LETTERS THANK YOU FROM PORTHCAWL RNLI

Dear Editor, Porthcawl RNLI fundraising and events group would like to thank everyone who contributed to their collection during Elvis weekend. A fantastic amount of £2,158.67 was collected. All proceeds will be used for Saving Lives at Sea. Norah Clarke, Secretary

THE STORY BEHIND THE HIBISCUS CAMPER VAN

Dear Editor, I so enjoyed the photograph of the young ‘Surfer Dude’ in the September issue of the Seaside News. Many residents and visitors will know it was taken inside the Porthcawl subway and Porthcawl Comprehensive School art students created the VW camper van artwork. Twelve art panels were installed but over the years three have been vandalized. Ten years ago many residents complained the subway was dirty, dark and depressing leaving users feeling unsafe so Porthcawl Shout Forum (PSF) sough funding to give it a makeover. Porthcawl Fire Fighters volunteered to clean the walls, the interior lighting was improved and the art students with professional help painted both entrances with large colourful displays of Hibiscus, Hawaii’s national flower. Three years later we returned with a larger Blue Plaque project for the adjacent Station Hill square to recognise its historic contribution to the growth and development of Porthcawl. Newton Primary school children made small Timeline plaques and First Minister Carwyn Jones opened it on 25th September 2015. We are always trying to improve our town and welcome everyone to our open forum meetings held in Trinity Church on the first Friday of the month at 1.30 pm. Gary Victor, Porthcawl Shout Forum 8 | seaside news

A VOICE HAS THEIR PLACE-MAKING MEETING Dear Editor, A Voice for The Future formed 4 months ago with the main goal to, at least, have the opportunity to participate in a placemaking consultation with BCBC, and present our thoughts regarding Salt Lake, prior to public consultations. And on Tuesday 12th October we got this opportunity. The meeting went well, and there were some exciting synergies in both sets of plans. Nevertheless, it was clear that unless we want a very considerable number of houses on Salt Lake the community does need to stand together to protect some of that land for our recreational use; to create a destination for both locals and visitors and maintain, or develop some green space that remains agile and available to future generations. Please see our plans and reference FB for more details. Also check out our short video using the QR code. If you are a group please get in touch as we’d love the opportunity to attend one of your monthly meetings and make sure your views and needs are included. So many have already. Please email avoiceforthefutureporthcawl@gmail.com This may be blue skies but it’s been done elsewhere. Why not Porthcawl? Gemma, Porthcawland reference FB for more details. Also check out our short video using the QR code. If you are a group please get in touch as we’d love the opportunity to attend one of your monthly meetings and make sure your views and needs are included. So many have already. THE HYDE OUT - EXCITING UPDATE

NOW IS THE TIME TO GIVE YOUR GAS BOILER A WINTER SERVICE Covid-19 safety procedures in place

Gas • Heating • Plumbing Servicing, Maintenance & Repair Carbon Monoxide can kill! Give your boiler the clean it deserves Gas boiler service from £40 Gas fire service from £25 Gas safety certificate from £50 Legionella risk assessments from £65 1 Hour timeslots so you don’t have to wait in all day. Reliable local service • No job too small Hurray, more Coffee and Cake! In the October’s issue we expressed our concerns going forward at the Nature Reserve, as we hadn’t been given an extended contract after this year, due the not knowing how the café planning was going. However, now they have agreed till the end of March 2022. How exciting! Thank you to the Trustees who have given me this opportunity to provide a service to our community, using my mobile converted horsebox, not only that but has helped 8 small business through a difficult year too! Our first Farmers Market at Kenfig Nature Reserve was a great success. Don’t think the traders quite imagined that it was going to be that busy! Most sold out within the first hour of trading, so if you are visiting be early! Lisa (Double Trouble Coffee), Martyn (Ty Siriol Welsh Pork) and myself have started the KNR Farmers Market with the help of the reserve allowing us to use the space at the front of the Centre for our stalls. We had 20 stalls in October and 27 confirmed stalls for November, which shows that this is a great addition for local businesses and new start -ups, giving them access to a different customer base. We have a great range of produce from local traders, Pasta, Cheese, Bread, Meat, Fruit/ Veg, Fish, Olives and Oils, Smoked Garlics, Honey, Preserves, Welsh Cakes, Brownies, Chocolate, Zero Waste Shop, Tea & Coffee. We really try hard in keeping the stalls as diverse as possible to give the customers a unique shopping experience. We were getting asked about craft fairs, so Ceri the center manager is holding a craft fair inside the center on the 5th December, which will no doubt be just a busy. Cannot wait! So, make a note in your diary first Sunday of the month for the Farmers Market – Food only enquires email kenfigfarmersmarket@gmail.com 7th November, 5th December and 19th December (holding two in December for Christmas!) Looking forward to seeing you through these winter months at ‘The Hyde Out’ through to March. Emma x Emma@thehydeoutcoffee.co.uk

