LETTERS REGENERATION SURVEY Dear Editor, In November/December, the Porthcawl Civic Trust Society ran a survey to determine the views of Porthcawl’s residents regarding BCBC’s regeneration plan for the town. Unfortunately, due to adverse weather conditions and problems caused by Covid, large swaths of the town were missed and, as a result, the number of responses was less than hoped for. However, by the end of December, 147 questionnaire forms had been returned and a report on the findings has now been completed. A copy of the report, one can be obtained by emailing porthcawlcivictrust@ hotmail.co.uk . Briefly, residents were asked 4 questions including whether they agreed with BCBC proposal to build in excess of 328 dwellings on Salt Lake and a further 912 on the Sandy Bay/Coney Beach Amusement Park site. The survey showed that, of the 147 replies, 14 respondents were in favour of some form of housing on Salt Lake while 51 were prepared to accept a number of homes on the Sandy Bay/Coney Beach Amusement Park site. The three main reasons for opposing BCBC’s plan were: 1. An increase of an estimated 3000 residents would put more pressure on health provision and schools; 2. The loss of Salt Lake car park would discourage visitors and have an adverse effect on trade. It would also make it more difficult for residents to carry out their shopping in the town, especially those with mobility problems, and result in more parking in residential streets; 3. Porthcawl needs more amenities not more housing. Coincidentally, since the survey has been completed, BCBC has revised its plan for Salt Lake. However, Salt Lake will still be lost as a car park and the intention is still to build about 1100 dwellings on the 2 sites. This clearly fails to meet the aspirations of residents. The Society will continue with its efforts to persuade BCBC to enter into meaningful consultation with residents of the town that are the main stakeholders. Don Tickner, Porthcawl For the Porthcawl Civic Trust Society

PORTHCAWL’S HIDDEN TREASURE Dear Editor, I visited Porthcawl Museum earlier in the month and wanted to write in and say what a fantastic job everyone there is doing & to encourage anyone and everyone to grab their friends and family and head down! I had always known there was (or used to be) a museum in Porthcawl but had never really thought to visit until my Grandma mentioned that she would be volunteering there – having not been there since I was younger I had no idea what to expect. Straight away it was clear to see how much hard work they’ve put in to build an incredibly informative and enjoyable museum centered on the history of Porthcawl. I couldn’t believe the attention to detail and how much I didn’t know about the place I’ve lived for most of my life. There are lots of rooms all focusing on a different time or part of Porthcawl’s history – I learnt so much when I was there and would really recommend that anyone with a spare hour or two makes their way to the museum to take a look. Seeing old pictures of Porthcawl, reading stories about events that took place here and the various anecdotes shared with us made the visit so worthwhile – a big thanks to them all for their time and hard work! We’ll definitely be back again! Alex Winkler, Dorking 8 | seaside news

LIFEBOAT OFFICIALLY NAMED

Dear Editor, The RNLI’s new D Class lifeboat was named in memory of Hugo Missen in beautiful sunshine in front of a crowd of hundreds of invited guests and onlookers. With performances from both the South Wales Police band and Porthcawl Male Voice Choir it was a very special, memorable and at times emotional day. Hugo was the son of Helm Joe Missen and his fiancé Jessica Entwistle and was the grandson of Porthcawl RNLI’s Lifeboat Operations Manager, Philip Missen MBE. Hugo lost his courageous fight against cancer aged just 15 months in December 2016. The D Class lifeboat arrived at Porthcawl lifeboat station on 26 January 2022 and has already been launched on service four times, two of which were to assist vessels in distress. Helm Chris Page who was instrumental in getting the new D Class named after Hugo Missen handed the D Class lifeboat over into the care of the RNLI, which was accepted on behalf of the charity by Mark Wordsworth an RNLI trustee. The lifeboat was accepted on behalf of Porthcawl RNLI by Mark Broadway a crewmember at Porthcawl. D861 Hugo Missen has been funded by several donors from restricted funds. Mark Wordsworth, RNLI trustee spoke of the 11 lives saved by Porthcawl RNLI volunteers during 2021 – the most lives saved by any RNLI station in Wales and how the new lifeboat Hugo Missen would go on to save even more. Every one involved in Porthcawl RNLI lifeboat station are delighted to have been given the opportunity to have a new lifeboat named after Hugo Missen. Following the ceremony the new lifeboat was paraded along the seafront back to the lifeboat station led by the South Wales Police band. The new lifeboat was then launched from the slipway where it performed a short demonstration both in the harbour area and then off the seafront in front of the Seabank Hotel. BOOK OF THE MONTH Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudgeholder who falls in love with - of all things - her mind. True chemistry results. But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later, Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six.

HISTORY NEWTON NOTTAGE GOLF CLUB CLOSES Newton Nottage Golf Club, which was opened on 1st October 1919, closed in June 1922. The new nine-hole golf club, which ran behind Mackworth Road, was created for the artisans of the town with an initial subscription of one guinea. Although its end was mainly attributed to the lack of support from the town, according to the ‘Porthcawl News’ (May 1922) the “golfing enthusiasm which has taken root in Pyle and Kenfig has brought into possibility one of the finest courses in the country,” had already began attracting members from the Newton Nottage Club. By the end of the month Frederick Lord, Captain, addressed the final general meeting held at the Carlton Café, John Street, (Indicated on photo. Balcony is Spar today) proposing that the offer of a merger with P&K be accepted. During its short existence however, Newton Nottage GC had left its mark on Welsh Golf. The club had twice been runners-up in the Welsh Team Championships whilst E.R. Rowe had been runner-up at the Welsh Closed Championship, held at Aberdovey in 1921. The appearance at the Welsh team Championships at Tenby in June proved to be the club’s last competition. It was recorded at the final meeting, “We trust that P&K will carry on the good work.” Ceri Joseph

