthusiasm during these difficult times. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL During June we had 18 monitored and 7 logged incidents. These involved missing children, tidal cut-offs and kayakers and jetskiers in difficulty. We logged and monitored 148 commercial vessels, 1504 leisure, 5 military and 67 other types. It is worth noting that recently we have dealt with 5 specific incidents in relation to persons being cut off in the two coves east of the main beach at Southerndown / Dunraven Bay. The critical time for people to become cut off is around 2.5hrs before high water, dependent on tides - Springs or Neaps. Please be aware of the tide times if you are in that area and furthermore, be aware of your final time to exit the 2 coves before cut off. If you see someone in danger, ring 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Congratulations to our Deputy Station Manager, Simon Hughes, who has been awarded the RNLI Long Service Medal for over 20 years’ service with Porthcawl Lifeboat, by Mr Peter Scott, President of Porthcawl RNLI, prior to him joining Porthcawl NCI. MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Tuesday the 13th of July and we were at the Talbot Center Kenfig Hill, we meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month 2pm to 4pm. We comply with all the currant legislation regarding the Covid. But we still are able to meet each other have a good time including tea and biscuits. The meeting was chaired by Christine, Sec Enid and Treasurer Eirwen. It’s our job to help our members with anything regarding the WI and anything else that we are able to help with. We couldn’t arrange a speaker for this month but our minute Sec Katherin stepped up to the challenge with a demonstration of making a needle case. We had a lot of fun as we followed her instructions, and the ladies all went home with a smile on their faces clutching their handy work. We were pleased to introduce two new members to our WI and we hope they will continue to attend. We had our usual raffle and competition and all WI business was discussed. Our walking club has arranged a walk for August and the scrabble club will be meeting in the Life Center as soon as the restrictions allow. This applies to the lunch club as well. We are having a tea next month with cake and sandwiches something for us to enjoy. Hears hoping things get better regarding Covid and once again Mynydd Cynffig WI can open its doors to new and old members alike as in the past. Christine Callaghan
EXCITING CHANGES AT GILGAL The church was originally built in 1922 and, with its centenary fast approaching, the building project to modernise it is now well underway. We are creating a large, open flexible space for fellowship and community use with, among other things, a new central glass entrance onto Park Avenue, a large open-plan café area, a new internal balcony and two single-storey extensions to the sides housing new toilets and a well-equipped kitchen, You can find more details on our website: www.gilgal.co.uk We truly appreciate the patience of our Park Avenue neighbours and apologise to them for all the disruption the building work will cause over the next few months. But, by creating a building “fit for purpose”, with a more open, accessible and family-friendly environment and dedicated youth facilities, we hope to improve the welcome we can offer to community groups, as well as fulfil our aim “To know Jesus better and to make Him better known”. So, for now, we have left the building to the builders and, for the foreseeable future, will be meeting every Sunday at AWEL-Y-MOR Community Centre at 10.30am and 5pm. INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL
It’s been a really busy couple of months at the Reserve trying to get everything up and running and ready for visitors. You may have noticed the outside of the building has been spruced up courtesy of Chris and Nick of CMP Williams painter and decorators, they have also done a wonderful job on the interior rooms at the Centre which are now available for hire. Despite the damp weather the Open Day went well with some very positive comments being made by visitors on the day. The Greedy Pig pop-up proved to be extremely successful, and we hope to see the boys here again in the very near future. As always Emma at the Hyde Out was kept busy, providing her lovely coffee, cakes and sandwiches. We are excited to announce that the Reserve has obtained a wedding licence so ceremonies can now be carried out in the Reserve Centre. This not only offers couples the opportunity to get married in a very special setting but also to have some truly memorable photographs in a spectacular location (keep an eye out for our upcoming wedding package). Following on from this, we have a Wedding Fayre arranged for Saturday 11th September and if you are interested in booking a space, please contact on the email shown below. Chris our warden has been busily counting the very rare and endangered fen orchid, Kenfig is the only place in Britain where you can find the dune variant of the species, so it is very important that these precious plants are looked after, monitored and protected. Our volunteer induction day will be taking place on Thursday 29th July on at 10am and another at 2pm. This will involve a short Health and Safety presentation and then signing up to the Reserves Preserve, Improve, Promote Protect Policy (PIPPS). On the last day of June we