MBE AWARD CEREMONY FOR PORTHCAWL RNLI VOLUNTEER Dear Editor, The Queen’s Birthday Honours recipient - Aileen Jones - a volunteer at Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat station, was presented with her MBE this week by Prince William at Buckingham Palace. Aileen, who has been a volunteer at Porthcawl since 1995 was accompanied at the Palace by her family, husband Steve, daughter Frances and son Dan. Both Aileen and Steve hold the office of Deputy Launch Authority. Daughter Frances was a crew member until leaving for university and son Dan is currently a crew member. “It was a complete surprise and honour when I was awarded the MBE for service to the RNLI”, said Aileen. “To have my family with me at Buckingham Palace made it a really special day.” Lifeboat Operations Manager at Porthcawl, Philip Missen MBE said, “We are all so proud of Aileen who has been a stalwart at our lifeboat station. She qualified as one of the first RNLI female helms and later became the RNLI’s first female crew member in the history of the Charity to receive a Bronze Medal for gallantry. Her award of the MBE is recognition of the commitment Aileen has shown to the RNLI and to our lifeboat station here in Porthcawl.” Ian Stroud, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, Further to the letter in the November issue by Mr John Jenkins, l would like to add the following: Some time ago three councillors wrote an article “the truth” about the proposed new health center at Mallard Way, stating that there will not be a blade of grass left from the rear of Hillsbough Place through Salt Lake Car Park and part of Griffin Park when building some 1,200 homes by BCBC and Evans. The main objection to planning for the new health center was parking, so what effect will an extra 1200 homes(families) have? We must fight to save the Salt Lake Car Park. John Finney, Porthcawl
CLOSURE OF THE PORTHCAWL HOLIDAY HOTEL Dear Editor, One cannot help thinking that its central position in the town, would make a far better site for the new surgery, than the one to be built at the end of Newton Nottage road. It also has easy access to the car park . Where are the Town Planners? Does anyone remember when the Square was the local bus station? Now it’s becoming derelict. Ruth Fisher, Porthcawl

HIGHS & LOWS OF PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, During the summer I wrote a letter highlighting the problem with bags of dog waste on the coastal path leading from Rest Bay alongside the golf course. Today I learnt of a new initiative at Rest Bay encouraging people to spend a short time collecting litter from the beach. #twominutebeachclean Bins and litter collecting device provided. So my children and I headed over to do our bit towards keeping our beautiful town clean. I was delighted that the mass of bags containing dog mess are no longer and we really had to search hard for litter on the beach. Hope lots of people will take the time to complete the #twominutebeachclean and keep the beach clean and safe for all to enjoy. Stephen Gale, Porthcawl

SPOTLIGHT EMMAUS SOUTH WALES Emmaus South Wales is a homeless charity with a difference: not only does it offer formerly homeless people with a home with support, it also gives them meaningful work opportunities to re-gain their self-confidence and to rebuild new lives. Emmaus South Wales purchased and refurbished a Community Home in Bridgend, which opened in January 2016, providing 24 places for homeless people to regain control of their lives and get out of poverty. Much of the funding of the running cost of the Community is done through its Social Enterprise, which has seven shops currently trading successfully in the local area. The people living in the community are known as Companions, whose reasons for their homelessness vary, but all share a desire and drive to get a fresh start. At Emmaus, as they learn new skills, discover hidden talents and develop friendships, they gain a sense of self-worth and independence. The Emmaus South Wales shops are located in Porthcawl, Cowbridge, Maesteg, Neath, Aberdare and two in Bridgend. Our shops have an excellent selection of good quality items for Christmas gifts or to enhance your home, so why not pop in – you never know what you might find! For more information call Tom Clarke on 01656 332756
Deadline date for the January issue is: Saturday 10th December

SCHOOLS THE BURROWS NURSERY EXPANSION
AFON Y FELIN NEWS
The Burrows Nursery is very pleased and excited to announce an expansion to their After School/ Holiday Club facilities. From December, the children will have their very own Burrows Clubhouse, which is situated next door to the main Nursery building. The two units will be connected by both outside play areas, all secured with hand- made fencing. The Clubhouse consists of 1 large room for craft/homework, a smaller “snug” room for tv/reading, a kitchen and a toilet. This expansion enables us to extend our outside terrace space to link with the Clubhouse. The new area will be for our wooden play house and a garden area. The After School/Holiday Club children have been very involved in the planning of the new rooms and are very excited!! The Burrows Nursery collects from Porthcawl, Nottage and Newton Primary in Porthcawl. We also travel to Ysgol Yr Ferch o’r Sger in North Cornelly. On their return, the children are provided with a two course tea. The Burrows also provide a Breakfast Club, currently dropping children to Porthcawl and Newton Primary. Our After School Team organise and plan fun activities throughout the year. The Burrows is open from 7.30am until 6pm. For all enquiries, please ring 771285
Years five and six hosted our Harvest Assembly. They all worked very hard and it was interesting to learn what our individual family’s carbon footprint was, as calculated by the children. All the food supplied was donated to the local food bank, and the school also held a harvest raffle, which raised a whopping £200 profit! Thanks to all the parents for supporting their children and the school. The PFA held a very successful Halloween disco - there were some really scary costumes! The PFA meet in school every Wednesday morning, 9.15 - 10.15, new members are always welcome, or why not drop in for a cuppa to see what they have planned? Rehearsals are well under way for our Christmas concert Cinderella Rockafella, which promises to be spectacular as always. Welsh Water held a workshop at the school recently. The children learned how to conserve water in different ways, and we are taking part in the Teeth Brushing Challenge! We have class charts that record how we save water at home, and in school we encourage children to turn the taps off. AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor
CORNELI PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS A special assembly was held to commemorate the Aberfan tragedy and we all wore our poppies for our very moving Remembrance Day assembly, which we were able to share with some parents and governors. This commemoration had particular resonance for our year 6 children who have been studying World War 2 and recently visited Swansea 1940’s to experience life in wartime. These children have also been busy swimming and having cycle safety training, all achieving Bike Ability Level 1 and 2 awards. Kerbcraft is also helping our year 2 children to be safe on the road. We are proud that the choir sang for the pensioners, School Council members helped to plant spring bulbs in the community and that our children, who won the Young Writer’s National Competition, will have their story published. Stories too when we dressed in our PJ’s and invited parents to come in to share with us Bedtime Story Day which was thoroughly enjoyed. Much enjoyed also was the Autumn Festival, organised by the Parent Council, where there were good things to eat, fun competitions and some amazing pumpkins. We are now looking forward to the busy but exciting time that is Christmas. Sue Jones

CRICKET TRAINING FOR PENCOED COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL MLD PUPILS
Professional coach, Les Randall, from Cricket Wales paid a visit to Pencoed Comprehensive recently to teach pupils to play cricket. They learned how to control and catch the ball as well as how to stand and bat. Seventeen pupils from the MLD classes took part. One Year 10 pupil said “It was really good and an excellent learning experience. It was good we all had a chance to participate”. As well as giving pupils a lesson in cricket, Les Randall is also scouting for potential players to join the Wales Disabled Cricket Team in the future. He is returning to school over the next five weeks to continue the sessions with the MLD pupils. Anthea Powis, School Manager
CEFN CRIBWR PRIMARY SCHOOL The school was proud to be involved once again in the village’s Remembrance Day Service in Calvary Chapel and parade to the War Memorial on the common. There, the pupils of the school laid a wreath for each of the men who left the village in both World Wars but did not return. With Christmas fast approaching the pupils are busy practicing for their concerts. We hope that as many people as possible will join us in the Cefn Cribwr Community Centre for the KS2 concerts, and our own hall for the Nursery and Foundation Phase concerts. Mr S J Howells

