Response To Cat Protection Letter (Nov 2014 Issue)

Miss Teen Inspiration Bridgend

Dear Editor, I noticed the letter from Sandra Grindley in Seaside News last month and wanted to reply on behalf of the Cats Protection Bridgend Adoption Centre. Whilst I understand Sandra’s concerns, I just wanted to point out that Cats Protection is only permitted to raise funds to help the cats that are in our care, to encourage the neutering of all cats and kittens and to inform the public about the care of cats and kittens. This means we are not able to contribute towards vet fees for cats not in our care but Sandra could contact the People’s Dispensary of Sick Animals (PDSA) which can provide assistance with vet fees. In terms of possibly taking this cat in, it is a sad fact of life that there are many more cats being given up or abandoned then there are being adopted, which places a great pressure on a charity like ourselves. We are currently full to bursting looking after 130 unwanted cats and kittens, which means we are unable to help every cat immediately. As a result we have added the cat to our waiting list and if and when we have space we will contact Sandra to chat about what she’d like to do next. In the meantime I would also appeal to your readers to please contact us if they wish to adopt a cat, as it will help us to help more unwanted cats. Rather than being placed in cages, each of our cats is kept in heated cabins with outdoor runs and cared for by an excellent team of staff and volunteers. Our phone number is 01656 724396. “Hello everyone! My name is Megan Goldberger and I am competing in a beauty pageant for the title of Miss Teen Inspiration UK. Along with this I am trying to raise as much money as possible for a charity called “Ayla Mae’s Three Steps Forward.” Ayla Mae has a condition called spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. This condition means that Ayla will probably not be able to walk and will need constant care for the rest of her life. Her family are trying to raise £100,000 for an operation that could change her life. Without the help of my sponsors I would not be able to help this amazing girl so would like to thank Malc’s Café, Stardust Boutique and The Style Academy for giving me this opportunity. Re: Danger Quicksand (Nov 2014 issue) Dear Editor, I write in reply to your published letter on the November 2014 issue, from Rosalie Hopper. May I commend you for giving it so much prominence. Many years ago, my family visited my sister’s family – resident in St Austell, Cornwall. Walking along a beach, our youngest son (then aged 3) ran on ahead. Suddenly my sister shouted “stop him, there are quick sands over there!” By the time my husband reached our son he was waist deep in quick sand and laughing at what he thought was a huge joke. Still sinking, my husband, up to his knees in quick sand, managed to rescue him. There were no warning signs on that beach, as there are none on Newton Beach. During the summer months (May 1st – Sept 30th), other beaches in Porthcawl are banned for dogs. Many families with small children picnic on this beach at low tide. Park Street Allotment Bonfire Night

Dear Editor, On the evening of Wednesday the 12th of November my girlfriend and I went for a walk on Newton beach at around 4pm. I took my Frisbee - intending to throw it around a bit but it was too windy and cold for that, so we decided on a nice walk along the beach instead. I hid my frisbee underneath a rock at the bottom of the slipway fairly out of sight as I didn’t want to carry it the length of the beach. When I returned it was gone, if you picked it up for whatever reason I would be grateful for its return. It is easily identified by the spray painted underside with my initials on it. Dear Editor, We are a small (privately run) local community allotment in Kenfig Hill. Each year we hold a free BBQ, with a bonfire and fireworks evening for the local community. This year’s event was held on the 8th November. We were lucky enough to have had the help and support of local businesses, retailers and people from the community of Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Bridgend – with donations of money and food for the evening. Without these donations the event would not have taken place. Please can you thank, through the Seaside News, all the people, businesses and retailers that helped out. Delightful Porthcawl Dear Editor, We in Porthcawl are lucky and fortunate to be residents of such a beautiful seaside resort, having a stunning seafront with beautiful and colourful flower beds, together with spacious and wide promenades. The impressive Grand Pavilion and other fine buildings add to the attraction. The seafront is flanked on either side by two popular beaches – Sandy Bay and Rest Bay, together with the two quaint and adjoining villages of Nottage and Newton. A further bonus is that we are conveniently situated between two cities. The main shopping centre – John Street, has a high standard and varied selection of shops. It’s said that the shop ‘Bliss’ is the finest shop in the borough! Maybe we are a little too heavy with charity shops, but in their defense – they are of a good standard and are the most popular shops with visitors and locals. Well Street is worth a visit with its outstanding continental colourful shop fronts. We are well catered for with restaurants, cafes, pubs and hotels. The heartening news is that visitors to Porthcawl have increased by 11% this year. What will it be like in 10 years time! On a more general aspect, we are privileged and proud of our numerous volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes in support of the various organisations and sporting clubs in the town. Special praise for those who organise the fireworks, carnival and Christmas swim. They do a fantastic job. Equally, the people of Porthcawl are very generous in their charity donations. For the young at heart, a visit to the Fairground at Coney Beach would give all the excitement they need. It’s feasible that one of the boat owners in the harbour might organize short boat trips along the coast during the summer – which would be an enjoyable experience! We have a high standard of schools, doctors and dentists, plus a good environment in which to raise our children – which makes it a wonderful town. Anti Bullying Quiz A Big Success!

