Upgrade Our Pavements
Demonising Driftwood
Dear Editor, I would like to walk along side my mother and friend into town - one on a pavement mobility scooter and one in a wheelchair. Sadly, this is not possible as it is too dangerous. I live in St Davids Way, Porthcawl and the pavements are so bad I have to take them out onto the road, which is narrow and cars park either side, so the middle of the road is our only option. We keep to the road all the way to town because of no non-drop pavements from one block of pavements to the next. This is not good enough or safe. I have requested a visit to my street by either Ben Moffat, or perhaps Dave Herne from the council and hope by the time this letter is viewed this will have happened. Councillor David Seage wrote in a recent Seaside News that Porthcawl deserves regeneration. Then could he please look at all the pavements around Porthcawl which are in a very poor state of safety so we can all walk, use a wheelchair or mobility scooter to get into town and see the multi-million pound townscape heritage initiative. Look after all the residents who pay high tax rates before you spend money on initiatives, as you say councilor Sage - we deserve it. Mrs S Chivers, Porthcawl
Dear Editor, A bit of whimsy this month demonising driftwood. Kind regards and compliments of the season. Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl
Flight Over Margam
RE: Stop Having A Go At Dog Owners Dear Editor, Horses eat only natural products grass, hay and corn. Dogs eat processed foods mainly meat products. Dog mess carries disease, dangerous to humans especially children. Dogs foul in public places or pavements and parks, clean up your pet mess. Ann Williams, Porthcawl

SCHOOLS Brynteg School News
Lowri Morrison, Jessica Newman and Kevin Jarvisto of Year 10 were runners up in the local stage of the ESU Public speaking competition. The team were commended on their excellent performance and look forward to participating and progressing further next year. Well done. In the Wales Debating Championship Thomas Prosser [Year 13] and Samuel Griffiths [Year 11] performed well. Unfortunately they did not make it to the next round but Samuel was rewarded with an ‘Outstanding Speaker’ award. Continuing with the public speaking theme Brynteg hosted the first round of the Rotary Club’s ‘Youth Speaks’ competition. The senior team of Thomas Prosser, Connor Lomax and Lowri Morrison achieved an almost perfect performance on the subject ‘Should the global community be doing more to prevent the spread of Ebola?’ and were highly praised by the judges. The intermediate team of Megan Mackenzie-Shearan, Halle Bletsoe and Dylan Thomas breezed through the first round with a convincing speech on ‘why Welsh should remain compulsory in schools.’ Both teams will now participate in the next round in January. It is evident we have some excellent speakers in Brynteg, well done to all the teams. Brynteg students had the opportunity to visit one of the UK’s leading engineering and construction companies, VolkerFitzpatrick. The site visit was a tremendous success with students being informed on potential careers within the industry. VolkerFitzpatrick also visited the school to share their employability skills knowledge and advice on constructing a successful CV. Brynteg music department welcomed concert pianist ‘Pianoman’ Richard Meyrick to the school. Richard entertained and inspired Year 7 and GCSE pupils. He also put some of Brynteg’s own talented pianists through their paces in a public masterclass. Well done to the pianists involved. Once again Brynteg had large numbers of students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. This year 34 students achieved their Bronze awards and 39 students received their Silver award. The presentations for 2014 took place at Y Dderwen Comprehensive School and were easily the highest number of any other schools in the borough. Carry on campers! On the charity front Brynteg Students collected over 50 shoeboxes for the annual ‘Shoebox’ Appeal for disadvantaged children in other countries. Also the school was busy with activities with pupils raising money for the annual ‘Santa Appeal’ which supports disadvantaged families in the borough. Our caring pupils certainly have compassion for others less fortunate. Thank you everyone. Pam Doster Photo: Both Bronze & Silver Award recipients on Presentation Night. Seaside News | 12
Porthcawl Comprehensive School I am delighted to report that following an exhaustive five days of commitment, enthusiasm and energy on the part of our students, the head team raised over £4,000 during Charities’ Week. As each day went by, the fundraising gathered momentum with the keenly anticipated fancy dress day on Friday 14th November being the pinnacle of the week. The youth of today are often much maligned and criticised and seldom given the praise that they deserve. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our pupils and staff for contributing so wholeheartedly to this campaign and congratulate our extraordinary young people on raising this impressive amount of money for charity. Links with the local community are further enhanced with contributions to Ty Hafan, Latch, the RNLI and the Sandville. Donations will also be made to made to MNDA, Mind, LLM Fund, Touched by Cancer and the GULU Mission Initiative in Uganda. Very well done! Tickets are now on sale for our Annual School Show, GREASE at the Pavilion Box Office (Tel 01656 815995). There will be evening performances from 28th – 30th January, and a matinée on Saturday 31st January 2015. This is already proving to be a very popular choice, so please book your seats in plenty of time to avoid disappointment. I look forward to seeing you there. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher

Nottage Primary News The festive season was, as ever, a hectic time in school with 3 different concerts. Nursery and Reception performed ‘I Spy Christmas’, Year 1 and 2 performed ‘Prickly Hay’ and the Juniors performed a World War 1 tribute. Donations from our concerts and our ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ were made to Y Bont, who enable children with a disability to fulfil their potential. The school choir were once again on their travels, singing beautifully for Carols in the Pavilion, The Christmas Tree Service at All Saints and at the Masonic Home. The PTA discos were very successful in raising much needed funds. We are really grateful that the PTA continues to work tirelessly in order to purchase resources and subsidise events for the children. The Porthcawl Town Twinning Association’s ‘Find the Reindeer’ competition saw three of the four prizes scooped by Elisha Martin and sisters, Ava and Robyn Davies. Lucky girls! A big thank you to John Mordecai and Grant Pritchard of ABC Tyres for supplying tyres needed for the latest project in Early Years. All the children and staff at Nottage would like to wish all Seaside News readers a very happy and healthy New Year. K Townley (Acting Head teacher) Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Porthcawl Primary News
We’ll be Springing into action as the new term begins, preparing our school garden and working on the allotments. Eco & School Council will be hard at work gathering suggestions and inspiration from the rest of the pupils and bringing their ideas for their outdoor space to life. We are so fortunate to have such a vast amount of outdoor space at West Park. The children benefit enormously from the well established woodland in our school grounds and enjoy taking part in forest school activities which further develop their confidence and self esteem through hands on learning experiences. We’re also focusing on developing awareness of Wales and the Welsh Language and encouraging pupils to use incidental Welsh. Recently a home school task captured the imagination and we were impressed by the fantastic work produced by pupils and their families for our Welsh displays. We look forward to a successful 2015 and would like to thank all our parents, carers and friends for their ongoing support. Sam Bennet Tel: 01656 815510 admin.westparkprimary@bridgend.gov.uk
A happy new year to everyone from Porthcawl Primary School! We are hoping that 2015 is as busy and successful as 2014! We ended 2014 on a real high with many amazing performances from our pupils. Both Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 put on an incredible show, which was enjoyed by all. Thank you to all the staff who helped with rehearsals and all the parents for their incredible support. 2015 promises to be another great year. We are looking forward to adding to our sporting achievements and would like to thank the PTA for our brand new Rugby posts, which should be up any day now. We are also looking forward to Science Week and we are getting ready to make some great scientific discoveries. We will also be inviting in parents to join us for some mind-blowing experiments! A new year also means new topics. Foundation Phase will be going to infinity and beyond in their Space topic and Key Stage 2 will be becoming mechanics and looking at Machines. We would also like to welcome our new ‘Rising 3’s’ pupils who are starting with us in January. Andrew Wood
Corneli Primary School News As we start a brand new year, memories of last term’s festivities are still fresh. Our Christmas Fayre with lots of games and prizes, provided an opportunity to pick up bargain gifts while Father Christmas himself took some last minute ‘orders’ for presents. He also took time out of his busy schedule to come and read to our nursery children in Story Café and to give out gifts to all. The performance of ‘One Frosty Night’ given by the nursery children was an enjoyable and magical start to our concerts. All the other classes became countries to perform ‘Christmas Around the World’, telling the Christmas story with a superb feast of song. Many thanks to everyone who helped make these concerts so successful. We also thoroughly enjoyed a performance given to us by Porthcawl Comprehensive students of the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk - oh yes we did! Mr Mills and the Staff give their thanks to all our families and friends of the school for their continued support and send every good wish for the New Year. News from St Clare’s School Pupils and staff at St. Clare’s School would like to wish all Seaside News readers a very happy and healthy New Year. The week before Christmas was a very busy time, although it feels so long ago now. There were Christmas concerts every day with pupils in every class from the Nursery upwards providing parents and grandparents with festive entertainment. Everyone was able to celebrate Christmas in their own way, as the Nursery visited Father Christmas in Pyle Garden Centre while the Sixth Form gathered for a meal at the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl. We now look forward to the term ahead, and wish our Senior School pupils the best of luck with their exams this month. Members of our Sixth Form are looking forward to finishing their mock exams, as shortly afterwards they are heading to Disneyland Paris. The annual trip to Paris for Years 12 and 13 involves Business Studies Lectures from the Disney experts and a day trip to Paris itself. We hope everybody enjoys. Our next Open Day takes place on Friday 30th January. To book your place please contact the office on (01656) 789966. I look forward to meeting you then, and personally showing you around our fantastic school. This half term years 1 & 2 have been following the Cornerstones topic of ‘Remember, Remember’. All the children have enjoyed their visit to Bridgend Fire Station and the visit from Porthcawl Fire Fighters to talk about fire safety. The children, supported by their parents, made models of Tudor homes to display as Pudding Lane in the classroom. In December the pupils put on several performances of their Christmas concert entitled ‘Christmas around the World’. Year 5 and 6 have been ‘Beast Creators’ this term. They have studied a range of habitats around the world and the types of animals and plants that live there. At the end of their studies they used this knowledge to create a super beast which could control and exterminate a super strength aphid that was destroying crops across Wales. Throughout the final weeks of the term year 5 and 6 worked well together to practise and perfect their Christmas Concert ‘Away with the Manger’. Children, staff and the audiences enjoyed this unusual take on the traditional school nativity play! Congratulations to the year 5 and 6 pupils who have recently been appointed Playground Leaders and the year 6 pupils who passed their Level 1 and 2 Cycling Proficiency Training. Rachel John (Acting Head Teacher)
The total raised for Children In Need was £177.82, thanks to everyone for their contributions. Our new fruit tuck shop has proved to be very popular, with a varied choice each day for only 20p. The PFA raised a total of £859.10 at their Christmas Fete; there were a number of different attractions, as well the usual stalls and raffle. Thanks to Santa for sparing an afternoon to visit at his busiest time! All their hard work makes a great deal of difference to our school, and there is also a psychic night arranged. They meet in the school every Wednesday morning if anyone would like to join them. The whole school attended our annual Christingle Service at Maudlam Church, led by Reverend Duncan Walker. It’s a lovely service, and the children always look forward to receiving their decorated oranges. Our school choir sang for the Old Age Pensioners at Cornelly Public Hall, and at a Carol Concert in Pisgah Chapel, Kenfig Hill with other schools from our cluster. The children worked very hard for the Christmas Concerts, the nursery and reception performed ‘The Innkeeper’s Breakfast’, with the rest of the school’s production, The Grumpy Innkeeper. SCHOOLS Cynffig Comprehensive News
A Busy Term At Pil Primary
Hello again – and a very Happy New Year. Having achieved the best-ever results in the school’s history last summer (and having seen the value we add to pupils’ performance at GCSE identified by the Welsh Government as ‘significant’ in every measure), our challenge for 2015 is to ensure that our pupils continue to achieve far beyond official predictions. And they will: Cynffig develops pupils who are academically successful, and whose horizons are broadened, and barriers to progress removed. All of our GCSE and A-level pupils, for example, have undertaken the Welsh Baccalaureate since 2009: developing Enterprise skills, cultural and political awareness (as I write this Year 12 are just returning from a debate at the Senedd), and supporting university applications with Individual Investigations of real relevance. They have worked on our Travel Plan, and been instrumental in implementing our building of a new, secure cycle compound to support healthy lifestyles. They have amazed concert audiences with superb vocal and instrumental performances, and been ambassadors for the ethos of Cynffig. We are a vibrant, welcoming school: our open evening for prospective sixth form pupils next September is on Thursday, February 26th, and it would be very good to see you. Hannah Castle, Head Teacher Tel: 01656 740294
The end of term was a busy time for all at Pil Primary School. The Royal Mint visited school to deliver workshops on the history of money. Children in Year 5 and 6 had the opportunity to do some computer programming using robotics with Swansea University. The school held a Christmas Fayre and a number of concerts. While, the school choir supported a variety of charity events in the community. They performed in Pyle RFC with KPC, St. James Church, Pisgah Chapel with Kenfig Hill Male Voice Choir and Pyle Garden Centre to support ‘Touched by Cancer’. A big thank you to all the children and staff for their efforts and the parents for their support. I hope all readers had an enjoyable Christmas and we wish you a successful New Year! N Pryce, Head Teacher
Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School A very Happy New Year to you and what a busy December it has been for the school. The school fete was a great success and the school community enjoyed its annual Christmas Concert. After nearly thirty years teaching at Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School, and four very enjoyable and successful years as head teacher, Rev Dr Manghan has moved to pastures new and taken up the posts of Education Adviser (Wales) for the Catholic Education Service and Education Officer for the Archdiocese of Cardiff. Mrs Keller will take over as acting head teacher from January and a new head teacher will be appointed during next term. I am sure you will all join me in wishing Dr Manghan all the very best. Finally, on September 1st 1965, Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School opened its doors to the first group of students and on September 1st 2015, the school will begin a year-long series of celebrations to mark the Golden Jubilee of the school. If you would like to volunteer or be part of these celebrations, please telephone Mrs Kirstie Davies on 01656 815500, for more information. Thank you! Healthy Habits Being Taught To PreSchoolers Many important health habits are established at a young age. I was delighted to hear that so many pre-school children in the county borough are benefiting from the new Healthy and Sustainable Pre-School Scheme, which is funded by the Welsh Government and co-ordinated by the council’s Childcare team in partnership with Public Health Wales. Twenty-six local preschool settings, including two child minders, are participating in the scheme and the Bright Beginnings Nursery in Tythegston is among those leading the way. As well as ensuring that all meals meet healthy guidelines, nursery staff are passing on ideas for nutritious recipes to parents and have introduced a daily tooth brushing programme for children aged two and above. Pre-school is an ideal time to influence a child’s health, and the scheme helps by giving parents some really useful advice. Of course, another way to keep young children healthy this winter is to get them vaccinated against flu. We may be coming towards the end of the flu season now, but I would like to remind all parents of children aged two, three or four that they are eligible for a free nasal spray vaccine – please contact your local GP for details. PCSO’s And The CO–OP
BCBC To Merge With Vale Of Glamorgan?
The Pyle and Cornelly PCSO’S have linked in and are currently working alongside the staff at the CO-OP store in Pyle. They regularly hold their ‘Cuppa with a Copper’ sessions in the cafe at the store. It co-insides well with the anti social behaviour issues at the location, as it’s a regular hot spot area. PCSO Kyle Maiden said “ The staff at the CO-OP really appreciate our presence and have had regular positive feed back from the community regarding this. It is a great opportunity for members from all the local communities to attend and raise any issues or concerns they have over a cuppa. We have been informed that the ongoing anti social behaviour issues at the store have greatly reduced which has a positive effect on the shoppers.” PCSO Kyle Maiden Mobile 07825 503907 Pictured are PCSO’S Kyle Maiden and Lisa Thomas with Co – Op Café manager Sian Cornish.
Council mergers are all over the news at the moment, and as I write these words Bridgend County Borough Council is waiting to hear back from the Welsh Government on our own expression of interest in exploring a voluntary merger with the Vale of Glamorgan. We already work in partnership with councils to the east and west of us, but having carefully considered all of the facts, we feel a merger with the Vale would be the most beneficial for local residents as there are clear advantages in terms of education, transport, the economy, health, and social care. This is still just the bottom step on a very long ladder. No final decisions have been made yet and there are a host of practical issues that need to be resolved along the way, but if a voluntary merger went ahead, the earliest it could happen is 1 April 2018 - two years earlier than the timetable for compulsory mergers. If the Welsh Government approves our expression of interest, work will begin on a comprehensive business case in support of a merger with the Vale, and we’ll be keeping residents, partners, staff and trade unions fully informed as the situation develops. Budget benefits from Welsh Liberal Democrats influence This year’s Assembly budget process has been particularly difficult. That is a consequence of the austerity measures that the UK Government has had to adopt so as to rebalance the budget. Because Labour does not have a majority they needed to do a deal with the Welsh Liberal Democrats. We secured major investment amounting to £223m over two years: – An increase in the Pupil Deprivation Grant: in 2015/16 each school will receive £1,050 for every pupil eligible to receive free schools meals, increasing to £1,150 for 2016/17; – The Pupil Deprivation Grant will be extended to under-5s, worth £300 per pupil on free school meals; – A Youth Travellers Concessionary Fare Scheme’ for 16-18 year olds worth nearly £15m; – Extra childcare investment for further education students in Wales who are parents through a pilot scheme promoted by the National Union of Students; – Funding for around 5,000 new apprenticeships; – £95m capital investment in infrastructure that will provide a strong boost to jobs and the economy. Our priority has always been to build a stronger economy and a fairer society, enabling opportunity for all – and that is exactly what our achievements in this budget are helping to deliver. Peter Black AM Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net www.peterblack.blogspot.com Seaside News | 20
Have you signed an e-petition recently? If so, the chances are it probably didn’t make it to be debated in the House of Commons. Since 2011, petitions with more than 100,000 signatures have been able to trigger debate in the House. This scheme has been quite effective, but there are still thousands of signatures on thousands of petitions, which never make it to the threshold and therefore end up not having any impact. This month, The House of Commons Procedure Committee published plans to allow people to send e-petitions directly to the House. The plans also entail setting up a Petitions Committee to communicate directly with petitioners. This will let Parliament gain key insights from petitioners by inviting them to give oral evidence or referring them to select committees. Members will be able to seek out information, and propose debates in the Commons. This is an excellent idea, as increased accountability and access to a voice in Parliament for people doing difficult work will hopefully be able to make big changes: those e-petitions which do reach the threshold will be more likely to be heard in the House, and those which don’t will be more likely to reach their intended audience. Peter Alan strikes gold for fourth consecutive year at The Estate Agency of the Year Awards 2014 Peter Alan has been awarded The Sunday Times Estate Agent Award for Best Wales Estate Agency for the fourth year running. Wales’ leading estate agent received the accolade on Friday 5th December, at The Lancaster London Hotel at The Estate Agency of the Year Awards, held in association with The Sunday Times and The Times. The winners were presented with their awards by Michelle Mone OBE, one of the UK's most successful female entrepreneurs, with renowned journalist, author and newsreader Penny Smith acting as compere. The award judges report said, “For a large agency the standards across all branches are excellent and the panel was pleased to note real evidence of significant investment in the business. To maintain these standards over a number of years is notable and the fact that the directors continue to invest in their systems, processes and teams demonstrates an innate understanding of what they need to do to stay ahead of the competition. The aim of the board is to create a warm and friendly environment for both clients and staff, and this extends to their Corporate Social Responsibility commitment. Peter Alan is a well-rounded company which is really going somewhere and the panel looks forward to seeing its continued development in future.” Award winners were decided following a rigorous and thorough judging process by a panel of 19 industry experts who assessed initial entry submissions before conducting an extensive review of the entrants, which included over 150 hours of telephone interviews and mystery shopping exercises. The whole of the judging process was overseen by The Property Ombudsman, Christopher Hamer, and Mark Hayward, Managing Director of the NAEA acted as Arbiter. Now in its twelfth year as a dedicated competition, these awards have become widely recognised as the most prestigious and difficult to win. With more entrants than ever before, over 5,000 offices were represented this year, but only the very best of the best were crowned as winners. Christine Armsby, local Porthcawl branch manager said, “I am thrilled Peter Alan have seen such success at these national awards, having been crowned the best estate agency in Wales for four consecutive years. It is testament to the hard work of our fantastic staff and shows that we are continuously achieving high standards to help customers in Wales find their perfect home.”