MEET MY ANCESTORS

The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were periods of great religious conflict, which resulted in many people entering, and leaving, the Netherlands and the Low Counties. Antwerp witnessed an exodus of fifty percent while the city of Hondschoote saw a decline of 18,000 to 385 inhabitants. My 11 x great grandparents Jacob Quick (1547 – 1604) and Wilhelm Steenberg (1582–1613) joined this migration. At the turn of the sixteenth century, Jacob and Wilhelm arrived in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. Apart from the quest for religious freedom, what drew them there? The answer was lead. For centuries the people of Wirksworth had relied on lead mining to make a living and by the 1600s lead had become as important to the national economy as wool. In the mines, flooding was a problem. Therefore, in search of a solution, the locals turned to people who were experts at drainage and flood defences – the Dutch. Jacob Quick and Wilhelm Steenburg settled into their new lives in Derbyshire. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

ART EXHIBITION

“Last Flight to Pluto”, the Porthcawl and Bridgend-based rock band, release their new album, “Random Karma, Fate and Destiny”, on White Knight Records. This time around sees the band playing their ace card with singer Alice Freya’s sublime vocals the driving force on this brilliant album. The songs are more radio friendly than their last C.D., and there is plenty to offer, like rockers “Stop Yourself From Turning Into Dust”, “White Noise”, “Some of Us”, “Around the Corner” and the chilling “Stay Out Of My Head”, the band’s new video. If there is a standout number, it’s the sad and poignant ballad “Any News”, a song about a double loss with Alice’s emotional voice making it all the more haunting – it would make a good single release. Alice and drummer Daz wrote all the songs and the musicianship is exemplary. The C.D. is available from the record company or the band’s website. “Pluto” will be playing the Phil Fest at the Hi Tide on 1st July in memory of Phil Jones along with many more acts. Finally, well done to Nin Rixon and the Tusker Rock team for their recent Ukraine charity event held at The Seagull, Rest Bay. It was a packed evening and a huge success! Porthcawl Art society opened their new exhibition at Easter. Society members from the local area displayed their skill, which was judged by the mayor, Tracy Hill. The worthy winner was a beautiful pastel painting of a ‘Majestic’ stag by Jan Hoskins. Jeff Barnes’ portrait of ‘Jo’ was second and third prize went to a local scene of Moor Lane by Wendy Davies-Williams. The competition paintings on a theme of ‘spring’ are judged by the public visitors. The gallery in John Street is open most days 11-3pm, all welcome to come along and enjoy the artworks. We are also open to new members if you wish to join this friendly group. www.porthcawlart.co.uk

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Special effects have existed ever since the earliest days of the cinema because the need has often arisen to produce scenes that are too expensive, or difficult, or even simply impossible to achieve using conventional methods. Many of the earliest effects were carried out “in camera”, such as stop motion, or glass shots, where part of a scene is painted on a sheet of clear glass, which is then mounted carefully in front of the camera. The more complicated optical effects, such as “travelling matte”, required the involvement of the laboratory. And then there was the use of scaled-down miniature models. The introduction of computer-generated imagery (CGI) radically changed the world of special effects and opened up fantastic new opportunities hitherto considered impossible to achieve, but there is still a place for tried-and-tested methods for producers like myself who continue to work in traditional celluloid. My documentary “Dangerous Coast” had a number of special effects shots, provided by General Screen Enterprises of Uxbridge in 1997 and now, twenty-five years later, I am planning the effects needed on my Llandow Air Disaster film and I will have more to say about that in Seaside News next month. POEMS THE BEGINNING OF THE END D-Day Part One

‘Long sobs of autumn violins’, plays on the radio, Our whispers of freedom begin to amplify, There will be an end to our sorrow, Soon, the Nazi regime will die. In two weeks Fritz will collapse, In two weeks Normandy will be free, In two weeks their bitter blood will run from the taps, In two weeks Hitler’s torturous command will no longer be. ‘Wound my heart with a monotonous languor’, we hear, Although those words fall deaf on corrupt ears, Our righteous goal is clear, To give the Nazis hell along with all their peers. In twenty-four hours we will fell the trees, In twenty-four hours we will cause a helluva fuss, In twenty-four hours the Nazi juggernaut will be on its knees, In twenty-four hours we will remove those who persecuted us. I do not worry if I am punished, Nor do I worry about the hound that hunts me, For all tyranny will be vanquished, And we shall raise a toast to our heroic victory. Rhys Jones, North Cornelly

SOLUTION Lower the heating! Cut down on eating! Don’t bath, take a shower for less! The rising cost of energy, Is causing much distress. Experts offer their solutions, Be it wind or be it sun, Wind may not blow, sun may not shine, When all is said and done. Remember, we are an island, Surrounded by a sea. An extremely powerful constant, That is always going to be. Water is an asset, It’s been utilised before. There’s sufficient power in those waves To depend on it once more. Why not make use of all that water, Harness the power it provides. May the future of our energy, Be determined by the tides. Catherine Millard Payne, Bridgend 18 | seaside news

I FOUND A JOB

NO GRAVEN IMAGE

I found a job in sunny Porthcawl, 44 Apartments Standing tall.

What skills describe the glory of One Who made man from the dust of the earth? By the word of his power called forth moon, stars and sun, Each sphere of infinite worth.

