LETTERS TOILETS AT REST BAY Dear Editor, Have any other readers noticed how disgraceful the outside toilets are at the new much celebrated Watersports Centre at Rest Bay, Porthcawl? If so, please make your observations known. On a recent visit (an ordinary Friday @ 11am, so not even the end of the day), there was yet again a long and very slow moving queue to use these facilities. The reason for this turned out to be the extended length of time each cubicle was in use by many surfers changing into or out of their wetsuits instead of people just using the toilets. Now I do not for a second blame the surfers, it is not their fault. I suggest however, a more efficient system would be to provide surfers with a completely independent changing facility with its own toilet separate to the public toilet cubicles and then prohibit the use of the toilets as changing facilities. As is, these are not fit for purpose. Also, due to the almost permanent queue leading to the toilets, it is not possible for surfers to use the outside shower facilities should they want to due to the queuing crowd. Also, with surfers changing in the cubicles the floors are permanently, excessively wet and sandy. The anti-bac gel dispensers on the walls outside the cubicles were all u/s, even given the c19 status we are still in. The soap dispensers in the cubicles were also all empty. One of the toilet’s flush functions did not work and the handle even came out of the wall. And lastly, the toilets and basins themselves were utterly filthy (photos taken if required as proof), with accumulations of all sorts, which I challenge anybody to claim was not long standing dirt/dust/detritus built up over multiple days. There is absolutely no way those toilets are being cleaned daily. I was not able to establish in fairness who is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of these facilities, be it a private business or BCBC. However, either way, why was so much money and effort spent on such a special facility which is part of a drive to attract and impress visitors to the area, only to disgrace ourselves in such a simple, basic and fundamental but spectacular way as to not bother to maintain the most basic cleanliness standards? I know other people feel the same, I heard as much during my visit, but we have to voice these concerns to enable the right people to take action. Lisa Jones, Kenfig Hill
ARE YOU A WELSH SPEAKER LIVING IN CARE? Dear Editor, Hiraeth is a research project in the Centre for Innovative Ageing in Swansea University, looking at the experience of older Welsh speakers living in care. Whilst many Welsh speakers may also speak English, their confidence in the language might not be as strong and conditions such as Dementia might affect which language they use. Sharing a language can make it easier for friendships to form and for people to develop relationships of trust with those caring for them. This research aims to understand how and when language matters in the day-to-day life of older Welsh speakers in care. As part of the project we are looking for Welsh speakers living in care, to be interviewed regarding their relationship with the language and to understand what opportunities there are for 8 | seaside news
Have your say info@seasidenews.co.uk them to use Welsh in their current home. Interviews will be informal and can be conducted in Welsh, English or both. If you are a Welsh speaker living in a care home and are interested in taking part, please get in touch. If your loved one speaks Welsh and lives in a care home or if you work in a care home and want to know more, please also contact me on 07468 985861 or on hiraethcymru@gmail.com. SALT LAKE DEVELOPMENT Dear Editor, Once again, our MP Dr Jamie Wallis has decided that the ‘divide and rule’ mentality of the current Conservative UK government is the way forward when addressing local issues. In the February issue of Seaside News, he mistakenly laid the loss of a bus service to Ton Kenfig at the Welsh Labour government’s and BCBC’s doors. In April’s Seaside News he targeted car owners as part of his ‘divide and rule’ strategy, suggesting that BCBC is ignoring the issue of car parking spaces and electric car infrastructure as part of the Salt Lake regeneration project. A simple internet search shows that as part of the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal, £2.87m has been set aside for installing electric vehicle charging points in a range of public places across the region, including the Salt Lake development. Furthermore, the Council has recently approved plans for a new a multi-storey car park on Hillsboro Place, in addition to planning a new four-bay bus terminus as part of the Metrolink. The aim is to enhance public transport links with Pyle train station and the wider South Wales Metro network. So, it seems to me that BCBC is seeking to be inclusive for those using cars, public transport and electric vehicles. Rather than ‘divide and rule’ tactics, I think it’s important that as our MP, Dr Wallis focuses on getting his facts right and working with the Council on important local projects. Mark Worrall, Porthcawl
CROSSING CEMETERY ROAD Dear Editor, Isn’t about time our local Council put a speed limit for cars on Cemetery Road into Porthcawl? Not one driver goes less than 50 miles per hour. To visit the cemetery is ridiculous. Nottage people have to cross the road to the pavement on the other side and wait ages before there is a gap in the traffic and then run across. It’s the same walking back. One cheeky driver had the nerve to beep his horn at me while I was trying to walk tightly to the left-hand side, there again no pavement. Look out summer traffic. BOOK OF THE MONTH The Heron’s Cry by Ann Cleeves The Heron’s Cry is the second book in Ann Cleeves’ Two Rivers crime series featuring Detective Matthew Venn. North Devon is enjoying a rare hot summer with tourists flocking to its coastline. Detective Matthew Venn is called out to a rural crime scene at the home of a group of artists. When he arrives there, he finds an elaborately staged murder - Dr Nigel Yeo has been fatally stabbed. His daughter Eve, one of the resident artists, is a glass blower, and the murder weapon is a shard from one of her broken vases. Dr Yeo seems an unlikely murder victim, a public servant, beloved by his daughter. Matthew is unnerved though, to discover that Eve is a close friend of Jonathan, his husband. Soon another body is found, killed in a similar fashion. Matthew finds himself treading carefully through the lies that fester at the heart of his community and a case that is dangerously close to home. HISTORY THE OLD PORTHCAWL POLICE STATION Part 3
From the late 1940’s onwards life in Porthcawl Police Station became mainly concerned with local crimes. The police station itself suffered damage in 1948, when within six months two drunken men had smashed 12 panes of glass between them in the cells. Car chases were a feature over the Sand dunes, whilst PC Brinley Thomas was assaulted outside the Newton Hotel whilst apprehending a musician for “begging and gathering alms.” John Street also was a focus of attention, as the thoroughfare had not been built to cope with two-way traffic. Cars were directed to park on only one side of the street on alternate days. Yet in 1953 a green van parked 4 ft from the kerb caused an hour-long traffic jam, which included six buses including the Cardiff bus, which was already 45 minutes late! By the 1960’s the station was proving to be too small, to cater for the increasing population and holidaymakers. In 1973, it was sold to the Ogwr Borough Council. A new police station was built at the top of John Street and Porthcawl Museum began life in three rooms on the ground floor of the Old Porthcawl Police Station. Ceri Joseph
PORTHCAWL MUSEUM RE-OPENS
Following all the hard work carried out by the museums volunteers, Porthcawl Museum re opened its doors on April 2nd. Formally opened by Porthcawl town council Mayor Cllr Tracy Hill. After the opening Tracy and other guests viewed the new 14 | seaside news
exhibitions with the museum chairman Paul Joseph before enjoying tea, coffee and home made cakes. The new exhibition’s include some of the never before seen collection of Victorian costume and a new exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of the Falklands war. The museum was pleased to be presented by the London Mint Historian Justin Robinson, a replica set of medals awarded following the Falklands conflict. They comprise the Victoria Cross, the George Cross and the Falklands South Atlantic War Medal with rosette. These were produced and donated by The London Mint with a collection of Falkland Island coins from 1982, also a framed sheet of stamps issued by Argentina during the conflict in 1982. These were over-stamped with the words “Las Malvinas Son Argentinas” and brought to the post office in Port Stanley. However the inhabitants of the islands refused to use them. The fact that the stamps haven’t been used is a testament to the courage and resolve of the islanders to resist their occupation. The museum will now be open Wednesday, Friday & Saturday from 11am to 3pm.
MEET MY ANCESTORS Samuel Axe, my 5 x great grandfather, the son of William Axe and Ann, was baptised on 14 April 1771 at St Alfege Church, Greenwich. Samuel married Grace Austin (1786–1823) on 22 September 1803 at St Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London and the couple lived in Hoxton, Middlesex where they produced eight children, including my direct ancestor, Jane Esther Axe, an educated woman and the executrix of Samuel’s will. Various documents describe Samuel as a ‘bricklayer’. In the first half of the nineteenth century a bricklayer was a property developer, someone who designed and constructed houses. These houses could range from humble dwellings to huge city projects. Samuel’s projects placed him amongst the ‘elite’, someone eligible to vote. Although a successful property developer, it would appear that all was not well with Samuel’s marriage because on 21 June 1816 Maria Hammont, single woman, petitioned the parish with the claim that ‘Samuel Axe, bricklayer of Hoxton Town, gained carnal knowledge of her body.’ Maria had given birth to a bastard female on 12 May 1815 at her mother’s house in Hoxton Fields. The outcome of her petition was not recorded. However, Samuel was a wealthy man so hopefully he supported his child. Hannah Howe, international bestselling author https://hannah-howe.com

ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I was sad to hear that the Newton Beer and Music Festival has come to the end of its run. It’s been a mainstay in music fans’ diaries every August Bank Holiday where it was always well organised and had a good selection of great local bands. My minders and myself never missed it over the last several years so we will have to make new plans! Event organiser Steve Maitland Thomas said a lot of his team that helped him stage the festival are no longer available – no doubt two years of lockdown hasn’t helped either. Having put on festivals and even road races, I know the huge amount of organisation that goes into it. Steve, as I’ve said before, does more for Porthcawl town than anybody and I wish him all the best. It’s been good to see Bridgend’s Funeral For A Friend back after a few years’ hiatus – they’ve just completed a sell-out UK Tour. They are probably the only group I don’t know personally. I’m sure I must have locked horns with them on the road when I was touring, or when I had my regular radio show. Looking forward to the nice summer weather ahead, and attending live music at the local pubs. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Picture: Stag Marks
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
One fine day at the beginning of April, I boarded a small helicopter at Cardiff Heliport with my camera. The preparations were all made: the door of the Robinson R44 had been removed to give the camera lens a broad unobstructed view, I had put on a safely harness to make sure that I didn’t fall out, and sat beside Dan the pilot with a firm grip on the camera. There was no question of having a mount for it; it would have to be operated handheld. We took off, hovered briefly to make sure that all was well and that the wind was not going to cause a problem, then set off towards Llandow in the Vale of Glamorgan at a height of 1,200ft to get aerial shots of the old aerodrome for my ‘Llandow Air Disaster’ production. There were clouds in the sky, but luckily every shot was bathed in glorious sunshine, as it was on the day 16 | seaside news