News New Support For Local Businesses
Keeping Warm This Winter
A new year brings fresh opportunities, so if you are a budding entrepreneur or an established local business, the Enterprise Facilitation Programme may be of interest. Open to anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business or who already owns a business, the programme is offering free expert advice and guidance on how to get ahead in 2014. It consists of a network of around 50 local businesspeople that volunteer their time to help others develop their own business models and ideas. The guidance that they provide is confidential and covers all types of business whether they are large or small, just starting up or already established, social or private in nature, or based at home or in an office. Bridgend County Borough Council has appointed enterprise facilitator Andrew Care to oversee the programme throughout the area, and part of his role will be to provide direct advice and guidance as well as helping to locate further appropriate support. Part-funded by the Welsh Government, the programme has been expanded following a successful pilot scheme held in Blaenau Gwent. To find out more about how the programme could help you, contact Andrew Care on 01656 815318 or email andrew.care@ bridgend.gov.uk
Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! Happy New Year and hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas. After a cold December, I wanted to remind everyone about the support available to help with energy bills and the importance of keeping warm this winter. The Welsh Government’s Nest scheme is available to help households keep warm and save money on our energy bills. Nest is open to all householders in Wales and provides free advice on saving energy, money management, fuel tariffs, and benefit entitlement. Nest can also provide free home improvement to those who own or privately rent their home and if you or someone you live with receives a means tested benefit and live in a hard to heat home. I also thought it would be helpful to remind people of the £140 discount on electricity bills provided through the Warm Home Discount scheme. This is offered by some of the larger energy suppliers to people getting the guarantee credit element of pension credit and to some other people on low income, depending on the energy supplier. If you think you may be eligible for the Warm Home Discount or free energy saving home improvements, or just need some energy saving advice, contact Nest on freephone 0808 808 2244, or visit www.nestwales.org.uk.

