KEEPING FIT Dear Editor, Since April 6th 2020 the neighbours in Glynstell Road (South end) have been gathering every morning at 11am to do ‘Keep Fit Exercises’. Obviously the numbers vary each morning from 5 to 16. Elwyn Williams, Porthcawl
Dear Editor, Hopefully we will have resumed our group litter picks at the time of reading this, assuming lockdown restrictions lift at the expected times. We will meet in May on Sundays at 4pm as advised last month. However from June we will go back to our original time of 5.30pm. We meet at the Eastern Prom as shown in the photo close to the entrance to Coney Beach. Now that we have close to 600 members in our Facebook group, we are thinking about litter picking on a Saturday evening too, to give people more opportunity to join us. Please join our Facebook group ‘Porthcawl Volunteer Community Clean Up’ for details. Huge thank you to our members for completing individual litter picks during lockdown. It has certainly made a difference to our town. Helen Lynn, Porthcawl
EXCITING PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF KENFIG NATURE RESERVE Dear Editor, If you are one of the thousands of people who visit the beautiful Nature Reserve at Kenfig you may have been wondering what the plans are for its future. Kenfig Corporation Trust has had to face some challenges and make some bold decisions to ensure the Reserve can continue to be managed well and retain its status as one of Wales’ top sand dune reserves alongside being a Site of Special Scientific Interest. However positive steps are being made, with the hiring of two staff. The new Warden Chris Jones will be working hard managing the dunes and protecting the diverse plants and wildlife on the site, and the new Reserve Manager Ceri John will be concentrating her efforts on the re-opening of the Reserve Centre with a view to making it a welcoming and vibrant visitor attraction. As we come out of lockdown plans for the centre include, craft workshops, education programmes, outdoor classrooms and stargazing sessions. Room Hire will also be available. Outdoor coffee and cake is already available from ‘The Hyde’ or ice cream from the van. New bins and signage have been purchased to encourage responsible disposal of litter and dog waste. The staff are strongly supported by the Trustees and with the easing of lockdown restrictions we will soon welcome 8 | seaside news

The Last Day
by Andrew Hunter Murray. It is 2059 and the world has stopped turning. One half of the Earth’s population endures an endless night, and the other half live in nothing but a constant burning sun. Life can only survive in the small twilit area. In the UK, a woman receives a letter from a dying man that holds a dangerous secret. One, that those in power, will kill to conceal. “Boldly imagined, beautifully written” Lee Child
RENOVATION WORK We are very happy that our doors are once again open for browsing. The new library layout makes the space safer for adults and families to browse by making it easier to maintain social distancing. Using our public PCs is more comfortable too - the lighting is more suitable and the space offers more privacy. We are still running a Book and Collect service, so if you’d like us to select books for you to collect, chat to us about how browsing works or if you’d like to book a PC appointment, please give us a call on 01656 754845. Welcome back and don’t forget to wear a face covering when you visit. 10 | seaside news
BOOK REVIEW BY LOUISE MUMFORD BODY ON THE ISLAND By Victoria Dowd.
An uninhabited island. Ten stranded strangers. No way to escape. Ursula Smart, realising therapy alone cannot teach her how to survive this life, is determined to make some changes. She signs herself up for a survival course — along with her mother, aunts Charlotte and Mirabelle and Bridget. But the promised gentle weekend of foraging and camping in the Outer Hebrides swiftly turns into a desperate battle for survival. The writing is beautiful and incisive, but what really makes this book is the fun rollercoaster of twists and turns laced with the acerbic dialogue between the family, especially Ursula and her mother. Reminiscent of the recent film ‘Knives Out’, it is the perfect escapism, keeping the reader guessing who the culprit is – definitely one to turn you off the prospect of booking a survival course! And if you fancy something else, perhaps try my debut thriller, Sleepless, which is out in ebook, audio and paperback now. John Marrs, bestselling author of The One (recently a smash-hit Netflix show) has called Sleepless “a thrilling, plausible and gripping debut. Frighteningly inventive.”

