FINAL UPDATE FROM KARAVAN 4 THE KIDZ
OLD CARNIVAL PHOTOS Dear Editor, Porthcawl Carnival 1969. 1 - Townswomen’s Guild 2 - Sea Cadets 3 - Chamber Of Trade Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl
Dear Editor, The fundraising has gone so well we have amazingly reached our total to purchase and furnish the caravan! We want to thank everyone who has given so generously in our aim to purchase and donate a second caravan to Latch - the Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity at Trecco Bay. Thank you once again for ALL your kind donations and also to the teachers, pupils, parents and sponsors of the Nottage Primary School promenade run, Clarks Shoe Shop in Porthcawl, David Dummett and the Caravan Warehouse team for their first class work, the Porthcawl branch of Specsavers, the Porthcawl Rotary club and finally, Seaside News for their continued support. We are incredibly grateful and indebted for helping us achieve our goal. Children diagnosed with cancer and their families are now able to stay in both Emyr’s Karavan4thekidz 1 & 2. The fundraising will continue via the Emyr Owen branch of Latch in order to pay ground rent, utilities and to ensure children have free holidays. We will also continue to support Latch in providing children diagnosed with cancer and their families, with the care, equipment, and specialist staff they need throughout their treatment and afterwards. Many thanks again for your amazing efforts. Karavan 4 the Kidz

GRASS CUTTING
PORTHCAWL HARBOUR ENTRANCE
Dear Editor, Has Glenn White of Nottage (Letters - June 2016) been avoiding TV for the past 6 years? He seems to have missed the arrival of austerity and that councils are bearing the brunt of this. Grass cutting is not a protected department of council services and they have already received mass cuts to their budget. There is no cash available to cut the grass more than once or twice a year. I understand that the department is being asked to cut another 50% from its budget for 2017-2018, so he will be lucky to see the grass cut at all next year. Perhaps he should let go of his Porthcawl paranoia and look around to see that NO part of the county is getting the grass cut regularly. Unless we are all willing to pay more taxes, then this is the reality of future public services. Alan Morgan Brackla, Bridgend

LITTER SURVEY ON REST BAY BEACH Dear Editor, We are writing on behalf of West Park Primary School. This term, Year 5 carried out a litter survey between Rest Bay and Pink Bay and we were shocked by the results. Our data showed us that 22% of the litter found could not be recycled and 78 % could be recycled. There were 86 pieces of litter altogether, meaning there were 67 recyclable and 19 non-recyclable. Recycling one single aluminium can, can save enough energy to watch three hours of TV or to run one hundred lightbulbs for four hours. We do not understand why Aberavon and Barry beaches are cleaned daily but our beaches are not. We propose that Porthcawl deserves the same treatment as the other Welsh beaches. Not only is littering bad for the environment but it looks unattractive too. People will be put off visiting our beaches due to the danger and unpleasantness of the litter. They will visit Aberavon or Barry instead. Businesses are also likely to suffer, if visitor numbers fall, they may not earn the money to keep their businesses afloat and may eventually be forced to shut down. The impact of the amount of litter is shocking. Sea turtles and other wildlife around the world eat or get tangled up in plastic rings or other materials. Dirty and sharp litter can cause diseases, internal bleeding, cuts and scars. Much of this could be resolved if more bins were provided, emptied far more regularly, households recycled and the council or beach owners cleaned our beaches on a daily basis. Thank you for reading. Year 5 at West Park Primary School, Porthcawl
MY BROTHER’S BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS Dear Editor, My brother is a keen photographer that uses his smart phone to take beautiful photographs. I believe that he has a rare talent but refuses to show it off. I was wondering how if you could make it possible for his pictures to feature in the next Seaside News? He has many images of the coast surrounding us and I believe it is a shame that he won’t share them! His name is Tom Davey. Many thanks, Holly Crook, Broadlands, Bridgend.

SCHOOLS BRIDGEND ROTARY’S JUNIOR SCHOOL QUIZ The Rotary Club of Bridgend held its Junior Schools Quiz at Litchard Primary School (winners of last year’s quiz) on Thursday 19th May. Pupils from eight primary schools in Bridgend participated, which included Brackla Primary School, Litchard Primary School, Maes yr Haul Primary School, Oldcastle Primary School, Pencoed Primary School, Tondu Primary School, Trelales Primary School and Tremains Primary School. Each school had four team members representing them, consisting of a pupil from Years, 3, 4 5 and 6 respectively. The youngsters answered a broad range of questions from the Quiz Master, Rotarian Gillian Hale, which tested their knowledge of geography, history, maths, spelling, literature and many other subjects. This highly entertaining and very enjoyable evening was well supported by teachers and families of the team members. Every team did extremely well and the overall winner was Tondu Primary School, represented by Emily Williamson Year 3, Lillieeve Cronin Year 4, Seren Dare Year 5 and Benji Lock Year 6. All of the pupils participating in the quiz received a Certificate from the President of Bridgend Rotary, Alan Reeks and the winning team received a Gift Token, which had been sponsored by Apollo Teaching Services Ltd. AFON Y FELIN NEWS We have had a very busy time this term. In The Big Pedal Fortnight, we amassed 426 journeys, placing us 2nd in the cluster and 5th in Bridgend County! Our wonderful new Cycle Shelter has been installed, thank you to the Kenfig Trust for this. Everybody’s bicycles and scooters will be kept safe throughout the school day, and we held celebrations through the week. Simon Richardson MBE officially opened the shelter. He won two golds and one silver medal at the Beijing Paralympics in cycling. He talked to the children about the importance of wearing a helmet and safe cycling, and he brought his medals and his Paralympic Torch that he used to light the 2012 Cauldron in Cardiff. The children presented him with a thank you card that they had all signed. The children all dressed up as superheroes to end the week. The Family Learning Group enjoyed a bus trip to Porthcawl recently, they saw the lighthouse and Mr Carwyn Jones! Year 6 have attended the Crucial Crew event at Bettws Community Centre, the children are faced with mock up dangerous situations that could happen in real life, and shown the best way to react at these times, very valuable lessons! EARLY DEADLINE NOTIFICATION FOR AUGUST ISSUE Sunday 10th July - 10pm.
ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS As the exam season comes to a close, it has been a very busy and productive couple of months. Many teachers have gone beyond what they are expected to do and have come in to work to support our pupils during the school holidays ready for their exams. We look forward to seeing the results of our pupils’ efforts. The Year 6 Welcome Mass went extremely well with the involvement of our primary schools along with our annual ‘Going Solomble’ concert, where we have some truly remarkable players. As you read the Seaside News, our school orchestra will either be in Lake Garda, Italy or on their way there to perform some musical extravaganza. Also, outside the classroom, there continue to be many opportunities for students to enhance their learning through extra-curricular activities and experiences of other cultures. We were delighted to welcome back the Bridgend/Louisiana Church Partnership Group for their day of music and activities. Last day in school for pupils is Tuesday 19th July and all pupils return back to school on Monday 5 September 2016. Have a good holiday everyone! Mrs Angela Keller Head Teacher Seaside News | 16
We are nearly at the end of another busy and successful year at Porthcawl Primary. We are delighted that all of our hard work in English and Literacy has been recognised and we have been made a Curriculum Hub school by Central South Consortium. This means we will be working with schools across South Wales on all aspects of English. The end of year also means a number of exciting events. Coming soon we have sports day, the end of year production, the summer fair and our annual residential trip. On the residential we will be doing a number of activities from survival and raft building to paddle boarding and abseiling. We also have an exciting visit to Royal Porthcawl for a golfing session. This follows an exciting visitor to our school. We were delighted to welcome the famous Claret Jug golfing trophy, which was brought all the way from the British Golf Museum in St Andrews, Scotland. It was great to see the trophy up close and we even helped clean it! For information on our busy end of year schedule see our website or check our school Twitter. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
On 13th June, the entire Year 10 participated in the Race for Life, completed over a 2km - 5km course; whatever distance the pupils felt comfortable with. Many wore pink and ran for someone, (survivors of cancer, people living with cancer and people who they have lost to cancer), wearing their names on their backs. All pupils received medals as a thank you from Cancer Research UK and have raised an incredible £600. Well done! The Humanities pupils were extremely enthusiastic about their visits overseas during half term. Geography students visited Sorrento, Pompeii and Capri. They made ice-cream, Mozzarella cheese and pizzas at la Sorgenta farm and trekked Mount Vesuvius; walking on the caldera of Solfatara. They finished in Rome visiting the Vatican City, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Catacombs, Colosseum, and St Peter’s Square. History students visited New York and Washington where as well as enjoying the traditional highlights, such as the Empire State Building and the White House, pupils were particularly moved by the 9/11 Memorial Site, Arlington Cemetery and the Holocaust Memorial Museum, even meeting a Holocaust survivor. Tilly Perks (Year 10) said: “We learnt a huge amount during our trip, not just about history, but about American culture as well. It was a life changing experience for all involved and we are so grateful that we got such an amazing opportunity at such a young age.” Andrew Slade Head Teacher
WEST PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL We have had a very busy start to this term. Year 6 visited Crucial Crew to learn about important life safety and had a visit from PC Carpenter to discuss mobile phone safety. Year 5 have entered a public speaking competition and have written a letter to complain about litter on the coast – see the letters pages of Seaside News! Year 4 and 5 had intensive swimming lessons for two weeks. This will help to keep them safe over the summer. Josh Aubrey, from Porthcawl CC, visited to teach cricket skills. Year 3 have been designing dog waste bins for beaches and have visited the coast looking at erosion and beach combing.
Year 2 have written letters and been learning about objects that float and sink. Year 1 has been learning about pirates and designing treasure chests out of egg boxes. They went to the beach on a treasure hunt and completed a diary! Our youngest children have been searching Captain Perry Winkle’s ship and exploring different parts. Our rugby team has had a great season, only losing one game. We look forward to the Ospreys beach tag competition this term. The Netball team competed in a number of tournaments and did very well. In Glamorgan Valleys, our team came third overall. Bendigedig! The cross-country team has competed in the Bridgend Schools races. As well as improving, in our latest race, we ran extremely well with most of our Cross Country members coming in the top 15! Written by Year 5 journalists
PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS
We are extremely fortunate to have such a focused School Council who have worked tirelessly this year. Elected by their peers in September 2015 the ten representatives from Years 2-6 have shown true commitment to their roles. Their responsibilities have included attending weekly meetings, organising fundraising events, meeting with the governing body and working together with the school teaching staff. To date they have collected over £500 for local charities, recently hosting a non-uniform day in support of Corey Cox from Year 5 who is raising funds for the Paediatric Physio Department at the Princess of Wales Hospital. One of the most talked about events of the year was their No Smoking Day campaign where they targeted parents on the school yard, offering advice on how to quit, improve their health and save money. They were honoured recently to take part in the annual miner’s presentation in Kenfig Hill joining members of the local community in remembering miners of the past. All of the staff and pupils at Pil we would like to say a big thank you for their efforts. N Pryce, Head Teacher Tel: (01656) 815630