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Year 1&2 have been busy since half term ended. We enjoyed a visit to St Fagans on a beautiful crisp autumn day. The children were able to do lots of individual research when answering questions set for them. They all enjoyed visiting Gwalia Stores and finding out how people shopped long ago. A special thanks to Miss Thomas from St Fagans for giving lots of information and answering many questions. Year 4, 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed swimming lessons at Pyle Swimming Pool. It was particularly valuable for many of our less experienced swimmers who made huge progress throughout the fortnight. All the pupils are able to take advantage of the various free swimming sessions available at Pyle and across the county. We had the pleasure of welcoming two RLNI volunteers, who are also dads of the school into a special assembly where they were presented with a cheque for the money raised from our Early Years Cake Sale. It is a pleasure to work with the RLNI, who always provide exciting tours of the lifeboat station. We are now on the countdown to Christmas and look forward to enjoying the festivities and concerts, we are sure the performances will be spectacular again this year. Merry Christmas from all at Newton! Rachel John, Head Teacher Seaside News | 18
BUSY TIMES AT PIL PRIMARY
The children thoroughly enjoyed watching Pandemonium Theatre Company present their performance of Tales from Wales. The children were treated to myths and legends from Wales, told in an inspiring and creative manner that kept all children enthused. Tythion said: “It was fun and very interesting!” Year 4 have visited the Fire Station and the local PCSO’s have come into class to speak with the children to support them in their topic - 999 Emergency! They have found the topic very interesting and exciting. Pupils and parents have been extremely generous over the term and we have raised money for numerous good causes. We raised £300 to be spilt between Y Bont and the Children’s Ward at The Princess of Wales Hopspital. A ‘red, white and green’ day to raised £250 for the Urdd and poppies have been sold in school to support the Royal British Legion. Thank you to all pupils and parents for your support and generosity. We now look forward to the Christmas rush and would like to wish everyone associated with the school and the readers of the Seaside News a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. N Pryce, Head Teacher

SCHOOLS WHAT REALLY IS CONFIDENCE PARENTS ASK ME? Often parents think confidence is just being outgoing or having a likeable personality. Or being confident in certain situations, which to a certain degree is true. At CHAMPS Academy we believe and coach what we call all-purpose ‘LIFE-CONFIDENCE-SKILLS’. Annette Du Bois, founder of CHAMPS says “The true definition of confidence is the ability and belief in yourself to be able to handle any situation with a sense of certainty, courage and clarity. Confidence is not something you do – it’s something you are.” CHAMPS Academy is all about proactive solutions not reactive expressions. I’m Marie your local CHAMPS Franchise coach and I’m delighted to help children and teens in our community with confidence and life skills to develop the essential tools and resources to manage the cycles of life. I offer sessions, workshops and One-To-One coaching to help your child/teen including • Practical Confidence & Life Skills Coaching • Weekly Confidence Club (in term time) • Back to School Anxiety Sessions • Bullying Solutions • ‘Confidence in the Classroom’ for Schools • And Much More. WEST PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL The autumn term quickly passes and school has been very busy. Year 5 boys have participated in Creative Schools project and in workshops led by applicants. The project artists are now selected and exciting times are ahead. The rugby and netball teams have a busy fixture list and have been doing really well. Da iawn! Both Key Stages participated in an Eco Day studying energy consumption, waste and transport now and in Victorian times at KS2, whilst FP focussed on building materials and reducing energy use at home. This was a day enjoyed by all. Years 5 and 6 had a wonderful time with Theatre Nanog in Swansea. They had the opportunity to explore artefacts in the Museum and watched The Ghost of Morfa Colliery. The explosions and spirits kept everyone on their toes! Year 3 and 4 have visited Porthcawl town to look at the features of Victorian buildings. Year 1 and 2 had an amazing time at Mountain View Ranch. They searched for the Gruffalo, toasted marshmallows and built dens. Also a big thank you to parents for taking up the recycling challenge. SUCCESSFUL YEAR AT PORTHCAWL PRIMARY 2016 has been a year of big achievements for everyone associated with Porthcawl Primary. Firstly this was the year we were made a Literacy Hub School - which means we are currently working with a host of schools across South Wales. It has been hugely rewarding to see our hard work have an impact in so many other schools. Our programme has continued to improve and we look forward to working with more schools in 2017. This year also saw us crowned National Formula 1 in Schools Champions. This has led to a number of unique opportunities from visiting Swansea University and the Senedd to working with established companies such as Sony and Willmott Dixon. On top of this we have had many successful PTA events, an amazing end of year production, record end of year test results, earned our Eco Platinum flag, had football and netball tournament wins and we have been made a Rights Respecting Pilot School. We look forward to future successes in 2017 and would like to wish everyone associated with PPS a Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Andrew Wood, Head Teacher

It is hard to believe that Christmas is nearly upon us! The school’s Year 6 Open Evening attracted many visitors to the school and was very successful. Please contact the head teacher for information regarding admissions if you have any concerns. Year 13 had an emotional and thought provoking trip to Auschwitz (see photo). Both staff and students said it was an amazing experience. Armistice day – the school held their two minute silence for the fallen, while our Uniformed Youth Groups stood proud and Toby Kearns, Year 11 played the trumpet to The Last Post through our whole school tannoy system - an amazing performance. Our Sixth Form Welsh Students had the opportunity to be part of the audience on the S4C show ‘Jonathan’. They developed their understanding and communication skills with Welsh celebs such as Jonathan Davies, Nigel Owen, Sarra Elgan, Aled Sion Davies ac Angharad Mair. Dates for your diary: Christmas Concert on Thursday 8th December at 7pm; all are welcome. Tickets on door. Term ends on Friday 16th December at 3:30pm. Wishing all readers of the Seaside News a blessed Christmas and a very happy New Year from the staff and pupils of Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School ‘Nadolig Llawen a Blwydden Newydd Dda’. SCHOOLS EX SWANSEA CITY FOOTBALLER VISITS RE DEPARTMENT AT BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE
The RE department at Bryntirion Comprehensive were delighted to welcome ex Swansea City footballer Lee Trundle back in July (aka ‘Magic Daps’) to the department to speak to pupils about his time as a professional football player. Lee spoke to 40 pupils across different year groups who had a passion for football about his time with Swansea City. He answered a variety of questions prepared by the pupils ranging from his views on the problem of racism in football, the role of women in the sport and his memories of his many goals! Lee was impressed with the choice of questions asked and he commented on his Twitter account that Bryntirion pupils were ‘a lovely bunch of pupils who asked some really interesting questions’. Lee explained how important it was to learn about other cultures and faiths as in the world of football there are so many different backgrounds coming together that it was essential to not be ignorant about their cultures. Lee was also enthused about girls becoming more involved in football from a young age. Lee stayed for two hours and made time to have photos taken with the pupils. He was a true professional and even had time to meet his biggest fan – Mr S. Clarke, Deputy Head Teacher who is an avid fan of Swansea City. Mrs C Matthews – Head of RE
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

We’ve also held Transition Days for our Sixth Form, Senior School and held several Monkey Music Parties in our excellent Nursery where we Seaside News | 22

It’s always a wonderful event with many bargains to be snapped up in time for Christmas! Father Christmas will also be there in his magical grotto! A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM CYNFFIG As we look forward to Christmas, festivities at Cynffig have already begun. Our staff have been soaked with sponges, whilst pupils have bought ‘Slaves for the Day’ in order to raise money for ‘Children in Need’. Pupils viewed a live broadcast of RSC’s Hamlet and were thrilled to see their insightful questions selected for it. We are looking forward to continuing their Shakespearean experience in February with King Lear! Road Safety Wales commended our pupils once again for the “exceptional” level of entries received for their poster competition. Congratulations to the winner Alexia Lloyd (Year 7) and highly commended entries from Matthew Leyshon and William Evans. Rugby and Netball teams continue in impressive form with convincing wins against Porthcawl. A fantastic performance for both Year 9 teams who remain unbeaten this season.
Congratulations also to Tom Attwood Year 7 who came an impressive 14th of over 300 competitors in the under 13’s South Wales Cross Country Championships. And finally our Christmas Carol Concert will take place on Wednesday December 7th at 6.30pm. Please join us in celebrating the season. I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year. Hannah Castle, Head Teacher