Many kind Residents And all so happy, Even though their building Was a little tatty. So in the January We upped our sticks And thought it through To try to fix. A washer arrived With many a smile Our lovely residents Had waited a while. Now onto the roof, As the storms were harsh We need it repaired And made to last. Scaffolding arrived At 8.15 Lots of lads And oh so keen. We’re surrounded by metal But that’s ok The maintenance men Will arrive one day. The leaks will stop No rain will come down Our residents will smile And no longer frown The ‘good’ tumble drier Was next to break A part was ordered So our hearts Won’t break The Office is open So please come in Your new Manager Susan works from within So we all pull together At Pavilion Court And all future buyers Our apartments Will be bought As we have the sea And many nice shops And delicious Ice cream There sure is lots. Susan Burns, Porthcawl

Then why should we seek by our skills to describe A God greater than all we desire, With metal you hid in the bowels of the earth To form a god who comes out of the fire? Know that your Maker may not be defined By skills that to you he has given For only through Christ can his glory be known As we enter the Kingdom of heaven Then may we not think of our God as too small Or shrink him to what we desire But with trembling and awe draw near through the Son And find him who’s revealed in the fire. Exodus 20: 4-6 Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

50 OVER 50 Fifty over fifty A challenge has been set. I had to make a list Of targets to be met. Some were walks in nature, Others hobby based. Careful plans were needed, Don’t act in too much haste. I’ve knitted little daffodils For St David’s Day. Also little Easter chicks To donate to Age UK. I’ve taken ‘postcard’ photos Of some stunning views. Now I’ve done this poem To send to Seaside News. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

COST OF CANCER NEWS

HOW CAN I BE HAPPY?

January seems a long time ago doesn’t it but finally we are now in a position to announce the amount raised for this year’s Step Up for January. It was £2565 which is the most we’ve raised for this event. Again, thank you to everyone who took part, I know personally it’s not easy and also to those who donated. We’ve successfully managed to help 4 families this year with another a further 6 families who have made contact with us and are in process of applying, with more families getting in touch all the time. It’s down to you guys why we’re able to help, so THANK YOU. We have the charity ball coming up in October but before that 4 people including myself and 1 of the charity’s trustees are doing the Euro 3 City Cycle in September. There’s still time to sign up and take part. If you do want to sign up, please do get in touch. It would be great if we had a bigger team taking part. Are you going through treatment for cancer or perhaps you know someone who is finding life a struggle whilst they are going through treatment for Cancer? Then get in touch. If you know someone tell them about us and what we do so they may choose to contact us. Finally, please do follow us on all social media platforms and remember we help those who are finding life a struggle financially whilst going through treatment for Cancer. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees

How, when I have so many worries? Yet a wise man once said, the purpose of life is to be happy. Who is the wise one? The one who says to be happy is your life’s purpose or the one who says it is not possible. Strangely enough it doesn’t matter who is right it only matters which view you choose to believe. The wise man is the Dalai Lama, forced to flee his homeland because an invading army wanted to harm him, yet he chose to be happy. So how big is the worry that is preventing one’s happiness today? We have an average life span of seventy-five years and each of us has a daily choice either to be uplifted or to be worn down by life. In a moment every day we can choose to feel uplifted or down hearted. You may be outside and choose to focus on the disrepair of the roads or be glad you are able to drive a car, cycle or walk. Like the wise man, take notice of unexpectedly pleasant moments, maybe someone leaving you go before them in a queue and smile. This is how a happy life begins with the small things. Margaret Brown

CYCLING WITHOUT AGE Each month brings progress towards our goal of providing free Trishaw rides along the glorious Porthcawl seafront for the older residents within our community. We have a growing number of supporters who are key to driving the project forward and we are immensely thankful for their efforts so far. We are now in a position to register as a charity (or Charitable Incorporated Organisation to be exact) having secured the necessary number of trustees and we can move forward to establish a fundraising campaign to hopefully have the Trishaws in place during the late summer. Efforts are ongoing to establish a storage base and charging facilities and we are talking to a number of partners to try and locate a suitable venue in the very near future. If you wish to find out more, please use the link below to review the origins of the Cycling Without Age initiative, which has become a worldwide success story. We hope to make Porthcawl a member of this worldwide family in the coming months. Our next open meeting is on Tuesday 7th June at the YMCA in John Street starting at 7.00pm. All are welcome. https://cyclingwithoutage.org.uk 20 | seaside news

FOODS HIGH IN VITAMIN D

We know that vitamin D affects many bodily functions, including bone health. Research also suggests that low vitamin D levels may be a risk factor for autoimmune diseases. Many people don’t get enough vitamin D. It’s hard to know how many people are deficient because experts are still debating about what target levels should be. Research suggests that about 24% of people in the United States are vitamin D deficient. Other areas of the world may have higher rates of deficiency. It’s estimated that in Europe, about 40% of the population has vitamin D deficiency. Some foods high in Vitamin D are Salmon, Herring, Sardines, Cod liver oil, Canned Tuna and Egg yokes. Other than fortified foods, mushrooms are the only sufficient non-animal source of vitamin D. Like humans, mushrooms can synthesize vitamin D when exposed to UV light. Some wild mushrooms are excellent sources of vitamin D2 because of their exposure to UV light. 1 10/05/20 Morels are a type of mushroom that grows in 16 thepage.pdf wild. One cup of these mushrooms contains 136 IU of vitamin D, which is 17% of the daily DV. COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP FUNDS

TAX CHANGES THREATEN HOLIDAY LETS

Town centres used to be vibrant places filled with shoppers patronising local businesses but the rise of internet shopping has led to decline in many areas. However, the Welsh Labour Government has the means to fight back and to ensure that our towns not only survive but thrive. Instead, they continue to punish businesses with the highest business rates in the UK. If action were taken to reduce this burden alone, then many more shops would stay solvent. Welsh Conservatives at the Senedd have outlined their proposals to build stronger, safer communities which include putting power back into the hands of local people so that they decide where new housing and other developments should be located – something that Porthcawl residents have been calling for in relation to plans for Salt Lake in particular. Welsh Conservatives are also campaigning for community facilities like pubs, shops and libraries to be taken over by local residents - as already happens in England. Community Ownership Funds in Wales would have the ability to unlock the potential to revitalise their neighbourhoods – but is a lost opportunity under Labour in Wales at the moment We deserve better!

