THANK YOU PHIL FROM AN INJURED CYCLIST Dear Editor, I would like to use the Seaside news to thank ‘Phil’ for helping me immediately after I was involved in a cycling accident on 22nd September on the dual carriageway, in Porthcawl. I didn’t get any of his details so I hope he reads this. He went out of his way to stop, help me up off the road and take me to the Portway surgery and then take my bike home, while I waited for my wife to come to take me to A&E. What a lovely chap! The ladies and doctor at the surgery were also fantastic. No thanks however to the car that drove past me just before I fell, but didn’t bother to stop. The cause of the accident was branches/shrubs protruding into the nearside lane as can be seen in the picture. Since my letter to the Highways department, the shrubs have been extremely well cut back! I’m sure many will have noticed the change. This is swift action on behalf of Highways and may prevent further injuries, but I feel a little disappointed that there has been no letter back to me (at time of writing) to enquire about my recovery. Without a helmet, I may not have survived the fall. So, please all you cyclists, wear that lid! David Cartwright Porthcawl

SALT LAKE CAR PARK
REST BAY
Dear Editor, Once again this year has seen an increase in the number of visitors to Porthcawl by 10%. This increase also applies to the number of cars and coaches into the town which is very good news for the shops. However it is this increase in the number of cars that is creating serious traffic problems. Fortunately Salt Lake car park is able to cope with the hundreds of cars that arrive weekly and in the region of a thousand or so at bank holidays. In other words if it was not for Salt Lake car park, the town would be gridlocked but BCBC in conjunction with a third party wants to close the car park and turn Salt Lake into a building plot with hundreds of houses and flats on the site. This would turn Porthcawl into a ‘no go’ area for the motorist and equally have a disastrous effect on the tourist industry and the trade of the shops. Needless to say all the money that BCBC and the third party would obtain from the building on Salt Lake would go into their own coffers and not a penny would be spent on improvements for Porthcawl. Salt Lake is a prime spot with an open view of the sea. Driving into Porthcawl either via the Portway or Griffin Park, it is always wonderful to see the beautiful coast before you. This panoramic view would be lost forever with the building of the houses and flats. The seriousness of the situation can’t be overemphasised. Salt Lake can be improved by resurfacing, landscaping the perimeter, installing special water features, flowerbeds and possibly some trees. The proposal to transfer this car park from Salt Lake to Sandy Bay is farcical. What is ironic is that Salt Lake belongs to the people of Porthcawl by rights and the Porthcawl people must fight to keep it as a car park and to have a say in its usage in the future. John Jenkins, Porthcawl

DUPLICATE DOCUMENTS
BROADLANDS SUNRISE / SUNSET
Dear Editor, I live in the Bridgend area and was dismayed with yet another increase in council tax, this time 4.5%. Then a few weeks ago I had documents sent to me requesting details of the number of inhabitants in my house for voting registration. I read what I needed then completed the request online and put the documents into my recycling box. Sorting out my box I looked again at the documents and started to wonder as to the cost and to why I receive both the English and Welsh version. Having spent 28 years in the document creation industry I know how expensive this can be and I gave some thought as to the cost of printing, postage and disposal to council taxpayers. More to the point I wonder how many people actually need both language versions. Can anyone tell me how much it costs to produce and distribute these documents when clearly nobody actually needs to receive both languages? Can I suggest that the next time a circular like this is sent out that an added field be included asking in what language the householder would like future mailings to be received, Welsh; then no English version, English; then no Welsh version. A field could be included in all mailings offering us the choice to change language if so wished. This would cut printing and postage costs and save a lot of paper going into recycling. I’m sure that a database could quite easily distinguish which language version to send to each household. In these days of austerity many organisations are required to reduce costs. An example would be banks suggesting that customers use ‘on-line banking’ to replace hard copies being posted. So please someone out there tell me how much it costs to print and post documents in both languages and what percentage reads which language. We can then establish how much we can save by just sending out the document in the one chosen language. Am I the only one that thinks like this? John Mabbett Bridgend

NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS
I am very much looking forward to welcoming prospective parents and pupils to our Open Evening for Sixth Form students 2017. This takes place on 30th November at 6pm, and as usual, we welcome all families who are interested in coming to see what Porthcawl Comprehensive School has to offer, as well as those of existing pupils. New prospective families as well as parents of younger pupils, who might have missed our recent Open Evening for Year 7 pupils 2017, may arrange an appointment to meet staff and look around the school by calling 01656 774100. I would like to say a big thank you to all the pupils who volunteered recently to be part of our School Council. Places were over-subscribed and unfortunately we could not select everyone! Successful candidates were: Alina Biju, Taliesin Giess, Ffion Walmsley-Williams, Scarlett Jenkins, Kyran Hayes, Max Williams, Holly Sinclair, Daisy Brown, Conor Farrell-John, Ieuan Walmsley-Williams, James Powell, Lauren Ellis-Stretch and Caitlin Whiteley. Thank you, your contribution to school life is much appreciated and if you weren’t successful, please try again next year. Our School Show this year is ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ from 25th – 28th January 2017; rehearsals are well underway and tickets will go on sale at the beginning of December at the Grand Pavilion, 01656 815995. Before that however, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to anyone who would like to join us at our much celebrated annual Carol Service at All Saints Church at 7pm on 15th December. AFON Y FELIN NEWS We have had more good news this year, after jumping two colour categories, red straight to yellow, Bridgend County Borough Council tweeted “with more parents than ever wanting to send their children there, we’re proposing to increase @ AYFprimary’s capacity.” It’s fantastic to see that the last two years hard work by our head, staff, governors and the children has been acknowledged. Because of our increased numbers this year, we have decided we need a deputy head boy and girl, congratulations to the children chosen to fill these important roles. Our P.F.A. held a coffee morning for Macmillan and rose over £200! Thank you to the pupils who represented us at the Urdd Proclamation Parade in Bridgend, they marched through town holding our banner high, before some fun activities at Newbridge Fields. We raised awareness for Great Ormond Street Hospital, everybody dressed in silly clothing. Prizes were presented by Mrs Purcell, whose daughter Natalia visits the Seaside News | 16
We recently attended the Urdd celebrations in Bridgend and proudly marched under a fantastic banner created by our children. What a wonderful way to be part of the community and highlight the importance of the Welsh language and culture. We are also very pleased that a huge number of children took part in the summer library challenge, with most of the school being presented with certificates for their efforts in a special assembly. Finally we can report our Macmillan coffee morning was once again a huge success raising over £750 for this worthwhile cause. Well done everyone involved! Mrs A Thomas Head Teacher
CYNFFIG CELEBRATING AN INSPIRING START! Autumn is always an exciting time at Cynffig and this term has been inspiring! I was proud to welcome record numbers of parents and pupils to our Year 6 Open Evening; every department conveying the same basic principle; ‘we care’. Transition days including Folk Dancing in Welsh and Tapas in Spanish have also provided pupils with a flavour of their Cynffig learning journey ahead. In September pupils exercised their democratic right in our Student Parliament Elections. One hundred and thirty three pupils were nominated to run for Year Council whilst Ioan Humphries Year 12 was voted ‘Chair’. Cynffig joined the rest of Wales in celebrating Diwrnod Shwmae. Brecwast Bingo, a Wal Graffiti and our Twmpath ensured pupils thoroughly enjoyed what it is to be Welsh. Year 11 pupils Rebecca and Charlotte Coleman, Mali Llewellyn and Megan Stevens have made us proud in achieving the highest accolade in guiding – the ‘Baden Powell Award’, a fantastic achievement. Our sports teams have made an impressive start. Year 9 Netball and Rugby teams remain unbeaten, whilst Year 7 has enjoyed comfortable victories. Congratulations also to Olivia Davies, Shauna Lewis year 9 and Senem Akpinar year 11 who have been selected for county netball teams. Hannah Castle Head Teacher Tel: (01656) 740294