BOOK OF THE MONTH THE MISSING SISTER BY LUCINDA RILEY The Missing Sister is the seventh book of the Seven Sisters series. If you haven’t read the others by this popular author, I would recommend that you start at the beginning of their story with book one, ‘The Seven Sisters’. For those who have read the other books in the series, this story follows all six of the D’Apliese sisters as they search for Merope (The Missing Sister). PORTHCAWL NATURALLY Want to know the name of that flower growing on Locks Common? What is that fossil in the rocks at Rest Bay? How were the sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr created? What is that bird on the rocks? What is that strange creature in a rock pool at Newton? The answers to these questions can be found in a new book by local naturalist Greg Nuttgens. Greg has lived in Porthcawl for over 20 years, and during that time has got to know and photograph the wealth of wildlife to be found around the town. The 80 page book describes the geological and historical processes which have formed the varied landscape of beaches, cliffs, sand dunes, grassland and woods. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, mostly his own, the book can be used as a local guide to rocks, plants and animals to be found in the various habitats. There are sections on Newton and Merthyr Mawr Burrows, the seashore at Newton, Locks Lane, and Locks Common, as well as information about wildlife to be found on the coastal path and in local Nature Reserves. The book can be bought for £8.95 from Sussed in John Street, Porthcawl Museum, Kenfig Nature Reserve, Parc Slip Nature Reserve, or direct from the author at porthcawlnaturally@ gmail.com

WHERE DID IT ALL GO RIGHT? That evening George Best and Miss World laid out the money on the bed of their luxurious hotel room to count it. ... The waiter, still mindful of Best’s early retirement from football, handed over the champagne, looked at the beautiful Miss World, looked at the thousands of pounds and then said to Best: “George, where did it all go wrong?” So often we castigate ourselves with those words of the waiter, how often if ever do we look at our lives and ask ourself, ‘Where did it all go right’? What are you thinking just now? Is it your critical voice or someone else’s? If you are struggling to remember a time when it went right maybe use a little memory jog to remind you once a day, just before you eat a favourite food or sip a relaxing drink or rest in your warm comfortable bed. All of the enjoyable moments that happen so often we forget to notice. So often it is the little daily things that make up our lives. Appreciating what we take for granted enables us to view our days in a new way; instead of lack we have abundance. We are all different. What do you have to be grateful for? Margaret Brown

With Bonfire Night almost upon us, we’re getting ready for our Light for A Life. It will be held on the 5 December at the Hi-Tide in Porthcawl from 4pm but the time may change. The number of people we are helping has increased, so the more we can raise the better. We don’t want to turn anyone away because we don’t have the funds so please do help us to raise money to help us help others. BENEFITS OF LEMON & GINGER TEA Both lemon and ginger contain plant compounds that may help soothe minor bellyaches brought on by indigestion. A warm infusion of lemon and ginger may stave off nausea, especially if you have morning sickness. While there isn’t a lot of research in this area, the hot steam from a cup of lemon-ginger tea may help loosen up congestion in your sinuses, making breathing a little easier. Because lemon-ginger tea is hydrating, it may help stool pass more easily along your digestive tract. It’s also important to make sure you’re getting enough fluids in the daytime. Lemon-ginger tea is hydrating, which helps your body perform its basic functions. There isn’t enough research to know whether ginger has anti-inflammatory effects in people. That said, scientists have found that gingerol, a plant compound in ginger, has anti-inflammatory properties. Read more at: www.healthline.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

NEWS DELIVERING SUSTAINABLE REGENERATION IN PORTHCAWL Later this month, we will be carrying out ‘placemaking’ consultation over our plans for regenerating the Salt Lake area of Porthcawl. This is being organised in line with the Placemaking Wales Charter, which calls upon organisations, businesses and communities to work closely together in order to deliver sustainable regeneration and development. For this consultation to be truly effective, it will be crucial to maintain a realistic focus and ensure each contribution remains valuable and pragmatic. If you would like to see a specific facility, try and take into account issues such as potential costs, how it will be paid for, who will operate and maintain it, whether it meets the identified land needs of the Local Development Plan, and so on. Ultimately, we want the placemaking consultation to find the right balance between what people want, and what can realistically be delivered. This will be an excellent opportunity to work closely together to deliver long-term, sustainable change for the area – change that is both ambitious and realistic, and which meets all of the various planning criteria and legislative requirements that we have to operate within. For more details on how to take part, keep an eye on the council’s website and social media pages. COUNCILLOR CHARLES SMITH Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration Bridgend County Borough Council 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

GP SURGERY QUEUE CONSISTENCY NEEDED Our local GP surgeries are a vital first line of defence against illness. We all rely on the vital work of our GP and nurses to support us when we get poorly, and their dedication to helping our community is extraordinary. But I have had a range of constituents contact me about the variation in service across our community. Queuing systems for phones at the GPs across Bridgend and Porthcawl vary so much. At some surgeries, you can be left having to call tens if not hundreds of times to get through to booking an appointment. We know this just isn’t fair for people, whether patients or those having to handle the phone calls. Having to cope with this extra stress when you or a loved one is poorly just isn’t where we should be, which is why I’m meeting with local GP providers and the NHS trust to ensure we deliver the best service consistently across Bridgend and Porthcawl. This isn’t any GPs fault or about blame - I want to ensure they have the right tools to deliver the best possible service for their patients. If you’ve got an experience of your local GP that you’d like to share with me, get in touch, email: sarah.murphy@senedd.wales SARAH MURPHY MS Member of the Senedd for Bridgend

