EMYR’S KARAVANS4THEKIDZ Dear Editor, We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in achieving our latest fundraising venture. Emyr’s Karavans4theKidz in Porthcawl, yes both of them, have been in full use. We have received many letters of gratitude thanking us for enabling children with cancer and their families to have the much-needed respite during and after grueling chemotherapy and radiotherapy. For some of the families whose children did not survive this dreadful illness, families have thanked us for the memories they were able to make. Again thanks to the support of the community, we have been able to reach the £40,000 target to support children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. The staff in Velindre are extremely grateful that we have been able to support them in making the treatment as manageable & as child friendly as possible in an adult Cancer Centre. We will post photos in future issues. There is still an ongoing need for fundraising for Emyr Owen branch of LATCH. We need to continue to pay for the ground rent and fees as well as upkeep for both of Emyr’s Karavan4theKidz. We want to continue to enable families to have free holidays as many struggle financially. We would like to now also take on another project, buying an invaluable piece of equipment to be used on the Children’s Ward where children having treatment for cancer will need less anaesthetic and be less anxious and frightened. We look forward to posting more information in next month’s issue. Thank you to the Seaside News team. We really appreciate the Community’s support and ask that you will continue to do so and for those who want to join us, we are extremely grateful. Our next event is “Music in the Marquee” on Friday 21st September; performances from Jordan Marks, Sunnyside (formerly Evil Turkeys / Rude Soles), The 1990’s - Tribute to Britpop, Superfreak and DJ Jerry Nash - Tickets at the Hi- Tide 01656 782432. COUNCIL’S LATEST REGENERATION PLANS Dear Editor, Come to Porthcawl See our blocks of flats, our dense housing, our budget hotel and our new supermarket. But don’t come by car as there’s nowhere to park. This message will be sent out if BCBC’s latest plans for the ‘regeneration’ of Porthcawl go ahead as indicated. There will be no car parking on Salt Lake and some of the car parking area on Hillsboro car park will be utilised for the proposed budget hotel. The idea that a certain amount of car parking will be made available along the Portway will not make up for the losses elsewhere. In fact, BCBC has confirmed that there will be fewer car parking facilities available. There is no need to explain what effect this will have, it will be clear to everyone except, it seems, BCBC’s planners. When approaching the town from the Nottage roundabout, visitors should be met with an attractive and welcoming feature rather than blocks of flats or a bland and uninteresting ‘convenience store’ which are currently included in BCBC’s plans. It is the view of the Porthcawl Civic Trust Society that, as far as possible, Salt Lake should be divided into two parts with the half running alongside the Portway being used for car parking and the other side adjacent to the Eastern Prom being landscaped and used as a public amenity. This will leave space for the building of some form of leisure facility at some time in the future. The Society welcomes the idea of a boutique hotel on the Dunraven flats/Glamorgan Holiday Home site and the proposal to make improvements to the Eastern Prom and Hillsboro car park but fears that covering Salt Lake with ‘dense housing’ and a supermarket will do nothing to make Porthcawl into a premier seaside resort. CYCLING SUCCESS FOR CHARITY Dear Editor, Recently my husband Gareth Parry completed a 100-mile cycle ride around London. He raised over 400 pounds for charity and trained really hard. He did this as a challenge partly because he turns the big 50 later this year. I wondered if you could show this in the Seaside News? Gareth and his family are well known long term residents of Porthcawl. Antonia Parry, Porthcawl

Your views SHAME ON YOU Dear Editor, As regular dog walkers on the beaches in the area, and at Kenfig Nature Reserve we are quite use to collecting rubbish which has been left by people, but what we found on Sunday 22nd July at Kenfig Nature Reserve was really shameful. When we were walking at Kenfig on Saturday evening with our dogs it was obvious by the activity and music there was a party about to take place in the sand dunes, we saw a group of teenage boys carrying lots of bags and quickly followed by teenage girls also carrying bags and blankets, we assumed they were celebrating end of term from one of the local schools, we both thought at the time how much litter would be left after they finished! On Sunday morning we set off on our normal route which takes us past where the party had taken place and what we found was

ENJOY

have your say info@seasidenews.co.uk absolutely disgraceful, all the empty beer cans and bottles were strewn all over the dip in the sand dunes, we also found bottles of vodka and gin with at least half still left in, there was also the metal remains of at least 5 barbecues sticking out of the sand along with items of clothing, blankets, towels, barbecue utensils, plates, sunglasses, food, shoes and all the bags they obviously had used to take the items up with them, not to mention all the toilet roll strewn all over the dunes. We then spent an hour collecting all the items up and putting them in the bags for us to take to the bins, we had to make several trips back and for to the bins as there was just far too much to carry. We feel very strongly about this as not only is the dumping of rubbish disgraceful but had young children come across these items it could have caused an accident! With all the amount of publicity about litter spoiling our beaches and countryside we are amazed by the amount of people that are so quick to leave litter behind them, it is a very sad situation that people are not being taught to take their rubbish away with them. We feel privileged to live near such a lovely coastline and to have Kenfig on our doorstep and it saddens us to see people not respecting this privilege. I am sure the parents of these teenagers must know who they are as I am sure with the amount of alcohol that was consumed they certainly would have been totally wrecked on the Sunday. Shame on you! Lynne Wright Nottage, Porthcawl

BOOK OF THE MONTH Forever and a Day by Anthony Horowitz This is the story of the birth of a legend. THE legend. ‘But you didn’t tell me his name.’ ‘It’s Bond, sir,’ the Chief of Staff replied. ‘James Bond.’ One body. Three bullets. 007 floats in the waters of Marseille, killed by an unknown hand. It’s time for a new agent to step up. Time for a new weapon in the war against organised crime. Set amidst the brutal underworld of the French Riviera, it’s time for James Bond to earn his licence to kill. In this Fleming Estate sanctioned prequel, Anthony Horowitz takes us back to the days before Casino Royale, when James Bond is still learning the ropes off life as a double agent. A spy is dead. A legend is born. This is how it all began.

Local history PORTHCAWL MUSEUM DONATION

The museum recently benefited from a generous donation of £1000 from the Kenfig Archaeology Trust. The trust was set up five years ago when a group of like minded people came together following a successful archaeological dig in Kenfig. The group have decided to hang up their trowels but will still continue meeting on a regular basis discussing their passion for all things archaeological. Following the rules of their constitution the trust fund was wound up and a charity chosen to receive the remaining balance of the trust and it was felt that Porthcawl Museum was a worthy cause to support. A group of the members and trustees visited the museum and presented the cheque to Paul Joseph the museums chairman. They were then given a tour of the museum by Paul and other museum volunteers. TOWN COUNCIL MARKS FIRST WORLD WAR ANNIVERSARY 1918-2018 Bridgend Town Council has marked the Centenary of the cessation of the First World War with the placing of two soldier silhouettes outside the Job Centre in Market Street. This is part of a national project to raise public awareness of the anniversary and is a show of support locally for the continuing important work carried out by the Royal British Legion. The feature is illuminated by night and will stay in place for the next 12 months as a reminder that the sacrifices made by local people in the First World War must never be forgotten.