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL
PIL PRIMARY NEWS
The school held a non-uniform day on Friday 7th October to raise funds for Y Bont and the Children’s Ward at the Princess of Wales Hospital. The idea came from three children who tragically lost their younger brother in the summer holidays. They wanted to do something in memory of their brother so everyone came dressed in ‘loud colours!’ We raised £250 to be split between the two charities. A big thank you to all involved for their generosity. On Thursday 13th October we had a visit from Mary and Ryan who work for Welsh Water. They taught all the pupils in an assembly about the water cycle and how much water we waste when we clean our teeth. Workshops followed in class and the Eco-Committee will work with Mary and Ryan to try and reduce the water we use and to make the school more efficient. It has been an exciting time in Newton Primary School for the pupils in year 6. As part of our Cornerstones topic ‘Scream Machine’, we visited Oakwood Theme Park. After establishing some strong links two years ago, we managed to again secure exclusive access to the theme park for one day only. Oakwood opened several rides just for our visit. Oakwood also provided a private tour, offering several activities based around the science of roller coasters. We designed and built our own working roller coasters using various construction kits and showcased them to the younger pupils in the school. Each group named their designs and used mathematical skills to work out the equivalent scales of measurement in relation to theme park rides in the real world. Parents were also invited to attend to see all the hard work the pupils had put into this topic. We also used iMovie to create big screen marketing adverts for each ride, which were shown live on the projection screens in the school hall. We held a coffee morning at school in aid of MacMillan. Thank you to everyone who came and helped us raise £360 in support of this charity. Rachel John Head Teacher Seaside News | 18
We have lots to look forward to over the coming months at Y Ferch o’r Sgêr... An exciting start to the new academic year is being had by all former and new pupils of the school. It was good to welcome so many children to the nursery class in September. Welcome to our new families- we hope you are very happy during your time with us. The children have all settled very well and are enjoying their new play and learning environment. Well done to everyone who achieved the local libraries summer challenge. Harriet from Pyle library congratulated the successful children and presented their certificates. The school rugby and netball teams have played their first game. The children must all be commended for their enthusiasm and effort. Thank you to Mrs. Morgan and Miss Marks for coaching. Thanks also to all parents and volunteers who have come along to support the teams. WEST PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL Here we are back in school and loving the Autumn Term. What a busy term! We have celebrated Harvest at All Saints Church and in school with a lovely service led by Year 4 and Father Craig. Nursery and Reception have been busy settling into their new classrooms and reading traditional tales. Year 5 and 6 have been busy getting to know their new teachers and began their topic with an Invention Day designing, planning and creating a product that would improve school life. We had some wonderful creations and are now exploring inventors of the Victorian Period. Yr 6 have been undergoing transition with visits from PCS teachers and experiencing Science at the comprehensive school. PC Kevin has visited to talk about the dangers of drugs and how they affect our bodies. Year 3 and 4 begun this term with a Mad Inventors Day and have now started a bridge building project. They have visited Blaenavon Iron works to see how children worked and lived in the past. Year 1 and 2 had a Discovery Day and dressed up as their favourite characters. A busy term continues with Children In Need and the Christmas Concert. Year 5 journalists Seaside News | 20

It is a real honour for the school and a testament to Mr White’s skill, enthusiasm and love of teaching generations of Cefn Cribwr children. Everyone is looking forward to marking the day! SJH
HOLLYWOOD COMES TO PORTHCAWL PRIMARY
St Clare’s School continued the tradition of rewarding its young achievers with Annual Prize Day at The Grand Pavilion. Boys and girls from the Prep School right up to Sixth Form received prizes for academic excellence and sporting achievements. Headmaster, Simon Antwis commented: “Porthcawl’s famous Grand Pavilion provided the perfect stage to celebrate the achievements of the past year, showcase the talents of our pupils and reinforce our ambitions for the coming year.” St Clare’s welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress of Porthcawl with ex-pupil Sophia Dower as Guest Speaker. An outstanding student throughout her time at St Clare’s, joining from Nursery, Sophia was Head Girl and achieved straight As at A Level. She studied English, French, Spanish & Business Studies, going on to gain a degree in Law & Hispanic Law from UCL. She sat her Bar exams at BPP Law School in London, being called to the Bar by The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple. Sophia is now joining 3 Temple Gardens Chambers in October, specialising in criminal law. With her parents, Geoff and Fran of The Hi Tide in the audience, Sophia addressed a full house at The Pavilion, giving an exceptionally inspiring and motivating speech. CEFN CRIBWR PRIMARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES OUR DEPUTY HEAD TEACHER This November will witness a remarkable achievement in the long history of Cefn Cribwr Primary School! Our hugely popular deputy head teacher - Mr. Steve White - is celebrating 40 years of wonderful service to our school. Whilst the educational landscape is almost unrecognisable from the time that he first joined the staff, Mr White has been an indispensable and guiding light to generations of pupils from the village and beyond. During his continuous 40 years as a teacher, deputy head teacher and head teacher of the school, Mr. White’s service is without parallel. The current head teacher Mr Stephen Howells said that “Mr White’s contribution to the school is immense but it is not confined to just the classroom, for example, he established the Ian Thomas Memorial Sevens tournament after his arrival and continues to drive it to this day. He is also such a rock for us all, supporting and developing the staff around him”. Seaside News | 22
As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder we continue with the exciting activities at Porthcawl Primary. Firstly we are looking forward to revisiting the Sony Technology Centre after our successful trip last year. As part of their ‘It’s My Shout’ project pupils will be writing, directing, producing and acting in their own short film using all the amazing Sony technology. They will also get the chance to do some Coding using new Raspberry Pi technology. Last year’s film would have given Steven Spielberg a run for his money so we look forward to seeing the end results. We also have a trip to the engineering department of Swansea University. After last year’s Formula 1 success we are giving the pupils the chance to see the laboratories and workshops and see what opportunities are available in the world of engineering. Finally our Foundation Phase has a visit to the St Fagan’s National History Museum. This term they have been studying the local area and they will learn all about Welsh history and heritage on an event filled day. For more information on all upcoming events please see our website or our school Twitter account. Andrew Wood Head Teacher

