Letters Danger – Quicksand, Newton Beach Dear Editor, Walking my small dog on Newton Beach at 3pm Thursday 11 September, I suffered the absolute terror of being sucked down to mid-thigh depth in quicksand, with no-one in the vicinity to see or hear me. With my torso laid forward I managed to haul one leg out at a time, and then pulled on the lead to get my dog out and towards me. After resting to try and regain some strength and sending up a prayer of thanks, I crawled a few yards before getting to my feet again to get back up the beach. I had only taken 4-5 steps before we were sucked down yet again, and to the same depth. I was now convinced that I wasn’t going to get out and at that point I was sure I wasn’t going to get out, started to cry and almost gave up. Again, from somewhere came the strength to get myself out as before and the dog too. I then crawled the rest of the way up the beach just wanting to get off that beach and get home. I was covered in a mixture of sand, slime and a black oily substance which stank. At the top of the slipway a local man asked me what had happened, and he told me that the same thing had happened to another pensioner and her dog 2-3 months back, and she had been rescued by a man who was close by. That incident had been reported in the local press as the lady sought to find the person who had saved her (Wales on Line) – Newton Beach-quicksand. I cannot even closely describe the terror and horror of this and the ‘sucking’ noise as it forces you down. Suffice to say I am still re-living the experience during sleep and am left with aftereffects of exhaustion and shock. Likewise I find it unbelievable that there is no ‘Beware – quicksand at low tide’ warning notice at the entrance to Newton Beach, large and prominent. Having spoken to the Beach & Safety Officer at BCBC about this, I was told that whilst they were aware of the quicksand, and of the previous lady’s incident, but a sign couldn’t be erected without the permission of the owner of the land at Newton Beach, and that having tried for some time they had been unable to find out who the owner is. I contacted the Land Registry Office at Swansea myself that same day and they informed me it is a simple matter of supplying a sketch of the area in question, or the area marked on a map, together with a small fee, and the details of the land owner will be disclosed ! I visited the Newton Beach car park and photographed 7 signs in all - parking tariff, vehicles prohibited on beach, public safety on slipway, Boat & Surf Club signage etc. each of which I take it has necessitated the land owner’s permission. No mention of lifethreatening quicksand. It just beggars belief ! Having appealed by letter to several Local Government officers including the Wales First Minister, my local MP and Councillor for urgent intervention with a view to rectifying this ludicrous situation, I also copied local press and radio station in order to increase public awareness. At the time of writing this, I have to commend Cllr Nora Clarke for her extremely prompt action in pursuing this, also Mr Andrew

Thomas, Group Manager (Sport & Physical Activity) BCBC. Mr Thomas has recently contacted me, the search having now clarified the ownership and he assures me that once agreement has been reached with ‘certain people’ which I take to be the owner(s), his department will support the erection of an appropriate sign. He has also pledged to support increased public awareness by way of an appropriate media announcement. Once that sign is in place at Newton Beach, I will be content that I have done everything I could to prevent this horror for unsuspecting people, and undoubtedly eventual loss of life. Rosalie Hopper, Porthcawl
Cat Protection Dear Editor, An old and undernourished cat appeared on my doorstep several months ago, which I started feeding. I registered the cat with the Cat Protection at the time, for him to be taken in for adoption as I already have many cats of my own. I am still waiting for him to be taken in. Last week I noticed he was eating very slowly so checked his teeth, only to find many were rotten and one canine was broken as well as rotten. I contacted the Cat Protection (leaving a message on their machine). I suggested that if I kept the cat, as I had become fond of him and was worried he would be taken into the home and never re-homed due to his age, could they possibly help with the vet costs for removing the teeth. Someone did get back to me, only to say that they could not help with costs. I asked if they would treat the cat’s decaying teeth if they were to take him in for adoption, to which the young lady replied “Yes”. I was somewhat bemused by this because, here I am willing to take in another cat into my home (I already have 5 which were all homeless, plus I feed another two feral cats). I was merely asking for some help towards the vet fees as I am a semi-retired OAP with limited funds, and was not asking them to pay the whole amount. It saddens and extremely annoys me that they would take the cat away from a happy environment, carry out the necessary dental work, and then put him in a cage hoping someone may come along and give him a home. Letters Dear Editor, I don’t know how many times this question was asked and there was never an answer that I was fully satisfied with. In the end, you just had to accept that on cold November days these poppies were stuck on and I should be proud of myself for remembering “them”. Both my grandfather’s saw action in the fields of Belgium and France during World War One 1914-1918. William David Rosser served with the Royal Army Medical Corps and is buried in St Johns Church, Porthcawl. Albert Stanford belonged to the Royal Horse Artillery and saw action at the Battle of the Somme. Albert Maurice Stanford, my father, served in World War Two and was given a Field Commission at Dunkirk. He also is buried in St Johns Church. So what do they all have in common? They all survived the wars in which they took part. I joined the medical branch of the Royal Air Force in 1974. At first hand I was seeing and treating wounds and saw the horrors war could bring as the men returned home from the Falklands conflict 1982. Before leaving the forces I was privileged to attend the Remembrance service in The Royal Albert Hall. Poppies falling on and all around you took on a whole new meaning. There was no need to ask the question ‘why the poppy’ anymore. The first mention of poppies associated with remembering the fallen goes back to the Napoleonic wars 1799-1815 in Europe. Poppies grow naturally in conditions where the earth is disturbed. The disturbance of the land in these wars saw fields of red poppies flourish in amongst the fallen soldiers. The storm clouds rage again over the same fields in 1914 and the soil was ripped open by gunfire once more. Once again the seeds were dispersed and poppies flourished while other plants perished and failed. A scene dramatically described in the well-known poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrea. The commander of British forces was Field Marshal Douglas Haig, a family famous for the Haig whisky company. He is often referred to as “The Butcher of the Somme” as he sent so many men over the top to certain death. Historians will continue to argue whether or not he deserves this title, but it was he who set up the Haig fund after all the hostilities subsided. Renamed and now known as the Poppy Appeal, a charity to assist ex and serving men and women and their families in their time of need. The Royal British Legion formed in 1921 has adopted the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. You only have to look on line to see what The Royal British Legion has achieved to assist those in need and it’s all down to the hard work of the members and the generosity of the general public. As mentioned in a previous letter the Porthcawl branch of the R.B.L celebrates its 90th anniversary. To mark the occasion we will be holding a very special Concert of Remembrance in the Grand Pavilion on Friday 7th November 2014 at 7.00pm. We all wish this to be a special concert as preparations have being going on for months and much hard work has being undertaken to make it a success. The concert will involve our local youth groups with music, school choirs, readings and military acts of remembrance. Let’s make this concert a special occasion to be remembered for a very long time. We in turn will remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in wars long ago and those servicemen and women who need our support today. Thank you for reading. Slowly Sinking Sun Dear Editor, A selection of shots of the slowly sinking sun. Kind regards, Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl
Stop Having A Go At Dog Owners Why does everyone have a go at dog owners, dogs don’t go around leaving their rubbish on the beach, on the road and everywhere else. Most of us pick up after our dogs, do cat owners pick up after them? Do the horse riders on Newton Beach stop and pick up after their animal? The answer to this is no, so stop having a go at dog owners. Trish Page North Cornelly

SCHOOLS Newton Primary News
Afon y Felin News
It’s been a fun and busy Autumn Term at Newton so far. Many thanks to our school neighbour Annie who has allowed children in Foundation Phase to visit her fabulous garden. We made some delicious apple crumbles to share – yum, yum! Nursery and Reception have been getting dirty and mucky when exploring their new portions during their mud, mess and mixture topic. Year 1 and 2 enjoyed an interesting trip to St Fagans, we looked around all the old houses and found out how families used to live long ago. Our children have also brought in some wonderful Family Trees that they made for their Home / School task. Year 3 and 4 have been learning about what life was like as a Roman and enjoyed an exciting visit to Caerleon Fortress in Newport. We now know how to ‘walk, talk, eat and dress like a Roman!’ Year 5&6 were fortunate to be part of one of the best school trips we have ever arranged! As a trilling introduction to our Cornerstones topic ‘Scream Machine’ we were able to secure exclusive access to Oakwood theme park and received a private guided tour. There were no crowds and we were able to ride Megafobia, Speed and Treetops without queuing! We are now busy designing and marketing our own rollercoasters using a range of technology for a final presentation at the end of the topic. Rachel John (Acting Head Teacher)
Mrs Aubrey from Pyle Library visited the school to present certificates to all the pupils who had completed the Summer Reading Challenge - Mythical Maze. Well done to those that participated in the challenge. The School Council members have been elected. They are: Charlie Murphy, Kian Lamont, Leah Marie Carey, Ellie Stimson, Ellie Jade Jakeway, Joseph Reeve, Sam Matthews, Charlie Perham and Ellie Perham. The School Council plays an active and important role, representing the views of all the pupils. The Foundation Phase has been working on a project this term about nighttimes’. PC Steve Carpenter came to see them recently. He helped by telling the children about safety in the dark, and the importance of wearing high visibility vests to be seen clearly. He also explained about the roles the emergency services play. As part of their project, they have been studying owls, so we welcomed a very special visitor to the school, Mr Mike Wakeman from the Welsh Bird Of Prey Centre. He brought along two hawks, two kestrels and two owls, one of them was an Eurasian Eagle Owl! It was a wonderful experience for the children, and some of them had a chance to hold the birds! A.J. World Life-saving Championships in France At the end of September seven of our sixth form students represented the Pen-y- Bont Surf Life-Saving Club [SLSC] in the inter-club competition of the World Surf Life-saving Championships. The event took place in Montpelier in France. The Brynteg students taking part were Head boy Alex Fox, Keland Phinnemore, Leah Harris and Ellie Morrison of Year 13. From Year 12 were Craig Lewis, Lewis Crompton and Rebecca Murray. Keland Phinnemore is a member of the GB & Northern Ireland Squad and performed really well by winning a gold medal for the GB & NI team in the Serc event [simulated rescue]. In the Inter-club competition he also won a silver medal in the Board Rescue competition and a bronze medal in a team event. The Pen-y-bont trio of Keland Phinnemore, Alex Fox and Craig Lewis formed part of the four-man team in the Surf Sprint Relay event and came away with a bronze medal in the Interclub competition. Brynteg is extremely proud of our swimmers, both in their commitment to training and performance levels in competition. Well done to you all. Pam Doster Seaside News | 12

