october’s little bit of local history Dear Editor, Good afternoon dear editor and dear readers of this good magazine. I would like to refrain from responding to Mr Lloyd Evans’ letter in the August issue as I am not of a warring nature. I would like instead to tell of a local story that my grandfather told me when I was a young man. During the early part of the nineteenth century there was a dry stone wall encircling Porthcawl, the locals called it the barrier, as it was famed to keep away evil spirits. On one late October evening a local boy called Bryn from

Nottage went walking the wall to take some pies to his elderly grandparents, the wall being the quickest and safest route. Within minutes a violent storm brewed and the boy was swept into the air, being carried some 5 miles or so inland. Here he lay for the night, the pies splattered all over the floor. In the morning the boy was found by a young lady by the name of Mary. She was on her way to the town of Porthcawl from her farm home to deliver milk to the shop in Nottage. Her parents took the boy in and nursed him to health, they also made good the broken pies and delivered them to his elderly grandparents. Bryn and Mary struck up a grand friendship and later ended up getting married and

building a successful pie business there. The area became known as Pie Hill, later, to become Pyle. Mary Street was named after her, as she spent her latter years here following Bryn’s death, after he drowned following the sinking of his boat, trying to deliver pies to Lundy Island. Just a bit of local knowledge

for the readers! Any questions about any of the issues or stories raised then I invite any of the readers to come quiz my good self. I like to take my pipe most evenings on the harbour wall and ponder the world’s wonders and I always welcome a good debate. GeRaLd THoMkiNsoN

The Lobbying Bill Dear Editor, The Lobbying Bill represents a real threat both to the quality of debate on public policy in this country and charities’ ability to champion the needs of the poor and vulnerable through campaigns such as Make Poverty History. Ministers’ assurance that they do not intend to curb charities’ ability to speak out on legitimate issues of concern is welcome. But by extending election regulations to activi-

ties that are not intended to promote one party or another, the Government would prevent charities and other campaigners from engaging effectively in policy debates for 12 months before a general election. With legal opinion suggesting it will have a “chilling effect” on free speech and the Electoral Commission warning the proposed rules would be unworkable, it is time for the Government to listen and amend the Bill accordingly. JULIAN ROSSER

Head of Oxfam Cymru

Thank you, Seaside News readers

Dear Editor, I am writing to thank Seaside News readers and residents for supporting the Bridgend & Porthcawl Fundraising Group for Marie Curie Cancer Care. In its second year, the group has raised over £7,000 and every penny will help support local Marie Curie nurses, who provide free care to people with terminal illnesses. The group has been involved in a wide range of fundraising activities and collections within the local community in the past year, including Brackla Funday and the Blooming Great Tea Party at Porthcawl where they entertained First Minister Carwyn Jones and Porthcawl mayor Michael

No Porthcawl railway station? Dear Editor, Firstly, the railway station was axed by Beeching – I rode on one the last trains out to see Twelfth Night in Stratford I think it was in the early 60s. Secondly It takes a lot of guts to admit in public that you have a problem. It must be great to be as perfect as you - these people who you despise are fighting to have a life again, but with people prejudging them and making blanket statements without knowing all the facts; how can they succeed MRS E MAHONEY

Clarke who was accompanied by his wife Norah. The Bridgend & Porthcawl Fundraising Group would not have been able to raise these vital funds without the tremendous support of local people. Autumn activities include a pub Quiz at the Jolly Sailor, Newton, Porthcawl on Sunday 13th October. It is £1 entry per person. There are prizes for the winning teams and there will be a raffle. Turn up early for a seat. Quiz starts at 8.45pm. Friday 1st November there is a Neil Diamond tribute night & disco at Bridgend Rugby Club. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Tickets in advance £10, or £15 on the night available from Sue on 0786 1698918. This will be a brilliant evening for all Neil Diamond lovers so please buy your tickets early. HELEN THOMAS

Dear Editor, Jared Evans is correct when he says there has never been a swimming pool in Porthcawl, but completely wrong about a railway station, as people from the valleys will testify. My wife and I took the train to Porthcawl from Pyle station,

Lost dog Dear Editor, Last week I tried to find help for a lost dog running in the road in Porthcawl. No-one at the police station, and amazingly no help from PAWS shop in the way of a contact for the charity. The lady in the shop did try the dog warden’s number though, which as she predicted

10 | Seaside News

Dear Editor, I am just reading through the September issue of Seaside News and I am rather concerned about a letter RE; Welcome back to Porthcawl It states every moron knows there has never been a railway station on Porthcawl… Is this sarcasm that I am flying over or is the writer trying to be clever without research? I am sure a lot of people will tell you there was a railway station in Porthcawl and I am darn sure you will find a lot of miners in our valleys that will confirm this… It was how they travelled to Porthcawl for what we fondly remember as ‘Miners Fortnight’. Please correct Jarry Lloyd Evans in your next issue and inform him / her that they are in fact the idiot!

Porthcawl and the Great War Dear Editor, Well, well, well... the silly correspondence season is alive and - well! I hear rumours of a dastardly plot being fomented by a young man, Gavril Princip. He intends, believe it or not, to assassinate the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This will bring great troubles to Europe, even to the wider world. But in any case Porthcawl Museum will be on hand. In April 2014 we open our new exhibition, called ‘Porthcawl and the Great War’,

which documents the part played by our town during the years of that conflict, and for some years after, also. There is still time to add your family’s story to the material already collected, so, please look in your attic for anything relating to the 1914-1918 War, and donate or loan it. We want this exhibition to reflect well on this town’s part in the troubles caused by young Gavril. Finally, not a word about this to Kaiser Bill! BRiaN LoWMaN

The Eco committee in the Willow Wigwam celebrates being awarded the 4th green flag

It was great to return to school after the six week break to find everyone keen and eager to get back to work. Everyone has settled back in very quickly ready for another successful year at Nottage, Nottage Primary School has been awarded a fourth Green Flag Award to celebrate their commitment to eco work. After previously achieving bronze,

simply outstanding This sums up the achievements of Porthcawl Comprehensive’s students in their GCSE and A-Level examination results. At GCSE remarkable individual performances and an all round good effort resulted in continued improvement compared with last year’s results. Those students of A Level were not to be outshone and did exceptionally well. Almost one in every three papers sat resulted in the A* or A grade. This is remarkable given the very large examination entry of 367 papers sat. Any comparison, however made, shows our school has performed exceptionally well.

