A Passion For Porthcawl & Porridge In Merthyr Mawr
A More Settled Clime
Dear Editor , My wife and I recently moved to Newton, Porthcawl where we found the people here all welcoming, friendly, helpful and hold a unique passion for Porthcawl. Your Seaside News only enhances our opinion, where your balanced editing context, current information and diverse letters reflect the warmth people have for their area and highlight issues that may concern people. My career background in psychology, counseling and teaching and I have lived and worked in past in Turkey, Italy, Spain and various parts of the UK. However, the warmth of the people, along with the stunning scenery here in Porthcawl, is truly enlightening. And I would like this opportunity to thank all people here for enabling my wife and I to settle in. Also, thank you for the Seaside News, which in my opinion is the panacea of all local news reads. PS. A little secret, well if printed no longer a secret! After trekkin g around the sand dunes/ countryside on our frequent walks there’s nothing like eating a bowl of porridge on the bench outside Merthyr Mawr Church. Kind regards from a person who now shares this passion for Porthcawl Alun Davies, Porthcawl

Beware Dear Editor, Last July I had a wonderful birthday present from my two sons – a large stone whippet for the garden. I have had five whippets through the years, all rescue. To say I love whippet dogs is an understatement. While carrying it into the garden, which was difficult even for two strong lads, they rested it on the garden plinth. It looked so right we decided to leave it there, but to cement it on for safe keeping. Living in Laleston Village a lot of neighbours walk dogs and children to the school and park past our property. Many had said how lovely the stone whippet was and one little girl would never pass it without being lifted to stroke it. Recently it was stolen. Shock doesn’t describe how we all felt. Someone had come in the night and used a crowbar – braking it from its plinth. It may only be a stone whippet but it was loved by many, and a morning walk won’t be the same, neither will coming in through the drive. We miss it so much. Whoever has it I hope that you don’t get much money for it or if you still have it you will be reminded that you are a thief, selfish and the lowest of the low. The Oracle
Some Pictures For Your Readers
Dear Editor, The 27th February saw the anniversary of the opening of The ORACLE in Bridgend and the staff celebrated with the amalgamation of three successful social enterprises; Inside Job Recruitment, the MATRIX Advantage and Trinity Business Support Services all under one banner – ORACLE Services. The MATRIX Advantage helps disadvantaged individuals and groups regain confidence, reach their potential and in some cases start their own business. Inside Job Recruitment works with anyone involved with the Criminal Justice System, helps rehabilitate offenders and finds them employment. Trinity Business Support Services offers administration, secretarial, financial, media and back office support along with hot desk facilities and room hire - all at affordable rates, which allows your business to grow. These three enterprises are now joined as one, under the name of ORACLE Services and are available to all. ORACLE Services is currently running several projects, all with the same goal - to help as many people in the community as possible. They don’t turn anyone away and have managed to turn many lives around since they opened their doors back in February 2014. If you would like to find out more or get involved - then please get in touch at: The ORACLE, 18 Adare Street, Bridgend, CF31 1EJ. Call: 0300 0030 0261 Email: info@oracle-services.co.uk Maelle Davies
Dear Editor, Please see attached some pictures and no doubt you have heaps of them (there are some good photographers in and around Porthcawl), but they are often of stormy weather. These shots were taken at sunset in November 2014. Just goes to show there are some sweet evenings in Porthcawl for people to come and share. Keith Thomas, Porthcawl

Steve Strange – Death Of A Music And Fashion Icon Dear Editor, The pop world has lost one of its most iconic characters, Porthcawl’s Steve Strange, who has passed away aged 55. His career started in the late 70s and took off when he opened “The Blitz Club” in Soho, London, where he started a dress culture which became known as the New Romantic Movement. It kick-started bands like Duran Duran, Boy George, Spandau Ballet, Adam Ant and more. Even Mick Jagger got turned away from the club because he was not trendy enough. Steve’s band, Visage, had a worldwide hit with “Fade to Grey” and featured Midge Ure, and David Bowie asked Steve to appear on his “Ashes to Ashes” video. I first met Steve in the late 90s in my own band Secret Army at a gig. He came on my radio show, as at the time he was trying hard to make a comeback, and even recorded one of my songs. It was great to see him back in the limelight over the last few years, on breakfast TV, touring and bringing out a new Visage album, which makes it all the more sad that he’s gone. I’ll miss his “strange” phone calls at odd times, telling me his plans, and seeing him around. My thoughts go to his family, but his music and fashion trends will live on! SCHOOLS Porthcawl Comprehensive School
First Minister Carwyn Jones Visits Porthcawl Comprehensive School Sixth Form students at Porthcawl Comprehensive were thrilled to welcome First Minister Carwyn Jones to school recently. His first visit to PCS since losing a key match as a 12 year old schoolboy playing rugby for Brynteg! This time however his trip ended on a much more positive note, sharing lunch and conversation with the school’s Head Team after a lively and informative question and answer session with 200 Sixth Form students. He explained to students the role of the Welsh Assembly and specifically his role within it as First Minister and as AM for their constituency, before taking questions from the floor. Students enjoyed challenging the AM on topics such as NHS funding, the Welsh language, housing, student finance, literacy and numeracy curriculum changes and the impact of the Welsh Baccalaureate. Over lunch the First Minister spoke to pupils individually, asking what their plans were for the future, and was generous with his encouragement and advice, urging pupils to study what they enjoyed. Alisha John, Assistant Head Girl remarked that the AM “was frank and honest… answered us like he was talking to adults and didn’t dumb down his answers”. Head Girl Rebecca Manley commented that he “answered questions openly” and she found Mr Jones “down to earth and unassuming”. Madeleine Dabernig, Assistant Head Girl, said that the pupils had benefited from having the role of the Welsh Assembly fully explained to them and she particularly noticed that the AM “admitted when things were wrong and didn’t sugar coat things.” AM Carwyn Jones said, “It was a great opportunity to meet the Sixth Form students at Porthcawl Comprehensive and hear about the issues young people are concerned with in my constituency. I was pleased to see that many students at the school are interested in politics, asking questions on a broad range of topics.” Rather fittingly, the AM was accompanied by Megan David, a past pupil at PCS who having left in 2009, graduated from Cardiff University and is now a Research and Public Engagement Officer at the Assembly. This was an inspiration to all the budding politicians amongst the pupils who thoroughly enjoyed their day. Andrew Slade Head Teacher Seaside News | 12
Spring Term Is Flying By At West Park! Nursery and Reception took a trip St Fagan’s Museum. Wrapped up warm, they visited the Rhyd-y-Car Ironworkers’ Houses. They focused on how their contents and gardens had changed from 1805 to 1985. Back at school the children transformed their outdoor classroom into an old fashioned living room! Year 1 and 2 have learned how to cook Crempog – a type of Welsh pancake recipe and Welsh Rarebit. They are looking forward to visits from members of the community who possess traditional Welsh skills. They are going to be visited by jewellery makers, love spoon carvers, harpists and sports people, to help them understand more about Wales and its culture. Mrs Lewis began the Walk Through the Bible program with year 6 pupils and Father Craig delivered an assembly about creation and also invited the Nursery and Reception pupils to St David’s church where they made Christingles for their families. We participated in ‘Bling Your Bike Day’ an initiative to encourage people to choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys. The children brought their crazily decorated bikes and scooters to school and enjoyed showing them off to their friends! Next half term we are looking forward to taking part in The Big Pedal! After 14 years at West Park our wonderful Mrs Thomas is leaving for pastures new. Mrs Thomas has taught hundreds of our pupils throughout the foundation phase and pupils and staff alike will miss her friendliness and enthusiasm. Good luck Mrs Thomas. Mr I Bird, Head Teacher

