Letters DOG, CAT & HORSE MESS
Dear Editor, In support of B Mace’s letter in January issue regarding the above issues. I live next to the park in Anglesey way with my wife and three young children. As with most of the park users, we are continually blighted by the amount dog mess left in the lane. If anyone with young children attend this park I’m sure you will all agree it is like running the gauntlet to see if you can make it into the park without your children ending up with dog mess on their shoes. On Monday 1st of January I was collecting my son from his friends in Long Acre Drive when again I had to dodge a small fresh amount of mess. Then further up the lane I was subjected to a larger amount, which some unfortunate person had trodden through and most likely carried it home with them. Apologises if these photos offend but this is what we are subjected to on a daily if not weekly occurrence. On my return I was greeted with my elderly neighbour Jean hosing down horse mess from in front of her and other properties. As you can see most if it has been washed away but why should Jean be made to clear up other peoples animals waste. Jean said she had spoken to three female horse riders previously and asked if they could carry buckets and shovels to clean up after their animals. Jean was told it would be inconvenient for them to do so, well I’m pretty sure it is more inconvenient for those made to make their children dodge dog mess on the way to park or elderly people to clean up horse muck from outside their properties. Now there will be plenty of people who describe themselves as responsible owners and that horse muck is not as bad as dog mess, blah, blah, blah. All animal mess is animal mess and when irresponsible owners leave it for others to avoid or to clean up is a disgrace. Gavin Ansen Nottage, Porthcawl
PORTHCAWL PEOPLE PLAN Dear Editor, Your column regularly features letters from readers, some angry and some frustrated at the lack of progress in regenerating our town. What the correspondents show is that there are plenty of ideas and motivation to improve our town. We need to harness this wealth of talent and ideas. The time is right to create the ‘Porthcawl People Plan’. The plan will need to be viable, deliverable and professional, it will need to link into the Bridgend Tourism Destination Plan and other policies and comply with planning requirements. It does not need to be a carpet of houses. The Porthcawl People Plan will come from and be inspired by the community: Business, Residents and Visitors. Seaside News | 8
Have your say - email: info@seasidenews.co.uk
Working together: Porthcawl Shout, Porthcawl Civic Trust and a small group of local people are promoting the ‘Porthcawl People Plan’. We are seeking ideas and views from across the town to develop a community inspired plan for the benefit of current and future generations of Porthcawl to present to Bridgend County Borough Council. The Y Centre main hall will be open from 10am until 7pm on Saturday 18th February 2017 where there will be a drop in event with experts on hand where you can have your say and share your aspirations and ideas for Porthcawl, and, if you want to, join the ’PPP’ team. The ‘Porthcawl People Plan’ will cover from Rest Bay in the West through town and Station Hill, extending to Newton in the East. We hope to see you there and hear your views. Mike Clarke, Porthcawl
ST CLARE’S SCHOOL REUNION
Dear Editor, “It’s been 50 years!” A group of the former St Clare’s Convent Grammar School pupils met in early December, to celebrate the fact it had been 50 years since they started the Grammar school. There had been no previous reunions of this group who attended the school between 1966-1973. Mr Simon Antwis the current Headmaser of St Clare’s, kindly agreed to host a school visit. A reunion lunch (including two of our former teachers) followed the next day at the Atlantic hotel. For those who attended the school visit, the visit was described as “amazing, moving and very enjoyable, a trip down memory lane; the staff and pupils made us feel very welcome; it’s not quite the same school as we attended but we loved it; the visit exceeded my expectations, it was so worthwhile; the senior girls choir sang beautifully for us and truly moved us”. Former pupils have followed interesting careers and several travelled from afar including one from Australia and one from the USA. The group intend to keep in touch and raised funds for a ‘reunion prize’. Everyone throughly enjoyed renewing friendships. Our thanks go to those of the group who initiated and organised the reunion. We are still trying to find fellow pupils in our year group. Anyone interested in joining our group, please write to St Clare’s School. Dr Sally Pugh Williams

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM
FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS
“They’re having it in Swansea,” exclaimed a Porthcawlian. February 19th-21st 1941 Swansea sustained 30,000 incendiary bombs. The Luftwaffe’s objective was to destroy Swansea Docks and Railway Station. ‘The Swansea Blitz’ was so savage that, in the distance, raging fires lit up the Swansea sky, amidst incessant noise. Porthcawlians still talk of witnessing the sight and hearing the constant rumbling in their homes. Auxiliary Firemen were drafted into Swansea from all over the region, including Porthcawl, to help combat the inferno. Apart from an incendiary bomb dropped on Newton the previous September, and bombs falling in the sea between Ogmore and Porthcawl later in November, Porthcawl was largely unaffected. Locally, Porthcawl proved to be less prominent in the Luftwaffe’s objectives, unlike Stormy Down RAF Base, which had suffered bombing in August 1940. However, as Stormy Down became more established as an RAF Base, on 9th November 1941, 46 Air-Sea Rescue Unit was formed at Porthcawl, operating out of the Jennings building. An exhibition, exploring all these aspects, opens in June at the Museum. It supports the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at ‘Parc Stormy’, in early July, dedicated to all those who flew from or worked at the air base. If you have any relevant memories please get in touch. 01656788853 or porthcawlmuseum@hotmail.co.uk Ceri Joseph

