NOTTAGE VILLAGE GREEN IS A DISGRACE

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS

Dear Editor, What is happening to Nottage green? The grass never seems to get cut anymore. On May bank holiday weekend the village was packed and people had to put up with a foot deep uncut grass that had obviously not been cut this season. You would think that BCBC would have the whereabouts to realise that the grass would need a cut prior to the bank holiday? Obviously not. BCBC have contracted out the grass cutting to cut costs and it shows. Last season was the same where the grass was left to grow out of control. People in Porthcawl pay high rates and it seems once more BCBC is ignoring this area. Glenn White, Porthcawl

SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME THANKS TO CADDT Dear Editor, I wish to thank CADDT once again for the opportunities they offer the community. They offered Christmas crafts, which I, and others enjoyed immensely. Earlier this year, Adrian Morgan and his staff offered a weekly session. Every Wednesday morning we meet, at the moment we are rug making. We have a cup of tea and cake if somebody bakes, and we all help each other out. Most importantly it gives us a reason to leave the house, I have made some lovely new friends and really look forward to it each week. So thanks to CADDT, and especially to Lyn for teaching, and putting up with us. PRIMARY CARE CENTRE, PORTHCAWL

TRIBUTE TO CRAIG EVANS

Dear Editor, Regarding the circular letter received from the doctors of Porthcawl seeking our support in response to the above project, they state that they have been in negotiation for the last 10 years to progress this care centre for the people of Porthcawl. They tried to purchase the police station, fire station and ambulance station and approached the council for a plot of land from the council for this purpose but without success. What is so ironic is that the people of Porthcawl owned the land at Hillsboro car park, Salt Lake and Sandy Bay through the Porthcawl Council but with the amalgamation in 1974 we lost this land to Ogwr/ BCBC. Eventually the doctors acquired a piece of land at the Mallard Reach site. The building was passed by the Planning department but rejected by the Highways department on the grounds of lack of parking spaces. As a result the care centre is in jeopardy and a new site will have to be found. The most suitable and convenient site for the doctors and public of Porthcawl would be a parcel of land at the top end of Hillsboro car park adjoining and near the existing Portway Surgery. The Hillsboro car park under the regeneration plans was earmarked for a supermarket but since this was not cast in stone, the site would be ideal and a further advantage would be that a third party is not involved in the ownership of this site. To acquire this land it must be the combined effort of the doctors, councillors, our MP to be especially to the fore, the different organisations and of course the Porthcawl public with the assistance of the press and if possible get the TV involved the fight must be taken direct into the council offices at Bridgend. The success of the fight will affect every man, woman and child of Porthcawl so it is not now a case of talking but of taking action. This care centre is vital to the town. John Jenkins, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, What a beautiful, heart rendering tribute to Craig Evans by Jemma, on page 14 of the May issue. I took Seaside News into work last night and some of us were close to tears reading Jemma’s thanks to us. We all enjoyed Craig’s infectious happiness and laughter over many years of knowing him in the Ford Bridgend Engine Plant. We hope that Jemma, Tash, Lauren & family will stay strong in the knowledge that he was thought of so highly by so many. Work mates of Craig Bridgend Engine Plant

A BIG THANKS YOU FROM GUIDE DOGS CYMRU Dear Editor, Through the Seaside News we would like thank everyone who supported Guide Dogs Cymru when we were collecting in Porthcawl on 16th April. We are most grateful to residents and visitors for their kindness and generosity. Our total collection amounted to £542.66, which will certainly help people who have a visual impairment. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

AFON Y FELIN PRIMARY NEWS

The examination season is already upon us and staff and pupils are working incredibly hard with even Years 7, 8 and 9 completing their National tests. Over the past month we have enjoyed a whole range of additional opportunities to learn and revise. Teachers have provided sessions in the holidays, on weekends, on bank holidays, before and after school… a herculean effort, which I am so grateful for. The teachers have offered hundreds of extra hours of tuition and I thank them most sincerely and wish the pupils well for their examinations. Pupils in the Art and Textiles Department are frantically putting their finishing touches to their examination pieces and the whole Department is ablaze with colour and vitality; the standard of work is breathtaking. The Drama Department have a busy schedule too with the BTEC Performing Arts pupils staging ‘Nunsense the Musical’ on 6th, 7th and 8th July. The Young Playwrights’ Festival follows shortly afterwards; this is a celebration of writing, acting and directing talent in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. Performances for parents, friends and family are on the 13th and 14th July. Both productions will take place in the School’s Jubilee Theatre... Follow @PCS_ DramaDept for more information. Andrew Slade Head Teacher

We are so pleased and proud that Ms N. Williams, who has been our interim head for the last two years has been appointed as our head teacher on a permanent basis! Together with the staff and governors, Ms Williams was responsible for raising our school out of the red category straight into yellow, raising attendance and the school profile also. It’s onwards and upwards here at Afon y Felin. Our choir returned to the Pensioners’ luncheon club again recently. All songs in the first half were sunshine based, very appropriate for the sunny weather on the day. They then sang a selection of wartime songs, including Run rabbit, run and Pack up your troubles. Alfie Price sang Calon Lan, moving the audience to tears. Many thanks to them for providing our children with beautiful home made cakes, we will be back at Christmas. Don’t forget your children can play fun games and practise maths at home on the Abacus Website www. activelearnprimary.co.uk, the children have the school code. Well done to the PFA who raised £183 at their cake sale! AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor

NOTTAGE NEWS This term sees many year groups going on day trips with visits planned to The National Botanic Gardens, Caerphilly Castle, Crucial Crew and a Beach Study to name but a few. Congratulations to Matt Neeson who played Mowgli in the recent production of the Jungle Book at the Pavilion. Matt also had a distinction in his Grade 1 Piano exam. Brother Ed was also successful in his Grade 3 guitar exam. Well done boys! Libby Roach’s superb entry entitled ‘Our World is Beautiful’ was the overall winner of the Porthcawl cluster schools’ writing competition organised by the Rotary Club. Councillor Stubbs presented Libby with her certificate and also prize money of £25. A big thank you to our PTA once again for purchasing much needed IT equipment. What would we do without you? Planned for July 2nd is the PTA annual Summer Fayre, which will begin at 11.00am. Finally, congratulations to Mrs Adele Thomas who, after a rigorous 2 day interview process was appointed the new Head teacher of Nottage Primary School. Mrs Thomas, who is currently head of Nantyfyllon Primary, will take up post at the start of the Autumn Term. Kerry Townley Seaside News | 16

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS We have another busy month at Porthcawl Primary. We are coming to the end of our science experiment in which we planted seeds sent down by Tim Peake from the International Space Station. The seeds were split in two colours, red and blue. One colour had been to space the others had stayed on Earth. After a month the blue seeds had grown the quickest but more of the reds had survived so we are not sure ones are the space seeds! We are also looking forward to representing Wales with our Formula 1 team after designing the fastest car in South Wales. We have been working hard tweaking our pit display, portfolio and verbal presentation so that we can get as many points as possible. The U.K. final takes place in Coventry in June so fingers crossed we can do Porthcawl and Wales proud! We are also well into our rehearsals for the end of year production. Auditions are done and parts have been given out. Our pupils are working hard to learn their lines and props are being created for the end of year extravaganza in July! Andrew Wood Head Teacher Porthcawl Primary

TECHNOLOGY Q.

Hi David, My son has asked for a new monitor for his PC, he uses the PC mainly for gaming but also does his homework on it, I’ve looked online but there are so many to choose from? Thanks Barbara, Bridgend

A.