Brynteg School News A group of Year 7 pupils recently attended the Holocaust Memorial Service at the Civic offices in Bridgend. The pupils had created a poem especially for the occasion and they read it out to the invited dignitaries and guests. The poem entitled ‘Hope shines in every Star’ was very moving and appreciated by all in the Council Chamber. At the Rotary Club ‘Youth Speaks’ competition both the junior team of Halle Bletsoe, Dylan Thomas and Megan MackenzieShearan and senior Brynteg team members Thomas Prosser, Connor Lomax and Lowri Morrison narrowly missed out and were awarded the runners-up certificate. It was a very close run competition and the teams were superb. Year 8 science students visited Aberthaw Power Station to attend the ‘Girls into Science’ event organised by STEM Cymru. The girls leaned about various aspects of the industry and were encouraged by the opportunities available for young women who want to pursue a career in science, technology and engineering. Our Year 13 Photography students exhibited samples of their coursework in a ‘pop-up’ exhibition at Bridgend College. The feedback was excellent and gave the students a real boost. Last year Evan Laidlaw of Year 9 won the prestigious ‘Shakespeare Schools Union Speaking’ competition with a powerful rendition of Henry V. He has been invited to the award ceremony in London and will receive his award by HRH the Princess Royal. Bravo Evan, enjoy your success and the day. Belated congratulations to Isobell Dodd on her recent performances in the last athletics season. Isobel has represented Glamorgan Valleys at the Welsh Athletics Championships where she demolished the field in the 800m to become Welsh Champion She also made it through to the British 800m final representing Wales. Isobel is also the British 1km Life surfing champion. Both achievements deserve a big pat on the back! Also congratulations to fifteen Year 10 Brynteg pupils who have been selected in the Bridgend District Schools rugby squad for this season. Their selection is a testament to their commitment and hard work. The school are extremely proud of the boys, all of whom were part of the Welsh Cup Final squad from last season. Good luck to all the boys who are selected to represent Bridgend Schools in their Dewar Shield matches. There is a long tradition of Brynteg pupils representing Bridgend Schools and hopefully this group of boys will further our reputation. Pam Doster

Cornelly Mums Lead The Way Mums in Cornelly are leading the way with a new initiative that is teaching parents how important breastfeeding can be for newborn babies. Their Parents In Partnership breastfeeding support group was the first to hear about the ‘Your Baby’s First Gift’ campaign after midwives visited them at Cornelly Integrated Children’s Centre. Designed to promote the long-term benefits of providing children with at least one feed of breast milk during their first few days of life, the idea for the campaign came from Leanne Thomas, a Flying Start midwife based at Bettws. Now the message is being spread to mums across the entire ABMU Health Board region. Breastmilk can make a huge difference as it is full of beneficial antibodies and antibacterial properties, so it can reduce the risk of chest infections and tummy upsets. Cornelly is one of eight Flying Start areas in Bridgend County Borough where eligible parents can benefit from the Early Years programme, and there are a number of other Parents In Partnership breastfeeding support groups located around Bridgend County Borough, too. You can find out more about the groups, where they are located and how often they meet by visiting www.pipsw.org.uk Councillor Huw David Cabinet Member for Children and Young People Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

Year 5 were invited to the Council Chambers in Bridgend to participate in ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ workshops. Members of the Cabinet joined the children in a series of engaging and thought provoking activities aimed at making people aware of how racism affects us all. Both children and adults found the day very inspiring. Other events have been taking place in school with Year 5 visiting Techniquest. Our Nursery class has been celebrating Chinese New Year and thoroughly enjoyed their Chinese Banquet and the football team had the opportunity to meet Chris Coleman the manager of the Wales in a football festival in Penybont FC. Afon Y Felin News P.C. Steve Carpenter visited Year 4 recently to talk about the perils of smoking! He explained all about the adverse effects on your health, and showed some of the ingredients that are used to make cigarettes, amongst them are toilet cleaner and battery acid! Hopefully the children will be put off smoking for life! Roger from ‘Bike It’ is encouraging the children to ride their bicycles to school instead of travelling by car. Miss Bennett is the Bike It champion, and the Bike It Crew are Skarlette, Ellie, Charlie, Cerys and Emilia. He has demonstrated how it is safer to ride in bright, fluorescent colours, and there will be fun activities, e.g. bling your bike. Rebekah Carter from Dental Health came, and parents were offered the chance to have their children’s teeth coated with fluoride, to help the teeth remain strong and to reduce the number of fillings needed in the future, all the pupils also brush their teeth daily after lunch. We held a parents’ open evening, parents were invited in to view their children’s’ work and to view, informally, the school and classroom environment. Class 4 are hoping to twin our school toilets with a school in a less fortunate country, and are raising funds to help the chosen school upgrade their facilities, commencing with a sale of hand made goods and confectionaries. Year 6 has been busy writing stories which were entered into the Shining Scribes competition. Three entries were put forward by the school, the budding writers being Holly Thomas, Kara Morgan-Rees and Matthew Sleep. After judging by a range of famous people, including Bonny Tyler, Dr Rowan Williams (former Archbishop of Canterbury), Scott Quinell, Ruth Jones, Iwan Thomas and Iolo Williams, Kara Morgan-Rees’ entry, The Girl in the Red Hat, was awarded a place in the final top ten stories. In March Kara and her family will be attending a ceremony in the SWALEC stadium in Cardiff where the overall winner will be announced. The staff and pupils wish Kara the best of luck and would like to congratulate Holly and Matthew for writing stories to such a high standard. Princess Anne Visited the lifeboat station which was celebrating its 50th birthday. Year 3 and 4 arrived with flags, a bouquet and even our own little Welsh girl and dragon! Although we didn’t manage to meet Princess Anne it was an exciting event for the children as they managed to see the lifeguards exit their station ready for a rescue. The children were so enthusiastic waving their flags they even managed to get a ‘toot’ by their rescue tractor, which of course was very exciting! Rachel John, Acting Head Teacher

David Ryan Roofing Porthcawl Primary News After the success of English and Maths Week it was great to see so many parents and family members getting involved with Science Week. We had a variety of fun and interactive experiments going on over the week and we learned about a number of scientists. Next half term all our pupils will be visiting Techniquest to put their new found scientific skills to the test. We have also been practicing out anagrams as we have entered the UK ‘Bananagram Challenge’. The aim of the game is to make as many anagrams with the letters you are given. After a month of intense competition, which started out with 32 competitors, we now have our ‘best of the bunch’. Congratulations to Max Slaughter who will now represent Porthcawl Primary in the next round against schools all over the UK. Finally we have been working hard getting ready for the F1 in schools event at the Celtic Manor in March. Our team, ‘Porthcawl Power’, have designed a light and aerodynamic car and are currently in the process of putting together their portfolio to present on the day. We hope the car is as fast as it looks! Andrew Wood Porthcawl Primary

Cynffig Comprehensive News Hello again. Like all schools, we have been looking very closely at the new School categorisation information, and we are pleased to have been awarded a ‘yellow’ rating, identifying us as an effective school, with a good level of learner outcomes. Our performance in English, for example, is in the top 25% of schools in Wales - a remarkable achievement - and the ‘value’ we add to pupils’ progress is ‘significantly’ more than would be expected of the school in every performance measure at GCSE. We are pleased that our plans for continued growth and improvement have been recognised as effectively addressing the needs of the school, and that our role as a Hub school will support others in the new English GCSE examinations. We do not allow the big picture to distract us from the needs of all our individual pupils, however, and we have just held a packed Options Evenings for years 9 and 11, who will be making their GCSE and A-level choices shortly. If you think we might be the right school for your child, please pick up the phone and ask to come in for a tour and a chat. You will be warmly welcomed. Hannah Castle, Head Teacher Tel: 01656 740294