We Need To Support Our GPs My postbox – and inbox – has been this month steadily filling with concerned patients and GPs, all calling for urgent action to tackle a growing crisis unfolding in general practice. In recent years the share of funding for patient care in general practice has been falling – from 8.8% of NHS funding in 2005/06 to 7.8% in 2011/12. Real-terms spending on general practice in Wales dropped by £27 million compared to four years ago. General practice is the cornerstone of the NHS and I am extremely concerned that patient care could be put at risk if urgent action isn’t taken. Recent polls of GPs have revealed that nearly half have had to cut back on the range of services they provide for their patients, over 70% are worried that patient waiting times are going to get longer in the next two years, and 49% feel they can no longer guarantee safe patient care. A relatively small increase in the share of NHS funding spent in general practice - from 7.8 to 11% by 2017 - would transform care for patients and benefit the NHS by alleviating pressure on our hospitals. I’ll be raising this as a matter of urgency in the Assembly. BETHAN JENKINS AM Plaid Cymru www.bethanjenkins.org Seaside News | 22

News Sea Defence Funding To Stop For Beach Road Householders in Beach Road, Newton, have not had much to celebrate this Christmas. For Welsh Natural Resources Minister Carl Sergeant announced that Welsh Government would stop funding sea defences in that area in 20 years time. This news has been a body blow to residents who have been left facing an uncertain future – and with a devaluing asset. How much will anyone’s house be worth in 19 years time? Indeed, how much will they be worth now - and could anyone get a mortgage to buy them? People are suffering a form of blight – one deliberately created by Welsh Government. And, ironically, even if sea levels do not rise, the risk-averse mortgage and insurance industries, who have been heavily influenced by the green lobby, will act as though they have. It is a tragic situation, which leaves residents who have paid out hundreds of thousands of pounds for their homes, trapped in limbo. Action must be taken by Welsh Government to restore the value of these homes. We can only hope that funding will be found to keep maintaining sea defences and that a declaration to that effect will be made. Byron Davies Welsh Conservative Regional AM for South Wales West
New Support For Local Businesses A new year brings fresh opportunities, so if you are a budding entrepreneur or an established local business, the Enterprise Facilitation Programme may be of interest. To find out more about how the programme could help you, contact Andrew Care on 01656 815318 or email andrew. care@bridgend.gov.uk

Team Velinmanjaro update
Hi folks, and a happy New Year. At the beginning of the New Year, nearly everyone starts to think about their new year’s resolutions. Things they will look to give up and other things they will promise themselves to do. We look to enrich our lives in some way. Unfortunately however, these promises are often short lived. The bible says that if we seek to receive an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness we will reign in life (Romans 5 v 17). In a nutshell this means to get connected with God, who will transform our lives for the better. This starts when we first get connected (the gift of righteousness) and also continues through our life as we stay connected (an abundance of grace). Jesus said “I have come that they may have life in abundance” (John 10 v 10). This sort of life is eternal life that starts as soon as we connect with God. It’s a life where we can find supernatural peace, supernatural joy and supernatural righteousness. Even in the midst of all life’s struggles we can saw on eagles wings as it where. This is the best resolution ever in my opinion. God bless! Neil Harvey
On 26th November we visited Velindre Cancer Centre to switch on their new internet service. The money we raised climbing Kilimanjaro has been used to install wi-fi throughout the hospital. Head of fundraising at Velindre, Andrew Morris said “It can be hugely frustrating for patients and visitors who cannot keep in touch with their friends, or access social media; time can drag very slowly and as patient centred care is at the heart of everything we strive to do at Velindre. This was a situation we were very keen to rectify. The fantastic support we have had from Team Velinmanjaro has made this possible. This money has allowed us to introduce this new service, so thousands and thousands of patients will benefit because of their fantastic efforts.” The free internet service for patients and visitors means they will be able to use their own devices, to keep in touch with family & friends using Skype, check emails, download films etc. This service will greatly improve the quality of their time spent at Velindre. This wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of all those who sponsored us and helped us raise the total of £44,000. Thank you all very much once again. Louise Piper-Jones
Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group Parkinsons does not go away. It is hard to come to terms with. If you need support it’s here in Porthcawl. We meet the last Friday of every month in the Unitarian Chapel, Nottage. We have speakers on many subjects, including rationing during the war years, lifeboat service, exercise, speech therapy and the Romans in the local area. We have lunch once a month, which is enjoyed by all. We also do an exercise class, which is good for us. Other events include a Christmas dinner and the summer outing. This year’s outing we went to Swansea marina, with a boat trip up the Tawe and a meal in the restaurant at the top of the Tower. For further information contact 01656 783071

Porthcawl Townswomens Guild News A Happy New Year to you all! Why not make a New Year resolution to come to one of our meetings and maybe join us. You will be very welcome! We had a busy end to November and start of December with a games afternoon, a visit to the Pavilion to see an excellent play about Edith Cavell and two Christmas lunches - one with our Federation in Cardiff, as well as our own lunch at Bridgend College. As I write this we still have our own Christmas Party to look forward to. Our next meeting is on January 14th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall, when we will welcome back a favourite speaker with his photographic presentation of ‘Along the Romantic Road’. We all like a bit of romance in our lives so come and see what we have to offer. For further information telephone (01656) 772157. Dorothy Thomas

FEATURES Winter Skies
Porthcawl Inner Wheel News
Both planets that orbit closest to the Sun can be seen very near together in the southwestern sky after sunset for the remainder of the month. Venus is bright enough to form shadows and is far more luminous than any star. Mercury is the innermost planet and can be seen to the right of Venus. It will outshine any of the stars in that that part of the sky but is quite low on the horizon. Venus will continue to climb higher for the next few months but Mercury will disappear to return again in April. Mars has now been continuously visible for more than a year although the planet is very low in the southwest and has reached the far side of the Sun in its orbit. It’s currently quite faint and won’t really return to our skies until 2016. However, the giant planet Jupiter can be seen shining very brightly in the southeast near the constellation of Leo. The splendid star to the left of Jupiter is Regulus, but if you use binoculars to scan to the right of Jupiter you will find a stunning open cluster of 1000 stars called Praesepe. Our December monthly meeting and Christmas Dinner were held in the Grove Golf Club. Club business was discussed before the dinner. Diana Richardson was thanked for arranging the day out in Gloucester and the visit to The Lion King. Both events were very successful. Traditionally at this meeting the club decides which charities to support financially from our Charity Fund. This year we have chosen to donate to Air Ambulance, Autism Society Wales, Blood Bikes and Ebola via the Red Cross. The club worked with Rotary in the arrangements for the Christmas Tree Festival held in All Saints Church. Seventy trees representing many local organisations, churches, chapels and schools filled the church. The Inner Wheel tree commemorated the ninety years since the formation of Inner Wheel in Manchester. There are now 14,000 clubs worldwide. The Inner Wheel Service will be held on Sunday 11th January, 2015 at St. David’s Church, Nottage. Following the business meeting we enjoyed our Christmas Dinner and then a quiz arranged by Gill Gore. It was a great evening, enjoyed by all. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent

FEATURES Life With Porthcawl Lions By now Porthcawl Lions Christmas events will be over, hopefully happy, memories, but more about those next month. The club would, however, like to thank the Y Centre for housing Santa’s grotto and the Hi-Tide for hosting the Boxing Day fun run as well as Paul Fielding and Arfon Dwfor Training for their sponsorship of the run. Unfortunately it has been decided to cancel the Sunday car boot sales at the Hi-Tide until further notice, but once again thanks to the Hi-Tide for their support. Events planned for 2015 include book sales, a WW1 concert and a table-top sale, together with all the usual annual events. With another busy year ahead Porthcawl Lions are really keen to welcome new members and are hoping to hold a ‘meet the Porthcawl Lions social evening’ in the near future. As well as more members, the club also desperately needs more storage space for books and equipment, so if anyone knows of a garage, water-tight shed or any other spare space the club could borrow or rent for a reasonable sum please phone Gloria on 01656 772344. Finally, thank you all for your support throughout 2014 and all members would like to wish you a happy and peaceful new year. John Cosson

Porthcawl Primary Kick Off Christmas At Mallards Reach Bellway Homes Wales put on a Christmas big band celebration recently with the help of a group of school children. Guests enjoyed a concert by 10 and 11 year-old pupils from Porthcawl Primary’s brass band, after they took over the show home at Bellway’s Mallards Reach development. Carly Maidment, sales manager for Bellway Homes, said: “It was great having the brass band at the development and it was a real treat to meet the pupils and hear them play. “It’s important to us to work closely with the local communities where we are building. By inviting local residents to the site we hope to make it part of the local community from the beginning.” Mallards Reach, off Newton Nottage Road, consists of three and four-bedroom homes with open plan living spaces, single and double garages and spacious family gardens. Y Cefn Gwyrdd Well, we managed to pull it off just before Christmas! I am referring of course to our night of Christmas entertainment at the Green Hall. Our aim was to fill the hall with its beautifully re-furbished stage, curtains and lights and this was fulfilled thanks to a jam packed, enthusiastic Cefn audience. The focus of the evening was a performance by Swansea’s Lighthouse Theatre of Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales and a little known tale by Richard Burton entitled A Christmas Story. These were both beautifully portrayed by Adrian Metcalf, who had the audience enthralled for an hour. Because this was a Cefn concert local ‘aristes took part and Alun Battrick [Ffordd Y Gyfraith] played guitar and sang one of his own compositions while the irrepressible Marc Weinzweig entertained with a beautiful violin solo of A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square. Bedford Road’s Bethan Nia and Brychan Llyr performed an atmospheric ‘Baled Sger’ followed by a beautiful Plygain Carol (which they also performed on Bryn Terfel’s Christmas show on S4C). The night ended with a Gwyrdd version of Under Milkwood and the never to be forgotten Captain Cat, Singing Nun and Scuba Divers! Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! masoncj4@hotmail.com John Mason
News From The Talbot A Happy New Year to all – the Christmas season is now over for another year. Several events took place at the Talbot, including the Wednesday and Friday Christmas lunches when Julie, our cook, and her kitchen team, cooked and served over 110 turkey dinners to our members. We can now look forward to the events booked for spring season, commencing with a Welsh Themed Evening in mid March, (faggots, peas and chips supper!) again with the very popular Keith David, the vocal comedian who entertained us at Christmas. Following our very successful Tinsel and Turkey weekend away, we have already filled one coach, but hope to take more names to fill a second coach. Some works have been carried out in the Rees Centre, and in order to avoid confusion when talking about each office, we have named them the Aberbaiden office, the Bryndu office, and when alterations have been made, the Cynffig office, with the main hall being called the Rees Hall, retaining the name of the original building. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Laleston WI News
Kenfig WI
The December meeting of Laleston WI was a Christmas Party hosted by the committee with the tables beautifully decorated with floral arrangements made by Sandra Scott and Barbara Rees. After the president Margaret Aylen had greeted the members and thanked them all for the delicious buffet they had prepared, the evening proceeded with an amusing quiz. This was followed by a game of ‘Musical Bingo’ which also doubled up as a great sing-a-long which was much enjoyed by everyone and the bingo was eventually won by Valerie Lock. The grand finale of the evening was a short pantomime performed by the committee, which generated great hilarity. The members went home with a small gift each and their WI Programme for 2015. All agreed that it had been an excellent evening and were looking forward to the Christmas meal at the Mason’s Arms later in the month. Our next meeting on January 8th 2015 at 7.15pm in the Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club) will be a musical evening with guest Mike Boyles. Please come along if you are interested, visitors are always welcome. For further information call Margaret on 01656 660384 or Diane on 01656 656600. Margaret Aylen
We held our December meeting at Cornelly Methodist Church. After the formal business had been completed and with Christmas in mind, Ceri Roberts gave an interesting talk on ‘Christmas Around The World’, explaining all the different traditions other countries have and where they originated. The evening was rounded off with refreshments, which included a special treat of mince pies made by our treasurer Muriel Stubbs. On 9th December we held our annual Christmas Concert in aid of charity and despite dreadful weather conditions the evening was well attended and a great success, especially the singing by the choir ‘One Achord’. We now look forward to 2015 when we have our own comprehensive programme of events together with the celebrations organised to commemorate the centenary of the NFWI. Please come and join us on the first Monday of each month at 6.45pm. Happy New Year to everyone. Anita Jones (Press Secretary)

