COASTAL PATH GEM

Dear Editor, We wanted to thank everyone who GET £30,000 TAR has given so generously and supported our aim to raise £30,000 to purchase a second caravan at Trecco Bay and donate it to Latch, the Welsh Childrens Cancer Charity. Any donations can be made through Just Giving Karavan 4 The Kidz, or contact us through our Karavan 4 The Kidz Facebook page or Emyr Owen branch of Latch page, here you’ll find more information about Latch and a list of different fundraising dates so you can get involved . Incredibly our running total has reached £23,000. Thank you again for ALL your kind donations and also thanks to The Christmas Morning Swim Committee, Adran ac Aelwyd yr Urdd, Leanne Crole and Shop for Charity, Jean, Peter Downes and their friends. If we could ask for one last drive we would be incredibly grateful, knowing that more children who have been diagnosed with the awful disease that cancer is, and their families will benefit from spending fun time together. Maybe you could participate in this upcoming bike ride or sponsor one of the riders? On 30th April, Dougy Burgess (07877 891954), Mike Sims (simms.m2@sky.com), Gary Walford and Lisa Hier are organising a cycle from Brecon to the Greenacres, where there will be a completion party. There will be transport and refreshments on route for the riders. It’s a £20 entry. If you would like more information on the ride or how to sponsor a rider please contact the guys above. We would love the local community to continually embrace this project and see what we can achieve together - we have been fortunate to have had some large donations, but please do not worry if you cannot raise too much; if everyone who read the Seaside News, donated even a pound; we’d have three caravans! Many thanks again for your amazing support. Karavan 4 the Kidz

Dear Editor, Thought you could use this photo of mine, for those who have not used the coastal path to see this gem and our fabulous coast views. Mwynhau (enjoy). Terry Rees, Porthcawl

RE: TAI CHI NEWS ARTICLE (February issue, page 49) Dear Editor, I am a little perplexed on reading the above article in your February 2016 issue of Seaside News. Your writer state’s in the first paragraph that the claims of Tai Chi being beneficial for health has “no medical scrutiny”, but in the next paragraph goes on to say that the modern, shortened forms of the same moves are “periodically updated by medical experts”. This is contradictory to say the least. I have been practising Tai Chi for a number of years now and can assure you that there is documentation of studies carried out on the effect of Tai Chi on various medical conditions. Further more, I have been following this article for some time now and it seems to me that this is not so much a news letter on Tai Chi in general, but an advertisement for the writers’ own therapy program for his own purposes and not for the general interest in Tai Chi. Yours respectfully, Haydn James, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL REGENERATION Dear Editor, At last progress is being made in the regeneration of Porthcawl thanks to the efforts of two private developers. One developer in the upgrading and reconstruction of the Jennings Building and the other consortium the Harbourside CIC in the construction of a new multi-purpose building on the land adjoining the harbour. It will be financed by coastal community fund inc, lottery and other organisations. BCBC’s only involvement will be providing the land for the new building so that there should be no problem with the progress of the project. The new multi-purpose building will house a swimming pool mainly for therapeutic purposes, sauna, gym, oxygen tank and accommodation for the sea cadets, surfers, coastal life centre, a large conference hall and other facilities. We are fortunate that the architect for this project is Stuart Bentley who is a native of Porthcawl and consequently well versed in the needs of Porthcawl. He is ably assisted by four hardworking colleagues in Mike Clarke, Mark Bryant, Claire Godfrey and Barrie Metcalfe. The two projects should be completed within the next two to three years. On completion of the multi-purpose building the five participating in this project should be honoured and acknowledged by the town council and public in appreciation of their sterling and tireless efforts in providing this special building for the benefit of the town. John Jenkins, Porthcawl

EXTREMELY GRATEFUL PORTHCAWL RESIDENT Dear Editor, Could you please print my letter in the Seaside News. I would sincerely like to thank the four people who took care of me on Saturday 23rd January, after I was taken ill in Hillsborough car park. They stayed with me for 20 minutes until the ambulance arrived, and were absolutely lovely. I am extremely grateful. There are good people in Porthcawl. Jennifer Bater, Porthcawl

SCHOOLS SAVING TIME, SAVING LIVES!

Pupils at St Clare’s, Porthcawl were thrilled when Paul Canning from Wales Air Ambulance visited their special Prep and Senior school assemblies with WAA mascot Huw “Hems”. (We should explain that “HEMS” stands for Helicopter Emergency Medical Service)! Wales Air Ambulance is our national air ambulance charity, providing emergency air cover for those who face lifethreatening illness or injuries. Their dedicated aircrews are on standby for everyone, anywhere in Wales. Wales Air Ambulance’s motto is “Saving time, saving lives”. The charity relies entirely on charitable donations to keep the helicopters in the air for Wales, so St Clare’s pupils and staff raised almost £600 by wearing red to school and holding cake sales. The special visit was organised by Year 10 pupils who belong to the school branch of Rotary called Interact Club. Their chosen charity this year is Wales Air Ambulance. Liz Lougher, a senior teacher at St Clare’s said, “We’re really proud of our Interact Club pupils. They develop very useful life skills in being active members of the local community.” If you would like to find out more about how you can support the charity, go to http://walesairambulance.com/en/donate-towales-charity Simon Antwis Headmaster Picture captions: Wales Air Ambulance gets the thumbs up at St Clare’s

AFON Y FELIN NEWS We are so proud! After being placed in the Red Category of the National School Categorisation System last year, not only are we no longer Red, we have skipped the Amber Category altogether, and have now been judged to be a YELLOW school. This means we have been judged to be an Effective School with good learner outcomes. We also have a good understanding of performance and self-improvement. This has been made possible by the dedicated hard work of Ms Nicola Williams and our staff and governors. We celebrated our success by playing host to the Mayor of Bridgend, Cllr. Richard Young and his Mayoress Annette Young, along with Cllr. Huw David. They visited the classes, and answered the pupils’ questions. Our attendance has also increased, and is currently higher than the County’s average for last year. The ECO Committee and pupils are working towards gaining ECO Green Flag Status. AJ Pritchard Parent Governor

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY TO GROW SEEDS FROM SPACE! We are preparing to become space biologists and embark on a voyage of discovery by growing seeds that have been into space. In September, 2kg of rocket seeds were flown to the International Space Station on Soyuz 44S where they will spend several months in microgravity before returning to Earth in March 2016. The seeds have been sent as part of Rocket Science, an educational project launched by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency. Porthcawl Primary School will be one of up to 10,000 schools to receive a packet of 100 seeds from space, which they will grow alongside seeds that haven’t been to space and measure the differences over seven weeks. The pupils won’t know which seed packet contains which seeds until all results have been collected by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and analysed by professional biostatisticians. The out-of-this-world, nationwide science experiment will enable the pupils to think more about how we could preserve human life on another planet in the future, what astronauts need to survive long-term missions in space and the difficulties surrounding growing fresh food in challenging climates. Follow the project on Twitter: @RHSSchools #RocketScience and @porthcawlprimary

SCHOOLS WHAT DID WE DO THIS TERM AT WEST PARK? Early Years Unit made Christingles and visited St David’s Church for a special service with Father Craig. They also had fun “Blinging Their Bikes!” Year 1 and 2 visited Cardiff for a wonderful day out to support their theme. They had a guided tour of the Castle and the Museum and were very well behaved. Mrs Lewis has been Walking Through the Bible with year 6. Year 6 attended a DT morning at Porthcawl Comprehensive and pupils have enjoyed regular English and Maths lessons with Year 7 teachers as part of the transition process. They enjoyed writing diaries about a Day in The Life of Tudors at Sea! Year 3 and 4 hosted a wonderful Tudor Festival for each other. They dressed for the occasion and produced goblets and decorations for a Tudor feast complete with Mead, Tudor biscuits and roast pork. Year 5 enjoyed discussing healthy eating and comparing their own diets with those of the Tudors. They also learned how to perform a flowing gymnastic sequence in PE. A special mention to Jessica who made the brave decision to cut off her hair to donate to the Princess Trust - how kind. Mr Bird Head Teacher

NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS With Easter fast approaching the school year is racing by! Once again the beginning of March saw eggs and incubator arrive in our Reception Class where the children witnessed the arrival of new life as the chicks slowly pecked from their shells. What an experience! During February the children were involved in fundraising for the NSPCC. The children took part in a sponsored fitness activity and raised in excess of £1300. A fantastic effort for a worthy cause! Year 6 have braved the weather and been put through their paces with an intensive cycling course. A big thank you to the instructors involved. Safety was the order of the day when the Fire Service came to Year 2 to teach the children about the dangers of fire in the home. Kerb-Craft for Year 2 also started after half term. Our Reception class were ornithologists during February and, in spite of the shocking weather, they took part in the ‘Big Schools’ birdwatch. K Townley Seaside News | 16

‘A’ STATUS IN CAPACITY TO IMPROVE As we approach our Spring term I am delighted to announce that Welsh Government have once again awarded Cynffig Comprehensive School ‘Yellow’ status in the National School Categorisation; the second highest category. This year we also celebrate category ‘A’ status in Capacity to Improve. We are justifiably proud of this achievement; it reflects our excellent results and our commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed at our school. Year 8 pupils have enjoyed a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) activity ‘Athlete or Machine’. Pupils learned about the sport of Bob Skeleton and after extracting mathematical and technical knowledge, made a 1:5 scale model of a Bob Skeleton. A period of testing followed, involving measurement of input force compared to the length of travel of the scale models. Pupils impressed with informed answers to the question, ‘Is it the athlete or the machine?’ Congratulations to talented Year 9 pupil Lowri Thomas who has been selected as Vice Captain to represent Wales in the U14’s girl’s basketball tour to Malta. Pupils are busy preparing for Cynffig’s annual Eisteddfod. Everyone is invited to join us on Thursday 17th March for highlights of the competition at our Eisteddfod concert. NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been an exciting half term with many trips to enhance learning. Year 3 and 4 visited Red Hot Buffet in Cardiff to experiences tasting a range of foods from around the world as part of their topic ‘Global Gourmet’. Year 5 and 6 visited Cardiff Museum as part of their topic ‘Gallery’ where they looked at all the beautiful artwork. Newton Primary School has received a very positive inspection report, which rates both its current performance and prospects for improvements as ‘good’. Estyn inspectors reported “many pupils make good progress and achieve highly, as well as standards of wellbeing being good”. During their visit in November they found the quality of teaching to be good, as well as providing pupils with a wide range of interesting and engaging experiences. The school’s prospects for improvement are good because leaders work together well to provide purposeful direction and clear vision for the development of the school. Leaders and managers are also effective in ensuring high quality teaching and the sharing of good practice between staff. It was also noted that the school has a good track record of raising pupil performance. Rachel John Head Teacher

Good luck to them all in the competition and their fund raising efforts between now and June. Congratulations also to Morgan Sweet in year 7 who in December swam three miles in Pencoed swimming pool as part of his personal fund raising campaign for Cancer Research. Once all the pledges have been collected he will have raised £1,000 target he had in mind for 2015. Morgan is now looking forward to raising more money in 2016. And finally, congratulation to Dean Ronan, our Rugby Development Officer on being appointed Forwards Coach for the Wales Women Senior National Team for this year’s Six Nations Competition. Since joining Pencoed Comprehensive in September 2016 Dean has been hugely instrumental in increasing participation in rugby by boys and girls at school and local club level. Best wishes to Dean and the team for a successful competition! Linda Harpwood

Our Nursery class has been celebrating Chinese New Year! The year of the monkey was marked with various activities such as making masks, lanterns and lucky money envelopes. The children have visited the local take away and thoroughly enjoyed a Chinese Banquet in class. Everyone dressed in red and sampled a menu which included poppadums’, prawn crackers, spring rolls, chicken in batter and sweet and sour sauce. The children made a dragon head and body and their celebrations ended with a dragon dance in our assembly for the whole school to see! N Pryce Head Teacher

TECHNOLOGY Q. I’m thinking about upgrading my PC with a new graphic

but I’m lost as to which one to pick, can you assist. Martin, Bridgend.

A.

Gaming graphic cards are great to enhance your computer gaming performance and as your rightly said, there are many different types but you can split them into 2 categories, Nvida and AMD. In many ways, which card you can choose is based on your budget and your current PC configuration in terms of physical space inside the PC case and what power rating your power supply is. If you have no restriction in budget or space inside your PC then the top card currently is the Nvida Titan X Graphic Card which retails at £800+. The card boasts a massive specification which includes 12Gb of superfast memory but requires a power supply with at least 600 watts output and in most cases, it’s total overkill unless you are planning on playing your games in a dual screen 4k config. In terms of the most popular card on the market currently, I would say anything from the Nvida GeForce GTX 900 series will do a great job. These cards start at around £250 for the GeForce 970 but if you can stretch to £650 you can have the very impressive GTX 980ti card which has 6gb of DDR5 ram. If your budget is restrictive, then the AMD Range offer a very good range of cards which are not far off the GeForce cards in terms of performance. The most popular AMD card on the market right now is the Radeon R9 Fury and is usually compared against the GeForce GTX 980ti. It has slightly less memory (4gb) and the size of the card is smaller also, so if space is an issue with your PC case, this could be the answer. The costs on the R9 Fury is around £590 depending on your choice of supplier. These cards are all high end graphic cards for the ultimate PC gaming experience - but if you just want to be able to play the latest games without the huge cost, my advice would be to purchase a GeForce 960 card which performs well at 1080p and will only set you back £170, plus it’s physically very small so will fit in most standard PC Towers but always check before purchasing.

Q.

How do I know if my PC or laptop is compatible with a Solid State Disk (SSD) and how can I upgrade, and is it worth it? David, Coity

A.

Hi David, Over the last couple of years, SSD have really come down in price and offer a great opportunity to speed up your PC/ Laptop boot times but it comes with some draw backs which might put some people off. SSDs come in smaller sizes than traditional magnetic hard drives counterparts. SSD can be an excellent upgrade to a laptop if you don’t need to store large amounts of data on the device. My currently laptop is around 4 years old and it originally had a 500gb magnetic hard disk and it took around 3 minutes to boot up into Windows 7 from a power off stage. Once I installed the 240Gb SSD disk, I would see load times in the region of 1 minute, which is great, but I was restricted to how much data I could keep on the laptop. This didn’t cause me any problems and made me carry out good housekeeping in terms of what data I would keep/delete. Installing the SSD was very straight forward, these days laptop hard drives are very accessible via the underneath of the laptop. The whole process took no longer than 10 minutes to swap out. Once you have swapped out the disk, you will need to install a fresh copy of Windows/Linux using the rebuild DVD media, which came with your computer when you bought it. If there is no DVD media, you will be able to download it from the Manufacturers website. Alternatively, some SSD come with disk cloning software which allows you to transfer all your data from Seaside News | 20

email: david@westprime.co.uk with your questions

your old hard disk over to the new SSD, one caveat on this is, if you have a 500Gb hard disk currently, you will need to make sure you don’t exceed the capacity of your new SSD. For example, if you have a 500gb drive and are currently using 380gb of data, you will need to ensure you SSD as a capacity of 400gb to ensure you have enough room for you existing plus new data. Or, you can delete all unwanted data (or copy off to a USB disk) from your existing laptop hard disk and get the size down to the bear minimum. If you are planning to upgrade your PC rather than your laptop, just ensure the SSD comes with a 3.5 mounting plate so it can fit inside your existing hard drive slots inside your PC case. If you want to go one step further and enjoy the fastest boot time, you can opt for PCI SSD cards, Ive seen PC’s boot up in 25 seconds using this technology but it’s a little bit more technical when installing and generally only work in PC Desktops.