Cynffig Comp News Hello again. This is one of my favourite times of the school year: our optimistic, forward-looking Open Evening when we welcome the parents and carers of all our excited new Year 7 pupils for next September. Their feedback made it very clear that this was our best such event ever. Visiting all the presentations, activities, displays and information-stations on the night was humbling: the energy, excitement and passion of our teachers were almost tangible, and the involvement of so many of our pupils working alongside them was inspirational. The Evening is now being followed-up with visits from our partner primary pupils to experience in a bit more depth the opportunities our Science Department can offer, and already the laboratories have been witness to some pretty dramatic experiments and explosions! Of course, the school is driving forward on so many fronts, and October 15th saw our annual Diwrnod Shwmai and Twmpath, when we celebrated all things Welsh at Cynffig. By 8.00am the Hall was thronging with pupils in our Brecwast Bingo, and at 8.00pm, many were still here, dancing away the evening. It was, yet again, a true community school at its very best: happy, vibrant and driving pupils’ learning. Hannah Castle, Head Teacher Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Croeso! Welcome to our 35 new nursery pupils who will be taught in Mabon & Culhwch classes. At the end of this first half term the children are already developing some understanding of Welsh. They are thoroughly enjoying their ‘Dyma Fi’, ‘This is Me’ theme. Years 1 and 2 have been making the most of the good weather we experienced throughout September as they explore the outdoors in their ‘Hydref’, ‘Autumn’ theme. Whilst years 3 and 4 are enjoying every minute of their ‘Worldwide Gourmet’ theme! We went to Tesco to taste different foods and Warburtons came to school to make sandwiches with us and let us sample different breads. We are very fortunate at the moment as we are having football training with the Swans football team. ‘Summer Camp’ is the year 5 and 6 the theme & we got off to a fantastic start building a camp on the school field. Everybody enjoyed putting the tents up but putting them away quite a challenge! Thanks to Amanda Evans Menter Bro Ogwr who came to talk to us about her experiences of camping as Duke of Edinburgh trainer. We also went to Llangrannog for a weekend many thanks to the staff who took us. Cyngor Ysgol/ School Council

Plans For Free Learner Transport
Earlier this term, our Under 11 and Under 9 rugby teams were invited to join pupils from other Cognita schools to travel to Northampton to compete in a rugby festival hosted by premiership champions, Northampton Saints. St. Clare’s were one of seven other schools competing in a truly memorable tournament, and an opportunity that we were extremely lucky to be part of. Inside the classroom, this is an important time for Year 11 pupils. As well as having to submit coursework and sit controlled assessments, they are also tasked with deciding what to do once their GCSEs are over. The Sixth Form at St. Clare’s has something to offer every student, whether they are interested in studying traditional academic subjects such as History and Maths or pursuing more contemporary subjects such as Graphic Design and Psychology. We would like to invite all Year 11 pupils and parents from the local area to our Sixth Form Open Evening which is taking place on Thursday 13th November from 4:30pm. All subject teachers will be on hand to offer advice on A Level options, and pupils will be able to see what makes life at our Sixth Form so different. We recently celebrated the best A Level results in school for 9 years, and we invite readers to come along and learn more about just how we achieved this. To book a place at the event please email joy.harding@stclares-school.co.uk. Joy Harding www.seasidenews.co.uk
There’s still time to take part in our consultation on proposed changes for how free learner transport between home, school and college is provided from September 2016. Due to end on 22 December, the consultation features three proposals – to increase the free transport qualifying distance to the statutory limit of two miles for primary school children and three miles for secondary school pupils, to charge the full cost of a bus pass for pupils who do not receive free school transport, and to no longer provide free transport for learners aged 16 or over who attend school or college. The changes would only apply when a child begins school fulltime or moves schools, and if a pupil starts full-time at the same school where a sibling is already receiving free learner transport, they will also qualify for it. The council has always gone the extra mile in providing free learner transport, but the reality now is that we are no longer in a position to do this as we face having to plan for an anticipated budget shortfall of almost £50m over the next few years. You can take part by visiting www.bridgend.gov.uk/consultation – copies are also available at local libraries. SCHOOLS Inspiring Learning Areas At West Park
Foundation Phase staff have been hard at work designing inspiring learning areas in our wonderful Early Years Unit and it’s great to see all the bright little faces eager to learn and grow. It’s been a pleasure to show parents round our learning areas too. We’re always delighted to engage with families and build relationships during activities such as reading cafés and language and play. Junior pupils have visited Castell Henllys for some hands on Celtic fun as part of their theme for the term. They’ve been busy using their new knowledge and skills to create roundhouses and Celtic weapons. Thank you to Father Craig for delivering our Harvest assemblies. Donations from our friends and families have been delivered to the Food Bank. Elections for School Council and Eco Reps have taken place - we’re aiming for our Platinum Flag this year so keep your green fingers crossed for successful updates! Mr I Bird

Pulling Out The Stops For Charities’ Week After much planning and discussion, the Head Team at PCS has worked itself into a frenzy of effort for this year’s Charities’ Week. The five day programme, starting on 10th November is eagerly anticipated by pupils and staff alike, and traditionally brings out the best in everyone. Last year our Head Team donated over £10,000, which was distributed primarily amongst local charities such as the RNLI, the Sandville, the Adult Group at Trinity Church and the Children’s Ward at the POW Hospital. This year, pupils hope to continue to build on our existing links with the community by donating to similar local causes. As well as the sponsored stay awake, “I’m a teacher, get me out of here!”, the “Weakest Link”, sponging the teachers and many other favourites, this year, pupils and staff will collaborate in their version of “Strictly Come Dancing” which is guaranteed to be another sell out! Friday the 14th November will culminate in a fancy dress day for Children in Need, which is always a favourite amongst pupils - their imagination knows no bounds! They have a lot of fun raising the money, but the underlying message of helping others less fortunate within our own community is a strong one, and the Head Team will go to great efforts to research their potential recipients. I will update you in the next edition. On 3rd December we will be holding an Open Evening at 6pm for prospective entrants into the Sixth Form in 2015. This year we welcomed 25 new pupils into Year 12, and next year we hope to accommodate at least as many again. They have settled quickly into life at PCS, and if you are thinking that this successful school with a long tradition of academic excellence might be the place for you or your child, please come along to meet us and see for yourselves what we have to offer. Cornelli Primary News What better start could there be to a new school year than hearing about the superb achievements of our pupils past and present. At Cynffig Comprehensive School’s Presentation Evening, several past pupils received awards for their endeavours. They have made us proud and are to be congratulated. We are proud too of Taya Beechey who has again been busy raising money for charity. This time she had her long hair cut short, thereby raising around £400 for LATCH, an amazing sum. However, she is not alone in her thoughtful ways, as we raised over £136 on ‘Jeans for Genes Day’ by wearing, of course, our jeans to school. Thanks to the generosity of our families, the local food bank benefitted by receiving the majority of the items donated to our Harvest Assembly, for which they were truly grateful. The choir then took some items for the senior citizens at their lunch-club when they went to entertain them with a selection of harvest songs, which were thoroughly enjoyed. We now look forward to the second half term, which promises to be busy and full of all the delights that Christmas brings. Sue Jones Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

