Re: Good old BCBC does it again Dear Editor, In response to the anonymous letter printed in the last edition of the Seaside News, it is simply untrue that I have taken a decision to make all over 65s retire from Bridgend County Borough Council. This authority values the contribution that workers with so much experience make to the many vital services we provide. And if you don’t take my word for it then at least accept the facts which speak for themselves: our most recent figures show 51 people over 65 work for Bridgend County Borough Council and two of them are over 70! We also

have over 1,000 employees aged 55 - 64 and as an employer we also offer many flexible working options for people of all ages. I respect that retirement is a personal decision influenced by many factors and as a council we would always openly discuss any request to work beyond current normal retirement age. Re: Newton beach Dear Editor, I would just like to say how much I am in agreement with Tom in the August issue of Seaside News, headlined 'Newton beach'. Unfortunately Tom we live in Britain, where I have found out in my 47 years, that Britain is full of dirty, selfish and ignorant people, who care nothing about the environment, or the cost of cleaning up the mess they deliberately leave behind. I go fishing to Sker, and the same thing happens; I take everything home with me and put it in a bin at home, unfortunately other fishermen leave everything behind,

including plastic bags, broken blades, drinks cartons and tins. Plus while driving I see people flicking their fag ends out of their windows, even though they have an ashtray about 18 inches from their hands. You don't seem to see this kind of mess in other European countries, they have a lot more respect. And as for the dog mess everywhere, it's disgusting. I live in Kenfig Hill, and the streets are awful. I've witnessed people walking past bins and throwing whatever they have on the floor, rather than use the bin; this infuriates me. But Tom, until the disgusting, ignorant and selfish people of Britain change their attitudes, we have to put up with it, unfortunately. » RE, Kenfig Hill

Re: Pen-y-Fai church outside lights Dear Editor, I read with trepidation Mr Marshall's response, and that amid all the smoke screen of his reply – cars and buses etc – the only bad thing he sees about the "industrial" style lights attached to the outside wall of the Grade 2 listed building that is All Saint's Church at

Pen-y-Fai, is that holes with ordinary steel screws could, over time, possibly rust, expand and cause damage…but in his mind unlikely. It is a sad fact that regardless of whether stainless steel or brass or just plain mild steel are used, the very fact that holes have to be drilled into the stonework, will over the years fill with water, which when it freezes will cause fracturing, along with the stress lines generated by the very act of drilling, and all this to attach some very unattractive and unneeded high level lights. Mr Marshall (I am so happy he provided his name) thinks they look OK there, he would put them on his property, and to be fair to him, his property might just suit this kind of light fitting. But living where he does in Pen-y-Fai, I know he doesn't live in a listed building, and have to adhere to the regulations that 'most' people have to about what they can and can't do to the fabric of their buildings. The assumption that I am for some reason looking to spite someone, (I am happy to leave that to God), which I can assure him I am not, other than the mindless bodies that allow the wanton damage of such fine buildings

I am not alone in this ideology either...speak to CADW and see what they have to say about what has been done, and the sad fact that they couldn't do anything to stop it... as Bridgend Planning have the final say. BUT all is not lost, I see recent discussions with the Welsh Labour Party have prompted them to include in their manifesto a Bill that will give much greater protection to Welsh Heritage, allowing CADW the final say on any development on Listed properties. Finally, I don't see my name and address has any bearing on my views on the protection of Welsh heritage, but can assure Mr Marshall, that I am Welsh born, local, had a university education and went on to become an engineer with a major oil company for over 25 years, so I would like to think I speak with some authority…yes they are "industrial style" lights – better suited to a factory. Well I hope I have convinced your readers of my genuine concern about the treatment we are seeing of the church at Pen-y-Fai, and unlike Mr Marshall I have not allowed half of this

Dear Editor, May I give just a few reasons why Christians like myself accept the reality of 'hell' as a factual and not fictitious place. 1. Jesus himself taught it (see Luke 16:23 and Mark 9:42). Using the historically and culturally common images of Hades (Greek) and Gehenna (Aramaic/Hebrew) Jesus spoke often about a place of spiritual and eternal punishment after death. 2. The Bible explains it (see 2 Peter 2:4-10). Here the word used is 'Tartarus' another culturally, historically and commonly understood word describing a spiritual prison for all who are evil. 3. But as he will persist in his effort to improve on them, perhaps in future he could refer to the particular book, chapter and verse he is quoting from, rather than 'lifting' lines out of context. Thanks to Jesus we can be saved from it, and the wonderful invitation still stands 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved'.