Q.

Should I upgrade to Windows 10? Chloe, Ewenny

A.

Hi Chloe, You have probably been prompted by the Windows Update process to decide whether you would like to upgrade to Windows 10. For the most part, this is a seamless upgrade and once you agree to the terms and conditions, your machine will be upgrade via an automated process, which can take around 2hrs to complete. The benefits on Windows are varied but the one thing that everybody seems happy about is the fact the Start Button that disappeared in Windows 8 is now back, so it’s a lot easier to find your applications and navigate menu’s just like Windows 7. There are various security enhancements to the operating system to make it more secure against attack, but you will still need to employ an antivirus package. If you upgrade via the Windows Update process, the whole process is seamless and all the applications that are currently installed on your PC will work once the upgrade has taken place. Also, all your user data will be preserved, but I always advise to make a backup prior to starting the upgrade process. In short, Windows 10 is an exceptional upgrade to Windows 8 and it’s FREE.

News COMING TOGETHER TO END MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA Did you know that one in four people will experience mental health issues at some point in their lives? No one should be afraid to talk about mental health or feel unable to start the conversations that will help them get the support that they need. That’s why Bridgend County Borough, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea councils have joined the ABMU Health Board to launch the ‘Time To Change Wales’ pledge. Raising awareness and encouraging supportive, understanding attitudes to mental health is a key priority for health and social care service providers. The pledge demonstrates that each organisation recognises the importance of supporting both employees and people who are struggling with mental health issues, and is accompanied by detailed action plans, which outline what practical steps we are taking to promote mental health and wellbeing. These can include offering counselling services for staff as well as courses and events designed to reduce stress or enhance personal wellbeing. Mental health issues touch the lives of thousands of people across Bridgend County Borough and the Western Bay region, and it is important to help raise awareness and show support. To find out, more visit www.timetochangewales.org.uk or pick up a self-help guide from www.selfhelpguides.ntw.nhs.uk/abmu Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

COUNCIL PRESSES PLAY ON NEW YOUTUBE CHANNEL Most people have smartphones, tablets or computers these days, and social media is playing an increasingly important role in how people are interacting with their local council. Bridgend County Borough Council already has well-used Facebook and Twitter pages in place. With more than 10,000 followers, they have proven to be especially useful when we are consulting over things like the budget or the recent proposals for changing how we handle future waste. Now we have a brand new YouTube channel where we can share videos with you about council and community news as well as information on local events. The YouTube channel already features a library of short films that range from a sneak peek at plans to bring the Jennings Building back into public use to footage from last month’s annual Holocaust Memorial Day event. We’re hoping that the channel will strengthen the council’s growing social media presence and provide residents with a fresh perspective on latest events and developments. To subscribe, simply visit YouTube and search for ‘BridgendCBC’. You can also like the council at www.facebook.com/bridgendcbc or follow @BridgendCBC on Twitter. WHY THE SEASIDE IS SO IMPORTANT A NEW strategy to promote seaside resorts like Porthcawl and unlock their potential has been launched by Welsh Conservatives. Our aim is to boost small businesses in coastal resorts by extending business rate relief and improving access to finance. We also want to offer communities a right to bid for local assets like pubs that are important to the locality - this already happens in England. The council would also have to provide facilities to a minimum standard including toilets, disabled access and parking. Most importantly, we want to encourage organisations to apply for funding from the UK government’s Coastal Communities Fund, which the Welsh Government has dismally failed to promote. Many organisations will be unaware of its existence yet it could play a huge role in supporting projects that unlock the economic potential of our seaside. It is specially designed to help resorts became year-round destinations by supporting the tourism sector and sustaining the jobs within it. Porthcawl should be one of the places that benefits from the next round of funding. Lastly, we would abolish Visit Wales, which is embedded within Welsh Government, and replace it with an arms-length body to drive the tourist industry forward. GIVE YOUR BUSINESS IDEA A KICK-START If you are a budding entrepreneur with a great business idea, you might be interested in hearing about the ‘Kick-start’ grants, which are offered in partnership by Bridgend County Borough Council and UK Steel Enterprise. One local business that has swept to success with the help of a £1,000 grant is The Broomwagon Café in Porthcawl. The cycling-themed café, which gets its name from the vehicle that picks up stragglers at the back of a cycling race, opened in Station Hill recently. As well as serving teas, coffees, home-made cakes and light meals, the café also sells bike locks, track pumps, spare tubes and C02 canisters to help its customers get back to the peloton. As a keen leisure and commuting cyclist myself, I welcome this cafe’s contribution to the cycling scene. It is a fantastic feature of the newly regenerated Station Hill area and I’m pleased to see that it’s popular with non-cyclists too. The Broomwagon Café is another great example of why the KickStart Grant was put in place, giving start-up or new businesses a helping hand when developing their products and services. KAG GLASS SPLASHBACKS

A SORRY STATE OF AFFAIRS The First Minister has demanded an apology over fair criticism of his government’s record on health – but the First Minister must apologise to the people of Wales. In December, over 26,000 people were waiting more than 36 weeks for treatment. The target waiting time from time of referral in England is 18 weeks - in Wales it’s 32. This simply isn’t good enough. His government has had 17 years to get it right – they have failed. They have apologised for taking their ‘eye off the ball’ on education and apologised for short-changing the public in Labour’s great land sell-off. Now it is time for another apology - to every patient whose life is on hold waiting for an operation and to our superb staff who want to get on with the job but whose work is hindered by chronic mismanagement. Until the First Minister has the courage to acknowledge that his party has run out of ideas and now exists in a default state of denial, we will not get this. The question of an apology would of course be dealt with conclusively by a full-scale public inquiry – but that is something his government would never countenance. Wales deserves better. A Community Enterprise like ours is a bit like an iceberg – most of the work is below the surface, with many miles travelled for meetings with councils, bankers, funders and advisers. Our SeaQuest Coastal Science & Discovery events are one visible, interactive area of the project, with more events planned for March, including a talk on Whales, Dolphins and Porpoise at HiTide Inn, on 10th March at 7pm, and our Eggciting Easter Beach Discovery Hunt over the Easter holidays. Check our website for details: www.porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk It’s been an exciting time for the Harbourside team. We have recently issued tenders to: appoint company lawyers, instruct a blue chip project management company to manage the overall project and to appoint a design management team. We recently held an exhibition at The Y Centre, to liaise with the Porthcawl community and discuss our plans. We would like to thank everyone who came to see us, and for the fantastic encouragement and support from residents, Porthcawl Town Council, Civic Trust, Shout and Rotary. This has assisted us greatly in developing the proposals in final preparation for a full planning submission. The plans will be displayed at our next exhibition. Jayne Bowden

News BRITAIN’S FUTURE IN SPACE

WE NEED FAN ZONES FOR THE EUROS

With the recent mission to the International Space Station by British astronaut Tim Peake, Britain’s place in space has come to the fore of both the public and politicians minds. For some it is surprising to see that the UK even has a space role, despite the fact that between 2012 and 2013 the space industry contributed £5.1bn to UK GDP. Our current lack of launch facilities can be deceiving; the UK is heavily involved in all manner of space related projects. For example, the UK is taking the lead in developing the Mars rover for the European Space Agencies ‘ExoMars’ mission to Mars in 2018. Furthermore, the space industry represents a great opportunity for Britain in the future. The development of space planes could offer UK space industries a possible UK launch capability. There are plans to put a regulatory framework in place to facilitate the development of a working UK spaceport by 2018. The Space Innovation and Growth Strategy envisages a turnover of the UK space industry of £40bn by 2030. This represents a great opportunity for British business, but more importantly, this represents a great opportunity for budding scientists and engineers in the UK.

