COMMITTEE MEMBERS WANTED

Dear Editor, A speaker at Porthcawl U3A on Astronomy asked who had seen the International Space Station. Most had not; he said it is easy to see being the third brightest object in the sky, and that moving fast is easy to recognise; NASA publish a sighting timetable. On the 9th July I set my alarm for 0200. Stars were visible so I dressed and walked to the deserted Eastern Promenade and estimated an altitude of 22 degrees, WSW. I could just read my watch and had time to think that I might be barmy. To my amazement, on time, at 0225 a dot of light appeared and increased in brightness moving rapidly upwards. Within two minutes it was overhead, disappearing as predicted 10 degrees E. The ISS orbits every 90 minutes on slightly different tracks, so be sure I could believe my eyes I reset my alarm for 0330 and rested. At a quarter to four the dawn was beginning in the north-east. On time the speck of light appeared 10 degrees elevation W, passed overhead becoming faint in the growing light above the eastern horizon six minutes later. Mission accomplished! Adrian Warner, Porthcawl

LOCAL COUPLE’S DEDICATION TO FUNDRAISING IN MEMORY OF LOVED ONE Dear Editor, Local Couple David and Jennifer Perry refused to let lockdown restrictions stop them from fundraising in memory of their son’s partner, Ceri. The couple had originally signed up for Macmillan’s Gower Mighty Hike, which had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. Instead, they set out on their own mighty journey around Bridgend, where they live. Ensuring they kept within 5-mile radius restrictions, David and Jennifer spent 5.5 hours walking 25km around the area. David said: “We signed up for the event in aid of Ceri, who passed away with bone cancer in May last year. So instead, close to the anniversary of her passing away, my wife and I embarked on our own half marathon, and asked people to donate. Because I’ve had a cancer diagnosis myself, I have appreciated it a lot more because of the fact that I recovered. Ceri is sadly missed by all, and we felt that we needed to do it for her, so that we can carry helping other people.” David and Jennifer are now planning their next adventure across the Pembrokeshire coastal path. To donate to David and Jennifer’s fundraising page: https:// www.justgiving.com/fundraising/David-M-W-Perry1

Have your say email your letter through to info@seasidenews.co.uk Dear Editor, BLM Bridgend network invited residents of Porthcawl to stand with the BLM movement by ‘taking the knee’ and to share words of solidarity with the BAME community in the fight against racism. The socially distanced, peaceful protest heard inspiring commands of the power of voting, heartfelt poetry, and words from Porthcawl Town Councillors, Paul Winstanley and Alex Harris. Currently in the UK: - Black people are disproportionately more likely to be stopped and searched by the police. - BAME people are more than twice as likely to have encountered hate crime in the last week. - Less than 5% of The Windrush Generation have received compensation by the UK Government and are still fighting for justice. - BAME communities have disproportionately higher death rates of COVID-19 due to inequalities within British society. The demonstration on The Eastern Promenade was a chance for Porthcawl to show their support for those facing racism, and demand a better society. BLM Bridgend aims to go on and campaign for more diversity education within schools and campaign around the issue of hate crime. To get involved please visit the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ BLMBridgend/ Twitter: @BLMBridgend or email: blmbridgend@ gmail.com Chloe Shaye Rees - BLM Bridgend Organiser

Health & wellbeing VALLEY TO COAST 2020 Hi everyone, doesn’t it feel good know that we’re starting to slowly come out of lockdown. I don’t know about you, but I’ve missed my friends and family. If you didn’t see last months’ issue we’ve sadly decided to cancel the Valley to Coast Walk, however instead of doing the 18 mile walk from Blaengarw to Porthcawl which was the original plan we’re asking if you would do the 18 miles over the month of August. This way you are still doing the 18 miles and hopefully we’re getting some funds in, in the process. As a charity we are really lucky as we run from the offices of Moss Technical so we don’t have any overheads like rent, rate and wages etc but we still do need funds to help people, so if you’ve got any fundraising ideas, again we would really love to hear them. You can go to www.costofcancer.org.uk/events if you want to download a sponsor form. Below is the image for the walk and the logo for the company who sponsored us this year. They are Autobahn Finance, thank you to Craig and Sarah Judd for your support this year. Anyway, keep looking after yourselves as well as your friends, families and neighbours. RANGE OF CHEF-INSPIRED DISHES FOR HOME DELIVERY Customers of Wiltshire Farm Foods can now enjoy a delicious taste of summer - brought right to their door - with the new Summer Kitchen selection that has been inspired by eight leading chefs to bring fresh innovation to customer’s mealtimes. By collaborating with much-loved chefs (including Masterchef’s quarter-finalist, Jethro Lawrence), Wiltshire Farm Foods set a target of developing an exciting new range and bringing it to market within 49 days. Not only did the company want to align its values to supporting its customers in times of crisis, but it also wanted to help chefs and restaurant businesses who had been negatively affected by closures due to the pandemic. Customers can now choose from these main meals: Peter Vaughan’s Slow Cooked Beef with Onions and Dorset Ale; Richard Knighting’s Slow Cooked Lamb with Minted Peas and Beans; Elliott Lidstone’s Creamy Chicken, Pearl Barley and Cauliflower Risotto; BBC’s MasterChef: The Professionals Quarter Finalist, Jethro Lawrence’s Gammon in Somerset Cider Sauce and Simi Rezai-Ghaseemi’s Chickpea and Apricot Stew. And for those with a sweet tooth, the luxurious dessert range offers a classic Chocolate and Cherry Brownie with Vanilla Cream Sauce, a seasonal Gooseberry Bakewell Tart and indulgent Date Pudding with Coconut and Date Sauce. For details of the full range, call 01792 459999 or visit: www.wiltshirefarmfoods.com/summer

