Annual Buckaneers Carnival - the future…? Dear Editor, We have just completed another successful carnival in raising funds for local causes and community groups. The objective of the Buckaneers is to involve the community in local fundraising activities at the same time as providing entertainment and enjoyment for those who wish to participate. Over the years we have raised thousands of pounds which has assisted many local groups and organisations. This event is in jeopardy and unlikely to continue next year. We have over the years initiated systems that would assist in easing the workload.

We encouraged local groups to assist us on our fundraising activities and to assist on carnival day. This had proved successful, but, over the last two years the groups have failed to encourage their members to participate. The lack of commitment to volunteer to assist will result in this being the last year of the carnival. We are asking members of the community, are you able to assist? Some of the work on carnival day is physically demanding. If you are able to assist please attend the carnival meeting at 8pm on Thursday 19th September 2013 at the Hi Tide Inn, Porthcawl. At this meeting the future of the Buckaneers Carnival will be decided. Kerry MArLOW

Thank you Dear Editor, Can I take the opportunity through your pages to thank the people of Bridgend County Borough and The Co-operative for the fantastic fundraising they have been doing on behalf of carers? Recently, staff, customers and members of The Co-operative were busy fundraising, demonstrating their support for those people in our community who care, unpaid, round the clock, 24/7, 365 days of the year. Carers Trust is The Co-operative charity of the year for 2013. By working together we can make life-changing differences to the lives of thousands of 14-25 year-olds in our communities – young people who have unpaid practical and emotional caring responsibilities for a family member or friend who cannot cope without their support. The generosity of your readers will help us make a real

difference to the lives of these young adult carers, who are often isolated and unsupported in caring for their loved ones. HeLen PiTT

Macmillan cancer support Dear Editor, Recently, a Tea Party was held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. I would like to thank friends and neighbours who made the day such a success. It was perfect in every way, thank you Mr Weatherman! Also, thank you to the nine friends who couldn’t attend on that day, but nevertheless made generous donations. A special thanks to Liz who helped out on the day. This important charity needs all the support we can give them. The grand total at the end of the day was £350. re: Welcome back to Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I am appalled to see this ‘Thomkinson’ is writing in again, he is clearly some sort of cretin. All this nonsense about kids drinking on the prom and smoking is not only irresponsible but downright dangerous, much better he ‘leaves those kids alone’ to pursue the safer pastime on the computer and mobile phone. My kids spend most of their time either lying in bed, watching TV or playing games on the computer, so I know that they are safe! Also this Thomkinson moron knows nothing of Porthcawl as we all know there has never been a railway station in Porthcawl and there is no need for

a swimming pool as we have the sea! Anyway, I want to bring a deeply disturbing point to light. I noticed an advert in the paper last week for an AA meeting in one of Porthcawl’s well-known establishments (you know who you are!) but when I turned up, to my horror, each person present stood up and openly admitted to being an alcoholic. I’m not having these boastful drunkards repairing my car! I can only hope the RAC have more responsible employees and would ask Porthcawl Town Council to vet these meetings prior to letting them take place in this town. Love the magazine. JArry LLOyD evAns

Fostering service receives good inspection

Bridgend County Borough Council’s fostering service has once again achieved a glowing inspection from the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW). The report praised Bridgend Foster Care for their child-centred approach, the processes and support they offer, high standards of staffing and leadership, and for the quality of foster carers. The Bridgend Fostering Service was also commended for having made several improvements over the past year. Councillor Huw David, Cabinet Member for Children and Young

People, said: “I am delighted that the fostering service received a good inspection. It signifies the council’s commitment to children’s services. “The Bridgend Fostering Service continues to achieve success and has made a significant number of improvements in the last year alone. This is testament to the professionalism of our team and foster carers who continually work hard and show enormous dedication so we can help more children in need of loving families. “Finding permanent, loving homes for vulnerable lookedafter children remains a top priority for Bridgend County Borough Council. Fostering is a hugely rewarding experience and I would encourage anyone who is interested in fostering to contact the team.” For more information about becoming a foster carer, call 01656 642674 or visit www. bridgend.gov.uk/fostering Jenny OWen BCBC

Our sports days went particularly well and we were blessed with gorgeous weather. Year 6 had a lovely end to the term. They attended a dance organised by the parents and a pupil committee at the Grand Pavilion and they also performed a fantastic leavers’ concert. At the leavers’ assembly, on the last day of term, there was hardly a dry eye in the house. We also said goodbye to Mr Ashton who has

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE Pencoed Comprehensive A LEVEL RESULTS Hard work, improvement and success, three short words that accurately summarises Porthcawl Comprehensive students’ AS and A2 performances for 2012-13. Students at AS and A2 have had their endeavour rewarded with excellent results. There is a large debt of gratitude for teachers who have worked so hard once again this year and for parents who have supported their sons and daughters. Excellent results truly reflect the effective partnership between a school, its learners and the home. At A2 the pass rate at A* to E was 98.6% while the A* to C pass rate was an impressive 81.84%. Almost 33% of the whole entry percentage was at the A*/A grade. A very impressive 20 students achieved 3A grades or better at A2 level, with some achieving four ‘A’ levels. The AS results were equally as impressive - 90% of the entry was A* to E and 64% achieved the A* to C grade. At AS a very impressive 19% of the entry achieved the A grade. Headteacher Mr Slade commented that this excellent series of results will ensure Porthcawl students will secure places at some of the best universities in the country. Mr Slade continued to congratulate staff and students who were praised for their hard work and steadfast dedication. Mr Slade concluded that the results were especially impressive given the large size of the entry; over 300 papers were sat at A-level. The Departments of Drama, English, Biology, History, French, Welsh and Performing Arts performed particularly well. Other notable performances came from Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Human Biology, Religious Studies, Economics, Textiles and Welsh Baccalaureate. A special mention must go to Joseph Strong, who achieved a most remarkable 4A*.

