BAKERS UNITE TO RAISE £13,000 FOR NHS STAFF

US VISIT

Dear Editor, During lockdown, a group of local bakers joined together and donated cakes and goodies to our front line staff. We then went on to produce a book, which has raised over 13k. We are really proud to be purchasing some vital equipment for Bridgend ITU and are going to have a little handover ceremony. We thought it would be an ideal piece to put in the Seaside News so that people who have bought the book can see where their money has been spent. We are hoping to do the handover in the next few weeks. Look out for a piece in the next Seaside News! Marilyn Davies, Porthcawl

When contacting advertisers, please say you saw them in the SEASIDE NEWS

Dear Editor, My sister emigrated to Wales from the US in 2013. I am fortunate to be able to visit her each summer, especially since she was diagnosed with breast cancer. One of the most beautiful villages she introduced me to is Porthcawl. It is so lovely to visit the museum, shops and stroll the boardwalk. This is one of my favourite photos of us reunited on the boardwalk in Porthcawl. Tamara Jury Bridgend, South Wales (visiting from Texas)

ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK A huge thanks to all the great bands that turned up and performed for free at the Phil Fest, in memory of our dear friend Phil Jones who passed away two years ago, but with pandemic in full swing we were unable to celebrate his life. I’m sure everyone did him proud and he was looking down saying “Well done love.” Remember if you run a jam night to let me know. “The Picton” has a good one every Tuesday and the very successful open mic night at “The Prince of Wales” is now being held on a Wednesday, not a Friday, evening. The talented and local muso, Nin Rixon, will be live at “The Seagull” pub on Saturday 13th November, so it’s another one for your notebook! Great to catch up with my old mate “Randy Andy”, the former Apollo Club D.J. Also, Daley B. Williams, my song-writing partner of over 30 years is over from the Czech Republic doing some gigs. We will be putting some songs down that I’ve written and Dale will contribute too, to claim his 50% royalties and no doubt come out with the immortal words “When we going back on tour?” There’s little chance of that, but never say never! Stag Marks 07549 728356 Picture: Stag and Daley B. Williams

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

I was recently on location at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire, to shoot a scene with an Avro 504K biplane for my Llandow Air Disaster film. A young Roy Chadwick worked on the design of this famous aircraft, and went on in later years to design the Lancaster bomber and the ill-fated Avro Tudor 5 airliner, which crashed in Sigingstone in 1950, so my purpose was to provide a visual connection in the film. The aircraft that I went to photograph is actually a replica, made twelve years ago in Argentina, and it belongs to Eric Verdon-Roe, the grandson of Alliott Verdon-Roe, the founder of Avro, who kindly gave me permission to film it. At Sywell it is looked after, and flown, by Matthew Boddington, who dressed up in flying jacket and leather helmet to do an engine start-up for me. My volunteer assistant Louise came to help, and took lots of behind-thescenes photographs, although the one accompanying this article was taken by Sascha Izumi, who was part of another aviation group at the airfield but came over to join us for the two hours we were there. It was a truly memorable day. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Louise Jones, Anthony Hontoir and Matthew Boddington (picture credit: Sascha Izumi) 16 | seaside news

POEMS THE SHOT THAT CHANGED THE WORLD It would take only one gruesome death, It would take one furious man, It would cost millions their humble breath, It would be a part of ‘a great plan’. That was the War to End All Wars, We could have had peace that lasted forever, All of that could have been yours, Instead they embarked upon a bloody endeavour. Did they know what they were embarking upon? Were those generals truly ready? Seriously, who thought they could have won? Didn’t they know that that ship was unsteady? The price that was paid echoes to this very day, The hellish screams of shells descending upon young men, The rippling machine guns slaughtered without a say, Once again, blood poured from the poet’s pen. The fields of fresh promises, Stand in ruin by their cruel commanders, They planted their false condolences, Beside the souls who now rest in Flanders. Under beautiful stars does tyranny kill, On heavenly mountains did blood stain the earth, Regret consumed their cruel will, Yet, condemnation is all these commanders are worth. Rhys Jones, North Cornelly

GRANDCHILDREN

MY GREAT GRANDSON

The Grandchildren are coming. I am as happy as can be. There is no sea in Oxford. Porthcawl is the place for to be. To see their smiling faces Brings me so much joy. I really am so lucky Having twin girls and a boy. Grandchildren are wonderful. I know that I am blessed. But when they are gone, I must admit, I am glad to have a rest! Carol Meachin, Porthcawl