Copy of a letter sent to BCBC about Porthcawl regeneration Dear Sirs, My first criticism of this project has to be that Friday’s was not an honest consultation exercise: the documentation – albeit impressive, fulsome and no doubt costly, is too vast for the public to digest; a brief presence (one day per centre) with officials so (admirably?) involved in their own aspect, so attached to their own jargon and on top of the detail that they lose their hearing and sight of the broader picture, amounts to a gesture rather than an exchange of views; and finally, to complete your comments form feels more like dealing with the Revenue – do I need a solicitor or an accountant to guide me through the paragraphs, sections, map? And anyway – the horse has bolted – it’s too late. No wonder the public are disillusioned with politicians – at all levels. In summary this may be regeneration as regards roads and housing – meeting targets and needs – it totally fails to regenerate Porthcawl as the

seaside resort it ought to be, attracting not just tourists and income to the borough, but offering a good day out to everyone within that borough. Tesco may be an asset but is no attraction to either of these categories and the funding they are bringing is to go to projects the Borough must face any way. The attractions of our holiday town will not be enhanced one bit, the old issues of swimming pool, use of Jennings Building and that neglected old caravan park coastline, go back in the cupboard, unrecognised or forgotten by officials and councillors alike. Above all the parking arrangements do not begin to meet summer needs; as far as I can see we barely replicate the town car park numbers which must now be shared with Tesco, while the privateprofiteering overflow of Salt Lake gives way to rewarding the landowners for their neglect and building companies for everything other than car space or leisure attractions. The idea of Park and Ride for these facilities has to be a joke. I remain disappointed that Porthcawl’s potential as a resort remains so low on your list; this is not a Nimby view and should not be seen as political – a successful resort should

St John’s continues th its 90 year celebrations

s you read this edition of the Seaside News we will be beginning a new academic year at St John’s and also continuing our 90th year celebrations. We are welcoming a good number of new pupils to classes across the school and are sure that they will enjoy being part of our community. As we congratulate last year’s GCSE students on their achievements (more detail on this next month) we look forward to another busy year of work across the curriculum. Even our youngest pupils will be taking part in French lessons and all pupils will continue to benefit from our specialist teaching across all subjects, including biology, chemistry and physics and the exciting expansion of the drama department. This will involve both drama clubs and a GCSE class. elcome back everybody to a new term in Newton! We are sure that this term will be as busy as ever – it kicks off with Years 5 and 6 spending a day in Swansea watching Theatr Na n’Og’s new production ‘The Sinking of the Andorra Star’ followed by an afternoon of related activities in Swansea Museum. It’s always a pleasure to see these wonderful plays and we are all looking forward to this treat. This term will see the elections of our new School Council, EcoCommittee and Peace-makers. Good luck to all the applicants - they will do themselves and their parents proud. On a sad note, we said goodbye to Mr Naish at the end of the summer term. Every class performed a special item for him and he leaves us knowing he has a special place in our hearts. Mr Naish’s legacy to Newton (amongst other things) is the ‘Little Things Matter’ Cup. He always insisted that it is the ‘little things’ that are so important, something to which we all subscribe. Cynffig Comprehensive t the moment the school is buzzing with contractors as we spend over £250,000 on school improvements. We are busy re-painting another block which means that in the last three years we have repainted over 60% of the school. Cynffig has one of the largest school sites in the county with excellent facilities for all sports. Many people who know the school will know that it is built around a central courtyard and the most exciting work this summer is our new outside classroom that will be built in the centre. It will provide an outdoor seating area for over 100 students and we hope that it will also be used by the community for summer fetes, outdoor musical events etc. We are also busy putting in even more interactive whiteboards and adding yet more computers. We are also excited that the BBC will report live from the school on GCSE results day when we hope to do as well, if not better, than in 2010. Afon y Felin news ur choir sang with other school choirs at the concert commemorating 40 years of the Kenfig Hill Male Voice Choir. The singing was outstanding. Nicole Perham was our soloist, and we are so proud of them all! The whole school went to Aberavon Beach on their annual trip. They were lucky to have such lovely weather, and everyone enjoyed themselves. We managed to stage sports day on the 15th, despite a few light showers. There were a selection of races, and Ty Afon were the overall winners. We held a tombola and raffle at Cornelly Carnival. We raised £100 for the school and £100 to be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Appeal. Thanks to all who supported us, and special thanks to Nathan, Aaron, Adam, Megan and Cerys for their help. Our Leavers' Presentation was held on the 18th. The children were presented with certificates for their achievements throughout the year and an engraved plaque to remind them of their time at Afon y Felin. This was followed by their prom night. The Burrows nursery s the summer comes to a close, we have been very busy with all our children, including those who attended Holiday Club. They have enjoyed some exciting adventures out. We visited Ogmore Castle and the stepping stones, where the children had the “best picnic ever”. Dinosaur week proved to be very exciting, with a trip to Cardiff museum to see the dinosaur exhibition. We also made a visit to Porthcawl Lifeboat Station, where we had a special guided tour and had a drink and snack in the upstairs crew room. The children who will be leaving us to attend primary school enjoyed a Scooby Doo party in July. The staff and children dressed up in their beach wear and were entertained by 'Funtastic Parties'. We will be welcoming Mel and her puppets back later in the year, for our Christmas celebrations. Following on from transforming our pre-school room, we have now made improvements to the toddler room. Our next project will be a soft play coating to our terrace area. The 350 entries in this summer’s A level examinations produced outstanding results. Over 100 of the record number of entries achieved the prestigious grade A with many producing the new A* rating at A level for the second year running. A staggering 20 students achieved three A level awards at A grade, or better, with almost half this number of students gaining four A levels. As well as this, four students gained four A level awards all at grade A/A*. Overall, almost one third of the total number of A levels sat by our students resulted in grades A or A*. Fight to retain Swansea Coastguard Station