Pencoed Comprehensive School students are celebrating a superb set of ‘A’ Level results – the best results the school has ever achieved. Nearly 4/10 (38%) of grades awarded were at A*/A or equivalent. Over 8/10 (83%) of grades awarded were above C grade. The overall pass rate was (100%) – no fail grades were recorded at all! There were many superb individual sets of results and the great majority of students have been successful in gaining places at University. Hamish Sproul gained A* in Mathematics, A grades in Phys-

Happy New Year! No, I haven’t misread my calendar – it’s that time of year when our schools welcome children and young people into the new academic year. Following some fantastic exam results in August, I’m sure everyone’s been raring to get back to school and have an equally successful year. Like New Year, going back to school is a great time to commit to a healthier and active new lifestyle. Last month, I challenged children and young people to try a new activity when they return to school, but there are many

reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning I recently wrote to Housing Minister suggesting that the Housing Bill, which is due later this year makes the installation of carbon monoxide detectors mandatory when any appliance that might produce the gas is installed in existing homes. Carbon monoxide poisoning causes 50 deaths, 200 serious injuries and 4,000 minor injuries a year, costing the health service in England and Wales £178 million annually in medical and care costs, not to mention the degree of suffering and grief caused to victims and the families of those who die. Any new solid fuel appliance must come with a carbon monoxide detector but that does

save Porthcawl Fire station

The fight is on to save Porthcawl Fire Station – and it is a fight that has my full support. I joined firefighters at a campaigning session in John Street recently. Hundreds of people signed the petition opposing closure. While I understand that all public services have to make every penny count, I do not believe that closing Porthcawl and Kenfig Hill stations and replacing them with a new station at South Cornelly is right. Although it may save the £230,000 a year running costs of one of the stations, it will also halve the number of fire appliances and trained crews

not apply to other fuel types at present. A change in the regulations to require that the mandatory installation of a detector with all at-risk appliances, and a programme of installing hard-wire detectors in all social housing in Wales could make a big difference and save lives. Here in Wales, we have smoke detectors fitted as standard in many of our houses, and a law requiring sprinklers in new build accommodation. A further statutory provision requiring much cheaper carbon monoxide detectors to be fitted would seem a logical next step towards ensuring improved safety in homes throughout Wales. available and is too heavy a price to pay. And we should remember that Porthcawl is not an ordinary small town. Its population doubles in the holiday season with visitors filling the caravan parks, hotels and guest houses. All of these are added risk factors - plus the ageing population and the large number of residential homes for the elderly. So I say no to this plan and I hope everyone else will also make their views known loud and clear. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service must be left in no doubt about what the people of both Porthcawl and Kenfig Hill think of this plan. suZy DAvies

Traffic laws and guidance

Traffic laws and guidance are changing with a greater focus on safety. Towing a horsebox, a boat or a touring caravan brings the risks of road incidents increases dramatically – there were 1,408 towing accidents in the UK between April and June alone. Drivers must check the weight of the towed vehicle (no more than 85% of the weight of the car), check the rear lights, brakes and indicators and stop periodically during a journey to ensure connections are tight.

A living wage for council workers

Not pictured: a public sector worker

A campaign has recently been started by Plaid Cymru to induce Bridgend County Borough Council to introduce a living wage for its employees. While it has become fashionable to knock public sector workers in recent times – the UK Government in particular has great difficulty in seeing their value – this view ignores two factors: that the majority of public sector workers are not mandarins with so-called goldplated pensions; and that the relationship between the public and private sector is symbiotic. Employers need healthy, well educated staff just as hospitals

Tyre pressure must also be checked, as a slow puncture in the towed vehicle cannot be felt. New fixed penalty notices of £100 for careless driving offences such as middle lane hogging and tailgating have also been introduced. We have all been annoyed by behaviour covered by the new offences which include overtaking on the inside, driving inappropriately close to another vehicle, inadvertently driving through a red light, emerging from a side road into the path of another vehicle, or being distracted by tuning the car radio or lighting a cigarette. Police will now be watching for bad behaviour which can lead to accidents and have the power to award on-the-spot fines. MADeLeine MOOn MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com

and schools require taxpayers’ money. A petition has been started on change.org, along with a Facebook page and there is already growing support for the campaign. Unfortunately, the Labour-run council has refused to consider the change, blaming the UK Government for its settlement, even though larger Welsh authorities like Caerphilly and Swansea have introduced a living wage. We often hear that council executives’ pay needs to be high to attract the right candidate. Does the same not apply to teachers, social workers and the plethora of other local government roles? And what message is Bridgend County Borough Council sending to its people if it is not prepared to invest in this way for the future? BeTHAn JenKins