FUTURE USE OF PORTHCAWL WATERS The deadline for having your say on how the waters around Porthcawl Harbour should be used is fast approaching. The consultation wants to determine if local byelaws dating back to 1953 remain suitable, or whether they need to be updated for modern use. Covering activities such as berthing, navigation, parking, use of the lock gates and slipway, shoreline restrictions, waste, safety, security, penalties and more, the consultation also looks at how far watersport activities such as water-skiing, paddle boarding, swimming, diving, fishing and kayaking should be supported. The area around the marina and breakwater remains hugely popular, but it is also extremely busy. In addition to featuring the main approach in and out of the marina, it features the busiest inshore lifeboat station in Wales. We have already sought the views of organisations such as Porthcawl RNLI, the Harbour Boating Club and the National Coastwatch Institution, but want as many local people as possible to join in too. The survey is available in a range of formats, and you can find out more by visiting the consultation page at the council website, emailing consultation@bridgend.gov.uk or calling 01656 643664. The deadline expires on 14 November, so make sure you have your say. COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

GIVING CHILDREN THE BEST START POSSIBLE Our school modernisation programme is continuing to deliver state-of-the-art educational environments for local children, and ambitious plans are in place for the latest round of new schools and learning facilities. We will soon be carrying out public consultation over plans for building a new two-form entry school for Mynydd Cynffig Primary in Kenfig Hill alongside a new 75-place nursery. This £10.2m investment will provide children with modern school premises instead of the split-site and high-quality modular classrooms that they currently use. At the same time, we want to deliver the first new schools to be built in the Cornelly area in more than 40 years. Plans are in development for a new two-form entry English-medium school, a 60-place nursery, a 15-place resource centre for pupils with additional learning needs, and new facilities for both an enlarged Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr and the Integrated Children’s Centre. In Porthcawl, we are also developing plans for creating an allnew Welsh-medium seedling school as well as a new Welshmedium childcare facility. These ambitious projects symbolise Bridgend County Borough Council’s ongoing commitment towards delivering the best learning facilities that we can provide for local children – look out for more news on these plans soon. NEWS PETS SUFFER FROM FIREWORKS DISTRESS We are well into the fireworks season that starts with Bonfire night and carries on until New Year. There was a time when you only saw and heard fireworks on Guy Fawkes night but nowadays they are being set off for other reasons including weddings and birthdays. Fireworks have a very distressing impact on animals. Polling done by the RSPCA found that 62 per cent of dog owners and 54 per cent of cat owners report that fireworks distress their pets. We all know of owners who have to get tranquilisers from their vet for their pets and who keep windows closed and curtains drawn to reduce both the visual and noise nuisance. And other animals are affected too. Sheep, cattle and horses have been injured by running wild after fireworks have gone off. Some have been burnt by rockets and other fireworks landing on them in the fields or causing fires on farmland. I urge everyone to ditch their own fireworks and instead take their families along to organised displays which are staged in accordance with all the latest safety rules and which mitigate the most damaging consequences of setting off fireworks into the night sky. DR ALTAF HUSSAIN Welsh Conservative Regional MS for South Wales West

WALES NEEDS ITS OWN COVID INQUIRY One-in-four people who died from coronavirus in Wales were infected in hospitals. A politically motivated firebreak. The highest death rate of any UK nation. These are just three reasons why Labour should hold an independent inquiry into their handling of COVID-19 in Wales, but the list is as long as my arm. Instead of admitting mistakes were made and allowing full scrutiny to take place, Labour are refusing to hold such an inquiry. They’d rather their actions be buried in the footnotes of the British Government’s UK-wide inquiry as that will mainly focus on the actions of ministers in Whitehall. But, as I am sure many have already predicted, Labour will inevitably U-turn and shift the blame back on the British Government. They will drum up some cock-and-bull story about being ignored by Westminster and say they’re unhappy with the terms of reference, before finally commissioning a Wales-only inquiry. Mark Drakeford would rather manufacture conflict between the governments in a bid to save face than admit the Welsh Conservatives and other organisations were right to ask for a Wales inquiry. It’s high time the First Minister admits he messed up from the outset and stopped playing games. TOM GIFFARD Welsh Conservative regional Senedd member for South Wales West

BUSY HALF-TERM AT ST CLARE’S

was voted as Chairperson and those pupils that were elected into the Active Wellbeing, Community, Teaching and Learning and Eco departments. Cynffig was walking on sunshine when pupils and staff wore yellow to raise awareness and funds for ‘Young Minds’. Staff decorated their desks and pupils created positivity trees. Well done to the Active Wellbeing department of the School Parliament for organising this important event. This year ‘Diwrnod Shwmae’ - ‘Give Welsh a Go Day’ saw pupils using their best Welsh phrases whilst enjoying Treasure Hunts, Brecwast Bingo and Secret Spy Cymraeg. Diolch Yn Fawr to staff and pupils for making it such a success.

VIRTUAL OPEN EVENING It has been an incredibly busy half term but it’s been fantastic to see school-life return to relative normality. Our pupils learn Spanish from 2 ½ in our Daynurseries UK “Top 20 (Wales)” Nursery where they also enjoy Forest School and optional ballet. Forest School will now be rolled out to our other year groups over the next two years. Spanish and French are taught from Year 7 with Biology, Physic and Chemistry taught as individual subjects so it’s easier to make the right choice when choosing GCSE options. At St Clare’s, we follow the English curriculum for GCSE, which means pupils sit the reformed GCSEs where Grade 9 is the equivalent of A** giving our most talented pupils the opportunity to attain this most prestigious grade. Our GCSE record is impressive year on year and St Clare’s is in the top 5% of top-performing schools for A-Level performance since 2018. Important dates: Year 7 Discovery Day 1st November. Year 7 Scholarship Day 2nd November. Virtual Open Morning 13th November. Admission deadline 26th November. CYNFFIG NEWS It’s been an extremely eventful month with our focus on wellbeing being well and truly at the fore. ‘Wellfest’ , a celebration of wellbeing, was an overwhelming success with pupils enjoying workshops, HIIT sessions and veggie smoothies. Thank you to ATC, British Transport police, Careers Wales, Dads and Lads wellbeing group, Dementia Friends, the RNLI, Fire Service and Careers Wales who provided pupils with valuable discussions as well as strategies and information they’ll use for life. Pupils once again exercised their democratic rights and voted for our new School Parliament. Congratulations to Jessica Dyne who

