Old Park Farm 10 Year Anniversary

Dear Editor, I’m a pilot at Old Park Farm, just outside Pyle. We had our 10 year anniversary barbecue at the weekend. We all had a great time, raised lots of money and had lots of visiting aircraft. I’m hoping you’ll be able to print this write up in Seaside News for us? I’ve attached some photos, the air ambulance shot taken by Stu Smith, the group of pilots taken by Melanie Armstrong and the aircraft picture by me, Deb Protheroe. The script below was written by Leia Fee. I think everyone at the field will be chuffed to bits to have a bit of coverage. On Sunday 7th June, the pilots of Old Park Farm, near Margam, celebrated 10 successful years of flying from the site with a charity barbecue and family day. The charities selected were the Wales Air Ambulance and the Taibach children’s charity SNAC (the Special Needs Activity Club). Over £700 was raised in total from activities including a raffle, cake sales and air ambulance gifts. Visitors in a wide variety of light aircraft and microlights flew in from as far afield as Staffordshire to celebrate the anniversary of the airfield which is owned and operated by the Williams family and was first started as an active airstrip by Ken Evans and Gary Waters in 2005. Landing fees were waived for the day in favour of an all-you-can-eat fundraising barbeque and many locally based pilots also took to the air to give neighbours, friends and family members their first taste of the lighter end of flying. The day was topped off perfectly with a thank you flyby by the air ambulance, on their way back from another lifesaving flight. (Article by Leia Fee) Deb Protheroe

Dear Editor, Are there others like me who are fed up with recycling littering our streets. We all want to help the environment and act responsible but it seems the good work we do is undone by the very thing that should be helping us - blue bags! This past winter has seen high winds and this has caused endless problems on collection days, with blue bags blown around the streets and the contents strewn all over the neighbourhood. Some of my neighbours work and put out they’re recycling before they leave, so they miss the scene of waste flying around ending up in the front gardens of their neighbours. I have spent this morning collecting up the items and trying to keep them in the bag ready for collection and feeling satisfied with my efforts I was to be disappointed when they were collected the refuse collectors left a plastic box next to my empty bins (see photo). Why? I feel these bags are not suitable and something needs to be done to prevent all our good work being undone. Perhaps others may have experienced the same problems and would like to contact their local council to ask if they can intervene and speak to the company whom they awarded the contract to? Dear Editor, I feel I must respond to PCSO Kyle Maiden’s comments contained in his last months article in Seaside News. Firstly he says “Marlas Estate North Cornelly, which is proven to be a neglected area by the government”. That information is some 12 yrs out of date. V2C, Commuities First (Welsh Government) BTCV, Groundwork, CADDT, Family Employment Iniative, and others, have poured miliions of £s into the estate. Work training programme have given young people the opportunity of work experience and real jobs. Older people benefitted from schemes aimed at them also. Today there is Caddt Training & Youth Centre on Gibbons Way, Marlas - a thriving facility. The area has been transformed - V2C cuts the grass regularly, streets are clean & tidy, I even have volunteers picking up litter, headed by Mark Parry of Gibbons Way. V2C provided a MUGA, Multi Use Games Area. In the last few weeks BCBC have successfully undertaken The Safe Routes to School Scheme, costing hundreds of thousands of pounds. Like every large estate there are pockets of deprivation, but this estate has truly been transformed. Originally just 5 streets gave the estate its Commuities First opportunities, by them being earmarked as deprived, now it is not, its a good decent place to live. CPEC, Cornelly Public Events Committee, now CADDT, Cornelly And Distict Development Trust, have organised village fetes on Marlas for years, and will do so again in September this year. I urge people to drive around the estate and see for their selves! Secondly, PCSO Kyle Maiden said “Marlas is a hot spot for antisocial behaviour” that is out of date too. PC Neville Evans, Sgt Mike Davies, folllowed by Sgt Jason Jenkins - between them have changed that. The last several PACT meetings have been told that anti-social behaviour is no longer a problem on Marlas. Last Tuesday, June 9th, that message was repeated at a Partnership Meeting on Marlas attended by all partners involved on the estate, and by South Wales Police themselves! Hot dogs and bacon rolls will be freshly made on site, accompanied by a selection of hot and cold drinks. For new visitors to The Burrows we will have information packs/ brochures available, with our fabulous team available to help and guide you around the Nursery. As well as exceptional childcare, we offer a Breakfast Club, After School Club and Holiday Club for school age children. We have recently had two very good inspections from ESTYN and CSSIW. Corneli Primary News Travelling to school by bike or scooter is now safer thanks to improvements made through Safe Routes in Communities funding. The Sustrans Big Pedal initiative has encouraged children to take this healthy option and to park securely in our smart new bike shelters is fantastic. So good are they that we held an opening ceremony where, despite rain, our Bike Crew team cut the ribbon. Thanks go to all who have made this possible and to those who attended our opening. Rain led to the postponement of our Junior Sports Day, however, all our athletes did finally get to demonstrate their skills watched by their parents. Skilful too were our netball team at the Newton Primary Tournament where they had a really enjoyable day. A visit to the Liberty Stadium as part of the Osprey’s Schools Programme, was exciting for years 5 and 6 children. They completed activities and got to sit in the dug-outs next to the pitch which was especially thrilling! Year 3 children were the beneficiaries of a Rotary Club ‘Kids Out’ trip to the Gower Heritage Park. They had an amazing day and we are so grateful to the club for their generosity. Porthcawl Comprehensive School Summer is fast approaching, and at last we’ve reached the end of the exam season! Pupils have excelled themselves again with their hard work and dedication, and as a school, we have moved heaven and earth in our efforts to support them, holding extra breakfast classes, after school classes, lunch time and even holiday classes! Thank goodness I don’t have to pay our teachers by the hour! The Annual Leavers’ Ceremony took place in school on 23rd June. Senior students have now left with their Porthcawl mug, a small reminder of their time with us. The Sixth Form Ball was held at the Hilton Hotel and was a very glamorous evening indeed and a highlight of the year for many. The School’s Annual Golf Day will be held at the Grove Golf Club on Thursday 9th July, with tee off times from 12.30pm. Pupils in nursery have been very excited lately! After waiting patiently for 30 days they have hatched four ducklings in an incubator; Pip, Fluffy, Hatch and Donald are Appleyard Calling Ducks. They are growing very quickly and Nursery has enjoyed looking after them, changing their water and giving them food. They are going to the Pet Shop in Pyle once they get too big for their home in school. In the incubator we now have 6 chicken eggs, Nursery hope to see some chicks soon! We still have plenty to look forward to this term – Ecoweek, Sports Day, Summer Fete, Trips and so much more. It is sure to be a busy end of term! N Pryce Head teacher