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
HOLLYWOOD COMES TO PORTHCAWL PRIMARY
Many congratulations to Mackenzie Jenkins of Year 7 who appeared in the final stages of the BBC’s Junior Bake Off, which aired in mid-November. Over 2000 children entered, and after regional heats in Bristol and various cooking challenges, only 40 made it through to the televised stages. Well done! Thank you to the parents and pupils who attended our recent 6th Form Open Evening. It was a great success and again we welcomed parents of existing pupils, as well as families from other schools, keen to come along and see what PCS has to offer them. If you were unable to attend, please contact Miss Crook on 01656 774168 or email 6thform@porthcawlschool.co.uk to arrange a tour. Tickets for our 39th consecutive school show - Little Shop of Horrors - go on sale imminently at the Grand Pavilion – Tel: 01656 815995. The show runs from 25th– 28th January 2017 and tickets start from as little as £6. The production showcases our school at its absolute best, with parents, pupils and staff working together with the common goal of producing as professional show as possible. Thank you to everyone for your commitment and dedication. It will not disappoint! Please remember our Carol Service is at 7pm on 15th December at All Saints Church – you are most welcome. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher
As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder we continue with the exciting activities at Porthcawl Primary. Firstly we are looking forward to revisiting the Sony Technology Centre after our successful trip last year. As part of their ‘It’s My Shout’ project pupils will be writing, directing, producing and acting in their own short film using all the amazing Sony technology. They will also get the chance to do some Coding using new Raspberry Pi technology. Last year’s film would have given Steven Spielberg a run for his money so we look forward to seeing the end results. We also have a trip to the engineering department of Swansea University. After last year’s Formula 1 success we are giving the pupils the chance to see the laboratories and workshops and see what opportunities are available in the world of engineering. Finally our Foundation Phase has a visit to the St Fagan’s National History Museum. This term they have been studying the local area and they will learn all about Welsh history and heritage on an event filled day. For more information on all upcoming events please see our website or our school Twitter account. Andrew Wood Head Teacher

POEMS NEWS
AFTERTHOUGHTS
WINTER WILDLIFE
A Child is born, a Son is given So old this Word, but is it new? Good news?
Are you sure that you got what you wanted? Are you certain that you can’t be wrong? From the news we are told You are mostly the old So the bleak future won’t last all that long. Are you sure that you got what you wanted? Or were you just feeling annoyed? Or to be fair Will you not really care When your grandkids end up unemployed? Are you sure that you got what you wanted? Or were you, perhaps, out of touch? And will it appall When the pound’s worth sod all And your bills are at least twice as much? Are you sure that you got what you wanted? Or are you now feeling the pain? Did you strike a false note When you cast your vote With Boris and not with your brain? Are you sure that you got what you wanted? I think not, as I’m sure time will tell It’s my humble guess You’ve created a mess And you’re dragging me through it as well. Jim Kyle (75), North Cornelly
The autumnal colours, Now changing on the leaves and trees, As temperatures start to drop again, A lot more degrees.
Our world by war and famine riven This makes for news, but Ah! We ask Good news? Though long ago this Child was given Yet you and I may be forgiven This, this is news Good news! Yes, cry aloud – Good News! Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
TODAY I’m not in school today Nanny’s looking after me I’m not very well you see My brother Arlo has to go He’s not happy about that Because I get to stay at home And play with Boots my cat My medicine is pink It tastes awful I think In school I was to give a talk today About being a lifeguard at Rest Bay I’ve been practising all week Never mind I can do it another day! Orea Lucia Player (Age 9), Pencoed
Animals and birds collecting the berries, For the winter drive, They need to pile up some food, To help them all to survive. Squirrels collecting lots of nuts, From the trees which start to sway, Hiding them to safe pockets really well, To see them through each day by day. The wildlife hunt all around, For lots of food and bedding stuff, Many start very early autumn, So they will definitely have enough. They try and teach their young, To hunt for what they will need, And those nuts and fruit left behind each year, Will start to re-grow as new seeds. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY OF PORTHCAWL Every December, Small Business Saturday takes place. This Since I was elected as Mayor to Porthcawl in May 2016 I have been privileged to attend various events within the community, and helped celebrate many great occasions and achievements of local people and organisations. I have also met some truly wonderful people within the community! Christmas is a great time to reflect upon the hard work and dedication of those around us in Porthcawl who make living and working in this town such a great pleasure. To be Mayor of Porthcawl is an honour. I’m looking forward to the New Year and all of the things yet to experience during my time as Mayor. However, before I wish my remaining time as Mayor away, may I take this opportunity, on behalf of the Mayoress and myself, to wish all the residents and visitors to the town a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year! Cllr Robert Lee, Town Mayor
Deadline date for the January issue is: Saturday 10th December
FESTIVE FUN FOR EVERYONE Christmas is upon us once more, and there are a host of festive events taking place throughout the county borough that the whole family can enjoy. These include the annual pantomime at the Grand Pavilion between 9-31 December, which this year is ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, and a special Christmas event in the John Street car park on Sunday 4 December which will feature a synthetic ice rink, rides, stalls, a reindeer pen and more. Don’t miss the arrival of Santa and his reindeers and elves at 2pm – they’ll be parading around town before giving children a chance to climb up onto their sleigh for a photograph. This will also be the last Christmas where households will use the current kerbside recycling and refuse collection service before new arrangements are introduced in April 2017. Don’t forget that Christmas food leftovers, including your turkey, can be placed in food waste recycling, and that while Christmas cards can go in the black box for cardboard, wrapping paper cannot be recycled due to its high levels of ink saturation. Please visit www.bridgend.gov.uk to find out more about festive refuse and recycling arrangements, and have a very merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year. nationwide campaign urges shoppers to forego the internet and out-of-town malls to support the many small shops and businesses on our high streets. These are the lifeblood of their communities but they are at risk. Many face unprecedented pressure from the impending increases in business rates caused by a revaluation of premises. The new assessment of rateable values (RV’s) was carried out by the Valuation Office Agency. Although out of the hands of Welsh Government, it does have the power to offer relief to traders. Despite a manifesto commitment of a tax cut for small businesses, Welsh Government has continued with its current scheme - those with RV’s of less than £6,000 pay nothing and those between £6,000 and £12,000 have tapered relief. While this is better than nothing, it does not match a longstanding Welsh Conservative promise of no rates payable under a RV of £12,000 with tapered relief to £15,000. This would mean more would qualify for help and could mean the difference between keeping going and going under – as happens in England. It’s important that people support small traders this Christmas. You’d miss them if they weren’t there.

HARBOURSIDE NEWS Following confirmation of full planning approval for the Maritime Centre and Harbour Quarter, we’re delighted to announce the award of £1.1m by Big Lottery Fund under the Community Asset Transfer Programme. We’ve appointed AECOM of Cardiff as Project Managers & Cost Consultants, with tender documents being issued later this month for the public procurement of a suitable Developer Contractor and Project Design Team. We’ll be discussing opportunities for local business with the successful contractor, providing local businesses and suppliers with an opportunity to bid for work within the project. We’ll also be confirming arrangements for both private and voluntary organisations using the building. Once individual agreements are confirmed with future occupiers of the Maritime Centre, details will be on our website. We’re now inviting further expressions of interest from local suppliers and businesses to be able to compile a list of potential sub-contractors for construction elements or as suppliers to the new businesses being created throughout the project. The expressions of interest will be listed on a strictly confidential register: Contact Jayne@porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk. Our next exciting SeaQuest event is ‘Sandy Claws’ on the 21st December, 11-3 at Sea Cadets’ Hut. Booking is essential: bookings@porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk/07816 456905. Merry Christmas!

DECK THE HALLS I love this time of year. My boots are on, the autumn colours, the fire in the grate and so many activities to look forward to in the run up to Christmas. It starts with the Christmas tree festivals. From the end of November until 3rd of December there is a week of great innovation, creativity and ingenuity in Porthcawl and Bridgend. The Christmas tree festivals in St Mary’s Nolton in Bridgend and All Saints in Porthcawl are wonderful. If they are still on while you are reading this article, get your coat, hat and scarf on and don’t miss them. In contrast I dread the shopping and card writing. Give me the concerts and carol singing any time. This year I will miss some of my favourite events. I will travel to Washington DC to attend a NATO and a Security conference in the city. After recent events in the US it is imperative we talk and understand the way forward. My apologies to those whose annual events I normally attend. To all of the readers of Seaside News I send best wishes for a very Happy Christmas and a less eventful, harmonious and peacful 2017.

