THE ALDI EFFECT

Dear Editor,

My Jack Russell and I have decided to walk to the allotment and pick our homegrown veg. Then over to Aldi for some continental goodies, whilst finishing at Aldi, I will thank the lord, I am alive and make my peace at Coney Beach. Sauntering over to the Harbour, I may enquire – Has anyone a fish for trade? Then over to my favourite butchers, green grocers, pet shop and bargain shop – all in town. All in walking distance. I will say ‘hello’ to many folk. My smart phone in the pocket, I will use the ‘smile’ as my new found emoji. Fear not residents and business of Porthcawl. I will not abandon you. Although the Germans are coming, I remember your strength in the pandemic. I’ve sold my car, I walk more, I talk more, 12,000 steps a day and my digital wallet looks positive. If your struggling – remember a walk to Aldi a day – keeps the doctor away. But, make sure you detour to town.

ARCTIC BLAST EXPEDITION 2023

Dear Editor,

My name is Phil Jones, or, as I’m probably better know in Porthcawl, Barney.

In March 2023 I will be undertaking an unsupported 100 km trek across the Swedish Arctic. The aim of this walk is to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre.

The route I will be walking is from Abisko, which is a village roughly 250 km inside the Arctic Circle, to Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden, which is situated in Lapland. I will be crossing frozen lakes, skirting ancient glaciers, and passing by villages of the indigenous Sami people. Abisko is considered one of the best places on the planet to experience the Northern Lights, so hopefully I will be able to experience mother nature’s finest light show.

It is possible that I may suffer temperatures of minus 20 or less, on this arduous challenge, but compared to those whose lives have been devastated by this awful disease, I think my suffering and my will be fairly inconsequential.

I know and appreciate how difficult the present economic climate is, but if you can find it in your heart to offer a donation towards this cause, you too will be joining me on this journey and championing a fight against this diseases we collectively call cancer.

You can donate at: https://gofund.me/eab83ea0 Or you can contact me on: m.owen8@sky.com Barney

THANK YOU FROM KIDNEY RESEARCH

Dear Editor, On Saturday 19th November I hosted a Glam & Glitter Ball at the Hi Tide, Porthcawl. I would like to thank everyone that contributed towards raising nearly £1,700 for Porthcawl KRUF. Your generosity was overwhelming and I am so grateful, I hope everyone had a great time. All proceeds will go to the Dialysis Unit at Llantrisant. Thank you once again. Julie Warren, Porthcawl

THANK YOU FROM LADIES OF GILGAL

Dear Editor, Many thanks to the knitters, sew-ers, shoppers, cuddly toy providers and packers, who helped us to send over 280 boxes for the Samaritans Purse Christmas Appeal. Your generosity and help are much appreciated. Blessings in the New Year, Ladies of Gilgal

Dear Editor, Porthcawl is blessed with some fantastic spaces, many of which are sea-facing. One such space is the sea front along the Esplanade, overlooking The Town Beach. This area situated between the newly renovated (and very nice) Eastern Promenade, to The Seabank Hotel is blighted by a very busy road running through it. This road degrades the sea view, causes access problems for able and less-able visitors, and cuts off the existing Food & Beverage offers from the sea. But it doesn’t have to be this way...

By permanently closing the Esplanade Road between the new Cosy Corner development (which I am sure will be very nice) and The Grand Pavilion (which if renovated will also be very nice), as happens now during Elvis Week, that area of the sea front would be enhanced, creating a significant quality space for recreation and relaxation with no dangerous traffic, no vehicle noise, and no exhaust fumes.

With some legislative changes and a reasonable capital budget, the creation of a vehicle free space right on the sea front would add significant benefits to the town, whilst supporting the redevelopment of The Grand Pavilion and Cosy Corner.

David Norris, Porthcawl

NEW BOOKS AT PORTHCAWL LIBRARY

FICTION

NON FICTION

BOOK OF THE MONTH

I Bought a Mountain by Thomas Firbank

Written on the eve of the Second World War, this memoir tells the remarkable story of how 21-year-old Thomas Firbank decided on impulse to purchase a 2,400-acre hill farm in the rugged, inhospitable mountains of Snowdonia, and how he and his wife struggled to build it back into prosperity.

The book became an international bestseller, selling over half-amillion copies worldwide and pioneered the genre of ‘good life’ rural escape literature.

I Bought a Mountain is a thrilling human tale of tragedy and triumph, as well as a portrait of a lost era when farming was a communal endeavour, offering precious insights into conservation and sustainability relevant for today.

CÔR BRO OGWR’S CHRISTMAS CONCERT

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

Côr Bro Ogwr’s Christmas concert was held at All Saints Church, Porthcawl on Saturday, 10th December. On a very seasonal evening the church rang out with Christmas music including John Rutter’s Angels’ Carol, Carol y Seren by Gareth Glyn, and a beautiful Christmas cantata by Cecilia McDowall, Christmas Natus Est which incorporated traditional songs: Personent Hodie, Gaudete, Infant Holy, Infant Lowly and Angelus ad Virginem. The audience also had the opportunity to join in with favourite carols and were in fine voice, de-spite the cold! The choir was under the expert baton of its Musical Director, Ben Pinnow, and was accompanied by Benjamin Teague on the organ and Angharad Edwards on harp

We are eager to recruit new singers at any time - all voices and all ages. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings, 7.00 - 9.00 pm, in Tabernacle Church, Derwen Road, Bridgend. Practice for our spring concert starts on Wednesday, 4th January. Please come and join us; no auditions required!