POEMS VICTORY: A POEM FOR VE DAY I can’t believe this mystic news, This must be some horrid ruse, The Second World War is finally over, Sophie, I will soon see you, and not in some military Rover. Remembering you makes me smile, The sight of your crystal-clear eyes and chic hairstyle, To me you have always been gorgeous, And your kind heart is simply enormous. I cannot wait to see you again, But first I must exit the lion’s den, Your love has ever stayed with me, Along with our lovely home in Tennessee. Remembering Normandy makes me shiver, And the bloody battle at the Rhine river, But I will always have you, And forever we shall remain true. Our great battles should not be ignored, For we defeated the Nazi tyrant and his horde, Now, all I crave is some peace, As well as the peoples’ happiness to increase. It’s time to rebuild, To remember those the Nazi’s have killed, We have done our fateful duty, Now our world must return to its former beauty. Rhys Jones (aged 14), North Cornelly
WAKE UP CALL Lazy bones and lazy mind. Why is it that I always find The morning call that sounds at me Exaggerates low energy? The bleep is loud or so it seems As it pulls me sharply from my dreams. But at any other time of day It sounds so quiet, so far away. Weekend wake ups are best of all, The songs of the birds are my call. How nice it would be to wake the way Nature intended every day. SMUGGLERS COVE
NO GRAVEN IMAGE
Tides white-foaming and dashing, Send waves loud-surging and smashing, Around the sandy-white bay. There where the sea-winds go lashing, And the surf is grey and loud-crashing, The smugglers gold-heavy chest lay. In a cove ‘neath a cliff with grass growing, Hollowed deep with sea-waves greyfoaming, Where the rocks, sea-slimed, are serried, And none would dare go rowing, Where the wind wild-shrieking is blowing, The smugglers chest lies buried. Down went the old ship deep-sinking, Down went all hands deep-drinking, To sandy depths unseen, Where is an end to all thought and thinking, Loud-feasting, and fighting and drinking, And the seaweed is tall-growing and green. ‘Round the cove where sea-birds go soaring, Where foam from the sea-spray is falling, And caverns echo with sighs, There waves go swelling and pouring, And tides like thunder go roaring, The smugglers chest still lies. Dafydd Matthews, North Cornelly
What skills describe the glory of One Who made man from the dust of the earth? By the word of his power called forth moon, stars and sun, Each sphere of infinite worth.
SAY HELLO, SAY GOODBYE Say goodbye to Yesterday’s song. Thrilling memories where I learn to belong, Their sweet notes echo nocturnal paths along. Farewell as I awake, in gloomy contemplation Of tears, laughter and dreams, Hello to Hopes for the Future and Life’s custard creams, Under pale morning skies, amidst the birdsong of Spring. Hello to new Life and the joys it may bring. Hello and goodbye to friends long ago, Hello to new music on my DAB radio. Goodbye long and lonely hours Goodbye to all the cold Spring flowers, Goodbye past Loves and Time’s fleeting glances, You played all your cards and I took my chances. Hello again to April’s soothing showers, Nature’s gentle footsteps that wind through Faerie bowers. Sally Richards, Porthcawl
Then why should we seek by our skills to describe A God greater than all we desire, With metal you hid in the bowels of the earth To form a god who comes out of the fire? Know that your Maker may not be defined By skills that to you he has given For only through Christ can his glory be known As we enter the Kingdom of heaven Then may we not think of our God as too small Or shrink him to what we desire But with trembling and awe draw near through the Son And find him who’s revealed in the fire. [Exodus 20: 4-6] Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
WORRY YES? WORRY NO? Worry yes, worry no, Which is it to be? We need to ban this horrid word, From our vocabulary. Worry little, worry lots, you need to make a choice, Just don’t forget that time won’t wait, So listen to its voice. Did you yesterday? Did you today? Did you worry last week too? Did you let the worry take over? You must stop it; it’s not hard to do. There’s no-one makes you worry, It’s really all down to you, The stress from worry can make you sick. Is that what you want to do? So stamp the worry into lots of pieces, Then ground it into dust, Wake up tomorrow all refreshed, You really know you must. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

CHECK YOUR HEART AFTER COVID
As I type this the weather is gorgeous Spring is definitely on its way and I’ve just had the most fantastic time at the musical event which the Porthcawl Lions put on for us. It was absolutely awesome. I came away from there with a big smile on my face that lasted well into the night I could not sleep I was that hyped up. There were songs from West Park School Choir, they were fab, then it was Porthcawl Comprehensive School performing extracts from their up and coming show Legally Blond so, good and what a talented bunch of teenagers. Then there was a choir called Sounds Familiar, they just blew me away they did a really emotional dedication to the people of the Ukraine. Gorgeous. Then last but by no means least we had the Porthcawl Community Orchestra. Mind blown. They were just fantastic. I would like to thank all those who came and paid tickets to the event, to The Hi-Tide to all the performers but mostly to Gloria and the rest of the Porthcawl Lions for doing it for us in the first place. It was fantastic. They raised a huge £1,000 which will help us massively. If you know anyone who is finding life a struggle whilst they are going through treatment for Cancer, please do point them in our direction. Finally, please do follow us on all social media platforms and remember we help those who are finding life a struggle financially whilst going through treatment for Cancer. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees
Millions of people have caught Corona virus in the UK and many of those have been unfortunate enough to develop long Covid as a result. But a new study has found that catching the virus could also put you at risk of developing serious cardiovascular health conditions. These include a stroke, heart failure, angina and cardiac arrest, among other conditions. New research in Nature Medicine warns that catching the virus could also put you at risk of developing cardiovascular conditions. It was found that people who had Covid faced a 72% higher risk of heart failure after 12 months, while around 45 more people per 1,000 (4.5%) went on to develop any of the conditions, compared to those who were uninfected. Sharon Owen, Calon Hearts Charity Director, said, “This news in Nature Medicine reinforces Calon Hearts’ campaign for heartscreening to be more widely available. We hope that our Health Minister at the Welsh Parliament who previously rejected our campaign for heart screening particularly for 11-35 yr olds who play sport for their school or community, will revisit our request. In the meantime, Calon Hearts will continue to offer heartscreening for people across South Wales.” Please contact Calon Heart Screening and Defibrillators if you would like to reserve your place. 02922 402670. www.heartscreening.wales
NEW BEGINNINGS What would you like to do that is not already in your routine? Maybe time for yourself, reading, playing, creating, chilling, meeting friends, only you know what is missing from your days. Listen to yourself not the suggestions or biddings of others. Find the interests that take you to your happy place, goodness knows there are enough distractions to interrupt your peace and calm. Naturally, your life is probably very busy, filled with plans, lists, work, family, shopping… if you decide to do something for yourself, how do you find the time? Start with a few minutes each morning, when brushing your teeth or showering and, wonder what life would be like if you changed your routine just a little. Think about the things you do and people you meet and notice what brings an inner smile or a frown. This could well be the first time you have given this any thought, as our lives are so full. It can be hard to pause and reflect in the beginning. Take a long slow deep breath in and gently let it go slowly and, at the same time, imagine a slightly different routine for the weeks ahead and begin to visualise a new path opening up for you. There is no rush, the path will always be waiting, you just choose when to begin. Margaret Brown
LOW CARB DIET Low carb diets have been linked to several impressive health benefits. Research has shown that they’re particularly effective at reducing hunger and aiding weight loss. They’ve also been associated with decreased blood pressure and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, as well as increased HDL (good) cholesterol. What’s more, low carb diets have been found to improve blood sugar control in those with type 2 diabetes and typically provide less than 130 grams of carbs per day, while very low carb diets typically provide 20–50 grams of carbs per day. However, some very low carb diets can be low in fiber, a nutrient that’s important for digestive, heart, and gut health. Low Carb foods include: Avocado, Almonds, Blackberries, Raspberries, Cauliflower, Broccoli and Asparagus. Taken from: www.healthline.com/nutrition Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