silver and gold eco-schools status, we have now achieved a platinum award. Matthew Bunt, the Eco-schools assessor, was most impressed by the members of the Eco committee for our continued enthusiasm in promoting sustainable development issues. He said it was very clear that it was a whole school initiative supported by the whole school community. Our school is proud to be called a Platinum Eco School. We also came back to school with news that we have achieved the BIKE IT SCHOOL bronze award. Special thanks to Miss Lawrence for leading this important area so well. sue o’HaLLoRaN

Children & young people column With the nights drawing in and autumn leaves starting to fall, the school term is well underway in Bridgend County Borough. Being back in school is always exciting for young people as they catch up with friends and start to learn about new topics, but pupils who have been settling into some of the area’s latest school buildings have had an especially exciting start to the term. Following quickly in the footsteps of Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School in Brackla, our ongoing school modernisation programme has delivered another new comprehensive with the opening of the £34m Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen at Tondu. A £1m new Early Years unit has opened at Bryncethin

Primary, Oldcastle Primary has revealed its new Nurture / Family Space and pupils at Penyfai Church in Wales Primary are about to move into their £4.3m all-new school building. Delivered in partnership with the Welsh Government, the school modernisation programme reinforces our commitment towards providing children and young people throughout the area with access to first-rate educational facilities and opportunities. With future developments set to include new premises for Coity Primary, the school modernisation programme is continuing to deliver benefits for youngsters across Bridgend County Borough. This summer, Cynffig has been celebrating some of our best results ever. Our Level 2 results (the equivalent of 5 A*-C grades) were the highest we have ever achieved, every A-level student passed every examination they sat, and we celebrated seeing all our Year 13 students succeed in taking up their chosen university places. Our celebration of students’ success at a packed Presentation Evening on 12th September was an inspirational start to the term, and a reminder of how much Cynffig means to so many. Also this term, we have welcomed our new Year 7

Another school year has now commenced, how wonderful it was to see all the children back looking so smart in their uniforms, and we extend a very warm welcome to all our new pupils. We welcome our new ‘Criw Cymraeg’ - Nia Matthews, Rhys Rawnson, Shayleigh Limb and Lewis Evans, all from Class 4. They are playing Welsh games in the yard and running our Urdd Club for Year 2s. students with the Cynffig Challenge. A day of activities in which students are able to further develop their sense of belonging at Cynffig is central to Cynffig’s belief that the emotional wellbeing of every student is as important in their learning as excellent teaching. This is on-going, of course: as I write this we are looking forward to our annual Open Evening on 1st October. We will once again open our doors to the next Cynffig generation, and showcase all the reasons why our school is at the heart of our community: because our true partnership of teachers, students and parents is simply unique. in defence of Porthcawl Fire station Last month I attended a rally outside the fire station in Porthcawl attended by several hundred residents who are concerned that plans by the Fire and Rescue Authority to move the facility to Cornelly, will compromise their safety. This is not just a simple relocation as the number of appliances in the new station will be half those currently available. The computer modelling on which the plan for Porthcawl is based uses figures of 7,000 residences and 16,000 people. These figures account for permanent residents as they are at present. However, they do not take any account of the numbers of holidaymakers who

Premium 0844 numbers leave patients with hefty bills

Research by Plaid Cymru has discovered that an increasing number of GP surgeries in the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board are using premium 0844 numbers which can leave patients with hefty bills. Of the 29 surgeries in Wales that list this number, which charges 5.1p per min plus a 15p connection charge from a BT landline but up to 44p a minute from a mobile phone,

visit Porthcawl, nor do they take account of housing and other developments proposed for the area. Trecco Bay has 1,800 static homes, and can have up to 10,000 people on site during the holiday season. In addition, planning permission has been granted for 1,300 new homes on Salt Lake and Sandy Bay South Wales Fire Rescue Service says that the new station will be able to provide an average response time of seven minutes to an emergency in Porthcawl. I find this difficult to accept, given that this is a retained fire station. That is why I am opposing this closure. PeTeR BLaCk aM Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net

seven are based in Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot. Given that there are 48 surgeries in this area that means almost one in eight now use the premium numbers. What bothers me most about these figures is that they appear to be most prevalent in areas where patients can least afford the bills that they bring. I think it also flies in the face of a service that is supposed to care for the people it treats, and a service that is free at the point of use. I would ask ABMU if it is aware of this growing practice, and if it knows where the money goes to? And – most importantly – what it can do to bring it to an end, particularly in areas of deprivation. Citizens advice Bureau For many years the Citizens Advice Bureau has formed a vital cornerstone of the high street and the community. Despite major funding cuts, volunteers have provided an essential service to the people hit hardest by austerity cuts and complex tax, legal and housing issues. The organisation has now branched out to provide data on local users so that we can understand what the greatest needs are in our area and how these trends develop over time. The newly released figures show that 3,744 people visited Bridgend CAB last year, to discuss 11,126 separate problems, a slight increase on last year. In Wales as a whole, new visitors in the last quarter of 2012

Porthcawl regeneration As shadow Welsh Regeneration Minister I welcome news that Porthcawl regeneration may at last be going ahead. My only concern is for Porthcawl to end up with a quality development that will enhance the town. While a new supermarket is unlikely to set anybody’s pulses racing, it is crucial that the town gets the maximum benefit from the scheme. We must be conscious of the possibly disastrous consequences for the small shops of having a big supermarket on their doorstep – which is why the role of the planners will be fundamental. Key to success in regenerating the town centre will be the parking arrangements. The new supermarket car park must also serve the town centre – like the Asda car park in Bridgend.

were 27% higher than one year before. The most common Bridgend issues, 40% of cases, are related to benefits, and this is rapidly increasing. ESA and Housing Benefit claims bring the most visitors. Debt problems remain the second-most common topic, particularly unsecured personal loans. Issues with housing and unemployment also comprise a number of cases. What the figures show is not only the areas of key concern for Bridgend residents which Government must address, but also the invaluable work of CAB in providing for so many a guide and advocate through welfare cuts. MadeLeiNe MooN MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com

