DAWN RUN AT MARGAM
Dear Editor, We want to thank everyone who has GET £30,000 TAR given so generously and supported our aim to raise £30,000 to purchase a second caravan at Trecco Bay and donate it to Latch, the Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity. Any donations can be made through Just Giving Karavan 4 The Kidz, or contact us through our Karavan 4 The Kidz Facebook page, or Emyr Owen branch of Latch page; where you’ll find more information about Latch and a list of different fundraising dates so you can get involved. Incredibly our running total has reached £19,400! Since the last Seaside news update, we have held a very successful Christmas Ball; thank you so much to the Fairways and staff, Harris Printers, the auction prizes donators, the very kind bidders and everyone who supported us by attending. Thank you also to Porthcawl Comprehensive school and Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger for their fundraising efforts and generous donations. If we could ask for one last drive we would be incredibly grateful, knowing that more children who have been diagnosed with the awful disease that cancer is, and their families will benefit from spending fun time together. Maybe you could participate in this upcoming bike ride or sponsor one of the riders? On April 30th, Dougy Burgess (07877 891954), Mike Sims (simms.m2@sky.com) and Gary Walford are organising a cycle from Brecon to the Greenacres. There will be transport and refreshments on route for the riders. It’s a £10 entry fee and a minimum sponsorship of £50. If you would like more information on the ride or how to sponsor a rider please contact the guys above. We would love the local community to continually embrace this project and see what we can achieve together - we have been fortunate to have had some large donations, but please do not worry if you cannot raise too much; if everyone who read the Seaside News, donated even a pound; we’d have two caravans! Many thanks again for your amazing support! Karavan 4 the Kidz
Dear Editor, I went for a fantastic run at dawn recently. I took this picture of up in Margam and would like to share it with Seaside News readers. Katharine Walters, Porthcawl

TRIGGER FISH AT CONEY BEACH Dear Editor, I understand you like to put small stories into your publication. If of any interest, I sighted this fish on Coney Beach on Jan 3rd 2016 whilst walking my dog. Google images suggest it is a Trigger Fish. Letters SAVE CEFN CRIBWR VILLAGE GREEN
Have your say - email info@seasidenews.co.uk
SEASONAL SEAS & SEASIDE SCENES Dear Editor, Some seasonal seas and seaside scenes, for your viewing pleasure. Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl
Dear Editor, Opposite the Farmers Arms in Cefn Cribwr is a cluster of houses known as the Cot Estate. It was built in the 1950s with a central Green. Over many years this Green has been used for bonfires, rugby, concerts and of course children’s games – such as catch, touch, hide-and-seek, skipping and much more. Now the Green is under threat from developers. After their initial shock and utter disbelief residents of the Cot Estate are getting organised. The estate itself is cleverly designed. It has a flask like shape, a bottle type entrance leading to Gwelfor, Heol Shon and Heol Castell. The design allows the vast majority of neighbours to see each other and their children across sight lines made possible by the Green itself. The thought of destroying this Green is incredible, unbelievable. Take that Green away and these sight lines will be lost, alleyways created, and a portal to nearby land of scientific eco value will also be lost forever. Whereas now they have an open space for rough and tumble, infants and toddlers will be kettled close to a busy road. The photographs attached show residents of Cot Estate at an initial gathering where they intend to keep their Green. David Greenslade, Cefn Cribwr davidcharlesgreenslade@yahoo.co.uk

FANTASTIC CPR/DEFIBRILLATOR CLASS IN PORTHCAWL! Dear Editor, I have been inspired to write in to the Seaside News after attending a fantastic class at Our Lady Star of The Sea Catholic Church on New Road (on the 13th January 2016). The class taught us how to do CPR and how to use a defibrillator (a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses and treats life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias) as this device has now been installed at the church. Alongside learning how to do and use both, we were given hands-on demonstrations and were able to ask lots of questions. I don’t usually attend these sorts of events but I am so, so glad I did. I just wanted to write in and encourage everyone reading to look up advice on how to do CPR and how to use a defibrillator, or see if there’s any similar events or courses that they could get involved in too! I’m sure we all hope that we’ll never be in a situation where we’d need to know this information, but knowing it could make a HUGE difference and save someone’s life. A massive “thank you” to everyone involved in putting on the class! Hannah Durham, Porthcawl

THANKS TO CADDT Dear Editor, I would like to say a big thank you to the Cornelly and District Development Trust. Throughout December they offered craft sessions. Mum and I thoroughly enjoyed our hour there every week. There was a warm welcome from Adrian Morgan and the staff, and it didn’t matter how unskilled you were, all the creations were beautiful. I am so proud of my reindeer that he has not been packed away until next Christmas, he stands in pride of place in my hallway! The sessions are beginning again in February, and we will definitely be there. Annette Pritchard, Cornelly

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL PRIMARY
PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
It has been a busy and exciting start to 2016 at Porthcawl Primary School. Key Stage 2 has started their new topic, which is Space. We will be looking at everything to do with Space from planets to stars and are looking forward to a visit from Techniquest very soon. We are hoping that we may inspire the next Tim Peake! Our Foundation Phase topic is ‘On the Move’ and we will be exploring the world of vehicles and looking at how we get around. There are two special trips coming up. One trip is to the Waterfront museum in Swansea and another is to see a very exciting mode of transport! Finally we are busy preparing for this year’s F1 in schools regional finals. We are working hard on designing the car using CAD and have started on our portfolio and pit lane presentation. Last year’s team won ‘Best Team Image’ at the Celtic Manor so we have a lot to live up to if we are going to compete with them! The final takes place in March so we will be testing our car as much as possible before the big race. Andrew Wood
The energy and excitement generated by our annual school production banished the January blues. The curtain has just come down on our 38th consecutive school show, and this year pupils delighted audiences with their production of ‘We Will Rock You’. As has become our custom, packed houses every night were thrilled by the professional spectacle they enjoyed as they were swept along by the music and dancing and celebrated the music of Freddie Mercury and ‘Queen’. Producing the show has again brought out the best in everyone and thanks to the cast, staff and parents who give so much to ensure the marvellous success of our show – long may the tradition continue at PCS! Thank you again to all of our advertisers and sponsors – without their support the show would not be possible! The Music and Drama Departments will now turn their attention to our annual Eisteddfod. On 1st March we are holding our Year 11 Study Skills Evening where parents and pupils will be invited to school to make the final preparations for the Summer GCSE examinations. Study skills, extra lessons and examination timetables will be some of the topics discussed and both pupils and parents are encouraged to attend. A NEW YEAR PARTNERSHIP FOR PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL
AFON Y FELIN NEWS
Pil Primary pupils were excited to receive their very first letters from Fairway Primary, a link school in Mbale in Uganda. The partnership was arranged through ‘Pont’ and encourages pupils to share work on a number of different projects. Each class has been given the opportunity to respond to the letters and will work forward to their partnership work throughout the school year. Farm to Fork Project Year 3 pupils enjoyed their experience when visiting the Tesco store in Brewery Lane. They investigated Fairtrade products and designed new packaging for their Fairtrade chocolate bar. The Farm to Fork project is continuing in school with Tesco Community worker Angharad attending the school to run further food based workshops. A Haimes Deputy Head Teacher Collect &
Many congratulations to our Bike It Crew! Last year, the crew, and Miss Bennett, our Bike It Champion, in conjunction with Mr. Roger Dutton from Sustran were extremely successful. They held, and participated in several events to encourage and educate our children, to travel to school without transport, reducing our carbon footprint. There was the Big Pedal, Christmas Bling, (the pupils decorated their bicycles and scooters), and a visit from Doctor Bike, who carried out any repairs necessary to the bicycles. As a school we are extremely proud to be placed 4th in Bridgend, 10th in Wales and 170th in the UK. We are looking forward to the installation of our bike shelter as we secured funding from Kenfig Trust. We are also waiting for the result of The Golden Lock, one pupil will have found a golden lock on their bike or scooter, and will receive a prize! Our attendance last term was a fantastic 94.9%! We award a cup each week to the class with the highest attendance, the children become very excited and competitive as they work out the results themselves. The after school clubs are very well attended, with a choice, dependant on age, of Cookery, Craft, Urdd, and ICT/Coding Clubs. AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor Catherine Tanner BMus(Hons) ARCM

