CALLING ALL POLICE, PCSOS ETC TO PYLE JENNINGS BUILDING FOR A FUNDRAISING WEEKEND! Dear Editor, The people of Pyle (and in particular in the Hazel Grove area of Pyle) need to be made aware that pavements are for pedestrians, wheelchair and pushchair users and guide dogs and NOT for the parking of cars. So often it is necessary to walk into the road as pavements are completely blocked. Evenings and weekends are particularly bad. People also need educating that a red traffic light means stop at the main Pyle crossroads. It is rare for a minimum of 2 or 3 cars not to come through on the red particularly coming from the North Cornelly direction. There will be a crash one day. Perhaps when the extent of the problem is witnessed traffic light cameras can be considered. Speeding (particularly coming in to Pyle on the A48 from the Port Talbot direction). It is not unusual for cars still to be doing 50 or more mph even passing Ye Olde Wine House. Car drivers need to be aware that that there is sheltered accommodation for the elderly on the left as they enter the village and these people regularly cross the road there to catch their bus to Swansea. Another accident waiting to happen. Speeding is also a problem within the Hazel Grove area itself where some form of traffic calming may well save the life of a child. Hazel Grove Resident, Pyle (Name and address supplied)

LOCAL PHOTOS Philip Griffiths, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, You may be reading this after the event itself, but this October 2nd, myself and my team – Samaritan Sprinters, will be taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon. We were lucky enough to be picked for this years BBC Wales show, Alfie’s Angel’s with Rugby star Gareth Thomas, along with 95 other Angels! The programme focuses on people who have never run before but want to kick start a healthier lifestyle, and began on Friday September 16th. Watch out for us! We are raising funds for two amazing charities, Motor Neurones Disease Association and Bridgend Samaritans. Sadly last year my Mum, Linda, was diagnosed with the condition and my family have made it a mission to raise as much awareness and donations as we can. Joining the team is my Dad, Glenn White and Sister-in-Law, Kate White. Myself and two other team-mates, Hannah Harbison-Evans and Susan Francis are volunteers at the Bridgend branch of Samaritans. The branch runs solely on donations to keep it open, so we want to raise as much funds, as well as awareness as we possibly can. You can donate to either charity by visiting our donation pages below. And don’t forget to follow our journey by tuning in! https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/samaritansprinters?utm_ source=Facebook&utm_medium=fundraisingpage&utm_ content=samaritansprinters&utm_campaign=pfp-share Sarah Llewellyn, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, During the school summer holidays, 9 year old TiaLayla Ruddle and her dad Ben, climbed Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike within 2 days of one another for the Bring Joy foundation. This remarkable achievement was fulfiling one of Tia’s many dreams of adventuring whilst helping others through fund raising. Tia had already climbed Snowdon and has done Pen-yFan many times. Tia says her big goal is to climb Everest when she is older - just like her uncle Angus did in 2010. Tia has raised a whopping £2,100 for the Bring Joy Foundation - a charity set up by Home Instead Senior Care in 2014. The charity provides support and enjoyment to the elderly and people with dementia. Ben Ruddle, who is the owner of Home Instead Senior Care, Swansea, says this charity is very close to the hearts of us all as we are all affected by it at some stage in our lives. Tia, who attends West Park Primary in Porthcawl, says she will continue to work hard to fulfil her life’s ambition and hopes to continue to raising money along the way. To show your support for Tia and her chosen charity please visit: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/bringjoy1

GCSE Results 2016 • English (A*- C) 79.5% • Mathematics (A*- C) 79.5% • Science (A*- C) 98.6% • Overall over 80% of pupils gained 5 or more A*- C The students, their families and the school are all celebrating an excellent set of GCSE results. PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL

A warm welcome back to school to all of our pupils, parents and carers. Our 30 new nursery children have already settled into school life and are ready to begin their learning journeys. Elections have taken place to select our 2016 Digital Leaders, Eco and School Council representatives. All candidates planned and prepared their manifestoes and were voted for by their peers. They are all looking forward to their respective challenges in helping make Pîl Primary an ever better place to learn and play. Tuesday 13th September marked 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl, the world’s number one storyteller. Pîl joined the global celebrations by hosting a special day full of Dahl themed literacy activities. Pupils and staff came to school dressed as their favourite characters and participated in a special whole school assembly where Harriet the librarian presented certificates to those who successfully completed this year’s summer reading challenge. The day was a ‘splendiferous’ success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Sarah Mustoe Literacy Leader

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY CELEBRATES ROALD DAHL DAY IN GLORIUMPTIOUS STYLE! After a relaxing and surprisingly sunny summer holiday, the new school year has started with a bang! September the 13th was Roald Dahl Day and this year was extra special as he would have been 100 years old. To celebrate we had a Roald Dahl Character Day and almost all of Roald Dahl’s amazing creations were on show! It was amazing to see everyone from Fantastic Mr Fox and Willy Wonka to The Grand High Witch and Mrs Twit. We would like to thank all our staff, parents and pupils for the effort they put in. This year also sees us continue as a Literacy Hub school, which involves working with other schools across South Wales. By the end of September we will have helped over 20 schools develop Visual Literacy, which is an approach that uses powerful images and videos as a stimulus for extended writing. We have another exciting and busy year ahead and the best way to keep up with everything is on our school Twitter account. Our user name is @PorthcawlPS and this is the main place we share photos and celebrate our success so feel free to follow us! Andrew Wood Head Teacher

POEMS OH WELL

They took away my bowel and cut out half my liver The very thought of which still can make me shiver I’ve got a metal hip they might replace my knee there’s getting less and less of the Me that once was Me My hearing is quite bad and worsens with the years So they saddled me with gizmos to stick in both my ears Next week it’s my right eye and I know that it sounds drastic They’re cutting out the lens and replacing it with plastic It all sounds very tragic but it breaks me up to tell That all I get from people is “Christ Jim, you look well” Jim Kyle, North Cornelly

YOUR LAST GOODBYE TO THEM We often wait for sad news, Of those we love so much, Instead of taking a few minutes, To visit them or just get in touch.