FEAR OF DEATH The Buddha identified four factors conditioning fear of death. Those whose life has been based on the pursuit and enjoyment of sense pleasures tend to see death in terms of their approaching separation from those pleasures, and thus experience fear. Those who have been obsessed with their body and identified with it, tend to fear death as the separation from that cherished body. Those who have committed deeds for which they feel remorse may look on death as a precursor to some kind of payment for their bad actions, and feel fear. Lastly, those who are confused and without an inner refuge tend to experience doubts and mental agitation regarding their coming death, which results in fear. Little or no fear of death is shown by those people who have not given such value to sense pleasures or their body; to those who have committed many good actions and are confident of the good karmic results of those actions awaiting them after death; and by those who have an inner refuge and a calm, stable mind. A whole life path of generosity, meditation, admirable friendship, living within the precepts makes life smoother and less troubled for the individual and the family unit. The touching and witnessing of streams of virtue in the end of someone’s life is a moment of great triumph. We hear that death is sad and terrible and there are seven stages of grief. But that is not everyone’s experience. Neville Evans 14 | seaside news

Local news BETTER CONNECTIONS FOR PORTHCAWL Porthcawl has had a raw deal for decades as far as public transport is concerned. The town’s railway line was ripped up in the 1960’s and since then it has been reliant on buses. I am hopeful that the Cardiff Capital City Deal, with a special emphasis on connectivity, will benefit Porthcawl especially as a Metro Plus scheme is being planned with a Porthcawl-Cardiff corridor using bus and rail. As part of this, a new bus station with park and ride facilities is to be built on Salt Lake near the new proposed food store. This will enable residents to take a bus to Pyle railway station, which is being upgraded with a large car park. Here, travellers can go east to Bridgend and Cardiff or west to Swansea. This will also benefit the Pyle area especially as there is talk of reviving the Swanline services, which saw the re-opening of Pyle railway station in the 1990’s. This connected to Swansea via new stations at Baglan, Briton Ferry and Llansamlet. Improving transport links is a major part of the UK government’s strategy and it has invested £500m into the Cardiff City deal with Welsh Government and local authorities also contributing. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

DO SUMMER DIFFERENTLY Bridgend Council’s Events Team is inviting people to come up with ideas for outdoor events that can be staged at Porthcawl over the summer. At the moment, not all publicly accessible spaces can be used for events. Lockdown is being eased for established cultural and heritage destinations and venues open to the public. The team is asking for innovative suggestions for cultural and entertainment events to be held in the open-air at places like Salt Lake or Rest Bay. They are suggesting that things like concerts, cinema screenings or even disco’s could take place but that will depend on Welsh Government permitting it. Porthcawl’s many hospitality businesses are dependent on the town’s holiday trade and with Trecco Bay re-opened and hotels and guest houses also gearing up to receive visitors, it is to be hoped that people will again holiday in Porthcawl. But one-off events like concerts also bring in people for the day and they provide business for our cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars. Let’s hope Welsh Government confirms it’s safe to do so sooner rather than later. We must also ensure that there is no noise or litter nuisance for residents of Porthcawl if such events go ahead. SCHOOLS PREPARE TO REOPEN

A NEW NORMAL

Schools across Bridgend County Borough will reopen next month to welcome pupils back in a phased, controlled manner. Only teachers and staff will attend local schools between 1-3 September so that necessary preparations can be made, then priority year groups will return on 4 September. This will cover reception at infant schools, year three and year six at junior schools, reception and year six at primary schools, and year seven at secondary schools. Mynydd Cynffig Primary will also accept year three pupils, while schools will have advised parents directly on arrangements for pupils in other year groups and at special schools. Parents will have also been advised on which year groups should attend between 7–9 September, and then schools will open as normal to all pupils on 10-11 September. I’d like to once again thank our dedicated heads, teachers, governing bodies, teaching assistants, support staff, catering staff, administrative staff, caretakers, cleaners and volunteers without whom the impact of the pandemic would have been far greater. These plans are of course dependent on latest developments in national advice around the ongoing pandemic, but schools and the council will seek to let you know about any amendments as quickly as possible.

We are getting used to a ‘new normal’. As restrictions are eased and Wales gradually and cautiously unlocks, some of the activities that we all enjoyed before Covid 19 are resuming. Alongside the reopening and rebuilding of our economy, work continues looking at how we can safely reopen more of our NHS- more of our primary and secondary care services. Cancer screening services have resumed, dental and optometry practices are gradually re-introducing a broader range of services and our health boards are looking at how they can bring back essential and routine services whilst still being prepared to respond to future peaks. Speaking to health professionals, I know there is a lot of work ongoing to create Covid free zones inside our hospitals so that they can continue to bring patients in for the treatments they need. Indeed, it will not be business as usual as we have to learn to live alongside Covid at least for now. Coupled with this, the NHS is preparing for the winter that lies ahead. This virus hasn’t gone away, and a second spike would be catastrophic for the economy. We all have our part to play in helping to avoid that.