01656 750002

There must be a free three hour period to enable people to patronise the shops and cafes in town as well. Having supermarkets in town centres can be an advantage to established retailers if they are carefully controlled. There must good links between the new store and the town centre which must also be well signposted. Otherwise, people will drive to the supermarket, do all their shopping and then go home. And that would be a disaster. BYRoN davies

Leader’s life Every year, the Welsh Government releases performance figures for local authorities in Wales. I was delighted to see that Bridgend County Borough is once more among the best areas for recycling and diverting waste away from landfill. By recycling 57 per cent of all waste, we have again exceeded the statutory target of 52 per cent to become one of the country’s top two recycling authorities. Bridgend Fairtrade Partnership is looking for New Members

After celebrating Bridgend’s third year as a certified Fairtrade County this July, the Bridgend Fairtrade Partnership is looking to add to their current team of ‘Fairtrade fanatics’, as it looks to cement the county’s status, into next year and beyond. Five years on since Wales became the world’s first Fairtrade country, the focus remains on finding new, creative ways to bring Fairtrade to new audiences. The group is looking for

people and groups from any backgrounds – the only condition being they must have a passion for Fairtrade and social justice. The group meets every 1-2 months to discuss how we can encourage even greater awareness and support of the Fairtrade brand. By supporting Fairtrade, you are encouraging a more equal approach to trade that aims to empower marginalised, developing-world producers to grow their own business. It supports the development of sustainable practices and decent working conditions – without sacrificing quality and consumer satisfaction. If you are interested in joining the partnership, or require additional information, you can email us at sussedwales@gmail. com or phone 01656783962. Have you heard of the Wales Cancer Bank?

The Wales Cancer Bank (WCB) is a pioneering project to build a bank of biological samples that can be used by cancer researchers worldwide. Cancer patients around Wales are asked to donate tissue that would otherwise be discarded; their generosity allows WCB to store the samples for use in research projects. Cancers are complex diseases – statistics suggest that four out of ten people will be affected. It is an ongoing quest to understand how cancers develop and can be treated.

The availability of samples from human tumours is vital for research; after all, it is human cancer that we are trying to figure out. Since its launch in 2004, over 9,000 patients have donated samples. Research groups from around the world have used the samples in their work. Research carried out today will determine how patients are treated in years to come. Short term, genetic investigation of tumour samples could identify a clinical trial available which the patient could benefit from. WCB are holding a public event in June 2014 to celebrate its 10th anniversary and achievements so far. Would you like to find out more? a spectacular comet – perhaps The ‘Sun-grazing’ Comet ISON (C/2012 S1), now approaching the planet Mars, will make a close encounter with the Sun in November, and may well become one of the most spectacular comets in many years. When the Swift spacecraft observed it in January, when it was still near the orbit of Jupiter, it was already very active – it was expelling dust from the nucleus at a rate estimated at nearly a tonne a second. Computer models suggest that for several days around 12th January 2014 the Earth

will pass through a stream of fine-grained debris from Comet ISON at a relative speed of 56 km/s. Because the particles are so small, the Earth’s upper atmosphere will slow them to a stop. Instead of burning up in a flash of light, they will drift gently down to the surface, probably taking months or even years to settle out. While the dust is in the upper atmosphere, it may help to produce noctilucent clouds (NLCs), which are bluish icy clouds, possibly seeded by space dust, that form very high up (more than 80 km) in the polar regions in summer time. On Saturday, the 13th August 1831 at 8 am, Richard Lewis, better known as Dic Penderyn, was hanged in St Mary’s Street, Cardiff, outside the gaol. He was 23 years old. On the 2nd June 1831, Dic Penderyn had taken part in the Merthyr Uprising, a protest against rising unemployment and the lowering of wages. During the Uprising, a number of protesters were killed and wounded as troops opened fire. Several soldiers were also injured in the disturbance including Private Donald Black of the 93rd

Highland Regiment. After the Uprising, Dic Penderyn was arrested and charged with ‘maliciously stabbing with intent to murder’ Private Donald Black. At the Cardiff Assizes, Donald Black, who had noticed Dic in the crowd, could not identify him as his assailant. Nevertheless, Dic was found guilty of the charge. Forty-three years later, in America, Ianto Parker made a deathbed confession to the Rev. Evan Evans admitting that he had wounded Private Black and that he had fled to America as a result. Furthermore, a witness, James Abbot, later admitted that he had lied under oath. A petition signed by 11,000 people was drawn up in support of Dic Penderyn. However, the Home Secretary, Lord Melbourne, wanted a scapegoat and he condemned Dic to hang. MaNseL JoNes

Tools for africa

As one of 65 TFSR groups in the UK… WE CELEBRATE FIVE YEARS OF OPERATION. Can we thank individuals and many organisations from Porthcawl and surrounding area who have given us tremendous support and encouragement, some in the donating of tools, and in donations to help shipment and training. During this time we have sent 84 crates covering some 16 different trades, each crate containing a single kit of beau-

tifully refurbished tools. This is approximately 6,000 tools. Each kit contains between 28 to 108 tools depending on the trade. We have sent 163 sewing machines and 102 sets of haberdashery. We are often asked about integrity snd security. Our kits have gone to our partner organisations in seven countries. All crates arrived at destination. Through our established partnerships the local village or church will sponsor the trainees, contribute to the training and support them as they develop their livelihoods. The trainees have had to pay a token amount for the quality tools they receive so there is a sense of ownership. This is ploughed back into training programmes. Workshops are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, volunteers are always welcome. For information contact John at 786367 or please view the charity website www.tfsr.org JoHN HaNsoN

Through Christian eyes Volunteers spruce up Porthcawl’s beaches Some of Porthcawl’s most popular beaches have had their beauty restored after a joint beach cleaning effort from Bridgend County Borough Council, local businesses and residents. Co-ordinated by the council’s Countryside and Tourism team, a group of eco-enthusiasts took to the shores and car parks at Coney Beach, Newton Beach and Trecco Bay armed with litter pickers where they collected discarded rubbish. Joining council workers and local volunteers were members of staff from Keep Wales Tidy, the Hi Tide Inn, Trecco Bay and Porthcawl Lifeguards. Mayor of Bridgend County