SCHOOLS ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
A WARM INVITATION TO CYNFFIG’S SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING
It has been an incredibly busy autumn term, especially for students taking mock and formal examinations this year. As a school community we will continue to raise our aspirations so that our students fulfill their god-given talents. PE fixtures continue in the spring term and our teams will be wearing new kit sponsored by a number of local businesses. Many thanks to iDropped it - Mobile and Tablet Repairs, James Morgan Solicitors, TriSport – Sportswear and the Welsh Baccalaureate Department of Archbishop McGrath for their financial support. We will always welcome new sponsors to support pupils’ extra-curricular activities. Our musicians have also had a successful term. Our 12 new cellists have visited our feeder primary schools for a recent transition event. The talents of some of our more established musicians have also been recognised with 7 students gaining places on the Four Counties Youth Orchestra. Well done! I was also very proud to see so many of our students representing the school in the Bridgend Youth Orchestras in the end of term concert. * Thursday 11th February, 4.00 - 6.30pm: Year 9 Parents’ Evening * Friday 12th February: INSET day * Monday 15th February - Friday 19th February: School HalfTerm Holiday * Monday 22nd February, 4.00 - 6.30pm: Year 10 Parents’ Evening Angela Keller Head Teacher
Here at Cynffig our students continue to amaze us with the breadth of their talents. Rachel Duffy was awarded the ‘Baden Powell Challenge Award’, the highest achievement in Guides. Rachel was one of just six guides selected by ‘Girl Guides Cymru’ to visit fellow Guides in Greece. A team of year eight students was selected by their peers to learn about the risks of smoking. The students, who attended a two-day training course, are now busy giving advice and support to others. We are also delighted that 7 of our sixth form students have been identified as amongst the brightest in Wales. Students Dafydd Atwood, Kulsuma Begum, James Douglas, Tom Howe, Lucy Mcarthur, Lauren Parry, and Cameron Sim have been selected for the Seren Network - an initiative to support Wales’ most gifted and talented students. The programme is designed to provide opportunities to stretch and challenge students beyond the A level curriculum including meeting academics from leading universities Oxford and Cambridge. Feb 25th is our Sixth Form Open Evening where you can speak to subject leaders, find out about post 16 courses and experience first hand the supportive inclusive environment that is our sixth form. Everyone is welcome! Hannah Castle 01656 740294
NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Happy New Year to you all! Nursery and Reception began a new year with a new topic ‘Dragon Tales’. To get the ‘wow’ factor, the Early Years staff dressed up as characters from castles years ago. Each member of staff then set a challenge for the children from cooking to a mini tournament, making shields to finding gold coins! All had a fantastic day. Next week we will be visiting Caerphilly Castle to gain an insight into castle life. It’s going to be an exciting experience. Year 1 and 2 have come back to school after having a lovely Christmas which they enjoyed telling their teachers about! We went to visit All Saints Church to make Christingles and took part in a special service with Father Craig - this is the start of our exciting new topic about light. Teachers and children would like to thank Father Craig for such a lovely visit. We would like to say a special well done to two of our girls, Saoirse and Cara Moulton (Year 4 and Year 1) who cut off their beautiful long hair to donate it to The Little Princesses Trust. SUCCESS BEGINS AT SCHOOL Success begins at school, so I was delighted to hear that the latest school attendance figures for Bridgend County Borough have risen again, while our school meals are among the healthiest in Wales. Our school attendance stats are now above the Welsh averages for both primary and secondary school age groups. This is really important because it’s been proven that pupils who have regular and punctual attendance are more likely to get better grades and make the most of the educational opportunities available to them. It’s amazing to think that even if a child has a 90 per cent overall attendance rate by the time they leave school, they’ll have missed an entire year of education. Another crucial ingredient for ensuring academic achievement is a healthy, good quality school dinner. Our dedicated school cooks serve up over 9,000 nutritious meals in primary and secondary schools every day, giving hungry pupils the fuel they need to concentrate better and fulfil their potential. Bridgend’s meals were the first in Wales to meet the new highest healthy eating standards, and are increasingly adventurous, as pupils’ palettes have been extended to include a more varied international cuisine. All in all, it’s a recipe for success! Councillor Huw David Cabinet Member for Children and Young People Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

SCHOOLS STAGECOACH THEATRE ARTS
NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS
We are enrolling now for weekly classes and holiday workshops, open to boys and girls aged from 3 to 18 of all abilities. Often copied, but never equalled, Stagecoach offers award-winning performing arts education, with a global reputation. Schools run locally in Bridgend County and The Vale - after school and at the weekend, with weeklong workshops during the summer holiday. Stagecoach not only delivers the best performance arts training, but also ensures that each child gets the most out of their experience, by building life skills and confidence while having fun and meeting new friends. Alongside weekly drama, singing and dance sessions, those children who wish to pursue formal awards can take LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) exams, or Performance Arts Awards. Students can also join the Stagecoach Agency, ‘Performance Troupe’ and ‘Show Choir’. Every student receives an end-of-year report, and is rewarded for long standing commitment with certificates and awards. For more information visit www.stagecoach.co.uk or call: Helene and Rob Reynolds on 01446 772727.
Happy New Year to all. The Spring Term has started very well and the children have quickly settled back to their routines after the relaxing Christmas break! Our school value for January was ‘Quality’ and we really appreciate the time our regular visitors, Mrs Pauline Lewis, Father Craig and Steve Lock devote to school in leading assemblies in the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2. We also had the NSPCC and the Sea Cadets visit school to speak to the children. Schools’ Police Liaison Officer, PC Steve Carpenter, will also be extremely busy in the months to come delivering aspects of Personal and Social Education throughout the school. For the first month of the term, Year 4 classes have been put through their paces, or should I say strokes, in an intensive course of swimming lessons. Hopefully many of the children will learn an invaluable skill that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. School numbers continue to increase and the current number on role is the highest for several years. Dog fouling is once again becoming a problem along the thoroughfares outside school so please be careful when walking. English and Drama Tuition (including GCSE and A Level). K M Townley Ex-Head of English and Deputy Headteacher/professional playwright. Superb record of success. Porthcawl based.

