PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATOR
retail destination for customers to shop in a single visit. Who will fill their boot in Aldi and then drive to John Street?
In addition, what will be the relationship between Aldi and the new Bus Station or indeed the new Bus Station and John Street?
If you are familiar with the High Street in Cowbridge, Waitrose is positioned in the High Street, as are the supermarkets in Tenby, Narberth, etc., but not Porthcawl?
BCBC should stand by for requests for reduced Business Rates from John Street and surrounding retailers, lets hope that Aldi’s business rates will compensate accordingly.”
David Norris, Porthcawl
WE’VE DONE THE TON!
Dear Editor,
Friends of The Retreat in Nottage, Porthcawl are proud to announce that their fundraising events, coffee mornings, quiz, cheese and wine evenings, recipe sales, art classes and a table top sale together with some generous donations have now enabled them to install a public access defibrillator on the external garage wall of 18, The Retreat.
The defibrillator has been registered with the ambulance service and many of the residents of the Retreat have already received training in its use.
For more information on raising funds for a defibrillator contact Sharon on www.calonhearts.org
Verne Farrugia, Porthcawl
THE ALDI EFFECT
Dear Editor,
The new Aldi is to be welcomed; however positioning Aldi to the north of Salt Lake will not benefit John Street retailers or customers! By locating Aldi away from the High Street, shoppers who previously shopped John Street, will now be diverted to Aldi and will be unlikely to visit both Aldi and John Street during the same shop.
Far better to have located Aldi at the south of Hilsboro Car Park (as I previously advised), facing Dock Street, connecting it with John Street and in doing so create a stronger and more unified
Dear Editor, With your help we have already picked up over a ton of rubbish and prevented it going into our part of the ocean at Coney…let that sink in…a TON!
So far, we have had 61 fantastic local volunteers help us out, a hardcore number joining us many times over the last couple of months of our campaign…and in all weathers!
A big thank you to Grow & Grind and Coney Surf, for your help too.
Beach cleans are vital for removing marine debris and plastics from our coastal waters which would otherwise harm or kill seabirds and other marine wildlife including dolphins, sharks, seals and whales. The debris can cause entrapment, strangulation, suffocation, starvation or poisoning after accidental ingestion.
Sea Shepherds Marine Debris Campaign aims to help restore our marine and coastal environment by reducing and removing the unprecedented amount of plastic and other harmful debris entering our oceans.
Our next target is 5 ton… we’d love you to come along and help. To get involved and find out when the next clean is search on Facebook for ‘SSUK Porthcawl Beach Clean’. It’s for the Oceans!

BOOK OF THE MONTH Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
Shortlisted for The Man Booker prize 2022 and the winner of the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction 2022, Small Things Like These is a story of unforgettable hope, quiet heroism and tenderness. Hilary Mantel described the book as “Powerful and affecting and very timely ...deeply moving”. It is 1985, in an Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal and timber merchant, faces into his busiest season. As he does the rounds, he feels the past rising up to meet him - and encounters the complicit silences of a people controlled by the Church.

Come and join Côr Bro Ogwr for its annual musical celebration of Christmas on Saturday, 10th December. The centerpiece of the programme will be Cecelia McDowall’s Cantata for Christmas, for which the Oldcastle School Choir, a primary school from Bridgend, will join the choir. There will be Christmas music new and old, including Carol y Seren by Gareth Glyn, and the Angel’s Carol by John Rutter, also traditional carols for the audience to join in.
Charlotte Ellett is the soprano soloist for the concert and teaches the Oldcastle School Choir. Born in Llantwit Major, Charlotte has performed in the major opera houses and concert halls around the world. Angharad Edwards will be playing the harp and Anita Datta is the accompanist.

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
Thanks for all the positive feedback after last month’s column regarding local jam and open mic nights. These, over the years, have always been a good starting point for new young music talent to get their career started and to build confidence, so I applaud the organisers giving the platform to perform. I will turn up over the holidays to offer my support, I promise. And talking about the X word, at the time of going to print I haven’t seen any adverts for the Porthcawl town turning on of the Christmas Lights – I hope I’m wrong, as the year before the pandemic there was a great event with a few thousand in John Street taking in the fab atmosphere. Fingers crossed there is an event. I have offered to turn the lights on if they can’t afford a celebrity, as I’d do it at a cheap rate, not what I’d charge when I’m switching on London’s Oxford Street. One gig for your diary not to miss is tribute Oasis and 90s music act Liam Gallagher’d (Mathyou Swift) who’s at The Seagull, Rest Bay, on Saturday 10th December. Great show and top guy, too! Well, have a Happy Xmas and an even greater New Year! Stag Marks 07549 728356
SOUNDS FAMILIAR – GALA CONCERT
A Gala Concert was the right name for the recent Sounds Familiar concert held at Gilgal Church in Porthcawl. They were joined by an ensemble from the Maesteg choir, Noteworthy and the soloist Jessica Robinson.
The audience was treated to a variety of songs to suit all tastes, which ranged from popular show songs to opera, and it was obvious that the programme appealed to the very appreciative audience. Jessica Robinson, an accomplished soloist, thrilled the audience with her singing – her name is one to remember, as she will be representing Wales in the Cardiff Singer of the World 2023.
Plans are afoot for Sounds Familiar and Noteworthy to perform together at a special concert next year- so watch this space!

BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR
How inspirational and satisfying it was to be back with our first Annual Concert for 3 years in one of our favourite venues, Capel Y Tabernacl Bridgend. The programme couldn’t have been better, with a balance of Welsh and English pieces, soprano Erin Gwyn Rossington who sang sublimely, Tomos Xerri with his mesmerising playing of the harp, and brilliant recital by Jeffrey Howard on the organ.
Musical Director Ryan Wood and Accompanist Stephanie Todd had clearly worked hard in difficult times through Covid, especially as they couldn’t practice with a full choir. Their individual performances on the night were absolutely top draw. The Choir’s long-term compere, former Chairman and Honorary Life Member Gareth Davies brought even more depth and humour than usual, which fired up an enthusiastic audience in readiness for the next piece. The word-perfect Gettysburg Address by Baritone Dr. Peter Morgan was once again filled with poignancy.
All in all, an outstanding concert, with every chorister performing out of their skin to repeated rapturous applause and a standing ovation.
A very warm welcome is always extended to new members at rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:30pm at Oldcastle Primary School, South Street Bridgend. More information can be found on our website at www.bridgendmalechoir.co.uk
PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
We recently held our annual Clyne Jones Trophy Competition, expertly judged by Rob Greenhill from the Rhondda. It was a very close battle in which Celia Madge became the overall winner.
Congratulations Celia. We’re a friendly camera club with a mix of male and female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels. It’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us.
We meet at St Clare’s School, Newton, CF36 5NR on Thursday evenings at 7pm.

POEMS
A PRAYER FOR HEALING
The one that you love is sick, Lord Is the message they sent, long ago. Though they thought him too late, Jesus waited So that all his power might know.
Lord Jesus, please heal our colleague, So that the doctors too are amazed, For as Lazarus came from his tomb long ago
May we know Christ can still heal today.
Please let our friend know we love her, And as Lazarus rose from the grave Bring our friend back is the prayer of us all Through Jesus, the mighty to save.
Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
WHO KNOWS?
When I take my final journey To unfamiliar lands, Alone I’ll leave just as I came Delivered to safe hands.
Will there be a light to guide me To my final resting place?
Will I see the ones I’ve loved before And recognise their face?
Will It comfort me to hear their sounds So familiar to my ears?
Will their essence be that same sweet scent I’ve remembered all these years? Will I know them as I knew them then? Will they recognise it’s me?
For they know me only as I was, I’ll have changed Irreparably.
In my soul I know they’ll know me, So different yet the same.
If I call them will they answer?
Will I hear them call my name?

The thing that makes me smile the most, Are the toys left on the floor, Abandoned for another day, The boxes valued more!
And what about the jumper, Knitted especially for you? Worn only on this special day, Then like the toys abandoned too!
I love listening to Christmas carols, Joining in to those I know, It doesn’t matter if you can’t sing, As it’s not a talent show.
My favourite part of this special day, Is the turkey sitting proud, The veg, the spuds, the stuffing, A little drink if we’re allowed.
The old folks like the Queen’s speech, It’s generally on at three, We’re not allowed to make a noise, Whilst they’re watching it on TV.
But soon the day is over, It’s quite a sad time then for me, The only thing left that makes me smile, Are the chocolates still on the tree! Marilyn Cook, Bridgend
CHRISTMAS - AN ILLUSION
Christmas flits through empty streets, Flickers like a candle flame at shuttered windows, Flows through the hearts of the masked, frightened folk, Like the river of jackdaws flying from roofs and trees, Like the ghost of a Hope That somewhere in a Manger rests Joseph and Mary,
Awaiting the Birth of new Life, While along the grey and silent Channel Migrants flee, to share our Hope, Our spirit of Christmas And re-kindle An illusion.
Sally Richards, Porthcawl
CYMRU AM BYTH: WALES FOREVER
Every day when I wake up… I’ve got a fire in my heart for you, A total eclipse of the heart been Caught by the wind, blowing from Dakota to Doha.
Your history is mine, one of our long shots paid off. You got me begging you for mercy because
You’re just too good to be true, I can’t take my eyes off of you.
It’s good to touch the green, green grass of home, Old land of our mothers and fathers, poets and singers gives A design for life, masses against the classes with Our red wall solidarity across an international velvet underground.
Despite (and because) of everything and everyone, We’re still here
With pure hearts full of goodness- this will ever be our story. Keep these burning words before ye: We are Wales forever. Together, stronger.
Ni yw Cymru am byth. Gyda’n gilydd, cryfach.