NEXT WAVE OF FLOOD DEFENCE WORK MOVES CLOSER I’m delighted that Welsh Government has approved the next phase in the council’s sea flood defence scheme for Porthcawl. The £6m project aims to protect more than 500 homes and over 170 businesses, and follows the success of a £3m project, which has already replaced sea defences at Town Beach. The all-new terraced design at the old ‘tarmac beach’ is protecting more than 260 homes, businesses and historic buildings along the seafront area. Now the next phase will see major work undertaken at the Western Breakwater, Eastern Promenade, Sandy Bay and Rhych Point. The scheme forms a vital part of the infrastructure for defending the town against flooding, and will safeguard any future development at Salt Lake. We are currently carrying out the tender process for the work, so look out for more news soon. In other developments, residents can now receive tailored council news and information thanks to govDelivery, a secure information platform, which enables you to select updates on subjects and news that matches your interests. The free platform has proven especially useful during the ongoing pandemic, and you can join up, change your selections or sign out at any time - find out more at our govDelivery webpage. COUNCIL EXTENDS FREE RENT SUPPORT Traders who have not had to pay to use premises owned by Bridgend County Borough Council for the last three months are benefitting from an extra month of free rent. While the coronavirus pandemic has been in effect, the local authority has not charged small or medium-sized enterprises for renting council premises. Now that businesses are starting to reopen and lockdown restrictions are being eased, the council has extended the rentfree period by another month. This effectively represents an additional business support package of more than £200,000. Whether it is through the free parking currently available at many car parks, the £28m that we have processed in financial support grants, the ongoing rent-free period or the free startback training and equipment that we have provided, the council is continuing to do all that it can to support local traders and help them meet the challenges of the coronavirus. We will be considering additional transitional phases designed to help small and medium-sized businesses as the pandemic develops further, and are also continuing to work alongside a wide range of partners to provide expert advice and support which reflects the latest national guidance visit www.bridgend.gov.uk to find out more. BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE

Project Reality: due to Covid-19 the Bank of England says Britain faces its deepest recession ever, and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development forecasts Britain’s recession will be the worst among all developed countries. Unemployment in retail, travel and hospitality is already rocketing, while manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, finance and other sectors will suffer further from brexit. Using Covid-19 as a cover for brexit’s effects will not wash. Even Patrick Minford, one of the few economists to support brexit, admitted it would wipe out UK car manufacturing. The Road Haulage Association describes expected customs checks as a potential disaster. Price-inflation of food and other imports are widely predicted. B4E’s Treasurer Alana Davies and family (pictured) represent three generations with a strong interest in Europe. While cabinet minister Jacob Rees-Mogg has declared that benefits from brexit will take 50 years to arrive, nobody has specified what these “benefits” are. The Davies family hope that former minister Anna Soubry is correct when she predicts Britain re-joining the EU within 10 years. Their hopes are supported by B4E and democratically organised campaign groups across the UK, as we face the coming storm of double danger to this country. Allison Felton bridgend@walesforeurope.org

T.D. BAGG’S LUGGAGE SERVICE

The photograph shows a luggage cart parked sideways in Dock Street, possibly waiting for a customer from the Porthcawl Hotel opposite. A lack of development in that area suggests that the photograph may belong to the late 1800’s/early 1900’s; before the Railway Station opened at the end of the street in 1916 and after the Porthcawl Hotel was ‘extensively enlarged in 1891.’ (L.S. Higgins) The luggage service was provided by T. D. Bagg, Philadelphia Road. Although, Mr Thomas David Bagg came to live in Philadelphia Road, he, his wife Mary and children William and Elizabeth, had originally lived in Nottage during which time Thomas was a porter with the GWR. By 1891 they had moved to Philadelphia Road when Thomas had become a coal trimmer at a local colliery, possibly due to better wages. In 1901 Thomas is referred to as a Dock Labourer. Possibly this necessitated a needed supplement to his wages which may have motivated him to create his luggage business calling on his experience as a porter. Interestingly, his son, William had become a building contractor in the town by this time. Sadly, Thomas died in 1908, aged 58 years old. Ceri Joseph

WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE Anne-Marie Walters was born in Geneva on 16 March 1923. Under the codename ‘Colette’ she served the Wheelwright network as a courier. Twenty years old when she arrived in France, on 4 January 1944, Anne-Marie was the SOE’s secondyoungest female agent. On 16 March 1944, Anne-Marie celebrated her twenty-first birthday. Her hosts provided a beautifully decorated birthday cake with twenty-one lighted candles. However, the candles soon emptied the room for they were pieces of detonating fuse painted pink by the group’s explosives expert! After D-Day the French Resistance became bolder and the Nazis more brutal in suppressing any opposition. On 21 June 1944, 2,000 Nazi soldiers attacked a village. During the battle, AnneMarie distributed hand-grenades to the Resistance and buried incriminating documents in a cave under a church. She also collected SOE money and took it with her when she and her colleagues withdrew from the village. In 1946, Anne-Marie published a book, Moondrop to Gascony, detailing her experiences in the SOE. Her book, beautifully written, won the John Llewellyn-Rhys prize in 1947. ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

A term like no other, the past few months have tested children,

On June 29th we opened our doors for the first time since lockdown and warmly welcomed our pupils back. The school had been transformed into a sea of rainbows to make it as welcoming and appealing to our learners. It has been lovely to see all of our pupils who returned to our check in and catch up sessions. Our year six pupils have been busy making a video diary of their memories of Newton Primary School before they move onto secondary school. We would like to take this opportunity to wish our year 6 the very best of luck on their new adventures. Always remember to shine, as you are all super stars! Newton Primary staff would like to reiterate our thanks to the NHS and key workers for their amazing work that they have done throughout this pandemic. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents and carers for their continued support in working with us to home school their children. You really have all been truly amazing! Just a little reminder, if your child is aged 3 before the 31st August 2020 you can enroll online at BCBC for your child’s nursery place. Keep an eye out on our school’s web site for up-to date information or please email the school on newtonprimaryschool@bridgend.gov.uk for our schools settling in process. We wish you all both old and new pupils and their families a lovely summer. Take care and stay safe, we look forward to seeing you all in September. Rachel John

parents and teachers alike. Here at St Clare’s the adaptability, resilience and stamina of our school community has seen us through an academically highly successful term, despite logistical challenges. Whilst our buildings may have been closed until 29th June, the school itself has certainly remained virtually open throughout. We have risen to the challenge of online education and been grateful to see the structure of our school day remain as normal as possible. Learning has continued at a fantastic pace! GCSE and A-Level students took part in the Inspiring Futures programme, as we joined forces with 10 other Cognita Schools to prepare our Year 11s for post-16 studies through online taster lessons and Year 13s with online courses delivered by institutions such as Yale University. Admissions have been busy conducting virtual open days and virtual tours, even integrating new pupils into online classes mid-term. Parental feedback has been overwhelming and kept us motivated in our efforts to deliver a meaningful and quality education for pupils. We wish you all a safe and relaxing summer. Please don’t hesitate to contact Admissions should you have any queries prior to September. Helen Hier, Head Teacher