Pier Hotel investigation

During the summer the Porthcawl Paranormal Team investigated the Pier Hotel, only this time at night! The normal temperature was 20°C and humidity 71%, with locked off cameras in various locations around the building. We began our investigation in the bar, and immediately sensed the presence of an old lady, possibly the same person who we connected with before. The compass spun rapidly around the pool table and the batteries from our equipment drained of energy, with the humidity dropping dramatically. The dog present with us began to act in a peculiar

Borough, Councillor Clive James, said: “All the people and organisations who donated their time and effort to clear up the beaches deserve credit. They did a fantastic job and made a really significant impact. “However, while it’s great to see the community pulling together in this way, litter picking is a job that shouldn’t need to be done at all. It’s irritating that some people don’t seem to care about the county borough’s beautiful scenery as their selfish actions affect everyone’s ability to enjoy it. Please take your litter home.” To find out more, contact Robert Jones, Countryside Management Officer on 01656 643160 or email robert.jones@ bridgend.gov.uk Luke Fox

On the upper floors the chilling sound of a ticking clock was heard, even though no device of the kind is visible. The EMF reader went off the scale around a doorframe, and photographs revealed a peculiar violet aura around it. Our séance using an upturned glass on the floor executed movement, and an invisible clock seemed to chime in response to our questions, an exciting end to a fascinating experiment. We recited our usual prayer for protection against evil spirits and closed down our investigation, satisfied that we had come into contact with the spirits of yesteryear who seemed willing to communicate with us. Is ‘the Land of Song’ losing its voice? Many schools no longer hold regular assemblies with singing. The singing is often poor at weddings and funerals. Even ‘sing-songs at the pub’ are becoming rare. At international rugby and football matches the singing has declined to mainly simple chanting. Bird Watch: Feral Pigeon Grizzle plumage

Look closely at a flock of Feral Pigeons and you’ll notice a vast array of plumage types. Why is there such a variety? Do birds actively choose mates of a particular colour? Are some colours more vulnerable to predation? The Feral Pigeon Project needs your help to answer these questions and to build up a nationwide map. All you have to do is count the different plumage types you see and where you saw them. The individual health benefits of singing are well known, but our community skill at singing also enhanced our family gatherings, inspired our sporting teams and contributed to our children’s all round development. At one time our churches and chapels were centres of community music and singing, each church had its choirs or singing groups, music was performed ‘live’, and faith inspired wholehearted involvement. Is the decline in Christian faith a contributing cause? The Bible says “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. smoothie Bike back in action cycling for social justice and now for hire Sustainable Wales are shifting the campaign for Fairtrade and social justice up a gear, as the ‘Sustainable Wales Smoothie Bike’ returns for another a lap around Bridgend. The portable, pedal-powered bike with a blender attached to it, is visiting events and organisations in Bridgend (and beyond), bringing refreshing and healthy Fairtrade (FT) smoothies to a plethora of events, whilst simultaneously encouraging kids and adults to have an active lifestyle, whilst supporting marginalised producers in the developing world. The Smoothie Bike is also available to hire for events, although we ask that you try

and use fairly traded ingredients where possible! Hire is free if you’re able to transport the bike yourselves, although any donations to Sustainable Wales are hugely appreciated. Furthermore, Sustainable Wales, alongside the Bridgend FT Partnership, have just released the Fairtrade Directory, detailing which organisations in borough are going ‘Further for Fairtrade’ by giving their customers, employees etc. the option to go choose FT products. Hard-copies of the directory are available all around the borough, or online at http:// www.sustainablewales.org.uk/ fairtrade-directory/ To enquire about the Smoothie Bike or any of our other projects, or to apply to be in the directory, you can email info@sustainablewales.org.uk or phone 01656 783962. Sker The September meeting was held recently. The President Nora Williams welcomed members back after the summer break. The Mystery Trip included a tour of the Welsh Quilt Museum at Lampeter and some retail therapy in Carmarthern. The day finished with a meal at Blanco’s in Port Talbot. A very enjoyable day was had by all. The speaker for the evening was Polly Davies who gave a very informative talk on the Statue of Liberty. This Statue celebrated its centenary in 1986 with a very large party. It was originally made in France and took several years to complete. It was transported in sections and erected on its present site. Originally the Statue could be seen for miles. President Clevedon unveiled the Statue in 1886 which was attended by thousands of people. The original torch has been replaced. Visitors can go right to the top of the Statue which has been made a State Monument. The next meeting will be held on 10th October at 7pm. Anyone wishing to join us is

very welcome.

Mynydd Cynffig The September meeting started off our countdown to Christmas. We had several trips in our summer break which were enjoyed by all. Our Quilt and Craft exhibition raised £200 for our friends at Sandville. We are all looking forward to our autumn outings a fashion show in Mumbles, a musical evening in Archbishop McGrath school, a trip to St Davis’s Hall Cardiff to see Only Men Allowed, and not forgetting our Christmas party. Our guest speaker Marilyn Sydenham was welcomed by our deputy chairwoman Sue Shephard, the talk was on hearing dogs for deaf people, which was interesting and informative. The next meeting will be on 8th October at 2.30pm in Pyle church hall as usual and our guest speaker will be Steven Jarvis. The topic is Toy Story we might all get tips for our grandchildren for Christmas presents. We finished the meeting with tea and biscuits.

Forward guidance The Bank of England governor Mark Carney last month outlined his plans for bolstering Britain’s economy using a strategy known as forward guidance, which basically involves sticking to fiscal policies so that households, businesses and the markets can all feel more confident about what lies ahead. Under forward guidance, Mr Carney has pledged that rates will not change until mid-2016 and can only fall sooner if certain conditions in the economy have been met. Why has he done this?

If businesses or individuals know that there are no surprise interest rate increases ahead, they can feel confident about borrowing or investing more. Under the old system, markets tried to second guess when rates would change and prematurely price an increase to the base rate as soon as the economy showed signs of revival. This resulted in increased borrowing costs, which stifled growth.