This month has been really exciting for our year 4 and 5 pupils because for the second year running we have won the ‘Smile’ song competition run by Bridgend College! The theme for this year was aspiring to be the best you can be. The lyrics and music were written by a group of our budding musicians and ‘Be all you can be’ was born. We found out we had won just before half term and a few weeks ago twenty of our pupils headed over to the recording studios at Bridgend College to record the song and film the video. The finished song and video will premiere at a special event at the National Botanical Gardens at the end of June and the song will be available on itunes soon after. We hope it follows the success of last year’s song ‘Bee Generation’ which raised money for IBRA and was played on Bridge FM. Congratulations to Miss Bowen and all the pupils involved in both the song and the video. Afon Y Felin News It is wonderful to read Madeline Moon’s tweet, “Congratulations to staff, pupils and parents of Afon y Felin for a great inspection report. Teamwork shining through”. As a result of the follow-up inspection in May, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education and Training in Wales is removing the school from the list of schools requiring significant improvement. Everybody has worked very hard to achieve this status, including the children. We are very fortunate that Ms Williams has agreed to stay on to continue our growth and improvement as a school. The full report is available to read on Estyn’s website. Thanks must be said to the PFA, who raised enough money to send the whole school to Folly Farm. All the children and staff enjoyed themselves immensely. The PFA also raised £128 from their recent cake sale, and the summer fayre is planned for July 4th. There will be many attractions, and a car boot sale on the field, please come and support them if you can. Bright Future For Local Schools I’d like to congratulate Afon-y-Felin Primary School for the outstanding progress that has been made since the school received its last full inspection report in October 2013. The Inspection team had made five recommendations for areas that needed attention, and I’m delighted to say that when inspectors re-visited in May they were very pleased with everything they saw. Either ‘very good’ or ‘strong’ progress has been made to address those five key recommendations, and as a result the school is no longer under Estyn monitoring. Everyone who visits Afon-y-Felin can see that the children are thriving and happy thanks to a dedicated team of staff who have worked tirelessly to achieve so much progress. The school now aims to maintain that momentum, and their ambitions could be furthered by a potential federation with Cefn Cribwr Primary School. The two schools have been working closely and successfully together for the last year and believe the time is right to make this arrangement stronger. Federation wouldn’t mean the two schools merging – they’d still be separate with their own characters and communities, but expertise across the two schools would be shared to ensure the best for all children. pupils and certainly something for them to remember with pride. We would like to sincerely thank Edward O’Brian for delivering first aid skills training to year 3 pupils. Thanks must also go to Father Craig for organising the year 4 Tag festival. We were delighted to take part with other local schools and the children thoroughly enjoyed a fun afternoon of sportsmanship! We have also enjoyed welcoming our new families in recent Early Years transition sessions. They have already met the Gruffalo in our woodland I am told! Preparations are underway for our annual year 6 leaver’s presentation. Always an emotional evening dedicated to the eldest of our pupils ‘moving up’ to the next phase of their education. Porthcawl Library The build up to the summer holidays has been a particularly busy time here at St Clare’s School. As the exam season drew to a close for our senior school pupils it was time to look ahead to an exciting summer for them. At the time of Seaside News going to press our Year 11 and Year 13 pupils will be enjoying their end of year trip to Barcelona, where they will be putting their language skills to good use and embracing Spanish culture in the sunshine. We hope that there will be big smiles all round in August when Results Day comes round. In the Prep School the good weather has allowed our pupils to be out and about for a range of sporting fixtures in tennis, cricket, rounders and athletics. Our Year 5 and 6 cricket teams beat off competition from local schools in the Bridgend U11 Cricket Tournament held at Newbridge Fields, and both our boys’ and girls’ teams are now through to the Regional Finals. West Park Pupils Getting Active We have been a very healthy school this past month with outdoor activities galore. Our annual sports day will have taken place by the time you read this. All of the pupils have been practising their events and most importantly encouraging each other to try their best - great team spirit! The Library will be buzzing with stories, activities and crafts for children under 1. All children finishing the challenge get a certificate and a medal. Year 6 had a successful trip to Belgium early in June. This year, we twinned with Llancarfan Primary for the visit. The trip included excursions to the WW1 Cemeteries, the Menin Gate, Bellewaerde Park and a chocolate factory shop! A good time was had by all. There were lots of other trips too. Year 1 went to Caerphilly Castle and Year 2 tested their skills at Techniquest. Year 3 had a fossil hunt at Southerndown and explored Newton Church courtesy of Father Craig. Year 4 went off to Cardiff Museum and then onto Gamelan at St. David’s Hall. Our junior children took part in our annual Promenade Run, which raised in excess of £1,400. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the Nepal Earthquake Fund. Well done to Elisha Martin and Olivia Davies - who did themselves proud representing school at the annual Library Book Quiz final which was held in Maesteg. Colleagues from other schools visited our Foundation Phase for a Learning Walk and were very envious of the experiences and facilities the school provides. Cynffig Comprehensive News Hello again. It has been another busy and productive month at Cynffig. Our Year 11 and Year 13 pupils have, as always, continued to attend every lesson throughout the examination period to ensure that their outcomes are everything that they deserve. In the lead-up to this, too, so many teachers have gone far beyond what might be expected to come in and work through their holidays with pupils, striving to support in every way possible. This year, we have been delighted to see even more of our sixth form pupils impress interview panels at university that an unprecedented number have been offered ‘unconditional’ places to study. We wish them every success, and look forward to the rewards of all our pupils’ efforts. Learning is fun as well as hard work, of course: the Welsh Department recently supported many Key Stage 3 pupils in developing their language skills whilst immersing themselves in Welsh culture and intrepid outdoor activities during their weekend stay at Glanllyn. It was a testament to everyone’s energy, spirit and positive attitude that the torrential (June!) rain had no dampening effect whatsoever – and where better to polish your Welsh than having a great time in a canoe?! Newyddion Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr News Our news for the past few weeks revolves mainly around sports! 