PENCOED PUPILS COLLECT FOR FOODBANK
HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY TO PORTHCAWL PRIMARY!
Year 12 pupils as part of their Skills Challenge for their Welsh Baccalaureate qualification have been working together with Bridgend Foodbank. During the Christmas period, the foodbank rely even more heavily on donations from the public as their organisation is 50% busier in the lead up to Christmas. As a fun way to collect food donations from pupils, Year 12 pupils organised a Christmas Food Hamper Competition. The aim of the competition was for each pupil to bring in an item of non-perishable food as a donation, and for each registration group to pool together their donations to make a hamper. They had collected enough food to feed 12 families of 4 over the Christmas period.
2017 is a very special year for Porthcawl Primary as we celebrate our 50th Birthday! The school first opened its doors in 1967 and we have had many people through those doors since then. To celebrate this special birthday we will be holding a summer celebration. We are also looking for past pupils who went to Porthcawl Primary when the school first opened to share their memories and come in and visit us. If you came to Porthcawl Primary in the early years or you know someone who did please let us know. As part of our celebration our school community is also writing a song. The song will be a celebration of everything that is great at Porthcawl Primary and we will sing it in assemblies once it is finished. Over the last few years we have worked closely with Bridgend College when we wrote and recorded two songs as part of the SMILE project and we look forward to working with them and visiting their recording studios again. Finally our school website has been upgraded for the new year. If you would like to visit and have a look go to www.porthcawlprimaryschool.co.uk. Andrew Wood Head Teacher
CEFN CRIBWR PRIMARY BIRD FEEDERS
EXPLORE WHAT CYNFFIG HAS TO OFFER
Year 6; the eldest class in Cefn Cribwr Primary school and Year 2 have worked collaboratively, learning about a new story created by Michael Morpurgo and featured on a Waitrose advert named ‘Coming Home’. This interesting, creative book features a Robin determined to get home and find his true love, this story is heart-warming and is definitely a tearjerker for all ages. As part of the initiative we have been making bird feeders in our classes and have produced over 100 in total. We have sold them at the small fee of 50p and intend to make a profit! We want to pay back the money spent on the ingredients that we used to make the bird feeders. We also wanted to buy some snacks for our End of Term party from the profit that we hoped to make. We thought it was a good idea to give some of our profit to a children’s charity who bought toys for less fortunate children at Christmas time. We felt that we needed to raise money to help those who need our help desperately. Written by: Rylee Wood & Rhys Cryer (Year 6 Cefn Cribwr Primary School)
2017 has already made its mark! Brothers Ellis and Iestyn Bentley have both achieved their first degree black belt in Taekwondo. The boys who train twice a week with Silver Dragon Taekwondo have worked solidly for six years to realise this amazing achievement. Year 13 student Courtney Williams a Master Air Cadet (the highest classification possible) successfully completed her Method of Instruction course. Congratulations to Staff Cadet Sergeant Williams who will now deliver lessons to other cadets. Sixth Formers Thomas Cullen, Keiran Jenkins, Katlyn Symons and Alyx Forester have been busy working with the Engineering Team at Sony to develop a health monitoring system for their Raspberry Pi production line. The students representing Cynffig in this year’s Engineering Education Scheme for Wales recently spent two days at Swansea University manufacturing a number of components which will form part of a prototype ‘Smart Sensor Network’. Finally I’d like to invite prospective pupils, parents and carers to our Year 11 Option Evening March 2nd. From 5-7pm there will be an opportunity to visit departments, speak to staff and experience firsthand the opportunities Cynffig provides for its sixth form learners. Warm friendly and successful come along and explore what Cynffig has to offer! Hannah Castle Head Teacher (01656) 740294
PIL PRIMARY PUPILS RETURNED TO SCHOOL TO AN ENGAGING START Warburtons visited Class 3 as part of their ‘Global Gourmet’ topic and held an exciting bread making session. The pupils learnt how to prepare for cooking, how to make healthy food choices using the eatwell guide and followed the Warburtons recipe to make delicious bread rolls. The class have also visited Tesco in Bridgend to take part in the ‘Farm to Fork’ project. Pupils were given a tour of the store and opportunities to investigate Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance products. A Tesco representative has worked with the pupils in class to make healthy stripy berry desserts and to compare food labels on breakfast cereals. They are looking forward to their international food tasting week in February. Mrs A Casey-Haimes, Deputy Head Teacher Seaside News | 16

We wish all our pupils the best with their results, and would like to congratulate them on the effort they have already put in this year. Our football, rugby and netball teams have been training during lunch times and after school and have already had some great results this term. We’re also very proud of our junior X-Country squad who are benefitting from the additional training/ coaching at X-Country club on a Wednesday lunchtime from our expert runner/ coach in Year 11 Donovan Williams-Hale. ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL With Christmas a distant memory upon us, we focus upon a new year, new term and the challenges ahead. As a school community we will continue to raise our aspirations so that our students fulfill their God-given talents. The Archbishop McGrath School Parliament have been fully involved and proactive in their first term as a reformed parliamentary body. After recruiting members and appointing key roles, they have been involved in a learner voice commissioned by the local council about standards of schooling and are planning to liaise with Steven Kinnock MP about how else they can have a positive impact within our school and local community. Additionally, the newly appointed Head Boy and Girl, Josh Wallace and Lucy Clare, have also reformed their roles, taking them to new heights and responsibilities including attending Westminster Palace. Many congratulations to our pupils who, after rigorous entry procedures, have been offered places to study at Cambridge University. Lydia Pickett has been offered a place at St Catharine’s College to read Medicine, and Alexandra Hunt has been offered a place to study Veterinary Science at Pembroke College. Competition was particularly stringent for these highly competitive courses, so extremely well done to both girls! You may have heard about PISA results recently in the press. News is not all bad for Wales; we are delighted here at Porthcawl Comprehensive at how our results stand up against the rest of the UK. Country Science Maths Reading England 512 493 500 N. Pupils presented Catrin Hall from the WAA with a cheque for £1400 when she came into school in December. Interact also held a Krispy Kreme doughnut sale in aid of the RNLI and Simon Emms from the Porthcawl Lifeboat Station visited school and received a cheque for £120 on their behalf. A LIGHTHOUSE LOVE BURGLARS petrified of burglars STORY FROM PORTHCAWL I’m Intruders in my house In the year 1857 a lighthouse keeper named Cecil worked 6 months on 6 off. His wife Ethel always waited on his day of return at the quayside to meet his lighthouse vessel. Cecil always on his last night there would send a sparkling green rocket up to show his love for his wife and for the next 6 months they would live in blissful harmony. The night before he was collected there was a storm like never seen before. And when the boat came to collect Cecil he was nowhere to be found and his daily log neatly bound. Ethel remained a widow and each night would look out to the lighthouse before bed. Believing that Cecil her love of her life was still in the abandoned lighthouse and not dead. Ethel now in ill health and bed ridden could still see, as the cottage was by the sea, the abandoned lighthouse in the moonlight. Suddenly she saw a sparkling green rocket above the lighthouse, Ethel gently smiled with a tear in her eye and passed away that night. That very night a paddle steamer had gone off course due to a freak storm, however all the 237 passengers were saved due to a mysterious sparkling green rocket that alerted and gave the Captain the alarm. Newspapers reported that some passengers on board had seen a woman and man on top of the lighthouse in the glow of the sparkling green rocket flare. Was it the ghost of Ethel and Cecil? For I was one of the ship’s passengers and just wanted to share. Alun Davies, Porthcawl
CHRISTMAS WISHES
And so this is Christmas, another year done Let’s hope that the next one will be as much fun Perhaps our new PM, the esteemed Mrs May Will admit she was lying when she said we should stay And the ex mayor Boris and his mate Duncan Smith Will call a full stop to creating the myth That GB will thrive if we stop immigration And abandoning Europe creates a free nation But, more than this, is my fervent hope That Christmas TV’s not soap after soap And Jezza’s dethroned and next May we see Liverpool back at the top of the tree. Jim Kyle, North Cornelly Seaside News | 20
And when I lie in bed at night I’m quiet as a mouse Is someone coming up the stairs I hold my breath I say my prayers! I might have breathed too loud I think Or was it gurgling in the sink The tank is groaning Walls are thin This noise at night The quiet din I’m petrified of burglars Or people that I’ll meet When lying in my bed at night And trying to go to sleep What’s that I hear! A little tweet The sound of stirring in the street! Morn is coming, its first light Phew! I’ve made it through another night. Patrice Schmidt, Porthcawl
THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Time to get up, Mam has called Santa’s been with toys. That was in the 30/40’s When we were little boys. The night before, Christmas Eve, We sang our way up stairs. All tucked up to go to sleep, After saying prayers. Dad prepared the fireplace, The mornings were so cold. So we could have the comfort, For, surprises that unfold. Little bundles in the parlour, For each of a stack. Parcels in Christmas wrapping, Waiting to unpack. A stocking with some fruit and nuts, Chocolate or a sweet. Dandy, Beano annuals. On each and every seat. Memories to cherish, From the my childhood days. Quite sure that I am not alone, We all had different ways. Christmas comes but once a year, as families get together. A time for joy and happiness, Never mind the weather. Another year we have to wait To enjoy a Christmas Day. It will come, be patient, Don’t wish your life away. Derek Evans, Pyle
ST VALENTINE
Over-priced red roses, Chocolate, none but the best, Superlatives of devotion, Expense seemingly the quest. Not this the Valentine I seek But a love that is deep and true For the saint of old feared not to die To bring love to me and to you Beware the commercial Valentine True love, you lie not here Fear not the Saint might pass you by For we all are loved and dear Treasure the true devotion Of a child’s sweet warm embrace Or response of one now old and frail Love lighting up her face And know we all are loved by God Who gave his only Son And may we spread, as Valentine, His love to everyone. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
WAITING FOR TOM
Toms red wellingtons are by the fire gently steaming Today they had plopped him in childhood reflections The’d slipped him sideways to wallow in brown sticky mud They dirtied his coat and coloured his memory They stopped him just in time to smooth the snouts of the lonely ponies One boot ran faster than the other and got left on the bank And then they grew tired and could walk no more They knew when it was time and turned and squelshed through the curled and shiny grass for home There was mud on the floor and walls There was mud on the door But now they stand forlorn and tired Just drying by the fire Storing up mischief and naughty tales for next time Just waiting for Tom John Carroll (gone but not forgotten) Coity, Bridgend