I’ve been blessed With a great grandson And so my family grows

SUMMER BREEZE Sweet music murmurs through agapanthus stems, Floats across quiet gardens in wistful strains, Plays upon hot colours, crocosmias and day lillies, Unheard melodies of absent friends, Mingling with the shrieking, wheeling and diving gulls, In harmony with fleeting daydreams. The August sun dips playfully behind pale clouds, A summer haze exhales its honeyed scent upon the gentle breeze And lulls us to sleep in the arms of Friendship and Poetry Where both are blissfully at ease. MY FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH Marching, marching, marching at the army’s head It’s a general’s life for me in a coat of red In a giant tin can way beneath the sea Just like Captain Nemo that’s where I want to be Flying through the air at twice the speed of sound Piloting a jet way up above the ground All dressed in green with my band of merry men My name is Robin Hood and I’m riding through the glen In Stetson and a black mask, it’s ‘Hi ho Silver, away!’ Oh, wouldn’t it be awesome to be Lone Ranger for a day If I was a spaceman I’d take you for a drive Way out beyond the planets in Fireball XL5 Space age gadgets, speedy cars and a double O seven to kill As secret agent James Bond wouldn’t life be brill Because of all the films I’ve seen and the books I’ve read My favourite place on Earth is deep inside my head! DISCO DAWN The rain tapped some notes on my window As I greeted the day with a yawn. The wind whistled round the gazebo, A melodious start to the morn. A distant rumble of thunder Added a drumbeat or two. The odd lightening flash brought a disco It’s a treat what bad weather can do. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

CAN DIET AFFECT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH? Existing research in the field of nutritional psychiatry suggests that our diet can affect our mental and emotional health. Food we eat affects our gastrointestinal systems, which are directly tied to our brains and the ways we process emotions. Though more research is needed, early findings suggest certain diets may support mental health. These include the Mediterranean diet for depression, a nutrient-dense diet for mood, and a diet low in sugar, caffeine, and alcohol for anxiety. To follow a Mediterranean diet, increase your intake of : fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, legumes, olive oil and dairy products. Limit your intake of fried foods, processed meats, baked goods and sweetened beverages. Nutritional psychiatry is a fascinating field with potential to reshape the way we think about our mental health. There’s still much to learn, but it’s become increasingly clear that the health of our gut and the bacteria that reside in it play a significant role in mental health management and emotional regulation. Eating a nutritious diet may be one of the best ways to support gut health, while processed foods are associated with poorer outcomes and should likely be limited. If you want to make changes to your diet to support your mental health, start with a few small food swaps and build up from there. NEWS TENNIS COURTS MUST BE RETAINED I HAVE been contacted by Porthcawl Civic Trust Society about their concerns over the plans for Sandy Bay and Griffin Park. The arguments against having 900 new homes at Sandy Bay and the adjacent fairground site have already been well documented. But I want to focus on a specific proposal in BCBC’s regeneration plans and that’s what’s happening to Griffin Park. This park is pivotal to the delivery of the whole scheme as it is proposed to drive a new access road into the development through part of the park taking out both of the tennis courts and also one of the bowling greens. But the courts are used by a group of young tennis players who gather there regularly for tennis coaching. Although Griffin Park will end up bigger in the end, with extra land added in from the fairground and monster park, It is not clear if alternative tennis courts will be provided on this additional land or who would pay to provide them. I am backing the Civic Trust and the tennis club in opposing this part of the plan unless there is a clear commitment to provide alternative tennis courts before the current ones are lost. £2.4M NEW COMMUNITY FACILITIES

All-new £2.4m community facilities are on their way to Cosy Corner following the appointment of Welsh firm John Weaver Contractors Ltd to undertake the project. Workers are on site and are laying down the groundwork for an all-new stone and glass-clad building and landscaped open space that can be enjoyed by visitors and residents alike. The new building will incorporate premises suitable for five small retail units, public toilets, meeting space for community use, offices for the harbour master, changing facilities for users of the nearby marina and more. The site will also feature an outdoor children’s play area, plenty of public seating, space for staging events and an all-weather canopy capable of providing comfortable outdoor shelter from rain and the sun. Part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through Welsh Government, the all-new community facilities are expected to be ready in time for spring 2023. In addition to supporting the council’s ongoing plans for the development of the Salt Lake and waterfront areas, the plans for Cosy Corner are intended to complement other regeneration projects such as the new marina, new sea defences, the recently restored Jennings Building and improvements to the eastern breakwater - look out for more details soon. Deadline date for the September issue is: MONDAY 15TH AUGUST WORK CONTINUES ON PORTHCAWL’S NEW FOOD STORE It’s good to see how preparations for Porthcawl’s all-new foodstore at Salt Lake are nearing completion, and that contractors are being lined up for construction to begin at the two-acre site. With a ‘wave’ roof motif and a mix of wood and limestone materials, the development aims to provide a landmark gateway