Once again this year, we are holding our Open Evening for Year 6 pupils ‘virtually’. Prospective parents and carers of Year 7 pupils for September 2022, will be able to access it by following this link on our website from 3rd November:- https:// sites.google.com/ porthcawlschool.co.uk/ pcsopenevening2021/ home This will give them the opportunity to see all we have on offer at Porthcawl Comprehensive School and ask any questions that they might have. Tours of the school can also be arranged by emailing info@porthcawlschool.co.uk. Language teachers from PCS will be visiting the local primaries throughout November to give pupils a little taste of what is to come when they arrive and other transition events will follow throughout the year. Shwmae Su’mae day on 15th October celebrated the Welsh Language. Here pupils and staff were encouraged to start their conversations with the phrase ‘Shwmae’ and to try to use their Welsh throughout the day. Everyone celebrated the day by wearing something green or red and at breaktime, the Welsh Department issued an open invitation to join them for a ‘Bore Sgwrs’. The Welsh rooms were a hive of activity with conversations in Welsh, Welsh games and of course the odd Welshcake or two! Staff participated again in October in the Macmillan coffee morning by baking and bringing in beautiful cakes - we raised £230 for Macmillan Cancer Support. FEATURES FEAR BARKING Barking is simply one form of normal and natural communication for our canines, for which there is always an emotion behind. These include; fear, frustration, excitement, attention seeking or loneliness. The underlying emotion behind the barking has to be addressed, NOT the actual barking. There are slightly different plans for dealing with each because you don’t want your dog to become disruptive or annoying with non-stop barking. Fear barking, which is just a dog shouting ‘Go Away’ from something they perceive as scary, must never be ‘corrected’ (jerked on the lead) or reprimanded (shouted at) in any way. This is because your dog may then associate that bad stuff happens to them when that particular trigger is around, making them double their efforts to scare them away. Note; Triggers can be other dogs, strangers, noises, traffic or anything that your dog feels uncomfortable with. Distance is key, as well as using high value (the really good stuff) tasty treats to change emotional responses to the trigger, as you want your dog to have a positive emotional response to the scary stuff. Dog sees it and thinks ‘Oh yes, there’s that strange thing’ and ignores it, not ‘OMG, there’s that strange thing’ and becomes a Tasmanian Devil! If your dog does bark or pulls you towards the trigger, then you are too close (over threshold). If your dog is unable to ‘listen’ to you or unable to take treats, then you are, again, too close. This is because your dog’s brain is in survival mode and is unreceptive to you or food at this time. DO; • Set your dog up for success. Short training sessions in quiet areas where you can have plenty of space around you are best. • Have your dog wear a well-fitting Y-shaped harness, with you holding a double ended lead which is clipped onto the chest and back attachments of the harness for comfort and safety. • Stay under your dog’s threshold. This is where your dog notices the trigger, but doesn’t react to it. • Quick fire tiny tasty treats directly into your dog’s mouth and use a happy ‘party’ voice. When the trigger can no longer be seen, stop the treats and voice support. • Decrease distance only when your dog is completely happy at the present distance. For a tailored behaviour modification plan for your dog, please get in touch on 07814 400299. Julie Williams APDT IMDT South Wales Dog Training Academy

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO PORTHCAWL

Thanks to the help of Steelwork Santa’s Chief Elf Candy Cane, multi-award winning photographer Adele Morris has managed to pull Santa away from his busy North Pole workshop for a very special visit to Porthcawl. Although uncertainties surrounding Covid-19 are still prevalent this festive season, Santa and his spectacular Family Claus have made their best efforts to provide a safe and truly magical festive experience for all. Taking place over three days, the Ultimate Christmas Experience will take place on Saturday 9th October, Saturday 20th November and Sunday 21st November. Each session will consist of 20 minutes of interaction with Santa, giving plenty of time to discuss all things festive. FEATURES KENFIG NATURE RESERVE

This is a picture of the Hoopoe (Upupa epops) whose visit caused a great stir at Kenfig Nature Reserve over the past few weeks and lots and lots of people visited to view and photograph this lovely creature, last recorded sighting at Kenfig was over 10 years ago! Fungi are popping up all over the reserve, Waxcaps, Parasols, Entolomas and lots more, if you see any please send the warden the location and photos, send them by email or on his twitter page @Kenfigwarden. If you haven’t already heard, our first Farmers Market which took place on the first Sunday in October was an overwhelming success despite the dreary weather and everyone is eagerly looking forward to the next one which takes place on the first Sunday in November. At the time of writing the Reserve are organising a Spooky Spider Hunt which takes place throughout the week (Monday to Friday) prior to Halloween night and on Wednesday 27th October our Warden Chris has arranged a Owloween walk giving visitors the opportunity to search for Owls and other creepy crawlies as the day turns to dusk. Christmas is also fast approaching and on the 5th of December alongside the outdoor Farmers Market there will be a Craft Fayre which is taking place inside the Reserve Centre and is already fully booked!! On the same day we are turning on our Christmas Lights and organising some Christmas Entertainment!! Keep an eye on our website for more information. Finally, there has now been an opportunity to analyse all the responses from our public consultation which clearly indicated that everyone wants to see the continued maintenance of the Dune System, which is notably one of the United Kingdom’s most important conservation sites alongside ensuring the protection of wildlife and the environment. The data also signified that everyone wanted to see the Reserve Centre and its public toilets remain open throughout the year. To enable this to happen the Kenfig Corporation Trust has given permission to Kenfig Nature Corporation Ltd to charge for parking at the Reserve. The decision was not an easy one to make but it is really important that everyone recognises that the initiative will not take any form of profit from the car parking charges and all the money will be reinvested back into the Reserve to ensure it is well maintained and enhanced alongside helping to pay for all the capital charges, utility costs and much needed security measures that go along with running any public facility. There are also long-term ambitions which include enhancing the visitor experience, expanding services and maximising education and employment opportunities to ensure the reserve can reach

