LETTERS REGENERATION, REGENERATION, REGENERATION Dear Editor, In the past Porthcawl was a place that many folk visited to enjoy a day out or holiday at the seaside. All the regeneration schemes that come from BCBC appear to focus on increasing the number of buildings in our town, perhaps to generate extra council tax? A few years ago the idea was to build some 1200 dwellings on the land behind Hillsboro place, through Salt Lake car park and even some of Griffin Park. The state of the town center is disgraceful! After rain, take a walk around the busy shopping area around the co-op shop on Lias Road and try to dodge the puddles on the pavement there and at the road junctions (I did write to BCBC in May 2019 on this point). I live in the old part of town and consider the council tax extortionate. So when I see the deterioration of the town, especially the Porthcawl Hotel, Glamorgam Holiday Hotel, Cosy Corner and cracked paving I have to wonder where does all the council tax money from Porthcawl go? Remember Bridgend town center was once a thriving place and is now a ghost town. Please don’t let this happen to Porthcawl. John Finney, Porthcawl
BRIAN SAUNDERS - AN APPRECIATION I always called him Mr Porthcawl Badminton. I refer to Brian Saunders who died in the Princess of Wales Hospital on February 6, aged 84. He was there for a course of intravenous antibiotics for a badly infected leg but contracted coronavirus. Brian contributed so much to the Porthcawl community in such a wide variety of fields. However, he will be particularly remembered for his involvement in badminton. He was a founder member of the Porthcawl club. A local leading figure in the sport described his contribution over the last 27 years as “outstanding, especially in the coaching of juniors.’’ There are literally hundreds of people who owe so much to his never diminished enthusiasm and infinite patience. His adult colleagues always enjoyed his company until ill-health meant he was unable to participate in recent times. But he never lost interest in his beloved club and was determined to return one day. Even having a leg amputated did not alter his attitude. “I can always hit a few shots from my wheelchair!“ he insisted. Such determination, such dedication. We shall eventually return to playing at the Porthcawl comprehensive school sports hall on Thursday evenings… but it will never be the same without Brian. Dave Bush, Chairman Porthcawl Badminton Club

REGENERATION PLANS PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, To the best of my knowledge the meaning of regeneration is the enhancement of an area for the benefit of future generations. Can anyone explain to me why building a supermarket and five storey apartments blocks on Salt Lake car park will give pleasure to future generations? If this crazy idea materialises then where are the day-trippers and residents going to park their cars to visit Porthcawl? At least 70% of Salt Lake car park should be resurfaced and designated to parking. The remaining 30% should be used for leisure alone. On many occasions in the summer months there is a tail back of cars queuing to get into Salt Lake car park as far back as the Laleston roundabout. This plan is not regeneration it is urbanization. The Bridgend County Council states that they need the money from the plan to kick start regeneration. Twenty years ago, the council closed the caravan park at Sandy Bay, in the name of regeneration. If they had sold the land at Sandy Bay for building twenty years ago then they would have accumulated millions of pounds in community charges from the hundreds of houses that could have been built on Sandy Bay. That land is worth mega millions of pounds. If they sold the land now it would pay for a new promenade, sea defences, a resurfaced car park at Salt Lake and leisure facilities for future generations to enjoy. The only leisure facility Porthcawl seafront provides is Griffin Park, which is totally inadequate. Approximately twenty years ago I attended a packed public meeting in the Seabank Hotel regarding regeneration. When one of the council’s representatives stated that their plan was to build a supermarket on Salt Lake, there was an outcry of objections. There was not one person in the meeting that agreed with the ridiculous idea and we haven’t changed our minds. In recent years Port Talbot and Barry have had millions of pounds spent on regenerating their seafronts, and not a supermarket in sight. May be representatives from Bridgend County Council should visit the above-mentioned seafronts to understand the meaning of regeneration. I cannot understand why our local MP and councillors are sitting back and letting this travesty happen. When they want our votes, they come knocking at our doors; they should be knocking on our doors with petitions objecting to these obscene plans. We are living in a democracy and Porthcawl residents should have their say. When is the public meeting on regeneration going to happen? I believe the majority of people living in Porthcawl are very angry over these plans and feel we are being sold down the river. I understand that the new Sunnyside development Bridgend has secured a £315,000 funding from the Welsh Government as part of a Transforming Towns Green space initiative. Has anyone on the council considered applying for a grant for his or her poor relations in Porthcawl? I thought Porthcawl was ‘the jewel in the crown’? It is anticipated that the library will reopen on Monday 15th March, either with a ‘book and collect’ service or for browsing and borrowing, subject to the Welsh Government alert level in place at that time. The renovation will involve rearranging and redecorating the front half of the library, to increase the size of the children’s library and move the public computers to a space with more privacy and closer to the printing facilities. The reception desk is also being moved to alleviate the ‘bottle neck’ it often creates near the library entrance, and to add more space for customers to browse for books, particularly when social distancing measures must be observed.