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a strange few months but we are so proud of all the amazing work our pupils have produced. Foundation Phase children have excelled themselves using Google Classroom. They have enjoyed completing learning tasks based on various topics such as space, spiders and pirates. Nursery have enjoyed sharing their learning with us as part of our ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ and Reception class had great fun writing their own songs and performing them using the musical instruments they made. Year one pupils took on the ‘Funky Friday’ challenges every week and the Year 2 pupils were amazed to see a video of a real dragon appear in their teacher’s garden one day! In Key Stage 2 both the staff and pupils also needed to become Google Classroom experts quickly. Each week our pupils have got creative in an art challenge as well as taking part in weekly photo competitions. They have also been writing every week and even though we have missed the pupils we have really enjoyed reading their amazing work each week. The children and their families have blown us away with their enthusiasm towards their home learning and we are looking forward to them returning to school in September. PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL As a most challenging and uncertain school year draws to a close, we say a final goodbye and good luck to Year 11 and Year 13 pupils who formally leave PCS to go on to their next adventure. Although reached rather differently this year, August results still await them with A Levels on 13th and GCSE on 20th. The anticipation and expectation is the same this year as any other and I would like to wish all our learners well in achieving their goals and obtaining the results that they deserve. School closed so suddenly that there was not time to say a proper goodbye, which was distressing for many. Pupils and staff have worked incredibly hard under extremely difficult circumstances and I thank you all for your dedication and wish you luck for the future. Years 7-10 were given the opportunity to “Check in, Catch Up and Prepare” and focused on pupils’ wellbeing, including reflecting on and sharing their experiences during lockdown with their teachers. Other topics covered were resilience, self-care and looking out for each other in these unusual times, finishing with an online safety blockbusters quiz. The second sessions were skills-based activities centred on the Olympics, a theme park on Locks Common and a post truth world. Year 12 had the opportunity to catch up with their Head of Year and class teachers to prepare for Year 13 courses in September when we look forward to welcoming all pupils back to school. Further information regarding return to school will be shared via the Parent App and the school website. www.porthcawlschool.co.uk Andrew Slade Head Teacher

Poets corner AFTER MONTHS OF PANDEMIC DEVASTATION As life goes on today After months of pandemic devastation, We look forward to the future, With hope and intrepidation. Many losses of lives throughout the world, Lots of families left with broken hearts, Their loved ones no longer with us, So they are trying to make new starts. Pharmaceutical companies working hard, Trying to find vaccine worldwide, Without this you may be vulnerable for years, And can contract it wherever you try to hide. We live in hope each day Believing our own faith will protect us, From a pandemic Corona virus so deadly, Which is brutally very infectious. Written by David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

COVID 19 Is a plague come on us as in Egypt’s land In those days of so long ago? Pharaoh had only to ask that it soon be gone If only he’d kept to his ‘No.’ No to oppression, cruelty and pain As he built his cities so strong And do we care for the cheated, the poor And sorting out right from wrong? Oh yes, we care that we can’t meet our friends And no holidays, parties or fun, But what of the poor, imprisoned, afraid? What of freedom for everyone? Oh, what did it take that those slaves be set free? And what was the price that was paid? A lamb for a house, and its blood on the door As the angel of death did invade And we know that God gave his Son as our lamb That we are forgiven and free So let’s pray for God’s mercy, protection and grace And contentment for you and for me. LITTLE THINGS

THE WEATHER

Little things please little minds, My father used to say, But in these oh so gloomy times They can brighten any day. A simple smile, perhaps a wave, From a stranger or a friend, Can make a huge impression, On that you can depend. So take some time to share the warmth That lies within your soul. Give a smile and say ‘Hello’, Spread a little glow. Whether giving or receiving We lighten someone’s load. Ease those heavy footsteps As we tread life’s weary road. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

“What a lovely day,” I say To family or passers by, Hiding sin and guilt Behind a web of innocence. “Isn’t the weather awful,” I say, Drowning in a well of sadness, Brim full of failures, Or, sailing under a cloud of weather charms That chime with my mood, I’m blown into port by the hurricane wind And led to my doom. The windy ghost of an old woman hurls around, Snarls at the waves beating the Prom, Drenched in the flecking, floating foam, In an eerie studio light That silvers the seething sea. Owned by the weather, The omen of our dreams, The Mussolini, the Hitler of our lives, The ultimate Dictator. Sally Richards, Porthcawl

LOOK TO THE SUN Look to the sun and feel its heat As it penetrates from head to feet, Look to the rain to clear your path As it gives the earth a well earned bath, Look to the snow to cleanse your thoughts Of bad emotions that you have fought, Look to the wind as it clears the air And frees your mind of all that’s there, Look to the stars to give you hope To gather the tools that will help you cope, Look to the moon to light your way So that tomorrow will be a beautiful day, Look to your friends to help you through Don’t forget your Angel who takes care of you. THE PAST FORGOTTEN When all traces of history are laid to waste, What then will stand in its place? When every statue is hurled to the ground, From which new source will greater men be found? When every street is swiftly renamed, And heroes of forgotten wars defamed, What then shall remain? If the demands of the mob are met, Who bid that we the past forget, With what shall we be left? PORTHCAWL VETERANS HUB