were able to hold our Handover celebration in the back garden of our outgoing President Mary Emment Lewis. The sun shone and things seemed almost back to normal. We were joined by members of Porthcawl Rotary club, our Mayor Tracey Hill, our District Chairman Helen Starkey, Cannon Philip Masson and a speaker from Inclusability CIC, Joanne Manley, who spoke about Autism. After greetings were given, DC Helen presented the club with its 70th Birthday Charter. The chain of office was passed to President Gil Edwards who cut the Birthday Cake. We then had a delicious afternoon tea catered by The Travelling Teapot and a chance to catch up with friends not seen for a while. We have changed our venue for our meetings for the coming months to The Newton Institute. They will still be on the first Tuesday of the month, but in the afternoon at 2pm. This is one of the key charities that Trinity supports and fund raising events include the Trinity Bargain Store. During the service we learnt about the important work the charity supports including stories from some of the children who needed help. A variety of appropriate music was chosen which we quietly enjoyed. However we will be discussing the prospect of singing and having live music again at our July Church council meeting. We hope it won’t be too long before our church services are able to resume their usual format. We continue to hold a live Zoom service for those who prefer to join from home. Recordings via email or CD are also available. The Trinity Bargain Store operates on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. We may be open some Monday mornings in addition. All proceeds are in aid of “Action for Children” and Trinity. Activities in the church hall have started to resume with strict Covid safety guidelines. Did ‘Freedom Day’ (July 19th) bring you release? As we enter August we may be enjoying greater liberties from the protective measures of Covid19 restrictions but many other things can still hinder our lives. For some of us it is the consequences of our poor choices or an addictive obsession, for others it can be our own or others expectations for our lives. At some time in our lives most of us feel trapped in an emotional ‘lockdown’ of one kind or another. But there is hope; there is release in Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” (Luke 4:18-19). Whatever situation frustrates and limits you from enjoying life to the full, bring it to Jesus in prayer and let him deal with it, or with you, and may the rest of this year truly become a ‘year of the Lord’s favour’. July saw a very welcome well-attended first social gathering (separated tables of six at the Hi-tide) and the handover of the President’s chain (see picture attached) from outgoing Lorrie Desmond-Williams to Carole Roberts. Lorrie has obviously presided admirably over a difficult year and mastered zoom we hope she will have another go and enjoy more normal and rewarding times, as indeed we do for Carole just starting a second term. We are now planning a Sandcastle Competition on Trecco Bay (unlike previous years), spread over the four mornings Wed to Sat 4th to 7th August. Time to practise and make perfect! Competitors should have their castle (it can also be a car, boat, plane monster or any creature) ready for our photographer at about 12 noon. There will be prize-certificates each day and on the Saturday The Mayor of Porthcawl, Tracy Hill will join us to judge (by photo and live) the overall winner. Sadly with loss of venue and restrictions Car Boot Sales seem unlikely this year, but things are hopefully returning to normal and we more than ever need a new generation of lockdown survivors with new ideas to help us revive a club which has done, and still does a lot for our community. TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa
TFSR has not been idle during the problems arising from Covid. As well as re-furbishing tools for a number of kits in the workshop, more akin to an operating theatre, bearing in mind the need for self- distancing, masks, adequate hand sanitation etc. We have nine kits ready to go, Builders, Carpenters and Automechanics. All the kits going to our training partners in Africa. A Typical Kit is shown in this month’s photograph, with 91 tools in total for a Training Centre. Two of the crates also contain hand sewing machines and haberdashery kits. We are always thankful for the support we get and have recently received a number of hand sewing machines from Bridgend College for which we are very grateful. We have also sent a number of un-refurbished tools to TFSR Cymru destined for Tanzania, as well as supplying gardening tools to the Llanelli group for sale at the National Trust Property at Llandeilo. Be assured all our kits will be self- isolating when they arrive in Africa, let alone Llanelli. As you see TFSR here in Porthcawl has been busy during these problematic times and we shall continue to be so. Mark James Chairman