Leader’s life

Porthcawl always looks great in the sunshine, and we’ve certainly had plenty of that over the summer months with visitors flocking into the town. We’ve had a few hiccups along the way, such as a brief incident with caravans parking illegally at Rest Bay. But we always take such issues very seriously and worked closely alongside South Wales Police to ensure that they were moved as quickly as possible. It’s also been interesting to see how people have adapted

to the reintroduction of civil parking enforcement across Bridgend County Borough. Since April, a team of 12 parking officers have been on patrol, including at weekends and on bank holidays, to tackle illegal car parking. With no targets to meet or clamping release fees, the service remains firmly focused on increasing community safety and easing the parking misery that has been experienced by so many residents. Wanted: Harbour Master for the new Porthcawl Marina

It’s been great to see families enjoying the Sunday ‘fun in the sun’ events over the summer season. Suggested by traders as a good way of promoting the town, the council has been happy to support them in setting up live music, stalls, arts, crafts and children’s activities all along John Street. These events have contributed to the vibrancy of the town centre by encouraging more weekend visitors to come and see what Porthcawl has to offer. I hope further businesses will

consider opening on Sundays as a result – it has the potential to prosper and grow into something that could really benefit the town. Elsewhere, the all-new Porthcawl Marina will soon be opening and we are in the process of appointing a harbour master. This important role requires extensive knowledge of the marine industry, and we are looking for someone who can manage and operate a safe, efficient marina as well as work with us as we look at ways in which we can develop the marina and its facilities further for the benefit of Porthcawl. We’ll be issuing further details on the opening of Porthcawl Marina soon, so keep an eye on Seaside News and local media. COunCiLLOr DAviD sAge

We have managed to secure £15,000 funding to pay consultants to carry out a feasibility study to examine the viability of the proposal. Over the next 12 weeks Wider Impact Consultancy will examine our plans thoroughly, consult widely with local residents and organisations and statutory authorities. They will also look carefully to see how these plans fit with Welsh Government policies and guidance. This will provide third party expert opinion and examination of our plans in particular investigating financial viability. We now need to secure approximately £10,000

to pay for Bridgend County Borough Council’s planning fees and would love to speak to anyone who feels they can assist with our search on this. On Saturday 13th August we held a marquee on the promenade as part of the Sea Festival. This was jointly sponsored by the Porthcawl Sea Cadets and the Welsh Surfing Federation. It was an extremely busy day in that a number of new young people wanted to find out more about joining the Sea Cadets and we also displayed the model and drawings of the Harbour Maritime Centre. We had hundreds of people, local residents and visitors who took the opportunity to find out more about the plans, share their aspirations and ideas and many people asked what they could do to help. Our sincere thanks to everybody who spoke with us. We also made a formal presentation to a packed meeting of Porthcawl Rotary Club. Members probed a number of areas in a question and answer session. Work is now taking place on organising a website. Further information: stuartbentleysurf@hotmail.co.uk sTuArT BenTLey

Local leaders take tea with Marie Curie fundraisers The Blooming Great Tea Party held in Trinity Church Hall, Porthcawl was delighted to greet First Minister Carwyn Jones and Porthcawl Mayor Michael Clarke and Norah his wife to their tea party. There were loads of delicious cakes, a raffle and various competitions.

The group raised £300 which will help care for the terminally ill in the area. The fundraising group work hard to raise the profile of Marie Curie in Bridgend and Porthcawl but are limited by the group’s small numbers. If anyone would like to help or join please contact 01792 461435 for more details. Another very successful tea party in aid of Marie Curie was held by the parish of Nolton and Coity Churches. Again lovely cakes dominated the afternoon and the treasurer Dave Sullivan presented a cheque for £150 to Helen Thomas, representing the group. HeLen THOMAs

Charity head shave Kath Underhill nee Lang, an employee at RMBI Albert Edward, took up the brave challenge of shaving her head for charity. Kath did this to support two causes close to her own heart, cancer research and autism awareness. After the loss of her grandparents and her mum’s ongoing four year battle with cancer she felt now would be a good time to help cancer research in the hope one day others will not have to go through the same plight.

All the fun of the fair

An autumn challenge Planets are often the brightest objects in the sky after the Sun and the Moon. Venus, Jupiter and Mars can easily outshine any star. Perhaps the easiest method to distinguish a planet from a star is to see if it twinkles or shines with a steady light. If it doesn’t twinkle then it’s almost certainly a planet! Jupiter, the largest planet, will dominate the autumn and winter sky, rising at midnight in September then progressively earlier as the months go by. It can be seen in the constellation of Gemini which arcs high over the night sky.