Hi David, You are right, there are so many monitors to choose from and it does really depending on what you plan to do with the monitor. For the most part, all monitors will do the job but if you want to get it right there are a few factors to consider. First of all, cost – monitors can start for as little as £70 for a 22-inch monitor and go well over £1700 for a 32-inch 4k Monitor. For a 27-inch gaming monitor, one of the most popular ones is an ASUS MX279H. It is suitable for gaming since it has the correct refresh rate (that will mean something to your son I’m sure) and it’s also a very bright panel, which uses the latest IPS Technology. The monitor resolution is capable of HD Images since it has a resolution of 1080p not to dissimilar to the TV is most people’s front rooms. As an added bonus this particular monitor also comes with a Bang & Olufsen speakers built into the chassis of the screen so potentially could save some space on his desk if he already has some PC’s speakers. If you’re looking for something a bit smaller, they offer a 24inch version but it doesn’t come with speakers. If you’re looking for the best monitor, then look no further than the Dell UltraSharp range, these are fantastic monitors but the cost is being closer to the £1000 mark for the 32-inch 4K monitor. If you are just after a modest price monitor which will tick all the boxes, take a look at the AOC G2460PQU which is available on Amazon for £199.99 – this one has all he needs for gaming and school work. will be displayed, it’s very easy to use indeed. If you’re looking for something that doesn’t cost, you could try TeamViewer. They allow their product to be used for free in home environments. With TeamViewer, you don’t need to sign up to anything either. Just visit Teamviewer.com and click on the link in the middle of the screen “Download TeamViewer”. Once you have downloaded it, you will need to run the download and install the TeamViewer Application. Once it has downloaded, it will give you the option to setup your PC for unattended/remote access, follow the wizard to set this up and you are ready to go. You can then download the same application on your laptop/ iPad/ MacBook etc. and you will need to know your personal ID and Password which are created during the setup of the application, make sure you keep those handy before you leave your home or you won’t be accessing your PC whilst away. With both of these products, don’t forget to set you PC power Management settings. You need to make sure your PC doesn’t “go to sleep” after being unattended for a set period of time. To do this, visit the Power Management options in the Control Panel, check the options which relate to the PC going to Sleep or into Hibernation, make sure those options are not enabled otherwise when you try and access your PC remotely, there is a good chance the PC is in Hibernation Mode. Q.

Hi David, Is it possible to set up remote access to my PC so when I’m away from home, I can access my PC via my laptop? Phil, Porthcawl

A.

Hi Phil, Yes, there are quite a few options out there for this type of activity. The one I used mainly is Logmein.com, which allows me to set up remote access to all my various client PC’s based round the UK. They used to do a free version for home users but they do provide a free 14 days’ trial if it’s just a one off. To use, visit www.logmein.com and click on the button right in the middle of the screen ‘Try it Free’. This will take you through a small account creation process and once done it will download a small application onto your home PC. Once its installed, you will then be able to control your PC from any other Internet Enabled Device (iPad/ laptop/ MacBook etc.). All you need to do is logon to the logmein.com portal using the details you created during the signing up process and once you have logged in, you will see your PC in the list of PCs which are available to Remote Control. Click on this will then launch a screen in which your home PC Seaside News | 20

BOOK OF THE MONTH Different Class by Joanne Harris In this gripping new psychological thriller, Joanne Harris explores the tensions at St Oswald’s Grammar in North Yorkshire, where the Latin master Roy Straitley has seen all kinds of boys come and go over 30 years. A new broom has arrived, bringing Powerpoint, sharp suits and even sixth form girls to the dusty corridors but while Straitley does his sardonic best to resist, a shadow from his past is stirring. A boy who even twenty years on haunts his teacher’s dreams. A boy capable of bad things…

News GAIN THE RECOGNITION YOUR BUSINESS DESERVES Entries are now being invited for the 2016 Bridgend Business Forum Awards. With a range of categories including Startup Business of the Year, Manufacturing Business of the Year, Business Student of the Year and Creative Industries Award, there are opportunities for a wide variety of local businesses and entrepreneurs to gain the recognition they deserve. I’ve attended these awards for the past three years, and I can honestly say that each year the nominations and the calibre of businesses which enter never fail to impress. We should never underestimate the vital role that small and medium-sized businesses in Bridgend County Borough play in driving our local economy. These companies should be acknowledged and celebrated – this is why the council is proud to support these awards, which provide the perfect platform to do this. I would urge all businesses across the county borough to submit an application to gain the recognition you and your employees truly deserve. All businesses based in Bridgend County Borough are eligible to enter, and the deadline for submissions is Friday 8 July, while the winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in September. You can download an application form and find further details at www. bridgendbusinessforum.co.uk Councillor Mel Nott OBE Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

GOOD PROGRESS BEING MADE ON SEAFRONT CYCLE ROUTE Work is progressing well on the new shared use cycle and pedestrian route that’s being created along Porthcawl’s seafront. Thanks to good weather in early May, the contractors are ahead of schedule. The work around the marina area wasn’t due to start until September but may now start sooner and dovetail with access work that’s needed as part of the development of the Jennings building. All being well, the majority of the route could therefore be complete before the school summer holidays, and will make family bike and scooter rides along the seafront much more enjoyable. Meanwhile, if you’re heading to one of Porthcawl’s beaches this summer, make sure you stay safe by always heeding the advice of lifeguards. We’ve teamed up with RNLI Lifeguards South Wales for them to provide a seasonal patrol, and lifeguards have already started work at Trecco Bay, Sandy Bay and Rest Bay, while they’ll begin a daily duty at Pink Bay from 2 July. Lifeguards provide an invaluable service, helping to keep beach goers safe by spotting danger and saving lives. Make sure you always swim at a lifeguarded beach within the red and yellow flagged swimming area and listen out for any warnings. SPENDING A PENNY BECOMES EASIER News that the Comfort Scheme, which enables members of the public to use toilets in shops, pubs and cafes throughout Bridgend borough, is welcome. Anything that increases the availability of toilets is good especially as the council has closed some down recently. This scheme could help replace lost facilities and is especially important in a seaside resort like Porthcawl where the population of the town doubles during the summer because of visitors. I supported Cllr Ken Watts in trying to get a toilet provided at the seafront in Newton so I hope that this scheme can be used to pay a local business there to take part. Each business will get up to £500 a year to participate. That has to be a bargain for council taxpayers compared to the cost of providing, maintaining and cleaning public toilets. I understand that the council is to monitor where applicants are located to ensure that they are not close to public toilets and that they offer long enough opening hours and an acceptable standard of facilities. This scheme used to be funded by Welsh Government but now the council will pick up the tab – a move I welcome. HARBOURSIDE NEWS We’ve had a really busy few weeks here at Porthcawl Harbourside, with lots of news to bring you. After a lot of work, many consultations, meetings and design drafts we have recently submitted a Planning Application for the Porthcawl Maritime Centre and Harbour Quarter at Cosy Corner. We’re delighted to announce that we will be holding a further Public Consultation event at The Y Centre on Saturday 4th June, from 10am to 4pm. We would love you to pop in and take a look at our proposals and we can hopefully answer any questions you may have regarding the development. We look forward to seeing you there. This week, thanks to Coastal Communities Funding, we took delivery of our Sea Bus, which came all the way from the USA. The Sea Bus is a travelling Rock Pool Aquarium and will help us to deliver SeaQuest sessions during term time and school holidays, displaying on-shore ecology, food chains and habitats. Thanks to The Welsh Church Fund, we have also purchased a Beach Wheelchair, which will make our outdoor sessions inclusive. SeaQuest are planning a bird talk in June, date to be confirmed. News THANK YOU As the dust settles on the Assembly elections I would like to thank all those who voted for me and the Welsh Liberal Democrats on 5th May. Although I was not re-elected, I have been touched by the number of people of all parties and none who have been in touch to thank my staff and me for the work we did during the 17 years I was an Assembly Member. I am proud of what we achieved in that period both in representing constituents and fighting for this area in the Senedd chamber. I am now in the process of contacting those who I have been representing and whose case is outstanding so as to ensure that their cause continues to be dealt with by another elected representative where the constituent has agreed and where that is appropriate. Much of this casework was only successfully dealt with due to the expertise, commitment and professionalism of my staff, and I am grateful to them, as they look for alternative employment, for the way they dealt with the many problems that came our way. My office in Swansea will be closing shortly. I will be continuing my work as a local councillor in Swansea and look forward to continuing to represent people in the Cwmbwrla, Manselton and Brynhyfryd area. The current arrangements are no longer fit for purpose therefore this new medical centre is much needed in the area. At the Committee meeting, discussions centred on highway and pedestrian safety issues and car parking provision. The S106 Agreement covers a range of issues. For example, the applicant will have to bring forward a Traffic and Delivery Management Plan, a landscaping scheme, a scheme for the comprehensive and integrated drainage of the site, a scheme for the provision of pedestrian crossing facilities across the A4229 Pyle Road at the Northern Splitter Island of the A4229 / A4106 /Fulmar Road roundabout and provide funding for a bus shelter at the bus stop at Newton Nottage Road. Also, the applicant will need to provide an extended bus service from Nottage to the Health Centre and secure an area of land close to the site to provide a minimum of 20 staff car parking spaces.

CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH FOR NEW CARE CENTRE It’s been well known for some time now that the GP service in Porthcawl has been operating under a great deal of strain, so the recent announcement that a primary care centre is set to be developed is excellent news for the area. This state of the art facility will be constructed at Mallards Reach after revised plans were submitted by ABMU Health Board and approved by Bridgend County Borough Council. Although there were some initial concerns about ensuring that the centre has sufficient parking, these were quickly addressed and approval was given subject to a Section 106 agreement intended to deliver the additional car parking as well as a bus service for the facility. It was important to get this application right in order to maximise the benefits for local people and minimise any potential impact that it may have on residents, patients, staff and visitors, so the council worked closely with ABMU Health Board on the details. The care centre will include a pharmacy, 22 consulting rooms, six treatment rooms, a physio room, a shared minor ops room and a baby feeding area, so I’m really looking forward to seeing this highly significant community facility open its doors. FEATURES “OUR WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL” SAY PORTHCAWL YOUNG WRITERS

The search for Porthcawl’s young writers of the future has ended, at least for this year, and has shown that we have some amazing talent in our local schools. The National Young Writer Competition is a well established and successful competition promoted by Rotary International in Britain and Ireland and also by the Rotary Club of Porthcawl. The competition is open to three age groups and here, in Porthcawl, the students entered were in the Junior Group with ages of 7 to 10 years. Students from West Park Primary, Nottage Primary and Porthcawl Primary Schools entered and were asked to produce a story or poem entitled “Our World is Beautiful” There were 78 entries and the standard was extremely high, impressing the two judges, Mrs. Barbara Stubbs and Mrs. Pat Markey who were amazed by the excellence of the students’ writing skills and imagination and their relevance to the subject. After much deliberation, the first three places were decided. In third place was Georgia Evans from West Park Primary School and in second place was Joel Barnes from Porthcawl Primary School. Both showed maturity and understanding of the theme. The overall winner was Libby Roach from Nottage Primary School. Libby was awarded first prize because of her extraordinary ability to give so many different interpretations of why ‘Our World is Beautiful’, including not only nature and architecture but also friendship, family support and love, support of teachers, holiday experiences, different work experiences, the way we support and help each other all over the world and many other interpretations. All were relevant to the theme. The Rotary Club of Porthcawl gives many congratulations to the three winners and also to all the students who entered and look forward to sponsoring the competition next year. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH I’m sure you’re familiar with the joke: “LOST DOG, One eye, no teeth, crooked tail. Answers to the name of Lucky.” One of my childhood neighbours had a pedigree poodle, Fifi that only ate freshly cooked chicken breast. Whilst across the road lived a mongrel called Blackie, who ate whatever came his way – usually the contents of the bins! Probably due to Fifi’s privileged diet, she had to be put to sleep when she was only five years old. However, Blackie carried on until he was a fine old age. The Book of Job says that human existence is “but a few days and full of trouble.” Whether the writer meant that the days or the humans are full of trouble is unclear – both are true. Trouble and bad luck touch us all – some more than others, especially the poor, those discriminated against, the mentally ill, the unemployed etc. But trouble still comes to all types of people, and contrary to popular opinion, it is not God’s punishment. Love is God’s hallmark, lifting humanity from despair, bad luck and trouble. God Bless… Rev Lewis Rees Minister with Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

BRIDGEND AND DISTRICT FISHING FOR THE DISABLED Bridgend and District Fishing for the Disabled, who organise once a month fishing from March to October, entertained Cwm Calon Maesteg, Pyle and Porthcawl Life Centre, Valley Gateway Sarn, Bridgend Resource Centre and Headstart on Wednesday 20th April. Fish ranging from 1lb to 3lb were caught with the 3lb fish being caught by Rhodri Jenkins of Cwm Calon Maesteg. While fishing anglers were being closely watched by a swan, making sure they did not get too close to its nest and were sent packing if they did!! We wish to thank the Rotary Club of Bridgend, Bridgend Lions, Ogmore Angling Association, Bridgend Fly Tying Association and Sunshine Lodge R.A.O.B. of Pencoed for their continuing support. Rtn Edgar Burt

Porthcawl RNLI have cashed in on the generous donation from J & J Wilson Ltd who run three shops on the Parkdean, Trecco Bay Holiday Park in the town. The money was raised from the sale of Heritage products at their Supermarket, Gift and Rock shops during the 2015 season. Area Manager for J & J Wilson Ltd, Trish Middleton said, “Our Company chose the RNLI at Porthcawl to benefit from these proceeds as we realise the important work that the lifeboat volunteers do along our coastline. We were pleased too that Parkdean’s regional director, Karl Schmidtke took time out of his busy schedule and supported us with this donation, emphasising the importance that is placed by both our companies on the work carried out by the RNLI.” Lifeboat Operations Manager, Philip Missen MBE said, “With our crews committed to training both on a Wednesday evening and Sunday morning we will use the money towards our training budget.” Station Treasurer, David Shillaw, commented, “As a charity all RNLI costs are met by the generosity of companies like J&J Wilson Ltd and indeed members of the public too. We are very grateful as this is a great benefit to our fundraising efforts.” Ian Stroud, Lifeboat Press Officer

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES The Apostles Creed says: “I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic and apostolic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What do you believe? Is it in something that will last for thousands of years or something that will be overtaken by the end of the century? G. K. Chesterton once said, “On five occasions in history the Church has gone to the dogs, but on each occasion, it was the dogs that died.” If Chesterton were alive today he might write about the sixth occasion. But like it’s founder Jesus Christ the Christian faith keeps coming back to life. Martin Gillard