roposals by the Government to close Swansea Coastguard Station are a particularly serious threat to safety in the wider Bristol Channel. In 2010 the number of incidents involving this coastguard station was 2,074 and the coastguard workers union say it is the second busiest station in the UK in terms of inshore search and rescue operations. That compares with 1,006 that were attended by Milford Haven Coastguard Station and 1,137 recorded by Holyhead Station. The specialist knowledge of the coastguards based at this station is key to saving lives, whether it is in directing rescue operations in the treacherous currents of the Loughor estuary, understanding the geography of the many bays and inlets off the Bristol Channel for cliff side rescues or directing operations around a person trapped in the many mud traps on the coastline. I would urge people to let Ministers know the strength of public concern about this closure proposal by completing the consultation form,

Help Alice’s wish come true very 23 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with blood cancer. Their best hope of overcoming the disease is a stem cell transplant. Sadly for 15 year-old Alice Pyne, a transplant is too late for her to overcome Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In the face of this, Alice has published a list of things she would like to do before she dies. One of these is to encourage more people to join the stem cell register. The largest UK register was established by the Anthony Nolan Trust in 1974. Today, it has 400,000 potential donors and hundreds of lives are saved every year. For the 1,600 people currently awaiting a transplant, the chances of a suitable match being found can be greatly improved by the number of people on the register. That is where the plea for men aged 18-30 comes in. Stem cells from this

Cat crisis ritain is in the grip of a cat crisis with thousands of unwanted pets filling all the cat rescue centres while many more are being simply abandoned. I recently visited the Cat Protection League at Bryncethin where I was able to see for myself the tremendous work being done by this national charity. There were dozens of adorable cats there all needing new homes. I was told by staff that they are being hit at the moment, like other animal charities, by the double whammy of more cats being either brought in or abandoned while fewer people are willing to take on the responsibility of a pet. They said that they are being

If people are in a position to take on a pet – and it is not something that should be done frivolously – then I would urge them to step forward. More rights for internet consumers easures agreed by the European Parliament to give consumers protection when purchasing goods via distance selling – including the internet, over the phone and door-to-door salesmen – are welcome. The EU Consumer Rights Directive contains proposals giving people 14 days to change their mind once the item has been delivered, one year for the buyer to return goods if they have not been informed of their rights of

The Directive now needs to be approved by EU ministers, before implementation within two years. Mayoral Message y Consort and I have had a hugely enjoyable month. We welcomed, at the Pavilion, seven conductors from all over the world, who undertook a week’s course which ended at the Côr Bro Ogwr concert in All Saints Church. Patricia O’Neill, her team, including Erica Beynon, deserve great recognition for what they do for Porthcawl. We thoroughly enjoyed the Porthcawl Carnival where we judged floats and walkers. It was hugely successful and well organised by Kerry Marlow and the Buccaneers. We attended 'The King and I' musical performance at the Pavilion by the Bridgend Youth Theatre. Roger Burnell, the cast and all his team deserve great acclaim. The performance was stunning. Cllr David Sage and I officially opened the coastal path on Locks Common. It has long been awaited and is extremely well used. It is the result of a successful partnership between Porthcawl Town Council and BCBC. The Sea Festival was extremely successful. I presented prizes to the winners of the schools' art and poetry competitions. I officially opened ‘Harbour Day’ which was a huge attraction. I presented well earned prizes at the 46th Annual Horticultural Show. It's very fulfilling to be able to represent your community but it's also hard work. On a lighter note, Porthcawl's own Grand Pavilion provided a wonderful backdrop for the Bridgend Youth Theatre's outstanding performance of 'The King and I' recently. Regeneration in Porthcawl he summer season may be winding down, but these last few weeks have been particularly busy for Porthcawl. The new shared footpath and cycle way linking the promenade to Rest Bay across Locks Common has been officially opened to great acclaim. The £216,000 project is providing visitors and residents with a safe, convenient route suitable for people of all ages and abilities. By now, you should have all received a special Porthcawl edition of the County Borough Bulletin. This has been delivered to every home and business in Porthcawl to keep you up to date on the latest regeneration developments, including plans to improve the subway between John Street and Station Hill, the development of a new website dedicated to Porthcawl town centre and proposals for extending the Rest Bay boardwalk. As confirmed in the newsletter, BAM Nuttall Ltd have been selected as the preferred contractor for the forthcoming refurbishment of the harbour area, and it is anticipated that work on the £3m scheme will begin next spring. Neighbourhood policing for Nottage & Rest Bay Your top priorities • Speeding – Fulmar Road You said, we did PCSO Rees carried out a scoping exercise at 12pm on Thursday 14th July. The exercise lasted for 45 minutes and the speed of 100 vehicles was recorded using a handheld speed camera. Six vehicles were driving in excess of 35 mph but the average speed was 28 mph. Drivers of vehicles caught speeding have been issued with warning letters. PCSO Rees did a similar exercise at 6.30pm on Friday July 29th where the speed of seventy vehicles was recorded. Two drivers were issued warning notices for driving in excess of 30 mph but the average speed was 27 mph. Two further vehicles were issued warning tickets for driving in excess of 35 mph after a speeding exercise was carried out on Thursday August 4th. More speeding operations will follow, including late evening periods. It is important to note however, that clearly the above statistics show that the large majority