Last month, our budding chefs had a very special treat when they visited The Great House in Laleston for Afternoon Tea as part of their exam preparations for GCSE Catering. As well as being able to sample a delicious variety of cakes and pastries, our pupils were treated to a behind the scenes tour of the kitchens from Head Chef Tommy Heaney, who gave them some invaluable, hands on advice about life as a chef. The pupils then had a demonstration on how to make choux pastry, and what makes the perfect profiterole. Thank you to everyone at The Great House for such wonderful hospitality, and good luck to our GCSE pupils in their practical exam! This is a very important time of year for our Year 11 pupils. As well as completing their studies before beginning their revision for the summer exams, it is also time to contemplate their options for September. The Sixth Form at St. Clare’s boasts excellent results every year, and offers students the individual attention they need to be able to reach their full potential. If you are in Year 11, or have a family member who is, we would love to hear from you and show you around our Sixth Form. For more information please contact Admissions on (01656) 789966. The Wasteland
Community Fund Available
A visit I made recently to the old Sandy Bay Caravan Site was a real eye-opener. If ever there was an example of how council bungling has created a wasteland, it is here. BCBC has somehow managed to turn what was a profitable and busy caravan park with excellent facilities into a scene of utter desolation. The old site roads and street lamps are all that remain. Sandy Bay has been designated for new houses under the Seven Bays Regeneration Plan – a plan no nearer now to even starting than it was 15 years ago when it was fresh off the drawing board. Salt Lake is still waiting for its supermarket development while the chances of a developer taking on Sandy Bay are slim at best, and non-existent at worst because of the high start up costs caused by the need for flood defence work. For how much longer will Porthcawl be blighted by an unfeasible and impractical regeneration plan, which is now not fit for purpose? It’s time BCBC ripped it up and sat down with local residents and organisations to find out what is achievable. Pie in the sky should be off the menu permanently.
Porthcawl Town Council is currently welcoming applications for its Community Fund. The Community Fund was set up a year ago and is set to run for a further two years, subject to funds allocated. The Town Council set aside a sum of £25,000 for the fund, which is to be allocated upon successful applications. There is no minimum or maximum amount of the £25,000 that an organisation can apply for. Once all the £25,000 has been allocated there will be no further funding available from the Community Fund so make sure you get your application in as soon as possible. This year the Town Council has already allocated £4,190 from the pot towards projects within Porthcawl. In order to be successful your project should contribute to one or more of the following: a welcoming town, community cohesion, skills and talent and/or environmental improvement. It should benefit one or more of the following: local residents, local charities, local groups/organisations and/or the local economy. To obtain an application form please contact the Town Council office on 01656 782215 or visit www.porthcawltowncouncil. co.uk and use the contact us page. Alison Thomas

Merger Rejection Underlines Disrespect For Local Decision Making The decision by the Public Services Minister to reject the bid by Bridgend Council to voluntarily merge with the Vale of Glamorgan was a major disappointment. If we are to join together councils in this way then this is a natural coupling. The Minister’s announcement demonstrated how unimaginative the Welsh Labour Government is in terms of local government reorganisation. The danger is that if it tries to impose a pattern rather than allow councils to develop them organically and sustainably, based on natural communities then we will have to revisit this process again in another 20 years. That would be expensive and wasteful. If we are to continue with this botched agenda of shoving together existing councils instead of a proper redrawing of boundaries, the least that Welsh Labour Ministers could do is listen to the wishes of councils themselves. Instead, Labour seem hell bent on ignoring local democracy and ploughing ahead with their preferred combinations at all costs. In order to create sustainable local councils that will stand the test of time, it must not be done over the heads of existing councils and completely against their wishes and those of local people. Less Top-Down, More Accountability The proposed Planning Bill for Wales will take decisions further away from communities and will erode the democratic accountability of decision-making over land use in Wales. Plaid Cymru is calling for a root-and-branch reform of the planning system to strengthen local voices, because the current Welsh Government Bill creates a top-down regime that will take people further away from the decisions that affect them. The Bill proposes a National Development Framework that sets the parameters for Regional Development Plans, which in turn set the parameters for Local Development Plans. This runs contrary to Plaid Cymru’s belief that communities should have a stronger say. We would much rather turn that system on its head and start with the development aspirations of communities like Porthcawl as the building blocks of the planning system in Wales. We are also concerned that there will be unelected and unanswerable members on the Strategic Development Panels. It is right that a breadth of voices is heard, but co-opted members should not have voting rights. This legislation also contains around 65 examples of empowering ministers to make laws that will be given much less scrutiny. This is effectively a government power grab. News More Funding For Porthcawl Marina 21 coastal communities across Wales are set to gain more than £4.5 million in Welsh Government funding to regenerate towns along the coast and draw in tourism, with Porthcawl one of the towns to benefit. Almost £300,000 of funding has been provided to those with local knowledge of the area to develop projects and address specific issues facing Porthcawl. The funding is being provided to Porthcawl Harbourside Community Interest Company to further develop the marina and harbour quarter in Porthcawl. The money from the UK Treasury’s Coastal Communities Fund, the Welsh Government and the lottery will go towards increasing boat capacity in the marina, providing new water sports activity provision as well as education facilities for visitors and local people which we hope will draw more and more tourists to the area, creating jobs and growth to the economy in Porthcawl. The Welsh Government wants to see vibrant, viable communities all along Wales’s fantastic coastline. This funding will support the Welsh Government’s work to regenerate coastal towns, boosting their economic development as well as their standing as key tourism and cultural destinations. I look forward to seeing this extra funding for Porthcawl benefiting the community and local people throughout my constituency. Carwyn Jones AM First Minister for Wales
Cold Calling Control Zone To Be Evaluated The Rest Bay and Nottage PACT meeting on Tuesday 3rd March will be looking at how the cold calling control zone has been performing since it was introduced in 2014. Established by South Wales Police and the Trading Standards team at Bridgend County Borough Council, the zone covers more than 270 homes on Anglesey Way, Sandpiper Road and West Park Drive and was set up following complaints from residents about persistent cold calling and burglaries in the area. Designed to help residents say ‘no’ to unwanted cold callers and know exactly how to report any issues, the scheme has seen signage erected throughout the area and all residents have been provided with information packs and door stickers. It aims to deter pushy sales staff and discourage criminals from carrying out distraction burglaries or scoping out properties that they are thinking of robbing. Questionnaires were recently delivered to all homes within the cold calling control zone to gather opinions from residents on how well it is working, so the results should be really interesting. In the meantime, don’t forget that you can call South Wales Police on 101 to report aggressive or persistent cold callers as well as suspicious behaviour. Many young people can find themselves in a situation where they are unable to get to work or college due to a lack of transport options, so I was delighted to hear about Bridgend Community Transport’s innovative new ‘Wheels to Work’ scheme. Anyone aged 17 to 25 who finds that a lack of transport is preventing them from getting on in life can borrow a scooter for up to six months. Backed by a grant of £15,806 from The South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Alun Michael, the scheme is the latest initiative being offered by Bridgend Community Transport – a not-for-profit charity that is partfunded by Bridgend County Borough Council. An initial payment of £140 is required to loan a scooter, but £100 of that amount will be refunded, the user’s insurance will be covered for the period of the loan, and protective equipment, safety checks and maintenance will all be provided too. Any potential ‘Wheels to Work’ loanee must either have a job, a job offer, or have been offered a place in further education or an apprenticeship. They must also possess a full driving licence, and for further details please visit www.bridgendcommunitytransport.co.uk or call 01656 669665.