CORNELI PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a busy half term the highlight being our Roald Dahl Day celebration. The school was full of Oompa loompas, crocodiles and Twits and that was just the staff! This fun day was filled with activities, Golden Ticket prizes and a ‘Matilda’ style competition between members of staff. Roald Dahl was the theme of the library’s Summer Reading Challenge. Over fifty children took part and they proudly received their awards from Harriette Hopkins, the librarian, during a special assembly. Well done everyone! Our year 6 children are currently studying World War 2 and thanks to one of our parents, Mr Jason Derrick, this was brought to life when army vehicles and weapons arrived on the yard. There was great excitement throughout the school as the children learned how they were used, the uniforms worn and the kit soldiers were required to carry. We give a huge thank you to the members of the Military Vehicle Trust and Re-enactors for making this such an enriching experience for the children. Thanks go also to everybody who contributed so generously to our Harvest appeal. Following our assembly, presided over by Father Duncan, the food was passed to the local Food Bank. Sue Jones

POEMS DOWN IN THE DELL
Down in the dell, is where Morgana lives – Where the sunlight filters through, For she sits by the fire, stirring a stew With Peggy by her side. For Peggy`s a cat all sleek and black With eyes flash emerald green, When hunting mice and other things – Which crawl cross her way. Down in the dell, is where Trefalla lives – Where she drys and seasons her herbs, For she hangs each bunch, so thoughtfully tied To beams above her head. Her bony hands all wrinked and old With scatches deep and marked, With fingers bent, nails long and sharp – She pulls the thistles apart. Down in the dell, is where the witches live In a cottage in the wood, Where they mix their potions, stir the stew – Ingredients close to hand. A bit of newt, an eye or two – Some legs of a jumping frog, A teaspoon of colour, pink I think! And a pint of spit and slime! A breast of chicken, some sausages too A dash of spices and salt, Two potatoes – sweet ones no less And sugar to sweeten the lot! The largest spider, its legs and all – With wings of a fly and wasp, A final stir, then realise – It all went in - one pot! Rhian White, Porthcawl
THE WEATHER MAKES NO CHOICES The rain keeps falling down, Onto the sodden ground, The puddles getting deeper, With the pitter-patter sound. The misty clouds gathering over, Making the sky all grey, It looks as if it’s going to stay, We will probably have rain showers all day. The umbrellas turned inside out, By the gusts and windy breeze, Some people are hiding, Until the bad weather starts to ease. Many people full of the flu symptoms, With lots of coughs and colds, The weather makes no choices, Of the young and the old. If you are going outside today, Please wrap up warm and tight, And you will feel much better, When you snuggle up in bed tonight. David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend Seaside News | 24

Sunbeams sparkling on the waters Star-like glinting all around Watchers gathered on the shore line Joyful hush their murmuring sound Watch those plunged beneath the waters Then raised in resurrection power As Christ who called them thus to follow Joyful meets them in this hour. Not ours to stand by Jordan’s river With those who saw God’s Son appear To watch him patient stand with sinners Nor ours the Father’s voice to hear Telling of his glad approval Spirit sending as a dove ‘This my son, my well-beloved Come to bring to you my love.’ In beauty of the air around us, Sunlight sparkling on the waves We too know that God is with us Guardian, Shepherd, God who saves Calls us too to rise and follow Not as servants but as friends Meeting us upon the sea-shore Gifting life that never ends. After forty years of toil, It’s time to take a rest. Escape the human rat race, Do what I want best. Take a break away from home, The four walls are a bind. Week or even week ends, Ease and clear the mind. Swim or take up dancing, Gardening, bowls or read. Woodwork golf or other things, Help the folk in need. Look back in satisfaction, You have had some decent health. Enjoy well earned retirement, Maybe perhaps some wealth. If you have a family, That’s icing on the cake. To have someone beside you, Each morning when you wake. Birthdays, anniversaries Xmas or new year. Children and their children, All who love you dear. So there you see, I have the lot, Health and happiness. Work has brought me all of this, Without it, I’d have less. PAWS I have lived in Porthcawl for over 50 years. 10 years ago we spotted a pretty terrier in PAWS window. Her previous owner had lost her eyesight and put Molly up for re-homing. PAWS chipped her and we brought her home. A week later she barked for the first time and so began 10 years of mayhem and fun. Many people said you should write a book about mad Molly. I didn’t think I could but started making notes then started writing. It was a few years from start to finish and to hold my book in my hand was amazing. My book is £5. They are available in PAWS, Stationery Hill and our Pet Shop. You can ring me for a copy on 01656 773256. Patricia Danter