40 pupils from the juniors took part in the Bridgend Swimming Gala – everybody did well & Megan Froley and Emilia Jones will now represent us in the final on July 12th. Congratulations to Megan Froley also on being selected as a member of the Wales National basketball squad. Year 4 pupils took part in the Urdd cricket tournament in Newbridge Fields recently & had a fantastic day in the sun! Year 3 & 4 also enjoyed a fun sports day at Bridgend Recreation Centre and were able to meet with pupils from across the cluster. News New System Set To Boost Health And Social Care An all-new £6.7m system for improving health and social care services is being developed for Wales – and Bridgend County Borough Council has been chosen as the lead local authority for the project. The Community Care Information Solution will bring together patient records and other essential details from a variety of different stand-alone systems, integrating them into one national system that will make it possible for information to be shared instantly and confidentially between different health and social care providers. It looks set to hugely improve the existing services that local people receive. For example, in the past it might have been some time before a home carer was informed that an elderly householder had been taken unexpectedly into hospital. But under the new system, not only will the home carer be made aware, they’ll also be informed when the householder is about to be discharged from hospital so they can get everything ready for them at home. This new system has massive potential for ensuring that health and social care services work together in a far more effective manner all across Wales, especially in situations where people need to use emergency or out-of-hours services – look out for more developments soon. New Independent Health Watchdog Needed The current system for ensuring the quality and safety of healthcare services in Wales is not fit for purpose and that Healthcare Inspectorate Wales should be scrapped and replaced with a new, independent and more robust system. We also want to: • appoint a chief inspector for hospitals and healthcare; • support staff and patients by introducing mechanisms for whistleblowing which would encourage a stronger culture of openness and transparency; • reform the complaints procedure to ensure greater independence and restore the trust of patients and their families; • introduce clinically-led and peer-reviewed inspections with significant patient input. The latest round of shocking reports on care within our NHS reveals a complete failure of all the systems that should be in place to protect our most vulnerable people. The current system for ensuring the quality and safety of healthcare is not fit for purpose. We need a more proactive and robust system of inspections, with a new health watchdog that is fully independent of the Welsh Government. Our watchdog would be led by a new chief inspector for hospitals and healthcare. He or she could carry out targeted inspections in response to quality concerns and routine inspections of all hospitals on a regular basis. Porthcawl Town Council News Make a date in your calendar for this year’s Porthcawl Summer Festival on Saturday 25th July between 11.00am and 6.00pm. The theme is ‘Pirates’ fancy dress and on the day Pirates might want to check out the 75 foot inflatable Pirates’ Galleon at Cosy Corner. There will be lots of fun and activity in the town including craft stalls, an Italian market and a steel drum band playing on the seafront. Various problems have been cited regarding the proposal to introduce residents permit parking zones in streets in and around Esplanade Avenue, Porthcawl. The number of permits issued would far exceed the available parking spaces, as many properties in the area are multiple occupancy flats. Nottage & Rest Bay PACT News At the latest PACT meeting held on May 5th the following issues were discussed and taken forward as priorities for the next eight weeks. Anti-Social Behaviour Operation ‘BLUE TEXAS’ has resulted in patrols being carried out in hot spot areas and alcohol being seized. The ASB patrols will continue throughout the summer months. Environmental Issue - Littering Concerns were raised to the amount of litter in the area. Parking - Westfield Crescent The neighbourhood policing team have been patrolling the area and have issued PACT warning notices and spoken to some residents giving suitable advice. News NEW Scheme To Kick-Start The Porthcawl Regeneration A new scheme to kick-start the Porthcawl regeneration is on the blocks. Developers are in discussion with BCBC about the possibility of building homes on Salt Lake but there is also to be provision for a leisure facility, a health centre and a church. There is a long way to go and I think we’d all like to know more. The council has to be sure that any development fulfils at least two objectives – that it enhances Porthcawl, both as a seaside resort and great place to live, but also that it gives council taxpayers who own most of the assets some bang for their buck. After 15 years of limbo, it is good news that a national house builder sees potential in the town and in this particular site. Salt Lake adjoins the newly refurbished harbour, which is hopefully going to be complemented by the Porthcawl Maritime Centre. Harbourside News We are making significant progress on securing a Maritime Centre for Porthcawl. We are working closely with Bridgend County Borough Council and have agreed collaboration agreements with Bridgend College and Swansea University’s College of Biosciences in providing a mixed use, flagship building. The Maritime Centre, called Harbourside, will house both a real time ‘learning zone’ and a Coastal Science and Discovery Centre. The centre will also act as a hub providing support to existing, new community and private sector investment and will expand the choice of watersports, community wellbeing and maritime heritage available in the area. We are now ready to design the community facilities side, particularly those for seniors. We welcome the views and aspirations of local residents, and we are looking for volunteers in several areas of the project, including Coastal Outreach, with events scheduled for this summer. News We Need To Follow North Wales

