Open Letter To BCBC

Wartime Memories

Dear BCBC, Over the last couple of years you have been kind enough to keep us up-to-date on all regeneration matters. We have seen long overdue positive change in the construction of the harbour and the coastal path. Porthcawl has always supported BCBC in providing its share of council tax to enable to BCBC to roll out services to the whole authority and we welcome everyone from all towns in BCBC to share the coastline of our wonderful town. However it does often feel that BCBC does not treat all towns in the authority the same. It is already well documented how much Porthcawl pays in council tax and maybe BCBC should be fairer in how it rolls out its regeneration projects in the authority. It has been well published that Bridgend town centre has gained access to 6 million of funding to further the development the town which is good news and over the years Maesteg has had many millions spent on it. Maybe BCBC should list over the last 10 years what successes it has had in each town and show the amount of expenditure to be open and honest with everyone in BCBC. It also needs to show to all towns that they are being treated the same in looking for funding of projects and delivering. I therefore have detailed below some issues we have in Porthcawl and if David Sage can next month in his column come back with the answers on start and completion dates of these projects we will understand how BCBC is moving forward with our town. If you could also list the total expenditure for the last 10 years on each of the town’s regeneration projects in BCBC to be open and honest. Unfortunately many of these issues are 20 years+ overdue and you may need to talk to your staff as they seem to have problems in delivering results to resolve the problems in these areas: - Generally dangerous paving along seafront from the fair to the harbour and appearance of buildings for residents and tourists; - Tarmac beach; - Sandy Bay; - Salt lake. I have not included the habourside project as this not a BCBC project or the Jennings building as you say you have this in hand, however looking at past results you may need to take personal responsibility for these projects to make sure it does not fail like the others. At present we all support BCBC through payment of our taxes and would be very sad if BCBC councillors were not treating all towns the same. However looking at present facts, residents and visitors to Porthcawl are all concerned that a beautiful resort that is BCBC is responsible for seems to be woefully underfunded by the people who have been voted into the authority to look after us. R Jones, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, Although our attention has been focussed in this centenary year on the First World War, let us not forget that 2014 is also the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War ll, when on 3rd September 1939, Britain declared war on Germany for the second time in a quarter of a century. Those of us who have never lived through a world war find it hard to imagine what it must have been like, not only for those who were called up into the armed forces, but also for the civilians, the women who did the jobs of the men in the factories and on the farms, for the men conscripted into the mines, and for the children who had to grow up in a world of bombing raids, gas masks, blackouts, and evacuation to live with strangers in faraway places. Everyone’s life was affected in some way. Despite the passage of time, and although thousands of books have been written about life in the Second World War, there are still many people who lived through those momentous times who have never had chance to tell their story. I very much want to try to capture these memories before it is too late, and put them together in a book. So if any of your readers have memories of wartime life which they would like to share with me, I would be delighted to hear from them. My phone number is 01656 858812 and my email address is malcolmcowper@gmail.com Malcolm Cowper, 18 Hookland Road, Porthcawl, CF36 5SE. Tel 01656 858812

Dear Editor, Is Porthcawl harbouring picturesque decay? With kind regards, Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl

- £2,500 towards the salary of Jo Fearn, a senior social worker in the children’s kidney centre; - 7 iPads and covers to the Morriston hospital self care dialysis units. £2,300; - £2,320 from the walk for life in 2013 to Kidney Wales; - £2,000 from the walk for life 2014 to Kidney Wales; - And finally, £1,582 to the children’s kidney centre Cardiff to enable them to buy special weighing scales, blood pressure machines and an iPad. It has been a fantastic year and our recent Ascot Day raised £2,500, so we are now approaching Morriston dialysis unit to see how we can help them. So once again a big thank you to all our supporters. Judith Hurst, KRUF Porthcawl

Picturesque Decay

Dear Editor, Thanks to the generosity of the people of Porthcawl and district in 2013 to 2014, Porthcawl KRUF (Porthcawl branch of Kidney Wales) has been able to give donations and support in the following ways:

O

Dear Editor, As a resident of Victoria Avenue, Porthcawl, I have received a letter outlining the proposal to introduce seasonal pay and display along parts of the seafront. I am very concerned with the potential consequences of this proposal, as parking congestion is very likely to move to the side streets in these areas, including Victoria Avenue, and residents will find it increasing difficult to park. The letter highlights the proposal aims: - Relieve congestion in Porthcawl. I would be interested to learn what assessment has been made to determine whether this proposal will achieve this aim. I am unclear as to how the introduction of ‘pay and display’ as proposed will deliver any benefit to congestion “in Porthcawl”. I would be grateful if you could forward the congestion assessment against which this proposal should have been developed and what method will be used to judge whether this has been successful. - Regularize parking in the side streets. Based on my knowledge from living in Porthcawl for 50 years and in Victoria Avenue for 10 years, I fail to see how ‘pay and display’ will regularize parking, in my opinion it will do exactly the opposite and lead to much greater unregulated parking in the side streets. Please confirm that if the pay and display proposal is put forward, it will ONLY been done so in CONJUNCTION with a residents’ parking scheme and not before. I’m glad to note that one of the reported aims for the ‘pay and display’ proposal is not income generation. May I therefore assume that the money generated from the parking fees (once costs are deducted) will not be fall to BCBC, but perhaps be guaranteed to benefit Porthcawl. Please could you provide the following information concerning the finance arrangements for this proposal (if I need to raise this question under the Freedom of Information Act let me know): 1 - costs to implement ‘pay and display’ proposal; 2 - estimated running costs; 3 - planned arrangements for the income generated under this proposal. Giulian Hill, Porthcawl

As another school year starts, we extend a very warm welcome to our new members of staff, and to all our new children, we know you will be very happy here. The new soft surface in the outdoor classroom was laid throughout the holiday, partly funded by the P.F.A.’s cake sales, sponsored walk and Kenfig Trust. All parents are welcome to join in the fundraising, and every penny spent is for the benefit of our children. Year 5 and Year 6 pupils have been visiting Cardiff City Football Club as part of a literacy event; they also had a tour of the stadium and dressing rooms! Our Reading Cafe for Reception and Guided Reading sessions for Years 3 and 4 boys have commenced, these well attended events allow parents to spend time supporting their children in the school day. Our ‘after school’ clubs have started; there is a club for all pupils from Reception to Year 6. We will be celebrating Harvest Festival with an assembly on the 23rd October; all parents are welcome to attend. Our Little Acorns enjoyed a pyjama party, complete with chocolate milk! Finally, congratulations to Kian Lamont and Ellie Stimson, they have been chosen as Head Boy and Girl, very important roles! AJ Pritchard – Parent Governor

KPC Youth has been shortlisted for the Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2014 in Bridgend County and, through public voting, has the chance to be awarded a grant of up to £300. KPC Youth would use the grant to help fund towards its open access evening provision for young people in the borough aged 8+, and help them access a wide range of activities, advice, information and support. KPC wants to ensure young people have better opportunities and life and alternatives to hanging out on the streets and the potential dangers of boredom e.g. anti-social behaviour, drug/alcohol misuse. Votes can be made for KPC by SMS, text VOTE CXC to 61119, or Tweet support #commfund CXC, via www.lloydsbank.com/communityfund or in a local branch of Lloyds Bank from 2nd September to 10th October 2014. The local good cause that receives the most votes in each community will receive an award of £3,000, with the other groups receiving £2,000, £1,000 or £500 depending on the votes received. Please support our good cause – every vote will help! Alison Mawby Email: kpcyouth@hotmail.com www.kpcyouth.com Tel: 01656 749219 / 745399