COST OF CANCER
OVER THINKING
Well Spring is well and truly here and it seems we’re heading towards summer at break neck speed. It looks like we are not putting the charity ball on this year as I think only weddings are allowed 50 people and it’s not financially viable to put a ball on for 50 people. We need some fresh ideas for fundraising so if anyone’s got some ideas, please do share. Don’t forget why we do all of this fundraising. We do it to help those who are going through treatment for Cancer. We help with things like gas, electric, council tax etc. All the bills that do still need to be paid. Anyone who gets in touch will be treated with the upmost privacy. We won’t sell your details onto anyone else because we don’t believe it’s right to. Your details are just that, your details. Please do keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. As restrictions are now easing please do take care of yourselves and each other. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees
Walking along the street and you notice someone you know on the opposite side. You wave, but they just carry on walking. What do you think next? Did they just ignore me? Are they annoyed at me? Did they miss my text? Did they dislike my online joke post? Is it because of .... ? And so it goes on, though of course none of this is true. The next time you see them they are wearing new glasses as the old ones needed a new prescription so they could no longer see in the distance. Cue thoughts of how stupid am I thinking those unhelpful thoughts about my friend. I’m always doing this, getting in a muddle, upset about imagined slights. Do they know how angry I have been, could they tell? Next time choose to be aware of that person, notice that they hadn’t acknowledged you and instead see how the next passerby smiled, the warm sunshine, the bird song above. There is always an alternative. You can decide to make a story up or you can return to the moment by taking a deep breath in and slowly letting it go. Be gentle on yourself. Margaret Brown
AN APPLE A DAY Apples have been associated with a number of benefits that could help promote long-term health because they are loaded with important nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. One medium apple provides the following nutrients: Calories: 95, Carbs: 25 grams, Fiber: 4.5 grams, Vitamin C: 9% of the Daily Value (DV), Copper: 5% of the DV, Potassium: 4% of the DV, Vitamin K: 3% of the DV. In particular, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant to neutralize harmful compounds known as free radicals and protects against disease. Apples are also a great source of antioxidants like quercetin, caffeic acid, and epicatechin. Studies show that eating more apples could be associated with a lower risk of several chronic conditions, including heart disease. In fact, one study in over 20,000 adults found that consuming higher amounts of white-fleshed fruits and vegetables, including apples, was linked to a lower risk of stroke. This may be due to the presence of flavonoids found in apples, which are compounds that have been shown to reduce inflammation and protect heart health. Apples are also loaded with soluble fiber, which may help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, both of which are risk factors for heart disease. NEWS WORK TO BEGIN ON NEW £6.4M FLOOD SCHEME Preparations are underway for the start of work on a new £6.4m scheme to defend Porthcawl from flooding and potential future rises in sea levels. With the first phase of the scheme set to focus on the iconic Western Breakwater, construction specialists Knights Brown are setting up a compound at Salt Lake in readiness for work to begin. As part of a second phase, which will run concurrently to the first, Knights Brown will focus upon upgrading the Eastern Promenade and creating improved flood defences between Porthcawl Marina and Coney Beach. The work will then extend into Sandy Bay and as far as Rhych Point, where flood defences and dune protection works will be upgraded. The work is being jointly funded by Welsh Government and Bridgend County Borough Council as part of the Coastal Risk Management Programme, and represents a significant investment into Porthcawl that will keep more than 500 homes and over 170 businesses safe from the risk of flooding. As well as protecting commercial and residential properties, the new sea defence works form a vital part of regeneration plans and will protect assets and infrastructure worth millions of pounds. Look out for further updates as the work progresses. COUNCILLOR CHARLES SMITH Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration Bridgend County Borough Council 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
PROPOSED RESIDENTIAL WOMEN’S CENTRE I know that many of my constituents were surprised to learn that the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl and Sunnyside House in Bridgend are among a number of sites across South Wales being considered by the Ministry of Justice as possible locations for its proposed residential women’s centre. I am amazed that the UK Government is looking at these sites. One is in the middle of a prime tourist area and the other next to a new housing development and surgery. Bridgend Council has objected to these plans and has set out their reasons for doing so very clearly. I have also made my own representations to the UK Government objecting to these plans. This looks like a proposal made in London without consultation. The county borough has already embraced more than its fair share of regional and national sites for people with complex needs. I do not disagree with the principle and I absolutely agree with my Labour colleague Sarah Murphy who has said if an all-Wales pilot scheme for women offenders is to be a success, it needs to be done properly and in the right place, not just for surrounding communities and businesses, but also for the women themselves.

NEWS FROM THE PORTHCAWL MAYOR
Residents can now see Porthcawl as a leader in Wales with the completion of new Town Council public toilets at Griffin Park. A very important investment in our Town as part of our strategy to make Porthcawl an accessible town. Thanks to our partners, RSC Architects of Bridgend, Cox’s Demolition and a leading national provider Healthmatic Ltd for the design and installation work. Cubicles incorporate easy-clean design/baby changing provision together with an over-night deep clean facility and are large enough to accommodate most pushchairs. Individually designed disabled cubicle is large enough to accommodate most wheelchairs. Access is by coin or bankcard and all money will go towards running and cleaning costs. I am also pleased to say that tenders are now being prepared for an ambitious refurbishment of John Street toilets with plans to complete the work during the winter. The new internal design will balance retaining its historic design with creating a more spacious layout. The disabled facility will be refurbished providing increased space, a shower and other suitable fixtures. I would like to pay tribute to Paul Jones who has been one of our front-line workers and has managed John Street toilets throughout this very difficult time due to the pandemic. COUNCILLOR BRIAN JONES Mayor of Porthcawl