UPDATE ON THE MULLIGAN COMMUNITY CENTRE (THE MC CENTRE) Recently, I joined local service providers to hear the latest plans by Mulligan Community for their MC Centre. Mulligan Community is a non-profit social enterprise and was set up in 2014 to support families and individuals across Bridgend County Borough who are at risk of living in poverty. The MC Centre will be located in Parc Tondu. Mulligan Community passionately believes that the availability of places where the community gather can have a very strong impact on the lives of people. The MC Centre will be for everyone and will provide a wide range of facilities and services specifically tailored to combat poverty and social exclusion. There will be a variety of Hubs including the Business Hub, the Family Hub, the Training Hub and a Help Hub. There are also plans for a Visitor Centre and Sports Centre. I have been very impressed with Amanda and Ed Kirk, the Directors of Mulligan Community. I have no doubt that once the MC Centre is up and running that it will quickly establish itself as an important facility in the community. I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas.

NEW WATERSPORTS CENTRE PLANNED FOR REST BAY I was really pleased to see Bridgend County Borough Council announce that it has ambitious plans for designing and developing a new watersports centre at Rest Bay in Porthcawl. This project is intended to provide new high-quality facilities for local people and visitors to the award-winning Blue Flag beach. It will also establish an iconic, contemporary attraction capable of supporting and developing sports and leisure activities in the area. Funding is currently being sought for the project and the centre forms part of an initiative to create a year-round, family-friendly local hub for water-based sports that will appeal to a broader audience of seasoned enthusiasts and beginners alike. The proposals aim to make the most of Rest Bay’s unique setting and could include enhanced café and kiosk facilities as well as improved changing and toilet amenities. Visitors, tourists and holidaymakers spent more than £313m in the county borough last year. If funding can be secured, an all-new watersports centre at Rest Bay will further consolidate Porthcawl’s growing visitor appeal and secure its potential as a coastal resort fit for the 21st century. I’m looking forward to bringing you more news on this exciting proposal as these plans develop further. Councillor Charles Smith Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

FEATURES BRIDGEND LIONS CLUB VISIT TO THE ROYAL MINT
BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS TAKE TO THE CATWALK FOR Y BONT
As the group photo portrays - there were no fundraising stalls in sight on this social visit and sadly no donations were offered in the midst of a ‘lorra lorra’ money at The Royal Mint. In the second photo, President John Paton and wife Gloria are posing by the fabulous penny coin-covered mini ‘Penny Lane’. The mini cost a pretty penny or two but President John could not spend his pennies on this glowing vehicle as it was not for sale! The visit was both informative and enjoyable. A Sunday Roast at Bryn Owain Restaurant concluded the afternoon where VicePresident, Patrick Halliwell and wife Biddy were congratulated on their Ruby Wedding Anniversary. C Thomas Tel: 01656 657846

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES
PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS
Christmas is a hugely significant season and a time of special celebration for Christians. It is a time when we remember the Incarnation - the Son of God becoming human and living among us as Jesus Christ. Jesus was born around 4BC in the little village of Bethlehem, a few miles from the city of Jerusalem. Around 30AD He died in that city, on the cross, as the ultimate sacrifice for our sin, rising from the dead as the conclusive proof that he was the Son of God. Jesus is the reason for the season. The clue is in the name, Christmas starts with Christ. Christmas is about the Christ. There is a clever Christmas poster that shows the nativity scene, followed by the words ‘Children need a stable background’. Why not celebrate this Christmas at one of your local churches, you could take the whole family to remember and celebrate the most important event in the history of the world. The Bible says ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’. Happy Christmas! Rev. Martin Gillard, Gilgal Baptist Church
Autumn being so mild has meant that colds and coughs have troubled many of our members. Now Christmas beckons and our November meeting was mainly concerned with plans for future events. After our lovely salmon dinner in the Grove Golf Club we got down to detailed plans for the Christmas activities. On Friday 11th November we held our Christmas Fayre in Trinity Church Hall. It was socially and financially a successful event. The money raised will go into our Charity Fund, which will benefit local charities. We thank everyone who attended the Fayre enabling us to further support good causes. Soon we will be involved with Rotary in the preparation, setting up and running of the Annual Christmas Tree Festival held in All Saints Church from 28th November to 5th December. The event is supported by many organisations in Porthcawl and is something we all look forward to at this time of year. The joint Rotary and Inner Wheel Christmas Family Lunch and Party will be held in Trecco Bay on Sunday 18th December. Our own Inner Wheel Christmas Dinner will be held at the Grove Golf Club Tuesday 6th December. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent

FEATURES HOW WOULD YOU RECOGNISE FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS BUDDHISM IN TODAYS WELSH SOCIETY? There will be no meeting in December 2016 as this is a busy Perhaps a religious building? A Mindfulness day? Learning about a holy day at school? A statue of the Buddha in your home? Symbolism is without doubt a powerful distraction within emerging religious practices. You can only really recognise Buddhism in your own mind and here are the key principles taken from the Pali Cannon. “These qualities lead: to dispassion, not to passion; to being unfettered, not to being fettered; to shedding, not to accumulating; to modesty, not to self-aggrandizement; to contentment, not to discontent; to seclusion, not to entanglement; to aroused persistence, not to laziness; to being unburdensome, not to being burdensome” – AN 8.53. Read the descriptions once again and use your imagination to consider moments in your life when such principles were evident. What were you doing and how were you doing it? You may recognise that ‘attention and restraint’ has something to do with this process within your mind. You may also recognise that ease and tranquility are also present. The key question being, how can I live a life that is inclined towards developing these principles in my own mind? Ease and tranquility always follow in that eureka moment of correct understanding. THE TALBOT It’s December already, and Christmas is not far away now! Details of all our Christmas events can be found on our website: talbotcc.co.uk Speaking of Christmas, don’t forget we sell books and jigsaws in the foyer of the Talbot, a lot of which are in perfect condition, and ideal for stocking fillers. My wish list of small alterations to the Talbot is slowly coming to an end. We have recently added a new kitchenette, which will serve the three offices and Rees Hall situated at the rear of the Talbot. This means that groups holding meetings, functions etc can make themselves a cup of tea or coffee without disturbing our kitchen team working next door in Y Cegin Rees. Our last event for 2016 is on Friday 16th December when we have our normal bingo session and a party for all those who attend bingo. To close, it remains for me to wish all the readers of Seaside News, and particularly our members at the Talbot, a very merry Christmas, and a healthy and happy New Year. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Happy Christmas to you all! The guild has activities planned for this month but before that, can I tell you what has happened since my last report. Our October meeting was a craft afternoon arranged by Freda Rodger and her craft group. A very interesting and busy afternoon - we all learnt new skills. The Cardiff Federation decided to hold their annual luncheon in Porthcawl this year and very good it was too at the Atlantic Hotel. A lovely day so members from Cardiff Guilds were able to enjoy a walk on the front afterwards. We always like showing off our town at its best! We had our own monthly luncheon at Beale’s, always popular and also popular is our indoor games group. A busy committee meeting finalised arrangements for our Autumn Fayre next day in aid of Ty Hafan. This was successful and enjoyed by all, including the ambassador for Ty Hafan Lynda Francis and the Mayor and Mayoress. Our meeting this month is on December 14th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when we will be holding our Christmas party with entertainment from Mike Boyle. Do come along and join in with the carols - you will be very welcome and have a good tea! Dorothy Thomas, Tel: 772157
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The ‘Peaceable Kingdom’ where “The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them” as depicted by the Prophet Isaiah, often shows up in pictorial form on Christmas cards. Many people dismiss these images as the worst sort of seasonal romanticism. However, what Isaiah is describing are the kind of leaders God seeks, and the kind of ruler the Messiah shall be. God’s chosen do not judge by appearances, rather they “shall judge the poor with justice and defend the humble in the land with equity.” In other words, the standard for leadership is that a leader shall work to make the world, or a part of it, safer for the vulnerable, for the lambs and calves, for the poor and the children. This Christmas, hold in your heart Isaiah’s powerful vision for protection of the vulnerable, making the world safer for the least powerful and taming the lions so that the lambs have a chance to live. God bless you all this Christmas. Rev Lewis Rees Minister with Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