I am totally opposed to the highly damaging tourism tax changes, which the Welsh Labour Government is seeking to introduce. Apart from a daily levy which all visitors would have to pay to stay in a hotel, guest house or caravan, Labour is also proposing to make sweeping changes to the way in which self-catering lets are rated. Under the plans, they would have to be let for 182 days a year instead of the present 70. All those that fail to meet that threshold will no longer qualify to pay business rates and would instead pay domestic rates as a second home – and all councils in Wales will have the right to increase council tax on second homes by up to 300 per cent. Welsh Government should do everything it can to help our tourism sector rather than punish it. This double whammy will cost jobs and see many self-catering businesses go under. Holiday lets draw people into our communities who then patronise local shops, pubs and restaurants. They also employ staff to clean and maintain the properties. I fear people will be driven away by these changes and choose to take their custom elsewhere to the detriment of towns like Porthcawl.

BRIDGEND MENTAL HEALTH PATHWAY There are many mental health support groups in Bridgend and Porthcawl working to make lives better for our community. At a roundtable for Mental Health Awareness month last year, Huw Irranca-Davies MS and myself were asked to co-produce a website where services, local groups and activities could all be in one place. We are now delighted to soon launch the “Bridgend Mental Health Pathway” project – a website that acts as a directory to identify and reach out to early intervention and preventative support groups within Bridgend. The Pathway can be used by residents to find contact information, social media groups and details of local activities to get involved in. Every part of this project has been focused on our community, from founding ideas with Lads and Dads, Mental Health Matters and Bridgend Youth Council, production of the website by Oliver Lewis at OLSO Marketing, to collaboration with Stronger Together Bridgend who are producing music to de-stigmatise mental health. It has been wonderful to facilitate a project by the community, for the community – you can visit the website at: www.bridgendmentalhealthpathway.wales If you are a service who wishes to be added to the site, please email me at sarah.murphy@senedd.wales “ SARAH MURPHY MS Member of the Senedd for Bridgend

A TIME TO CELEBRATE IN BRIDGEND & PORTHCAWL In just a few weeks time, her majesty the Queen celebrates her 70th year on the throne and across Bridgend & Porthcawl, local people will honour a lifetime of service to our country. The Britain of today has looks like a different country, compared with the Britain of 1952, but our one constant during that period has been Her Majesty, the Queen. Whilst this is a national celebration and moment of national pride, local people will be asking how they can recognise this remarkable achievement from our longest reigning monarch in our community, and thankfully, there are lots of celebrations taking place right across Bridgend & Porthcawl. There will be a Beacon Lighting at Rych Point, Porthcawl on the 2nd June from 21:15. I would encourage all to attend and make the most of these momentous celebrations. There will also be street parties taking place right across the Borough, and you can even organise one in your own street. To find out how, please visit www.streetparty.org.uk God Save the Queen! CELEBRATING THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE Hi Everyone, By the time you read this you will hopefully have already celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend and had a ball. Porthcawl Town Council gave out over 70 Celebration cakes to Street Parties. Residential Homes and various Organisations. Coincidently it was also Nottage Primary schools 70th Anniversary too so I am sure the children had a double celebration and had a wonderful party. We are pleased that all the primary Schools have agreed to take part in the Council’s initiative to have a Rose Bush or a Herb Garden. Our thanks go to Pyle Garden Centre for their donation of both.

Plants Swansea and planted by the Mayor of Porthcawl. Lighting of the Beacons, the YMCA Coffee Morning, Three magnificent Choirs on the Friday afternoon in Trinity Church with free coffee and cake, The All Saints Music and Flower Festival with prizes going to the schools best painting, Crowns and drawings. A 90 plus turnout to worship and celebrate the Volunteers of Porthcawl and those honoured by the Queen was held on the Sunday afternoon at Trinity Church under the umbrella of Church’s Together, it was zoomed for those unable to attend, what wonderful technology we have in this day and age… There was singing, dancing and bunting galore. I am sure her Majesty would have been very proud of Porthcawl. C O T best dressed window received an award from PTC when it was judged on Monday, the results will be in the July issue. I personally would like to thank my committee, especially Cannon Philip Masson, Erica Beynon, Lindsey Morgan and all the Council staff for all their help in putting it together with me, not forgetting my husband Bob and Rotary Marshalls at the Beacons of course. It only goes to show how a community can come together. In the July Issue there will be photos so hopefully you will have sent me some.

