Blind Cyclist Raising Cash For Guide Dogs Tommie’s Trek Cymru Dear Editor, Dear Editor, A blind cyclist is embarking on the ride of his life to raise cash for Guide Dogs Cymru. Keith Barrett, owner of guide dog Lena, will cycle a tandem from Paris to Swansea this July with Andy Harries, a fellow member of the Ogmore Valley Wheelers. The ride starts at the Eiffel Tower and covers 320 miles in four days. Keith, a piano tuner from Corntown, said: “I used to be quite serious about cycling in my youth, but took a break for 20 years due to family, children and a lack of front riders.” “This event is not just about the distance, but the terrain. Cycling 40 miles over hills is as tiring as 100 miles on the flat. I have complete respect for Andy, who is used to doing long mileage and trains for triathlon most days.” Andy, who works in a pharmacy, said: “I’m glad to be doing this for Guide Dogs, as they bring so many benefits and yet receive no government funding. When I’m piloting the tandem, I try to describe what is ahead as we go along, but it’s between gasps because Keith pushes hard! We’ll take care on French roundabouts.” To sponsor, email keith@barrettpianos.co.uk Deborah Rees Communications Officer Guide Dogs Cymru

On 28th August 2014, the day after his second birthday, Thomas ‘Tommie’ Smith was diagnosed with a malignant tumour. He underwent six rounds of intense chemotheraphy at the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital, Cardiff and a major spinal operation at Bristol’s Children’s Hospital. Throughout his treatment Tommie and his family received invaluable support from LATCH, the Welsh children’s cancer charity. LATCH provided a variety of services during this difficult time, from temporary accommodation at the hospital, to social workers and support workers to help with financial and practical assistance. LATCH also supplies the Paediatric Oncology ward with essential medical equipment. In return we’d like to raise money for LATCH so other families can benefit from similar support, help and advice. Friend and neighbour, Deb Goule has volunteered to help raise money for LATCH in Tommie’s name. During ‘Tommie’s Trek’ Deb will cycle 364 miles and climb 9397ft up Snowdonia, Cader idris and Pen-y-Fan from 23rd to 25th May 2015. Those wishing to donate money can either use a JustGiving page ‘Tommie’s Trek’’, or an open Facebook group under the same name. We have already received donations of £1695, but would like to raise a lot more for this amazing charity. Sue Smith

Letters Refreshing Porthcawl Dear Editor, More pictures you might care to use, showing Porthcawl clean white and blue waiting to refresh the visitors. That brings a thought to mind – how about taking a leaf out of the West Country book. Recently I’ve visited the other side of the estuary and note palms – suggesting a climate warmer than it is. Driving down from the Nottage roundabout to the Portway I note that the land between the carriage ways would benefit from exactly that same image, a few Palm trees at that end would suggest to visitors that they’re entering a holiday town and if we are thinking of an entrance I note that the verges on both sides of the road are broad enough to take a few Forsythia, which in April would give a great sense of colour, gleaming yellow does suggest sunshine. I wonder what your readers would think of that. Just some ideas… Keith Thomas, Porthcawl

Marie Curie Blooming Great Tea Party

Dear Editor, Everyone living with a terminal illness should have access to high quality care and support. Marie Curie want people to be able to get the most from the time they have left. The charity is for those with any terminal illness and their families. Over 140 Marie Curie Nurses work in Wales, caring for around 2,300 terminally ill people in their homes each year. They work night and day, providing hands-on care and vital emotional support. The Hospice in Penarth provides specialist round-theclock care plus outpatient services. Marie Curie also provides practical information and guidance, support from trained volunteers and leads medical research at their Palliative Care Research Centre in Cardiff. Night In For Macmillan Dear Editior, I am writing to ask your readers to have a Night In for Macmillan this May. Macmillan’s Night In is simply about having friends round for a catch up, a laugh and something to eat and drink. There’s no 2am taxi to find and no queue at the bar – instead Macmillan wants you to enjoy some quality time in with your favourite people. Last year, our supporters across the UK raised an amazing £2m by hosting a Night In. This year, we’re appealing for people across Wales to sign up to host their own Night In and help us to raise even more to support people affected by cancer. Night In is a fun, hassle-free way to help raise money for Macmillan and ensure no one faces cancer alone. It’s simple to arrange and, best of all, you get to have a good time with friends while supporting Macmillan. We’ll even make sure you get a Night In kit to get the night off to a great start. There are a million reasons for a Night In this May. To make a difference, simply register your interest at http://nightin.org. uk, wait for your free Night In kit and ask your friends to donate whatever they can afford to your Night In. For information or support from Macmillan, call us free on 0808 808 00 00 (Monday to Friday, 9am–8pm) or visit macmillan.org. uk. SCHOOLS Porthcawl Comprehensive School Lavender Walk

Recently, 120 Porthcawl Comprehensive pupils and staff completed a walk from Candleston, near Merthyr Mawr to the Prince of Wales at Ton Kenfig raising funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK. The walk was organised by Assistant Head Boy Richard Price and his fellow Head Team members. Sadly, Richard recently lost his mother, Sian Smith to the disease after a very brave fight. He called it the “Lavender Walk” because it was her favourite flower, her favourite colour and also because of its strong connotations with the charity Pancreatic Cancer UK. About 100 pupils supported their friend, walking with him the 10-12 miles, collecting money as they went. They were joined by many teachers, staff and friends who also wanted to show their support. Walkers briefly stopped for refreshments kindly provided at the Hi-Tide and continued along the coast and on to the Prince of Wales. Here, as well as being treated to an extremely warm welcome, the group were rewarded with an abundance of sandwiches which everyone was more than ready for! PD Travel from Pyle even donated their fare - which was incredibly charitable of them. The “Lavender Walk” raised over £1600 for Pancreatic Cancer UK and funds are still coming in. Thank you to everyone who donated so generously! Andrew Slade Head Teacher

Cynffig Comprehensive News Hello again. The run-up to the Easter holidays proved to be as action-packed as ever. The Grand Final of Cynffig’s Got Talent once again played to an audience of proud parents and families, and showcased the sheer diversity of what our students can do. It revealed, too, new musical stars in winner Katelyn Evans and runner-up Callum Kinsey, whose voices amazed judges and audience alike, and a simply extraordinary gymnast in Emily Seyerle. Their talents will surely see them lead school concerts and sporting events for some years to come. Of course, we are a school that is determined to be the best at everything we undertake. Anyone who imagines that the Easter holidays might be a time of rest would be amazed at the academic work, which continued during those two weeks. Our teachers, as always, demonstrated the tremendous dedication and willingness to support students, which is so often commented on by pupils, parents and visitors. They were here, day after day, running revision sessions, providing resources and even through their holidays continuing to demonstrate their belief in our young people. To them, and to the Year 11, 12 and 13 students who worked with them – thank you. Hannah Castle Head Teacher Tel: 01656 740294

Guide Dog Puppy Visits Nottage Brownies

Pil Primary News Year 2 pupils took part in a Mock Wedding celebration on Wednesday 25th March at Pisgah Chapel. This was part of their topic work on Happiness. They took an active role in planning the day from the Chapel service to the reception in the school hall. They sang hymns, recited a love poem, gave speeches and performed a class first dance to Uptown Funk. A big thank you to Reverend Grabham, Singleton Executive cars and Wedding Belles for their support and contribution. It was a truly memorable event for both pupils and parents. A Haimes Deputy Head Teacher Seaside News | 12