NEWS NEW RECYCLING CENTRE The all-new community recycling centre at Pyle is making great progress and the project is on track for completion by summer 2021. This is great news for anyone who has had to queue to use the current Tythegston site because of pandemic operating conditions. Based within Village Farm Industrial Estate, the new development includes improvements to the junction with the A48, and has been specifically designed to make it easier for residents to access. With greater capacity for handling more vehicles, it features a split-level system with high-sided recycling containers, bypass lanes to allow better movement and a re-use shop similar to the one based at the Maesteg community recycling centre, which is run by Wastesavers. This will ensure that items that are in good condition can be offered at low prices to the public, and any profits will be reinvested into local good causes. In the meantime, community recycling centres have moved to summer opening times and are available between 8.30am-7pm Monday to Friday, and 8.30am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Please remember to separate materials before arrival, and follow all site rules to help keep you and staff safe. BEDFORD PARK BECOMES A NATURE RESERVE It’s great to see Bedford Park being officially acknowledged as a new local nature reserve and Frog Pond Wood in Pyle being extended to include Village Farm Meadow. With the backing of Natural Resources Wales, both areas can be managed and protected more effectively from inappropriate use or development. Covering 45 acres, Bedford Park supports a variety of marsh, woodland, grassland and wetland habitats, and is home to the likes of the speckled wood butterfly, chiffchaff, dormice and pipistrelle bats. The park also features the 18th century Cefn Cribwr Ironworks, and is on the National Cycle Network. While much smaller, Village Farm Meadow will add a habitat of purple moor grass to Frog Pond Wood, and will enable the council and its partners to support a greater number of species. This means that the county borough now boasts six local nature reserves - Locks Common in Porthcawl, Craig Y Parcau in Bridgend, Tremains Wood in Brackla, Kenfig Nature Reserve, Frog’s Pond Wood at Pyle and now Bedford Park near Cefn Cribwr. If you get the chance to visit these hidden gems, you can see for yourself some of the stunning scenery and nature that we have here on our doorstep. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
We are absolutely thrilled here at PCS to welcome back all our pupils together for the first time since December. It is a joy to hear the excited buzz of the pupils around the school grounds and it has been delightful to catch up with so many after such a long time. Our young people have shown such resilience and maturity over these difficult months and I would like to pay tribute to the flexibility and independence that they have demonstrated in just getting on with things. It has however been a very difficult time for everyone and our student support team based at Ty Enfys is there to help anyone who needs a bit of extra support. I am sure that we have brighter times ahead and we are all looking forward to school as normal and beginning some of the activities that we usually enjoy during the school year. As things improve nationally and the Covid-19 restrictions ease, we hope to reintroduce some transition events. Year 6 pupils received a ‘Moving On’ booklet before Easter, and hopefully they will be able to visit us later in the term to ease their move from primary school to PCS in September. A new ‘Transition’ tab has been added to our website where you can look out for information or ask any questions. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher
PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS
The summer term feels very special this year after all we have been through. With the weather warming up and the children happily settled back into school, life is starting to feel a whole lot better. We have made a lot more use of our extensive school
Email us your report to: info@seasidenews.co.uk grounds working on the allotment and nature garden. Many families have been concerned about the impact of the pandemic. With increased funding, we have put catch up programmes in place for emotional wellbeing, literacy and numeracy. When we asked the children their views on ‘catching up’, every class talked about playing, learning and laughing with friends, sharing lunchtimes together and having school birthday parties. Children are so clever; when we have good levels of wellbeing and a zest for life, we can develop and progress in all other areas of learning. We are a small and very friendly primary school. We always prioritise wellbeing and are proud of our excellent academic standards. If you are looking for a new school, please contact me for a chat on the number below or email admin.porthcawlprimary@bridgend.gov.uk. ST CLARE’S SCHOOL
We are delighted to announce that St Clare’s School Nursery has launched Forest School. We have a fantastic mini woodland area within our eleven acres of beautiful grounds so it’s the perfect location for the children to explore, have fun and learn. Forest School is an approach to learning that takes children into the great outdoors whatever the weather to explore the natural environment. Children learn through playing in the mud and the hands-on Forest School approach gives them plenty of opportunities to do just that. Our Nursery teacher, Carmen Vanderbrink, is a trained Forest School practitioner but she encourages exploration and discovery to support them to take risks. For children, Forest School activities develop confidence, selfesteem, imagination and physical ability as they are allowed to test their limits in the natural world. The hands-on learning approach allows children to develop skills that may be difficult to teach in the classroom. Central to Forest School is to keep active with plenty of activities that enable children to develop motor skills. Forest School is a great addition to our Nursery Curriculum, which already includes weekly Spanish and ballet. Helen Hier, Head Teacher