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa A big thank you to all who sponsored Andy in the London Marathon. He completed in three hours 28 minutes and has raised £2800 for the Tools Self Reliance projects in Tanzania. We had a very wet open day at the workshop on May 11th. We had tools on display, a tour of the workshop and showed how the whole operation comes together from the African End to training, crate making, tool refurbishment, consignment and weighing. This was an event organised by “Network” a group who work through various churches in the area. Porthcawl’s Mayor, David Newton Williams paid us a visit on his last day in Office. In recent weeks we have sent a shipment of tools, four crates, and vices, and our next consignment will be leaving in Mid June for the Manyara projects. We shall be having a sale of surplus

FEATURES PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS

GLAMORGAN FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

Mr. George Jabbour, our speaker, attended our April meeting which began with a very enjoyable meal at the Grove Golf Club. Invitations have been sent to other Inner Wheel Clubs to attend our Fashion Show Inter-Club on 25th May. President Mary Emment-Lewis is our delegate to the Inner Wheel Conference in Glasgow in April. The Inner Wheel Coffee Morning was held in Trinity Church Hall on 15th April. In the introduction to his talk on Christianity in Syria George Jabbour expressed concern about the problems in the Middle East and the rise of the Islamic State. George grew up in Damascus where most of the residents were Muslim and 10% were Christians. His parents are Christians and still live in Damascus. People of both religions used to live there quite peacefully. The Christian School attended by George attracted Moslem pupils too. In class boys and girls sat next to each other. The main language was Arabic but French was also spoken. He recited the Lord’s Prayer in Arabic for us to hear how it sounded. George won a scholarship to study engineering at Imperial College, London. He became a British citizen in 2011. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent

Porthcawl Lions are pleased to report that the annual May Fayre was a success despite the non-cooperation of the weather. Visitors found plenty of interest inside the church with a big variety of stalls and games, hand bell ringing, a choir and some (lovable?) animals to pet. In the hall people could have drinks and a sandwich or cake off the cake stall while listening to the excellent ukulele band and eventually the weather cleared enough for the dog show later. Club members would like to thank everyone who participated in the day or found time to visit, with special thanks to All Saints for letting their church and grounds be taken over for the day. After clearing up Lions and partners celebrated with a fish and chip supper, ice cream and an indoor bowls match. Many thanks to Jan and Dave for hosting such an enjoyable evening. Club members and other community spirited helpers arranged a beach clean up of Newton beach after the awful weather had washed up a large amount of rubbish and in two hours many bags were filled. Y CEFN GWYRDD

Well winter has passed and the wonders of spring have shown themselves throughout the county, but especially in Cefn, of course. Primroses and blue bells are just reaching the end of their seasons but the hedgerows will soon be filled with cow parsley and the scent of May blossom. The Gwyrdd sprang into action with the proposed visit of the Bridgend and District Local History Society. This was the first visit of the year and during the springclean of the signal box a protected great crested newt was found sheltering under a stone next to the door. I wonder if this means that the box will also be conserved as a protected habitat? On the next day a chiff chaff perched on the blackthorn next to the stairs and a slow worm slunk along the footpath. The history walk organised by chairman Mike Stokes was a great success and the 28 walkers were a pleasure to lead due to their sense of humour and enthusiasm. Cefn Junction Signal Box is open at weekends during August but if you know of a group interested in history or nature please contact John Mason masoncj4@hotmail.com Facebook: Cefn Junction Signal Box

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Heigh Ho! Summer at last! Well as I write this in early May it is hope it continues. Since my last news we have had an excellent talk from Mr Alan Badmington, a return speaker who had us all in stitches. A good way to spend the afternoon. All our groups have been busy, the craft group, the indoor games learning a new game – Mexican Train based on dominoes – good fun, the literary group discussing John Betjeman and finally to the Jolly Sailor in Newton for our monthly luncheon. We are looking forward to an outing to the Gower Heritage Centre this month on June 16th – still seats available on the coach. Also this month three members will be going to the National AGM at Bournemouth where topics up for discussion will be Organ Donation and Modern Day Slavery. Our speaker this month is Rev Clive Williams another one we always enjoy this time on the Music of Handel. He gives us an insight into the private lives too, which can be very revealing and amusing! This will be on June 8th at All Saints Church Hall 2pm. All welcome, do try us out you will not be disappointed! Dorothy Thomas Tel 772157

THE YOUTH OF TODAY… We’re always hearing stories of bored teens causing trouble around the town, so thought it would be nice to highlight a group of teens who buck the trend and offer a helping hand across the local community. The Bridgend District Explorer Scouts are a group of 40 14-18 year olds who meet twice a week in Nottage and Pen Y Fai. Their recent activities include a beach clean at Rest Bay, where 20 bags of rubbish were removed; setting up and dismantling the annual Laleston Gardening Club plant sale; helping the Porthcawl Leos prepare for their annual book stall; collecting for the Poppy Appeal as well as the Bridgend Food Bank and many other ad hoc Seaside News | 32

community activities. Around a quarter of the group also volunteer as ‘Young Leaders’ across the local Cubs and Beaver Troops, which involves them committing to attend regular evening sessions as well as assisting at weekend and holiday camps. This is all alongside their own hikes and camps, completing Duke of Edinburgh Awards and revising for GCSEs and A-Levels. They’re a busy bunch and they have our thanks for the help they provide! FRIENDS OF ROTARY As many of you know, the Rotary Club of Porthcawl organises a number of events throughout the year to raise funds to donate to local and international charities. Our fund-raising events include the Christmas Tree Festival, the Christmas Carolcade, the Christmas Post, Street Collections, collections at supermarkets, the ‘Kids Out’ event (which takes under-privileged children to the Gower Heritage Centre) and many others. As a result of these activities, we are able to allocate up to £10,000 each year to charitable causes. However, there are occasions when it can be difficult for us to find enough Rotarians to man all of these events, particularly in December. We are aware that many people are unable to become Rotarians in their own right - for any number of different reasons. However, we also know that there are many who might like to support the Rotary Club in some other way. To this end, we are starting a ‘Friends of Rotary’ scheme where we would register those willing to help at an occasional event. If you would like to assist the Rotary Club in this way please let us know. You can contact either: Jeff Perren (Secretary) 01656 788093: e-mail jeff@ jeffperrenpartners.co.uk or Denzil Gould (Treasurer) 01656 715737: e-mail t.gould847@btinternet.com. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Ivor Williams

MARS AT ITS BEST FOR A DECADE Most planets are easy to recognise because they maintain the same brightness whenever they are visible. But Mars can sometimes be so faint that it’s hard find. All that changes this month when Mars is closer to us than it has been for a decade making it by far the brightest “star” in the sky. It has a distinct red colour caused by iron rust on the surface. It has the largest volcano in the solar system and there is ample evidence that water once flowed on the surface. However, billions of years ago Mars lost its protective magnetic field and the solar wind stripped away its atmosphere and water. Mars is a small planet, just twice the diameter of the Moon and it is 200 times as distant. It has two tiny moons named Deimos and Phobos, which can only be seen with a seriously large telescope. Phobos is starting to fall apart and will cease to exist in a few million years. In July 2018 Mars will be even brighter than it is now but you will have to wait until 2035 for the best appearance of the planet. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI

NEWTON WI

May the 3rd was our AGM, our meeting was brought forward one week as on the 10th of this month is the Federation AGM. Several of our members will be attending. AGM business over we discussed the Pyle Community Council Week. We have been asked to judge the ‘Bake It”competition on the 14th of June and also to meet and greet the people as they arrive with their cakes. The competition is open to all and this will be a good opportunity to introduce our WI. It is being held in the Talbot Centre where we hold our monthly meetings. We are hoping for a good turnout. Business over we had arranged an indoor bowls competition, this helped us raise funds for our chosen charity. Much laughter as we tried to knock over the skittles. Next month our talk is on Cardiff, we all know the shopping areas but it will be interesting to find out more of the history of our capital city. The talk is by Rosemary Scadden. Tea and biscuits rounded off our meeting. If like me you only know the castle and the shopping arcades in Cardiff pop in and enjoy the talk. Christine Callaghan