THE HERMIT OF THE KENFIG SANDS c1930-1940

In a hole in the Kenfig Dunes, lived Ben Evans. This was not a dirty hole. The skills that Ben had learned, from his time in society, lent well to the life he had chosen to live. He had been a timberman for 40 years. This gave him the knowledge to construct beams to hold up his metal roof, as well as wooden walls to make his home. Inside, there was furniture, where he would eat, sleep and read newspapers that a friend would give him. To find water he used a divining rod to excavate a well. For food he fished. The sea was a good friend of Ben’s. She would deliver him coal for the winter seasons, ingredients for candles, and whatever he needed to fix his boots. Though the sea wasn’t Ben’s only friend as he had two wild cats that guarded his stead and which he fed fish heads and mussels. His pension financed what the sea could not provide and bartering with local farmers got him all the bread, bacon and potatoes he could want; in exchange for fresh fish. As civilisation had nothing Ben desired, he had decided to live with nature. This simple life was a happy life.

PORTHCAWL PUPILS STRIVE FOR THE COMMUNITY

September 2018 sees a few spaces available in our After School Club. We currently collect from four local Primary Schools…. Nottage, Newton, Porthcawl and St Claires. The Burrows has a separate Clubhouse from the nursery building, which provides a specific space for the older children. We have plenty of stimulating activities on offer to keep the children busy, or a quiet room where they can unwind and watch a film. Our Club offers sessions until 5pm and 6pm. The children have a substantial snack and drink at 4pm. Our After School Club Manager is then responsible for organising seasonal activities and events. We currently have 3 large Burrows cars that are available to collect from the schools. Autumn will see the Clubhouse double in size as we expand into the unit next door. Our children are very excited by this as there will be more themed rooms and their outside space will be substantial. The children are keen to get a couple of guinea pigs to look after and have a nice big run for them. If you require After School Club for your child, please give us a ring on 771285. We also offer Breakfast Club and Holiday Club Julie

As part of the Welsh Baccalaureate Community Challenge, a team of Year 10 students from Porthcawl Comprehensive School have helped to revitalise local historical landmarks. After careful planning, they have transformed the landscape around the ancient wells in Nottage and Moor Lane, and given a massive facelift for locals and visitors to enjoy. Other pupils have run charity fares, organised sporting tournaments, directed budding actors and coached pupils in the mysteries of ICT. All were superb ambassadors and have collectively given a huge amount to the community. Over the last couple of years, pupils have improved the facilities at Cosy Corner and have reclaimed the non-vehicular strip of Locks Lane for walkers to enjoy. Porthcawl Comprehensive School welcomes any ideas for similar community projects in the future. Please let us know if you have any ideas on pressbox@ porthcawlschool.co.uk. Year 12 pupils have also finished the term in good community spirit with our annual Lavender Walk raising hundreds of pounds for Pancreatic Cancer and a beach clean on Rest Bay. I am looking forward to welcoming all our new Year 7 pupils at the start of term and we begin this year’s transition when we welcome families of prospective Year 7 pupils for 2019 to our ENGLISH TUTOR Open Evening on 3rd October (BASED IN NOTTAGE, PORTHCAWL) at 6pm. 20 years teaching experience as Andrew Slade a comprehensive school English Head Teacher teacher of 11-18 year old students Fully qualified for KS3, GCSE and A Level Current WJEC Examiner

Our Last Estyn Inspection Report was extremely positive and we were proud to read that: “One of the school’s strengths is the exceptional working relationship between teachers and pupils. The school has a strong ethos based on fairness and this creates a caring and disciplined environment.” “Transition work with partner primary schools is of the highest quality.” “Nearly all pupils behave very well in class and around the school. They are ready to learn and participate well in lessons. They are courteous and relate well to one another, to their teachers and to other adults.” In the Chief Inspector’s Annual Report Porthcawl’s “Helping Hands” transition programme has been identified by Estyn as an area of “Outstanding Practice”. PCS is proud to hold its Annual Open Evening for parents wishing their children to attend Year 7 in September 2019. school reports PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL It’s great to be back for a fresh new term. Our school is a wonderful community of children, parents, families and staff; it really is a happy place to be. We value happiness and wellbeing highly as we understand that they are key to a successful life. What an amazing year we had last year! We had great fun at the end of last term with the Llangrannog residential trip, trips to Bristol Aquarium, the Swansea WW2 exhibition and Porthcawl Museum (well worth a visit). We enjoyed putting on our summer production of Pirates of the Currybean, participating in sports day and completing all our class projects. We had lots of new families joining the school throughout the year and have a record number of children attending the school. New families are always impressed by the friendly nature, excellent behaviour and high standards of our children. As a green category school we have maintained excellent standards for several years. This year, our Foundation Phase results were the highest ever. Last year’s Year 6 were a fantastic bunch; we really were sad to see them go. I wish them a very happy and successful future. I am proud of our children and proud of our school! If you would like to arrange a visit, please ring on 01656 815660. I love showing people around! Jo Rowley Head Teacher

OPEN MIND

A RECIPE FOR WALES

TO YOU

My mind is open to spirit, As I sit here and pray, I hope they will connect with me, And give me words today. Some living words to write down, From loved ones who’ve passed above, Giving comforting words to pass on, To the ones here who they love. Using the gift I have been given, To write when deep in thought, Alongside the help and guidance, Which I have thankfully been taught. Like my spiritual gift deep in my soul, For years was just laying dormant within, Which will also come out of hiding for many, When their time comes for them to also begin ! David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

Four litres of daffodil leaves waving at the sky, a handful of Sugary crumbly Welsh cakes. A drop of Cardiff’s wonderful sea breeze, Pour a dose of a beautiful Welsh costume, Stir in a hefty dollop of fluffy sheep wool. three ml of Snowdonia snow as white as sheep on the hills, flavour with the three great feathers sitting on our red team shirt. Mix a dash of Pen-Y-Fan grass, cook it for 3000 years in the dark coals. Leave it to cool on the top of Pen-Y-Fan. Charlotte Fray 3AW Nottage Primary School

I’m leaving now There is no other way Please don’t worry About me I entered life With nothing But I leave With everything With memories Of times we shared The things we did together The happiness we knew before Will live with us forever And though time Won’t stop me leaving Please don’t stop believing That I’m still there! (Dedicated to a much loved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother in law, friend) Stuart Jones