The end of the year is fast approaching and we have lots going on in our last few weeks. Firstly we are looking forward to Numeracy Week after the success of Literacy Week earlier in the year. Our pupils will be taking part in numerous maths related activities which will range from real life problems such as working out the cost of a dream holiday to finding the number of palindromic numbers on a hundred square. We will also be inviting parents in again to see all the amazing work we have been doing. After Numeracy Week we will be preparing for our Christmas productions. This year KS2 will be performing ‘Christmas Around The World’. The final performance will be in Gilgal Chapel on Tuesday 16th December at 6pm. The Foundation stage Nativity will be performed on Tuesday 16th December and Wednesday 17th December. On top of this we also have the return of the Christmas Fayre. This will take place on Friday 5th December at 3.15pm. There will be a wide range of activities and stalls with something for everyone! An online bullying quiz run by Bridgend say’s “End Bullying” has proved to be a big success! Young people from all across the Bridgend County area entered the quiz; which coincided with the projects Big Step Against Bullying walk back in July. Winners were announced last week on the projects Facebook page ‘bseb events’ and the picture shows some of the winners who attended a presentation at the Griffin Park Health & Wellbeing Centre in Porthcawl on Tuesday 28th October 2014. Cynffig Comprehensive News On Wednesday 15th October Brynteg took part in the annual “Diwrnod Shwmae Sumae!” day. The aim of the day was to celebrate our national language and Wales, and to remind us that the Welsh language belongs to everyone and can be used anywhere. Pupils and staff were encouraged to start every conversation through the medium of Welsh and to bring a Welsh theme into lessons regardless of the subject. Many pupils and staff took up the invite to wear a red or green jumper to school. The Welsh department also organised a lunchtime quiz, which was extremely well attended by lower school pupils. A ‘Bore Coffi Shwmae’ was held in both staff rooms and in the sixth form common room where staff and pupils could purchase tea, coffee and cakes, but only if they asked for them in Welsh! All profits raised went to Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice. This was the first time that Brynteg had participated in the event and hopefully next year it will be even bigger and better. Hello again. Although it seems almost impossible to believe that we are almost at the end of the year, my pleasure in Cynffig’s achievements never wanes, because the outcomes for our pupils make me so proud. Whether sporting (our Year 7, 8 and 9 Rugby and Netball teams have been particularly successful recently), cultural (the Twmpath was fantastic), musical (we’re rehearsing with more singers and instrumentalists than ever before) or academic, Cynffig pupils have certainly made the most of the past twelve months. Our new Year 7 are already showing every sign of achieving amazing things, our more able and talented pupils are being challenged and driven as never before, and our Senior Team are providing the maturity of support that is the hallmark of our Sixth Form. I was particularly proud of them in our community Remembrance Sunday commemorations, and the university applications, which so many of them are currently making, is testament to the ways in which they grow and thrive. Nottage Primary News

The school choir, led by Mrs Northcott, sang their hearts out at the Annual British Legion Concert in the Grand Pavilion on 7th November. Their last song, ‘Let There Be Peace On Earth’ was a fitting finale to the concert. Armistice Day saw the whole school assembled on the school yard paying their respects with a minutes silence. Father Craig led the prayer followed by Mr Gallagher playing the Last Post. Our Harvest Celebration, which was blessed by Father Craig, was a great success. The children brought in items of food, which were donated to the Bridgend Food Bank. Almost 250kg of food was collected which was enough to give 3 hearty meals to 67 needy individuals in our borough. The Book Fair visited school and once again Mrs Dickinson worked her magic, organising the week’s sale. Business was brisk as the children convinced mums and dads that Christmas was ‘ages away’ and that they did need that special book! 35 years of Children in Need – where does time go? As usual, the pupils of Nottage threw themselves into this worthy cause with total enthusiasm and commitment, raising a staggering £1,142.33. KM Townley Acting Head Teacher

St Clare’s News In November, we were very proud of Year 11 pupil Sophia Campion who was announced as the winner of a national competition titled ‘Cartooning the First World War’. Sophia’s entry was unveiled at a new exhibition in The Waterfront Museum, Swansea at a prestigious opening ceremony. We hope visitors will enjoy the artwork, and would like to congratulate Sophia on her achievement. St. Clare’s pupils and staff once again demonstrated their generosity by arranging numerous fundraising activities for BBC Children in Need. Pupils from Nursery through to 6th Form came to school dressed as Superheroes, and spent the day donating to the brilliant cause. Pupils from the Sixth Form organised ‘throw a sponge at a teacher’ while some of the braver boys offered to have their legs waxed. Over in the Prep School pupils brought in small change and put their coins all over a giant Pudsey Bear. A total of £1,171 was raised, and we would like to thank all parents, pupils and staff for their generosity. Class 4 hosted the assembly at our Harvest Festival Celebration. They have been researching the Sendacow project, and how third world countries suffer from food shortages. All the food offerings were donated to the local Food Bank. Reverend Duncan Walker led our assembly on Remembrance Day, and everyone wore poppies to show respect. For lunch the children enjoyed a wartime menu. Our PFA held a cake sale to raise much needed funds. They raised a wonderful £291.54! Thanks to Tesco who heard about it and turned up with cakes for us to sell. Charlie Murphy played rugby at Newton Primary, and we now have a netball team who represented Afon y Felin at Porthcawl Comprehensive. All our classes are now very competitive to win the cup for the best weekly attendance! Willows have the best attendance for the last Russell Skellern month. SCHOOLS Brynteg School Round-Up