BIRD SONG
THE SHIPWRECK
I hear the doves sad cooing all day long, But how I long to hear my blackbird’s song, Though skylarks far beyond my eye can see, Singing and dancing there with ecstasy
Long months upon the rolling waves, Long months and so near land! And night drawing fast about, With safe harbour near at hand. “Foul black the night, wild the storm We sail – we shall not wait for dawn, So set a course”, the captain said From the sea-soaked bridge’s head. Onwards into the gloom of night Onwards into the blowing gale Full smote the shrieking wind athwart The flapping sheet of sail. Abaft the ship white-foam the waves, Loud shrieks the surging storm, Wooden prow dips in the deep White sail and mast are torn. Then all at once the ship hard strikes Black rocks submerged beneath the sea, And all at once the waves rush in What dread calamity! Down amongst the sea-slimed rocks Down amongst the foaming waves Down sank at last the shivered ship God would they had been saved. Dafydd Matthews, North Cornelly
Wise thrush still pours his joyous tune twice o’er Though nightingale sings in night time even more. Glad dawn when all unite, one joyous throng, But still I need to hear my blackbird’s song ‘Don’t be sad, be glad! Be glad! Don’t be sad! Be glad! ‘Twas in my grief you met me with this song To teach me, e’en in pain, to sing along, And He who shares our loss does still draws near And sends him yet again our hearts to cheer ‘Don’t be sad! Be glad! Be glad! Don’t be sad! Be glad!’ Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
DINOSAUR Dinosaurs ruled the world It was dangerous Noisy rawrs echo Omnivores ate berries and bugs Some dinosaurs ate each other And herbivores ate plants Up in the sky a meteor came Run away dinosaurs! Jacob Floyd (aged 8), Porthcawl
SWINGS AND ROUNDABOUTS Those swings and roundabouts of life, They lift you high, they throw you down. Unbidden waves emotions toss, Some make you smile, some make you frown. As time goes by those feelings fade, As new thoughts take their place. Nurture all those happy ones, Keep a smile upon your face. Keep the bad ones locked away, You know you really should. Don’t let them back into your life, Banish them for good.

SPRING IN MY GARDEN My garden in spring, such a beautiful thing. Where flowers bloom and garden birds sing. Love my little rockery with the two watermills, A pretty water feature surrounded by daffodils. Hedges need trimming and lawns need mowing, A new area prepared and ready for sowing Have a Patio area all decked out , Where a chilled glass awaits with a bottle of stout At night so bright with solar lights, That lights up my lawn from dusk til dawn. There is a robin and wren that fight now and then, Where back at the bird bath they become friend again. There are busy bees and butterflies, Busy collecting nectar under sunny blue skies Nature in your backyard doing it’s own thing, How I love my garden. My garden in spring. Jeff Evans, Pyle

FEATURES THE ROTARY BENCH In 2004, Porthcawl Rotary club decided to mark the occasion of the birth of the Rotary movement held in Chicago on the 23rd of February 1905 by presenting a bench to the people of Porthcawl. It was decided to locate the bench near the Atlantic Hotel, which has been home to the Porthcawl Rotary Club for many years. Therefore, on the 23rd of February 2005, 100 years after the first meeting, the late Reverend Peter Jones and the President Elect installed the bench in its present location, Ron Jones aided by the late John Williams MBE. A plaque commemorating the Centenary of Rotary International was also fixed in position. In August 2020 our club became 70 years old and we decided to commission two new plaques for the bench. One commemorates Arthur Rees our first president and Anne Jarrett our first female member of the Club in 1994. John Richardson restored the bench to its former glory. The bench is located in the building, housing the pumping station, looking out to sea. If you would like to know more about Rotary and its activities please contact Jeff Perren at jeff@perrenpartners.co.uk Rtn Robert Lee

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL In March we logged and monitored 86 commercial vessels, 455 leisure, 1 military and 19 other types. 291 hours watchkeeping were carried out, with our hours increasing from a 9 hour shift at the start of the month to 12 hours by the end. We dealt with 5 logged incidents and monitored a further 19. With the lifting of local Covid restrictions there was an immediate increase in water-borne and coastal activity, with surf and kitesurf schools reopening and the marina open once again for leisure traffic. We held our first (Covid-compliant) bucket collection along Porthcawl seafront in early April, our first fundraising event for well over a year. We would like to thank all who contributed to what turned out to be a successful two days! Our fundraising efforts rely entirely on the continuing generosity and goodwill of the local community, together with the efforts of the NCI members, their families and friends. We receive no assistance from the Government and rely entirely upon donations and money raised by our own NCI watchkeepers. All proceeds go towards equipping and running the lookout. We are grateful for your support and to those businesses that kindly host our donation tins. Nick Weedon, Media Officer Porthcawl NCI
PORTHCAWL LIONS We thank the 204 runners who joined in our Easter Weekend fun run and helped to raise nearly £1000 for our charities - local causes like the food bank, KPCY, young carers. And thanks to the organisers in Porthcawl Runners also supporting local causes. We hope soon to organise a Porthcawl in bloom competition and a variation (to ensure distancing) on our annual Sandcastle Competition. Keep an eye our website, or share ideas or best of all join us as we look forward to meeting in person, resuming the activities which bring us together for the community, and enjoying each others company. Andrew Collier
PORTHCAWL U3A We are delighted to announce that some Groups have been given permission to arrange outdoor meetings in May and June (conditional on there being no reversal of the current advanced notice plans and Welsh Government Guidelines). Full details will be published to members in our newsletter and be available on our Facebook page. Meetings will be subject to masks, risk assessments and spacing conditions in place on the date of the meeting. We know our startup will be slow; there may not be many meetings in May and June as many groups, especially those that need to use equipment will be waiting, to be sure that there is to be no 3rd peak over the summer. They are hoping that September will bring the news that we can return indoors to our usual venues in our normal groups. As always stay safe, we will be back. Sally A Corbett, Chair Porthcawl U3A