The May meeting was our AGM and resolutions night. We were pleased to have in attendance our WI adviser Mrs. Judith Lucas, who was most helpful and informative. Pearl Mason who has been our President for the last seven years, is sadly standing down, we thank her most sincerely for all her hard work and dedication, along with two of our longstanding committee members: Joan Williams and Pat Whitten, we also thank them. The new President will be Jennifer Davies, who we all welcome and wish every success in the years to come. A Fashion Show was held on April 27th featuring clothes from Samantha B of Ewenny. The evening was well attended and enjoyed by all. The beautiful outfits were expertly modelled by six of our members. On May 10th eight of our members attended the Annual Council Meeting at Port Talbot, what an excellent day. The guest speakers were Daphne Furnow, who did some wonderful floral arrangements, and Emma Leeke (MD of Leekes) who spoke on the history of the firm. John Benjamin (the well known Antiques Road Show expert) gave an excellent talk on the world of diamonds and jewellery in general, including his experiences on the Antiques Road Show. M Freeman

LALESTON WI Our 5 May Annual Meeting was taken by Vice-President Barbara Rees , who welcomed everyone, including WIAdviser Judith Lucas, new member Naomi Williams and a guest. The minutes of our previous meeting were read and agreed. Resolutions for the NFWI Annual Meeting were discussed and voted for. Financially, it was agreed 2015 had been a busy year celebrating the Centenary of the WI. New committee members Betty Rastin and Diane Thomas were welcomed. Secretary Diane Marshall and Treasurer Margaret Williams were re-elected. Dawn Storie was elected President. A huge thank-you was given to Margaret Aylen for her exceptional service as President, with best wishes for her recuperation. Barbara Rees was highly praised for standing in for Margaret, just what the WI is all about. Well done ladies. Details given to members of future fundraising activities and exciting trips. The monthly book club to be held on the 14th June at Bridgend Library. The raffle was won by Maureen Morgan. New members are always welcome. For further information call Diane on 01656 656600.

PORTHCAWL WI Our April meeting was opened by our President Gwen and new members and visitors were welcomed. We then had a wonderful gift wrapping demonstration from Alison Westward. She made it look so easy. For example, how do you wrap a CD and turn it into a flower!! Her colleague assisting her made the most marvellous greeting cards. Also in April some of our members went on an enjoyable visit to Denman College. We have a few more interesting trips planned through the year. As usual new members will be warmly welcomed. We meet at All Saints Church Hall usually on the 4th Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm, but due to the Referendum our WI meeting will be on Thursday 30th June, when we have a Jewellery Design and Making Demonstration. During the usual business section, Nora reported that the 50th Anniversary supper at the Hi-Tide had been one of the highlights of the year. All members who had attended agreed that this had possibly been one of the most enjoyable events of recent years. Legal

Lasting Power of Attorney

THE RISE OF “SILVER NUPS” Couples considering a second marriage who have children from their first are increasingly signing “Silver Nups” to protect their offspring’s inheritance. Parents often want to ensure that cash and assets go to their own children in the event of their death, rather than to a new spouse and step-children. Solicitors often see disputes following the death of a new spouse and the loss of their wealth to the new family and such disputes are often acrimonious. Therefore, increasingly we are called upon to prepare agreements to help older couples who have been married before to avoid such fallings out. The above could be interpreted as being ruthless but in reality it is a practical step to take. Often people don’t realise that a remarriage means that children of a first marriage will lose out on assets. Such agreements don’t have to be prepared before remarriage; it is possible to enter into such an agreement afterwards. The agreement will be prepared in conjunction with a will so that your assets will be ring fenced. Further, more couples are splitting up in later life, often after their children have flown the nest. In 2013, the number of over 60s divorcing their partners hit a 40 year high. Many older couples are simply choosing to cohabit rather than remarry. The number of unmarried over 65s living together has risen by more than 40% in eight years according to the Office for National Statistics. It is not pleasant to think about how your assets will be divided in the event of your death, but putting your mind to this in advance of a life changing event will avoid heartache for your children later on. If this issue is relevant to you, please contact us at Melanie Lazarus and Co to discuss your options. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

You may require help in the future from someone to make decisions about your health, money, property, at a time when you are unable to. If you want someone to be able to look after your affairs if you become incapable (for example, if you start suffering from dementia), you need to use a special kind of power of attorney. A power of attorney gives someone (your ‘attorney’) the power to make decisions on your behalf. You can prepare an LPA whenever you like, provided you have the mental capacity to understand what you are doing. However, the LPA does not take effect until it has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. There are two separate kinds of LPA: 1. Property and financial affairs. 2. Health and welfare. Property and financial affairs power of attorney, appoints an attorney to make decisions such as, Dealing with your bank accounts, handling day-to-day finances, dealing with taxes and making gifts that you used to make (eg birthday presents to relatives) on your behalf. Health and welfare power of attorney, appoints an attorney to make decisions such as, giving or refusing consent to particular medical treatments, being able to take decisions about ‘life-sustaining’ treatments, deciding whether you should continue living at home or move into a residential care home. Almost anyone over the age of 18, including your spouse, can be appointed as an attorney (though someone who is bankrupt cannot act as an attorney under a property and financial affairs LPA). An LPA can appoint more than one attorney. If you choose to have an LPA with a single attorney, or attorneys who must act together, the LPA could cease to be effective if one attorney can no longer act (eg: if an attorney dies). You need to decide who you would like to act as your attorney, and check that they are willing to be appointed. We can prepare the LPA forms for you to ensure you do not overlook any important issues and that you draft the LPA so that it has the desired effect. The forms are then signed by the donor, the attorneys and certificate providers (who sign to confirm you have understood the implications of this).

Finance MORTGAGE WORRIES – DON’T IGNORE THE ISSUE Never a week goes by when I take calls from all kinds of people, of all ages, who have mortgage problems. Many of these don’t realise that they can move to a different lender if the need is for such action, neither do they know that they could get batter terms by moving. Some of the calls centre on payment or credit difficulties or having an interest-only mortgage and no chance of finding the capital required to pay it off. With some lenders now pressurising borrowers to repay the capital quickly, these people can find themselves with nowhere to go or without the necessary help to resolve the issue. Even past poor credit history can be accepted by certain lenders now. The GOLDEN RULE ALWAYS is to talk to someone who could help. Whilst we cannot promise to be able to assist you to a solution every time, we are more often than not able to guide you towards the correct course of action to take. For the sake of a phone call, we may be able to put you on the right track. Recently I got a call from someone who’d previously been made bankrupt but had now got back on track. He was convinced that he’d never get on the mortgage ladder again but I was able to point him in the right direction and he and his wife have now been approved for a mortgage on a new home, despite the past difficulties. I also took a call from someone who took out equity release when interest rates were very much higher than they are now. The enquirer was asking whether a cheaper deal could be found and was it actually possible to move to another lender. The answer to both was YES, with the result that a new deal was arranged, on a much lower interest rate, making it all so much more cost-effective. Whilst it is true that recent, further changes to the mortgage market have made criteria tougher in some ways, there is still huge scope for choice and there are so many good schemes available – even up to age 95! All you need to do is pick up the phone – and if your situation is one that could be improved (subject to certain criteria being met). I’d be delighted to assist. Call 01656 782545 or 07768 418308. CHANGES IN LEGISLATION With legislation continually changing is it important to consider your financial planning requirements on the back of these changes. After all what was right 5 years ago may not be right today. Governments continually change the landscape in relation to taxation issues and as a result having your financial plans regularly reviewed has never been so important. This financial year has seen a big change in pension legislation particularly around the taxation of both contributions and also overall funding levels. We recently came across a client who through making a £90 pension contribution into his new companies auto-enrolled pension scheme, triggered a charge by HMRC of over £250,000. These issues can easily be avoided through regular planning. Seaside News | 38