However, if you have a pair of binoculars, you might try finding the distant planet Uranus which was discovered by William Herschel in 1781. Locate the great square of Pegasus in the north-eastern sky and draw a line down from the star at the top-left (Alpharatz) to the star at the bottom-left of this square (Algenib). Next extend this line for the same amount down towards the southern horizon, then turn it 90 degrees left and draw a line for half the same distance towards the east; slightly above this position sits the greenish planet Uranus. Sited on an old ballast tip, Coney Beach Amusement Park developed shortly after World War One. The genesis of the fairground centred on two surplus World War One aircraft hangers. A figure-of-eight was added in 1920 and this was followed by a helter-skelter and a water chute. Over the years bumper cars, slot machines and numerous ‘edge of the seat’ rides were also added, guaranteeing entertainment

Kath’s son is currently being diagnosed with autism and she wanted to highlight and help in any way that she could. She worked hard to raise sponsorship and the last total was over £900 collected. This is an amazing effort and we were so touched here at Albert Edward that she let us witness this great feat. RMBI Albert Edward and a high decibel level from ‘over-excited’ adults and children. With the popularity of the fairground increasing, bathing huts were placed on the beach to accommodate locals and holidaymakers, for it was considered immodest to undress in public. The long line of bathing huts were mounted on wheels, and horses drew them up and down the beach according to the state of the tide. The ponies and donkeys became a major attraction. However, in the 1920s many of the adults who found their way to the beach were keen to take to the water. This moved the authorities to place a sign on the beach instructing the ladies to swim on the left and the gentlemen to swim on the right, although if it was ‘really necessary’ mixed bathing was allowed in the centre. Bridgend Rotary Club presidents’ handover A black tie dinner was held in honour of the outgoing President Mike Lewis. The evening was an opportunity to raise significant funds for young Cellan Hall, our nominated disabled wheelchair table tennis prospect for the Rio Olympics. The Presidents with club council have decided to support Cellan in raising sufficient fund to buy a sports wheelchair in order that he might have a better chance of achieving a medal at the games. President Allan has decided to adopt the Rotary International

young birds lack this plumage. Look out for their white wing crescents in flight. Woodpigeons are often seen in large flocks on farmers’ fields where they cause economic damage to crops such as rapeseed. Through Christian eyes THE GOODNESS OF GOD AND THE THREE LOST THINGS Bible scholars say that three things were lost when Adam broke relationship with God. They are: something of God’s presence; the image of God in us was affected; and our view of God was distorted. Let us look at the third one. One of the things we need to understand is that when Adam broke relationship, God didn’t change. We know that our relationship with God changed, but God himself didn’t change. In Malachi 3 v 6, God says ‘I do not change’. This is very important for us to understand

Life with the Porthcawl Lions The other Sunday afternoon new president, Lion Laurence and his wife Julie hosted the annual President’s party for all members and their partners. Although the glorious weather chose that day to break and the boules competition had to be abandoned everyone had a great time and made short work of the delicious tea. Many thanks to Julie and Laurence for a delightful afternoon. The Bob Cooke games were very successful and enjoyed by all who went, especially as they came back with one more medal than last year; participants are already looking forward to next year’s event.

because most people think that God is a tyrant or someone quick tempered, when actually he is just the opposite. The Bible says that we need to restore our relationship with him but it is a wonderfully loving and kind God we are being restored to. Just like Adam did when he hid from God after he disobeyed him – we hide from him and try to stay clear of him. No-one wants to hang out with someone that makes them feel bad all the time. Allow me to encourage you today that God is a kind, loving, merciful, and compassionate God. He is not the sort of God that we sometimes think he is. He cares about you. neiL HArvey

Hopefully the car boot sales at The Rest will continue into September and there may be one or two more book sales in John Street. Porthcawl Lions will also be helping at the Elvis festival fun run. All Lions clubs are run solely by volunteers and all the money raised, after basic costs, goes to charity. This month Porthcawl Lions was able to make a donation to Ty Cornel for a new television, the first new one they have ever had. Members also agreed to make regular quarterly donations to the food bank as well as donations to LCI’s Libra cancer scheme and the UN female education fund, satisfying for all club members. Porthcawl Wi

Our WI will be celebrating its 1st anniversary in November, when it was first formed. The year seems to have gone by quickly and we seem to be going from strength to strength. The sense of camaraderie within this WI is excellent.

Rehearsals for GFWI massed choir carol concert in December will soon be under way, which will be a very exciting time for any member taking part in our WI and other local WIs also. We are now looking forward to our cream tea event which has a 20’s theme to it, and I am sure some of the costumes will be amazing. Also we have selected a team for the federation quiz which will take place at the Hi-Tide on 19th September at 7.30pm. We wish our ladies well and it should be an interesting evening. We have all this and a lot more to look forward to in the forthcoming year. Come and join us and make new friends and perhaps bring a little extra to our WI. You will be assured of a warm welcome. We meet every 4th Thursday of the month at All Saints Church hall. For more information ring Gwen on 07929127593. gWen sTAPLeTOn

Porthcawl Parkinsons support group At the July meeting of the Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group Helen Miles from the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Centre gave us an interesting talk. Supported by colour slides it was about the coast between Aberthaw and the mouth of Ogmore River. Starting at Aberthaw, she told us that the old lookout post is being used as a learning facility. The classes held there are for schoolchildren to learn about the coastline and its dangers. We have some beautiful beaches along this coast, but the speed and height of the tides can make them dangerous. Helen went on to say that the beaches were not only about the sand and showed us pictures of the rock formations and the wonderful patterns formed during their creation.