Guide Dog Puppy Yaron, together with puppy walker Norah Clarke, visited the Brownies group in Nottage to meet the children who are taking part in their animal care badge. It was obvious everyone enjoyed the visit and Yaron loved all the attention he got. Since the visit Brownies decided to take part in fundraising events with proceeds going to Guide Dogs. The Brownies took part in various chores around their homes, which included: cleaning cars, baking, tidying around the house, washing up and planting seeds. Norah and Yaron returned to Nottage Brownies recently to accept a cheque for £63.10. If you are interested in becoming a Brownie, Nottage Brownies meet every Monday night at St Davids Church Hall in Nottage Village at 6.15pm. If you would like to become a volunteer with Guide Dogs please contact Norah on 01656 786018. Nora Page Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

SCHOOLS Brynteg Comprehensive School News

Porthcawl Primary News

This year Brynteg had two Year 12 EESW (Engineering Education Scheme Wales) teams working with Spectrum Technologies. Recently, both groups attended the Celtic Manor for the 25th Anniversary of the EESW coinciding with the 25th year of Brynteg’s involvement in the scheme. The successful teams were excellent ambassadors for the school and were highly commended by both Carwyn Jones and Julie Williams CBE (Chief Scientific Advisor for Wales) and their hard work paid dividends when the girls’ team was awarded ‘Best presentation of the Chosen solution’ (sponsored by RWE). The boys team were awarded the ‘Best Engineering Design’ (sponsored by Murco). Each prize was worth £500 with each pupil receiving £50 each. The school was also awarded a ‘Gold’ certificate recognising Brynteg’s commitment to the scheme. 40 students attended the ‘Science in Health’ live event in Cardiff University. All found the visit informative and helped some students decide on possible future career paths. Another 700 pupils entered a global chemistry online competition. The pupils were very enthusiastic and highly competitive. The Senior Netball team won this year’s President’s Cup and the Year 9 Rugby 7’s were crowned 2015 Bishopston 7’s Cup Champions. More rugby results next issue. Pam Doster

The sun is shining and the summer term is finally here! We have lots of exciting events to look forward to this term. Firstly we are really happy to be once again involved in the ‘Smile’ project. The project is run by Bridgend College and this year’s theme is linked to our school motto ‘Believing is achieving’. We have already written and recorded our song and are in the middle of writing the script for our film. We hope to repeat last year’s success which saw our song ‘Bee Generation’ made into a single! We also have started auditions and rehearsals for our end of year production. We have a lot to live up to after the incredible performances of the last few years so we are starting early! Finally we would like to congratulate our Formula 1 in schools team. The team did an incredible job and impressed many people with their presentations, pit lane display and portfolio. Even the First Minister Carwyn Jones AM spent time looking through our display! This year we won ‘Best team image’ and were presented our trophy by the BBC news reader Rebecca John. Porthcawl Pupils Show They Are Shopper Savvy I’d like to congratulate the team of pupils from Porthcawl Comprehensive who recently won a major regional consumer rights competition in Cardiff. Year 12 students Jack Bridger, Matthew Dang, Nathaniel King and Felicity Williamson-Sarll defeated eight schools from around Wales to be crowned Young Consumers of the Year 2015 at the Welsh final. They’ll now go forward to the UK final which will take place in London next month, and their success means that Bridgend County Borough is being represented at this stage of the competition for the fourth year running. Co-ordinated by the Trading Standards Institute, Young Consumer of the Year sees teams from UK secondary schools compete against each other in a University Challenge-style quiz - which includes questions on consumer and legal affairs, social responsibility and credit and finance. The competition is designed to help make young people more aware of important consumer and financial issues, and Bridgend County Borough Council’s Trading Standards service will now work closely with the Porthcawl Comprehensive team to prepare them for the UK final where they will face regional winners from England and Scotland. I’m sure that readers will join me in wishing the Porthcawl team the very best of luck for the final. SCHOOLS Nottage Primary News

St Clare’s School News

After the Easter break, filled with some glorious weather, we all returned to school full of enthusiasm for the summer term. We welcome to our staff two new teachers – Miss Mikaela Davies and Miss Hannah-Marie Grant, who will work in the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 respectively. I’m sure they will enjoy their time at Nottage. We are delighted that our Rising 3s have settled into the Tiddler’s way of life so well and their outdoor adventures will really take off in the fine weather of the next few months. Once again, we were the hosts for the cluster jazz workshop as part of the Porthcawl Jazz Festival. ‘Groove On’ led the workshop, which involved over a hundred pupils making moody, dulcet tones – on their instruments I may add! K M Townley

Newton Primary School Some children in Year 5 and 6 have been taking part in Premier League Reading Stars Cymru. This is a programme that has been created by the National Literacy Trust in partnership with the Premier League. In a recent lesson ‘fixture’ the children were fortunate to have a visit from footballer Craig Bellamy who spoke to the children about the importance of reading and learning in school. He gave the children an inspiring talk about always aiming high in all aspects of school, life and football! Years 5 and 6 have really been enjoying their creative sessions with the unique iPad app called FEED. We have been working with the app developers to create digital soundscapes as part of our ‘Technotastic’ topic. The final mixes will be available on CD. Our Nursery pupils have been learning about springtime and new life. How amazing to have some parents bring in their three day old chicks for us to look at and hold, we have had the chicks return to visit us a few weeks later, we couldn’t believe how much they had grown! Rachel John (Acting Head Teacher)

The build up to the Easter holidays was a busy time at St. Clare’s School with a number of trips, sporting fixtures and charity events. A particular favourite for pupils was ‘Onesie Day’ which was organised to raise money for the Sandville Self-Help Centre in Porthcawl. Everyone loved the opportunity to come to school in their cosy onesies and pyjamas for such a brilliant, local cause. Our Interact Club also arranged an Easter Egg appeal and asked for donations of chocolate eggs and small gifts to donate to children at Ty Hafan. We had an amazing response and filled the entire school minibus with chocolate eggs and cuddly toys. The Interact Club then visited Ty Hafan to deliver the donations in person. Thank you to everyone for such generosity! The summer term is now well underway and pupils in the Senior School are making the final preparations for their GCSE and A Level exams. Everyone is looking forward to the end of year trip to Barcelona, which will be the perfect reward after these months of hard work for our Year 11 and Year 13 students. We wish everyone sitting their summer exams the best of luck. On Friday 15th May the grounds of St. Clare’s will be open for some very special visitors for a Teddy Bear’s Picnic. If you have a child or grandchild aged 8 or below we would love you to join us for an afternoon picnicking on delicious food and bouncing on the bouncy castle. St. Clare’s School Newton CF36 5NR Porthcawl 01656 789966 St. Clare’s School is a co-educational, non-selective independent school for children aged 2½ - 18 years. The school stands in beautiful and spacious grounds, in the picturesque village of Newton, near Porthcawl. The school runs two safe and reliable minibus services which collect and drop off pupils living in Llantwit Major, Cowbridge, Coity, Port Talbot and Neath as well as various pick up points throughout the Vale of Glamorgan.