For business owners and company directors – this year sees the introduction of a new dividend tax, which will add around £2,000 of tax liability from the most tax efficient of tax positions that previously existed. For those who have written Wills, it is important to consider the efficiency of the Will with the introduction of the new residential property exemption coming into effect next year. Again failing to amend these plans could cost as much as £70,000 per person if your Wills are not reviewed to make relevant amendments to your affairs. Above all else – keeping regularly updated and keeping plans updated is as important now as it has ever been. Please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange your free consultation – we aim to add value to your circumstances and not a layer of cost. Consultations can be held in the comfort of your own home. BIRD WATCH: SONG THRUSH

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

The Song Thrush has two to four broods every year, but only the female incubates the eggs and young. Following fledging, the parents divide the young between them taking sole charge of those assigned to them. The male’s song is made up of a series of phrases, many of which are repeated three times, and may contain human sounds such as alarms and telephones. The Song Thrush is warm-brown in colour with arrow shaped spots on its front. It has a longlegged, upright stance, and is slightly smaller than a Blackbird. It is the only British species to have mastered how to crack open a snail shell. The decline of the Song Thrush began in the 1970’s, dropping by 50% over 38 years. The Welsh name is Bronfraith, meaning mottled breast. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. Flaming June – the risk of frost has gone and the sun is shining (hopefully!) It may rain but long days and moisture mean the growing season is truly with us – your garden may never look better! Plant out summer bedding and if you are really feeling industrious winter bedding plants can be sown until July. When making up hanging baskets, a little bird (from the council) told me, a good idea is to throw in a few nasturtium seeds! As the bedding plants fade a bit up pop the nasturtiums pretty little heads – they’re edible too. Cut back dead bulb foliage, when it’s all died down naturally, cutting too early leads to blindness next year! There’s still time to plant out pots and containers, so try using loam-based compost, it is more ethical than a peat based one, holds water better and has the guts to feed hungry plants! Did you know – in ancient Rome celery was considered an aphrodisiac, scientists today know that celery contains androsterone, a pheromone released by male sweat glands (Yuk! I’ll never eat it again!) Remember- one years seed is seven years weed, make sure you get all the little blighters! Chris Early

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY

GARDENING IN JUNE

We are very sad to report that our club President, Mrs Dwynwen Jones, passed away on May 2nd and her funeral service was held at Trinity Church, Porthcawl. The flower club was a very important part of Dwynwen’s life and became even more so after the death of her husband Rob. Dwynwen was chairman of the club for many years, a position she undertook with pride and enthusiasm. She promoted the club whenever she could and was especially proud when the club was invited to participate in the Town Council’s annual Music and Flower Festival at All Saints Church. Four years ago, following the death of Sylvia Lewis, a founder member of the club, Dwynwen became the new President, showing the high regard in which she was held by everyone. She held both roles until last year when she reluctantly was forced to relinquish the chairmanship because of her ill-health which she bore with great courage and fortitude. Dwynwen was a lovely lady. It was a privilege to know her. We will miss her very much. Mair Stockford

Always something to do in the garden whatever the month, but now the risk of frost has passed the annual summer bedding plants can be planted out. Containers, hanging baskets can be started. If you have them growing on in a greenhouse they can be moved outside to their final position. Make time to thin out hardy annuals, to make room for new additions to the border. Remember to divide overcrowded clumps of bulbs, one job less in September. Pinch out the tips of Fuchsias it will encourage them to “bush” and to flower more. Continue to earth up potato plants and if you are growing potatoes in bags simply add more compost to halfway up the plant stem. There is still time to plant runner beans- sow directly in the ground now. Laleston Gardening Club Committee would like to thank all who came and supported the club at the annual plant sale. It was a very successful morning. Most all of the 6000 plants were sold. The ladies coffee morning was also well attended, and there was a happy buzz all over Cliff Cottage that day. Many thanks to the Bridgend Scouts for their willing help . Gwen Bradford

Health KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

Saturday 30th of April was the day Porthcawl Rotarians invited residents and visitors to have their blood pressure measured. A total of 165 called in to Trinity Church to avail themselves of this free test. Of this number 22 were advised to visit the doctor within the next month, and one person was advised to make an urgent appointment. High blood pressure is a major contributory factor to heart disease and stroke and it contributes to nine million deaths globally each year. Hopefully, the Rotary Club of Porthcawl in conjunction with the Stroke Association, have helped raise awareness of how important it is for people to have their blood pressure checked and how important it is to remember that high blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. Rotarians are extremely grateful to all the volunteers who worked throughout the day, especially the health care professionals who gave their time so freely. For further information about stroke and the Stroke Association please visit www.stroke.org.uk Further information about Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland can be found at www.rotary-ribi.org Picture shows: First Minister, Carwyn Jones, with nurse Helen Chappell and Rotarians Dr. Colin Williams and Sandra Townsend.

THICKENED NAILS Thickened nails, a common nail condition, can cause the nails to become unsightly, discoloured, crumbly and often very difficult to cut. Many do not seek professional advice as they become embarrassed about their appearance. COMMON CAUSES Fungal Nail - A fungal nail infection is one of the most common causes of thickened nails. This can often be detected by the nail turning a yellow or brown colour before it begins to thicken. Ill-fitting Footwear - Major trauma to the nail can be caused by repetitive, long-term pressure from shoes that are either too small or too narrow over the toes. Psoriasis - People suffering with this long-term condition are also prone to nail psoriasis. This has similar effects where the nail can become pitted and discoloured. TREATMENTS Effective treatment for thickened nails is dependent on the underlying cause. * Ensure that nails are cut and filed regularly, carefully reducing the thickness of the nail. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, contact a Foot Health Professional. * Reduce further pressure by replacing ill-fitting footwear. * Seek treatment for fungal nail infections from your GP or Foot Health Professional. HOW EXERCISE PROTECTS AND IMPROVES BRAIN FUNCTION Previous research has demonstrated that exercise promotes brain health by releasing hormones like brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) from the muscles, which encourage the growth of new brain cells. This process is known as neurogenesis or neuroplasticity. Your brain’s memory centre (hippocampus) is particularly adaptable and capable of growing new cells throughout your entire lifetime, even into your 90s, provided your lifestyle supports it. In one study, exercising mice grew an average of 6,000 new brain cells in every cubic millimeter of hippocampal tissue sampled. Similarly, a year-long human study found that adults who exercised regularly enlarged their brain’s memory centre by 1 to 2 percent per year, where typically the hippocampus tends to shrink with age. Besides provoking beneficial hormone release, exercise also helps protect and improve your brain function by improving and increasing blood flow to your brain, increasing production of nerve-protecting compounds, improving development and survival of neurons. Arts STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