TECHNOLOGY

WELCOME TO THE TECHNOLOGY SECTION OF SEASIDE NEWS
PAID FOR OR FREE ANTIVIRUS PRODUCTS?
After our first IT Section was published last month, we have received queries from our readers which will be tackling in the coming months so many thanks for getting in touch. If you have would like your queries answered in this section, feel free to email me on the address below and over the next couple of publications of Seaside News, I will do my best to cover your enquires. This month, we are covering two subjects which face many businesses every day, Cloud Services and Anti-Virus products. Both subjects are constantly being talked about in the modern day IT environment so these questions might be useful for our readers. David, Westprime
Question from Laura in Pyle: What’s the difference between paid for antivirus products and free (if any)?
SERVER OUT OF WARRANTY & SUPPORT Question from Phil in Bridgend: I’ve got an old email server that is now out of warranty and out of support. What would be the best way forward to avoid massive equipment/software licensing costs and get the latest technology? Thanks for the question Phil. Today, you have many options you can look at since there are a lot of companies offering Cloud Email Services which replace traditional servers that are based onsite. By opting to go down this route, there are many benefits, for example, backup of all email data is done remotely, no need for expensive equipment outlay, no expensive software licensing, save money on energy costs on site (no need for big power hungry servers sat in dark spare offices). The two most popular cloud email systems are provided by two of the biggest companies, Microsoft and Google. Microsoft offering is known as Office 365 whilst the other is Google Apps. Both provide excellent email products and also Office products, which allow you to create Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents via online toolset. Microsoft also offer Microsoft Office 2016 suite with their latest offering. Costs depend on what you need, if you are just after email mailboxes, then Microsoft offer a starter mailbox, which costs £3.75 per month per mailbox. Google offer email and Office Tools for £9 but be warned Googles Office tools differ from Mircrosoft Office products. If you opt for the Business version of Microsoft, this includes a 50gb mailbox along with the latest Office 2016 Suite (with free updates/upgrades to future products). If you are looking into any cloud based solutions and would like to chat further, please feel free to drop me an email. David, Westprime IT Solutions
Many businesses have asked me this question before and for me, its quite straight forward. I always plum for paid for products when I’m dealing with business networks. With the free versions, they tend to be loaded with additional software, which gets loaded onto the PC at the installation stage along with adverts. Also, the additional software components will use additional resources of your machine and affect the performance. For example, you get offered Free PC Optimisation software, which states it will make your PC run faster - these never work. Also, you get offers to change your default search provider to some obscure services. You are best off going for McAfee Small Business or one of my favourites, ESET Endpoint – both are free of additional software application and enjoy daily updates to ensure your machine have the latest protection against the ever changing landscape of the internet. CONCERN AT MISSED CANCER TARGETS IN LOCAL HEALTH BOARD New statistics show that Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board has yet again missed its target for patients diagnosed with cancer. The Welsh Government’s target is for at least 95% of patients diagnosed with cancer via the urgent route to start their definitive treatment within 62 days of their referral. Yet locally only 71.9% of patients were seen within that time in October, down from 83.5% in the previous month. Cardiff and the Vale University Health Board continues to have the worst figures, with just 62.9% of urgent route patients being seen within 62 days. The all-Wales target of 95% of urgent patients beginning treatment within 62 days has not been met once since 2008. Questions have to be asked as to what priority is being given to meeting this target by ABMU Health Board. Despite all the hard work of NHS staff, patients are being asked to wait longer than they should be at a very stressful and worrying time for them and their families. Patients, their families and dedicated staff are being let down by the failure of the health board and the Welsh Labour Government to get this right. RUBBISH CONSULTATION UNDERWAY BCBC is consulting residents on the future of the refuse collection service. The council is putting forward three options – the first is to retain the fortnightly collection of black bags but restricted to two. The second option is to go to a three-weekly collection with three bags. The last option is have a monthly collection with an unlimited number of bags permitted. All options will retain the weekly recycling collections. If the last option is chosen, many people will not have the space to store all the black bags that will accumulate. Those with gardens will be hard pressed and people living in flats could find it impossible. The council must massively extend the range of items that can be recycled before black bags can be reduced. The council is also looking into a nappy collection service which is also essential. Finally, if the option to reduce the number of black bags to only two or three goes ahead, it is easy to predict an increase in fly tipping. And the cost of collecting black bags dumped across the borough is likely to outweigh any savings made on the refuse collection service. People must make their views known. KENFIG NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE Kenfig National Nature Reserve is one of our local jewels, and I’m excited about some new developments which will make it easier for people to explore the reserve and learn more about its fascinating habitats. Thanks to a grant from Natural Resources Wales, together with funding from BCBC’s rural development programme, new signage and interpretation boards are being installed, while a large mural will soon be unveiled on the side of the visitor centre to provide an extra burst of colour to welcome visitors. I say large, but I mean huge! It’s going to be an impressive sight and will depict seven of the key species that are found at the reserve. School visits will also be enhanced with a new teacher pack being produced that will be full of activities that students can enjoy while exploring the remarkable landscape of the dunes and wetlands. I’m also pleased to see that a number of new bins are being added around the site too. We can all play a role in the reserve’s conservation and it is such a shame when irresponsible people leave litter and dog mess there. With the extra bins there is absolutely no excuse for such behaviour. Councillor Charles Smith Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

KAG GLASS SPLASHBACKS
THE DOCTOR WILL SEE YOU NOW? It’s an unfortunate fact of life that this time of year can spell bouts of illness – meaning a visit to the doctor. I have received lots of correspondence recently from constituents in Bridgend and Porthcawl telling me that this is not as straightforward as one would hope – especially for older people, whose need may be the most pressing. Essentially, there are three ways to get an appointment – online, by telephoning or by going to the surgery at seven in the morning and joining the queue. This may sound simple enough – but the reality seems different. Telephones are constantly engaged, meaning that it really is ‘pot luck’ whether your call is answered. A lot of older people, furthermore, are not ‘online’ – ruling that option out. The result is that some very frail members of the community are being forced to stand outside surgeries during freezing mornings to try and see a doctor. This is surely unacceptable? With the technology available in 2016, there has to be a better way. As your AM, I would like to hear about your experiences of trying to book an appointment. Drop me a line, email me on altaf.hussain@assembly.wales or call my office on 0300 200 7337. Dr Altaf Hussain AM Welsh Conservative Assembly Member for South Wales West

News WASH YOUR HANDS Poor hand washing leads to 600,000 deaths globally per year, a shocking statistic. Yet the simple task of washing your hands, aside from vaccination, is one of the most effective contributions you can make to public health. Bacteria and viruses can be spread by touch, from contaminated surfaces, objects or people and passed on. Hand washing is a crucial aspect in reducing avoidable infection; it can prevent diarrhoea and vomiting, food poisoning, flu, norovirus and MRSA. 25,000 people die a year in Europe alone from infections. This places huge pressure on our already pressurised health service and it seems only logical that people take as much care as possible when washing their hands to save the NHS millions of pounds. Easy hand hygiene techniques can make a real difference. It’s not a time consuming task either. Proper hand washing takes just 30 seconds and experts have said that washing hands with hot water and soap for the time it takes to sing a verse of ‘Happy Birthday’ is sufficient. If you have read this and remain unconvinced let me leave you with my most gruesome fact, 28% of commuters across the UK have faecal bacteria on their hands -wash them! WELSH GOVERNMENT FUNDING ALLOCATED FOR NEW FLOOD DEFENCE SCHEME IN PORTHCAWL Last month there was good news for the people of Porthcawl when my colleague the Natural Resources Minister, Carl Sargeant AM, announced funding for a new flood defence scheme for the town. Funding of £2.25m has been allocated for the next financial year to replace Porthcawl’s current sea defences. When the work is complete, this will mean that over 260 properties along the seafront and main town will be further protected from coastal flooding. The funding announced by the Welsh Government has been welcomed by Bridgend Council. Cllr Hywel Williams, Cabinet Member for Communities, said “The current sea defence was put in place in 1984 to prevent erosion and reduce the chance of waves breaking over the top of the promenade. The asphalt has done a good job over the last 30 years, but as it needs increasing maintenance to continue to function effectively, we are pleased to have the opportunity to introduce a fresh new sea defence”. The new design will feature a terraced revetment similar to those in other coastal towns across the UK. The project will not only build resilience to coastal flooding and climate change but also provide aesthetic improvements and better access to the foreshore. Carwyn Jones AM First Minister for Wales