Hello again. It is so good to be starting another new school year, and on such a high: our Key Stage 4 (GCSE) results this summer were the best in Cynffig’s history, with significant increases in every measure used to assess schools’ progress. At our annual presentation evening on 11th September it was literally ‘standing room only’ as we packed the hall to celebrate the whole spectrum of pupils’ achievement over the last year, and to share their success. It was THE best way to launch the new term. However great our outcomes, though, we look forward, not back. We have just welcomed one of our largest Year 7 cohorts for many years, and our numbers seem to grow every day as parents exercise their right to choose the best school for their children. As I write this, we are looking forward to meeting some of next year’s potential Cynffig stars at our open evening on 30th September. It will, I know, be yet another occasion on which the unique spirit, ethos and energy which epitomise the school will instantly be recognised and understood by all who come to enjoy the evening. I am SO excited about the coming year. Hannah Castle, Head Teacher

WELCOME TO THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE NURSERY The Old School House Nursery, is a “home from home”, a place where children will feel safe and secure, where they are looked after by staff who are not only well qualified, but who genuinely care for their young charges. Finally and of equal importance, our nursery is the ideal environment for early learning development, a place where children learn in an atmosphere of fun, sewing the seeds for their future educational development. We believe that close links with parents are essential, as children feel more comfortable and secure being left with ‘friends’ rather than strangers. This Philosophy of partnership with parents is the foundation that underpins all of the activities and information provided on this website.

SCHOOLS A Warm Welcome To New Faces At St. Clare’s School The start of the autumn term was even busier than usual for staff and pupils at St. Clare’s School this year, as we welcomed over 70 new pupils through our gates. Many pupils and staff from St. John’s School have now joined our community and have already begun forming friendships that are sure to last a lifetime. This is a historic period for St. Clare’s School and the new members of the community are already having a tremendously positive impact on various aspects of school life. Our recent Macmillan coffee morning was a perfect way for new parents to meet existing members of the St. Clare’s family and get together over a coffee and a slice of cake. All money raised on the day went to Macmillan Cancer Care, a cause close to many hearts here at St. Clare’s School. Our Senior School rugby teams are already feeling the benefits of having more pupils in each year group. The boys beat Rougemont School in two rugby matches during the first week of term, and are now looking forward to a healthy season of fixtures against other local schools. Despite the growth in the number of pupils at St. Clare’s, our focus is still on individualised learning, and helping each pupil to achieve their full potential. Our class sizes remain small enough to ensure that strong academic, pastoral and extra-curricular support can be offered to each pupil. Now that term is in full swing, pupils throughout the school are looking forward to a variety of school trips, such as the Duke of Edinburgh expedition, and a theatre production of “Romeo and Juliet” in the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff. Simon Antwis, Headmaster

New Safe Routes To School Pupils at Porthcawl and Tremains primaries have plenty to celebrate following the recent announcement by Minister for Economy, Science and Transport Edwina Hart that they are to receive new safe routes to school. Both schools have worked in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council, Sustrans and the Welsh Government to carry out a great deal of work which has been instrumental in the development of the £722,000 project. The pupils produced school travel plans and researched ways in which children get to and from school, taking into account factors such as traffic speeds, available crossing points, dropped kerb locations and different access routes. With work already underway on new safe routes for Cynffig Comprehensive and Corneli Primary, the initiative promotes physical exercise, health awareness and the importance of leading active lifestyles. Secure cycle shelters will be established at all four schools along with road safety and cycle training for the children. On a related note, the new consultation on free school transport is also underway, and will run until 22nd December. You can take part by filling in a bilingual questionnaire at www. bridgend.gov.uk/consultation, request a copy via post by calling 01656 643664 or pick one up from your local library. Porthcawl Comprehensive School Here We Go Again! We are now into October, Summer is past and after celebrating our best ever A level results, all at PCS have settled back into our usual routines. We welcome almost 200 pupils into Year 7, including almost 30 pupils from out of our catchment area. With a further 25 pupils joining Year 12.

The Annual Golf Day was held at The Grove Golf Club. Over 20 teams participated, (including several pupil teams), and the Friends of the School raised in excess of £1500. The event was won by Clay Shaw Thomas for the second year running, so well done to them and thanks to you all for your continued support. Just before we broke up, we held the Summer Music Concert, which involved all ensembles and various solos ranging from popular through to opera. For many it was their last concert, so thank you for everything and good luck with your next endeavours. After sell out performances during the Summer term with the Annual Young Playwrights’ Festival, where over 100 pupils wrote, directed and performed their own plays, attention is now turned to the Annual School Show. I am delighted to announce that this year the pupils will be performing Grease in the Pavilion at the end of January, and auditions are already taking place to find the next Danny and Sandy.

WRU Rugby School

The school, under the direction of Mr Davies (PE Department), has been awarded “WRU Rugby School” status. At a recent assembly, Mrs Hunt received the award from WRU Development Officer, Tom Cole. He was joined by Ospreys players Morgan Allen and Lloyd Peers, who himself was a former pupil at PCS. The players held a question and answer session which was thoroughly enjoyed by the abundance of budding Ospreys players amongst the audience! The day ended with a ‘Festival of Rugby’ involving 5 teams of pupils, and much to their delight, one team of teachers, participating in a touch rugby tournament. It was great fun and enjoyed by all. We look forward to an exciting rugby season ahead. www.seasidenews.co.uk

The end of the month saw the Annual Technology Awards Evening which celebrated the success of our Technology Department. Awards were made at each year group and for the best examination pieces. The imagination and technical expertise of the students is quite something, and James Dyson had better watch his step! On 5th September, PCS undertook an extremely ambitious project – taking a whole school photograph. Fortunately, it was a beautiful morning, which was just as well, because the whole process took about 2 hours! Whilst the pupils basked in the Indian Summer sunshine, they were organised into year groups and height order with military precision by the photographer and his 4 assistants. The staff were soon to be given the same treatment, and perhaps required a little more discipline than the pupils who behaved brilliantly! Years 10 and 11 were photographed first, followed by the 6th Form, Staff and Years 7, 8 and 9 who were all marched onto the enormous framework together. Magically, the two pictures will be blended together to produce one whole school photograph – no one will ever know! Having welcomed new students, I conclude by welcoming new staff. The following have joined our teaching staff; Mrs Sugunendran and Miss Fair, (Chemistry), Dr Hunt, (Biology), Miss Curtis (RE), and Miss Evans, (Humanities). I am sure these teachers will settle into our school, and I am confident they will make an excellent contribution.