POEMS THE FUNNY THINGS MY GRANDCHILDREN SAY God made me didn’t he Nanny? Yes and mummy and daddy helped Who stuck my head on? I want to be a vegetarian. I hate carrots anyway. My doll doesn’t know how to smile. When I was in mummy’s tummy I peeped out and I saw you Nanny And you waved at me. Where’s your hair gone Grampa? Oh I lost it a longtime ago No you haven’t it’s just slipped down the back. My stupid shoes are making me go in the puddles. Dear Father Christmas I am hoping for a castle but if not thankyou anyway. Dear Father Christmas I wasn’t expecting all of this. Why have you got 2 vests on? Mummy told me to put on a clean one.

WAKE UP POSITIVE TOMORROW
When I was in mummy’s tummy I was bored. Its Nannys birthday today. Is she 100? My gold fish are dropping down like dead flies. Your talent is football Any your sisters is athletics Yours is bundling socks Nanny. My daddy can make a cheesecake in 2 minutes flat. When I’m big I’m going to have a boy friend And it’s going to be daddy. If it’s scary Nanny Put a cushion over your face. Look at the state on that apple. Nanny doesn’t do messy. Mummy and daddy are always smooching. What’s the best thing about your family? It’s Nanny. Sue Waters, Porthcawl

We can all make decisions, We can make our own choices, Don’t let others walk over you, Speak up and use your voices. There is no need to just follow others, Who are going at a slower speed, Stand up for what you believe in, Be strong and learn to lead. There will always be those individuals, Who always seem to just fit into place, Whilst others have to work harder, And every day run off their face. Don’t look at all the negatives in your life, Look at all that you have achieved, Ask for help and spiritual guidance, From those in which you believe. HARBOURSIDE NEWS This month, we’d like to tell you more about SeaQuest – our Coastal Science and Discovery division. SeaQuest Coastal Science & Discovery Centre will be housed within the new Maritime Centre when it’s completed, but the team – led by Claire Godfrey and Anne Davidson – are already busy visiting schools and groups, delivering outreach sessions to children of all ages. They are dedicated to educating people about the coast that surrounds us, through a combination of tabletop exhibits, indoor activities, beach cleans, discovery days, rockpool rambles and marine life talks. They also take the Sea Bus Mobile Aquarium out and about, complete with Starfish, Crabs and other sea creatures - which particularly delights the younger children. Additionally, SeaQuest are now helping local Brownies and Cubs achieve their ‘Science Investigator’ and ‘Environment’ badges. This year’s SeaQuest program is currently being finalised, and our next scheduled event – a beach clean - will take place during half-term, on 23rd February 2017, from 11am – 2pm. We will be meeting outside the Lifeguard Hut at Rhych Point. Booking is required, and you can book your place by simply emailing: bookings@porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk or by calling Claire on 07816 456905. You can find more information at www.porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk. Jayne Bowden
CYCLE ROUTE NOW CONNECTS POPULAR BEACHES As a keen cyclist, I’m delighted to see that work has now been completed along Porthcawl seafront, which makes it easier to ride between Rest Bay and Sandy Bay. Visitors to the esplanade and coastline in recent months will have noticed work being carried out which has included footways being widened, new tactile paving, better drainage, and some resurfacing. Four sets of bike racks have also been placed along the route. Not only do the improvements make it more enjoyable to ride along the coastline for leisure purposes, but they also encourage ‘active travel’ as it is now more practical for people to walk or cycle their everyday journeys, such as to school or work. The scheme forms part of the National Cycle Network Route 88, and is the latest step towards our long-term aspiration of improving the local cycle network further so that Porthcawl town centre is connected with all of the surrounding residential areas. The improvements were carried out using £300,000 that was awarded to Bridgend County Borough Council from the Coastal Communities Fund, which is delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of UK and Welsh governments to boost the economy in coastal communities. News SUFFERING SIDE-EFFECTS The UK sends armed forces personnel overseas on a wide variety of deployments; from training, to supporting efforts to tackle Ebola and combat operations. Equipping them for these missions is a complicated task; it is important that they receive the appropriate kit for the job. During a recent House of Commons Defence Select Committee inquiry, we highlighted that armed forces personnel serving in areas where malaria is present have been prescribed an anti-malarial drug called mefloquine, commonly known as Lariam. It has a number of well documented side-effects including insomnia, anxiety, nausea, mood swings; for some individuals these can be long-term and severe. It therefore must be prescribed under strict conditions, following an assessment with a medical practitioner. The inquiry found this has not always been the case, our report is available via http://tinyurl.com/h68wmew . In response, the Ministry of Defence established a single point of contact for both serving personnel and veterans given these drugs when a member of the armed forces and who are concerned that they may have been affected. If you have concerns, you can seek advice via a confidential helpline (open Monday-Friday 9am -5pm - 0306 7705 059, email SGDPHC-MEFLOQUINESPOC@mod.uk or online via this link http://tinyurl.com/jdyz9lm. DROP-IN SESSIONS HELPING TO FIGHT FLOODING AND COASTAL EROSION A series of local drop-in sessions are underway as part of a Welsh Government study into the risk of coastal flooding and erosion in Wales. To date, sessions have been held at the Rock Inn in John Street and at the Old St John’s Schoolroom in Newton, and a third session is being organised to take place in March. The sessions will help identify what improvements are necessary to prevent the risk of flooding in the event of a predicted future rise in sea levels. Residents in areas such as Beach Road are being informed of the events by letter, and the sessions are also open to anyone else who wants to participate. The council is particularly keen to speak to people who may have experienced flooding in the past, or who have photographs and images that they can share along with their knowledge and views. The Welsh Government and the council wants to develop a series of feasible solutions to guard against future flooding, so I hope that as many people as possible will take part in the sessions. A venue and date is currently being organised for the next session – look out for more details on this soon. NEW PROJECT WILL SUPPORT SMALL FOOD BUSINESSES Bridgend County Borough is set to be at the centre of an exciting new project that is going to help develop small food businesses across Wales. The Welsh Government has provided the council with funding of £600,000 as part of a Food Supply Chain project. The funding will be used to support small food businesses within the county borough and create strong supply chains that will help them to access new markets and offer locally produced goods to meet the demands of retail and tourism businesses. Bridgend County Borough Council is leading on the threeyear project in partnership with Rural Development Plan local action groups. It recognises that the majority of food and drink businesses in Wales are independent producers, and that just eight per cent form part of a larger organisation. Strong supply chains and consistent levels of quality are essential for these small businesses to thrive and prosper, and the project aims to help them overcome barriers and maximise economies of scale through things like greater collaboration, cooperative working and stronger networks Bridgend County Borough will play a very prominent role in this new initiative, and I am looking forward to seeing it develop and grow. Councillor Hywel Williams Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
FLOOD RISK TO BE INVESTIGATED It’s good news that the controversial Shoreline Management Plan for the Newton area may be challenged. Consultants have been engaged by Bridgend Council to investigate alternative options to what was originally proposed in the plan – which was to stop maintaining the sea wall and other flood defences at Beach Road in 25 years. This left residents facing the prospect of their properties being vulnerable to storm surges and rising sea levels in future, Yes, 25 years can seem a long way off but it’s not that great especially when banks are considering whether to give mortgages on local properties and insurance companies are deciding whether to provide cover. I met a number of residents at the time that lobbied for a rethink. I am pleased that BCBC has now engaged consultants to look into possible options for further flood defence work, which would be funded by Welsh Government. But the key issue remains – who will be liable for on-going maintenance of the new flood defences and will NRW be forced to carry on repairing the existing sea wall in perpetuity. That’s what people want. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