A recent debate in the National Assembly gave Plaid Cymru the opportunity to call on the Welsh Government to help establish fan zones across Wales for when the Euros are under way. What we are thinking of is something similar to the successful Cardiff Arms Park Fanzone during last year’s Rugby World Cup, which attracted more than 150,000 fans. This created a wonderful atmosphere and it was a huge success. Wales needs to build on that. Wales is taking part in the finals of a major football tournament for the first time since 1958, and the Welsh Government should be at the forefront of efforts to ensure as many fans can enjoy it as possible. I look forward to hearing the response from the minister, and any progress made so far. We believe that the Welsh Government needs to look at setting up fanzones not just in Cardiff, but in other areas of the country, such as Wrexham and Swansea – or anywhere there is a huge following for football. We need to bring the nation together.

PROPOSED PRIMARY CARE FACILITY AT PORTHCAWL A number of my Porthcawl constituents have been asking me about progress on the proposed Primary Care Centre for Porthcawl. Since representatives from ABMU HB held their Public Exhibition on the 12th November 2015 in the town, a planning application by LSP Developments Ltd was received by Bridgend Council on the 24th November 2015. With the application lodged at the Council, there has been extensive consultation carried out on the proposal. I know that opinion is divided on the proposed Primary Care Centre and that many of you will have made your own views known. Alongside Porthcawl residents’ views, Natural Resources Wales, South Wales Police and Welsh Water have also responded to the consultation. A decision had been expected on the 20th January 2016 but the Planning Officer has asked for additional information. Once the additional information has been received a report will then be put together for Members of the Planning Committee who will decide this application. It is hoped that the planning application will be discussed by the Committee as early as the end of March but it will depend on whether there are any outstanding queries on the proposal. PRINCESS OF WALES: STAFF DEMORALISED Since my selection as a candidate for Bridgend, I have spoken with many nurses who work at the Princess of Wales Hospital. One of the concerns that was raised with me is the significant gap between the pay of regular staff and the pay of agency staff. I was told that in some instances nurses employed via agencies receive more than twice the hourly rate of permanent nurses employed by the Hospital, despite being of the same grade and level of experience. Agency staff are also paid additional expenses for transport, food and accommodation if they don’t live in Bridgend. Furthermore, the agencies that arrange the contracts charge separate fees. The nurses confided to me that it is demoralising to see the work of other nurses valued much more than their own work, despite being of the same quality. Moreover, they feel that agency nurses are a drag during each shift because the temporary nurses are not familiar with the patients and their case history, and as a result significant time is spent bringing them up to speed. We should start thinking long term about our NHS and minimise the use of agency contracts. George Jabbour Welsh Conservative

FEATURES Y CEFN GWYRDD

PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB

It’s spring already and in Cefn, like so many other places, no one can make sense of the seasons! It only seems like last week that we were celebrating Christmas and the appearance of daffodils half way through that month! The Gwyrdd’s carol singing was a great success and the centre of the village contributed generously to Ty Hafan £240. Well it’s all been happening on the village. A planning application for six houses on Cot Green has been turned down thanks to the enthusiastic opposition of the villagers of the estate who obviously impressed the planning officer with their argument that the Green is of utmost importance to the area. The Gwyrdd has also contacted the Planning Department concerning development of the ambulance site. We are in favour of the development but have opposed the building of a six foot retaining wall and the positioning of five rotary clothes lines – overlooking the road - and on top of the bank which the Gwyrdd planted [see photo] with primroses and trees and which for thirty years we have tended. A meeting with the developer will hopefully see the removal of the lines and less of our primrose bank being removed. John Mason masoncj4@hotmail.com

We started back to the Porthcawl Stroke Club early just to just to see Layla perform. Layla is a young girl who is still in school at Porthcawl Comprehensive; whose talents are amazing! Not only does Layla sing with a voice of an angel, but plays the keyboard and clarinet as well. Layla comes from a very talented family, as her Father plays the guitar and sings also; her mother is often seen in many drama productions, as was her grandparents. A joint negotiation between The Porthcawl Stroke Club and the Princess of Wales Masonic Lodge Home; invited Layla and her dad to give their performance to residents of the home and Stroke club members. Both parties enjoyed the entertainment together in the main hall at the Masonic, which was a very successful venture. The individuals were all able to have pleasure and delight of watching Layla and her Dad perform. We wish this young lady every success in her future endeavors, as we are sure she will go far in life. Thank you Layla and Dad for lifting our spirits and making us go home in a cheerful mood. BRIDGEND ROTARY RAMBLERS AT ABERAVON This month’s walk, organised by Rotarian Hopkin Joseph, met on Wednesday 20th January at Remos Restaurant on the Aberavon seafront. It was one of the few bright, dry and clear days of recent months so that eight Rotarians and a dog set out to enjoy the coastline. The ramblers set off westwards, initially along the promenade, then dropping down across a rock sea wall to the beach, which is one of the longest beaches in the area. The objective was to walk to the River Neath about one and a half miles away. Encouraged by the clear day and the view of most of East Swansea and Mumbles on the skyline ahead the Rotarians reached the River Neath in approximately one hour. The tide was low so that the River Neath was easily navigated. The return journey offered a different vista of Port Talbot breakwater, docks and cranes ahead. All participants experienced an enjoyable few hours in rare sunshine and then returned to Remos for a welcome drink and snack. The next monthly ‘Rotary Ramble with Hopkin’ is scheduled for 17th February. Gill Hale gillianrhale@hotmail.co.uk Seaside News | 28

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hey folks, here is a snippet from my book ‘Uncaged!’ I thought you may be interested in. Uncaged can be ordered on www.neilchristianharvey.com I had a vision. On the cross, Jesus hung dying. He seemed immense and I felt very small as I gazed up at him. He looked back at me, His eyes full of love. In that moment, I saw agonizingly clearly all the bad stuff in me and I knew that He could see it, too. Deeply ashamed, I thought that Jesus might withdraw his love from me. He didn’t. Instead, His eyes pierced me with love. I felt ashamed that he could love me so much, when my love for Him was so weak. As I hung my head, I felt someone pouring some substance over my head and my whole being. It felt like pure love; I cannot describe it any other way. A famous preacher by the name of Charles Finney, who must have had a similar experience, called it ‘liquid love’. The revelation shook me to the core. I wept as, for a whole hour, Jesus continued to pour out his love upon me. Then, with a last reminder that His love would always be the same, the vision withdrew. I knew I would never be the same again. Neil Harvey

FEATURES SET YOUR SIGHTS ON A VOLUNTEER ROLE

Could you help a blind or partially sighted person to get out and about in Bridgend and Porthcawl - and boost your CV at the same time? Guide Dogs Cymru will be at Bridgend Recreation Centre on Friday 9th March, inviting people to train as sighted guides. The scheme, entitled My Guide, matches volunteers with people who are blind or partially sighted, to increase their mobility, confidence and independence. They take simple trips together, such as walking to the shops or a club. Identifying the right volunteer is vital, and care is taken to get the right match of personality and interests. Successful candidates receive specialist training in practical sighted guiding to enable them to form a successful, confident partnership. Steve Kersley, of Guide Dogs Cymru, said: “Volunteers say they get great satisfaction from helping a visually impaired person to become more mobile, and they learn new skills that they can apply in daily life. These transfer well to the workplace, and the qualifications can be added to a CV.” Would-be volunteers must be over 18. To find out more, visit Steve in the foyer of Bridgend Recreation Centre on 9th March between 11am-3pm. Alternatively, ring 07785 907728 or email Steve.Kersley@guidedogs.org.uk