Some of the towns enjoyable events were the tree planting at the wilderness which was donated by Valley

SCHOOLS NOTTAGE PRIMARY YEAR 4 RESIDENTIAL

After a challenging two years we were delighted to take our Year pupils on their first residential trip. This is the first time at Nottage we have offered a residential trip to our Year 4 pupils to Manor Adventure at Abernant Lake, Llanwrtyd Wells. We couldn’t be anymore proud of the way the conducted themselves, demonstrating independence and maturity beyond their years. Their behaviour was commended not only by the staff of Manor Adventure, but also of the teaching staff of the other visiting schools. All our children challenged themselves, were stretched out of their comfort zone and all developed the essential self-belief and resilience whilst tackling the activities. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff that attended the 3-day course and all of the parents for their support and lovely comments of gratitude. We now look forward to our Year 5 & 6 Outdoor 5 day residential to the Bushcraft Company.

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL Pupils are in the throes of a full season of examinations for the first time since the Summer of 2019. I am immensely proud of the strength of character and resilience that they have shown and know they have exciting times ahead after their exams with their Prom at Miskin Manor on 1st July and Legally Blonde at the Grand Pavilion soon after. A group of our Year 12 students were involved in the Young Enterprise Wales initiative. They have been working as small business teams to design a product. The product was then entered in the Wales area finals located in Coleg y Cymoedd Cardiff on 27th April. This Area Final event brings together student groups from across Wales who have formed a Young Enterprise company this year. As part of the initiative the students displayed and presented their ‘story’ to a panel of four judges from local businesses and public sector organisations. We place particular emphasis on daily reading. At St Clare’s, we deliver the Early Years Foundation Phase curriculum and so much more. Children benefit from subject specialist teaching in Spanish, Music, PE and Drama (Ballet optional) whilst progress-enhancing initiatives such as Forest School are timetabled into the school week. Children have room to grow in our eleven acres of magnificent grounds. In our deliberately smaller classes, staff are able to truly tailor their teaching expertise to pupils’ individual needs and abilities. As pupils progress from Reception through Years 1 and 2, they often demonstrate advanced reading levels for their age. Pupils are encouraged to be innovators and creative and use iPads and Smart boards to enhance teaching and learning. www.stclares-school.co.uk Helen Hier, Head Teacher Photo caption: Now enrolling for September 2022/23

The perfect setting for little learners St Clare's Prep School & Nursery offer weekly Forest School and Spanish, enviable sporting facilities and eleven acres of idyllic grounds to focus on play, exploration and discovery. Deliberately smaller class sizes ensure our teachers can give your child the time, individual attention, academic support and stretch to achieve their full potential. From 2 1/2 years to Sixth Form.

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS

Email us your report to: info@seasidenews.co.uk our next school show, West Side Story, with three evening performances scheduled. We look forward to opening the doors to audiences once again on the 13th, 14th and 15th July. Tickets will be available from school soon Katie Poole Head of Year 10

THE BRIDGE Year 6 have had an exciting summer term with lots of events and activities. They started the term working with CISP - a multimedia production company specialising in cartooning. The children are part of a project working on climate change and coastal erosion. The children’s topic is Sand Dunes and they have really enjoyed creating their designs and seeing them come to life! Eventually their work will be part of a digital resource, which will be displayed in Porthcawl. The children are also busy preparing for their end of year show. After missing the show in 2020 and having to perform outside last year, our Year 6 want to make this year’s show bigger and better than ever! They will be performing Cinderella Rockafella and rehearsals are already well underway. Everyone from the three bears to the fairy godmother are super excited to get on stage later in the year. We are also looking forward to our first residential since the pandemic. We will be going to Manor Adventure at Abernant Lake in Powys. We are looking forward to an action-packed weekend full of raft building, abseiling, zip lining and paddle boarding. Mr Richards Deputy & Yr 6 Teacher

BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE

It’s been another busy month at Bryntirion Comprehensive! Year 9 pupils took part in their Victory for Velindre Enterprise and Employability Challenge pitches. 51 teams pitched their fundraising ideas over two days to a panel of external business experts, with 17 teams winning a place in the school final later in the summer term. Our Performing Arts department were able to welcome back audiences to watch our latest school production, the hit musical Matilda. Pupils from our local primaries and infant schools visited for an exclusive preview during the school day and the doors opened to the public for two sell-out evening performances. It was a spectacular show – funny, poignant, and incredibly entertaining - and a privilege to see our pupils shine on the stage. A massive congratulations to everyone involved! Thank you to all who came to watch the show and who have supported the department over recent weeks. Preparations and rehearsals are already underway for 28 | seaside news

Although we are looking forward to our busy summer term, we started it with sad news; our family liaison officer Lyndsey Vaughan Gibson left to start a new job with the NHS. We’ll miss all your hard work! Our term’s topic is Pits and Ponies and as well as learning historical facts about Victorian child miners, we have tried to link them to our school rights by finding articles which these children didn’t have access to. For example, Article 19: “You have the right to be protected from being hurt or badly treated”. This certainly wasn’t the case for the poor Victorian children! We have been busy planting lots of vegetables and we are planning to sell our tomato plants to raise money for a chosen charity. Years 7,8 and 9 have been doing their national tests in numeracy and Literacy and we want to wish luck to our year 10 and 11 in their GCSEs. Finally, we will be ending our half term celebrating the platinum jubilee, making bunting and preparing sandwiches and cakes for our class. Cameron & Harry

The Joyful incredible talented four musical group being Graham, Berwyn, John and Rob known as the YARDIES, visited the Porthcawl Stroke Club session at the Grove Golf club on the 20th April 2022, where the members enjoyed a brilliant sing-along. Song’s such as Wild Rover, Whiskey in a jar, Take me home country road and many, many more favourites. Graham played guitar, Berwyn was the lead singer who played a guitar and Mandolin, which is a musical instrument resembling a lute, having paired metal strings plucked with a plectrum, John played guitar and Banjo, which I love and Rob who is one of our own, a new comer to the group; as learned to play the guitar in sweet sounding harmony with the others. What a brilliant afternoon that was!! Everyone really had an uplifting jovial time. We are looking forward to seeing the YARDIES again soon, and thanking them all for an excellent entertaining afternoon. The Porthcawl Stroke Club would also like to thank all our supporters and volunteers, who without their support we could not lead such an active and enjoyable life. TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