FEATURES PRINCE’S TRUST CALLS FOR SUPPORT IN PORTHCAWL
The Prince’s Trust is looking for volunteers in the Porthcawl area to act as mentors to young people that have taken part on a Prince’s Trust programme. Mentors make a real difference to the lives of young people on Prince’s Trust programmes by providing them with one-to-one support, guidance, encouragement and inspiration. Seven years ago Andrew Grainger, from Cardiff, took an early severance package from his civil service job. He decided he wanted to do something proactive, interesting, worthwhile and challenging. He has now been a volunteer for over four years. A lot of people have misconceptions about young people, but once you start working with them, it’s very, rewarding. By volunteering with The Prince’s Trust, you get to meet a range of young people and you get to see them develop and blossom. We’ve always been reliant on dedicated volunteers to help us in our mission of turning the lives of young people around. Whether you’re helping in our offices or working one-to-one with young people, your support can have a powerful impact and long lasting effects. For further information, call Bob Priddle at The Prince’s Trust, on 02920 431500 or email robert.priddle@princes-trust.org.uk

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT The Talbot Management Committee met recently to plan activities for 2017, and once these are formalised we will let you know more details. We already have two theatre trips arranged, to see Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat, in May and Miss Saigon in December. Both are in the Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay. Our evening entertainment ‘Showtime at the Talbot’ starts with a Country and Western night, in March, with entertainment by Rob Allen. Linedancers, why not join us? In the meantime perhaps now is a good time to remind readers that the Talbot Community Centre is a not-for-profit registered charity, and belongs to the local community, run by members of the community and used by you, the community. We do not belong to the local borough council, or any religious establishment. We have 160 members this year - 2016/17. TOOLS FOR AFRICA
It’s been a while since we wrote specifically about the sewing machines we send to Africa. These are invaluable, particularly for women, but a machine and necessary training aren’t all that’s needed. Any first time sewing machine owner knows that you can’t wait to get started but can’t if you don’t have thread, fabric, pins and all those other things you need to actually make something. Tools For Self Reliance put this right by collecting together all those bits and pieces that anyone who sews inevitably has left over. There are always bits of bias binding, elastic, reels of thread, hooks and eyes etc you’ll probably never use again. In addition you may have some nice ribbon or lace or a piece of trim left over, a tape measure or thimble you don’t use. Buttons left when you had to buy 6 and only wanted 3. We can use all those things you don’t want but don’t want to throw away. Donations of items can be left in the receptacle outside Sussed in Porthcawl or you can ring us to arrange collection. If you can help in any way please contact Pam (Sewing) on 741118 or John (Tools) on 786367. Pam Murden Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

SUPERCLUSTER OF GALAXIES NEAR MILKY WAY The inclement weather failed to stop a Porthcawl U3A walking group from visiting Waun Cimla [Bedford Park] in January. The enthusiasts and their three dogs walked from the car park to Cefn Junction Signal Box, taking in the downstairs exhibition and sheltering from the bitter wind at the same time. Their walk continued along the Cwsc to the ironworks but they were disappointed to find the gates locked. Y Cefn Gwyrdd has contacted the council several times concerning this unsatisfactory situation only to be told that there is no one available to carry out a monthly health and safety check! A big thank you to the 38 villagers of all ages who turned out to sing Christmas carols (the most melodious ever) and to householders who contributed generously to Macmillan nursing , contributing £206 to this worthy cause. One of the aims of y Cefn Gwyrdd is to walk the paths around the village and our New Year walk took in the beautiful Mountain Lane on the way to Waunbant and the Frogpond, before arriving at Pyle Garden Centre for sustenance . Sixteen walkers and a one year old enjoyed the winter sun and returned via the Waun. John Mason
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Its Six Nations Rugby season. Did you know there is a strong link between rugby and the Christian faith? Have you noticed how many international players wear a ‘cross’ or ‘bible phrase’ written on the strapping of their wrists? Rugby was taken to the South Sea Island’s of Fiji and Tonga by Welsh missionaries. Hence the old joke about the Welsh preacher who gave the former cannibals their first taste of Christianity! As a rugby chaplain with Bridgend Ravens I often get told I haven’t prayed hard enough if the team loses! And there is the famous poem with its roots in Irish rugby that says “when the One Great Scorer come to write against your name, He marks not that you won or lost but how you played the game”. The great thing about rugby is teamwork: players tall and short, large and small all have their place and success is only found in working together. Christian faith is about teamwork too – though we call the team ‘church’. Jesus said ‘Come, follow me’ and formed his followers into a team of disciples. Faith is only really effective when Christians work together. Enjoy the rugby. Rev. Martin Gillard

Astronomers have found one of the Universe’s biggest superclusters of galaxies near the Milky Way. The Vela supercluster, which had previously gone undetected because it was hidden by stars and dust in the Milky Way, is a huge mass that influenced the motion of our Galaxy. It is one of the biggest concentrations of galaxies in the Universe - possibly the biggest in the neighbourhood of our Galaxy, but that will need to be confirmed by further study. The gravity of the Vela supercluster may explain the difference between the measured motion of the Milky Way through space and the motion predicted from the distribution of previously mapped galaxies. The team used the Anglo-Australian Telescope to measure distances for many galaxies to confirm earlier suggestions that Vela is a supercluster. It also helped to estimate the supercluster’s effect on the motion of the Milky Way. Two new Australian surveys starting in 2017 will assess the size of the Vela supercluster. An optical survey will measure galaxy distances over a bigger area around Vela, while a radio survey will be able to see through the densest parts of the Milky Way into the supercluster’s heart. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Too late to wish you a happy new year but will do so anyway! A quick run through of what we have been doing - a demonstration of ‘Ideas for Christmas’ given by Judy Harvey was excellent with lovely floral arrangements. We enjoyed our Christmas lunch at the Grove Golf club and our party with entertainment from Mike Boyle. On a very sad note I have to report the deaths of three members. Evelyn White was Treasurer for many years but will mainly be remembered for her wonderful singing on so many occasions. She will be greatly missed. June Walker started the luncheon club many years ago -still the most popular group. Our latest death was Beryl Jones, a great loss. She was on committee for many years as Secretary, Chairman and Federation Delegate a lovely lady whose wise counsel will be greatly missed. Our meeting this month is on 8th February, 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when Mrs Alison Westwood will demonstrate ‘Eclipse Gift Wrapping’. As someone who struggles with packing presents I am looking forward to this so come along and learn with me. All welcome. Dorothy Thomas Tel: (01656) 772157 Seaside News | 31