THE NINTH PLANET In 1846, a French astronomer named Le Verrier worked out mathematically that another large planet was orbiting the Sun beyond the realms of Uranus, which had been discovered some 60 years previously. Soon afterwards, the planet Neptune was found exactly where Le Verrier said it would be. But the orbit of Neptune seemed to be affected by yet another planet farther out in the solar system. In 1930 the dwarf planet Pluto was found, yet it was far too small to have any effect on the orbits of other planets. Now astronomers have evidence of a giant planet having ten times the mass of Earth, orbiting the Sun at a distance of 20 times that of Neptune. This planet, tentatively called Planet Nine, takes between 10,000 and 20,000 years to complete one orbit, which is angled at 30 degrees to the other eight planets. It is undoubtedly the object which has been upsetting the orbits of Uranus and Neptune and proves that 19th century astronomers knew what they were talking about. Whoever is first to find it will be assured of a place in the history books for as long as humans exist. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT The Management Committee met recently to plan their fundraising diary for 2016. We plan to hold several events during the year, including social evenings, day trips, theatre trips, and a weekend trip in November, which takes us up to Christmas yet again! We are working on the final details and more information will be soon available. Easter is fast approaching, and we will be celebrating by having an Easter bonnet parade, with members attending lunch on Good Friday, in their hand-made bonnets, hoping to win an Easter egg or two. We have received many generous donations of late; we have started buying equipment for the new kitchen, to be named ‘Cegin Rees’ (Cegin is Welsh for kitchen!) We are only months away from completion – our cook Julie and her kitchen team are keen to move in. However our work will not be over when Cegin Rees is complete, because we intend renovating the current kitchen so that it can be used for birthday parties, seminars or weekly groups who look forward to a cuppa during their class. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH One of the first lessons taught at Sunday School is that God loves us all; although many of us will always struggle to comprehend exactly what that means. When I reflect on the times that I have most strongly felt God’s presence in my life, there is almost always another person associated with that experience. Whether it was a close friend, a relative, a stranger; God has usually used other people to communicate his unconditional love to me. Despite this, I still sometimes struggle to understand that level of love. It has no limitations and no requirements; it cannot be earned or lost, it simply is and will always be. That seems impossible to imagine, because there isn’t anything even close that we can compare it with. We can spend our whole lives waiting for our burning bush, but I think we are much better off seeking God in the love freely given by our friends, family, and strangers. I encourage you to search for signs of God’s love in the people you encounter today and to be open to experiencing the fullness of God. Despite every effort during the past 12 months, the institute has been unable to form a committee and therefore the decision was taken to suspend membership. Kenfig WI was established in 1932 and since that time has progressed as an energetic and successful group. Many lasting friendships have been formed and members have, through the years, engaged in numerous activities, functions and trips as well as contributing positively to the community. We take this opportunity of conveying our thanks to all past members, Local Council and friends in the community for their contribution and support in enabling our institute to thrive successfully. In addition we offer our good wishes for future success to our link institutes of Newton, Porthcawl and Sker. Finally, in hopeful anticipation, if anyone in the community feels able to commit to reforming the Institute please contact Glamorgan Federation of Women’s Institutes who will offer help an advice. Pam Redmond

NEWTON WI Our president, Pearl Mason, opened our February meeting. Lots of exciting news from Federation House on events planned for 2016. The speaker for the evening was Clare Revera, who spoke on ‘Working with Willows’. Clare is based in Ogmore by Sea - with workshops held at Ewenny. Willow is a very versatile material, sorced mainly from the Willow fields in Somerset. With Clare’s expert guidance we endeavoured to make a simple Bird Feeder with great concentration and much laughter, a small amount of success was achieved. It was a most enjoyable evening. Shrove Tuesday - our pancake morning - where as usual, lots of lovely pancakes expertly cooked by Shirley and Anna. The game of ‘Tossing the Pancake’ this year was won by Glenys Griffiths, with the wooden spoon going to Betty Metcalf. Our Craft Group were invited to take afternoon tea on Ward 18 POW as a thank you token from the staff for the WI’s kindness in making tactile craft items for help and comfort in their patients long term care. Well done ladies. For more information on Newton WI Please ring Pearl on 01656 772657. M Freeman

SKER WI – SUPPORTING ACWW On 8th February, members of Sker WI met up for the first charity event of 2016. The event was organised to raise funds to support Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW). ACWW is an international charity affiliated to the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI), the aim of which is to raise the standard of living of rural women and families through education, training and community development programmes. The NFWI supports the work of ACWW via fund raising and raising awareness of the charity. On the night, members and guests enjoyed an evening of fun Seaside News | 34

and music provided by local entertainment group ‘Golden Oldies’. There were also pancakes, tea and coffee during the interval. There was also a raffle and a sale of handmade greetings cards supplied by the craft group. ACWW representative, Novello Peters, thanked Sker WI for an enjoyable evening and gave thanks for their fund raising efforts. President Nora Williams brought the evening to a close and everyone agreed that it had been an enjoyable event in aid of a worthy cause. Christine Beynon

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI We recently held our February meeting in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill. We had a good turnout of members considering the weather. Vice president Christine chaired the meeting, with minutes read by Enid our secretary. The number of members is constant but new members always welcome and we will be pleased to see you. We are looking to book a day out in the summer to the WI’s Collage Denman, Several of our new members have not been there, myself included, and if we can arrange it, it should be very interesting. Our walking group had their first walk this month where we all braved the weather to Pink Bay and arrived back windswept but invigorated. WI business over, we were entertained by Mrs Joyce James whose topic was Nursery Rhymes. She opened our eyes to the meaning of them - they were not children’s little ditties as first thought, but were the satire of the time and some of the meanings were quite suprising. The talk was enlightening and next month’s speaker, Mrs Tipper, whose topic Magistrates Courts, will have a hard time following it, but I am sure she will rise to the challenge. Tea and biscuits all round, and once more a successful meeting. Christine Callaghan

LALESTON WI NEWS Vice President Barbara Rees took our February meeting. The minutes of our previous meeting were read and agreed. Barbara informed members that our President, Margaret Aylen, was doing well and has returned home to continue her recuperation. Future plans were announced for an educational trip to Llanelli House in April or May and a summer trip to Tyntesfield - a National Trust property near Bristol, in August. Our annual lunch will be at Blanco’s, Port Talbot on 8th March - further details at next month’s meeting. Barbara introduced our speaker Joyce James - who gave us a lovely talk on the life of Richard Burton. A vote of thanks was given by Christine Rees. The raffle was won by Bronwen Davies and the competition won by Christine Rees. The next meeting will be held on 3rd March at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). Our guest speaker will be Tom Phelps, who will read poems about Valley Life. Our competition will be ‘Welsh Memorabilia’. For further information call Diane on 01656 656600 DS Dawn Storie

An Advance Decision (also known as a Living Will) can be used by an individual to make sure that, if they lose capacity, they will not receive any medical treatment that they do not want. They can only be used once a person has lost capacity and copies should ideally be kept with your medical records so that your intentions are known to those who will care for you. Advance Decisions do not have to be written down, but placing your wishes in writing formalises your intentions. It is necessary to put your decisions in writing if they concern the refusal of life sustaining treatment. Life sustaining treatment is identified as treatment which replaces or supports bodily functions. Such treatments can include the issuing of antibiotics which would help your body fight off infection. For an Advance Decision to be legally binding the following must be apparent: - You are aged 18 and over and have capacity; - It is clear which treatments you wish to refuse; - You explain the circumstances in which you wish to refuse them; - The document is signed by you and witnessed if the decisions contain refusal of life sustaining treatment; - You have not been harassed into making these decisions; and - Nothing has been done by you that contradicts the Advance Decision since it was made. Healthcare professionals must follow Advance Decisions so long as the Advance Decision is valid and applicable. To be valid it must follow the points mentioned above; to be applicable, Doctors must consider whether any medical developments have been made since the Advance Decision was made and should act in your best interests. You should also review your Advance Decision frequently. If you determine that no changes are necessary, you should sign and date your Advance Decision to confirm to any healthcare professional that you are up to speed with any medical developments that might invalidate your wishes. It should also be noted that an Advance Decision can be amended or revoked at any time. Another point to note is the introduction of the Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney (LPAHW). If you have created a LPAHW since your Advance Decision then the LPAHW will revoke your Advance Decision so you may wish to complete a new one. For further advice on Advance Decisions or other matters relating to your personal affairs please contact the Estates and Trusts Team.