of drivers comply with speed restrictions in this area.

Porthcawl watch here was a record number of people who attended the last PACT meeting. 41 residents from the area attended and the main discussion of the evening was the new Skate Park at Heol Y Goedwig. After lots of discussion from residents, council and police it was decided that this area would be a PACT priority. The area has also been listed for patrols to be conducted throughout the shifts by all officers to try and assist residents with their concerns. Police would like to ask that when residents call and report incidents involving the Skate Park that they please give their details to enable officers to update them with the actions done by police and partners. Information is treated with confidence to prevent any repercussions. We would be grateful for your help with this. The police support the project and facility, but also ensure quality of life to the residents.

Pyle & Cefn watch ASBO - SUMMER HOLIDAYS Six ASBO referrals have been issued to youths for anti-social behaviour already this summer holiday. A further four ASBO referrals were also given to youths for attempting to steal bikes in the Cefn Cribwr area; all bikes were recovered and returned to their owners. PARKING – GORICON SITE The site has been heavily patrolled to identify any parking offences being committed. One fixed penalty notice has been issued for a vehicle obstructing a junction. No further complaints from the public at this stage, and the situation is being monitored. PARKING – WAUNBANT ROAD Still receiving complaints in relation to the parking of site work vehicles on the road and also obstructing the

junction to South View. In total nine vehicles have been given fixed penalty notices since the PACT meeting held on 14th July. Pyle NPT will continue to patrol the area and target offending vehicles.

Locks Common path officially opened £216,000 new shared footpath and cycleway across Locks Common has been officially opened. Designed to provide a safe, convenient link between the promenade and Rest Bay, the 1.3km path forms an important link in the Wales Coast Path. The new path has been designed so it can be used by visitors of all ages

and abilities. The project is the result of a partnership between the Welsh European Funding Office, European Regional Development Fund, the Welsh Government, Bridgend County Borough Council, Countryside Council for Wales, Porthcawl Town Council and contractors Raymond Brown Construction Ltd. The opening follows the recent announcement of plans to extend an existing 300 metre boardwalk in Rest Bay by a further 800 metres. BCBC Deputy Leader David Sage said: “The new shared footpath and cycleway is another step forward in the regeneration of the town. “Previously, people could only walk between Rest Bay and the promenade area by making their way across the open ground of Lock’s Common. It seems to be an immensely popular publication and it's talked about everywhere I visit. Keep up the good work!" he largest planet in the solar system – Jupiter – is now at a respectable altitude for the first time in quite a few years and will be visible high up in the sky during the autumn months. It will be found in the well-known constellation of Taurus which is distinctive because of its bright red giant star Aldebaran which is often mistaken for Mars. Jupiter is well worth the effort of