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL At last, we managed to have a somewhat chilly committee meeting, with social distancing and covid precautions in place of course. Minutes from August were read out to remind us what went on last year, just as well because we did not remember! President Mary reported all that had been happening on the Zoom meetings at District level. She is pleased to be virtually attending the International Inner Wheel Conference from Jaipur on April 17th and has zoom training on the 14th on how to vote on the proposals. We look forward to her feedback. We are starting preparations for next year with plans for our handover/ belated birthday party and are so looking forward to the idea of coming back to events and monthly meetings. Let’s hope we are able to see them through. We wish those with May birthdays many happy returns. The residents of the group home thanked us for their Easter Eggs and card and we also bought the staff a box of chocolates too. Many of us will have had both vaccinations before long so perhaps things will get better soon. IW Sec

SOROPTIMISTS CELEBRATE EASTER Bridgend Soroptimists held a celebration ZOOM meeting on 24th March to mark Easter. Members took great pride in wearing the Easter Bonnets they had created and were joined by their Friendship link club from Usikaupunki in Finland. Both clubs related the seasonal customs observed in both countries exploring the meaning of Easter as a religious festival together with the symbolism of spring flowers heralding new life and the enjoyment of food and chocolate goodies after the restrictions of Lent. The club also delivered boxes of Easter treats to the group of elderly ladies who normally enjoy tea parties with us but we are currently unable to hold under Covid restrictions. Our recent Virtual Dog Show proved to be a great success with 100 entries and a sum in excess of £800 was raised for Wales Mental Health charities. A great fund raising achievement indeed in such difficult times and thanks to all taking part. Eileen Bayley, Publicity Officer
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hey folks! Well, we may soon be coming out of lockdown (-: No doubt there have been some benefits of lockdown, like some families have had more time together - but lockdown has also been very challenging too. When the Apostle Paul was in prison (his own lockdown) he wrote these amazing words, “I have learned to be content in any circumstance... whether in need, or if I have plenty...I have learned the secret of being content in every situation...for I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength (Philippians 4 v 11 - 13). The secret that Paul found was a deep seated peace through his relationship with Jesus, knowing that God loved him beyond comprehension and that the Holy Spirit could help him in every situation - giving him strength to face anything. That’s pretty amazing stuff! This is available for us all. In every circumstance of life we can know the help of the Holy Spirit. We just need to humbly reach out to him and ask. And keep asking. And ask again! Our asking for help will open the door to God’s amazing help and strength. NEIL HARVEY Through Christian Eyes

HISTORY WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE On 26 June 1944, the Gestapo trapped SOE agent Yvonne Baseden and seven of her colleagues in a cheese factory. They shot her organiser, Baron Gonzagues de St Genies, arrested Yvonne and interrogated her. War is brutal, but Yvonne’s story reminds us that war as practiced by the fascists plunged unacceptable levels of barbarity. By September, Yvonne was in the notorious Ravensbrück concentration camp. While at the camp, she became ill with tuberculosis and was transferred to the hospital where she remained until the closing days of the war when the Swedish Red Cross liberated the camp. After the war, the Allies arrested the SS and female Aufseherinnen guards at Ravensbrück. Between 1946 and 1948, sixteen of the accused were found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to death. In September 1955, Yvonne became the first regular subject of the BBC TV programme, ‘This is Your Life’, although later she shunned the limelight. Yvonne died at the age of 95 another example of the remarkable longevity of the surviving SOE female agents. In December 1932, Mr Skinner, Headmaster of the National School (Coop today), marched the children to Dock Street where they lined the road to greet the Prince of Wales, later to become Edward VIII, who was visiting Porthcawl to play golf. The Prince arrived accompanied by Randolph Hearst, the American newspaper millionaire and his mistress, Marion Davies the American film star. Apparently, the Prince was a guest at St Donats Castle, the Welsh home of Mr Hearst. Ceri Joseph
GEORGE CADOGAN MORGAN Following William Morgan last month we have his brother George Cadogan Morgan. Born in Bridgend in 1754, he attended Cowbridge Grammar School and Jesus College Oxford. A Unitarian Minister and noted amateur scientist he, published several scientific works. In July 1789, with a doctor friend and two of his pupils, he made a study trip to France. They were in a hotel in the centre of Paris during the civil unrest culminating in the storming of the Bastille prison, on July 14th. (It only held 7 prisoners - 4 forgers, 2 men charged with public immorality and a murder suspect.) Morgan wrote regular letters home to his wife and his uncle, the philosopher Dr Richard Price, describing the events as they unfolded, giving a real sense of what it was like to witness a turning point in history. A fervent Republican, he supported the French Revolution, being implacably opposed to inherited privilege and didn’t waiver even during the 1793 reign of terror. He died, aged 44 in 1798 having inhaled some toxic substance during a scientific experiment. His letters, with his son, Richard Price Morgan’s letters from America, were published as Travels in Revolutionary France & a Journey across America. Deadline date for the June issue is: Saturday 15th May In 1982, Mrs. Pat Sheen (1924-2014) and other members of Porthcawl Museum recorded reminiscences. Overtime, of course, memories can become distorted and validating some facts has proved difficult yet there is an element of truth in both these accounts. Colonel Wallace built the large stone house in Gordon Road, which now belongs to the Post Office. When Mrs. Wallace died (c 1930) she was buried at sea. A tug came from Cardiff and tied up at the Breakwater. The coffin was brought down to the tug in a motor hearse and the coffin carried on board, followed by a small group of people. The tug cast off and made out to sea. Mrs. Wallace wished to be buried at sea because she had been born at sea. 36 | seaside news