The best partial eclipse of the Sun since August 1999 will be visible on Friday March 20th. The eclipse will begin at around 8.30am when the Moon begins to pass in front of the Sun and by 9.30am will have covered 87% of it. This is the maximum we will experience before the Moon begins to slowly move away from the Sun’s disk. By 10.30am the event will be all over. Even when just 13% of the Sun is visible it will still be very bright and easily capable of causing blindness. NEVER look at the Sun with binoculars or a telescope unless you project the image onto white card. Solar eclipse glasses are inexpensive and a reasonably safe option when used with caution. Don’t use film negative or smoked glass as although they will block the light, they will magnify the heat and cause eye damage. The last total solar eclipse to be seen from Porthcawl was in May 1724 but good partials were seen in June 1927, June 1954 and February 1961. The next partial is August 2026 but we will have to wait many centuries for another total. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society
Through Christian Eyes In the English language we only have one word for love. Therefore, we can say “I love my spouse”, and in the next breathe say, “I love chocolate”. In the Greek language however they have four different words for love depending on what is being referred to. The words are 1. Storge, which means affection - maybe the sort between family members. 2. Philio, which means something like fondness that can exist between friends. 3. Eros, which is to do with romance. 4. Agape, which means unconditional love. Parents would certainly understand this kind of love toward their children. Agape is the word used in the bible when talking about God’s kind of love. God’s love is unconditional. It is always others centeredness and self-sacrificial. In fact the bible says that God is love (1 John 4 v 8). God loves because he is love. His love reaches out to you whether you know it or not. My encouragement to all this month is to get to know God and this kind of love. It’s this kind of love that could answer the problems we see in the world today. What would the world be like if everyone loved like God? Neil Harvey 07870 168154

Porthcawl Sea Cadets This is a great time as our plans to make the unit an exciting experience for cadets offering real training and access to a wide range of opportunities is forging ahead. Thnaks to an award from Community Chest, the unit will be offering a Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme programme commencing shortly. The training and access that cadets have to a wide range of waterbourne and outward bound events is impressive. Indeed many cadets are away most weekends taking up voluntary activities across Wales and the South West. New cadets, 10 years of age through to 18 years of age, are always welcome (contact rachde@hotmail.co.uk). If you have a couple of hours to spare each week and can assist us with some computerised administration help, particularly with booking cadets and staff instructors on courses etc. then we would love to hear from you. There are also opportunities for people aged 18 and over to become a part time weekend staff instructor. Sea cadets provide excellent training and it is a great vocation. If you want to find out more then please contact Dave Cheeseman our CO on co_porthcawlscc@hotmail.co.uk Mike Clarke - Chair

FEATURES Rotary Steps Up Again for Local Charity
Once again the Rotary Club of Porthcawl has recently made a generous donation to Ty Cornel, one of its local charities. Ty Cornel Homeless Project and Morfa Project in Bridgend have now been open for nearly 10 years and are run by Llamau (which means ‘steps’ in old Welsh) and they have supported over 900 young adults of 16 and 17 years of age who have been through the homeless system and have failed to maintain tenancies or cope on their own. An average stay at the projects is roughly six to nine months. During this time they are supported in developing independent living skills like cooking, cleaning, budgeting etc. and the gifts given to Ty Cornel by the Rotary Club of Porthcawl will be very helpful when they actually become independent of the help they have received. The package donated comprises six toasters, six steam irons and six electric kettles, which will certainly benefit six young adults as they take their own big steps into independence. Pictured here are (from left to right) Rotarian Ivor Williams, Ty Cornel’s Natasha Kelly, Rotarian Jean Schofield, Caroline (Caz) Davies, Lead Worker at Ty Cornel and Rotarian Robert Aubrey. News From The Talbot The Talbot is proud to announce that the Community Centre has now doubled in size. We have more meeting rooms and offices for hire - for the occasional use, or long term lease, two large halls, i.e. the Rees Hall and the Talbot Hall, and two kitchens! Phase II has been completed, new corridors have been added, thus creating more rooms for immediate use. We already have over 150 members, mainly of a mature age, but with these extra rooms, we can encourage the youth of the village to join us; why not pop in and see for yourself the amount of work that has been carried out to date, with a lot more alterations yet to be made. In the meantime, our lunches on Wednesdays and Fridays are getting busier, as is our twice weekly bingo sessions. Good news for our Theatre Club, both trips arranged for later in the year, Annie in the Cardiff Millennium Centre, and Aladdin in the New Theatre, are almost fully subscribed. If you are interested, you needn’t be a member of the Talbot, please phone, or call in when you are passing, for more details (01656 749754). Cheryl Butcher