CUBS ART BADGE

Local cubs visited Porthcawl Art Society gallery in John Street, admiring the local art on display and having a go at their own Christmas cards and Christingles, which were fantastic! Thanks to all members who helped make this such an enjoyable evening. The gallery in John Street is open 11-3pm with free entry to enjoy the artworks. We are open to new members, including beginners, if you wish to join this friendly group. Member workshops are on Wednesdays 1-3pm and 7-9pm starting from 1st March 2023.

Tricia Simon (Secretary) www.porthcawlart.co.uk Facebook/PorthcawlArt

Hope you all had a great Xmas. I must say I was really disappointed at our town Porthcawl yet again: there was no official turning on of the Xmas lights. They had a Victorian theme, which was good throughout the day, and then it was like a ghost town at 4pm. The kids want to see Santa coming through, with a countdown at the bandstand in John Street. About four years ago there must have been two thousand people there, where they did it with Bridge FM, a stage and live music. It really is sad for this town. On the music front, it’s all roads leading to Trecco Bay on 3rd to 5th February 2023 (Friday to Sunday) for Planet Rock’s Winter’s End Festival. Many of the country’s top rock bands will be there and Porthcawl/Bridgend’s own next big thing, “Last Flight To Pluto”, are on the main stage on Saturday 6th, so get your tickets now as the Planet Rock Festivals tend to sell out very fast! Keep your music news coming and I’ll give you a plug.

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

At this time of year, we often think of settling down in the long dark evenings to watch a nice film, and the Christmas season should always be good for a few classics. This often prompts me to ask myself, what really makes a classic film? After all, we each have our own individual likes and dislikes – some people like myself prefer old films, others only enjoy contemporary productions.

Regular readers of this column probably know that I have a liking for British films, especially those of the 1940s and 1950s, but

this month I would like to pay my respects to that fine American actor, James Stewart. There is something about the characters he plays that makes him compulsively watchable. I saw him in “It’s A Wonderful Life” recently, and it was so hard to convince myself that he was only acting. But more incredible still was his role in “No Highway In The Sky” (1951), playing eccentric scientist Theodore Honey investigating metal fatigue in a new British airliner at Farnborough. If you want to watch a true master at work, look for it on YouTube, and you will be rewarded with Marlene Dietrich as well.

CONSEQUENCES

Time slowly fades, As each day is made. All of us admire the sun, But we’ve become blind to the damage we’ve done.

It all started here in Britain, In the crucible of the Industrial Revolution. We blew carbon into the sky, And watched as the plants died.

Heatstroke, sunburns, fire, It’s all treated as a satire! It’s all a joke, not really serious, Wrong! They’re all delirious!

Bears and penguins die in heat, While politicians take their seat. An action must be made, and fast, For the world will not last.

What ice will there be to find? What snow to cool the mind? How can we grow any corn? In this dreadful storm.

Carbon emissions are too much, Do we really want to drown the Dutch? There is no ‘Planet B’, To save the world, that’s up to you and me.

I’m reaching out, Can you take my hand? Things don’t always go The way they’re planned.

Your life should be fun And not like this.

Let me take your pain And leave you bliss.

It won’t take long As I know you well, I will keep you safe From the gates of Hell.

You just need to believe That I’m your best friend, Have faith in my magic, Angel Power has no end… Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

FAIRY LIGHTS IN SOME SLEEPY HOLLOWS

Coloured lights flicker along the eves and apple trees

Among some sleepy woody hollows. Roman candles glimmer in windows And all is still among the trees

Upon a cold mid-winter’s eve. Sparrow, blue tit and starling twitter at fat ball and seed, Up in the crinkled, golden beech, Swaying from rosehips, Swooping and fighting for cold crumbs. Morning skies are red, gold and glorious, Shepherd’s warning? Of a sleeping plague that steals upon the innocent fold

Like the nightmare wolf? Or a gathering storm? Holy Spirit of Christmas, Cradle of New Hope, On this peaceful, silent night, Where fairy lights shine Among some sleepy hollows, Restore us to health, Lull us gently back to Happiness In the deep mid-winter. Sally Richards, Porthcawl

THREE SCORE YEARS AND TEN

Those threescore years and ten They won’t come round again. I’ll store them in my memory box, To look at now and then. Those cards with birthday wishes, The helium balloons, Those little voices singing ‘Happy Birthday’ tunes. Then there was my family, Bearing gifts and loving words. Memories of years gone by Within my mind were stirred. A birthday like no other, A perfect work of art.

That special day stays with me, Gift-wrapped in my heart.

Judy Dee, Porthcawl

THE WINTER OF DISCONTENT

What has happened to our country? Our lives are in disarray.

Vital services taken for granted Are being gradually stripped away. Money may be the root of all evil But why blame people striking for more, When the cost of living is rising, Wages don’t cover what they used to before.

Food and warmth were once a priority, Now most can’t afford the cost.

The basics of life now a luxury

At a time when they are needed the most. Doctors and dentists were everyone’s lifeline

But now for the wealthy not the poor. Sadly old age and ill health bring problems, It’s a desperate plight that’s for sure.