A lot of the work is keeping the land and paths adjacent to the coast (that is not being farmed) in good condition. This had the knock-on effect of encouraging wildlife and some of the animals and birds that had deserted the area, were now starting to return and breed there. n CHArLesWOrTH

unregulated investments - all that glitters is not gold Investment funds linked to the price and returns on timber, fine wines and classic cars are, on the face of it, some of the most exciting investment available offering dazzling returns of up to 30 per cent a year; however, as the old adage goes, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Many of these funds have run into trouble recently, leaving some investors with major losses and others being denied access to their money. Only in the past couple of weeks, a firm called Brandeaux had to suspend its range of property funds as it could not meet investors requests to withdraw their cash.

Mortgage choice is the best for five years!

The continuing improvement in the market has seen mortgage choice reach its best for 5 years, according to a report out on 20th August. Certainly activity has been much more evident as buyers try to get in to their next home or sort out their proposed remortgage before the summer is out. At Cambria Financial, we have been kept busy with enquiries from across the region, as our open market facilities provided by All Types Of Mortgages Ltd offers funding in both very straightforward cases, as well as more difficult cases that the High Street turns away.

32 | Seaside News

Many of these funds are unregulated, meaning they have a great deal of leeway to put investors money into exotic areas or complicated instruments which promise glittering returns but offer little protection for the investor if things go wrong. Although the Financial Conduct Authority has tried to curtail the promotion of these unregulated schemes, many investors are still unaware of the potential pitfalls and continue to fall prey to the many adverts littering internet sites. For impartial, independent financial advice on fully regulated investments please contact us, or visit our newly redesigned website www. onelifefp.com CHAriTy

We have been able to assist first time buyers who have failed credit scores, those nearer retirement who find themselves holding a mortgage they’d rather be rid of but for which the High Street lenders have no appetite and those with interest-only mortgages who can’t see a way forward. We have access to specialist lenders, many of these being small building societies based outside Wales, as well as lenders who will often give the benefit of the doubt if you’ve had problems previously or even more recently in some cases, all subject to underwriting, of course. eQuiTy reLeAse

back from the plan holder. As of 1st January this year, the cost of advice must now be clearly deducted from a policyholders plan, or even paid for direct. i can’t afford an independent Financial Adviser?

In real terms the cost of advice has been dramatically reduced through transparency, it has also has driven IFA firms to be more service led. This in essence has meant that on the whole the level of service delivered by an IFA will have improved. Why do i need to pay for advice, i can do it myself surely?

Indeed you can, but indirectly this will often cost you more in the long run. An IFA will consider far more factors that you as an individual generally would. Things like Tax wrappers, Fund Selection etc. Do i pay for a consultation?

No. We will cover the cost of any initial consultation.

Not at all, if you don’t believe we add value don’t use us. Am i tied in?

Not at all, we believe you will stay because we are good at what we do. We don’t need contracts to tie our clients in, our service will mean they will never leave. Further information:

TROUBLE WITH TENANTS? Sara Hawkins, lettings manager with local estate agent Payton Jewell Caines says many landlords risk trouble with tenants when not abiding by lettings legislation, failing to carry out thorough referencing checks and presenting properties in poor state of repair.

Any landlord will tell you that their ideal tenant pays the rent on time, looks after the property and always abides by the conditions of their tenancy agreement. However, life isn’t always that simple. Circumstances change, income levels drop and even the most courteous and well-presented of individuals can throw caution to the wind and upset the neighbours with their all night partying.

Positive vibe in market

Local award winning estate agent Peter Alan has reported that the housing market is looking stronger than this time last year and is set to remain positive throughout the rest of 2013. Christine Armsby, Manager of the local John Street branch, commented, “It is great to see the market is gradually improving since this time in 2012. What is encouraging is that we are noticing an increase in the number of first-time buyers and investors coming back to the market. One of the main reasons for this is that sellers are now more realistic about what price to expect for their home. The result of this is that properties are marketed at an accurate

price, and so attract more interest from buyers.” Peter Alan has had a very successful year as they have been voted both the Best Letting Agency in Wales and the Best Estate Agency in Wales by The Sunday Times, for the second year running! Christine continued, “It is great to be part of an organisation which is recognised nationally as being the best of the best, this is a testament to the time we have invested making our service truly first class and shows we are continuously achieving high standards to help people find their ideal home. At Peter Alan we offer clients a wide range of services including sales, lettings, mortgages, legals, auctions, and our distinctive homes division – pa black. By having this wide range of services customers can be certain that we always ensure to do what’s best for them.” Peter Alan advertises all their properties on national websites, as well as on their own well-visited site. All properties are displayed with a range of internal and external photos,

a floorplan, and a property vidette, all helping to give buyers a clearer picture of a property. Further to this Peter Alan regularly advertises in the local newspaper, in the branch on their innovative TV screens and also on the facebook and twitter pages. Christine continued, “Our aim is to offer excellent value through high standards of service in order to help people to buy, sell or rent property as quickly and as effectively as possible. We are delighted to have been able to help an increased number of people move home during 2013 and we look forward to helping even more people find their perfect home in the coming months.” If you are interested in talking to Peter Alan about their wide range of services then call the Porthcawl team on 01656 771 600 today! Family matters

Keeping your website up-todate is important A website needs to be updated regularly. You wouldn’t consider creating a product brochure and using it for the next 5 years. Instead you would create a new product brochure on a regular basis and would add new items to it as your product range grows. You need to think of your website in the same way. A website that contains current information, helps to win the trust of your customers.