We are busy working on a another project for Malawi, making solo Auto-repair and carpentry kits , these are kits for an individuals who may have to travel to different work venues after the initial project is complete, also an electrical wiring kit for a group of people. The kits we are making are a small part of a much larger project covering several trades including tailoring. The tailoring kits we are sending will be supporting a two-year training programme for 216 young people. The tailoring group will be making 100 school uniforms initially with more to follow. The carpenters will be making doors, doorframes and school furniture. The electricians will be installing electricity in 40 homes, which have just been connected to an electrical supply. Included in the shipment is a new kit to support training in solar repair and installation. We are exploring this exciting trade development with Youth Code who is a founder member of Kumudzi Kuwale, a thriving social enterprise that operates in the central region of Malawi providing solar services to the local communities. We hope to launch this new training pilot in the coming months to provide a new vocational opportunity to young people in this burgeoning industry. Contact John on 01656 786367 for tool donations. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION - PORTHCAWL So far this year, our station has been involved with 19 incidents, 9 initiated by us and 7 requiring the launch of our neighbours Porthcawl RNLI. Over the past couple of months, we have been increasing the watch hours and times to reflect the lighter mornings and evenings. The station is now open 12 hours a day, 0900hrs – 2100hrs, 7 days a week, with two watchkeepers on each watch. One evening in May, a group of our Watchkeepers were very lucky to be invited to visit HMCG St Athan Rescue Helicopter base to look around their facilities and understand more of what equipment they have and how it is used. Thank you so much to the team at Bristow Helicopters for such a warm welcome. Your knowledge, experience and sheer professionalism was very impressive and comforting, as was your hospitality and enthusiasm. Now the Covid restrictions are finally over, we can welcome visitors up to our Watch Tower. If you are passing, especially if you have children who are interested in seeing the view and equipment, please give us a shout. We would be pleased to show you around, providing we are not involved in an incident. Laurence Bater, Media Officer

FEATURES A CONCERT FOR EASTER

Côr Bro Ogwr held an evening of music for Easter at Bridgend Tabernacle Church on 23rd April, led by the choir’s Musical Director, Ben Pinnow. While the theme of the evening was sombre, the music itself was powerful and uplifting, and the choir was in strong voice as it sang John Stainer’s ‘Crucifixion’, and Welsh favourites ‘Llef’, ‘Llanfair’ and ‘Benedictus’ by Robat Arwyn. While ‘Crucifixion’ isn’t a Verdi Requiem, its simplicity and unpretentiousness lend it an intimacy and directness that made the piece very moving and human. The talented soloists were William Pearson (Tenor) and Simon Pratt (Baritone). Benjamin Teague, a Welsh organist and composer, accompanied the choir on the Tabernacle organ. The choir is now back to a full rehearsal and concert schedule following the disruption of the Covid pandemic. Our summer concert is on Saturday, 16th July, at All Saints Church, Porthcawl, and will include Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’. We are eager to recruit new singers at any time - all voices and all ages. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings, 7.00 - 9.00 pm, in Tabernacle Church, Derwen Road, Bridgend. Please come and join us; no auditions required! www.cor-bro-ogwr.com Judith Fabian

SINGING FOR UKRAINE On Sunday 8th May, in All Saints Church, Porthcawl, The Mid Glamorgan Savoyards came together not for their usual Gilbert & Sullivan Opera, but for a magnificent, heartfelt performance of Karl Jenkins’ “The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace. ” With just 7 weeks to put together the concert, conductor and organiser, Roger Hudd, achieved the near impossible. The company of singers, nearly 60 strong, was particularly well accompanied by a remarkably good locally recruited orchestra, especially in the percussion and trumpet sections. The huge selection of drums was borrowed from Bridgend College. Thanks go to Canon Masson for the use of the Church for most of the rehearsals and performance, and also to Gilgal Church, The HiTide, and Harris Printers for their varied generosity. The concert ended, fittingly, with the choir and orchestra combining to sing the Ukrainian National Anthem. Well over £3,000 has been raised, which is going to a local charity group with Ukrainian family connections; ‘Wales Aid for Ukraine’. They have already undertaken 2 humanitarian trips to Ukraine. This donation, for a third trip, will be used to purchase power generators, medicines, medical equipment, food and baby formula. Dominique Spearey 34 | seaside news

