Response To Madeleine Moon’s Column (Nov 2014 Issue) Dear Editor, The Conservative government in Westminster has taken steps to make work pay and restrict benefits to the equivalent of earning around £35K. We now have more than 1.75 million people in work since 2010 and the proportion of workless families, and the proportion of children living in workless families, are the lowest since records began in 1996. Madeleine Moon’s letter in the November issue of Seaside News opposes the benefit cap, arguing that it reduces the size of the local economy. This is possibly the most extreme example of muddled Labour thinking that I have seen – and that’s against some pretty stiff competition. In essence, Ms Moon’s argument is that we can boost economic growth by increasing benefit spending, forgetting that benefits are recycled taxes (or more state debt) less a government admin charge. It’s like having a blood transfusion in your right arm by taking blood from your left arm, whilst spilling a third of it in the process. The Conservative way is to boost growth by making work pay and letting hard working tax payers keep and spend more of their own money in the local economy. After 5 years of a Conservative led government, we have the fastest growing economy in Europe, 30,490 people in Bridgend have had a £705 income tax reduction and 3,660 in Bridgend have been removed from income tax altogether. A healthy growing economy is a prerequisite of a strong and healthy NHS. If Ed Miliband and Madeleine Moon are elected in May, we can expect more borrowing, more spending, higher taxes (they already have five new taxes lined up for us!) and a reversal of so much that the British people have achieved in the last 5 years. Meirion Jenkins, Penyfai (Prospective MP for Bridgend, Welsh Conservative Party)

A More Settled Clime Dear Editor, Views taken in a more settled clime. Kind regards, Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl

Bridgend Rotary Says Thanks Dear Editor, The Bridgend Rotary Club Members and its President Sue Cassidy would like to thank all of the people of Bridgend for their generous support to our local Christmas charity appeal, which raised over £3,000 pounds. The President said that “without the kindness shown by a great many of our community, we would be poorer as individuals and as a community. As a result of this generosity, we will be in a position to offer some important and needed charitable support to our local organisations that find themselves in need later this year.” Major Wayne B Morgan MBE, Bridgend

past decade we have seen at first hand the wonderful work that the charity does for local people and their families when they are suffering from ill health. It is lovely to be able to combine our hobby with raising funds for a very worthwhile and much needed local charity”. Club members visited Sandville to hear from Gwyneth and her volunteers about the current demand on the service and see the latest facilities that Sandville can offer to local people who use the centre. Car Enthusiasts Raise Funds For Local Charity

Dear Editor, Members of Bridgend MG Owners’ Club made a special trip to Sandville Court Self Help Centre in Porthcawl to present a cheque from its fund-raising efforts throughout the year. The local classic car club presented a cheque for £500 to Nurse Director Gwyneth Poacher MBE, which was raised from proceeds from the Club’s Annual Cwm to Coast Run. The Run, held each June, attracts classic car enthusiasts from across the UK to take part in a fund-raising road run, followed by supper at a local eatery. Earlier in the year a further donation of £500 was presented to the charity, making a total of £1000 from the Club’s fundraising efforts in 2014. Club Chairman, Paul Bullock said, :“We are delighted to continue our long-standing support of Sandville Self Help Centre. Over the Seaside News | 10

SCHOOLS Brynteg School News

After weeks of fundraising activities a grand total of £4778 was raised for the annual Santa Appeal to buy gifts for 200 children in Bridgend and £275 was donated to the local Women’s refuge. Three Year 9 pupils, Nathan Alexander, Christopher Hart and Chloe Hawker, did a sponsored walk up Pen y Fan [the highest mountain in South Wales] to raise money for the appeal. Well done. Staff paid up to take part in the ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ and a further £140 was donated to the ‘Save the Children’ Fund. Some Year 10 Welsh Baccalaureate students took part in the Wallich Rucksack Appeal for the homeless in Bridgend. The ruck sacks provided essential items for the unfortunate homeless people of the borough. Year 9 art students spent some quality time with Britain’s Got Talent’ artist Nathan Wyburn. Nathan was famous for creating portraits of celebrities out of toast and students were given the opportunity to create their own designs. It was certainly an enjoyable and unique experience. Following on from our excellent ‘Silver Award’ successes Brynteg now has its first cohort of Year 12 candidates embarking on the Duke of Edinburgh Award ‘Gold’ Award. Good luck! Twenty-five sixth form physics students attended the Swansea University Christmas lectures. They witnessed fascinating demonstrations and were invited to look around the Antimatter laboratory during their visit. The students found this extremely interesting and informative. The Physics department also took thirty-five Year 10 pupils to @Bristol Science Exhibition Centre to attend a workshop on sustainable engineering. The pupils toured the building to see first-hand the technology that makes @Bristol one of the greenest buildings in the UK. Pupils then participated in a workshop where they had a chance to apply their knowledge taught in school and their new found knowledge and skills in sustainability to a real life engineering dilemma. The students finished the day with some ice-skating which some found easier than others! Brynteg is always proud to share good news of its past pupils. Former student Will Thomas, studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University, gained a rugby’ blue’ in a recent match at Twickenham. Dominic Manetta-Jones, who left us last summer to study medicine at Oxford, has been awarded with the prestigious ‘Goronwy Jones ’prize, this means that he was the highest scoring A-Level WJEC Physics student in Wales last summer. Congratulations to you both. Pam Doster Photo: Nathan Wyburn with Year 9 Pupils Seaside News | 12

Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr News Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! Happy New year! Welcome to our new nursery pupils who will be taught in Mabon class every morning for this academic year. This early start will provide a great linguistic advantage, enabling the children to take advantage of the opportunity at this all important developmental stage to benefit from the effective language teaching technique of total language immersion under the care of qualified and experienced staff. If you’re interested in learning more about Welsh medium education and the advantages of bilingualism please contact us on 01656 754865 or admin.yfos@ bridgend.gov.uk Once again we would like to say a huge thank you to all our families! Through working together our attendance has now been over 95% for a year. This is excellent news as good attendance optimises every child’s opportunity to succeed at school. Da iawn wir! In addition to getting back into the swing of school work, Urdd activities are now well underway. Years 5 & 6 enjoyed a fantastic multi-sports event at Bridgend Recreation Centre & the rugby team played well in the tournament at Pontypridd. A huge thank you to Mr Maneseitava & Mr Llewellyn for their assistance with rugby again this term. Rhiannon Dixon, Pennaeth / Head

Porthcawl Comprehensive School

Winter has been shortened at school by the fun and excitement generated by our annual school production. The curtain has just come down on our 37th consecutive school show, and this year pupils delighted audiences with their production of Grease. As has become our custom, packed houses every night were thrilled by the professional spectacle they enjoyed as they were swept along by the music and dancing and transported back to Rydell High School in 1959. Producing the show has again brought out the best in everyone and thanks to the cast, staff and parents who give so much to ensure the marvellous success of our show – long may the tradition continue at PCS! The Head Team has been visiting local charities to distribute the money they raised during Charities’ Week. Eight charities were fortunate enough to receive £600, with Children in Need receiving £1200. Recently they visited the Sandville and Porthcawl RNLI Station where they donated £600, and have also visited the Children’s Ward at the Princess of Wales Hospital where they donated a brand new fridge freezer for the parent’s room. This will make an enormous difference to parents and children alike, especially during the Summer months. SCHOOLS Play In A Day At Pil Primary!