16–18 Mary Street Porthcawl CF36 3YA

Tel: 01656 773388 www.southwaleswebsolutions.co.uk

More and more customers search online for products and services on a daily basis. If they come across information that is outdated, they will look elsewhere. If they discover a website that is current and informative, they will want to find out more. An up-to-date website also helps your search engine rankings. Search engines, like Google, like fresh content. If your website content is regularly updated, for example in the form of a blog, Google will keep searching through the new content. As long as this content is relevant to your website and is of high quality then your website will be ranked favourably. Websites come in all shapes and sizes but the most important point to remember is that a website should mould to your business’ needs as your business grows. Give us a call to discuss your website needs on 01656 773388. sOuTH WALes WeB sOLuTiOns

There are certain times in the year when solicitors are inundated with new clients wanting advice in relation to family matters. One of these periods is the start of September when the children have returned to school and parents have more time to sort out their personal affairs. Perhaps they have been separated from their partner for some time and see the start of the school year as being the perfect time to seek advice about their legal position. Or perhaps they have experienced difficulties with their partner during the holidays and this has made them realise that the home situation is untenable and separation is the only option. Recent changes to the Legal Aid system mean that funding is now available for family matters where domestic violence

has taken place and a referral to the Police or Social Services has been made. If this is not the case, then you will have no option but to fund your case privately. At Melanie Lazarus and Co we realise that paying for legal advice can be very difficult and so we offer various solutions. Our initial appointment fee is fixed at £100 plus VAT. This will allow you up to an hour’s worth of advice from one our team of experts, which will give you the clarity you need in order to decide which steps to take next. If you require further action, and you are in receipt of certain benefits, we will charge at the rates prescribed by the Legal Aid Authority, which are roughly one third of our ordinary private rates. We also will be happy to discuss other options with you which will reduce your expenditure further. If you wish to speak to one of our team, please contact us at the address below. MADeLine rAnD

Combating inflammation

The following extract is taken from an article to do with combating soreness and fatigue after exercising but would be useful to anyone suffering with pain from inflammation. ginger: A natural pain reliever with a long history of medicinal uses, ginger (both raw and heat-treated) has been shown to reduce muscular pain by about 24 percent. CHerries: Cherries are a proven anti-inflammatory, as well as reducing your uric acid level. Cherries have been scientifically shown to help

with things like arthritis and gout, and may have some usefulness for general muscle soreness. One study involving a group of long distance runners found that tart cherry juice significantly reduced postexertion pain. CurCuMin: Studies have shown curcumin (the pigment that gives the spice turmeric its vibrant yellow-orange colour) is effective in relieving pain, increasing mobility, and reducing inflammation. OMegA-3 FATs: These beneficial fats are highly anti-inflammatory, as well as very beneficial for your heart. My favourite omega-3 fat is krill oil, which has unparalleled ability to quell pain and inflammation. suPPLieD By gLyn HArDWiCKe www.buysafer.

Meditation The surfer paddles out against the crashing waves. No matter how the waves break, Mother Nature provides resistance. The surfer has to remain focussed and accepting, control is owned by the universe. The surfer lets go and uses the breath to develop the required energy. Focus, energy and acceptance allow the surfer to enter a new path. Once the surfer makes it to the back of the surf, here awareness takes fold. Sitting on the board, the surfer observes the feeling of current, observes the coming of waves and uses discernment to work out which wave is going to be the moments focus. This state is called

tranquillity and the surfer loses a sense of self. Once the wave is chosen, action is initiated. The pathways of thought and feeling take this wave riding experience to a new dimension. Flourishing joy manifests at any point while the wave is being experienced. Simply bliss. This process continues and the experience of joy magnifies. The sharing of joy is kindness, in its purest form. Surfing is meditation and it feels good. Next time you’re on the beach and you see a surfer smiling, ask yourself: how can I learn to surf my emotional landscape? By the way, falling off – that’s wisdom. neviLLe evAns