There is a sense of guilt, You will feel that day which ends so sad, But it was your own decisions Not to call in the spare time you had. No matter if it is family, A good friend or a work colleague, Your conscience will be clear, When you find it was their time to leave. So if you’re thinking about someone special, Call them just to say hello again, Because you will never forgive yourself, If it was your last goodbye to them. INEVITABILITY

IF YOU JUST TRY TO BELIEVE

You don’t need to be religious, Even intelligent or clever, To believe your loved one hasn’t gone, You will sense them around you forever. Their body form may have left this earth, But their soul and spirit still lives on, Even thou you don’t see them physically, They will prove they’ve not gone.

Nature’s sweet summer song is all but gone. Many birds have journeyed to warmer climes, But still I hear a chorus and a Swallow chimes. The constant hum of the Bumblebee, Has faded to a buzz, intermittently. Whispers of autumn carried on the breeze, Nature glides through seasons with such ease. Never will I cease to be amazed At what Nature truly entails, And ne’er will she cease to set my heart ablaze, For she will continue when man fails. Rachel Owens, Bridgend

Their suffering and pain in life, Would all just disappear, With spiritual healing above, Their soul will then move near. For a while you may feel tearful, With loads of anger as you grieve, They will try and give you a little comfort, If you just try to believe. Written by David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend

News ’BE A COUNCILLOR’ EVENTS THIS OCTOBER This will be my last column as Leader as I am standing down at the 2017 local elections. Having served as a councillor for 20 years, eight of which have been as the council leader, I can honestly say that it has been a challenging and rewarding experience. Something that has been consistently apparent over the years is that there is a lot of misunderstanding over what a councillor can and can’t do, what rules we have to work within and what councils are actually responsible for. That’s why Bridgend County Borough Council is marking Local Democracy Week with two ‘Be A Councillor’ events on 11th-12th October. These are designed to encourage residents from different backgrounds to get involved in local politics and provide an opportunity to talk with councillors and officers, find out about the role, discover how councils are funded, how departments function and more. The response has been excellent, and I’m sure that the events will be a big success. Thanks to everyone who has followed this column over the last few years. Representing the community and working for the best interests of Bridgend County Borough has been a true honour, one for which I will always be grateful. Councillor Mel Nott OBE Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

PROCLAMATION DAY WILL MARK COUNTDOWN TO URDD 2017 Around 3,000 children and adults representing local schools, colleges and clubs will be taking part in a ‘proclamation procession’ through Bridgend town centre on Saturday 8 October to mark the official countdown to the Urdd National Eisteddfod being held in the county borough next summer. And more are welcome to join in and cheer them on as the colourful parade makes its way at 11:30am from Bridgend College to Newbridge Fields, where there will be lots of entertainment, activities and stalls to enjoy up until about 2:30pm. From marching brass and samba bands, to circus performers and ‘Cyw’ characters, it promises to be a packed afternoon to celebrate the showpiece Welsh language youth festival coming to Bridgend College’s Pencoed Campus between 29 May and 3 June 2017. The Urdd National Eisteddfod offers a unique opportunity to showcase our heritage, our future, and the amazing talents of our young people, and is expected to attract up to 100,000 visitors. Several local fundraising groups have been set up by volunteers to raise the necessary funds for staging Urdd 2017, and if you’d like to find out more about getting involved, please email Jordan Morgan-Hughes at Jordan@urdd.org for further details.

WOODCHIP CAMPAIGNERS I recently joined protesting campaigners at their public meeting in Porthcawl to find out more about plans to open a wood recycling centre at South Cornelly. The applicant is South Wales Wood Recycling which already has a centre on the common near Heolycyw and has also stockpiled 10,000 tonnes of woodchip at the Llynfi Power Station site without planning consent. Residents and councillors from both areas have been badly affected by lorries, dust, noise and a fire in the power station stockpiles. The proposals for Cornelly would see 70 deliveries of scrap wood a day by lorry to the site which would be open 24 hours for 365 days a year. Processing machinery would be operated from 6am to 6pm creating both a dust and noise nuisance. The meeting heard that depending on the wind, thousands of residents living in a wide radius of the site, including Porthcawl, Kenfig Hill and Cefn Cribwr, could be affected by dust and pollution from the PM2.5 particles which would also be emitted. I have lodged objections to the scheme which will be determined by Bridgend planners. I urge all those with concerns to do the same. HARBOURSIDE NEWS October will be a very busy month for the Harbourside Team, as we await approval of our planning application for the Maritime Centre and the planned additions to enhance the Marina. Extensive work has been completed with our professional team to enable us to go out to tender for the construction. We are well placed to meet our objective of commencing the build in early 2017. Our SeaQuest division is also busy, with our next events consisting of Halloween and Brownies activities during the October half term. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Anne Davidson to our SeaQuest team. Anne and Claire Godfrey are also in the final stages of setting up our after-school club, Little Urchins, for children aged eight to eleven. WE ARE 99% OF THE WAY TO ERADICATING POLIO GLOBALLY

WORK BEGINS AT THE JENNINGS BUILDING

For most of the world, Polio is a distant memory yet the disease still exists in a small number of countries and is still affecting populations especially children under 5. In July 2016 2 cases of Polio were detected in Northern Nigeria, the first cases in the country since July 2014. Sadly in Afghanistan and Pakistan Doctors and nurses have been executed for inoculating children as the Taliban consider such practise un-Islamic and think they are used by spy agencies to kill their fighters. The Rotary Trust Foundation has supported the Polio Eradication effort for over 30 years with great success, new cases have fallen from 1,000 a day to less than 1 a day in 2014. Globally the disease has been reduced by more than 99%. Unlike most diseases polio can be eradicated. None of the 3 strains of the virus can survive outside of the human body for long periods of time. There is a real possibility that polio can be eradicated completely by 2020. The Rotary clubs in Porthcawl and Bridgend give some money from their fundraising to global polio eradication, next time you see members collecting in the street know that donations can have global implications.