St. Clare’s provides a return to traditional old fashioned values and standards in a modern setting. Pupils throughout the school have access to iPads, and an Apple Mac suite is available for pupils in the Senior School. Contemporary GCSE and A Level subjects such as Graphic Design, Computer Science and Psychology are offered alongside more traditional subjects such as History, Music, French and Spanish. An official Estyn Inspection in June 2014 rated the Nursery at St. Clare’s as “Excellent,” which is the highest grade that can be awarded. The official inspection found the standard of teaching and learning in the Nursery to be excellent, and highlighted many strengths of the care provided to children. St. Clare’s School also boasts some outstanding examination results both at A Level and GCSE. In August 2014, staff and students celebrated the best A Level Results in 9 years, with a 100% pass rate.

News Be The Eyes, Ears And Paws Of The Community A new scheme was launched in Porthcawl recently which is encouraging dog owners to help tackle anti-social behaviour in the area by acting as the eyes, ears and paws of the local community. South Wales Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue and Bridgend County Borough Council have teamed up for Paws On Patrol, a new initiative that asks members of the public who come across criminal or anti-social behaviour while walking their pets not to intervene, but to simply report and help gather evidence. I think this is a great idea as dog walkers often visit parts of the county borough that are harder to reach, out of the public eye and more vulnerable to the effects of anti-social behaviour such as vandalism, fly-tipping, fire-setting and more. Because dogs are so perceptive, they may see or hear something that is out of place and help alert their owners to any suspicious activities, so we are also encouraging owners to be more aware of their pet’s behaviour while out walking, too. We all have a role to play in looking after our community, so don’t forget that anyone can report suspicious behaviour at any time by calling the police on 101. Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

Cuts To Local Further Education Colleges Will Undermine Skills Agenda Recent announcements of severe cuts to courses and compulsory redundancies for staff in further education colleges will undermine the Welsh Government’s own skills agenda and leave many people with fewer employment options. Bridgend College has recently announced that it has a shortfall of £3 million next year, which could mean staff redundancies and the loss of courses. They are working to minimise the impact of the loss of income. The Welsh Government decision to slash funding for FE College part-time courses across Wales by 50% cannot help but have a negative impact upon skills provision and therefore upon local businesses. Employers are looking for a skilled and work-ready workforce. That is something that Further Education can provide. These Welsh Government cuts are hitting a sector that is doing the most to enable people in work to increase their skills, and to enable people seeking to return to work to obtain the up-to-date knowledge they need to get a job. The economic wellbeing of our area depends upon life-long learning. Our FE Colleges are major providers of this learning to young and old alike. Cutting the funding for part-time courses, and the talented and dedicated workers who provide them makes no sense. How to choose a letting agent… You need to feel secure in the knowledge that your investment is in safe hands. Matthew Rich, the new Lettings Valuer in the Porthcawl branch offers his advice on choosing a letting agent. Matthew has a wealth of experience, having previously managed a lettings team in Cardiff successfully for several years. 1. Is the agent regulated by ARLA, NAEA, NALS or RICS? At Peter Alan we are regulated by ARLA and NAEA, in fact our Head of Lettings has recently been appointed as the South Wales ARLA Representative. ARLA self-regulates letting agents to ensure that you are provided with the highest levels of customer service and that your property is handled safely and with care. 2. Does the agent offer a rent guarantee scheme? Our unique and highly regarded rental guarantee scheme ‘PayProtect’ is a market leading initiative offered to landlords of properties we manage. PayProtect is exclusive to Peter Alan and it gives you the security and peace of mind that your rent will be paid on time. PayProtect includes legal expenses cover should you need to repossess the property. Once possession is granted, we will pay 75% of the monthly rent to you until a new tenant is found (up to a max. of 2 months.) 3. How long have they been trading? We have 50 years of experience in the property industry, giving you the peace of mind of using a reputable company. We work hard to continue our ethos of the company as set in 1965, we are proud to be a company that still provides service with a personal touch. 4. Are they a member of an appropriate redress scheme such as The Property Ombudsman (TPO)? At Peter Alan we are a member of the TPO and we have also signed up to an additional Code of Practice, which means we are are required to provide additional consumer protection that goes beyond that required by law. 5. What fees are the agent offering? Price is important but find out what is included. It’s easy to advertise low fees, but does this include everything you would expect from the lettings service? For example, many agents charge extra for the completion of inventories or the protection of tenants deposits. 6. Does the agent have the support of a large network? As the largest estate agent in Wales we have a network of 26 branches and our Lettings Support Centre. This ensures that we can carry out the whole letting process in-house to include applications, referencing, maintenance, deposit returns and property inspections. 7. Where does the agent advertise your property? As 95% of people start their property search online, it is essential that your property is advertised on both of the biggest property websites, Rightmove and Zoopla. If your property is not on both of these websites you are excluding a huge group of potential tenants.

If you would like to find out more about any of this information or would like to arrange a free, no obligation rental valuation of your property contact us today on 01656 771600.

News Restoration Scheme Another Step In Porthcawl’s Regeneration The restoration of the Pilot Lookout Tower, Customs House and other properties around the harbour will complement the exciting work planned for the nearby Jennings Building and is another important step in Porthcawl’s overall regeneration. The Townscape Heritage Initiative is all about the repair and restoration of historic buildings that are deteriorating, regardless of their ownership, and bringing them back into use. We are extremely proud of our heritage, and the Porthcawl THI scheme is initially focusing on a group of significant buildings around the harbour and square that were identified in the bid for funding. Specialist contractors with experience of working on listed buildings will be required and, wherever possible, local companies will be used. For example, Maesteg firm Stafford Construction are working on the restoration of Customs House and the Pilot Lookout Tower. As well as undertaking conservation work to these buildings, we’re looking to find new uses for them too, and it has been confirmed that the Pilot Lookout Tower is to transfer from the council to the National Coastwatch Institution, who will operate a voluntary coast watch service. That’s exactly what we want to see, and hope to announce further new uses for other buildings soon. What’s The Future Of Parc Slip? There is great anxiety in the communities of Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Cefn Cribwr about what will happen to the old Parc Slip opencast mine. Nothing has been done to restore the site since coaling stopped in 2008. And the massive void there has filled with water, up to 40 metres in depth. A public meeting in Kenfig Hill was attended by over 100 local people and their views were clear. They do not want any more coaling, they do not want the void retained as a sort of water feature and do not want any houses built there. What they do want is for this land to be restored to the natural landscape that existed before the opencast ripped its way through. The cost of restoring the site is put at £70m but there is just £5.7m in the pot. How are we to find a solution that is acceptable but also affordable? I have set up a meeting with Celtic Energy chiefs and hope to explore the options that are being put forward - such as they are. There has to be a way forward or the area will be blighted for decades more.