World War II

Brynteg’s school production of Disney’s ‘Camp Rock’ held in the Grand Pavilion was an absolute triumph. The audience were treated to a spectacular show and clapped and sang along to the songs delivered by the talented youngsters on stage. All cast members were outstanding so ‘bravo’ to you all. We congratulate four of our younger pupils, members of the school’s Creative Writing Club, who had their poems published in the Young Writers publication ‘War of Words’. They are Year 8 pupils Abbie Matthews, Lizzie Dowdall, Kayleigh Granville and Dylan Thomas. Brynteg welcomed Councillor Huw David, Bridgend Mayor Mr Gary Thomas, Mayor’s Consort Kay Jenkins and several other dignitaries to the official opening of the new fitness suite in the upper school gymnasium. The equipment was joint funded by BCBC, Sport Wales and the school in a drive to encourage students, especially girls, to take more active roles in sport activities. The girls played an essential part in the decision making with regards to the new facilities now in place. The geography department held a ‘bag-packing’ session in Sainsbury’s in order to raise funds for next year’s sixth form expedition to Nepal. Also Year 12 geographers went on a field trip to Dale Fort in Pembrokeshire to carry out various investigations as part of their AS course. Once again Year 12 art students took part in the ‘Made in Roath’ festival in Cardiff where they exhibited their art work and participated in art workshops. This popular event is now an annual feature of the art programme on the Brynteg calendar. GCSE art students visited Cardiff Museum where they had a productive day out drawing the animal and art exhibits for their coursework portfolios. Sports news and results – Congratulations to Chloe Dyke and Meghanne Davies of Year 12 who have been selected to the Welsh Netball U17 long squad. Well done to Isobel Dodd for coming 1st in the South Wales Cross-country championships 2014. Zoe Ham came in 13th, Hollie Mullan was 11th and Molly Ridge came 162nd in the same event. They will now represent South Wales in Builth Wells. Finally there were some impressive performances in the ’Shelter Cymru’ School/Club Golf Championships at the Celtic Manor recently. Year 6 pupil’s from Pil Primary School marked Remembrance Day with a visit to 1940’s Swansea Bay Museum. While they were there they observed the two minute silence to remember those killed during conflict. Year 6 have been studying WWII this term and have learnt a great deal about life during the war. During the trip they had the opportunity to handle artefacts, dress up in clothes from the era and lots more. Sofie discovered, ‘When food was rationed people had to eat powdered food such as eggs and milk.’ ‘We got dressed up in clothes from WWII era,’ said Millie. Help And Support For Young Carers Merry Christmas, everyone! During this season of goodwill, please spare a thought for local children who act as carers for parents, grandparents and siblings with disabilities or health problems that they cannot manage alone. On average, two children in each class at every school in the county borough are young carers who regularly wash, feed or dress a loved one, do housework, cook, shop or help with medication. Many adults who care for family members struggle with the responsibilities, so imagine what it must be like for children who often have no support. That’s why the council is working with health, schools and the voluntary sector to meet with and listen to young carers, develop new ways of supporting them and raise awareness. Schools such as Brynteg are offering weekly drop-in support sessions, and we’re developing initiatives such as a young carer’s identity card, a young carer champion network and training sessions for pupils and school staff. Action For Children in Brackla also run regular support groups for older and younger carers, including trips and activities during the school holidays. Harry Grabbham, one of our Year 12 students successfully beat off competition from more than 400 applicants to secure a place as one of 24 young dancers/actors in Matthew Bourne’s production of ‘Lord of the Flies’ at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff. He took part in 7 performances from the 22nd to the 25th October in which he displayed his considerable talent. Harry showed determination and dedication attending 6 weeks of intensive rehearsals leading up to the performances. “Harry is an incredibly talented young actor with a very bright future ahead of him. News ‘Keepers’ Tell The Tales Of Local Beauty Spots If you go down to the woods, coast, or the local park this winter you’re sure of a big surprise as a number of wooden sculptures have been created at beauty spots around the county borough. You may have already seen the tall female figure at Kenfig National Nature Reserve, the hooded character overlooking Wilderness Lake Park, three frogs that have popped up at Frog Pond Wood in Pyle, or the boy standing on a sandcastle listening to a shell at Trecco Bay campsite. There are ten in total and they are the ‘Bridgend Nature Keepers’. Carved out of Welsh oak wood, each ‘Keeper’ has its own tale to tell, and once you find them, simply download the ‘Dare to Discover’ app for your phone or tablet to hear their story. The app has been produced by the council’s tourism team and contains an interactive guide to help people explore the county borough. The Keepers project began earlier this year at Bryngarw Country Park, where four interactive sculptures watch over the river, garden, woods and meadow areas, and has now been expanded thanks to funding from Capital Regional Tourism. Small Business Saturday Small Business Saturday on December 6 reminds all of us how important it is to support the shops and services provided in our town centres. It is no exaggeration to say that such businesses are now the life-blood of our high streets – whether they be fashion boutiques, deli’s, cafes, hairdressers or vintage shops. Another Rise In The Basic Pension I was pleased to see that the basic state pension will rise by at least £2.85 a week next year, thanks to the triple lock introduced by the Liberal Democrats in Government. It means 24,854 pensioners in the Bridgend area will benefit from an increase in their pension. This rise will bring the level of the state pension to at least £115.95. This is £18.30 more, each week, than in 2010 when the Liberal Democrats entered coalition. This means pensioners on the full basic state pension are £950 a year better off than they were under the last government. The triple lock delivers a pension rise of whichever is the greater of average earnings, inflation or 2.5%, meaning pensioners locally will see more money in their pockets. It ensures that pensioners are guaranteed the security of a steady rise in their pensions, allowing them to plan for their future and giving them dignity in their retirement. We have ensured that pensioners locally are never again subjected to the indignity of the 75p rise they saw during one year under the last Labour Government. As another year draws to a close in Bridgend County Borough, I hope that your preparations for the festive season are going well. The weather last Christmas was very mild, but if it takes a turn for the worse this year, our council website has a ‘get ready for winter’ page that provides information on services and issues such as school closures, gritting and kerbside collections. I’d like to remind you about recycling and refuse collection arrangements over the festive season. Christmas Eve will be normal, but the Christmas Day and Boxing Day collections will take place on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th December instead. Waste normally collected on New Year’s Day will also be a day later, so the normal collection for Friday 2 January will move to Saturday 3 January. Back in September you may have heard that the Welsh Government’s National High Street Campaign was launched which aims to remind everyone of the value of our high streets such as John Street in Porthcawl, encouraging members of the community to make full use of them. I was pleased to hear of Walters’ Shoes’ 100 years on the high street a few weeks ago. It is a local family run shop that has lasted the test of time, serving the wants and needs of the community. I always enjoy spending a few hours in John Street, one of Wales’ thriving high streets with a handful of small business such as the lovely deli Home & Colonial, interesting boutiques like Bliss and Koko as well as so many pleasant cafes to enjoy a spot of lunch. I was delighted to hear that the museum will continue to stay open despite uncertainty over the past year, which is currently hosting a brilliant exhibition about the First World War. I hope and believe that the grant of £50,000 from the Welsh Government’s Town Centre Partnership fund for Porthcawl will ensure the town continues to draw more and more people to Porthcawl every year.