SCHOOLS NOTTAGE NEWS
FOURTH GREEN FLAG FOR NEWTON
Almost the end of another school year! Where does the time go? Our Old Age Pensioners, Year 6, are now well prepared and eager to begin the next stage of their education however, they do have the small issue of preparing for their leaver’s show on the 18th July. We wish them well for life in the comprehensive school. The Annual Promenade Run was a great success with around 200 children taking part. Initially, there were doubts about it going ahead due to maintenance of the lower promenade but contractors, Centregreat Limited, saved the day, making the site safe for the children to run. A big thank you to all the children, parents and sponsors for supporting this event. Congratulations to Mr Arbery who has been appointed to succeed Mr Gallagher with the responsibility for ‘Assessment, Recording and Reporting’ throughout the school. On a personal note, I have made the decision to retire at the end of the summer term and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, Governing Body and parents whose support I have had during 18 wonderful years at such a fantastic school. I shall miss Nottage dearly. Kerry Townley
Newton Primary School has some exciting news they would like to share… They were awarded their Fourth Green Flag last week! Mrs Donaldson, Eco Coordinator, said how proud she was of the schools Eco Committee who have worked so hard to achieve the Platinum Status. The Eco Committee have been involved in improving the school grounds, recycling rubbish, and running a Fair Trade cafe every month. They have also taken part in Switch Off Fortnight and had some great results in saving electricty. Our Fourth Green Flag will be flying high! Lisa Donaldson

What a year! I am proud that the outstanding qualities of Cynffig students continue to be recognised in so many areas; a record number of year 13 students have been offered unconditional offers for University, whilst Year 11 students have tirelessly committed themselves to achieving their very best. We look forward now to welcoming another record number of pupils in Year 7. This is another indication of the ever-increasing esteem in which the school is held in the community and beyond. We have once again been awarded the Careers Wales Mark as an endorsement of our continuing drive to secure the brightest futures for all our students. Next year with our new status as ‘Creative Arts Lead School’ the innovative strengths of staff and students here at Cynffig have been recognised. I would also like to applaud those who participated in the Pyle Community Festival. Our school orchestra performed a range of pieces supported by soloists Megan Stevens, Aled Humphries and Rebecca Coleman. Congratulations also to the key stage 3 and 4 students of Da Capo and Crescendo. As we say goodbye to some, and begin a new journey with others, Cynffig students will always hit the high notes! BOOK OF THE MONTH The Hanging Club by Tony Parsons
Conn Iggulden Ravenspur: Rise of the Tudors
This is the third outing for Max Wolfe and is the perfect introduction to the London underworld that Tony Parsons has so vividly created, loosely based on his time embedded with the Vice Squad. A group of vigilantes, quickly nick-named, “The Hanging Club,” are handing out justice online. Using Britain’s most famous executioner, Albert Pierrepoint as their mask to hide behind, they begin snatching people off the street and filming their executions. However with those being snatched seen as unworthy of sympathy, Max finds himself questioning what justice really means.

News ONE YEAR TO GO UNTIL THE URDD NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD The countdown has begun for the arrival of showpiece Welsh language youth festival, the Urdd, in Bridgend County Borough. Up to 100,000 visitors are expected to travel into the area when the celebration of literature, music and performing arts takes place at Bridgend College’s Pencoed Campus between 29th May and 3rd June 2017. The Urdd National Eisteddfod provides a unique opportunity to celebrate our heritage, our future and the amazing talents of our young people. It generates widespread media coverage for a whole week, and benefits the local economy to the tune of more than £6m with people staying in local accommodation, visiting other attractions in the area, shopping and using local transport. As well as traditional music, dance, literature, performance and visual arts competitions, visitors to the Urdd National Eisteddfod will also find hundreds of colourful stalls around the ‘Maes’ offering fun activities and entertainment. A huge amount of preparation is taking place ahead of Urdd 2017, and several local groups have been set up with volunteers working extremely hard to raise the necessary funds for staging the event. If you would like to find out more about getting involved, email Jordan Morgan-Hughes at Jordan@urdd.org for further details. Councillor Mel Nott OBE Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
ENJOY SUMMER FUN AND SET A NEW WORLD RECORD Children across Bridgend County Borough are being invited to tackle this year’s Summer Reading Challenge and help set a new world record. With six-foot-high stacks of brand new Roald Dahl books delivered to every library - the same height of the big friendly author – in preparation for this year’s scheme, more than 3,000 children are expected to take part. To complete the Summer Reading Challenge, children are expected to read six or more library books over the school holidays. A number of other events featuring themed storytelling, crafts and more have been arranged throughout July and August to help support the scheme and support national celebrations marking 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl. On Saturday 20 August, children are being invited to dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl character and gather at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend between 11am-1pm with the aim of setting a new world record. The record attempt event will feature entertainment from author Mark Brake, stalls, a bouncy castle and live readings of some home-grown ‘revolting rhymes’ written by local school children. It’s a great way to encourage children to read and use their local library, and you can find out more at http:// summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ Councillor Huw David Deputy Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk Seaside News | 24