Burrows Nursery February half term at The Burrows means a busy, fun time with craft, trips and activities for Holiday Club. With the use of our ‘Bunny Bus’ we have the versatility and flexibility of The Club being separate to our Nursery activities. Weather depending we will be out and about on adventures. The theme for half term is ‘Space’, with activities and craft based on planets, rockets and aliens. A thriving After School Club is also available at The Burrows. We currently pick up from 4 Primary schools, including Ysgol yr Ferch o’r Sger. One of our local schools we have had close links with is Porthcawl Primary, which is the closest school situated to us. The children are picked up from the various schools, brought back to The Burrows and offered a cooked tea, desert and a drink. We are part of the Design to Smile programme, providing each child their own toothbrush to use after tea. We have an After School Club co-ordinator who then organises activities and crafts. The Club also has a Wii with various games, with the Just Dance series being the most popular. A quiet area is also provided for reading or homework time. If you are interested in Holiday or After School Club, please ring Porthcawl 771285

Deadline date for the March issue is: Sunday 15th February

Year 5 pupils worked extremely hard on Monday 12th January to create a ‘play in a day!’ An actor visited the school with a script for the children to learn. They had to use improvisation, learn their lines and develop their acting skills – all within one day. The play was based around the Victorians and Industrial Revolution. Dylan said, “I was Captain Webb, I swam the channel from France to England in 22 hours, I then tried to swim over Victoria Falls and died!” The children learnt lots about Victorian life. Ellie said, “I was a child and I had to work in a factory, it was fun learning the script and I enjoyed performing in front of the school.” While Alfie enthused, “I was a train driver, I liked performing in front of an audience, it helped me remember my lines.” There are many more exciting events planned with trips to Techniquest, sports events and St David’s Day. New Plan Supports Rise In School Attendance Figures

We have received exciting news that one of our pupils has been offered a place in Cambridge University, with hard work and determination these places can be achieved! Bendigedig! We welcome the following new staff: Mr David Blackwell, Assistant Head of Pupil Progress and Wellbeing and Mrs Lianne Gooding, ALN Co-ordinator. Our RE department took a group of Year 11 pupils who have recently returned from taking part in a retreat to Cassian’s centre, Kintbury whilst our Welsh department took some Year 7, 8 and Sixth form pupils to their annual Llangrannog trip – da iawn. Dates for your diary: Thursday 12th February; Year 10 Parents’ Evening, 4-6:30pm. Monday 16th to Friday 20th February; half-term holiday. The school’s Open Evening for 6th form will take place on Tuesday 10th March at 7pm – all are welcome. Please contact the school for further information. Angela Keller, Acting Head Teacher

I’m really pleased to see that there was an increase in the number of children who regularly attended school in 2013-14 throughout Bridgend County Borough. Compared to the previous year, primary school attendance rose from 93.5 per cent to 94.8 per cent, and from 92 per cent to 93.8 per cent at our secondary schools. The increase follows a joint campaign by Bridgend County Borough Council, local schools and the Welsh Government to make parents and pupils more aware about the importance of regular school attendance. With more than 17,000 school pupils living within the county borough, it is estimated that a child with an 80% overall attendance rate will have missed out on an entire year of education by the time they leave school. By comparison, a pupil with 90 per cent attendance is likely to achieve an average of eight GCSEs at grades A*-C - so if you are missing school, you are missing out! The council recently launched a new School Attendance Strategy for 2014-17, which seeks to build on the recent rise in the number of children who regularly attend school, and you can find out more about this by visiting

SCHOOLS The New Year at Stagecoach Theatre Arts The New Year at Stagecoach Theatre Arts has got off to a terrific start. It’s ‘Show Term’, and all ‘Main Stages’ (6-18 years) students will be performing in ‘Magical Musicals’ at the ‘Memo Arts Centre’ in Barry. The ‘Early Stages’ (4-6 years) children will showcase their wonderful singing, dance and drama in ‘The Wild West’. The ‘Performance Troupe’ and ‘Show Choir’ are also busy rehearsing for performances at the ‘Wales Millennium Centre’, Cardiff and ‘Her Majesty’s Theatre’, London. The school is also celebrating outstanding results in recent ‘London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art’ (LAMDA) exams. The children aged 6-18 took an exam in ‘acting’ or ‘speaking of verse and prose’ and all passed, maintaining the schools outstanding track record. LAMDA awards are offered to students as an ‘optional extra’ alongside their weekly singing, dance and drama classes. Stagecoach Bridgend, Cowbridge and Cardiff is owned by local couple Helene and Rob Reynolds, who take a huge pride in their Stagecoach family, with over 400 children attending their schools each week. St Clare’s School News

January was an exciting month for our Prep School Eco Club. The pupils were out and about in the grounds doing their bit for the environment and planted two apple trees next to our Dining Hall, as part of a twinning programme between schools in Wales and Uganda. The tree will now link St. Clare’s with Mgibi Primary School in Uganda, where a third tree will be planted.

The tree-planting project has been organised by Size of Wales, an environmental charity that is protecting and sustaining an area of tropical forest the size of our nation. The scheme plants two trees for every child born or adopted in Wales – one in Wales and another in Uganda. Year 1 class teacher Miss Jones and her eager Eco-Club were thrilled when they were asked to take part, and despite the temperamental weather conditions on the day were eager to roll up their sleeves and don their wellies to get digging – even when it started hail stoning! They planted two Bardsey Island apple trees, which produce the rarest type of apples in the world. Everyone is looking forward to watching the trees grow, and sharing the story of the St. Clare’s apple trees with children in Uganda. Cynffig Comprehensive School News A Happy Cynffig New Year! We have once again launched into the New Year at a fast pace. Within the first few weeks of term, we have already enjoyed a very thought-provoking Personal and Social Education day for our Year 10 pupils, who were able to engage in a carousel of workshops on issues relevant to their lives, run by local agencies. We have also thoroughly enjoyed a visit from Only Men Aloud, who ran a workshop for our budding vocal stars. Only Boys Aloud has so often had a fantastically positive impact on the lives of those who take part, and we are privileged to share what they offer. This year, our Year 11 Options Evening will be on Thursday 26th February. This will run from 5–7pm, based in the School Hall, with opportunities for prospective Year 12 pupils, their parents and carers to visit departments and consider possible subject choices. Our performance at A-level is founded on the ethos of the whole school: we believe in maximising the success of every pupil, in a warm, friendly environment. Absolutely anyone considering 6th Form really should come along and explore what’s on offer. We’d love to see you. Hannah Castle, Head Teacher Tel: 01565 740294

Spring has sprung at West Park! So far this term Nursery and Reception have been looking at Our Colourful Community, in Year 1 and Year 2 the topic is ‘Made in Wales’ whilst the juniors have continued their warriors theme. They are enjoying studying costumes, jewellery and Celtic patterns. Warburtons bakery visited Year 4 and 5 and each pupil designed and baked their own small bread loaf. Pupils have been creating traditional Welsh dishes in class too! The Fire Service will be visiting in the coming weeks to delivery important safety advice – we’ll save them a Welsh Cake! The sunbeams are already settling well into Nursery life and we are looking forward to meeting our new April families later in the term. If your child is 3 before September 2015, it’s time to apply for their Nursery place. Please call for details or to visit our Early Years Unit. Mr Bird, Head Teacher

Nottage Primary News Happy new year to all. The Spring Term started well and I am pleased to report that the children have quickly settled back to their studies after the excitement of Christmas. Our school value for January was ‘Appreciation’ and thanks go to our regular visitors, Mrs Pauline Lewis, Father Craig and Steve Lock, for leading assemblies in the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2. Schools’ Police Liaison Officer, PC Steve Carpenter, will also be busy in the months to come delivering aspects of Personal & Social Education throughout the school. Every Thursday, come rain or shine, Kerbcraft continue to do a wonderful job at school in developing the road awareness skills of children in Year 2. Diolch yn fawr. Well, the end of an era came to school in January when almost 200 battered and bruised chairs, used for shows and concerts, finally went to furniture heaven. The chairs were originally purchased from the Grand Pavilion in the 90s and I am sure many past pupils will have ‘fond’ memories of them! Our appreciation goes to our PTA for helping us to replace the old stock with lovely, new, colour co-ordinated, folding chairs. K M Townley