WELCOME TO OUR LITTLE SETH Joyful, expectant You hurried to greet us Not reticent, fearful But hopeful and joyful ‘Here I am Yes, it’s me, though still so wee I’m your Seth.’ Even as the first Seth Did hurry to greet them, Those our first parents, Needing healing, fresh feeling Cain exiled and sighing, Blood of Abel still crying How they thank God for Seth, New hope and new life, Their Seth Lord, please bless our own Seth That he may bring blessing We rejoice in your gifting And with Grace are receiving May this child born so tiny Grow to be strong and mighty And bring joy to us all Our Seth (from Auntie Pauline and your family of Grace) Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

DIET, DON’T FRY IT

HAY ON WYE Our bags were packed and friends were met. Our chat continued with every step. Tea was drunk and cakes were scoffed. We walked and talked until we dropped. On every street we looked at books. We browsed and leafed through lots and lots. Some on History, Food and Wine. A coin in the ‘honesty box’ is fine. We enjoyed our breakfast, lunch and tea. Our trip now over, regrettably. We’ll meet again soon, we all agreed. What a fabulous time we had indeed. Lyn Lewis, Bridgend

Steer clear of chips, they inflate the hips Lay off the ice cream, it’ll broaden your beam Drink water and juice and you will stay spruce Slimline, no gin, will help you keep thin For most of the year stay away from the beer Dispense with all buns, just go for long runs Eat stuff that is green if you wish to be lean I could write a ballad on the virtue of salad To get what it takes, never eat cakes Throw away chocs, get a body that rocks So please don’t be fools, just follow the rules And you won’t be too big next holiday gig Sunbathe at ease and eat what you please When the holiday’s done, go back to line one Jim Kyle, North Cornelly

Local news CITIZENS ADVICE HELPS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS IN BRIDGEND A new report from Citizens Advice has found non-health related issues, such as debt or housing, are taking up more time during mental health appointments compared to last year. The number of people in Wales with mental health problems who use Citizens Advice reached over 9,500 last year. 8 in 10 practitioners surveyed by the charity said they had less time to deliver clinical care after being asked to assist with tasks like writing up debt management plans and contacting public service bodies. A number of Citizens Advice run advice sessions in GP surgeries and hospitals to allow health professionals to focus on treatment, and help people tackle practical problems which can cause or contribute to their poor mental health. Kate Henson Chief Officer of Citizens Advice Bridgend said: “Practical problems, like debt, can often be more difficult to manage if you also have mental health problems. “This new research shows it’s too often mental health professionals who are spending appointment time helping patients with wider problems. We are here to provide practical support for people with mental health problems in our community.” Citizens Advice Bridgend can be reached via their advice line number which is 0344772020 for a landline or 03004568356 or alternatively visit our office at 26, Dunraven Place, Bridgend, CF31 1JD

PORTHCAWL INDEPENDENT ALLIANCE Congratulations to the Seaside News on its 20th Anniversary! PORTHCAWL LOVE IT DON’T TRASH IT! is an ambitious new partnership project between BCBC and Porthcawl Town Council aimed at tackling plastic and other waste for Porthcawl to become the first ‘Litter Free Town’ in Wales. It will look at innovative ways to combat litter including: prevention, better management of resources and help local communities and business through public perception and development of positive attitudes towards the town and environment. Porthcawl has enjoyed a brilliant summer so far - the improvement of sea defences on town beach is nearing completion. Porthcawl enjoyed its biggest and brightest ever Carnival, a fabulous Classic Car event at the rugby club and the Rescue Fest by the harbour. We’d like to offer a special thanks to the Buccaneers, Lions and RNLI for organising these events and to all those volunteers who gave their time and expertise. We always welcome your ideas and comments. You can contact us and find out more via our Facebook page ‘Porthcawl Forward’ or email/telephone your local councillor. NEW REGENERATION PLAN FOR PORTHCAWL THE NEW regeneration plan announced by BCBC has much in it that I welcome. I am pleased that Porthcawl’s unique position locally as an important seaside resort has been acknowledged. While it is important to ensure that residents have their needs catered for, we must be aware of Porthcawl’s massive potential to attract visitors to the area - boosting the local economy and providing many jobs. My criticism of previous regeneration proposals was that they lacked any ambition. But the new plan includes proposals to develop two extra hotels in the town. The council is talking to the owners of the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel about possible redevelopment and they are also investigating the potential of the old Dunraven Flats site for a boutique hotel. Developments in the pipeline like the Maritime Centre and the Rest Bay water sports centre will offer a range of activities for tourists so it is important that the provision of accommodation to suit all pockets is addressed. Existing hoteliers have nothing to fear, in my view from any new hotels that arrive. The more choice a resort offers, the more people it will attract and there should be benefit for all. PORTHCAWL AND BARRY DOCK RNLI LIFEBOATS LAUNCHED TO A 53FT YACHT

Porthcawl’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Rose of the Shires, was launched and located the casualty yacht about 5 miles south west of Nash Point. Two volunteer crew members were put aboard with a salvage pump. They assessed the situation on board and managed to stem the ingress of water with the pump. Upon the arrival of the larger Barry Dock lifeboat the Atlantic 85 transferred two crew members from Barry Dock lifeboat onto the casualty vessel before recovering their own two crew members. Porthcawl lifeboat then returned to station whilst the Barry Dock Lifeboat took the yacht under tow and back to Barry Dock for the skipper to carry out repairs. Lifeboat Operations Manager at Porthcawl, Philip Missen, said, ‘The casualty yacht crew did the right thing by putting out the MAYDAY call as soon as they were aware of taking in water. This allowed us and Barry Dock lifeboat to located and manage the situation and avoid a possible sinking of the casualty vessel’.

DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH

Carrie is a sweet and gentle fourteen-year-old Crossbreed. This golden oldie is looking for her retirement home where she can enjoy all the home comforts. She does get on with other dogs, but due to her age, she doesn’t want dogs bothering her too much. Carrie will suit a quiet home with children 11 years and over, who will understand that she does prefer to be left to her own devices. She will need owners who are around during the day as she is not used to being left for long. This sweet girl is an ideal companion for those who are unable to do too much walking. If you would like to know more about Carrie, then please contact Dogs Trust Bridgend on 01656 725219; or pop down to the centre at Court Colman CF31 4NG. THE DA VINCI CRIME Leonardo Da Vinci’s iconic painting, the Mona Lisa, measures just 76 x 53 cm and is owned by the French government. The painting can be found on display in the Louvre. However, on Monday 21st August, during the long hot summer of 1911, it disappeared. Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa on wood, not canvas, so the thief had not rolled up the masterpiece. The police found a left hand thumbprint at the scene, but in those days only the prints on the right hand were kept on file. Rewards totalling 80,000 francs were offered, to no avail. Initially, the French police suspected Pablo Picasso of the theft. He was questioned, but released without charge. Then, two years later, on 10th December 1913, the Mona Lisa reappeared in Florence when a young man, Vincenzo Perugia, tried to sell the painting to an antique dealer for 500,000 lire. The antique dealer summoned the police and they arrested Perugia. Perugia went on trial in Florence in June 1914. He claimed that he had stolen the Mona Lisa out of patriotic duty. This defence endeared him to the Italian public and he was sentenced to just one year fifteen days imprisonment. Hannah Howe, Amazon #1 author https://hannah-howe.com