COST OF CANCER
With Christmas being not far away we’d like to remind you all of our event called a Light for A Life which is on Sunday 4th December from 5pm at The Hi-Tide. Father Christmas will be there for the kids, and we’ll have some fab raffle prizes too. It would be really lovely to see you all there.
We would like to say “thank you “ to Kath and Mark Blight and the choirs De Capo and Crescendo as they put on a “This is Us” evening on which was to show case the little ones who sing in De Capo. What an evening it was, it was incredible and I loved it.
They raised £350 for us. It was such a lovely evening so thank you to all those who came and donated. It is really important for us to keep putting the message out there, what and why we do what we do.
For those of you who don’t know, we help families of those who are going through treatment for cancer. We help with the bills that arrive on the door mat every month regardless of what the occupants are going through. Bills like gas, electric, water etc. So, if your family is affected or you know someone is affected you know what to do, get in touch with us. We offer families total discretion and privacy.

GAMES PEOPLE PLAY
Have you ever played Wordle or a similar game where you are given five blank squares and have to make a word, selecting letters that may be correct but not in the right place or just wrong. Then by a process of elimination and new letters you have six goes to complete the game, scores range from impressive to phew.
The game is popular so if we can make a word from the 10 – 20,000 in our vocabulary imagine what we could do if we played this game with our thoughts?
Envisage having a thought that doesn’t belong and is dismissed or having a thought that is approved but at the wrong time such as a list of things you need to do is good in the morning but not so good as when you want to sleep!
Then you start to realise that as you begin to train your mind
to notice your thoughts you can put them in the right order, dismiss them or wait a while until you want to deal with them at a more suitable time.
Why not treat what is going on in your mind as a sort of game, one that you have all the winning moves for and that you can just sit back and play knowing that you can’t lose but first you need to begin and engage with the game we call life. Good luck.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons. It usually starts in the late fall and early winter and goes away during the spring and summer. Some people do have episodes of depression that start in the spring or summer, but that is a lot less common. Symptoms of SAD may include: Sadness, Gloomy outlook, Feeling hopeless, worthless, and irritable, Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy, Low energy, Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping, Carbohydrate cravings and weight gain, Thoughts of death or suicide.
SAD is more common in women, young people, and those who live far from the equator. You are also more likely to have SAD if you or your family members have depression. The exact causes of SAD are unknown and researchers have found that people with SAD may have an imbalance of serotonin, a brain chemical that affects your mood. Their bodies also make too much melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep, and not enough vitamin D. The main treatment for SAD is light therapy. The idea behind light therapy is to replace the sunshine that you miss during the spring and winter months. You sit in front of a light therapy box every morning to get daily exposure to bright, artificial light. But some people with SAD do not respond to light therapy alone. Antidepressant medicines and talk therapy can reduce SAD symptoms, either alone or combined with light therapy.

HELPING PEOPLE INTO WORK
I was delighted to attend the opening of a new support hub for Porthcawl jobseekers recently. Run by Employability Bridgend and based at the Old Portway Surgery, the service offers local people expert advice, support and mentoring across all aspects of training and developing new skills, seeking new jobs, and securing new employment.
With training rooms, a job club, ICT access and more, the hub is available on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays between 9:30am and 2:30pm.
There are also plans to hold monthly coffee mornings for Ukrainian refugees and their host families.
The new hub follows the opening last summer of another support hub for jobseekers, this time based at Tŷ Llynfi in Maesteg, which is available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am to 3:30pm.
Since 2016, Employability Bridgend has supported more than 5,000 individuals, including 740 young people. They have provided training to 1,800 individuals, have helped 360 people secure volunteering posts, and have supported 1,740 more into new jobs.
They also offer vocational qualifications and a triage service that helps match people against jobs and positions.
The new hubs are offering local people an opportunity to benefit from expert advice and support – find out more by contacting employability@bridgend.gov.uk or 01656 815317.

‘CUT THE CRAP’ CAMPAIGN
It was great to sponsor the Crohn’s and Colitis UK campaign launch “Cut the Crap” in the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay last month. Crohn’s and Colitis UK charity aim to raise awareness of symptoms associated with the disease and are urging people to contact their GP or medical professional if they are facing stomach pain, diarrhea or blood in stool. Since sponsoring the event, I reached out to our community on social media to hear experiences around diagnosis, support and treatment. Overwhelmingly, residents spoke about the length of time it takes to get an official diagnosis, and that too-often people are being misdiagnosed for other illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease or stress. In the Senedd Chamber, I asked the Minister for Health and Social Care what more The Welsh Government could do to raise awareness of the symptoms for both the public, and within the health care system. We also need to ensure that primary care settings have the tools available to test patients for Crohn’s and Colitis. If you have any queries around this issue, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at: Sarah.murphy@senedd.Wales