Investing In The Health Service Will Save Defending It Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board’s annual budget for 2013-14 makes for some very sobering reading. On the back of the LHB’s annus horribilis, which saw it come under unprecedented scrutiny from both government and media as patients and their families’ complaints reached new levels, it now appears that the board has spent in excess of £100m defending itself. The biggest part of the spend - £93.587 million – went on clinical negligence. This was followed by £6.687 million on personal injury and £4.767 million on defence legal fees making a total of £105.041 million. This is an extraordinary amount of money by anyone’s reckoning and, given the litany of management failures found within Professor June Andrews’ report into care at the Princess of Wales and Neath Port Talbot hospitals, it has to be asked how better the money could have been spent if it had been invested in better care, in the shape of more staff and more equipment and beds. The Welsh NHS spends far too much time in firefighting rather than in preventative mode. News Porthcawl Town Council News A couple of years ago Porthcawl Town Council agreed to grant a sum of £30,000 towards Porthcawl Athletic Association’s new pavilion. The Town Council is extremely pleased to see that the project is now well underway with the grant money being utilised to support the construction of the new building. The enthusiasm of the members of Porthcawl Athletic Association is great to see. Hopefully the project should be completed soon! I’m sure that many of you will have noticed that there is a new pedestrian crossing on Fulmar Road. The crossing was funded by Porthcawl Town Council. It provides a safe path across Fulmar Road, which can become extremely busy, especially during the nice weather! It is used by a variety of people and is a great addition to safety in the area. Have You Seen These Benches? The Black Country Museum in Dudley specialise in the history of Victorian cast iron serpent benches that represent the Greek god of health which were enormously popular in seaside resorts from the 1860’s. Few survived the metal shortages of two world wars; however some farsighted Borough managers valued their benches as seen in the beautiful Valley Gardens Harrogate and Aberystwyth seafront where they surround the promenade, as they once did in Porthcawl. Unfortunately for Porthcawl, BCBC seem to have little interest in the town’s Victorian heritage as the two serpent benches they replaced on Locks Common demonstrates. We made BCBC aware of the historical importance of these 130 year old icons, sought assurances for their safety and refurbishment and met officers to discuss their return. However the unedifying news from BCBC is that they have “LOST” both at their Bridgend Waterton Highway stores. Does “LOST” mean misappropriated, stolen or what? Their 2013 press statement said one was lost but the other would definitely be reinstalled. Incredibly BCBC say they keep no records of goods deposited or who is responsible for them and think nothing is to be gained pursuing this further. FEATURES Books For Christmas As this is my last piece for the Seaside News I would like to thank Mat Hardwicke for publishing an excellent magazine and for allowing me space in the magazine to produce my articles. In closing I would like to draw your attention to two books. The first, Making Movies, a detective story written by myself, is set in Porthcawl and Cardiff in 1978. The plot centres on a teenage runaway from Nottage and her involvement with some shady Dutch characters. This novel follows on from Blind Justice and a third story in the series will follow next year. The second book I’d like to mention is Sam’s Song, written by Hannah Howe. This is a contemporary detective novel set in Cardiff. The story centres on Sam (Samantha) and her attempts to come to terms with her violent past and look forward to a brighter future. Although the subject matter, domestic violence, is dark, the book does contain plenty of humour with some laugh-out-loud moments. There is also a strong mystery element to the story centred on the music business and murder. Both books are available from all good bookstores and internet outlets, and on Kindle. Through Christian Eyes A recent survey said more people now believe in aliens from outer space than believe in God. I find this strange as no one yet has any strong evidence for visitors from outer space. Meanwhile, there is strong evidence that God came to earth in Jesus Christ. The birth of Jesus was a miracle only partly understood by the scientific process of parthenogenesis. His life was accompanied by miracles, signs and wonders that amazed those around him. His character was unique in its moral and ethical qualities, and even death on a cross could not destroy him, as three days later people saw Jesus alive. They touched Him, talked to Him and shared food with Him proving his resurrection was true. One of the eyewitnesses of God in Jesus Christ was the apostle John, he wrote, ‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14) The Bible says ‘They will call him Immanuel – which means “God with us”’ (Matthew 1:23). FEATURES Inner Wheel News The Chairman of District 15, Mrs Catrin Rowlands, attended the November meeting of the club. Catrin spoke of her love of music and how helpful music can be to special needs children. Her chosen charity is UCAN Productions, which offers opportunities for visually impaired young people to participate in the performing arts. President Gill presented the District Chairman with a cheque for her charity. Mrs Jean Hughes, a new member, was inducted by the District Chairman and welcomed into Inner Wheel. Our Annual Christmas Fayre was held in the Atlantic Hotel on November 5th. It was a well attended, enjoyable, and successful event. Two outings have been arranged before Christmas - a shopping trip to Gloucester and a visit to Cardiff to see The Lion King. The club will participate in the Christmas Tree Festival to be held in All Saints Church from the 2nd to the 7th of December. Barbara Bridge held a knitting group in her home in October and another is planned for November. Members attended the Remembrance Day Service at All Saints Church, and a wreath from Inner Wheel was placed at the War Memorial. Eileen Thomas, Club Correspondent