The adviser website Unbiased recently conducted research which found that 37% of consumers had no concept of what annuity products are. This is a worrying high percentage given the fact that an annuity is the most common method of drawing an income at retirement. What is more concerning is

As the mortgage market has continued to improve over recent months, so too has the more specialist equity release market, with some outstanding new products offering relief for those over the age of 55 who still have a mortgage, especially if it’s on an interest-only basis. The traditional view of equity release has been of it being a solution of last resort, only applicable if you have nowhere else to go. It is now far more than that, offering an array of flexible options, whilst still looking after the needs of those encountering financial difficulty in later life. Here at Cambria Financial we have taken more enquiries so far in 2013 for possible equity release, than for the whole of 2011 and 2012 combined. There are a number of reasons for this, not least of which is the fact that many high street lenders are trying to retrieve money lent to borrowers on an interest-only basis, many of

be best served by enlisting the help of a professional adviser when it comes to their retirement planning. If you are at retirement, then choosing the right way of securing your pension income in retirement is often one of the most important decisions of your life. We can help you make sense of it all and put appropriate plans in place for you. You can find out more about Bartholomew Hawkins as follows: justask@bhifa.co.uk www.bhifa.co.uk

whom have no way of finding the capital to repay the loan. We are now able to guide such people to specialist lenders who are happy to continue to offer interestonly on an ongoing basis, subject to a minimum age of 55 years as well as you being able to demonstrate that you can afford to make the repayments. The interest rates offered are very much in line with high street lender rates, so affordability is not often an issue – but the solution to the problem can lift the pressure enormously. If you are in need of capital whether it be for paying off a mortgage, continuing an interest-only mortgage or something else like helping the family, carrying out maintenance on the property or home improvements or simply paying off debts, call us for a friendly discussion regarding your needs. Landlords – Beware… As a landlord, do you fully understand your repair obligations? Sara Hawkins, lettings manager with local estate agent Payton Jewell Caines says many landlords risk being sued for injury and or repair, imprisonment and or fines. Section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 is very clear. It places an obligation on the landlord to maintain the structure and exterior of the property, including installations for the supply of water, gas and electricity, heating systems, drainage and sanitary appliances.

ou...

The required repair will vary depending on the age and character of the property or fixture. Landlords or people authorised by them, also have the right to view the condition and state of repair of the property on giving the tenant 24 hours’ notice [in writing and at a reasonable time of day].

Harrison Residential Lettings We are the largest Letting Agency in Porthcawl and pride ourselves on our professional and friendly service. Our managed rate to landlords includes • Finding a suitable tenant • Creating a legally binding Assured Shorthold Tenancy • Preparing a schedule of condition or inventory • Collecting rent • Registering and depositing the Bond • Undertaking periodic inspections during the course of a tenancy • Negotiating resolution of Bond issues

We have no hidden costs Is it time you reviewed your agents (or took less strain personally)? Ring: Harrisons on 01656 772414 or arrange to meet us at 3 Gwendoline Ct, Lias Rd, Porthcawl, or email sian@lettinginporthcawl .co.uk

Unfortunately, as more people invest in rental properties, we see all too often the results of landlord’s not understanding legislation. Indeed, not all landlords understand that these obligations apply to weekly and monthly tenancies as well as fixed term tenancies not exceeding seven years in length. Normally, the landlord will only be liable once he knows of the defect, at least in general terms. This can result either from the landlord being told of the defect by the tenant (written notification is not essential) or because the landlord learns of the defect in some other way. A landlord who is in breach of this obligation is liable to pay the tenant damages and specific orders can be made by the Court requiring the landlord to carry out repairs. In the case of furnished accommodation there is an implied obligation that the premises would be fit for human habitation at the outset of the tenancy.

Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club Autumn is definitely here, a beautiful time of year with trees changing colour (shame their leaves drop all over my lawn!) and still lots to do in the garden. Finish planting spring bulbs (tulips next month) choose plump firm bulbs and plant within a week of purchase, for a natural look throw them into the air and plant where they land! Your soil is your most precious commodity. As you clear crops start digging-in compost, manure and as much organic matter as you can to replace the goodness in it. The earlier you start the better. The winter elements will break-down clods

making spring planting easier. When you have finished harvesting your beans (honest they do come to an end!) leave the roots in the ground as they return valuable nitrogen to the soil perfect for your potatoes next year! Did you know someone standing under an oak tree is 16 times more likely to be hit by lightening than under a beech tree – because the oak has vertical roots – a direct route to ground water! – avoid oak trees in the rain! Tuesday 29th November (7.30pm) is our Halloween party in the Green Hall with pumpkin carving competition (scary!). CHRis eaRLY earlycefn@btinternet.com

THE PRIORY RESTAURANT AND WOODMAN PRODUCTS AT LAKESIDE GOLF COURSE, WATER STREET, MARGAM

Build your customer base through an online shop

If your company sells products and you have a company website, have you considered selling your products through your website? Shown below are three reasons why having an online shop is a great idea: 1. A growing number of people now browse items online before visiting a ‘bricks and mortar’ shop, so being able to browse AND purchase

16–18 Mary Street Porthcawl CF36 3YA

online makes it easier for your customers. 2. There are no closing hours. Customers can access your products at a time that is convenient to them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 3. It can increase your customer base. Your physical shop may be located outside of the town centre which may make it more difficult for some potential customers to visit. Having an online shop helps you reach those new customers. An online shop (also known as an eCommerce system) can be integrated into your company website and can be easily managed by you through a CMS (content management system). You can add new products, update stock levels, reduce the price of old products, offer discounts for special occasions just like you can in an actual shop. Easily managed alongside your existing shop, an online shop allows you to continually build your customer base. Give Lee or Steve a call to find out more: 01656 773388

Csa update Recently I wrote about changes to the CSA system. These changes have now been implemented and so the following is an update which may be of help to you. As of the 29th July 2013, the new gross income scheme will apply to families with two or more qualifying children. All other cases will be dealt with in the old way, with the nonresident parent’s net income being taken into account. The new basic rate calculation stipulates that for people who earn up to £800.00 per week gross, child support is payable at the rate of 12% for one child, 16% for two children and 19% for three or more children. A deduction will be made for other children living in the nonresident parent’s household and there will be a further reduction for parents who share care. If a child splits his time between parents, then no maintenance will be payable. If you are unhappy with the

maintenance you receive, you can apply for an upward variation if the other party has unearned income of at least £2,500.00 from property, investments, savings or other sources. You can apply to vary if you suspect that your former partner is diverting income, that is paying it to someone else. Also, you can ask for a review of a maintenance calculation on the basis that the other party has misrepresented their income to HMRC. Currently, there are no charges for using the system, but this may change as the system becomes fully operational. Future charges are likely to include a £20.00 application fee, a 20% collection charge payable by the non-resident parent and a 4% charge which will be deducted from the maintenance received by the parent with care. If you wish to discuss these issues further, please contact us. MadeLiNe RaNd