ST THEODORE’S CHURCH SECURES BIG LOTTERY FUNDING! The parish of Kenfig Hill is pleased to announce that they have secured £100,000 in funding from the People and Places fund of the Big Lottery. This will enable the parish to remodel the interior of the church to allow for greater use by the wider community. Part of the work will entail getting rid of the unsightly and inefficient radiant heaters and installing underfloor heating. So whether you attend a weekly service, a wedding, christening, a concert, meetings or use the church for the community events and activities we intend to offer in the future, the building will be a much more welcoming venue. Club features PORTHCAWL U3A

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT

In our highly competitive society attending a first formal interview as a teenager can be a nerve racking experience. Ever ready to answer a call to support their community, Porthcawl U3A members recently conducted mock interviews with Year 12 students at Porthcawl Comprehensive, with each student allocated a half hour slot to be grilled by two members many of whom are former teachers and learning professionals. The whole process was made to be as realistic as possible and was followed by the delivery of feedback directly to the student - helpful hints and practical advice. The more practice young people get in acquiring and then finetuning those important self-presentation skills the more success is likely to come their way. Our thanks to U3A member Malcolm Cowper for organising this innovative event and - of course - to all who contributed to make the day such a success. Porthcawl U3A resumes its normal programme of communitybased activities from this month with something to suit all tastes. And for those yet to discover us, a special offer - half price membership subscription to the year-end! Come discover… Brian Thomas Secretary, Porthcawl U3A sec@porthcawlu3a.org www.porthcawlu3a.org

You might recall, at the beginning of 2018, I announced that the Talbot Community Centre had been successful in the Groundwork/Tesco Bags of Help promotion; we won £3,000 in their competition where shoppers were able to place their blue tokens in their chosen charity plastic bin in the Port Talbot branch of Tesco, and actually watch the amount of tokens grow over two months. Whenever shoppers at Tesco purchase carrier bags, the money is put into a fund, and Tesco then gives the monies to charity. Well, that project has now come to an end. We have had lots of help and advice in what to plant, how to plant, how to water, when to water, and so far, the garden is looking good! Members of the Talbot can now sit outside and enjoy the sunshine or shade, surrounded by shrubs and conifers. I know the summer is almost over, so we are now looking for bags of daffodil and tulip bulbs and winter pansies … and less watering. I’M BENTLEY, A STAFFY/LAB CROSS

WATER ON MARS

I’m all labrador but with a wide staffy smile I found myself at the RSPCA when I turned one, apparently I was naughty? I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong as nobody gave me any guidance. The RSPCA passed me to the care of Malpeet K9 Academy. The Bridgend company specialise in training dogs and handlers to work in various industries in the UK and overseas. These areas include drug detection, explosive detection, general-purpose security and conservation protection. The RSPCA do not usually pass dogs to private security companies but due ‘my issues’ this was considered my best chance of happiness. Malpeet think I’m special and are training me for a special job. My trainers are trying to raise funds for me to become something called an anti-poaching protection dog, which means I’ll be helping rangers in a conserve in Africa to protect some of the most endangered animals in the World. I will write again next month to tell you more, and how you can help me become a k9 Eco-Warrior. Please follow my progress: Facebook: Wildlife Protection Dogs Facebook: Malpeet k9 Biathlon Instagram: @the_rangers_dog

Mars is still very bright low in the south during this month and easy to recognise. The planet is inhospitable to human life but data collected by ESA’s Mars Express has revealed a pond of liquid water buried under layers of ice and dust in the south polar region. Evidence for the Red Planet’s watery past is prevalent across its surface in the form of dried-out river-valley networks and gigantic outflow channels imaged by orbiting spacecraft. Orbiters, together with landers exploring the Martian surface, also discovered minerals that can only form in the presence of liquid water. But the climate has changed significantly over the course of the planet’s 4600-million-year history, and liquid water cannot exist on the surface today, so scientists are looking underground. Early results from the 15-year-old spacecraft already found that water-ice exists at the planet’s poles and is also buried in layers interspersed with dust. Having a supply of liquid water is welcome news for any future human exploration of the planet, making it a less formidable task. At present, the only viable mission is the SpaceX Interplanetary Transport System scheduled to launch in 2024. Clive Down FRAS

On Saturday July 7th we once again welcomed a fantastic crowd on to the village green at Newton for our Summer Fayre. Blessed with sunshine we got the ball rolling with the lovely sound of the church bells from our bellringers . Guided tours of Porthcawl’s most iconic landmark were available all day provided by our knowledgeable friends .At 11.30 we were treated to the sweet harmonies of the Rock Choir belting out some great soft rock anthems .The official opening at midday saw Britain’s number one Sir Tom Jones tribute Dean Jones dazzle the crowd with some showstoppers .The quality entertainment just kept on coming with a lovely selection of tunes ably performed by the Porthcawl Community Orchestra . Next up it was the turn of the Elindia Belly Dancers to mesmerise the men folk ,with great moves to some fab Eastern tunes .The children were magnificently behaved as they sat on the green to be wowed by Loopy Lews Magic show .The stalls were busy and the helpers coped admirably with a very sunny day . On cue the green was next treated to great show tunes from the youngsters of all ages that form the talented Performance House drama group .To close the day ,the ladies and gents tug of war teams from the two village green pubs did battle, with honours even ,the Ancient Briton ladies winning and the Jolly Sailor men’s team victorious .Many many thanks go to all involved in putting on this event and an astonishing £9000 was raised for our lovely village church. LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS On the 4th August we held our Vintage Fair at the Rugby Club. The Mayor of Porthcawl opened the fair where some 150 plus classic cars were on show - there was the usual bouncy castle, which proved very popular with the youngsters, stalls, and our famous Lions BBQ - which was heavily in demand all afternoon. We wish to thank Porthcawl Rugby Club for once again hosting the fair. By the time you read this we will have finished our season of car boot sales which this year due to very good weather and continued support from the public will enable us to help other charities and organisations in need. Keep checking our website for up and coming events. If you have any books which you wish to donate for our book sales please contact me: Sonia 01656 772374 and I will arrange collection if you are unable to deliver. Sonia Wilkinson

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hi all, not so long ago I had the privilege of sharing my conversion story in a very good church, called Baglan Community Church. It was recorded and can be seen and heard on YouTube, Neil Harvey Baglan Community Church, or on my website neilchristianharvey.com. There are lot’s of other great resources there and so why not watch some. You may find exactly what you have been looking for in life. It was about 15 years ago that I had an amazing experience with Jesus when I was at rock bottom in my life. He lifted my burdens and transformed me as a person. God is really in the business of transformation. Nothing else seems to be able to do it. He goes way beyond anything in this world. It is an amazing feeling when you suddenly realise that God really does exist and you find a new relationship with the most amazing person in the universe. It feels like your coming home after being away for a long time. So go on, why not watch the YouTube clip. My prayer is that you will meet Him (God!). Gob bless you all! Neil Harvey

Deadline date for the October 2018 issue is Saturday 15th September BASTILLE NIGHT WITH PORTHCAWL’S TOWN TWINNING ASSOCIATION To quote Dickens “T’was the best of times, it was the worst of times” when the Bastille was stormed. Whether the Twinning Association Dinner celebrated with apple pie and onion soup in wisdom or foolishness was hard to tell. However, the Marseillaise was sung in an epoch of belief, the tune played beautifully in a season of light, a film of all things French was played out before us showing both springs of hope and winters of despair, and toasts were made to everything that was before us.