Tuesday 9th December was the Christmas Party of held in the Talbot Centre, Kenfig Hill. Marjorie, our president, thanked the members for coming. The Tuesday before, we had our Christmas dinner and outing to Abby Cwm Hir. It was a great success and Ann was thanked for organizing it. Our members were given the opportunity to purchase the Pin Cushions we had made in our craft group and used to decorate our Christmas tree for the Christmas tree festival in Margam Park. All monies raised will be for the friends of Mynydd Cynffig, WI and The Talbot Centre. Members enjoyed pass the parcel with Enid reading out a story with lots of lefts and rights, lots of good food, good company, Christmas music, and lots of laughs we all left in good spirits. So there is nothing left to do but to wish you a Happy New Year, looking forward to next year with all that the W.I. can offer. Our next meeting is in January 13th - come and enjoy 2015 with us. Porthcawl WI We held our Christmas meal at the Fairways Hotel, and it was also a celebration of our second year as a WI. This again turned out to be a very enjoyable afternoon. Our WI also decorated a Christmas tree and entered the Christmas tree festival which took place at All Saints Church at the beginning of December. Judy Harvey also gave a lovely floral demonstration at one of our meetings and showed members how to make Christmas displays. We also had the pleasure once again of welcoming the children from Oldcastle School Choir who entertained us for our Christmas meeting, accompanied by their teacher Mrs R Harris and colleagues. Members enjoyed the event, and the meeting finished with our usual Christmas party. If you would like to join us, you will be assured of a warm welcome. Finance New ISA Death Benefits The Chancellor recently announced that ISAs will become transferrable on death to a surviving spouse or civil partner. This is still subject to change following final legislation, but HM Treasury has outlined the new system as follows. The surviving spouse will be given an additional, one-off ISA allowance, equal to the value of the deceased’s ISA holdings. This will enable the surviving spouse to re-shelter the deceased’s ISA assets into an ISA in their own name. How it will work - an example: An investor holding £50,000 of ISA savings and investments died on 5 December 2014. From the date of death to the distribution of the value at probate, the ISA tax wrapper is lost and the £50,000 becomes subject to income tax on any interest or dividend income generated or capital gains tax where gains are made. Following probate, the value passes to the surviving spouse. On 6 April 2015, at the start of the new tax year, the spouse has a one off opportunity to shelter the £50,000 into an ISA in their name in addition to their own £15,240 ISA allowance, giving a combined allowance of £65,240. This could be subscribed to a new ISA or an existing ISA. Will this save inheritance tax? No, this change will not save inheritance tax. The value of ISAs are subject to inheritance tax on death with one main exception - where ISA investments qualify for Business Property Relief such as qualifying Alternative Investment Market (AIM) shares held for a two year period. If you would like to discuss the changes or would like further information on ISAs that qualify for Business Property Relief, please do not hesitate to contact us. So What Does 75 Pence Buy? Think hard now – what can you really get for around 75 pence these days? A can of fizzy drink like Coke; a small loaf of bread; maybe a sausage roll or cream cake? The point is that most people would never miss 75 pence on a daily basis, indeed many buy lunch at work or from a corner shop and pay perhaps, £2 to £3 a day. And the reason we’re looking at all this? Well, I had a call from a young guy a week or so ago, married with a young family and he’d had an accident on the way home from work one evening and wouldn’t be able to work for some time to come, having broken his leg. He just didn’t know what to do. He’d worked for a very small firm, just half a dozen employees and where the boss simply couldn’t afford to pay him his normal pay. With statutory sick pay little more than £80 a week, how would he and the family manage? With a mortgage, Council Tax, food and all his other bills to pay, he was in trouble. Yet, had he taken the time and trouble at some time to speak to a financial adviser, to look at what an income protection policy would have cost him, he would have found that he could have had a policy paying him £1,000 a month for around the equivalent cost of just...75 pence a day. others, he was paying more than that for lunch at work. Certainly a pint of lager in the football club is around four times the daily cost of getting him that £1,000 a month from a very well-known insurance company. It’s no fun when you find yourself, almost always unexpectedly, on the wrong end of some bad luck – but you can do something to at least cover yourself ...and it doesn’t cost the earth, as this young man discovered, but too late. Just ask yourself a simple question – how much would YOU get if you lost your income, even for a few weeks only. Call us today on 01656 – 782545 and we’ll be delighted to assist you in sorting it out. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545
Pension Reforms The Most Radical Reforms This Century In Budget 2014, Chancellor George Osborne promised greater pension freedom from 6th April 2015. People will be able to access as much or as little of their defined contribution pension as they want and pass on their hard-earned pensions to their families tax-free. For some people, an annuity may still be the right option, whereas others might want to take their whole tax-free lump sum and convert the rest to drawdown. Accessing Money Generally, most companies will allow you to take the full amount out in one go. You can access the first 25% of your pension fund tax-free. The remainder is added to your income for the year, to be taxed at your marginal income tax rate. Pensions can be confusing therefore it will be important to obtain professional advice to ensure that you access your money safely, without unnecessary costs and a potential tax bill. Bird Watch: Dunnock
Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club
The Dunnock is often referred to as a Hedge Sparrow but it isn’t and doesn’t even belong to the same family! The Dunnock is most commonly seen foraging under bushes and has mouselike movements. This bird is often referred to as dull, but seen up close you’ll notice that the Dunnock has a rich brown plumage streaked with black on top, and slate grey under parts; adults have brilliant mahogany-red eyes. Some Cuckoos choose to lay their egg in the nests of the Dunnock; even though the egg looks nothing like that of her own the surrogate mother doesn’t seem to notice. BTO GBW data show that despite their overall long-term decline, garden numbers have remained stable. Around 80% of Garden Bird Watchers usually record Dunnocks using their gardens at this time of year. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden Bird Watch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. January is a good time for planning. High on my to-do list is a small herb garden, close to my back door and only for herbs that I will actually use in the kitchen like curly leaved parsley. Flat leaved parsley is also a must but this I grow in the vegetable garden. I will sow the seeds this month and keep the pot in a warm place until they germinate. Later in the year the plants will be grown in rows and harvested in batches. Stalks and leaves can be dried in a salad spinner then chopped and frozen ready for use when required. Because they are fairly dry they freeze loose so can be used a spoonful at a time. If the weather is mild later on in the month I may make a start on pruning shrubs that flowered July to December such as buddleia and winter jasmine but will leave lots of seed heads for the birds until the end of February. Readers are welcome to a talk on practical vegetable growing on Tuesday 27th January in the Community Centre at 7.30pm. There is a £1.50 charge to non-members. Happy New Year! Veronica Davies
Gardening Diary (January) With the New Year upon us it’s a good time to start planning how we want our garden to look this coming year. As it’s offseason, it’s an economical time to buy herbaceous perennials, mulch and other garden products and to think about a new design or how to enhance what we already have. Although the weather isn’t great to be out in the garden we can still plan the year ahead from the safety of our armchairs. You could get inspiration through looking at magazines, online or talking to a professional! Specific jobs you could do this month are to continue with general tidy ups, clear those weedy beds ready for Spring and protect your tender plants / shrubs from frost with fleeces or straw. Following high winds it is a good idea to check the condition of any trees in your garden. You may need to remove any rotten or broken limbs that could cause damage to your property or the tree itself. Professional help can always be sought if you are not happy to do this yourself. Finally enjoy those crisp winter days and remember to keep feeding the birds and other wildlife in your garden. Pete Ryall ecogreengardens.co.uk (see our advert on page 9)
Laleston Gardening Club Another Christmas come and gone, hope everyone enjoyed. So some serious thoughts of what jobs need to be done in January. Recycle the Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch. Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days. Inspect stored tubers of Dahlias and Begonias for rot or drying out. Prune apple trees, and perhaps start forcing rhubarb. Garlic is a key ingredient in much of our cooking and nothing beats the flavour of a homegrown crop. Garlic needs a long growing season in the UK, so early planting between November and the New Year. Discard seeds that are too old. Happy new gardening year. Gwen Bradford

Make the right decision for 2015 with an Advance Decision! With the start of the new year, you may have already made a number of New Year’s Resolutions. However, illnesses brought by the cold months of winter will often highlight our health and we will find ourselves thinking what would happen if we were unable to communicate our wishes regarding our health and treatment to others. In particular, if we become unable to communicate our wishes easily, or lose the mental capacity for decision making, due to illness or an emergency situation many of us are concerned that health and social care professionals might be oblivious to them. So what can we do? An Advance Decision is a declaration that can be made by you which will set out what medical treatment you would want to refuse should you be unable to make or communicate a decision about your treatment; this includes the right to refuse life sustaining treatment. The Advance Decision will only become valid once you lose the ability to make or communicate such decisions, but is legally binding. People are often confused about the difference between a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare and an Advance Decision. The Lasting Power of Attorney only authorises your attorneys to discuss with medical professionals what they think you would want to happen in terms of treatment. An Advance Decision clearly sets out your wishes and is legally binding. The benefit of the latter is that the burden is taken aware from your loved ones. Emma Hardwidge, Head of the Wills and Probate department at RLE Law commented that “the benefit of having an Advance Decision is that you have better control over what will happen when a decision needs to be made about life sustaining treatment. Making a decision in advance can help reduce distressing situations for your family, moving the burden of making difficult decisions away from them, and allows you to refuse burdensome treatments and express a wish for a natural death. It also enables you to make ethically based decisions about future care, for example you may object to the way research has been conducted to develop medications”. You could also consider preparing an Advance Statement which allows you to make decisions about how you would like to be treated such as how your religious or spiritual beliefs should be reflected in your care; choices about where you want to be cared for; and how you would like care to be delivered. Whilst it is not legally binding, health care professionals will be aware of the document and are asked to consider it when making decisions, although they will always act in your best interest.
Emma Hardwidge Director & Head of Probate Department
It is important to carefully consider your wishes if you think you may want to prepare an Advance Decision. This is of particular importance if you are in good health and do not have a life threatening illness because you may feel differently about matters if you were suffering from a life threatening illness and had the reality of dealing with such an illness everyday. We would also recommend that you involve your GP or Consultant to enable you to discuss which treatments you would wish to decline and ensure that you have a full understanding of the possibility of discomfort and putting your life at risk. This will ensure that you are fully informed of the impact on you of refusing such treatment. Advance Decisions are often overlooked as a means of ensuring your wishes are carried out until your death. However, drafted correctly, these are invaluable documents that will assist both you and your loved ones at a very difficult time.