TARMAC BEACH REPLACEMENT OFFERS FRESH OPPORTUNITY News that the so-called ‘tarmac beach’ in Porthcawl is to be replaced after 30 years is bound to be welcomed by people in the town. Although the beach has done a great job in providing sea defences, it had begun to look a little careworn and I heard concerns around Porthcawl that it might be detracting from the attraction of the seafront to visitors. The new scheme is intended to last for 100 years – no mean feat when you consider how famous Porthcawl is for its spectacular but ferocious waves. The proposal, which is being co-ordinated by the council, will have to go before its own planning committee in order to progress. What I am hoping will happen is that the local authority will take this opportunity to think about the seafront offering as a whole and, in remedying this one issue, will think carefully about what surrounds it and how that can be improved in order to attract more visitors. I’ve written before about how people’s attitudes towards holidaying by the sea has changed in recent times, so any new schemes should reflect our modern tastes. But we look forward to seeing the change. BETHAN JENKINS AM Plaid Cymru www.bethanjenkins.org
HOSPITAL MUST TREAT THE VULNERABLE I was approached by a constituent who suffers from Wet AgeRelated Macular Degeneration and has to go to Cardiff regularly to receive injections in their eyes. Macular Degeneration is an eye condition that causes patients to lose central vision when they focus straight ahead. Regular injections of Lucentis can sometimes help slow the loss of vision for certain patients. Because the Princess of Wales Hospital doesn’t have this service, it offers these injections only privately at a cost of over £1,000 for each injection, a patient complained to me. On the other hand, the Heath Hospital offers these injections free of charge, and residents of Bridgend County Borough have to travel to Cardiff to receive the treatment on the NHS. I have since spoken with a few other residents who suffer from the same condition. They all confirmed the ordeal they have to go through every month to receive a much needed treatment to a condition that usually affects older people. Instead of treating the wealthy patients who can afford to pay for these very expensive injections, the Princess of Wales Hospital should prioritise the most vulnerable elderly individuals who struggle to go to Cardiff. FEATURES THANK YOU FROM BRIDGEND ROTARY CLUB
The Rotary Club of Bridgend wishes the people of Bridgend a very Happy New Year and wish to thank all who have given very generously to the Club’s Christmas Charity Collections. Thanks also to Tesco and Sainsbury’s for their support in allowing Rotarians and their sleigh to collect outside their stores. Since it was chartered in 1925 the Rotary Club of Bridgend has used the celebration of Christmas to raise funds to assist those who are less fortunate or in need in the Bridgend area and all the monies the Club collects at Christmas time are used to support local causes and charities. The Rotary Club of Bridgend Singing Santas and its friends in the Bridgend Male Choir were another means of raising funds for charity at Christmas. They performed their own blend of Christmas songs and carols in numerous establishments across the Borough. The Santas’ gift of their time and the support they receive from the people of Bridgend actively reflects the true meaning of the festive season. Rotary is a fellowship organisation dedicated to helping those less fortunate than themselves. To find more about Rotary contact www.rotarybridgend.org.uk, or the Secretary of the Rotary Club of Bridgend on 01656 652181. Alan Reeks President, Rotary Club of Bridgend
DA CAPO DONATION
For over ten years Quiz Nights have been held in the Royal Oak, Station Road, Kenfig Hill and each year monies collected are donated to a local organisation, this year being no exception. Recently, members of the quiz team visited the Choral Suite at the Green Acre, Cornelly to present a cheque for £800 to Da Capo - a children’s choir at their weekly rehearsal. Da Capo and Crescendo (a youth choir) are junior choirs run by Kenfig Hill & District Male Voice Choir. The musical Director of Da Capo and Crescendo, Kathryn Brace, expressed her gratitude and that of the choir to the Royal Oak Quiz Team on the receipt of such a generous donation. If you are looking for a new interest and meeting new friends, the Royal Oak quizzes take place on Tuesday nights and a warm welcome will be given to all new members. Harold Phillips

PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS
Our first meeting of the New Year was held at the Grove Golf Club. No speaker had been arranged because we had to deal with a number of business items. In December local organisations worked hard decorating their individual trees and the result was a truly beautiful Christmas Tree Festival in All Saints Church. The joint Rotary and Inner Wheel family Christmas lunch in Trecco Bay was a great success. Club members enjoyed an outing organised by Diane Richardson to see Shrek in Cardiff on 7th January. The Annual Inner Wheel Service was held in St. John’s Church on the 10th of January. Congratulations to Jack and Barbara Bridge who have celebrated their 64th Wedding Anniversary. Nominations are invited for Officers in the Association, in District and in the Porthcawl Club. Plans for our future activities were discussed. Arrangements are being made for our Birthday Party in February, the District Rally in March, and the International Service Rally in May. This year the Inner Wheel Conference will be held in Glasgow in April. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent Seaside News | 26

FEATURES THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES “Oh My God!” How many times have you heard people say that phrase without really thinking about what they are saying? I often wonder which god it is they are talking about. I want to say to them, “there are many gods, which one is yours?” Can we just assume that since Britain was until recently a Christian nation, that it is the God of the bible who is being addressed? If so, is this what the bible means by taking God’s name in vain? (Commandment number three of the Ten Commandments!). If it’s not the ‘God of the bible’, is it safe to use the name of another religion’s god? How deeply offended would the members of another religion be if you used the name of their god in this way? Is it time that we were a little more careful in use of language, using expressions that mean something, and not giving unnecessary offence. Unless of course, like the Apostle Thomas, we have a revelation of the reality of God that shatters our unbelieving preconceptions and forces us to humbly admit of Jesus Christ, ‘My Lord and My God!” (John 20:28) Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church
PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB
our supporter for attending this awesome carol service evening, which gets better every year, so enjoyable. The Porthcawl Male Voice Choir raised £265.00 for the Porthcawl Stroke Club, so we thank all who participated from the bottom of our hearts - there is nothing like music or singing to fill your heart with joy! Anyone wishing to join the Porthcawl Stroke Club, please ring Chairman Mr Keith Duggan on (01656) 773376. Happy new year everyone. Barbara Matthews
EARTH’S SECOND MOON Since 1846, a number of well-known astronomers have proposed the existence of a second moon orbiting Earth. With the advent of larger telescopes we now know Earth has just one very large moon yet the same telescopes have found other objects that share Earth’s orbit around the Sun. From September 2006 until June 2007 the Earth captured a tiny asteroid named 2006RH120, which was a mere 2-3 metres in diameter. Certainly a temporary second moon and it will be captured again at some point in the future. Earth also has seven quasi satellites, which orbit the Sun at the same distance as Earth. All are in unstable orbits and will eventually become dislodged. The most interesting is named Cruithne, which was found in 1986 and has a diameter of 5km. Although Cruithne orbits the Sun once a year, it also completes a strange horseshoe shaped dance around the Earth every 770 days. Its orbit takes it inside that of Mercury and out as far as Mars yet it never comes closer than 30 times the distance of the Moon. It doesn’t pose a threat for millions of years into the future. GLAMORGAN FAMILY HISTORY Pictured are Porthcawl Stroke Club members, along with Mrs Yvonne Guttridge and Mr Lyn Guttridge, who give up their time every year to teach all the members, through a constructive workshop, how to make a wonderful floral arrangement. This year it was a Christmas table centre. All members participate and enjoy taking home the finished display, which wasvery professional. In December another annual event took place on behalf of the Porthcawl Stroke Club; where the Porthcawl Male Voice Choir sang at the Grove Golf Club under the leadership of musical director Mrs Mair Jones, and accompanist Mr Richard Davies. This year the Grove Golf club was packed out, so we thank all

STEPPING INTO THE NEW YEAR
Christmas is a busy time for Porthcawl Rotarians and last year saw the Christmas Tree Festival, Carolcade, Rotary Post and street collections generate almost £5,000 for local and international charities. The Rotary Club of Porthcawl would like to thank everyone for their continued support, helping the Club to step into 2016 and already help a local charity! In January, the Club presented eight sets of a toaster, steam iron and electric kettle to Ty Cornel in Porthcawl. The Ty Cornel Homeless Project and Morfa Project in Bridgend have now been open for 10 years and are run by the Welsh charity Llamau (which means steps, or progression in old Welsh). They have supported hundreds of young adults of 16 and 17 years of age who have been through the homeless system and have failed to cope on their own. These young adults are supported in developing independent living skills like cooking, cleaning, budgeting etc. and the gifts presented to Ty Cornell will be very helpful when they become independent of the help they have received. Pictured are President Jeff Perren and Rotarians Jean Schofield and Laurence Chilcott presenting the gifts to Ty Cornell Support Workers Hayley and Eve. Ivor Williams