LEGAL CHANGES TO MARRIAGE SERVICES AND REGISTRATION COHABITATION AGREEMENTS EXPLAINED We often hear the term ‘common law spouse’, however that is not a legal status. You are either married (or in a civil partnership) or not. If a relationship breaks down, being a ‘common law’ wife or husband does not give you the right to claim against your expartner for maintenance or a share of their assets. However, it may be possible for a parent to make a claim on behalf of a child they continue to look after. When couples are intending to co-habit we advise them to consider preparing a cohabitation agreement. This agreement should provide financial protection for both parties to increase their sense of security and happiness within the relationship, and sadly in the event of the relationship breaking down. Financial issues are key to a cohabitation agreement. It should include: • What rights each partner has regarding property you live in, consideration will be given as to who owns the property or contributed more to its purchase price/mortgage, • Who owns other assets/ chattels/ furniture, savings, investments, • Who will continue to own the assets in the event of separation, • Who is responsible for any debts. • How expenses will be shared while you live together. • Where you have children, either jointly or with a previous partner, the cohabitation agreement should also address this. Some aspects may also need to be supported by legal documentation: for example, to ensure that your partner inherits in the event of your death, you should prepare Wills. A Cohabitation Agreement is a contract between you both. To be legally enforceable, it must have been made with the intention of having legal force during your co-habitation and in the event of separation, the agreement can say so. Even so, a Cohabitation Agreement may not be enforceable if it is unfair. To maximise the chances that it is enforceable, you and your partner should both take independent legal advice on the contents of the Agreement and if need be, negotiate the terms to ensure they are fair for both parties. If you get married (or register a civil partnership), your cohabitation agreement might be taken into account by the court if you later divorce (or dissolve your civil partnership). It is good practice to review your cohabitation agreement every five years, or whenever there are any major changes in your circumstances - in particular, when a child is born. In a register office, after the marriage ceremony, the happy couple pose while signing the register and guests can record this happy moment for posterity. However, this photo opportunity will no longer be available as of this month. In May 2021 there will be significant changes to the way a marriage is registered in England and Wales. Previously a register was signed as part of the ceremony and a marriage certificate was given to the couple at the end of the service. From 4th May, however, there will be no register to sign and instead the couple will sign a marriage schedule, which is a one-page document containing the details of the parties and all other information which is needed to complete the registration process. If you are marrying in a civil ceremony, the registrar will keep the marriage schedule and within seven days of the ceremony the details in it will be added to an electronic register at the register office. It is only then that the certificate will be available. After a religious ceremony, the marriage schedule will be sent to the register office within 21 days of the ceremony for entering onto the register as above. A significant change is that where previously a marriage certificate contained only the details of the father of each party, not the mother, the marriage schedule can contain details of mothers or even step parents. However, some elements remain the same, such as the requirement for each party to give notice of the marriage and the marriage ceremony will remain the same, it is only the registration which will change. These changes will make the ceremony feel different, and couples marrying in the next few weeks will be able to tell their grandchildren that they were at the forefront of change! YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I filed for divorce a month ago. My husband has told me that he has received the Acknowledgement of Service but refuses to complete it, what can I do? Answer: The Acknowledgement of Service is essentially a questionnaire that your spouse must complete once they receive the divorce Petition and file this with the Court. Depending on the reason you have relied on, such as 2 years’ separation with consent, the Court will require your spouse to confirm that he consents to the divorce so you can move forward and apply for the middle stage of the divorce, Decree Nisi. However, if you have filed for divorce on another fact such as unreasonable behaviour, which does not require the consent of your husband, you have options. If your husband has told you that he has received the Acknowledgement of Service by text, letter or email, you may apply to the Court for an application for deemed service. The Judge will consider if the correspondence you have provided is sufficient to allow you to proceed to Decree Nisi. If however, you do not have any correspondence that your husband has received the Acknowledgement of Service, you may
need to think about instructing a Process Server to physically serve your husband with the divorce Petition. The Server will provide you with an Affidavit of Service that you can file with the Court to prove that your husband has had sight of the Petition. In cases such as yours where there are complications with the divorce, it is important that you seek legal advice. Here at Melanie Lazarus & Co, we can assist and support you where necessary. FINANCE WHY ARE MORE PEOPLE CHOOSING LIFETIME MORTGAGES? As there is no evidence of income required it’s no surprise there has been a significant rise in the number of people over 55 using lifetime mortgages to release equity from their homes. Take for example clients of ours who wanted £30,000 for a new kitchen & bathroom but could not afford the repayments of £600 per month on a loan, they were able to release the funds from their house at a cost of £100 per month and then chose to have the payment added to the loan. Effectively the work was carried out without it having to eat into their retirement income. Others are paying off their Interest Only mortgages with Lifetime mortgages so they don’t have to downsize!. So what are the hard facts? Well gone are the days where you have to worry about the mortgage growing larger than the value of your home. Lenders now have to provide protection in the form of No Negative Equity Guarantees, which basically means the mortgage cannot increase beyond the value of your property and leave you homeless. Another major improvement is, you can draw funds in stages at different times for several needs so this flexibility means your funds last longer by not taking the maximum at outset. What also surprises a lot of our clients is the fact that interest rates offered by lifetime mortgage providers are surprisingly competitive and as good as mainstream lending. You also now have the option to lock in a certain percentage of your property value using the Guaranteed Inheritance option so if you wanted to protect some of you house value for your children you can! There are lots of different providers each with varying incentives so we can compare all of these for you to ensure you get the best deal out there. Just remember this form of capital raising isn’t for everyone, which is why you might want to see a specialist to discuss your individual circumstances. UP THAT HILL One of the more refreshing things I have noticed over the past year or so is the huge increase in the numbers of people making efforts to get themselves fitter, whether walking, cycling, or running. It’s great to see, and hopefully will continue once restrictions are eased and life returns to normality. The health benefits of exercise are well known, but did you know you can also be rewarded in other ways too? There are companies who will base their monthly premiums for life, critical illness and income protection covers on your activity levels, so it’s helping get your wallet healthier too! You can also pick up other benefits, such as discounts on gym membership, sports watches, trainers etc. Why not give me a call to see if they’d be suitable for you? On the subject of health, if you’ve taken the plunge and given up smoking, did you know that this can have a huge impact on your costs for these types of cover? Once you’ve given up nicotine for 12 months, you can often be classed as a non-smoker, and therefore should get non-smoker rates. Please get in touch if this applies to you. The savings you may make could be put to work 40 | seaside news