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES

Although Porthcawl Veterans Hub has been closed since the end of March, our committee have been working hard behind the scenes to support members and the wider community. To commemorate VE Day on 8th May a flag raising ceremony was held at the hub building. This was also the first use of our flagpole. Throughout the last 2 months flags of regiments/services that our members served in have been raised for a week at a time to maintain morale. Several committee members have been volunteering with the Porthcawl Covid 19 Strategy Group. The hub building has also been in use as a base for coordinating the distribution of medicines to vulnerable members of the community. Although our building is closed for our meetings, we remain available for veterans to contact us for help and support. If there are any veterans, or their families that may be isolated and need support or assistance during the pandemic, we would encourage them to contact us and we will do what we can to help. We hope to see you all again soon. Get in touch with Porthcawl Veterans Hub by ringing Louise (Membership Secretary) on 07518 416265. Louise Magenty Membership Secretary

Where were the Christians of Porthcawl during the Coronavirus crisis? 1. At the Food Bank continuing to provide practical support to the most needy in our community. Thank you to everyone who helped by donating food and household essentials. 2. All over town, supporting groups like the Porthcawl Covid 19 Strategy Group who did a wonderful work arranging for the home delivery of foods and medicines to those ‘shielding’ from the virus. 3. Online and making the most of social media. There are some great examples of local church services now available on YouTube, Facebook etc. Check them out and hear their amazing message of faith, hope and love. 4. On the phone, or texting, or using email, or ‘snail mail’ to keep in touch with church members, neighbours, family and friends, supporting everyone in the stressful and emotionally challenging lockdown. 5. At home, helping to stop the spread of the virus by the sacrifice of closing church buildings. Yet while the buildings were closed the church itself was very active. Now the buildings are open, come and join us. And there is much more. If only I had room... Jesus said ‘You are the salt of the earth’ (Matthew 5:13) Rev. Martin Gillard (www.gilgal.co.uk)

We are all missing social contact and fellowship but have to find new ways to reach each other. We have organised a Bible study via Zoom and this will also be used for our Church Council meetings. We will be exploring ways in which we can safely open the church for services. Many changes and adaptations will be necessary to meet Government guidelines and protect our vulnerable members. Until we can meet all safety requirements we will need to continue virtual meetings and Services. The Trinity Bargain Corner is hoping to partially open during August on selected mornings. This will be outside the church and 28 | seaside news

The workshop is still closed due to social distancing, it is difficult for us to comply with the rules as our premises are quite small but we are considering ways to get back to work. At the present time we are unable to accept any tool deliveries, as we have no staff to process and store them. I would like to say a few words about the late Brian Froley. He was a great friend of ours and helped us on many occasions with various electrical issues over the years, always willing to give advice and suggestions. We had a large grit blaster given to us so we asked Brian to look at what we needed to get it working, the electrical load was so great that Brian gave us a choice of running the blaster or the workshop, sadly it had to go. One of his last act of kindness was to donate a trailer that he had built several years ago, it needed some work which was duly carried out by our members and now is back on the road, see photo. Our first pick up using it was to Barry, it worked perfectly. David Cook, Workshop Manager

Deadline date for the September issue is: Saturday 15th August

Club features PORTHCAWL LIONS

Outgoing President Joan Cosson passes the Porthcawl Lions Presidential Chain across a social distance to her successor Lorrie Desmond-Williams Porthcawl Lions are looking forward to resuming their activities as soon as possible and have started meeting by Zoom. At her first meeting i/c Lorrie thanked Joan for holding things together in a very difficult time. This is the more true with an age profile to extend covid-caution, so new younger members would be all the more welcome - to enjoy our fund-raising and community activities and friendly company contact Jim on 859505. Andrew Collier

THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL It has been four months since we met last and we have no idea when we will be able to meet again, however we have not been idle. We have still been able to make donations to deserving causes and have given donations to the Guide Hall, the Porthcawl covid baker’s cookery book and the Inner Wheel International Covid 19 fund. July 1st is the start of a new year and the inauguration of a new President. We could not go out for our usual club afternoon tea but had a little ceremony where outgoing President Judy Moatt handed the chain of office to our new President Mary Emment Lewis, who intends to make Autism Awareness and Liver disease her charities for the year. Hopefully things will be back to normal before too long and we will be able to resume our monthly meetings and coffee mornings. Keep well and safe. Liz Jones

SANDVILLE SELF HELP CENTRE Like many organisations we have had to close our doors here at Sandville Court from the 23rd March to the present, with no idea when we will be able to open once again. This has been so sad for all our Patients, Volunteers and Therapist’s when you consider approximately 130 patients a week attended the centre. We are also missing our Respite Patients who stay with us from Mon – Fri and come from all over the UK. We have had two staff members on furlough for three months, but I have worked 10-2pm to keep the place ticking over and I have also done Self Hypnosis via telephone, in fact I did 90 patients in May and 70 in June. The centre has taken advantage during this period and we have had our big activity room known as ‘Colin’s Room’, and our bar lounge known as ‘Porthcawl Truckers Bar’ refurbished. The carpets and furnishings were done by James, of Porthcawl Furnishers and the curtains and cushions by Omega Interiors. We hope everyone associated with the Sandville is keeping well, and we look forward to seeing you when this difficult time ends. God Bless. Sister Gwyneth Poacher