Royal Mail, British Rail, NHS and firemen!! It’s no wonder they want to give vent. But where does this end, is this progress, Or ‘the winter of our discontent’?

We find money, to give to others, Some much needed in far, foreign climes. Our fundamental structures are broken, ‘Charity begins at home’ at such times. Catherine Millard Payne, Bridgend

COST OF CANCER

Happy New Year everyone, we trust you all had a great Christmas too. Hope it was spent with family and friends. Thank you to everyone who came to our Light for A Life event at the Hi-Tide, I was really bad with the flu and unable to attend. Thank you to everyone who helped out in my place. Thank you to the DWP Bridgend, who have recently donated £332.99 to us after all the staff did some fundraising recently. We are hoping to put some more events on this year. We have our Step up For January where you do 12,000 each day throughout the month of January, details can be found on our website. Hopefully we can put on another acoustic night in Cowbridge with the band Omega Blend playing for us again, it was a really successful night. Nights like this helps us to keep helping others.

For those of you who don’t know, we help families of those who are going through treatment for cancer. We help with the bills that arrive on the door mat every month regardless of what the occupants are going through. Bills like gas, electric, water etc. So, if your family is affected or you know someone is affected you know what to do, get in touch with us. We offer families total discretion and privacy.

CONGRATULATIONS

Well done, you have made it to another New Year and fitted in all those people events shopping, worship and entertainment before Christmas.

What did you enjoy? What wasn’t so good? What happens next time? Well, that’s up to you, you can repeat the same Christmas this year or you can change it. Though be warned your friends and family may not be so keen on change, “since this is the way we have always done it.”

As Portia Wilson explains, “Chapter One of My Life, I walk down the street. There’s a deep hole in the pavement. I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless. It’s not my fault. I take forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two, I walk down the same street. There’s a deep hole in the pavement. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again. It isn’t my fault, but it still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three I walk down the same street. There’s a deep hole in the pavement. I see it there and I still fall in! It’s a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It’s my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter Four, I walk down the same street. There’s a deep hole in the pavement. I walk around it.

Chapter Five, I walk down a different street.”

UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF SODIUM AND POTASSIUM IN THE BODY

Sodium and potassium play an important role in your overall health. “Potassium and sodium are electrolytes that work together in your body by maintaining fluid and blood volume, but they have opposite effects,” said Amy Fox, certified nutritionist and certified functional food professional who runs the Food and Mood website. “Consuming too little potassium and too much sodium can raise your blood pressure and potentially cause long-term heart problems.” Sodium helps to balance our bodily fluids and regulate our blood pressure, and plays a crucial role in normal nerve and muscle function, transmitting nerve impulses between the brain and the body and allow muscles to contract, Dina Totosegis, registered dietitian and founder of Sprouting Foodies, explained. Potassium holds similar roles in the body as sodium such as maintaining water balance, sending nerve impulses, and contracting muscles, however it works to counter the effects of sodium in the body. One possible explanation for high sodium intake and adverse effects on cognitive decline may be related to the endothelial cells inside the brain, Fox explained. These are the primary type of cell found in the inside lining of blood vessels and help regulate blood flow to the brain and interact with the surrounding brain tissue. A high dietary intake of salt has been associated with the dysfunction of these cells. Endothelial dysfunction may play a role in brain-related diseases, specifically cerebral small vessel disease, one of the leading causes of dementia, Fox added. Some early studies have also shown that high sodium levels may cause a chemical change to a protein called tau. This change can cause tau to clump together. This type of clumping is being investigated as a potential link to with some dementias, including Alzheimer’s disease. Potassium is an electrolyte that helps to optimize brain function. Tips to reduce sodium in your diet.

Use fresh rather than packaged foods. Fresh foods usually have much less sodium added during processing. Boost your intake of fruit and vegetables, which are naturally low in sodium.

Canned and frozen fruits can be low in sodium too, but choose options that have “No Salt Added,” or “Fresh Frozen,” and do not contain added seasoning or sauces.

Read the Nutrition Facts label to check the daily value amounts. Choose products with 5% Daily Value (DV) or less, Fox explained. Stay away from 20% Daily Value (DV) or higher. Also, compare brands. You’d be surprised how much sodium content can vary brand to brand.

It’s a common practice for companies to inject saltwater solutions into their poultry for tastier, juicier meat. Inspect the label to ensure it hasn’t been injected with a sodium solution, Fox said.

Sodium levels in unseasoned fresh meats are around 100 milligrams (mg) or less per 4-ounce serving.

Condiments are high in sodium. Fox recommended limiting the use of condiments or buying reduced- or lower-sodium versions. Prepare home-cooked meals from scratch as much as possible to help limit the sodium content of processed or fast foods.

Season with herbs and spices to add flavor while limiting table salt.

GETTING OUT AND ABOUT FOR 2023

If your New Year resolutions include getting out and about for more exercise, you won’t have to travel far to discover the stunning parks and areas of natural beauty that are on your doorstep.