NEWS KEY ROLE PLAYED BY PHARMACISTS As a retired doctor, I have experience of the valuable but often unsung work done by our community pharmacists. Throughout Wales, pharmacies provide places where people can get advice on their health issues. Their value was obvious during the Covid pandemic. But this resource is one that is underused. Welsh Conservatives have now launched a campaign to publicise and enhance the role of community pharmacists at a time when our hospitals and surgeries are facing huge increases in those seeking treatment. Going to your pharmacy may be the most sensible first step for many. If it is not suitable, pharmacists will quickly re-direct patients to their GP or to the hospital. It is estimated that 11,000 consultations take place every day at pharmacies across Wales and that 86 per cent are dealt with there and then. This saves 35,000 surgery consultations a week and a further 2,000 hospital visits. I want Welsh Government to reduce the bureaucracy around access to medical records and to speed up the introduction of e-prescriptions. Let’s also ensure that there is more training available for pharmacy staff to give them the skills they need. DR ALTAF HUSSAIN Regional Senedd Member

Email us your views info@seasidenews.co.uk across Bridgend and Porthcawl, as well as a £9 million fund to establish a holiday scheme for carers of all ages to access respite from their caring responsibilities. The Welsh Government are launching these initiatives after a survey found nearly half of unpaid carers had to use personal savings and give up work or study to care, while more than half had to give up on hobbies or personal interests because of their caring role. The payment and holiday fund will benefit the most vulnerable unpaid carers across Bridgend and Porthcawl, who frequently care for the longest and are often on the lowest incomes. Carers have dedicated their lives to helping the most vulnerable over the last year and the recognition of their contribution to Wales’ health and social care system is a positive step by the Welsh Government. If you need any further support or advice on accessing the payment or holiday scheme, please email me at sarah.murphy@senedd.wales SARAH MURPHY MS Member of the Senedd for Bridgend
SEWAGE POLLUTION THREATENS OUR BEACHES I am calling on the Welsh Labour Government to bring in measures to tackle untreated sewage discharges similar to plans already announced by the UK Conservative Government for England. Constituents are rightly concerned about the pollution this causes to our rivers and also to the quality of our seawater. Poor water quality in Porthcawl would have a massive adverse effect on tourism and the jobs that depend on it. Wales has a largely Victorian sewage system, which overflows during periods of heavy rainfall. Over the past year, raw sewage was dumped into Welsh waterways more than 100,000 times and that’s totally unacceptable. Nobody wants to see pollution on this scale and I am calling on the Welsh Government to use some of the extra funding of £2.5 billion it has received on top of its block grant of £15 billion. In England, water companies will face strict limits on when they are able to use storm overflows and a plan will be implemented which will reduce discharges by 80 per cent in time. I am backing my Welsh Conservative colleagues in the Senedd who are calling for similar action now. We need deeds and not words. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
We are absolutely delighted to announce the summer term will see the long-awaited return of our school show after a two-year absence. When the curtain came down on Sister Act in January 2020, little did we all know about what was ahead of us! Thankfully, because of the timings, we have only actually missed our 2021 show, and our usual January show this year has been rescheduled towards the end of term, after the pupils’ examinations. We are very excited to announce that ‘Legally Blonde’ will be staged at the Grand Pavilion from 4th – 7th July 2022 and tickets will go on sale on in early May. The Sixth Form Interact Group have been busy at school recently, meeting up with members of the Porthcawl Rotary Club and also running an Easter raffle, which raised £126 for local charities. Many congratulations to Will Morris in 7HS who won an impressive array of chocolate! Congratulations to Cari Wilson on winning the Senior Eisteddfod and to Finty Kehoe for winning the Senior Welsh Chair. We are looking forward to celebrating more of our pupils’ many achievements at a presentation ceremony in school early in the summer term. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher

In conjunction with The Wellbeing Hub, we aim to equip our staff and parents with knowledge, understanding and strategies, so that they can support our pupils.” Since the pandemic, The Wellbeing Hub has seen a rising demand from parents and schools for guidance and training on understanding and meeting the social and emotional needs of young people. The Wellbeing Hub, which includes access for pupils aged 10+, is currently impacting more than 78,000 pupils in over 100 schools across the UK. It’s been a busy few weeks of fundraising here at Bryntirion and a massive thank you goes out to our pupils and families for helping us to support some worthwhile causes! The School Council recently collected £1300 from tutor groups for the British Red Cross to help support the DEC Ukraine Fund. As a school, we have developed a strong link with Velindre Cancer Centre, with Mr Rowe recently being made an Ambassador, and as a result, we have taken part in different fundraising activities to support the charity over the course of the year. In February, we raised £1000 by wearing red to school. Our Year 9 pupils are currently involved in the “Victory for Velindre” Enterprise and Employability Challenge and so far, they have raised a staggering £3500 by working in small teams to develop a business concept for a new product or service. Mr Rowe and Mr Shell will be cycling 390km in 3 days, conquering Majorca’s epic mountain climbs and descents, including the mighty Sa Calobra climbs as part of the Majorca Bike Ride in support of Velindre over the May bank holiday weekend. Good luck to them both! Mrs K Poole

FEATURES PORTHCAWL LIONS
After a very successful concert, Charter Night and a Coffee morning, we seem to be ‘up and moving’ again. A (hopefully) temporary set back is to our very popular Car Boot Sales which cannot take place at The Rugby Club this year (pitch replacement); we hope soon to have found a venue and way to carry on, but suggestions may still be welcome. Sadly no golf tournament this year for health reasons - which bring us on to our urgent need for energetic new members. To combat this we are organising a MEET THE LIONS OPEN EVENING - on Friday May 20th, 7.00pm at the YMCA in John Street. It is not just (or even mainly) about recruiting but explaining what we do especially in the community, helping needy folk and organisations, raising funds, enjoying each other’s company while keeping busy. Come along, share ideas, learn more Andrew Collier 01656 784939

ROTARY RESPONDS TO UKRAINE CRISIS
PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB At the Grove Golf Club the Porthcawl Stroke Club enjoyed a presentation talk by Mrs Pat Richards on Helen Beatrix Potter, children’s author and illustrator. Potter was born in number 2 Bolton Gardens, West Brompton, with her parents and brother; unfortunately the house was destroyed in the Blitz. What a delight that was, looking through those small children’s books, one being a favourite of mine The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Beatrix Potter wrote thirty books, the best known being her twenty-three children’s tales. Proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey in 1905; this is a village in the Lake District in the historic county of Lancashire. To preserve this unique countryside Potter bought additional farms. In 1913 at the age of 47, she married William Heelis, a respected local solicitor from Hawkshead. Potter died of on 22 December 1943 at her beloved home at the age of 77. Her books continue to sell throughout the world in many languages with her stories being retold in songs, films, ballet and animations. Anyone wishing to join the Porthcawl Stroke Club, please contact Chairman Keith Duggan & Vice Chairman Mary Duggan Telephone: 07484 250988/01656 773376. Meetings run every Wednesday afternoons, 2-4 pm. 30 | seaside news
It is a tragic and sad time for the people of Ukraine. At Rotary, we are deeply concerned by the devastating situation in Ukraine and the escalating loss of life and humanitarian hardship there. Rotary International recently gathered more than 40 Rotarian leaders from Ukraine and neighbouring countries and put plans in place for Rotary to respond and support the horrific and ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Rotary Porthcawl President Clive Edwards decided to organise a 2-day street collection in John Street in support of the Ukraine appeal. Members rallied to the Presidents call and over the 2 days, collected an amazing £4,750 from the people of Porthcawl. The Rotary Club then decided to support Ukraine via “The International Fellowship of Healthcare Professionals” who fundraise specifically medical aid for Ukraine frontline medical needs and guarantee 100% the funds will go there. Collaboration has also begun with ShelterBox, our global partner in disaster response, who is in direct contact with Rotarians in Eastern Europe. Rotary is also working with the Red Cross and the United Nations to ensure our efforts are complementary and coordinated. President Clive Edwards would like to thank everybody who was involved and donated. Well done! Rtn Robert Lee

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN PORTHCAWL HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be marked, celebrated and long commemorated around the world. Regardless of faith or nationality there can be few people who do not recognise the dedication and personal commitment made by this one woman to her country and her role. As part of Porthcawl’s celebration, Churches Together in Porthcawl is arranging a service of celebration and thanksgiving when the town can come together in one major act of worship. All the churches and all ages will be involved in the one presentation. Individual churches will, naturally, remember Her Majesty’s service to our nation within their own acts of worship. The combined churches service will be held in Trinity on Sunday 5th June at 3pm. Children are being invited to write about Her Majesty and read their items at the service, photographs will be screened, candles will be lit and prayers will be said. The service will be zoomed for those unable to be personally present; the link will be published nearer the day and published in the Gazette. Let us show our gratitude for the leadership, example and dedication of this remarkable lady. John Berry
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES In 1904 there was an incredible revival in Wales as the Holy Spirit swept across the nation - seeing about 250,000 people converted in a matter of months. This is the grace of God. The grace of God simply means that we cannot do anything to earn God’s love or forgiveness, but must receive it as a gift, by faith. This is how we get our initial contact with God, and it must also be the ongoing process of things in regards to our relationship with God. One of the marvellous things about this is that it goes against anyone’s religious efforts to justify themselves before God. No amount of good works will ever be enough to gain a relationship with God and a place in heaven. That is good news, because that takes the pressure off me to be good enough. We must simply respond by faith, to what Jesus has done on the cross, and then as God changes us from the inside out, we live a life that is God’s best for us. My prayer is that we all (Christians and non-Christians alike) understand more and more the wonderful grace of God. Respond and see how His grace changes you! Neil Harvey