Deadline date for the September issue is: Saturday 15th August NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL During June we dealt with 6 logged incidents and we monitored a further 12. The logged incidents involved various surfers and swimmers in difficulty and a Coastguard request to monitor a vessel also believed to be in difficulty. With single-crewed watches our priorities have been monitoring the shoreline and small craft users close to shore using our CCTV and high-powered optics. We logged 46 commercial vessels, 782 leisure craft, 1 military and 9 others. We hope to have a new CCTV camera installed at Ogmore by Sea soon, covering the dangerous river mouth at Ogmore. This will join the other cameras in the network and be controlled from our tower. All of course can be monitored by the Coastguard Operations Centre at Milford Haven or in fact any Coastguard Operations Centre in the UK. We send good luck wishes and a huge “Thank You” to the Porthcawl Polar Bears who are swimming across the English Channel to raise money for us and Porthcawl RNLI. Our traditional fund-raising activities have been curtailed by Covid19 and the restrictions put upon us. As an organisation that relies totally on public donations, such a gesture means so much to us in the current climate. Nick Weedon Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

PRoPERtY Law UPDatE the Housing Market in wales begins to re-open

As from 22nd June 2020, the law in Wales has allowed you to move home if your sale has been previously agreed but not yet completed. The property must have been empty for at least three days or there is evidence that the property has been deep cleaned. This will be the same if a tenancy has also been agreed.

You will be able to place your home on the market for sale, but if you are living at that property or it has tenants (occupied) then viewings by potential buyers and or tenants can only be carried out virtually. In the week commencing 27 July 2020, the Welsh Government will look again at the latest health advice and evidence and consider fully reopening the housing market to allow viewings in occupied properties, which will be welcome news to house sellers and buyers who are keen move home. the welsh Government has issued further guidance which can be viewed at: https://gov. wales/moving-home-during-coronavirus-pandemic

Stamp duty holiday for Buyers in wales

The Finance Minister for Wales has confirmed that there will be a Homebuyer’s tax holiday for Wales. The starting threshold for land transaction tax will increase from £180,000 to £250,000 for the residential main rates when the new measure is introduced on Monday 27th July 2020. The tax reduction will last until 31st March 2021. It is said that the changes reflect the nature of the housing market in Wales, where house prices on average are considerably lower in Wales than in England.

However, the tax reduction will not apply to purchase on additional properties including buy to let and second homes. For further information please read https://gov.wales/finance-minister-sets-out-homebuyerstax-holiday-for-wales

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My wife and I are separated 3 months ago. We get on reasonably well. I wish to start Divorce proceedings and have heard that I can now do so on a “no fault” basis. This is my preferred option. This is no one else involved for either party. How soon can I get the ball rolling? Answer:I am pleased to report that the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill has received Royal Assent and that “no fault divorce” will be implemented from the Autumn of 2021. This is long overdue. Until now the divorce law in the UK has not seen any changes for the past 50 years. The Law Society President Simon Davies recently commented “ The introduction of “no fault divorce is a landmark moment and will change for the better the way couples separate”. Currently, those couples wishing to divorce have to prove a fault based fact of adultery or behaviour against the other spouse or in the alternative wait for either 2 or 5 years separation. The question for you is whether you wish wait for at least another 12 months before starting the Divorce proceedings. Clearly, by doing so, you are likely to cut any unnecessary conflict with your wife and stand a better chance of moving on amicably and focus on what really matters. You will not be citing any blame against your wife for the marriage breakdown. If you cannot wait another year or so, your only option is to file for divorce now on the fact of your wife’s conduct and cite reasons why you believe her behaviour has led to the marriage breaking down. You have to weigh up the speed you wish to be divorced against the sort of future relationship you want with your wife. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE CLOSE TO ME DIES If a family member has died but you cannot find a will, you should make sure you have checked thoroughly: • Search the house and any paperwork. • Contact any solicitors or other professional advisers you know they used. • Consider searching the National Will Register, which may provide a record if a solicitor holds her will. • Ask their bank in case they have the will. • Consider searching at the Probate Registry in case they have the will in safe-keeping. • Ask any other family or friends who you think might know. If you still can’t find a Will, you may need to assume that it doesn’t exist and that person died ‘intestate’. If so, you can apply to the Probate Registry for a ‘Grant of Letters of Administration’ or ask your solicitor to do this on your behalf. If you do locate a Will, you will need to ascertain who are appointed as the executors, this gives them authority to deal with the estate by collecting in all assets, applying for Grant of Probate, selling or transferring Property/Land and distributing the assets in accordance with the Will. It will also be the executors who notify the beneficiaries of their entitlement to the estate. The Will may specifically detail who is entitled to what personal items (Jewellery, Panting etc) however often it may say ‘All personal chattels to be distributed between my children equally.’ Or it may be silent on this issue altogether and this is when problems normally arise particularly if these have sentimental value. It can help to have everything valued (some items may already have been valued as part of the process of working out any inheritance tax payable). After all, there is little point arguing over who gets something if it isn’t worth more to you than it could be sold for. You might then be able to work out a system for sharing the other items out. For example, you might take it in turns to each pick something you want or you could ‘auction’ the items among yourselves, with the winning bidder for each item agreeing to accept a proportionately smaller share of any cash. Once agreement has been reached, then the remaining estate can be distributed in accordance with the Will once the monies and assets have been called in, and debts from the estate paid. When you make a will, you may think that you have all eventualities covered, but by failing to check your pension policy and particularly the names of those you nominated as beneficiaries when you set up the pension, you are leaving yourself open to leaving a sum of money to someone you may not want to. Since 2015, it has been possible to pass on any unused pension money tax free. These days, most pensions are written into trust which means that they fall out of your estate when you die, and so may not pass to people you have named in your will. When you place your pension pot or an insurance policy into trust, you have to name a beneficiary to receive that fund. If you name your Partner for example, then separate at a later date and change your will to leave assets to your children, you may still find that your Partner would receive your pension monies. Therefore it is prudent to check your policy and the identity of your chosen beneficiary. With the rise in the number of divorces, family structures are getting more complicated and so people are increasingly at risk of losing track of their pension and insurance plans, and of who will inherit them. It seems that anyone recently married, divorce, separated, bereaved or widowed is at risk of leaving an accidental legacy. Further, if your pension is not written into trust, it could form part of your estate and could be liable for inheritance tax. If this is the case, the money cannot be released until the tax is paid and the estate wound up. So, it is best to treat nomination forms like your will and update them after changes in lifestyle or personal circumstances. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