Two Birthday’s & A 21 Gun Salute

The Welsh Government has moved quickly to deal with the crisis engulfing a North Wales hospital, but it’s difficult not to contrast it with the foot dragging, obfuscation and downright stonewalling from ministers engaged over a similar care scandal at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. The similarity was not lost on the families of patients who died in the Princess of Wales, some of whom came to make their feelings known outside the National Assembly as an emergency debate on Glan Clwyd went ahead. It cannot be right that when a health system fails that those delivering services carry all the blame while executives who are highly paid to be responsible for overseeing good health care are left in charge and trusted to clean up the mess they create. Time will tell if they’re up to the task. But if they aren’t the Welsh Government has to act as decisively as they are in North Wales, and conduct a wholesale clear out of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg board. The last thing we need is a local health service where those in charge believe they can act without fear of consequence.

Most of us get one birthday and, if we are lucky, a cake with candles to blow out. The Queen has two birthdays and 21 gun salutes. The Monarch having a personal and an official birthday stems from the time of King Edward V11 who, annoyed at getting wet Trooping the Colour on his birthday in November, introduced a birthday in the UK in June when the weather was kinder. The official birthday date follows the sun and is in different months around the Commonwealth. The 21 gun salute stems back to the tradition of Royal Navy ships firing a seven gun salute when entering a port, demonstrating the benign nature of the visit. The shore battery would reply with a 14 gun salute to welcome the ship, making a 21 gun barrage. The rules of the salute change depending where it takes place. If in a Royal Park you add a further 20 rounds making a 41 gun salute. Whatever the number it was wonderful to be part of the birthday salute at the Pier Head in Cardiff. Even in the drizzle the military bands, the reverberation of the guns around the buildings and the pageantry made a wonderful birthday tribute. No cake though.

Members of the Porthcawl Aspergers and Autism Community are hoping to raise awareness thanks to a donation from local estate agents Payton Jewell Caines. The group, who meet weekly at the Coast Café in Porthcawl on a Monday at 10am, are self-funding. The donation of £250.00 will allow them to organise an awareness event and fund a workshop for adults with aspergers syndrome. Chairperson Sue Bridger says: “We meet as a group on a weekly basis to offer each other support and friendship. Through Christian Eyes One of the big questions today is, “Is there such a thing as absolute truth?” “Is there a universal truth?” Pilate asked Jesus this question when he asked, “What is truth?” (John 18 v 38) Here are my thoughts on this. Jesus said he was the truth (John 14 v 6) but what does that mean? The word truth and reality are the same in the Greek language so Jesus was claiming to be reality. It is at least reality in the sense that he is eternal. Scientists believe that one day everything will come to an end. An example is that they say the sun will burn out. So if Jesus is eternal and the World as we know it is not then surly Jesus is the ultimate truth and reality, because he has no end. Therefore, the big question of the day, being, “is there an absolute truth or reality?” then I would have to say yes and I believe it is tied up with Jesus who is an eternal reality. I am not suggesting that what’s around us is not real – of course not. But I am suggesting that eternal realities are more ultimate than temporary realties. Neil Harvey

Trinity’s Rest After two decades of support to disabled people in local communities, Trinity Care & Support is celebrating its 20th Anniversary AGM with a new venture - Trinity’s Rest! TCS was awarded £55,000 by The Rest charity to buy a brand new, fully fitted holiday caravan on Trecco Bay - wheelchair accessible, with a wet room and hoist. The van will be called ‘Trinity’s Rest’, a legacy to the good name of ‘The Rest’, and will offer families of all abilities the chance for a seaside holiday in Porthcawl with options of support from the TCS care service. As TCS looks back at it’s achievements, we are also excited as we look to what the future might bring and welcome new members to join us in Trecco on 14th July at the opening ceremony for our new van (3.30-4.30pm). The formal business of the AGM will take place in Trinity Church, 6pm. The guest speaker is Tony Garthwaite, Senior Fellow at the Welsh Institute for Health and Social Care. Porthcawl U3A News The Porthcawl U3A Study Day, held at the Hi Tide, proved a great success with 15 various U3A groups from as far away as Pembroke, Llandovery and Newport attending. ‘Meeting the challenges of leadership’ was the intriguing subject addressed by four very different leaders who all face demanding challenges from contrasting organizations and institutions. The first of the two morning speakers was Dame Rosemary Butler AM, the Presiding Officer at the National Assembly for Wales who has a powerful role over the 60 AM’s in the Senedd but her talk included many personal stories. Paul Canning from Wales Air Ambulance surprised everyone with details of this remarkable service which has three contemporary helicopters based in Caernarfon, Welshpool and Swansea. Its annual costs of £6 million is funded solely by public donations and it can attend an emergency anywhere in Wales within 20 minutes. After lunch John Walmsley, Principal of Atlantic College revealed the fascinating story of this international educational centre on our doorstep. Two engaging senior students also recounted their unusual experiences and future aspirations. The final talk on leadership was given by Colonel Lance Patterson, Deputy Commander 160 Brigade Brecon, who ended a rewarding day by explaining the complicated challenges found in the modern British Army. News From The Talbot We have begun new classes and group meetings over the past months, but it seems that there are still many who do not know where to find the Talbot Community Centre. We are located almost opposite the Post Office in Prince Road in a large imposing 100 year old building. For those who don’t know Kenfig Hill the monument at the top of Kenfig Hill is the start of Prince Road. Why not pop in and see us. The best days to visit are on Wednesdays and Fridays just before midday when you will find the hall prepared for lunch with tables covered in red polka dot tablecloths, small vases of seasonal flowers, and a flurry of activity. You could stay for lunch, take in the flavour of the event – pardon the pun – and become a member. You will find the Talbot Diner menu pinned to our notice board, or on our website www.talbotcc.co.uk. Every other week have our 100 club draw where members can win £30, £15 or £5. Once again the annual golf day at the Grove was very successful and raised well over two thousand pounds which enabled the club to donate one thousand pounds each to Prostate Cymru Wales and Target Ovarian Cancer. The Comancheros was the winning team with Francis Beynon from that team also winning the men’s longest drive. Many thanks to all those who supported the day, the Grove for the hospitality and David, Tony and Brian for their hard work and excellent organisation. Unfortunately the weather has meant that the car boot sale on Sundays at Porthcawl Rugby Club and the book sales in John Street have not been as successful, but they will continue through the summer when weather permits. There is still the vintage fair and classic car show at Porthcawl Rugby Club to look forward to on Saturday 1st August, with plenty of cars to see and things to do for all the family. The club is also holding a coffee morning in Trinity Church on Friday 3rd July, from 10am-12midday, to raise money to send disabled youngsters to the Bob Cook games. Splendours Of The South For most of this year we have enjoyed the appearance in the west of the brilliant planet Venus after sunset. This month, Venus will be joined to its left by Jupiter, as both dive towards the horizon and disappear behind the Sun. They will reappear in the morning sky during October. However, if you turn your attention southwards, you will see a fainter object which doesn’t twinkle. This is the ringed planet Saturn. Through even the smallest telescope, the rings are magnificent right now. I’m afraid it won’t get any higher in the sky because at present it’s travelling through the constellation of Scorpius, which is best seen from lower latitudes. Look to Saturn’s lower left to find the red giant star Antares, which is nearing the end of its life. Antares is truly enormous and if it was in our solar system its outer atmosphere would stretch almost as far as Jupiter. Scan carefully below the red star to find a large globular cluster which is easily visible in binoculars. The star cluster is called Messier 4 and consists of hundreds of thousands of stars almost as old as the Universe itself. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