My step up for January challenge was just that, a challenge, but I did it and I cannot tell you 1, how pleased I am that I did it and 2, it’s over. It is actually harder than what you think. There were days I didn’t want to go out and do my steps, but I always felt healthier when I did them. Thank you to those who took part and for those who helped me complete my steps. We still don’t know whether or not we’ll be putting our annual charity ball on in May, so please do watch this space. We would really love to hear any fundraising ideas any of you may have but they’ll need to be COVID safe ideas. Don’t forget why we do all of this fundraising. We do it to help those who are going through treatment for Cancer. We help with things like gas, electric, council tax etc. All the bills that do still need to be paid. Please do keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. Anyway, do not forget to keep looking after yourselves as well as your friends, families and neighbours, wear those masks and keep a social distance. The sooner we adhere to the rules the sooner we can get back to normal fundraising. I just thought I would leave you with a quote I’ve recently seen which can be for anyone going through any difficult situation not just cancer and it’s this…….. How would you feel if a friend, family member or stranger said those words to you today? Instead of having to listen to someone else’s opinion coming from the TV, radio, phone or device you heard ‘You may be right’ instead. If you think you would be grateful to hear this, why not offer the phrase to another first. Maybe when you are having one of those days when you are experiencing conflict, perhaps with someone close to you who likes to argue or prove a point. Instead of engaging in the discussion cut it short and say to them, ‘You may be right’. They will then feel they have won and you will have ended the argument and walk away to spend time doing something you enjoy. What are the activities that you enjoy? Would you like to spend more time with your loved ones, pets, gardening, walking, reading, dancing, crafting, day dreaming? What do you like to do but have stopped and now takes too much effort to begin again? When we stop doing activities that bring joy we are left with work and other stressors and feel exhausted. PORTHCAWL COVID 19 STRATEGY GROUP
NEWS FROM THE MAYOR OF PORTHCAWL
The Group continues to help the community. Over the winter months our volunteers assisted Porthcawl Medical Centre with marshals for the flu vaccination and with the current roll out of the covid vaccination. Volunteers continue to shop for the vulnerable in the COOP on a daily basis. The COOP have employed some of our volunteers within store and increased their home delivery system to meet the demand. Our Ward Managers continue to assist with the more vulnerable in Porthcawl, arranging collection of prescriptions and delivery of medication. We have implemented a project to assist school children with home learning and some of the older residents with tech equipment for communicating with family and friends. We are extremely grateful to the community for donating old computers and laptops, which our Techguy Steve Flett has been upgrading with the necessary hardware and software compatible for use in Schools. We are grateful to our MP Jamie Wallis for the supply of laptops for the community. We have been raising funds to upgrade all of this equipment and this will be ongoing on our Justgiving page. Porthcawl...Love it, don’t trash it continues to evolve adding innovative new ideas targeting plastics/ litter with volunteers working from the new Rest Bay hub supported by BCBC cleaner streets newly created Community Engagement Team. New initiatives include: trialing several large recycling bins in specific areas to see how various recyclable litter can be collected. This will then lead into the Big Fish Project working with Naturequest which involves collecting all hard plastics from the beach and seafront areas and placing for collection in a giant dolphin like structure made from metal and other forms of recycled material which will be based along the seafront. It is planned to employ an artist to make the structure and it is hoped that the comprehensive school will be involved. The team has 8 months to put the project together for a funding application. New Hi Viz tops with the “Love it, don’t trash it “ logo enhances the project identity and also recognises the work the volunteers are undertaking. Thank you to our volunteers, residents, visitors and cleaner streets team for your support for this project which has made a huge difference in Porthcawl and which is now being rolled out throughout the borough.