First-Time Puppy Walker Sandra Corben PUPPY walking for Guide Dogs was something my late husband and I always planned to do. We loved dogs, having owned golden retrievers for 30 years. In March, beautiful Berry came into my life, aged eight weeks, and she’ll stay until spring. When the time comes, I know it won’t be easy handing her back to Guide Dogs. But it will be a positive goodbye as she goes on to better things. Through puppy walking, I have made a new group of friends. We meet with our pups and let them enjoy free running time together. When I’m out, people are friendly and want to know more about Berry, and Guide Dogs generally. It’s my job to introduce Berry to as many new sights and sounds as possible. It’s good to include the puppy in your daily routine, visiting shops and garden centres, doing the school run, going on public transport and joining in family days. There’s great support from Guide Dogs staff, plus puppy training classes for exchanging tips and ideas. Puppy walking is just the challenge I needed. Will I do it again after Berry goes? You bet! Y Cefn Gwyrdd News Heard of the Railway Ramblers? Well I hadn’t until I received a call from Phil from Bolton. This British-wide rambling group follows disused railways and last week they walked from Tondu to Pyle station via Cefn Junction - where they enjoyed tea and refreshments away from torrential rain. The group was amazed at the remnants of our industrial past and their faces when they entered Bedford’s ironwork at Waun Cimla was a picture. They could not believe that this best preserved complete small ironworks in Britain was not part of a tourist trail. Diary Dates - on Tuesday 9th December the Gwyrdd is organising a concert entitled A Child’s Christmas at Cefn’s Green Hall. Supported for the fourth year by the Night Out Scheme and Bridgend Council, Lighthouse Theatre will perform works by Dylan Thomas and Richard Burton, ably supported by the local talent of the village! Retired Bridgend health visitor Deana Owen thought she would spend her retirement gardening, but after three months volunteering in Monze, a small town in Zambia, she decided to build a school there instead! “The school there was like a dilapidated cow shed yet every day 300 children - half of them HIV orphans - walked miles to get there to be educated. They are so keen to learn, and happy, despite having nothing but a ball made out of old plastic bags to play with. I was asked to help – how could I say no? My friends helped me set up a registered charity. Already we have installed a solar water pump to irrigate vegetables, and have bought a peanut butter machine. But the big project is building a school with compost toilets and sinking a borehole for water. We have already begun work, so these children can not only be educated but will be nourished and learn life skills to feed their families in the future.” Deana would love to talk to your organisation or to hear from people able to help in any way. Porthcawl Townswomens’ Guild News As I write this Christmas is definitely in the air! We are looking forward to Christmas lunches at Bridgend College and with the South Wales Federation in Cardiff. Unlike many people I don’t get tired of turkey and all the trimmings. After our Autumn Fayre last month we have invited the Alzheimers Society to our December meeting to receive a cheque for £650. The Guild took part as usual laying a wreath on Armistice Sunday - especially moving this year with the 100 year commemoration of the start of World War One. Last months meeting was a crafts demonstration afternoon put on by members of our craft group led by Freda Rodger. A good afternoon, even I managed to make things and I now know what tea bag folding is! This month we will be holding our Christmas party with entertainment from the Gilgal Baptist Church Bell Ringers. Followed by our usual splendid tea - visitors welcome. Life With Porthcawl Lions Porthcawl Lions are very sad to report the death, after a short illness, of one of its members, Lynn Williams. Lynn was a wellliked and hard working member of the club and will be greatly missed. The thoughts and sympathy of all members are with his family at this time. By now, hopefully, Santa’s grotto is open every Saturday from 10am in the Y Centre, and the Sunday car boot sales at the HiTide are enjoying better weather. Don’t forget about the Boxing Day Fun Run starting and finishing at the Hi-Tide. It is suitable for serious runners, joggers or walkers of all ages and the perfect way to work off the excesses of Christmas Day. Registration is from 9.30 to 10.30am for an 11 o’clock start and the entrance fee is £5 for adults and £1 for under 18’s with all money going to charity. FEATURES The Hope Church Community Project, Porthcawl Our opening day on October 17th, was a great success and opened by Madeleine Moon MP who has supported us from the beginning. Many attended in support and we had a great afternoon with food supplied by the Globe. Also the Porthcawl Male Voice Choir kindly came to sing for us! We look towards 2015, working with the community and volunteers to help with the youth/ elderly who need a safe place to go during the winter months away from the streets! Our community hall is now up and running and is available for hire and is ready for any business classes, teaching classes or activities in the community, hire details are available from the information below. Thank you to our builder, and some of the community that donated and helped with the restoration of the church, but we still have a way to go. Talbot Centre News Kenfig Hill’s Talbot Community Centre has finally acquired the adjacent building, known locally as the Rees Centre. Eighteen months ago, the management of Scope, a national charity who looks after people with disabilities, offered to gift the building to the Talbot, and finally, a couple of weeks ago, the keys were handed over. The Rees Centre will become part of the Talbot Community Centre but will require substantial work to convert and combine a building purposely designed for the disabled to a single community centre for use by all local people. It will enable the Talbot Community Centre to accommodate many and various groups and activities to the benefit of the local area while still providing a facility for Scope to continue its excellent work. The Talbot will now have more office space and an extra hall, to be named the Rees Hall, after Mrs Hilda Rees from Porthcawl, who built the Rees Centre in the sixties. Tools For Africa The season of advent prior to Christmas is a journey, so our last consignment started its journey last week. The loaded pallet destined for Malawi and crates consisted of kits for building trades, carpentry workshops and motor repair businesses, some two hundred and seventy seven tools, two arc welders, sewing machines and haberdashery. The consignment was paid for by members and organisations associated with Trinity Church, Porthcawl. Prior to a project beginning, all potential trainees are interviewed and one question we ask our trainees is, “What is the benefit of training and tools to you?” Eva of Eva Tailoring Tanzania says, “Both are needed – tools and knowledge. If I had just got the machines and no training I would not know how to look after and repair them and would not have learned how to look after the business.” Agness Bwembya says “I do not want my children to suffer; this is my chance to improve their lives. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Newton WI News Our November meeting commenced with the usual WI discussed and minutes approved. The guest speaker was an American Lady called Polly, who gave a very interesting talk on the American ‘Thanks Giving Day’ celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. This event originates from the ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ first harvest in the New World in 1621. December is a busy month in the Newton WI calendar, starting this year with the ‘Tree Festivals’ at All Saints Church from the 1st December for one week, and also at Margam Park Orangery on the 3rd December - one day only. At both these events Newton WI trees are decorated by our talented ‘craft ladies’, a visit is highly recommended. The December meeting will include our Carol Service officiated by the Rev. Colin Richards, and afterwards tea/coffee and mince pies will be served. Our Christmas Lunch will be held on the 5th December at the Coed y Mwstwr Hotel, which everyone is greatly looking forward to. Mynydd Cynffig WI The 11th November was our monthly WI meeting held in the Talbot Community Centre, Kenfig Hill. We had a good turnout of members - some must have come by boat, the rain was relentless. Our meeting was chaired by Marjorie (our president), and the minutes read out by Enid (our secretary). Christmas is a busy time and being in the WI is no different. A Christmas Tree Festival in Margam Orangery, Christmas trip to Abby Cwm Hir, our Christmas party, Marjorie hosting a Coffee and Mince pie morning - we don’t stop. Next year is just as busy - a flower demonstration in Port Talbot, guided walk in Bristol, taste of Wales in Llanharry and a service in Llandaff Cathedral. Also, next year is the 65th Anniversary of our WI and also the 100th anniversary of the National Federation, so we shall all be hard at it enjoying ourselves. Our guest speaker was Sally Maybey - her topic “My Mastermind Experience” which was entertaining, to have been asked twice to appear is a feat in its self. A vote of thanks was given by Eirwen our treasurer, followed by tea and biscuits. Our December meeting is our Christmas Party. Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Christine Callaghan