FEATURES Porthcawl Coastguard Rescue Service

This is the first monthly update on the activities of Porthcawl Coastguard Rescue Team. Located on Locks Lane and having served the town for over 180 years, we are the local presence of HM Coastguard and are a specialist search, cliff and water rescue team. Currently comprising of seven volunteers, we provide 24 hour a day year round coverage for the coastline from the Kenfig River in the west to the Ogmore River in the east as well as providing back-up cover for our neighbouring stations in Port Talbot and Llantwit Major. In addition, we work closely with other organisations including the Police and Porthcawl Lifeboat. At present we have some volunteer vacancies on the team which we need to fill. Therefore if you are looking for both a challenging and rewarding interest that would require some commitment then please email your details to porthcawl. coastguard@inbox.com or feel free to pop along to our station on Locks Lane between 19:00 and 21:00 hours on Thursdays. We will soon be setting up social media sites to keep you informed of what is going on along your coastline. Mulligan Community Mulligan Community is a non-profit social enterprise set up to support families and individuals in Bridgend. Mulligan is a golfing term used to give a player a second chance. Coming soon to Bridgend is the MC Family Centre – it will home a variety of support groups and services all under one roof to provide vital facilities and support services specially tailored to combat poverty and social exclusion. Our line-up of organisations that support the MC Family Centre is growing daily and are listed on our website. New Hearing & Mobility Store Opens in Porthcawl

Porthcawl Inner Wheel News I wish to apologise for wrongly reporting last month that Branwen Rees was ordained in the Methodist Church, In fact, Branwen was ordained in the United Reform Church. In her absence Mary Emment-Lewis’ report on the International Inner Wheel Convention, held in Copenhagen, was read by Secretary Carol at the June meeting. Her report gave us a picture of the international aspect of Inner Wheel with delegates attending from as far away as India and Australia. In May seven members of the Porthcawl Club attended the District 15 International Service Rally in Cwmbran. Rotarian Alison Sutherland spoke about the charity LifeStraw. Alison gave a demonstration of the use of a LifeStraw, which is a portable filter that does not require running water, electricity, batteries, replacement parts or chemicals. Pure clean water with no bad taste is produced, effectively removing all bacteria and parasites. LifeStraws are now available to countries in need all over the world. It was a great experience to see a LifeStraw in action. Club members decided in June to donate money from our Charity Fund to Mercy Ships, Air Ambulance and Tŷ Ellis. It may have rained all day but it didn’t dampen the spirits of Porthcawl’s Mayor David Newton-Williams and consort Gaynor Williams, at the ribbon cutting ceremony of Porthcawl’s brand new Hearing and Mobility store in Lias Road (opposite the CoOp) on Saturday 13th June. On hand to give out glasses of Bucks Fizz to eager customers were Craig Hosken, Porthcawl Store Manager, Samantha Marchesi, Sales Director and Mark Moss, Chairman of Hearing and Mobility. Mark, who lives in Porthcawl and is very involved in the Porthcawl local business community, said “We’re very excited with this latest store opening, taking our total Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Sea Cadets Porthcawl Sea Cadets have been busy this year, not only preparing and launching their new powerboat in the water, but also gaining grants to fund sailing and adventure training activities. We received a grant from the Community Chest Fund to buy essential hiking equipment to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, and also a grant from the Dulverton Trust. This enabled us to buy 6 Laser Pico’s, which will allow us to teach sailing and power boating qualifications. As a result we now have cadets entering sailing and powerboat competitions throughout Wales, and the rest of the UK, with the hopes of winning district, area and national competitions. We wish all the competitors the best of luck in their respective fields! The next step for Porthcawl Sea Cadets is for us to gain RYA recognition, and become a fully-fledged governing body teaching establishment, in order for us to be able to offer fully accredited and professional qualifications and certificates, from our Porthcawl unit. Anyone can join between the ages of 10 -18 and we are always after adult instructors too if you are interested please come down to the unit on any given parade night Tues/ Friday 7pm until 9.30pm. Due to the President Sandra Davidson being in London for the NFWI Centenary Meeting, Sue Elworthy the Vice- President conducted the meeting following a warm welcome to everyone present. The business of the evening included: • A report on the GFWI Council Meeting. • Event details of the day trip to Gloucester and the Ascot Day charity day at the Star Inn, Treoes (friends of WI, in aid of The Tree of Hope charity). Both of these events are open to friends and families; but booking is essential. • For the Murder Mystery Evening to be held at the Hi-Tide, Porthcawl on 11th September members need to book at the July meeting. • The skittles fun evening will be held on 14th October. The guest speaker - Joyce James - took us on a delightful trip down memory lane in a quest to encourage members to write down their memories regarding her topic ‘Writing your Memoirs’. At the June meeting, President Nora welcomed members and referred to the considerable media coverage of the Centenary celebrations and events throughout the UK. Secretary Cynthia read the minutes for approval and read notices of upcoming events. The Speakers this evening were representatives from The Shaw Trust, a charity started in Wiltshire 30 years ago to help disabled and disadvantaged people to find work. To date hundreds of thousands have been helped. Government funding assists the charity and their 50 shops throughout the UK, the Porthcawl shop being one of seven in Wales, and the Neath shop the largest. The W.I. Centenary Annual Meeting was held at the Royal Albert Hall this month, when HM The Queen opened the meeting accompanied by the Princess Royal and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. At the Gwyn Hall, Neath a live screening was relayed onto a huge cinema screen. It was thrilling to watch, and plain to see that the royal ladies also enjoyed the informal and happy atmosphere of this unique occasion. Mynydd Cynffig WI The 9th of June saw the Mynydd Cynffig WI holding their monthly meeting in their usual venue - The Talbot Centre, Kenfig Hll. We had a good turn out of members, meeting chaired by Marjorie, minutes read by Enid our secretary. Details of forthcoming events were brought to the attention of the members. We are all looking forward to the Centenary Garden Party in Margam Orangery (an excuse to wear a hat perhaps). We have a quiz in the High Tide Porthcawl, An evening with Mark Evans in the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl, all on our door step. We are also looking forward to our annual trip in August to Hereford, we are hoping for fine weather that day. Our talk, on Dr William Price - a man of many talents, was given by Mr Dean Powell. It was interesting and informative, and was enjoyed by all. Next month our talk is on Patagonia - we might find some long lost relations. This talk will be given by Mr John Pearman. We brought the meeting to a close with tea and biscuits - well we are the WI as seen on TV! Christine Callaghanary