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR Last month saw the much-anticipated tour to the Isle of Wight. The highlight of the tour being a charity concert in aid of Cancer Research held at the beautiful St. Johns church in Sandown. The choir together with their special guest Bronwyn Jones, Granddaughter of Mair our previous Musical Director and accompanist for the evening, were extremely well received and a sum of £575.00 was raised for the charity. Two busloads of choristers, partners and friends made this tour a fantastic success. Many old friendships were rekindled, and a lively postconcert celebration helped ease the memory of tougher times experienced by all. Upcoming events for the choir include, singing for the celebration of the Queens Jubilee at Trinity Church on the 3rd of June and our regular appearance at the Newton Fayre on the 9th of July. We hope to see some of our old friends at these events. Planning for our long-awaited annual concert on Saturday 3rd of September is well underway. Watch this space, we will announce more details of this concert soon. We are always looking to welcome now choristers. FINANCE HOW TO TRACK DOWN YOUR LOST PENSIONS? When it comes to helping clients find their lost money advisers have to tackle one particular problem first; apathy. It’s nothing new as many are very passive about their retirement, as it seems so far away, they’re often unconcerned, ‘I’ll think about that tomorrow’ comes to mind. They say an average individual will change jobs twelve times during their lifetime so you can’t blame them for losing track of their pensions as getting through life takes over. The department of Works & Pensions get 1000 calls a week asking for help to track down their lost pensions, where else do they go for help? Experts suggest there is currently over £20 Billion in lost pensions waiting to be claimed. It’s always a mystery when so called experts come up with these figures as we can’t prove them wrong. Gone are the times when people stayed in their jobs throughout life and had one pension to consider. These were often Final Salary Pension Schemes, which were guaranteed, and people felt safe with their retirement. Now since the introduction of Auto-Enrolment in 2012 and the jobs market being so fluid an individual could end up with over ten pension pots over a working career, how do you keep control of all of that? It only becomes a nightmare when people wake up to the fastapproaching retirement date and wonder how they will cope. The Government are in the process of investing in a pension dashboard system, which promises to help savers track down their lost pensions and help them view all their money in one place. The launch is expected in 2023, good luck with that then if they have any staff left by then! It’s important to review your pension planning regularly especially when you realise that your pension could be worth more than your house eventually! Make a list of all the companies you’ve worked for, and all the pension plans you’ve mislaid and then find a financial advisor to administer it for you. Take advice and don’t cash in early, so many people we know are driving around in their pensions! Philip Vaughan is a Director at Abacus Assurance Financial Services Porthcawl 01656 772222

the financial hardship that follows. Ask us for a quote, costs you nothing to ask but could save your skin financially. Here’s the big fact of the last year - 4.2 million homes have moved up a bracket on the Stamp Duty ladder. So, not only is the new house costing you more in cash terms but the Stamp Duty payable on the purchase has massively increased too, in the higher bracket. If you’re moving, we can advise not only on the mortgage but also do your stamp duty calculation free of charge – be sure to ask. From our perspective in the business, the startling fact now exists that as banks and building societies have steadily closes branches, last year the percentage of all UK mortgages arranged by Advisers like ourselves, reached 90.3% of the whole market - and with thousands of schemes on the market, that is a real advantage for you – talk to us, we are whole-of-market Advisers and have access to hundreds of lenders Finally, we are able to re-arrange later life borrowing and equity release mortgages at interest rates which are, in some cases, around half of what you could already be paying – you could be saving thousands of pounds just talking to us – so the only numbers you need are 01656 782545 and 07768 418308; give us a call and we’ll do the calculations for you. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS! They say there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Well, this month we’ve been hit by a deluge of figures, covering a myriad of issues, some quite uncomfortable to read. Last month 7% seemed to be the figure we were all seeing as being possible as regards inflation by the end of this year – now they’re talking possibly 10%! It should fall back slowly but steadily to sensible around the third quarter of 2023, my information tells me, so hang on for the ride. At the time of writing I’ve just been to an industry seminar where it was stated that just 14% of all mortgage holders have adequate protection in place for their mortgage – yet you can get up to 65% of your annual income paid out to cover your bills and mortgage if you can’t work, in some cases ( subject to the nature of your work ) starting at under £10 a month – better than taking the risk and then being unable to pay your way, with 36 | seaside news

LEGAL BUSINESSES AND DIVORCE

CHANGES TO APPLICATIONS FOR PROBATE We have experienced significant delays with the probate service since 2018 when the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) proposed to increase probate fees. The proposals led to an increase in applications following uncertainty around the suggested new fee structure. Delays were further exacerbated by the pandemic. Combined with it becoming mandatory in September 2020, to use the online service for grants of probate applications by professional users, with exceptions for more specialised applications, this resulted in increasing delays to the probate service with members suggesting these were often going beyond eight weeks before receiving the grant. HM Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS) are taking measures to reduce the time between submission of applications and receipt of the grant. From 1st January 2022, the Inheritance Tax (Delivery of Accounts) (Excepted Estates) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 came into force. The regulations change the Tax reporting requirements for excepted estates: these are estates below the current inheritance tax (IHT) threshold available at the time of the deceased death. This regulation confirms that Executors / Administrators for a person living in the UK with an excepted estate, who dies on or after 1 January 2022, no longer need to complete the Tax forms IHT205 or IHT217 (where applicable). They must however keep a record of the assets and liabilities of the estate as HMCTS will have 60 days instead of 35 days from the issue of the grant to ask for additional information. The application for probate must contain details of the following:• the net value of the estate for IHT purposes • the gross value of the estate for IHT purposes • the net qualifying value of the estate In addition to this, from 26th January 2022, the costs of applying for probate have increased to a single fee of £273 for professional and non-professional probate applicants, regardless of the size of the estate. The main reasons for this are to remove the discrepancy between professional and non-professional applicants for probate, ensure all users should pay the same fee for the same service, ensure that the fee recovers the cost of delivering the probate service and protect access to justice by ensuring that courts and tribunals are adequately resourced, while reducing the overall taxpayer subsidy for HMCTS. Dealing with the financial fallout from a divorce can be challenging legally but also emotionally. This is certainly true when the divorce involves a family business. It’s an asset that needs to be taken into account in the overall divorce settlement, but it’s not the same as cash in the bank or the family home. You might be able to sell it, but that may the last thing you want to do if it provides the family’s main income or you plan to pass it on to your children. There are potentially complex issues to be considered. Valuing a business on divorce is not straightforward. You need to assess the size and nature of the shareholdings, business and personal tax, the position of any other family or non-family owners and whether or how value can be extracted without undermining its future profitability. If it’s possible, the courts tend to leave the business owner with the business and compensate the other spouse with a larger share of the other assets and/or maintenance. Very often, this is what the couple want themselves. The courts can be flexible, however. For example, it might be possible to share the income or divide the shares. The courts prefer not to leave one person with all the cash assets and another with assets that are tied up in something like a business. But in practice, they often do just that. If you and your ex-partner own a business outright, or have a significant shareholding in a business, it would usually be valued for the financial settlement. Valuing a business can be complicated and, as a result, can cost thousands of pounds. Before you arrange for an expert, it’s a good idea to get some legal advice.