Following the granting of a long-term lease by Bridgend County Borough Council, Wales-based developers ABA Holdings are hard at work transforming the Jennings Building and Customs House as part of an eight-month, £2.5m project that will create jobs, deliver new waterfront facilities and bring the prominent Grade II listed building back into public use. The ground floor will offer several new commercial units including a 5,000 sq ft theatre-style kitchen restaurant and bar complete with full-height atrium, and the upper level will feature 13 units with loft bedrooms that will enable occupants to live and work on site. All 13 of the ‘live-work’ units have already been taken up, and the businesses that will occupy the restaurant and other commercial units will be announced as soon as negotiations are complete. More than 30 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the project, and when complete, a further 50 positions will be established throughout the revamped premises. The project has been funded in partnership with Finance Wales, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and the council, and forms an important part of our ongoing regeneration plans for Porthcawl. I’ll bring you more news as this exciting project develops further.

HIGH PRAISE FOR THE PORTHCAWL ART SOCIETY’S EXHIBITION AT THE WELSH ASSEMBLY Happy 50th Anniversary to the Porthcawl Art Society. Last month, I was very pleased to host an exhibition of their work at the Welsh Assembly. The exhibition was a great success and there were some truly fantastic paintings on display including seascapes, floral pictures, local scenes and wildlife paintings. It was a real treat to have the paintings on display at the Assembly. The Artists are hugely talented and a number of AMs, support staff, Assembly Commission staff and many visitors to the Assembly all had the opportunity to enjoy some of their amazing artwork. Many people also took away literature about the Art Society. I know that the Artists have won many new supporters of their work. I was also delighted to welcome members of the Porthcawl Museum to the Senedd. They had posters on display about the Museum. It continues to go from strength to strength and is a fantastic asset to the town of Porthcawl. They were there to support the Art Society. I have had great feedback on the exhibition from all those who attended the reception. Here’s to another 50 years. Carwyn Jones AM Welsh Labour Leader

This will be arranged by our craft group and we will be able to experience a range of different crafts. Visitors welcome so do come along on October 12th 2pm to All Saints Church Hall. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Have you taken the God Test? A guided self-appraisal approach to thinking through what you really believe. It involves ten questions that could change the way you think and act forever. The questions cover the ultimate issues of human life and values, not giving set answers but asking the important questions. For example; What are the main reasons you do or don’t believe in God? Or, what is the basis of your morality? And, Do you think human life is special compared to animal or plant life? Plus many more. What we think hugely affects what we do. What we believe shapes how we behave. But many people have never examined their personal belief systems. This may be why our lives are often marked by moral and ethical inconsistencies. Christians believe there is a God, and that He has made Himself known supremely in Jesus Christ, this believe shapes our lives. But what do you believe, and how do your values, and beliefs affect your behaviour? If you would like to hear more, or to take the God Test, you can contact me at Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl (01656 785046). Rev. Martin Gillard

WANTED SUSSED VOLUNTEERS A big thanks to all those volunteers who worked in summer and are either now off back to college in London - like Catryn, starting University for the first time at Warwick - like Rhys, or starting a new job, like Lucy in Porthcawl. Training will be provided with shop procedures, as well as what it means to be a community co-operative that stocks Fairtrade, local and eco-friendly goods. Develop valuable skills, (useful for your CV), make new friends whilst supporting producers both in the developing world and in your locality. THE TALBOT

The long warm days of summer are now forgotten, and we are looking forward to the Christmas season. Our Christmas lunches have been arranged for Friday, 9th and Wednesday 14th December. Our Christmas Showtime is on Saturday, 10th December, with entertainment by Keith David, a local and very popular singer/comedian. Tickets cost £12 - which includes supper, but please bring your own alcoholic beverage! Our final event - our bingo buffet is on Friday 16th December. Speaking of lunches, we serve lunch twice a week at the Talbot, every Wednesday and every Friday, when we follow lunch with an afternoon session of bingo! Our menus are planned in advance each month, so diners know what’s for lunch before they attend. Some phone in to ask for an alternative, when Julie and her kitchen team are always able to offer another choice for those who don’t like what’s being served on the day. A typical example is a beef dinner with rice pudding to follow, for £4.50, including jugs of water and tea or coffee, served on nicely laid tables by our helpful waitresses. Please call 01656 749754 for further information on any of the above. Cheryl Butcher The Talbot

WINTER PLANETS During October, Mercury can be found in the morning sky just before sunrise and is particularly easy to spot on October 11th when it will be very close to Jupiter - the brightest object in the sky. Mercury will only stay around for a few days but Jupiter will rise two hours earlier each month and become very prominent in the evening sky next spring. From November the nearest planet, Venus, will begin to climb higher in the south-western sky and will outshine Jupiter by a considerable margin. Binoculars will easily show the changing phases of the planet, which will be visible until well into the New Year. Although Mars is in the south, it’s so low in the sky that it will be very difficult to locate. It will remain faint until 2018 when it makes a particularly close approach to Earth resulting in Mars becoming brighter than Jupiter. NASA will use the opportunity to launch its InSight Explorer which will probe deep into the interior of Mars in order to find out how rocky planets formed. The probe should have been launched last May but NASA postponed it because of leaks. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