Finance MORTGAGES FOR THE OVER-55S

TAX YEAR END

A huge amount has been written recently about the issues facing the older mortgage borrower, as the issue of a huge number of interest-only mortgages which are due for redemption commences and takes hold. The industry regulator, The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) itself estimates that around 600,000 of these mortgages are due for redemption between now and 2017. This hard statistic leaves all the borrowers involved, a stark choice on how they repay the capital that is owing to the lender in question. They can either sell up and down-size, somehow borrow the money from another source (family, etc) or they can seek help whereby such borrowing can be available from a lender that has facilities for older lenders. On this last option, one thing is for sure – the high street will simply not offer the solution. Speaking with an experienced, whole of market specialist is the key to finding the answer, since the independent Adviser will know all those lenders that are able to lend to the older age group and help you find whatever solution fits you best. There ARE lenders that welcome older borrowers, however they all differ in what they offer and this is where your ‘later life’ specialist comes into his or her own. They spend a great amount of their professional time, dealing with primarily older clients and will know what is on offer from this sector of the market. There ARE still options to continue on an interest-only basis or to convert to a repayment basis, albeit over a longer term; or even to use a scheme where the lender will finance the transaction now with various options regarding how the capital is eventually repaid. If you are at all affected or concerned that you do not have the capital to repay the mortgage or you don’t know who to speak with, please give us a call and we can help guide you in the right direction. DO NOT bury your head in the sand, as the problem will not go away. DO talk to someone who really could be in a position to help you. Call now on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 – you really could be glad you made the call.

As the tax year-end approaches people run to ensure that they have maximised their ISA allowances. ISA’s are always part of mainstream investment planning but should you limit your spectrum to ISA’s and ISA’s alone? As a Chartered Firm of Independent Financial Advisers we look beyond the use of ISA’s. Whilst ISA’s provide you with Tax Free Growth they offer no tax relief on entry. There are alternative end of tax year considerations where you can not only shelter ongoing growth from tax but also reclaim tax that you have paid not only in the current tax year 15/16, but also from the previous tax year 2014/2015. For those who have recently completed and paid a substantial tax bill, with a further liability due on July, this time of year is an ideal opportunity to carefully plan your financial affairs. It must also be remembered that whilst ISA’s do provide tax free growth they are still the subject of Inheritance Tax upon death, whilst other alternatives provide tax relief, tax free growth and are exempt from Inheritance after a period of two years. All consultations are free of charge and we will not charge you any fees if you are not in agreement that our proposals add value to your ongoing financial affairs.

BIRDWATCH: HOUSE MARTINS

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. House Martins arrive to breed in April/May, having migrated from Africa. You may see them gathering mud on the ground to build or repair their nest (often built under the eaves of a house), which takes around ten days to complete and is made up of between 700 and 1,500 individual mud pellets. In flight look out for a blueblack back, and a white rump and underside; the forked tail is short and lacks a Swallow’s streamers. There has been a steady long-term decline, so please do not prevent them nesting on your house. Starting next month, the BTO is running a survey to examine the timing of nesting, number of nesting attempts and the behaviour of breeding House Martins. If House Martins nest on your home, or you could easily and regularly view a nest elsewhere, please help with this special survey. To register your interest and more information, please visit http://www.bto.org/ volunteer-surveys/house-martin-survey. Alternatively you can contact the BTO directly (01842 750050 or info@bto.org). March is the beginning of the busy season in the garden, the job list lengthening along with the daylight! Now that spring has arrived, with the weather hopefully a bit milder, the slugs have arrived with it! They love the lush new growth and tender new shoots, so zap them when you can (it’s funny, snails are only slugs with houses on their backs but somehow seems a lot nicer!) It’s time to start cutting the lawn again (oh joy!) Keep the blades high for the first few cuts, and don’t leave the clippings on the lawn so that the air and rain can penetrate the turf. It’s a good idea to cover intended seed beds in plastic to increase the temperature of the soil; as soon as it reaches 6C you can plant seeds directly outside. Sweet peas and broad beans can be sown first. Did you know - Up to 49% of the world’s bluebells grow in the UK, but completely absent from the Orkney and Shetland Isles! Folklore says that if you can turn a bluebell flower inside out without tearing it you will eventually win the one you love (watch out George Clooney – I’m practising!). Happy Gardening! Chris Early

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR GARDEN We have probably all been noticing our gardens more over the last few weeks as we get the occasional sunny day and thoughts may have lead us to how to we want the garden to look this year? This could be anything from a tidy up to a complete overhaul of the garden with new landscaping features and redesign. There are so many options available to suit every garden type, aspect and size so its worth seeking the advice of a professional to understand what your garden can offer you. This may be anything from a low maintenance garden with little future input required, a wildlife friendly garden or a contemporary space for the whole family. Ecogreen can help you with these decisions and provides a complete design and build service. We are City & Guilds qualified and are a professional member of The Chartered Institute of Horticulture. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB Planting can begin when conditions improve. If you don’t have rhubarb in your garden give it a try. Rhubarb like a well-drained site and they are heavy-feeders, they like a compost mix, with rotted manure. Insects and diseases won’t bother rhubarb plants as long as you keep them weed free. Rhubarb is a perennial vegetable, though it is generally used as a fruit in desserts and jams. You only eat the stalks, which have a rich tart flavour. The leaves of this plant are poisonous, so be sure that they are not ingested. Rhubarb is easy to grow, but needs cool weather to thrive. Rhubarb, originally known as Rhacoma root, was brought to Europe from Asia by Marco Polo in the 13th century. At the club, the newly renovated store shed/ members shop, opened on 30th January. Everything is now on the flat, no more steep stairs to climb! We will have an official opening on 5th March where members will have FREE cakes and coffee, as a thank you for all the fundraising, raffles, and general support shown during this past year. Next lecture March 14th: A Gardening Miscellany Chris Gwilym. Gwen Bradford

Health IN GOOD HANDS AT THE NUFFIELD Many conditions can affect our hands, wrists and elbows. A Welsh Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon working with Nuffield Health Cardiff & Vale Hospitals, Mr Andrew Rogers, provides a very safe pair of hands to treat these ailments. Between his NHS and private practice, Mr Rogers treats over 1500 patients every year with a variety of elbow, hand and wrist conditions. One of these, where the fingers become bent, called Dupuytren’s disease, now has a nonsurgical option which may be suitable for 30-40% of patients. The recently developed treatment uses a powerful enzyme collagenase to weaken the cords that are bending the fingers, then the fingers are manipulated straight 24 hours later under local anaesthetic. This can be a good option for less severe cases and where people prefer not to have surgery. In the elbow, he treats degenerative conditions such as golfers and tennis elbow and osteoarthritis, plus fractures, dislocations and ligament injuries. Mr Rogers comments, “The age range of my patients can vary from very young children to the elderly patients into the 90’s. Each group has their own goals but perhaps the most demanding are the professional/ international athletes who require a rapid return to sport following their injuries.” Sarah Hussain Photo: Specialist Hand Surgeon Mr Andrew Rogers at Nuffield Health Cardiff & Vale Hospitals