FEATURES TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE
U3A OPEN DAY
Things are getting back to normal - whatever normal is these days. We are currently making four Carpentry Group kits for a project in Malawi. Carpentry kits remain our most popular so the tools for these tend to get used up quickly. We rely on your tool donations to keep us going so any carpentry tools particularly wood working vices, saws (not hard point), chisels, ‘G’ clamps and sliding bevels are in short supply. There are 46 tools in these kits so for this one project we are using 184 tools. We had our first sale outside Trinity Church for two years on 26Th of March and were very busy. For anyone who visited us I hope you got a good bargain as all items were sold at very reasonable prices. We hope to have more sales in the coming months so look out for the dates in Seaside News. We will soon be starting four more kits for Malawi; these will be 2 x Auto mechanics kits, 1x Bricklaying kit and 1 x Electrical wiring kit. If you have any tools for these kits, please contact John on 01656 786367. You can bring items to the workshop or we may be able to collect them. David Cook, Workshop Manager
Porthcawl u3a held a successful Open Day on Saturday 9th April in Trinity Church Hall. All 40 varied interest groups displayed photographs and information on the different activities available. Deputy mayor Mark Chegwen and his wife came along to view the displays and talk to group leaders and the committee. U3a volunteers served coffee and cake to members of the public, some of whom joined on the spot when they discovered how many subjects and opportunities were open to them. U3a members and leaders chatted to each other and potential members and all enjoyed the occasion. Carolyn Perren
PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Our promised speaker for last month was unable to come but we were lucky to have an excellent substitute in Annie Pelleschi, curator of the Dylan Thomas Museum and a well-known tour guide. She has spoken to the Prince of Wales so we were in good hands! She told us of the history of Nursery Rhymes all based on the political goings on at the time. Annie took us back to the 13th Century and Baa Baa Black Sheep, then to 15th Century and Hey Diddle, Diddle. We ended up in the 18th Century, Cromwell time with Pop Goes the Weasel! All the hidden meanings in the rhymes were explained in a most fascinating way! Chairman Helen gave us news of a tree we are going to plant for the Queens Jubilee, also our delayed birthday lunch will be on May 18th. Also looking forward to a garden party at Margam Orangery with Swansea Federation. This months meeting is on May 11th 2.0 p.m. at the Grove Golf Club when the speaker will be Joyce James on Agatha Christie. Do come and join us you will be most welcome! Dorothy Thomas 01656 772157

THE PROBUS CLUB OF PORTHCAWL Springtime is perhaps an appropriate time to record the purpose of this club, which was founded in 1980 by The Rotary Club of Porthcawl. The objective of the club is to provide for retired and semi-retired men living in the town and its surrounding area, a door to friendship with other men looking for social recreation and interest in local affairs. Recent topics taken by our excellent speakers visiting the club include the following: The incredible life of Dr. William Price, The Life and Times of Verdi, Tales of Wales, and St. Petersburg/The Hermitage. Future topics by speakers this year will include the following: NATO and its Parliament, Peru, Elephant Sanctuaries in Thailand, My time at a Kibbutz in Israel, and Ghostly Tales. Our ladies will be invited when topics are of special interest to them. If you would like more information about the speakers who will entertain us at our regular morning meetings on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month, at The Grove Golf Club. THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL TENOVUS CANCER CARE, PORTHCAWL President Gil has had a busy time just lately attending functions. She and other members went to Maesteg club’s coffee morning and along with Sue were lucky enough to win a raffle prize. She was also invited to go to the Lion’s dinner and the Rotary club’s evening meeting. In our last meeting we inducted a new member to our club. We wish Karen Dyke all the best for her time in Inner Wheel and hope she finds it rewarding. If anyone else is interested in finding out more about the Inner Wheel, please come along and meet us. We meet in the Grove on the first Tuesday of the month at 6.30pm; you will be made most welcome. Liz Jones
MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Spring has at last arrived and we met in our usual venue the Talbot Center Kenfig Hill our time is 2pm to 4pm. Katherin read out our minutes and Enid read out all the WI business. Our walking club and scrabble club is organised and this month we had a bring-and-buy table as well as our book club which is proving popular. This year for our outing in August was discussed and we are going to try and use DJ Thomas the members thought a trip to Ludlow would be just the ticket and if all goes well we will use them from now on. Two ladies Gaynor and Alison came to give us information on the Glamorgan show and to answer any questions we might have, the classes are very varied and several members were interested in submitting entries. It’s our AGM next month so no speaker but we’ll be there with tea and biscuits a warm welcome to new members and we’ll be waiting to show you all the WI has to offer. Christine Callaghan
We are certainly living in very difficult times, and as such we know how hard it can be to decide how, when or where to make charitable donations. Tenovus Cancer Care is Wales’s leading cancer charity and raises funds to support cancer patients and their families, funds cancer research and works to raise awareness of how to prevent cancer. Our shop in John Street, Porthcawl helps to raise money for cancer services in the community as well as supporting the upkeep of mobile units delivering chemotherapy treatment to rural areas. To enable us to continue this work, we need your help, so please consider us when doing your spring cleaning or having that wardrobe re-vamp. We urgently need donations of adult and child clothing, shoes, bags and accessories books, DVDs, bric-a-brac, toys etc. In addition, U.K. taxpayer who agree to allow Tenovus to claim Gift Aid on your donations, it means that the Taxman will pay our charity an extra 25p for every £1 raised from your goods. If you would like any more information, please call in or give us a ring on 01656 783778. Christine Beynon, Tenovus Volunteer