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS
It is said that no one has seen the words, “I wish I’d spent more time at the office” on a gravestone. A colleague once told me that she decided to re-think her priorities after asking her 4-year old daughter to do something and, “I can’t, I’m in a meeting,” was the reply. The psalms speak of silver and gold idols that neither speak, hear, smell, or feel, and the same is true for each of us as the worship of lifeless forms diminishes our highest and deepest joy. True worship happens in the places we devote our time, money, deepest affection, and gratitude. Idols take many forms, such as excessive work; holding on to old hurts and arguments; striving for perfection that makes us perpetually dissatisfied; focus on our children at the expense of being present for our partner; excessive risk-taking; gambling, alcohol, or drugs; and so much more. The highest aim of our lives should be in making manifest what we are uniquely called to be. Is there time for that God-creation in your calendar, or are you avoiding or neglecting that person? God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel
On Tuesday 3rd January the Inner Wheel meeting was held at the Grove Golf Club. Invitations to members to attend Inner Wheel events in our District were received by Secretary Carol. Members accepting an invitation will attend on our behalf. The monthly meeting on 7th February will be at 2pm in the Grove. Following the meeting the Club will celebrate the annual Birthday by having afternoon tea. The Club arranges events throughout the year to raise money for Charity, but this is not the only way we support people in need. In 2014 Angela Gorman spoke to the Club about problems facing mothers in Africa, and was presented with a bag of jumpers for babies in Africa. Members continue to knit jumpers to support babies in Africa. Knitted blankets are sent to orphanages in Romania. Knitting sessions are held where members enjoy working together for a good cause. We collect used stamps, plastic milk bottle tops, ring-pulls from metal drink cans, all of which raise funds for charitable causes. The Inner Wheel Service was held in St. John’s, Newton on Sunday 15th January. Afterwards we enjoyed coffee and biscuits at the Ancient Briton. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent
THANKS FROM ROTARY The Rotary Club of Porthcawl would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the people of Porthcawl for their generous donations over the Christmas period and throughout last year. Just over Christmas alone you helped us raise over £5,000! So, whether you came to the Christmas Tree Festival, posted cards with Rotary Post stamps, met us on one of our Carolcade routes or saw us by the Bandstand in the run-up to Christmas, you have helped us to help local charities. We have been able to donate useful equipment or make financial contributions to many charitable associations including LATCH, Ty Ellis, Talking Newspapers, Ty Hafan, Bridgend Youth Music, Ty Cornell, Welsh Disabled Sports, Kids Out, and Trinity Care and Support among others. Rotary International also has junior branches - Interact - for young people between the ages of 12 and 18 and the club has several Interact Clubs in local secondary schools. The Porthcawl Comprehensive Interact Club and the one at St. Clare’s have also been busy with their charity work – the former having presented £1,400 to Wales Air Ambulance and will shortly be presenting £700 to ‘Rain Forest’ and £120 to RLNI. The senior club is very grateful for their enthusiasm and hard work appreciating the fact that they, also, are doing this for the community in their own valuable free time. Ivor Williams

Our January meeting was taken by President Dawn Storie, who welcomed everyone and wished them a Happy New Year. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and agreed. The Federation Newsletter was discussed along with other items on the agenda. The potential new resolutions for the NFWI campaigns were read out, considered and votes collected. Details of future outings to the GFWI Denman College lunch at the Aberavon Beach Hotel, GFWI fashion show at the Nolton House Hotel and a day trip to Leeks were given out. Our ‘Beetle Drive’ was won by Jane Lewis, the competition by Betty Hart and the raffle by Naomi Williams. The Luncheon Club will be on 7th February and the Book Club, at Bridgend Library, will take place on 14th February. Our next meeting will be held on 2nd February at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). Our guest speaker will be Dean Powell with his talk on ‘Glyn Houston’. The competition is ‘valley memorabilia’. New members are always welcome, why not come along and join us? For further information call Diane on 01656 656600. Dawn Storie
In December, we celebrated our anniversary lunch at the Fairways Hotel. Also in December we had our Christmas meeting – enjoyed tea and cakes and were wonderfully entertained by the CATWG bell ringers. Some of us were even brave enough to have a go! We began 2017 with a visit, in January, to the Royal Mint in Llantrisant. We were warmly welcomed and our tour guide was very interesting. Well worth another visit, and the new £1 is very elegant. Also in our January meeting, we will have our annual and highly amusing auction. Our monthly reading group meeting is continuing and throughout 2017 we are planning more trips and talks which we hope our members will enjoy. You are very welcome to join us. We meet every 4th Thursday of the month from 2 to 4pm at All Saints Church Hall. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on (01656) 713124

Recently we were in the Talbot Centre, Kenfig Hill for first meeting of 2017. We had a good turn out of members plus a visitor with hopes she will join us. Marjorie and Enid conducted the meeting. This year is our 67th anniversary and we are celebrating with a lunch in the Grove, Porthcawl. Our walking group is organised and so is our craft group, our scrabble group is as always well supported. We had a lot of important items to discuss this month and some times we are unable to just chat and have a laugh which is what the WI is all about so we passed a resolution to start at 2pm - which gives us half an hour extra. The talk this month was from Norah Clarke on the Guide Dogs for the Blind. We were amazed at the amount of money needed for each dog. Next month Sarah and Team will be telling us about Trading Standards, which will be informative. So don’t forget this month we will be starting at 2pm on the second Tuesday of the month so we will have time to chat and laugh with our tea and biscuits. Christine Callaghan
The January meeting was opened with New Year Greetings to our members, after which President Jennifer Davies dealt with the business in hand. The speaker for the evening was Madeleine Moon MP who gave a very interesting talk on the ways and workings of Parliament, a little of the history, and what an exciting place it is to be apart of. Tina Hoskins was presented with the competition cup as the winner for 2016 - well done. We held our Christmas Party on the 14th December - a fabulous selection of food was provided by Committee and other members. The tables were beautifully decorated, thanks to everyone who helped. We were then grandly entertained by a very talented violinist, Benjamin Issac, who played a selection of Classical and other pieces. January 4th, ten of our members spent the day in Cardiff, with lunch first followed by a visit to the Pantomime, everyone had a great time. Thanks to Shirley for organising. WillS
YOUR DIGITAL LEGACY As we now live so much of our lives online, when making a will, you should consider what will happen to the information which you store digitally. As your will is a public document, it is not a good idea for it to include details of your username and passwords of any online accounts. This information could easily fall into the wrong hands, as it can be obtained by applying to the Probate Registry for a copy of the will. It may be worth considering making a directory of all of the online services you use – without giving away passwords- and add it to your will so your loved ones know which digital services you use. This should take the form of a letter of wishes. A number of services have sprung up online offering to manage your digital assets, often for a fee. They will store your documents securely online and will allow you to nominate trustees to handle your affairs after your death. However, there is a question as to what happens to your information if the service goes out of business. If this were to happen after your death, but before your trustees have accessed your information, it could be lost forever. You should also consider tax planning for your digital assets. Your e-book reader may hold hundreds of books which will have a value. Such assets are potentially liable to Inheritance Tax; however, it may be hard to determine the value of that asset on the open market. Many licences for electronic downloads do not allow them to be sold to third parties and as such they would have no value for IHT purposes. If you take some time to address the above, your heirs will thank you for your foresight. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