THE LiTTLE DEER GALLERY is an art gallery, shop and studio space located on the Old stone bridge in Bridgend. The gallery sells a variety of mediums such as screen prints, textile art, jewellery, ceramics and photography. Owner Stephanie Duckett set up the gallery in November 2015 to increase public access to contemporary art and create a commercial platform for both established and up and coming artists who are UK based with many coming from Wales. Stephanie Duckett is a full time ceramicist making and selling her work from her studio which is based at the gallery. She also offers hand building workshops for children and adults at the studio. All the information about the workshops is on the website www.littledeergallery.com! You can also keep up to date with gallery info on Facebook.com/thelittledeergallery and Instagram@thelittledeergallery

ART IN FOCUS The must see this month at The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff is Rembrandt’s The Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet. It was painted at a time when Rembrandt was producing his most prolific and exceptional works. What is so intriguing about this piece, painted in 1657, just a year after Rembrandt had to claim insolvency, is the face of Catrina herself. She sits before us in her refinery appearing to gaze into a space unoccupied, where in fact her pet parakeet emerges from the darkened background as a ghostly apparition. Her dress reveals she belonged to a strict religious order, who would have frowned on such displays of wealth. She was separated from her preacher husband at the time, so she must have been strongly independent to sustain such an unconventional lifestyle, in both character and financially. Her steadfast gaze reveals a woman who was strong in the face of adversity, perhaps Rembrandt himself identified with her at a time in his life when he had lost everything. This fitting and authoritative portrait is on show for the next three years and most definitely worth a closer viewing. It seems that every month some top celebrity or pop icon is passing away. I read on Facebook something that said “Would all rock stars over 55 go and see a doctor, quick!” Well, I’m not that age but I did get a check-up! Every morning I have a stretch in bed and if my elbows don’t touch wood, it’s gonna be a great day! On a sadder note yet again, I’ve got to report the passing of Phil Ryan. Phil, who hailed from Cwmavon, was keyboard player with legendary Welsh prog band Man, which had a huge following in the UK and America, with a string of hit albums in the Seventies. In 1978 Phil produced my band’s Warchild album in 1.2.3 Studios, Bute Street, Cardiff. He was a fantastic musician and top guy – we’ll miss him but Man’s music lives on. Not too much to report on the local scene but things will no doubt be hotting up and I’ll be about, checking the live venues. Saw a brilliant duo called Clone Utopia, which features my old mate G on guitar. Finally, a big thanks to Ezra’s Andy Edwards for the VIP passes for Magnum’s concert, but couldn’t attend as it was my minder’s birthday! JAZZ CLUB Porthcawl Jazz Club is delighted to welcome back TJ Johnson and his band to the Stage Door on 27th July. TJ plays an extraordinary blend of music that transcends the boundaries of jazz, blues, soul, country and gospel and is influenced by some of the greats such as Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, BB King and Nina Simone. At Upton Jazz Festival last year he played to a packed audience at 11 o’clock in the morning. He sang, he swung, and seats were at a premium for the whole of his set. He even had to source a seat for his mother when she arrived late, interrupting the programme in order to do so! Needless to say this only added to the rapport TJ has with his audience. If you like jazz and blues you will love TJ’s distinctive voice and his unique personal stage manner which always brings both the band and the audience together to create an intimate yet exciting atmosphere that is rarely equalled. Don’t miss one of the highlights of this years Jazz Club. For more information please contact the Box Office on 01656 815995. Sue Scott Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Arts VINCE JAMES Introducing an exciting new artist VINCE JAMES who is an emerging talent from Bridgend. The whiskey soaked vocals of the front man combined with simple and skillfully constructed songs are creating interest with local radio DJs and music lovers. The songs tell a true story about life growing up in a remote town in South Wales. He began writing songs at the age of sixteen and after many years performing and busking he met a Welsh music producer Adam Richards. Since that meeting VINCE JAMES came into existence and has since developed his own individual sound, which is a captivating blend of folk, indiepop and country. With the full band lineup they are set to perform at a variety of festivals this year including ‘Live on the Wye’, ‘Devauden’, ‘Caerphilly Big Cheese’ and ‘Busk till dawn’. Keep up to date on social media. VINCE JAMES has released the debut single ‘Forget Last Night’ through BeeLine Records and has since signed to a management deal. The single is available from all digital stores. The music video is available to watch on youtube. GUESS WHERE WE ARE?

POPPY APPEAL CONCERT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH

This proved to be a successful charity concert with three singing organizations participating. Porthcawl Male Choir opened the proceedings singing six pieces. The song ‘Tell My Father’ was particularly relevant to the occasion with Phil Davies singing the solo section. The trio of Bethan Thomas (soprano), Angharad Edwards (harp), and Meinir Davies (alto), gave wonderful renditions of five numbers. Sounds Familiar entertained the audience in the second half singing six pieces, the last of which was Eli Jenkins Prayer. The formal proceedings were then conducted, and it was pleasing to here the special thanks of the Chairman (on behalf of the organizers) to our Nev Evans for his unstinting commitment to Poppy selling for the past 30 years. Porthcawl Male Choir now look forward to their annual concert on Saturday 3rd September with their special guest Wyn Evans. Tickets will be on sale soon and will be available, initially, from choir members. Information can be obtained from the secretary Viv Griffiths Tel: 01656 788128 or Howard Evans 01656 784325.

BUSY TIMES FOR LOCAL SINGER SONGWRITER AHNUH VALENTINE

Choristers from Cor Bro Ogwr were in a different choral uniform the weekend of May 8th, when some of us joined 1400 other singers at The Royal Albert Hall, London, for a performance of Verdi’s Requiem. Organised by The Big Chorus, keen singers came from 12 countries for the experience of rehearsal and concert under the baton of Brian Kay. It turned out to be the hottest weekend of the year but we kept our cool as the conductor put us through our paces. We all agreed that the orchestra and soloists were wonderful and the sound of so many choristers was spine tingling. It was also a social event of course; we have gone on trips together many times and we have become a community of friends. We stopped at Newbury for lunch on the way there, had time in London for whatever took our fancy - museums, theatre, shopping or just walking in the park, and visited Windsor for a few hours on our return. Unfortunately it was raining as we arrived back but our spirits weren’t dampened! It’s back to rehearsing for our summer concert, on July 15th. Dominique Spearey www.cor-bro-ogwr.com www.seasidenews.co.uk

Local student, Lexi Richmond, who performs under the stage name Ahnuh Valentine can be seen gracing many venues across South Wales this summer! Ahnuh from Bridgend, who recently released an album of original material ‘Leather and Lace’ will be playing a rare local gig on Saturday 28th May at Ye Old Winehouse (Tap) in Pyle, 9pm til’ late! Ahnuh recently performed at the ‘Social Evening With A Difference’, held by BCBC in conjunction with the Mayor of Bridgend and would like to say many thanks to The Mayor of Bridgend along with Mari Major for booking her as evening entertainment for the 7th year in a row. Thank you for your continued support of a local artist! Ahnuh would also like to say “A huge thank you to Bridgend College for choosing me as their Guest Speaker at their recent Aspire Programme!” The Aspire Programme is a female mentoring programme aimed at building confidence, developing relationships, supporting, inspiring and empowering the female students facing challenges in Bridgend College. Ahnuh states “It was a pleasure, as a former student, to share my story with people currently studying at Bridgend College.” Head to Ahnuh’s website www.ahnuhvalentine.com to view all her upcoming gigs and recent music releases. Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW In less than a year’s time, Porthcawl will be commemorating the 70th anniversary of the S.S. Samtampa and Mumbles lifeboat disaster of 23rd April 1947, and it hardly seems possible that it is now nearly twenty years since I brought out the film Dangerous Coast, telling the story of the tragedy in which all 39 crew members of the Samtampa, and all eight lifeboatmen, lost their lives. I am very pleased that efforts are being made to come up with a suitable memorial in the town, and I intend putting a short supporting documentary film together to accompany the re-release of my film next year. It is one of those tragic events, of almost unbelievable proportions, that the town should never forget, and I would like to take this opportunity to remind readers that the models of the Samtampa and the lifeboat Edward, Prince of Wales, used in the film, are both on show in Porthcawl Museum. For those of you who wonder why the U.S.-built Liberty ship was given such a name (it was originally called the Pelag Wadsworth), the Sam part stood for Superstructure Aft of Midships, with the name Tampa added to the end. It will forever be part of Porthcawl’s history. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions 07510 934299 Pictures: S.S. Samtampa and Mumbles lifeboat Edward, Prince of Wales