February already, Christmas has long been forgotten, and those New Year’s resolutions seemed good at the time; but it’s not too late at the Talbot. For the older generation, if you resolved not to become dinosaurs, and to learn the modern technology that your grandchildren are whizz kids at, why not try one of our computer classes, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays, 10am midday. Or perhaps you resolved to get out more, and meet new people. Well you could try our lunch club once or twice a week, sit and enjoy lunch, and share stories with new, and maybe, old acquaintances; just come along about 11.45 a.m. on a Wednesday or Friday, and you might be surprised who you will meet – our monthly menu can be found on our website. Don’t forget we have two sessions of bingo each week, - Monday evenings and Friday afternoons, and a Whist Drive every Wednesday evening in our newly refurbished Rees Hall, whilst every Monday morning you can learn to Line Dance (see photo). You might even want to start a group meeting! Come and see our new office space – just call Cheryl on 01656 749754 or email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk Cheryl Butcher
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Home. It is hard to think of another word that resonates so much. A home is so much more than a house. A home is a place, or a dream of a place, where you feel like you belong. Some of us have an actual place like that, a place where you can seek refuge from the world and find refreshment. It is a place where you don’t have to explain everything - where you can be yourself, for better or worse. And, hopefully, it is a place where you feel accepted and loved. There are not many places like that in the world, and we all need such a place. Perhaps that is why scripture speaks of God as a home. “God is my refuge and my fortress,” writes the psalmist. Elsewhere we read, “Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.” Imagine: God is our home. If the home in which you live is grand or plain, a real place or merely the stuff of dreams, we all have the same gracious home in God. So welcome home. Rev. Lewis Rees Minister to Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel Deadline date is always the 15th of the month
FEATURES TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE TOOLS FOR AFRICA
THREE OSCARS FOR PAWS
Always a winner! Tools come in for nothing from people wishing to give. The Volunteers work for nothing and have cups of tea as well! Individuals and organizations in Porthcawl have given support in donations and goodwill. Re-useable tools not required for our kits in Africa have enabled good quality tools to be sold and money ploughed back into the project. Short of fittings or hard wear? Just ask! Other materials are recycled appropriately. Some tools are stripped for spares, some we process as scrap, we call it ‘raw material’. Volunteers have benefitted from making new friends, finding an outlet for skills and experience acquired over the years. There is satisfaction in making old quality tools come to life again and look beautiful. There is a sense of purpose enriching lives and providing much needed income, education and family support. Seaside News has been instrumental in finding new volunteers. If anyone wants to help please ring John on 01656 786367. We meet at the workshop in Porthcawl on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Our next article will feature ‘Always a winner’ but from the African end. John Hanson Group Coordinator
By a happy coincidence Porthcawl Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) found it had three Oscars recently. We are also sending £100 to TG headquarters towards a memorial in the National Arboretum honouring those both military and civilian who serve our nation. As the TG organisation sprang from the Suffrage movement - to educate women to use the vote wisely among other things - we are going to see the film ‘Suffragette’ at the Pavilion. We next meet on February 10th 2pm in All Saints Church Hall, when the ever welcome Ceri Joseph will tell us about Dic Penderyn in her own inimitable fashion! Do come and hear more about our activities. Tel. 772157. Dorothy Thomas

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Tuesday 12th of January and Mynydd Cynffig WI were holding the first meeting of the New Year. Minutes read out by Enid our secretary; our president Marjorie conducted the meeting. Our meetings are held in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 2.30pm. Anyone wishing to find out what the WI is all about is welcome to drop in and see us. We have a talk every meeting and some of the topics are very entertaining, as well as enlightening us with ideas that we might not otherwise think about. Our talk this month was on Innate Health and gave us much to think about. While next month we have one on The History of Nursery Rhymes. The range of topics vary and we all go away with new ideas and a better understanding of how and why things work. Our walking club, craft club and scrabble clubs are looking forward to a productive year, The Glamorgan Show in July means we will have to get our head around the different classes and decide which ones we will be entering in. Carole Budding won the cup for most points awarded during 2015. And we finished our meeting with tea and biscuits. Christine Callaghan Seaside News | 30
NEWTON WI At our first meeting of January 2016 we celebrated in style with a soft drinks toast to welcome in the new year. The WI business was then discussed, so much to look forward to in the coming months. Our speaker for the evening was one of our members, Pat Richards, who spoke very knowledgeably on the History of Tea. Discovered by accident in China three thousand years ago and is now their greatest asset. The Dutch brought tea to Europe and called it Char. Tea is a wonderful stimulant and relaxant and a good excuse for a natter. Our Christmas dinner, in January, was held at the High Tide and was a great success - lovely meal and good entertainment. Many thanks to Jennifer Davies for organizing it. Thanks, also goes, to Janet Davies for compiling our Scrap Book of 2015 so beautifully done. This will be entered into the WI Scrap Book competition. An inheritance can never compensate for the death of a partner or family member but it may assist in helping the person manage their finances after someone’s death. Unfortunately inheritance claims can cause problems, for example, if someone believes they aren’t receiving their fair share of a person’s estate. Even more difficult and upsetting inheritance problems can arise if a person was financially dependent on the deceased or if the executors of a will are accused of not acting properly. Claiming an inheritance is usually straightforward if you are named in the will as a beneficiary. The executors take control of all the deceased’s assets, pay off any debts and distribute the inheritances to the beneficiaries according to the terms of the will. Family inheritance becomes problematic if there is no will or if you feel the will was unfair. If there is no will, family inheritance entitlements are governed by the rules of intestacy. Depending on the amounts involved, any spouse (or civil partner) is entitled to inherit at least part of the estate, with the remainder split among the nearest relatives. With or without a will, family inheritances may seem unfair. Particular problems can arise if a couple were living together (without actually being married or in a civil partnership), if there were previous relationships or stepchildren or if a will unexpectedly favours one child over another. Spouses, civil partners, former spouses or civil partners, cohabiting partners, children and any financial dependents may be able to make a claim for reasonable financial provision – even if the will (or the rules of intestacy) specifies a smaller inheritance or no inheritance at all. Inheritance disputes can occur in other situations. For example, a will can be invalid if it was drawn up under undue pressure or if the testator subsequently married. Individual bequests in the will may be invalid. For example, if the bequest is unclear or if an inheritance has been left to one of the witnesses. Disputes can also occur if executors act improperly, either by mistake (eg misinterpreting the will) or deliberately. Inheritance claim disputes, like other legal disputes, can be complex, time-consuming and costly. Whether you are a beneficiary or not, if you are not getting the inheritance to which you believe you are entitled you should take legal advice from DJM Estates and Trusts Department.