MERRY CHRISTMAS
As well as the return of Digital Christmas celebrations, a wide range of local events will be taking place this Christmas to help spread some much-needed festive cheer. Porthcawl Museum’s Victorian Christmas will take us back in time on 3 December with an event featuring Victorian re-enactors, Santa’s grotto and traditional carols, toys, decorations, arts, crafts and more. Porthcawl town council’s Christmas lights are set to be switched on that same evening, then on 17 December the town will host an Artisan Christmas Food, Craft and Gift Market.
In Bridgend, Santa will arrive with a parade at 12pm on 26 November before the town council’s Christmas lights are switched on later that afternoon, and Carnegie House will host a grotto, which will be available every Saturday until 17 December. The town centre will also host the Artisan Christmas Food, Craft and Gift Market on 3 December.
In Maesteg, Santa will arrive by sleigh on 26 November before heading into his grotto at Maesteg Market where he will be available for ‘Santa selfies’ on both 26 and 27 November, and on every Saturday and Sunday in December - for full details on all of these events, visit www.bridgend.gov.uk

PORTHCAWL MAYOR’S MESSAGE
The preparations for Christmas have been slightly easier this year than they have been over the last couple of years, but perhaps still not as ‘normal’ as we all might like. This year however we hope the town will be able to enjoy a traditional community celebration with a full day of events taking place on Saturday 3rd December. This starts with a Victorian Christmas event in John Street, then a Lantern Parade from the Harbour to Griffin Park and finally an evening Christmas Light Switchon with carol singing, refreshments and of course Santa! We are living in extraordinary times, and after another tough year it’s more important than ever to look after one another, keep ourselves and others safe and look forward to the New Year. I very much hope 2023 will bring joy and prosperity to you all. I wish you a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year.

GP APPOINTMENTS LOGJAM NEEDS TO
BE SOLVED
I have been increasingly concerned about the volume of complaints I am getting from Porthcawl residents about long delays in getting GP appointments at the Health Centre. The main problem seems to be caused by the decision to issue new appointments at 8am each day leading to the phone lines becoming jammed. Very often, by the time patients get through, all the appointment slots have gone.
I have been in touch with the practice manager to offer my support and asking what administrative changes they could make to avoid the 8am rush and ensure that patients do not need to make multiple calls to get an appointment. For example, could appointments for non-urgent cases be released further ahead leaving the daily release for urgent cases only?
In order to assess the scale of the problem, I have put a survey up on my website - jamiewallisbridgend.com and Facebook page
- Jamie Wallis MP so that people can let me know about what difficulties they have encountered – not just with the Porthcawl practice but with others as well. People can also write to my office at 12, Lias Road, Porthcawl. CF36 3AH This problem seems to be nationwide and may need action from Welsh Government to solve.
JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend
KEEPING THE COUNTY BOROUGH MOVING
If you have ever wondered what it takes to keep Bridgend County Borough moving over the winter season, the ‘get ready for winter’ page over at the council’s website tells you everything you need to know.
With more than 790 kilometres of local road network to look after, our winter maintenance plan identifies priority routes, centres for emergency services, bus routes, isolated villages, streets on steep inclines, industrial and shopping areas, schools, approaches to cemeteries, GP surgeries, care homes and more. It also outlines how secondary roads are dealt with after the main highways network has been treated.
A great deal of planning goes into ensuring that essential services can continue during periods of severe winter weather. As well as salting roads, clearing snow and keeping traffic flowing, we store more than 5,000 tonnes of salt, and have plans in place for replenishing stocks as well as arrangements with neighbouring authorities for both giving and receiving help during prolonged bouts of poor weather.
In addition to this, we also strive to protect essential frontline services such as Homecare, kerbside recycling and refuse collections, schools and more – why not visit our ‘get ready for winter’ pages and find out for yourself?

BCBC BEING URGED TO DITCH TOURISM TAX PLAN
There’s more bad news on the horizon for businesses in Porthcawl unless Labour and Plaid Cymru ditch their disastrous joint plan to impose a tourism tax.
Welsh Government’s own report into the implications of this levy has shown that there could be a multi-million pound hit on the sector with the loss of thousands of jobs. This is based on the experiences of other countries around the world where tourism taxes have been imposed.
The report found that for every one per cent increase in the cost of a holiday, there is an average one per cent drop in demand. Swansea Council has already announced that it will not impose a levy if Welsh Government goes ahead with their plan. Councillors fear the effects on the tourism industry of Gower. I call on BCBC to take a similar stance and make a declaration now that they will not impose a tourism levy even if they are given the power to do so.
This would relieve many tourism operators in Porthcawl of a great deal of worry as well as quelling the fears of the hundreds of people whose jobs would be at stake.

BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
At long last, pupils were able to attend a school trip abroad and it was the turn of the History department, along with 45 Year 11 pupils, who braved an early morning departure from school, to begin their battlefields tour. The students were led by two battlefields tour guides/ historians through various sites covering the full story of the First World War. Students entered real trenches, handled artefacts and participated in the Last Post at Menin Gate itself. Honouring our local connections to the war, wreaths were laid (and the National Anthem Sung!) at the Welsh National Memorial, Mametz Wood, the grave of Hedd Wyn. The group even found time to enjoy some Belgian chocolates in Ypres! The visit was a great success, and we are incredibly proud of the students for their attitude, their behaviour and most of all their interest. As the year draws to a close, the Performing Arts department would like to extend a warm welcome to the local community to our Carol Service on 19th December, 7pm, at Nolton Church. We hope to see you there and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas!
PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS
We have really enjoyed our new curriculum topics this term. Our Year 2 class loved visiting the Ceri at Porthcawl Museum to learn more about the local area and how it has changed. Ceri is extremely knowledgeable - our local museum is fascinating and well worth a visit if you have never been. Year 1 really enjoyed going to Porthcawl Travel agents for their topic on journeys – the staff were amazing with the children and Rachel (from Maples) treated the class to a lolly each before they returned to school! The oldest members of our school council attended the Remembrance Service at All Saints and were proud to lay the wreath on behalf of our school. Our Nursery children are happy and have settled in extremely well. We still have Nursery spaces for September 2023 and our next Nursery Open Morning is on the 6th December at 9.10am. We are a small and friendly primary school set in large grounds. Our classes are small and organised in year groups; the average class size is 22 children. If you have moved into the area and are looking for a new school, please contact me for a chat on the number below or email: admin.porthcawlprimary@bridgend.gov.uk.

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE NEWS
As you may already know, I will retire from school on 31st December. I have had 25 great years at PCS and have enjoyed every minute meeting some truly fantastic young people and working with many inspirational teachers and managers. Parents and carers have always been most encouraging, and the kind words have always been very welcome. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have served as Head Teacher for the past 10 years.
With so many people to thank and I am worried that thanking people potentially runs the risk of overlooking someone which I would never do. PCS is one of the best in Wales and our strength is based upon the co-operation between the learners, parents/ carers and the staff. I do hope the school moves forward with confidence, there will be many challenges ahead, but I know our school will prevail.
I have been very fortunate to have worked with a very supportive and loyal Governing Body. May I thank Governors,

past and present, for their service to the school, all have worked with have a common core desire, the best for every learner at our school.
As my time comes to an end we naturally look to the future. I am delighted to inform you that the next Head Teacher will be Mr Michael Stephens. Mr Stephens is currently the Deputy Head at Cynffig Comprehensive School, and we all offer the best of Porthcawl welcomes.
The past 25 years have been an outstanding experience for me, my sincere thanks to all I have met and worked with.

ST CLARE’S SCHOOL
St Clare’s is a beautiful school both inside and out, it has an old soul but refuses to stand still. From Nursery through to Sixth Form, our purpose is clear. Our strong curriculum, steadfast pastoral care and enriching extra-curricular programme enable us to provide pupils with the freedom and support to flourish independently.
Our approach is to teach each and every child in the most effective way for them; we call this individualised learning. At the heart of this approach is our ability to understand precisely where your child is on their learning journey.
In choosing St Clare’s as a school for your son or daughter you are ensuring that they are educated in a nurturing environment and will realise their full potential.
Our Nursery holds the Day Nurseries UK Top 20 (Wales) Award for the second year running. Our youngest learners enjoy Forest School, French/Spanish and optional ballet.
Our GCSE record is impressive year on year and St Clare’s is in the top 5% of top-performing schools for A-Level performance since 2018. Senior Discovery Day for Y6 and Y5 last week was fully booked and so much fun for everyone. Call (01656) 789966 for an informal chat or visit www.stclares-school.co.uk Helen Hier, Head Teacher
NEWYDDION YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR
After a relaxing half term, we returned to school full of energy and ready for the excitement of the football World Cup and Christmas!
On Tuesday 8th November, Welsh Water visited us in order to raise awareness of the need to save our water supplies. The whole school learnt a lot during the assembly and pupils from years 3-6 were lucky enough to take part in a variety of activities and challenges during the afternoon.
On Thursday the 10th of November the whole school joined hundreds of thousands of pupils across Wales to take part in the Urdd Jambori. This year the event was held via Zoom and focussed on the 100-year birthday of the Urdd and also the Football World Cup. Dafydd Iwan had a leading role as he sang “Yma o Hyd”. We all had an amazing morning!
The week of 14th November was Anti-bullying week. On Monday everyone wore odd socks to celebrate the fact that we are all different and unique! On Friday the school collected money for Children in Need by wearing fancy dress to school. We are busy practising Christmas songs, ready for the concerts – exciting!

Please do not donate hard point saws as these cannot be replaced when worn out.
This shipment will reach Uganda for Christmas giving some people a really useful present and a means of improving income for them and their family. I don’t suppose you asked for a tool kit for Christmas but whatever you asked for I hope you all have a really happy Christmas.