Should anyone wish to learn more about our school, please visit the website on www. porthcawlschool.co.uk or telephone on 01656 774100. Andrew Slade Headteacher Seaside News | 17

News Time For An Out-Of-Season Tourism Strategy After a late sunny flourish in September, the nights are properly drawing in, the clocks are about to go back and we’ll all be heading indoors to await the onset of autumn. At least that’s how it used to be. These days, we are getting a lot more used to seeing large numbers of visitors outside of the traditional six-week summer holiday window – a welcome sight for both tourism operators and local economies as a whole. Of course, if you’re lucky to take time off during an Indian summer, that’s great. But more and more visitors see the appeal in visiting during a spectacular autumn, or for incredible sights like the waves we saw breaking off Porthcawl Harbour at the start of the year. It is time that the Welsh Government turned its attentions to catering for these visitors, and providing strategies that would help seaside and other tourism businesses to make money at non-traditional times of year, should they wish to do so. The Scottish Tourist Board made a great “Seasons” advertising campaign a couple of years back, showing the country’s beauty all year round, and Wales should think of doing the same. Public Toilets For Newton Beach I am backing a campaign to bring public toilets to Newton beach. This has been launched by two local councillors - Ken Watts and Graham Walters. They have been in talks with a local landowner who is thinking of providing a loo as part of another development at the beach. If this goes ahead, it will save Porthcawl Town Council the expense of installing an automatic toilet – which was what was being proposed. Porthcawl is an important seaside resort and of particular interest to me as Shadow Tourism Minister. Wales’ unique Coastal Path runs along Newton beach so more people than ever are visiting this part of the town. They need to know that proper public conveniences are available. Age Cymru is also campaigning for more public toilets as older people are cautious about going out unless they are certain they can access facilities. Staying at home can increase feelings of isolation and loneliness and it limits chances to maintain fitness levels. If the private initiative comes to nothing, then I hope Porthcawl Town Council will step into the breach and provide this facility. It will save a lot of distress and embarrassment for visitors who may find themselves in desperate need of a toilet. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com Seaside News | 18

Porthcawl Chamber of Trade What is it? Well it is a non-profit body of local businesses in our town who are united together to form a wider voice to get heard about local issues to business in our town. Our aim is to help work locally with our Town Council and in turn with BCBC for the greater good of the Porthcawl, making it a more pleasant, interesting place to visit, shop eat and stay. Over the past few months the Chamber has been undergoing a change with new people becoming involved and taking on projects and positions on the committee to ensure this old establishment of 150 years will continue into the future with the passion of its predecessors. We have this year so far, been involved with putting on window displays for the PGA Golf Tournament and have also supported the vintage buses that ran during that weekend, which were very popular with locals and visitors alike. It is hoped this could be done again for the Elvis Festival. For more information on how to get involved visit our website and make an enquiry we will get back to you. Becoming A Dementia Friend I recently took part in a Dementia Friends session in my office along with members of my staff. Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative that aims to give people an improved awareness of the condition. The sessions aim to improve public knowledge of dementia, by helping people understand what living with the condition might be like, and the small things that they could do to make a difference to people living in their community. We participated in a number of exercises aimed at helping us understand the affect of dementia on people’s everyday lives. As a result I have signed up to show my support for Dementia Friends, and am encouraging people in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend to do the same too. With a growing number of people living with dementia, it’s more important than ever we all have a better understanding of the condition. If you are interested in becoming a Dementia Friend or helping create more communities that are dementia-supportive, go to www.dementiafriends.org.uk to find your nearest information session or to volunteer as a Dementia Friends Champion. Porthcawl`s Multi-Award Winning Estate Agent Local estate agent Peter Alan has noticed that the local property market is looking stronger than this time last year and an increased number of people are starting to move home. Christine Armsby, Manager of the local John Street branch, commented, “It is great to see the market is gradually improving since this time in 2013. One of the key reasons for this is that is that sellers are now more realistic about what price to expect for their home. The result of this is that properties are marketed at an accurate price, and so attract more interest from buyers. We’ve also noticed an increase in the number of tenants registering on our mailing list, however the number of rental properties currently available falls short of this high demand, therefore this really is a great time to consider becoming a landlord.” Peter Alan also offer a range of lettings services in order to meet the needs of all landlords. Peter Alan offer a fully managed service; let only service; and the unique product ‘PayDay’. PayDay provides payment certainty to landlords by continuing to pay the rent due on the same day every month, even if the tenant has failed to make their payment. (Terms & Conditions apply) Peter Alan was recently crowned the Best Letting Agency in Wales for the third consecutive year by the Sunday Times as well as being named the Best Estate Agency in Wales, again for three years running. The Peter Alan network allows unrivalled geographical coverage to promote properties to prospective purchasers. All properties are advertised online on both Peter Alan’s own website and on national property portal sites including Rightmove and Zoopla. In addition to this properties are also advertised in branch and in local newspapers. Christine continued, “Our aim is to offer excellent value through high standards of service in order to help people to buy, sell or rent their property as quickly and as effectively as possible. We are delighted to have been able the agent of choice to help a large number of people move home during 2014 and we look forward to helping even more people find their perfect home to buy or rent in the coming months.” Peter Alan currently need properties for waiting buyers and tenants throughout Porthcawl.

News Porthcawl’s Unique Character & Heritage Restoring Key Historic Buildings I hope you all made the most of the glorious late summer weather that brought crowds flocking to Porthcawl. It was great to see people enjoying the last of the sunshine with an ice cream or watching boats move in and out of the new marina. People often talk about the town’s unique character and heritage, and this is exactly what we’ll be seeking to restore through the likes of the Townscape Heritage Initiative, our plans for bringing the Jennings Building back into public use and the introduction of further improvements – look out for more details on each of these very soon. Something else to look out for this month is the annual ‘Stoptober’ campaign which encourages people to quit smoking. Bridgend County Borough Council, Halo Leisure and Public Health Wales have teamed up to promote the initiative, which challenges smokers to go a whole month without a cigarette find out more at www.stopsmokingwales.com We are also supporting #Pledge4Plastics, a new national campaign which encourages households to recycle one extra plastic bottle or container each week to help cut down on the amount of waste sent to landfill. Visit www.pledge4plastics.co.uk or the recycling pages at www. bridgend.gov.uk for more details. Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

This month sees the launch of the Porthcawl Townscape Heritage Initiative which, over the next five years, will see a number of historic buildings around the harbour and square restored to their former glory. Heritage Lottery Funding, together with contributions from the council and Cadw, will mean that more than £1m will be available for this exciting scheme. We’ll be working with building owners and local organisations on the sensitive repair and restoration of premises, structures and open spaces, all using traditional materials and methods. It will be fantastic to see buildings including the former Knights Arms public house, Customs House and the Lookout Tower restored in line with their original condition. As well as undertaking conservation work to these buildings, we’re looking to find new uses for them too. The Townscape Heritage Initiative will also involve a study of the wider town’s heritage and character, and local people’s knowledge will be vital to this, so please look out for any ways you can get involved. This initiative will help us to create a first-class 21st century seaside resort that retains the character which has made Porthcawl such a popular place to visit over so many years. In the fortnight period I was back at Westminster in between the summer and conference recesses, the prospect of Scotland voting to end our 307-year-old Union dominated discussion. Even before the three party leaders agreed to cancel Prime Minister’s Questions in favour of travelling to Scotland to campaign, it was clear that the overwhelming majority of people in Westminster were desperate to keep our Union together. As well as spending time on the phone to Scottish voters during some of my spare time at the weekend, I also did my bit to contribute to the cairn of stones being built at the Borders by my colleague Rory Stewart. I was proud to be able to send up a stone from Porthcawl to help show that all parts of our United Kingdom want to see Scotland remain with us and for us to work together to build a better future. It has become something of a stereotype to point it out in recent weeks, but in every conceivable issue – defence, the economy, foreign affairs, energy and climate change – we really are better and stronger together, and I for one hope we celebrated a ‘No’ vote on 18th September.