Club features PORTHCAWL BUCKANEERS CARNIVAL 2018

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa Thank you to Porthcawl Lions for letting us sell surplus tools at the Classic Car show last month. When you read this the workshop will be busy preparing Carpentry Kits and Automechanic Kits for the Wuni Zooya Development Programme in Ghana, which will be leaving the workshop this month. We have the wooden crates to make and are currently short of sheets of 12mm plywood, donations would be appreciated. We have had feedback from our shipment to Uganda and Julius tells us that following his training in Building and Carpentry trades, his business is growing and he is earning 700,000 Ugandan shillings per month. The whole community is benefitting from the team’s work. Such a big change from struggling in subsistence farming which was barely feeding the family. Our key objectives by year 2021 will be to deliver 35-40 projects per year, and to meet the increasing demand for power tools in Africa. Access to power is increasing in many of the African countries that we operate in. This brings with it an increasing demand for electrical tools and sewing machines for our projects and trainees. John Hanson Group co-ordinator Tel: 01656 786367

The theme of the carnival was ‘A year by the Sea. Eleven floats and numerous walkers entered the carnival procession, which started in Sandy Bay and weaved its way through the excited crowds along its route to Porthcawl rugby club. The floats were outstanding and many groups had spent months putting them together. The procession was led by Porthcawl Museum. The float commemorated the suffragette movement. In 1907 at the Porthcawl carnival suffragettes were arrested and escaped from a black Mariah!!! Ion the float Roy Noble played Lloyd George and was accompanied by a number of local female politicians. Roy Noble entertained the crowds with speeches of the time. This float was accompanied by over a 100 women dressed as suffragettes. Mingled within the procession there were two giant lobsters, a galleon ship with pirates and two seahorses depicting the theme of the carnival. Thousands of visitors and residents watched the parade and followed the procession to Porthcawl Rugby field. At the rugby field continuing with the theme was an exhibition of the latest technology on Avatars and 3D experience. Nearly 2000 people visited the exhibition and were entertained by avatar Captain Jacqui Rabbit and the 3D experience of a deep-sea snorkelling experience. This exhibition was a tremendous boost to the thousands that visited the carnival field. The organisers were overwhelmed with the quality and build of the floats and deciding the winners was a difficult decision. The awards were sponsored by the COOP’s of Porthcawl and presented by COOP staff and the Mayor of Porthcawl, Norah Clarke. The winners are as follows: Adult float –Ancient Briton, Children’s float-Blue Water Club and WalkersWebb Sisters. The carnival is a community event that raises thousands for local causes in Porthcawl.

FINAL PRETRIP KANDERSTEG ARTICLE Hello, we are the Bridgend explorer scout unit and in summer 2018 we, will be going to the Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland. KISC is a World Scout Centre, where groups can meet other scouts from all over Europe. Therefore we will not only be able to have new experiences, but meet with people around the globe and learn all about their cultures There are 27 members of our Explorer unit who are going to KISC in August 2018, mainly young people between 15 and 18 years of age. This trip will be a monumental experience for us to learn new things and gain knowledge to help them through life, bringing Scouts together. We have finished our final preparations and are ready to leave for Kandersteg on Saturday August 11th. All the hard work done throughout the year has been worthwhile as we are now ready and excited to go to Switzerland. As we are about to go to Kandersteg, there will be an article to discuss all the activities we participated in whilst at Kandersteg. Thank you for your time and all the help with our cause is much appreciated. Conor Farrell-John (Explorer Scout)

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN PORTHCAWLYEAR OF THE SEA On the afternoon of May 12th, the 34ft yacht ‘Rival Star’ sailed into Porthcawl on Day 2 of a roundBritain expedition seeking the early voyages and life stories of Celtic Christianity. 200-250 people turned out to greet the ship at the harbour. (See www. navigatorsoffaith. com and blog 12 for the visitors’ appreciation of the people of Porthcawl.) A reception was held in the YMCA where the navigators talked about the voyage and shared discussion on local community issues. Churches Together in Porthcawl, accompanied by the accomplished Ogmore Valley Silver Band, held the annual Songs of Praise for Sea Sunday on 8th July at the bandstand, especially significant for the Year of the Sea . Rev John Hanson displayed model boats (lent by Margam Park Modellers): a Pilot Cutter ‘Cariad’, The Lightship 2000, an RAF Seaplane Tender and a Lifeboat. Those boats illustrated navigation, Guidance, Rescue and Salvation. The Mayor Cllr Norah Clarke read out messages from the navigators and a small Brigid’s cross, given by them was commissioned to be taken on pilgrimage, eventually arriving at York Minster at Easter. It was handed over by Canon Masson to Neville Thomas of Bridgend for the first part of its journey. Rosalie Maddy

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL 680 hours watchkeeping were undertaken during July. We dealt with 14 logged incidents and monitored 20 others. Indeed, our response to one incident resulted in a commendation from Porthcawl RNLI for our actions. We logged and monitored 184 commercial vessels,1006 leisure vessels and 50 others. In August we responded to a capsized dinghy we’d observed off Newton Point. One occupant had drifted away from the vessel and the other had difficulty sailing single-handed. HM Coastguard were contacted, a Mayday declared and both of the Porthcawl lifeboats, RNLI Lifeguards, Llantwit Major and Porthcawl Coastguard Rescue Teams and the Coastguard helicopter were deployed. The close working relationship we have with the Search and Rescue assets ensured another incident ended with a safe outcome. We were invited to the RNLI’s Rescue Fest 2018 in July, where visitors gained an insight into our role and we enlisted a number of new recruits for our September intake. We are helping Porthcawl RNLI with their initiative regarding the use of high visibility floats by open water swimmers in the bay and harbour entrance. In collaboration we are considering a number of options for making the area safer for both swimmers and boat users. Nick Weedon Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH In a world where everything is arranged to convince us of the importance of being first, Jesus offers us a route to true greatness by telling us: “Stop! You are running toward the wrong objective. What you are seeking can only be found through service and self-sacrifice. Now, turn around and prepare to race to the bottom.” What if medals were awarded for the ‘Race to the Bottom’? What if we could win a gold medal for being the first to say: “I’m sorry. Please forgive me”? What if a silver medal was offered for uniting with others to serve the common good? What if a nation could receive a bronze medal by saying, “We want to be the first in promoting economic stability and global peace”? The race that Jesus calls us to run requires faith in God’s promise to lift those who humble themselves, and to give new life to those who lay down their lives for others. Jesus says to those who would follow him: “Prepare yourselves to race to the bottom, because it’s the only way up.” God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