HUGE THANKS TO OUR VACCINATION TEAMS Last month, the Welsh Government hit the first milestone in its vaccination programme of offering a first vaccination to the top four priority groups in Wales. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all involved in the vaccine roll out, for their incredible efforts. The Health Minister has said that take-up amongst these groups has been incredibly high. It was a pleasure to be invited by the local health board, Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, to visit Bridgend’s community vaccination centre to see just a small part of the set-up. During my brief visit, the centre was busy with lots of people coming and going. Speaking to some of the vaccination team, it was good to hear that there were no, no-shows, and that everyone who was given an appointment had their vaccination. It was very well organised, very efficient and I would like to thank all the team there for their truly heroic efforts. The Welsh Government is already looking ahead to meeting its next milestone as it now moves its focus to priority groups five to nine. VACCINATION SUCCESS As I write this, Wales has just been declared the first of the UK nations to have vaccinated everyone within the top four priority groups. That’s over 100,000 people across the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board region, more than 30,000 of whom are residents of Bridgend County Borough. This fantastic result is a sure sign of confidence in our national approach to dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Following a temporary closure to allow vaccination centres to be repurposed and for suitable stocks of the vaccine to be prepared, work is underway on phase two of the programme, which is focusing on the next set of priority groups. As part of this, a second vaccination centre has been established at Maesteg Sports Centre to join the existing facility based at the Ravens Court building in Bridgend. Mobile testing also continues to be available, and I strongly urge people to keep using this wherever appropriate. Even with the vaccine rolling out, it is going to take some time before the pandemic is confirmed as being finally over, and we are going to need to continue to follow official guidance for some time yet. NEWS NEW ROAD IMPROVEMENTS FOR HEOL MOSTYN Work will start on road safety improvements later this month at Heol Mostyn in Pyle. The £540,000 improvements will focus on the junction with the A48, and are being carried out as part of the development of an all-new community recycling centre on the Village Farm Industrial Estate. Designed to improve congestion and increase the flow of traffic around the estate, the works will introduce a new dedicated lane for turning into and out of Heol Mostyn, a new traffic island, traffic signals and full carriageway resurfacing. At the same time, the new recycling centre will feature bays for 24 cars at a time, and on-site queuing capacity for 72 vehicles. With a split-level system enabling access to higher-sided recycling containers and bypass lanes to allow better movement, the site will also feature a re-use shop similar to the one based at the Maesteg community recycling centre, which is run by Wastesavers – a really useful facility which ensures that items in good condition can be resold at low prices to benefit local good causes. BACK TO THE FUTURE? How many of you remember the Promenade Princess? This was the brightly painted land-train, which used to run along Porthcawl’s seafront up to Rest Bay during the summer. It was a source of great excitement for the children on board and many of the mums, dads, grans and grandpas also on the train secretly enjoyed a nostalgic trip back to their own childhoods. I am told that for many years there was another train that ran on tracks along the edge of Salt Lake parallel to the Eastern Promenade. It even had its own “tunnel” through a very unrealistic-looking rocky hillside. That train was relegated to the scrap yard decades ago but the Promenade Princess is far more recent, finally ending its runs in 2008. So news that BCBC has advertised for an operator to run a similar train while welcome – and fun – is not a replacement for the lost Maritime Centre. BCBC needs a modern, ambitious tourism strategy for the borough, which recognises the role Porthcawl should play in this under-exploited part of the Welsh economy. MAKING SURE PUPILS DO NOT MISS OUT Thousands of devices ranging from laptops and PCs to Chromebooks and tablets have been distributed to schools since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. As part of Welsh Government’s Hwb project, local schools have taken receipt of more than 4,500 new devices since February 2020, and a further 2,000 are scheduled to be provided by March 2021. The equipment is designed to be used both within schools and at home to support pupils who may not otherwise have access to computers or WI-FI. The Hwb project is supporting Bridgend County Borough Council’s efforts to ensure that children