FEATURES New Horizons Crosses The Orbit Of Neptune

Porthcawl Town Twinning 15th Anniversary

The Pluto-bound New Horizons spacecraft has crossed the orbit of Neptune. That is its last major crossing en route to becoming the first probe to make a close encounter with Pluto, which is expected to occur on 14th July 2015. The piano-sized spacecraft, which was launched in 2006, reached Neptune’s orbit - nearly 2750 million miles from the Earth - in a record eight years and eight months. New Horizons’ milestone matches precisely the 25th anniversary of the historic encounter of the Voyager 2 spacecraft with Neptune in 1989. Some scientists suggest that Neptune’s major satellite Triton, with its icy surface and cryo-volcanoes, is a Pluto-like object that Neptune captured into orbit. Scientists recently re-worked Voyager’s observations of Triton and used them to construct an improved global colour map -- further whetting appetites for a Pluto close-up. There is a lot of speculation over whether Pluto will look like Triton. Like Voyagers 1 and 2, New Horizons is also on a path toward potential discoveries in the Kuiper Belt, which is a disc-shaped region of icy objects past the orbit of Neptune, and further parts of the outer Solar System. Clive Down, Bridgend Astronomical Society

Porthcawl became officially twinned with Saint-Sébastiensur-Loire in March 1999. The Twinning Charter between the two towns was signed when a party of over 30 people from Porthcawl travelled to Saint-Sébastien, and again in April of that year when Porthcawl welcomed visitors from Saint-Sébastien. Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire is a town roughly the size of Porthcawl and is situated on the opposite bank of the River Loire from the city of Nantes, the historic capital of Brittany. On the 26th August, 36 members including the Mayor of Porthcawl Cllr. Sean Aspey, travelled to Saint-Sébastien to celebrate our 15th anniversary. Nearer Christmas we shall hopefully be involving the town traders in our reindeer project – which is based on a children’s story written by the Mayor of Saint-Sébastien, Jöel Guerriau, who is also Senator for the Loire Atlantique region. We are planning to have this serialised in the local press - so watch this space. It will also involve a competition for younger children. For further information and to read the full text of this and other reports please see our website which has seen over 100,000 hits in three years. Rotary Christmas Post The Rotary Club of Porthcawl is happy to announce that plans for the Rotary Christmas Post are going well and that the ‘posties’ have now chosen the design for the stamp and have made arrangements with ten local outlets where the 25p stamps can be purchased and cards posted. The stamp was designed by Christian Walters and will be available to use on Christmas cards posted to CF36 addresses between 25th November and 15th December. The Rotary Club of Porthcawl will announce the location of the ten local stores in the next issue of the Seaside News. The club is very grateful for the goodwill of the stores and also to the sponsorship offered by Walters Shoes and T Elwood Deere and Son. Ivor Williams

Through Christian Eyes We are adopting a dog through Dogs Trust. We are told she has had a difficult life and was found stray and in poor condition. On examination she also had a previously broken leg and a small cancerous tumor. We are told she has a tendency to steal food if it is left unguarded on tabletops, and will need to learn some other new behaviours. But despite knowing all these things we have chosen to give her a new home and new start. We have decided to call her Ruby. Likewise, the Bible says God knows all about us, our problems, failures and weaknesses, but is still willing to receive us into His family and give us a new start. Ephesians 1:4-5 says: “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” It’s never too late to have a new start, and God the loving heavenly Father is willing to receive you, help change and integrate you into His family. What are you waiting for? Martin Gillard

Pupil Turns Tables On Teacher When the Y Centre wanted to thank Ann and John Murphy for their donations of artwork over many years a pupil of Ann’s turned up to do the honours. David Emmanuel thanked Ann for her encouragement and direction when as a pupil he was unsure of his future career. At a small ceremony David also thanked John and Ann for their many contributions of art which are displayed in the Y Centre. On behalf of the YMCA he present Ann and John with a thank you certificate and unveiled a panel in the Coffee Lounge. John’s paintings brighten the walls of the Main Hall and the Coffee Lounge where a sculpture of his stands in the window, whilst Ann’s hand embroidered banners and panels enhance the Coffee Lounge and the stairwell. At Christmas her banners line the entrance to Santa’s Grotto. All the art work can be seen in the Y Centre at any time. There is also an exhibition of art depicting WW1 by Silures Art Group who meet in the Y Centre every Wednesday evening. John Berry

FEATURES Coffee News

Life With The Porthcawl Lions

People enjoying Porthcawl’s coffee culture are now discovering a new service provided by the Porthcawl Shout Forum in various premises called the “Coffee Break News” which gives a short, colourful and interesting public report to residents of the forum’s business and objectives. It also commemorates the Shout Forum’s ten years of voluntary work following the Welsh Government’s call for the over 50 age group in Wales to become more actively involved in local affairs that affect their lives and community. Shout quickly became successful with its public open forum style meetings held on the first Friday of every month at 2pm in Trinity Church and officers deal with all tiers of the Welsh and local government, public services and company management on behalf of residents and many are pleased to visit Shout as monthly speakers. People often comment “where today can you regularly meet and ask questions of our First Minister, Police Commissioner, Older People’s Commissioner and Health Board Executives other than at Porthcawl Shout”. We hope the Coffee News will inform a wider residential audience of our community projects and initiatives and generate interest to come along and see what is being done in Porthcawl by its older residents. Gary Victor

September has seen Lion members busy with the weekly car boot sales every Sunday at the Rest and some very successful book sales in John Street. Some members went to visit the local food bank, which the club supports on a regular basis and were very impressed with the work of the charity. Porthcawl Lions are also looking for ways to support the Porthcawl Museum, which they feel is a central part of the town and an asset to the community. Members will be out with their collecting buckets at some time during the Elvis Festival and already they are busy planning for Christmas: as usual Santa will be in his grotto for the four Saturdays before the big day, so there will be plenty of opportunities for all the boys and girls to visit him to tell him what they want for Christmas and receive a present from Santa himself. Boxing Day means the Lions’ annual fun run, open to athletes (and non athletes!) of all ages. The course, which is just under 5 miles starts and finishes at the Hi-Tide. If you feel you could help Porthcawl Lions with any of their events or are interested in the work of the Lions generally, please telephone Don on 01656 788583. John Cosson

Autumn /Winter At The Talbot With autumn now here, and Christmas fast approaching, members of the Talbot are busy booking the various functions being held during the last few months of 2014. We begin with a Remembrance Service lunch, after the service at the Monument in Kenfig Hill on Sunday 9th November. Then the Christmas season begins with our Winter Showtime on Saturday 6th December for £12 per head. Our members also have a choice of two days when they can tuck into a Christmas lunch, some even attend both: Friday 12th December and Wednesday 17th December, each costing £6. Our bingo players celebrate Christmas with a session of bingo and a buffet party (no charge) on Friday 19th December. For the second year running, we are holding a community New Year’s Eve party, when for just a £5 cover charge, party goers can bring in the new year with their friends and family, and enjoy a good evening. Why not book a table? For more information on the above (we have office space to hire), please contact the office on 01656 749754, 07792 089394, email Talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher Seaside News | 26