FEATURES BAVO RECOGNISES AND THANKS VOLUNTEERS
Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations recently held their annual Bridgend County Borough Volunteer Achievement Awards 2016 at the Heronston Hotel in Bridgend. Volunteers give up their time to make their community a better place, yet often receiving little, if any recognition for their commitment and energy. The awards are designed to recognise and honour outstanding people and organisations that have made a significant contribution to our community in the last year. Compèred by Lee Jukes from Bridge FM, special guests included Chris Elmore MP, Huw Irranca-Davies AM, Mayor and Mayoress of Bridgend County Borough Cllr Reg Jenkins and Teresa Jenkins, Mayor and Mayoress of Bridgend Town Cllr Rob Morgan and Nicole Rees, Cllr Huw David, Cllr Charles Smith, Cllr Ceri Reeves and Tenovus Cancer Care Choir. BAVO’s Chief Executive, Heidi Bennett said: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community, they give their time and skills selflessly to support others. It is fit and proper to recognise their contribution and the positive impact they have on people’s lives.” For full details visit the volunteering news section of www.bavo. org.uk or call 01656 810400. PORTHCAWL U3A The 82 activities listed for November (talks, outings and interest group meetings) all went smoothly and may well be outnumbered by the addition of Christmas extras, although there will be some ‘time off’ (for good conduct?) in December. Several groups plan performances and festive specials, especially Play Reading and Writing for Pleasure. The monthly talk is Doug Jones’s ‘Getting the Message - a History of Communication’, there is a trip to Kiss Me Kate, our annual carol Service and Christmas Lunch. The U3a is always grateful to the venues that make them so welcome, and now sad to say goodbye to the Glamorgan Holiday Home whose ever helpful staff deserve our good wishes. Andrew Collier
PORTHCAWL MUSEUM Trawling through old newspapers, I came across some interesting December events in Porthcawl’s history. The New Theatre Cardiff was opened on 6th December 1906. The first public performance was Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night performed by Mr. Herbert Beerbohm Tree’s Company, on 10th December 1906. On Friday 14th December 1906, the distinguished actor visited Porthcawl and played on the Porthcawl Golf Links, of which he expressed a high opinion. Miss Viola Tree, who was included in her father’s company, also spent the day at Porthcawl. Apart from three legitimate daughters, Beerbohm Tree fathered several illegitimate children; of which film director Carol Reed was one and actor Oliver Reed the son of another. Before midnight on Thursday 28th December 1893, a drunken brawl broke out in the town when the crew of an Irish schooner started fighting, which ended with windows of the newly built Esplanade Hotel, being smashed. The men, having paid for the damage, spent the night at Porthcawl Police Station. Events this December at the Museum, may not to be quite as raucous but will still be full of festive cheer. Also, don’t forget to post your letter to Santa. Santa’s Post Box is open until Saturday 17th December. Ceri Joseph

Well autumn has come and gone and it’s time to take stock of this year’s events. The signal box was very busy during August with many enthusiastic visitors attending. The BBQ was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions, but this improved in time for the vintage tea and hundred club draw. Groups are always welcome and the highlight of the year was probably the visit of the Bridgend Local History Society, who were able to visit the ironworks as well as Cefn Junction. However due to cut backs and health and safety issues The Gwyrdd is now fighting the same battle as it fought thirty three years ago... to ensure that this best example of a small ironworks in Britain is open to the public! Our Christmas programme starts 7pm on 17th December at Cefn Junction with our Christmas Box - an opportunity to sing carols and enjoy seasonal stories and poems in this unique atmosphere. Mon 19th December sees us carol singing around the western half of Cefn. Meet at Ty Isaf top at 6.30pm. January 2nd is the New Year Walk - meet at History Wall, Bedford Road at 10am. FEATURES DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH
DOUBT CAST ON DARK ENERGY
Here at Dogs Trust in Bridgend we have over 70 dogs looking for their forever homes, from little to large. If you would like to visit the centre we are open everyday except Wednesday from 12pm to 4pm. Our Dog of the month for December is Harriet, a 1 year old cross breed (pictured). She is a lovely girl, at first she can be a little worried meeting new people so will need slow introductions. Harriet will need to live with another dog in the home to help her build her confidence, give her time to settle in and live in an adult only home with no visiting children. If you can give Harriet the forever home she deserves please call us on 01656 725219 or visit our website, Thank you. Rhiannon Chamberlain
Five years ago, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three astronomers for their discovery, in the late 1990s, that the Universe is expanding at an accelerating pace. Their conclusions were based on analysis of supernovae - the spectacular explosions of dying stars - observed by the Hubble space telescope. It led to the widespread acceptance of the idea that the Universe is dominated by a mysterious substance named ‘dark energy’ that drives this accelerating expansion. Now, scientists at Oxford University have cast doubt on this standard cosmological concept. Making use of a vastly increased data set - a catalogue of 740 supernovae, more than ten times the original sample size - the researchers have found that the evidence for acceleration may be flimsier than previously thought, with the data being consistent with a constant rate of expansion. A more sophisticated theoretical framework accounting for the observation that the Universe is not exactly homogeneous and that its matter content may not behave as an ideal gas -- two key assumptions of standard cosmology -- may well be able to account for all observations without requiring dark energy. Indeed, vacuumenergy is something of which we have absolutely no understanding in fundamental theory. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

A ROTARY THANK YOU The Rotary Club of Porthcawl would like to thank the people in and around Porthcawl for all their support in 2016. In our appeals, you never cease to be generous and we have been able to help many local and international charities thanks to you. So, we would like to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope to see many of you in person during our busy Christmas period when we run our traditional Carolcade around the streets of Porthcawl - Father and Mother Christmas will, of course, have sweets for the children! Also, there will be a chance for everyone to come along to The Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church between 28th November and 5th December to see the fabulous, colourful trees and enjoy our week-long entertainment programme. We may even see you as our Rotary Posties deliver your Christmas cards with the 25p stamp on them (for details of where to buy the stamps and where to post them, please see last month’s issue). Lastly, we ho–ho–hope to see you near the Carolcade Sleigh at the Bandstand on 10th, 17th and 24th December for our Christmas Street Collection! Ivor Williams

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE LALESTON WI
SKER WI – CATWALK GLAMOUR!
Our November meeting was taken by President Dawn Storie, who welcomed everyone, including three visitors. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and agreed. All members were looking forward to our Christmas lunch at The Atlantic Hotel, Porthcawl on 6th December. Details of future events, a GFWI lunch and a GFWI Fashion show in 2017 were given. A ballot was held and two bursaries for courses at Denman College were awarded. The draw was made by Teg Lake and the lucky winners are Jane Lewis and Margaret Williams. Congratulations ladies. Thanks to our speaker, Donald Llewellyn, for stepping in at the last minute and entertaining us with slides and stories of his ‘life behind the camera’. Gwyneth Jenkins gave the vote of thanks. The raffle was won by Rosemary Dwyer and the competition by Barbara Rees. The Book Club, at Bridgend Library, will take place on 15th December. Our next meeting will be/was held on 1st December at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). It’s Christmas party time and the competition will be a ‘Christmas Adornment’. New members are always welcome, why not come and join us. For further information call Diane on 01656 656600. Dawn Storie
MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Our November meeting was, as always, in the Talbot Centre, Kenfig Hill, 2.30pm - with a good turnout of members. Marjorie and Enid our President and Secretary discussed WI business. Our Christmas party was finalised. Enid will do her Pass the Parcel - it always has us in stitches! Maureen has arranged for Mr Bill Bennett to entertain us during our party, which is a first. We are all looking forward to a great afternoon. Our walking club recently went to Margam Park for a walk, which was enjoyed by all. The Christmas Tree Festival is arranged and we hope members will attend at Margam Park, as it is a good day with lots to see and enjoy. Our talk this month was by Mr John Hanson and associate. Topic: Tools for Africa. The talk was very interesting. They have a local branch in Porthcawl staffed by volunteers and they will take all and everything you don’t want in your garden shed. Refurbish and repair old tools then send them to their headquarters in Southampton, to be shipped to Africa. The tools are for self reliance, not charity. It’s Christmas Party time - can’t wait! See you in the New Year. Christine Callaghan
PORTHCAWL WI We have enjoyed various talks and outings over the summer months and began autumn with a fascinating journey into ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ with Debra John. In October, we joined many WI’s to watch Artisan Bread Making in the village of Murton. We were made very welcome by the local WI and ate the best Leek & Potato soup in the world! In November, we enjoyed a super day at Labels in Ross-on-Wye, which ended in a Cream Tea at the Vale Resort. We have plans for an Anniversary Dinner this month and are arranging plenty of talks and trips for 2017. You are always welcome to join us at any time. We meet at All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on 01656 713124. Seaside News | 38
The glamour of the catwalk came to Nottage Village recently, when Sker WI hosted a fashion show in aid of the Save Denman Appeal. Sker WI members and visitors enjoyed outerwear, evening wear and nightwear from Bon March, Port Talbot Branch. Sker WI members modelled the collection and quickly perfected the art of the quick change! Proceeds from ticket sales and a raffle raised £250, which was greatly appreciated by the Glamorgan Federation Denman Representative who congratulated members on an enjoyable evening. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage, Porthcawl, 7pm. Visitors are always welcome so please come along and say hello! NEWTON WI The November meeting was well attended and presided over by President Jennifer Davies. The speaker for the evening was Deborah John, who gave a most interesting talk (in costume) as a Victorian Lady, explaining their various Christmas Traditions, from Christmas trees to carol singing, all very enlightening and enjoyable. We once again thank Anne Thomas for organizing the annual collection of the Samaritan Child Shoe Boxes, and thanks to all who contributed. During November we held a Fashion Show, with clothes provided by Roman Originals. Six members acted as models, showing off the beautiful outfits and every one enjoyed. Proceeds to go to the Denman Appeal. Thanks to Jennifer and Glenys for organising. Many of our members also attended the Federation Dinner at the High Tide, which was most successful. Our President laid a wreath at the Cenotaph on Armistice Day on behalf of Newton WI. For more Information please phone Jennifer on 01656 784715. M Freeman