Email us your views info@seasidenews.co.uk into the town while creating up to 40 full-time jobs for local people. The extensively landscaped site will incorporate walking and cycling routes to encourage links with the town centre and John Street, and a total of 114 car parking spaces will be provided. These will include five designated blue badge spaces, seven parent-and-child parking spaces, two ‘click and collect’ spaces, and four electric vehicle charging points along with provisions to add 20 more over time. All money generated from the sale of the land is being reinvested back into Porthcawl to support local infrastructure improvements and further stages of the regeneration plans. During the store’s construction, public car parking will remain available at Salt Lake and Hillsboro Place, and separate plans are also under development for creating an all-new multi storey at Hillsboro Place. If all goes well, the new Aldi store will open in summer 2023. COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

FINGERPRINTS IN SCHOOLS In 2021, the BBC reported schools in Scotland were using facial recognition technologies. After reaching out, I was made aware of schools in Bridgend using similar technologies to collect and use fingerprints from children for lunchtime meals or track attendance. Technologies used by state intelligence agencies are now being used on our children. More concerning, no risk-assessments were undertaken regarding the use of this data-collection in schools. Consent letters have framed this as safer and time-saving. However with any biometric surveillance, there is possibility of irreversible data-leaks. When somebody has a password, it is something you can change or reset – a fingerprint is something you are. Once that data is compromised, it is compromised for life. The Welsh Government has updated guidance for schools entering contracts with private companies. The guidance encourages schools to consider alternative, less-intrusive options. The guidance also recognises the importance of promoting the privacy rights of the child protected in law. I welcome this guidance; it is ultimately up to the pupil to consent to the use of their fingerprints as a replacement for money. Young people must be informed of the pros and the cons of handing over their fingerprints. SARAH MURPHY MS Member of the Senedd for Bridgend

SCHOOLS COLLEGE CONTINUES TO DELIVER EXCELLENCE, SCOOPING GLOBAL RECOGNITION

Principal and Chief Executive of Bridgend College, Simon Pirotte OBE said:

Following a full inspection by Her Majesty’s Inspector Estyn in March 2022, Bridgend College’s final report outcomes were published recently. The report highlights the strong supportive and inclusive culture for learners and staff at the college.

“I am incredibly proud of the sustained journey of success the college has been on since our previous Estyn inspection back in 2016. Achieving excellence is special, but maintaining it and improving takes commitment and dedication of incredible staff, governors and partners who create an inclusive environment for our learners to be happy, safe and successful”

The college continues to build upon its previous ‘double excellent’ Estyn inspection result, achieving a number of prestigious awards in recent times.

Responding to the publication of the college’s recent Estyn Inspection report, Sarah Murphy MS for Bridgend and Porthcawl said:

In June, the college’s Deputy Principal, Viv Buckley, was awarded ‘Outstanding Educator’ at the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics World Congress leadership summit held in Spain; international recognition of her impact and work within the post-16 education sector and at Bridgend College.

“The pandemic has caused disruption and anxiety for many learners across our community. The Estyn Inspection Report for Bridgend College highlights how the College has adapted to continue their record of excellence as an educational establishment and put the well-being of learners and staff at the heart of their educational experience.

The college’s recently published Estyn report states that ‘Senior leaders, managers and college staff demonstrate a strong commitment and take appropriate action to highlight and address the principle of sustainable development. This covers many aspects of the college’s work, including curriculum development, accommodation strategies and resource procurement practices.’ This was reaffirmed with the college winning the UK Green Gown Award for the ‘2030 Climate Action’ category, going on to be shortlisted for the International Green Gown Awards, receiving a ‘highly commended’. As the only further education college in the world to be shortlisted, the college was up against nine other finalists, all of whom were top universities from across the globe.

I am delighted to read the positive feedback from the report, namely the positive, caring and inclusive ethos, despite working in such challenging times. I would like to thank the staff for their work throughout the pandemic and as we learn to live with it. Bridgend College remains a cherished and integral part of our community. Congratulations to everyone at the College for the success of the Estyn report.” The College has ambitious plans to open a new campus in Bridgend town centre in 2025, following a £30m investment in their new STEAM Academy at their Pencoed Campus last year.