The speaker at our June meeting was John Sheen, and his talk was entitled ‘’Five Boys and a Pasty’. It was an hilarious account of the smells, sights and sensations of his childhood in Port Talbot. He brought back memories to many with his account of ‘Friday Bath and syrup of figs night’, liberty bodices and when boys turned men when they progressed from short trousers to long. He was very entertaining and caused much laughter. Many thanks to the ladies of Kenfig WI for hosting the Link meeting - a very enjoyable evening with great entertainment. Jennifer Davies and Janet Davies were the two lucky members who attended the WI centenary Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. They gave us a very interesting account of the days proceedings which sounded wonderful. They had a fantastic day - one which they will never forget. On 10th June our members had a trip to Tenby, leaving Porthcawl at 9.30am arriving in Tenby in time for coffee. We were fortunate with the weather as it was a beautiful day. A few of our more adventurous ladies sailed to Caldy Island, choppy waters going but calmer on the homeward journey. Lots of retail therapy and ice cream to keep us cool. Finance Business Property Relief & Inheritance Tax Where circumstances permit, the Inheritance Tax (IHT) efficiency of a will can be maximised by leaving assets that qualify for 100% Business Property Relief (BPR) directly to your children. If it is not desirable to leave such assets directly, an alternative approach would be to place the business assets in a trust, as a chargeable transfer, where your children are the beneficiaries. As the assets have a zero value for IHT purposes, there will be no IHT charge on the transfer into the trust. If the intention is to leave business assets to the surviving spouse, a further option involves leaving the business assets to your children, (IHT exempt), and for the spouse to purchase these assets subsequently. The children would then have the cash value of the business without suffering any IHT loss. The business assets would re-qualify for BPR after the spouse had owned them for a further two year period. These assets could then be left to the children, again, in the surviving spouse’s will. Your children could therefore inherit an unlimited value of business assets twice, free from IHT on both occasions. A variation on this theme would be to leave the business assets to a discretionary will trust and for the surviving spouse to purchase them at arm’s length from the trustees. Garden Bird Watch: Great Spotted Woodpecker Despite being a woodland bird, Great Spotted Woodpeckers make regular forays into gardens at this time of year to take beakfuls of food away for their young. It is very easy to tell the family members apart. Adult birds have a black head whilst juveniles sport a red cap; the male has a red nape whilst the female’s is black. The head and neck of Great Spotted Woodpeckers are specially structured to prevent brain damage when they bang their beak (at 10-40 hits per second) on dead trees or even metal. Drumming, as it is known, is performed by both sexes and enables a pair to keep in touch with each other. Great Spotted Woodpeckers adore peanuts (always feed from a metal mesh feeder) and fat blocks. Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club July is a busy month with lots of watering, plus the continuous battle with weeds and the somewhat tedious (but definitely profitable) deadheading! But somehow you must find the time to sit and relax in the sunshine in your garden and enjoy the results of all your hard work! Remember that by feeding hanging basket and container plants every two weeks cascading varieties like Surfinia, and Million Bells will give a stunning performance until early frosts – well worth the effort! When deadheading roses it’s best to prune back to a bud in a leaf axil lower down the stem this encourages strong new shoots – you will have a continuous lovely rose display into autumn! If you are growing onions, don’t allow them to go short of water, as this will affect the size of the crop (we all want big onions!) Water runner beans often at the roots and maybe treat them to a little bit of lime in the water, when ready, pick regularly along with courgettes to encourage more (the more you pick the more you get!) Did you know - rhubarb, in the mid 1600’s was double the price of opium in Britain - try smoking that! Chris Early

Gail Wintle Horticultural Show Secretary The Vale of Glamorgan Agricultural Society was established in 1772 for farmers to meet and compete in annual produce and livestock competitions. Eventually the Society created the Vale of Glamorgan Show, initially held in Cowbridge, it moved to its magnificent site at Fonmon Castle in 1998. There are more than 200 Trade Stands on the field marketing and selling a huge variety of goods. A Food Hall stands in the centre of the field selling produce, most of which has been grown or made in the Vale, along with a Shopping Mall which allows small traders to exhibit. The Show hosts a large Craft Fair and Horticultural Show along with a Home Produce marquee.