observing as it is a very dynamic planet with a wealth of detail (which is always changing), easily discernible even in small telescopes. Because it rotates in less than 10 hours you can observe different features over consecutive nights. Frequently when a feature does come back into view it will have changed or moved slightly. Its four brightest moons are always an attractive sight. As autumn progresses, the brightest planet – Venus – will be seen climbing higher in the west and will outshine every object in the night sky apart from the Moon. Even the smallest telescope will reveal it as a small crescent although no detail can be seen. Believe in Children Power for Month the people eptember is Barnardo’s Believe in Children Month, aiming to increase awareness of the charity, whose aims have changed considerably. They no longer run children’s homes, but they work with the most vulnerable children to turn their lives around. Barnardo’s believe in children, no matter who they are, they will support them; standing up for them, whilst bringing out the best in each and every child. They will never give up on a child. Their work is diverse, across the UK. One service runs parenting classes in Neath Port Talbot and Parc Prison. These classes have proved very successful and having met families that have benefited, I strongly feel that the youngsters that have had the support of Barnardo’s would not be looting on our streets. ustainable Wales launches groundbreaking POWER FOR THE PEOPLE, a community-based solar project and recommends community groups to get involved. The Bridgend-based charity is offering households in the borough free pv (photo voltaic) solar panels for their homes. These will generate an environmentally-friendly, free source of electricity for the homeowners during the day. The scheme will also provide a funding stream to support charities and social enterprises. “We want to help 500 south-facing households with the installation of solar photo voltaics saving an estimated 3000 tonnes of C02 per year, whilst helping low-income households deal with fuel poverty. It’s a Knockout Champions 2011 eam Dynamo Porthcawl led by Angelo Pucella were among a total of twenty-six teams who all had a day of fantastic fun at the Ty Hafan 'It’s a Knockout Challenge' held at the South Wales Police Sports ground in Bridgend. Angelo and his family were referred to Ty Hafan in 2010 because his four year old son has an extremely rare condition known as Rohhad. The family have had several stays at the hospice where they all enjoy a special time together. They also have ongoing support from their family support practitioner based at Ty Hafan. Team Dynamo battled hard during the day but the proud winners to finally take the coveted title of It’s a Knockout Champions 2011 were the Old Pens from Penarth. The event was again kindly sponsored by the Foresters whose Regional Membership Manager, Elizabeth Carrington-Porter commented “Foresters champions the well-being of families through quality life insurance, unique member benefits and inspiring community activities. He’s already forgiven everything you’ll ever do wrong. You just need to accept He loves you. He would never get angry with us or want us to be afraid of Him. Rotarians’ frugal meal he Rotary Club of Porthcawl decided they would like to help the starving people in the Horn of Africa. To have a fundraising event was obvious – but what? The club came up with the idea of having a ‘Frugal Meal’ at one of its lunch meetings. Each member would pay the usual amount for his or her meal and the difference between that and the cost of the ‘Frugal Meal’ provided (soup and a bread roll) would be given to charity helping out in the stricken area. However the management of the Atlantic Hotel did not charge for the meal, which was their way of helping as well, therefore all the money will go to the Horn of Africa appeal. So far the ‘Frugal Meal’ plus a private donation has raised £252.50. If you haven’t given anything towards this cause, perhaps you would like to organise such a meal yourselves with friends, family or neighbours. Monies raised could then be sent directly to your own choice of charity or to the Rotary Club of Porthcawl who would then combine it with the proceeds of their meal and forward the total to the Horn of Africa appeal. Kenfig Hill Cadets help out at local Fun day taff and cadets from 2117 (Kenfig Hill) Squadron ATC, under the supervision of Sgt Judith Lloyd ATC, assisted in Pyle Community Council’s first Fun Day for several years held at Kenfig Hill Rugby Club ground recently. They helped with setting up stalls and litter collection, whilst manning their own recruiting and information stall. Before the Fun Day opened there was a heavy rain storm but this didn’t dampen anybody spirits and the afternoon proved a great success as the sun shone. ascertain quite quickly that this would be a difficult rescue for them to carry out. The tide had fully covered the rocks below forcing the four casualties to climb the cliff. It would have been impossible for the lifeboat crew to evacuate the casualties safely from their precarious position, so the Sea King helicopter from RAF Chivenor in Devon was requested. Luckily for the casualties the helicopter was available and arrived on scene approximately 20 minutes later. Within 10 minutes all four casualties were safely on board the Sea King. Once all were on board the helicopter landed in a nearby field and handed the very grateful four over to awaiting coastguards who then took over their care. The lifeboat stood by under the cliffs while the helicopter performed its winching and was ready to assist if required. Steve Knipe, helmsman at Porthcawl Lifeboat Station says: "At first we thought we were going to assist four people cut off at the bottom of the cliff; it wasn’t until we got closer that we realised the four had climbed half way up the very steep cliff, they were very lucky indeed as there are very few options available to us in these sorts of situations." Earlier in the day the RNLI lifeboat had assisted a jet ski with two on board who had broken down in Trecco Bay, Porthcawl. A red flare had been fired which was spotted from the lifeboat station. Linda and her family managed to complete the 5km course in just 52 minutes whereas Verity did it in 42 minutes – after intensive pre-race training it has to be said! As a result of their wonderful efforts, their little team managed to raise over £1,500, from which, a staggering £356 was donated by the wonderfully generous staff and guests at the Rest - and for this we would like to give them all our heartfelt undying thanks – you are all wonderful people! When the lifeboat arrived on scene, the casualties had climbed half way up the cliff making the rescue impossible so the assistance of a helicopter was requested. Swansea Coastguard had paged the Porthcawl RNLI around 6.30pm Sunday evening and had asked them to investigate this incident at Southerndown. The lifeboat made good speed in rough seas and could