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

Many thanks and congratulations to all pupils and staff who were involved in staging Legally Blonde at the Grand Pavilion. It was a terrific success and It was so wonderful to see the school absolutely come alive during show week, with the excitement of putting on a school show after an absence of 2½ years. Thanks to those of you who took the time to write and call in to school to tell us how much you enjoyed it – we really appreciate your comments. Next year, we hope to return to our traditional January show, so watch this space for more details next term. The end of term was very busy with many of our traditional highlights returning for the first time since Covid. Sports Day, held on a beautiful day, saw Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils taking part in as many events as they wanted to, and all events were filled. Outstanding performances included Ben Foskett running the 100m in 12.6 seconds and Bethan Deeks running 200m in 27.08 seconds and jumping 4.39m in the long jump – the winning score across the year groups and both boys and girls! Congratulations to Gwynedd on winning the overall event. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher

At Newton we provide a broad and balanced curriculum; ‘Newton University’ gives pupils a range of enhanced experiences such as cooking, gardening, singer song writing, pebble art, drama, yoga and meditation to name just a few. These activities allow pupils to focus on developing a range of life skills while focusing on their wellbeing. We love to visit our community to enhance our learning and we are so lucky to have the beach and the lifeboat station as one of our resources on our doorstep. Dosbarth Sandy Bay recently visited the lifeboat station and learnt so much about sea safety

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY

Well, 2021/ 22 has been an absolute blast! We have so many happy memories of this academic year; the children, families and staff have been amazing. Local rock pooling and beach-art trips to Rest Bay, visits to the Life Boat Station, sampling ice cream at Sidoli’s and learning about coastal erosion at Kenfig Nature Reserve have certainly enhanced our learning this term. At the end of the year, Year 6 put on an outstanding performance of Cinderella Rockerfella, spent a weekend full of outdoor activities at Manor Adventure and entertained us all during Porthcawl’s Got Talent! On top of all this, they released their very own song on itunes. The children wrote ‘Our Future’ with Bethzienna from The Voice and recorded it at Bridgend College. Look out for their video on Youtube. This year’s Year 6 have been an absolute pleasure; we will miss them all and wish them every success for the future. NOTTAGE PRIMARY Nottage Primary would like to thank everyone for their memories and good wishes as we celebrated our 70th Birthday along with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 5th July. Pupils and teachers, along with past pupils, past teachers and others connected with our school joined together to recreate the walk pupils made from the old school site, currently occupied by the Co-op, to the new school, Nottage Primary, in 1952. Visitors were greeted by our choir and the school was open for refreshments provided by our PTA. They were able to reminisce of days gone by and read all the lovely memory cards. The afternoon street party for our families to come together to celebrate the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II was fantastic! Sadly, we are saying farewell to an integral part of the Nottage family at the end of this academic year, after many years of teaching and helping lead the school Mrs Helen King is taking early retirement. Mrs King has given so many children a positive and happy start to their school journey, making an impact on all those around her, not only teaching our children academically, but Mrs King has led the wellbeing in school and made a difference to our staff and families. Thank you, Mrs King!

At one time theologians thought the bible was a collection of myths and legends written hundreds of years after the events. Now archaeological digs at key sites are shedding new light on the history and reliability of the bible. At one time the general consensus was that bible stories about King David were legends, like our stories of Robin Hood and King Arthur, minor local heroes whose stories grew in the retelling. Recent finds in Jerusalem where King David’s palace was found exactly where the bible said it would be, and at Khirbet Qeiyafa including 10th century BC Hebrew writing, show that a strong Jewish central government ruled the Judean uplands during the time of David and Solomon. More recent finds on Mount Ebal at an early Iron Age altar including an ancient curse tablet are also shaking the theological world as they seem to confirm key aspects of the stories of Moses and Joshua. It seems a large part of the bible can be shown to be authentic history after all! If you would like to have a free modern language bible and some help to understand it, please contact me at gillardmc@aol.com. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl 30 | seaside news

ROTARY - KIDS OUT EVENT

On the 15th of June, the Rotary Clubs of Porthcawl and Bridgend took 87 school children from 2 schools on a day out to the Gower Heritage Centre as part of the Kids Out (UK) annual event. The buses arrived on schedule, the weather was perfect and the children were able to thoroughly enjoy their day doing oodles of hands-on events including Pottery, Kaleidoscope making, Puppeteering, Treasure hunting and lots more. The visit, as usual, ended in a duck race on the stream with all the children loudly urging their own duck to win the race. Every one of the children had a wonderful time with all of them giving Rotary a rousing cheer at the end of the visit for arranging the outing. The Rotarians who were in attendance also had a great time and we are looking forward to another excellent day next year. A big thank you to the staff at the Heritage Centre who did a marvelous job escorting the children to the various events without losing any! Meanwhile, as part of the Tri-Club event, the rotary Club of Maesteg took 48 children to the St Fagan’s Heritage Centre. No doubt they will let us know how it all went in due course.” Rotarian – Denzil Gould