32 | seaside news

Email us your feature info@seasidenews.co.uk its fullest potential. All of this comes at a cost and the funds from the car parking charges will of course greatly help this. You can however be reassured that charges will be kept to a minimum as there is a commitment to providing safe and costeffective parking facilities to all who visit. There will also be an option to purchase an annual permit as part of “Friends of Kenfig Membership”. We very much hope that everyone will understand and support this decision and know that the priority must be to preserve, improve, promote and protect this wonderful Reserve that is enjoyed by so many. Kenfig Trust are currently inviting applications for donations. Eligibility is confined to those who reside within the area of benefit. LE CAFE DES LANGUES A little bit of France came to Porthcawl, recently, when the Twinning Association held a coffee and cakes morning at the home of Bobby and Mary Emment-Lewis. Over the last eighteen months, like everyone, we have held meetings via Zoom and kept in touch via a Newsletter so it was lovely to meet up in the garden, and socialise safely, enjoying the September sunshine while looking back on twenty years of visits to San Sebastien sur Loire, France. David Bush quizzed us on our knowledge of languages, by asking us to identify the language from which common English words and expressions such as penguin, sinister, khaki and gung ho originate. Sadly, we were not able to meet up with our French friends this year, but we hope to finally meet up with them in France, next year. If you would like to join us then please get in touch-you don’t have to speak French, and it is a great way to make new friends, both here and abroad. A bientôt. FEATURES BRIDGEND ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

This November marks a special occasion for BAS. Back in 1981, the then called Bridgend Amateur Astronomical Society was founded by three amateur stargazers, Joan Hawkins, Laurie Brophy and Frank Morris. Little did the founders know that 40 years later, the society they built through love and enthusiasm would still be attracting members from all over South Wales! Why not join us and enjoy 12 months of lectures, observing evenings, workshops, family events, discounted courses plus lots more! Membership starts at just £5 for juniors and £20 for adults. Society News The first meeting of our new #BAS40 season was held in September. It was the first in-person meeting the society has held since February 2020! All enjoyed our talk from the Royal Astronomical Society’s president elect, Prof Mike Edmunds. Junior member, Josh Burnett, was presented with a prize of a new pair of binoculars for winning our juniors 40th birthday logo competition! (Pictured & Logo) Our next meeting will take place at Bridgend Tennis Club on Wednesday 17th November 7.30pm with a talk from Martin Griffiths FRAS entitled ‘We are Star Stuff’. So there is now a lot to look forward to including a Christmas lunch and our 68th Birthday lunch in February! Our meeting this month is on 10th November 2.0 p.m. at the Grove Golf club, our new home. We will welcome back another old favourite, Debra John. We are always assured of an entertaining afternoon with Debra! So please come along and find out what she has to offer in her own dramatic style. All welcome. Dorothy Thomas Tel 772157

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL Since our last report we have dealt with a further 8 incidents, including a fishing vessel needing assistance and a number of paddleboarders, surfers and kite surfers in difficulty. A growing trend seems to be persons attempting to cross the River Ogmore on a flooding tide having crossed earlier in the day at low water. We once again urge people to check the tide times, as this area is a known trouble spot and is very dangerous at certain states of the tide. On a positive note and after what seems like years, our long overdue and much-awaited choral evening is back. We are delighted to announce a St David’s Day concert on Thursday March 3rd 2022 at Porthcawl Pavilion. This major fundraising event featuring the famous Pendyrus Male Voice Choir and the Parc and Dare Band, along with a guest soloist, is our main fundraiser of the year and we hope that this will be a successful and memorable evening. Tickets are now on sale from the Pavilion. We are also looking for business sponsorship to help with the costs of running the event. Please get in touch if you can help us in any way. Nick Weedon, Media Officer Porthcawl NCI

COYCHURCH WI There was an excellent attendance at the October meeting chaired by the President Sandra Davidson, and a warm welcome was extended to guest Brenda Margetts. Sandra asked members to forward any photos they might have taken of our activities during the 2020 pandemic. A Quiz Team was organised to represent us at the GFWI Quiz Night to be held at The Hi Tide, Porthcawl on 26/10/21. We look forward to an Italian Theme Evening to be held on 11/11/21 in the Bridgend College Restaurant and, also a Swinging 60’s Night on 23/11/21 at The Hi Tide, Porthcawl. Unfortunately, the Gloucester Quays Christmas Market is not taking place now, so alternatively a trip has been re-organised to visit Bristol Christmas Market instead on 19/11/21. The Christmas Lunch will be held at The Coed-y-Mwstwr Hotel on 8/12/21 with a secret Santa and a free raffle. The next meeting will be held at The Williams Memorial Hall on Tuesday, 2nd November from 1 to 3pm. The guest speaker will be beautician Clare Williams, “Beauty in a Blink.” Guests are very welcome to come along. For further details on future events please contact Sandra Davidson on 01656 669232 or Natalie White on 07581 256026.