Legal
Inheritance tax (IHT)
THE FUTURE OF DIVORCE AFTER BREXIT The vote to leave the EU has left the future of family law in a state of uncertainty. The changes will take at least two years to come into effect, so for couples getting divorced within this time frame, the laws will remain the same. But what could be the future of family law in the UK? A regulation known as “Brussels II” has been responsible for the ‘race to court’ phenomenon, which happens when a separating couple has the option of multiple courts to which they can take their divorce. For instance, an English couple living in France has the option of taking their divorce to either France or the UK. The first partner to file for divorce is the one who gets to choose in which country the divorce is then settled. The UK is arguably the most generous jurisdiction in the world for spousal maintenance. In the case of a divorce where there is a significant income difference, it benefits the spouse who earns less to file for divorce in the UK, where prenups are taken as guidelines rather than legally binding contracts, and vice versa for the spouse earning more. When article 50 is eventually triggered, the best thing the UK can hope for is that the courts will use it as a chance to modernise family law. The dissolution of the EU laws holding our legal system in place will leave family law open and vulnerable parties, such as domestic abuse victims or abducted children, exposed. Although the Hague Convention on international recovery of child support will step into place when Brussels II has gone, the UK must use the next two years wisely. Much hangs upon the wider decision of whether the UK still has free movement within the EU – something that is far from certain. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

Inheritance tax (IHT) is chargeable on your estate if it exceeds the IHT nil rate band (currently £325,000). Effective planning can substantially reduce the amount of tax that will be payable on your estate. If your estate is likely to exceed the nil rate band, it is worth investigating how family trusts and other planning options could benefit you. Inheritance tax is charged at 40% on the value of your estate in excess of the nil rate band. If your estate is valued at less than the nil rate band, IHT is not payable. Equally IHT is not payable on any inheritance you leave to your spouse. In addition, if your own estate does not use up the full nil rate band, your spouse’s tax free allowance will be proportionately increased. You can reduce IHT by giving away up to £3,000 a year and small gifts to other people of up to £250 each. Larger gifts can avoid IHT provided you survive at least seven years from the date of the gift. To qualify, you must not continue to benefit from the assets you have given away. Other IHT reliefs include reduced IHT on some business assets. Death benefits from most pension schemes are also exempt from IHT. Family trusts can provide extra flexibility to your IHT planning. For example, a family trust can be used to protect various assets passing to your children, or to help protect ownership of a family business. The tax treatment of family trusts is complex and depends on the type of family trust being used. A ‘bare trust’ set up by a grandparent allows income and capital gains to be taxed as the child’s – often meaning that no tax is payable once the child’s tax allowances are taken into account. By contrast, IHT may be payable on gifts into a family trust if the amount given exceeds the nil rate band, while income and capital gains made by the trust are also taxable. While gifts and family trusts can reduce the value of your estate (and consequently any IHT liability), always remember to retain enough for your own financial needs. The most effective IHT planning tends to be done early and takes a balanced approach to risk. For an initial no obligation meeting at our Porthcawl Office please contact the Estates and Trusts Team.

Finance WHY JUST RENEWING WITH YOUR CURRENT LENDER COULD BACKFIRE When you are coming to the end of your current mortgage deal, you have the choice of staying with the same lender, or taking a good hard look at what other lenders can now offer. Of course, you won’t want to be moving to a different lender just for the sake of it and yes, you should consider what the current lender is offering in terms of a fresh deal. If a competitive deal is offered at little cost to yourself, then that could make perfect sense. However, if a different lender offers a much better interest rate and offers you help with your costs (such as a free valuation and free legal fees) then you could be better off moving your mortgage borrowing elsewhere. Now, this is where it gets tricky because, if you’re an electrician for example, you’ll be great at wiring a house but you are highly unlikely to know what the whole of the mortgage market is offering. Only a mortgage broker will have that information at their disposal and can find the best deal for you. It’s the age old story isn’t it? – You couldn’t find the answer yourself so, let the expert do it for you, as he or she will have all the latest deals available to them on one of the mortgage industry’s specialist systems, which are simply not available to the public. And your bank would be no better, since it can only offer its’ own product range, which may not offer the best deal for you. Indeed, your current lender, whilst offering you a new deal, will be doingHalf-Page-Advert-CST.pdf so without the need to review current 1 your 15/09/2015 09:14
circumstances – circumstances which could have changed since you last looked at the mortgage. An experienced broker will be able to take account of all these issues and guide you to the best available solution. If the broker considers that you should stay with the current lender, he or she will tell you so. If you are coming to an end of your deal or will do so in the near future, or if you are on the lender’s Standard Variable Rate, talk to us now – you could be over-paying a lot of money per annum. Having a chat over a cuppa will help you get the right answer – you’ll be glad you did. Call 01656 782545. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545
BUY TO LET INVESTORS – BEWARE For quite some time, individual investors have sought refuge in buying property – believing it to be an asset class that is full of rewards. Is this still the case? Your buy to let portfolio may no longer be looking so shiny, tax relief on mortgage interest payments is being slashed from April 17, stamp duty is being increased by a further 3% and Capital gains from property is now being levied with an additional 8%. Add to this that all landlords need to comply with the Housing (Wales) Act 2014 by now, and the benefits to be gained are slowly disappearing.

If you consider not only the new amended Housing Act, the reduction of true profit in the form of increased taxation and combine this with those phone calls from a tenant to say that their boiler has broken down, or there is a leak from the roof – then it becomes a little bit of “more hassle than its worth”. At Bartholomew Hawkins, we are not only able to offer advice on reducing and sometime mitigating these tax charges, but also on an investment portfolio than offers greater diversity, less taxation issues and above all else less hassle for busy individual. This is what one of our clients has said about our service: “Ian spent time understanding our circumstances and goals and based on this provided comprehensive advice regarding the options available. These included new possibilities for my investments and retirement, which I had not previously considered. Ian explained the different financial options in a clear and understandable way. Additionally, he explored ways to minimise potential inheritance tax liabilities. As a result of Ian’s advice we have a more efficient investment portfolio and I have been able to significantly accelerate my retirement plans. Additionally, we now have more efficient arrangements in place regarding inheritance tax.” Ian Davies Bartholemew Hawkins Ltd 01656 347000