PORTHCAWL NCI REPORT

We’re very pleased to say that once again we have a very full calendar of events, we held our first coach trip of the year on June 29th to the Cotswold village of Bibury, described by William Morris as ‘the most beautiful village in England’. It was a fantastic day, and everyone was glad to be out in the world once again. We’re looking forward to a Study Day and a Visit to Atlantic College in July, with a visit to the Air Museum and Cardiff Bay on September 7th. We have over 40 interest groups each month, there’s something to suit everyone, whether it be social, educational, creative, or keeping active. If you don’t know us, please give us a try by sampling up to two meetings or events, we’re a friendly bunch and we look forward to welcoming you. Jaci Russell info@porthcawlu3a.org.uk Web: porthcawlu3a.org.uk

I am writing this in the middle of the hot, sunny weather we had in July and thankfully, even though the beaches and sea have been busy, we have not had many incidents. The main activities have been Stand-up Paddleboards, Kayakers, Wind and Kite Surfers and Open Water Swimmers. There have also been a lot of yachts and other small craft going up and down the channel in front of the tower. The Watchtower is still open every day from 9am to 9pm, operated purely on a voluntary basis. Talking of volunteering, we are always looking for new recruits to join our happy band. The main criteria are enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and a general interest in the coast and sea. No prior knowledge is required as we offer a comprehensive training schedule including some classroom-based activities along with practical training in the watchtower with experienced mentors. We expect a commitment of around twenty hours per month, comprising of various watch times and we plan to start the next training in September. If you are interested in joining, please email Porthcawl@nci. org.uk or you can call up to the tower anytime during daylight hours.

FEATURES GUIDE DOG YOKO IS A REAL TEAM PLAYER!

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS

Team Wales boasts a special participant at the current Commonwealth Games – Bridgend guide dog Yoko. Her owner, lawn bowls champion Julie Thomas, is blind, and says it gives her extra reassurance to have three-year-old German shepherd retriever cross Yoko at her side. “Yoko is absolutely fantastic, a real superstar,” says Julie. “She’s so calm and reassuring and seems to have built-in radar. She has this uncanny ability to problem solve and find alternative routes around obstacles. She gives me a whole new sense of independence off the green and this makes it easier for me to play. She is also great to give a little cuddle too if you need to relax for a moment or two. I don’t know what I ever did without her. She really is amazing and she has made my life so much easier.” Julie and Yoko were chosen to appear in a film unveiling the Wales team kit. “Yoko stole the show when she put her paw up and gave me a lick,” Julie says. “She was a natural. She just takes everything in her stride. I am so proud of her.” To find out more about Guide Dogs, visit www.guidedogs.org.uk Pic shows Julie Thomas and guide dog Yok

On a scorching afternoon we still welcomed a good crowd of members to our July meeting. Our speaker was Mrs Yvonne Rees on her family history. This started with her grandmother who went to a Hiring Fair in Yorkshire to get her first job as a housemaid. She went on to tell us of her parents who followed the tradition of being in ‘service’ and became cook and butler in many wealthy houses round the country ending with a spell in America. All members of her family were made welcome by their parent’s employers. After a welcome cup of tea the business meeting continued. Names were taken of a lunch shortly and also of a Federation Garden Party at Margam Orangery in August. We do not have a meeting in August so our next meeting is on September 14th 2.0p.m. at the Grove Golf Club when Debra John will visit us again . She is always a popular speaker so do give is a tryout and visit. All welcome. Dorothy Thomas

GRACE COMMUNITY CHURCH UKRAINIAN SUPPORT GROUP Back in February 2022 we heard the terrible news that Russia had invaded Ukraine and that people were starting to flee to the safety of surrounding countries and further afield. Members of Grace Community Church, like many others in Porthcawl felt a deep desire to help these people in whatever way we could. Since then, we have set up a Ukrainian Café that meets every Wednesday evening at Grace Church where Ukrainians come together to chat, play volleyball, eat cake and sometimes even sing. It’s a lot of fun and we regularly see between 15 – 20 people here. As hosts and supporters, we meet on the first Wednesday of every month at the Church to share our experiences and generally support each other (of course there’s cake there too). Porthcawl currently has 38 Ukrainian refugees and there are more arriving every week. They have all commented that they have felt extremely welcomed by the flags, ribbons and general kindness they have all been shown. Thank you! If you want to know anything else about what Grace Ukrainian Support Group is doing or how you can help, please feel free to contact me at lizstables@hotmail.com.