Have you noticed the splendid display of summer bedding flowers in the boat as you enter Porthcawl on the A4106 from Tythegston? The boat is an iconic landmark and many folk have commented on what a pretty entrance it makes to the town. The planting and maintenance has been undertaken by Sustainable Wales & SUSSED volunteers (with the support of Christina Rees, whose house backs on to the boat). This coming winter, we are hoping to adorn the boat with attractive fairy lights to welcome everyone to the town, just as we did last year. The only problem is that our boat has a sprung a leak and is sinking fast! In fact, it’s falling apart. Does anyone out there have a small boat or dingy they could donate as a replacement? It doesn’t need to be seaworthy but it does need to be free! Transport can be arranged. Please call in to SUSSED in James Street (by the bandstand) or ring on 783962. Mynydd Cynffig WI News

After our short summer break it was lovely to meet up again with fellow members at our September meeting when there was indeed much to catch up on. Once the formal business was completed our speaker for the evening was introduced. Rosemary Scadden gave a presentation on “how to wear scarves”, beginning with a brief resume on the history of the scarf, its practical and aesthetic uses and the shapes and materials used in its production. This was followed by a demonstration of the numerous ways in which the scarf can be worn in order to complement an outfit. Members were the given the opportunity to practice with the scarves, learning that it is essential to consider the shape and material before deciding how it is to be worn. The whole presentation was interesting and useful to the fashionable ladies of today. We now expect our members to arrive at meetings showing off their recently acquired skills! The vote of thanks was given by Gwenyth Jones followed by our usual refreshments and chat. We have several events to look forward to in the coming months including our Celebration Birthday Dinner on 13th November. We are always pleased to see new members and anyone interested please contact Pam on 01656 742149. Pam Redmond, Secretary

Tuesday 9th September saw Mynydd Cynffig W.I. holding their first meeting after the summer break. We had a good turnout; the meeting was chaired by Marjorie Goode, minutes read and signed off. The many activities listed in our newsletter were discussed and members decided which they would attend. Our interest group has been enlisted in the making of the Christmas tree decorations for the Christmas Tree Festival in Margam Park. The ladies entering the Federation Quiz organised their transport. Marjorie informed members that February 2015 will be our 65th anniversary and suggested that we could perhaps mark the occasion with a meal. Photos has been sent from our visitors from Glyn Hir W.I. who attended our Ascot Day and were passed around for the members to see also a photo of our W.I. taken at the Margam coffee evening. With the business over we welcomed our guest speaker Mr Don Llewellyn who gave us a great talk on “A life behind the camera”, which was a trip down memory lane, showing us slides of famous celebrities on both sides of the Atlantic. The meeting drew to a close with tea and biscuits. Next meeting on 14th October so call in and meet us... Christine Callaghan

Sker WI News Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild News As I write this in the middle of September, we are enjoying beautiful weather -I hope as you read this it is continuing! In August we had an enjoyable afternoon tea at the Grove Golf Club, just a chance for a chat as we don’t hold a meeting in August. We had a busy meeting in September planning our Autumn Fayre which will be held at the Atlantic Hotel on 29th October at 10am and is in aid of the local Alzheimer’s Society. Do come along and support this very good cause. Future dates with Cardiff Federation were announced and we had our usual newsletter from our twin guild in Mansfield. Our speaker was Ms. Rhiannon Gamble telling us of the history and recent developments at Dyffryn House and Gardens which we were due to visit later in the month. Our meeting in October is on the 8th at All Saints Church Hall at 2pm when we will be celebrating the harvest with a stall, a tea and entertainment. Visitors welcome. Dorothy Thomas

The September meeting of Sker WI was held recently and the president Nora Williams welcomed members back after the summer break. The speaker for the evening was Captain Jones who worked on cruise ships after the end of WW2. He was a Naval Cadet and went to Cardiff and London Universities to help his career. He travelled all over the world and the passengers included many famous people and royalty. The stories he told were many and varied. Most liners had a ships cat and one was named Nelson because he had only one eye. At the age of 32 Mr Jones trained at Harvard Business School to run a fleet of ships and did so for over 25 years. Part of his life was spent in Norway before retiring to the UK. There is a visit planned to the New Theatre in Cardiff followed by a meal. We have a variety of speakers to look forward to, and at the next meeting on Thursday 9th October Ms Deana Owen will talk on “Children in Zambia”. We meet at St David’s Hall, Nottage at 7pm and anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

No meeting was held in August as it was holiday month, instead we held a mystery trip to Carmarthen for some retail therapy. Unfortunately the weather was rather changeable. Our September meeting saw a full house. Our President Pearl Mason opened with Jerusalem followed by the monthly reports. The highlight of the evening was a delicious fish and chip supper to celebrate harvest. This month our Walking Club, organised by Shirley, are taking a trip to Cardiff and Cardiff Bay, via bus and boat and of course some walking, with lunch to fortify us for the return journey! Our Luncheon Club this month will meet at the Fountain Inn, Aberkenfig for an afternoon of eating and chatter. Anyone wanting further information phone Pearl Mason on 01656 772657. You can be assured of a warm welcome on the first Wednesday in every month. M. Freeman

Porthcawl WI will be celebrating its 2nd anniversary in November, and are looking forward to another year. New for this year is the formation of different groups whereby members of similar interests can get together, and this can also be a social gathering as well. The book group is on the second Tuesday of each month, a whist group on the second Friday of each month, and a walking group on the third Monday of each month. There is also a craft group on each Wednesday afternoon at 2pm. This will take part at our president’s house. This is in preparation for the Christmas Tree Festival in Margam Orangery on 3rd December. We have all this and more, plus you will be assured of a warm welcome. Any enquiries ring Gwen on 783238. We meet on the fourth Thursday of every month at All Saints Church Hall at 2pm. Gwen Stapleton

Finance What’s In Your Basket?

Trust In Trusts

A well-constructed investment portfolio will contain a collection of different assets, sometimes referred to as a basket. The spread of assets held within your basket should be sufficiently diversified. Diversifying your assets helps spread risk as you are lessening the potential for losses. If you had all of your money invested in one asset, sector or region and it began to drop in value, all of your investments would suffer. By investing in assets that aren’t related to each other (known as low coloration), the overall risk is reduced whilst one part of your investment portfolio may be falling in value, the others may be going in the opposite direction. It is possible to diversify through investing in different markets, countries, companies and asset types. The spreading of risk can give the investor some peace of mind but it will not lessen all types of risk. Diversification helps lessen what is known as ‘unsystematic risk’, such as drops in the value of certain investment sectors, regions or asset types in general. However, there are some events and risks with which diversification cannot help. These ‘systemic risks’ include interest rate movements, inflation, wars and recessions. This is important to remember when building your portfolio. If you would like further information about constructing a diversified investment portfolio, please do not hesitate to contact us. Further changes at One Life: In a previous article I mentioned that we were looking to introduce new members to our team and I am pleased to announce that Mrs Helen Wardman has recently joined us. Helen brings with her a wealth of administrative experience which I’m sure will help to enhance the high level of service that we are committed to providing our clients.

If you asked anyone what they consider to be their greatest asset (this is excluding the obvious, members of the family) they are very likely to say that it’s their home – the place that they have paid for, worked hard to improve and which they strive to enjoy as much as possible. It is their special place, their castle. Yet, for something that we all cherish so much, at the same time we pay so little regard to ensuring that we do all we can to protect this most valuable of assets. Why do we do this? Surely it can’t make a lot of sense to put our most worked-for asset at risk, when we could do something to protect it. Over the years in this business, I have been asked on a great many occasions, what can be done to protect the home. How do we do it? What can be done? The cost of setting up a trust can actually work out to be very much less than the potential loss that could be suffered by NOT putting such measures in place. Too many people fail to realise that mechanisms like trusts are there precisely for the purpose of protecting the asset(s) in question. Like everything in life, of course, there will be a cost attached where you are reliant on an expert to put appropriate measures in place for you. Using an expert to put the correct trust(s) in place can pay huge dividends. Cambria Financial has teamed up with Golden Charter Legal Services (the UK’s largest funeral plan provider and first-class legal services provider) to ensure that their expert is able to assist YOU in whatever your needs may be. Call us today, on 01656-782545, to make your enquiry in confidence and we’ll arrange a home visit for you – it could be one of the best decisions you make this year.

