GARDENING
LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
October and the nights are really drawing in, leaves begin to fall, chilly nights are a sign of things to come. It’s time to prepare the greenhouse for winter, protect and insulate with bubble wraps and fleece to keep those tender plants safe during the winter months. Time to plant those bulbs and prepare your beds for spring displays. Look after lawns, rake and keep those leaves under control. The final cut of the lawn is usually around the end of October and best not to cut too low. Garlic can be planted, as can prepared hyacinths for indoor colour and perfume. Laleston Gardening Club had a very successful two-day Festival to celebrate our 50th Anniversary in September; we would like to thank all those that supported us we are extremely grateful, it is very much appreciated. We will hold our AGM on Friday 8th October at 7.30pm. We hope to announce further activities soon.

At the time of writing we are eagerly anticipating our enrolment night and first flower demonstration, which is to be held on October 6th at Trinity Church at 7.30 We hope to see many of our members joining us again and to welcome new members. After such a long time we are all keen to learn new skills, meet together and enjoy the events, which are planned. WEDNESDAY 3RD NOVEMBER 7.30 AT TRINITY CHURCH is our pre Christmas Open Evening. We are lucky to host Elizabeth Gordon as our demonstrator. She is currently the chairman of our local Area of NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies). She is a fantastic flower arranger and her displays of Christmas flower arrangements should be wonderful. The evening is open to all members and any visitors, with tickets available at the door. If you would like to join our group but missed enrolment night please come to any of our meetings and for further details of our full programme and events please consult our Facebook page or ring 01656222985

The sun is sitting lower in the sky and the evenings are drawing in, autumn is here! This season is all about picking up and packing up before winter arrives (cheerful isn’t it!) To ensure a vibrant display next spring, plant pansies, bellis daises and gorgeous smelling wallflowers, cut back faded perennials to 5cm above ground level, but don’t be too tidy seed heads are great for insects and look fab covered in Autumn dew, a treat in the mornings! Once your borders are looking good spread a thick layer of compost over them, don’t worry about digging it in, let the worms do the hard work for you. Sometimes it seems pointless the never ending raking up of leaves when the wind blows even more onto your lawn, but stick with it and think of all the lovely leaf mould you can make, it’s good stuff! An added bonus is slugs love to hid in fallen leaves so you’re dong them out of a winter home. Yippee! Its time to start mowing less frequently as growth slows down, but I guarantee however bare your lawn looks the grass will still grow beautifully between the paving slabs!