Time is hurrying along and once again the Porthcawl Rotary Posties are planning ahead for your Christmas deliveries. The good news is that you will still be able to post your Christmas cards to addresses in the CF36 postal area for only 25p – yes, that’s right … no increase …the same as the last two years! All the proceeds will go to local and international charities. We’re fine-tuning our list of local outlets where you will be able to purchase your stamps (mostly the same as the last two years) so watch out for our posters in shop windows and further information in the next edition of the Seaside News. Remember - you’ll be able to post your cards at the same outlet where you buy the stamps. The Posties will then collect and deliver the cards… whatever the weather! As the riders of the famous Pony Express said, “Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds.” The only difference is that most of us will be on Shank’s Pony! The Rotary Club of Porthcawl is so grateful for fantastic local support over the Christmas period - not only the Rotary Post but also the street collections, the Rotary Carolcade and the Christmas Tree Festival. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Do you have any wise and respected elders in your life? The reason I ask is that we all need just such a respected elder in our lives. The type of person who when tempers flare stands up, speaks and gets everyone to calm down. If we don’t have such people whom others listen to our society would be much the worse. Such respected people usually have many important qualities; however, here are just three of those. Generally, they have perspective, they can recall examples and experiences from the past that give us perspective in the present. Secondly, because of their life experience they usually have a spirit of humility. And thirdly, they are commonly blessed with courage. Our elders seldom sit silently moaning about how hard done by they are. They are usually the first to get to their feet and speak. Moreover, they often speak in ways that challenge the status quo. Who are the wise elders in our lives? What makes them wise and respected? Are we listening to them? Are we? God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Minister with Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

FEATURES PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS The Club met in the Grove Golf Club at the beginning of September. No formal meetings were held in August so it was good to see friends, exchange news, discuss events and plan for the future. As usual we had an evening meal before the business meeting. Elizabeth Jones was thanked for hosting the afternoon tea at her home during the August break. It was a very successful event both socially and financially. Invitations to events in other Inner Wheel Clubs had been received by Secretary Carol, and were accepted by some members at the meeting. Mary Emment-Lewis is our new Membership Officer. The Club will hold a Coffee Morning at Trinity Church Hall on November 11th. Diane Richardson arranged a Club outing to the Royal Mint, Llantrisant on 13th September. We had a guided tour, which included a film and a talk about the history of the Mint. Everyone had a chance to purchase and strike a coin, which was then placed in a blister pack. Afterwards we had time to look at the exhibition and visit the shop where there were interesting coins and souvenirs to purchase. Before leaving a group photograph was taken. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE LALESTON WI

SKER WI NEWS

Our September meeting was taken by Vice President Barbara Rees, who welcomed everyone back after the summer break. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and agreed. All members remembered our dear friend Joan Rule with Maureen Morgan reading a poem, written by Joan, for Laleston WI’s 20th Anniversary. We also intend to recite her poem on the occasion of our 50th Anniversary, in 2018. Everyone agreed we had a busy and enjoyable summer, with our successful ‘Afternoon Tea’ and trips to Tyntesfield House and Picton Castle. Future events include the WI Quiz, Federation Dinner at The Hi-Tide, Porthcawl and our Christmas lunch at the Atlantic Hotel, Porthcawl. The evening’s ‘Harvest Auction’ was extremely successful, a huge ‘thank you’ to Maureen Morgan for all her hard work. Ann Rees won the raffle and Barbara Rees gave a vote of thanks to Maureen. Our next meeting will be held on 6th October at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). The guest speaker, Alan Badmington, will be ‘Lost for Words’. Our competition covers ‘Autumnal Colours’. New members are always welcome, why not come and join us? For further information call Diane on 01656 656600. Dawn Storie

The September meeting of Sker WI was held recently when president Nora Williams welcomed 43 members back after the summer break. The Summer Fayre did well and the proceeds will go towards future events. Plans for next year’s programme are well underway. The speaker for the evening was Mrs Margaret Rogers who gave a very interesting talk on London Olympics 2012. She was one of 250,000 across the country who applied and was one of 75,000 to be chosen. In the run up to the Olympics the Game Makers went to an Orientation Day in Wembley. There was also training days and everybody was provided with all they needed in the way of uniforms, which were designed by Stella McCartney. Margaret did 8 shifts over 14 days between 10am - 8pm and especially on the first day needed help to find their way around. Her duties included checking tickets and directing people to their seats. Everyone who helped had a thank you letter from David Cameron. The next meeting will be on Thursday 13th October at 7pm in St David’s Church Hall, Nottage when the speaker will be Mrs Nora Clarke on Guide Dog/puppy walker. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