FINANCE GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUNDS Despite much progress Financial Advice tends to be a male dominated industry with a focus on men’s wealth. Too many women still put their financial future at risk by leaving their partners to handle the finances. There are many differences between men and women’s financial experiences and yet women’s need for advice is often greater than men. Despite this only 36% of women seek financial advice. When a client meets a financial advisor, they should look for someone who has empathy, shared experience, someone they can share their money worries with, without fear or ridicule or explanation and someone who understands their dreams and visions. Not to say a Male IFA cannot adopt this approach with success – the woman in need of advice may see it differently. Women as investors are generally more risk aware and prefer outcome and goal- based investing by focusing on the outcomes of their investment decisions. Due to this women should seek an adviser who uses this approach. Women face different pressures on their finances both from society in general and personal circumstances for example; The gender pay gap has not quite vanished and is much more evident once women start families. Gaps in working life will not only affect income but vastly reduce pension provision. Divorce rates are 42% Women may need expert planning when it comes to divorce and pension sharing orders, investment of assets received as part of divorce settlement and changing income needs. A staggering oversight is that 3 out of 5 divorces don’t even discuss pension sharing as part of settlements. On a positive note - The balance of wealth is shifting, mainly due to divorce and the fact that women outlive men. Women are realising that their financial needs are different to men and seek a more holistic and objective based approach to advice often offered through a female financial advisor. Don’t shy away from decisions that will have a major impact on you or your family, the legacy you want to leave and the causes you want to support. Taking steps now means you are preparing for the future.
way in excess of asking price rather than losing the intended purchase but maybe now we’ll see some common sense creep back in – everything has a cycle and seeing prices stabilising, even by a modest amount, can bring a sense of perspective back to the market. To assist purchasers, particularly the younger generation which is trying to get on the ladder, some lenders are now offering extended maximum mortgage terms and often with larger loanto-value, based of course on affordability. For those in retirement also, we’ve seen interest rates edging up a touch although people with older lifetime borrowing or equity release schemes can still potentially save thousands of pounds in interest by switching to lenders with much cheaper interest rates and offering the option of paying the interest and making overpayments of as much as 12% of the capital per annum without penalty, something which was unheard of just a couple of years back. With movement in the mortgage market seeing sometimes daily changes, we can assist you with our whole of market service. All you need to do is ask and we’ll help you find the best deals for first-time purchasers or take a look at your current arrangements if you’re older with ongoing mortgage needs. FEELING DEFLATED BY INFLATION? Rarely can a situation like the present have had greater significance, as far as most of us can remember. With Russia continuing its assault on Ukraine having set the tone, we see inflation spiralling on an upward trajectory probably no-one could have imagined just a few months ago. With the price of oil and gas scaling heights that are putting household budgets under enormous pressure, we are also seeing a slowdown in mortgage activity as lenders tighten criteria once more, hence making getting the right deal more difficult. Don’t get me wrong, there is still plenty of mortgage money available for those that tick all the boxes and with large numbers of people looking to build onto their current homes rather than settle for another property that may be proving elusive, this can only help in bringing prices down a touch. During the last twelve months we’ve seen a kind of bidding war between prospective purchasers, with some people paying 36 | seaside news

LEGAL AVOIDING ACCIDENTAL INHERITANCES
WHAT IS A DEPUTYSHIP ORDER? A deputyship order gives you (usually a close friend or family of the person who has lost capacity) the ability to make decisions on behalf of someone who has lost the capacity to care for and make decisions for themselves. You might apply for a deputyship order when there is no lasting power of attorney (or enduring power of attorney) in place. A Lasting Power of Attorney can only be granted if the donor is considered as having capacity. The lack of capacity may be because of any impairment of or disturbance in the functioning of the mind or brain, such as dementia or a stroke. The Court of Protection’s deputyship order will set out the deputy’s powers. The powers may relate, for example, to the person’s finances, property or accommodation (including where they live or whether they go into care), their medical treatment and other healthcare issues, and their personal welfare, eg: what clothes they wear, and anything needed for their general care and well-being. The powers given depend on the person’s needs. A deputy must be over 18 and is often a family member or friend, although anyone can apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed. Each deputy is assessed to see what level of supervision they need from the Office of the Public Guardian. Supervision fees are payable from the funds of the person lacking capacity. Supervision may involve ongoing support; a requirement to submit a report and accounts periodically; or a Court Visitor checking how the deputyship is being managed. The proposed deputy completes a set of application forms and a suitable practitioner (eg the patient’s doctor) completes a medical report. There is a fee payable for the medical report and an application fee is payable to the Court. The deputy has to complete a declaration document about themselves. You can employ a us to help you with the application and with your duties as a deputy (once appointed). Our fees can normally be recovered from the funds of the person lacking capacity. A deputyship ends automatically if the person lacking capacity recovers or dies. If the person becomes able to make their own decisions, the deputyship order stays in force until it expires or is discharged by another Court order. A deputy who cannot, or does not want to, remain a deputy must apply to the Court to have their order discharged. The Court can also discharge a deputy who it believes has acted improperly, eg not in the person’s best interests.