HSBC CLOSING IN PORTHCAWL News that HSBC is to close its Porthcawl branch is a blow not only to residents and customers, but also to the town centre. People use our high streets for many reasons including going to the bank. HSBC has told customers all their accounts will be transferred to its Bridgend branch so customers wanting to carry out a face-to-face transaction will have to travel there. I suspect many may choose to transfer to a different bank that still has a branch in Porthcawl. There is no doubt that taking away HSBC will impact on the high street. Spin-off trade for businesses near the bank will be hit if fewer people turn up in the town – and the decline of our high streets is a major concern nationally. Sadly, some of the blame has to lie with those customers who do their banking online. Yes, it is more convenient but the downside is the closure of branches. Banks are always seeking a way to maximise their profits and they can justify closing branches by pointing to declining footfall. The clear message to customers is – use it or lose it – whether it’s your post office, your local shop or your bank. HARBOURSIDE NEWS Thank you to everyone who attended our recent public consultation. It was a very successful event and illustrated just how passionate Porthcawl residents are about the Porthcawl Maritime Centre. The full planning application will be in the public domain shortly. We do, however, have something to ask of our supporters, and that is to kindly consider writing a letter of support to BCBC’s Planning Department to accompany our planning application, which was recently submitted. Please contact us on 01656 774341 or at: jayne@porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk if you would like us to help you to send a letter of support. Our SeaQuest Coastal Science and Discovery Division continues to prove very popular, and our latest event was to commemorate World Oceans Day. We held a celebratory swim, and thirty-six swimmers joined us for a cooling dip off Porthcawl Marina slipway. We would like to thank Surf Life Saving Association Wales for four boats and crew, Newton Lifeguard Club, Porthcawl Lifeguard Club, Porthcawl Sea Cadets and Porthcawl Marina. Future SeaQuest events include a joint event with RLNI on 24th July. Details of future events are on our website, along with our updated illustrations: www.porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk. News WORRIED ABOUT GYNAECOLOGICAL CANCER? JUST ASK EVE Gynaecological cancers are the second most common cancer among women in the UK. Statistics from gynaecological cancer research charity The Eve Appeal have shown an alarming lack of awareness about the significance of identifying early signs and symptoms. 71% of women have experienced a symptom of gynaecological cancer, yet nearly a fifth would wait four weeks or more before seeking advice. A third of those women say this is because symptoms are ‘not serious enough’ to visit a health professional and worryingly this increases to over half of women aged 16-24 years old. The Eve Appeal have launched a specialist nurse-led gynaecological cancer information service called Ask Eve. It will be confidential telephone and email support for those that are worried or may be at increased risk of developing symptoms and Ask Eve is being encouraged as a first port of call if they are delaying seeking help from a health professional. So whether you’re a patient, a worried woman, a relative of a woman affected by cancer, a clinician or a healthcare professional - The Eve Appeal’s new information service is here to provide that extra line of support. If you have a question about gynae cancers - you just need to ASK EVE! www.eveappeal.org.uk/nurse Madeleine Moon www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE PORTHCAWL NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION (NCI) LOOKOUT STATION In May, I was delighted to have been invited to join the Manager and Crew of Porthcawl National Coastwatch Institution for the official opening of the NCI Lookout Station in Porthcawl. The Lookout Station operates out of the grade II listed old Victorian Pilot Lookout Tower which was built in 1870. The Lookout Tower has undergone significant restoration both to the inside and to the exterior of the building. It is fantastic to see the Lookout Station restored to its former glory and being used to play an important role in coastal safety. This has been possible thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery, Bridgend County Borough Council, Cadw and NCI through the Porthcawl Townscape Heritage Initiative. NCI volunteers keep watch primarily at weekends but hope to extend their surveillance as more volunteers are trained as watchkeepers. It was great to see inside the Tower and to talk to the Station Manager and some of the volunteers who will be undertaking surveillance. I know that the watchkeepers will certainly be a welcome presence for people who visit and use our coastline for business and pleasure. Carwyn Jones Welsh Labour Leader Seaside News | 26

BUSES SET TO RETURN TO NEW ROAD I was pleased to support the decision by Bridgend County Borough Council to allocate £20,000 funding towards the cost of a Porthcawl Town Council scheme that aims to modernise ageing speed bumps located along the length of New Road. Speed bumps were originally introduced to New Road 40 years ago, but their height and design mean that they have become incompatible with modern buses, which now have lower accessible floors. As a result, buses have been using less direct routes into Porthcawl, including having to travel through the nearby housing estate. I hope this modernisation scheme will provide an important boost for public transport and encourage more people to travel to and from Newton, where I’m sure that the news will be welcomed by residents, as around half of the local community is of retirement age. It will also make a difference for the 300,000 visitors that stay at the Parkdean Holiday Park each year, and will help encourage more businesses to open up along New Road. The New Road scheme is just one of a series put forward by town and community councils, which will receive funding contributions from Bridgend County Borough Council, and is great news for the area. Councillor Charles Smith Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
OUR STEEL INDUSTRY NEEDS THE EUROPEAN UNION In a few days of writing this, the UK will go to the polls and decide whether to remain a part of the European Union or not. It’s often thought that everyone employed in the steel works also live in Port Talbot. Of course, a great many of them do. But in the past year or so, I have also met many who live in Porthcawl, Bridgend and Ogmore. Sadly, those who want to lead us out of the EU have not only plotted to ensure our steel industry suffers as a consequence of their ideological opposition – they have lied about it, too. UKIP will tell you that the European Commission blocked the imposition of higher tariffs on imported Chinese steel. Not true. It was the Council of Ministers, after heavy lobbying by the UK Government, that kyboshed commission proposals. Not only that, but UKIP MEPs in the European Parliament connived with Tory MEPs and also voted against. There are some 18,000 jobs dependent upon the Port Talbot steelworks. The local economy – including Porthcawl and the surrounding area – is also dependent upon its continued and sustained future. The truth of the matter is that there are still far too many people prepared to play politics in the midst of such a terrible crisis in order to mislead the public about the true worth of the European Union. I can only hope that the voting public decides to ignore their false claims when the polls open.

FEATURES LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS
This year’s golf day was, once again, a success and as a result Porthcawl Lions were able to donate £1,000 each to Prostate Cancer Cymru and Sandville Self Help Centre. A big thank you to the Grove Golf Club for allowing the club to hold the event there and to all those who either took part or sponsored a hole. At the end of the day the winners were the Pier, second were South Wales Police and third were the Greys. The winning ladies team was led by Janise Richards. Andrew Thomas accepted the cheque for Prostate Cancer and Gwyneth Poacher accepted the cheque for Sandville. The car boot sales and the book stalls continue (weather permitting), and the next major event is the classic car show and vintage fair on Saturday 6th August. There promises to be more cars and bikes than ever this year, as well as plenty of stalls and other attractions - so it should be a great day out for all the family! Entry is free (although donations will be gratefully collected.) A great way to occupy the children for one morning in the holidays is the Sandcastle Competition being held on Coney Beach on Friday 29th July. Also, don’t forget the Carnival on Saturday 23rd July, where Porthcawl Lions will have a float drawing attention to beach cleanups. John Cosson

BRIDGEND ROTARY SUPPORTS CHARITIES The Rotary Club of Bridgend has made contributions to 22 local charities so far this year, totalling over £11,000. This could increase further with another fundraising event taking place while the Seaside News is in print. Charity Officer, Rotarian David Hubbard, reporting to the Club meeting, said that over the last three years £30,000 had been raised for distribution to local charities, and a further £4,300 had been paid to Rotary Internationals own Charity, The Rotary Foundation. In conjunction with Bill Gates, the Rotary Foundation has been responsible for almost completely eradicating polio with the worldwide immunisation scheme. Only a handful of cases have been reported in four countries last year, and the battle continues to reduce that to nil over the next few years. David paid tribute to the hardworking Rotarians who had raised this money for good causes .He also wished to thank the people of Bridgend who so willingly support the Clubs charity collections and fund raising events. FEATURES THANKS FROM PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB
The Porthcawl Stroke Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr JE & Mrs Wendy Williams for their kind donations to the Porthcawl Stroke Club. Wendy is such an amiable person who strives in supporting her community in various ways. Wendy is an active member of the Sker WI (Welfare officer); an active volunteer at West Park Primary school, involved in many local charities, and her genuine caring personality shines through. Tirelessly she works on behalf of people less fortunate than herself, and it was wonderful for me to receive a visit from Wendy with beautiful flowers, when I myself was poorly. I hope that her life will be full of joy and happiness, a very special lady who deserves the very best that life can bring. On behalf of the Porthcawl Stroke Club we sincerely thank all our supporters who without their support we could not lead such an active and enjoyable life. Anyone wishing to join the Porthcawl Stroke Club, please contact Keith and Mary Duggan (01656) 773376 or Mrs Penny Owen (01656) 783989.