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY In addition to some great presentations, we also held our annual Club Competition Three, which is split into two sections, Print and Digital, with a trophy for each. Members could enter two images into each section. Gareth Martin skilfully judged the competition, awarded the points and provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner of the Print Trophy was Richard Craze for “Just before the Rain”. Second place was shared between Glyn Edmunds and Richard Craze. Third place was shared between David Jones and Geoff Baker. The winner of the Digital Trophy was Glyn Edmunds with “The Fight”. Second place was shared between Jeff Evans and Richard Craze. Third place was shared between Philip Harrowing, David Jones, Richard Jenkins and Richard Craze. Congratulations to both Richard and Glyn for winning the competitions and a big thank you to all who participated for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. We are also working with Porthcawl Town Council for the Flower & Music Festival on 18th June and the Porthcawl Photography Competition until 1st July. POEMS SPAM, JAM & AUNTY POLLY

Homemade coloured rag mats with sacking squares peeping through. My Aunt Polly made by the light of a gas mantle, But forgot to put in blue. Aunt Polly also made seasonal ginger beer, and corked with a china top with spring. And after my first class totally forgot about my Ankle rash stings. Aunt Polly also made rose hip jam, This I may add a refreshing change from pickle and spam. Where is this story going you may wonder, and ask? Did Aunt Polly forage for fruit and make a jam blunder? Rag mats, jam, spam and ginger beer This poem you may think sounds more like a folly! But I’m sure you guessed by now it’s just my warm fond memories of my dear Aunt Polly. Alun Davies, Porthcawl

A TRIP TO THE BEACH

Today I took my children to the beach to play, but it wasn’t long before we left for the day. It wasn’t the weather that cut short our trip, It was a much nastier kind of blip! I couldn’t let them run free, Or let them toddle by the sea. I couldn’t let them use their hands, to build a castle or feel the sands. What lurks along the path you ask, what terror does the sand mask? What could be so awful on little shoes? What on tiny hands gives mammy the blues? Would it be accepted if I threw a nappy on the floor? Or leave its contents by somoene’s door? Im not blaming everyone for the problems we face, But I hope those to blame see that this is a disgrace. Let the children have their fun, It can be a place for everyone. If only some people would think a bit, and just pick up their doggies S*@t. Sian Hamlton-Howell, Kenfig Hill

A COAL MINERS DAY

A coal miner is a man of strength and grit As he descends the dark and dismal pit, A battery on his belt and a light on his head A tommy box in a bag to hold his jam and bread, A flask of water to swill down the dust In the dust and heat water is a must, He may walk miles to his working place Where he takes off his shirt and strips to the waist His sweat gleaming body is no disgrace, The coal seam is there so big and so black With pick and shovel he will attack, His mighty strokes as he cuts the coal The coal tumbles down to cover the floor, He cuts some timber to hold up the roof For him to be safe he must have some proof, He shovels the coal to fill up the tram He fills it up as fast as he can, He cuts more coal another tram waits It’s now time for food he must have a break It’s bread and jam but it tastes so great, It’s twenty minutes and its back to work He could stay longer but he will not shirk, He checks the time, his tools are secured He has done his best of that he is sure, It’s time to go home from this cheerless place A ride in the cage up to the surface, He hands in his lamp that has lighted his way In that dreary place for his safety he prays, With blackened face he walks down the street With heavy boots upon his feet, He enters the hall of his beloved home Where he takes off his boots and dirty attire To have a hot bath in front of the fire. Basil Walters Cefn Glas, Bridgend

A MORNING PRAYER

(based on Psalm 5) Hear me, my God, To you I cry Who else will help or hear my sigh? With confidence I now will pray Make my request at break of day I know you hear, so quiet wait For help to come, ‘twill not be late The arrogant and full of pride You will not hear, you hate their lies But, while I love with heart and might Show me the path that leads aright Yes, with my soul and all my mind In You alone I refuge find And shielded by your wings of love Sing songs of joy to God above Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

IN A VERY SPECIAL PERSONAL WAY

When you first start hearing spirits, You don’t really have much choice, It makes you think what’s happening, Because you hear another voice. Some get very emotionally happy, Others feel really sad, Then you get the non-believers, Who think they are simply going mad. Many medium give comforting words, Working with the spiritual word each day, Learning to understand the communication, In a very special personal way. They will get a voice, a vision or impression, To help the spirit messages to begin, To communicate a meaningful message, To their loved ones still living. Many have not asked to be mediums, They just use the gift they had from birth, To help others feel comfort and happiness, Whilst they are still on this earth. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

Sport TAP IT OUT CC

The ladies section rides are now under way, and all new attendees have put away their nerves and are starting to enjoy cycling in a group. The idea of the ladies group and the club in general is to help get people cycling with a group of like-minded people and destroy the old cycling club stigma of “it’s all about speed and I’ll never keep up”. At Tap it out cc we try and cater for a range of cyclists, from leisure rider, ladies and to the more competitive cyclist. So to all the people we see battling the wind on their own, please come along and give us a try. Club rides are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and also a shift workers ride posted most days on Facebook. Club Chain gang, in partnership with ONITSPORTS race team, has started on Tuesdays. All new members welcome so any questions please contact me on nickemorgan@hotmail.co.uk. Stay safe and KEEP ON TAPPING. Nicky Morgan

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARDS NEWS The Nippers have been busy dusting off their wetsuits and enjoying the warmer weather with some sea training in anticipation of the [hopefully!] long hot summer ahead. The normal Sunday afternoon sessions have been added to with the recommencement of the Tuesday evening training. [6 o’clock at the club, in the sea at 6.30]. These sessions are a lot of fun, and teaches the kids essential lifesaving skills as well as getting them fit. We have seen many new faces this year, and if anyone else would like to come and give us a try, then pop along to the club and have a look. Parents are also encouraged to join in if they can, and if the adults fancy a challenge, then why not start training for our Annual “Round the Bay Swim” which takes place this year on August 14th. There’s the option of a short [750m] or long [1500m] course, and its a great challenge. Finally, we now have our webcam up and running, so if you want to check out whats happening on the beach, or any information about the club, then go to our website. www.porthcawlifeguards. co.uk. THE RAINBOW GOLFERS 18 senior members of St. Mary’s Golf Club visited West Wales recently on their three day annual tour. Organiser Joe Davis suggested that it be a more colourful event this year after his recovery from ill health. The elderly members formed a rainbow as can be seen in the photo. Six teams in orange, blue, yellow, red, blue and green - no they are not the recycling men in orange! Lots of fun was had by all, thanks to Joe’s superb organization, as usual - and the weather was kind too! Carol Thomas Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

PORTHCAWL RNLI LIFEBOAT CREWS GET SURPRISE £5000 DONATION