Healthy children’s drinks? Parents should shun supposedly healthy fruit drinks and give their children water instead, health experts have urged. They warned that many apparently healthy drinks are loaded with sugar, with some almost as sweet as Coca-Cola. Clever marketing strategies mean they are presented as ‘fun and fashionable’ meaning children – and parents – find them hard to resist. Examples include Robinson’s Fruit Shoot My-5, which is sold as ‘real juice with a splash of water’ and ‘one of your five a day’. A 200ml bottle contains more than 16g, or around four teaspoons of sugar per 100ml,

The Well : one year on It’s been a busy first year at The Well Counselling Centre. The first family run therapy centre in Bridgend has firmly established itself in the heart of Bridgend at Avon Court on Cowbridge Road. Founder Eryl Hulatt established The Well following 14 years in independent practice. Her aim was to create a therapeutic haven for the people of Bridgend whilst also providing more opportunities for the counsellors of South Wales. “It’s been a busy and challenging year but we feel we are building a community for therapists along with meeting the needs of the people of Bridgend.”

this is almost as much as Coke. The health and food campaign group Sustain says that while masquerading as healthy, fruit drinks are contributing to obesity, rotten teeth, diabetes and other health problems that cost the NHS billions a year. Experts said water is the best option. Annie Anderson, professor of public health nutrition at Dundee University, said: “We need to promote water drinking… it’s cool, refreshing, thirst-quenching and healthy.” Sustain is heading a coalition of 67 health charities, medical royal colleges and public health bodies that are calling for a sugary drink tax. suPPLied BY GLYN HaRdWiCke www.buysafer.

isis opening event: ‘Happiness and Wellbeing day’

Isis is a new Porthcawl based group who formed out of a common interest in providing positive life enhancing experiences for families in the local area. At present the group consists of Cate Warlow, Katheryn Jones and Siobhan Grice. The first event this 28th July proved to be a great success with stalls and workshop running throughout the day from 10 until 4pm. Freshstart began with a warm up to dance yourself awake followed by the local community drumming group WOMP. Yoga, Tai Chi, meditation, singing bowls, art, complimentary therapies, health and well being products were also present.

Race the Pace summer stroll During the wonderful summer months members of ‘Slimming World’ groups in Porthcawl joined forces to undertake a sponsored walk for Cancer Research. The walk took us along Eastern Prom, up the sea front to Rest Bay and back with a stop at the Atlantic for light refreshments. This is part of our efforts to raise funds for this worthwhile charity and enables our members to interact with each other, to exchange hits tips and ideas, as well as being part of our ‘Body Majic’

The community choir Laura Bradshaw leads in Cardiff, Barry and Betws entertained the public with a range of songs from around the world. The Fairtrade cafe provided beverages, delicious homemade cake and snacks. Children made their own flags illustrating what made them happy. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and most people found something there to put a smile back on their faces. As there was no funding for this day all those who took part did so voluntarily. From the great response Isis had on the day they are looking at organising future events. Tzatziki recipe iNGRedieNTs

• 350g/12oz Greek yoghurt • 1 cucumber • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 2 cloves of garlic, grated finely • dash of extra virgin olive oil • paprika, for sprinkling

The Cuisine scene Welcome to the second edition of ‘The Cuisine Scene’. As promised this month it’s Greek Cuisine. Greek Cuisine is a diverse Mediterranean cuisine. The most famous of foods are olives, cheese such as feta, aubergine, zucchini (courgette), and yoghurt. Greek cuisine uses olive oil and herb flavourings more than other Mediterranean Cuisines which gives it a distinctive taste. Common herbs include basil and fennel seed. Persillade’s a seasoning or sauce made with parsley and other seasonings including garlic, herbs and vinegar. Combined with bread crumbs, it is used as crust for roasted lamb chops. Mezés is a collective name for a variety of hot, cold, spicy or savory small dishes served as an appetizer very popular in Greece. It’s a great way to sample local Greek dishes and is often served with wine and dips such as tzatziki, a delicious yoghurt and cucumber dip served with pita bread. Greek cuisine boasts a tradition of over 4,000 years. Its flavours are traditional to the seasons and its geography. Its culinary influence spread via ancient Rome, throughout Europe and beyond. The cuisine reached America in the 18th century and has continued to spread thanks. It is now widely celebrated through festivals, famously in Boston and Santa Cruz, California.

1. The best result is achieved by peeling and de-seeding the cucumber before grating. Hang the grated cucumber in a tea towel in order to squeeze out all the excess liquid. 2. Combine the yoghurt, cucumber, lemon juice and garlic. Add a dash of olive oil and sprinkle with paprika. 3. A delicious alternative for dipping your aubergines, breads or nachos. Newton Church

Laughing child

Newton is a praying church where love and grace abounds: I know, because they pray for me, for many are my wounds. When times were dark I felt a peace that cannot be explained: All I know is Christ was there, with me, amidst my pains. So if you pass this little church while walking to the beach: Stop awhile and meditate; God’s never out of reach. This church has stood the test of time through many centuries: A house of prayer for pilgrims to rest upon their knees And praise our loving Father for bringing them this far: With thankful hearts they travel on, although their journey may be long; Renewed by prayer, refreshed by grace; They met God within this place.

Hear the happy laughter peeling See the tiny footsteps reeling Watch the tottering and the tumbling And the rising up again For this life is ours for living Given for love and joy and singing And for always overcoming Though our tumbling cause us pain

so I said, I’ll ring a rasta with a blaster, who looks like chan canasta, but it wont be a disaster , coz there’s no one who is faster he’s the master at delivering pasta.