Frog Pond Wood, a wonderful local nature reserve based near the Village Farm Industrial Estate in Pyle, was recently extended to include an unused plot that, over the course of 30 years, has developed naturally to become a mixed woodland of oak and ash. This organic process has given the land significant ecological value, and it is perfect for short walks and more. Meanwhile, the Nature Keeper project has introduced interactive oak statues to beauty spots all around the county borough, each with a story to tell. You can search for them at Wilderness Lake in Porthcawl, Tremains Wood Local Nature Reserve, Parc Calon Lan, Bryngarw Country Park, Aber Fields in the Ogmore Valley and Bedford Park in Cefn Cribwr.

If your New Year resolutions involve hitting the gym more frequently, why not see what Halo Leisure can offer? As the council’s official leisure partners, Halo manage eight different facilities on the authority’s behalf, including swimming pools, gyms and sports centres. COST-OF-LIVING SUPPORT AVAILABLE

RESIDENTS

CALL FOR ACTION TO STOP SPEEDING

I have contacted police about complaints I am getting from residents in South Road, Porthcawl. They are worried about speeding traffic along the dual carriageway that runs parallel to their street from the Nottage roundabout up to The Port way. Residents complain of traffic travelling at speeds far in excess of the 50mph speed limit in force on this road. Apart from the dangers involved, residents are also subjected to high levels of traffic noise as a result. Air pollution is also increased from the exhaust fumes especially if the vehicles have been “souped up”.

I have written to Chief Supt Stephen Jones asking him for details of the results from speed checks that police have already carried out on this road. I will also be contacting BCBC’s highways department.

Some solutions to the problem spring to mind including traffic calming to slow vehicles down as well as more frequent visits from the camera speeding vans.

I have also asked Ch Supt Jones if he will send a representative to a meeting to discuss this problem. Once I have had all the responses, I will decide what further action needs to be taken.

The cost-of-living crisis continues to impact many. For some, it may be about being extra careful with budgets, for others, it is about whether they put food on the table. Christmas can add to this financial strain. Trussell Trust figures show 1/5 referrals to centres are from working households. Working families are struggling to cover basic costs of living. At the same time, UK Government has made changes to universal credit leaving three-quarters of households worse off than the year before. Welsh Government continues to do what it can to support people during this crisis. The Winter Fuel Support Scheme has been extended to support more than 400,000 low-income homes, provided £150 payments for those in Council Tax bands A-D, the Council Tax Reduction Scheme, as well as £1m funding for Warm Hubs.

My plea to our community is that we access all support available. There is often shame associated with reaching out, which is why it’s heartening to see how our community has responded to this crisis, setting up Warm Hubs, Community Pantries and other support groups. If you are struggling, there is support available. You can also email me, and I can do what I can to help.

NEW HOUSES NEEDED IN VALLEYS NOT PORTHCAWL

HEARINGS are taking place soon with the planning inspector appointed to examine the objections to the replacement Local Development Plan.

My main concern when this was being drawn up was the proposal to build 1100 homes in Porthcawl – on Sandy Bay and Salt Lake. The opposition to this plan was led by Porthcawl Civic Trust, which submitted detailed objections.

I shared their fears that boosting the population of Porthcawl by up to 4,000 people would have drastic implications for all public services including health. The Porthcawl Health Centre is already struggling to cope with demand before a single extra home has been built.

But there is another important issue. The LDP concentrates 80 per cent of all future house building south of the M4. This leaves just 20 per cent of new homes to be provided in the communities to the north.

This is not a good for anyone. The valley areas will be denuded of the young families they need to keep their communities vibrant. People will be driven away from their home areas by a lack of suitable housing. This exodus of younger people in particular will impact the viability of shops, pubs and other businesses in their home communities.

PORTHCAWL MAYOR’S MESSAGE

I hope that you have all had a very good Christmas and a Happy New Year.

In the first instance I would very much like to thank all those members of the Community who attended the Porthcawl Town Council Christmas Switch On at Griffin Park. This was the first of its kind for many years and we know that there were one or two hiccups that need to be addressed for next year. However, it is a start and was generally well received and many people have shown their appreciation for the lights especially the Christmas Tree! Christmas lights are never easy and the Town Council want to achieve the most attractive display alongside best value and within a limited budget for the Town. There is also the added complication of ensuring that the infrastructure can accommodate decorative lighting.

Council takes on board concerns about the roundabouts and provision of lights in the peripheries of Porthcawl to include Newton and Nottage. It is the ambition of the Council to try to improve upon what has been achieved this year however as a Council we must always be mindful of our budget.

Another positive for this year has been the Warm Spaces project at Griffin Park which has been achieved by working with the Porthcawl Community Support Group .

Finally, the Town Council have agreed this year to introduce the People’s Budget as part of their precept. This will give residents, a meaningful choice of how a proportion of the Council’s budget is spent whilst also gaining the positive effect of a well engaged community. Further details to follow, so please keep an eye on the Town Council Website and in the Seaside News regarding this.

Fingers crossed for a positive 2023.

BRYNTEG SCHOOL NEWS

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

In the ‘run up’ to Christmas, Brynteg School have been busy with their fundraising ideas for the Santa Appeal. Historically Brynteg have fundraised for this cause for many years and always with the aim to raise as much money as possible to purchase presents for vulnerable children and young people in Bridgend. Brynteg supporters have raised £1,665 this year and on 5th December Brynteg pupils visited BCBC Children’s Services. The funds will be used to purchase and distribute gifts to children currently in care. Thank you to all our supporters for helping us with another successful fundraiser. In other news our annual Carol Service was held in St Mary, Nolton Church, Bridgend, on 20th December. This was an opportunity for us, as a school community, to come together. The evening provided entertainment, showcasing our talented pupils. It was a musical treat with performances from pupils across all year groups and abilities performing Christmas songs and music. The pupils who took part were a credit to the school.

ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

St Clare’s is a beautiful school both inside and out; it has an old soul but refuses to stand still. St Clare’s provides an exceptional education from Nursery to Sixth Form, combining academic excellence with unrivalled pastoral-care and a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme.

Happy new year to you all and I am delighted to welcome Mr Michael Stephens who has taken over from me as Head Teacher from 1st January 2023. I have written this during my last week in office and I hand over the reigns, this final article is really from us both and I wish him the very best of luck at the wonderful Porthcawl Comprehensive School. We had a very busy end to the term with lots of transition events over several weeks, the Winter Games and Year 7 Drama Club’s production of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. The standout highlight was being able to host our traditional Carol Service once again at All Saint’s Church at the centre of the community, where it belongs. Recent years have seen the pupils participating in a more ‘virtual’ event, but for the first time since 2019, we were able to welcome parents, carers and members of the community to the church to celebrate with us. The music once again was outstanding and special thanks to Mrs Giles, Mrs Smith and all the staff involved in contributing to a wonderful evening.

Rehearsals at school for ‘Footloose’ are now at full throttle, and performances are 25th -28th January at The Grand Pavilion –01656 815995/ awenboxoffice.com/grand-pavilion-porthcawl See you there! Andrew

NEWYDDION SGÊR

We have had an extremely busy half term with lots of visits and activities!

In November we managed to hold an afternoon of rugby and netball matches with Newton Primary. It was wonderful to be able to play after such a long period of time. Diolch to Newton Primary for visiting us.

Our Key stage pupils were fortunate to visit Neuadd Gwyn and watch a Welsh panto “Y Bachgen Bach Gwyrdd” by Cwmni Mega. The show was held at Nant Gwyn Hall in Neath and all pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Ffalala visited the Foundation Phase to hold a day of musical workshops. There was plenty of dancing, singing, acting and ribbons to be seen!

It was wonderful to be able to perform Christmas Concerts for our parents, families and friends for the first time since 2019. The Foundation Phase held the concerts at school, whilst Key Stage 2 performed a traditional Carol Service at Pisgah Chapel. A big “Diolch” also to Ysgol Afon-y-Felin who have visited us to participate in a Reading Buddies session. We are looking forward to visiting in the New Year to practise our skills further.

NEWS FROM PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB

PORTHCAWL NCI REPORT

So, the Christmas and New Year festivities are over and we are now into 2023. Last year was, once again, a busy one for our station with plenty of incidents involving a wide range of activities, craft and people. Many of these incidents have had involvement from other Search and Rescue (SAR) organisations such as HM Coast Guard, RNLI, Coastguard Rescue Teams, Rescue Helicopter, Lifeguards and the police. As an NCI station, over the previous year, we have experienced a closer working relationship with these organisations, particularly the local police, who have asked for our support on a number of occasions.

Happy New Year to all our supporters.

Starting off we had Andrew Collier who spoke about American Presidents of the 20th century, very interesting and informative. Then there was Kerry Marlowe, we give us insight into the background of criminal investigation, again very interesting. Kerry is a highly regarded individual; who has done many voluntary roles in the community and there is nothing he would not do to help or support others.

The Red Kites followed, formerly the Yardies, who have entertained us on many occasions, including our Christmas lunch at the Grove Golf Club. What a joyous time we have. We love their music and sing along. Then came Chris King who entertained us with songs from the West End shows and popular hits, an awesome voice, very talented young man.

Also, ten members were given tickets to attend the Annual Flower Club Open evening “Christmas is coming” Presented by Chelsea Gold Medalist Delyth Price. Delyth’s fabulous arrangements were inspirational! Stunning! So creative, a very hard-working person who gave tips on easy ways to flower arranging. Porthcawl Stroke Club would like to thank Maureen Fargie, Eunice Howell and committee from the Porthcawl Floral society.

Barbara Matthews

NEWTON WI

Our meeting this month was a little later than usual due to unforeseen circumstances. The Festival of Christmas Trees at All Saints Church was spectacular again this year. We thank our craft ladies for all their hard work in preparing and assembling Newton WI Tree.

The concert for ‘LATCH’ on December 1st. was a great success, thank you to all who came to support us. Special thanks to the children and their teachers, the singing was amazing. A cheque for the total amount raised will be presented to Sandra Owen of ‘LATCH’ in our January meeting. A happy and healthy New Year to all.

M Freeman

We would like to thank all our supporters over the last year for buying books, giving donations in our boxes, plus the support we have received from Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club. As a charitable organisation, we rely solely on donations for the continued running of the NCI station in Porthcawl and all your help is very much appreciated.

Our trainee watchkeepers are currently in the middle of their training, learning the ropes in the tower with a Mentor and another watchkeeper. Hopefully, they will all successfully pass their assessment in the spring ready for another busy summer season.

Laurence

Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

ROTARY ROUNDUP

Porthcawl Rotary was pleased to carry our fund-raising activities leading up to Christmas.