Beth Margetson

Porthcawl Town Council News

The new year brought sad news about the passing of cancer drugs campaigner Beth Margetson. Many in Porthcawl, as well as the rest of Wales, will remember the fight she put up to get the life-extending cancer drug Afinitor. She organised fund raising events to pay for the treatment, after it was refused by the local health board, and received huge support. Her death is a private tragedy for her friends and family but the wider community, particularly those living with cancer, will also miss her. Beth was a remarkable woman who took on the NHS hierarchy in her fight to get this particular treatment. She was rightly outraged that in Wales we do not have a Cancer Treatments Fund to pay for exceptional cases like hers. Always dignified, she was determined to get Welsh Government to change its mind. Beth fought to prevent a Welsh postcode being a bar to getting life-extending cancer treatments. She was not alone. But campaigners were rebuffed only a month ago when many of them delivered a 100,000 signature petition to the Senedd in Cardiff. Health Minister Mark Drakeford refused to accept it or meet any of the campaigners. Sad. Rest in peace, Beth.

Porthcawl Town Council wishes to congratulate the Christmas Morning Swim Committee on the success of the 50th Anniversary Swim in December 2014. A large amount of money was raised for local charities on the day after thousands of people attended to take a dip in the very cold water. We hope that everyone who took part has finally warmed up after a very chilly morning! Congratulations to the joint winners of the Festive Lighting Competition 2014, The Ancient Brit and The Rock Inn. Both produced great festive lighting displays that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor found hard to choose a winner from so awarded a joint prize. Don’t forget the Town Council will consider requests to hold Full Council meetings in your ward. Do you have something you would like the Town Council to discuss, or would like to attend a Full Council meeting but have difficulty travelling to the Town Council Chamber? If so, please pop something into a letter for the Town Council and ask for a meeting to be held in your ward. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the Town Council website for forthcoming events in the town – www.porthcawltowncouncil. co.uk Alison Thomas, Town Clerk

£250 Million Deal Will Help Safeguard Our Post Offices A crucial lifeline has been thrown to post offices in Bridgend thanks to a Government contract unveiled by Liberal Democrat pensions’ minister, Steve Webb. It guarantees the future of the Post Office Card Account system until 2022, which ensures people without a bank account can receive benefits and tax credits. It also helps to protect the future of the post office network. There are approximately 2.5 million active Post Office Card Account users, representing around 15 per cent of all benefit claimants and pensioners. Over half are pensioners and many rely on someone else to collect their payments for them. This is good news for the local post offices in our area. Liberal Democrats know how vital local post offices are for elderly and vulnerable people who cannot access their benefits, pension or tax credits any other way. Although most people have a bank account, there are certain groups for whom this is not viable and, for them, the Post Office Card Account provides an important lifeline. The Government has committed £2 billion to protect and modernise the network, to ensure that the millions of customers using the Post Office every week continue to be able to access key services. Two years ago Pyle Community Council decided to redevelop a piece of land in the centre of Kenfig Hill and to dedicate it to those who had worked and those who unfortunately died in the nine mines which created Kenfig Hill as we know it today. The square now known as Heathbridge Miners’ Square was originally to be centred on the upturned dram, but after a chance conversation with a member of a family whose father had been killed underground, the suggestion was made that plaques remembering those who had worked in the mines be placed on the circular wall around the garden, within just a few days the applications were flooding in. Just before Christmas the third batch of plaques was installed, bringing the total to almost three hundred. Reading the names on the plaques brings back memories for the many who visit the square. The next project to be undertaken by Pyle Community Council is the regeneration of Rosemount Garden. For those who do not recognise the name - it is the piece of land behind the bus shelter at the cross roads in Pyle. Work is due to commence in early February. Harold J. The internet – your biggest shop window Christine Armsby, Peter Alan’s Porthcawl Branch Manager offers her advice on how to advertise your property effectively in order to attract a suitable buyer… “The first question you need to ask your estate agent is ‘Where will my property be seen?’ With 95% of buyers starting their property search on the internet (YouGov, Jan 2014) it is vital for your property to have the maximum online exposure possible. At Peter Alan we understand the importance of online marketing and therefore we’ll put your property on both Rightmove and Zoopla, and that also includes PrimeLocation. The reason for this is that research by UKOM Media Tel (Oct 2013) showed that a large percentage of buyers visit just one of these two sites. In total 31% of buyers searching for property online didn’t actually visit Rightmove and another 36% didn’t visit Zoopla at all. So, if your property is only being promoted on one of these sites, you could miss out on up to a third of buyers looking online. Plus, we’ll promote your property on our own recently updated, well-visited website www.peteralan.co.uk. As well as our online marketing we also advertise our properties in branch and in the local newspaper. Secondly, it is proven that homes that are well staged sell quickly and often achieve a higher asking price. For this reason it is important that your property has good quality photographs. Ensuring that your home is clean and tidy before the estate agent takes photos of your property will give buyers a better first impression of your home and encourage them to book a viewing, which can often result in a sale. All properties advertised with Peter Alan are displayed with a range of internal and external photos and a 3D floorplan, helping to give buyers a clearer picture of a property.”

Please call Peter Alan Porthcawl today on 01656 771600 for further information on how we can help maximise the exposure of your property or to arrange a free market appraisal.

News Let Small Businesses Revitalise Our Town Urgent Action Needed At Margam Centres Opencast Site Just before Christmas, the mayor of Bridgend hit out at the local authority, blaming the changes it has made to parking and pedestrian areas for bringing about the decline of the town centre. We live in a time where small shopkeepers are increasingly disappearing from our town and city centres, with the result that the more prosperous ones become homogenised while those that are not become increasingly boarded up. Either way does not bring increased numbers of visitors in at a time when shops are under increasing competition from the internet. Instead, I’d like to see diverse and interesting shops centres across Bridgend county borough. This can be achieved by lowering business rates with the express intention of bringing in small businesses that will make towns like Bridgend and Porthcawl look different to one another, and desirable to visit. We all understand the pressures that councils are under. But they are not there to create ghost towns, and there are other benefits to public finances accrued through increased footfall and trade. We need a more imaginative solution to the problems facing our town centres, and the debate should start now. BETHAN JENKINS AM Plaid Cymru www.bethanjenkins.org

Energy Crisis It is the time of year when minds turn to keeping warm and staying indoors – especially on the Welsh coast! This means that heating bills are often at the forefront of our minds – particularly since they are rising while global coal prices decrease. There has been a drop in the price of coal in the UK, mainly due to cheaper foreign imports, and this means that the ‘Big Six’ energy companies have seen a corresponding drop in the prices they’re paying to produce utilities. These price falls tend not to be reflected in the bills we end up paying. In the last five years, bills have gone up – and at much higher rates for those on the lowest wages. For the poorest, energy costs have risen about 39% since 2010 while, for the richest, there has been a rise of only 7.5%. This disparity needs to be addressed; energy prices, their impact, and how we use resources, are very important. The Development Control committee of Bridgend County Borough Council recently considered options for the restoration of the Margam opencast site, which is near the communities of Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Cefn Cribwr and on the border with neighbouring Neath Port Talbot. The committee resolved that no further coaling should be allowed to take place and that high water levels at the site require urgent action. They also agreed to look at ways of making the site safe using existing restoration funds, and to organise a public meeting with Neath Port Talbot to bring everyone up to speed on joint efforts to deal with the problem. I, and my fellow Cabinet members, fully support the committee’s decisions. For some time now we have been raising our serious concerns with the Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales, especially concerning the void at the site - which is rapidly filling up with water. Celtic Energy will carry out pumping once water levels reach a critical point, but a long term solution is also necessary – that’s why our main priority remains making the site safe, and finding a solution that doesn’t involve further coaling. Look out for more news on this very serious matter soon. Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