PORTHCAWL LIONS Most of us are now active again, attending meetings, enjoying some socialising and planning ahead. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES

After two months meeting in the afternoon with a cup of tea and a biscuit, we decided that we missed our evenings out with a meal too much and so we have gone back to meeting in the Grove Golf Club. We had our first meeting there last Tuesday and had a much bigger attendance, with a delicious meal and the company of people we had not seen for some time. We have however been quite busy. President Gil took a Harvest Basket to the Group Home in Victoria Avenue and a donation has been made to The Sandville. Our place has been booked for the Christmas Tree Festival in All Saints Church and we have had invites from Porthcawl Rotary to join them with some of their functions. President Gil will also be putting the Inner Wheel poppy wreath on the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. Three of our members will be attending the district Rally later on in October in Hirwaun. We have a lot to look forward to before Christmas. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the Inner Wheel our next meeting is on the first Tuesday of November 6.30pm at The Grove, please come along and meet us you will be made most welcome. Liz Jones

In the English language we only have one word for love. Therefore, we can say “I love my spouse”, and in the next breathe say, “I love chocolate”. In the Greek language however they have four different words for love depending on what is being referred to. The words are 1. Storge, which means affection - maybe the sort between family members. 2. Philio, which means something like fondness that can exist between friends. 3. Eros, which is to do with romance. 4. Agape, which means unconditional love. Parents would certainly understand this kind of love toward their children. Agape is the word used in the bible when talking about God’s kind of love. God’s love is unconditional. It is always others centeredness and selfsacrificial. In fact the bible says that God is love (1 John 4 v 8). God loves because he is love. His love reaches out to you whether you know it or not. My encouragement to all this month is to get to know God and this kind of love. It’s this kind of love that could answer the problems we see in the world today. What would the world be like if everyone loved like God? Neil Harvey

HISTORY MEET MY ANCESTORS

My direct ancestor, Gwladys ferch Dafydd Gam ‘the star of Abergavenny’ (1378 – 1454), was the daughter of Gwenllian ferch Gwilym and Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Hywel, otherwise known as Dafydd Gam a man immortalised by William Shakespeare as Fluellen in Henry V. The poets sang Gwladys’ praises. ‘Gwladys the happy and the faultless. Like the sun – the pavilion of light,’ wrote Lewys Glyn Cothi. They also noted her beauty and luxurious dark hair. Gwladys married Sir Roger Vaughan of Bredwardine who died at Agincourt, 1415. Her second husband, Sir William Herbert, also fought at Agincourt. Her two marriages produced nine children. As Lady of Raglan Castle, Gwladys entertained her guests. She also assisted the needy and afflicted, and supported Welsh culture, especially the bards and minstrels. Gwladys died in 1454 and her effigy can still be found at Abergavenny Priory, where she was a patron. According to legend, she was so beloved by her people that 3,000 knights, nobles and weeping peasantry joined her funeral procession. Born into privilege, Gwladys used her position to support the poor and vulnerable, and the arts. And for that she earned her people’s eternal love and respect. ‘Y FFYNON FAWR’ WELL

Since 1808, 11 water wells have been discovered in Porthcawl. Although most are now hidden underground three are very much in view. ‘St David’s Well,’ Moor Lane Nottage, is the oldest holy or healing well. In the 1920’s/30’s the apparent ‘curative’ properties of the well, prompted a local doctor, Dr Hartland, to advocate its use for all manner of ills, especially rheumatism, 36 | seaside news

hemorrhoids and skin disorders. ‘St John’s,’ or ‘Sandford Well,’ in Newton, south of St John’s Church, has been considered magical as well as holy since the Middle Ages. The magic label stems from the fact that when the tide goes out on Newton Beach the water level in the well rises; and conversely drops when the tide comes in. ‘Y Ffynon Fawr’ Well (pictured), which is at the bottom of Nottage Hill, has the cleanest water of the three ‘healing’ wells and at one time provided water for both Nottage and Porthcawl. A poem set in slate on the wall extols the blessing of water. (See translation1st verse)

Following the inaugural meeting of the Porthcawl Urban District Council, in December 1894, it was decided to pump water from Y Ffynon Fawr to many more Porthcawl Houses. Many houses still had to rely on their own wells. Ceri Joseph