DIVORCE

CELEBRITY DIVORCES CREATE UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS High profile celebrity divorces, such as Johnny Depp’s spilt from Amber Heard, are creating “unrealistic expectations” for divorcing couples, according to family lawyers. They warn that a recent spate of high-profile divorces among the mega-rich are breeding a culture of unreasonable demands in normal divorce cases which can pile on the stress and pressure already created by separation. During the divorce process, Hollywood actress Heard published her expenses which she claimed ran to US$44,000.00 per month, despite an average monthly income of US$10,000.00. In the UK former supermodel Christina Estrada was successful in obtaining a share of her billionaire Saudi husband’s £200 million fortune in one of Britain’s biggest ever High Court divorce battles. She claimed that she needed £62 million to buy a new home, £1 million a year to dress herself, with £58,000.00 for two luxury handbags, as well as £23,000.00 for six casual handbags and £35,000.00 for ten clutch bags. These kind of claims are not helpful in the vast majority of divorces. Couples need to have realistic expectations throughout the divorce process. There is no principle in English law that a spouse has to be kept in a particular lifestyle. The standard of living of the parties during the marriage must be taken into account, but it is only one of many factors and in most cases, Parties have to taper their expenditure after a settlement. The court is obliged to consider whether it is possible to achieve a clean break between the Parties, or whether the needs of one party require maintenance to be paid to another party, whether in isolation or as a means of topping up an existing income source. A more realistic approach would help to facilitate quicker and there for more cost effective divorce proceedings. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

If you decide to separate or divorce your spouse there are a number of issues you need to consider. If you are the main or only earner in a marriage, you may need to continue providing financial support to your spouse before reaching any final agreement. Conversely, if you are financially dependent on your spouse, ask for suitable arrangements to be made. If your spouse refuses, you can apply to the court for an interim financial order. If you are concerned that your spouse will abuse them, you could close joint bank and credit card accounts. If your spouse is the sole owner of the family home, you can register your home rights to prevent the home being sold without your agreement. When considering the financial settlement, the first priority is to look after the welfare and financial needs of any children, more specifically, children under 16 and older children who are in full-time education or have a learning disability. In addition, the parent who no longer lives with the children will normally provide financial support. You can negotiate an agreement on child maintenance between yourselves or involve the Child Support Agency “CSA”. The other key factors to be taken into account include: • Each spouse’s income and other financial resources. Actual income, rather than prospects. Any pension entitlements are also taken into account. • Each spouse’s financial needs. • How long you have been married and how old each spouse is. The longer the marriage, the more likely it is that the less wealthy spouse will be entitled to a substantial share of the assets and/or continuing maintenance. • The contribution each spouse has made. Importantly, looking after the house and children can be as valuable a contribution as that of the partner who earned the income. The right agreement for you will depend on your circumstances and objectives. As a starting point, you should both fully disclose your financial positions. Once you have reached agreement, you should apply to the Court for a Consent Order. This allows the court to check that the agreement you have reached is fair. It also limits the ability of either spouse to ask the court to change financial arrangements, and makes it easier to take action if your former spouse fails to honour his or her commitments. If you cannot reach agreement between yourselves, you will need to apply to the Court for a Financial Order.

Finance WHY USE BARTHOLOMEW HAWKINS?

GWYN WILLIAMS

It is a question that I am often asked. Firstly we are very proud to have been awarded the prestigious “Charetered Financial Planners” title by the Chartered Insurance Institute. This is only awarded to firms that are committed to developing and maintaining the expertise and capability of their people. As a Chartered firm we must ensure that staff members acquire and retain the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver the highest quality advice. The Chartered status helps us attract and retain the best staff. Talented professionals want to work for ambitious, principled organisations, and the corporate Chartered status is a clear of the professional standing of a potential employer. Above all the Chartered Status – granted by the Privy Council – is the industry’s gold standard for financial planners. It is a commitment to an overall standard of customer excellence and professionalism. When you combine this with our Investors in People award, it is clear to see why more and more people are turning to us to help them plan their financial affairs.

We generally focus on a current topic of interest. However this month we are focussing on the person behind the planning. Gwyn Williams is a Chartered Accountant of 30 years standing as well as a Chartered Financial Planner and Chairman of Swansea Building Society. This combination allows him to have a unique approach to planning for business owners and high net worth private clients alike. His ability to analyse your overall position, whilst understanding your business (limited company and sole trade/partnership) accounts as well as your personal wealth position is coupled with his ability to tailor a very technical tax planning strategy, using all available government approved tax allowances/exemptions. Gwyn only uses the HMRC handbook, we will not involve ourselves or our clients in any of the more ‘esoteric’ tax strategies! He combines the above with a natural talent to explain in clear and easily understood terms the planning strategy which is complemented by cashflow forecasting, using achievable and realistic assumptions, to provide the reassurance that clients need – the reassurance that Gwyn does really understand what you have, what you want and has a clear personalised plan to achieve results in the best interests of the business/company and you as an individual. Gwyn is supported by a team of experienced and highly qualified Chartered Accountants, Chartered Tax Advisors and Certified Financial Planners and therefore our clients know they are always receiving holistic advice in the true sense of the word, as each report has input from a team of professionals each with their own specialisms: The real value of our process is demonstrated during the six monthly regular review meetings where we demonstrate what we planned and how this is developing. From that first review meeting we move from forecasting to actual tangible results, moving from our forecasts to the actual progress of your plan. This is where we believe we are different, and add true value to our client relationships. For an initial, no obligation conversation, please contact Gwyn (01656) 867167 or gwyn@cstwealth.co.uk

