HEALTH COST OF CANCER NEWS Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all had a fab Christmas too. We managed to raise a whopping £872 from our Light for A Life service. Thank you to everyone who came and supported it meant a lot to us that you showed your support. Thank you also to Jeff, Dave and all at the Hi-Tide. Thank you also to Fr Philip Masson for his beautiful and inspiring words, and last but by no means least thank you to all the volunteers who helped on the night. There’s still time for anyone who’s interested in signing up for our Step up For January challenge and it is a challenge, but I think it’s good to push ourselves. Go to the website to register. We ask that you complete 12,000 steps per day which can be done by running or walking whichever you prefer. I’m going to be running some of mine as I need to get in shape as I’m doing the Euro 3 City Cycle in September. You can sign up for both of these events on our website. www.costofcancer.org.uk. The number of people we are helping has increased, so the more we can raise the better. We don’t want to turn anyone away because we don’t have the funds so please do help us to raise money to help us help others. Finally, please do follow us on all social media platforms and remember we help those who are finding life a struggle financially whilst going through treatment for Cancer. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees

ARE YOU THINKING WHAT I’M THINKING? How many of the 70,000 a day thoughts did you catch? One or two, maybe, then as normal service resumes the mind continues to keeping you alive, noticing hunger, thirst, boredom, excitement, hot, cold, driving, sleeping, waking… You may realise that every other person you meet also has 70,000 thoughts going on in their mind as well, no wonder it is so difficult to function some days! We all deserve more credit for getting up in the morning and making it to bedtime in one piece. It is no surprise to learn that this may be the reason why people we know get on our nerves sometimes or with certain family or friends, all the time. You may ask yourself ‘Why did they do that? Well now you know why, we each have our own 70,000 thoughts, so the person who has upset you is not thinking exactly the same as you. It is not personal. Maybe the next time someone upsets you remember they can’t read your mind or calculate your needs, so either explain what you want or if they choose to ignore you; say ‘You may be right’. Are you able to listen for two minutes to your mind’s chatter? Margaret Brown

EASY WAYS TO LOWER BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS NATURALLY A high fiber diet can improve your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar and minimize blood sugar lows. This could help you better manage type 1 diabetes. Foods that are high in fiber include vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Eating foods rich in chromium and magnesium can help prevent deficiencies and reduce the risk of blood sugar problems. They include dark leafy greens, squash and pumpkin seeds, tuna, whole grains, dark chocolate, bananas, avocados and beans. In fact, several studies suggest that having smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day could improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels. Staying hydrated can reduce blood sugar levels and diabetes risk so choose water and avoid sugar-sweetened beverages. Managing your stress levels through exercise or relaxation methods like yoga may help you regulate blood sugar levels. Good sleep helps and promotes a healthy weight, on the other hand, poor sleep can disrupt critical metabolic hormones. Maintaining a moderate weight will support blood sugar management and decrease your risk of developing diabetes. Be sure to talk with your healthcare professional before making lifestyle changes or trying new supplements especially if you have problems with blood sugar management or are taking medications.