SCHOOLS Pandemonium At Pil Primary
A Busy New Term At Pencoed Comp
The Foundation Phase department were treated to a wonderful performance of ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ from Pandemonium Theatre Company. The children were thoroughly entertained and fully engaged in the traditional story. Many pupils supported the actors by making an appearance on stage. Key Stage 2 enjoyed the ‘Weaver’s Tale’, a historical play based on the Tudor period. They learnt through song and drama all about Henry VIII and his many wives. The children always enjoy the experience and look forward to Pandemonium Theatre Company visiting! Many thanks to the PTA who funded the theatre visit from their fund raising activities. N Pryce, Head Teacher
Primary School Writing Competition Primary school children all across South Wales are testing their writing skills by entering a short story writing competition. So far 55 schools have committed to the competition. The ‘Shining Scribes’ young writers project will challenge pupils to produce an original piece of fiction in 500 words or under. Their entries will be judged alongside the work of other pupils and a short listing panel will then determine the Top 10 stories. These winning entries will then be displayed on a website for all to view. Organiser Richard White of Brynmenyn Primary school in Bridgend said “This is a great opportunity for talented young writers to test themselves and to show –off their writing skills to a wider audience”. Under the guidance of Regional Manager Julie Williams, Usborne books have committed to the scheme and will be offering some great prizes for the winning entries and winning school. The competition is open to Year 5 and Year 6 primary school pupils across all regions of South Wales. The closing date for entry submission is December 1st. If your school hasn’t already registered and you would like to be involved then please contact bridgend500words@hotmail.com Businesses who are interested in sponsorship opportunities for the event should also use the above contact email. SCHOOLS Brynteg School News
Nottage Primary News
Educational visits are an essential part of learning in Brynteg and our students gain so much in terms of culture. In the past month the RE department, Art Department and the French Department has provided Brynteg pupils with opportunities to see and experience first-hand how art and culture help to shape our world. The RE Department took a group of sixth form students to the Bhaktivedanta Manor in Watford where they learned about the teachings and beliefs of Hinduism by members of the ISKCON Movement. They tasted delicious vegetarian food, observed an ‘arti ceremony’ in the temple and tried on saris and traditional dress. The visit provided the students with a real insight into the culture and beliefs of the ISKCON Hindus. Forty-six Year 12 and Year 13 Art and Photography students travelled to London to visit the Modern Tate Art Gallery. The purpose of the visit was to inspire and encourage the students as starting points for their own portfolios. The students were appreciative of all the Tate had to offer and were impressed by the architecture and sheer size of the building which comprised of six floors, four of which are dedicated to housing works by some of the world’s greatest artists, sculptors and photographers. The French Department took a group of Year 10 & 11 students to Villenave d’Ornon, the fourth largest suburb of Bordeaux in France, for the annual exchange trip. The students enjoyed their trip immensely, experiencing the sights and sounds of Bordeaux. They visited Bordeaux Cathedral, a local Vineyard and the more adventurous even tried oysters at the Port de Larros whilst practising their French language skills. Tres bien! On the Literacy front we were delighted when we heard that three of our talented pupils’ work had been published in a poem to celebrate 100 years since the birth of Dylan Thomas. ‘Dylan’s Great Poem,’ a national competition for anyone aged 7-25 to enter, required four lines of poetry based on the theme of ‘remembering’ for a chance to be published in a 100-line poem and to be broadcast on BBC Radio Wales. The successful pupils were Year 7 pupil Imogen Lewis and Year 8 pupils Chloe Cox and Holly Jones. Congratulations girls. Also we congratulate the following girls for getting into the U18 Glamorgan Valley’s Netball long squad. They are: Demi Brady, Megan Jeffrey, Rebecca Murray, Meghanne Davies and Chloe Dyke. Belated congratulations go to our Year 6 Basketball Team who won the Bridgend Southern League and also to Matthew Davidson who represented Sker & Pink Bay Lifeguards in the Welsh and British Championships. Our September value was PEACE and we were, once again, fortunate to have some of our assemblies led by Pauline Lewis and Father Craig. Year 6 visited the Dylan Thomas Centre to see the moving production of ‘The White Feather’ and brains were made to work hard in Years 3, 5 and 6 when the Techniquest Maths Problem Solving Kits arrived in school. Our visitors from Bangladesh thoroughly enjoyed their day at Nottage visiting classes and were amazed with the colourful learning environment our pupils experience. Their day culminated with a whole school assembly where they were presented with a selection of Welsh mementoes. Massive thanks go to the tireless volunteers, led by Mr Lewis, who have transformed the Foundation Phase Patio into such a stimulating resource. K M Townley, Acting Head Teacher
Porthcawl Primary News During October we celebrated all things reading and writing in our annual Literacy week. The week started with an assembly all about Roald Dahl, which was written and researched by our oldest pupils. As the week went on we wrote stories and completed activities using Roald Dahl’s characters and ideas as our inspiration. At the end of the week we got parents in to do literacy activities and look at all the great work we have been doing. Next up will be Numeracy week, followed by Welsh, Science and Eco Weeks later in the academic year. Our sports teams have also made a great start to the year. At the time of writing our Rugby team is still unbeaten and is through to the next round of the cup! Our team train every Tuesday and have put in a huge amount of effort to be such a success. We would like to say a massive thank you to our coach Matthew Roberts for his hard work and dedication over the last year. Our netball team is also doing really well and is growing in confidence every game. Thank you to coach Nicola Mcglynn who has made a big difference since joining the team. Andrew Wood, Head Teacher

SCHOOLS Official Opening of New 6th Form Facilities At Bryntirion Comp
Porthcawl Comprehensive Textiles Pupils Put Up A Show In John Lewis
Pupils, staff and Governors at Bryntirion were delighted to welcome the First Minister Carwyn Jones to open our new facilities. A partnership between the Local Authority, school and Laleston Community Council has provided outstanding facilities for 6th form students and a stunning support centre for targeted interventions for younger students. “Bryntirion Comprehensive School is a school on the up! Having completed my first year as Head teacher I am delighted to report the best ever results for our students at all levels. Our GCSE results are outstanding, with 94% of students achieving at least 5 GCSE grades at A*-C. In Mathematics, over 75% of students gained a grade A*-C. At A Level, 43% of grades achieved were A or A* with results significantly higher than Local Authority and Wales figures. These results place the school amongst the highest achieving schools in Wales.” Nick Brain, Head Teacher “The new facilities and superb GCSE results have encouraged more students than ever before to stay on in education. With ever increasing pupil numbers in a very successful school, the future is incredibly bright at Bryntirion.” Nick Brain, Head Teacher
Year 13 have been working on designs for collars as part of their A level syllabus; however their work took an interesting turn when they were given the opportunity to display their work in the John Lewis store in Cardiff. After initial discussions it was decided they would work with the Visual Merchandising team whereby the collars the pupils made would be primarily made from wool and their display would be shown during British Wool Week during October. The pupils then had the chance to visit the store for a look behind the scenes of the Visual Merchandising Department; they visited the workshops, gained an understanding of the corporate image of the store and were amazed at the amount of hard work and serious effort involved from a very dedicated team in the department. The same team had recently worked through the night putting up Christmas decorations at the end of September ready for a media launch at 8 AM in the morning! The pupils had a wonderful time and enjoyed seeing their work displayed in a professional way. They have even been invited to do more similar work with the store next year. We are all very thankful to John Lewis for giving the pupils the amazing opportunity. Julie Howells Art Department

Porthcawl
Comprehensive School OPEN EVENING
FOR YEAR 12 INTAKE IN 2015 To be held at 6.00pm Wednesday 3rd December 2014 The school is proud to hold its Annual Open Evening for those students who wish to enter the Sixth Form in September 2015. Any student or parent interested can obtain more details and the “welcome pack” by emailing: year12openevening@porthcawlschool.co.uk Alternatively you may telephone 01656 774100. Porthcawl is a traditional school with a proven track record of excellence for all in Years 12 and 13. AS and A2 results consistently compare very favourably with local and national figures. In 2014 • 100% of pupils achieved A* - E passes • 35% were at grades A*/A • 84.41% were at grades A* to C • 316 A level papers were sat. This year 25 pupils joined Porthcawl for the Sixth Form from other schools. “I couldn’t believe how welcoming everybody was and how quickly I settled in.” Further information can be found on the school website: www.porthcawlschool.co.uk
Our recent Estyn inspection report was very positive and we were proud to read that: “One of the school’s strengths is the exceptional working relationship between teachers and pupils. The school has a strong ethos based on fairness and this creates a caring and disciplined environment.” “The school works highly effectively with a range of partners and this work has a significant impact on pupils’ wellbeing and achievement. Collaboration with other providers ensures that sixth form students can choose from a comprehensive range of academic and vocational courses.” “In the Sixth Form, students perform above the family and Wales averages for both the level 3 threshold and wider capped points score. ...Both boys and girls achieve well at the level 3 threshold and in 2012 there was virtually no gap between their relative performance.”
News Porthcawl To Get £50,000 From Town Centre Fund
Reduce Your Carbon Footprint And Go Green
I welcome news that Porthcawl is to get £50,000 from a new Welsh Government town centre fund. It is to be spent on things like marketing, promotions and town centre events. But, apart from the proposed click and collect scheme, I remain sceptical of the value of the rest. This money should be spent effectively to help businesses in Porthcawl and not wasted on things dreamed up by bureaucrats in a top-down exercise. When I launched the Welsh Conservatives’ policy on reviving our high streets, we campaigned for two things - scrapping business rates for small shopkeepers and providing some free car parking. This fund does neither. Indeed, BCBC has delivered a double whammy to Porthcawl by pedestrianising its town centre and then hiking up parking charges. This policy nationwide has driven shoppers into the arms of the retail parks where parking is free. This regeneration money would be better spent giving BCBC a subsidy to introduce a free two-hour parking period in the car parks in Porthcawl. That will do more to help local businesses than all the marketing initiatives, town centre banners and events put together.
Sustainable Wales, hopes to boost the use of ‘clean’ or renewable energy by helping households to switch electricity supplier and reduce dangerous climate change. “Switching supplier is simple and will cost you either the same or less on your energy bills. Bring into SUSSED a recent bill and we will help you fill out the online form. There’s no disruption to your electricity or gas supply and you don’t need a new meter or anything.” said Margaret Minhinnick, Sustainable Wales Director. Supplier Good Energy who recently received the highest rating for customer satisfaction from ‘Which Magazine’ provides 100% renewable energy and buys power from over 500 renewable generators spread across the UK, from sources that include solar, wind, hydro and wave power. Call 01656 783962 or email info@sustainablewales.org.uk to arrange a time to come in. Bring in an old energy bill. Spend 15 minutes with us filling out an online form. “Both SUSSED and the charity have been supplied by “Good Energy” for a fair few years and we have no complaints whatsoever.” continued Margaret. A Step Too Far For Parents The latest illness absence advice handed out to parents of school-age children in Bridgend from the Central South Consortium which is a partnership between Bridgend, Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and Merthyr councils is in my view, irresponsible. It says that parents should send their sick children to school when they are suffering from certain illnesses. This advice is contained in a leaflet and suggests that parents should be sending children to school when they are suffering from illnesses such as glandular fever, and tonsillitis as well as infectious conditions such as conjunctivitis, slapped cheek, and hand foot and mouth. The leaflet goes on to say that children with certain conditions should keep away from ‘vulnerable children, and pregnant females’. How is anyone – including the children themselves- to know if a child is vulnerable or if a woman is in the early stages of pregnancy? I cannot help but feel that the Consortium is prioritising its own objective of increasing attendance over the well-being of children in Bridgend. My view is that they need to reconsider this advice and withdraw the leaflet. Peter Black AM Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net www.peterblack.blogspot.com