Question: One of my friends has recommended that I try CBD oil to help me sleep and lessen my anxiety. Is this something you stock and recommend? Answer: CBD (short for cannabidiol) is one of 100+ naturally occurring compounds found in the hemp plant and has a unique set of beneficial properties, which makes it completely legal and safe to use, even in high doses. Typically, CBD does not contain THC which is the psychoactive compound known for it’s high-inducing effects. CBD helps the Endocannabinoid system to include the brain, lungs, immune system, vascular system and muscles. Our body creates endocannabinoids in order to pass messages that regulate and balance our natural processes. CBD is a phytocannabinoid, meaning it’s a cannabinoid derived from a plant and can affect our body in the same way as endocannabinoids. So, CBD is like taking a vitamin or mineral supplement intended to compensate diet deficiencies. By taking CBD you can optimise your endocannabinoid system – one of the most critical systems in the body for maintaining a healthy mind and body. We stock CBD in the form of drops and salve from a company named LOVE HEMP who quote “We are the UK’s leading CBD brand”. The boxer Anthony Joshua is a shareholder and ambassador for LOVE HEMP. Many of our customers tell us that the quality of their sleep is greatly improved, stress symptoms reduced and joint pain eased. Others report an improvement in their overall wellbeing. The product is popular amongst all ages and suitable for vegetarians and vegans! We currently offer a 20% discount off the recommended retail price on all our LOVE HEMP products! On top of this, don’t forget about our loyalty card scheme which gives 4 pence in the pound, points you can save and redeem on future purchases!

HISTORY WELSH FOOTBALL LEGENDS: ALF SHERWOOD The son of Herbert Sherwood, a labourer and coal miner from Wiltshire, and Alice Maud Williams, a labourer’s daughter from Aberdare, Alfred Thomas Sherwood was born on 13 November 1923 in North View Terrace, Aberaman, a stone’s throw away from his hometown football club. In 1939 Alf was an apprentice wagon painter. Then, during the Second World War, he was drafted into the coal mines to work as a ‘Bevin Boy’. In 1942, Alf joined Cardiff City from Aberaman Athletic and established himself as a reliable full-back. His senior international career began on his 23rd birthday in a match against England in the British Home Championship. The score: 3 – 0 to England. However, on 22 October 1955 in the British Home Championship match played at Ninian Park, as captain Alf led Wales to a famous 2-1 victory over England. In total, Alf won 41 Welsh caps. He earned a reputation as ‘the king of the slide-tacklers’. Indeed, Stanley Matthews described him as “the most difficult opponent he ever played against.” Students of the game reckoned that Alf’s main qualities were outstanding pace, sound tackling and a wonderful positional sense. FIRST PORTHCAWL TENNIS CLUB

Research has revealed that a Porthcawl Tennis Club had been established in 1901. “Inaugurated on Wednesday 17th July…. on land central, close to the seafront.” (Glamorgan Gazette) Its central position suggests that it may have been where the Grand Pavilion stands as there is certainly the remains of a tennis court there today. However, of the existence of a Southlands Tennis Club, there is no doubt. On 28th August 1919, a move was a foot to form a tennis club once again in Porthcawl. The committee formed to oversee the project included elected president Mr. J.P Leat who “kindly leased an excellent piece of land on South Road, adjoining his residence.” (1923 photo showing grass surround) Five courts were installed by the spring of 1920 at a cost of £500. Within their first year of existence the men’s team had gained promotion to Division Two of the Welsh InterClub Competition; yet by November 1927 the club had been dissolved. Interestingly, in 1924 the Congregational Church, New Road, was installing tennis courts and the Porthcawl Athletic Courts, Queens Avenue, would eventually be re-located; both to a new site called Griffin Park. Griffin Park tennis courts opened on 15th August 1930. The club was yet to be formed. Ceri Joseph