Rotary District Quiz Final Please find attached photographs of the Rotary District 1150 Quiz Final between Brigdend Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Porthcawl. The competition was held in the Atlantic Hotel, Porthcawl on Monday 9th February. The competition was hosted by Porthcawl, with the Assistant District Governor, Mansel Thomas, adjudicating. The final result was an emphatic win to Bridgend 42 points to 30 for Porthcawl. However, the scores belied the competition and both teams were to be congratulated on a hard fought contest. The President of the Porthcawl Rotary Club, Rotarian Wayne Warlow, was magnanimous when he congratulated the Bridgend Rotary Club Team on a deserving win and wished them well in the next round of the competition, the InterDistrict Finals. President Sue Cassidy of The Bridgend Rotary club said that it was a most enjoyable evening with good company, food and fellowship with the win coming as a welcome bonus. She thanked the Porthcawl Rotary Club and President Wayne for hosting the evening and suggested that a rematch could be arranged at some point in the future. The teams were delighted with their efforts and were congratulated by the assembled Rotarians on a well run and competed contest. FEATURES Porthcawl Inner Wheel News This February the Porthcawl Inner Wheel Club celebrated its 64th anniversary. Our Birthday Party was held in the Grove Golf Club, Porthcawl on Thursday 12th February. We had a most enjoyable roast beef dinner, followed by an interesting and very entertaining illustrated talk by Mrs Ceri Joseph on the history of Porthcawl. Ceri began her talk with a picture of mammoths that roamed this area thousands of years ago. Her talk progressed through the ages, detailing the development of the town with photographs of the industrialisation of the Porthcawl hinterland, the construction of the port, and the growth of the town as a seaside resort. She spoke about the developers of the town - the Brogdens and the Knights, for example. Old photographs of previous landmarks explained some of our street names. The Lias Road school building, the railway station, the early photographs of the Esplanade before it became an hotel, were some examples. When the talk ended President Gill presented Mrs Ceri Joseph with a bottle of wine and a cheque for her favourite charity. It was a most enjoyable evening. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent
Life With Porthcawl Lions
Porthcawl Shout Welcomes Carwyn Jones Porthcawl SHOUT Chairman Gary Victor welcomed the First Minister, and our Assembly Member, Carwyn Jones to its February meeting held as usual in Trinity Church, Porthcawl. During a wide ranging question and answer debate that lasted over an hour Mr Jones, very efficiently, through his straight forward answers to questions, updated members, on the Health Service, Local Government Re-organisation, Educational issues, the new Blue Badge criteria, as well as the Welsh Government’s intentions for Cardiff Airport. Members even expressed their concerns regarding the future of Severn Bridge Tolls. Whilst the discussions were far reaching, members left the minister in no doubt that their priority concerns were still the Health Service and particularly the urgent need for a modern new Health Care Centre for the Town of Porthcawl. It was also accepted that Porthcawl’s Regeneration had been totally unsatisfactory to date. The Minister welcomed the recent announcement of the Harbour development and the prospect of a new state-of-theart Maritime Centre, as well as the long awaited redevelopment of the Jennings Building. Porthcawl SHOUT Forum meets on the first Friday of each month and ALL are welcome to attend. Clive Mort
Record Donations At Buckaneer’s Presentation On Saturday 14th February many people out celebrating St. Valentine’s Day found themselves being ‘held up’ by a group of Mafia lookalikes! In reality it was some of the Porthcawl Lions collecting for the British Heart Foundation. The club would like to thank all the businesses that agreed to allow the ‘gangsters’ in and all those who gave so generously. The next event in the Porthcawl Lions calendar is, hopefully, a tabletop sale and coffee morning at Trinity church on Friday 27th March from 10am to 12.30pm. Tables are just £5.00 and a good opportunity for individuals, groups of friends or charities to turn unwanted toys, clothes, household items etc. to profit. If you would like to book a table please telephone 786698. Other dates for Lions events are Tuesday 28th April for Porthcawl Lions social evening; Monday 4th May for the May Fayre at All Saints’ church; Friday 5th June for Golf Day at The Grove and Saturday 1st August for the vintage fair at the Porthcawl Rugby Club. Meanwhile all members of the club are looking forward to the visit of the Lions international president who will meet members at the lifeboat station to see the first aid room and equipment that Porthcawl Lions have helped to provided. We held an auction at one of our recent meetings and it proved to be a very fun and enjoyable afternoon. Some of our members also entered the whist competition, which apart from being a lovely afternoon, proved quite successful for one of our members. We are also looking forward to some of the trips planned for the forthcoming year. Our book group is becoming quite popular as well, with some good and interesting books to read. We are also looking forward to our Fashion Show and Beetle Drive in the months to come. We have all this and more, so if you would like to become a member please contact Gwen on 783238. Our February meeting was chaired by the Deputy President Jan Mosley. All relative business was discussed and minutes approved. The speaker this month was Dean Powell, who gave us a very interesting talk on ‘Treorchy and the Land of Song’. How music has helped the Welsh to project themselves through choirs (choral and male voice) soloists and instrumental (harp and brass bands). Music galvanised communities especially in the mining areas, giving people a way of expressing themselves after long dark days underground. Music is still of course an important part of Welsh Culture. Members thanked the Committee for the delicious buffet provided at the Christmas party, and how much they all enjoyed the entertainment (Ukulele Band). Thanks also to Shirley for organising the splendid ‘Pantomime’ trip to Cardiff. We are all looking forward to the Federation Lunch and Fashion Show in April. A warm welcome was extended to new members, we hope they will enjoy their time with us. For more information please phone: Pearl Mason on 772657
Laleston WI News The February meeting opened with a few moments of silent reflection in fond memory of Phyllis Chapman who had recently passed away at the grand age of 106 years. Highlights from the County Letter included the Annual Council Meeting at the Princess Royal Theatre, Port Talbot on 6th May – with guest speaker John Craven. Also the Federation of Wales Conference in St. David’s Hall, Cardiff with a Gala Concert on 18th September followed by the conference on 19th. The evening proceeded with a lively Beetle Drive, which was enjoyed by all and enabled our three new members to mix and chat with everyone. Overall joint winners were Pat Gulwell and Joan Rule with the prize for lowest score going to Val Lock. At our next meeting on March 5th at 7.15pm in the Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club) the guest speaker is Mr Steve Gorwell, a former traffic police officer. Guests and visitors always warmly welcomed. For further information call Margaret on 01656 660384 or Diane on 01656 656600. Margaret Aylen
Porthcawl Townswomens Guild News Well into the year now and looking forward to the spring! Last month our craft group was busy and our literary group celebrated the poetry of Robert Burns. An enjoyable coffee morning was held at Trinity Church Hall, this time just to raise money for Guild funds and a social get together. Our monthly luncheon Club went to The Seagull, which had been very well decorated, and we had an excellent lunch. We can highly recommend it and will return! Our committee has been busy discussing future plans - outings for the year ahead etc. Mr Romeo Bassini was the speaker at our February meeting on ‘The Italian Connection’. Most interesting, and we particularly enjoyed his accordion playing. Our next meeting is our AGM on March 11th, 2pm at All Saints Church Hall. Visitors welcome! Dorothy Thomas

The February meeting of Sker WI was held recently and both the bowls and darts teams are taking part in competitions in the near future - we wish them both luck. The speaker for the evening was Mr Derrick Warren who gave a talk on ‘The day I burned a million pounds’. Mr Warren worked at Battersea Power Station, which was built in 1936 and opened in1938. There were nine furnaces approx. 30ft square in the building. Mr Warren told us stories of the his time there and of the occasion when during the war Germany printed counterfeit English money which the Allies confiscated and it was destroyed at Battersea. The Power Station closed in1983 and became a Protected Building. We have a varied programme to look forward to which includes speakers and various outings. The Craft Group meet every Wednesday afternoon, with a variety of crafts being pursued. The next meeting will be on Thursday 12th March at 7pm at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage when the speaker will be Mrs Ceri Joseph on ‘Porthcawl during the War’. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

Finance Inheritance Tax explained Inheritance Tax is usually paid on an estate when somebody dies. It is also sometimes payable on trusts or gifts made during someone’s lifetime. Most estates don’t have to pay Inheritance Tax because they are valued at less than the threshold of £325,000. Threshold for married couples and civil partners: Since October 2007, married couples and registered civil partners can effectively increase the threshold on their estate when the second partner dies to as much as £650,000. How does the transfer work? Everyone’s estate is exempt from Inheritance Tax up to a threshold: £325,000. This threshold is also known as the ‘nil rate band’. Married couples and registered civil partners are allowed to pass assets from one spouse or civil partner to the other during their lifetime or when they die without having to pay Inheritance Tax. If someone leaves everything they own to their surviving spouse or civil partner in this way, it is not only exempt from Inheritance Tax but it also means they haven’t used any of their own Inheritance Tax threshold or nil rate band. It is therefore available to increase the Inheritance Tax nil rate band of the second spouse or civil partner when they die even if the second spouse has re-married. Their estate can therefore be worth up to £650,000 before they owe Inheritance Tax. How to transfer the unused threshold: The executors or personal representatives of the second spouse or civil partner need to send specific forms and supporting documents to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). HMRC calls this ‘transferring the nil rate band’ from one partner to another. At One Life Financial Planning Ltd we can provide you with guidance on the process and offer advice as to how to address or mitigate any resulting Inheritance Tax liability. Why planning for your future retirement requires answers 1. How long will I be retired for? According to the Institute of Fiscal Studies, 58.5% [1] of workers haven’t given any thought to how long their retirement could last. A 65-year-old can now typically expect to live for about another 20 years. 2. How much do I need to invest? You need to be investing as much as you can for as long as you can to make every year count as well as using other savings and investments to help fund your retirement. 3. How will I stay on track? 74% of under-45s with pensions have no idea what their pension pots are currently worth, and 79% say they don’t know what income they are expecting when they retire. You should regularly review your pension and be aware of how much of a pension pot you have. [1] YouGov Plc.
Lending For Business & Landlords...And Residents! Throughout the financial crisis the appetite to lend shrank to a level unseen for many years. However, borrowing now is much easier than even a year ago. That said, businesses and landlords have still struggled to find the finance they need to develop and grow their businesses. Well, we can now help, in many cases. We have in place, special arrangements with a Welsh-based company that specialises in financing for business, including limited companies and sole traders, and secured loans for both business people and residential clients. Whether you are looking at the purchase of business premises, we can take a look at it. That might include a factory unit or a shop or another property type. Whilst not all lenders lend on any type of property, if you don’t ask the question, you don’t get the answer. So whatever your needs, get them down on paper and give us a call. We’ll then pass your enquiry straight to the underwriters who will endeavour to access the deal for you. This part of the service costs you nothing to find out – all we need is your enquiry, explaining what you want to do. We’ll do the rest. As for residential clients, there are times when either a remortgage doesn’t fit the new affordability rules that lenders now have to use to assess an application, or where it would not Seaside News | 34