Business & finance REGULATOR FORCES BROKER TO CHANGE ‘MISLEADING’ AD

FLEXIBILITY IN RETIREMENT You might want to look at Income Drawdown. This is where you leave your pension pot invested and take a pension income directly from it instead of using the money to buy an annuity. As your pension pot remains invested it will continue to benefit from any investment growth. Since pension reforms were introduced in April 2015, more and more retirees have opted to take flexible withdrawals from their pension funds and the Financial Conduct Authority has reported that drawdown has become much more popular than annuities. Whilst drawdown offers greater flexibility there are risks that you need to be aware of. Unlike an annuity the amount you could draw, as income isn’t guaranteed. Your pension fund remains invested which means that you are exposed to market movements. This makes it even more important to take good independent professional advice as without it you might set your income level too high and you might risk running out of money too soon. Your financial advisor should have a ‘cash-flow analysis’ tool to check how long your pension could last. In Drawdown you can take monthly income or just lump sums as and when you need funds, this can be organised around any other pensions you have so as to mitigate tax, you can’t do this with an annuity. Whilst it’s no longer obligatory to take an annuity at retirement, they still have benefits to offer. It’s possible to put a portion of your pension pot into an annuity and leave the rest in drawdown to get the best of both worlds. Just remember once you buy an annuity there is no going back but you can move from drawdown to annuity anytime. Drawdown funds will transfer to your beneficiaries on death, spouse, children or grandchildren but annuities can die with you. This is one of the main reasons why drawdown will remain popular, as you are able to retain wealth within your family. Whatever options you take it’s important to seek independent financial advice. Philip Vaughan is a director at Abacus Assurance Financial Services Ltd Porthcawl

If you watch certain channels on daytime or early evening TV, many of you may have seen frequent adverts from one of the UK’s largest brokers of Equity Release mortgages, where they claim that their advice is free of charge. Now, for some time this has rankled local Advisers like ourselves because we knew the advertising to be misleading, since although the actual advice may be free, the broker arrangement fee certainly was hefty and that was never mentioned. So the company has now had to make clearer what the situation really is, as required by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) following a number of public complaints. At Dragon Financial, we have never charged a fee until we are certain that the lender will lend, plus on every type of mortgage we arrange, our fee is always fixed – we do not charge a percentage, as this would be unfair to the borrower, since the same amount of work is involved, whether the property is worth £100,000 or a Million Pounds. Why would you want to pay, for example, a fee between 1% and 1.5% on a mortgage of say, £150,000, when you could come to us and be charged a fixed fee which would be substantially lower, guaranteed? The Broker mentioned above had to admit also, that (as they also have a range of their own products) the advice was only free on their own in-house schemes, whereas we know they charge a percentage fee on the products from all other lenders. For our part at Dragon, the fee is always fixed irrespective of the borrowing amount and for all lenders that we use in the whole of the market. As a result, typically we are very much lower with our costs than the large Broker in question and will guarantee to always be lower on our fees, perhaps one of the reasons that we have so many Clients in this category. So, if you have any reason to talk over Equity Release or Later Life Borrowing (including Retirement Interest-Only mortgages, known as RIOs), please give us a call. For the months of August and September 2020, we are offering a FREE Will (a Will each for couples) OR a half-price Lasting Power of Attorney with every Equity Release or Later Life Mortgage we arrange, once the loan has completed, so another great reason to speak to us first. Call 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 for an informal chat by phone initially and we take calls outside of normal business hours

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB Our Club remains closed in accordance with Government Guidelines, however our shop ‘The Cabin’ is now open every Saturday morning between 10am - 12 noon, Click and Collect is still available for those who prefer that method of collecting their gardening needs. On the 20th July the Government is allowing Community Centres and Village Halls to open but with many restrictions, so the Committee will meet and try to find a way forward for keeping Club activities going. August in the garden is often a hot month, so watering and dead heading continues to ensure those lovely flower beds continue into September. Cut back those shrubs that have finished flowering, as Lavender dies back a good prune is called for to ensure good growth next season. Don’t delay summer pruning of fruit trees. Harvest your vegetables as they become ripe and ready to eat. Enjoy your garden and do stay safe. Follow us on Facebook for the latest developments. Our members should now be taking photos of blooms, vegetable plots and flowerbeds ready to enter our online competition. Susan Ford

Deadline date for the September issue is: Saturday 15th August

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

The garden will be slowly running out of steam after blooming beautifully this summer (apart from my rain battered rambler!) As it rained on Swithins day, I fear we are in for a wet August, (old wives tale or not?) Anyway let’s keep everything in the garden as nice as we can for as long as we can! Keep dead heading roses until towards the end of the month then leave them as they will be getting ready to hibernate (they do honestly) producing hips is nature’s way of telling your bush it’s time to lie dormant for the long cold winter ahead, stop feeding too as this promotes new growth and if it’s growing when a hard freeze arrives it could easily be goodbye sweet bush altogether! Pigeons seem to like the same veg as us and a flock of pigeons can go through a cabbage patch faster than a pack of locusts! Make believe snakes are an excellent deterrent, cut an old hose into 3-foot lengths, lay in snake shapes around your veg visible from the air, that’ll scare them! Did you know – Nasturtiums means “nose twister” in Latin, referring to people’s reaction on tasting the flowers! Chris Early