HISTORY WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE Pearl Witherington was the most remarkable of all the SOE agents who served in France. Her exploits were numerous. In training, the SOE regarded her as the ‘best shot’ the service had ever seen, male or female. Furthermore, she was the only woman to lead an SOE network in France. Pearl parachuted into France on 22 September 1943. Her mission was to serve the SOE and also to find her boyfriend, Henri Cornioley, an escaped prisoner of war. Pearl’s network, which expanded to over 4,000 Maquisard fighters after D-Day, was especially efficient in sabotaging railroads and telephone lines. Her group attacked the railway network 800 times in June 1944 alone. The Nazis posted ‘Wanted’ posters of Pearl with a million francs reward. Yet, posing as a cosmetics saleswoman, she evaded capture. In late August 1944, Pearl’s men moved to the Forest of Gatines near Valencay. After a battle on September 9-10, more than 19,000 Nazis surrendered. They surrendered to the advancing Americans; they were too frightened to surrender to Pearl’s men. Pearl found Henri and the couple married on 26 October 1944. After the war, Pearl worked for the World Bank. She died in the Loire Valley, aged 93. THE COFFINS OF NEWCASTLE Walter Coffin was born in Selworthy, Somerset, in 1731. His father, also called Walter, was a rich gentleman who, through unwise speculation, managed to lose his wealth. His widow moved with her younger son Walter to Bridgend, as she was the half-sister of Dr Richard Price, of Llangeinor, the philosopher. Unlike his father Walter was industrious and established a tannery on the banks of the Ogmore where the multistory car park now stands at the foot of the Rhiw. He lived, in the late 1770s, in St John’s House on Newcastle Hill. He was said to be reserved, retiring and somewhat parsimonious. His business thrived and he built up a substantial holding of land in South Wales. In 1782, at the age of 51 he married his cousin Anne Morgan, 20 years younger. She had been keeping house in London for her brother William Morgan, the actuary (whom we met in April’s Seaside News) and no they moved to a large house, now demolished, across the river at Nolton, where they had three children. He died in 1812, aged 81 and his son, also, unsurprisingly called Walter, features in our next instalment. The image is of St John’s House. PORTHCAWL CINEMAS
Cosy Corner is named after a cinema, made from an aircraft hangar, which was erected on the site by Mr George Beynon, in 1923. The Cosy Corner Cinema showed all the latest films and was also the original venue for productions by the newly formed Porthcawl Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society. By 1931 Mr George Beynon had opened two further cinemas: both in John Street. The Coliseum (Spar) was originally opened in 1910 as Dooner’s Empire & Bioscope then renamed in 1912. It was a theatre and music hall but also staged boxing matches. It was used by the Porthcawl Urban District Council who held their meetings upstairs and election results were announced from the small balcony. The width of the theatre was 30ft with a seating capacity of 600, which had reduced to 450 by the 1953. The cinema was closed by 1963. The original Casino Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1924 and reopened with a cafe and ballroom in 1927 becoming a cinema in 1930. In 1973 the cinema was discontinued, and it became the Stoneleigh Night Club, the original Stoneleigh private club was next door. The club lost its late-night licence in 1988 and burnt down in 1989. LEGAL PROTECTION FOR BEREAVED COHABITEES WHAT IS A CONSENT ORDER What should you do once you reach an agreement in respect of finances following divorce? Negotiating a financial settlement between you is always preferable to arguing things out in Court and asking a Judge to decide how to divide your finances. If you and your spouse can reach an agreement between yourselves, you should always have this made legally binding by obtaining a Consent Order, which is then approved and sealed by the Courts. The Consent order will draw all claims to an end. However, it is not always possible to agree this between yourselves and if necessary, you can instruct help from your solicitors or use the mediation process to assist. Without a Consent Order, there is always a possibility that your former spouse may try to make a claim against your assets, investments, property etc at a later date, there is no limit to how long after the divorce this can happen. You can begin negotiating a settlement as soon as you agree you intend to divorce and you can apply to the Court for a Consent Order at any stage after the Decree Nisi has been granted but it is a good idea to obtain the Consent Order before the divorce is finalised with the Decree Absolute. The Consent Order should include: • Your home - whether it will be sold and the proceeds divided or ownership transferred to one of you; • how other assets such as second properties, savings, investments, business interests and personal possession will be dealt with; • how any pension schemes will be shared; • child maintenance for any children; • who will take responsibility for any outstanding debts; Once the agreement is reached, one party usually drafts the consent order which is then approved by the other party and signed by both parties. You will both need to complete a statement of information form summarising what capital and income each of you have. This application form is sent to the Court together with the signed Consent Order and a £50 Court fee. The Judge will approve the terms of the agreement making sure it is fair for both parties and importantly meets the needs of any children of the family and the parties. The Judge may want to ask a few questions – either in writing or at a hearing. Once the judge is satisfied, the consent order is ‘sealed’ and becomes legally binding.