Have You Been Made Redundant? Have you been given a lump sum? What will you do with it? Invest in a place in the sun, your children’s future, train for a change in career, an early retirement, or a rainy day? Where to invest? That depends on many factors, and how much risk you wish to take with your cash. There are various options. One is an Individual Savings Account (ISA), detailed below. Since July this year, individuals are able to invest up to £15,000 tax-free into an ISA, either by paying in bit by bit (e.g. monthly) or invest in one go. You can invest in a cash ISA which typically pays an interest rate of around 1.75% per annum (source: Nationwide ISA September 2014) or alternatively you can save over the longer term in a stocks and shares ISA which can either provide an income or capital growth. What seems like ‘today’s great idea for investment’ is usually just that. Always seek professional advice before investing. Our philosophy at Bartholomew Hawkins Chartered Financial Planners is long-term diversification.

Bird Watch: National Bird Vote

October is the second month of autumn, so beware of frost. Bring inside tender plants such as geraniums and fuchsias. They will happily live, and maybe even flower, on a windowsill in the kitchen brightening up the oncoming dark winter days! Again it’s time to rake up never-ending leaves from the lawn (an arduous task made bearable by the wonder of leaf mould!) A good tip is to run them over with the lawn mower, shredding them up, they rot down much quicker this way in the compost heap or in black bags – lovely stuff! Plant containers and hanging baskets for winter colour, underplant primulas and pansies with spring flower bulbs such as narcissi, iris and tulip with a miniature conifer or euonymus for structure. It will look fab in the spring. Did you know the world’s biggest pumpkin weighed in at 2032 pounds - American of course - need a big garden for that! We have a Halloween party on the 28th for little and big witches and ghosts, in the Green Hall 7-9pm, prizes and pumpkin soup! Remember when buying new plants “a favourite of birds” means don’t plant it anywhere near your car or washing line! Chris Early

You can help decide which bird will become Britain’s national bird by voting for six birds by 31st October 2014: www. votenationalbird.com. Will any of these garden birds get your vote? NB BTO is not organising this vote.

Deadline date for the November Issue is: Wednesday 15th October

Margam Country Park Bat Blitz To celebrate International Bat Night Margam Country Park opened its doors late into the evening on 30th August to welcome bat enthusiasts to the biggest Welsh bat night event for 2014. There are 18 species of bat in the UK, 10 are found in the park. International Bat Night celebrates all things batty promoting bat conservation across Europe. The park, along with support from the council’s Countryside and Wildlife Team and volunteers, ran three simultaneous events all contributing to bat knowledge in the park. Funding for the event was provided by Natural Resources Wales. Volunteers were trained to run a bat walk; families were amazed at the bats seen on the public bat walk. A highlight was the spectacular display of Daubenton’s bats feeding over the lake. Meanwhile, 20 professional bat surveyors positioned around the castle to carry out the largest survey ever attempted in the park, results recorded eight bat species including rare Lesser Horseshoe bats. Margam Country Park is keen to highlight these wonderful species and will be running more bat walks in the future. Keep an eye on the Margam Country Park and NPT Wildlife Facebook pages for details of future events. Alison Lloyd, Duty Officer Margam Country Park www.margamcountrypark.co.uk Seaside News | 34

Carrion Crow - A territorial species meaning gardens are most likely to be visited by a local pair and their young. Chaffinch - Lower than average numbers visited gardens last autumn, probably due to a poor breeding season and a bumper seed crop outside of gardens. Greenfinch - Since the 2006 outbreak of the disease Trichomonosis, weekly counts no longer show much seasonal variation. Pied Wagtail - Usually only seen in 10% of gardens. Starling - More birds visit gardens in May and June when adults are feeding young. Swallow - This summer visitor peaks in gardens in August before migrating back to Africa. Wren - One of our most widespread birds, numbers took a knock during the long 2012/13 winter. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales.

Making a Will is something we all know we should do but how many of us actually get round to doing it? You may be surprised to hear that well over 50% of the UK adult population have not made a Will. In this modern age where many individuals have children from previous marriages/ relationships this statistic seems even more astonishing. What many people without Wills don’t realise is that when they die their assets will not necessarily pass to those who they would wish to benefit. The current rules which apply when a person dies without a Will (commonly known as the “Laws of Intestacy”) are changing as of the 1st October 2014. One of the most significant changes introduced by the new rules is that if a person dies without leaving a Will and is married but has no children, the whole estate will pass now to their surviving spouse or civil partner. Under the current rules it is only the first £450,000 which would pass to the surviving spouse or civil partner, with the remaining assets being split between parents and if there are no surviving parents then between the deceased’s siblings. Under the new rules if an individual dies without a Will and is married and also has children, the surviving spouse or civil partner will inherit the first £250,000 and then half of the remainder of the estate, with the remaining half being shared equally between the deceased’s children. Under the current rules the surviving spouse or civil partner would receive the first £250,000 but half of the remaining assets are held on behalf of the surviving spouse or civil partner in a life interest trust. The remaining half would pass to the deceased’s children. Unmarried couples are still not protected under the new rules. If a person dies without making a Will and is unmarried their partner will not inherit from their estate. To avoid the potential problems caused by the Laws of Intestacy you should make a Will as soon as possible. Douglas-Jones Mercer solicitors have been providing legal advice to clients in the South West Wales area for over 60 years and their Estates and Trusts Department will provide you with clear and practical advice when drafting your Will. We have offices in Porthcawl, Swansea, Mumbles and Cardiff and are happy to meet clients at their homes should the need arise. For a free 30 minute consultation please contact their Estates & Trusts department on 01792 650000.

Health Meditation Can Help

Beware ‘Healthy’ Sports Drinks

Whether you practice meditation or not, I am sure that you have experienced the onset of one of the meditative hindrances. We name this experience a‘hindrance’ because our perceived clarity is altered. For example-: Sleepiness: Those moments when you feel bodily tired Restlessness: Excitation in the chest area and racing thoughts Doubt: Linked to restlessness – continued appraisal and requestioning in your mind Ill will: Thoughts of subtle anger and rumination with regard to a current unfolding life problem or dilemma Desire for sensual pleasure: Everyday we are bombarded through the sense doors constantly shifting within this seeking pleasure and avoiding pain continuum. This is our life cycle and it’s stressful. There is a societal response to this process. We all know that response ‘Wine o’clock’. These hindrances feed one another and circle – more worry creates more doubt, creates more ill will, creates more‘get me out of here’ bigger and bigger. The next day we have the hang over period lasting 24 hours plus: If you categorize the hangover experience into the aspect of the meditative hindrances you will see an obvious pattern emerge: Sleepiness – More sleep the day after, recovery. Restlessness and anxiety – That heart fluttering experience – inability to concentrate on tasks, can’t finish a job, scattered mind. Argumentative, lack of presence, poor inner resilience Doubt – Did I really write that on facebook? Remorse and regret. Desire – I need to feel better and quick. Pills, potions, food. Neville Evans