can benefit from a continuity of learning despite the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This has resulted in the purchase of more than 500 new laptops, 300 dongles for home internet access, and the rebuilding of 550 older laptops. As a result, no child has had to miss out on their education while staying safe at home, and they have been able to remain in touch with teachers and friends. These are some of the most challenging circumstances that schools have ever had to face, and I would like to congratulate everyone who has helped to deliver this project for local children. NEW SCHEME HELPS PEOPLE INTO JOBS I have written to hundreds of businesses urging them to offer young people placements under the UK Government’s Kickstart Scheme. This has been set up to enable employers to take on young people aged between 16 and 24, who are on Universal Credit, in a six-month placement, which is fully funded by the UK Government. This will cover 100 per cent of the age-relevant National Minimum Wage, National Insurance and pension contributions for 25 hours a week. Employers can top up the hours if they choose and they will also receive a £1500 grant per placement to cover the set-up costs. In return, employers will give young people valuable experience of work while helping their long term prospects with things like career advice, support for interviews and also teaching them new skills. I hope employers will take advantage of this new scheme, which has just opened to applications. NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS Pupils, parents and staff at Nottage have been coping brilliantly throughout this spring term with daily check-ins, video and interactive lessons, creating home learning packs and on-site provision for those whose parents are working right on the frontline. We need to say a big ‘thank you’ to our lovely cleaners who are putting in hours above and beyond to keep us all super safe. We’d also like to thank the Porthcawl Covid-19 Strategy Group for their donation of refurbished PC’s, laptops and tablets to help our digitally excluded learners access their Google Classroom and connect with their peers and teachers. On February 1st we had a virtual whole school assembly to launch Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme was ‘Express Yourself’ and we enjoyed seeing the variety of creative ways our learners chose to express their thoughts and feelings on Google Classroom and our on-site provision. It was lovely to see whole families engaged with this theme and we know their creative positivity will carry them through these challenging times and beyond. PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE NEWS The MFL Department would like to say a bit well done and thank you to our Year 9 pupils for producing some excellent Berlin Wall graffiti for our Divided Germany topic. Twinkl, a well-known education site has told us that they were absolutely “blown away” by the amazing work produced by our “thoughtful and talented students” and will be featuring their work as part of their Berlin Wall Memorial Project. Many congratulations to Year 13 pupil Nia Clatworthy who has signed up to attend Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas in September. She has been awarded a full sports and academic scholarship and will compete for the university on the track and at cross country for the next 4 years. Nia has been an outstanding and dedicated athlete during her time at PCS and we wish her well and feel certain that she will make the most of her exciting opportunity. Pupils are working hard at their Eisteddfod entries, both on and off stage at the moment, with the majority of traditional competitions still running, albeit in a virtual way. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Dear all, I hope and pray you are well in these strange times. This month I would like to say something about the incarnation of Jesus. Surgeons will tell you of a medical term that’s called ‘incarning’. This is when a piece of flesh or skin is taken from one part of the body and put on another part, that has been damaged in some way. The flesh or skin that is applied then brings healing to the damaged part. When Jesus, (who is the Son of God) became human and took on flesh, a healing process started for broken humanity. He faced everything we will ever face and became victorious over it, ultimately proving that in his resurrection. Even death has been swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15 v 54). So, when we come into relationship with Jesus and become united with him, his life starts to flow into our life, giving us victory over all the troubles of the world. Some are still there but we stand in a different position facing them. In Christ, we can face the world strongly, victoriously and knowing the hope of eternal life with God. KIDNEY WALES FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE The Porthcawl Fundraising Committee of Kidney Wales has recently donated funds to purchase a specialised Blood Pressure Monitor for University Hospital of Wales Transplant Unit. This piece of equipment was purchased in memory of Vice Chairman Judith French who very sadly passed away in November 2020. Judith had been a patient of the Transplant Unit and was passionate about fundraising for Kidney Research. Over the years she helped organize many events such as Ascot Ladies Day in the Hi Tide, Porthcawl, Coffee Mornings and Craft sales, which raised thousands of pounds for the Charity. The Transplant Unit at UHW and the Dialysis Unit in Llantrisant benefited from many donations of equipment, which improved the experience of patients during their treatment. Judith will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Kathryn Roper