We’re very pleased to tell you that our theatre trips have resumed, our first outing since the pandemic was to the New Theatre to see The Lavender Hill Mob, some enjoyed a pre theatre lunch while others enjoyed some retail therapy, but a good time was enjoyed by all. Rain forced a photo shot of the revellers to be taken on the bus instead of by the theatre door! The second theatre visit will be in March to watch the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, again at the New Theatre.
Our October visit was to the Botanical Gardens of Wales, the weather was forecast as rain, but the sun mostly shone, and everyone could make the most of the facilities available to them, this was the last one for 2022 as we get ready for a busy festive season.
A full programme of interest groups, Wednesday talks, visits, theatre visits and summer debates have now been achieved and full service has resumed.
Our membership fees include access to over 40 interest groups, monthly talks and a summer programme of evening talks or debates, there’s something there for everyone. Not included are visits and trips.

Our secretary Katherin had arranged for us to all make green hearts by sewing them on to squares of material, these will be sent to federation house along with other Women’s Institutes work to draw attention to climate change and to celebrate 100 years

COPING AFTER GOING BLIND
How would any of us cope, if like Faith we were not only struck down by a Stroke, but also had to deal with the loss of sight. One cannot imagine how Faith felt, but her determination and strength of character pulled her through such an ordeal. Not only did she carry on working at first; in a high-profile job, but is now supporting the Guide Dogs association through having Buddy her own guide dog, which has given her a new lease of life.
Guide dogs retire after 9 years and are a gift to the people who need them. So, like most things’ money is needed to keep the valuable service alive. Faith has the support of her husband Joseph and her granddaughter Rosanna who is six years old and the first thing Rosanna said to me, is “would you like to have a fridge magnet”
Faith is such a remarkable person an inspiration to others; it was a pleasure to meet her. We thank Faith for sharing her incredible story of her life with us and we know her guide dog Buddy will serve her well.

NEWTON WI
The November meeting was postponed until the 16th November due to atrocious weather conditions.
On November 1st we visited ‘Hotters Shoes’ in Cardiff, the weather was horrendous, but didn’t dampen our enthusiasm for seeking out a bargain.
In October, Newton WI celebrated our 60th birthday, with a celebratory party. We were pleased to have with us, one of the ‘Founder Members’ Mrs Val Thomas. The buffet was delicious beautifully prepared by our President Jennifer, plus a splendid cake, with amazing entertainment, it was a night to remember.
On the 1st December, at All Saints Church, Newton W.I. President and Members are proud to present a charity Christmas Concert, in aid of ‘LATCH’ the Welsh Children’s Charity. It will involve Choirs from Porthcawl Schools ‘Children singing for children’. The concert will commence at 6.30pm. Admittance Adults £3 Children Free, payable at the door. We hope you will come and support this very worthy cause.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES
Does Christmas make you feel happy or sad? Christmas raises our expectations with bright lights, cheery songs and the promise of presents. But for some people melancholy memories, stress to please everyone, quarrels in the family and unmet expectations can leave our Christmas feeling empty and disappointing.
What a difference that first Christmas made in the lives of the Wise Men. Seeking spiritual truth they were led to Jesus Christ and found an endless source of joy in the incarnation of the eternal Son of God.
The bible says ‘When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him”.
Wise people still seek Jesus. Finding Jesus is the secret to a real and lasting Happy Christmas. Why not visit his house/church this Christmas, wonder at his life, birth, death and resurrection and worship Him. Jesus is the reason for the season and in knowing Him is real joy.
You are welcome at every church this Christmas, but let me give you a special invitation to Gilgal Baptist Church, Park Avenue, Porthcawl. Check us out on social media.
Merry
Christmas. Rev. Martin Gillard
SKER WI BEETLE DRIVE
Sker WI held a Halloween Beetle Drive on the 31st October when members enjoyed cheese and wine. It was a very entertaining evening. The monthly meeting was on November 10th. Members sang Jerusalem and the monthly business was read. There was a very special announcement and presentation for a long serving past member Madge Wallis who will be 100 years old later this month. She had been a very active member who joined in with lots of different activities. A bouquet of flowers and a birthday cake were presented to her and everyone sang Happy Birthday and wished her well. The guest speaker was Julie who brought a wonderful selection of scarves, jewellery, handbags, gloves and purses, which would be lovely gifts for Christmas. Heather Jenkins gave the vote of thanks. After refreshments Cynthia produce a game of Handbag Bingo, it is truly amazing what is hiding in our handbags. The meeting closed with the National Anthem. The next meeting will be our Christmas meeting on the 8th December when we will have a Fish and Chip supper and entertainment by The Red Kites. Visitors are always welcome.