The Cuisine scene Welcome to the new cuisine section ‘The Cuisine Scene’. Every month a different cuisine will be reported, designed to inspire some fresh ideas and deliver something new. I have a passion for food and have sampled cuisines worldwide. I hope you savour each and every one with me. First up it’s the green green grass of home – Wales. Our cuisine reflects some of the finest produce in the world. Welsh black beef and Welsh mountain lamb are known worldwide for their quality and are exported to Asia and the Middle East. Traditional Welsh food was developed to satisfy the needs of hardworking men and woman. Hearty, substantial dishes such as Cawl and Tatws Pum Munud appeased the appetites of farmers, coal miners and

fishermen. Welsh cooking includes seafood. The Gower is famous for its strong fishing culture. This is exemplified by the use of cockles and laverbread. The Gower Peninsula was one of the only places where the edible seaweed laver was found. Cheese is very traditional, with Welsh rarebit or caws pobi still being popular. Caerphilly is famous for its cheese, and many other brands have been produced thanks to widely raised dairy cattle. Mutton has made a comeback thanks to leading chefs and HRH Prince Charles. It is known for its gamey flavour, making it great for casseroles and stew. Its full flavour comes from quality sheep meat which has been aged for two years. Mutton is widely available so give it a go! Next month: Greece.

summer days

Words of comfort Yesterday you felt the pain, Today you feel the sorrow. But with words of comfort, We will help you through tomorrow. The unexpected passing, Of the one you love. Will only be helped with cwtches, All the way from up above. The thought of never seeing me, May make you weep and cry. But with your loving voice calling, You will feel me close by.

Baby dear I did not seek you, Baby dear Yet, though unplanned, you knew You’d found a place within my heart And as you heavier grew You’d nestle closer, day by day Until at last I knew This is my Son, my baby dear, And, yes, I’m in love with you

Although some memories will fade away, Our true love will never. So wear my ring close to your heart, And I will be with you forever.

You are the sunshine of my life You greet each day with joy With gurgling smiles and big blue eyes You’re such a darling boy I know you’ll grow to leave this nest And find so much to do But while you’re near, my Baby dear, Oh, I’m so in love with you

I think not; hope’s gone, or if not, then soon. The poison is taken, the strings are just breaking. Oh, foolish is love and fickle and tough and soft and destructive and easy corruptive. The blue sky haze, cleared. And the sizzling sun appeared. How hot and glorious the sun, seared. Where to sunbath? Where to be reposed? With factor fifty sunblock, be it known! Sun hat on, perched quaintly on my crown. In case the sun and heat make me frown. I wonder if I will go brown? To cool myself down; I drink a cold drink. Pouring the fizzy liquid to the glasses brink. Nothing stronger, or I’ll be in the pink. I’ll pour some water too; I think. Still not cool, I retreat to the shade. A shame, you say to need such aid. “Let the sun shine on”, I bade. For Summer’s warmth and cheer, will fade. AniTA griFFiTHs Pyle

“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”

THE CUCKOO’S CALLING by Robert Galbraith

This book made the headlines when it was revealed that it had been written by JK Rowling. Naturally, I reserved a copy straight away and have really enjoyed reading it. A crime novel, with an interesting private investigator as Comoran Strike is a wounded war veteran whose life is in disarray. The case gives him a financial lifeline, but it comes at a personal cost: the more he delves into a young model’s complex world, the darker things get – and the closer he gets to terrible danger…

Art in Focus

This month I wish to highlight a female Neo-classicist from the 18th century, who not only became one of the original members of The Royal Academy (founded in 1768), and was only one of two women members no less, but was considered to be one of the best artists of her era, as her friend the first President of The RA, Sir Joshua Reynolds claimed. This exquisite artist is Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) and

stag’s world of rock

there are two beautiful allegorical artworks on Shakespeare by her currently on display in gallery 4 where she is amongst some fine company: Sir Joshua Reynolds himself, Thomas Gainsborough, Richard Wilson, and Hogarth, to name a few. You will find her two small paintings on metal on either side of the ostentatious, but magnificent organ that Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn commissioned for his dining hall in his London home. Almost lost amongst the organs grandeur, these two works, which celebrate the genius of a female artist, are certainly worth observing the next time you visit the museum and highlights that women artists were just as good, if not better than their male equivalents. For the times they are a changing! Porthcawl Male Choir Around this time every year the choir turns its full attention to its annual concert and this year is no exception. The concert takes place on Saturday 14th September at the town’s Grand Pavilion, 7pm. This year’s special guest is another Welsh success story of the west end musical scene in the form of John Owen Jones. John was born in Burry Port in 1971 and is a graduate of the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He has appeared on TV as well as on the West End stage. He has played the role of the Phantom in the musical Phantom of the Opera and the pivotal role of Valjean in the long-running Les Miserables. In 2010 he appeared in the Royal Variety Performance alongside Alfie Boe, Colm Wilkinson and Simon Bowman, the ‘Valjean Quartet’ as they were described, each of them having performed that role in Les Miserables. Naturally the choristers are looking forward to being on stage with this highly talented performer. More details of John can be found online on Wikkipedia or on his own web site, JohnOwenJones.com Tickets are available at the Pavilion’s ticket office, price £15.

Mid Glamorgan Mixed Choir, Pencoed has finished another successful year. It culminated with a concert in Gilwern, near Abergavenny where we were invited again to sing. £553 was raised for Wales Air Ambulance Service. This was the last concert that our Musical Director, Norma Ridout conducted. It was an emotional evening for both Norma and the choir. Norma led and developed the choir for the last 13 years. We would like to pass on our sincere thanks and appreciation. Matthew Nash has now been appointed as our Musical Director, the choir is looking forward to working with him. The choir is now looking for an experienced accompanist who is confident playing a wide variety of music for our rehearsals and concerts. An honorarium is negotiable. We are friendly group of mixed ages and abilities. We raise money for charities from our concerts. A £300 donation was given to Y Bwythyn from our Annual Concert at St Crallo’s Church, Coychurch. We are always looking for new members. We meet Thursdays, Pencoed Bowls Pavilion 7.15 8.45pm. If you are interested in playing for the choir as an accompanist or joining us to sing please ring Louise Baker, Secretary 01656 667451.