Cohabiting couples are the fastest growing family type in the UK. Couples who live together do not have similar legal protections. And although many unmarried couples believe that because they are in a “common law marriage” they have the same financial claims available to them as married couples, the fact is there is no such thing as a common law marriage. This means that you could be left with nothing in the event of a separation or if your partner dies. If you are married or in a civil partnership, there are laws in place to help determine how your financial assets should be divided if your relationship breaks down, and to protect you in the event of your partner’s death. However, there are measures being put into place which will even out the playing field in the event of a cohabitee’s death. Recently, the Department for Work and Pensions has announced plans to extend bereavement support to cohabiting couples with children. At present, a surviving parent can only claim the financial support if he or she was married or in a civil partnership at the time of their spouse or civil partner’s death. The government is now proposing that Widowed Parent’s Allowance and Bereavement Support Payments will be extended to surviving cohabiting partners with children who were living with their partner at the time of death. It is estimated that more than 22,000 families will now be able to claim this help, totalling an additional £320 million in support for bereaved children over the next five years. Once approved by Parliament, the changes will apply retrospectively from 30 August 2018, with any backdated payments being made as lump sums.

FINANCE TWENTY BILLION UNCLAIMED PENSION FUND MONEY The lost pension mountain as it’s being called was revealed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI). Apparently they’ve calculated that there are up to 1.6Million unclaimed pension pots worth an average value of £13,000. As people change jobs and move home so many times in their career it has become increasingly more difficult for pension providers to reunite people with their pensions. To further compound this pension holders are finding it difficult to locate their respective company’s due to mergers or closures & takeovers etc that it has become a minefield, which almost needs a forensic accountant to locate the funds. Take this example; we had a client with a £50,000 pension pot with Provident Mutual who were taken over by General Accident then the company was dissolved only to reappear with Friends Provident which is now Aviva but were previously called Norwich Union, it took months to find the money and many people would have given up looking. Fortunately the government is stepping up its help to assist with the process of reuniting people with their pensions and there is a website where you can start the process at www.gov.uk/findpension-contact-details. Alternatively you can try The Pension Tracing Service or former employers if they haven’t been taken over and absorbed into other companies and their pension schemes. When you’ve finally traced your funds you will need advice on how to access the money tax efficiently or merge with other pension pots you may have so you can manage the money more cost effectively. WE DID IT AGAIN…TWICE! 1. At the time of writing we have just placed a large mortgage case for Clients near Bridgend who had found themselves in something of a financial mess and well over-borrowed, despite excellent joint income. Although they had NO bad credit showing on their credit file at all, they had been through a difficult patch where a change of career meant that one of them had to take large cut in income to re-train for the change of job. They used their savings but then had to rely on credit cards and loans to get them through until the new job started, and a full salary restored, a good while later. Their current lender wouldn’t advance them the extra money to pay off the debts – over £80,000 – to make life easier, despite a now better joint income and prospects. Within a very short space of time we got a new deal agreed that same day, whereby they could raise the shortfall on the new property and the valuation was immediately instructed, so assuring the estate agent that this was a serious proposition. WHEN I’M 64 Over your career you may work for many different employers, and so may build a collection of different pension pots. At some point you may have to decide whether to consolidate them or leave them separate. Reasons to consider whether to combine your pensions may include: Saving money – each pension pot is managed separately, meaning each has its own annual management fees. Consolidating your pensions before retirement can be a wise move. However, there are some circumstances in which it may not always be the best option, especially without taking advice first. August is the last official month of the summer and the hottest making watering essential. Seed heads and berries rub shoulders with late summer flowers, gaps in the borders where poppies have come and gone and empty rows in the vegetable patch where armies of slugs have been munching! If your have a wildflower patch (wouldn’t it be fab to have a meadow!) now the flowers have scattered their seeds ready for a lovely show next year. Prune rambling roses, sometimes portrayed as difficult, it’s not, just remember roses will produce flowers on wood that was produced last year, all side shoots can be pruned back to one or two buds from the main stem, simples! Veggies -Yummy! Broccoli, cabbage and Brussels all do well in the autumn if you plant now from seedlings, crops to look forward to. Don’t forget to pick courgettes regularly before they turn into marrows (unless you love marrows of course!) Gladiolus is Augusts’ flower, stunning, it means sword in Latin, its represents strength integrity and infatuation and is given to pierce the recipients heart, romantic. But did you know Gladiolus was the word spelled correctly that won the 1st National spelling competition in 1925! Chris Early