What Is Reflexology?
Our retreat centre at St Clare’s is closing. We thank the sisters and the Catholic community for the wonderful retreats that we have experienced at this special place. This year will see the beginning of a new monthly meeting called the full moon meditation group. The group will be a transient group where we will meet on the full moon of each month, we will either visit the Sanghapadipa temple or practice meditation in the woods of Merthyr Mawr Dunes. The group will be supported by the Pali Sutta’s - the old and original teachings of the Buddha. The group will be supported by a forest monk. Dharma House Wales is also running a meditation day on the 31st January -the theme being ‘take time to sit’. Porthcawl YMCA recently hosted a 10 week mindfulness programme sponsored by Porthcawl Town Council. Gareth Clode, the facilitator, has informed me that he will be organising many free ‘Introduction To Mindfulness’ days. Tracey Evans, after organising her ‘go slow’ day, will be facilitating further days and a monthly meeting point. For a full update on all our projects please join the Bridgend Meditation Community on Facebook, or get on our our email list at: evansneville@aol.com Happy New Year! Neville Evans
Reflexology is a theory and therapy that uses the feet as a map, or mirror, of the whole body. By manipulating and applying pressure to certain parts of the feet, the whole body can be retuned and brought back into balance. What are the benefits? Reflexology can help to relieve stress and tension and has a deeply relaxing effect. How does it work? Reflexology works on the principle that the whole body, from head to toe, is connected. This connection is represented by ten longitudinal zones - developed by Dr William Fitzgerald. NATURAL TREATMENT OF MUSCULAR SKELETAL PAIN & DISCOMFORT Detox. It is not enough in this day and age to simply eat the best food. Though diet will always be the foundation of health, our toxic environment requires us to cleanse our bodies of chemicals, heavy metals, parasites, and pathogens twice a year (or more) if we are to achieve optimum health. Although a full cleanse involves the entire body, the gut is the first and primary focus. The goal is to cleanse the intestinal tract of bad bacteria and candida and repopulate it with good bacteria. Candida feeds on our body’s tissues as well as our nutrients as does bad bacteria. Both exude toxins. Cleaning up the gut also aids the immune system. Two of the best things you can do to aid in a detox, is to drink a lot of cranberry lemonade sweetened with stevia, and eat salads with garlic. POEMS Tragedy 1914 -18
A Happy New Year
A travesty of sense, a needless war It’s spark a fading Habsburg Balkan sore A slide to conflict seeming by default And none with nous enough to call a halt With Despot Cousins mobilizing prides And Nations weighed by treaty taking sides As men of state eschewed a prudent pause Embattled Prussians, willful, seized the cause. They own the blame for universal grief Which seen in hindsight challenges belief, And victory myth when Autumn leaves were shed Not leaves that fell; ten million blameless dead. Those saddled Chiefs, untrained for static hell Of war entrenched beneath fragmenting shell Or fruitless forays wading through the wire In forlorn hole to greet the scything fire. Dispensing men with seeming blind largesse As in some strange attrition game of chess Expanding forces, pointless, past stalemate As if no other gambit deemed by fate. Red hatted pieces plotting fateful dawns The chateau’d marshals moving shattered pawns On board of blood red squares of party worth For fleeting gain of bleak and blasted earth Depleting ranks in decimating war As Generals unrelenting called for more To aid a carnage past the human pale At Somme, Verdun and stinking Passchendaele. All nations prayed, and mothers for their sons, As homebound loved ones, toiling, fed the guns Your God be with you boys! Destroy the Huns! On field perverse with echo “Gott mit uns,” Four tragic years; six empires fought and bled in needless war; ten million needless dead To gain but trace or vengeful peace for some The fuse of cataclysm still to come. For stolen youth that took life’s winding path, A name in stone their epitaph, Ask if the cause was just-ask not the price Same God, same war, same senseless sacrifice Percy William Mellow, Porthcawl
A whole New Year, but first, just this day To face with joy as we go on our way We’ve fresh air to breath and a glad new song To sing, and new fears we must bid ‘begone.’ New friends to greet but our old ones to treasure And always new blessings in richest of measure So we welcome this year knowing life is for living A gift from our God, always loving and giving. A Thank You To My Mum & Dad From toddler to teenager Your love has been like gold. Nurturing, encouraging, and always a hand to hold. I know God was smiling the day he gave me Mum and Dad. Your love is like the summer sun, All warm and bright and jolly, Like snuggling under the covers in winter, All snug and safe - no worries. I know I’ve tried your patience and all the saints too! Tested you to the limit, but knew you loved me every minute. Through the highs and lows, Your love like an anchor kept me from drifting. My love for you will go on and on. Never enough do I say it. A Tribute To Those Who Served The sea looked choppy for another storm To where the troops that day would swarm On the south coast, ships sheltered in every bay Ships, all kinds, sizes to be crossing that day The armies of allies, new crossed the channel swell Soon found on struggling ashore far from well As they left their boats, with some strife As enemy fighters striking the area, made a fight for life The boats large and small from destroyers to subs, landing craft Men shot down beside you and oh what a din! While struggling through water from the boats crowded there The landing craft of men with there fighting tools Scrambling ashore from chest high as if they were fools But fools they were never while heading for shore For folks back home and in Britain To be free ever more God Bless Them All Tudor P Evans, Porthcawl

BOOK OF THE MONTH: The Actaeon Tide by Tom Anderson This debut novel by local author Tom Anderson is a deftly written blend of magic realism, wrapped around a mysterious death and soaked in sea water. Noah, a debt collector and investigator in his late twenties, just wants to save enough money so he can get away and surf but then comes the job that changes everything. A woman in the Vale thinks her huge house is hiding the darkest of secrets. Drawn to the money and aided by the advice of occultspecialist Alys, Noah lifts the lid on a bizarre world in which depravity and deceit are in charge, where night time covers the inexplicable and where the dream of escaping to ride the waves is growing out of reach. We have books to help you fulfil your news Year’s Resolutions, whether it is learn a skill, lose weight, start a business or escape to sunnier climes come and see us soon.