BRIDGEND SWIMMING POOL

The swimming pool in Newbridge Fields opened in 1938. As early as 1898 the Glamorgan Gazette commented “Now that the July heat is compelling people to shed all superfluous clothing, swimming and bathing are in their heyday… we cannot repress a regret that there is no public institution in Bridgend where the youths and men of the town could learn to swim.” No mention of swimming women! In 1932 the Gazette reported that a site was being considered. Arguments raged as to whether it should be covered or open-air and, since the council could not afford the capital cost, could and should they borrow the money. In 1934 Bridgend Council applied for the necessary funds, which exposed deep divisions. One side, supported by the ratepayers association opposed the scheme on the grounds of the ongoing cost. The other side was keen to provide modern leisure facilities in the town. One councillor maintained a pool was not needed as children could swim in the river, which did not fit well with the decision not to draw water for the pool from the Ogmore as it was too polluted. The pool – open-air and unheated - was well used until replaced by the Recreation Centre in 1974. FINANCE A SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY A client of mine rang me last week to tell me he’d made a packet on the stock market and just sold out before the October crash that had been widely predicted. You’ll know all about it if your reading this on the 1st November or have a crystal ball. I’m telling you this as my problem now is how do I advise this client given he’s made his money and now he wants me to take over and make him some more. In rugby terms this is called a ‘hospital pass’ or for those who aren’t familiar with this it’s being passed the rugby ball a nano second before Jonah Lomu tackles you! The bloggers and Journo’s are sweating overtime doing their best in predicting how the markets will fall in October but they prefer to use terminology such as ‘Crash’ or ‘Armageddon’ or ‘Blood Bath’ that way if they frighten enough people they’ll create that self fulfilling prophecy as those who panic amongst us run to their keyboards and hit ‘Sell’. ‘I told you so’ they’ll say in that pompous way. They could gently talk about the markets being in decline due to rising inflation or energy shortage or a property blip in China but no they much prefer these ‘look at me’ headline grabbing expletives. How do I advise this client who’s nervous of the markets and gone into cash? Inflation will erode this so eventually he’ll have to reinvest but he’ll never know when and will miss on a market up-tick. In reality if he has a long timeline for investment then he should have stayed where he was but if his duration is short then we have a problem. The only suggestion I can make and it’s not advice is to buy back in later if there’s a dip and hold the

shares long term in the comforting thought that Capital Gains Tax dies with you! This always tales me back to my elderly client who on being asked what was his timescale and duration for his investment replied ‘I don’t even buy green bananas anymore’. Needless to say we agreed to close the file. PHILIP VAUGHAN Director at Abacus Assurance Financial Services Ltd Porthcawl 01656 772222

HOW QUICKLY THINGS CHANGE.... It’s only a few months ago that the stamp duty amnesty was in full flight, so was the furlough scheme, and the interest rate war on mortgages still well alight. Here we are now with Autumn starting to get into its stride and the furlough scheme has gone, people in their hundreds of thousands have seemingly changed jobs for greater security and we have a shortage of HGV delivery drivers, warnings about the possibility of missing out on your Christmas turkey this time and possibly empty shelves in the shops. Further, lenders have started to push rates up even though there are still thousands of deals still available at incredibly good rates – for now. Those people on interest-only mortgages and whose deals are due for renewal between now and the end of the year really out to be looking NOW to ensure that when their current deal ends, they have in place a new deal at a great rate. With some lenders we can book rates ahead for you, ranging up to 3

months, so a chat with us now, really could be in your interest. For those of you with later life lending, there are some remarkably good rates for you too and we’ve been pleased to help many such clients to secure a much better rate than the deal they currently have, so the range of clients we can help ranges from those in their 30s right through to retirement years. If you are looking to make a house move in retirement, maybe from a house to a bungalow and you find that the bungalow for example, is priced higher than the price you could receive for your house, we may well be able to assist you in covering that shortfall, which means you don’t necessarily have to rip into your savings to make the move possible. LEGAL DELAYS IN OBTAINING POWERS OF ATTORNEY

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO ONCE YOU REACH AN AGREEMENT IN RESPECT OF FINANCES FOLLOWING DIVORCE? Negotiating a financial settlement between you is always preferable to arguing things out in Court and asking a Judge to decide how to divide your finances. If you and your spouse can reach an agreement between yourselves, you should always have this made legally binding by obtaining a Consent Order, which is then approved and sealed by the Courts. The Consent order will draw all claims to an end. However, it is not always possible to agree this between yourselves and if necessary, you can instruct help from your solicitors or use the mediation process to assist. Without a Consent Order, there is always a possibility that your former spouse may try to make a claim against your assets, investments, property etc at a later date, there is no limit to how long after the divorce this can happen. You can begin negotiating a settlement as soon as you agree you intend to divorce and you can apply to the Court for a Consent Order at any stage after the Decree Nisi has been granted but it is a good idea to obtain the Consent Order before the divorce is finalised with the Decree Absolute. The Consent Order should include: • Your home - whether it will be sold and the proceeds divided or ownership transferred to one of you; • how other assets such as second properties, savings, investments, business interests and personal possession will be dealt with; • how any pension schemes will be shared; • child maintenance for any children; • who will take responsibility for any outstanding debts; Once the agreement is reached, one party usually drafts the consent order which is then approved by the other party and signed by both parties. You will both need to complete a statement of information form summarising what capital and income each of you have. This application form is sent to the Court together with the signed Consent Order and a £53 Court fee. The Judge will approve the terms of the agreement making sure it is fair for both parties and importantly meets the needs of any children of the family and the parties. The Judge may want to ask a few questions – either in writing or at a hearing. Once the judge is satisfied, the consent order is ‘sealed’ and becomes legally binding.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document which allows you to appoint one or more people to make decisions on your behalf regarding your healthcare or your financial affairs. Delays and complications in registering an LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian mean that it is taking up to twenty weeks to get the legal right to manage financial affairs and/or healthcare decisions of a loved one. This causes stress and inconvenience for both the donor and attorney. Added to this is the fact that even when permission has been granted, different financial companies often impose different rules that make it difficult to access a relative’s bank account and pay bills. The government now says that the process of obtaining a LPA needs to be simplified, and so discussions are beginning to take place to enable that to happen. The proposed changes will allow a person to sign the LPA online, rather than in person, using video or FaceTime to ensure that the forms are signed correctly. At present, there is a statutory waiting period designed to give everyone involved in the process time to object. It is also proposed that these waiting times are cut. Matters will be helped by the creation of an online system giving attorneys a digital pass so that information can be shared between financial institutions enabling attorneys to act without delay. It is proposed that all service companies should be required to deal with LPAs in the same way, with dedicated teams to deal with the administration. Financial institutions should request the same information to enable the LPA to be accepted and acted upon without delay. All of the above will streamline and simplify a complicated process, making it easier for all concerned. MADELINE RAND King Davies & Partners