Bird Watch: Pied Wagtail
March Garden Watch
The Pied Wagtail has distinctive black and white colouring and a long, constantly bobbing, tail. This is a bird that walks, rather than hops, and nods its head like a chicken as it moves forwards in fits and starts or darting runs. Nodding with each step, whilst the body moves, keeps the head fixed relative to the bird’s surroundings, thus making it easier to spot food or danger. Males and females look very similar, the female having a greyer, rather than black, back and smaller bib. The throat of breeding males is black whilst that of non-breeding birds is white. Around one third of gardens may be visited during cold winters. In 2005 I recorded Pied Wagtails for 21 weeks of the year, but I’ve hardly ever seen one since! I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. After what has seemed a long winter, spring has finally arrived! Early March is a great time to plant those herbaceous perennials such as geraniums and you can even look to sow your sweet peas outside. This is also the best month for planting roses in cold areas or where there is heavy soil but try to avoid locations where roses have been before. With the last cut a distant memory we can finally return to our lawns. Established lawns can be mowed in dry periods however make sure that the first cut is higher than what is usually done in the summer. It’s also a great time to lay new turf but ensure that the ground isn’t sodden and work from planks to avoid treading on it once it’s laid. Water well once you have finished, paying particular attention to the joins, which will dry out and curl up. Finally why not think about sowing a wildflower meadow. There are many seed mixes that can be used however make sure that these are right for your specific soil type or aspect. So dust off your mower and tools and enjoy the early days of spring in your garden. Pete ecogreengardens.co.uk See my advert on page 9

Cefn Gribwr Gardening Club March is the beginning of the busy season and the job list lengthens along with the daylight! It’s time to prepare seed beds and mulch borders (5cm backbreaking stuff), and begin the never-ending task of slug control, as the temperature creeps upwards along with lush new growth so does the slug population, beware – they are all hungry! Plant early potatoes (nicely chitted of course) also onions and shallots, these like a sunny position and good drainage but they don’t like freshly manured ground, netting them till the roots take hold is a good idea as birds love to pull them out! Finish pruning clematis and late flowering shrubs, as you will be cutting away much needed energy if you leave it too late! Prune your hydrangeas cutting back to a pair of health buds, if you remove a couple of the oldest stems (at the base), the bush will flourish beautifully. Did you know the government has issued supermarkets warnings about where they put daffodil bulbs as in the past six years 63 people have been hospitalised after mistaking them for onions and the stems for a Chinese vegetable! On a warm day – open your greenhouse – have a blow through! Chris Early

Providing women the opportunity to take a year’s leave following the birth of a child inarguably has a valid and rightful place in the commercial world with such right being afforded to mothers for over 35 years. However, the system is often viewed as being far from perfect, as many believe that the problem of wage inequality comes from a policy which is intended to ease the burden on working women. For that reason, recent and forthcoming changes to parental leave legislation in the UK should only be welcomed. Working fathers have been entitled to additional paternity leave since April 2011, allowing them to take up to 26 weeks of paid leave once their partner has returned to work, but recently, matters have progressed further. Shared Parental Leave is set to come into force on 5th April 2015 (unless the child is born prematurely in which case, could begin now), which will mean that, following a mother’s two weeks’ obligatory leave post-childbirth, parents will now be able to share the remaining 50 weeks, with an option to each take 25 weeks at the same time, as opposed to back-to-back. Alternatively, they can take shorter periods of shared leave within the 50 weeks, with the remaining weeks taken by either parent. Such changes shows that the Government has recognised the vital importance of women to businesses in the UK and the need to offer them flexibility in order to return to work if they so wish, enabling both parents to retain a link with the labour market. It is hoped this will allow more fathers to play a greater caring role. However, the impact that these changes may have remains to be seen given that, to date, the uptake of the additional paternity leave which has been in place for fathers now for over 3 years has been relatively small. Going forward, within the 52-week period, future parents should be mindful that they will need to give at least eight weeks’ notice of any leave that they will be taking and, as with any maternity and paternity leave, notice must also be given at end of the 15th week before childbirth. Along with expecting parents, these changes will obviously also affect all businesses, regardless of size. Employers are therefore well advised to begin organising their workforce and planning for absences as soon as possible as, for the first time, they may well need to cope with both female and male employees taking long periods of absence.

Health Meditation Matters It’s that time of year when the real meditators of Porthcawl and further afield gather. Who am talking about? The allotment gardeners of course! Gardening is a wonderful meditative experience, the push and pull of the fork, a representation of the mind. Those paused moments of breathing, the care for the creatures in the soil and of course the kindness of passing on nature’s goodness to friends and family. If you do go down to the allotment, pay attention to the people down there. They smile from the heart and actually make friendly conversation. A process that some of us have forgotten. I do have some news, I have acquired a Go Pro Camera and will be making short one minute videos on a variety of topics. So many people shudder at that word ‘Meditation’. But if you do tune in, I will prove to you, in fact you have been doing it for years. Mindfulness just means ‘Recollection’ in the old Pali language. In the Christian tradition ‘Know thy self’. The project will be presented in very real terms, no religious talk – just life the way it is. The Bridge of Mindfulness. Neville Evans