News NEWS FROM PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL Christmas is approaching at a rapid pace… and to kick start the festive season why not attend the Porthcawl Christmas Event taking place in Porthcawl on Sunday 4th December. There will be lots of festive entertainment and much more to enjoy! Keep an eye on the Town Council website for further details as the date approaches. Porthcawl Town Council has now settled into its new meeting regime, holding one Full Council a month, supported during the year by the various Committee meetings. The Full Council meeting takes place on the second Thursday of the month. Agendas for the various meetings of Council can be viewed in the Town Council notice boards or on the Town Council website. Don’t forget meetings of the Town Council are open to members of the public to attend and observe. With Town Council elections taking place next year, now is a great time to come and see what the Town Council does in Porthcawl. There is an opportunity for Public Question Time, where a question may be put or a small statement made to the Mayor of Porthcawl. Notice of the question or statement need not be given. Contact the Town Council office for more details. Alison Thomas, Town Clerk
Deadline date for the December issue is: Tuesday 15th November
HAVE YOUR SAY ON COUNCIL’S BUDGET AND OTHER IMPORTANT CONSULTATIONS Our public consultation over the council’s future budget plan is now underway, so I hope you will give us your views on how we should meet the challenge of delivering services against a backdrop of diminishing local government resources Since 2012, Bridgend County Borough Council has already reduced its budget by £30 million, and we’re expecting to have to cover further budget shortfalls of around £37 million over the next four years, too. That’s why we want you to consider and comment on our budget priorities by completing the online ‘Shaping Bridgend’s Future’ survey at www.bridgend.gov.uk/future The deadline for doing this is by Thursday 1 December. Because it is important that as many people as possible take part, everyone who completes the survey will receive a free seven-day pass at a Halo leisure centre and will also be entered into a draw to win a full year’s Halo membership and a family ticket to see this year’s panto at the Grand Pavilion. We also have several other consultations finishing soon, including ones on Mynydd Cynffig Primary School, childcare sufficiency assessments and Welsh medium education - visit the consultation pages at www.bridgend.gov.uk to find out more and have your say. MARITIME CENTRE A STEP NEARER News that approval has been given by Bridgend planners to the hugely important and ambitious Maritime Centre scheme in Porthcawl is fantastic. I have followed this project forever since I was elected in 2011, keeping up to date with the switched-on local team led by Mike Clarke and Stuart Bentley. They had a dream and that dream is now one step closer to realisation. A professional approach means they have faced and dealt with the challenges. This group is a shining example of what community can mean with the local benefit first. The Harbourside Community Interest Company is offering Porthcawl as a seaside resort and its thousands of visitors far more than the council-led regeneration programme – which has the unique characteristic of being both unpopular and invisible. It has taken years of hard work, commitment and determination to get this far. Without those qualities in spades, nothing would have been achieved. With BCBC now supporting the community rather than frustrating it, things are looking up and we can only hope that this £5.5m flagship scheme with its much needed and exciting facilities for both holdaymakers and residents is now on the home straight. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative South Wales West www.suzydavies.com
HARBOURSIDE NEWS After four years of hard work, liaising with BCBC across many departments, we are delighted to announce that full planning permission has been granted for the Porthcawl Maritime Centre and Harbour Quarter development. This anchor building will house a wealth of leisure, sporting, health & well-being and new community facilities, supported by the commercial aspects of the project. We are extremely pleased that the Development Control committee recognised our intention to ensure that this development’s benefits are to be felt across the whole of the Borough and beyond. Finalising the agreement to lease on the East Pier has been challenging; the range of statutory marine and other consents has been significant. This next, imminent stage of the Harbourside project, installation of the Boat Lift - assisting boat owners, commercial fishermen and RNLI fully illustrates our commitment to improving the area for all areas of the community. We would like to thank everyone who supported our planning application, and those who continue to support us. A very important aspect of our facilities will be a ‘publicly accessible changing place facility’ - based on the Changing Places Consortium’s Practical Guide. SHOP WORKERS SHOULD BE FREE FROM FEAR THIS CHRISTMAS
ASKING THE QUESTIONS – PORTHCAWL U3A
Going to the shops in the last few weeks I have been met with an onslaught of festive products. Halloween costumes, decorations and even the odd Christmas tree bauble. A reminder that as the days get shorter and the weather chillier we will soon be embracing the festive period with all its joy and all its stresses. We all know that it can be a stressful time with pressures for everything to be just right. In the midst of it all we must remember to be respectful to retail workers who really are on the frontline. For this reason I am supporting USDAW’s ‘Freedom from Fear’ campaign to prevent abuse against workers. Abuse is not part of the job, everyone has the right to work without the fear of violence, threats or abuse. The main aims of the campaign are; to raise awareness with that abuse against workers is unacceptable, to give workers the confidence to speak out against any abuse receive, negotiate with employers for safety and security improvements in stores and to ensure government policies help tackle retail crime and anti-social behaviour in shopping areas. Long queues are frustrating but do not take your exasperation out on staff as it’s beyond their control.
In September, I enjoyed taking part in Porthcawl U3A’s version of Any Questions. Keeping to the format of the popular Radio 4 panel programme, Porthcawl U3A members were invited to submit their questions on a range of topics in advance of the event. The questions were not made known to me and fellow panelists - The Venerable Peggy Jackson, Archdeacon of Llandaff, Anne Morgan, the former High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan and Andrew Slade, Head Teacher of Porthcawl Comprehensive School in advance of the event. This made for a very lively debate. Keeping the panelists in order was Chris James, the Chair of Porthcawl U3A. Jonathan Dimbleby would have been very proud. Six questions were selected. Questions chosen reflected local interest and news and current affairs. Question topics included wealth distribution in society, the entrapment of Sam Allardyce, former England Football Manager, the regeneration of Porthcawl, should the Assembly have more powers, what it means to be Welsh and which has the more secure future the Labour Party or the Church. I would like to thank the organisers Dorothy and Doug Jones for organising the event. They have worked hard and it was a great success.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES In the English language we only have one word for love. Therefore, we can say “I love my spouse”, and in the next breathe say, “I love chocolate”. In the Greek language however they have four different words for love depending on what is being referred to. The words are 1. Storge, which means affection - maybe the sort between family members. 2. Philio, which means something like fondness that can exist between friends. 3. Eros, which is to do with romance. 4. Agape, which means unconditional love. Parents would certainly understand this kind of love toward their children. Agape is the word used in the bible when talking about God’s kind of love. God’s love is unconditional. It is always others centeredness and self sacrificial. In fact the bible says that God is love (1 John 4 v 8). God loves because he is love. His love reaches out to you whether you know it or not. My encouragement to all this month is to get to know God and this kind of love. It’s this kind of love that could answer the problems we see in the world today. What would the world be like if everyone loved like God? Neil Harvey 07988 478845

This exciting new project started on Thursday, 7th October 2016 for people from Kenfig Hill and surrounding district to meet and engage in activities that will improve their physical and mental health, encourage artistic hobbies and enhance their wellbeing. There are two separate sessions, Arts & Crafts, and Wellbeing, and these will alternate each Thursday. For those who wish to stay for both classes, a light lunch will be offered. TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa We had a visitor to the workshop from Tanzania last Tuesday, 4th October. Damian Changa who is the organiser for various regions in Tanzania, and is responsible for partnership and training with groups who have some specific needs. He came to visit the work being done by some of the refurbishing groups, organised by TFSR Cymru and spoke about the change it makes to many lives. While in the workshop he was able to link up with colleagues working back home. The Global news is not always sad. There will be smiling faces in Tanzania at the Banjami motorcycle repair workshop in Dodom, the 4U shoe making workshop, the Lihengi furniture making business in Ruvuma, the Mabatini Auto workshops and the Simila Carpentry groups which are all receiving large kits of tools to build up their businesses. Altogether over 200 refurbished tools. It is estimated that over 400 people will directly benefit and livelihoods improved for many families. These crates are being shipped out at the end of October as well as several sewing machines and haberdashery kits. If anyone wants to help please ring John on 01656 786367. ‘RMS Titanic,’ sank on 15th April 1912, resulting in the tragic loss of 1517 lives. Yet, she was one of three ships built at Haarland and Wolfe Shipyard, Belfast, by the White Star Line. The other ships were the ‘RMS Olympic’ and ‘RMS Britannic.’ The Olympic, whose service as a troopship in WW1, earned her the nickname ‘Old Reliable’ was eventually scrapped in 1935. However, the Britannic suffered a different fate. Her maiden voyage was not only delayed as a result of WW1, but she was, also, requisitioned as a hospital ship. On 12th October 1916, the Britannic arrived at Southampton; completing what would be her fourth voyage between Britain and Mudros. On board was Nurse Elsie Thomas, Victoria Avenue, Porthcawl, who was returning home to be married, after serving for 12 months at Ras-el-Tin Military Hospital, Alexandria. Sadly, on her 6th voyage the Britannic hit a German mine on 21st November 1916, off Kea Island. 30 were killed. MP Shirley Williams’s mother Vera Brittain was one of the survivors. As was Nurse Violet Jessop who had the uncanny notoriety of being the only person to travel on the Titanic, Olympic, Britannic and survive! Ceri Joseph

LANDLORDS – THE CLOCK IS TICKING Wednesday 23 November is the deadline for all private landlords to have registered with Rent Smart Wales. Sara Hawkins, Rentals Director for Payton Jewell Caines explains: “Rent Smart Wales is Welsh Government legislation that will help prevent rogue and even criminal, landlords and agents in the management and letting of properties. It will also help to protect tenants in the private rented sector, raising the reputation of the sector as a whole.” Landlords have until 23rd November to comply with their legal obligations. Registration costs £33.50, while those landlords who also require a licence must pay £144 and an additional fee for their training. Once completed, both registration and licencing will be valid for a period of five years. Sara Hawkins adds: “Landlords really must take on board the changing legislation sooner rather than later. Complying with the new legislation takes time and consideration; leaving it to the last minute means that you risk missing the deadline.” For further information, visit the Rent Smart Wales website www.rentsmartwales.gov.wales or call 03000 133344.