PRICE WAR - EQUITY RELEASE RATES DROP AND KEEP DROPPING.... Fed by the surge in lenders trying to get interest-only mortgages paid off by borrowers, together with the need for those borrowers to find a new way of raising capital, a price war has broken out amongst the Equity Release lenders in the UK. We’re all aware of the record low interest rates we’ve enjoyed since 2009 due to the Bank of England slashing interest rates, however we’ve never seen the interest rates on Equity Release schemes come anywhere near the rates for standard mortgages. Well, that day has arrived with a bang. Led by huge competition in the market, some rates for Equity Release have now fallen BELOW THREE PER CENT – almost as low as standard mortgage rates. Add into that equation, the fact that some lenders are offering very decent cash-backs to help with costs and all of a sudden, Equity Release now offers incredibly competitive products, all properly regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This is not just fantastic news for new borrowers but also affords the opportunity for long-standing borrowers to seek refinancing of their current deals for cheaper ones, rather like we tend to do when remortgaging when a fixed rate ends. I have to stress that there is NO guarantee that everyone will be able to switch rates, as this depends on a number of factors, including property value and age of the borrowers. However, to find out costs nothing and we are here to help borrowers do so. An experienced Equity Release specialist will know the market inside out and will have access to virtually every scheme that is out there, from the ever increasing number of later life lenders who are now offering solutions. Some lenders are specialising in allowing INTEREST ONLY for life to older borrowers, which is a vital lifeline to those who cannot raise capital in any other way. Call us on 01656 782545 for a chat in confidence and we’ll be pleased to point you in the right direction. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545 Seaside News | 40

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

All gardeners have to plan ahead and now is the time to fastforward to spring 2017. Its bulb planting time, crocus, and snowdrops will show themselves early February if planted now. It is also an ideal time to take cuttings and gather seeds for next year, both are low-cost ways of increasing your garden stock. Lupins, sweet peas, poppies and foxgloves and the lovely common garden marigold are some that have been collected. A dry day is the best time to collect seed-heads. Put them into paper bags or used envelopes never plastic bags as they will sweat, don’t forget to label them. I must admit I am like Johnny Appleseed with my marigolds - anyone show an interest and I have some ready! If the seeds are for spring sowing, store them somewhere cool and dry. Cuttings can be treated differently, early morning is the best time to take cuttings and immediately put them into a plastic bag to retain moisture until you pot them up. Our annual horticultural show went well despite the pouring rain - exhibits were plentiful considering the summer weather and visitors were cheerful. Saturday 1st October is McMillan Coffee Morning. First Lecture Monday October 10th. Gwen Bradford

Autumn is well and truly here! The clocks are going back this month and the first frosts will be arriving shortly! Guess what – it’s leaf raking time - yippee! Leaves left lying around plants can encourage slugs and snails. Store collected leaves in a container for a year and the result will be a lovely organic leaf mould which is a marvellous soil conditioner. Waste not, want not! October is a good month for planting fruit bushes, and rhubarb crowns, also evergreens for hedging should be put in as soon as possible – miss this slot and you will have to wait until spring! Finish pruning roses now getting them tied in before the autumn gales, rose stems are stiff and can be snapped by high winds. Collect seed from your runner and French beans, storing them (when completely dry) in an airtight container ready for next year or even the year after! We have a Halloween party! 30th October, 5pm in the community hall, bring your little monsters, they’ll have lots of fun! Did you know – there are 2,700 types of earthworm and they’ve existed for 600 million years! Do you ever wonder how ‘keep off the grass’ signs get there? Chris Early

Health ACUTE KIDNEY INJURY

ESSENTIAL WINTER FOOT CARE

Thirteen thousand patients are dying needlessly in hospital each year from a type of kidney failure caused by dehydration. Yet all the deaths could be avoided with better care and awareness by doctors and nurses, claim specialists. Experts say acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the biggest challenges facing the NHS today with the condition claiming the lives of more than 1,000 patients a month, with many developing it while in hospital for an unrelated illness. Lack of fluid leads to a severe drop in the kidneys’ ability to filter toxins in the blood and expel waste through urine. The toxins build up, leading to fatal kidney failure. Patients who survive may need a kidney transplant. The elderly and those with other chronic health concerns such as heart disease or diabetes are particularly at risk. There have been numerous reports about the problem, including a National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death in 2009, which found that just half of UK hospitals had in place ‘good practice’ procedures for identifying and treating AKI. Last week NHS Improvement – which is charged with raising patient safety standards – issued a new safety alert reminding doctors to be aware of the signs of AKI. The condition can occur in a number of ways, as a result of an illness or due to medication but it can also occur due to a simple lack of water being drunk in hospital. Top Tips With winter fast approaching bringing freezing temperatures, it is important to know how to care for your feet during this season. Here are some ‘top tips’ to help you through the winter: • Dry your feet thoroughly after washing them, especially between the toes. Damp feet are a breeding ground for conditions like fungal nail infections and athlete’s foot. • Try to keep to a regular moisturising routine, particularly after showers/baths or at bedtime to help prevent dry, cracked skin on the heels. • Natural fibres are best for winter feet! 100% wool or two layers of cotton socks are fantastic at trapping a layer of heat, keeping your feet warm and preventing chilblains and cracked heels. • If you have to sit still for a long time this winter, periodically rotate and stretch your feet at the ankles to improve blood flow. • Regular checks with a Foot Health Professional will provide the required foot care and advice needed to maintain healthy feet. Arts HANDBELL RINGING

Have you ever thought about ringing handbells? We are a team of handbell ringers based at Newton Institute. Unlike tower bells, handbells are used to play tunes and melodies as well as peals - which are used for weddings. We play all kinds of music from Bach and Mozart all the way to west end shows, films and popular melodies. The range of music for handbells is virtually limitless. We are very active in the community and surrounding areas as well as attending handbell rallies around the country. This year we have played for local care homes as well as WI’s and money raising events for charity. We also attended a handbell rally in Devon earlier in the year and will travel to Newent in October for a regional rally. Now we are busy practicing carols to be able to fulfil our commitments leading up to Christmas. Our practice evenings are Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm. Would you like to come along and have a go? All we ask for is commitment and a sense of rhythm (a sense of humour is good too - practice nights are filled with laughter). Musical knowledge is not needed. Call Tim on 07749 254131

MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR Before the choir broke up for its summer break we sang at the United Reformed Church, Gilwern, Charity Concert for the sixth time. The five previous concerts have jointly raised the sum of almost £2,500 divided between a number of charities including Help for Heroes, The Wales Air Ambulance Service and The British Heart Foundation. This year’s charity was the Gilwern Village Defibrillator Fund. Our guest soloist was ten year old Nathaniel Stinton - a member of the award winning children’s choir Cor Heol Y March. The Programme was very well received by the audience with extremely positive feedback. After our month off we are now back into the swing of things gearing up to – yes you’ve guessed it – Christmas! It was nice to welcome some new members to the choir and for them to say how much they had enjoyed their first practice, not only the singing but also the fun and laughter. So if you were wondering what to do on those dark winter nights and enjoy singing, why not come along to one of our practices on a Thursday evening at 19:15 in Pencoed Bowls Club and see what you think. We practice twice a week in a friendly atmosphere and have the opportunity to enjoy social events, as well as pleasant experiences in concerts and travel. Arts ‘ALLO ‘ALLO (I SHALL SAY THIS ONLY ONCE!)

PORTHCAWL ART SOCIETY AT THE SENEDD Porthcawl Art Society was invited by First Minister Carwyn Jones AM, to exhibit their work at the Senedd as part of the society’s 50th anniversary. There were 42 paintings on display

Members of Phoenix Theatre.com are currently being transported to occupied France for their 21st production - the very funny ‘Allo ‘Allo. Rehearsals are well under way and to say the members of the cast are enjoying themselves is putting it mildly! The stage play is based on the hugely successful British television series and follows the adventures of hapless café owner René. All the old favourites are there including René’s tone deaf wife Edith, Gestapo officer Herr Flick, he of the wooden leg currently suffering from Dutch elm disease, British undercover officer Crabtree disguised as a french policeman complete with outrageous french accent - ’Good Moaning’ and many, many more. After their first production – which took place at the Glamorgan Holiday Home in 2001, Phoenix transferred to the stage of the Grand Pavilion in 2002 and have performed there every year since to great acclaim. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Watch out for Bridgend prog band Last Flight to Pluto, which features top vocalist Alice Freya – their debut album ‘See You At The End’ is having rave reviews and they have already had a full-page article in a top music magazine. Part of the album was recorded at the famous Rockfield Studios so the quality is excellent. Check out their awesome video ‘Heavy Situation’ on YouTube and their website, and order it via various online outlets. Another Bridgend band, heavy rockers ‘Those Damn Crows’ are heading for big things. Their new single, ‘Blink Of An Eye’, is out and their debut CD, ‘Murder And The Motive’, has just been released. Some of the lads were once in a band called Shirker and appeared on my radio show. I’ll chat to them for next month’s rock spot. I’ll also have exclusive news on Rest Bay superstar Jack Taylor, whose band’s single is just out. Congratulations to Rebecca Hurn for her Busker of the Year award, and glad to see drummer Terry Thomas on the mend. A couple of dates for your diaries: October 16th, Hi Tide Rock Night – Prognosis plus more. October 22nd, Pyle Legion – The Cornelly Show with Wayne Davies and gang. Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

BUSY BUT ENJOYABLE TIME APPROACHES

Another small digression from film matters this month, the purpose being to let readers know that a Book Launch has been organised to take place in the Green Room at SUSSED, 5 James Street, Porthcawl, CF36 5BG (Tel: 01656 783962) on Friday 21st October 2016 at 8pm for the paperback edition of my whodunit novel ‘The Tidal Road Mystery’. I will give a short presentation on the background of how the book came to be written – though no clues to the plot, obviously – and this will include a short reading of the first two chapters, and I shall be signing copies for anyone present who wishes to buy the book to find out what happens (at a specially-reduced price)! The evening will also include an ‘Open Mic’ session, so hopefully other local authors will be there, too. There will be an entrance charge of £4. Robert Minhinnick of Sustainable Wales tells me that the creatively-lit and intimate atmosphere of the Green Room is always a great venue for this kind of event, so I look forward to seeing lots of you there. Robert also asked me to mention that it’s a BYOB evening – Bring Your Own Bottle! Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Tel: 07510 934299 Picture: book cover

All Saints Church, Porthcawl on Saturday 8th October is Bridgend Male Choir’s local engagement this month. The 7pm Concert is in support of the Marie Curie Charity. It will be good value as the guests are old friends, Four Lanes Male Voice Choir, Cornwall, which is touring the area, plus the wonderful soprano voice of Maesteg’s Rhian Hughes. Tickets £8 available at the door pre-concert. On the 26th October, the Choir embark on its annual tour, this time to Dublin, where it will support charity fund-raising. As well as a Thursday concert for the Dublin Lions at St. Stephen’s Church (aka Pepper Canister Church), it will join the renowned St Peter’s Male Choir for a Friday joint concert at the Church of the same name in Drogheda, before giving a Saturday lunchtime performance at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. It’s not all work, as the party will be visiting the Guinness Brewery and touring the Wicklow mountains and Bray. One for your diary – November 25th - visit www.ticketsource. co.uk/bridgend-male-choir for details of the Bridgend Male Choir Gala Concert with singer/ entertainer, Mike Doyle and the wonderful Bridgend Rock Choir. ART IN FOCUS Quentin Blake: Inside Stories is a charming exhibition focusing on one of the world’s finest and best-loved illustrators. You will recognise his work from reading the books of Roald Dahl or perhaps David Walliams, as he has created some of the most memorable characters on page. This exhibition explores the origins of Blake’s most iconic creations, from Dahl’s ‘The Twits’ and ‘Danny the Champion of the World’, to his own books and others by wellknown children authors, including Walliams. Discover the world of an illustrator where you will see how Blake developed his ideas, created storyboards and worked alongside the authors to develop characters we all know and love. His discernible style and use of different media, from inks, watercolours and pastels can be seen for the first time in this wonderful exhibition developed by the artist himself and celebrating the opening of House of Illustration, the UK’s centre for the art of illustration. Inside Stories is on until 20th November at The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff and is part of the Roald Dahl 100 Wales celebrations occurring throughout 2016. It’s an exhibition to bring the kids to! For more information email: josephinelewington@yahoo.co.uk Josephine Lewington MA Seaside News | 50