FINANCE ‘INFLATION TAKES FROM THE IGNORANT AND GIVES TO THE WELL INFORMED.’ Are your cash savings excessive for the purpose of accessing cash either in an emergency or for short to medium term income purposes? Are you comfortable that your cash savings have little protection against inflation? Will your cash savings enable you to meet your long-term savings goals or is there a better alternative? The ever-eroding power of inflation- The global pandemic and the war in Ukraine have both caused significant disruption to the world’s supply chains (i.e. food, energy and transport to name a few), meaning the price you to pay for most goods and services has gone up significantly. The current levels of inflation can be devastating for your hardearned savings, so when you look at what your cash savings will be worth at the end of a given period, don’t be fooled into thinking the value will still have the same purchasing power as it does today. What does this mean for £100,000 in cash savings over just three years? UP, UP, UP…WHERE WILL IT END? As the hot weather roasts Britain through the power of nature, so we’re getting roasted financially as the Bank of England continues to increase the base rate, helping to hike the cost of everyday living. The cost of fuel, utilities, food, etc., have all shot up to help inflation to a figure in excess of 9% at the time of writing costs of most everyday items against wages that struggle to keep pace. On the money front of course, mortgage rates have increased dramatically over the last month or so, with the prospect of more pain to come in the Autumn, especially for those with mortgages that are due for renewal as their current deals end or the millions of interest-only mortgages that need to have the capital repaid at the end of their term. This could leave massive numbers of people in trouble however if they or you act NOW, then we can still source you the best available deals from the whole of the market, even with lenders that don’t usually operate locally or regionally. 36 | seaside news

LEGAL IS ‘ONE LAWYER’ THE FUTURE? Often in films, the divorce lawyer cliche is all too familiar: someone who encourages their client to create conflict. But the reality is often different, and for many separating partners the aim is to have as amicable and frictionless a breakup as possible. Prompted by the advent of ‘no-fault divorce’ this year, increasingly lawyers are asked to represent both parties. Such couples want joint and neutral representation to sort out a financial settlement, arrangements for their children, and where necessary to obtain an order from the court. However, it is essential that parties need to be open and transparent, coming to the table ‘with their cards facing up’. This ensures a level playing field and no room for power imbalance. Assessments need to be done at the very beginning to ensure one party isn’t being placed under duress, and that there hasn’t been domestic abuse that would create a situation whereby one party could be intimidated or taken advantage of. Rather than two sets of lawyers pulling a couple further apart by having to make competing offers, they work with their lawyer to identify what they can agree on and work through more difficult issues. This can be more flexible than mediation, drawing on other forms of dispute resolution such as neutral evaluations and arbitration, and using specialist advisers on property valuations, tax and pensions without having to work with them in the court process. The ‘one lawyer’ solution might ultimately have a profound impact on civil justice in general. The law in England and Wales has gradually moved away from the adversarial approach and adopted one of alternative dispute resolution based on consent

and independent arbitration. If a divorcing couple can push past the emotion and stress to work together on an outcome, in theory any litigant could also. MADELINE RAND King Davies & Partners

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I have filed for Divorce against my husband on the online portal on the No fault basis but I’m thinking of preparing my Clean Break Order myself to save money. Do you recommend this? Answer: Quite simply, my answer is NO. I always advise all my clients to obtain a Clean Break Order. Your Clean Break Order will set out the terms you and husband have agreed. They are not easy documents to prepare and you must ensure that they are correct. Clean Break Orders are filed at the middle stage of the Divorce and ensure that in the future neither you nor your husband can make a claim against each other during your lifetimes and on your death. The Judge has to approve the Order and must consider it fair in all of the circumstances. They can be rejected if not completed correctly or refused if deemed unfair for one party. You do not want to get the wording wrong or omit important information which might support the approval of the Order, or leave out important clauses and face further litigation, even years later after your Divorce has been finalised. It really is not worth the risk. If terms are agreed, we are able to give

COHABITATION AGREEMENTS EXPLAINED We often hear the term ‘common law spouse’, however that is not a legal status. You are either married (or in a civil partnership) or not. If a relationship breaks down, being a ‘common law’ wife or husband does not give you the right to claim against your expartner for maintenance or a share of their assets. However, it may be possible for a parent to make a claim on behalf of a child they continue to look after. When couples are intending to co-habit then we advise them to consider preparing a cohabitation agreement. This agreement should provide financial protection for both parties to increase their sense of security and happiness within the relationship, and sadly in the event of the relationship breaking down. Financial issues are key to a cohabitation agreement. It should include: • What rights each partner has regarding property you live in, consideration will be given as to who owns the property or contributed more to its purchase price/mortgage, • Who owns other assets/ chattels/ furniture, savings, investments,