FEATURES The U3A Story

Porthcawl Townswomens Guild News

Four main reasons are quoted in ‘The U3A Story’ to justify its creation. Firstly, people living longer than ever before. Secondly, people not just living longer, but also living healthier lives, and keeping their mental and physical abilities longer. Lastly the way we now think about ourselves with greater expectations than ever before. If you have access to a computer you can easily obtain more information by typing ‘Porthcawl U3A’ into ‘Google’. At the simple click of a button you will discover what Porthcawl U3A is all about. You will also find a ‘You Tube’ access point, which will allow you to observe group activities including our Craft, Movement to Music, Walking and even Table Tennis recreational groups. Several of our monthly talks held at the Hi Tide are also recorded. Make no mistake, Porthcawl U3A is essentially a ‘for fun’ organisation that always seeks to satify its members wishes and at the cost of £35 annual fee there could not be a better investment. No one need feel lonely or isolated if they become members of Porthcawl U3A where all are always made welcome. For more information ring Clive Mort 01656 783663 or Email cmorte@hotmail.com. What great weather we had over Easter – let’s hope this month brings more of the same! We have been busy as usual planning activities for the year ahead. Our lunch club met at Beales always a popular destination. Another competitive games afternoon was enjoyed and the literary group discussed the work of the Dorset poet Thomas Hardy. A Pavilion lunch time drama was again attended by a keen group. As we get older we don’t always like turning out in the evening so these lunch time plays are appreciated. At each guild meeting we have a table with a large selection of cards made by our craft group making money for the guild. Our April speaker Rev. Clive Williams was a welcome return visitor. He gave us a most interesting presentation on J.S.Bach in his amusing and inimitable way illustrated on the piano. We were amazed to hear that Bach had twenty children by two wives!! This months meeting is on May 13th 2.00p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Mr. Alan Badington will be “Lost For Words”. That sounds intriguing so do come along to join us. Tel. 772157 for information. Dorothy Thomas

Through Christian Eyes Jesus preached, “The time is fulfilled, the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe the Good News” (Mark 1 v 15). This message is simply this: When Jesus came 2000 years ago it was the fulfillment of many Old Testament prophecies that said a King would come who would destroy the works of the kingdom of darkness and set people free from it’s power. The power of death would be one of those works. Jesus came to set people free and offer them eternal life! As he did then so he does now - he calls people to repent and believe. This means to turn to him and to put our trust in him as the King that God sent. Jesus is King of the whole universe and everything in it. Through his conquering of death in his resurrection he is now the Lord. We will do well to get to know Jesus personally so we can also experience the gift of eternal life - and also the wonderful blessings that it can bring into our lives now! Neil Harvey

News From The Talbot It’s that time of year again when daffodils are blooming, evenings are getting lighter and membership of the Talbot is due for renewal! You will be pleased to know that we are not increasing our costs this year, so the membership remains at £5.00 per person, and lunches will still be £4.50 (although members will be charged £4.00) which will include a main course, dessert, and coffee or tea served to your table. An example of our lunch menu is a beef dinner OR beef curry, rice and chips AND Manchester tart & cream, coffee or tea – all for £4.00! Non-members will be obliged to pay an extra 50p for lunches, bingo sessions and £1.00 extra for various theatre and day trips we arrange. Why not visit our web site www.talbotcc. co.uk and view our menu for the month. Refurbishment at the Rees Centre, our recently acquired building, is moving forward. A new office, named the Cynffig Office is an office with a view – our walled garden. The bulbs we planted last autumn are now in flower, and are a sight to be seen. Cheryl Butcher

FEATURES Samtampa Memories

Early afternoon on the 23rd of April 1947 the Liberty ship Samtampa began its Bristol Channel passage to Newport unaware that fate was about to overwhelm it. The big 7,200 ton vessel with a 2,500 HP engine and a crew of 39 was struggling against a freak storm that had become a hurricane and they decided to ‘heave-to’ and drop both anchors in the lee of the North Devon coast.

Tragically it was no match for such a cruel sea and the vessel was forced across the channel and broken into three pieces on the rocks at Sker Point. The Mumbles lifeboat in an heroic rescue attempt suffered the same fate and all 47 seamen were lost. To inspire future generations and perpetuate the incredible courage and valour of Porthcawl’s ‘Secret Tragedy’, Porthcawl Shout Forum is working in partnership with BCBC to provide a suitable memorial overlooking the sea on the eastern promenade. A meeting at the Prince of Wales, Kenfig is being planned for people who remember the disaster and ITV are interested in recording their memories for the National Film Library in Aberystwyth. If you have Samtampa memories or experiences you would like to share please contact Gary Victor Tel 783491 or Clive Mort 783663. Gary Victor Porthcawl Shout Forum Seaside News | 26

Life With Porthcawl Lions

With a successful coffee morning behind them, members of Porthcawl Lions Club are busy preparing for the annual May Fayre at All Saints church on Bank Holiday Monday (May 4th). This year will be it will be better than ever with music from a ukulele band and rock club, exotic animals, dog show and a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, as well as games, stalls and refreshments. And there is still time for teams of four to enter the Porthcawl Lions annual golf competition at the Grove Golf Club on Friday 5th June. This year all profits are to be equally divided between prostate cancer and ovarian cancer so male, female and mixed teams are welcome. If you are not a golfer, or cannot make the day but still want to support the charities you or your business, could always sponsor a hole for £50. The Vintage Fair takes place at Porthcawl Rugby club in August, but more details in the near future. There have been a lot of enquiries about the popular car boot sales. Talks are ongoing and things are looking promising, but at present there is nothing definite to report, but keep watching for good news soon. For more information about these and other Lions’ events visit Porthcawl Lions website porthcawllions.org John Cosson

Massive Black Hole Discovered At Cosmic Dawn Scientists have discovered the brightest quasar in the early Universe, powered by the most massive black hole yet known from that time. The discovery of the quasar, named SDSS J0100+2802, marks an important step in understanding how quasars, the most powerful objects in the Universe, have evolved from the earliest epoch, ‘only’ 900 million years after the Big Bang, which is thought to have happened 13.7 billion years ago. The quasar is at a distance of 12.8 billion light-years. Thanks to the new generation of digital sky surveys, astronomers have discovered more than 200,000 quasars, with ages ranging from 0.7 billion years after the Big Bang to today. The new quasar is seven times brighter than the most distant quasar known (which is 13 billion light-years away). It harbours a black hole with mass of 12 billion solar masses, making it to be the most luminous quasar with the most massive black hole among all the known high-redshift (very distant) quasars. By comparison, our own Milky Way Galaxy has a black hole with a mass of ‘only’ 4 million solar masses at its centre. FEATURES Kruf Walk For Life Although it was probably the windiest day of the year and freezing cold, the stalwart members of KRUF and their hardy supporters nearly blew away in Cosy Corner, Porthcawl on the annual Walk For Life. The mayor of Porthcawl, Cllr Sean Aspey, cut the ribbon and the brave walkers battled the elements to complete the course. A massive thank you to all who turned up and for all the kind donations from non walkers. Donations can still be paid at Bon Marche in John Street or given to a committee member. Don’t forget Ascot tickets are still on sale for June 13th. Judith Hurst

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Newton WI News

Porthcawl WI News

In our April meeting we were privileged to have as our guest speaker Captain David Cledlyn Jones who at 91 years of age had a most remarkable memory. He talked about his experiences during World War Two, how when aged only 17 he was on board the freighter Quebec City when it was torpedoed by a German U Boat. He led a very adventurous life – which he has written an account of entitled ‘The Enemy We Killed, My Friend’. It was a most enjoyable talk. Our meeting ended with an Easter Bonnet Parade, what a fine display of hats, all beautifully put together by our members. The chosen winner was Janet Moseley. Recently, we held a Fashion Show, courtesy of ‘Bon Marche’ Bridgend when six of our ladies wowed us with their modelling skills, showing off the outfits to great advantage. For further information regarding Newton WI, call Pearl on (01656) 772657. M Freeman