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
December is the winter month - we can expect the first frosts, so it follows that care is taken to protect the sensitive plants, with garden fleece, bubble wrap or a layer of mulch. The indoor bulbs that have been planted should be showing some progress now, ready for the finale of Christmas week. If you still haven’t planted the tulip bulbs, not too worry there is still time provided the ground is not frozen. Prune climbing roses, cut away diseased or damaged growth. We can leave faded flower heads of the hydrangeas until spring; they provide protection to the new buds further down the stem. At our October committee meeting we were all saddened by the resignation of our chairman Glan Hathaway, due to ill-health. Glan has been in the chair for 22 years and was one of the founder members. He has guided the club and members through, to what it is today. He will be missed. Well, it seems full steam ahead to Christmas, already parties are being planned presents packed or hidden away. There are many local events, concerts, etc -organised to remind us of the true spirit of Christmas. So enjoy. Gwen Bradford
It’s December and nobody asked if I was ready! (Poet Sarah Kaye) – I know the feeling! And to add to that it’s perfect digging time (yippee!). So winter frosts can break down newly turned clods. Digging is hard work and best staggered over a few sessions to save your back. Work in some matter from the compost heap and friendly little worms will redistribute it to improve the soil! Apples, pears and raspberries can be pruned now. Never prune stone fruit in the winter as the sap can draw in the fungus silver leaf –deadly stuff! When you’re setting up a fresh Christmas tree, remember they need water, they drink up to a gallon in 24 hours. It’s good to add lemonade to the water but be careful, don’t bump into it or you could end up with sticky presents! Did you know the colour of your Christmas Hyacinth has meaning: blue – peace and serenity, pink – sensitivity and love, yellow –happiness and friendship, purple – elegance and pride. I hope I get an orange one - it means satisfaction and passion! Why is Santa always so cheerful? Because he knows where all the bad girls live! Happy Christmas! Chris Early

Health COST OF CANCER As I write this there’s only 6 weeks until Christmas and I wonder if anyone has thought about the many thousands out there who are currently going through the treatment for Cancer and if they’re managing with finances ok? The reason I ask this is because at Cost of Cancer we are a charity that has been set up with these people in mind. Helping those, who for reasons beyond their control have had to come out of work to either go through treatment themselves or to look after loved ones. For many, this will mean struggling to pay everyday bills that must be paid no matter what their circumstances are. Gas, electric, water rates, phone bills etc. These bills are even harder to pay if you’re unable to work due to treatment for cancer and with winter upon us. If you are one of the many thousands of people who are struggling with any of the bills mentioned and you’re currently going through treatment for cancer, please do get in touch. Go to our website www.costofcancer.org.uk and email us. Each case will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence and we WILL NOT pass your details on to 3rd parties. Health 1047 MILES ON FOOT TO BEAT BLOOD CANCER
Mark Freeman, from Bridgend, recently completed an epic journey on foot around the perimeter of Wales to raise money for blood cancer charity Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research). Mark didn’t have any support team on the route, he did it completely on his own, carrying all of the gear he needed with him. He chose to support Bloodwise after his Dad passed away from Hodgkin lymphoma just a week before Christmas in 2013. The effects of his Dad’s death coupled with his own health issues saw Mark struggle for a long time, forcing him to leave his degree course in March 2015. He set himself this challenge as a way to get back on track and do something that his Dad would have enjoyed doing. His aim was to raise £1047 but so far he’s raised almost £2100. Rachael Davies, Regional Manager Wales for Bloodwise said: “this is an amazing challenge! To walk all that way completely unsupported is a massive feat and we really appreciate Mark fundraising for us as well as raising the profile of our charity along the way.” If you’d like to sponsor Mark you can do so by visiting https:// www.justgiving.com/fundraising/TrekkingaroundWales For more information about Bloodwise and how to get involved in activities in Wales please visit www.bloodwise.org. uk or call the office on 029 2167 6226.

SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING FOR LOCAL BRANCH FOR DIABETES UK
We raised £1480 for local branch of diabetes UK- type1derful. Type1derful provides support and activities to children and their families living with type 1 diabetes in Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot. ‘Maddi’s Glam n Glitter Dinner Dance’ is the second event of this nature. A smaller more local event following last year’s ball where we raised £18,000! 90 people gathered for the glitzy dinner at Bryntirion FC. Food was provided by Clever Chefs, also known locally as the Pickled Radish, who also sponsored the catering staff. Everyone was entertained by local band, The Story Goes, who also played at last year’s event and were very well received! A huge thank you goes to Caroline at Pencoed based Party House who provided stunning table centerpieces for the second year. Local businesses have been very generous in helping this year’s event be a success. It is also hoped that the events will continue to bring awareness to this often-misunderstood condition. Thank you to all everyone who donated, volunteered and attended the event. Emma Loyns
WAITROSE DROPPING GM SOYA FEED Waitrose’s meat, milk and eggs will no longer come from animals fed a genetically modified diet as the retailer is dropping GM soya feed on its farms in a huge blow to the controversial ‘Frankenfood’ technology. Critics of GM have hailed the decision as the ‘beginning of the end of the last large-scale use of GM crops in the UK’. Campaigners are now demanding that other stores follow suit. Most shoppers are in the dark about the fact that all the major supermarkets feed their farm animals a diet of GM soya and maize. Consumer research from the Food Standards Agency has found shoppers believe this information should be included on the packaging but successive governments and the supermarkets have refused to deliver clear, honest labeling. Waitrose is ditching GM soya imported from South America in favour of conventional soya from Europe and other protein sources. The company said: “Waitrose has become the first UK retailer to introduce responsibly sourced non-GM soya for animal feed from Europe, reducing its reliance upon South American supply.” All the major supermarkets effectively banned using GM ingredients in their own-label foods in 1999 in response to customer concerns about the impact on the environment and human health. Arts KENFIG HILL MALE VOICE CHOIR
STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
The choir has recently appeared in the highly successful Festival of Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall. This being the 25th Anniversary of the event, of which we have the honour of having the most appearances of any other choir with 13 in total. A wonderful weekend was had by the choir and supporters. More recently the Choir had the Autumn Festival of Song at the Cornelly Community Centre along with their two Junior Choirs, Da Capo and Crescendo, and a guest appearance by Harry Williams. The audience was very well entertained by the variety of the music which included some songs from the shows, traditional Welsh Hymns and some arrangements by our MD, Phil Juliff. The choir is now 90 strong, but new members are always welcome. Practice is Monday and Thursday, 7pm to 9pm at the Choral Suite, Greenacres Motel, North Cornelly. We guarantee you a welcome second to none and afterglows to match. Paul Burnell Tel: 07837 187274 email: pburnell@talktalk.net
I must thank everyone for my birthday wishes, party and prezzies. I even had a message off President-elect Donald Trump, saying “Don’t come to America!” With Xmas in full swing, there’s plenty of live music on offer, so go on the Porthcawl and Bridgend Gig Guide Facebook page. My old mate Jay Aston, originally from Cornelly and who had success in America with Gene Loves Jezebel, is doing a solo tour in the USA and he’s recording a new album early next year, so I hope to catch up with him soon. My song-writing partner of 30 years, Daley B, is over from Prague for a few pub gigs, so keep an eye out! 2017 will see more news on Bridgend’s Last Flight To Pluto, Those Damn Crows, Rebecca Hurn and Kenfig Hill’s own rock star - Jayce Lewis, on his new album and studio. There will be a big reunion concert by Shy Warrior, too. I’ll keep you all posted. Finally, to Mat and staff on this great magazine and all my friends, bands and venues who contact me with their news have a brill Xmas and a Happy New Year. ONE TIME ALIVE One Time Alive have released their new single ‘Round About Way’ ahead of their upcoming album. Porthcawl town three piece, One Time Alive prove that tenacity, honesty and ambition are still at the wheel. The band have released a promo track ‘Round About Way’ available for free download at their website listed below, from their new album ‘Five Star Vending Machine’. Set for release Dec 1st through Southcove Recordings. A direct and concise body of work, scribbled in a shed, this album strikes a chord within the current climate. The gritty follow up to their debut album Sugar Train, Five Star is an all-together heavier affair. This album may not settle any debates but it might start a few. One Time Alive will be doing a rare live show, supporting legendry Welsh rockers Son of Man, with special guest Deke Leonard, at the Earl Haig Memorial Club, Whitchurch Cardiff on December 9th, where they will be promoting their own incredible self-titled debut album ‘Son Of Man’ released on October 28th. All music available at the usual digital outlets (iTunes, Spotify, AmazonMp3 etc.) Physical distribution at SUSSED Porthcawl. Check out their webpage www.onetimealive.com for further information, free download of latest single and full playback of debut album Sugar Train.
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW With Christmas coming up, there’s been a lot of renewed interest in my series of local history films, especially ‘Ghosts of Glamorgan’, which is not surprising, since these dark evenings keep most of us indoors and make us more receptive to ghostly tales. Originally released in 2012 after six years in the making, I am reminded every time I watch it of the tremendous support that it had from the many talented local people who appeared in it and helped to make it a great success. I look ahead to 2017 and wonder what it will bring in the way of new film projects and I try, as always, to think of doing something a little bit different. Thanks are due to this magazine for helping to publicise my new whodunit novel, ‘The Tidal Road Mystery’ a couple of months ago, and to the residents of Porthcawl and surrounding area who purchased a copy of the paperback, or downloaded the ebook version. The response was so good, the book had to be reprinted in late October. And to all of those enthusiastic readers who have asked me the question, the answer is yes, there will be more cases for amateur sleuth Erwin Graham! MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR The choir is continuing to practise for the Christmas period. There are new pieces that the choir hasn’t sung before and for others pieces that they have either sung with the choir in the past or with previous choirs. These include Angels Sing Again, A New Day Will Dawn and Tua Bethlehem Dref. Our first concert took place at Broscastle Manor Care Home, a new venue for us. Thank you to everyone for making us welcome. Following on from this we will be holding our Christmas Concert in St David’s Church Hall on Saturday 10th December starting at 7pm. There will be two soloists as well as the choir singing. To get you into the Christmas spirit there will be mince pies, mulled wine and some audience participation with Christmas carols/ songs. Then the choir will once again be singing at Rhiwceiliog - a favourite of many of the choir members. Arts ART IN FOCUS This month I’m focusing on an individual artwork entitled ‘The Heavy Burden’ (c.1850-60), painted by one of the most controversial French nineteenth century artists, Honoré Daumier. Daumier was not only a painter, but a master caricaturist, sculpture, and printmaker. His production was prolific and his work offers commentary on the social and political life in France at this time. His work was so provocative that he did indeed spend time in prison for it. This piece is very typical of Daumier’s painting style. The woman and child are outlined by a very dark shadow and this use of dark sombre colours gives the whole scene an eerie feel and a sense that they are being pursued by darker forces. In this case, revolution, the government and poverty. Daumier was an advocate for women’s rights and this painting perfectly exemplifies his beliefs. Women, in this period, were now being forced to enter the workplace without any childcare provisions, meaning their children had to accompany them. Daumier believed this to be wrong and campaigned through his art to change this. For further insight into the work and ideology of this great artist please contact: josephinelewington@yahoo. co.uk Josephine Lewington MA
PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We had some great presentations last month and we also held our annual Dennis Lines Memorial Trophy Competition, where each member could enter up to four images, which could be digital images or prints. Dennis Russ judged the competition, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. It was a very close competition with five images/prints attaining the top mark of 20 points, but the eventual winner was Richard Craze with ‘Ford Sale’. Joint second place went to the others that scored 20 points: Geoffrey Baker for ‘Speed Trial’, David Jones for ‘Looks and Books’, Jeff Evans for ‘After the Storm’ and Ken Needs for ‘Bug Highrise’. Joint third place went to Geoffrey Baker for ‘Jay on a Log’ and Martyn Derbyshire for ‘Window Light’. Congratulations to Richard for winning the competition and a big thank you to all who participated for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds on 01656 772831 for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the North Cornelly Community Centre. Glyn Edmunds