Steps to take if you have been appointed as executor of a Will:- Most Executors and Administrators use solicitors to advise them on dealing with the estate. The first steps following an individual’s death include registering the death and making funeral arrangements. You should check the Will to ascertain if the deceased left any funeral instructions and/or if they held any funeral plans. The next steps should be contacting the deceased’s bank(s) to freeze the accounts, obtain account balances, and check through paperwork to help identify organisations you need to contact. These may include financial institutions – banks, building societies, investment managers, life insurance companies, registrars named on any share certificates etc. You should also notify any employers, pension providers, social security office, and any liabilities held by the deceased such as loans, credit cards, hire purchase agreements and the inland revenue. All Insurers for the car, home and any life insurance policies together with all suppliers of utilities (phone, power etc) and rent should also be notified. Always ensure that adequate insurance is in place for properties and other assets (the deceased’s insurance may well no longer be valid). Once you have ascertained details of the finances and obtained valauations, you should be in a position to deal with inheritance tax (IHT) and apply for a Grant of Representation. IHT will only be payable if the value of the estate is over the IHT threshold of £325,000.00. If the deceased was pre-deceased by a spouse, this threshold may be increased by up to a further £325,000.00 if the full value of their IHT allowance was not used up when they died. Unless the estate is small, you normally need to apply to the Probate Registry for a ‘Grant of Probate’ (if you are an Executor) or ‘Letters of Administration’ (if there was no Will). Both a Grant of Probate and Letters of Administration are known collectively as a ‘Grant of Representation’. Applying for the Grant requires completing the appropriate form and submitting it to the Probate Registry with the Will, inheritance tax paperwork and a small fee. You can apply yourself or through your solicitor. Once probate has been granted, the Executors (or Administrators) have the authority to distribute the estate in accordance with the Will. If there is no Will, the estate is distributed according to the rules of intestacy. If you require assistance with the administration of a loved one’s estate then please contact the Estates and Trusts Team for an initial consultation.

Finance FINAL SALARY PENSION TRANSFERS – DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE? Are you in a final salary scheme? Do you know the capital value of your pension and what that means to you? Last month we explained that we are able to provide the specialist pension advice to you if you are in need of advice regarding any occupational/final salary pensions you may have. Just to recap, our final salary transfer advice service will assess your occupational/final salary scheme, and in the context of your own personal circumstances and retirement plans; consider how generous the transfer value is, and provide you with an easy reading, clear and jargon free report to ensure you understand the sacrifices you will be making as well as the benefits of any potential transfer, before you make your final decision. This month, we would like to demonstrate to you the benefits of regularly reviewing all of your pension arrangements. Many people consider a final salary scheme pension to be ‘cast iron and not to be tampered with’. However, because we are pension specialists, our advice includes an ‘all pension review’, and this month we can demonstrate the additional benefits of this. Ms M-L, a client since 2006 has final salary scheme benefits with a former employer, and in 2011 we reviewed this scheme alongside her other financial arrangements. At that time the transfer value was £90,000 and once the full analysis of the scheme had been completed, our advice at that time was to leave the benefits in place. In late 2016 we carried out our regular review with Ms M-L, and having obtained current figures for this same scheme, find that the transfer value has now increased to £224,000. The subsequent analysis of this now shows that in consideration of her overall circumstances and retirement plans a transfer is both feasible and suitable. This example clearly demonstrates the benefits of: • our regular ongoing financial advice • regular review of all pension plans including occupational/final salary schemes. Ms M-L is now able to make decisions in the context of knowing that this scheme has been reviewed regularly over the years, and because of this, is able to make a very informed decision regarding her future plans. We understand taxation and how each one interacts. We prepare personal ‘balance sheets’ and cashflow forecasting to enable you to make the right decisions for your futures. Should you seek our help? If you have an investment risk profile to accept stockmarket variations and the capacity to accept short term variations in the value of your investments, it is possible we can: • improve your tax position • enhance your pension benefits in the event of your death • ensure your financial planning dovetails into your future plans If you would like to arrange a no obligation initial meeting, please contact us on 01656 867167 or email gwyn@cstwealth.co.uk This article does not constitute financial advice and should not be construed as such. EARLY SPRING CLEAN So, with Christmas a distant memory now, the first couple of months of the year are the best time to get some order into matter by ‘spring-cleaning’ your finances. Areas which are commonly missed are those dealing with ensuring that borrowings are cost-effective and debts are trimmed and kept down – easier said than done of course. However, by engaging the services of an experienced Adviser, the task is very much easier. If you’re on a high mortgage interest rate, get onto a more competitive one, especially if you’re on standard variable rate with the current lender. Then, take a look at your credit cards and loans. There are so many good deals available at the moment, kick your expensive borrowing into touch and apply for a cheaper rate elsewhere. If you need home improvements and cannot change your current mortgage deal at the moment, ask the Adviser about a secured loan. This is a loan that runs alongside the mortgage and is secured on the property until you’ve paid it off. With interest rates on secured loans having reduced dramatically over the last couple of years, they are more cost effective now than ever – you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Life cover is another area that many people don’t review – yet you could save money by getting a more competitive policy. As competition has increased and rates for men and women based on gender have now been done away with, you could be surprised at being able to get a better deal than your current policy or policies provide. If you don’t have sufficient cover, talk to an adviser who could get you quotes almost immediately – and if you save money, you can save it or spend it on other things – or even improve your cover as your family needs dictate. Finally don’t ignore income protection. One call to us – 01656 782545 – and we’ll arrange for a suitably qualified Adviser to get in touch. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545
WHO WILL CARE FOR YOU IN OLD AGE? As a population, we are living longer and with an ageing population the need for care and the amount of time spent in care is growing. A recent survey carried out by BUPA found that nearly three quarters of the UK population think that they will have care needs in old age with only half of those expecting their family to provide that care. For those who don’t want or expect family to care for them, the future is uncertain as the options available are not clear-cut. Local authorities are already under immense pressure to provide a service that safeguards the wellbeing of our elderly. With ever increasing care costs and the rise in the number of people needing care, qualification for funding is likely to become ever more stringent. Self-funding or part funding throws up its own set of problems. Few can afford to pay the high costs of long-term care out of day-to-day income, which usually means having to tap into other resources such as a home, savings or investments. How best to do this requires careful planning and an Independent Financial Adviser who specialises in long-term care funding may be able to guide you in the right direction. BIRD WATCH
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
New Year – No Garden! We have recently moved. We were sad to say goodbye to our garden but excited to see what birds would visit our new home. There’s no garden but Magpie, Great Tit and House Sparrow have visited the balcony bird table! From my home-office window I regularly see Red Kite, Heron, Green Woodpecker, Carion Crow, Blue Tit, Woodpigeon and Collared Dove. Nearby there is a large lake and areas of woodland, which expands my list to include Coot, Mallard, Black-headed Gull, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Mute Swan, Coal Tit, Goldcrest, Buzzard and Kestrel. The highlights so far have been Red-crested Pochard and Red Squirrel! Have you worked out from my species list where our new home is? Switzerland! Our apartment looks out over Lake Zurich and today I can see some fresh snow on the neighbouring hills. Hopefully, with a drop-in temperature, I might again see birds on our windowsill! Make Your Garden Count! If you have a garden and enjoy watching the birds and other creatures that come to it, the BTO Garden BirdWatch survey could be perfect for you. www.bto.org/gbw Happy Garden Bird Watching! February Already! Bulbs are beginning to spear through the wreckage of winter with a friendly promise that spring will eventually arrive – honest! It can prove a busy time of year for gardeners, suddenly there are lots of things to be done– early sowing of flowers and veg giving them a head start! They will grow quite happily on a window sill indoors (especially petunia, impatiens and geraniums). Take care not to sow them too thickly or water them too much as this can lead to ‘damping off’ (small patches of them dying for no apparent reason). We all know Parsnips are better after frost – frost converts the starches into sugar giving that lovely nutty flavour – yummy! If you don’t think they have had enough frost this year, pull them up and keep them in the bottom of the fridge for two weeks – job done! Overgrown hedges will benefit from a good cut back this month, improving their health and shape (and the exercise won’t be bad for your health and shape either!) Did you know the world’s biggest garden is the Dubai Miracle Garden? It has over 45 million flowers in bloom. That’s some backyard! Chris Early
BLUE IN PORTHCAWL Just before Christmas I spotted a bird sheltering on the rocks at Pink Bay. The red beak and the red leg I could see means it was a Chough (their Welsh name, Brân Goesgoch, means Red-legged Crow). There is only a small UK population. But I noticed something else. There were colours on the visible leg, one green and one blue ring. I emailed Adrienne Stratford (who has been colour-ringing Chough with Tony Cross in mid and North Wales for over 25 years). I didn’t expect Adrienne to confirm the identity as I had only identified two of the four rings (although one would be a metal ring with a unique number). But, Adrienne recognised the bird as one which had also been previously been spotted. It was Blue. Blue was ringed as a chick on the North coast of Anglesey in 2016 - 219 km away! She is the furthest-travelled young Chough from the project. Why Blue travelled to Porthcawl and the route she took is a mystery, but I am pleased she came. For information on the project and what to do if you see Blue / Chough with colour rings visit www.gowerbirdringinggroup. blogspot.co.uk (November 2016). Kelly Thomas