News Have Your Say On Next Year’s Council Budget How would you spend £255m allocated for next year’s council budget while also making savings of £12.4m? Our budget consultation for 2015-16 has been asking people to consider the implications of this question by using an online budget simulator, which highlights what outcomes particular decisions may have on council services. It’s designed to enable people to make alternative suggestions for how we can meet the funding shortfall while answering a series of structured questions, and to find out more about the complex issues that surround setting a realistic annual council budget. You have until 17 November to take part in the consultation at www.bridgend.gov.uk/consultation or by visiting your local library. We’ve also organised a series of community engagement workshops where people are working together in groups to make suggestions and deliver alternative proposals – the final workshop will take place at the Grand Pavilion on 12 November but space is limited, so make sure you book your place by emailing consultation@bridgend.gov.uk. I hope that as many local people as possible take part in this important consultation, and help inform the difficult decisions that will need to be taken as we strive to save money, improve efficiency and protect essential council services. Yes To A Clean Cornelly - Scoop That Poop! ‘Yes to a clean Cornelly’ was launched recently for Cornelly, Kenfig and Maudlam - supported by Member of Parliament Madeleine Moon. The scheme raises awareness of dog owners to their responsibility to clean up after their pets. ‘Bag it, bin it HERE’ stickers, kindly supplied by BCBC, have been placed on the council bins, dog owners may not be aware that the collected ’poop’ can be placed in ANY council bin. This should make disposing of it much easier for those walking their dogs around our streets. Madeleine said; “I was impressed by the response from local residents frustrated by the failure of a small number of dog owners to clean up. The mess along the footpaths made it especially difficult for push chairs and wheelchairs. This is an important campaign and one I was pleased to support.” Leaflets are being distributed in the target areas. Anyone who allows their dog to foul in a public space without cleaning it up risks an instant fine of £100 and if they are prosecuted, they could face a possible maximum fine of £1,000. The scheme is organised by the Cornelly branch of the Labour Party. Alison Lloyd Seaside News | 24
Fast Success For Local Entrepreneurs It can be extremely tough for young people to gain the skills and experience necessary to find a job, so I’m thoroughly impressed by the story of Fast Cafés – a social enterprise which is creating opportunities in North Cornelly. Two years ago, an enthusiastic group of budding entrepreneurs set up the mobile catering business which has grown from small beginnings to being among the select number of traders present for the recent NATO summit. I really admire the progress they’ve made since pitching their original business proposal to Bridgend County Borough Council’s SEWCED project in 2012, which led to them being supported through the European Regional Development Fund to purchase a van and pay for start-up costs. They’ve also been helped by Groundwork and local businesses. All of the profits made by Fast Cafés are put into their local youth club and towards creating opportunities for other young people. It’s refreshing to see such an initiative gain momentum and Fast Cafés are one of the stories being featured in a series of short films that will hopefully inspire others and help them to find work too. You can watch the Fast Cafés film at www.youtube. com/user/employmedia. Councillor David Sage BCBC Deputy Leader Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

Cutting The National Deficit One of the consequences of recent political trends has been an increase in the number of people believing that those on benefits contribute nothing to our society. A study from Sheffield Hallam University just last month confirmed that when the current welfare reforms are fully completed, more than £1 billion will have been taken out of the Welsh economy – roughly equivalent to £550 per adult, substantially more than the British average of £470 per adult. More worrying than this is the even worse effect on South Wales; as a whole we can expect to lose £430 million a year from the changes, £650 per adult. Some 3,000 jobs in consumer services may also be lost as a result, with consumer spending likely to fall following reductions in benefit. That same report confirmed if 100,000 new Welsh jobs were created, it would save the UK £1 billion a year; the same amount as is lost through these welfare changes. It would be refreshing to see such a different approach taken to cutting the national deficit, with programmes aimed at boosting growth to create jobs rather than simply cutting away at benefits. Response From Councillor Sage Dear Editor, I’d like to respond to a couple of letters that have appeared in recent issues of Seaside News concerning the council’s efforts to regenerate Porthcawl and a perceived ‘bias’ in favour of other parts of the county borough. Ever since entering politics, I have heard comments from residents in communities across the county borough about how the council supposedly favours one area over another. But the honest truth of the matter is that no such bias exists. Yes, we’ve carried out regeneration work in areas such as Bridgend, Maesteg and Pencoed – why wouldn’t we? – but all of this has been at the same time that we have been attempting to deliver a complex multi-million pound regeneration in Porthcawl, too. The fact that the Porthcawl regeneration has been hindered by factors outside of our control is hugely frustrating after the amount of effort that the council and its partners have put in, and to suggest that we are deliberately ignoring the town is simply wrong. People often point to how much is being spent on a scheme in a community that is not their own, but it is important to remember that the funding for such schemes is specific to that project, and cannot be used for any other purpose. In other words, we cannot apply for a grant to carry out work in Porthcawl, and then decide to spend it on Aberkenfig instead (or vice versa). I refer to ‘factors outside our control’ because the foodstore developers withdrew their plans due to internal economic issues which were subsequently well reported in national media – issues which we could do absolutely nothing to influence. The provision of a foodstore was criticised as ‘lacking vision’, but it was intended to attract additional business and unlock funding for further phases of the regeneration – lest we forget, land at Salt Lake is also reserved for a landmark leisure development, and we would have come to this in due course. Seaside News | 26
As a result of the developer’s withdrawal, the silt from Porthcawl Marina had to be temporarily stored for longer than anticipated, but the intention was never to simply leave it - we promised to move the material, and that is exactly what we have done. And the reason why we had to enter into agreements with other landowners in the regeneration area was due to the fact that council does not possess all of the land necessary for the scheme. Yes, Porthcawl needs investment, and yes, the regeneration plans are dependent on a number of issues. I understand and share people’s frustration, and I genuinely want to see Porthcawl prosper and thrive – that’s why projects have been introduced such as the new Porthcawl Marina, coastal path, Rest Bay boardwalk, multi-million pound townscape heritage initiative which will transform buildings such as the old Knight’s Arms and Customs House, new facilities for visitors at Rest Bay or plans to introduce a completely new design for the town beach and bring the Jennings Building back into public use, not to mention specific Porthcawl events such as international golf tournaments or adrenaline water sport festivals. I also think it’s great that initiatives such as the harbourside project have been generated from within the local community. The fact remains that the council is committed towards regeneration in communities throughout the whole of the county borough, and I would ask people to work with us as we seek to find new ways of delivering the kind of regeneration that Porthcawl deserves. Councillor David Sage Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council
School Visits Over the past few months I have been delighted to have the opportunity to visit a number of local schools in my constituency. Back in July I opened the new school building in Pen Y Fai following the £4.3 million investment from the Welsh Government and Bridgend County Borough Council after years of planning. It was great to see how much the children were benefiting from the new facilities in their new classrooms. More recently I visited Heronsbridge School in Bridgend, following their glowing Estyn report. The hard work carried out by the staff, praised in the report was clear to see. At the beginning of October, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Coychurch Primary School, which has also received a very good inspection. Last week, I was honoured to open the new look sixth form study space, Oriel and Lle Dysgu in Bryntirion Comprehensive School. I enjoyed meeting many of the pupils including head boy Scott Ennis and head girl Rebecca White. It is very important to me that as the Assembly Member for Bridgend I engage with people all over the county and school visits are a great way to meet staff and students.