The Big Two – your biggest shop window Christine Armsby, Peter Alan’s Porthcawl Branch Manager offers her advice on how to advertise your property effectively in order to attract a suitable buyer… “The first question you need to ask your estate agent is ‘Where will my property be seen?’ With 95% of buyers starting their property search on the internet (YouGov, Jan 2014) it is vital for your property to have the maximum online exposure possible. At Peter Alan we understand the importance of online marketing and therefore we’ll put your property on the Big Two property websites, both Rightmove and Zoopla, and that also includes PrimeLocation. The reason for this is that research by UKOM Media Tel (Oct 2013) showed that a large percentage of buyers visit just one of these two sites. In total 31% of buyers searching for property online didn’t actually visit Rightmove and another 36% didn’t visit Zoopla at all. So, if your property is only being promoted on one of these sites, you could miss out on up to a third of buyers looking online. Plus, we’ll promote your property on our own recently updated, well-visited website www.peteralan.co.uk, the third most visited property website in Wales, after the Big Two. As well as our online marketing we also advertise our properties in branch and in the local newspaper. Secondly, it is proven that homes that are well staged sell quickly and often achieve a higher asking price. For this reason it is important that your property has good quality photographs. Ensuring that your home is presented in the best possible way before the estate agent takes photos of your property will give buyers a better first impression of your home and encourage them to book a viewing, which can often result in a sale. At Peter Alan we offer professional, enhanced photographs; a floorplan and an audio tour, all helping to give buyers a clearer picture of a property.”
Please call Peter Alan Porthcawl today on 01656 771600 for further information on how we can help maximise the exposure of your property or to arrange a free market appraisal. www.seasidenews.co.uk

Finance OVER AND OUT Since 2008, I have hopefully provided readers with useful information in my articles for the Seaside News. During that time there has been an unprecedented number of legislative changes to pensions and indeed to the way in which Financial Services are provided. I am sure that in the coming year this will continue to be the case and the issues will no doubt be covered on these pages. I, however, have decided to cease contributing to the Seaside News for the foreseeable future but will continue to advertise and be available for any queries, and on hand to provide Independent Financial Advice. My regards and best wishes. Chris Ellis One Life Financial 01656 785700
UNIVERSITY LATER THIS YEAR? It’s the time of year when minds are racing ahead to the end of the summer for this year’s potential new university students and their parents. Having been there myself, proudly seeing my son graduate from Nottingham University in 2004, I know what’s in front of them and us as parents. Once the place at University has been secured, the one key consideration that remains is that of accommodation. Does the student hope to stay on campus or would they prefer to rent privately? Would they feel more at home with having their own place or is sharing with others a more attractive option? Then there is the option to actually buy a place. Pie in the sky? Well, no actually, since many parents are now opting to purchase a property near the University and rent the spare rooms out to other students. That way, a buy-to-let mortgage (on interestonly or repayment or part and part) will be paid for from other students’ rent, leaving your son or daughter to live there for free. Universities carry a list of students looking for good quality accommodation to get them through their University days in comfort. The great news is that a well-known Building Society provides a mortgage specifically for this purpose. A deposit is required of course, as with any mortgage, however the fact that others are paying for a property that you, the parents will own, represents a great investment. In some cases, when the son or daughter has graduated, they choose to find employment in the same town or city as the University and therefore already have a home to live in. Or, if they move elsewhere, the parents can retain the property as an income generator from the monthly rents paid by other students or else, choose to then sell the property, hopefully at a profit. Call us on 01656 782545 for a chat about this – we get parents and even grandparents who discuss this option with us every year, in preparation for the time their new student family will be at university.
LATEST NEWS FROM BARTHOLEMEW HAWKINS Well 2016 is upon us and what sad news greets us with news that 750 jobs are to be lost in Port Talbot, with a further 300 slightly further down the M4 at Llanwern. I am sure that we all have families that are affected by these job losses, and it is so sad to see the economic bite take place on our door step. The continuing China fallout has been sparked by further lacklustre China economic data, which has done nothing to bolster short-term positivity and created renewed concerns about economic growth in Asia and the wider global economy. It’s important to note that the domestic China equity market is effectively a leveraged playground for local investors impacted by frequent government intervention. On this basis, it’s arguably a poor reference for the underlying China economy. Our Investment Committee continues to actively monitor the situation and where necessary will take immediate action. On a more pleasing note, it was fantastic to be shortlisted at a Prestigious Award Ceremony in Westminster as IFA of the year. Sadly we didn’t win this year’s award, but it is great that we are finally being recognised nationally for all the hard work we are doing for clients. Remember initial consultations are free, so make it your new years resolution to give yourselves a financial health check. Ian Davies Bartholemew Hawkins Ltd 01656 347000

Garden BIRD WATCH: GOLDFINCH FEEDING SURVEY I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. Goldfinches have become an increasingly common sight in gardens. If they visit your garden, could you spare two minutes of your time to help the BTO? They’re investigating the feeding preferences of this species and whether supplementary feeding has contributed to their population increase (111% between 1995 and 2011). You just need to answer three simple questions: 1) What are the Goldfinches eating? This could be food you have provided (e.g. nyger seed or sunflower hearts) or natural foods found in the garden (e.g. Dandelion or tree seeds). 2) What other foods are available to them in the garden, if any? Please note all supplementary or natural foods available. 3) How does their feeding behaviour change throughout the winter? You can complete as many surveys as you like before the end of February. For more information about the Goldfinch Feeding Survey, and how to take part, please visit www.bto.org/goldfinch-survey. Paper forms are also available by contacting the GBW team (01842 750050 or gbw@bto.org). Amanda Skull: 07952 758293 gbw@hiafi.co.uk www.bto.org/gbw Follow me on Twitter @amanda_skull

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB The bulbs are already poking their little heads up amongst the devastation left by all the rain showing signs of next season something to look forward to! Once the ground is less sodden (if it ever is!) plant pots of flowering spring bulbs and primroses in empty gaps –a bit of a cheat really – but who cares! Make sure you plant garlic, before the end of the month if you haven’t already, it likes a sunny spot and well-drained soil; keep on top of the weeds here especially as garlic hates competition! Did you know – Dandelions are good for your lawn! Their roots loosen hard packed soil, aerate the earth, and help reduce erosion, also dandelions actually fertilize the grass –shame is you’d end up with more dandelions than grass! After-all a dandelion is the only flower children can pick without getting into trouble! Talking of lawns – try to keep of it when its wet – damage to waterlogged lawns is easily caused (and hard to put right). It’s a very hungry month for the birds, if you put food out for them they will repay you (maybe) by leaving your buds and onion bulbs alone. Chris Early
LALESTON GARDENING CLUB February is a difficult month for gardeners. The weather is very unpredictable. So it could be a good month for ‘planning’ and propagating new plants from cuttings. Perhaps finish pruning roses and dividing the perennials. 2016 is a leap year so we have an extra day, February 29th and it seems we have a National Weather Man’s Day on February 5th. St Valentine’s Day February 14th, because Easter is early this year, Shrove Tuesday falls on February 9th. Ash Wednesday February 10th. Confused? February not only difficult but busy! Jobs that have been put off can be tackled now. Tools can be cleaned, lawn mower checked ready for use as soon as weather permits. Fruit bushes (blueberries, currants and gooseberries) should be pruned and autumnfruiting raspberries cut to the ground. At the club plans are already being discussed regarding this year’s annual Plant Sale, which will be held on Saturday May 7th. Before that, our next evening lecture will be on Monday February 8th - Allotment Gardening with a Celebrity Terry Walton, this particular lecture will be ticket holders only, for members who attended two previous lectures. The renovated storeroom/shop is now reopened. Gwen Bradford Assistant Secretary