BRIDGEND TOWN TWINNING ASSOCIATION B.T.T.A. recently held their Annual General Meeting for 2021. Due to current restrictions this meeting was held electronically via Zoom, which was obviously a first for many of us. Mr Adrian Kendall (Chair) outlined the activities of the last year which, of course due to Covid 19, were cut short last March. We were able to host our student exchange from Villenave d’Ornon in France in February 2020, before lockdown measures were introduced. As always this was a successful week with lots of activities planned, highlighting Welsh culture and history. Mr Kendall wished to thank local families, who hosted the students with a warm Welsh welcome and also thanked Mrs M. Walters (Secretary of B.T.T.A.) and Mrs Debra Walsh (Head of Modern Languages at Brynteg School) for arranging the programme of events. After discussion all officers agreed to remain in post for 2021. Mrs Walters told the meeting that she had received news from Villenave d’Ornon regarding a Zoom conference in March to discuss future twinning links for the period 2021-2026. Over the last year, we have all had to adjust to a new normal but one of the memories I will take from this fraught time is how generous people have been with their time, money, and resources. Bridgend Labour Women’s Forum has been collecting toiletries for the Women’s Refuge and we have been overwhelmed by the response. Many women arrive at refuges with only the clothes on their back. Taking a shower or bath and being able to wash your hair and brush your teeth are so important when someone has been through a traumatic experience. What did we talk about before jabs and vaccines? The weather? Hopefully, March has already moved us on so we can forget how bitterly cold February was. Have our memories been wiped by Covid? A friend asked today whether I remembered how we used to do something? I said I couldn’t remember except Scrabble or doing jigsaws and even Scrabble is on computer, but I play Scrabble with good friends I didn’t even know liked Scrabble pre covid and with my Grandson. Grandsons in my experience usually play Scrabble after Monopoly, only in the Christmas holidays. Computers are reserved for games Grandmas wouldn’t want to play, like Pokemon although you can if you want to, even do a jigsaw on computer. I already do too much on my computer, but I did before covid! It’s not what I want to do. I want to meet a friend and walk on the beach and have lunch out. Do you remember lunch out? I cannot walk on the beach, I have the river and make do with that but am still jealous of those of you who can walk on the beach. We are getting closer to being free? Stay safe - we will meet again. PORTHCAWL ROTARY ROUNDUP Who would have thought that the Rotary Porthcawl would be meeting virtually? Surely an “Old Boys’ Luncheon Club” would never cope with the technological advances that come so naturally to three-year-olds? And yet here we all are on Zoom! We meet every Monday at noon for an hour. Out of a total membership of 40 members, 30 of us have been seen on the screen. And, if you look carefully, you will see that many of our members are ladies. Gradually the image of Rotary is changing to keep pace with the society it serves. Our club is 70 years old this year and yet the motto we adopt is ageless: “Service before Self”. We have not been able to meet face to face nor been able to run our usual events but we are constantly looking to support our community. We reported last month on our donation to KPC. We sent funds to Madagascar to equip a school and we support the Doctor Bank initiative, which sends doctors and nurses to Africa. GOOD NEWS FOR PARKINSON’S UK/ CYMRU CHARITY The adverse effect of the March 2020 arrival of coronavirus on the work of all charity fundraising has been significant. From cancelled coffee mornings and table sales to postponed concerts and sponsored walks, Parkinson’s and others have had to revise their spending plans. Research and support of those with the disease has taken a knock. The local Parkinson’s Bridgend branch has nevertheless managed to increase its fund-raising by 20% year on year and been able to send in excess of £6,000 towards this important work, which includes on line classes for singing; speech and communication and Tai Chi. Help with voice, breathing