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

KENFIG HILL MALE VOICE CHOIR

Great to see South Wales’ favourite sons, The Manic Street Preachers, new album, ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’, crash into the best-selling album charts at Number 1! The band has never released a bad album and this one rates up there with their very best. Every song is sheer class, especially the singles ‘Orwellian’ and the current one ‘The Secret He Had Missed’. I’ve been a long-time admirer of the lads. What I like about them most is they don’t follow any music trends and cannot be pigeonholed. It’s a kind of you either like it or you don’t policy that they use which sits well with me. Long may they rule. Another couple of Welsh bands to check out are The Scarlet Rebels and The Autumn Killers, both heavy rock bands but good to the ear. Bridgend and Porthcawl original bands, The Mighty RA and Last Flighty to Pluto, are both busy in the studio recording new albums. I’ll keep you all up to speed with their progress, while former Cardiff-based and ex-Lone Star, Uriah Heep and Gary Moore singer, John Sloman, has a new album set for release. Keep your music news coming. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag Marks

The choir has now commenced rehearsals following the Covid pandemic, in accordance with Welsh Government guidance. Attendance has been very strong, and we have also seen a surge in new members joining, including Mr Phil Grant, Mr Richard Shelton, Mr David Williams, and a return to the choir in Mr Angus Stenner. The choir is very proud to announce our forthcoming Musical Team that comprises of: Rhian Thomas (Musical Director), Stephan Ulberini (Deputy Musical Director), Alex Thomas (Accompanist), and Siân Davies (Accompanist). The choir rehearses at the Choral Suite in the Greenacre Motel, Monday and Thursday evenings, between 7pm and 9pm. New members are always welcome and will be greeted with a great reception from all at the choir. The choir will be singing at Cefn Cribwr Athletic club, in an Xmas Carol (Memory) Service on Thursday December 9th, starting at 6.30pm, where everyone is welcome. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW When an Avro Tudor 5 airliner crashed in the corner of a field in the village of Sigingstone near Llandow in 1950, bringing about an aviation disaster that was to make news around the world, the two neighbouring communities were set in the depths of the countryside, and today they are still rural. This is clearly demonstrated in the present-day scenes of my documentary film about the disaster where, for instance, a field of cows is shown grazing with a disused aircraft hangar left over from RAF Llandow’s wartime days standing behind. There are also glimpses of farmers at work. To emphasise Llandow village’s countrified nature, I recently shot a scene where local resident Emily Reynolds kindly agreed to ride her horse Gus along the main road leading into the village past one of the old houses that have stood there for generations, thus bringing the scene to life. As soon as I set my camera and tripod next to the hedgerow at the side of the road, traffic began to appear from nowhere, pulling horse-boxes and trailers, but Gus behaved perfectly by waiting patiently and two different shots were achieved in a single take. GARDENING LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

November weather usually means time spent in our gardens is becoming less and less. It’s a time when we must make sure tender plants are sheltered and wrapped with fleece, containers should be up on feet or stands to get them off the ground and help with frosts and low temperatures. Bubble wrap where necessary and make sure all is safe and sound for all that winter can throw at us. Roses should be pruned to prevent wind damage and if you have leaves covering your lawn rake them up for the compost or disposal. This is the last call to plant tulips and spring bedding to make for a beautiful display in the New Year. Laleston Gardening Club is still soldiering on with limited activities due to Covid restrictions. We are holding our Annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday 13th November starting at 10am through to approx 4pm. There will be lots of craft items, Christmas cards, Christmas gifts • Grass Cutting and goodies, pickles, preserves • Hedge Trimming • Tree Services and cakes. There will be our • Turfing usual bumper raffle and a warm • Decorative Gravel • Fencing welcome to all! Do come and support us! For further information & details refer to our Facebook page or website RELIABLE LOCAL SERVICE www.lalestongardenclub.co.uk Call Rhys Susan Ford Home: 01656 745560 Mobile: 07854 911166 Mobile: 07805 138819

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB As autumn rapidly moves into winter it’s time to wrap up this year’s growing season and start preparing for the next! It’s planting tulips month! Try to get them in before the end of the month, you can of course plant tulips in pots (lovely), the advantage of this is that they can be planted, pots and all, anywhere in the garden that you need a bit of colour, they are also easily lifted when the flowers are over. (Nice lazy gardening!) Protect roses from wind-rock, prune to a third of their height, to stop them swaying in high winds, this will prevent their roots from working loose in the soil they really hate this! If you are planning a bonfire, check all the rubbish first in case there are toads and hedgehogs hibernating in it, they are great allies in pest control, besides roasted toad isn’t nice! Try installing some solar lights in your greenhouse so you can visit and check your plants on dark evenings, it’s very welcoming as you walk down the path! WARNING: “If there’s ice in November that will bare a duck, there will be nothing after but sludge and muck!” (English folklore) Chris Early