Curcumin For Psychological & Cognitive Benefits In An Older Population An Australian study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology has highlighted the positive effects of curcumin on cognition and mood in a healthy older population. The researchers used 60 healthy adults aged 60–85 and for four weeks gave them either a daily dose of 80 milligrams of curcumin (400 mg of a solid lipid curcumin formulation) or a placebo. They found it was associated with reductions in fatigue following a mental challenge, improved measures of sustained attention, working memory, and improved resilience to the detrimental effects of psychological stress on mood. The participants of the study receiving the curcumin also displayed improved measures of calmness and contentedness. Blake Ebersole, Technical Director of Verdue Sciences, who funded the study, commented, “These new findings could help to establish new opportunities and markets in the brain health category that can benefit from the improvements in short term memory, attention, fatigue and alertness shown in this study.” Taken from the Alliance for Natural Health website. POEMS Eagle Verses Man
The Beech Hedge
A Lie
Like an eagle flying over, The barren dessert land, Looking for movement, Along the miles of sand.
While all around stands stark and bare She wears with pride her russet gown Nor storm nor frost nor hurricane Can force her now to lay it down
Joining up created the first deceit, Young boys trying to find their feet.
A fight for survival, A morsel just to feed, Not using more than required, Out of pure greed.
Yet, from within, a greater power Than frost or snow or tempest blast The power than rolled away the stone And conquers death and hell at last Now gently nudges from within And fresh new raiment urges on So withered clothing from the past Falls to reveal Springs fresh new gown
For what is caught is needed, To keep that breed alive, And what is left for another day, Will help it to survive. An eagle has survived generations, With these morals embedded in their souls, It is like eagle verses man’s stupidity, Because we will all get to our goals. The moral of this poem, Is easy to understand, Use only what is needed in life, And not everything at hand. David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend
Floating Like A Feather Floating like a feather, So white and solitude, As barren as a desert, And as pure as a baby nude. A feather so light and pure, In the wind it floats so high, So solitude and non-descript, As it floats throughout the sky. They come in many shades and colours, Multi-coloured, black and pure white, They say the white is from your angels, Who are with you, but out of sight! David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend
16, 17,18 years old Forever in the grasp of the front line’s hold. Young, courageous and feeling the cold, They experienced things they never got told.
So let’s discard our russet gowns And let new life within us rise Cling not to joys of yesteryear Come, dance with joy this Easter tide Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
A letter home was a claim ‘to fame’ But secretly it was full of shame. A letter home - a dream, A hope, A way to cope. But sometimes all they desired Was a bar of soap. Soldiers mentioned their banquet of food, Crumbs could not revive their mood.
Siblings
Nights were black and days were grey, It was never meant to be this way. They said “a war for only a year” Why am I still here? A light in the sky, Was that the sun? No time to think, Run.
2 girls and 4 boys Together linked With a forever bond. Bend us, shake us, but never break us. Miles apart, or side by side We are one, our hearts inside. Sadie is the madam But Kelly is the boss Shaun, Josh and Kyle Are the bros Will is the remembered one. Apart they are amazing Together they’re at their best. A bond united forever Their hearts entwined together With love Your loving Mum. Tina Saunders Porthcawl
Half a lifetime using a gun This was meant to be fun... One place they feared most The Zone. An area known as Forever alone. Holly Walker, Bridgend

BOOK OF THE MONTH: Jill Mansell: Three Amazing Thing About You This novel brings together 3 women linked by tragedy. The novel opens when Hallie who has Cystic Fibrosis is told lungs have been found for her. Hallie is madly in love with Luke, her doctor. Knowing he is off limits, she keeps her feelings to herself, instead dispensing advice as an agony aunt on her website ‘Three things about you’. Then there’s Flo who works in a care home who falls for Zander, but complications with his rather vile sister keep their relationship from running smoothly. We also meet Tasha who is unlucky in love but has she finally found the man of her dreams in the unlikeliest of places? All these books and many more are available free of charge from your local Library. Don’t forget we have Reading Groups for all ages which are great for introducing you to books you might not otherwise choose.

Bridgend Writers’ Circle - Open Short Story Competition Results The competition attracted 44 entries, almost half of those from the Bridgend area, and the rest mainly from the South of Wales and England. The standard was high. We very much enjoyed reading all the stories. A short-list of eight stories was drawn and the final judgement rested on our local poet and musician Rhian Edwards (‘Clueless Dogs’: Wales Book of the Year 2013). We are proud to announce the winners: - ‘Georges’ Bridge’, by Jennifer Rainbow (Bridgend): 1st prize (a writing course at Ty Newydd worth £500, donated by Literature Wales); Seaside News | 44
We recently celebrated Harry Potter Book Night where we turned Porthcawl Library into Hogwarts for the evening which included a sinister looking Potions Room. Every child got a chance to put on the Sorting Hat before a number of activities which included a Treasure Hunt, Petrified Potters, magical refreshments and a Grand Quiz which was won by Hufflpuff. We are holding an Open University Advice Desk on the 27 March 9.30-1 to explore possible options with the OU. Hope to see you soon. Arts Cantorion Coety Makes Positive Preparations
Cantorion Coety held their AGM, at Gilead Chapel, Coity recently, amidst an air of optimism from all concerned. The existing officers and officials were re-elected. The Chairman, Gareth Brace, thanked the Choir for commendable performances at concerts, and hoped that everyone would continue to enjoy their association with the choir during the coming year. Thanks were given to the Musical Director, Eira Paskin and accompanist, Gareth Waite, for their dedication and hard work. Looking forward to 2015, the Chairman announced that the Choir would be arranging their third Annual Concert in June, and will be performing at the 2015 ‘Choirs in the Castle’. The choir President, Dr. John Elfed Jones of Coity, was once again present, and his message of encouragement included a request that the Choir maintain their reputation for performing Welsh music and folk songs. Should anyone wish to have more information about securing the services of Cantorion Coety, please contact: Alun Roberts Jones, Choir PR Officer Tel: 01656 655162 robera22@btinternet.com
Cor Bro Ogwr Sings The Six Nations Cor Bro Ogwr plans something special for their forthcoming Spring concert. As a celebration of this year’s Six Nations event, the programme will be composed of music from each country. The first half features Italy with Puccini’s ‘Messa di Gloria’, one of his early works, written when he was just 18. It’s a joyful piece, hinting at his later operas. This will be followed by Holst ‘I Love My Love’ and Molloy’s well known favourite ‘Love’s Old Sweet Song’ or, as most of us know it – ‘Just a song at twilight’. Audience participation anticipated here! From Wales, our former conductor Edward-Rhys Harry’s setting of the Lord’s Prayer ‘Gweddi’r Arglwydd’, which holds a warm place in the choir’s heart as they sang it in St. Paul’s Chapel, Ground Zero, during their American tour of 2013. Faure’s ‘Cantique de Jean Racine’ fills the French spot, leaving the choir with one more song to choose to complete the programme. Rehearsals are going well, with new conductor Nick Bromilow working the choir hard following his first successful concert at Christmas. The concert is on April 11th at All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl. Tickets on the door, or by Tel. 01656 653326. Dominique Spearey