FEATURES The Gunpowder Plot
Royal British Legion News
In May 1604 Robert Catesby rented rooms adjacent to the House of Lords and, along with over a dozen conspirators, instigated a plot to kill James I and replace him on the throne with Elizabeth, James’ nine year old daughter. One of the conspirators was Guido Fawkes, an explosives expert. The conspirators learned that the lease on a cellar under the House of Lords was up and they duly acquired it. By March 1605 gunpowder stored in barrels had been placed in the cellar and the conspirators dispersed, arranging to meet up again when parliament reopened in November. Unfortunately for the conspirators one of their number, Sir Francis Tresham, wrote to his brother-in-law warning him not to attend the opening of parliament. That letter was passed on to Robert Cecil, Secretary of State, and at midnight on Tuesday the 5th November 1605 a party of armed men found Guido Fawkes guarding twenty barrels of gunpowder. Robert Catesby was shot while evading capture. The other conspirators were arrested and, on the 30 and 31 January 1606, were hanged, drawn and quartered. However, Guido Fawkes escaped being drawn and quartered alive because he jumped from the gallows, breaking his neck. Mansel Jones Author of Making Movies: A Max Gwyther Mystery http://manseljones.com

FEATURES Through Christian Eyes Hi folks, Some things we see in the cross of Jesus. First one is the love of God. The bible says that Jesus loves us to the uttermost (John 13 v 1). The word uttermost here means he loved us as much as a person can love another. You can’t love any more than this. It is an infinite, unconditional love. This love is demonstrated in the cross when Jesus dies for our sins, paying our debt to a holy God so we can have peace with him. Great love! Another one is restoration. The NT is full of encouraging verses of Jesus restoring what was lost (eg. Colossians 1 v 20). C.S. Lewis said humanity was like a sick tree that needed a healing branch placed into it to heal its brokenness and sickness. Jesus is that healing branch. The bible says that God’s ultimate plan is to bring about a new heaven and earth (new creation – 2 Peter 3 v 13) and a new humanity living in it. That new creation will never end and will be characterised by righteousness and a relationship with a loving God. No more sickness, death or crying! We get in by a personal relationship with God through Jesus. Now that is something to search for. Neil Harvey
Christmas At The Talbot Santa is coming to the Talbot! Santa will be switching on the Christmas lights on Friday, 5th December at 6pm. After switching on the lights, Santa will return back to his Fairy Grotto in the Talbot for children to meet him, receive a small gift and also, the opportunity to have their photographs taken with him. All free, and whilst the little ones are waiting, refreshments will be served by volunteers of the Talbot. Make a note in your diary now! The events for the Christmas season are gradually filling up. Not many seats available for the Showtime Cabaret and New Year’s Eve parties, but sadly, the Theatre Club’s visit to the Lion King in the Millennium Centre and Cinderella in the New Theatre, are fully booked. We will be serving Christmas lunches on Friday, 12th December and Wednesday, 17th December – these are both almost full. Porthcawl Townswomens Guild News As usual, an interesting time in Guild with all our groups in action - craft group, literary group, walk and luncheon groups. We very much enjoyed visiting Duffryn House and Gardens now it has been taken over by the National Trust. A work in progress but well worth a visit. On the way home from Duffryn we had lunch at The Old Post Inn. Very good value - order two meals and get the cheapest free! We always like a bargain! I and vice-chair Jean Dorrington were guests at the 80th Birthday Luncheon of Bridgend Guild at Bryngarw House - a great occasion. Last months meeting was our Harvest Tea with home grown entertainment and names were taken for our Federation Christmas Lunch and Carol Service. www.seasidenews.co.uk
This month we meet on November 12th, 2pm, at All Saints Church Hall when we shall be having a craft demonstration afternoon. Do come and learn new skills. For further information phone (01656) 772157. Dorothy Thomas
Cosy Up By The Fire Now that the nights are drawing in, it’s time to make the house cosy and snug. Although balmy summer days are blissful, there are good things about chilly weather too, and it’s a real pleasure to snuggle up on the sofa in front of a blazing fire. Topstak specialises in stoves, and stocks a wide range of styles in both traditional and contemporary designs. Jotul, one of the market leaders, has a stylish white enamel model in its range that’s petite and compact - perfect if you don’t have a great deal of space to play with. The Harrie Leenders hanging fire is an exceptional piece of kit, not only is it suspended from the ceiling, it is rotatable, so that the fire faces you wherever you are sitting in the room. Clearview stoves, carefully crafted in Shropshire, are another great favourite, and the selection encompasses a variety of designs and sizes. One of the most important elements of creating a decent fire is using seasoned wood - damp wood creates more smoke than fire, and will also blacken the glass on the stove. Topstak can deliver seasoned, environmentally sustainable logs to your doorstep whenever you need them. Topstak Interiors www.topstak.co.uk 01446 771 567
Securing Our Signal Box Since the break in at the signal box many people have approached us offering to contribute railway lamps and general artifacts. Our response has been “many thanks but we have to sort out security first”. However whilst visiting the pet shop in Pyle recently we had a promise of help and Richard Rees and Wayne Dodd arrived at Cefn Junction with a vanload of welding gear and several hours later we have a much more secure Signal Box. Many thanks to you boys and to many others who have offered their help at this time! Our Death and Disaster nighttime walk proved a great success and was enjoyed by over twenty intrepid walkers. We are grateful to Vernon and the Deacons of Siloam Chapel for the permission to visit this charming Chapel, which has played such an important part in Cefn’s history. No ghosts, but the dangers of the ironworks furnace were obvious to all! Finally our 100 club, which supports the running of the Signal Box, was drawn at Cefn Athletic, and the results...David Mason £300, Janet Stenner £100, Brenda Davies £50. FEATURES U3A Open Day Spectacular Success
Local Shop Support Royal British Legion
Porthcawl U3A opened its doors to all at its Open Day held at Trinity Church on Saturday October 4th. A full turnout of members were on hand to welcome the public. Groups of interested newcomers were invited to sample the activities of the 35 interest groups that meet all over Porthcawl throughout the year ranging from sing-a-long and painting, to philosophy, food in Britain and several Languages. Each group activity is led by an experienced convenor. These very special convenors are the backbone of this progressive organisation and they were on hand in force throughout the day to advise on all aspects of our activities. A full programme of events took place. The presentations started with the Writing for Pleasure group providing a sample of its excellent work. Then followed four sketches performed both in Latin and English showing their versatility also. Our Play Reading group showed the quality of their work and the Storytelling group ended a most enjoyable day on a high note. A film was also shown featuring many activities with the walking group particularly prominent For further information please contact Clive Mort on 01656 783663 It is not too late to join us. Home & Colonial has been transformed with a military cargo net adorned with poppies and personal military memories suspended from the ceiling marking the anniversary of the start of World War I and raising money for today’s armed forces. Money raised will go to The Royal British Legion to help its work with today’s service personnel. Customers who donate £1 receive an old style brown price ticket on which they write the name of a family member who has been in the armed forces or served in a conflict. The ticket is then attached to the cargo net. You can do this up till Armistice Day. “We wanted to commemorate the First World War and remember those who sacrificed so much on our behalf. That’s why we are raising money specifically for the Royal British Legion’s ‘Be the Boss’ program which is part of its Civvy Street scheme to help ex-service personnel find selfemployment after they leave the forces. “The human interest stories have been so touching, there have even been tears. We’ve had people remembering family and friends as well as in recent conflicts such as Afghanistan.” Home & Colonial’s cargo net has been such a hit that the Royal British Legion is looking to take up the idea themselves and use it in other locations. Parkinson’s Support Group Boat Trip The Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group was started 4 years ago, and to celebrate we took a boat trip. Travelling from the Swansea Marina up the river Tawe, we passed where the copper was smelted. Surprisingly there are still signs of some of the old building along the riverbank. Our guide showed us slides of how it looked in the earlier days. After the boat trip we made our way to a restaurant on top of the tower, on its 28th floor. There we ate and saw great views of the marina. The day was great success and enjoyed by all. Our meetings are held on last Friday in the month in the Unitarian chapel schoolroom, Nottage. FEATURES Mercury & A Meteor Shower
Inner Wheel Club Of Porthcawl
We don’t often get chance to glimpse the planet Mercury because its orbit keeps it very close to the Sun and it’s not much bigger than our own Moon. However, at the beginning of November there is an opportunity to see it in the south-east around 30 minutes before sunrise. It’s the brightest object in that part of the sky so you should have no difficulty in identifying it. Later in the month there is a good opportunity to see shooting stars. The Leonids are best known for producing great meteor storms in the years 1833,1866, 1966 and 2001. These outbursts of meteor activity are best seen when the parent object, comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, is near perihelion. Unfortunately it appears that the Earth will not encounter any dense clouds of debris until 2099. The best we can hope for now until the year 2030 is peaks of around 15 meteors per hour and perhaps an occasional weak outburst when the Earth passes near a debris trail. The Leonids are usually bright with persistent trains and this year they peak on the night of November 17th/18th. The Geminid meteor shower will peak on December 13th/14th when we can expect 100 meteors an hour. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society
Our first meeting after the August break was held in early September when we made plans for future events leading up to Christmas. On November 5th a pre-Christmas coffee morning will be held in the Atlantic Hotel. Tickets will be available at the door. Three members had special events to share with the club. Peggy Jones has become a grandmother for the second time. Elizabeth Jones has had a new grandson. Janice Jones’ eldest granddaughter has been accepted at Cambridge University. At our October meeting Angela Gorman, a retired nurse, spoke about the charity of which she is the founder member. Moved by a television programme filmed in Chad, Central Africa, she decided to address the tragedy of women dying every year in pregnancy and childbirth. She illustrated her talk with photographs and two short films, given with firsthand experience of the problems facing mothers in Africa. On behalf of the club, President Gill presented Mrs. Gorman with a cheque, and a large bag of jumpers for the babies in Africa. African Forget-me-Not flower lapel pins, were sold to raise funds for the charity. Eileen Thomas