Community café

Café visitors enjoying armchair exercises

If you are 50 or over, get out of the house, meet new friends and take part in lots of fun activities at Bridgend Carers Centre’s community café every Wednesday from 12.30pm – 3.30pm. Run as part of the Big Lottery funded Community Companions – befriending for over 50s programme, the café is in the Bridgend Carers Centre, 87 Park Street, Bridgend. Each week, freshly cooked hot and cold dishes are available to buy, together with a mixture of information sessions and lots of fun activities including sequence dancing, armchair

Blind Drive challenge

A driving event with a difference takes place at Llandow Race Circuit on Sunday, September 29. Guide dog owners from Bridgend borough will be among those taking part in a Blind Drive challenge to manoeuvre a dual-controlled vehicle around the circuit. Sighted participants can also sign up for the challenge - with the twist that they must do it blindfold! All vehicles will be provided with a qualified BSM driving instructor, talking each participant through the route and explaining the controls.

exercises, quizzes, arts and crafts or cooking to name but a few. Special agencies also visit each month offering individual support and advice on a whole range of subjects including finances and domestic issues. Participants have said that the café has given them “a new lease of life, enjoyment and friendship”. The Community Companions over 50s befriending scheme is co-ordinated by Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO) in partnership with a range of statutory and voluntary organisations including Bridgend County Borough Council. With lots of fun and informative activities each week, admission is free of charge. For further details, call 01656 658479. JAne sAviLe BAVO All participants are asked to raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship for Guide Dogs Cymru, with a special prize for the person who raises the most. There will also be the chance to drive a slalom track, with a prize for the person judged to have performed best. And why not test your parking skills by taking our blindfold reversing challenge? What’s more, there’s a Young Person’s Driving Experience for anyone tall enough to sit in a car and reach the pedals, again under dual controls. It promises to be an adrenaline-fuelled day, with a bouncy castle, stalls and raffle. Places are limited, so ring the Cardiff Mobility Team on 0845 372 7405 to register your place or e-mail frank.greig@guidedogs. org.uk

complete in 15hours 28min, very slow by most triathletes’ standards but at 58 was pleased to finish. The charity has made a change to its goal as it was becoming apparent that funding a holiday home for life limited children was still a few years away, as a trustee to our charity I was concerned that donations were lying idle in our charity account when those that have donated would probably be happier to see the money put to a good cause sooner than later. We are delighted to be able to help Ty Hafan the children’s hospice in part funding a new play/recreation area. The area will have swings and slides etc that can be accessed by the life limited children so that they can enjoy what others take for granted. Donations welcome via www. chloebigmore.co.uk

“I value the Seaside News which drops through my letterbox on so many levels. As an MP I value the opportunity to provide information to constituents. As a resident I value the information it brings me of local events and activities. As a householder I value the access to local companies which I use for work around my home. Congratulations to all at Seaside News for this 15th Anniversary

Madeleine Moon MP

Your magazine has been crucial in getting our club and its events known. May your ink never run dry!”

Congratulations, and we do appreciate the platform you give to community groups such as ours. You are helping to make a real difference, in so many ways, to our extraordinary and often under-recognised coastal strip of South Wales.”

Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club “Congratulations reaching your 15th anniversary. I must further congratulate you all on the quality of the Seaside News and how useful it has been to Porthcawl Male Choir in keeping the choir in the public’s eye. On a more personal note, as a native of Porthcawl now living just up the road in Baglan, I find it keeps me in touch with my former home town and the friends and aquaintances of yesteryear.”

“Firstly, many congratulations. The Seaside News has really been taken to the heart of local people. It’s ‘our’ paper, and as a former business owner, that is vitally important when considering local marketing strategies. You have always been helpful and professional, and I wish you all the best for the next 15 years!”

John Williams, Porthcawl Male Choir “Bridgend Astronomical Society congratulates Seaside News in celebrating its first 15 years of publishing. Our regular feature on events in the night sky has sparked a great deal of interest in astronomy across the entire area and this in turn has increased our membership. Thanks a million!”

Dr Charles Smith, Save Morfa Beach

Alana Davies, Formerly of The Dolls House and The Coach House shops

“I always know I will get a quick response whenever I need advertising or advice. It’s so important when office time is precious and the efficiency of the running of the Seaside News reassures me that my booking is dealt with professionally and promptly. I would highly recommend them to any local business. Happy 15 Years Seaside News! ”

“Congratulations to Mat and the Seaside News team on your 15th anniversary and many thanks for the great job you do informing the local community of news and events (with matching pictures – we love it!).

“The Save Morfa Beach group sends its good wishes to Mat Hardwicke and his team on achieving this 15th anniversary.