At our last WI meeting, Samantha B held a fashion show for us and some of our WI members were models for this event. There was a good turnout for this occasion, and it proved to be a very popular and successful afternoon. There is plenty going on in the forthcoming year, with various trips planned. We have a Beetle Drive organized before our annual meeting in May, which always proves to be a fun event. We have all this and more, if you would like to come and join us you will be given a warm welcome. We meet on the 4th Thursday of the month at 2pm at All Saints Church Hall. Please ring Gwen on (01656) 783238 if you would like further information. G Stapleton (Secretary)

Kenfig Hill WI Tuesday 14th April, Kenfig Hill WI held their monthly meeting in the Talbot Centre. We had a good turnout of members, minutes were read and details of forthcoming events were discussed. Several of our members are going to the Centenary Garden Party in the Margam Orangery in July – best hats and frocks to the fore. There is a wealth of events organised for our WI members in the months ahead so watch this space. With WI business over, our speaker Mr. Davies gave us a talk on ‘Weird Wills’, which was interesting and enlightening. A vote of thanks was given by Marjorie our president. Next month is our AGM so no speaker. The speaker in June is Mr. Dean Powell - his topic Dr. William Price – a talk which will be very interesting I’m sure. Our doors and always open, call in – you’ll be surprised who has already joined. Christine Callaghan

Sker WI News The well attended April meeting was held on 9th April (2nd Thursday) in St David’s Church Hall, Nottage. President Nora Williams addressed the meeting, Secretary Cynthia Sidey read the minutes of the last meeting - which were approved and signed, together with WI news. The speaker for the evening was Mrs Pat Johnson whose subject was ‘What goes on in my shed?’ All was quickly revealed. The intriguing title was only surpassed by the talented lady herself, who after retiring from school teaching, studied the art of feltmaking for 3 years. She humorously demonstrated the complex process and history of this art. Samples of silks and raw fleece wool accompanied her talk, with countless lovely garments, hats and scarves in her range on display, and for sale. Each garment is quite unique. She modelled her hats, some of which were quite comical and her antics brought the house down! On 14th May is the Annual Meeting, when members will be parading in their ‘Ascot’ finery to compete for the prettiest hat. Visitors and new members are very welcome. Rosalie Hopper

Laleston WI News The April meeting was opened with members and a new guest warmly welcomed by the president Margaret Aylen followed by the minutes being approved and signed. Business details included transport arrangements for the Fashion Show Lunch in Mumbles and the Council Meeting in Port Talbot. Dates for the monthly Luncheon and Book Clubs were also arranged, members agreed we have a busy time before our next meeting. Our guest speaker Margaret Rogers then gave us a very interesting talk on her experiences as an Olympic Games Maker in the summer of 2012. She led us through her reasons for volunteering, the selection process, security checks and her uniform items, which we thought were very smart, along with anecdotes of her duties and people she met - including a chat with Seb Coe. A vote of thanks was given by Joan Rule. Our next meeting on May 7th will be our Annual Meeting and members were reminded that nominations for committee would be welcomed and we will also have a Bring & Buy Stall run as usual by Barbara Rees. We meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7.15pm in Laleston Gardening Club where guests and new members are always welcome. Contact Margaret on 01656 660384 for further information. Finance Discounted Gift Trusts If you have excess capital that you are unlikely to need but from which you require a regular income, a Discounted Gift Trust may be an ideal way of reducing your Inheritance Tax liability. What is a Discounted Gift Trust? It is a life insurance investment bond, held in trust for beneficiaries of your choice. It involves making a gift of a lump sum, which is invested in a bond that is written in trust. You reserve the right to receive regular capital withdrawals (the ‘income’) from the bond at a level to suite your needs. Who is it suitable for? A discounted gift trust is particularly suitable for people aged sixty or over, who are reasonably likely to survive for the next seven years. How much inheritance tax can be saved? That depends on how long you live after setting up the bond, as well as how much you invest and the size and frequency of your capital withdrawals. There are two main elements to the Inheritance Tax (IHT) saving: (1) Part of the lump sum potentially becomes immediately exempt from IHT when you make the gift. The size of this “discount” will vary from person to person, and will depend on your age, sex and health, as well as the size of your capital withdrawals. (2) The remainder of your investment will be reduced by IHT taper relief and become fully exempt from IHT when seven years have elapsed from the date of the gift. A Discounted Gift Trust should be considered as part of an overall IHT planning strategy, and not in isolation. If you would like any more information about Discounted Gift Trusts, or about inheritance tax planning in general, please contact me on 01656 785700. Chris Ellis One Life Financial 01656 785700

Mortgages For The Over-50s The mortgage season is now in full swing and with the recent fine weather people are out there house-hunting or getting off the expensive deal they’re on currently, to take advantage of the record low rates now available. The biggest issue facing everyone, though, is that of securing mortgages in light of the affordability rules that now dictates decisions by lenders. Apart from the problem of deposits for first-time buyers, the group otherwise most affected is the over50s, where people have been made to feel that they’re too old. That is NOT the case. Over almost 30 years at Cambria Financial, we have been able to provide our clients with access to the whole market, bar for one or two ‘direct-only’ lenders and the over-50s are well catered-for, obviously subject to meeting the lenders’ criteria, which a great many actually DO. There are millions of mortgages (including interest-only, where the borrower has no means of repaying the loan) held currently by the over-50s, which have become something of a burden and this is made worse when they are paying much higher interest rates than need be the case. Now, whilst no one is 100% guaranteed from the outset to get the cheaper or more appropriate mortgage of their choice, Seaside News | 34

independent mortgage advisers have access to schemes you probably don’t even know exist. Yes, standard-type mortgages, as well as those on an equity release-type basis. As with all matters financial, the key is simply to TALK to someone who can help you and much of our business comes from calls made by readers of this publication who really appreciate being able to access appropriate advice. Whatever your mortgage requirements, or if you just want to run an idea by someone in the know, please call us – 01656 782545. We do NOT charge for speaking with you and discussing how you should proceed. First-time buyers and others are also most welcome to call – there are incentivised schemes for those starting out on the property ladder, so get in touch. 01656 782545 – make that call today. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545

Understanding The Taxation Issues On Pensions Whilst the new flexible rules governing pensions has been welcomed by many, understanding the taxation issues for what should be a simple process is something else. Are you aware that you could face a tax charge of up to 45% to access your income? Are you aware that simply accessing your pension could have an adverse effect on your ability to contribute to your current scheme, which may be an employer or final salary operated scheme? Have you considered whether accessing your savings before accessing your pension may be a more appropriate solution from both an income tax and inheritance tax position? It is also wise to consider what happens to your pension on your death. If you take your tax free cash but don’t use it before you die (e.g. it is left in a bank account), it becomes part of your estate. This means your beneficiary may need to pay Inheritance Tax. If you die before 75 pension benefits are paid free of inheritance tax so you should consider drawing from the pot in stages. It is possible to leave this to your children or grandchildren. Your beneficiary may have to pay tax if they don’t use it within 2 years of the date your provider was told of your death. If you die at 75 or later the pension fund is taxable. The tax your beneficiary pays depends on how and when they take the money. Your beneficiary might pay extra tax if the amount you take from your pot before you die, plus the amount you leave behind is greater than £1.25 million. The key message from us as a chartered firm specialising in this field is that you should seek advice before doing something that you could later regret. Our initial meetings are free and you are under no obligation. Meetings can be arranged in the comfort of your own home, anytime of the day or evening. Bird Watch: Grey Squirrel