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB This month can be used to look back and evaluate last year’s successes, and the not so successful. Which plant grew well, and which was a disappointment, and why? During February get the pruning shears out. Prune overwintered fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies it will help to stop them setting seed. Lift and divide snowdrops, ‘still in the green’ if you decide to move them or create more plants. Providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged you can plant Lilies and Alliums bulbs. Plant bare root roses in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour. The rhubarb in our small plot is pushing through already, so I have covered them against the expected frost and hopefully encourage extra growth in time for Easter. Towards the end of the month prune summer flowering clematis before active growth begins. The club shop (Cabin) has reopened and has been restocked. The Committee continues to evaluate the ongoing maintenance of Cliff Cottage at the monthly committee meetings. The next lecture will be held on Monday February 13th 2017. Health RIGHT VIEW As you wake up in the morning from a restful sleep, gently notice that ever so subtle ‘gap’ just before your thinking mind creates or grasps onto a thought such as ‘I am awake’ ‘I am at home’. Notice how your world is formed through conceptual language. Such thought constructs can build momentum and is commonly termed as ‘proliferation’ in the Buddhist doctrine. Our set of images within becomes language and is composed by layers of stimuli that come together through our senses in rapid succession. The Buddha knew that the process of environmental stimulation created powerful belief based thought realities in our minds that are skewed and biased. In the first part of the doctrine ‘right view’ he gives an instruction to pause frequently and to know the system of ethical mind / body cause and effect. Can you discern the one and powerful thought and its language that makes you compelled to act? What is driving such thinking? Do your emotions surge before thinking? Knowing this process, he then points towards the renunciate space between thinking and the way of restraint and cultivation of wholesome mental qualities. A path way unfolds. Neville Evans