and balance are welcome components. The latest venture is the idea of local schoolteacher, Joanne Matthews who suggested Welsh themed PPE masks for St David’s Day. Joanne, together with her parents and her father’s cousin, retired schoolteacher Angela Williams set about the task. The finite amount of cotton; manufacture; cost sponsorship and sales has resulted in £750 income towards the current year’s challenge. Thanks to all and mostly to those who bought. HISTORY WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE THE RESTORATION OF SKER HOUSE Peggy Knight completed her SOE training in only two weeks. In April 1944, after a single practice jump, she parachuted into France as ‘Nicole’ to work for the highly compromised Donkeyman network. Following D-Day, Peggy crossed the battle lines many times, carrying intelligence messages and gathering vital information. She did this by travelling vast distances on her bicycle. She also participated in an attack upon a Nazi military convoy, firing her Sten submachine gun. Later in 1944, Peggy narrowly escaped capture and execution when one of her colleagues, Roger Bardet, betrayed her group of resistance fighters to the Nazis. One of thirty people, Peggy fought her way out of a forest through the encirclement. Bardet was later arrested. Although sentenced to death as a collaborator, he was released from prison in 1955. Highly praised by the SOE for her bravery and commitment, after the war Peggy settled down to a life of domesticity. MORE FROM THE MUSEUM ARCHIVES In the early 1930’s the main grocer in John Street was ‘Langdon’s.’ Young men were apprenticed, or indentured, and served five years in the trade. Weekly, they had to visit houses for family grocery orders often trudging as far as Maudlam, Ton Kenfig, Pyle and Kenfig Hill. Langdon’s occupied three premises in the street with the main shop originally being where Super Value and Price Carver are today. Taken in 1935 the photo shows Hillier’s Pork Butchers (now Fone Excellence) and another of Langdon’s Grocers (now Shireen). The shop to the right is Thomas & Evans, which had moved into the present-day Price Carver premises. To the left and on the first floor are the Celtic Cafe and Tea Rooms, which had been used for a short time in the late 1920’s by non-conformists. Welsh Congregationalists originally had a base in Hope Chapel Newton, but wished a presence in Porthcawl itself and settled in the café awaiting the building of Tabernacl in Fenton Place in 1931.Incidentally, to accommodate the chapel a few houses had to be demolished, one of which, No 18, was Captain Ralph Picton Daniel mother’s Naomi. I thought maybe your readers would be interested in this photograph of Sker House, which I found while sorting through photographs during the lockdown. My father was Captain Mark Dawe of the 24th Porthcawl Mounted Home Guard who patrolled the perimeter of the town on horseback. He used to tell us that when they patrolled the coast in the evenings they would refresh their horses at Sker House and then they would be invited into the Great Hall where the owner refreshed them also! WWI - THE BELGIAN REFUGEES IN BRIDGEND In August 1914 German forces demanded safe passage through neutral Belgium on their way to attack France, but the Belgian government refused. As the Germans forced their way through, cities were burnt and civilians were murdered. Terrified Belgians fled in their hundreds of thousands, and many came to Britain, including the cities, towns, and villages of Wales. For many people in Wales helping the ‘plucky’ refugees was their way of contributing to the wider war effort, and the Belgians were greeted with open arms. By early 1915 about 1327 refugees had made their way to the Glamorgan area. Around 15 people were accommodated in ‘Glenavon’ (now Riversdale Surgery) and the Kerkoff family were in Brewery House as the guests of Newcastle Church. LEGAL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I believe my husband is having an affair. Last week he moved out of the house and I want to file for divorce. He will not admit to the affair, can I look through his bank statements to find evidence? Answer: Absolutely not. Though tempting, looking through your spouse’s private documents such as bank statements or emails can lead to serious repercussions and is a potential criminal offence. This comes as a shock to many clients, especially if they have easy access to their spouses email accounts or mail. However, there is no benefit in doing so. This week, we have seen headlines such as ‘Man sues wife for ‘opening bank statement to see if he was having an affair’. After separating from her husband, Karen Santi looked through her husband’s documents to confirm her suspicions. Whilst this may be seen to many as an understandable thing to do, the Court viewed this as an invasion of her husband’s privacy and was ordered to pay her husband 54,000 in damages. This shows how serious approach the Court takes to confidentiality. The same goes for searching for evidence of