LARGE GALAXY ORBITING MILKY WAY A large galaxy orbiting the Milky Way has seemingly appeared out of nowhere. The newly discovered dwarf galaxy, which has been named Crater 2, sits around 400,000 light-years away, and has already earned the title of the fourth-largest known galaxy circling our own. But how does a galaxy that big stay hidden for so long? Its stars are so diffuse that it is remarkably dark, and it has been masked until now by its brighter neighbours. In fact, it is one of the dimmest galaxies ever detected. As far as we know, the Milky Way is orbited by 49 other galaxies, but this research suggests that there may be other dark galaxies in our cosmic neighbourhood, that have remained hidden because of their diffuse, ghostly appearance. Crater 2 was first detected in January, when astronomers used a computer algorithm to study images taken by the Very Large Telescope in Chile, and then pinpoint regions where there might be unusual clustering of stars - one of those clusters turned out to be Crater 2. In the last 10 years alone, the number of known satellite galaxies has doubled. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Paul the apostle said that he wasn’t ashamed of the gospel (Rom 1 v 16). The word gospel means good news and it is the good news we read about in the Bible. An example of this message is found in Rom 5 v 17 where Paul says that if we receive an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness we will reign in life. I am sure we all want to reign in life. Paul tells us how to do it. He says we must receive two things: 1. The gift of righteousness - this works at two levels. Firstly, that we have a right relationship with God. Secondly, we then at the same time experience God taking us on a journey of transformation so we live righteously (not perfect but definitely changed!). 2. An abundance of grace - this means to continually receive things like Gods strength, power, love and favour as we have a relationship with him. Surely all this will energise us to reign in life. But we must receive the gift! I encourage you to do that today and humbly receive from God, knowing that he loves you. No wonder Paul wasn’t ashamed of this message. Neil Harvey

FEATURES PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Last month I said I hope the good weather continues and it seems as I write this in early June that it does! At least where we are in beautiful Porthcawl! Our speaker in May was Mr Romeo Bassini - continuing last years talk on the Italian Connection which we enjoyed. We learnt of the fate of the liner The Andorra Star, which was torpedoed while taking deported Italians to imprisonment in Canada with huge losses of life in 1940 when Mussolini had declared war on Britain. A memorial to this liner in the Catholic Cathedral in Cardiff is well worth a visit. He also told us of the different occupations taken by Italian immigrants arriving after 1945. All our groups met as usual. The literary group discussed the poetry of Robert Herrick, and the luncheon group dined at the Angel in Maudlam. We have had to make a change to our programme this month and will be welcoming Rev Clive Williams who was unable to come last month. He will tell us of ‘The Music of Handel’. We always enjoy his talks so do come and hear him. We welcome visitors to come for two meetings to meet us and decide if they would like to join us. At our last committee meeting we were discussing our afternoon tea, which we are holding on Wednesday 17th August. We have a limited number of tickets at £7 so if you would like to come please get in touch and we will put you on the list. Dorothy Thomas Tel: (01656) 772157

There were in excess of 120 children this year from the following schools; Maes-yr- Haul, Cefn Crybwr, Llangewyd, Caerau, Garth and Nantyfyllan. The children enjoyed pottery making, a cinema show, tours of the woollen and grain mills, a coracle display, petting young animals and feeding the trout. The conclusion was the eagerly anticipate Duck Race with medals and prizes for the four winners. Each school also received a medal as a momento of the occasion. Organisation by the Gower Heritage Centre and travel arrangements by Express Travel, were first class and contributed to a most enjoyable and successful day out. LOTS OF SUPPORT FOR CARERS The new Deputy Major of Bridgend County Borough, Councillor Cherie Jones recently opened a carers information market at Princess of Wales Hospital in celebration of Carers Week 2016. Carers Week is an annual campaign highlighting the challenges carers face and recognises the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. The market involved voluntary organisations offering lots of information to staff, patients and visitors. Led by Bridgend Carers Centre, organisations included Age Connects, Bipolar UK, Bridgend County Borough Council, Community Voice Bridgend Young Carers Project, Crossroads Care, Ovarian Cancer Action, Hafal, Mental Health Matters Wales and Y Bont. Helen Pitt, Bridgend Carers Centre Manager, said: “There are over 18,000 carers in Bridgend County Borough, caring for older, sick or disabled loved ones. It’s in everyone’s best interest to recognise the role of carers within the community and the sacrifices they make. Our information market provided the ideal opportunity for people and staff to speak to organisations who understand what it means to be a carer and the support they need.” If you are a carer in need of support, contact Bridgend Carers Centre, T: 01656 658479.

FEATURES 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Bridgend Lions’ new President John Paton, accompanied by a former President Bryant Thomas, visited Tree Tops and Foxtroy Residential Care Homes Recently, as a few of the residents there celebrated 90th birthdays around the same time as our Queen. The lovely 90 year old ladies were presented with beautiful bouquets and large boxes of Thorntons chocolates and the only 90 year old gentleman received a basket of fruit with his chocolates. They were all delighted with their surprise gifts and thanks are sent to the wonderful staff at both homes for their hospitality and making the visit possible. Carol Thomas
PORTHCAWL MUSEUM NEWS One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Museum, is that people entrust us with their treasures and as a result, we gain information. An example arrived this week. Amongst a collection of memorabilia, we found an edition of the Porthcawl Advertiser 2nd September 1949. One article intrigued us. Porthcawl, 55 years ago. This referred to the establishment of a Porthcawl Council. It was in 1893 that the parish of Newton-Nottage became a Local Government District Board, which met at the National School, Lias Road. (The Co-Op). However, the Local Government Act of 1894, abolished the Boards and brought in Urban District Councils. The PUDC was inaugurated in December 1894. The first Chairman was John Grace. Various places were used as a base, from 1894 onwards, including the Ocean House in Dock Street (The Coast), the Coliseum, John Street (The Spar) and South Road, before eventually moving to Victoria Ave in the 1970’s. In 1974, the re-organisation of County boundaries resulted in the reduction of the Porthcawl Council’s power to Ogwr Borough Council. Bridgend County Borough Council took over on 1st April 1996. More news from the archives, next month. Ceri Joseph www.seasidenews.co.uk
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH When people discover that I’m a minister I often have to deal with the suspicious looks I get either because they are pretty sure I just lied to them or because I now represent an institution they thoroughly distrust. Seemingly, to many people, as a minister I deal in a moral reward and punishment system. As if we are all laboratory mice receiving nasty shocks from God for going the wrong way and little reward pellets for going the right way in the maze of life. If my work as a minister does just one thing I wish it to be this – that If you have ever been told that God is some kind of punishing, fickle, monster who is angry with you for being a human being then you have been lied to – and for that I am so sorry. This angry God is not the God I know. And it is not the God revealed to us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth – who loved and healed and forgave people indiscriminately. Jesus was God’s way of telling us who God is. God Bless. Lewis Rees Minister with Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel
PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS The highlight of the Club’s activities was the Inter-Club Fashion Show held on Wednesday, 27th May, in the Hi-Tide. Six club members modelled the most up-to-date outfits, hats, and jewellery from Samantha B, Ladies Fashions and Accessorise. Representatives from District 15 attended the event. Following the Fashion Show we all enjoyed a delightful afternoon tea. There was an opportunity to buy some of the items shown. Samantha B provided a raffle prize. The money raised was given to the McMillan Charity. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon. The Club Committee, together with Past Presidents, had an evening meal in Isabella’s on Friday 27th May. This annual event was much enjoyed by all who had worked hard promoting the many different aspects of our Club’s activities. Before the June monthly meeting and AGM, we had a very tasty meal at the Grove Golf Club. Following the Treasurer’s Report, the Club decided that donations from our Charity Account be given to Tŷ Hafan, Noah’s Ark, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Tools for Self-reliance, Bridgend Deaf Club, Friends of Velindre, Sandville, Porthcawl Stroke Club, PAWS and the RNLI. The monthly Sooty Box donations were sent to the RNIB. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Tuesday the 14th of June and we were once again in the Talbot Centre for our monthly meeting. We had been asked to judge the cakes in the ‘Bake it’ competition held this morning in the Talbot Centre. It was one of the events in the Pyle Community Council Week. Several of our WI members were meeters and greeters, and several of our committee members were judges. We hope it will be a yearly event. Notices of forthcoming events were discussed including our August trip where we are hoping to visit The Royal Mint, which will include tea. WI business over, we listened to a talk on Cardiff our capital city by Rosemary Sadden. She was very entertaining and told us so much that we didn’t know about our city. Next month we are having a talk on Park Homes by Stephen James. We had a new visitor this month who is interested in joining our WI. All are welcome and if you would like to meet us, pop in and you can enjoy our talks and of course tea and biscuits. Christine Callaghan Seaside News | 34
SKER WI NEWS The President Nora Williams welcomed 44 members to the June meeting of Sker WI. Members were reminded of the visit to Abbey Cwm Hir. Our Summer Fayre will take place on the 15th July at Trinity Church Hall between 10am-12midday. There is also a trip to Cheltenham planned for later in the year. The speaker for the evening was Janet Jennings who gave a talk about ‘Hats through the Ages’. Hats have been worn since Victorian times and have varied over the years - some being quite elaborate, and during the 1940’s plainer. Hats like the Pillbox were worn during 1950/60’s by Jackie Kennedy and airhostesses. During the 1970’s they went out of fashion but by the 1980’s Princess Diana helped to bring them back into fashion. Today hats like fascinators are worn at Ladies Day at Ascot. We were shown quite a number of the different hats that have been worn over the years. Muriel Stubbs gave a vote of thanks for a very interesting talk. Our next meeting is on July 14th at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage at 7pm. The speaker will be Jane Jennings giving a talk on ‘Life in TV & as High Sheriff.’ Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