Kenfig WI News Our latest meeting took place at Cornelly Methodist Hall on 3rd November. After the completion of formal business, members were treated to a presentation from our speaker Erna Cachae who gave an interesting talk on Pearls. The history of pearls is extensive dating back to the 7th century when they were only worn by royalty and the very rich. Many of the early pearl divers lost their lives in their search for the pearls - making the gems expensive and scarce, but nowadays they no longer dive in the dangerous waters as most pearls are cultured. It was fascinating to see pictures of the many types and beautiful colours of these jewels. Following the presentation, members were given the opportunity to have their own pearls valued. It was indeed an enjoyable evening. For those who have not yet penciled in the date - please join us for our annual Christmas Concert to be held at Cornelly Community Centre, 7pm on Tuesday 9th December. The November meeting of Laleston WI was opened by president Margaret Aylen, who welcomed the members and the minutes were read out by secretary Diane Marshall. The business of the evening included arrangements for the Luncheon Club at Poco Poco, Bridgend and the Book Club at Bridgend Library. Menu choices were taken for the Christmas Lunch at the Mason’s Arms, Bryncethin on December 9th. The speaker - Mrs Ann Mahoney, was thanked for standing in at short notice when the original speaker was unable to attend. The members were very impressed with Ann’s demonstration of serviette folding and were encouraged to have a go themselves. They went home with their samples of Mitres, Crowns, Fleur-delis, Sailing boats and many more designs – their Christmas tables

The November meeting of Sker WI was held recently. The charity evening was enjoyed by all, with Caryl Thomas telling amusing stories about the time she and her husband entered Ballroom Dancing competitions. Caryl showed us some of the dresses she wore which were amazing. Members also enjoyed some wine and nibbles. The speaker for the monthly meeting was Mr Stephanos Mastoris who gave a very interesting talk on the History of Christmas Cards, which first appeared in 1843. Stephanos showed how the cards had changed over the years, with those in the 1880’s being more elaborate. During the 1950’s charities started to sell them. Since computers have been used there has been a drop in the number of cards bought but still millions are sent every year. There is a varied programme to look forward to with our Christmas Fayre coming soon and also a trip to the theatre to see “White Christmas” followed by a meal afterwards. The next meeting is “Party Time” on 11th December at 6.30pm at St David’s Hall, Nottage. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

Finance New Intestacy Rules & Christmas Swim As financial planners, we at One Life Financial Planning Ltd aim to ensure that our clients are made fully aware of all issues that may affect them or their families. Recent changes to Intestacy Rules are an example. Radical Rule Changes: From 1 October 2014, the Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act 2014 significantly alters the way in which the assets of people who die intestate are shared among their relatives. The biggest change will affect married couples or registered civil partnerships where there are no children. Life Interest Concept Abolished: Under the new rules, the life interest concept has been abolished with the surviving married partner receiving the first £250,000 and also half of any remainder. The children will receive half of anything above £250,000 and will have to wait until they are 18 to access any funds. Distributing Assets Tax-Efficiently: The changes therefore highlight again how important it is to make a Will to ensure that your wishes are followed and that your assets are distributed tax-efficiently. Bird Watch: Sparrowhawk

Nearly Christmas, lots of lovely food! All those freshly frozen (veg) from the summer but don’t eat too much as there is still work to be done in the garden! It’s digging and compost spreading month, winter frosts help break down newly turned clods. But digging heavy ground is hard work, best staggered over a few sessions to save your back. In the vegetable garden the spread contents of the compost heap will be distributed by our friendly little worms to improve soil consistency. Cut down tall rose bushes by half to prevent wind rock, the branches catch the wind like a sail and can loosen the plant. Clean moss and lichen from paths as this is treacherous in wet weather (very slippery indeed) using a solution of household bleach will get the job done, just water it on, leave a few minutes then scrub it off – easy! Try leaving the faded heads on your hydrangeas, they will provide frost protection to the swelling buds further down the stem. Did you know – Norwegian scientists reckon that Rudolf’s red nose is probably due to a parasitic infection! Definition of a seed catalogue – a work of fiction with fantasy photographs! The Sparrowhawk is one of our most familiar birds of prey, and is the one most likely to visit your garden. The male has a slate grey back and orange brown bars, on a white underside. The female, which can be 25% bigger, has black bars and a dark greybrown back. This hunter relies on an element of surprise to catch its prey and will often follow a regular route through a garden, so it is possible to tip the balance in favour of smaller birds. Firstly, position your feeders and bird table close to cover so that the birds have somewhere to dive into should danger arise. Secondly, move your feeders around regularly as this will make it more difficult for the Sparrowhawk to predict where the birds will be feeding. The Welsh name is Gwalch Glas. Why might a Cross Option be needed? The death of a shareholder can have a major impact on any business, particularly where the company has not made plans for such an event. Shareholders may also have concerns for the welfare of beneficiaries in the event of death since beneficiaries’ interests may not align with those of the surviving shareholders, particularly where such beneficiaries lack business experience. The company will be under no obligation to provide beneficiaries with benefits and regardless of assurances fellow shareholders provide one another that beneficiaries will be looked after, if the shareholders have not made formal provisions then the worst can happen. Further, the surviving shareholders run the risk of shares passing to someone with no interest in the company or even to another company that might then be in a position to make a takeover bid. It’s common for existing shareholders to want to buy the deceased’s shares and keep control of their company but very few will have the right amount of cash available at the right time. What is a Cross Option Agreement? The principles are simple: each shareholder agrees that upon his death his fellow shareholders have the option to buy his shares (and sometimes those of his spouse) usually at market value (‘a call option’) and that his personal representatives have the option to sell his shares (and sometimes those of his spouse) to the continuing shareholders (‘a put option.’) Where does the money come from? Some businesses may turn to their bankers seeking funds to purchase the deceased shareholder’s shares but many will have existing loans that would rule out further advances and, further, a crisis such as the death of a senior colleague can create uncertainty and make banks reluctant to lend. Cross options give the surviving shareholders the option to buy the deceased shareholder’s shares and give his personal representatives the option to sell those shares to the continuing shareholders, the purchase price being funded by life assurance policies taken out by the shareholders and held in trust for the other shareholders to pay for the deceased’s shares under the put and call options.