38 | seaside news

• Who will continue to own the assets in the event of separation, • Who is responsible for any debts. • How expenses will be shared while you live together. • Where you have children, either jointly or with a previous partner, the cohabitation agreement should also address this. Some aspects may also need to be supported by legal documentation: for example, to ensure that your partner inherits in the event of your death, you should prepare Wills. A cohabitation agreement is a contract between you both. To be legally enforceable, it must have been made with the intention of having legal force - the agreement can say so. Even so, a cohabitation agreement may not be enforceable if it is unfair. To maximise the chances that it is enforceable, you and your partner should both take independent legal advice. You must also be open about your individual financial positions when you enter into the agreement. If you get married (or register a civil partnership), your cohabitation agreement might be taken into account by the court if you later divorce (or dissolve your civil partnership). It is good practice to review your cohabitation agreement every five years, or whenever there are any major changes in your circumstances - in particular, when a child is born. If you wish to discuss this further then please contact us.

GARDENING FLOWER BOAT AHOY!

Loyal readers of Seaside News will be pleased to see that volunteers from Sustainable Wales & Sussed (by the bandstand in Porthcawl) have planted up the iconic little flower boat on the A4106 (Bridgend Road) for another summer season. Lead volunteer Jonathan Thomas pictured with Rhiannon and Jodie (Support Worker from Positive Lifestyles), has been looking after the boat now for nearly twelve years. His eye-catching floral displays always provide an attractive and friendly welcome to Porthcawl for residents & visitors alike. This year, we are very grateful to Geoff & Avril Protheroe for their generous donation towards the cost of summer bedding plants in memory of the late and much-loved Jean Thomas (Jonathan’s mum). If you too like the boat, do please show your support by dropping in to Sussed and browsing their range of local and international ethically sourced Fairtrade goods. Saulat Abbasi, Sustainable Wales

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB August days can still be hot so watering is essential in your garden, use grey water wherever possible. Dead heading will help your displays last longer and weeding is still necessary. If you have wisteria now is the time to prune and when summer shrubs have finished flowering they too should be pruned back. Cut back Lavenders when flowering stops and remember there is still time to take softwood cuttings. Best to take them early morning when the plant is turgid, pop them into a plastic bag and have your compost ready to plant the cuttings. Harvesting of vegetables and fruit continues, perhaps gluts can be prepared for the freezer. Members of our Club will be visiting Highfield Farm Garden near Usk this month and we are also preparing to visit the Malvern Autumn Show in September. Everyone is also scouring their gardens for plants, veg and blooms to ready for exhibiting in our 50th Annual Horticultural Show, which will take place on Saturday the 10th September at 2pm. As well as Flowers, vegetables and fruit there will be baking, preserves and crafts exhibited, refreshments will be available in the marquee. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB “August is really a new season and carries the weight of summer and the seeds of winter” – Monty Don. Talking of seeds collect them on dry days before they open, lay to dry in the greenhouse or warm windowsill. This enables them to be extracted easily from their pods, store in envelopes in an airtight tin. More plants, all free – bargain! Exploding seedheads are fun (Lupins, Violas, Aquilegias, Clematis), leave them on the plant, place a paper bag over them, give a good shake and they will hopefully explode into the bag. This is called ballistic seed dispersal! Lawns (don’t you just love them!) mow lightly and frequently so short cuttings remain on the lawn as a moisture retentive mulch, Watering grass is a waste of precious water, the lawn may look like the savannah but will bounce back after a good downpour (won’t be long). The exception is if brown patches from dog pee are ruining your lawn, these need a thorough watering to disperse the strong nitrogen present in the pee, when watered down nitrogen is actually good for your lawn! Plant and your spouse plants with you, weed and you weed alone! Chris Early

PORTHCAWL JOY-RIDERS DEMONSTRATION DAY At the Grand Pavilion, Saturday 27th August Wonderful news this week has meant that Porthcawl JOYriders Cycling Without Age group is now in a position to purchase its first Trishaw. With thanks to our supporters and volunteers, we are now able to order the first unit, to be followed by a second later in the year. We will shortly be able to offer free rides to less-abled and older members of the community along the magnificent Porthcawl seafront. Fund raising continues and all donations will be gratefully received. We are also still looking for willing volunteers to pilot the Trishaw and/or help with the administration of the group. On Saturday 27th August you are invited to come along to the Grand Pavilion from 11am onwards to see a Trishaw in action and learn more about this very worthwhile charity. This is in advance of the formal launch date, which will appear in a later issue of Seaside News. If you wish to find out more about Porthcawl JOY-riders, please check out the link below for more details or contact Steve on 07791 101081, at smcreery@hotmail.co.uk or on the Facebook page: Porthcawl JOY-riders: Cycling Without Age. https://cyclingwithoutage.org.uk