PORTHCAWL LIONS’ IN BLOOM Our virtual Porthcawl in bloom competition was a great success, revealing some lovely gardens and skilled photography. There were 42 entries and our judges had a difficult task choosing the winners, as all entries were of such a high standard. First prize was awarded to Carolyn Chilcott. Second prize went to Daphne Harris and third prize to Noreen Crowder. Our Pre Christmas demonstration will be on November 3rd and on January 26th we have afternoon tea at the Grove Golf club with Terry Walton, the radio gardener as a guest speaker. Other evenings we will concentrate on making Halloween floral displays and Christmas wreaths. An exciting agenda is being planned for 2022 including visits to gardens, flower shows and festivals. We hope to welcome back new and familiar faces. We all need something bright and cheerful to look forward to. August is a month to enjoy our gardens, but there are still some jobs to do. Dead heading will prolong the flowering of bedding plants; if you have wisteria now is the time to prune. Time to pot up strawberry plants growing from runners and prune out old canes from raspberries. Harvest vegetables and collect seeds from your plants if you want some free plants next year. Keep containers well watered and ponds topped up. Laleston Gardening Club is going to hold a flower and vegetable festival on Saturday and Sunday the 4/5th September. Do come and view the displays put together by Laleston Gardening Club Members to display their best blooms and veg. We will have stalls, craft displays, and if Covid rules allow, we will have our marquee up and refreshments will be served in our gardens at Cliff Cottage, Laleston. In early July I was given permission by the Lincolnshire Heritage Aviation Centre in East Kirkby to photograph its Lancaster aircraft called ‘Just Jane’ for a scene in my Llandow Air Disaster production. The Lancaster, which played a prominent role in the RAF’s Bomber Command offensive against Germany between 1942 and 1945, was designed by Avro’s Roy Chadwick, and is undoubtedly one of the classic aircraft of all time. Chadwick’s civilian Tudor aircraft was designed in the later years of the Second World War, and used the same wings as the Lincoln bomber, which was itself derived from the Lancaster. It was a Tudor 5 airliner that crashed at Sigingstone near Llandow in 1950 with the loss of 80 lives. So it was important for my film to show the Lancaster as being the forerunner of the Tudor. At East Kirkby I photographed ‘Just Jane’ doing engine start-ups and taxiing runs, shooting the scenes in black & white to give a wartime look. I thoroughly recommend anyone with an interest in aviation to visit the museum at East Kirkby and not only look at this wonderful old aircraft but also listen to its four powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK By the time you’re reading this, we should all be out of lockdown and free again! For how long, who knows? I see Planet Rockstock, the music festival held at Trecco Bay in November, is sold out already. They have had some top bands there, including Thunder, Magnum, Uriah Heep and Dead Daisies. This year, The Darkness tops the bill. They are not one of my favourites. If they played in my garden, I’d close the curtains! However, a few groups worth seeing are Gun, Massive Wagons and my buddies Those Damn Crows, so it should be fun. Nice to see that Chartered Hurricane’s C.D., which I recently featured, is selling well. Guitarist and songwriter Mark Jones told me they’ve had orders from all over the world, including Japan, Belgium, Australia and U.S.A. for copies, so that’s great news. 44 | seaside news

REST BAY VOLUNTARY PATROLS Continuing on this summer Rest Bay Lifeguard Club are putting on voluntary lifeguard patrols at peak times outside of the RNLI service. With the recent warm weather and the continuation of travel restrictions abroad we anticipate a very busy summer after a year of uncertainty, so want to be able to provide a safe environment for all our visitors. Last year we saw our patrols assisted a large number of people out of difficulty and given others safety advice to keep them of danger. Our RWC had rescued a number of people who had got themselves into difficulty. We recommend that you always swim at a beach patrolled by lifeguards. Rest Bay, Sandy Bay (Coney), Trecco Bay, Ogmore and Whitmore Bay (Barry Island) have a lifeguard service from 10:00-18:00 every day. This is a great opportunity for our youth section to put their training, qualifications and knowledge to good use and has helped them gain further experience whilst doing a job they love. We are very proud of our club members coming together to put on extra lifeguard patrols and look forward to seeing you at Rest Bay this summer! Rest Bay Lifeguard Club

Welcome to the Youth Section. Our Youth section is between the age of 13-18. During the summer months we train at Rest Bay beach, and also at Pyle Swimming pool throughout the year. Our focus is to teach our youth how to save lives.
Why not be part of our Junior Lifesaving team? Surf lifesaving is a very diverse sport and can offer something to suit everyone! At Rest Bay we provide high quality surf lifesaving, swimming, ocean and beach training. Youth can train to become Lifeguards and can carry out voluntary patrols as part of our training programme. Some also go on to get paid jobs! Lots of youth members also like to compete in Regional, National and sometimes International competitions. These competitions can also offer amazing opportunities for our athletes.
Developing life and leadership skills in a fun and friendly environment. Our aim is to provide the lifeguards of tomorrow with training to help keep themselves and others safe whilst enjoying our wonderful beaches.