Arts & music STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Great to see our favourite magazine through our doors again. I’ve been off Facebook, as, being a serious respected world-renowned songwriter, there’s only so much ‘Rock the Lockdown’ and ‘Virtual Jam’ one can take! On a serious note, I can’t see live music coming back this year even when the pubs are open. The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF), which represents 65 UK festivals, reported that 92% of its members were facing costs that could ruin their businesses and 98.5% were uninsured for Covidrelated cancellations. Although the government has put some finance into the entertainment industry it’s not going to help the grass roots end of it and sadly I fear it’s going to get tough for venues. Nice to see two of our top musos back! Porthcawl based Ed Rees’s new band, One Time Alive, has a new song/video out called ‘Fact from Fiction’, while The Mighty RA, featuring Andy Edwards, has a single out called ‘The Ballad of Dadz’. Local legend and singer with rock band Sex and Big Fat Blues Band, Phil Jones, has been seriously ill, but hopefully he’s on the mend. My own and Phil’s musical journey have run parallel for many years – rivals but great friends. We all wish him a speedy recovery. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Phil Jones and Stag

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Work has now resumed on ‘The Mystery of the Llandow Air Disaster’, and this month I am appealing for information, in the hope that someone who reads Seaside News may know, through family or friends, of one or other of two men connected with the disaster. Firstly, the pilot of the Avro Tudor 5 airliner that crashed in Sigingstone on 12th March 1950 was Captain Dennis Parsons, a former RAF bomber pilot who went on to fly in the Berlin Airlift before taking up employment with Fairflight Ltd, the owner of the doomed aircraft. At the time of his death, Captain Parsons was living in Shepperton, and before that, Maidenhead, but inquiries in the Home Counties have so far revealed nothing. Secondly, the pilot of a Cambrian Airways Dragon Rapide, which flew a similar route to the Tudor 5, was Captain Geoffrey Barclay of Bradford Place, Penarth. Apparently the two men knew each other from the Berlin Airlift days, and when they met up at Dublin Airport on the weekend of the disaster they talked 42 | seaside news

email your article info@seasidenews.co.uk about the potential difficulty of landing a big fully laden aircraft back at RAF Llandow. If you have any knowledge of either pilot, please let me know. Anthony Hontoir 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir

Sport reports SAVING LIVES AT OGMORE

REST BAY VOLUNTARY PATROLS

Pen y Bont members have made the club proud in the past few weeks - two of our members, Amelie Clode and Tomi Turner, have recently performed difficult rescues in the river. Both incidents arose when club members were training and off duty. Despite this, both members put their skills into action and saved lives, displaying courage and talent. Most excitingly, with the lifting of the 5-mile rule and car parks reopening, Pen y Bont SLSC have now begun part time patrols at Ogmore by Sea. On the 4th July, the RNLI began full time patrols at Ogmore, but the club wants to support them by placing a small group of qualified members on patrol for an hour either side of high tide on weekends throughout the summer. Although training and competitions have been put on hold indefinitely, it is great that we are in some way able to maintain our status as a lifesaving club in these tough times. In the anticipation of high numbers returning to Ogmore by Sea, we want to help keep the beach as safe as possible, within the restrictions of COVID safety. Meriel Clode

PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS SWIM Whilst we are enjoying such beautiful weather I’m sure Christmas seems a long way away for you however, the Committee who organise the Porthcawl Christmas Swim are already hard at work! With Coronavirus and Social Distancing placing restrictions on our day to day lives, a large event like the Swim which attracts thousands of people will obviously need to be given a lot of thought. We are determined to be able to offer an event on Christmas Day and to continue with the long running tradition. Exactly what that event will look like however we are not yet sure. What we are sure of is that it will be fun, it will be safe and it will help us continue to raise lots of money for local charities. We look forward to giving you more information soon – including who our headline charity will be this year. Lucy Jones 44 | seaside news

This summer Rest Bay Lifeguard Club are putting on voluntary lifeguard patrols at peak times outside of the RNLI service. We anticipate a very busy summer after months of lockdown, so want to be able to provide a safe environment to all our visitors. Already our patrols have assisted 10 people out of difficulty and given 100’s of others safety advice to keep them of danger. Our RWC has rescued a further 2 people who had got themselves into difficulty. We recommend that you always swim at a lifeguarded beach. This year Rest Bay, Sandy Bay (Coney), Trecco Bay, Ogmore and Whitmore Bay (Barry Island) have a lifeguard service from 10:00-18:00 every day. We are very proud of our club members coming together to put on extra lifeguard patrols and look forward to seeing you at Rest Bay this summer! A special thank you to CGI for their sponsorship towards PPE costs to help run our voluntary patrols. Rest Bay Lifeguard Club

PORTHCAWL U3A fundraising everywhere they decided they would do their bit to raise some money for NHS Wales so they opened a Just Giving page and got on their bikes. Our team, Pat Thomas, Margaret Price, Mark Smith, Derek Crowder and Kim Edwards, has raised £2244. We show them completing their miles. Well done all, the page is still open if you would like to contribute. https://www.justgiving.com/team/U3Acyclingteam We’ll meet again. Soon I hope! Sally Corbett Chair, Porthcawl U3A

When we suspended on March 14th we didn’t know what we were getting into or when it would end! Not that it has ended, but I just hope everyone was as thrilled as me when the letterbox rattled and the thump told me Seaside News was back! We were impressed by the efforts of Trixie Tudor and Anne Trimble when they started making masks to help keep us all safe. They distributed masks on the seafront, to members and anyone who needed one. They produced nearly 1500 masks! Some are still available from the Bus Stop Library or Stores in Nottage. Exercising being allowed our Social Cycling Group could ride even though it had to be alone. With others doing charity