THICKENED NAILS Thickened nails, a common nail condition, can cause the nails to become unsightly, discoloured, crumbly and often very difficult to cut. Many do not seek professional advice as they become embarrassed about their appearance. COMMON CAUSES Fungal Nail - A fungal nail infection is one of the most common causes of thickened nails. This can often be detected by the nail turning a yellow or brown colour before it begins to thicken. Ill-fitting Footwear - Major trauma to the nail can be caused by repetitive, long-term pressure from shoes that are either too small or too narrow over the toes. Psoriasis - People suffering with this long-term condition are also prone to nail psoriasis. This has similar effects where the nail can become pitted and discoloured. TREATMENTS Effective treatment for thickened nails is dependent on the underlying cause. * Ensure that nails are cut and filed regularly, carefully reducing the thickness of the nail. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself, contact a Foot Health Professional. * Reduce further pressure by replacing ill-fitting footwear. * Seek treatment for fungal nail infections from your GP or Foot Health Professional. BONIROB – A SUBSTITUTE FOR HERBICIDES? Bosch has developed a weedkilling robot called BoniRob! It is able to learn what weeds look like and quickly navigate through fields stamping down smaller weeds and getting rid of the larger ones. This new development could end the need for herbicide use, eliminating the dangers of herbicide toxicity. The world’s number one herbicide is Monsanto’s Roundup, which is sprayed liberally on most GM crops and even some non-GM crops such as cereals, oilseed rape, sunflowers and many more, contains glyphosate. This is a highly toxic chemical and has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a “possible carcinogen”. It is also know to have a toxic affect on mammal hearts and is not something everyone feels comfortable being used in the food chain. The BoniRob is already being tested on farms and although there are some improvements still to be made this really could be the future of farming without the use of dangerous herbicides such as Roundup. LOOKING AFTER YOUR DENTURES & MOUTH Here at Denture Design Centre we are aware that many people are incorrectly looking after their dentures. In most cases this is not the fault of the patient but the lack of information supplied to them. Here are a few tips to help: Cleaning - We always advise cleaning dentures with denture cream and a soft brush, not abrasive toothpaste that can scratch and damage the dentures. We never recommend soaking dentures in solutions that contain bleach, as this can discolour and weaken them. Brushing - This should be done whether you have all your teeth or none. Brushing your gums will increase blood supply to them, keeping them healthy and allowing your dentures to fit for longer. Removing dentures at night - This is advised but not always possible. If it’s uncomfortable leave them in. If removed, place in a glass of water. Regular Check-ups - These are still important even if you have no teeth, to make sure your gums stay healthy. This can be done with us. If you still have remaining teeth you will need to see a dentist. Repairs - Never try to repair them yourself. Take them to a dental technician or dentist to be repaired. For more information visit: www.denturedesigncentre.co.uk Or call us on 01656 767806 Matthew Thomas

Arts BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR UPDATE

After entertaining a sell-out Principality Stadium at the Wales v France Six Nations Rugby Match, choristers of the Bridgend Male Choir now celebrate the launch of its latest CD, “# Sounds Like’ on St David’s Day. The first CD release since, ‘Classic Male’ six years ago, the new content represents much of the Choir’s current repertoire. There is great variety with songs from opera, stage, popular hymns & test pieces from its Llangollen Eisteddfod success showing the Choir’s versatility. The CD can be purchased at Porters Estate Agents, Nolton Street, Bridgend, from any chorister, or the Choir’s website www.bridgendmalechoir.co.uk at a cost of £8.99. It will also be available at all Choir engagements, the next of which is at 7pm on Friday 11th March. This is the occasion of the St John’s Trust ‘Three Choirs Concert’, raising much needed funds for its restoration & preservation work at its Newcastle Hill base. Joining BMC at St Mary’s Catholic Church on Ewenny Road will be the high quality singers of Pontyclun based, Vocelle Ladies, plus the Children’s Choir of Oldcastle School, which will have a few topical surprises. COR BRO OGWR - MAINLY MOZART Our Spring concert this year celebrates some of the best known Mozart works. The Requiem Mass, left uncompleted at his death in 1791and then finished by one of his students, Franz Sussmayer, is a favourite with choirs and audiences alike. Four soloists and an orchestra join the choir in giving the work the fullness it calls for. Two more favourites follow; Laudate Dominum and Ave Verum Corpus. Finally, a change of pace as we sing Haydn’s Te Deum, a gallop of music that leaves every choir breathless by the end. Youtube has a version getting through it in 8 minutes 6 seconds....we haven’t timed ourselves yet! The concert will take place in All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl, at 7pm ( note early start ) on Saturday April 9th. Tickets £10 at the door or tel. 01656 653326 website cor-bro-ogwr.com Dominique Spearey

THE ACOUSTIC CLUB @ THE STAGE DOOR We kick off this year’s events on Wednesday 16th March at 8pm with the fabulous Woody Pines with his down home swing from the back roads of America. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for supporting us, and helping to keep music live. Looking forward to seeing you there. Lin Williams

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I’m really glad to see the back of the last couple of months, what with the bad weather and the deaths of some of our top rock stars! However, it was good to meet up with my long-time song-writing partner Daley B Williams. Dale was in Wales doing a few solo shows. There’s been a lot of speculation on social media over the years that our friendship is akin to the Gallagher brothers’ dislike for each other, but we’ve always been close mates! I know Dale would like to get Secret Army back on tour but with him living in the Czech Republic and Ryan, our original drummer, gigging all over the world, it sadly won’t happen. The Seagull (Rest Bay) is having music once a month on a Saturday, featuring the best local bands including The Guzzards, Side Effects, Lounge Lizards and Cover Sluts. Well done, Nicky! Top DJ and drummer Jamie Paul is in action every Thursday at The Bay in Porthcawl – go and check it out, he’s an under-rated talent and a clever and funny guy behind the mike! If you have any music news, or want your CD reviewed, call me on the bat phone! Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Top musician Dale B Williams

Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Recent news about job losses at the steelworks in Port Talbot, and fears for its long-term future, made me think about the time in 1998 that I was shooting my local history film ‘A History of Port Talbot’ and was given an opportunity to film in various parts of the works, which was then owned by Corus. Accompanied by the head of public relations, I set my camera up by the blast furnaces, coke ovens and deepwater harbour where iron ore was being discharged from a large ore-carrier, and we went up on one of the cranes to get a shot looking down into the ship’s hold. We squeezed ourselves, and my camera gear, into a tiny lift and next thing we were edging our way along a narrow walkway on the arm of the crane, which was frankly a terrifying experience. Having got the camera into position and carefully lined up the shot, I switched the motor on and… the camera jammed! It’s something that rarely happens, but it had to happen there! All the other scenes came out perfectly, and now I realise how important it is to photograph things that we take for granted. They won’t be there forever. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir with Eclair camera (the one that jammed!)

POEMS AFON CARIAD Within the spa of friendship lies, A constant well of fresh supplies. To feel the healing of its flow, We must jump in - we must let go. Through turbulence of youthful force, As we, like salmon, leap the course. Ferocious tides catalyse links, As thirsty, adolescence drinks. Immersed - the only way to see, We’re all joined up by tributary. Torrential surge of hopes and dreams; A mighty river from the streams. Cascading onwards, now, we sea, The Ocean’s quiet dignity. Reflect still waters of the deep; Our story told, eternal sleep. Will Edwards, Porthcawl

MEMORIES Let’s take a stroll down memory lane Like a trip to the seaside on a coal fired train, The black faced miners walking down the street With hob nailed boots upon their feet, Their clothing dirty and full of grime They came from working down the mine, The coal laden trucks travel down the line With coal that’s been taken from the mine, Our shopping was done at the local store John Bull, Home and Colonial and many more, The delivery boy employed at the store Brought all you purchased to your door, The local baker delivered your bread It was so nice it must be said, The milkman left your milk at your door The milk was fresh you can be sure, The butcher shop supplied your meat When it was cooked it was a treat, No fitted carpets covered your floor A coconut mat and a few bits more, The warmth of your house was seconds rate Heated from a coal fire in a black leaded grate, To keep your house so spic and span We used a mop a brush and a big dust pan, The flag stone floors were cleaned with soap hot water and a scrubbing brush To get them clean you did not rush, These memories are old and long gone past These modern times must surely last. Basil Walters, Cefn Glas, Bridgend

FOX, MAGPIE AND OH WHAT A TERN

WHO CARES FOR THE CARER?