Kenfig National Nature Reserve Kenfig National Nature Reserve offers one of the most fascinating sand dune and wetland habitats in Europe, and I’m delighted at the news that funding has become available which will help more people to learn about the site and preserve it for future generations. Bridgend County Borough Council has been offered a grant from Natural Resources Wales, which the council will match from its rural development programme so that the visitor information and interpretation that is available around the reserve can be improved. Walkers, bird watchers, horse riders, photographers, dog walkers, orchid enthusiasts, surfers, runners, anglers and holiday makers all enjoy coming to Kenfig, and there is so much to discover about the wonderful wildlife and fascinating human history of the reserve. However, as with all sites of this kind, we are also mindful of the need to strike a sensitive balance between attracting visitors and conserving the reserve’s ecology, so a key message will be to encourage responsible behaviour. Each of us has an important role to play in looking after Kenfig National Nature Reserve so that wildlife can continue to thrive there and people of all interests can enjoy this fantastic landscape – look out for more information in due course.

FEATURES Bridgend Poppy Appeal Breaks Record

Rotary Club Of Porthcawl

The Bridgend Branch of The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2014 has gone through the roof with a record charity collection in excess of £46,000. The Committee, along with our regular charity volunteers and with the support of 1092 Air Cadet Sqn, The Glamorgan Counties Army Cadet Force Litchard, The Explorers Scout Group, The Bridgend Lions Club and Baden Powell Scout Group, all contributed to raising this significant amount in support of the Bridgend Poppy Appeal. Major Wayne Morgan MBE, Chairman and Poppy Appeal Officer said: “We concentrated our main effort on the large retail stores this year: Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Tesco’s (Brewery Lane and Cowbridge Road), McArthurGlen and for the very first time, Lidl’s. This effort resulted in an astonishing rise in our collection from last year of some £5,000. Special thanks must go to Mr Johnny Cowdrey, Asst Poppy Appeal Officer and Mr Andrew Reekie and Jodie Taylor all of whom work tirelessly throughout the collecting period. To all of our sponsors; Bridgend Town Council, Hd Ltd, The Rhiw, Charter Vehicle Hire, The High Tide, MPCT, our major stores and all those individuals who support and help with our charity collections. Major Wayne B Morgan MBE

The Rotary Club of Porthcawl would like to thank the Porthcawl public for their fantastic support over the festive period. It was heart-warming to see so many smiles from cheerful givers on cold days and damp evenings as Rotarians collected in John Street and walked round with the Carolcade and to see so many people at the Christmas Tree Festival in All Saints Church. The new initiative of the Rotary Post has also proved successful. The Porthcawl Rotarians are now gearing up for this year’s International Evening at the Hi-Tide on 23rd February. Why not join us for what is always a night of inspiration? Every year, we spend the evening with students from Atlantic College who give us an insight of their culture and heritage with songs, poems, national anthems, cultural information with flags and mascots galore. This year, there will also be entertainment directed by Mike Plowman, who will lead a group of local young singers. All this, plus a meal of braised steak and chips, will cost £12 with proceeds from the evening donated to fund a water project in Father Cashin’s mission (formally from Porthcawl) in Nalwei, Zambia. For tickets / information contact: Bobby Lewis 772238, Jeff Perren 788093, Andrew Singer 785628.

Through Christian Eyes Who will protect the persecuted Christians? In a month when we remember Christian martyrs like St. Valentine, who was put to death in the Roman Empire because of his faith in Jesus Christ, we find in our present day that thousands of Christians are dying for their faith. The churches of our land send material help but the persecution continues. Christians are forced out of their homes to flee from one city to another as evil spreads. Politicians speak and do nothing. We don’t want to be accused of starting another Crusade, with all the evil attached to their history. So do we just close our eyes and ears while the Christians are persecuted? Jesus said ‘Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:11-12) At times Christianity may seem dead and buried, but history shows it cannot be destroyed. Like its founder it rises again. But the challenging question still hangs over our secular society, who will protect the persecuted Christians? Rev Martin Gillard

SIRIUS One of the most easily recognisable constellations in the night sky is Orion the hunter. The red supergiant star Betelgeuse depicts his left shoulder and the highly luminous blue star Rigel represents the right heel. His belt is formed by three stars named Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. All these stars lie at stupendous distances from us and although they are located in the same arm of the Milky Way galaxy as the Sun, they are actually embedded in a spur that trails farther out into space. Hanging below the belt is the Orion Nebula, a misty patch of light known as a stellar nursery where thousands of new stars are being formed. If you draw an imaginary line downwards through the belt stars you will arrive at the brightest star in the sky - Sirius also known as the Dog Star. Sirius is one of our nearest stellar neighbours and in 1844 was found to be orbited by a white dwarf star. Such stars are extremely small and dense and can be considered to be dead since all nuclear reactions have ceased. This will be the fate of many stars including the Sun. News From The Talbot

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait for the spring to come. Having been under the weather recently and so many of my friends feeling the same alI I want is for better days! But the Guild is back in action with much to look forward to! At the start of our January meeting we presented a cheque for £150 to Blood Bikes as a result of money raised at our Christmas Party. Julia Jelling told us about the very worthwhile work they do, all voluntary so funds are always needed. Mr David Anderson gave us a presentation ‘Along the Romantic Road’. We always look forward to his beautiful photography and interesting stories. February is an important month for us as it is our birthday and we shall be celebrating our 61st year with a lunch at the Grove. We are also looking forward to another lunchtime visit to the Pavilion for one of their popular plays. Our next meeting is on February 11th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall, Porthcawl when Mr Romeo Bassini will tell us about ‘The Italian Connection’. Sounds intriguing so do come along - all welcome. The New Year has started with a busy few weeks; theatre trips in January to see The Lion King at the Cardiff Millennium Centre, and Cinderella at the New Theatre with supper on the return journey. Both shows were enjoyed by all our members. Now we can look forward to our Welsh Themed Evening in midMarch when we will have supper and be entertained by Keith David, a very popular vocal comedian. Tickets are selling fast, so please don’t delay. Work has commenced in the newly acquired Rees Centre, where we’re creating another meeting room for the use of our regular groups, including our twice weekly computer class (for those who do not understand computers) and also new access corridors. Over the past few months, many members have viewed the Rees Centre and are surprised to find a walled garden attached to the main hall. One of our directors has been busy building raised beds, and potting bulbs, so hopefully come the spring we will be able to pick daffodils! Ty Elis - Porthcawl Counselling Service The Friends Of Ty Elis wish to thank everyone who supported the table-top fundraisers at All Saints’ Church and St. David’s Church in December last year and thanks to the Hi Tide for their continued sponsorship. As a local charity every penny donated or fundraised is spent on helping local people. In addition to table-top sales and coffee mornings, The Friends recently introduced a 200 Club which has already proved quite successful in fundraising for this charity which provides a much needed service to the whole of the Bridgend County Borough area and beyond to include Neath, Port Talbot and the Vale of Glamorgan. The subscription to the 200 Club is £12 per year with 4 prize draws each year which gives opportunity to both support the charity and win a prize. TY ELIS is a small local charity providing a free, strictly confidential and professional counselling and psychotherapy service for people with a need for this who find that the NHS is unsuitable or unavailable or are not able to access private counselling. If you are interested in finding out more about this charity or wish to help with donations, fundraising or volunteer reception duties, or are even interested in pursuing a career in the counselling profession please contact the charity. There is currently a Diploma Course under way, the next intake will be later in the year for 2016. Meanwhile there are various workshops being scheduled. Contact details: Tel: 01656 786486. She is a truly remarkable lady. Anyone out and about on February 14th is likely to meet a gangster from the St Valentine’s Day Massacre shaking a bucket on behalf of the heart foundation. Other future events include a beach clean on March 3rd, a tabletop sale/coffee morning in Trinity Church on March 27th and a Lion’s social evening in the Y Centre on April 28th. Also the May Fayre and the Vintage Fair arrangements are already under way. Porthcawl Lions this month made donations to St John’s Ambulance, the Y Centre and the vandalised allotment for the disabled. They also pledged to help the Royal Welsh Comrades. FEATURES Commissioner praises support for older people in Bridgend County Borough THE Older People’s Commissioner for Wales has praised work going on across Bridgend to support older people living in the area.