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Newton WI News In our October meeting the guest speakers were Andrew Davies and Michael Jeffrey, two brave and dedicated members of the Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team (formerly Bridgend Mountain Rescue). Based in Bridgend they are a voluntary organization who are an independent charity and self funding. There are forty active members on call 24/7. The teams work with Police, Air Sea Rescue Helicopters, Cave Rescue, Coast Guards, RNLI, and Dog Searchers. The training period is three years. This year the organisation celebrate their 50th year. All our ladies enjoyed this most interesting and informative talk. Our Christmas fare will be held at Trinity Church Hall on November the 7th, 10.30am - 12.30pm.There will be craft, jewellery, cake stalls etc. Come and join us for tea /coffee and pick up a bargain for Christmas. Also in November we are holding a social evening to commemorate WW1, with food and music of that era, music provided by Mr. Mike Boyle on the keyboard. For further information on Newton WI ring Pearl Mason on 772657. M. Freeman
Porthcawl WI News At our last meeting our WI were given a talk by Steve Jones from the Air Ambulance Wales. He told us about the good work they have achieved and how they get to an accident scene in minutes - saving many lives that would otherwise have been lost. He also explained that they are doing more and more to improve the service all the time. This made for a very interesting WI meeting and members present thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. We have quite a few events coming up - our anniversary meal in the Fairways on the 20th of November, Christmas Fayre to be held at the Trinity church on Friday 28th November, and also our participation in the Christmas tree event at All Saints Church Hall during the first week of December. In November’s meeting we also have Judy Harvey coming to show how to make Christmas table decorations. So come along and join us - we have all these events and more for 2015. You will be assured of a warm welcome. We meet on the 4th Thursday of the month at 2pm, All Saints Church Hall. For more information ring Gwen on 783238. Gwen Stapleton
Kenfig WI News On the 29th September we held an enjoyable social evening, full of fun, laughter and lots of chatter. Also, the committee provided delicious refreshments. At our October meeting the speaker was Mrs Lillian Charles who gave us an insight into the meaning of old nursery rhymes. This proved to be extremely interesting although some of the interpretations were quite unpleasant to hear. It certainly brought back many childhood memories to us all. It is a fact that nursery rhymes are much less used today which is rather sad and it would be a shame if they disappear from memory altogether. As we move towards Christmas an important event in our calendar is The Friends of Kenfig Christmas Concert. This year it will be held at 7pm on 9th December at Cornelly Community Centre. The programme will feature the fantastic choir ‘One Seaside News | 38
Achord’ together with readings, carols and entertainment from various members. Entry fee is £3, which can be paid at the door. Proceeds from the concert will this year be donated to Y Bwythin Newydd so why not come and join us and enjoy a great festive evening at the same time contributing to a very worthwhile cause. Anita Jones, Press Secretary
Mynydd Cynffig WI News Tuesday 14th of October 2014 was the monthly meeting of Mynydd Cynffig WI held in our usual venue The Talbot Institute. We had a good turnout of members. The meeting was chaired by Marjorie Goode, our president, with the minutes read out by Enid Rymer, our secretary. New business and dates for our diary were discussed, these included walks, competitions, demonstrations, the Christmas Tree Festival our Christmas outing and Christmas party with our president organising a coffee and mince pie morning. We seem to have a full calendar up to Christmas and beyond. Next year is the 65th year of Mynydd Cynffig WI and members were asked about ways to mark this occasion. With WI business over, our speakers were Paula and Clair - their topic being an insight into our social responsibility. It was informative and enlightening and our members organised a food parcel, which they accepted for their food bank. We finished the meeting with tea and biscuits. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 11th November and our talk is by Sally Maybey on My Master Mind Experience. Shall we keep a place for you? Christine Callaghan

Sker WI News The October meeting was held recently and president Nora Williams welcomed the members present. The Bowls team did well in the recent competition and came second. The speaker for the evening was Ms Deana Owen on “Children in Zambia”. Friends of Monze is a small charity based in South Wales and offers support to residents of the town in Zambia. The group was created after Deana retired as a nurse and travelled to Zambia to help residents in Monze in the growing AIDS pandemic. She visited homes, schools and support groups developing a strong connection with the people. She experienced first hand their need for better medical and educational equipment. Money has been raised to build a better school for the children. When not in Zambia Deana is busy giving talks and fundraising. Our Christmas Fayre is coming up on Friday 21st November at Trinity Church Hall from 10-12noon. The speaker at the next meeting is Mr Stephanas Mastoris on “The History of Christmas Cards”, to be held on November 13th at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage at 7pm. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

Finance Pensions - The Good News Keeps Coming Following the changes to pensions introduced in the Budget earlier this year, the government has announced further significant changes to the tax treatment of pensions on death. These changes will make it possible for money purchase pension funds, including those already in drawdown, to be passed on to beneficiaries free of tax. What is changing? Currently, it is only possible to pass a pension on as a tax-free lump sum if you die before age 75 and you have not taken any tax-free cash or income from the scheme; otherwise, the fund is subject to a 55% tax charge. The Chancellor has announced the government’s intention to abolish the charge. From April 2015, if you die before the age of 75, you will be able to pass on your pension fund to your beneficiaries tax free. If you die above the age of 75, whoever inherits your pension can leave the money in the pension plan and pay no tax, any money withdrawn will be subject to tax at their highest marginal rate. What happens if you are already drawing your pensions? If you are currently in income drawdown, you should be able to benefit from the new rules from April 2015. If you have used your pension to buy an annuity, you’ll be unaffected by the changes. An annuity will stop upon your death unless you have chosen to protect the income. How do you nominate a beneficiaries? All pension providers should allow you to nominate your beneficiaries, when you start the pension or at any subsequent time. It should also be possible to easily change beneficiaries easily if your circumstances change. This nomination is not usually legally binding; however, it does make your pension provider aware of your wishes. Chris Ellis One Life Financial 01656 785700
At Last, Help For The Over 50s We’ve all seen them on the TV - the adverts for over-50s Life Assurance, with the offer of a free pen or similar. Yes, they offer a small amount of cover without medical questions, so useful for some people. The problem is, when you look at the small print, you see that you are likely to get back less than you paid in, so what’s the point of that? Well, worry no longer, as a major Mutual UK insurer has recently launched a fantastic new product, where you will get more than you paid in, still without medical evidence, and which offers a funeral planning option, as well as other very welcome features. The plan has been received the highest award in the industry, achieving a 5-Star rating by ‘Defacto’ (which rates the insurance industry’s products) for all that it offers. Premiums are very affordable, given the market for which the product is intended and the product and service provided by the company is first class. You can apply in the morning and be covered by the afternoon, in many cases, so offering speed as well. So, if you are over 50 and simply want to find out what the product can do for you, call us on 01656-782545 and an Adviser will call out to see you at no charge to discuss. At the time of writing (15 October) there is a fresh report out today, stating that as many as 50% of all mortgage-holders expect to still have a mortgage as they go into retirement, a very worrying thought. Furthermore, 15% of all 66-70 year-olds still expect to be paying off their mortgage, as well as all the Seaside News | 40

Pension Legislation Is Changing – Get The Right Advice Many people are by now aware that pension legislation is changing come April with the need to purchase an annuity being replaced with the ability to have freedom and autonomy to take withdrawal from pensions as individuals see fit. Over the past few months we have seen an increased number of people asking us to look at their final salary schemes, as they would prefer the freedom and autonomy of control over a prescribed level of income that is available under their existing arrangements. At Bartholomew Hawkins Chartered Financial Planners we are not only qualified, but authorised and regulated to offer advice in this area. Should you feel that this is something you would like to understand more about, then please do not hesitate to contact us. One word of warning, for many this opportunity is not available after April, so advice is needed sooner rather than later. It is also worth noting that for many who anticipate being able to access their schemes from their existing providers come April the 6th, the functionality is not available under the majority of cases. This article is for information only and does not constitute financial advice. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Bird Watch: Feeding Birds
It’s time to start putting the garden to bed before winter truly makes itself known, this month we will have plenty of frosty nights, so protect your pots with bubble wrap or hession, strawberry plants also need a bit of love in the cold so cover them 2inches deep in straw or hay, they’ll repay you next summer! Remember to drain your hoses so that they don’t freeze and burst (don’t think you will need them again this year!) Check your climbing plants are tied securely to their supports before it gets too windy (cheerful isn’t it) using old stockings or tights is a good idea as they don’t cut into the plant, if you twist them in a figure of eight between the stake and stem it acts as a good buffer. November is peanut butter lover’s month in America – but did you know fried spiders taste like nuts – wonder who discovered that. Yuck! We have a quiz in the Green Hall Tuesday 25th at 7pm, bring your own booze and nibbles and join us –you’ve got to be in it to win it! Oh wouldn’t we all be a lot healthier if vegetables smelt as good as bacon! Chris Early
The types of food you offer your garden birds will have a big impact on the species that you attract. It’s now widely advocated that we provide food year-round. Here’s a brief guide to some foods and the birds that you may attract: Water: All birds need water, whatever the weather or season for drinking and bathing. Peanuts (always feed from a metal mesh feeder): Blue, Coal and Great Tit, Nuthatch. Nyger: Goldfinch, Siskin, Lesser Redpoll Sunflower hearts: Greenfinch, Chaffinch, House Sparrow, Bullfinch. Laleston Gardening Clubs Report As I write this month’s report the weather has started to change, nights drawing in and leaves starting to fall. It was a time to reflect on what a busy, successful year the club has had at our annual AGM. Margaret, our President, reflected on what a busy fund raising year we had with the plant sale and various coffee mornings. The trips were well supported and thanks expressed to all members. Our Chairman, Glan, thanked Patrick our Secretary for all his hard work and also our Show Secretary Pauline for her hard work in organising another fantastic show this year, giving thanks to all members who have helped this year. Pauline announced that this years Show was the best with the highest number of entries, 523 in total, and we were blessed by glorious weather and thanked all who helped and supported us on the day. A warm welcome is extended to Ron who has joined the Committee this year, look forward to working with you!. A note for your diary is the Christmas Fair on Saturday 22nd November. On that note enjoy your planning for next year and don’t forget to order and plant Spring Bulbs! Simon J Nelson