Cornelly Horticultural Society Annual Show Cornelly Horticultural Society are proud to announce their 4th Annual Show! Taking place on Saturday 8th August at Cornelly Community Centre. The competition is open to everyone and classes range from fruit & veg to flowers, craft, cookery, art and a children’s category. Schedules and entry forms are available from Pyle Life Centre and Cornelly Hardware Store. Visitors are welcome to come along for homemade refreshments and to browse the wonderful skills on show in the many exhibits. There will be an auction of produce after the prize giving and raffle, so you could bag yourself a local, fresh, homegrown or homemade bargain! The hall will be open between 08:00 - 11:30 for exhibitors to set up, and then 14:00 - 17:00 for visitors. INHERITANCE CLAIMS An inheritance can never compensate for the death of a partner or family member. And, unfortunately, inheritance claims can cause problems, for example, if someone believes they aren’t receiving their fair share of a person’s estate. Even more difficult and upsetting inheritance problems can arise if a person was financially dependent on the deceased or if the executors of a will are accused of not acting properly. Inheritance claims as a beneficiary Claiming an inheritance is usually straightforward if you are named in the will as a beneficiary. The executors take control of all the deceased’s assets, pay off any debts and distribute the inheritances to the beneficiaries according to the terms of the will. You may, however, need to be patient. Administering an estate can be time-consuming and it often takes several months before a beneficiary receives an inheritance. Claiming your family inheritance If there is no will, family inheritance entitlements are governed by the rules of intestacy. Depending on the amounts involved, any spouse (or civil partner) is entitled to inherit at least part of the estate, with the remainder split among the nearest relatives. With or without a will, family inheritances may seem unfair. Particular problems can arise if a couple were living together (without actually being married or in a civil partnership), if there were previous relationships or stepchildren or if a will unexpectedly favours one child over another. Spouses, civil partners, former spouses or civil partners, cohabiting partners, children and any financial dependents may be able to make a claim for reasonable financial provision – even if the will (or the rules of intestacy) specifies a smaller inheritance or no inheritance at all. Inheritance claim disputes Inheritance disputes can occur in other situations. For example, a will can be invalid if it was drawn up under undue pressure or if the testator subsequently married. Individual bequests in the will may be invalid. For example, if the bequest is unclear or if an inheritance has been left to one of the witnesses. Disputes can also occur if executors act improperly, either by mistake (eg misinterpreting the will) or deliberately.Inheritance claim disputes, like other legal disputes, can be complex, time-consuming and costly. Whether you are a beneficiary or not, if you are not getting the inheritance to which you believe you are entitled you should take legal advice.

Arts Choristers On The Catwalk

A Film Maker’s Point Of View

As a break from exercising their musical talents, these lovely ladies from Cor Bro Ogwr showed off their modelling skills in the recent fund raising fashion show in Bridgend. Clothes came from Samantha B in Ewenny, Jan Lewis showcased some of her hand made hats and jewellery, and the evening was both entertaining and informative. Sam, owner of the Ewenny shop, introduced all the outfits and gave the audience an insight into the designers some home grown Welsh - and the hows and whys of choosing and buying stock. With a glass of wine and a 10% discount voucher included, the evening went with a swing, thanks to organiser Joan Jefferies, her team of helpers and Marooned Hairdressers of Cowbridge. The choir works hard at its music and social life. Annual dinners, concert ‘afterglows’ and fund raising events with the emphasis on the ‘fun’ part. These include visits to Christmas markets, talks, coffee mornings and participation in choral events around the country. Choir trips abroad include sightseeing and socialising time. Of all the local history films I have made, ‘A History of Bridgend’ is one of my favourites. Everything seemed to go right when it was in production, apart from some of the minor difficulties that arise when making any film. The town itself has seen a great amount of change especially in the centre, and one could argue not necessarily for the better, although much-needed flood defences made the River Ogmore less likely to burst its banks, a once not infrequent occurrence with dire consequences for the surrounding streets. Controversially, the old Town Hall was demolished and this took away one of the town’s landmarks, making way for new development. But what happened in Bridgend has been allowed to take place in many other fine and interesting towns, somewhat to their detriment, I believe, and this is why it is so important to have a detailed photographic record. How fortunate it was that old movie footage had been taken of serious flooding in the early sixties and the demolition of the wartime ordnance factory site to make way for Bridgend Industrial Estate, both included in ‘A History of Bridgend’. Members of The Performance House Midis’ recently starred in Peter Pan at Coleg Cymunedol y Dderwen. Cast members aged 11 to 15 entertained appreciative audiences with excellent acting, singing and dancing. The musical score was written especially for the show by David Harrington. Each year Porthcawl Male choir and our colleagues of the Port Talbot Cymric choir, join forces to stage a concert on behalf of LATCH, the organisation which supports children undergoing treatment for cancer. Last year the concert was held in Port Talbot, this year it’s Porthcawl’s turn. The venue is All Saints Church and the date is Saturday 25th July, commencing at 7pm. Special guests for the evening are Cor Serenata Ladies Choir, Musical Director Matthew Lewis and accompanist Elisabeth Jones. The male choirs’ musical team are: Mair Jones (Musical Director) with accompanists Richard Davies and Huw Smitham. Tickets, priced at £6, are available at the door. All proceeds go to LATCH. This year our annual concert will take place on Saturday 5th September at the Grand Pavilion and will feature celebrity guests Richard and Adam from Britain’s Got Talent.The duo have since appeared at a number of venues throughout the country including recently appearing as guests of the Morriston Orpheus choir in Swansea. Arts Bringing The Studio To The Street Over 70 artists took up positions in and around Porthcawl last month to compete in Art Challenge Wales (ACW), a new oneday art competition that is now set to become a vibrant annual cultural event for the town, attracting artists and visitors from far and wide. Delighted passers by stopped to chat to artists and watch them create a range of Porthcawlinspired work that included paintings, sculptures and textiles: “I’d never painted in public before and I was nervous to start,” said one competitor. “However, it turned out to be such a fantastic day. Everyone was so welcoming and enthusiastic. I’ll certainly be doing it again next year!” There was a celebratory prize event and display of all the work held at Coedargraig House, attended by the entrants and judging panel that included acclaimed Welsh artist Kevin Sinnott, local businessman and competition organiser Philip Vaughan – who presented winners Karen O’Shea, Mary James and Jan Hawkard with £500, £300 and £200 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Additional prizes were also awarded for highly commended, junior and people’s choice categories. “We are thrilled with the results - the quality and range of work submitted was amazing and we will double the prize money next year,” said Philip. Short Story Winners Honoured At Carnegie House