I absolutely love the Autumn Rugby Internationals. What a game and what an occasion! I am sure after watching the match, you and friends have sat and analysed the game from various perspectives. After watching the frantic display of electrifying pace, you probably came to the same conclusion as I have. The spectacle of rugby wasn’t a true representation of the score line. Mind boggling. The constructs that we measure such as missed tackles, running speed, passes dropped etc only give an indication of what actually happened in the flow of that great game. The flow we call the ‘truth’. We love to argue about ‘truth’. That same principle is exactly what meditation is all about. Yes – you have all the constructs that fall around this misrepresented theme. Pictures of people chanting; fingers together doing ‘OM’. Be under no illusions, that is not meditation. What you’re seeing is the constructs of meditation. The meditator is exactly the same as you. Watching the flow, watching the change. You call it rugby. The meditator calls it life. What is interesting is how we constantly assume that by controlling all the variables, this will lead to us winning. Those bloody Australians still seem to beat us! Arsenic may be something you think you last encountered in an Agatha Christie plot, but, in fact, the deadly poison can be found all around us, including on our plates. A Channel 4 Dispatches investigation has revealed that many popular rice products — including Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, Cheerios and some baby food may contain potentially dangerous levels of the contaminant. This is because rice is grown in flooded conditions in countries such as India and Bangladesh. The water causes the arsenic that is usually locked up in the soil to be released and this is then absorbed in the rice. While there are strict regulations for levels of arsenic in drinking water, there are none for food. And though levels in rice aren’t toxic in the short term, no research on longtern exposure has been done. The best variety of rice to choose is basmati, which absorbs less arsenic from the soil. It is also possible to remove 80 per cent of arsenic from rice in the cooking process. The key is to rinse thoroughly before cooking, to boil it in the largest volume of water possible (which allows the poison to leach out) and to rinse it again in boiling water after cooking. Scarily, however, arsenic is not the only poison being served up in our homes. Heavy metals ranging from lead to mercury can be found in many of our favourite foods. Porthcawl’s such beautiful place, For it sits just by the sea. And when the sun is shining, You will see exactly what I mean. The town has so much history, From years that have gone bye. Buildings that once stood tall, Slowly decade and died. The promenade it is so beautiful, A wonder just to see. As you walk along it you will get, A whiff of the mighty sea. The beaches are so wonderful, From Newton to Rest Bay. If you have never been to these places, Then I suggest that you visit them one day. Porthcawl has a Pavillion That gathers in the crowds, With shows that will leave you applauding, And also laughing out loud. The fair is also an attraction That has been here for many years. It has bought in many a tourist. Leaving with candy floss up to their ears. The doughnut shop is to die for, The best in Wales some would say. You always ask what’s the secret ingredient is and the owner tells you, That if you come back he will tell you another day. With Newton Church still standing, Built in the 11th century, Its image alone is so prominent To Porthcawl’s history. So what does Porthcawl mean to me? To me it means a lot. The Good Old Day’s

Cariad, do you remember,1958, that September. We’d travel to Barry or Porthcawl, along sandy beaches, kicking a ball. Stop for an ice cream along the way, we were so happy, out for the day. We’d search in the rocks on Rest bay for crabs, then in the pools for little dabs. We’d laze on the beach for hours and hours, making sand castles decorated with flowers. Then to the dunes where we’d put on our cosies, chase in the surf, little care or worries. Shiver and shake under a towel, then a cup of broth, to us that’s cawl. Then Mam and Tad would call us over, time to go home now kids, our day out’s over. Until next year when summers hot, but for now, it’s back to Splott. In the back of the car we’d sing out loud, bye bye seaside we’ll be back we vowed. Back to Splott still on a high, we’d stop at the caf, and have a Clarks pie. Those day’s were great with you as a mate, I often wondered looking back to ask for a date. Arts Porthcawl Male Choir News

Cor Bro Ogwr Christmas Concert

The Porthcawl Male Choir has continued to be busy since their return from Penzance. They were present at the reopening of the ‘Hope Chapel’ in Porthcawl where they entertained the guests with a short medley of songs. It was nice to see the result of all the renovation work that had taken place. The Choir was then invited to be part of Porthcawl chorister Vivian Griffiths’ ‘Perfect Day’ video production. The Choir was filmed at the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl and on the seafront outside the ‘High Tide’ sing as part of Viv’s Perfect day. We look forward to watching the completed film. The Choir was also very pleased to open the Porthcawl Royal British Legion Concert - Drumhead Service at the Grand Pavilion on Friday 7th November and to sing with the audience during the Drumhead Service. And as always the Choir took part in the Remembrance Service at All Saints Church on Sunday the 9th November. The Church was packed full. Ray Street, Secretary Porthcawl Male Choir

Put the date in your diary now for a ‘magnificent’ evening of music to start the festive season. Cor Bro Ogwr’s answer to Gareth Malone - new conductor Nick Bromilow, has been cracking the choral whip as we prepare for our concert. This will be his first concert with Cor Bro Ogwr, so we are keen to see a full house on the night. It’s a varied programme, showcasing the versatility of the choir in tackling challenging choral pieces - in this case, John Rutter’s ‘Magnificat’ - but also enjoying Christmas carols, some old, some new, some Welsh, and excerpts from Handel’s ‘Messiah.’ The programme contains something for all tastes. The orchestra will be The British Sinfonietta, with whom the choir has developed an excellent working relationship. Our soprano soloist is Jessica Robinson and our accompanist is Glenn Crooks, who will be performing in his own concert in January, together with our conductor Nick who will be playing the French Horn. And Then There Were Twelve The Dutch city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch has shown eternal gratitude to the 53rd Welsh Division which relieved it from German occupation exactly 70 years ago. The action was not without cost as 146 British servicemen lost their lives in the assault, plus many more were wounded. Each year, the City has invited surviving liberators to attend its Commemoration at its Welsh Memorial. The passing of time has seen survivors reduce to twelve in number, all of whom were present this week aged between 89 and 98 years young. Liberators and their fallen colleagues are revered in this lovely city and in their presence, Bridgend Male Choir, was humbled as were principal guests Sir Geoffrey Adams (British Ambassador); Jane Hutt (Welsh Assembly Minister); Cllr Margaret Jones (Lord Mayor of Cardiff) and representatives of the Armed Services & host city.