May Garden Watch

The Grey Squirrel was introduced to the UK in the late 19th or early 20th century from the USA. It is often considered a pest, mainly due to its habit of stripping the bark off trees, and is blamed for the decline of the native Red Squirrel. Grey Squirrels transmit the squirrel-pox virus; whilst the disease kills the red it does not appear to affect the grey. Squirrels are scatter-hoarders meaning that they cache small amounts of nuts and seeds in hundreds of different places, ready to be re-found when times get tough. The only colour squirrels can see is yellow; all other colours are shades of grey. A wide range of ‘Squirrel-proof’ feeders are now available. A squirrel feeder box positioned on the entry route into the garden can help deter them from the bird feeders. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. Amanda Skull 07952 758293 Email: gbw@hiafi.co.uk

With summer just around the corner our gardens should be bursting into life and with the warmer temperatures it really is a great place to work or relax in. This month we should be looking at starting our weekly lawn cutting regime and its also a good time to apply a high nitrogen fertiliser if we want to give our lawns a healthy appearance. Time to deadhead those daffodils and tulips which most certainty will be looking past their best by now although it’s best to leave the foliage to die back naturally. Look at putting some support in place for your taller herbaceous species and you can also tie in your climbing or rambling roses at this time. It’s always best to try and train your roses as near to horizontal as possible to encourage more side shoots along the stem. You can start to cut back excessive growth of plants within your ponds and remove blanket weed. Be sure to leave any vegetation removed from the pond on the side for 48 hours so any invertebrates etc can return to the water. Finally, in the evening look out for bats whose activity will have increased due to the abundant insects. Pete Ryall ecogreengardens.co.uk See my advert on page 9

Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club After a relaxing Easter, it’s time to get gardening again (and work all that chocolate off!). May is the greenest month of the year and one of the busiest. Trim evergreen hedges this month but remember it’s illegal to disturb nesting birds, so be sure to check for nests before you start, you wouldn’t want to make a bird homeless! In the vegetable patch sow beetroot, carrots, swede and sweetcorn. Leave planting runner beans, until June, if the ground is wet and cold, they need heat to do well and may rot without it! Provided the risk of frost has passed, summer bedding can be planted out towards the end of the month for a dazzling summer display. Aren’t nasturtiums brilliant, so easy, push the seeds into compost and up they come! You can eat them too (just ask my tortoise she loves them!) Did you know? The runner bean originates from Central America and was brought to the UK as an ornamental garden plant; the longest one grown here was 86.5 cms. We have a plant sale in the front garden at number 2 Bryn Terrace on Saturday 16th May come and buy some (and help swell our funds)! Chris Early Seaside News | 36

Laleston Gardening Club News So here we are - May already, it seems despite the fantastic weather we are having, we must beware of late frosts. Don’t be tempted to put out your vulnerable plants until the middle of the month. Better still, why not come to the Laleston Gardening Club Plant Sale on Saturday May 9th from 10am? There will be a huge selection of quality bedding plants, both vegetables and flowers, and all have been cared for by members in their respective greenhouses. It has taken a lot of planning! The Landlord of Laleston Inn is allowing us the use of the car park, so no fear of a gridlock. I have been told that not just the house needs spring cleaning, but the garden needs attention too. Hoe, hoe, hoe, to get rid of weeds before they take hold. Annual pests such as groundsel / dandelions are a priority. Try to minimise the use of chemicals - they kill off pests, but they also kill the beneficial insects that prey on them, such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae. Now is the time to get serious about slugs and snails - use pet-friendly slug pellets. Gwen Bradford

There’s Always That One Tree… That prevents the sun entering your garden, creates damp areas and causes a potential hazard to both you and your property. Trees are part of our ecosystem, in fact our company logo is ‘The Tree Of Life’ although sometimes they can become dangerous and need to be removed. We can remove trees from your property but have a passion for the environment so can easily cut them back if you prefer. In fact, we can bring life to your garden or business area by maintaining overgrown trees and hedges or simply removing dense areas of growth. Welsh Tree Felling is a local Bridgend family business, run by a father and son who can cater for domestic work as well as larger commercial contracts. We’re insured up to £5 million and trained to NPTC (National Proficiency Tests Council) standard so rest assured your property will be well taken care of. We can also remove all waste, as we are registered waste carriers. So, if you need something as small as a hedge trimmed or large trees felled, we can help. TIPPING THE BALANCE IN YOUR FAVOUR

There are lots of law firms. All of them have qualified lawyers, just like Douglas-Jones Mercer. Most offer collectively, many years of experience, like Douglas-Jones Mercer. Some have been established for a long time like Douglas-Jones Mercer. So what do we offer that others do not? In a word, practicality. Our job is to clarify the law, not mystify it. Clear thinking and accurate drafting are the tools of our trade. It is this straightforward approach which has helped us become one of the largest law firms in Wales. Our roots go back to 1946, but we are more interested in the present than the past. And right now, what our clients want is efficient and cost effective legal advice. The key to providing this is not comfortable modern offices, or excellent communication facilities, or intelligent use of computers, though we are certainly well equipped in these areas. It is the quality of personnel that makes the difference and at Douglas-Jones Mercer we believe that the combined talents of our legal team are second to none. Individually they offer great depth of knowledge in particular aspects of the law. Collectively they offer great breadth. And all of them regularly receive in-service training to keep them up to date on changes in the law. The result is an enthusiastic and lively team ready and willing to tackle any legal problem which our clients present us with. The same applies to our support staff, without whom our lawyers could not function effectively. By recruiting carefully we have been able to develop a particularly friendly and informal atmosphere while maintaining an efficient organisation. If this sounds like the kind of legal practice you are looking for, do call us. You will be joining a client list which ranges from large companies to private individuals, a list which has grown mainly from personal recommendation. They have discovered our philosophy of placing long term value for money before short term economies and they feel at home with it. In our business, just as in life, that counts for a lot.

Health Kruf Walk For Life Although it was probably the windiest day of the year and freezing cold, the stalwart members of KRUF and their hardy supporters nearly blew away in Cosy Corner, Porthcawl on the annual Walk For Life.