Porthcawl Male Choir Bottom bass David Richards MBE and baritone John Pearman, two long serving members of the choir have had their 25 years of service recognised with each being presented with a certificate and clock. The presentations were made by the choir chairman Roy Bowen at an open evening held recently in the Arlington Place Presbyterian Church where the choir rehearses each Tuesday and Friday. Both recipients are well known in the town not just as choristers but also for their contribution to other activities, David has served as Porthcawl’s town Mayor and was, until recently, Chair of the local British Legion, he was made an MBE, whilst serving as a senior Police officer. John is a former popular President of Porthcawl Rugby Club. Both addressed the choir and spoke of the enjoyment in being part of group who share a mutual interest in maintaining traditional Welsh male choral singing, of the pleasure in performing, both as Porthcawl Male Choir and in conjunction with other choirs, in entertaining audiences, locally, nationally and even internationally, with visits to Europe and the USA. But above all they most enjoy the camaraderie experienced in being members of Porthcawl Male Choir. John Williams PRO
Porthcawl Choral Society News We have two events organised for March. No tickets are necessary but there will be a retiring collection for charity. The choir are always looking for new members, especially tenors and bass (no auditions). Arts A Film Maker’s Point of View
Bridgend Male Choir News
Last month I mentioned the fact that the cost of buying film and paying for laboratory processing form a large part of a film budget, especially if it is being produced on limited funds, and I promised to elaborate. A traditional film-maker can choose between shooting 16mm or 35mm film – where 16mm was once routinely used in television productions and 35mm was reserved for cinema films and TV commercials. For my own productions, I usually use 16mm, but chose 35mm for ‘Dangerous Coast’ and ‘Ghosts of Glamorgan’. In round figures, I reckon on 400ft of 16mm film costing around £200, giving a screen running time of ten minutes, and the same 400ft length of 35mm, which will only run for four minutes, around £250. At that sort of amount, shooting is planned very well, so only shots that are absolutely necessary are taken, preferably once! Digital photography has turned things completely upside down, because memory cards are relatively cheap and can store much more screen time. So why keep shooting film? Well, digital cameras are very expensive and do not last long before they are replaced by new models. Also the formats themselves seem to go out of date very quickly. To me, film is still the obvious choice, and you cannot beat the look of it, either. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Tel: 01656 771775
The Choir’s local concert this month will be at 7pm on Friday 7th March at Brynteg Comprehensive Lower School (Heol Gam entrance). Appearing with the Choir are Vocelle Ladies Choir and the Choir of Oldcastle Primary School, Bridgend. Tickets, are £5 available from Felicity’s Jewellers in Nolton Street and at the venue, immediately prior to the Concert. There are good parking facilities. Most concerts undertaken support charities and good causes. This is no exception. This Concert will benefit the work of St John’s House Trust, which is committed to the preservation of the historical, architectural & constructional heritage of St John’s House on Newcastle Hill for the benefit of local people. The Trust was set up in 2012. There are four Grade 2 listed buildings in close proximity being Newcastle Castle; Newcastle House; St Illtyd’s Church with St John’s House making up the quartet as a hub for history in the area. On the 28th March, the Choir performs at Lea’s Cliff Theatre, Folkestone, supporting Kent Air Ambulance. Also appearing is pianist, Laurence Long, 2013 Young Musician of the Year. Less formally and spreading friendship through music, the Choir has accepted an invite to help Folkestone RFC celebrate its 40th birthday.” David T Burt, Media Officer
Stags World Of Rock Exclusive – Jack Heading For Stardom! I was very honoured to be invited to last month’s 57th American Grammy Awards Ceremony but decided to give it a miss after I found out that Ed Shearan was performing! However, as promised last time, exclusive news for the column that 20-year-old Cover Sluts joint singer, Jack Taylor from Rest Bay, Porthcawl, has moved to Los Angeles to join a four-piece boy-band being put together by a top management and productions team. They’ve already signed to a major worldwide record label, but as yet the band hasn’t a name – though I’ll keep you posted! Jack had been scouted for several months after his X-Factor appearance where he reached boot camp, through his YouTube clips and his live work with the Cover Sluts. He went to LA to audition in December and got the job, so he’s upped sticks to chase his dream! I wish Jack all the best with his career, he’s a highly talented and modest young man with his two feet firmly on the ground. Watch this space for more news. Keep an eye and ear out for new punk outfit Twisted, I’ve been told they’re pretty hot. And keep the calls coming! Stag Marks Tel: 07549 728356 Photo: Jack Taylor Seaside News | 46
Art in Focus This month at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff the focus is on: Historic Photography Uncovered (running until 19th April 2015). This exhibition traces the evolution of photography, as a scientific process, as a social record and a medium for artistic expression. The photographic material on display dates from the mid-19th to mid-20th century and shows how the history of photography relates to our own collections and the visual history of Wales. Discover the story of the Dillwyn Llewelyn family who were based at the Penllergare estate near Swansea in the mid-19th century. Their pioneering experiments in the new medium created astonishing images of the South Wales landscape and of their family life and social activities. Part of the display will also look at how photographic processes actually work, exploring the chemistry behind the images. You will also be able to view a wider selection of the images now digitised as part of the project, via the online database, which will be available in the gallery. The project of digitising historic photographs, along with the research of the subjects in these images, has been generously funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Music in Porthcawl
We’ve had some great presentations in the last month, including from Jenny Hibbert, Glyn Edmunds and Leigh Woolford. We also held our Club Competition Two. The competition was split into two sections, one for Prints and one for Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Jenny Hibbert expertly judged both competitions, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. In the Print Section the winner was David Jones with ‘The Great Escape’. Second place went to Richard Craze and third place went to Geoff Baker. In the Digital Section the winner was Trevor Owen with ‘Pink Lily’. Second place went to Geoff Baker and third place was shared between Paul Jones, Trevor Owen, John Corcoran, Geoff Baker and Dan Minto. Congratulations to David and Trevor for winning the competitions and a big thank you to all who participated for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Porthcawl is proud to announce that the Swansea Bach Choir will be returning to perform this Easter for the first time in five years. This is a very significant year for the choir, as they begin their 50th Season this coming September with special performances and an impressive programme of repertoire to celebrate this significant anniversary. The Swansea Bach Choir was formed by John Hugh Thomas OBE who has lived in Porthcawl since 1996 and produces highly acclaimed performances of the very best choral works from the past five centuries. The choir is currently led by conductor Greg Hallam, with many of its forty members are trained singers, music students, and teachers of music. The performance this Easter highlights another link between Porthcawl and the Swansea Bach. Mrs Rhiannon Giles, a member of the choir, will begin her new appointment as Head of Music at Porthcawl Comprehensive School after the Easter break. Rhiannon, also a past pupil of the school, is delighted to be returning with the choir to sing Allegri’s famous Miserere in the beautiful acoustic of All Saints Church. The choir will be performing an afternoon concert on Sunday 15th March at 3pm at All Saints Church. Please visit their website for further information and forthcoming concerts. Porthcawl & Swansea Bach Choir www.swanseabachchoir.org.uk
Kenfig Hill & District Male Voice Choir The Choir is already fully booked for the whole of this year and is rapidly filling its 2016 calendar. Along with some local concerts the choir has been invited to sing for the first time in Wimborne Minster in April, followed in May by return visit to the magnificent Victorian Normansfield Theatre in Teddington in concert for the Down’s Syndrome Society. In 2001 the Choir gave their first performance in Selby Abbey such is their popularity they have returned every other year; this year’s concert in September will be the eighth visit. But the highlight of the year is undoubtedly the Annual Concert in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. This year it’s on Saturday 4th July, and the Choir are joined once more by their two junior choirs Crescendo & Da Capo. This years show is entitled ‘It’s a Grand Night for Singing’ and with the guest appearance of Porthcawl’s very own rising star Stephan Ulberini it is expected once more to be a sell-out. Stephan, with his magnificent tenor voice, is currently studying for his MA in Opera Performance at the World famous Royal Academy of Music in London - following in the footsteps of stars such as Katherine Jenkins and Elton John. Sport Porthcawl RFC Under 7’s
Firstly, on behalf of the coaches, I would like to thank Seaside News for sponsoring our coach’s tops – they look great! Since the Christmas festivities, we have had matches against CRICC, Bryncethin, Bridgend Sports, Fairwater, Croesyrceiliog and Valley Ravens – a very busy post Christmas period so far. The boys have developed at a rate of knotts and the skill level is increasing quickly, resulting in excellent performances. Mark my words...there are some stars of the future! Happy 6 Nations! Geraint Evans
Rest Bay Nippers On Sunday the 8th February, the Rest bay Nippers went along to Swansea National pool to take part in the Welsh Still Water Championships. There were 11 clubs in total that took part this year. All the nippers had a fantastic day and really done everyone proud. Lots of medals and points were won. It was a very long but enjoyable day with a fantastic result. Rest Bay were amazing and kept their title of Welsh Champions for another year and were crowned the winners, but this time they have to share it with joint winners Rhoose S.L.S.C. A great team effort by all the nippers that attended. Who could ask for a better start to the year! Anyone wishing to join a great family club with great kids, please contact Chris by email chris.howells5@btinternet.com Cheryl Howells