Don’t be left out in the cold if you’ve lost a loved one this winter, we can help... Unfortunately it is a fact of life that many of us will lose a loved one this time of year. This emotional rollercoaster is difficult enough without having to worry about winding up a relative’s financial estate. The administration of an estate is often a time consuming and frustrating process, particularly if it is a complex matter, and consists of a number of stages:1. Is there a Will? The first step is to determine whether or not there is a Will. If there is, then this will appoint a person(s) who will be responsible for dealing with the estate, the Executor. If there is no Will, then the law of intestacy will determine who the responsible person is, the Administrator. 2. Valuation The next stage is to ascertain exactly what assets are in the estate. This will involve writing to any financial institutions, instructing surveyors to value any property, and liaising with accountants regarding the valuation of any business assets held. 3. Inheritance Tax Once the value of the estate has been calculated, it is then necessary to account to HM Revenue and Customs for the payment of any inheritance tax which may be due. 4. Application for Probate On completion of any tax affairs, the person responsible for the estate can then apply for Probate (or Letters of Administration if there is no Will). This is the Court Order which proves that the Executor is entitled to deal with the estate and give a receipt for the proceeds of the various assets. 5. Closure of assets Following receipt of the Grant of Probate, the person responsible for the estate can then cash in any assets, deal with the sale of any property and settle any debts that the deceased may have had. During this period it is also necessary to wind up any income tax affairs. 6. Distribute the estate Only when the Executor is satisfied that all steps have been taken to deal with the above, can they then distribute the estate in accordance with the terms of the Will (or the law relating to intestacy). At Douglas-Jones Mercer, we have been administering estates since 1946, and believe that you should concentrate on looking after yourself when you have lost a loved one, and let us concentrate on the financial affairs. Meditation
Are you sometimes in need of real dialogue? How many times throughout the day do you find yourself discussing with people topics such as the weather, football, work arrangements and Christmas? Does this experience of mundane life seem a little lost? As if there is more to experience and look at. Are there perspectives of your life that you wish to discuss, share or ponder on. Your inner life. This last month we have been contemplating ‘Anger’. We use the contemplative platform of face-book and have been looking at Anger with in our personal lives. Looking at how the body experiences anger, where the signals are received, what external stressors are present and how the mind begins to create stories that gives us the impetus to act. The impact of anger and our social responses to anger. The role of denial in our inner world. There is good news, people have given examples of the ability to work with anger and accept it. You can join in on the conversation by joining our facebook page ‘Bridgend Meditation Community’. Contemplation is an important aspect of meditation. Neville Evans

Historically known as ‘the disease of kings’, with Henry VIII a known sufferer, gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis, which has long been thought to be caused by an overindulgent lifestyle. The condition used to be rare among young people, but research suggests it is becoming more common with the obese getting it a decade earlier than healthy weight people. Men are more likely to develop gout than women because their uric acid levels rise during puberty and remain higher than women through adulthood. It usually first appears between the ages of 30 to 60 and becomes more common with age. The condition is characterised by sudden onset of acute pain, redness and swelling in the joints such as the big toe. “It is protein-rich foods that cause gout,” dietitian Helen Bond told MailOnline. Other risk factors include obesity - partly because of extra pressure on the joints and chemical changes as a result of the fat - and heavy alcohol consumption, particularly beer, which is high in purines, and spirits.energy. Learn About Reflexology & Enjoy The Benefits Some people may think that reflexology is just a foot massage but in fact it’s application uses specific pressure points on the hands and feet to pinpoint and treat ailments. The theory behind reflexology is that vital energy flows through the body, between the internal organs. If this energy is blocked, the area of the blockage will become imbalanced, leading to pain or illness. A reflexologist will aim to work on the corresponding reflex points on the feet and clear those areas. These will feel gritty to the therapist, and is a sign that the corresponding part of your body is congested. Reflexology helps a wide range of ailments, from asthma to musculo-skeletal problems. It is good for emotional conditions, like depression and stress, and many people swear by it as a relaxation technique. It is very useful for preventing illness and keeping your body in top condition. If you would like to book a treatment or practice some techniques on your partner to help them with their ailments I will be running a fun day’s workshop. Please call me to register your interest. Let Me Help You To Help Yourself As the seasons change and winter starts to get ready to take over, we can see the changes as mother nature gets her house in order. She is busy shedding the old leaves and deadwood that has developed over the past months. Busy getting ready for the promise of things to come, moving forward to the joys of new summer. Wouldn’t it be great if we could do the same? Shed all our baggage, our fears, our phobias. Everything that holds us back, makes us frightened or nervous - old habits that hold us in an eternal autumn. Imagine the benefits if you could unleash the dormant power of your mind, shed all those hang-ups and start a new chapter - a new future for yourself. POEMS For Debs Who on earth do you think you are? Looking down your nose your gaze afar. Speaking to me like I’m some kind of child, Your attitude leaves me far from beguiled. I am only here for what I’m entitled to have, So please don’t treat me like I’m just a chav, I am not here through any fault of my own, And I don’t want to listen to your monotonous drone. I have to tell you what I have done, Do you think I find that I find that fun? I won’t just do any old thing, I want something stable, not a five minute fling. I was made redundant if you hadn’t guessed But in this place I’m just another pest! Treated by some like I’m just riff raff, Yes by the highly qualified job centre staff. Mrs S Hamilton-Howell Kenfig Hill
New Road New Road, no longer new but old A place of great history or so I’m told Once a very busy and thriving street Where shoppers galore would tread their feet “Just popping to New Road” my mum would shout “I’ll get everything we need there, while I’m out” There were butchers, bakers, confectioners oh so sweet Restaurants, pubs, cafes where many would meet Shoe shop, post office, newsagents too The regular sound of buses passing through This once great road, always a hive of activity Had its life source removed, oh what a pity Sadly now, only a few shops remain The death of this road a terrible shame Sandy Bay booted, buses re-routed, speed humps how stupid New Road, if like a Phoenix from the ashes, would rise once more That we would see this road flourish as it did before But until this prayerful hope comes true New Road, I’ll always have fond memories of you Neil Matthews Porthcawl Seaside News | 48
Ring 101
At the hate crime poster, I stare. Ringing retorts! Urge me to dial and report! Am I doing right to even care? This blatant, intolerant attack: IS a hate crime of sort. To make sense of this crime, I must ring and dare. Enough of this abusive sport; At my expense; even if life is unfair; It is time these culprits were caught. Quick before this situation turns into despair. Yes, to report them I ought. Such outrage I should not have to bare. These assailants, to court were brought. Tried and imprisoned for such insulting behaviour. Witnesses and victims of hate crime sought. Let justice be the snare - Ring 101 if you care. Anita Griffiths Kenfig Hill

Ultimate Sacrifice
Beneath fields in foreign lands were poppies grow. They gave up their lives for people, country, King. Millions of young men lie sleeping beneath the snow. As for reward they expected not one thing. Those brave loyal soldiers, sailors: and airmen. Not for them to wives, parents, nor family: return. Whose lives ended so abruptly! Rest in Peace Amen. Nor even their poor ashes over mantles in an urn. They are gone but not forgotten, alive in memory. For those who return from battle lucky to survive. Remember those, who forever lie across the sea. Whose scars no longer visible; to forget, they strive. Their comrades in arms they are proud to have met. The sacrifice of the fallen they will never forget. Bridie Banwell Bridgend
They Want To Give Us Messages All Day
I know I cannot see them, But I sense them all the time, And when I ask them questions, They send a shiver down my spine. They will say a few words for others, To confirm I am on the right path, This often shocks the people I am with, And often makes them laugh. Don’t be upset if I give you a message, They don’t come to give us sorrow, Only to confirm your loved ones are ok, And to look ahead for your tomorrow. I work closely with my spirit guides, And open up when it is ok, We have to learn to work safely, Because they want to give us messages all day. David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend
Greetings
It is good to meet you. Chocolate lovers wish to greet you, To thank you for growing Those wonderful beans That are turned into reams Of chocolate delights. It is good to know Your wages, once low, Have now been raised, Through Fairtrade, To let you earn a fair return For hard work done. It is good to know That you and your wife Have improved your life; With the promise of a sale, You can work and plan ahead: Let the children go to school, Minds and bodies fed, Hoping that a future bright, Might expand their world. It is good to see You stand with dignity, Proud, providing for your family. Times are changing, Minds being reached, But the bastions of world trade Are not easily breached. We must continue to fight For what we know to be right. We shake your hand today But reach to clasp the hand Of every small producer, Eager to use his land, To trade, to make his Craft or produce pay. Tell him, ‘Be of good heart, We aim to play our part.’ Hazel Calder Porthcawl