finances. Some clients believe that their spouses are not truthful about the amount of money or assets they have. Even though you may believe that you can search their private documents for evidence, doing so can result in serious consequences. In family law proceedings, there is an on going duty to give ‘full and frank disclosure of your assets’. If you believe your spouse is not giving full disclosure, it is best to issue proceedings so you may ask the Court to impose sanctions for non-disclosure. It is always best to first seek legal advice before you begin the divorce process. WITNESSING WILLS IN A COVID-19 WORLD Under current UK law, for a Will to be valid it must be signed by the testator in the presence of two independent adults. Due to lockdown and the complications that have arisen with the Wills process the government has now made it legal for remote witnessing of Wills. Last year Ministers acted to reassure the public that Wills witnessed in such a way will be deemed legal, as long as the quality of the sound and video is sufficient to see and hear what is happening. These changes were made via new legislation in September 2020, and the measures will be backdated to 31 January 2020 – meaning any Will witnessed by video technology from that date onwards will be legally accepted. The change will currently remain in place until 31 January 2022. It is important to note that the use of video technology should remain a last resort, and where possible people must continue to arrange physical witnessing of Wills where it is safe to do so. At the moment the Government have not proposed any alternative to the requirement that a Will be in writing. Therefore oral or video recorded (audio or audio-visual) statements will not suffice. THE DIFFERENCE THAT MARRIAGE MAKES The recent TV series “Finding Alice” illustrated the pitfalls of being unmarried when one partner dies. In the programme, Alice mistakenly believes that she has the same status as a wife despite the fact that she and Harry were never married. As she finds out to her cost, this is not the case. It is a common misconception that people who live together become “common law spouses” after a certain period of time. Such a status does not exist in law. Cohabitees have no automatic legal standing to deal with the other’s affairs. Nor are they “next of kin” for the purposes of inheritance, or indeed for the purposes of making any major decisions about the deceased’s affairs. Alice’s predicament is worsened by the fact that her home is owned by Harry’s parents, Harry having placed it in his parents’ names to avoid business complications. If she and Harry had owned the house as “joint tenants”, then Alice would have automatically inherited Harry’s share upon his death. Even if they had decided to own the property in two separate shares, as “tenants in common”, Alice would have found herself protected

because she owned half of the home and Harry’s parents would not have been able to sell it without a court order. Many of Alice’s problems would have been non-existent had she and Harry decided to marry or form a Civil Partnership. This would have made them each other’s next of kin and she would have automatically inherited from Harry under the intestacy rules. Even if she and Harry were opposed to marriage, they could have made mutual wills and made arrangements for each other to be beneficiaries of insurance policies and pensions, which would have made her position easier. FINANCE ACRONYMS & JARGON It’s enough to drive you totally batty but the financial services industry is riddled with hundreds of acronyms for their products, services and trade bodies. You could virtually have a conversation in total jargon and people would be right in thinking you’ve lost the plot. For example, I’m an IFA with a qualification from the CII, each year I need my SPS certificate following lots of CPD’s or I can’t act for you. We’re overseen by the FCA and BoE and HMRC, we also deal with FSCS, pay our ICO fees for GDPR, comply with FSMR and MIFID 1&2 PROD & PRIP. Yes exactly who or what is this I hear you ask? Just to be sure for all of this we have comprehensive PII cover. My best clients are HNW and some even SHNW they invariably need advice on IHT & CGT then sometimes SPV’s, along with VCT’s & EIS’s. We review their CIA’s & GIA’s CIB’S & CRA regularly. The HNW clients have taken our FUM over 50M so this year our EBITDA looks good and that’s not a film. We have a client seeking an IPO soon he’s involved in a JV and several who need TVAS reports or AVR. DEADLINE TO BREADLINE – THIS COULD BE YOU Meet Gary. He’s a good hardworking family man and he’s been fortunate that his employer has managed to keep him employed during challenging times in the last year. With his wife working only part-time and home schooling the children at present, it’s been a hard year for them just like with millions of other families. Last weekend however really scuppered their plans, both for Gary’s work and many others, as he suffered an unfortunate