The Rotary Postal Service was a great success with thousands of cards delivered to local addresses by Rotarian posties.

The Christmas Tree Festival went ahead at All Saints Church and was well attended by local people and visitors from further afield. The display of Christmas trees decorated by local schools and organisations in Porthcawl was a marvel to see.

The Young musician competition was also held in the All-Saints Church, which turned out to be very successful with many young contestants taking part. The worthy winner was Lara Omidvar.

The Carolcade went ahead with a new sleigh, much to the excitement of local children who saw the decorated sleigh pass along their streets with Christmas music playing and Santa and Mrs. Christmas checking up on their gift requests.

The sleigh was also on display at the Christmas John Street collection, which was well supported by people shopping in the town.

Rotary would like to thank everyone who attended and supported our activities with such generosity and wish everybody a Happy New Year.

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

BUILDING SCHOOLS IN ZAMBIA

When Broadlands resident, Deana Owen retired after many years as a health visitor in 2012 she thought she would retrace her steps to Monze in the Southern Provence of Zambia where she had worked as a young nurse. The poverty and need she saw moved her deeply and before long she had set up the charity Friends of Monze to raise funds to build a school. Now 10 years later, thanks to Deana’s exhaustive work and the generosity of people in Wales together with strong ties with a partner organisation in Monze, 12 schools have already been built. Everything Friends of Monze does is sustainable from using solar power, organic fertilisers and indigenous seeds to planting fruit trees in the school gardens. The pandemic Deana couldn’t visit Monze for 3 years, but this summer for 6 weeks, and although there was much to celebrate reading standards are low so Deana is now determined to raise money so that all our schools will benefit from having a reading scheme.

If you would like a presentation or craft stall at your organisation phone Deana 07807660543 or email deana. owen@friendsofmonze.org

Our picture shows three wise men, after all it is Epiphany we look more like ‘The last of the Summer Wine’. Although our priority is to get tools out to Africa we get involved in other activities, so the photograph shows our tree on display at the Rotary Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church. The ornaments on the tree are tools and the angel a ‘toolie with wings’ made by Mark James our Chairman. The workshop gets involved in activities outside our remit repairing chairs for a residential home, erecting Christmas Crib cameos around town, renovating small l items and repairing some sculptures, decorating street and community furniture. We have helped people out with smaller engineering requirements, prepared equipment for the Woodland Trust, the Butterfly conservationists and the disabled allotments group. Much of our work involves clearing garages and sheds in order to secure the tools we require for our projects, a great help to those whose family life has changed due to a variety of circumstances .Re use, repair and recycle is a bi-product of what we do. GUILD NEWS

A very happy and healthy new year to you all! As I write this we are looking forward to a splendid Christmas lunch at the Grove Golf Club. We have taken part in the Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church and many members enjoyed the Swansea Federation Carol Service when our chairman Helen did a reading. Our meeting this month is on Wednesday January 11th 2pm at the Grove Golf Club when Ceri Joseph will be our guest speaker on famous Welsh Women. Do make a resolution to visit us this year. You will be sure of a good afternoon with Ceri and will be most welcome!

We finished this year with a very full calendar, as well as our monthly meetings we’ve learned about the origins and the reasons behind some of our Christmas Customs, such as why we exchange gifts, decorate our trees and why we eat mince pies at Christmas.

Our writing group presented a programme of their own Christmas Readings, there were twenty in all, very varied and interesting, their hard work was very much appreciated, as was the buffet lunch. We also enjoyed a Christmas lunch; both these events were held at the Hi Tide.

A trip to the New Theatre to see a performance of ‘The Lavender Hill Mob’ with either lunch or ‘retail therapy’ beforehand heralded the return of the last of our groups to get up and running and was very well received by our members. Their second venture is ‘Best Marigold Hotel” next March.

Lots of our groups held their own Christmas celebrations throughout December.

We look forward to starting the New Year with a full programme of our interest groups and monthly Talks Programme at the Hi Tide with our monthly visits restarting in the spring.

PIRACY AND POLICE TAKE CENTRE STAGE

The Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl was overrun by a boisterous band of pirates, police officers and fair maidens when the Mid Glamorgan Savoyards (MGS) staged a charity performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance at the end of November.

It was wonderful to see this lively group fill the pavilion stage once again after a pandemic-induced absence and I thoroughly enjoyed this tuneful and animated production. I’ve been wowed by the quality of the lead characters in past MGS shows, and this time was no exception. Together with a very tuneful chorus, full orchestra and pit chorus, the group put on a show that lived up to its usual high standards. The police brigade with their memorable ‘tarantara’ refrain and comic routine were a source of great mirth, as were the swashbuckling maneuvers of the fearsome - yet kindly – pirates. The melodious tones of the Major General’s dancing ‘daughters’ provided the perfect foil to the male voices. A policeman’s lot may not be a happy one, as G&S’s song maintains, but the audience left smiling and humming after this high-spirited show.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES

Happy New Year everyone! Hoping that you have had a good Christmas.