The Supreme Court however overturned that decision and concluded that Mrs Mills’ decisions had left her without capital and had increased the costs of her basic needs. Many have seen this decision as a victory against “the meal ticket for life of indefinite maintenance orders. The case fitted with the growing trend for Courts to assume that a spouse who may earn less and has fewer assets can return to work and be financially independent following a divorce. Therefore, your ex wife may find that her application to increase maintenance may be doomed and many would say rightly so! Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

Q)I am obliged to pay my ex wife spousal maintenance for life following our divorce 10 years ago. She is appalling with money, has run up debt and is now threatening to take me back to Court to increase my payments. Surely this can’t be right? A)On the 18th July of this year, the Supreme Court in the UK ruled that a businessman Graham Mills should not have to increase the amount of maintenance he paid to his ex wife 16 years following their divorce after she had managed her finances poorly. Following their divorce settlement in 2002, Mrs Mills had received sufficient funds to buy a property mortgage free but had traded up to live in a more upmarket properties leaving her with a mortgage and no remaining capital. As a result of unwise decisions, she had ended up living in rented accommodation and had applied to the Courts for maintenance to be increased. Mr Mills Chairman of a company Technics Group had been ordered by the Court of Appeal last year to increase monthly maintenance payments to his former spouse Maria from ÂŁ1,100 per month to ÂŁ1,441.00 per month for life because she was “unable to support her basic needsâ€?.

SEPARATION AND DIVORCE Divorce is one of the most stressful and emotionally difficult life events. Getting the right advice can help guide you through the divorce process. At the point of separation, the family home can be an emotionally charged environment. You might want to leave the family home or you might want your partner to leave. However, before moving out, consider the following: • Do you or your partner have an alternative place to go, somewhere that meets your needs and your children’s needs? • What is best for your children? If possible, you should aim for as little upheaval as possible – so that the children can remain close to their school, their friends and their childcare. Being close to your support network and to your work will also be important. • Safety: if you are in an abusive relationship, your safety and your children’s safety should be your paramount concern. It is possible to apply to a divorce court for an occupation order, which is an order excluding your partner from the house. Should you consider this step necessary, specialist advice is crucial. For separating parents, sorting out the arrangements for their children can be highly emotionally charged, making it difficult to agree – particularly in the early stages. In time, hopefully the practicalities of child care can be discussed and agreed upon freely. If you still cannot come to an agreement then mediation should be considered. Counselling can also be very valuable in some cases, which you can attend together or separately. Speaking to someone about the breakdown of the relationship might help you put matters in perspective and make speaking with your expartner easier. You can also consider family therapy. Although there will be some circumstances where court intervention is required, going to court should be a last resort. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE CLOSE TO ME DIES

If a family member has died but you cannot find a will, you should make sure you have checked thoroughly: • Search the house and any paperwork. • Contact any solicitors or other professional advisers you know they used. • Consider searching the National Will Register, which may provide a record if a solicitor holds her will. • Ask their bank in case they have the will. • Consider searching at the Probate Registry in case they have the will in safe-keeping. • Ask any other family or friends who you think might know. If you still can’t find a Will, you may need to assume that it doesn’t exist and that person died ‘intestate’. If so, you can apply to the Probate Registry for a ‘Grant of Letters of Administration’ or ask your solicitor to do this on your behalf. If you do locate a Will, you will need to ascertain who are appointed as the executors, this gives them authority to deal with the estate by collecting in all assets, applying for Grant of Probate, selling or transferring Property/Land and distributing the assets in accordance with the Will. It will also be the executors who notify the beneficiaries of their entitlement to the estate. The Will may specifically detail who is entitled to what personal items (Jewellery, Panting etc) however often it may say ‘All personal chattels to be distributed between my children equally.’ Or it may be silent on this issue altogether and this is when problems normally arise particularly if these have sentimental value. It can help to have everything valued (some items may already have been valued as part of the process of working out any inheritance tax payable). After all, there is little point arguing over who gets something if it isn’t worth more to you than it could be sold for. You might then be able to work out a system for sharing the other items out. For example, you might take it in turns to each pick something you want or you could ‘auction’ the items among yourselves, with the winning bidder for each item agreeing to accept a proportionately smaller share of any cash.

Once agreement has been reached, then the remaining estate can be distributed in accordance with the Will once the monies and assets have been called in, and debts from the estate paid.

LALESTON WI We did not meet in August, as this was our summer break. We had a wonderful trip to Lacock and Bath on 10th July with the weather being lovely as well. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 6th September when we will be having our Harvest Auction with the wonderful Maureen Morgan being our auctioneer. Ladies are welcome to join us as visitors and have a taster of our W.I. we meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7.15pm at The Blandy Hall Laleston. More information from Diane Marshall on 01656 656600

PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL

Bridgend Soroptimists recently visited Glyndwr Vineyard in Llanblethian and enjoyed a delightful evening in glorious sunshine. The vineyard is the oldest and largest established vineyard in Wales, established in 1979 and located in truly idyllic countryside. Members were given a comprehensive presentation of the winemaking production process and enjoyed sampling the different varieties on offer. A superb home cooked supper followed, with yet more wine sampling and a tour of the vineyard, which included meeting the pet Llamas. The visit was the last meeting of the club before the summer recess and ended on a perfect note. Club meetings resume on 12th September at the Heronston Hotel Bridgend. For more information go to http://sigbi.org/bridgend-and-district Follow us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/ BridgendSoroptimists. Eileen Bayley

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS We didn’t meet last month but our July meeting began on a happy note when we welcomed two visitors who we hope will return. Which they may well do as they heard a very interesting talk from Pam Evans about “Peace Mala”. I can best explain this by quoting from their leaflet “Creative education that empowers all uniting the world in peace”. Pam was a teacher who after 9/11 saw the need for better racial understanding. Do go on line at www.peacemala.org.uk to find out more about this organisation. Our chairman Dee Richardson told us about the national A.G.M. at Brighton which she had attended with three other members. Also at the meeting flowers were presented to Sheila Frudd for her Golden Wedding and to Gwen Watts on her special birthday. Thanks Gwen for inviting us to her great party! We also enjoyed our monthly lunch at the Angel pub Maudlam recently refurbished. This months meeting is on September 12th 2.0 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when we will celebrate Harvest with a tea and entertainment. Do come and join us. Dorothy Thomas Tel: 01656 772157