Know that life is still for living Given for laughter, love and singing And in all for growing, learning Even through the loss or pain Sometimes still we’re tottering, stumbling But we’ll not indulge in grumbling Know we’re made for overcoming And to laugh and rise again PauLiNe LeWis Porthcawl

The short hot shadows we seem to crave Are no longer tall and thin The winter sun has crept away And the summer sun crept in.

Sam walked into the dog’s home his heart a heavy stone. He spied a friendly bulldog and thought. ‘I’m not alone.’ Tommy moved up close and said. “Don’t you worry mate, It’s not all doom and gloom here, but neither is it great.” Said Sam, “Thanks, for the info I’m really feeling low, Once old, you are unwanted: then they let you go, I have been replaced already by a Bichon, or some such. A fluffy empty headed pup, no-one could call him butch. I gave them, years of service, love, loyalty and more. But now, none of that matters, since I’ve been shown the door.” Tommy said. “Don’t worry Sam you’re not alone my friend. Bulldogs aren’t wanted anymore; we’re no longer the trend. Just forget about the past Sam when you were at your best. Our working days are over lad, now we can have a rest.”

The trees that once stood tall and proud Are turning bare and cold And as the leaves float gently down They paint the landscape gold A single snow drop gently falls Soon joined by many more As day light breaks dawn then reveals A blanket on the floor The winter sun now starts to shine and gently warms the ground And soon the silence is replaced By a ‘trickling water’ sound Trees that once stood bare and cold Have buds all fresh and new And a sea of blue bells in the woods Are fed by morning dew

Book of the month:

THE WHITE PRINCESS by Philippa Gregory

This is the fifth book of Gregory’s engrossing series. It is the haunting story of the mother of the Tudors, Elizabeth of York, wife to Henry VII and the beautiful eldest daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville. The young princess Elizabeth faces a conflict of loyalties. Forced into marriage with Henry VII, she must reconcile her slowly growing love for him with her loyalty to the House of York, and choose between her mother’s rebellion and her husband’s tyranny. Then she has to meet the Pretender, whose claim denies the House of Tudor itself… We have had an exciting time at Porthcawl Library where over 250 children have taken part in the Summer Read-

ing Challenge where children have to read six books over the summer. We have also had some fantastic storytimes and craft sessions which the children (and parents) have enjoyed. Our skeleton has met lots of new people but sadly now has had to return home, but the children have enjoying making scary crafts. I will be visiting the schools this month to give out certificates to all those children completing the challenge. For young people, this month sees the launch of our Teen Reading Group (minimum age 12) on Friday 4th October at 5pm. eLaiNe WiNsTaNLeY

Local Book: a VICTorIan naTUraLIsT’s odYsseY The Life & Times of Professor John Henry Salter DSc (London) 1862–1942 by dr Gilbert w Clark Born in the village of Llanbadarn-Fawr, Cardiganshire in 1921. educated at the village school atop Primrose Hill, and there really were primroses all the way! Married in 1951 to Megan Llewellyn Jones who died in 2010. Two children and four grand-children, this tale is of a scholarly man, whom I was privileged to know. He passed through the last decade of his life as I passed through my teens. He had seen the British Empire reach its zenith, a period where no value was placed on wild-life conservation. Big game hunting having been

approved of in the highest echelons of society. Birds had suffered badly and amongst them in the UK was the red kite. By 1870 it had been virtually wiped out except for a few pairs in the fastnesses of rural Wales. Having entered Wales in 1891 to join the Botany Department of the University, DR Salter heard of their parlous plight and in 1893 ‘bent his shoulder to the wheel.’ All this gave scope for expanding a simple biography into the “Life and Times” of Dr Salter: hence the title ‘Odyssey’. It also allowed me to show how an interest in natural history can lead to the most unexpected places and into the company of people from all walks of life in both war and peace. Have you ever wondered what Margam Park would have looked like in 1700? If you have, then come for a visit to see two new topographical paintings. They show opposite views of Margam House, built by the Mansel family out of the remains of Margam Abbey in the 16th century. The house was destroyed in the 18th century and these are the only substantial visual records of the house that exist today.

What a busy month! I was an extra in a band’s promo, filmed and interviewed for a new ‘Rock Talk’ TV internet series and was even dropped off in a haunted churchyard! Mind you, the only thing that went ‘bump in the night’ was me! (Blame my minders – I still have the bruises!) Talking of walls, I really enjoyed prog band ‘Adrian’s Wall’s’ party gig and guitarist Jeff Wills is one of the best in the business. Support act

When Henry VIII dissolved Margam Abbey in 1536, Sir Rice Mansel bought the estate and began to convert the old monastery into a family home. A few years later, he was given permission to form a walled park around the house; from this point Margam Park was born. It was developed and extended by successive members of the family over the next 150 years and is a visual testimony to the Mansel family’s command over the locality and its people. The paintings provide a glimpse into the lives of the Mansel-Talbot families, who dominated life during this period, but are also important documents of a landscape and a way of life which has now been completely transformed by industrialisation. Porthcawl Male Choir

By the time you read this our annual concert will, we hope, have been an outstanding success. With a guest artiste of the calibre of John Owen Jones, it cannot fail to be and at the time of writing ticket sales were rapidly heading towards a full house. Organising such an event requires a great deal of hard work on the part of our MD, Mair Jones, Secretary, Ray

Street, Chairman, Roy Bowen and Treasurer Howard Evans. Special mention must be made of Brian Whitehead who did an outstanding job in designing and publishing the programme. Finally, of course, the choristers, without whom there would be no concert. The ‘Dilwyn Evans Bursary’ awarded annually by the choir to a young person who has been accepted by a university or college to study music, has this year been awarded to Porthcawl Comprehensive pupil, Daniel Pugh-Lloyd who will read music at St. Peters College Oxford. He was trained in the organ at Margam Abbey by Robert Court and honed his skills in this magnificent instrument in Porthcawl’s All Saints and St John’s churches. We wish Daniel every success in both his University education and future musical career JoHN WiLLiaMs

As part of the Splash-up weekend, saturday 26th October, Sustainable Wales are organising a mini cultural festival with live performance, poetry, music, film and painting. Alongside there will be opportunity to browse stalls, join activities, have a coffee or a drink. Enjoy a performance of ‘Josephine’s Rain’ by Robert Minhinnick, Peter Morgan, Richard Thomas, Eamon Bourke and Siobhan Grice. ‘Josephine’s Rain’ is a thirty minute evocation of the extraordinary storm that did so much damage to Porthcawl in 1995. For those who remember

The Wave of Change and Lantern decorating october 26th: The Wave of Change. 1pm – 5pm The stage door and 5.30pm – 6.30pm Coney Beach

Artist Siobhan Grice will be doing a three-part public art installation entitled ‘The Wave of Change’. She began this with ‘Watching’ on 21st September, a 24hr stay on Coney Beach followed by ‘Catching’ in the Pavilion’s Stage Door between 1pm – 4.30pm where images of her stay on Coney Beach shown alongside a public air and share of views on the changes you’d like to see in Porthcawl. See Sustainable Wales for exact times and other events there that day.