Now could be the perfect time to sell your home! At Peter Alan we’re encouraging anyone who is considering moving to sell their property now, as the local property market is looking stronger than this time last year and an increased number of people are looking to move home. Christine Armsby, our Porthcawl Branch Manager, commented, “Immediately after the result of the
referendum we noticed the market cool for a few weeks due to inevitable buyer and seller uncertainty. However the housing market has now quickly settled back down and there are clear signs that confidence has returned to the market. Companywide our results are really positive, with both instructions and sales higher than this time last year, proving there is an ever increasing demand for homes in the area.” With the festive period around the corner it’s important not to think the market is quiet at Christmas, in fact last year between Christmas Day and the first working day of the new year Rightmove received a 195% increase in traffic, that’s a huge surge of people viewing properties during the holidays, so now could be a great time to sell!

Although Inner Wheel still has very close connections to Rotary, the membership rule changes have meant more independence for our organisation. We now have members with a more direct connection to Inner Wheel. Recruitment is more open and welcoming to those women who do not have a connection with Rotary. Mary Emment-Lewis is now our Membership Officer. Chairman Lynda then spoke of her work in Romania. Her many visits helped orphan and deprived children. She took many items with her for those children. Her talk was illustrated with coloured photographs. It was very moving. At the end of the talk President Sheila presented the District Chairman with a cheque for her chosen charity, The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. On Friday 11th November Inner Wheel is holding a Christmas Fayre in Trinity Church Hall. There will be several stalls and a welcome cup of coffee with biscuits. Tickets are available from Inner Wheel members and at the door on the day. We look forward to seeing you there. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent
Our October meeting was taken by President Dawn Storie, who welcomed everyone and introduced new member June Matthews to those present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and agreed. Travel arrangements were given for GFWI Dinner at The HiTide and our Xmas lunch at The Atlantic Hotel. Details of two bursaries, to be awarded for courses at Denman College, were announced. A ballot is to be held. Our speaker, Alan Badmington, was truly inspirational, while being ‘Lost for Words’. His talk was so captivating and all the members were in awe of him at the end of the evening. Vote of thanks given by Jackie Harris. The raffle was won by Margaret Williams and the competition by Barbara Rees. The Luncheon Club will be on 8th November and the Book Club, at Bridgend Library, will take place on 15th November. Our next meeting will be held on 3rd November at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). The guest speaker, Nora Burns, will advise on ‘What suits you best’. Our competition is ‘A fashion accessory’. New members are always welcome, why not come and join us. For further information call Diane on 01656 656600. Dawn Storie

SKER WI – NORAH CLARKE INTRODUCES BOWIE TO THE WI! On Thursday 13th October, Sker WI welcomed Mrs Norah Clarke as guest speaker. She had brought along Bowie, a 6-month old Golden Retriever puppy to assist her. Mrs Clarke has been a puppy walker for the Guide Dogs since 2007. Mrs Clarke gave us an inspiring talk on the development of Guide Dogs, from its inception in 1931 by 2 British women to its current status as the world’s largest breeder and trainer of working dogs. An estimated 29,000+ people have been supported to achieve life- changing levels of independence over the years. Over its lifetime a Guide Dog will cost many thousands of pounds. People like Mrs Clarke are essential to the success of Guide Dogs, as they not only raise and train puppies but also do fundraising and raise awareness by public speaking. You might be interested in a table-top sale in aid of Guide Dogs to be held at Laleston Gardening Club, 29th October, 10am - 12. Sker WI meet on 2nd Thursday of the month at St David’s Church Hall, 7pm. Visitors are always welcome so come along and say hello! Christine Beynon

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Tuesday 11th October Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill we were having our October meeting, good turnout of members. Minutes read by our Sectary, meeting chaired by our vice president. W.I. business discussed and our bring and buy to raise funds for the Denman Appeal we are holding in November were finalised, our thoughts turned to our Christmas Party. We decided to have a ‘Posh’ party with entertainment, posh frocks and goodies to eat. Members discussed the events they had attended since our last meeting and all had enjoyed themselves. Our speaker was Ann Cullen who showed us how to make a rug. It was very interesting and the rugs she showed us were amazing, especially as most of the materials were destined for the charity shops or landfill - as she put it “she was doing her bit for recycling.” Several of our members had a try and we were amazed at how quick it was. Ann showed us Christmas wreaths made out of the same materials. Lots of ideas for Christmas. Our speaker for November is John Hanson his topic Tools for Africa should be interesting. Meeting finished with tea and biscuits. Pop in one month to meet us. Christine Callaghan
NEWTON WI The October meeting was presided over by the Vice President. Anne Thomas, as our President was on holiday. November dates for our diaries include: Christmas Festival at Neath and Christmas Tree Festival at Margam Orangery. The speaker at our October meeting was, Neil MC Sinclair, who gave us a most interesting talk on ‘From Tiger Bay to Cardiff Bay’. He has written books and made TV programmes on this subject, and as he was born and brought up in The Bay, he has first hand knowledge of the area and the many changes that have taken place. Our walk at Aberavon Beach could be called a ‘washout’ as it poured with rain constantly. We were all soaked but had great fun drying out in Remo’s Cafe. For more information on Newton WI ring Jennifer on 784715. M Freeman Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Legal
DIVORCE
PREPARE A PRENUPTIAL Solicitors are reporting an increase in requests to prepare prenuptial agreements from people whose parents have given them money to help them buy a home. This desire to control where parental money goes has increased partly because more people are giving money to their children in this way. A study in July suggested that the Bank of Mum and Dad would lend or give £5 billion this year. However, only one in twenty-five parents who loan money document it legally. There are two options for parents who want to help their children in this way, and both have limitations. Giving money to help someone buy a home is tax efficient, as the rules state that no inheritance tax is payable, provided that you live for seven years after making the gift. The downside is that some or all of the money could be taken away from your child in the event of a divorce. If you lend money, however, a declaration of trust will need to be drawn up, and there will be tax consequences. You will be considered to own a share of the property and will be liable for the stamp duty surcharge on second home properties upon purchase and capital gains tax upon sale. To be effective, a prenuptial agreement has to be fair, it has to be drawn up at least a month before the marriage, all assets have to be disclosed and both parties have to have access to a solicitor. It is not pleasant to broach the subject of a prenup with your intended. However, given the stress and cost of proceedings where there is no prenup, it is better to raise the issue and say that your parents require it, rather than to have to deal with the fall out in the alternative. If you decide to separate or divorce your spouse there are a number of issues you need to consider. If you are the main or only earner in a marriage, you may need to continue providing financial support to your spouse before reaching any final agreement. Conversely, if you are financially dependent on your spouse, ask for suitable arrangements to be made. If your spouse refuses, you can apply to the court for an interim financial order. If you are concerned that your spouse will abuse them, you could close joint bank and credit card accounts. If your spouse is the sole owner of the family home, you can register your home rights to prevent the home being sold without your agreement. When considering the financial settlement, the first priority is to look after the welfare and financial needs of any children, more specifically, children under 16 and older children who are in full-time education or have a learning disability. In addition, the parent who no longer lives with the children will normally provide financial support. You can negotiate an agreement on child maintenance between yourselves or involve the Child Support Agency “CSA”. The other key factors to be taken into account include: • Each spouse’s income and other financial resources. Actual income, rather than prospects. Any pension entitlements are also taken into account. • Each spouse’s financial needs. • How long you have been married and how old each spouse is. The longer the marriage, the more likely it is that the less wealthy spouse will be entitled to a substantial share of the assets and/or continuing maintenance. • The contribution each spouse has made. Importantly, looking after the house and children can be as valuable a contribution as that of the partner who earned the income. The right agreement for you will depend on your circumstances and objectives. As a starting point, you should both fully disclose your financial positions. Once you have reached agreement, you should apply to the Court for a Consent Order. This allows the court to check that the agreement you have reached is fair. It also limits the ability of either spouse to ask the court to change financial arrangements, and makes it easier to take action if your former spouse fails to honour his or her commitments. If you cannot reach agreement between yourselves, you will need to apply to the Court for a Financial Order.