Trecco Bay Holiday Park is almost a small town with its shops and leisure facilities and - a church. The church has been there since the late Sir Leslie Joseph began the holiday site. It is built in the shape of a tent because tents were the original camp site and was dedicated to St. Mary by the then Bishop of Llandaff; the Church in Wales assumed responsibility for its use and the worship there. During August, which is the busiest holiday period, services were held every Sunday. ‘Family Fun’ afternoons with games, handicrafts, puzzles, refreshments etc for all the family and an ‘8 til late’ evening drop-in during the week were held with assistance from the Church Army. There is a large resident population at Trecco Bay Holiday Park who require the same pastoral care as any other community. It is intended, therefore, that a similar programme will run through the

Time Team at Kenfig enfig Nature Reserve had a great week Time Team at in August with Kenfig Nature Reserve the Time Team production unit filming the last programme of the 2011 series. The dig near Kenfig Castle was very successful with some impressive discoveries about the village that was buried by windblown sand several hundred years ago. Some of the team rated the Kenfig dig as in the top ten for the whole 19 year series! The programme is due to be aired in the first half of 2012. » D Carrington

Kenfig and the Vikings n 793 AD the Vikings raided the monastery of Lindisfarne in Northumbria. This attack alerted Britain to a new threat and although it has become popular to replace the idea of invasion with one of a native culture slowly absorbing the influence of a foreign culture, the chronicles of the time suggest that when the Vikings first arrived they did so with hostile intent. The Gwentian chronicle of Caradoc of Llancarvan states that in 893 A.D. the Vikings burnt and raided Llantwit Major, Llancarvan and Kenfig. The legitimacy of such chronicles is always in dispute; however, the mention of Kenfig by name does imply the existence of a settlement at this time. It has been suggested that Kenfig was named by the Vikings and that the word derives from

the Danish language and means ‘the bend in the River Ken’. Certainly, nearby Sker appears to be a corruption of sjer, the Danish for reefs or rocks. Other local names of possible Scandinavian origin include Tusker, Nash, Lundy, Skomer and Skokholm. Equally, it is possible that Kenfig derives from the Welsh, Cen-y-ffig, meaning the head of the swamp, which seems to tie in neatly with the pool. A further idea is that Kenfig is named after a lord, Cynffig, who ruled the region before the Normans arrived in the 11th century. On 2nd October at 2pm a guided walk entitled Bedford’s Realm will trace the history of the ironmaster, John Bedford. On Wednesday 5th October [3pm] John Mason will lead a walk along the trails around Kenfig once trod by Ben Evans who lived on the dunes for nearly a quarter of a century. This will be followed by entertainment at the Prince based upon Ben, the maid of Sker and other local tales. here circumstances permit, the Inheritance Tax (IHT) efficiency of a will can be maximised by leaving assets that qualify for 100% Business Property Relief (BPR) directly to your children. If it is not desirable to leave such assets directly, an alternative approach would be to leave the business assets in a trust, as a chargeable transfer, where your children are the beneficiaries. As the assets have a zero value for IHT purposes, there will be no IHT charge on the transfer into the trust. If the intention is to leave business assets to the surviving spouse, and finances permit, a further IHT strategy could be considered. This involves leaving the business assets to your children, IHT exempt, and for the spouse to purchase these assets subsequently. The children would then have the cash value of the business without suffering any IHT loss. The business assets would re-qualify for BPR after the spouse had owned them

for a further two year period. These assets could then be left to the children, again, in the surviving spouse’s will. Your children could therefore inherit an unlimited value of business assets twice, and free from IHT on both occasions. Such planning obviously relies on the spouse having sufficient resources to fund the purchase. A variation on this theme would be to leave the business assets to a discretionary will trust and for the surviving spouse to purchase them, at arm’s length from the trustees. Specialist legal advice should always be sought before proceeding with such an arrangement, as there are certain pitfalls that could undermine its IHT effectiveness. Noticeable upturn in first time buyer market eter Alan estate agents in Porthcawl were today pleased to report a positive trend in the first time buyer end of the market since the half year mark, during July and early August they report that demand for properties below the stamp duty threshold of £125,000 has seen a marked increase. The branch report that since the half year they have been agreeing sales for clients within 91% of their asking price on average but their results have shown that properties below the threshold have been achieving in excess of 95% of their asking prices underpinning their belief that healthy

demand in this price bracket is helping to bolster property prices. The agency which has branches across South Wales was delighted to see some positive trends in this sector of the market following a relatively flat market trend that had existed since the downturn back in 2008. Portabello mushroom

Filled with apple and Caerphilly cheese rarebit, served with a crunchy pear and celeriac salad