Health YOUR DIET MATTERS TO ARTHRITIS Addressing your diet is critical, both for weight loss and for controlling inflammation, and promoting healthy bones and cartilage. Two recent studies confirmed that people who eat a processed and fried food diet high in sugars and red meat are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune disorder) than those who eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, poultry, and fish. A number of supplements such as turmeric, hyaluronic acid, and astaxanthin, among others, may also be helpful for controlling the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. The notion that exercise is detrimental to your joints is a misconception; there is no evidence to support this belief. It’s simply a myth that you can ‘wear down’ your joints such as your knees and hips from average levels of exercise and/or normal activity. Read more at www.naturalnews.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke
CORNS EXPLAINED Many of us suffer from pain or discomfort when we walk due to corns on our toes or feet. Corns are areas of thick, hardened skin that are caused by excessive pressure or friction on the skin. Corns are commonly caused by ill-fitting footwear and pressure on bony areas of the foot, such as a joint. Three most common types of corns: Hard Corns * A small area of raised, hardened skin, approximately the size of a small pea. They usually occur within a wider area of thickened skin and can be quite painful. Soft Corns * These appear between the toes where skin can be moist from sweat or not drying your feet properly. They appear lighter in colour than hard corns and have a rubbery texture. Seed Corns * A tiny corn that occurs on the bottom of the foot, typically the ball. They can appear singly or in clusters. Treatment: * Gently use a pumice stone and apply moisturizing cream to remove the thickened skin gradually * Foam wedges, toe inserts and insoles can help relieve pressure * If you experience recurring problems, contact a foot health professional to seek further advice. 50 YEARS YOUNG Porthcawl Art Society is 50 years old this year. We started the celebrations at Christmas time, working with the Museum and Porthcawl Community Orchestra with an evening of music art and poems. It was a very successful night and brought all cultural aspects of the town together. We were then invited to meet the First minister at the Senedd. The First Minister also opened the Winter Exhibition at our gallery in the Old Police Station, John Street. We are planning trips and exhibitions throughout the year. Anyone interested in joining come along to the gallery at the Old Police Station, John Street, Porthcawl on Wednesdays 1.30 pm – 3.30pm for a chat. Robert Taylor
POEMS AND PINTS
You too could raise a glass with this cheery group of poets in Porthcawl! We have been meeting every month for quite a few years and would love to welcome some new faces. Thanks to the owners Andy and Sue, we meet in ‘the backroom’ of Porthcawl’s well known hostelry, The Lorelei, at 36 Esplanade Avenue. Here we read out favourite poems, or our own, and participate in a monthly poetry writing challenge. The winner gets a bottle of wine and sets the next challenge. There’s no obligation of course, perhaps you’d just like to listen and enjoy the humour - we are not a serious bunch - and try one of the large selection of real ales from the bar. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm; there’s no money involved although you do have to pay for your drinks! STILL RUNNING! Despite real concerns about the Yellow Weather Warning at Chepstow Races, the sun actually shone when choristers entertained from the Parade Ring. Under MD, Rhiannon Williams-Hale & Accompanist Stephanie Bailey, the Choir sang some traditional and lively numbers to appreciative punters. Audience numbers grew throughout the performance with the stands and terraces quite full close to race time. More informal singing in the Premier Bar drew a huge following, by which time the heavens had opened outdoors. Despite a tip for the winner in the Coral Welsh Grand National from MD, Rhiannon, most choristers did their own thing and lost, their horses probably still running! Bridgend Male Choir’s next engagement is another sporting event, this time Six Nation’s Rugby. Choristers are delighted to be singing on the pitch, immediately prior to the Wales v France match on Friday evening, 26th February. Follow the link http://www.bridgendmalechoir.co.uk/bookings/choir-concertdates.aspx (scroll down) to see early March local concerts. David T Burt Media Officer, Bridgend Male Choir
STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK After thirty years in the music business, Phil Jones and his band Sex have come up trumps with a brilliant new concept album, ‘Stop the War’. It tells the story of a boy called Jake who seeks revenge after his dad was killed in the 9/11 twin towers attack. Opening with ‘Before September’, the album soon rocks with ‘Mission of Rock’, ‘Remove the Cause’ and ‘Forever’. Phil has written some good songs over the years and a few have lacked recording quality, but this is top drawer and the production by Keiran Glastonbury is first class! My favourites are the acoustic numbers ‘Children of the Earth’ and ‘Japanese Lady’ featuring Mark Jones on guitars. The set closes with the haunting ‘Tall Trees’ and the optimistic ‘A New Beginning’. If talent and hard work are the key to success, Phil should have been up there with Lemmy and Motorhead, but this album won’t do his career any harm at all. Give it a listen! Finally, sad to hear Racing Cars singer Morty has died, we had many a beer together – a great singer and good guy, he’ll be sadly missed. Keep your calls coming. Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
A few weeks ago, travelling into Cardiff, I saw a very sad sight: the old HTV (later ITV Wales) studios at Culverhouse Cross have been demolished to make way for a housing estate, and the place where I learned much of my film-making was reduced to rubble. It was in their cutting rooms in the early 1990s that I edited several of my films, and in the dubbing theatre the sound was mixed – they were exciting days, for I was surrounded by all the paraphernalia of film production, and it was still a time when celluloid had a presence in broadcasting, although even then it was being replaced by up-and-coming digital technology. I well remember walking down the long corridors, film cans under my arm, heading to and from the film editing suite, passing rooms where programmes were being put together, directors and editors huddled over their screens, or spending the day in dubbing, watching my latest film come to life by having all its sound tracks mixed together. They are days that can never return – ITV Wales is now based in Cardiff Bay, in a facility which, I am told, could fit into the old Studio One. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY It is with great sadness that I dedicate this month’s article to Trevor Owen, who was taken from us suddenly on New Year’s Eve. Trevor’s passing was a huge shock for everyone, particularly his wife of 50 years, Christine and their family. Trevor was an outstanding photographer and the club’s Vice Chairman. His larger-than-life character will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him, as will his photographs and crazy jokes. A small selection of his wonderful images accompanies this article. All that remains to be said about my friend is, Rest In Peace Trevor, we miss you! Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. To make matters worse, she has invited him and his family to dinner! Will the Addams Family have to resort to the horrible prospect of change! BRIDGEND COUNTY KITCHEN, GARDEN & ALLOTMENT SHOW, PENCOED @ Pencoed College. Get planting, growing, cooking and making! If this year’s show is anything like last year, we are heading for a bumper crop of entries from individuals, schools and community groups. The first-ever show was such a success that we have been allocated a much bigger marquee this year. Admission to Bridgend Show is free and there will be lots to see and do. The Kitchen, Garden & Allotment Show is open to all. This really does mean everyone. So, if you grow just a few things for pleasure in pots in the back garden, or lots of fruit & veg on a plot, you are all welcome to enter your produce. The same goes for cooks: we want to see entries from people who just enjoy cooking, baking, Deadline date is always the 15th of the month
CHELSEA BUILDERS & DECORATORS making jams & chutneys, etc. and want to share their produce for fun, in an enjoyable family-centered event. We’d especially like to see entries from those with restricted diets such as diabetics, vegans and gluten-free. As for arts & crafts, artisans and hobbyists, if you enjoy making things please come and share what you do. It doesn’t need to be a competition standard ‘work of art’ be it a wine or a miniature garden - it just needs to be home-made. You never know, you might even pick up one of our much sought-after prize rosettes! This year we will have more displays, cookery from around the world, special diet cookery, talks, demonstrations, quizzes, competitions, children’s activities and plenty of entertainment to showcase local musical talent. Please follow the website (www.bridgendcountyshow.org.uk) links to check out the schedule and entry form for the Kitchen, Garden & Allotment Show. By the way, if you want to put on a display or talk or demonstration please email the Secretary (saulat.abbasi@ btinternet.com) for more information. Saturday 23rd July