I expect most of you have had your summer holidays. I hope you had a great time. We are looking forward to some autumn treats; a buffet has been arranged at The Grove golf club, for our September meeting. An itinerary for the year will be presented by Carol Lowry, our president for this year and put forward for discussion. The October quarterly district 15 meeting is in the Aberavon Beach Hotel in Port Talbot, always interesting and informative. A trip to a Christmas market is proposed for November, and a Christmas party will be organised for the children and grandchildren of Inner Wheel and Rotary members. The winter outing is being arranged to see Matilda in December and is already well subscribed. We at the Inner Wheel wish you all a happy September and would welcome you to our meeting on Tuesday 4th. Suzanne Jefferies

Deadline date for the October 2018 issue is Saturday 15th September

Business & finance AND SO THEY WENT UP… In what some people considered a surprise move, the Bank of England increased interest rates by 0.25% just a week or so ago, at the time of writing this. This increase comes at a time when many people are still feeling the pinch and with the High Street also suffering major issues due to lack of footfall and other factors, including online shopping. At times like this, it is often a wise move to take a good look at the finances and see where changes can be made to rebalance the budget and this is especially true of people simply sitting on standard variable rate for their mortgage when they could be getting a new, much cheaper deal simply by talking to an Adviser who can take a look at the whole market. This situation is also true of people who are still paying mortgages in retirement, especially on interest-only and very often it is down to a lack of knowing who to speak with to get things sorted. I am in my 32nd year of advising clients, seeing around 200 per year and have saved many thousands of people a great deal of money by helping them onto better deals. So whether you are in a family mortgage situation or indeed are now in retirement or approaching it, having a chat could be most beneficial, especially as many lenders are keen to lend and still at very low rates of interest in many cases. Many of these lenders are offering particular help to the later life age sector, offering what the high street lenders are not keen to do. Just pick up the phone and ask the questions – we can provide the answers in your situation and manage to help most people who come to us. Whatever your mortgage and other borrowing needs, talk to us at no cost or obligation. At least you’ll find out where you stand and what could be available to you. 01656 782545 is the number you need – do it now! PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial 01656 782545

WHAT DOES RETIREMENT PLANNING MEAN FOR YOU? Retirement is often seen as the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. Planning for it isn’t just about getting your money organised, although that’s obviously very important. Depending on your circumstances you may want to take the opportunity to completely change your lifestyle, move home, start a new business, travel the world, learn a new skill or simply put your feet up. And like all big projects in life, the more time you can invest in thinking it through, the better the outcome will be. MANAGING YOUR MONEY Getting financial planning advice before accessing your pension pot can go a long way to help alleviate financial worries later on in life. With longevity increasing, more people than ever will spend longer in retirement than previous generations. The changes in legislation have given those about to retire far greater freedom when it comes to using their pension pot, but freedom brings with it greater individual responsibility. Low interest rates and periods of market volatility can make income planning for the future a difficult task without professional advice. BUDGETING FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE It makes sense to begin drawing up a budget for your retirement 42 | seaside news

that covers your likely income needs. There are various factors to consider; you may have income from employment, equally you could choose to give up work altogether and tick off the items on your bucket list. You may decide to downsize from a family home to a smaller retirement apartment that is cheaper to run and means you can extract some equity to bolster your income. You may want to help children or grandchildren financially by paying for school fees or helping them with a deposit for a home of their own. You will also have to plan for a time when you might need to pay for help around the house, and for the likelihood of needing medical and nursing care in later years. Taking professional advice can help by creating a roadmap for your financial future. PHILIP VAUGHAN Abacus Assurance 01656 772222

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

It’s Show time! Our Annual Show is held on the first Saturday in September each year. It is the culmination of a great deal of hard work and preparation by our club members. The show includes a wide range of classes from wonderful fruit, flowers and vegetables to artwork, craftwork, baking, preserves and photography. We are all keeping our fingers crosses for the entries in the new Children and Families section. It is all a bit hectic but also a great deal of fun! The show is also when we all renew our membership and welcome new members. The membership card also doubles up as the programme of upcoming events and talks for our forthcoming club year. Another exciting year in prospect! In our gardens we are busy collecting seeds to propagate new plants next year and potting on new plants that we have from cuttings taken in June/July. Later in the month it will be time to start cutting hedges as the birds breeding season is over. Even though we have had a very dry summer, hedge growth does not seem to have been checked very much so there will be plenty of material for the compost heaps. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Winter is approaching! Instead of watering and deadheading taking up your time, the great clear up begins, one good thing is damage from pests and diseases will be slowing down now and weeds are more susceptible to weed killer at this time of year! Now’s a good time to plant new perennials, the soil is still moist and warm enough for roots to become established before winter sets in, they are not too expensive and in the following years can be lifted and divided, so then cost practically nothing, Bargain! Prune back climbing and rambling roses once the flowers have faded, but wear strong gloves this can be a particularly spiteful job. Cut off foliage of main crop potatoes at ground level 3 weeks before lifting them to prevent blight spores infecting the tubers, this also helps to firm the skin of the potatoes (we’ve all had them fall the pieces when boiling Yuk!) Time to plant garlic again (where does the year go!) they need cold weather to grow well – glad something does! We have a trip to Malvern flower show 30th September. Fab day out - come and join us, we are on Facebook! Chris Early

Health & wellbeing LIFTING THE LID ON EDIBLE FAT FALLACIES Let’s get something straight at the outset: eating fat — not even saturated fat — doesn’t make you fat! That’s despite what you may be reading in the media or being told by your dietitian. The real demons that are causing waistlines to balloon are our over-consumption of carbohydrates, especially highly processed refined carbs (think sugar, bread, pasta, pizza, cakes…) — along with our pre-occupation with overly frequent snacking and eating. It obviously doesn’t help if you then also spend hours every day not moving – and you also see fit to top up on sugary and junk foods. OK – diets consistently loaded with some types of fats, such as industrially-created trans fats (e.g. fried or baked foods containing ‘hydrogenated’ oils), large amounts of polyunsaturated Omega-6 fats (e.g. from refined vegetable oils like soya, sunflower, corn, safflower, etc.) or specific kinds of saturated fats (e.g. palmitic acid from refined palm oil) can be harmful and contribute to chronic diseases especially heart disease in the long-term. But it’s a disservice to fats generally to refer to all saturated fats as ‘bad’, just as it’s misleading to label all polyunsaturated fats ‘good’. Contrary to what some health authorities and dieticians who choose to ignore the currently available evidence are saying specific types of saturated fat, such as the lauric acid and the medium-chain triglycerides in virgin coconut oil, or the palmitoleic acid found in whole (but not skimmed) milk dairy products, are just plain good for us – at least in moderation as with most things dietary. MEDITATION I’ve spent eight months writing about aspects of generosity. It is an aspect of Buddhist practice that is worthy of consideration. The building blocks I suppose. I would recommend a good book that has a chapter devoted to Generosity and other helpful chapters. ‘Parami - ways to cross life’s floods’. The author is a Buddhist monk by the name of Ajahn Sucitto. He has written excellent books and is an elder monk in the Thai Forest Tradition. The book references the Pali Cannon and gives excellent examples. If you google the title and author, you will find that the book is free on the internet. Like all things in a Dhamma Life - freely offered. If you would like to receive the entire eight months of columns, please contact me on my email evansneville@aol.com The theme for the foreseeable - daily informal meditation. Neville Evans