Finance EQUITY RELEASE – NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE
QUALIFIED PENSION TRANSFER SPECIALISTS
It’s unusual for me to write on the same subject two months running but this month I want to dispel a few myths. Releasing equity from one’s property used to be complicated, uncompetitive cost-wise and sometimes worked to the benefit of the lender more than the homeowner. How times change – these days, the schemes are easy to understand, VERY competitive and cost effective, flexible in ways they have never previously been and can often be helpful in so many other ways, including Estate Planning. Plus – they’re all highly regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and with guarantees for the customer. If YOU already have an equity release scheme, perhaps one which you took out some while back, you are probably subject to a much higher interest rate than you can be. Not many people are aware that you can switch to a different provider, often with little cost and with incentives provided for you. We recently arranged for one of one of our Clients to get advice on up to date plans and she was able to switch from a scheme charging 6.49% to one charging just 3.84% - and with a free valuation and cash-back towards her costs. The benefit gained was huge and whilst not everyone will be able to achieve the same result ( depends on the circumstances ), finding out costs nothing at all – and could save a large amount of money, hence greater benefit for the Family. DID YOU ALSO KNOW? – that you can actually move to a new or different property using Equity Release. Let’s say for example, that you sell your home for £200,000 but you buy somewhere else costing £230,000, a difference of £30,000. You are able to take out a £30,000 equity release scheme on the NEW property, hence assisting you to move. And for those of you with interestonly mortgage going into retirement, there are now lenders who specialise in allowing you to STILL pay interest-only for life – provided all the figures work out and fit together. All you have to do to find out is call – 01656 782545 and we’ll arrange for a properly qualified specialist Adviser to talk matters over with you.
CST Wealth Management Chartered Financial Planners have the added value of qualified Pension Transfer Specialists who can analyse the benefits and highlight the disadvantages on the potential transfer of a final salary scheme into a private pension arrangement The decision on whether to transfer or not is a very complicated area and our specialists follow strict procedures and hold the requisite qualifications and our Director, Gwyn Williams, in addition holds the appropriate authorisation set down by the Financial Conduct Authority, our Regulator to provide advice in this area. There are key considerations before any decision can be made; state of health (any partner as well as your own), spousal/ dependents pension and death benefits under both existing and any proposed new arrangement. Investment flexibility A final salary scheme’s investment strategy is determined by the Trustees, so no influence can be exerted by individual members. Where a deferred scheme member say has their own business, a transfer to a personal arrangement could help with commercial property purchase, with the company paying rent to the pension rather than to a third party landlord. Or indeed where the directors already personally own the property using a pension to buy the property could free up capital for the directors. This is a complicated area with additional issues around capital gains tax and various business reliefs that also need to be considered, never mind the risks of investing large amounts of a pension fund into a single illiquid asset class. For some clients though, being able to use transfer monies in this way could be a major influencing factor. Like most areas of financial planning this is complex and needs careful analysis and consideration. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
November already, I’ve only now got used to October. What about October then? The beautiful trees, nature is incredible. November, always a dismal month for gardeners, ever shortening days, wet and windy weather, trees shedding leaves. So, let’s plan ahead to the spring garden. Browse the catalogues try something new. I have been told that now is the time to plant wallflowers, polyanthus and low growing tulips to the front of the borders to hopefully dodge the easterly winds. There is time to plant bulbs in containers, try and match containers to bulbs. The greenhouse will certainly need some attention, as will the tools before being put away for the winter. Well, Halloween has passed; hopefully, it was fun and not too scary. When I was young, my brothers and I thought that ducking for apples and telling ghost stories was living dangerously! So, this month we look forward to Guy Fawkes, fireworks and bonfires. Just a few reminders - check that there are no hedgehogs or similar hiding, before lighting up. Do not light a fire within an hour of sunset, or leave alight later than one hour after sunset. Follow the rules, and enjoy. Gwen Bradford
“October extinguishes itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain, and ten November arrives, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts and icy drafts that bite at exposed hands and faces” (JK Rowling – Harry Potter) Lovely! Lots of maintenance work to be done in the garden this month, stake tall plants to prevent them being blown about and damaged in bad weather, clean all your garden tools,(boring but necessary). Rake up excessive leaves, a fine scattering around plants can be left for the worms to pull down into their burrows, but lots create a nice warm home for slugs and snails! Although most perennial plants are hardy to frosty cold weather, some are not, a piece of old carpet round the base of fuchsias and ceanothus will work wonders when the frosts come! Still time to plant tulips, by planting them after other spring bulbs there is less chance of them being infected with the fungal disease called ‘tulip fire’. Did you know – There are no moles in Ireland (nothing to do with St. Patrick!) Apparently the Irish Sea filled in so fast after the Ice Age; they never managed to get there! Chris Early