POEMS SNOW The blue sky’s have gone, the sky’s are grey A sure sign that winter is on the way, The summer days are getting shorter The winter nights are getting longer, The branches on the trees are becoming bare As the wind blows the leaves up in the air, The snow clouds gather all around Sending snowflakes floating to the ground, The snowflakes are falling thick and fast Creating an area of beauty, but will not last, No artist can paint this beautiful scene This beautiful picture where nature has been, The children’s voices and shouts of glee When on the ground the snow they see, They dress up warm and go out to play They hope the snow won’t go away, They build a snow man with help from dad The best little snow man they’ve ever had, The red breasted Robin comes flying around Picking up tit bits that’s been thrown on the ground The snow clouds clear and snows no more The snow will return you can be sure, The snow man has gone but has left his hat When snow comes again we will build him back, The snow has melted and gone away It will return another day. Basil Walters Cefn Glas, Bridgend
THE VIOLENT RAIN WATER FLOWING The violent rain water flowing, Along the valley floor, Beating the river banks, Until some can take it no more. Although the rain has stopped falling, Over the nearby valley hills, The fallen rain will find its way down, Sometimes running at its own free will. The dirt and mud is churned up, Roughly beating the river beds and walls, Flowing higher than the weirs, Making them into waterfalls. The rivers flow through the valleys, The tributaries adding extra on the way, This makes the water flow rougher, Until it settles down at the bay. RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE VERY STRESSFUL
Then I met my teacher who taught me something new That all those things I’d learned had nothing at all to do With living life with purpose with thought for our fellow man By showing care and love to others as often as we can
Relationships can be very stressful, And life itself very hard, We have to try our best to work at it, Nobody knows what’s on the cards. Sometimes arguments will happen, Between partners or husband and a wife, This is because you’re both working hard, To give your children a better life. You both may need to take a step back, And talk about the problems at hand, Make some changes for the better, No matter what you had planned. Don’t fall out because of little things, Put disagreements in the past, Work at loving each other again, And your relationship will last.
My teacher taught that life is a level playing field That we’re all in it together sharing wounds that must be healed There simply is no difference between you and me We’re all God’s own children and one big family My teacher taught the needs of others and the hardships they must face May well have been my own, if not for God’s good grace That handicaps and weaknesses are really there to prove How fortunate I am to see, talk, hear and move
You may need to sacrifice a little, So you both can gain a lot, You won’t realise until it’s over, What you both have really got. A relationship is about lots of things, Not just about being a lover, The first thing you should both say every day, Is that you still love each other. Written by David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend
MY TEACHER
My teacher showed that happiness is just a case of choice Instead of choosing sadness we simply choose rejoice Rejoice that we are able to experience every day The beauty that the blind can’t see and words the mute can’t say
At school I learned to read and write, to add and take away, Of geography and history and sport I learned to play They taught me all about the world and even outer space And how to beat another as competition I would face
To walk and talk and feed yourself are gifts you should embrace It’s the taking part that matters and not who wins the race And as each and every one of us is taking part in life What matters most is our gratitude, regardless of our strife
I learned of lands and cultures that had a different cause And so we fought and beat them in many different wars They said that strength and power was the thing I needed most That I should conquer others, no matter what the cost
To be grateful for the gifts you have and not those you desire Is the secret to your happiness and to which you should aspire To show your love to others with help, support and care To let them know if needed that you are always there
They taught me to be a winner at my work and play And never mind the loser who may fall along the way Through all those years of learning the plan was plain to see, The only thing that mattered was what I could do for ME
My teacher taught me lessons I never will forget; and I know it sounds absurd But she taught me all of this and yet… SHE NEVER SPOKE A WORD.

Sport TAI CHI NEWS
PORTHCAWL RFC U7’S UPDATE
Tai Chi sequences were devised many years a go by famous Chinese fighters to practice their fighting movements, and these long sequences must then be preserved without changes. Claims made that these preserved fighting movements are good for health are made without medical scrutiny. There is a modern movement to have shortened easier to learn sequences checked and periodically updated by medical experts, and altered where needed, to ensure the movements are truly suitable for health. The new therapy sequences are copyrighted and licensed teachers must teach updated changes, similar to first aid updating, or stop teaching as they will then be in breach of copyright law. In England licensed therapy teachers of the Tai Chi for Health Institute must attend updating weekend workshops every two years to hold on to their license. The workshop fee being £200 each time. It is valued and about 100 attend. In Wales, the Sun Style Tai Chi Association of Wales trains new license holders of their own similar modern therapy by them attending normal classes, like the beginners low cost class every Friday morning at the Awel y Mor Centre Porthcawl. Periodic updating is cheaply done by just staying in touch for update news by continued membership of the Welsh Association. John Jones
Well it’s been a wet December! However prior to Christmas we played two games against Tondu and Kenfig Hill. Although the sun was shining in Rest Bay, it was a very windy day. Tondu were very competitive and it was a great test for our boys. However a great 15-3 result in our favour, the conditions meant that we had to keep it tight, a great learning curve for the boys. The only other game played in very wet and sticky conditions was against our local rivals Kenfig Hill, where they were tough to break down and resilient, another good performance saw us score 23 tries against 11. We hope that January and February brings better weather, which means that we can carry on with the development. The boys have restarted training at Trecco Bay and are drooling at the prospect of the second half of the season. Geraint Evans, Coach

The New Year got off to a flying start for many of our members who joined a record 270 runners at the Prince of Wales New Year’s Day Run, organised by our friends Cornelly Striders. The race was won by a surprise entrant - Wales and GB athlete James Thie, and all enjoyed the free soup, first drink together of the New Year, and awards ceremony afterwards - upstairs in the Prince. We were soon back upstairs in the Prince for Sunday lunch after our first cross country of the year in the West Glam League on 10th January - two laps of the Tata Reservoir in the wind and rain - where we had full teams in both mens’ and womens’ competitions - surprisingly jolly good fun! Special mention to our flying postman Geraint Lewis who is in the top 10 and, I think, leading Vet 35 runners after three fixtures. We’ve had good attendance on club nights at training and lots of new walkers and runners joining to shed the festive pounds and pound the pavements of our lovely town. A special get well soon to Club Secretary Angela Marsh and to our Club Coach Gareth Roper who have both had some bad luck with injuries recently - we wish you a speedy recovery to form and look forward to enjoying some personal bests together, as well as a few drinks over the coming year. As always, club nights are Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30pm, with groups to cater for all abilities. Why not come join us? Will Edwards, Assistant Coach Seaside News | 49
Sport REST BAY NIPPERS
January saw our nippers taking part in the Welsh Stillwater Championships held at Cardiff International Pool. 14 clubs from all over Wales took part, and it was an all day competition with different events - including Boards and Manikins. All the club’s Nippers did amazingly, and a great day was had by all. Our Nippers did our club very proud and were rewarded by winning the competition -making us Welsh Stillwater Champions 2016, this being the 3rd year that our club have won it. A fantastic day with amazing kids. If you would like more information on joining our nippers at Rest Bay SLSC please contact Chris by email chris. howells5@btinternet.com
TAP IT OUT CC First of all, a big happy new year to the entire club membership and hopefully we can enjoy another successful year ahead. Riders are again setting their challenges early, and for most training is well on its way. A number of riders are taking on the Tour of Flanders and the Barcelona to Monaco events. Both promising to be very difficult rides. Also the regular sportive calendar will provide riders with a weekly challenge and the more local events will hopefully see the club jersey on parade in large numbers. Tap It Out CC is now into its third year, not bad for a bunch of newbie cyclists. In this time we have achieved the following. The membership have helped raised just over £15,000, had 132 different cyclists ride with us and membership currently stands at 94. Facebook membership shows 537. The club have attended rides in Italy, Majorca, France, and Belgium and all over the UK. Club rides are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and also a shift workers ride posted most days on Facebook. All new members welcome so any questions please contact me on nickemorgan@ hotmail.co.uk. Stay safe and KEEP ON TAPPING. Nicky Morgan

SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE SURF REPORT After week after week of storms through December and January, all the good work the gentle, creative, warm and soft summers breezes has been undone. 30+ years ago when I first started surfing there was a well-known and classic lefthander that would peel to the left of the river mouth for 100 yards and wall up into the mouth of the river and deeper water where one could drift back out into the line up with ease. A paddle-around surf break. Unfortunately all the rain and swollen torrent river water has washed away the sand and pebble which built up bank, and gently settled and created a new wave formation over last summer. The wave was growing week by week as the bank built up to form a lovely peeling wave. Each time I visited there for a surf the wave had grown in quality. Everyone was talking about it on the social surf scene. And now it’s been vandalised by storms and has gone in one overnight downpour. Hopefully the same pebble and sand bank will begin to build up again when the rain storms go as we slip into spring. We’ll see. It will be, as always, down to wind strengths and direction, amount of rainfall and size of tides. David Anthony Batten tuskasurf.co.uk