‘Josephine’ the winds were close to hurricane status, sinking boats and destroying part of the seafront, together with the weather vane on the Pavilion roof. Was it an indication of climate change? Who can say? The performers promise a musical and poetic dramatisation of a famous incident in recent history, the ‘Porthcawl hurricane’. Artist, Siobhan Grice, will be painting live whilst the music plays. Eamon Bourke will screen his speciallycommissioned film. The Sustainable Wales ‘Green Room’ mini-festival commences noon on Saturday, 26th October. Donations welcome on the door. A trio of daredevil dads who embarked on a 13,000 foot skydive for ADHD Bridgend have thanked their supporters and sponsors following their successful landings. Craig Piper, Matt Kenward and Pyle Councillor Luke Ellis took the plunge together at Swansea Skydive Centre. Zoe Piper, Vice Chair and Lead Fundraiser for ADHD Bridgend commended the fearless fathers who took flight to raise awareness of ADHD and the voluntary work being done to support families and adults living with ADHD in the Bridgend area. Mrs Piper said: “We are all so proud of the guys and the lengths and heights they were prepared to go to to raise awareness for ADHD Bridgend! We know that more needs to be done to improve understanding of ADHD and the reality of the condition in children and adults which is why our campaign, “Doing Something Different 4 ADHD” is so important. Cllr Luke Ellis, Chair of the group added; “Too often, barriers are put in place and labels attached to people that can hold them back. We want to

share the message that ADHD can be accepted as a condition that can harness creativity and channel fearlessness in the right direction. I think Craig and Matt have shown tremendous courage and dedication in doing this for ADHD Bridgend and now we are all back safe and sound I think it’s fair to say that the sky is the limit for ADHD Bridgend” For further information about the work of ADHD Bridgend or to find out more about their family or adult support groups for people with ADHD log on to www.ADHDBridgend.org.uk CLLR Luke eLLis

Prydie and Ryan Bevington to assist with their knowledge and experience. With the return of several of last years u16s this is the first time for several years that they have had three different age groups to choose from. Such is this strength of depth that although hit by the unavailability of several players at each match played so far, due to holidays, summer jobs etc. they have been able to not only compete, but in fact, win both games. Cwmavon and Rhydfelin both played a similar style of game with their bigger forwards trying to dictate the game. However, Porthcawl absorbed this pressure and both away teams had no answer to the pace and skills of the Home Team. Next on their campaign is Mountain Ash RFC on Sat 31st at The South Road ground. Training every Tuesday and Thursday, 6.45–8.30pm. All welcome. CHRis WiNTLe

Bridgend Town Juniors FC Bridgend Town Juniors FC want to recruit more players at two age groups this season. After a long summer which saw several players leave for pastures new, both the Under 16s and the Under 14s are looking to strengthen their squads. Bridgend Town is a locally based football club providing opportunities for children between the ages of 6–16 home games and training are in Newbridge Fields. We aim to help our players to develop their skills and fitness and focus on them enjoying playing football. The U16 team has two coaches, Andrew Morgan and Leigh Shattock. Anyone in school Year 11 who is keen to play football regularly should contact Andrew on 07561 565647. The U14 team is coached by Deryck Evans and Jason Davies. Keen footballers in school Year

9 should contact Deryck on 07807 537107. All coaches are volunteers and fully accredited by the Welsh FA. RiCHaRd LeoNaRd

Porthcawl Runners There were seven members of Porthcawl Runners who entered the Cardiff 10k. Terry Jones who has been working hard on his speedwork all summer was the first member over the line in a time of 36:56. Julian Maine 40:53 and Neil Harries 41:39, his fastest time over this distance, were the other male members to compete. A female quartet was made up of Romana Maine 48:46, Helen Scott 50:22, Karen Phillips 56:04 and Angela Walsh 62:01. Most of this group of runners are training for the upcoming Cardiff Half Marathon and this race gives them a good indication of their current fitness levels. A couple of notable performances from two past members who have gone on to train with bigger clubs were Chris Jenkins 35:58 (Neath Harriers) and Gabriella Maine 39:31 (Les Croups Cardiff) who broke the magic 40 minute barrier for the first time. It is pleasing to see both athletes performing well for their new clubs. The Club now has 45 members and has recently recruited a few new members, particularly since the start-up of the Porthcawl Parkrun which takes place every Saturday morning at 9am on the promenade. Porthcawl Lifeguard Club On behalf of Gary Fisher and his team who generously gave up their time on the last weekend in June to raise money for the club, we would like to thank everyone for their support and kind donations. The West-East Coast Cycle Challenge raised over £1,300 which will be used to purchase new training aids which are very much needed by the club’s volunteer workers so they can continue teaching youngsters in critical life saving skills. Seasoned cyclists Tony Barber and Sam Greaves made light

work of the 104 miles though everyone involved in the relay (Ross Clarke, Dave Bendall , Lyndon Hellings, Rich Taylor, Gary Fisher) completed the challenge. However the hero award has to be shared by both Keith Fox and Gary Smith who displayed relentless determination to complete the full 104 miles. I would also like to thank Ronnie Quinn who gave up his Saturday to drive one of the vehicles to allow the full team to cycle the last 20 miles together to the finish line. Once again, thanks to all those who took part and supported this event, we are all very grateful. iaN eLLisoN