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

Our Gardening Club had a very successful Plant Sale last month and we would like to thank all those who supported us we are very grateful and hope you all enjoy your plants this summer. June days are longer and warmer weeds, unfortunately flourish so time to keep on top of those, bedding plants should be out and in situ now, use water wisely, a top dressing of mulch helps with water retention. Hanging baskets can be put outside now too, don’t forget to keep them well watered and fed. Our lawns need weekly cutting now unless you are leaving a section to go wild to help our butterflies and bees. Our gardens really start to come to life in this beautiful month when everything is green and lush, harvest the first lettuce and veg, Enjoy! It is with great delight that I can announce that Laleston Gardening Club has been successful in gaining a grant from The National Lottery Fund, which will enable us to install another 6 windows in our beautiful Grade II Listed Cliff Cottage. This will allow us to properly ventilate the rooms, which are used by our own Club and many organisations from within the local Community. We are so very grateful to National Lottery Community Fund, Wales. Susan Ford

June is a fabulous month, roses in their prime and the garden as ripe as a plum, the whole month is a swelling crescendo filled with long lovely days! Fill gaps in borders with summer bedding now, then plant something more permanent in the Autumn, you can even drop in a whole tub of summer display plants into the ground (it will need extra watering) then pull it out if original plants get bushier and use it elsewhere (or put it back on your windowsill – fab) If you find earthworms are bringing casts to the surface of your lawn, simply brush them into the grass or borders, they are very rich in nutrients, lawns should be mown twice a week now, (what joy!) We are opening many of our beautiful gardens in Cefn on 26th June, 11-5 in conjunction with the NGS, tickets and maps at the Green Hall, We have craft and plant stalls lots of yummy cakes, teas and coffee, its a wonderful day out. We have tractors and trailers transporting you round gardens, great fun (no common old mini buses for us!) “Roses are red, violets are blue, but they don’t get around like the dandelions do” Chris Early

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY In May we held our first meeting at our new venue at 7.30 pm in Gilead Hall, Park Avenue with a demonstration by Sharon Dower. We were delighted with our new home and Sharon entertained us while creating some wonderful displays. She has her own Youtube channel containing many tutorials and ideas for arrangements, which will be very useful for our newer members. We are all working hard to finalise ideas for our displays for the Music and Flower Festival on June 4th. By the time of reading this, you will have had a chance to view and hopefully enjoy our designs. Some members enjoyed a trip to the Spring Malvern Festival where the display gardens, demonstrations and floral displays were inspiring. I even met Princess Anne there! We have a trip to Ross on Wye • Grass Cutting to the Area NAFAS President’s • Hedge Trimming • Tree Services day to look forward to in June • Turfing as well as a speaker meeting • Decorative Gravel • Fencing and a Practice night. Please call 01656222985 or look at our Facebook page for more information. New members always welcome. PORTHCAWL RUNNERS

TIDES

The Bridgend County Running League races have returned for the summer 2022, the first meeting for all Bridgend clubs since before Covid. Porthcawl Runners were honoured to be hosting the opening race right here on Rest Bay Beach and it was a success all round with many great individual performances, and once again the very strong Women occupied the first three podium places. This builds on the strength of the Women’s team finishing first in the winter West Glam cross-country league. The end of year AGM saw a slight shift in committee positions including long standing treasurer Alwyn Thomas stepping down after 11 years and a whole new team of Welfare officers ensuring the best interests of the members are looked after. The club gets stronger due to the dedication of all members but it must be noted that Porthcawl Runners Serves Sport and The Community as a whole. The generosity of the club members and the wider running community helped raise £3,885.47 for charity. Recipients included Porthcawl Lions / RNLI and LATCH, all made possible with events held throughout the year. Many thanks to all those who took part, attended, performed, volunteered and organised. Truly a team effort. Nick Middleton

Deadline date for the July issue is: SUNDAY 12TH JUNE SURF REPORT: SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE May. Everything is at it fluffy fullest now. The green grass is bushy luscious and long. The leaves on the trees burst out full after sun and rain. All spring flowers are dancing the Spring Ballet in the breeze and at last, once again the water has warmed up. Beaches become friendly. Breezes become warm. And hopefully more blue skies bring glassy swells. That said, As the Planet tilts back to the shallower 22 degrees from its 24 degrees we are bound to get warmer better summers. How this will affect summer surf in the long run I’m not sure. We have enjoyed some small waves again at Ogmore by Sea and £6 to park rip off Southerndown. The Rest Bay Porthcawl webcam always evidences an extra foot or more in size at Rest bay compared to here at Ogmore by sea. Wherever one chooses to surf the beauty of surfing is each beach each peak and every wave is a different experience. Each road approach and first sighting of the sea on arrival. All different experiences. David A Batten 44 | seaside news