FINANCIAL PITFALLS TO AVOID IF YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED According to the Office for National Statistics, more over 65’s are marrying or entering into civil partnerships than younger people these days. Getting your affairs in order before you marry can prevent difficulties at a later stage, especially if you have been married before and already have children. If you have not made a will that specifically states that you have a forthcoming marriage in mind, the act of getting married automatically revokes all previous wills. If you have not made a will, your new spouse could inherit all of your estate, leaving your children out. If you own the marital home outright and simply leave it to your children, give some thought as to where your spouse is going to live after you have died, and where their income will come from. You may need to create a trust to give your spouse a lifetime interest in your home. Conversely, if you are the person who moves in with an existing property owner or the sole tenant of a rented property, ensure that the title deeds or tenancy is transferred into your joint names. If you buy a home jointly with your new spouse, consider changing the ownership so that you can leave your share of the property to your children, rather than it passing automatically to your spouse. If you receive a pension, you may need to check what happens if you remarry or enter into a civil partnership. Many pension schemes offer spouse and partner benefits after the scheme member has died. Also, you may be able to use your partner’s NI record in order to give you a better state pension if you lack contributions of your own. If any of the above concerns you, please contact us to discuss. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

When you want to sell or acquire a business, you have two main options: Business Transfer or Share Transfer. Sheraz Akram weighs up the pros and cons: If you chose a Share Transfer, the purchaser will be buying your shares in the company but if you chose a Business Transfer, only the assets are transferred to the purchaser. The two structures are fundamentally different, so which is right for you? Business Transfer Pros The purchaser is generally exposed to less risk If the seller is a company, unless there is an arrangement to the contrary, any warranties or indemnities contained in any agreement will be given by the company and not the shareholder. Cons The purchaser will need to ensure that every aspect of the business is legally transferred – including any properties, employees or contracts This involves third parties and, consequently, more legal and management input The seller will need to tidy up the entity that held the business. This can mean closing a company down, stripping out any cash and chasing unpaid debts. Share Transfer Pros All of the business and assets will remain held by the target company and the purchaser simply steps into the shoes of the selling shareholder(s). So there is no need for the assets of the company to be transferred to the purchaser. The company will no longer belong to the sellers at the end of the transaction and so the purchaser will inherit any problems (such as outstanding liabilities/debts) that exist at the date of sale. Cons This is generally more risky for the purchaser, so the contract and transaction are more involved with more warranties and indemnities included. The seller will be giving the warranties/indemnities personally as the seller. Which option you choose may be dictated by the taxation position of the parties. Before making any decision, it’s important that you carefully consider the legal and taxation implications – this means getting professional advisors involved early on.

July Savings for New Landlords!
porthcawl@peteralan.co.uk www.peteralan.co.uk
Peter Alan are offering 50% off set up fees for all new managed landlords throughout July. Rental accommodation is as popular an option as ever, meaning the lettings market is booming and landlords are finding themselves in a very favourable position. Due to a current shortfall in quality rental accommodation available the demand for properties to rent in the Porthcawl and surrounding areas is huge. Throughout the month of July the Porthcawl branch of Peter Alan will be offering 50% off set up fees for all new managed landlords! Jeremy Poor, Porthcawl Lettings Valuer, commented “With a large number of prospective tenants registered on our mailing list, we are seeing properties being let within days! If you are a landlord looking for a new tenant or struggling to let your property out, we would love the opportunity to help you. At Peter Alan we pride ourselves in offering the complete lettings service. With a dedicated lettings team within the Porthcawl branch (open 6 days a week) and an extensive support team based in Cardiff we really can offer specialist advice on every aspect of the process.
For example, in order to raise standards in the private rented sector it is now compulsory for all landlords in Wales to be registered and licensed. If you are unsure how this will affect you as a landlord, require further information or would like assistance in registering please do not hesitate to call us.” Peter Alan has three times been crowned the Sunday Times ‘Letting Agency of the Year – Wales’, proving their lettings division is truly first class. To maximise the exposure of each property landlords benefit from their property being advertised online on Peter Alan’s own website and on both Rightmove and Zoopla, the two biggest property websites. Gemma Lyons, Porthcawl lettings Negotiator, commented, “We always carry out accompanied viewings, allowing us to vet and find the most appropriate tenants for landlord’s properties. This combined with our comprehensive referencing checks means we are confident that each new tenant we put forward meets our landlord’s required high standards.”
If you are interested in talking to Peter Alan about their range of letting services then call the Porthcawl team on 01656 771600 and speak to their lettings specialists today! www.seasidenews.co.uk