The singing part of the Tour was a huge success, with an 800 seat sell out concert at the Jheronimus Bosch Centre; “a capella” performance at St. Jan’s Cathedral; social performance at the De Taling Nursing Home; commemorative singing of Mansions of the Lord and Hen Wlad Fy’n Hadau at the Menin Gate, Ypres and any amount of impromptu tunes at various venues. Well, it’s that time of the year again and my tree’s already up. I see Porthcawl Town Council wanted a famous celebrity from the pop/film world to turn the Christmas lights on, but sadly I had to turn them down so they hired some chap dressed in red with a white beard for the job, ho ho! Good to see The Farmers in Nottage running a Thursday Acoustic Night and bands on the weekend, while Zoe at The Swan is also supporting regular music. Also best of luck to The Seagull after their refit! Top guitarist Phil Walters has left The Guzzards, and singer Mark told me they’ll carry on as a three-piece. The Cover Sluts have a side project called Last Flight To Pluto and will have an album called See You At The End released soon. Bridgend’s Funeral For A Friend also has a new CD out – check their website for details. Thanks for all my birthday cards, I’ll give my local postman Richie a Christmas tip - don’t talk to strangers. Haven’t heard from Steve Strange so will try and track him down for next month’s column. We’ve had some excellent presentations so far this season, as well as a brilliant Studio Evening with the superb Melissa Roundtree as our model. We also held our annual Dennis Lines Memorial Trophy Competition. Each member could enter up to four images, which could be Digital Images or Prints in any combination. Tim Fearnside judged the competition, and not only awarded the points, but also provided a critique on each image. It was a very close fought competition and three images attained the top mark of 20 points; “Boulders” by Geoff Baker, “Young Oaks in the Fog” by Richard Craze and “Jay Feeding in the Rain” by Glyn Edmunds. There could only be one winner, so after much deliberation first place was awarded to Richard Craze for “Young Oaks in the Fog”, with Geoff Baker and Glyn Edmunds therefore sharing second place. Five images achieved 19 points, two from Trevor Owen and one each from Martyn Derbyshire, John Corcoran and Glyn Edmunds, who all share third place. Congratulations to Richard for winning the competition. A Film Maker’s Point of View Many of us have an ambition to achieve a certain thing when we’re young, and sometimes we’re lucky enough to reach that objective. I always wanted to be a film maker and cameraman. But when I left school in the 1970s, the future seemed unsure for I had a previously-held and unfulfilled aim in life and a deep sense of anger that the educational system at that time seemed to have let me down. So I wrote a book about it, which I started whilst I was still there, and dreamed up three characters, Miles, Brian and Dave, who became drop-outs and whose main purpose in life was to do as little as possible. It was, in fact, a satire on the way I saw the system working – or not working – for it appeared to be chaotic and dysfunctional. “Free and Easy” was eventually published in 2008, and now it’s also available on Kindle. Having worked as a film producer for twenty-five years, I can see its potential in providing a nostalgic and anarchic view of those days now forty years ago, but my background is in documentaries so I think it will need a bigger company than mine to get it off the ground. PORTHCAWL LIONS BOXING DAY FUN RUN

Porthcawl Lions are organising their annual Boxing Day Fun Run as usual this year. The event starts and finishes at the HiTide, Mackworth Road and the route is to The Rest and back. The run starts at 11.00am but entrants are asked to register by 10.30am at the latest. The entry fee is £5.00 for adults and £1.00 for under 18’s and all the money will go to (mainly local) charities. There is a medal for everyone who finishes as well as a trophy for the winner of each category but you don’t have to be competitive to take part; club runners, joggers, walkers of all ages, even babies in prams and dogs can enjoy the exercise and fresh air. A Message From Widow Twankey Hello there panto go-ers - Widow Twankey here! It has been a long year and many weeks since our last panto, and these have taken their toll on my figure. So, with just a few weeks to go until the start of rehearsals, my exercise regime is now in full swing. When panto starts again in December, we will be doing two shows a day and having a sherry or three in the evening so it takes plenty of stamina and staying power to make it through the run. My physical routine is quite demanding; As you know I take washing in. My laundry is the busiest in Peking. I’m on the go all day and on my knees by bedtime, I pray that, some day, my boys will become a bit more useful than a chocolate teapot. Never mind! I should be ready for the start of rehearsals in December. Sport Porthcawl Surf Report

Countdown To 50th Anniversary Swim

It has been an incredible autumn and early winter for waves. Local waters have held on to the relative warmth of summer, after a season where sea temps were high anyway. This has given us a stormy Atlantic, beyond what we’d normally expect. Swells have had winter power since October, but the best of it was saved for when the wind dropped on the weekend of the Welsh Coast Surf Club championships in mid November. Being hailed by many as the best waves ever seen for a surf contest in Porthcawl, credit has to go to authoritarian director Bob Blythe for making the ambitious call. Running heats when the waves are this good is no mean feat as everyone wants to be out there instead. In the end, though, the result was one of the best events in memory. Contestants’ motivation was simply to surf again! Highlights included Vice Chairman Steve Horn’s now famous wipeout and a stunning longboard performance by both Sam Moore and George Schofield. In the end everyone had ripped, with a handful capping their Saturday with titles (results below). That left all of us free to finish off what was left of the shoulders on Sunday, when incredible conditions meant that by dark the word ‘epic’ was on everyone’s lips, among other hyperbole. If all autumns, and all club contests, were held in conditions like this Wales would have a new national sport in no time. Maybe it’s better that we have to wait for it though - who knows... See you in the water.