accident, completely out of the blue and which will keep him sidelined for possibly several months to come, unable to work. debts, mortgage or rent arrears, etc., etc. NOT a nice situation to be in. Spring usually arrives mid- March (if we’re lucky!) warmer weather and sunnier days mean more gardening tasks. We also welcome the lovely daffodil, no flower heralds spring quite like to golden daffodil, and it represents rebirth and new beginnings, wonderful! Sow parsnips as soon as the soil warms up, they are notoriously erratic at germinating so sow plenty. Time to plant onion and shallot sets too, making sure the beds are free of weeds so they don’t have to compete for nutrients as this will affect their size! Try planting strawberries in a hanging basket so that even the most acrobatic slug can’t get at the fruit! Delicious and pretty too! Guess what? Time to start mowing the lawn again once they start back into growth (my husband will be thrilled!) Split clumps of primroses after they die down and plant in an odd corner ready to replant somewhere pretty next spring, fab flowers. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB Spring is here at last, the daffodils are in bloom and it’s a time of new beginnings. Even if we are still having to stay close to home in these difficult times, when the weather permits at least our gardens and allotments can provide us with a worthwhile pastime and therapy too. Jobs for March are a plenty, lawns can have their first cut (weather permitting), and onion sets, shallots and early potatoes can be planted. Plant summer flowering bulbs, lift and divide overgrown perennials, cut back dogwoods and those weeds will start to appear so good to keep them under control. Containers can be top dressed with new compost. Watch our Facebook page for news about our shop - we will be open for business as soon as permitted. ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK While most bands are at a standstill with the ongoing pandemic, some bands are making the most of the lockdown. Bridgend top rockers, Those Damn Crows, who have had a couple of stellar years, have released a new ultimate edition of their great album “Point of No Return” which features four bonus acoustic tracks plus a new track and video called “Sick of Me”. It really is hot. The Crows also do a regular podcast each week so check them out. The group had to cancel their British and European tour (with The Dead Daisies) and festival dates which included main stage at the Download event. I’ve known the guys for years from their early days when they were known as Shirker and recorded in myself and Dale’s home studio, as well as coming on my radio shows. They had talent even then and the hard work is paying off. As that saying goes: “Never give up on your dream!” I will keep you up to date on the boys’ progress. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW When I was a teenager, one of the pleasures at the end of a week in school was to settle in front of the television at 7.30pm on Friday to watch The Persuaders, with Roger Moore as Lord Brett Sinclair and Tony Curtis as Danny Wilde. Produced by Robert S. Baker, it ran for 24 episodes in just one series screened in late 1971 and early 1972, and it represented one of many ITC (Incorporated Television Company) shows that brought adventure to the screen with 35mm cinema quality. The first episode, “Overture”, was broadcast on 17th September 1971, and I remember being captivated by the opening titles and John Barry’s music. What I failed to notice, though, was something that I only spotted recently when viewing the episode again on YouTube. It was the shot that comes soon after the title sequence, when Brett Sinclair’s Aston Martin DBS begins its race with Danny Wilde’s Ferrari Dino 246GT in the South of France. But the shot was a camera operator’s dream, because in the background, an airliner is taking off from Nice Airport. Last week we had the pleasure of working out the total amount raised by the 56th Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim. With lockdown and social distancing to contend with we set out hoping to do our best and try and raise something for Wales Air Ambulance and other local charities and organisations. We accepted early on in our planning that a traditional beach event on Christmas Day was unlikely to be possible so started planning the Virtual Swim instead. We weren’t sure how successful it would be but felt we had to give it a go and ensure the 56th Swim went ahead one way or another. The support we received was amazing and we are both amazed and delighted to have raised a staggering £9,000 to be distributed between Wales Air Ambulance and 22 local charities and organisations. Thank you to everybody that took part, donated and joined in the fun! Particular thanks to all of our advertisers and especially to Driven Taxis for sponsoring the commemorative mugs. Entries are also now being invited for a ‘Mayday’ 5km run, jog or walk, any day in May, in order to raise money for Porthcawl RNLI.