PORTHCAWL KRUF IS LOOKING FORWARD TO A SUCCESSFUL 2017 2016 was a great year for Porthcawl KRUF. The annual Walk for Life raised over one thousand pounds and enabled KRUF to donate £2,000 towards a senior social worker for the children’s dialysis unit in Cardiff. The silent auction raised £500 and the BBQ over £1,000. The coffee morning in the RAFA club was a great success. The Phoenix society made a generous donation and KRUF received donations from the Christmas morning swim. £3,000 was donated to Morriston dialysis unit for equipment. As usual all the money raised during the year is donated directly to projects to make life easier for people with kidney disease. The committee is now looking forward to 2017. Events will begin with a silent auction followed by the walk for life. Then in June everyone will look forward to the return of the popular Ascot Ladies Day in the High Tide - so get your hats ready for the 17th June! So a big thank you to all our supporters and here’s to a good year ahead. Judith French, Publicity Officer
OMEGA 3s A recent European study revealed that young people have an inexpensive and rather silver-bullet shot at preventing the development of high blood pressure by stepping up their intake of one high-octane nutrient: omega-3 fatty acids. The study presented at the American Heart Association’s 2016 Scientific Sessions, involved measuring the amount of omega -3 fatty acids in the blood of 2,036 young, healthy adults. When each subject’s blood pressure was assessed, scientists found that those with the most omega 3s in their blood had the lowest systolic blood pressure (the top blood pressure reading). Conversely, those with the lowest amount of omega-3s in their blood had the highest diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number). Dr. Mark Filipovic, a researcher at the University of Zurich and Cantonal Hospital of Baden in Switzerland, said even a reduction in blood pressure as little as 5 mm Hg could prevent the number of strokes and heart-related events people experience. Further, another recent study indicates that less than 1 gram of omega-3 fats could benefit people who already suffer from hypertension A single 3-ounce serving of wild-caught Alaskan salmon provides this amount. Plant and marine sources such as fish, fish oil, algae, flax seed and hemp seed supply omega-3s, but plant sources are devoid of DHA and EPA among other things, while krill oil has emerged as the best source. Arts BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR
The successful tour of Dublin and Drogheda by the Bridgend Male Choir in the latter part of 2016 culminated in a magnificent Choral Spectacular at St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Drogheda when Bridgend Male Choir under the baton of Musical Director Ryan Wood, accompanists Stephanie Bailey (Piano) and Scott Williams (Organ) performed with St. Peter’s Male Voice Choir, Drogheda and Musical Director Edward Holly to a full St. Peter’s Church, West Street. €5,000 was raised for the local charity Malta Services, Drogheda which since 1969 has provided support and services to over 100 adults with intellectual disabilities in the region. ART IN FOCUS This month I bring to your attention a lovely new exhibition which explores Chinese flower and bird paintings entitled: ‘Nature’s Song’. This beautiful exploration of art in China looks at its development in the late Ming Dynasty over 500 years ago to how it has been represented in recent decades. Flower and bird painting is one of the three main types of Chinese painting, along with landscape and figure painting. It developed more than 1500 years ago, reaching its peak of development about one thousand years ago in the Song Dynasty. Although it became less decorative and more realistic, it was not intended to be a simple imitation of nature. Flowers and birds were given symbolic meanings, and different styles of painting were used to convey the artist’s personality and ideas. Many of the greatest artists have also been scholars and they, in particular, developed a new freehand style of painting as a way of expressing their emotions. Scholar painters considered the arts of calligraphy and poetry as integral parts of flower and bird painting, giving their art a deeper spiritual meaning. On show until 23rd April. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I’ve been inundated with calls after last month’s article on Planet Rockstock, held in December at Trecco Bay, with fans wanting information on how to get tickets for this year’s event. You need to check out Planet Rock’s website or listen to their radio station. The line-up is not announced until August for this brilliant three-day event. It was nice to spend time over Christmas with my former song-writing partner, Daley B, who’s now back in the Czech Republic. Not much happening on the pub circuit, with too many jam nights on, as I’m not a fan. I have, however, been keeping you up to speed on our original acts, Bridgend’s Those Damn Crows and Last Flight to Pluto, whose album, ‘See You At The End’, is selling well. Kenfig Hill’s rock star, Jayce Lewis, has had top band Fear Factory recording at his Northstone Studios in Court Colman, while Porthcawl’s talented Rebecca Hurn looks set for another brilliant year after her ‘Lifeline’ made the iTunes top 50. Check these artists out on their Facebook pages and websites, and I’ll feature them soon. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW The opening shot of the James Bond film ‘Spectre’ (2015) has caused a bit of a stir for the visual spectacle of a seemingly single long take, beginning with a street carnival in Mexico City in which the camera swoops down into close-up of a couple who make their way into a hotel and up in the lift to a bedroom, where 007 pulls off a face mask to reveal his identity before stepping out onto a roof-top parapet and running along it to the end of the building in order to accomplish his mission. It’s hard to spot the joins, but it was actually done as three separate takes, using a large Technocrane and a Steadicam, with minimal digital enhancement, and it was very well done. It reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock’s cinematic audacity with ‘Rope’ (1948) where the action unfolds in a just handful of long takes, but what really impressed me was his earlier film, ‘Young and Innocent’ (1937), with the long tracking crane shot across a dance-floor at the end of the film, closing in on the twitching face of the dance-band’s drummer. These three examples show filmmaking at its best, but Hitchcock didn’t have the advantage of remote-controlled cranes in his day! Arts COR BOR OGWR MAKING A JOYFUL NOISE From slow and serious to light and sparkling, Cor Bro Ogwr’s Christmas concert had music to delight all tastes. The opening ‘Christmas Cantata’ was accompanied by a brass quintet of students from The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, who also played a selection of well known music, ‘Christmas Crackers’ put together for brass. Benjamin Britten’s ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ featured fast fingered harpist Angharad Edwards, who joined accompanist Glenn Crooks on the organ. The opening piece, sung by our soloists, Catrin Raymond and Grace Wyatt, raised hairs on the back of everyone’s neck as they started singing at the back of the church and proceeded down the aisle. The second half of the programme featured Welsh and English carols with a twist – ‘Jazz Carols’ by contemporary composer Will Todd and a version of ‘Tua Bethlem Dref,’ with an accompaniment from ‘Walking through the Air’ which our conductor cleverly wove through. Yes, it worked! Soloists and harpist also delighted us with their own chosen pieces. Our first concert with new conductor, Rosie Howarth, was a most enjoyable, colourful evening. You weren’t there? You missed a treat. Dominique Spearey www.cor-bro-ogwr.com

Then the following week we were treated to another remarkable presentation from Jenny Hibbert, a well known and respected wildlife photographer from Bridgend who shared with us her

WALES INTERCELTIC MUSIC AND DANCE FESTIVAL 2017 The Wales Interceltic Music and Dance Festival “Cwlwm Celtaidd” takes place this year over the weekend of the 10th, 11th, 12th of March at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. It is a family friendly festival featuring performers from the Celtic nations of Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man, Cornwall, Brittany and Wales, and includes concerts, ceilidhs, workshops, sessions and street performances. These activities include both ticketed and free events. The Saturday night concert is headlined by Welsh folk band CALAN which bring together the remarkable talents of five young musicians giving a fresh and vibrant sound to traditional Welsh music. With a contemporary and lively approach they breathe new life into the old traditions through their sparkling melodies, foot tapping tunes and spirited and energetic performances of Welsh step dancing. The Friday night concert includes a performance of interceltic music by Jamie Smiths MABON which is rooted in the traditional music of all the Celtic countries with uplifting jigs and driving reels alongside haunting love songs and singalong choruses. The performance will follow the live transmission of the Wales v Ireland Six Nations rugby international. Sport PORTHCAWL RUNNERS AND WALKERS
The New Year kicked off as usual with a run. Our friends Cornelly Striders put on a great event at Prince of Wales, Kenfig New Years Day Run, which was the final event of the Festive Four series of races. Club interest this year focused on the most improved runner in the series, as new member Hywel Dafydd had hit a rich vein of form, which saw him win the Club Santa Handicap mile race. The picture this month shows the hardcore of members that braved the Tata Reservoir Run on 8th Jan. By the time you read this our Couch to 5k runners will be well into their training programme to get them ready for the Porthcawl Parkrun, which is rapidly swelling in numbers. We wish them well on their noble quest. Momentum is gathering, with a real buzz at training nights, as members plan a series of spring and summer events together and plan to compete as a team in the West Glam Cross Country, Bridgend Summer League and Rack Raid Relay. With plenty to offer adults new to running and walking too, why not join us on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6.30pm from Porthcawl Rugby Club. Will Edwards Assistant Coach
PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB The club have now resumed full pool training on Friday nights, in readiness for getting back down on the beach in the spring. A large group of Nippers have now graduated to the Junior section, and although this means a step up in effort, they have all risen to the challenge and settled into the new regime really well. We have also had a few new Nippers joining to take their place, and are on the lookout for new members too, both young and old! To be able to join, you need to be 7 years or older, and need to be able to swim 100 metres. Why not come down and give us a try? Parents are also encouraged to join in where they can, so you won’t be sat on the sidelines twiddling your thumbs. Contact us on www.porthcawlifeguards.co.uk for more information. Also, a big thank you from the club to the America Lodge of Freemasons, London, [no.3368] for their kind donation. This will be put towards new equipment for the Nippers, so they can train safely in the sea this summer. Don’t forget to use your Co-op card to help us raise funds too! Phil Protheroe
Send us your club report - email: info@seasidenews.co.uk
THANKS YOU FROM PORTHCAWL RFC U13’S
Porthcawl RFC U13’s would like to sincerely thank Ancient Briton owners Andrew and Christina as well as the regular Sunday Quizers for donating the proceeds of recent events to purchase the team a set of hoodies for training. The boys were delighted to pop along to the Brit to collect the hoodies last week and really looked the part this weekend when they played Tata steel. The U13’s have had a very successful season winning all but one game, testament to their commitment to training and their determination to out perform the opposition. The team are hoping to tour later this year to end a wonderful season and it’s fantastic to see the boy’s fitness and confidence develop as they reach their teenage years. Thanks again to all those involved with the quiz and to the boys for such continued effort and enthusiasm. Kevin McCarthy