Finance STUCK ON STANDARD VARIABLE MORTGAGE RATE? During this prolonged period of the Bank of England base rate having remained static since 2009, one of the aspects that seems to have been forgotten about by many people is the fact that they are now on their lender’s standard variable rate (SVR). A great many of these people could be enjoying a much better interest rate on their mortgage with a different lender and saving a substantial amount of money by doing so. The current rate war going on across the lending industry means we could assist many borrowers in securing a better deal, subject to status. If YOU think you could be paying too much or would like a better rate on YOUR mortgage, give us a call. It won’t cost you a penny to find out and you could be very surprised, since rates in some cases are around a little more than 1%, which is unheard of historically! So, if you are on SVR or haven’t reviewed your mortgage for some time, we may be able to assist you in securing a new deal, with an independent mortgage Adviser scouring the market on your behalf – and age is not the problem it used to be. One lender will now offer eligible applicants a mortgage up to age 95 with others going to age 85, hence providing a possible solution to those with (interest-only) mortgages well into retirement. Whatever your mortgage requirements, getting in touch is the first step towards finding the solution. Call us on 01656 782545 today – we will arrange to see you at no charge. HOMEBUYER SURVEY When buying a house, you have to decide whether or not to have a Homebuyer Survey, whereby a detailed report on the property is prepared and can give you a much better assessment of your proposed purchase. Often a property has perhaps not been upgraded in many years or it is of a particular type of construction, where deterioration has taken place. Of course, there is a cost for the report, however such a survey could help you avoid buying a house that has problems. We have now partnered with a National Company which will provide you with a RICS ( Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors ) surveyor, who will prepare the report for you. Call us for details – 782545. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545
IN SPECIE PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS Transferring an asset ‘in specie’ means to transfer the ownership of that asset from one person, or company to another person in its current form, i.e. without the need to convert the asset to cash. This could for example be a building or shares. Advantages: – You obtain tax relief for the pension contribution thus reducing your tax bill on the in-specie contribution – Avoids the need for the asset to be sold in order to transfer into the pension and re-buy with associated costs – All future growth of the asset within the pension scheme will be free from CGT. For example Mr ‘A’ owns a share portfolio valued at £40,000 and has unused pension relief from previous years and has annual earnings of £95,000. The shares can be set up as an in specie contribution with the pension fund recovering £10,000 of basic rate tax to make the gross £50,000 contribution with Mr ‘A’ Seaside News | 38
recovering a further £10,000 of income tax from HM Revenue and Customs. Pension fund value is improved by an additional £10,000 and the shares now grow within a tax-free environment. Mr ‘A’ has reduced his personal tax bill by £10,000. CST Wealth has extensive experience in this area - please call for a no obligation meeting. BIRDWATCH: HOUSE SPARROWS House Sparrows are closely associated with human habitats, often living close to (or even in) the homes of people. Whilst the stout bill is designed for eating seeds, young birds are fed on insects. The crown and nape of adult males is grey, the sides of the head brown and a wide black bib extends down onto the chest. Dominant males have larger bibs. The back is a warm brown, streaked with black, with a few white wing feathers. Adult females, and the juveniles of both sexes, are a light sandy brown with brown and grey streaks on the back and wings. Their population has roughly halved in recent decades in both rural and urban areas. Garden BirdWatch data show that the rate of decline has been more pronounced in London and South-East England than in Wales and Scotland. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS Well, whatever else is said about gardeners, they have to be the most optimistic group of people on the planet. Apart from the physical effort required, the constant weather changes, invasions by insects and slugs, they still manage to produce some extraordinary results. Local gardens are opened to view by the public, and already plans are in hand to prepare for entries in the local horticultural shows in August and September. The ladies are also ‘on the ball’, starting with pickling and preserves so that there is plenty of time for cake-making nearer the date. You can plant second cropping potatoes now to have new potatoes for Christmas. In the greenhouse pinch out tomato side shoots each week, and cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses, it will improve air circulation. Feed with diluted tomato fertilise once a week, if leaves are pale and yellow feed more regularly. I have hung yellow sticky traps in the greenhouse to catch insects. Remember to dead-head bedding plants and perennial plants to stop them self seeding and encourage further flowering. Lectures have finished for this year; Patrick is already arranging a programme for next year. Gwen Bradford

CORNELLY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ANNUAL SHOW Cornelly Horticultural Society are proud to announce their 5th Annual Village Show - taking place on Saturday 13th August at Cornelly Community Centre. The competition is open to everyone and classes range from fruit & veg to flowers, craft, cookery, art and a children’s category. Schedules and entry forms are available from Pyle Life Centre and Cornelly Hardware Store. Visitors are welcome to come along for homemade refreshments and to browse the wonderful skills on show in the many exhibits, there will be an auction of produce after the prize giving and raffle, so you could bag yourself a local, fresh, homegrown or homemade bargain! The hall will be open between 08:00 - 11:30 for exhibitors to set up, and then 14:00 - 17:00 for visitors. We encourage everyone to come along, as last year was such a successful and enjoyable day we don’t want you to miss out! Rachel Brent rachelbrent@live.co.uk
NEWS FROM CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Summer growth is in full swing. Roses will never look better and the veg plot is becoming fruitful again! Make sure you net your fruit bushes and strawberries - birds love to steal from them and they are up much earlier than we are (pigeons especially have no morality!) A bush full of gooseberries can disappear in less time than it takes a courgette to turn into a marrow and we all know that’s an overnight job! When runner-beans reach the top of the pole, pinch them out (if you can reach). This encourages flowering and bushing out at a lower more pickable level. Keep mowing regularly except in a drought, in hot weather set mower blades at a slightly higher level, don’t worry about brown patches on the lawn – they recover quickly when the autumn rains come! Watering little and often is no good, better to do it thoroughly twice a week so plants put roots down in search of water and not turn up to the surface looking for the little drop you’ve given them! Did you know – Opium poppies are grown commercially in six UK counties to produce medical morphine! Repeat after me – Water, hoe, dead-head. Again! Chris Early

Health EXERCISE INCREASES YOUR CHANCES OF SURVIVING A HEART ATTACK Researchers from the Henry Ford Health System, in Detroit, and Johns Hopkins, in Baltimore, found that people who were physically fit were 40 percent less likely to die within a year following their first heart attack compared to those who were out of shape. Physical fitness was measured using an exercise stress test. The fitter the person, the lower their likelihood of dying from a heart attack became. Specifically, for each level of increased fitness reached during the stress test, the risk of dying in the year following the first heart attack dropped by up to 10 percent. The association was so strong, the researchers compared low fitness to other traditional risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes, for early death following a heart attack. CORNS EXPLAINED Many of us suffer from pain or discomfort when we walk due to corns on our toes or feet. Corns are areas of thick, hardened skin that are caused by excessive pressure or friction on the skin. Corns are commonly caused by ill-fitting footwear and pressure on bony areas of the foot, such as a joint. Three most common types of corns: Hard Corns * A small area of raised, hardened skin, approximately the size of a small pea. They usually occur within a wider area of thickened skin and can be quite painful. Soft Corns * These appear between the toes where skin can be moist from sweat or not drying your feet properly. They appear lighter in colour than hard corns and have a rubbery texture. Seed Corns * A tiny corn that occurs on the bottom of the foot, typically the ball. They can appear singly or in clusters. Treatment: * Gently use a pumice stone and apply moisturizing cream to remove the thickened skin gradually * Foam wedges, toe inserts and insoles can help relieve pressure * If you experience recurring problems, contact a foot health professional to seek further advice. Addressing your diet is critical, both for weight loss and for controlling inflammation, and promoting healthy bones and cartilage. Two recent studies confirmed that people who eat a processed and fried food diet high in sugars and red meat are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune disorder) than those who eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, poultry, and fish. A number of supplements such as turmeric, hyaluronic acid, and astaxanthin, among others, may also be helpful for controlling the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. The notion that exercise is detrimental to your joints is a misconception; there is no evidence to support this belief. It’s simply a myth that you can ‘wear down’ your joints such as your knees and hips from average levels of exercise and/or normal activity. EARLY DEADLINE FOR AUGUST ISSUE - SUNDAY 10TH JULY