Over the past year, the Commissioner, Sarah Rochira, and her team have met with hundreds of people as part of the Commissioner’s Engagement Roadshow, a series of visits to learn about inspirational projects and initiatives. A number of these visits have been to view the wonderful work being carried out by Crossroads Care Bridgend around the Local Authority area. The organisation runs a weekly community café at Cwrt Gwalia on Aber Road in Ogmore Vale, where residents are able to enjoy lunch together, gain advice on a wide range of topics and catch up on the local news. The organisation also runs a community café in Porthcawl, which is providing vital support to people from the area living with dementia, as well as those who are at risk of becoming lonely and isolated. While the initial plan was to provide the service for people living with dementia and their carers, Crossroads have opened up the service to everyone, with other locals, tourists and socially isolated older people now attending every week. The team also joined the monthly community soup lunch at St Cynfelyn’s Church in Maesteg, where volunteers cook for 50 people- including residents from a local care home. Many of these described it being the only chance they get to socialise outside their home while it provides a setting for many older people from the community to regularly come together. The Commissioner also gave an update of her work to the Porthcawl Shout group and her team attended a Carers’ Rights Day event at Bridgend Carers Centre, where they learnt of all the wonderful work happening in the Local Authority area to support carers. Sarah Rochira said: “My team and I have spent a lot of time in Bridgend over the last year and have been incredibly impressed with much of the work happening to make the Local Authority area a better place to grow older. “Organisations such as Crossroads Care Bridgend, Porthcawl Shout and the Bridgend Carers Centre are providing so much valuable support for those living with dementia and their carers and to ensure older people do not become lonely and isolated.” If you would like the Commissioner’s team to visit your group or organisation, email Elizabeth.carr@olderpeoplewales.com or call 029 2044 5033.

Porthcawl Inner Wheel News In January we held our first meeting of the year at the Grove Golf Club. Following an excellent meal we listened to a talk by the High Sheriff, Mrs. Elizabeth Singer. She wore her official Court Dress of black velvet with a cream lace collar and matching cuffs, very special buttons, a black hat with an ostrich feather and black shoes with the required buckle. The High Sheriff is an officer of the Crown in a county. It is an ancient office that can be traced back to Magna Carta. Today the duties of the High Sheriff are mostly ceremonial. It was a great honour to have the High Sheriff at our meeting and to hear of the traditions and responsibilities of this office. Mrs. Singer has been a Dr. Barnado’s Volunteer for forty years. She spoke about Barnado’s support for the families of prisoners in the Parc Prison. The Club will make a donation to Dr. Barnado’s in the near future. The joint Christmas Dinner with Rotary in Trecco was a great success. Congratulations to Judy Morgan who became a grandmother, and to Barbara Bridge who became a great grandmother. Tools For Africa - Tools For Self Reliance

Every so often we all need a good sort out. David Cook - our workshop manager and volunteers - spent some time reorganising the workshop. This has meant relocating some of the machinery, grinders, wire wheels, pillar drills, vices etc. We are now able to use the adjoining garage for sorting tools as they come in, selecting tools and hardware for sale, an area for making crates and for packing the kits and weighing the crates prior to shipment. It will take another month before this restructuring is complete. The Ebola crisis has also affected our work. One of our partners in Sierra Leone, the Council of Churches Skills Training Programme is now gearing up for the lifting of restrictions following the epidemic and has asked for carpentry kits and mechanics kits. These are currently being prepared for shipping in March. We will be requiring finance for this shipment, so any offers will be appreciated. We thank everyone for your generous support and for keeping us supplied with suitable tools for renovation. We can now manage with a few more volunteers for our workshop. If anyone is interested please ring 786367. John Hanson, Group Co-ordinator

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Sker WI News

Kenfig WI

The January meeting of Sker WI was held recently when the Resolutions were discussed at length. It was decided that the resolution ‘Failing to care - Assessment of need in long term Care’ should be put forward to the NFWI. The speaker for the evening was Mrs Diana John who had worked as a midwife and she told us about her trip to Kobe in 1990 to an International Conference. The Conference was attended by 6000 midwifes from 42 countries and a wide range of subjects were discussed. Over the years midwifery has changed a lot. Whilst in Japan Diana visited a number of places including Hiroshima and Mount Fuji. She showed us some slides of different places and ended her talk with a bow. We have plenty to look forward to in the coming months including a Pancake evening in February, which will include a Beetle drive. The Birthday Supper is in April. The next meeting will be on 12th February at 7pm at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage. The speaker will be Mr Derrick Warren on ‘The day I burned a million pounds’. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

Our first meeting of 2015 took place on 5th January 6.45 p.m. at Cornelly Methodist Church Hall. It was good to see everyone after the Christmas break and there was lots to catch up on. Lively discussions took place of what we could look forward to in our Centenary Year. With formal business completed, we were given a delightful and interesting talk by a Margam WI member - Gayney Jones, who spoke about quilting. Her presentation was interspersed with amusing tales receiving great laughter from members who were in awe of her work. Everyone wanted to examine and touch the quilts, which were exquisite in design. Even those who had never embarked on this type of craft were enthused by her presentation. Refreshments followed giving everyone a chance to talk about the evening. We would like to send our congratulations and best wishes to member Pat Williams who celebrated her 90th birthday on 26th January. Also many congratulations to fellow member Mary Squire who has been made a Member of The Royal Victoria Order for Services to the Royal Family. Anita Jones, Press Secretary

The January meeting opened with president Margaret Aylen wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year, and two guests were welcomed. The minutes were read by secretary Diane Marshall, and subscriptions collected by treasurer Margaret Williams. The speaker for the evening was Mr Mike Boyles whose musical topic was ‘Hopes & Dreams’ and members were entertained with excerpts from films and shows such as Joseph, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables and Carousel – just what was needed to brighten up a dark wet January evening. With 2015 being the centenary year of the WI, there is a busy and exciting year ahead. As well as Laleston WI’s full programme of events and meetings there are additional celebrations organised by Glamorgan Federation throughout the year and members are already looking forward to the Federation Lunch & Fashion Show in April and the Summer Garden Party in Margam Park. At our next meeting on February 5th at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). We are having a Beetle Drive – a great way to mix and make new friends – why not join us? Guests always welcome, for information call Margaret on 01656 660384 or Diane on 01656 656600. Margaret Aylen