Parkinson’s Self-Management Programme Through funding with the local health board ABMU and Parkinson’s UK/Cymru own resources, three sets of 6 sessions will be provided in Bridgend area of the Self-Management Programme. These will start in June, with further sessions running through 2015 until March 2016. The self-management groups are run by trained volunteers who have first-hand experience of Parkinson’s. The aim of the group sessions is to give people with Parkinson’s and/or the carer, an opportunity to think, and to decide what priorities are important to themselves and enabling them to put these actions into place. Topics covered are relationships, top tips, taking care of self, looking ahead and plans for the future. The groups are a maximum number of 12 to enable discussion to be of value to each person in the group. These sessions are 1 per week over 6 weeks starting Tuesday 2nd June until 7th July at 1pm until 3:30pm at the Care & Repair Office, Brocastle Manor, Bridgend, CF35 5AU. The Benefits Of Garlic We all know that garlic is not shy to make its presence known. The smallest culinary dose is enough to suffuse the entire body with its aroma. Garlic also permeates the research literature: the biomedical database known as MEDLINE, provided by the National Library of Medicine, contains 4245 study abstracts on garlic, a number of which we have indexed and organised for your use on our site: Health Benefits of Garlic. A cursory perusal of the literature there indicates that garlic has a significant role to play in preventing or treating well over 150 health conditions, ranging from cancer to diabetes, infection to plaque buildup in the arteries, DNA damage to mercury poisoning. In fact, a strong argument can be made (pun intended) that expanding the availability of garlic around the world as both a food and a medicine could prevent millions of deaths annually. According to World Health Organisation statistics, the populations of poorer countries die manly from causes directly connected to communicable infectious diseases, which incidentally are not caused by a lack of vaccines, rather, primarily through under-nutrition and malnourishment, lack of sanitation and hygiene, as well as the adverse physiological consequences of the depression and stress associated with poverty. The greater use and availability of garlic might provide a perfect alternative to global vaccine initiatives, the use of which are driven less by compelling scientific research, and more by political and economic forces. Garlic is easier to acquire and distribute, and can often be grown by the affected persons or communities affected, making it essentially free. POEMS Thanks To NHS It started off just an ordinary day Then I was whisked to Bristol eye hospital A bit of a shock I might say My daughter telling me Everything will be alright But nevertheless it was bit of a fright After my op I was told to sit upright Night and day for a week It really was impossible to sleep I spent my days watching who did this and who did that Not an easy task with a bandaged eye So much going on in the ward The nurses never stop First the breakfast trolly Would you like this or that? Such a cheerful man Who really likes to stop and chat Next the cleaning brigade are on their way They all have something nice to say Watch out for their massive long mops As they wheel our beds out of the way How strange to see no flowers! Not allowed on the wards windowsills today Back to my daughters now Going to have some rest Five star treatment, only the best! How wonderful our doctors and nurses are Our National Health Service is really the best by far Sue Waters, Porthcawl

Life Without Guidance

Their faces were full of misconception. Lessons of the day should be full of distraction… Or so they assumed. Learning – what is this? A path to follow, Or dreams which become hollow Without motivation. Some feel hindered in the company Of numbers and letters; Wanting to scream and shout To make it all feel better. But – Portraying moments of ugly behaviour Doesn’t improve their intake of knowledge, Even after a morning of porridge! It only disturbs a teacher’s thinking. Evolving stress, pain and fear, Of others not wanting to step up a gear And gain their “C” at the end of the year. Comfort and trust between teacher and pupil Seaside News | 42

The Sea By Me

Can form a special bond. A positive atmosphere With an appetite to listen; Something this simple will make a difference Today, Tomorrow, And beyond …If only they knew. A barrier from success Makes life such a mess; But – A person lending a hand Makes it easier to find The Promise Land. Holly Walker, Bridgend

I love the sea for it’s a part of me, I grew up next to it you see. The smell of the sea in the breeze and the smell of drying seaweed is often a smell of beauty, for it wakes one up completely. Walking the promenade is also just grand with the sun in your eyes and the glittering of sand. Just looking at the sea lap gently on the shore. You can relax for hours and hours and this I truly adore. On a sunny afternoon I tend to just sit and watch the sea and world go by. Listening to the seagulls soar high in the sky. Then as I close my eyes, I like to think I am one, soaring ever so high into the sun. Feeling it’s warmth embrace my body whilst I sit there, relax and drink my coffee.

Email us your poem info@seasidenews.co.uk

Then, the sound of the waves crashing onto the rocks. The sound brings me back, to the time that I had almost forgot.

Memories

Dancing in the sunshine of your love Warmed by the shelter of your care Nurtured in this soil that kept me safe Comforted to know that you were there A little child, I loved you And yet, I did not know you Was there any place you called your own? Who had you left at home who missed you there? What refuge did you have, when work was done To go for peace, rest and quiet prayer? If only I had loved you Enough to want to know you Dark clouds of war arose and all was changed And, Auntie dear, you were no longer there Too young to ask, or wonder, or to write And now too late to tell you I did care If only I had loved you Enough to get to know you But now I’ve come to find a greater love Of One who came to die to show His care Never to leave me, never to forsake Eternal life the gift He came to share

Then, as I am about to leave I find myself filled with glee, at the knowledge of how fortunate I am to live next to the sea… For you see that the sea…really does complete me. Callum Michael Williams, Porthcawl

Knowing Life Never Really Ends I know there is an angel, Watching over me, I sometimes sense them beside me, Although I cannot see. I think it is a loved one, Someone who I have known, They visit me regularly, To see how I have grown. I often feel a spine shiver, And tingle running through my hair, I often think about you, And then know you are there. It’s good to believe there’s heaven, And there are spirit friends, It also gives us comfort, Knowing life never really ends. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

And now, because I love Him My longing is to know Him. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

Celebrating music from the Six Nations, the choir sang a variety of songs from the folk tradition, contemporary works and Puccini’s ‘Messa Di Gloria’. Without our usual orchestra, our own accompanist, Glenn Crooks, demonstrated his talents on keyboard and organ. We were fortunate to have two up and coming young Welsh soloists; Meilir Jones, baritone, and Rhodri Prys Jones delighting the audience with their duet ‘Y Ddau Wlad Garwr’, earning the audiences’ applause before the last notes died away. We are grateful to our loyal audience members for their support, and would be even happier to see new faces at our next concert. We are also grateful to Father Masson who always welcomes us in the Church. The evening was made even more enjoyable by the interval refreshments! Thanks also to Porthcawl Town Mayor, Councillor Sean Aspey, who has attended all our concerts during his year in office. We were delighted to see our President, Carwyn Jones, who was able to take time out from other pressing concerns! Our next concert will be on July 11th. Dominique Spearey

A Film Maker’s Point Of View I expect quite a few readers will remember watching Thunderbirds on television in the 1960s, when the intrepid puppets set out each week to save the world from some new horror or natural disaster. Now they are back, and the strings have disappeared to be replaced by CGI, which stands for computer-generated imagery. The puppets themselves have gone into retirement, for nothing exists except for a digital image, which is cold and clinical. CGI was admittedly used in the past to erase the strings from view by digital re-mastering, but my point is that the work of puppet-makers, puppeteers, set designers, lighting cameramen and the plethora of talent that went into making the original show is now in the hands of computer operators. I watched the new Thunderbirds Are Go, and it left me yearning for Gerry Anderson’s original screen version. It is only one example of the way our entertainment is being changed from the ‘real to the artificial’, for the skill of the animator, whether working with drawings, moulding in clay or using articulated marionettes, has mostly been replaced by digital technology. Porthcawl Male Choir Report In recent months the choir has attracted a number of new members who have now settled in well. New members who have experience in another choir settle in quickly, those that join with no such experience can find it all somewhat mystifying at first. To overcome this problem a one page guide as been prepared which explains how a choir caters for the various differences in voice types, for example how baritones differ from bass, or first tenors from second tenors. This guide will shortly be available on our website Like most organisations a choir depends on those of its members who are prepared to undertake additional roles. These roles include serving on its management committee whose responsibilities include the arranging of concerts, which can include negotiating contracts with the agents of guest artistes. Additionally finance has to be managed, transport has to be arranged, music ordered, venues organised and so forth. Behind the scenes is another group of people who often go unnoticed. They are the ladies section, composed mostly wives of choristers, who provide invaluable support in a variety of ways for which we choristers are extremely grateful. John Williams PRO