Steve Maitland Thomas and the gang have got the line-up sorted for this year’s Newton Beer and Pop Festival, which kicks off on Newton Green at 10am on Saturday 27th August. I will give the full running order in my column next month, but some bands definitely appearing include Rude Souls, Side Effects, The Guzzards, National Shame, Tex and the Mushrooms and The Circuit Symphony. It’s going to be a great day! Keep an eye and an ear out for Bridgend duo Phil and Ash. Phil James and Rob Ash are veterans of the South Wales music scene and both are singer/ songwriters. Phil has released two albums and three singles while Rob, whose 70s band James Hogg signed to the Regal Zaraphone record label, released three singles, ‘Lovely Lady Rock’, ‘California Blues’ and ‘Gotta Be A Winner’. He’s also made three solo LPs including my favourite, ‘Blue Steel’. They both appeared on my radio show years ago and are worth checking out. Last but not least, a big happy birthday to my fab minder Liz (the Power) Evans. I’d better not say how old, mind! Keep your music news coming or send me your demo and I’ll review it. ART IN FOCUS This month the focus is on an exhibition that marks the centenary of the Battle of Mametz Wood, one of the most significant and bloody battles fought by the Welsh Soldiers in the First World War. Now embedded within Welsh national identity, this battle has come to represent the bravery and sacrifice of the Welsh troops in this war. This heroic ideal was captured in an iconic painting by Christopher Williams entitled ‘The Welsh Division at the Battle of Mametz Wood’, commissioned by David Lloyd George in 1916, which starts as the focal point of the exhibition and is brutal in its entirety. ‘War’s Hell’: a fitting title, is on show till 4th September and explores the works of artists and poets who were inspired whilst serving in this battle. Artists, such as Robert Graves and David Jones, share their first hand experiences with the world. This exhibition not only explores the works of these witnesses, but others who have responded to it since. ‘War’s Hell’ is attempting to show how the battle continues to resonate with people today and is not easy viewing, but definitely worth it. On Saturday 23rd July you could win a prize by creating your own depiction of a scene in Porthcawl. Top award £500, second prize £300, third prize £200. Winners displayed at Kooywood Gallery, Museum Place, Cardiff. Taking part in Art Challenge is easy; complete an entry form and pay £10.00, see below. This includes entry to the competition, your work being displayed on the Art Challenge Wales online exhibition with the opportunity to sell your work and be exhibited in Cardiff. You can see last year’s entries, winners and sales along with all the news and presentations on the website. As well as painting and drawing, last year we had entrants who used fabric, felt, collage and installation - which was great to see, so as long as your artwork is started and finished on the day and is less that 1m x 2m sq then we would look forward to your entry! For more information on how to enter go to www.artchallengewales.co.uk or search on Facebook for ‘Arts Challenge Wales’. Alternatively, ring the organiser below. The Challenge is devised and sponsored by Abacus Assurance Financial Services. Ring Philip Vaughan for more information, 01656 772222 or email info@artchallengewales.co.uk
MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR The choir has participated in several events during recent months. Recently the choir sang at The Mayors Civic Service of Thanksgiving for Councillor John McCarthy. Then on the 17th of May we sang at the Town Twinning Reception for guests from Waldsassen. On Friday 10th June, we held our Annual Concert - supported by an enthusiastic Pencoed Primary School Choir. There was also a piano solo by Mr Phil Stinton, and two solos sung by Nathaniel Stinton. During the interval a cheque for £500 was presented to Pencoed Comprehensive by Mrs Mairwen Whittaker Chair of the Choir to Ms S Sarjeant (Head teacher of Pencoed Primary School) and Councillor J McCarthy (Mayor of Pencoed and Chair of Governors for Pencoed Primary School), for the school’s Sensory Area, the choirs designated charity for 2015/16. A big thank you to all our sponsors for their generosity. Why don’t you come along and listen to one of our rehearsals? There is much laughter and no tears, well only a few sometimes from Alec but he soon recovers! We meet at Pencoed Bowls Club on a Thursday evening 19:15 to 21:15. Or you can contact us on midglamorganmixedchoir@outlook.com or phone 07866810579. Follow us on Facebook. Tony Esmond Vice Chair/Press Officer

Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW I’m going to digress – slightly – from the world of film this month to mention the publication of my new whodunit novel, “The Tidal Road Mystery”. It came about by chance, when, in the summer of 2014, I had a short holiday in Devon and stayed in a cottage near to a tidal road. The sight of a road flooding twice a day gave me an idea for a story, and I decided that one of the main characters in the book, Godfrey Sanderson, should be a retired cameraman who rapidly becomes embroiled in a murder mystery in which he is the chief suspect! He seeks help from a neighbour, a reclusive ex-Fleet Street crime reporter, Erwin Graham, and, together with Erwin’s gipsy partner Belle, the trio set out to solve the crime, whilst Godfrey expects to be arrested at any minute. For lovers of whodunits, this has been written along the classic lines of having an array of suspects, with the denouement held in the lounge of a country house, where everyone has been gathered together to hear Erwin’s solution and for the culprit to be revealed. The Kindle version is scheduled for publication in June/July 2016, paperback edition to follow. Ring or text if you’d like to order a copy. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY In addition to some great presentations, we also held our annual Clyne Jones Trophy Competition, which was the last of the season and was for digital images only. Members could enter three images, with the winner being the person having the highest aggregate of their two best scoring images. Rob Mitchell skillfully judged the competition, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner was Geoffrey Baker for ‘Calm before the Storm’ and ‘Feeding Time’, which both scored maximum points giving him a total of 40 points. Second place was awarded to Glyn Edmunds for ‘A Stare from Jane’ and ‘Circle of Life’ with a total of 39 points. Third place with 38 points was shared between David Jones and Richard Craze. Congratulations to Geoffrey for winning the competition and a big thank you to all who participated for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. Although our season has now ended until September, we will still be meeting for field trips. We will also have an exhibition in the Grand Pavilion from 8th to 14th August, so come along and see some of our work. We welcome new members, so if you have an interest in photography, join us on Thursday evenings. POEMS CANDLESTON’S CASTLE PEACH PIE GHOST
On entering Candleston Castle on Sunday around 4 o’clock, I will tell you the myth and mystery I was about to unlock. I was immediately hurtled back in time, and found myself in the bowels of the castle’s kitchenwhich was the colour of lime. I see The Kitchen staff scurrying about their roles, waltzing skilfully around each other without spilling any bowls. Surprisingly they notice me so I observe and listen as they tirelessly work ever so diligently. Two young maids whisper by Inglenook large fireplace where above from pewter hooks hang pheasants, rabbits and squirrels. They speak about a ghost called Miss Mary Chestnut who went to pick peaches from the castle orchid where she was abducted by a little tinker who made magic potions and sold for writers and thinkers. A horseback search party scanned woods, trees and water wells, she was never found which was so tragic, but on a fence found her wicker basket. It was the castle’s ritual custom for all kitchen staff, they may have one quarter of peach pie at 4.15 on first day of May Now I will amend the myth about Mary Chestnut’s disappearance. How do I know? Pray tell you ask? For I am Marys Chestnut’s ghost and on the first of May make my annual appearance. I ran off to London, but not to seek fame or fortune but for a better life away from my work at the castle where constant struggle and drudgery. I married Royalty and became a Dame, and successful writer, sadly both husband and I died in the Great Fire of London. Started in Pudding Lane. Why do I appear back at Cantleston Castle on the 1 st of May you must wonder? Obviously it’s because I always return for my entitlement quarter of peach pie. Alun Davies, Porthcawl
A WIDOWS SONG
So few the years we walked together, But oh how rich and deep our love With our faces turned to heaven You were my gift from God above Bound in a love which is eternal By cords of Father, Spirit, Son Hand in hand and heart to heart joined Gladly did we serve as one.
Seaside News | 54
The love we shared is still up-springing From God’s heart daily renewed No more need I fear to lose you My treasure, hid with Christ in God Daily heal my hurt, My Father, Give peace and joy for each new day Sharing love with those who sorrow Walking with you all the way Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
PINK MIST
He was my mate as well as being the best patrol lead scout, I followed him, his map reading skills & sense of direction were great, He was the leader; I was his wireless operator and his buddy, We were both armed with M16 rifles, be it in the jungle of Columbia, in the deserts of Oman, Northern Ireland, The Falklands, Iraq 1 & 2, Kosovo and finally Afghanistan. We were joined when required by a cord and a handset, I followed him mile after mile, day after day, slogging it out, Through all types of weather, head down and arse up, bergans on our backs. When we rested he always made sure that I got some scoff and a brew, We were a team, chums, buddies, we were inseparable, Until that day when he trigged off an I.E.D He instantly became ‘Pink Mist’ I was blown backwards, Then I realised that at long last we had become one, I had him in my face, my eyes, my mouth, even under my shamag Even now I can still taste him in my mouth when I have a nightmare, The patrol medic kept me alive, but could not help my mate. I woke up in the base hospital, then a casivac flight back to the UK. He is still with me, he is in my dreams, in my brain, and he is still looking after me, He might now just be ‘Pink Mist,’ but he is still my mate, And we will never be separated; we were closer even more than a married couple, Indeed our friendship has lasted longer than both my marriages, And he is still my friend and my leader; he goes where one day I will follow, We are still joined together with friendship that is stronger than a cord, handset, scoff and a brew. We were, and still are brothers and pilgrims, until we meet again in Valhalla. Bob Vincent, Porthcawl Dedicated to the memory of S/Sgt John Richard ‘Dusty’ Miller. The Royal Anglian Regiment, known as ‘The Vikings.’
CHRIS PACKHAM HAS AUTISM Chris Packham has Autism, What does that mean to me? A name, a face, “celebrity”Someone out there for all to see.
Chris Packham has Autism, Let’s turn it on it’s head. This is no world of black and white, Where everything is taken red. Chris Packham has Autism, Is it a syndrome or disease? That causes all his brain to freeze, Or is he sometimes “ill at ease”? Chris Packham has Autism And this is just my view That when you’re down and feeling blue, There’s a little bit of it in you. Don’t label it as sick or bad, Include and help him just a tad, Give him the space - he is not madTo life’s rich tapestry he’ll add. Chris Packham has Autism And this is what I think Don’t fear, embrace it, give him love We’ll keep him in the pink. Will Edwards, Porthcawl
EMOTIONAL RAIN
Rain makes you feel sad, Rain makes you feel Yuk, You only like the rain, If you’re a fish or a duck. Rain makes you wet and cold, Rain clouds make it feel dark, Children don’t want to go outside, Or to play in the park. Your smile is no longer there, But in place there’s a frown, The rain makes you feel unhappy, Your emotions feeling down. Rain brings lots of illnesses, When you’re infirm and old, With flu, viruses and pneumonia, Or just a common cold. We only see the negatives, It’s just the way we think, But we need the rain to fill reservoirs, With lots of water to drink. David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend

CARE FOR ME
Well I used to be a nurse But nursing’s not for me Changing all those catheters And mopping poo and wee
Is it me you see held tightly in your arms Replete from the love we made Or is it the image of a loved one, lost forever But held fast in your mind I know I cannot win, but still compelled to try, My love for you will linger, and endure the test of time I cannot take another, to love me all my own I’ll help with your lost love if you will help with mine Jennifer Coleman, Pyle
I’m hanging up my bandage And my plasters in the drawer To dress another ulcer I’ll happily no more Another row I’ll not be subject A mistake I’ll never make Another brow I’ll never mop Or emotion no more fake Well goodbye to all my patients Cos I’m parking up my bike My bones and muscles aching And I’m fast losing my sight

MAY, 2016
The season now is over, All kit is washed and packed, Boots cleaned and hung in the garage to dry, This is the final act. No more rugby for four whole months, Not domestically, at least. But rugby is now a worldwide game, We’ll be ready for a summer feast. Down to the Antipodes Wales must go, To the land of the Long White Cloud, To match themselves against the ‘Blacks’ It’s will be a really tough tour, brawd. We haven’t beaten the buggers since ’55, At home or far away And I don’t see us doing this time Which is something I’m sad to say. But truth must be faced, what e’er we feel, They are simply too good for us, Hearts say “yea” but heads say “nay”, Let’s just dream of wins glorious. Brian Morris, Kenfig Hill.

a handicap of three had a 140 total, with Chris Evans in second place on 142. The competition was followed by the draw for the Club Championship knockout stage, in the bar. Chris Evans will begin his defence against Kevin Somerville. The draw also threw up the juicy prospect of a match between Ian Booth, who has been champion before and the Welsh Under 14 Champion, Tom Peet. All of Ian’s eight wins were before Tom was born and he is 38 years his junior! Colin Wood

The season is now in full swing and our junior teams are competing against other local clubs at the U10’s, U11’s and U13’s age groups. Training nights have been very well attended and our second Skills Cap Grading Night & Presentation has taken place. Congratulations to all that moved cap levels (practice at home is paying off). NATALIE BALES WINS THE ENGLISH OPEN CLAY TARGET SHOOTING Natalie Bales, from South Cornelly, added the National Skeet English Open title to her growing list of achievements. This is the first time this major British title has been won by a lady and very possibly the first win by a Welsh person. Natalie produced the goods and shot at, and hit a further 37 targets to secure her historic win. Natalie went to school at St Clare’s in Porthcawl, and graduated from Cardiff University with a BSc (hons) in Physics, and now works for the NHS as a Medical Physicist. PORTHCAWL RUNNERS NEWS In April London Marathon fever hit the running community and we had four representatives out for the Club; and they all did themselves and the Club proud by running personal bests. Julian Maine ran 3hours 17 minutes and his wife Romana topped the Welsh rankings in her age category running 3 hours 55 minutes. Nicola Thomas, who had the club place this year, ran a fantastic 3 hours 50 minutes (all three can be seen showing off their hard earned medals). Rhodri Harris ran his first marathon in an amazing debut time of 3 hours 21 minutes. Looking forward to the summer we have many walks, runs and social events planned and the atmosphere at our AGM was one of excitement as we have many new members joining the old ones and there is a passion for team participation. To this end we have joined the other local running clubs in a new Bridgend Summer League of races which kicked off with the Cwm Ogwr 5-miler on May 14th. Mike Atkins, one of our members, suffered a stroke recently, and we are pleased to report he is making good progress in recovery. Club events have raised over £500 for the Stroke Association the charity that has assisted in Mike’s rehabilitation. He is to be the official cheerleader for the Rack Raids relay event (13 stage relay event in Gwent that the Club is participating in) on 5th June. Will Edwards, Assistant Coach

ROTARY BRIDGEND SUPPORT DRAGON RIDE The Rotary Club of Bridgend recently supported the ‘L’ETAPE’ Wales - helping to raise thousands of pounds for their local charities 2016/2017. The UK’s most prestigious Sportive returned for its 13th year in 2016! The South Wales event once again started from the picturesque Margam Park, having moved there successfully in 2012. Two years later saw the introduction of a mammoth Dragon Devil distance, which once again was part of the offering for 2016. The Gran Fondo had taken in approximately 2,905m of climbing, passing through the beautiful Brecon Beacons with the Medio Fondo approximately 2,060m. The Dragon Devil was certainly not for the faint hearted. There was very limited numbers of places available for this option, so those who were keen would need to have grit, stamina and a ‘sense of fun’. Those lucky enough to get a place would be well rewarded with an incredibly stunning cycling route which took in the ‘Rhigos’, ‘Black Mountain’ and the ‘Devil’s Elbow’ - the Dragon ride’s signature climbs - with the addition of the ‘Devil’s Staircase’, a climb with a 15% gradient and elevation of 480m. The event was spectacular, raising many thousands of pounds for The Rotary Club of Bridgend’s local charities 2016/2017. Major (Retd) Wayne B Morgan MBE Mob: 07789 713430
PORTHCAWL TOWN UNDER 14’S FOOTBALL
At the start of the football season Porthcawl Town Under 14’s were kitted out in new strips after their team scored a shirt sponsorship deal. Players at Porthcawl Town Blues Under 14’s have been sporting smart blue & red shirts, thanks to a donation from two local business owners. Ben Hapgood & Sons – a local plumber and Matt Hapgood – owner of Flow Surf & Skate, very kindly bought the whole new kits for the Under 14 team. The teams manager, Micheal Pearson, said “Flow Surf & Skate, an independent Porthcawl shop on New Road sells an excellent range of the best brands in action sports. Also Ben Hapgood & Sons – a local plumber is highly recommended for all plumbing & heating work in the area. This sponsorship deal means so much to us and we are very grateful to both Ben and Matt.” Porthcawl Town Blues had a very successful season finishing as runners up in the Port Talbot League and winners of the League cup beating Afan Lido 4 – 0 in the final. It has been a fantastic season for all the team and everyone involved and we look forward to another great season next year. The team is shown celebrating with the cup.