When you make a will, you may think that you have all eventualities covered, but by failing to check your pension policy and particularly the names of those you nominated as beneficiaries when you set up the pension, you are leaving yourself open to leaving a sum of money to someone you may not want to. Since 2015, it has been possible to pass on any unused pension money tax free. These days, most pensions are written into trust which means that they fall out of your estate when you die, and so may not pass to people you have named in your will. When you place your pension pot or an insurance policy into trust, you have to name a beneficiary to receive that fund. If you name your Partner for example, then separate at a later date and change your will to leave assets to your children, you may still find that your Partner would receive your pension monies. Therefore, it is prudent to check your policy and the identity of your chosen beneficiary. With the rise in the number of divorces, family structures are getting more complicated and so people are increasingly at risk of losing track of their pension and insurance plans, and of who will inherit them. It seems that anyone recently married, divorce, separated, bereaved or widowed is at risk of leaving an accidental legacy. Further, if your pension is not written into trust, it could form part of your estate and could be liable for inheritance tax. If this is the case, the money cannot be released until the tax is paid and the estate wound up. So, it is best to treat nomination forms like your will and update them after changes in lifestyle or personal circumstances.

GARDENING
Email your report info@seasidenews.co.uk
LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
May is such a busy month in the garden, but for fear of frost I don’t plant my bedding plants out until the end of the month. You may have already started your tomatoes etc off in the greenhouse, during this month don’t forget to shade and on warm days ventilate. It’s good to water early or late in the day and damp down the floor of the greenhouse to keep up the humidity. Lawns should be cut once a week now and high nitrogen feed can be applied to green up for the summer. Soft wood cuttings can be taken from shrubs, hydrangeas etc at this time of year, an economic benefit, and free plants always very welcome. Laleston Gardening Club will be holding it’s main plant sale on Saturday 7th May, opening at 10am. In case anyone isn’t aware we are at Cliff Cottage in the centre of the village next door to St David’s Parish Church. There will be a lovely selection of bedding plants and vegetable plants at very competitive prices so do come along, but be early to get the best choice. It’s been lovely to have events at the Club back to normal, the Committee have been thrilled to see our members back enjoying lectures, lunches and making good use of our well stocked shop. Susan Ford
“A beautiful garden in May is the very best that life can offer, it’s a bit like Christmas, everyday is a celebration!” (Monty Don) Weeds are in their element now! There is an old saying “one year’s weed is seven years seed” in other words seeds can go on germinating long after they are shed. Get your hoe out! Hoeing is not hard work; in fact it can be quite a pleasure (honest!). Hoeing also creates a sort of mulch; a layer of 2mm thick dries out trapping moisture in the soil, so doubly worth it! Plant up hanging baskets for glorious summer colour, shelter them until the danger of late frost has passed, then out they go! (better than her nextdoor’s I bet) It’s an idea to put few bits of broken plant pot in the bottom of your baskets to help drainage. When using supporting canes, put soft tops over the tips to prevent any eye injury, little yogurt pots are ideal! Plant out courgettes this month, they’re a bit like Marmite, you either love them of hate them! But did you know they are completely hypoallergenic, no one has ever been recorded as being allergic to courgettes! Chris Early

CONCERT FOR UKRAINE All Saints Church Porthcawl, 7pm ‘The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace’ This performance by The Augmented Mid Glamorgan Savoyards was inspired by the performance of the work in St. David’s Hall conducted by Karl Jenkins himself. ‘The Armed Man’, commissioned by the Royal Armouries for the Millennium, has emerged as the most popular of Karl Jenkins’ works. It reflects the ravages of war but finishes with the optimistic note that ‘BETTER IS PEACE THAN ALWAYS WAR’. Sadly, this message has not yet been learnt. All the proceeds from the concert will, therefore, be given to help the people of Ukraine. Please come along to help them. Tickets £10 or £15 may be obtained through telephone numbers 01656 85761 / 01656 653326, from members of the company or at the door.

Guide Dogs Cymru is calling on readers to walk 250,000 steps in May and raise vital funds for people with sight loss. Supporters all over Wales have signed up for the Walk Your Socks Off challenge to raise at least £125 – the cost of a starter kit for a new guide dog owner. In return, Guide Dogs will replace their worn-out socks with an exclusive blue-and-yellow pair. Ruth Evans, Community Fundraising Relationship Manager for Guide Dogs, said: “Walk Your Socks Off is the perfect challenge to help you have fun and keep active with your friends and family. You can do it anywhere, and our Facebook page has lots of top tips to help people rack up the steps. Looking for an alternative to walking? Why not try skipping or salsa? “By taking 250,000 steps during May and raising £125, you’ll help people living with sight loss to step out with confidence too. You can do it as an individual, a family or a team. When you sign up, you’ll receive your socks with a brand new design and, as you hit fundraising milestones, you’ll receive exciting rewards.” To get involved and sign up, visit https://givp.nl/e/57kAcdhN

LOCAL SURF REPORT Porthcawl Welsh Coast Surf Club WCSC - A few of our top young surfers headed down to Newquay last weekend for the Rip Curl grom search at Fistral. The surf was perfect surf conditions for our club members, which surfed brilliantly and had awesome results! Well done to 4th Tom O’Leary in the U14s Boys 7th Summer-Marie Moore U12s Girls 11th Coby Williams U14s Boys 12th Luca Owen U14s Boys. Also Good luck to Cieron David of Ogmore by Sea as he heads off to OZ with a 4 year Working and Surfing Visa with a job to go to on arrival. Surf has been great through Match and entering April with a lot of offshore breezes. I can remember complaining with others how the last 10 years seemed to throw us a lot of onshore poor surf conditions. It’s certainly been more offshores and better this last year or so. Also, I’m glad to report a Porpoise popping up about 5 yards in front of me when I was surfing Hardees Bay in Ogmore by Sea mid April. David Batten www.tuskasurf.co.uk