The word happy is such a ‘feel good’ word. Just the sound of it brings a positive feeling, even good memories. However, Jesus tells us how true and long-lasting happiness comes and it might not be what you have thought about. A couple of examples from the famous, Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 – 7), Jesus says, “blessed are those who are poor in spirit…blessed are those who mourn…blessed are those who are gentle.” The word blessed actually means: happy, fortunate, spiritually prosperous, content. Now, to be poor in spirit or one who mourns basically means: to acknowledge our need for God’s help and forgiveness because of our own human brokenness, limitations, and mistakes. Jesus is telling us, if we admit our humanity (which I’m sure we all understand), and turn to God for help, God will come and bless us, lift burdens off us, give us peace, happiness, and joy. So, although I wish you a Happy New Year, this year, and wish you every blessing – my true heart for you would be to know the happiness that only God can bring into your life, through your acknowledgement of your need for him.

SKER WI

It was lovely to see so many members attend the Christmas meeting on the 8th of December. Members enjoyed a Fish and Chip Supper and a sing along with the music played by the Red Kites. The Christmas Fair had been a great success and members were thanked for their support and help in manning the stalls. We were reminded about the Christmas tree festival at All Saints Church supported by many of the town’s organisations including your own WI.

The next meeting is on Thursday, January 12th, when Mr John Hanson will speak on ‘Tools of Reliance’. Visitors are always welcome. Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy 2023.

HISTORY

THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD: GENE TIERNEY

Born on 19 November 1920 in Brooklyn to a wealthy insurance broker and a socialite mother, Gene Tierney enjoyed a privileged upbringing, which opened doors in Hollywood. A successful movie career followed. However, Gene’s story is really about how she fought depression and a debilitating mental illness. Stressed through a failing marriage, a sick daughter and overwork, Gene fell ill. Later, she wrote about her illness with great insight. “As long as I was playing someone else, everything was fine. It was when I had to be myself that the problems began.”

Gene entered a sanatorium where she received primitive treatment, followed by a spell in a clinic where the therapy was more enlightened. She wrote, “If you break an arm or a leg it takes months for it to really heal, and years for it to be the same again. So you can imagine the problems with a broken mind.”

And, “More than anything, I learned that the mind is the most beautiful part of the body and I am grateful to have mine back.”

Must see Gene Tierney movie: Laura, regarded as one of the greatest mystery movies of all time.

NOTTAGE TUNNEL

In 1847 the Llynfi Valley Railway acquired the Duffryn Llynfi and Porthcawl Railway with the intention of converting it to modern standards and to divert its route. Eventually it would result in the installation of Brunel’s broad-gauge track (7’¼”) and the laying of track through Nottage; thus, diverting the original tram route which had passed through the gardens of Nottage Court. The Act authorising these intentions was not officially authorised until 1855 because landowners Lady Charlotte Guest and Rev. Henry Hey Knight forbade “any locomotive engine or other moving power other than animal power…. without their consent.” (D.P.L.R. by Brynmor James) Although, the official opening of the new LVR broad-gauge line

took place on 22nd August 1861, it was not before Rev. Knight insisted on a tunnel be built under Nottage to protect houses being damaged by smoke and sparks from the steam engines. Thus the 63 ft long Nottage tunnel was constructed through solid rock and remained part of the line until February 1965 when all traffic ceased on the Porthcawl Branch Line. Interestingly, prior to construction there are references to an ancient burial site being unearthed. Rev Knight, also an antiquarian, mentions such in his paper ‘Account of Newton Nottage published in 1853.

2023 – A YEAR TO RECOVER OR A YEAR TO REGRET?

Whatever the answer to this question turns out to be, for sure it could be challenging in many ways. With fuel prices running way up high, especially due to the cold December we’ve just endured and food prices having gone the same way, the financial difficulties are probably the most difficult we’ve faced in at least the last 30-40 years.

The Bank of England raising the base rate once again to 3.5% (the Bank was expected to raise it to 3.75%) would seem on one hand to be yet another step too far, yet following America’s lead by going lower, and given that it is yet early days, inflation at the same time has just dropped to 10.1% from in excess of 11%, with car fuel markedly down in price. So, does this decrease in inflation and the slowing of base rate increase, suggest that we have seen the worst of the turmoil? I think that could well be the case.

What I would prefer to see before making final judgement however, is the first couple of months in 2023 seeing a continuation of this trend and with spending on consumer goods likely to be somewhat lower, that often leads into a lowering of inflation as prices drop, with the public focussing more on meeting its’ regular bills.

These will include increasing mortgage interest payments for many, a likely increase in Council Tax payments and the continuing cost of gas and electricity for heating & other domestic uses. Businesses likewise, will face similar issues as these latter costs have a huge influence on viability to operate, not to mention staff wages, the big talking point and bone of contention during December, with worker strikes in many sectors plentiful.

So, yes it will continue to be challenging, perhaps at a level many have not previously experienced during their lifetime, however by bringing inflation down and hence under some level of control, the future will see a recovery, albeit a much slower one than in previous times and we have to grit our teeth and keep focussed on straightening the finances.

For those of you facing financial issues in this New Year, perhaps a hike in your mortgage payments, please just talk to us and we are available to offer guidance and assistance. Call us on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308. Whilst we cannot guarantee what results we may achieve for you, at least we can point you in the right direction. Have a Happy New Year!