Our meeting last month started yet again on a sad not as members stood in memory of another member who had died. Joyce Whiting was a much loved and valued member who will be sadly missed.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD: EVA MARIE SAINT
Eva Marie Saint was born on July 4, 1924. Her ancestors were Quakers. In a career spanning over 70 years, she won numerous awards and appeared in countless movie, television and theatre productions.
Eva often rejected prominent movie roles. Instead, she preferred to focus on her family – she and her husband Jeffrey Hayden were married for 64 years – and roles she found creatively satisfying.
One of Eva’s most notable roles was Eve Kendall in North by Northwest. Alfred Hitchcock, director of North by Northwest, reckoned that Eva should have concentrated on ‘glamorous’ roles, not ‘kitchen sink’ roles. She could certainly do glamour, but I think she found the down to earth roles more satisfying. A personal favourite of mine is her performance as Anna Hedler in 36 Hours, a psychological World War Two drama, which also starred James Garner.
Now aged 98, Eva Marie Saint can be regarded as the last link with the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Must see Eva Marie Saint movie, On The Waterfront, 1954, her stunning debut starring opposite Marlon Brando.

PORTHCAWL’S LAST WW1 CASUALTY FOUND
In 2014 I was asked by a local newspaper to provide monthly articles commemorating the Centenary of the First World War. 54 articles later every soldier on the Porthcawl Memorial had been found but one. W.J. Davies remained elusive. A fortnight ago, I had an email from a Hazlet Turner, who was working on behalf of the ‘In From The Cold Project’, who research servicemen who had died of their WW1 wounds but
had not been recognised at the time. Hazlet asked if we could confirm the grave of a GNR William John Davies in St Tyfodwg’s Church, Glynogwr. To my surprise he pointed me to the only article in the Porthcawl News reporting the death of William John Davies, aged 24, Royal Garrison Artillery, Service No. 76998, who having been medically discharged due to illness on 10 Jan 1919, had died on 13 Nov 1919 at Garw Villa, South Road, Porthcawl. His mother Rebecca who was the widow of Thomas Davies, late of Brynwith Farm, Glynogwr remained in Porthcawl until her death. Once we research his full story GNR Davies will be included in the next reprint of Book 3 of Porthcawl and The Great War available at the museum.

AND IF YOU’RE OFF WORK SICK…WHAT THEN?
It’s seems hard to raise too many smiles at the moment, amidst all the current turmoil, with inflation at over 10%, raised mortgage rates and a general monetary squeeze, which is bad enough. That said, it is easy to miss perhaps the most important issue of all in many ways.
If you’re finding it tough to pay the bills and the mortgage when you’re receiving full pay, how will those bills be paid if you are unable to work due to illness or accident?
Some employers may pay something to help but the State will not assist with mortgage payments for the first nine months. Along with the rising food bill, energy bills and cost of clothes for the kids, with school uniforms etc., it’s a tough position to be in. However, a major Friendly Society insurer has come up with probably the best plan I’ve ever seen of its kind, which could literally save the Family’s financial position if a wage is suddenly stopped. Holloway Friendly, to whom we are an approved introducer, could provide the answer to your income problems

policy, where
can get as much as £1,500 a month for as little as £6-68, depending on your age and length of term you want covered. It won’t be as low a cost as this for everyone of course but from the figures we’ve had for several clients already, it can cost little more than the price of a can of fizzy drink per day, which is extraordinary value for so much cover. Plus of course, the importance of paying your bills as opposed to buying the drink is a no-brainer.
Even if you do get any state benefits at all, you would still receive the full amount of cover per month – unlike many income plans which deduct the amount the state benefits amount before they pay you anything, which can undermine your finances or cost you considerably more. All you need do is call us and we’ll provide free quotes for you, with no commitment.
Finally, coming back to mortgages themselves, there has been a noticeable decrease in rates in interest rates as lenders have already anticipated Bank of England action and have priced their products accordingly.
As we have access to the whole of the market on a daily basis, you have the comfort of knowing if a rate is available, we’ll have it. Call 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 and we’ll be glad to help. In the meantime, have a Happy Christmas and thanks to everyone who has entrusted us with their business this year. Roll on 2023…

ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT PAYING CARE FEES IN THE FUTURE?
It can be a shock to many people (and their loved ones) when they realise the monthly costs of a residential care home, which can be very expensive and often in excess of £3000 per month. Whilst you may be eligible for financial help from your local authority or, in some circumstances, from the NHS, there is a detailed assessment which needs to be carried out before a determination is made.
Many people do not qualify for this financial help and so the local authority will carry out a financial assessment otherwise known as a means test to ascertain your income and capital, which includes valuing all your assets such as your home, other properties, savings and investments. In Wales, if you have capital assets collectively valued at more than £50,000 then you will be expected to pay full care costs fees, which is known as self-funding. In England, this figure is just £23,250. Many people are forced to sell properties or investments to release capital to meet the monthly care costs. Therefore, it is only natural that people are looking at protecting their assets, especially if they wish to leave their family home to their children. Many people will also seek financial advice about their income and ensuring that their investments are achieving the best income for them, remember your income can be offset against the monthly care costs. People often overlook the impact paying monthly care costs might have on their spouse or partner who continues to live at home but who has, for many years, relied on their joint income with their spouse/partner.
Whilst there are alternatives to going into a care home such as domiciliary care and having care at home, the threshold for capital in this type of arrangement is even lower. Some people believe that having a Will in place is all that is required from them, sadly, that is not always the case, there is much further planning that can take place to at least try to protect assets or place you in the best position to meet monthly care costs. This is why early planning is required for you, your partner and family. We strongly recommend that you speak to our Estates and Trust team to explore the best options available to you.
LOOKING BACK AT 2022
2022 has been a year of big change for me, as the firm in which I worked for more than four years has sadly had to close. I am delighted to have joined the Porthcawl office of Red Kite law (formerly David & Snape). Red Kite Law offers a wide range of legal services to both commercial and private clients, and I am delighted to be part of it.
I thought that it would be a good idea to look back at some of the changes that 2022 has brought and the effect that these have on people in general. In April 2022, after many years of discussion and planning, no fault divorce was brought in. This means that people can now divorce without blaming the other for the marital breakdown or having to live separate and apart for at least two years.
Cohabitation Law is an area which will undoubtedly be reformed in coming years. At present Judges do not have discretion to award lump sums as they would in cases involving the breakdown of a marriage. Given the percentage of cohabiting couples in the UK, this means that many people are receiving less from a financial settlement than they could if they had been married to their ex-partner. Clearly this is unfair and needs to be changed.
Recently there has been debate about how transparent the court system is, and how this affects public suspicions of the system. Proceedings in family courts have always been private, which means that the public cannot observe them. If reporting restrictions were lifted, it is hoped that there will be an increased level of trust in the court system, and public scrutiny will make the system more efficient.
If the above issues affect you, then please contact me at Red Kite to discuss.

Deadline date for the January 2023 issue is: SATURDAY 10TH DECEMBER
LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
December in the garden isn’t a busy time, but on days that allow digging is a good way to exercise and keep warm. Trees such as Acers can still be cut back to avoid bleeding, any vegetables now in your plot should be harvested. Make sure greenhouses are insulated and safely battened down ready for winter winds and cold temperatures. Now is the time to look after our feathered friends with plenty of goodies, how about making a bee or insect hotel? Remember to regularly check on ponds especially when ice forms. Try not to turn compost, there may be a hedgehog sheltering in there. Greenery can be brought into the house for festive decorations; it brightens the room, is free and just needs a little bit of effort to make something beautiful. Have a go! Thank you to everyone who supported our Christmas Fayre this year we do very much appreciate it. Can I and the Committee at Laleston Gardening Club wish all our members and supporters a very Happy Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY
We were delighted to see so many members and visitors at our Christmas Open Evening. We enjoyed a marvellous demonstration by the award winning Delyth Price. There were 12 floral displays to distribute to our raffle winners and we had many tips and ideas for Christmas floral displays. Our last meeting before Christmas will be on December 14th when we will be making a Christmas hanging decoration. All members are welcome to attend to make their own creation or just observe. At the time of writing we are also anticipating our 60th anniversary dinner and speaker meeting at the Grove Golf club.
We meet again on January 11th for Afternoon tea with speaker Terry Walton, the radio gardener. All our meetings will be held at Gilgal hall on the first and 3rd Wednesday evenings of the month at 7 for 7.30 start. Visitors and members are always welcome and can enrol at any time.
Please call 01656222985 or look at our Facebook page for more information.
Merry Christmas and Happy New year from all our members.

“God gave us memory so that we may have roses in December.” (JM Barrie) Tall bush roses should be cut down to half to prevent wind rock the stiff branches catch the wind like a sail and loosen the plant! When pruning roses don’t waste time cutting every stem to an outward facing bud, cut them back hard, if you have lots you can even use a hedge trimmer! After all, when did you worry about “outward facing buds” when trimming a hedge and has not worrying about them ever done your hedge any harm!
Encourage hungry birds to your garden by feeding them, our feathered friends keep garden pests down and bring such joy on a bleak winters day!
If you are having real Christmas tree this year, remember to give it a lovely drink of water and find a suitable home for it outside afterwards. A tree is for life not just for Christmas!
We are having a Christmas Disco/Karaoke on December the 10th in the Social Club on Cefn tickets are £7.50 included is a lovely curry with rice and chips – bargain. We promise not to talk about compost! Contact our website for tickets.
Merry Christmas.

PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS MORNING SWIM
We can’t wait to see you all again for the 2022 Christmas Morning Swim. Having to miss the last 2 years has been tough for all of us so we’re hoping that this year you’ll be out in force to support this great local event. This year’s theme is ‘Waste not, want not’ - so get your thinking caps on as to how you can reflect that in your costumes on the day.
Our headline charity is Porthcawl RNLI who do so much to keep our coastline safe. We will also be helping many other local charities too.
If you’d like to register to swim or to support as a volunteer on the day please head to our website www.christmasswim.org. You will also find a link to donate through the website too. The Swimmers will enter the water slightly earlier than usual this year due to an extremely low tide. Please meet at the HiTide from 10.30am and be ready to enter the water at 11.15am. See you at the beach…