It’s 2015 and Mynydd Cynffig WI is off to a good start. Tuesday 13th January saw us having our first meeting in the Talbot Center – our regular meeting place. Minutes were read by our secretary Enid Rymer and signed off by Marjorie Goode our president. A talk was given by Cheryl Butcher on the history of the Talbot Center (formally the Talbot Institute). Marjorie presented Cheryl with £300 raised by the friends of Mynydd Cynffig WI for the Talbot Center. Next month is our 65th anniversary and we are marking the occasion with a dinner for our members. The WI is a great organisation and the many outings, talks and educational classes put on for us is testament to this. You can participate as much or as little as you wish, not forgetting the walks, scrabble and craft activities put on by us for our members on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month in the Life Center, Pyle. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in the Talbot Center. Laugh, talk, enjoy each others company, listen to our guest speaker for that month and round of with tea and biscuits. Call in any time. Newton WI Our first meeting of 2015 was celebrated in style with a soft drinks toast to welcome in the New Year. The speaker for the evening was Ceri Joseph who spoke about Dick Penderyn - the first Welsh working class hero. He was born Richard Lewis at Tai Bach in 1808. He got involved with the ‘Industrial unrest’ in Merthyr Tydfil and was branded as one of the ring leaders. Penderyn, as he was then known, was falsely accused and found guilty of stabbing a militia. Although innocent was hanged at Cardiff in 1831aged 23 years. The ‘Competition Cup’ for 2014 was awarded to Gladys Medford for her imaginative items, well done. 2015 is an important year in the WI calendar as it is the centenary of the NFWI. We look forward to the year ahead with great anticipation. For more information please ring Pearl Mason on 772657. M. Freeman Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Finance Pensioner Bonds In the Autumn Statement, George Osborne confirmed the launch of two fixed-term Pensioner Bonds via National Savings and Investments (NS&I). These are lump sum investments providing capital growth over either one or three years. They are designed to be held for the whole term but can be cashed in early with a penalty equivalent to 90 days’ interest. At the time of writing this article, the exact launch date in January has yet to be announced but the Bonds will be available for a limited period only. The Bonds will be available to anyone aged 65 or over and can be held singly or jointly provided that each person is aged 65 or over. The minimum investment for each Bond is £500 with a maximum per person, per issue of £10,000. The one year Bond will pay 2.80% gross/AER*, with the three year Bond paying 4.00% gross/AER*. These are fixed rates of interest which are guaranteed for the whole term with interest added each anniversary. The interest payable is taxable and paid net (with basic rate tax taken off). Higher and additional rate taxpayers will need to declare their interest to HMRC and pay the extra tax due via self-assessment. Non taxpayers can claim back the tax paid at source from HMRC. The Bonds can be purchased on line at www.nsandi.com/savings65plus, by post at National Savings and Investments, Glasgow G58 1SB or by telephone on 0500 500 000. *Gross is the taxable rate of interest before the deduction of UK Income Tax. AER (Annual Equivalent Rate) is a notional rate that illustrates what the annual rate of interest would be if the interest was compounded each time it was paid. Where interest is paid annually, the quoted rate and AER are the same.

Borrowing Rates Slashed Some fantastic news to start off the New Year - the rates being charged now on mortgages is the lowest in history, across the board! At the time of writing this week, one of our clients was granted a new remortgage at a little over one and a half percent, a phenomenal result, which saves them around £200 per month on their old rate! As independent mortgage advisers have the run of the whole market, they are able to find rates which you would probably never be able to find yourself. With the Bank of England rate likely to go only one way (up) now is the perfect time to fix your rate for anything between 2 and 10 years, with even this long term carrying the lowest ever rates. With High Street banks and building societies mostly having pulled back from offering advice in branch, call us to find out what’s available, especially for remortgages. On the question of what’s out there for older borrowers too, rates have tumbled and certain lenders are still offering deals for those near or in retirement, with good equity but perhaps without the capital to immediately redeem the mortgage, especially in interest-only cases. Many older borrowers now have the choice between a cheap remortgage, converting interest-only to repayment due to low rates (hence lower repayments each month) or even putting the loan on an equity release basis, where you can choose to pay the interest or make no payments whilst you’re alive. In the latter case, the loan will be settled from the sale of the house on the death of the last surviving partner. And for those for whom a remortgage or equity release isn’t Seaside News | 36

Five Quick Tips To Get On The Road To Saving 1. The earlier you start investing for your future, the more chance your money has to grow. 2. Try and put some money aside that can be accessed easily and quickly for emergencies, before looking to invest longer term. 3. If you are employed, your company may have auto-enrolled you into the company pension scheme, with employer contributions and generous tax benefits from the Government. Take advantage of it. All companies will have had to autoenrolled staff into a pension scheme by 2016. If they’ve not auto-enrolled you then take advantage of a personal pension. Don’t leave it to chance. 4. Consider investing to build up savings for the longer term. One tax-savvy option is a Stocks & Shares New Individual Savings Account (NISA). From 1 July this year, the annual limit increased to £15,000, providing even greater opportunity to start to build your wealth. 5. Regularly check the interest rate you are getting on your savings to see if you can do better and beat inflation. Bartholomew Hawkins are independent Chartered Financial Planners. Bird Watch: Fieldfare

Gardening Diary For February

Fieldfares are winter visitors to Britain from Scandinavia. They arrive from late October, once the rowan berry crop in their breeding areas have ended, and may remain with us until May. Fieldfares are members of the thrush family and are about the same size as a blackbird but appear larger due to their upright stance. Flocks of fieldfares can be seen feeding on worms and insects in fields, often alongside species such as redwing, or in berry-laden trees in the wider countryside. During severe winter weather, and when fruit crops are depleted in the wider countryside, fieldfares will venture into gardens. During eleven years of surveying my garden, I have only recorded fieldfare three times and that was during the hard winter of 2010 at the very beginning and end of the year. I’m one of two volunteer ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden Bird Watch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. Despite the ‘unique’ weather we have had over the last few weeks there are definite signs that spring is on its way. Bulbs are tentatively peeking through the soil and the days are getting slightly longer, making us want to get out into the garden again. Despite the sometimes inclement conditions there’s lots to do both inside and outside this month. You could look to prune your climbers and evergreen hedges as well as cut back any winter flowering shrubs that may have now finished flowering. It’s a good time to get your pots ready for any spring bedding by topping up or replacing the existing compost. If you’ve already planted bulbs in pots make sure they are getting enough water. It seems strange advice given all of the rain we have had recently but we often tuck pots away to protect them from the winter weather. If they are covered by eaves or porches they will often miss out on the rain altogether. To give the wildlife a helping hand this month look to put up some bird boxes for the approaching nesting season and keep the bird baths topped up particularly in any freezing conditions. Lastly check your tools to make sure everything is in working order as with the approaching spring they may soon be getting plenty of use! Pete Ryell, ecogreengardens.co.uk

Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club February is a harsh month! Cruelly, having brief sunny mild moments that lure you into a false sense of “Hey it’s not so bad” but yes it is! Cold, frost and maybe snow (don’t forget to shake your shrubs!). This is the very last month to get garlic in, as it really needs 30 nights below 10 degrees for a fab crop! Place a bucket over your rhubarb to force an early crop (I always think this is mean). It’s time to start the potato chitting process again - how the year flies! Bulbs are already up, spearing the ground with signs of spring, my lovely Hellebores are flowering (green ones are my favourite). These are fantastic plants that thrive in the deepest shade, folk lore has it that small particles in the plant cause sneezing which ‘cast out evil spirits’. Medieval witches made salves from Hellebore that were thought to bring on the fountain of youth (if you have some you could be an evil spirit and wrinkle free!) Did you know – snails travel at a dizzying 50 yards per hour and have 14,000 teeth! Don’t forget to feed the birds - after netting your onions and brassicas of course. Chris Early