CHANGES TO HOW YOU DIVORCE

On 6 April this year The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 reformed the legal requirements and process for divorce. The new laws will mean that instead of having to attribute blame to one party, a couple can mutually cite ‘irretrievable breakdown’ as the sole ground for wanting to obtain a divorce, or ‘No-Fault’ divorce as many refer to it. This can be done in a joint statement or by an individual.

The act aims to reduce the potential for conflict amongst divorcing couples by:

- removing the ability to make allegations about the conduct of a spouse

- allowing couples to end their marriage jointly

The divorce application can be made online, meaning the postal delays can be avoided. The new digital service was launched in April 2022. There will be no requirement for the respondent to defend or to cross apply for a divorce which should benefit people who were victims of domestic abuse and controlling behaviour from being trapped by their abusive spouses who could delay or contest the petition previously it entirely. The new changes will also stop one partner contesting the divorce, dissolution or separation if the other wants one. This could help victims of domestic abuse as previously their abusers were able to exercise coercive control over them by stopping it. Though it’s worth pointing out that under the new law, divorce can still be challenged on the basis of jurisdiction, the legal validity of the marriage, fraud or coercion and procedural compliance.

The act also introduces a minimum period of 20 weeks between the start of proceedings and application for final order. This provides couples with a meaningful period of reflection and the chance to reconsider. Where divorce is inevitable, it enables couples to cooperate and plan for the future, but arguable some couples feel this delays the process somewhat.

A change in divorce law has been long-awaited by many lawyers who consider the current laws to be outdated, and often increased animosity and acrimony in already difficult circumstances. It is unfair that a couple is forced to stay together even if they have tried to make their marriage work but have been unsuccessful. Despite the landmark change to English and Welsh divorce law, the law in respect of financial provision on divorce will remain the same.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A SEPARATION

For family lawyers, the New Year is a busy time with more people seeking advice on issues arising from the breakdown of their relationship. It may be that a couple has decided to remain together for one last Christmas for the sake of the children, only to find that the plan hasn’t worked out. Or it may be an individual who, having separated from their partner some time previously, wants to deal with matters in the New Year, as part of a resolution to get their affairs in order. There is never an ideal time to broach the subject of separating from your partner, but if you have called an end to your relationship, there are a number of things that you can do in preparation for your first appointment with a solicitor. Firstly, gather together your bank statements and credit card bills, obtain an up to date mortgage redemption statement and ask an estate agent to assess the value of your house. On a practical note, you should obtain details of your eligibility for tax credits and child benefit. The Child Maintenance Service has a helpful online assessment tool to help you work out how much you will receive or pay for your children. This information will give you an idea of the income you are likely to have from all sources and then you can work out your budget going forward. Then you could consider whether you want to attempt mediation in trying to work out arrangements for the children or to settle finances. Mediation is a sensible way to try and resolve these issues without resorting to the court. The above will stand you in better stead when you first see your lawyer and will enable your lawyer to progress your case more quickly.

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

January is the darkest month and reliably unreliable! Snow, frost, wind, rain and cold. Never mind the days are getting longer (that doesn’t really help does it!) The author Josephine Nuese once said “anyone who thinks that gardening starts in the Spring and ends in Autumn is missing the best bit of the year - for gardening starts in January with the dream!” Isn’t that lovely. Buy seed potatoes this month, the early bird catches the worm and the early shopper catches the best range of potatoes varieties with so many to choose, love it! If you are lucky enough (or clever enough) to have cauliflowers growing in your plot, bend the leaves over them, this protects the curds which when exposed to long periods of light will turn green developing flower buds, making them inedible. Beware! Moles start to mate this month, digging more tunnels, more molehills, hopefully not on your lawn. After mating the male leaves immediately leaving the female to tend her pregnancy and look after the young. Huh, I’m saying nothing! Natural odours is an excellent way to get rid of them, bloodmeal and bonemeal do the trick and they break down into nitrogen your plants will love!

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY

We enjoyed our last meeting in December with a practice night making Christmas hanging decorations. The festive theme included mince pies and drinks to round off the evening. We also thanked Maureen for her many years teaching us the basics of flower arranging. Carol will be taking over as our tutor in future meetings.

We have a full and varied programme for 2023 with 3 demonstrations, 6 practice evenings, a talk by the head nurseryman at Bute park and a club competition all before July. All our meetings will be held at Gilgal hall on the second and fourth Wednesday evenings of the month at 7 for 7.30 start. Visitors and members are always welcome and can enrol at any time. We plan to arrange some excursions and social events and have a Facebook page and WhatsApp group for more information.

Our first meeting in January is on 25th and will be a Practice evening making a Parallel Winter Wonderland.

Happy New Year from all our members, Alison Thomas Club Secretary (01656 222985)

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

January is the coldest month of the year, the middle of Winter and there are very few jobs recommended to be done. However, you can check the tubers and plants over wintering in the greenhouse, keep feeding our feathered friends, make sure they have ice free water too. Don’t forget to check your ponds for ice. Those beautiful seed catalogues are there to be browsed, time to choose and plan what you are going to grow in the new season. Those glossy colourful photographs are so tempting!

We at Laleston Gardening Club have reflected on the previous very busy year. 2022 has been an extremely successful one for our Club and with our membership now exceeding 250 members we look forward to another great year packed with social events, trips, interesting lectures, fund raisers and community activities. May we wish all our members a very Happy & Healthy Blooming New Year!