Health BEING OVERWEIGHT & CANCER RISK
IS THIS SOME OF YOU?
According to recent research, the longer a woman is overweight, the more likely she is to develop breast, endometrial, colon or kidney cancer. Obesity is indeed a known risk factor for cancer, so this finding in and of itself is not surprising. Worldwide, obesity is responsible for an estimated 500,000 cancer cases each year, and according to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), excess body weight is responsible for about 25 percent of the relative contribution to cancer incidence, ranking second only to smoking. When obesity is combined with other high-risk behaviours, such as a poor diet and lack of exercise, the relative contribution rises to 33 percent of all cancer cases in the U.S. What’s new here is that the length of time spent being overweight also contributes to your overall risk. “On average, the study found, the odds rose by 10 percent for every 10 years a woman had been obese. Similarly, they climbed by 7 percent for every decade she’d been overweight.” Read the whole report at: www.mercola.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke
Ten years ago, you couldn’t select an attractive partner, swipe your finger across a smart phone screen and instigate the beginnings of a new exciting relationship. The trouble is that I repeat this every week! I am constantly in love with being in love. It’s causing me many unwanted problems. I used to watch match of the day and enjoy the game. Now I watch multiple games at the same time, predict the winning team and gamble at the touch of a button. I used to support Arsenal but now I support the bookmaker! I have three friends who I could confide in, now I am a social media platform with five hundred friends. We all borrow our photo space and use the label ‘friend’ but it’s real you know. When in a social meeting I was told it is important to concentrate on the person you were talking to, now I eagerly await the beep of my phone giving me the cue to hide. Now I am just inattentive, because I am scared of being boring. I use the word ‘busy’ a lot, truthfully I am distracted. I am in a rut, I simply don’t know what to do with my ‘time’? The impact of our present social habits. We are often restless, often rushed and lonely. Could the Buddha’s teachings on wise attention, formation of habit and right lifestyle be the exact antidote to these limiting social conventions? Is there a part of you that acknowledges that life doesn’t seem as smooth as it could be? Perhaps you need that exploratory dimension to allow change to happen naturally. If you have completed a Mindfulness Course – this is Mindfulness plus! Contact: evansneville@aol.com Neville Evans

Arts WRITING SUCCESS
STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
Bridgend Writers’ Circle is proud to announce that Porthcawl poet and author Jan Davies has won the Saviker trophy for the second year running. The Saviker competition consists of three pieces of writing: a poem, a short story and another piece of prose (in 2016: a memoir). It is judged externally and the prize is awarded to the writer with the best overall performance. The theme, this year, was The Countryside. Local author Laura Foakes was asked to adjudicate. Congratulations to Jan! Janine Enos
It’s that time again when I ask “Is Porthcawl the only town in the UK that doesn’t have an official countdown and switch on of its Xmas lights?” It really is embarrassing for the town and sad for the kids. Surely they know where the power switch is and can count one to ten backwards? I’ll waive my appearance fee of £5,000 if they need a celeb for the big switch on! Don’t let the kids down, please! Rest Bay’s superstar Jack Taylor’s U.S.A. boyband is now called ABT LST NT (About Last Night), so follow them on the web and Facebook for their new videos. Also Kenfig Hill’s multi-talented Jayce Lewis has opened a state-of-the-art studio at Court Colman Hotel, called Northstone Studios –look on the website for info and I’ll feature more on Jayce next month. Sadly, I missed Cardiff band The Imposters’ recent local gig, with bassist Mal Preest, an old mate who, while a member of Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets in 1980, played on my successful cult single ‘Ain’t No Fun On The Dole’, which put my career on the music map. Mal acts on S4C’s Pobol y Cwm, and I look forward to meeting up soon. Finally, best of luck to Mike Ruck, new landlord of the Jolly Sailor in Newton. Stag Marks 07549 728356
COR BRO OGWR’S NEW LOOK A new conductor and a new variation on the choir’s annual Christmas Concert! Musical Director Rosie Howarth will be bringing her enthusiasm and energy to conducting this concert featuring Benjamin Britten’s ‘Ceremony Of Carols’, Daniel Pinkham’s ‘Christmas Cantata’ and Will Todd’s ‘Three more Jazz Carols’ from his larger work, ‘Christmas in Blue’. These last two pieces are contemporary works with a jazz twist; accompanied by a brass quintet, our own accompanist, Glenn Crooks, flexing his jazzy piano fingers, and Britten by a local harpist, Angharad Edwards. Our two accompanying sopranos are both from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama; Grace Wyatt and Catrin Raymond, who may well be singing some solos Welsh items. Rosie herself is an MA graduate in Choral Conducting from the RWCMD, conducts a number of other choirs and sings in the BBC National Chorus of Wales. She uses her beautiful soprano voice to great effect in rehearsals, as well as her enthusiasm for dramatic armography. Exciting rehearsals this term! As usual our concert will take place in All Saints Church, Porthcawl, on Saturday 10th December at 7pm. Tickets £10 at the door or call 01656 653326. Dominique Spearey www.cor-bro-ogwr.com

AHNUH VALENTINE REACHES REGIONAL FINALS OF OPEN MIC UK Local singer Ahnuh Valentine is representing Bridgend in the singing competition Open Mic UK - ‘The Biggest Search for Unsigned Acts in the UK’ this summer. Ahnuh wowed the judges with her acoustic performance of ‘I knew who I was this morning’, her original song and has progressed through to the live shows and Regional Finals of the competition! Ahnuh said “I am so happy to be through to the Regional Finals of such a renowned competition and will keep everybody updated with my progress through my blog and articles in The Seaside News.” Ahnuh has had a busy summer of singing and would like to say a huge thank you to Y Bont for hiring her to perform at their Indian Summer Soiree fundraising event. “I had a great time and it was a pleasure to be able to perform in aid of Y Bont. I’m sure lots of money was raised for a great cause.” Missed Ahnuh on The Welsh Connections show on Oystermouth Radio? Head to their website to catch up and listen to Ahnuh’s Original album in full along with great conversation about her influences and experiences as a singer.

ART IN FOCUS
Come along to our Christmas Concert ‘Festival Carols’ at All Saints Church Porthcawl on Friday 2nd December at 7pm. This year we will be accompanied by Porthcawl Community Orchestra and also by harpist Georgina Davies as well as our regular stalwart accompanist Sheila Miles on piano and organ. Our soprano soloist for the evening will be Elinor Williams. Under our musical director Angharad Edwards we will be singing a selection of carols old and new with some community carols. During the interval wine and soft drinks will be for sale. Tickets are £6 and that includes a mince pie. There will also be a raffle. New members are always welcome in all parts SATB. It’s back: Artes Mundi 7, the biennial international exhibition and prize, which takes place in Cardiff at The National Museum and Chapter. Artes Mundi is an internationally focused arts organisation. It identifies, recognises and supports contemporary visual artists who engage with the human condition, social reality and lived experiences. Amongst the six shortlisted artists are: Lamia Joreige, a Lebanese artist and filmmaker who uses archival documents to explore the trauma the Lebanese wars have had on its people, particularly in Beirut. Her art was the first by a Lebanese artist to be acquired by Tate Modern. The Welsh born artist Bedwyr Williams uses multimedia, performance and text to explore the friction between ‘the deadly serious’ and ‘the banal’ aspects of modern life. Some of you may be aware of his parody piece ‘Bard Attitude’, previously on show at the museum. On show will also be the work of the award winning FrenchAlgerian artist Neïl Beloufa. Beloufa uses video and multimedia to explore and parody social interaction through subjects as diverse as extra-terrestrials, nationalism and terrorism. This is a must see show and promises to be a thought provoking experience. For more info contact josephinelewington@yahoo. co.uk Josephine Lewington MA