The beverage industry tries to convince the public that sports drinks are healthy, but they are often loaded with sugar; in one drink, there were 18 teaspoons of sugar in the container. Other drinks are fortified with vitamins, but these often go unused by the body, because they are often synthetic derivatives that aren’t readily broken down, absorbed and utilised by the body. Vitamin and herb content of some of these energy drinks fool some people into thinking that they are getting a fair share of nutrition for the day, when in reality, they are being inundated with nothing but loads of refined sugar that acidify the cells. The researchers concluded that common sports drinks on the market are also contributing to diabetes and obesity in youth, because they contain so much added sugar. Energy drinks provide short-term energy with heightened caffeine levels, but that energy is quickly lost, addicting youths to want more of the beverages which give nothing but headaches and heart arrhythmia. A true energy drink is simply fresh fruit and vegetable juice, which neutralises excess hydrogen in the cells as it enters the body. The OH- molecules from the juice combine with excess hydrogen in the acidic environment to form water (H2O); thus flushing the cells, reducing oedema and giving longer-lasting energy. POEMS The Train Journey

Sadie and Maud

Let The Cock Crow Dawn

As the train moves off, With slow moving wheels, Going around the bends, With it making little squeals.

Maud went to college. Sadie stayed home. Sadie scraped life with a fine toothed comb.

The train moves quicker, With a clickety clack, The scenery passing faster, As we go running down the track.

She didn’t leave a tangle in her comb found every strand. Sadie was one of the chicks in all the land.

Black shale crunched under now redundant boots, Decrepit boots of tatty leather and toes of steel, Where liquorice black laces, tied men to their roots.

You can hear the blasts, As the loud horn sounds, Warning the track workers we approach, Who are upon the ground.

Sadie bore two babies Under her maiden name. Maud and Ma and Papa nearly died of shame.

The train starts to go slower, With gasps of frustration, But the people start to smile, Now they are arriving at their destination. David Boyce, Brackla , Bridgend

When Sadie said her last so-long her girls struck out from home. Sadie left as heritage her fine-toothed comb.

The Merchant Seamen

You’ve seen him on the street Rolling ‘round on groggy feet You’ve seen clutch a lamppost for support You’ve seen him arm in arm With some girl of doubtful charm Who was leading Johnnie safely into port. You’ve praised our Royal Navy lads In there stately iron clads You’ve raised a cheer for Tommy Atkins to You’ve trembled in a funk When you’ve heard a steamers sunk But did you ever give a damn about the crew You’ve tut tutted in disgust As he’s grovelled in the dust You’ve revolted when you see him on the spree But have you seen the slip of his dirty little ship Plouging furrows through a mine infested sea When this wicked war is over Don’t forget the Straits of Dover And all the seven seas as well Are alive with men like these Bringing you your bread and cheese You will remember won’t you Will you hell. J.D. This poem was written by an officer in the Royal Navy in 1944, dedicated to the unsung heroes of both wars. Sent in by John & Sylvia Davies, Porthcawl Seaside News | 40

Let the cock crow dawn by the old pit mouth, Where crouched and folded men toil, And the horseman’s compass spun from north to south. Lucifer lost, had burst the banks, the banks of trust, The trust of crouched and folded men, And round and round their broken trust was thrust. Soil and muck churned those Harlech men, Over and over with mouths gasping for fresh breath, But no hallelujahs were spewed that day, amen.

Maud, who went to college, Is a thin brown mouse. She is living all alone in this old house. Simon Dang, North Cornelly

Bursting lungs, like black kettles whistling steam, As marble arms and spent fingers of granite, grasped life, And eleven black swans huddle in a circle of silent white esteem

To submit your Poem Email: info@seasidenews.co.uk

Those washed and tired eyes ceased to search that cobalt night As a milk moist mist drifted down the valley shelf Our past grips grief tight, within that fight of the dying of such light.

Think Very Carefully Think very carefully girls, Before you say “I do” For “do you take this man” Will always mean, you take his laundry too! As you’re walking down the aisle In you stunning wedding frocks, Your vows forget to mention Beer-breath and smelly socks! For better or for worse you’ll say But you just don’t think it through For “betters” a good rugby match And “worse” includes man flu! Once you’ve made these vows my dears Time proves them very true I do the washing, I do the ironing, I do the cleaning too, I do the cooking, I do the shopping, I DO I DO I DO Chris Early, Cefn Cribwr

That September wind, brass cold, licked the eyes of the fighting crows, Begin the day backwards and hear the cock crow, Let black shale crunch once more, under tatty leather and steely toes. Dennis, Margam.

BOOK OF THE MONTH Sarah Waters: The Paying Guests This bestselling author, who wrote three astonishing Victorian novels before moving to the 1940s now turns to the 1920s. It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned, the out-ofwork and the hungry are demanding change. And in the south of the city, in a hushed Camberwell villa life is about to be transformed. Widowed Mrs Wray and her daughter Frances find themselves obliged to take in lodgers. The arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the ‘clerk class’, brings unsettling things with it: gramophone music, colour, fun. Open doors offer Frances glimpses of the newcomers’ habits, sounds travel from their rooms to hers, and the staircase and landing have never seemed to her so busy. A love story that is also a crime story, this is vintage Sarah Waters: nail-biting tension, real tenderness, believable characters, and surprises.

All these books and many more are available from Bridgend libraries. So whatever new skills you are taking up or older skills you are updating this autumn, we have books to support your learning and you never know where it might take you. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge was a huge success with about 200 children finishing the challenge. Over the next few weeks I will be visiting the local schools to hand out certificates and congratulate the children. We have also started a junior reading club for 8-12 year olds who will next meet on 10th October at 5pm to discuss The Worry Website by Jacqueline Wilson. If you wish to join one of our reading groups (junior, teen and adult) just pop along beforehand to get you copy of the relevant book. Arts Bridgend Male Choir News

Porthcawl Male Choir

Bridgend Male Choir will showcase its current music content at its annual concert from 7pm on Friday 10th October at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Bridgend. Guest soloist is Jessica Robinson, soprano, and 2014 winner of the Russell Sheppard Scholarship. At its “annual”, the choir likes to showcase its music team talent and the concert will feature a vocal duet by its Musical Director and Accompanist, Rhiannon Williams-Hale and Stephanie Bailey, and an instrumental solo by its organist Scott Williams. It’s the choir’s first performance in its hometown since being awarded the coveted Male Choir title at Llangollen’s International Music Eisteddfod. Tickets are £5 from Porters Estate Agents, Nolton Street; News Shop, Dunraven Place; or Secretary Gareth Reese on 07773 170373. Seventy years ago the 53rd Welsh Division relieved the Dutch city of s’Hertogenbosch from Nazi occupation at a cost of 154 lives and many more casualties. The local population has never forgotten this bravery and each year invites a Welsh choir to join it in commemoration. Visits are coordinated by Porthcawl resident and BMC Vice President Vince Scanlon and choristers are honoured to be returning for this significant 70th. The choir tour party leaves on the 25th October for a full programme of events. David T Burt, Media Officer