THE PYLE AND KENFIG GOLF CLUB
The Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club Junior team recently finished their season in historic fashion. Following their successes this year in the Rhys Davies Trophy and the West Glamorgan final, they went to Builth Wells Golf Club to compete in the Welsh Inter Club Championship. Despite having an average age of just 13 and playing in an event open to Juniors of 18 and under, they emerged victorious as the 2016 Welsh Champions. This is the first time that the club has won this prestigious trophy. Well over thirty members made the journey to Mid Wales to support the team last Wednesday and they weren’t disappointed. The success was all the more incredible as it was achieved despite losing their Captain and Welsh International, Tom Peet, only six days before the event. He damaged his Fibula playing rugby for his school, but to his credit, still made the trip to support the team and made his way around the course all day on his crutches! So the team of six
OGMORE BY SEA & SOUTHERNDOWN SURF REPORT Mid November Sunday – the wind was in the NW and the surf was looking like a 2-3ft ground swell. Ogmore waves were spoilt by the NW wind, so I headed down the coast to Llantwit. The local crew were holding a surf comp there, so I filmed some surf action. Then, they asked me to film the presentation of prizes at the club house, where prizes were presented to the winners of the West Channel Coast Open that weekend. It was all a bit of fun for all ages on the day. It went to show how surfing communities, as they mature, can develop family orientated events which also introduces the very young surfers to the competition scene and to meet surfers who have been there and done it. Thus proving that not all us surfers are just beach bums! The film of the event will be linked to the Llantwit page on the tuskasurf.com website by the time this article is published. So log on to enjoy some slow motion action of the locals and eventual winner Cieran Hughes. David A Batten Tuskasurf.com Seaside News | 60
was made up of Tom’s younger brother, Sam Peet, Ioan Consitt, Emilie Lewis, her younger brother Brodi Lewis, Kieran Tantum and Sean David. The competition was played in medal format and they won by a cumulative margin of four shots from Mold Golf Club. Everyone played extremely well as shown by their scores. There was no doubt who the star of the show was, as Sean had a terrific gross score of 70, the best round of his life. He was then ably supported by the rest of the team as their nett scores were a 67 for Ioan, a 70 for Sam, Emilie had 66, Kieran a 68 and then last but certainly by no means least, Brodi, still only 10 years of age had a wonderful 64. What a moment when he fist pumped on the 18thafter holing what proved to be the winning putt, it was reminiscent of Seve Ballesteros when winning the British Open at St Andrews! The following day, the team played the final of the Glamorgan championship against The Vale Resort, at Royal Porthcawl. Perhaps unsurprisingly, after the emotion of the previous day, this proved just one step too far and despite a very close match for much of the morning, the Vale team emerged victorious, winning three and halving the other match. In order the results were: Ioan Consitt and Sam Peet halved Sean David and Kieran Tantum lost 3/2 Emilie Lewis and Brodi Lewis lost 5/4 Elliot Watkins and Matthew Morgan lost 4/3 The Junior team now have another great adventure to look forward to. In the Spring of next year, they will go to Spain or Portugal to represent Wales in the Home Internationals which are played abroad every year. These are truly wonderful times at the club, as the Junior Academy continues to grow, with more and more children attending our coaching sessions that take place every week and also the numbers joining the club are increasing as every week goes by. Also the new greens have been laid for our purposely built “Junior Academy Short Course,” next door to the Sandville. This will be open in the spring of next year and enable children, who play or just want to try the game, to come along and enjoy themselves. If you’re interested and want more details, please contact our club professional team of Dylan Williams and Huw Williams on 01656 783093.
PORTHCAWL RFC U8’S UPDATE The weather has continued to be kind to us, with no disruption to the matches at all. The boys continue to develop with the newer members getting up to speed with the game. The boys also continue to play as a team in every match, and although we encourage individuality we are getting them to use it for the greater good of the whole team. Tries are distributed amongst nearly every squad player, a true testament to their commitment. Recent results have seen the boys have some tougher matches,

which has challenged them: Porthcawl 23 tries v Nantyfyllon 5 tries; Porthcawl 13 tries v Valley Ravens 8 tries; Porthcawl 11 tries v Glynneath 7 tries; Porthcawl 10 tries v Skewen 7 tries. Due to the weather and clock change, we move to Trecco Bay for the winter for training (big thanks to Parkdean). This will ensure continued training all season regardless of conditions. With the season now over, we recently held our Annual Awards Evening at the High Tide to acknowledge those who have shone this year. Winners were as follows: Chairman’s Cup - David Davies; Nippers of the year - Callum Thomas & Grace Evans; Juniors of the year - Marcus Fish & Keely Barnes; Youth of the year - Tom Ellison & Megan Fish; Competitors of the year - Dan Perkins & Elin Jarman; Coaches Award -Kate Thomas; Rolf Plate - Andrew Barnes; Curly Cup -Suzanne Paddern; Viking Cup - The Atherton & Davies Families. Congratulations to all the winners, the voting was extremely close in many categories, and a huge well done to everyone who has put in the effort this season. Due to the onset of the winter weather, we have now stopped the Tuesday Evening and Sunday Afternoon training sessions until the spring, however the Friday Night training is still in full swing at Pyle Pool. Check our website: www.porthcawlifeguards. co.uk for more details. Also, another quick reminder to nominate us as your good cause at the local Co-ops - thanks to all those who already have done so.