Sport PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 8’S

The 2016/17 season sees the boys progressing to Under 8’s, with it being their last year of Tag Rugby before moving to contact next season. The boys had a very well deserved summer off as a reward for all their hard work last season where they remained undefeated. We started back training in August and have been working on progressing their skills ready for contact. The season started on Sunday the 4th September with a home game against Bridgend Sports. The boys got back into action very quickly, playing some excellent rugby with their defence being the major contributor on the day scoring a combined 15 tries to the oppositions 3. Our next match was away against Bridgend Athletic on the 11th of September, where they also hosted Maesteg Quins, which meant that we had plenty of rugby in a round robin. The weather was glorious with the sun shinning, once again the skills and the passing game where we attacked into space were excellent and was a real confident booster for the boys for the rest of the season. The boys managed to score a combined 22 tries to 7 against the hosts and 11 tries to Maesteg Quins’s 3... the pleasing and important thing here was that all tries were team tries, with each player contributing. The highlight of the day was the presence of Wales Rugby star Rhys Webb, who was happy to have multiple selfies with the boys. The boys have a full season of fixtures ahead and ongoing progress reports will be given. Thanks to Mat at the Seaside News for their continued support. Geraint Evans 07445 209435 Seaside News | 56

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB By the time this goes to print, our summer season will be over, and we can look back at a busy few weeks, although training is still taking place for the Nippers and Juniors on Sunday Afternoons at 12, as well as the obligatory Friday nights at Pyle Pool, where stamina and techniques are refined. We had an excellent turnout for the Round the Bay Swim with 71 competitors taking advantage of calm conditions to record some excellent times. The overall event was won by Ioan Evans, and our congratulations go to him and all finishers. The Nippers and Juniors have been competing in the many Carnivals that take place each summer, and have put in some brilliant effort and performances, all of which will be recognised at the Annual Awards Night at the Hi Tide on Sat 22nd October (see the club website for further details and tickets). However, special mentions must go to Ffion and Katrin Higginson, who took part in the British Championships in Exmouth, and came away with Katrin taking 5th place in the 1KM beach sprint, and Ffion taking 1st place to become British Champion! Well done girls - top work! Phil Protheroe www.porthcawlifeguards.co.uk Photo: Katrin and Ffion Higginson - British Championship Competitors

CHARITY RUN Runners are invited to take part in a charity event at Merthyr Mawr sand dunes on Saturday 8th October. The 10-mile run is being led by Steve Wall – a professional personal trainer, life coach and Ironman trainer. The event will raise funds for Guide Dogs Cymru. It’s a self-supported run in terms of nutrition and fluids, but there will be advice on hand from Steve. The event is a trail run, so appropriate clothing and footwear are advisable. No one will be left behind using the tap back method. Front runners will tap back to the back, so that everyone starts and finishes together. Among those taking part is Lee Gibbons, who is running next year’s London Marathon in aid of Guide Dogs Cymru. He said: “My aunt and her friend are registered blind, so I grew up knowing the important job that guide dogs do. I have very fond memories of playing with the dogs and being fascinated by them when they worked.” Runners are asked to meet in Merthyr Mawr sand dunes car park at 6am with a suggested donation of £10, or pledge via www. justgiving.com/fundraising/Lee-Gibbons2 Picture: Lee Gibbons after completing the Cardiff Half Marathon last year Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Sport TAP IT OUT CC As I’m writing this months report 19 club members are getting ready to ride from Barcelona to Monaco, but more about that in next month’s report. Chris Lewis was part of a charity event in August cycling to the Somme for SSAFA, which is the forces charity, to mark the 100 years anniversary of the battle of the Somme. It was a well organised event and a great opportunity for Chris to meet old friends whilst cycling 300 miles. It’s been a crazy month on the membership front with lots of new faces taking the benefit of the reduced membership fee of £12 for the remainder of the year. So to all those solo cyclists, please come and give TAP IT OUT CC a try. I promise that you won’t be disappointed. The club is all about enjoyment and having fun. So any questions please contact me on nickemorgan@hotmail.co.uk. Stay safe and KEEP ON TAPPING. Nicky Morgan

SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE SURF REPORT This September at Southerndown and Ogmore by Sea we have had a week of waves every day with mostly perfect conditions, ranging from 2ft to 3ft and one 4ft swell. Through the clatter and rattle clank of bulldozer jaws and creepy creaking of tank tracks and beeping of reversing vehicles, you could hear the beaches hissing with waves through those mid September days as the swells from Hurricane Ian and friends expend thier energy across our beaches and reefs. The weather is still warm as many Septembers before us. With such poor weather and surf in the early summer months behind us, I’m hoping for a warm October… with waves. In the various local surf spots I surfed I have watched waves peeling perfectly for a week in emerald green, jade, aqua green blue and river silt brown. David A Batten tuskasurf.co.uk