(Serves 4 as a starter or 2 as a main) INGREDIENTS • Portabello mushrooms x 4 • Butter Rarebit: • Caerphilly cheese 6oz • 1 egg • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard • 100 ml beer (real ale) • Splash of Worcestershire sauce Salad: • 1 small celeriac • 2 pears (conference) • 1 small bunch of watercress • Salt & pepper

Attack of the cauliflower sheep

RECIPE • To make the rarebit grate the Caerphilly cheese, season and add the Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, egg and a small amount of beer until you get a spooning consistency (not too runny). • Spoon the mixture on top of the mushrooms and put back into the oven and cook for a further 5-10 minutes until golden brown. • To make the celeriac salad, grate the celeriac and pear and mix together and add some watercress leaves and lightly season. • Put all of the vinaigrette ingredients into a bowl and mix together. • Add a little of the vinaigrette to the celeriac and pear salad and lightly toss together. Arrange neatly on a plate. Feastival, the Wales Alternative Food Festival organised by Bridgend County Borough Council, was held for the first time last year and was an outstanding success attracting more than 35,000 people to the town. One of Feastival 2010’s main attractions was a 10 foot high ‘cauliflower sheep’ created to highlight food recycling and filmed using time-lapse photography especially for release on YouTube. And even though the ambitious food art project eventually collapsed, the sheep has become an internet hit and attracted the interest of US TV producers and has been featured on their version of ‘You’ve Been Framed’. Councillor David Sage, Deputy Leader for Bridgend County Borough Council, said: “The cauliflower sheep was probably one of the most unusual things ever seen at a Food Festival in the UK and it certainly put Bridgend on the map. “We’re already wondering who will be the star of this year’s Feastival. i again. I was going to tell you how good Iron Maiden were on their recent tour but my invite never came. I wonder if it's anything to do with turning down a support spot many years ago when they were unknown? Instead I headlined my own UK tour and even had a young band 17 on tow. Some months later they became The Alarm, cracked America, and went on to sell 8 million records. You never know what's around the corner. As much as I love live music, I fear Porthcawl is in overkill. Six venues are having bands, all on Friday, and Sunday is even worse. Come the dark wet nights, some pubs are bound to suffer. I hope landlords will get together and stagger their nights so they all have a fair bite of the cherry. Why not a Saturday ban night? Porthcawl Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society AODS ended their current season with an appearance at Porthcawl Carnival. e had a lovely talk last month from Dan the Park Ranger at Bryngarw Park all about ways to encourage butterflies, bees and other wildlife into your garden, so thank you Dan we all enjoyed it very much and learnt lots of new things. Britain has about 16 million back gardens all containing more than 4,000 invertebrates and roughly 250 plants and if you include soil micro-organisms about 3.5 million species (I think most of mine are slugs!). I have learnt that eggshells are a good natural fertilizer – take 4 or five broken shells, put into about 2 pints of water and leave stand for 24 hours. The water is then marvellous for your houseplants! I’ve been advised that a good tip when transplanting trees and shrubs is always to choose a month without an ‘r’ in so never in May, June, July of August. We have a social evening at Cefn Green Hall on September 26th when we have a quiz, bring your own drinks and nibbles and join the fun all are welcome and we love to see new faces, also next coffee morning on Saturday 3rd, 10-12am.

Porthcawl Town Carnival reshstart got the show on the road with the Carnival of Life in Porthcawl Primary School and then processing at the Porthcawl Town Carnival the week later. Even though the route takes nearly two hours the children, babes in prams and parents danced and shook their shakers all the way in true carnival style. All came away elated from the experience. Although the floats seem to be on the decline the walkers are on the increase. Siobhan Grice is keen to continue developing this part of the carnival and will be looking at running workshops throughout the year. She will be gathering the troupes together and looking at themes, costumes, dance and drumming. The Llanelli waterside 10k saw the quartet of Will Edwards, Anthony Powell, Julian Maine and Young Tom Davis take the senior men's first team prize, Tom also came in a very creditable 5th place overall. Next up was the Ammanford 10k which proved to be the most successful day's racing in the clubs short history. Not only did it produce the overall race winner in Geraint Lewis (36.05 min), who is in the form of his life, but there were also wins for Nicola Thomas (1st Female V35), Anthony Powell (1st Male V40) and Gabriella Maine (3rd Female). Next up at the Tenby 10k the ever dependable Anthony Powell came home in 1st place M40 and Gabriella Maine was 3rd senior lady (4th lady overall). Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club: captains optimistic about future hen the Ryder Cup was held in 2010 in Celtic Manor, Newport, it was a boost to the local economy and put Wales as a high profile landmark on the golfing world map. P&K Golf Club greatly enjoyed welcoming the overseas visitors, particularly those from the rival continent of USA. Most visitors spoke kind words on the quality and layout of the course and the intimate atmosphere of the clubhouse and the club was delighted to play a role in this great event. Porthcawl visit by Tai Chi Master