Arts A Film Maker’s Point of View
Stag’s World Of Rock
Carl Richards, a film producer colleague of mine, said to me one day: “Tone, this seems to be a new direction for you, because it’s more like natural history.” He was referring to my production entitled ‘Kenfig’, shot in 2005, which explores the massive area of sand dunes where once a busy medieval borough town existed, the third largest centre of population in Glamorgan during the late Middle Ages. The story of it being buried beneath the shifting sand is well known, and nowadays it is a National Nature Reserve, known for its rare orchids. I spent many happy days there in 2005, exploring the area with my 16mm movie camera, searching for the tiny fen orchid which stands barely a couple of inches high, and fascinated by the wonderful bee orchid, undoubtedly my favourite. A dragonfly obligingly settled in front of my camera lens long enough to get a shot of it, and an unusual butterfly lingered on the top of a wooden post whilst its picture was taken. I accompanied the Kenfig Society on one of its archaeological digs, and recorded some of the ancient artefacts that have been discovered lying just beneath the surface of the ground. ‘Kenfig’ is one of my shorter documentaries, but possibly one of my most unusual films. Hope you enjoyed Xmas. Well done to Steve Maitland Thomas for his snow globe antics and making Porthcawl’s Xmas Event good as it’s been pretty dire the last few years! He does more for this town than anyone! Hope our own music icon Steve Strange makes a full recovery after his stint in hospital. Got a call from Cornelly’s Gary Rose who’s releasing a self-penned charity single ‘God’s Kaleidoscope’ in aid of Bethel Community Church in Kenfig Hill, where it will be on sale soon. He’s recording it in Paul Childs’s studio and I will take up Paul’s kind offer to have a look around. I get dozens of inquiries where to obtain my 90s band Secret Army’s CDs – well, there will be a ‘Best of’ out soon and I’ve a single out next May in time for the General Election, so I’m going to be busy. Watch this space! Best of luck to Andy and staff at The Seagull - since being refitting it really is fantastic! One of the biggest selling rock stars on the planet, Justin Heywood from the Moody Blues, will be playing a rare solo show at the Pavilion on July 2nd 2015. Get your tickets quick. More on Justin next time. Finally, congratulations to fellow columnist Anthony Hontoir on rave reviews on his book ‘Free and Easy’ now available on Kindle and www.downwoodfilms.com Keep the music news coming. Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society We’ve had some excellent presentations this season, as well as great practical evenings. We also held Club Competition One, which was split into two sections, one for prints and one for digital images, with a trophy for each. Harry Gardiner expertly judged both competitions. Print section: 2 prints achieved maximum points (20), ‘King of the Road’ by Dave Jones and ‘Give me a Cwtch’ by Martyn Derbyshire. The eventual winner was Martyn Derbyshire. There were no prints with 19 points, but 18 points were awarded to prints by Heather Roper, Trevor Owen and Glyn Edmunds. Digital Section: 3 images achieved maximum points, ‘A wet Coal Tit’ by Geoff Baker, ‘Lily’ by Trevor Owen and ‘Morris’ by Richard Craze. The eventual winner was Trevor Owen. 19 points were awarded to images by Glyn Edmunds, Robert Dorr and Trevor Owen. Congratulations to Martyn and Trevor for winning the competitions and thanks to all who participated. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Glyn Edmunds

Art in Focus This month the focus is on a pretty impressive portrait of one of Wales’ most beneficiary patrons: Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn. Sir Watkin went on his Grand Tour in 1768. He was accompanied by Edward Hamilton, a cavalry officer and amateur musician, and Thomas Apperley, his ‘governor’ who had been with him at Oxford. After visiting Paris and Florence the party arrived in Rome, where Sir Watkin commissioned this portrait from Pompeo Batoni, who was the most celebrated painter in the city. This is his finest ‘Grand Tour’ portrait. Sir Watkin stands on the left holding a crayon and a copy of a Raphael fresco. At the table, Apperley draws his patron’s attention to a passage from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Hamilton, a flute in his hand, gestures admiringly to Apperley’s display of erudition. An allegorical statue of painting, located in the niche behind, emphasises the three men’s love of the arts. It is a painting that portrays Sir Watkin as a man of distinction and of great artistic taste. As a patron and collector Sir Watkin was a remarkable man. Come and learn more about this fascinating artwork by attending one of my tours. Email me on josephinelewington@yahoo.co.uk Josephine Lewington MA Seaside News | 47

SUSTAINABLE WALES ‘GREEN ROOM’
Sustainable Wales is delighted to announce its next ‘Green Room’ event will feature Porthcawl writer Tom Anderson’s first novel, ‘The Actaeon Tide’, published by Parthian. Tom is well known for his accounts of surfing around the world, described in volumes such as ‘Chasing Dean’ and ‘Riding the Magic Carpet’. The Actaeon Tide is Anderson’s first novel and marks an ambitious step forward in his writing. The book has been described as “a tale of ancient myth meeting new money, set at the shoreline of an all conquering sea.” It brings together Tom’s interests in surfing and the health of our oceans with his experience of working for a detective agency. This Green Room event serves as the first local launch of ‘The Actaeon Tide’ and brings a writer home. Tom Anderson lives in Porthcawl and is an English teacher in Cardiff. The reading will be followed by questions, opportunities to purchase ‘The Actaeon Tide’, and our ever popular Open Mic readings. Entrance £3. Everyone Invited. More information: Sustainable Wales 01656 783962 www.sustainablewales.org.uk Saturday 31st January

Sport Porthcawl RFC Under 16s squad Sponsor
Porthcawl RFC Under 7s News It is many of the boys first season of playing rugby. They have developed superbly in a very short time. It’s great to see the boys improving as a team each week and being so competitive. Numbers have been excellent and their commitment to training and matches has been great.
Porthcawl RFC is delighted to announce The Print Centre, Porthcawl will continue to be the main kit sponsor for our Under 16s squad. The Print Centre has been established for over 10 years in Cardiff and recently expanded to include new premises in Lias Road, Porthcawl. The sponsorship deal will mean The Print Centre’s logo will take pride of place on the front of the Under 16s match day kit. Under 16s Head Coach and Junior section Chairman, Andrew Richards said: “The whole Club is thrilled by the long standing relationship and support of The Print Centre. I would personally like to thank Mark and Alison Williams for their continued commitment to what is proving to be a successful squad having won The Ospreys Cup last season. “Our sponsorship of the Under 16s is providing us with an excellent opportunity to get our brand out there and attract new business to our newly launched Porthcawl branch and I am delighted that we are maintaining the same level of support this season”, said Mark Williams. “We are a community club and it’s extremely important to us to have the support of local individuals and businesses” said Tracey Williams, Assistant Secretary at Porthcawl RFC. For details on how you can become a sponsor please contact tracey@porthcawlrfc.com
To date they have played against, Cwmavon, Llantwit Fardre, Kenfig Hill, Bridgend Sports, Treorchy, Maesteg Celtic, Bryncethin, Cowbridge and Brecon. Each game has shown big improvement. With a Christmas break, giving the boys a well deserved rest, I am sure in the new year there will be some very excited players ready to work off their Christmas turkey. From the coaches, we hope that all the players have a brilliant Christmas and look forward to getting back into action in January. Geraint Evans
Tap It Out CC Some cold and windy conditions throughout November hasn’t prevent Tap It Out CC turning out in numbers. Some big challenges have been set by individuals in the club for the 2015 season. Richard and Julie Webster are taking on iron man Wales again, there’s a club training camp in March to Majorca with some testing climbs, Lee Smith has being selected for the Onitsports race team, and a number of members are taking on the toughest classic in the Liege Bastogne - held in Belgium – 180 miles and 11 monster climbs! It’s been a fantastic first year with some great rides and some new friendships made, so I’d like to wish everyone good luck for the 2015 season and a Merry Christmas. Club rides are Monday night turbo 19:00hrs, Wednesday night chain gang 19:00hrs from the Tap, and Saturday club ride at 09:00 also from the Tap. Nicky Morgan nickemorgan@hotmail.co.uk