To close the month, a large group of choristers travel independently of the Choir to Tenby for a social, charity fund-raising, musical weekend. St Mary’s Catholic Church on Ewenny Road sees the Choir commence its December programme at 7pm on Friday, 5th in the Annual friendship Concert. The Choir is joined by St Mary’s Catholic School Choir. Tickets from the Church or at the door before the Concert commences. David T Burt, Media Officer
After a period of immense change for the Choir, we are pleased to announce that Alec Brooks has been appointed as our new Musical Director. Alec was our accompanist but has decided to take us on. Alec has conducted many choirs, brass & wind bands and orchestras. Alec is currently Musical Director for ‘Port Talbot Amateur Operatic Society.’ We are so pleased that Alec has taken the helm as he has brought the joy and fun back to our singing. On Sunday 5th October 2014 we participated in ‘The Mayor’s Civic Service of Thanksgiving’ along with a choir from Croesty School at Salem Chapel. Both choirs were greatly received. The young girls from Croesty sang beautifully and so enthusiastically. This was our first opportunity to sing under the leadership of Alec and the feedback was extremely positive. The choir is singing next at an Advent service in St Crallo’s Church, Coychurch at 6:30pm on Sunday 30th November. We are in need of an accompanist to work with Alec. If you are interested please don’t hesitate to contact the Choir for more information. We meet on Thursdays at 7.15 - 9.15 pm in Pencoed Bowl’s Pavillon, Felindre Road. Porthcawl Male Choir News The Porthcawl Male Choir held their 34th Annual Concert last weekend Saturday 4th October at the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl. Featuring guest artist Sophie Evans. The Concert was a great success. With the choristers and the audience enjoying a wonderful evenings entertainment. Special thanks to our Musical Director Mair Jones, Accompanist Richard Davies and also Sophie Evans and her Accompanist Mathew Lewis. Following the Concert the Choir took a well-earned break in Penzance where they were fortunate to take part in 2 Concerts. On Wednesday they were the Guests of the Marazion Appollo Male Choir at Marazion Methodist Chapel where they did a joint Concert in aid of the ‘Shelter Box Disaster Relief’. On Thursday they were Guests of St Buryan Male Voice Choir. At St Buryan Church where they did a joint Concert in Aid of the ‘St Just and District Memorial to Cornish Tin Miners’ sculpture. Most enjoyable and memorable afterglow parties followed both Concerts - typical of the Cornish hospitality. Porthcawl Male Choir will be looking to return the hospitality when return visits can be arranged for both Choirs to visit Porthcawl. Ray Street Secretary Seaside News | 52
Art In Focus This month the focus is on ‘Fair Rosamund’ (1861), by the flamboyant Bohemian artist, Dante Gabrielle Rossetti (18281882): the founder of The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This ‘Brotherhood’ intended to reform English art by rejecting what they considered to be the mechanistic approach first adopted by the Mannerists who succeeded Raphael. Their approach was to return to the abundant detail, intense colours, and complex compositions of Quattrocento Italian art. This is no less apparent than in this exquisite piece, which tells the story of ‘Fair Rosamund’: the mistress of King Henry II, who would visit her by using a red cord to help guide him through a maze up a tower, where he kept her secret from his wife: Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. The Queen used this cord, which we see tied to a rose (symbolic of the King), to find and murder her. Rosamund is depicted as flushed and wanton with her decorative dress about to fall from her shoulders. This, however, is not entirely how the tale unfolded in history. Learn more about this work by attending one of my new art tours: ‘Women in Art’. For more details please email me at josephinelewington@yahoo.co.uk Josephine Lewington MA

Hope you enjoyed the Elvis Festival. Next year it’s going to be known as “Gunfight at the OK Corral” with Wyatt Earp and his posse on security! I caught Jason Fry’s band ‘Tex and the Mushrooms’ live and they played a lot of obscure covers which was refreshing, and also saw ‘Mojomatics’ on top form, as always. It was also great to catch up with an old mate, singer Paul Child, who has sung all over the world, spreading Welsh music and culture to a global audience with his best-selling independent albums. However, it was sad to hear he’s retired from music suffering from a disease I’m well familiar with – he hated the travelling! More on Paul soon. Another singer, Porthcawl’s Laurence Parry, has written a new “Middle of the Road” style song called ‘Remember Those Days’ which you will find on YouTube. The Planet Rock Festival at Trecco Bay on December 5th, 6th and 7th has completed its bill with ‘Magnum’, the Michael Schenker Group, Glen Hughes’s ‘California Breeze’, Joe Elliott’s (of Def Leppard) new side band ‘Down ‘N’ Outs’ and many more top bands set to appear. Check website for tickets. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Picture: Michael Schenker

A Film Maker’s Point of View Sunday 5th October was Tony and Bev’s last day at The Seagull in Nottage and they generously put on a free buffet for their loyal customers to enjoy on the final evening before the pub closed for refurbishment. As they have put such a lot of effort into running it since taking over ten months ago, I felt that some effort should be made to record that last evening of theirs. I took a digital video camera along to shoot a few scenes for posterity – yes, I know, regular readers of this column will wonder why I was using a digital format and not my beloved film, but an evening like this has to have spontaneity and the camera, if possible, needs to be fairly discreet. So those last few hours, when the regulars bade a sad and rather emotional farewell to their hosts, has at least been captured on Mini DV tape and should provide a means of remembering back to the time when two very popular figures in the local hospitality business ran the premises. Everyone wished Tony and Bev well for the future, and the evening was wonderfully compered by the one and only Jamie Paul. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Seaside News | 54
Ever Thought Of Being A Campanologist? Campanology is the art and enjoyment of bell ringing. Did you know, in addition to the tower bells at St. John’s church, it is also possible to ring Hand bells? Hand bells produce a completely different sound and it is a delight on the ear. A Group might play anything from Jazz to Bach - Christmas Carols to Ringing a Change - and all stations between! If you might be interested, reading music is not essential as the notation is presented differently and is easily followed. Practice night is on Tuesday, more information is readily available from Tim Tilt on 07749 254131. The group is re-organising itself so, this is a good time to join. There is a very welcoming atmosphere. Come and have fun making music! John Berry Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

@ The Grand pavilion. The Mid Glamorgan Savoyards will present a charity performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance on Saturday 15th November in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl at 7-30pm. It is, therefore, one of the most popular of these operas. The performance will clearly provide an evening of delightful musical entertainment to remember. Since starting in 1994, the company has raised well over £50,000 Seaside News | 58

PORTHCAWL ROTARY CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL Once again, the Rotary Club of Porthcawl, in conjunction with All Saints Church, will be holding the increasingly popular Christmas Tree Festival. From 2014, the brightly lit trees will illuminate the church and will imaginatively showcase local organisations and societies. During the period of the Festival there will also be a variety of Christmas events put on by local schools and organisations. It will also be an opportunity for All Saints Church and the Rotary Club of Porthcawl to raise money for local Charities. The Festival works by inviting organisations, businesses and schools to decorate the church, by providing a Christmas tree, decorated to reflect the participants’ interests, or a theme of their choice. The only cost to each organisation is the cost of a Christmas tree and decoration, which can be kept by the organisation after the event. Any organisation wishing to participate in the Festival, should

Sport Less Than Two Months To Go For 50th Anniversary Special emphasis this year is being made to encourage all swimmers to raise money, through the ‘Swim’s’ official sponsorship, for their two main charities - Ty Hafan, who offer support to life-limited children, young people and their families, and Sandville Self Help Group, who have built a caring reputation for supporting people and their families during periods of serious illness. Swim chairman, Nicola Willis, commented, “We want to make this a record fund raising event. There are many fundraising events in the calendar and with the help of swimmers we can make this 50th anniversary one to remember for the financial support we will be able to give to our chosen charities. Official ‘Swim’ sponsorship forms will be available locally, via our website, www.christmasswim.org and via the online donating process described on our website”. In tribute to founder swimmer, the late Arlon Owens (Coco the Clown) and long time Swim ‘Father Christmas’, the late David Thomas (Dai Viking) organisers are encouraging swimmers to wear fancy dress costumes in the themes of either Clowns or Vikings to remember just two of the many past committee members who dedicated so many years to building this special event. Porthcawl’s swim is possibly the largest in the UK during the festive period. Ian Stroud
Tap It Out CC Septembers report is dedicated to the 6 iron men in the club who completed the iron man Wales in Tenby. A massive achievement, and I take this opportunity on behalf of everyone, to thank Richard Webster, Julie Webster, James Pugh, Paul Ford and Andrew Mundy in representing the club. For those readers who don’t know the event consists of a 2.5 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26 mile run to finish, and to top that The Tenby course is arguably the toughest in the World. The amount of time and commitment these club members have put into achieving their dreams are herculean. Each athlete has got their stories to tell of the day, but these are a few. James Pugh smashing the swim coming out 15th in a field of 2000. Richard, doing the bike and swim with 1 eye after freezing his cornea, and the run on crutches due to his rugby days. Andrew Mundy deciding to do it 2 weeks before, Julie having to do the training and having to do Richards alphabet hoops after every training session and Paul Ford finishing the event and discovering he’d put his wife’s underwear on by mistake in the morning! Porthcawl Lifeguard News Porthcawl Lifeguard Club has enjoyed another great summer. Our juniors and nippers winning medals and earning points for the club in events along the South Wales coast including two very successful weekends at the Welsh Championships at Aberavon, despite some unseasonably stormy weather and very challenging sea conditions. Late September saw us taking part in the Marine Conservation Societies Great British Beach Clean. We collected and recorded all the litter on a 100m section of Coney beach. We collected 43kg of litter the majority of it plastic, which is slow to degrade and the biggest threat to wildlife along our coasts. Our survey will be added to many others to give an overall picture of the state of British beaches in 2014. We celebrated the end of the season with our annual presentation evening held at the Hi-Tide Inn. This was the bestattended presentation evening in recent years, reflecting on a great summer. The club will continue training on Coney beach on Sundays and at Pyle Pool on Friday evenings throughout the winter.