Bridgend Writers’ Circle has held a presentation evening and launched its 40th Anniversary Anthology. Chairman Alex Marshall welcomed Bridgend Town Mayor - Cllr David White and his wife Jacquie, past and present members of BWC, Eluned Gramich - South Wales Development Officer for Literature Wales, and local poet Rhian Edwards who judged the competition. He thanked all the competition sponsors: Artful Yoga (Maesteg), Ty Newydd National Writers’ Centre, Literature Wales, Chapter Arts Centre and Seren Publishers. Councillor White expressed his pleasure at welcoming BWC at Carnegie House on a permanent basis. He said the move of the town library to the leisure centre was proving a success and Bridgend was now able to offer accommodation to a host of art groups and events at Carnegie House. Presentations were made to Jennifer Rainbow, Jo Derrick and Elizabeth Mahoney. Then members of the group read poems from the anthology. Alex Marshall stressed the team effort that went into both the competition and the production of the anthology. Meetings are on the third Thursday of the month, Carnegie House, 7.15pm. Our season has now ended, but we will still be meeting every week for field trips. The season ended with presentations, practical evenings, awards and a couple of competitions: Club Competition Three - judged by Fred Davies. Print section The winner was Richard Craze. Second place also went to Richard, and in third place was David Jones. Digital section The winner was Geoff Baker. Second place was shared between Trevor Owen and John Corcoran, and in third place was Richard Craze. The Clyne Jones Trophy - judged by Les Loosemore. The winner was Richard Craze. Second place went to Trevor Owen and in third place was John Corcoran. At our AGM Richard Craze was awarded Photographer of the Year – Prints, Geoff Baker was awarded Photographer of the Year – Digital, and Trevor Owen was awarded the President’s Cup. Malcolm Nugent was honoured for his many years of service to the club. Congratulations to everyone who won competitions or awards. We have an exhibition in the Grand Pavilion from 10th to 16th August, so we’ll see you there. July is one of the quieter months for Choir engagements, but it does allow for chorister and music team holiday and practice. Amongst the items currently being learned are the stirring Russian ‘Cavalry of the Steppes’; from Camelot - ‘How to Handle a Woman’; Jekyll & Hyde’s ‘This is the Moment’ and a song associated with the great Matt Monro – ‘Softly, As I Leave You’. Focus is for a new CD planned for later this year and a massed concert to which Bridgend Male Choir have been invited. The concert is to be held at Birmingham Town Hall in 2016 to celebrate premier choir, Canoldir’s 40th Birthday. Joining Bridgend will be the choristers of the Fron; Pontarddulais & Cardiff Arms Park. Some other highlights before then link singing and rugby, which naturally come together in Wales. As I write, the Choir comes together at Bridgend Athletic RFC celebrating the Silver Anniversary of the Mini & Junior section, with International Rugby Referee, Nigel Owens and two further Rugby World Cup 2015 tournament engagements. An Eve of World Cup Q & A and singing engagement at Cardiff will be followed by a visit to the renowned Leicester Tigers RUFC, where BMC will entertain when England face Wales at Twickenham. Sport Grommet Surf Camp In Pembrokeshire

Late May the parents of the Welsh Coast Surf Club embraced the gin colour waters of Pembrokeshire for a weekend of quality surf tuition, friendship, tranquil walks, and memory making. Greg and Simone Owen provided the impetus to draw us together and provided us with a wellplanned and executed weekend of relaxed surf tuition. The group stayed at the Stackpole outdoor learning centre. The time together provided days of sunshine, obligatory sand dune climbing and stunning photography provided by Pete Bounds (aka Mr Surfing Pembrokeshire). Pete also provided words of wisdom, especially as his group is dominating Welsh surfing at the moment. We learnt some lessons on the way and the Grom Club is slowly morphing into a group of happy little shredders with the trademark Welsh smile

Porthcawl Cricket Club - Junior Section The season is now half way through and as of Mid June both the U11’s and U12’s have started well. The U11’s managed by Josh Aubrey have played 4. won 2, lost 2, with 2 games cancelled. Notable performances from Shannon Jones, Luke Warren, James Crole and Charlie Ashpole. The U12’s, with John Edwards, have had a similar start to the season playing 3 games, winning 2, losing 1 and 2 cancelled. Impressing in the team were Isaac Seaside News | 52

A lot has been happening in the club during May. Firstly the CARTEN (Cardiff to Tenby) was well attended by club members. It was rode into a very strong head wind all day; however this couldn’t stop Alex Lewis and Geoff McCann finishing in the top 5. Then it was the turn of James Pugh who finished third in the Herio Sportive in Carmarthen. Alex Thomas put the icing on the cake by winning the Welsh Road Race Championships riding in Onitsports race team. The club, with the help of Lel Howard, have now created a beginner group for those wishing to get into the sport and have little experience. The idea is that under the watchful eye of Lel they will learn basic riding and maintenance skills and to gain confidence to enable them to move to the regular rides the club holds. Bridgend athlete Nia Clatworthy was selected to represent Wales in the Virgin London mini marathon recently. Nia who runs for Bridgend Athletic Club was chosen amongst 5 other girls in the under 13 age group to run the last 3 miles of the London marathon. She thoroughly enjoyed the experience of this big event and hopes she can compete at this level again next year.

Southerndown & Ogmore Surf Report An average summer so far with no heat waves or big waves. This month there has been just the few days of glassy swell, early morning, with big high tides. On the turning tide each evening the onshore wind picked up and made the small swell that was running very poor for afternoon into evening surfs.I have enjoyed making a film for the riding stables at Ogmore by sea YouTube search ‘David Anthony Batten Ride on the Beach at Ogmore by sea’. I also captured some great film of Goosanders fishing in the Ogmore. These things a man must do while the surf is flat. The sea temperature is still a little bit chilly. The sands haven’t fully returned to the top of Southerndown Bay yet and there are two gaping mud patches in the pebble bank. I have never seen that before until these last few years. The wall on Southerndown cliff has been blasted away by storms also. Looking at old photos of Hardy’s Bay in Ogmore by sea, the sand is about 12ft lower than 20yrs ago. Hopefully by the time you read this our nippers will have competed at their first nipper carnival of the season down on Barry beach on the last Saturday of June. Our nippers have had a slow start to the season with us unable to get a team together to attend the Mumbles nipper carnival. This may be down to the continuing cold water temperatures, so we hope their enthusiasm to compete and have a fun day out on the beach will rise as the summer warms the sea. The club’s juniors on the other hand are charging ahead with their training, putting in lots of effort in the sea and at the pool which has led to lots of competition for fast swim times in preparation for their upcoming lifeguard assessments. We also have our junior carnival to look forward to on the 11th July at Coney Beach. This will involve a big effort from all club members to make it a successful, smooth running event.