Laleston Gardening Club Happy New Year to all - that was a quick year! It was a very busy and successful year for the club with lots of activities taking place. Firstly, a big thank you to Margaret for organising the Christmas Meal at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club - all enjoyed a lovely meal and good company. It’s time to start your growing plans for 2015 and if like me you are busy reading your seed catalogues & books for flowers, shrubs for the garden and vegetables for the allotment. January sees the re-opening of the Club Shop on Thursday and Saturday Mornings from 10am to 12 noon, so try us first for your gardening needs. The next Lecture of the 2015 season is on Monday the 9th February 2015, at 7.30pm, Sheena Crossley entitled ‘Annuals, Biennials & Bedding’ - all are welcome. We have a full lecture calendar planned so watch this space for further details. Until then, happy growing! Simon J Nelson Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Despite many people still not drawing up Wills, awareness of the need to do this is increasing. However, once you have signed a Will, it is essential to continue to review it. This does not necessarily mean that you have to change it regularly, but just keep checking it to ensure it still achieves what you want it to achieve. Here are a number of reasons why you may need to update your Will:• You may wish to alter your Executors. Remember that these people will be responsible for dealing with your estate after your death. Please consider whether your existing Executors are still suitable, and able, to carry out this duty on your behalf. • Have any of your beneficiaries passed away? If so then again, you may need to alter your Will. • Have you had any additional family members such as a child, or grandchild who may not have been mentioned in your existing Will? • If you have gone through a divorce or separation then you urgently need to review your Will. • If you have since married, then your marriage automatically revokes your Will therefore you need to sign a new one. • If any of your beneficiaries have been declared bankrupt then you need to alter your Will immediately as they will not necessarily receive any inheritance – it is paid to the creditors. • Has the value of your estate altered considerably? If so, you need to review your Inheritance Tax planning. • Is there still enough money in your estate to satisfy all the legacies which you have left? • If you have purchased a business since your last Will or been appointed as a company director then your Will will need updating to cover your business assets. • Are any of the beneficiaries in your Will vulnerable in any way? Examples of this can include a disability which entitles them to means tested benefits. If so, then inheriting money will prevent these benefits being paid to them. This can be avoided by using trusts within your Will. • If any of your beneficiaries have large estates themselves, then you can assist their tax planning by inserting trusts into your Will. • If a loved one has entered residential care since you made your Will, then you may not wish to leave your estate directly to them as it will be used to fund their care which may otherwise have been paid for. Whilst this list is not intended to be exhaustive, if any of the above situations apply to you and you would like to discuss them, please arrange a review meeting with Jonathan Powell, Director of the Estates and Trusts Department.

Health Vitamin D The number of children with vitamin D deficiency has soared by more than 200% in five years because parents are unaware how important it is for health, a study has revealed. It also exposed a ‘worrying’ lack of knowledge by GPs and health workers about the Government’s guidelines on the vitamin. Now the public health awareness campaign, which commissioned the study, is warning parents must give their children supplements and fortified foods to avoid a return to ‘Victorian’ levels of vitamin D deficiency, when the bone-softening disease rickets was common. Vitamin D Mission said supplements were particularly important during winter months when sunlight is not strong enough to enable skin to produce the vitamin. Foods such as oily fish, eggs and mushrooms naturally contain vitamin D, but many cereals and some dairy products are fortified with the vitamin. Skin exposure to sunlight from March to October also produces vitamin D. The survey of more than 1,100 parents and 250 health professionals found only 4 per cent of parents with children under five knew that sunlight in the UK between November and March could not provide vitamin D. POEMS Thank You As your arms stretched out in welcome so we felt Christ’s sweet embrace Through your skills in glad adornment glimpsed the beauty of his face When we read our card of blessing it was Jesus speaking peace, And with all your skills in music He who tuned our hearts to praise Oh, thank God, we’ve met with Jesus. ‘Twas his call, ‘Come rest awhile’ And in all our time together we have known God’s holy smile Our ‘Well-being’ was your motive, as you’ve laboured through this year How we thank you, faithful servants, who, on earth brought heaven so near. Lord, my words are insufficient, but we join with your ‘Well done’ Bless our Hebron Hall committee, joyful servants of your Son Hebron Hall Ladies Well-Being conference, October 2014 Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

Brightest Star Up In The Sky

The Sea From Hell

May the lords’ angels look down upon you, As you grieve your loss today, We can only imagine your deep sadness, As you remember them in your own special way. A loss of someone so special, Is always very sad, Especially when there are children here, Who are now grieving for their dad. We will all soon join as one, Together to say our last goodbye, And we will remember all those we have loved and lost, As the brightest star in the sky. David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend

I have never known, Of such a water swell, Waves so high and rough, A sea from hell. The waves so violent, Giving the ships a thrashing, Rolling towards land, Where they come in crashing. Causing chaos everywhere it flows, So many people in strife, But we prayer with hope, There is no loss of life. Buildings and homes damaged, Some beyond any repair, Causing so much stress, Upset and despair. We all need to treat the seas, With a bit of respect, It has a lot more power and force, Than we can ever expect. David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend

A Film Maker’s Point of View

The Choir has two performances in February, of which one is in the locality on Saturday, 14th. From 7.00 pm, Bethlehem Church Life Centre at Cefn Cribwr will host a Concert supporting Prostate Wales/ Cymru when Bridgend Male Choir welcomes its guests, the Parc & Dare Brass Band. One of Wales’ best bands, Parc & Dare is more than 110 years old and boasts lots of competitive successes, a number in recent years. No strangers themselves to competitive success, the award-winning Choir looks forward to sharing the stage. Tickets, just £5, are available at the BCLC venue Tel: 745655; Pyle Post Office; Porters Estate Agents, Bridgend and Choir Secretary Gareth Reese Tel: 07773 170373. Bridgend Male Choir enjoys performing at Bethlehem Church Life Centre and is grateful to Church officials for the opportunity to stage here again. The second Choir charity engagement in February is in Somerset at 7.30pm on Friday 20th at the magnificent Wells Cathedral. This concert supports the local St. Margaret’s Hospice and is generously sponsored by Wells Reclamation. In addition to Bridgend Male Choir, the congregation will be entertained by three vocal soloists, and the Choir’s own organ soloist, the highly talented, Scott Williams. Tickets £12 available from the Cathedral Box Office. David T Burt Media Officer

Regular readers of this column will know that I am a traditionalist, that I make films in the true sense of the word, using movie cameras and not digital video cameras. Pictured is an Arriflex 35 2B, used extensively in the film industry through the 1960s and 1970s, and now in danger of being relegated to history. Designed and made in Germany before the Second World War, it was revolutionary for having reflex viewing, where the operator sees exactly what is being photographed on the film. To achieve this, the shutter is a spinning mirror, mounted at 45 degrees to the film axis. The camera is light in weight, but quite noisy when running, so any dialogue that is recorded at the time of shooting will inevitably have the sound of the camera in the background (unless the camera is housed inside a soundproofed blimp), so the dialogue has to be re-recorded and post-synced to the picture. You may be surprised how many films you have watched in the past used this method – skillfully edited, you’d never know – and the quality of the sound was invariably excellent. But 35mm film costs a lot of money to buy and develop. More about that next month. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Tel: 01656 771775 Photo: Arriflex 35 2B camera

Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society The New Year has started well, with an excellent presentation from our very own Richard Craze, who showed members how to mount prints along with some extremely useful hints and tips for Photoshop. This was followed by a fabulous print presentation by our very own Les Loosemore. What a start to a year! We also have practical evenings and competitions coming up very soon. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Art In Focus This month the focus is on a new exhibition - Maurice Marinot: A Passion for Glass on show until 7th June. Marinot (1882-1960) was a pioneer in the development of glass as a studio art form. He began his career as a painter, studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in France and was associated with the Fauvist movement. In 1911, a visit to the glassworks of the Viard brothers became the catalyst for an all-encompassing passion for glass that would endure for 26 years. Drawing initially on his skill as a painter, Marinot decorated glass with striking, brightly coloured enamels. Around 1920, he began to create his own highly experimental glass forms that he considered as sculpture. A combination of failing health and the closure of the Viard’s works in 1937 caused Marinot to stop making glass and he returned to painting and drawing. This exhibition brings together forty-four pieces of glass from the collections of Amgueddfa Cymru, V&A and Leicester Arts and Museums Service, reuniting them for the first time since they left the Marinot family in the 1970s. Arts Kenfig Hill & District Male Voice Choir The Choir is already fully booked for the whole of this year and is rapidly filling its 2016 calendar. Along with some local concerts the choir has been invited to sing for the first time in Wimborne Minster in April, followed in May by return visit to the magnificent Victorian Normansfield Theatre in Teddington in concert for the Down’s Syndrome Society. In 2001 the Choir gave their first performance in Selby Abbey such is their popularity they have returned every other year; this year’s concert in September will be the eighth visit. But the highlight of the year is undoubtedly the Annual Concert in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. This year it’s on Saturday 4th July, and the Choir are joined once more by their two junior choirs Crescendo & Da Capo. This years show is entitled ‘It’s a Grand Night for Singing’ and with the guest appearance of Porthcawl’s very own rising star Stephan Ulberini it is expected once more to be a sell-out. Stephan, with his magnificent tenor voice, is currently studying for his MA in Opera Performance at the World famous Royal Academy of Music in London - following in the footsteps of stars such as Katherine Jenkins and Elton John. Porthcawl Art Society, held a workshop for Cornelly Scouts at the society’s gallery in the Old Police Station, Porthcawl recently. The scouts were given a demonstration on drawing, watercolours and pastels. Art society members then helped them with their projects, which will go towards their merit badge. It was a very successful evening and the art society will gladly welcome them back in the future. Robert Taylor

Sad to learn of the death of Porthcawl legend Ken Evans. Ken kept the Knight’s Arms in the 1970s and gave many of us our first chance to play live. He was a pillar of the community, played first-class rugby, sat on the town council and was a member of the RNLI. I can only agree with all the wonderful tributes that have been written about this great man. I was lucky to know Ken and recently my mate Mark Jones of The Guzzards reminded me of a funny story when we met Ken over several beers to arrange the Knight’s Arms reunion concert in 2006. Before leaving, I asked if I could bring my then 17-year-old girlfriend to the reunion, and he responded: “It might be better to take her to Jungle Jim’s!” In fact, on the reunion night I invited him up to say a few words and again Ken stole the show with his funny one-liners! His book ‘Knights to Remember’ will keep you in stitches, too. To see all those bikers roar into The Square and hundreds attending the funeral was a fitting tribute to a gentle giant of a man. I’m sure all the wonderful memories of Ken will help his lovely wife Pat and family get over their sad loss. We won’t forget Mr Porthcawl, that’s for sure! Next month, The Cover Sluts’ Jack hits the USA, and The Blims play at the Grand Pavilion on 5th March. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Ken Evans

FAIRTRADE FUN AT THE GREEN ROOM CAFÉ

To celebrate 20 life-changing years of Fairtrade, The Green Room Café in Porthcawl (above SUSSED, opposite the bandstand) will host a retro-themed Coffee Bar during Fairtrade Fortnight. Join us to sample our fairly traded rich coffee, refreshing tea, luxurious hot chocolate, chilled cola and fruit spritzers. Try also our freshly made cakes and snacks and relax whilst we set the mood with a selection of memorable tunes from the 30’s to the noughties. Purchasing Fairtrade goods ensures that producers are covered in terms of wages and production costs, as well as receiving a deserved Fairtrade premium. This premium can then be reinvested into their communities on essential economic, social and environmental projects, such as much-needed schools, or pumps for clean water. Did you know that 70% of the world’s food is produced by 500 million smallholder farmers, yet many of them remain trapped in chronic poverty while shoppers enjoy the fruits of their labour. So, by drinking a smooth, full flavoured coffee or sinking your teeth into a divine chocolate bar, you’re helping some of the 125 million people who depend on farming the raw ingredients to earn a living. Look for the Fairtrade logo and switch to these everyday ingredients – the power is in your purse! Sport 50th Anniversary Porthcawl Christmas Swim A Record Year

On a beautiful sunny morning Porthcawl’s 50th Christmas Morning Swim saw 1500 swimmers taking to the sea, whilst an estimated 3000 spectators cheered on. The swim is a family event with generations of the same family taking part. Swimmers came from all over the UK and were joined by several from overseas who were in South Wales to see family over Christmas. The swimmers, many in fancy dress and of all ages, were led from the Hi-Tide Inn to the beach by Victor Davies and Chris Hughes each at their 50th swim. Porthcawl Coastguard led the procession of swimmers from our new ‘start arch’ through the spectators to the sea. Swim Chairman, Nicola Willis commented “On this special year we are grateful to all who supported our swim. I would like to thank all swimmers, spectators, individuals, businesses, fellow ‘Buckaneers’ and organisations who help in so many ways. On the morning our bucket collection broke all previous records and we owe our thanks to all those who attended and were so generous. Both the Carnival and the Swim organisers, the Buckaneers, have planned a presentation evening for mid-February when we will be distributing our donations to our beneficiaries.” Ian Stroud, Press Officer Photo credits: Amie Lipley, Owen Richards. All photos used in context with no people removed and replaced with families.

Southerndown & Ogmore Surf Report Mid January and the storms are howling. Our North Atlantic waters are 4 degrees warmer than normal, hence that great body of water warms the air over the Atlantic. This warmer air creates higher winds and bigger storms than we are used to. Why can’t the UK just get warmer without all the bad side effects? In wind conditions like this Ogmore by Sea and Southerndown become an unsurfable mush, so there is little to report other than overhead wires whipping like skipping ropes, and Medusa serpant like palm trees screaming, thrashing, cursing and cussing at where they are rooted, stuck. Those palms do look very angry today. David Batten www.tuskasurf.co.uk Seaside News | 54

Tap It Out CC Hi all and a big happy new year. Winter is always a difficult time with the distraction of the festive period and the typical poor weather, however the club members have all managed to get out and we have been lucky enough to attract three new members. With the New Year coming lots of us are making those resolutions and promises to get fitter and lose those extra pounds, so what better way is there than join your local cycling club and pedal your way around the fantastic Vale of Glamorgan, Neath valley or the Gower with some very friendly people and pull your waist line in has a result. Membership is £20. Club rides are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Coffee and biscuits are provided at the TAP in Pyle at no cost to you and a 10% discount and free advice can be gained when shopping at ONITSPORTS pro cycling shop in Porthcawl. However the greatest thing the club can offer is a chance to make lots of new friends, ride with likeminded cyclists and a chance to achieve your goals for the New Year. I also like to welcome our youngest member to the club, 8yr old Finley Morgan. Nicky Morgan nickemorgan@hotmail.co.uk