His special guest Alan Barnes, on clarinet and saxophone - a veteran of jazz festivals and winner of many awards - is simply one of the best entertainers and technically brilliant reeds players on the jazz circuit and is generally recognised as a world class musician. Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW A few weeks ago I spent the day in West Wales, filming a scene for Carl Richards’s lighthouse documentary, shortly due for YouTube. We set up the camera near West Angle Bay near Pembroke, the idea being to get a shot across the entrance to Milford Haven, where there is regular sea traffic with large gas tankers passing through, St Anne’s lighthouse being visible in the background, situated on a prominent headland looking out to sea. That, of course, was the purpose of the shot, to show a large ship entering or leaving the haven in such a way that the viewer can also see the lighthouse, that all-important aid to navigation. But although the local port authority has the timetable of all commercial shipping movement, vessels do not always oblige by being on time! Hence, we waited for several hours for a big tanker to turn up, but it was either early or late. Fortunately, there are also fishing trawlers and pleasure craft using the waterway, and the daily Irish ferry, so our time wasn’t wasted. One yacht decided to set sail for the channel, seemingly into the teeth of a gale, brave soul, serving as a reminder that our coastal waters are not for the faint-hearted. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We have had some great presentations, including one of amazing close-up images of butterflies, dragonflies and other insects from Johnnie Rogers. We also held our annual Chairman’s Trophy Competition, which is only for images taken on club practical evenings, events or field trips and judged by our Chairman, Glyn Edmunds. There were some great images put forward making it very difficult to choose the winner, but from the shortlist, the eventual winner was Peter Yule with ‘Outside the Talking Shop’. We have a packed programme lined up for the rest of the season, including Presentations, Competitions and Practical Evenings, so come along and see what we do on Thursday evenings for yourself. Due to the closure of the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel we have now moved to the North Cornelly Community Centre, 30 Heol Las, North Cornelly CF33 4AS. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds on 01656 772831 for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the North Cornelly Community Centre. Sport PADDLE OUT FOR EVSY
Whenever someone loved is taken away, there is always a sense of loss and longing to family and friends. When this person is such a legendary character, such as Craig Evans (or Evsy) loved by so many, magical things happen. It’s been 6 months since he was last with us and to commemorate and celebrate all that he was, the whole community came together in an honorary paddle out (an ancient traditional surfing send off). In total, 79 people took to the sea to perform the ritual (including his beloved wife Jemma and two daughters). Flower lei’s and wreaths were thrown into the centre of the circle, whilst some poignant words were spoken by
Steve Williams his best friend. In excess of 100 people watched from the beach throwing flowers in to the water breathing in this harrowingly special and intimate moment. The lifeboat crew were also on hand to assist with the smooth running of the ceremony. People hugged, they cried, they smiled (some shivered) and words of “Evsy would have loved this” passed through the crowds. It was the send off of all send offs, bringing everyone together with a winning combination of the ocean, good food, friends, family, love and a bottle of beer. Despite poor weather forecasts the storms held off long enough and graced us with dramatic skies, a sunset and then a rainbow to close the ceremony. The atmosphere was powerful. We felt strong in our grief. We felt connected. It was electric. The crowds were right “Evsy would have loved this” as did everyone else involved. Emily Seage Seaside News | 56

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARDS WE NEED YOUR HELP We have been fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the Coop’s local causes for their current campaign. What this means is that if you are a Co-op member, you can not only earn 5% cash-back on everything you buy there, but also an additional 1% is given to a cause of your choice. So, please, please, can you choose us as your cause. If you shop there and do not have a membership card, then please consider getting one. This is one of those occasions where every penny counts! At the time of writing this, thanks to your generosity, we have raised almost £1,250! This will go towards purchasing safety equipment, such as hi-viz vests, so that the coaches can be seen by the Nippers when we are in the water. This will in turn increase their confidence in the sea, and add to their enjoyment. It’s a rare occasion where giving to charity can cost you nothing, and with 2 stores in Porthcawl now, there’s double the opportunity to give! Thank you all in advance. PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 8’S The weather has been very kind in recent weeks with lovely sunny warm Sundays. This has allowed us to play plenty of fixtures and the boys continue to develop. This season we have a few new faces that are new to rugby and they have slotted well into the squad. The boys continue to score some good team tries and the results have been: Porthcawl 27 - Llantwit Fardre 7 Porthcawl 13 - Valley Ravens 11 Tondu 8 - Porthcawl 12 Kenfig Hill 9 - Porthcawl 15 Porthcawl 18 - Pentyrch 2 The weather and clocks are about to change for the winter and the boys will need to ensure that they keep up their good work regardless of conditions, something they have done well over the last couple of seasons. Sport TAP IT OUT CC September saw 19 club members take on the Barcelona to Monaco charity ride in aid of Prostate Cymru. The trip was organized by Dai Lloyd and Huw Jones and what a superb event they delivered. Trying to get 54 testosterone fuelled men to cycle 600 miles on foreign roads, is an achievement it its own, then throw in the col d’eze, col de la madone and the most feared climb in world cycling Mt Ventoux. Nick named the giant of provence, Mt Ventoux stands at 6273 ft and is 21.5 km in length. The mountain achieved worldwide notoriety when it claimed the life of British cyclist Tom Simpson, who died here on 13 July 1967 and since that time more lives have been lost. The climb is brutal and no books or Seaside News article can come close to telling you the pain and torture that all the lads had to get through to summit the climb. The French writer Aritoine Blondin once concluded that “not many happy memories are linked to the witch’s cauldron”. But once at the top and watching 18 club member’s summit, is a very proud moment that I will remember for years to come. Nicky Morgan
SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE SURF REPORT Congratulations to local surfers who entered the The British National Surf Championship at Perranporth in Cornwall: Eli Perrins-Davies (who made it to the semi-final and came 3rd in his heat which makes him finish jointed 5th overall); and Rudi Perrins-Davies (who was in the semi-final of the Masters but didn’t have a very good heat so finished 4th). A victory for Ffion Hughes in the Under 14 Girls category proves that Ogmore by sea and Southerndown can produce some good champions, despite the softer, smaller waves compared to that which Cornwall and Pembroke can offer. The surf through September and October at Southerndown and Ogmore by sea has been consistent with plenty of offshore winds and sunshine keeping water temps up. It’s mid-October now and the winds are beginning to feel chilly as autumn slips in day by day. Less surfers are taking to the water as summer fades away to earlier darker evenings and cold mornings.