LATER LIFE LENDING Primarily, borrowers in later life may well have an interest-only mortgage, often ongoing for life or a defined period or age or a repayment mortgage that has now become unaffordable. The majority of schemes these days are incredibly flexible and will permit interest payments to be made and even ad hoc sums of money, both of which help to keep the debt virtually level rather than increasing. Where ad hoc payments are permitted without penalty, it could even mean that you are reducing the debt by making such additional payments, usually to a maximum of 10% per annum, although you often have to leave a small amount of balance within the plan . Some people took out plans some years back and have made no payments at all since payments of interest were not possible back then. We have just met with Mrs D, who took out a plan back in 2006, 15 years ago and at an interest rate of some 6.97%, which was competitive back then. She has made no payments at all and these have accrued, hence her debt is now much larger. She came back to us this week to see if a better rate could be obtained, as rates have fallen substantially and her house has increased massively in value over the last 15 years. The end result is that, based on her property value now, plus her now advanced age of 84years, we have managed get the rate down to circa 3.5% plus she is able to borrow additional monies to carry out some urgent repairs on the house, which she and her husband purchased back in the late 80s. Her daughters, who were involved in the initial discussions back in 2006, are absolutely delighted that Mum is now able to enjoy a far better arrangement than the current one, which now sees her outside of any early penalty clause – and the lower interest rate will ensure a greater amount of inheritance for the Family, so everyone gets to enjoy a great result all round. This could be YOU. If you have a later life / Equity Release plan, call us without delay – you could enjoy a better arrangement, just like Mrs D. GARDENING LALESTON GARDENING CLUB Our Club will be getting plants to members by pre order, Click & Collect service this year on the 8th May. This was decided to be the safest and most failsafe way to distribute plants whilst keeping members safe. Bedding plants should be kept in cold frames, greenhouses or under protection to ensure they are safe from the last frosts or cold sometimes experienced in May. The most usual and safest time to plant out tender plants is the end of May, so for many years I have made that around the time of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. Our Lawns are now demanding a weekly cut and weeds are needing regular attention. In the veg patch, earth up potatoes, get those bean sticks in, pea supports too. Thin direct sewn vegetables, pinch out growing points of broad beans as soon as beans start to form at the base of the plants, watch out for black fly attack. So much to do at this time of year, nurture the hanging baskets and containers, remember to feed as well as keeping them well watered. Remember to ventilate those greenhouses on warm days. Enjoy your Gardening and stay safe. Susan Ford
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Horticulturally, the month of May is opening night, homecoming and graduation day all rolled into one! (Tam Mossman). Thin out crops sown last month, such as beetroot and carrots, trouble is thinning out releases that lovely carrot smell that attracts the carrot fly, hopefully yours are planted in a raised bed as the carrot fly can only jump 60cm carrots are best planted with chives and garlic or in clumps amongst other veg, the poor little carrot fly is easily confused! Carrots need at least 1 inch of water a weeks, but beware, overwatering (or heavy rain) can result in forked roots and growth cracks, tricky business growing carrots but worth it! Talking of pests avoid introducing the vine weevil into your containers, knock new plants out of their pots and look for little white grubs, the adult weevil is seen rarely as they only come out at night (bit like today’s teenagers!) Plant runner beans this month (the most joyous of vegetables!) traditionally planted the same weekend as Chelsea flower show. Lily of the Valley is the flower for May, but did you know it is very poisonous, just two leaves can kill a child or pet, beautiful but deadly! Chris Early

ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Sisters On The Way Up! Nottage-based singing duo, The Osborne Sisters, haven’t let Covid put their musical careers on hold. They have been busy all year entertaining the public with a regular Sunday night stream via their YouTube and Facebook sites called “The Osborne Sisters”. They cover all styles of music with a different set every week, and have over 2,000 subscribers to the site. The girls are Eddylia, 18, and Scarlett, 15. Both are members of the National Youth Theatre, BYT and Performance House. They are also writing their own material and plan to pursue this dream into a full-time career. From what I’ve heard, they have the talent to go all the way, so check them out! And a big thanks to my old mate, Porthcawl legend Anthony Billboard Jones, for the info about the duo. Anthony, who was a top-class rugby player, hung up his boots to become an actor with a fair bit of success. He is now behind the camera, producing, directing and writing. I look forward to working with him soon. Next month, an exclusive review of Chartered Hurricane’s new album. Original guitarist Mark Jones will give me the rundown on the making of it. COR TABERNACL BRIDGEND Cor Tabernacl Bridgend have held their A.G.M. for 2021. This meeting was held electronically due to Coronavirus restrictions but a total of 28 choristers were able to join in via Zoom. Richard Logan (Chair) welcomed members and began by confirming how the pandemic had affected our choir and concerts since last March. Over the last few months we have been joining together via Zoom to resume our practices albeit from our own homes. This shows the commitment of our choristers and in particular our Musical Director, Matthew Nash for arranging and supporting this. We all look forward to the ease in restrictions, which will allow us to meet up once more and plan for future concerts. Gwyn Phillips (Treasurer) gave an update on the present finances but was sad to say that obviously lockdown has prevented the generation of any income. After discussion all committee members agreed to remain in post for 2021 and Tanneke Berwick offered to rejoin the committee after a short break. We are now keen to encourage new singers to move forward with new music for forthcoming concerts. If you are interested please contact Richard Logan by email – drskin79@hotmail.com

Filming has resumed on the Llandow Air Disaster production – March and April were busy months, capturing scenes in and around the villages of Sigingstone, where the aircraft crashed, and Llandow, where the old RAF aerodrome was situated. The accident happened on 12th March 1950, and I was anxious to show the countryside with a similar wintry appearance – although the day of the crash was actually fine and sunny. Research continues to take up a lot of my time because there are several unknown factors involved in this story. The most difficult task has been that of finding out more about the pilot, Captain Denis Parsons, who died in the crash along with 79 other people, including the rest of his crew. I have had to delve deeply into the past and search through a lot of official records. Fortunately, I have been greatly assisted by members of 158 Squadron Association, initially believing that Captain Parsons had served in that squadron during the Second World War. 44 | seaside news

PORTHCAWL TOWN AFC NEWS Naturally topics are dominated by firstly the sad irresponsible vandalism of our newly installed stand seats, but subsequently this was overshadowed by the absolutely fantastic support from members and the townsfolk of Porthcawl! On the morning of the 18th of February, a committee member undertaking some general maintenance discovered the well documented destruction of some of our new seats. After some consideration, a post on social media was published. What followed was truly amazing! Prompted by several local members of the public, a Go Fund page was launched with the aim of hopefully raising enough money to secure our stand and keep the vandals at bay. Just shy of £4,000 later - this amazing total was raised, due to the generosity of our wonderful sponsors and the fantastic people of Porthcawl. Initially the plan was to purchase and install some shutters to section off said seats, with the considerable financial and expert advice of Steve Atkinson at Garage Doors Repaired Ltd. Unfortunately, due to some technical problems and ridiculous stumbling blocks put in our way (plus the cost far more than anticipated), we have had to look for an alternative security measure and are considering providing an additional security fence to stop vandals getting near the stand. This coupled with a magnificent gesture from CCTV expert installer Ben Norris of Premium CCTV and Alarms, who offered to install a high tech CCTV system around the premises FREE OF CHARGE should ensure all our hard efforts this last 10months will be safe and protected. Update on these proposals will be in next months Seaside News. Also, with restrictions lowering we are hoping to get the players out on the pitches doing what they’ve all been desperate to do, playing for the Towns Football club! The committee wishes to thank each and every one of you for all the support and generosity you have shown us, it makes all the hours of hard work worthwhile. PTAFC Committee