Mr Martin is the Head of the Classical Sun Style of Tai Chi in the UK. He was trained by Sun Jian Yun, the daughter of the styles founder Sun Lu Tang, when he worked in China. Mr David Martin was formally inducted as one of Sun Jian Yun’s "Bai Shi" students at Sun Lu Tang’s tomb near Baoding in 1997. This was a great honour for a non-Chinese student and he is now the main “lineage holder” of Classical Sun Style in the UK. Among other activities David gave an impressive demonstration of the 62 movements Sun Style Tai Chi sword, using a live blade, and Su Ying gave a stunning performance of how the Classical Sun Style Tai Chi 97 movement routine should be performed. Porthcawl Junior Rugby orthcawl RFC Mini & Juniors recently said thank you to Mini & Junior section Chairman Mr Gareth (Higgins) Williams. After a number of years involved in operation of the Rugby Club Junior section, Gareth has stepped down from his present role as Chairman. Gareth has been involved in Club M&J Section in an official capacity undertaking a number of roles including a junior player coach, before taking on the roles of fixture Secretary and Chairman for the last four years. The Brackla Harriers have been off on another team race this time to beautiful Tenby for the 10K run. The race this year attracted record numbers and our own John Morgan was the first Harrier to finish with an exceptional 38.59 minutes and coming in 7th place in his age category. The Harriers also had two new members at the race, Richard Pearson and Neil Ekman running their first club race they finished in a very respectable time of just over 55 minutes. The Harriers celebrated their success with a carvery meal before the coach home. Anyone interested in joining the Harriers is welcome along to our club for the training sessions for a few weeks before having to formally join the club. The Brackla Harriers meets at the Tennis Club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and the runners leave at 7pm. Tuesdays is an effort session with either hill repeats or multiple laps, with the Thursday run being a tempo run over varying distances dependent on the ability of the runner, full details can be viewed on the Brackla Harriers website www. bracklaharriers.co.uk

Cefn Cribwr Kyokushin Karate

Cefn Cribwr Dojo hen they lost their training premises Bridgend Dojo looked around for a new location, Cefn Cribwr was an ideal site. The first session opened with one new junior and the few students who had made the move from Bridgend. This soon changed and in June 18 juniors and 2 seniors attended Grading at Aberkenfig with a 100% pass rate. We now hold classes of 30 plus and have hosted a Welsh Squad training session, which many of our juniors attended. We have a well attended under 12s section and also a number of mums and Dads fitness training on a Monday and Thursday. Many girls attend the club and Councillor Huw Davies is “pleased to see them attending as there is very little sport in the village apart from rugby and football which doesn’t engage them so well as karate”. The local school Headmaster Mr Howells was also “very impressed that no-one had demonstrated their new found skills in the playground”. The club is now a well established part of the village community and we look forward to continuing to attract new students and introduce them to the Kyokushin ethic. » Mandy Baldwin

Tips for the beginner surfer, continued n last month's article we covered the best beaches to learn to surf, along with surf safety and how to do the “POP”. This week paddling and catching waves. One of the surfing tips we can give you is to make sure your board is properly waxed before you head into the ocean. This will provide good traction and solid footing when you are trying to stand up on a wave. Also, make sure your leash is securely fastened to the leash plug on your board. This will prevent your board from getting away from you, and possibly hitting others. Now, strap on your leash to which ever is your back foot (your back foot will typically be the same as your dominant hand). Good surf technique begins before you even get wet. Start by watching the ocean. Get a good idea of where the waves are cresting up and then breaking. Watch the whitewater (foam ball) roll through, and get an idea of how far out you need to paddle. With your board in hand, start walking into the water. Walk out as far as possible: typically this will be stomach – deep. Any further and it gets very hard to keep your footing and still hold on to your board. Next issue - 'Catching waves'.

UK Professional Surfing Festival takes Bridgend by storm ridgend has scooped the chance to host the UK Pro Surfing Championships on October 8–9th. The Surf Championships will form part of the Porthcawl Splash UP Festival that will bring an adrenalin packed weekend of extreme sports to Rest Bay and 'street dancing' to Porthcawl high street. The event will see the UK’s top surfers competing for the UK title and in addition some of the UK's top skateboard and BMX professionals will be performing at our purpose built skate park located at Rest Bay car park The town centre at Porthcawl will come alive on Sat 8th October with a series of Street Dance performances with some of the best street dance acts performing throughout the day Over 100 of the UK’s best surfers will descend on Rest Bay for the actionpacked weekend, to compete for the UK Professional Surfing title. In addition our onsite skate park will run a series of daily workshops hosted by a number professional skateboard and BMX riders. This will offer a series of free coaching workshops to any young people that show up on the day and equipment will be provided.