The choir’s next concert will be on Sunday, May 17th 2015 at Tabernacl Chapel, Derwen Road, Bridgend when we will perform Elgar’s ‘Spirit of England’ with orchestra, together with other works, including ‘Over the Rainbow’, Deep River and ‘In a Monastery Garden’. The main work by Elgar was written in 1916 and is a stirring setting of three war poems by Laurence Binyon, which Elgar dedicated “to the memory of our glorious men”. The concert is conducted by Matthew Nash and the soloist is Soprano, Charlotte Ellett. There is something for everyone in this programme and it promises to be a delightful evening, both moving and uplifting. Sunday 17th May at 7.30pm. Art In Focus This month the focus is on one of the UK’s foremost ceramic artists: Claire Curneen. ‘In the Tradition of Smiling Angels’, 2007, is currently on show as part of the new exhibition, ‘Fragile?’ which is on at The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff for the next few months till October. In this work the ordinary and extraordinary exist side by side. Angels as the heavenly bringers of news, good or bad, are made of commonplace terracotta, yet are dripping with gold, which signifies high value and status. Claire Curneen’s work is distinct for its figurative representation. She draws us into a world of narrative, where the tension between the real and imagined is played out before us. Her ceramic figures have an imposing presence, which tap into our desires, fears and mysteries. They are highly visceral pieces referencing Catholic imagery from the early Italian Renaissance and have a rich textural finish with dribbles of glaze and flashes of gold. To learn more about Curneen’s ceramics and the work on display in Fragile?, the museum are putting on free tours to the public every Wednesday at 2pm with ‘live’ guides present in the galleries. Hi, it’s been pretty manic recently! I’ve been very busy involved with a film series called ‘Rock Talk’ about my illustrious music career, but it’s way past its schedule! Mind you, it’s my fault – when I saw the rushes of my interview I wasn’t happy. I looked like a skinny, balding 60-year-old. The re-shoot is much better: now I look like a skinny, balding 40-year-old! Still plenty for your diaries… Manic Street Preachers play Cardiff Castle on June 5th, which is a must see! The Steel House Fest held at Hafod-y-Dafal Farm in Ebbw Vale on 25th and 26th July features UFO, Dee Snider, Y&T and Tyketto. Porthcawl Soul Club holds its event at the Grand Pavilion on Saturday May 16th with our own Nigel Graham and Bristol’s DJ Dean of Go, Go Children. I’ve heard good reports about local songwriter and acoustic player Rebecca Hern and her new EP ‘Lions’, so will have a listen. Going to press, I’ve also heard that there might be a concert for the late Steve Strange at the Grand Pavilion, possibly in October, and will keep you posted on that. The group had a very good day and would like to thank the First Minister and the Assembly staff for making it possible.” Robert Taylor Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Over the last few months we have been running the Bridgend Big Read where we have a list of 100 books that it is thought everyone should read and what we have asked for from our borrowers is their top ten favourite books. We have had a fantastic response with a wide range of books suggested. Porthcawl’s top three are Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Our borrowers have enjoyed rereading old favourites and trying new challenges.

Sport Porthcawl RFC U7’s Update

The season is quickly coming to an end, but this has not stopped the boys from giving 100% effort and playing some excellent rugby against Llantwit Major, Treherbert and Bryncethin and coming away with two wins out of the three games. We were lucky enough to enter two teams into this years District Cup that took place on the 19th April. It was an action packed day against some very competitive opposition. The boys put their tagging, passing, defending and teamwork into to good use and all the hard work during the season was evident in each game. It has been brilliant to see the improvement from their very first training session to now and it bodes well for the future of Porthcawl RFC if the boys continue to learn and work hard. We were also nominated by Liz Wren-Owens for a Muller Wiseman promotion that they were running for junior sports clubs across the country. We were super pleased when we were informed that we had been drawn as prize winners, this meant that we were able to provide all the boys with training tops that will help through the forthcoming seasons in the ever changing South Wales weather conditions. Geraint Evans

News From Porthcawl Lifeguards First off, we would like to say well done to all our juniors who have braved the cold and rough sea conditions at Coney beach this April for some worthwhile and, dare I say fun, training sessions which I’m sure will pay dividends in the warm months to come. I know the hot showers back at the club at the top of the beach certainly help with thawing everyone out after a session in the sea and we are very lucky to have great facilities at our club which are greatly appreciated by the members who have to work hard at keeping the building well maintained and in top working order. Secondly we would like to say welcome back to our nippers who have enjoyed their first training sessions back on the beach this April and I know they will all be looking forward to getting back in the sea in May when the water temperature rises a little more. Finally we are still looking for new members especially nippers, so if you are over seven and can already swim, have a look at our club website porthcawlifeguards.co.uk for further info. Porthcawl Swimming Dragon School News Members attending our Monday class at Awel y Mor are enjoying practicing the special five phase exercises developed for people with arthritis by chief instructor John and a senior physiotherapist at Morriston Hospital. Although designed as an approved arthritis therapy, it is simplified Tai Chi, easy to learn, and good for other conditions and the elderly. The programme is copyright and only John’s Monday class can legally teach it in Porthcawl. Elsewhere only instructors of the Sun Style Tai Chi Association of Wales can legally teach it. Members are also learning the classical Sun Style sword especially Xing Yi Jian, which is very dynamic and some members with arthritis are having difficulty with some of the movements and have, at times, had to sit and watch. However, they all enjoy the gentle pushing hands and self defence partner practice, Qi Gong and classical Tai Chi. As the practice is two hours, 10am to 12 noon, for a nominal donation of only £4, less able members do not mind sitting and watching the others for some of the time. Tap It Out CC My apologizes for missing the March report, but the club held its first training camp to Majorca early March and if we weren’t on the bike we were soaking our heavy legs in the outside pool trying to recover for the next day’s ride. The trip went well and all the routes and climbs that Majorca has to offer were conquered. It was also nice to see the club colours out in force on foreign soil having a dig against other clubs from around the world, who also took the opportunity to ride and experience Majorca. Back home the weather has been a lot better and the intensity of the rides are beginning to heat up with the sportive season approaching. We are again attracting new members and the club membership now stands at 82. The Monday night club ride is back in full swing @18.00. This is an opportunity for new riders to ease themselves into the club and meet the friendly bunch that we are at a leisurely pace. Club rides are also Wednesday night chaingang -19.00hrs and Saturday 09.00hrs. Any questions please email me on nickemorgan@hotmail.co.uk. Nicky Morgan

Southerndown & Ogmore Surf Report I was sitting at Ogmore by Sea looking at a 1ft swell that just didn’t seem to be increasing in size as the tide pushed. I headed off to Rest Bay and found the surf was 3ft already – much bigger than Ogmore and Southerndown. As I was getting changed I was pleased to see Edward Lewis coming out of the water chuffed with his new surfboard. Pretty soon Huw, of Learn to Surf Porthcawl approached us and explained that the key box storage locks that we were both using are being broken into by low-lifes with cutters and three vans were stolen over the bank holiday weekend from Rest Bay car park. So what are we paying for to park there if there is no security? Huw explained they are trying to promote a security campaign and they have a locksmith who can cut keys for aqua bags = safer. To book a surf lesson or to enquire about a more secure van key, email Huw@porthcawlsurf. co.uk. Also, check out The Mobius cam. Hide it in long grass or a hedge etc. and film your van or car while you go surfing. David Batten tuskasurf.com Deadline date is always the 15th of the month