I met a fox in Merthyr Mawr who sat with me a while and Said to me, “It’s ironic that we foxes who forage in bins get bad Press. Yet you humans drop rubbish with no guilty conscience And make more of a mess”.

Who cares for the carer? Is the question that I ask; Who is helping them help another with their overwhelming task Who is trying to ensure they remain healthy, fit and strong As they nurse and feed the one in need all day and all night long?

A magpie on flight overheard this litter debate and chirped in With, “It’s ironic that we magpies collect what you drop and you Call it stealing so tomorrow I’ll send your Council the bill for rubbish collection and bear no hard feelings”. Another bird arrived who echoed this claim, as the bird Flew off I noticed it was a tern. And on reflection they all were right We humans do fail to learn.

Who worries about the carer? Is my other great concern; If they should fall to sickness where would the needy turn? The one they love is the one they want and on whom they depend To wash and feed and dress them and to be with them to the end

Alun Davies, Porthcawl

Who would care for the needy? Is the fact we have to face; If something happened to the carer, then who would replace That committed and devoted, caring loving soul Who gave their all without complaint in a hard and stressful role.

YOUR BODY STARTS TO ACHE NOW When you wake up in the morning, And you are feeling really cold, Your bones and joints are making noises, So you are feeling really old. Your body starts to ache now, It has been doing that a lot, Then you begin to wonder, What health problems you really got. Your feet, your legs, your knees, Your arms, your elbows and your shoulders, All start to show signs of wear, Now you are getting older. Many problems are inherited, And planted in your genes, Showing themselves later in life, When they will clearly be seen. David Boyce, Brackla, Bridgend

Who thinks about the carer? Is the thought that comes to me; When all thought is for the needy and that’s the way it ought to be But just a little bit of thoughtfulness would not go astray For the one who works and struggles without a thought for pay.

But we know who will care for the carer When their mortal coil is through When all their earthly labours get the recognition that is due When at last they can rest eternal with no further demands In peace and joy and secure in the Greatest Carer’s hands. John Weaver, Brackla, Bridgend

GOLDEN

Rising happy now the sun Starts the day and has some fun, This way and that he glides and shines Golden rays upon golden tides, One by one the children play While all the Palm trees start to sway, All the naughty seagulls stealing chips From all the children on school trips, The lighthouse man who’s not at work He’s sitting down with a golden smirk, All the golden boats Bob up and down Whilst everybody is laughing in this seaside town. Anna Muckell (aged 10), Bridgend

POEMS LAST NIGHT

THE CROSS

RELEVENCE?

Last night I walked with the moon, It was cold in the midnight air, Me and Him, we roamed the empty streets, We made a perfect pair

Here we join in adoration at the cross Come from every tongue and nation to the cross Faces lifted to the One Who sin and death has overcome So we pray, ‘Your kingdom come’ Through the cross

There are more than two hundred bones in our bodies, Some are big and some are quite small, The big ones don’t trouble us too much, The small ones often give us a call. Gout can be very painful Mostly affecting our fingers and toes But there are other small bits around the place That sit in your mouth in neat rows. Your teeth, of course, are all shiny and white And if healthy give no trouble at all, But who knows what’s happening deep inside, Do you need to give your dentist a call? The outcome depends on the work that was done, Was your dentist good, bad or just so? Did it cost about the same as a second hand car? Did you need a mortgage before you could go? Canals should be kept for beauty and boats And not holes we drill into our teeth. So keep brushing and polishing the tops everyday To ensure there’s no problem beneath.

Last night I walked with the moon, Snowflakes falling on my head, It was such a magical night But I woke up in my bed. I realised last night I didn’t walk with the moon, It was all just a dream, But somehow when I woke up, I was holding a moonbeam. I’m still waiting for the truth to be told, And I’ll remember him up there, I wonder if it will happen again? But I’m not sure when or where. Isabelle Hone (age 12), Porthcawl

From condemnation we’re delivered by the cross Know the chains that bound us severed at the cross Through Your suffering we are come To acknowledge Christ, God’s Son And we pray your kingdom come Through the cross ‘tis to us that God has spoken through the cross He has given us this token of the cross So we lift one voice in praise Own you Lord through all our days Know we’re brought into your kingdom Through the cross Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

Sport TAI CHI NEWS There are two branches of Sun Style Martial arts. The three ‘Classical’ arts of the originator Sun Lutang and preserved by his daughter the late Sun Jian Yun, and the ‘Traditional’ arts based on the original style but devised later by non Sun family people. In the UK the newer ‘Traditional’ Sun style arts are taught by the Faye and Tary Yip organisation in Wolverhampton. My original Classical Sun Style mentor was David Martin of Leicester, who was a lineage holder taught by Sun Jian Yun. Unfortunately he retired from teaching with ill health. His wife has carried on teaching instead of him, but as she did not train long with Sun Jian Yun, I understand she is not a holder of Sun Jian Yun’s lineage like her husband, so does not appear in the lineage book with him. My mentor now is Mr Nyfelt from Stockholm (photograph). He trained ten years with Sun Jian Yun and is her lineage holder, but he has mastered much more of the style than my previous tutor who could not teach all three of the Sun Style arts. Mr Nyfelt had the advantage of being fluent in Chinese during his 10 year study with Madam Sun, so learned all three arts in great depth. His expertise is thus much more than just Sun Style Tai Chi. Mr Nyfelt is coming to Porthcawl in late March to teach Tai Chi and application of historic ‘Tai Chi Classics’ at a Week End Workshop, hosted by your local Swimming Dragon School, of which he is the Principal. PORTHCAWL RUNNERS NEWS February is usually the month where runners resolve is fully tested - with the honeymoon period of New Year Resolutions over, and the lure of the bar for Six Nations games coupled with our wet, windy climate it’s now you see the benefit of a running club in keeping you motivated. We have members with lots of different goals - the walkers are pushing on towards the picturesque Vale Coastal Ultra in April; some runners are enjoying the mud and sand of cross country in the West Glam League; Parkrun remains a focus for many; some are building for St David’s 10k; some runners are building towards the World Half Marathon in Cardiff in March and some looking further ahead to Spring Marathons, with four focused on London at the end of April. Building on the fun we have had competing as a team in the West Glam Cross Country League, with a recent fixture in the mud at Margam Park; we are looking to put together relay teams for events in the summer such as the Rack Raids (a day long, thirteen stage relay, around the best castles and watering holes of Gwent). Focus in these events is on socialising and camaraderie with other teams. So, with plenty going on if you want to get involved, you are always welcome at Porthcawl Rugby Club 6.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Will Edwards, Assistant Coach

REST BAY MASTERS

The end of January saw Rest Bay SLSC once again taking part in the Welsh Stillwater Championships held at Cardiff International Pool. This time it was our Junior and Master teams competing, with 20 clubs taking part over two full days. Competitors took part in both individual and team events. After a small team entered in 2015, there has been overwhelming interest in the Masters section. This continuing growth has meant that this year we were able to go with a 15 strong team of which members ages range from 30-50+ years. It was a fantastic event with a great atmosphere between all club and competitors. The team put in 100% and we had fantastic results on both days. With these results and the combination of points the club were awarded with a win, naming the Masters section as Welsh Stillwater Champions 2016. A result that is even more outstanding when you take into consideration that for most of the competitors it was their first competition. One of our members didn’t even own a pair of goggles! This is an outstanding achievement, and the club is immensely proud of their commitment and determination. Not in this photorgraph, Steve Horn, Rhys Gronow and Keith Osborne. Stephen Taylor on behalf of Rest Bay SLSC Masters