Rehearsals are currently dominated by the choir’s determination to ensure that this year’s annual concert will maintain the high standard of previous years. It will take place on Saturday 4th October commencing at 7pm in the Grand Pavilion. Tickets, priced £15, are on sale at the box office. Each year the choir attempts to bring to the town as our guest a well known singer who is often, but not always, Welsh. Last year our guest was the West End star of Les Miserables, John Owen-Jones, a singer with an established reputation and is a native of Burry Port. This year the choir is proud to have appearing with us the young, Rhondda-born singer Sophie Evans who is also a West End star and who rose to fame in the BBC TV reality series in which rising young singers competed for the starring role as Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Over The Rainbow’. In the competition Sophie was the runner-up but nevertheless was given the part initially for one day a week and eventually for all performances. Since then she has not looked back, performing for audiences throughout the country. John Williams PRO

A Film Maker’s Point of View I’ve always been interested in the past, which explains why I have produced a series of local history films about the towns in this area. I also have a lifelong interest in lorries – particularly the Atkinson from days gone by – and I have decided to make a short film about it, with help from fellow members of the Classic Atkinson and Seddon Atkinson Club, known as CASSAC. Its chairman, Tony Henwood, has kindly allowed me to use the picture of his own restored vehicle, which once belonged to John Raymond Transport in Bridgend, to remind readers what it looks like. Several big South Wales road haulage contractors operated the Atkinson from the 1960s to the 1980s and it was a familiar sight on our roads, but now they have all disappeared, apart from those in preservation. Do you have recollections of driving this vehicle, or know where any of them are still lying around in an abandoned state? The shooting of the film will take me around the country – Tony’s example is now based in Suffolk – but it would be nice to trace something of the Atkinson in this part of the world. If you have any information which could be of interest, please contact me on 01656 771775. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Picture: Tony Henwood’s Atkinson

Art In Focus Sir William Goscombe John (1860-1952) was a leader of the British ‘New Sculpture’ movement. The New Sculpture movement aimed to make sculpture more dynamic through the naturalistic representation of the human body. At the age of 14, Goscombe John was working on the rebuilding of Cardiff Castle, carving architectural ornament. In 1881 he went to London where he was taught naturalistic modelling in clay. He was an outstanding student, and later spent a year in Paris, where he watched the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin at work. His works are beautifully rendered human forms and are incredibly realistic. His St John the Baptist shows the saint looking ragged and tired rather than saintly and perfect. Although based in London, work in Wales underpinned his career. You can see many of his public sculptures in Cardiff. He designed the medals still awarded by the National Eisteddfod today. He was also a great supporter of the National Museum, giving many pieces of his own work, and influencing the formation of its art collection. Learn more about this fascinating sculptor by attending one of the new Collecting Treasures Art Tours at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. Josephine Lewington MA

Arts Stag’s World of Rock

Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society

First off, congratulations to Steve Maitland Thomas and team for a fantastic festival on Newton Green in August. I couldn’t feature it in last month’s column because of the printing schedule. I managed to catch “Johnny Trashed”, “Half N Half”, “The Guzzards” and “Last Chance Heroes” who were all on top form and I’m already looking forward to next year! It’s good to see The Wicked Lady (formerly P.S.) in Bridgend back open and having live music on weekends. My old mate Derek Smith of the band “Mabon” fame holds an open mic evening there on a Wednesday so pop along and give a song. Whilst in Bridgend, “The Blims” are still going strong – Mark and the boys have a new single and video out (check website). Two years ago they had a number one on the iTunes chart with “Sidesteps and Sideburns”, with over 170,000 hits. Their Celtic folk rock style would be a big asset to next year’s Newton Festival! Top metal band “DragonForce” plays Hobos in Bridgend on 3rd October. Next month I’ll keep you up to speed with the Planet Rock Festival taking place at Trecco Bay in December. Former “Deep Purple” bassist Glen Hughes has been added! Important notice – I have a new phone number so keep your news and texts coming. Please disregard my old number. Stag Marks New mobile number: 07549 728356 Photo: The Blims

Our new season started well, with several new and returning members joining the existing club membership. Our very first presenter, Tim Knifton was a big hit with his presentation entitled Urban Exploration, which included many excellent HDR (High Dynamic Range) images taken in derelict buildings and showing decay. We’ve also had some competitions, which included a few surprises. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Cor Bro Ogwr - New Conductor This month Cor Bro Ogwr bid farewell to its conductor of the past five years, Edward-Rhys Harry. As the choir’s Chairperson, John Trotter, remarked - “we have travelled the world with Edward; Russia, America, London and ...Reading!” And the choir also travelled along another journey with Edward, having had the privilege of performing some of Edward’s own new choral compositions. The choir gave a warm welcome to its new Musical Director, Nick Bromilow, a graduate from Southampton University now living in Bristol, where he conducts both the Redland Green Community Chorus and the Highbridge and Burnham Choral Society. Nick plays the French horn, piano and also sings tenor. Rehearsals have already started for the choir’s Christmas concert in All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl, on Dec.13th, with Nick devoting his energy and enthusiasm for pieces from John Rutter, Edward-Rhys Harry, Handel’s Messiah and some old seasonal favourites. Cor Bro Ogwr is looking forward to the challenges being set by its new young conductor! Dominique Spearey Photo: left to tight Chairperson John Trotter, Nick Bromilow Seaside News | 46

Sport Porthcawl RFC Looks Fresh For New Season Thanks To Ospreys Players

A team of Ospreys players descended on Porthcawl RFC over the summer to give the clubhouse a fresh lick of paint ahead of the new season. Throughout the summer, the Ospreys have been getting their hands dirty after volunteering to help local rugby clubs with any odd jobs. The offer has seen players helping out at several clubs - most recently Porthcawl RFC where they painted the pitch side railings and panels on the side of the clubhouse, following a recent grant of £500 towards the upkeep of the club. Scott Baldwin, Andrew Bishop, Rhys Webb and Lloyd Evans were all present on the day and joined in with the painting, giving the club a new lease of life in time for the new season to start.

Porthcawl Lifeguard News The club is currently looking to secure funding for a solar panel project which will reduce the carbon footprint of the club building, save over 100 tonnes of co2 and secure the future of the club for the next generation. The funding will be used for a solar array, giving the club a regular income stream to maintain the building, purchase new equipment and continue to offer new opportunities for children and adults to develop their lifesaving skills. This is an opportunity for the club to secure its future, whilst helping the environment and leaving a positive legacy for future generations all powered by the Welsh sun. With the help of local environmentally aware businesses and our friends in the local community we can make this happen. For more information and to donate towards this exciting new community energy initiative please log on to our fundraising website at: https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/fpR7d Andrew Barnes Porthcawl Lifeguard Club

SENIORS Tracey Williams, Assistant Secretary of Porthcawl RFC, said: “We were thrilled when we heard the Ospreys were willing to help us with our painting. It’s great to see the players getting involved with the community at a grassroots level, which provides a great example for our younger players. Osprey player Ryan Bevington started his career at Porthcawl RFC. He continues to be a great support and coaches our minis, juniors and seniors. As you can imagine, players and members of all ages are extremely proud of his achievements and are truly grateful for his continued support of his home club, including his father who is also Chairman of Porthcawl RFC.” Andrew Hore, CEO of Ospreys Rugby, said: “It’s important to us to show that we are a community-minded organisation and to reiterate how important our supporters are to us. Our players enjoy getting out and about in the community as it provides a great opportunity for them to engage with supporters. Ahead of the new season, we are delighted with the feedback we have received following our odd-job drive and look forward to seeing members of the local clubs at our upcoming matches.” Supplied by the Ospreys Seaside News | 54