Arts & music COR BRO OGWR’S SUMMER SOIREE

A change of venue and a very different musical programme for the choir’s summer concert, but the same high standard of singing and an appreciative audience. A hot evening at Coleg y Dderwen, but we enjoyed the variety of pieces, which ranged from humour to romance, folk songs, gospel, and contemporary Welsh music. The heat did not bother our talented accompanist, Glenn Crooks, who accompanied our soloist, Erin Alexander and us. She gave us some wonderful theatrical moments, including singing into her mobile and wearing a wedding crown. We welcomed the Deputy Mayor of Cowbridge and Huw Irranca Davies amongst our audience. Committee members organised a popular interval bar. Our thanks to Coleg Y Dderwen, Glenn and our conductor, Rosie Howarth. We soon start work on our 20th Anniversary Gala Concert, singing a selection from the past 20 years. Saturday December 8th in All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl. But before that, we are organising a special Anniversary Dinner at St. Quentin’s, The Bear Hotel, Cowbridge, on Friday October 19th. We hope that former choristers will join us for this very special evening. For more information, contact our Secretary Jan Bolland on jandavid@live.co.uk or 01656 784180. Dominique Spearey

Deadline date for the October 2018 issues Saturday 15th September

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

Regular readers of this column will know that I do not care too much for digital photography, mainly because it is stored as an electronic code rather than a proper photographic negative. That is why I shoot my film productions on 16mm or 35mm film. Negatives, if looked after, can be brought out decades later and re-printed. But what if the electronic code of the digital image is lost or cannot be retrieved? Before I became a filmmaker, I spent ten years as a photojournalist, and shot mostly black & white stills. The negatives are still perfectly printable, and black & white has a look all of its own. So that set me thinking, and I have made a return to stills, specialising in 35mm and medium format black & white to support my movie documenting of local history. But it also presents an opportunity to photograph people in the present day, and with this in mind I have devised “Portraits at Work” for those who are interested in having a photographic record of them doing their occupation, whatever that might be, as well as standard black & white portraiture. Let me know if you are interested. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Medium format camera

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR The Choir has had a busy summer, performing in three weddings and a 50th wedding reception. We also gave a concert in the Law Faculty of Cardiff University. The concert was held to give the participants of an international negotiation competition an experience of Welsh culture. There were over a hundred in the audience from 26 countries and we were well appreciated. The Choir is now putting the finishing touches to the programme ahead of our annual celebrity concert to be held in the Grand Pavilion on 8th Sept. Our guest celebrities are the 4 Tunes and we look forward to sharing the stage with these accomplished singers. (Tickets can be purchased from the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl).

CÔR DYSGWYR PORTHCAWL – PORTHCAWL WELSH LEARNERS’ CHOIR During 2018 the main focus of the choir has been on competing in the National Eisteddfod, held in Cardiff Bay. The choir, led by Mrs Anne Brown, Musical Director, and experienced accompanists, Mrs Christine Goldsworthy and Mr Jeff Howard, competed in the Welsh Learners’ Choir category on 9th August. Their Ryan Davies medley delighted a most supportive audience at the Preliminary contest and they progressed to the final on stage. With live broadcast on S4C, every member enjoyed the whole experience of singing on the main stage at the Millennium Centre. The choir gained third place, receiving many favourable comments on their polished performance, smart appearance and adherence to the traditions and values of an Eisteddfod choir. The University of South Wales also issued an invitation to sing at their stand, located next to the Senedd building. With thousands of people waiting for the arrival of Tour de France winner, Geraint Thomas, the choir entertained an appreciative audience, with many singing along. The choir would like to thank Gilgal Baptist Church for their support again this year and friends and family who supported them wholeheartedly on the day. New members are always welcome. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Kenfig Hill’s own mega rock star and multiinstrumentalist, Jayce Lewis, has announced a headline tour. At the moment no Welsh dates have been slotted in. In the meantime, though, he has a brilliant new live video out from his album Million (Part 1) – check it out on his website. It’s good to see Cefn-based Phil Walters, former guitarist with the Guzzards, getting a new group together. I look forward to hearing them. Get your tickets quickly for Planet Rockstock at Trecco Bay on November 30th – December 2nd, which will feature Black Star Riders, Dead Daisies, Gun, Wayward Sons, Walter Trout and Bridgend’s Those Damn Crows. Good to catch up with my song writing partner Dale Williams who now lives in the Czech Republic. We did discuss releasing a “Best Of”, so watch this space. Finally, congratulations to Mat and the team on their 20th anniversary, and for giving me space to push original music and talent – something the local press and radio stations ignore, which is deplorable. If you write your own songs and you have a new CD or any gigs lined up, give me a call or a text and perhaps I can give you a plug. Sport reports KPC YOUTH & COMMUNITY CHARITY GOLF DAY 2018

KPC held their 20th Annual Charity Golf Day at the Grove Golf Club on Fri 22nd June, with an amazing 26 teams entering. It was great to see so many teams who’ve supported the charity over many years, as well as the new teams for 2018. It was also wonderful to have some golfers who actually played at KPC’s first Charity Golf Day 20 years ago - Ray Tucker (Fords), John Savile & Gareth Evans (Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club). Results from the day were: 1st Prize - Weldec (96), 2nd Prize - Andrew Singer 3 Team (Brian Nicholas/Stephen Bull/ Roger Watkins & Keith Wright) (95), 3rd Prize Barclays 1 (92). Longest Drive was won by Gareth Howells of Swim Co, with Nearest the Pin - Dean Matthews (Fords). The total number of Lost Balls was: 330(!) - with closest guess at 340 by Phil Westerner (Bridgend Masonic Golf). KPC would like to thank all teams who gave up their Friday to support them. Also thanks also to everyone who donated to their raffle/auction prizes or sponsored a hole - greatly appreciated! Big thanks to the fantastic “Lauren Jade & The Hats” for our evening entertainment, where we were also joined by the Mayor Cllr John McCarthy & Mayoress Mrs Judy McCarthy. Thanks also to Mark Jones of Cooperative Porthcawl for providing some welcome refreshments for the teams, and a special thanks to Barclays for match funding their fundraising again this year.

Summer is here and it’s time to get your outside space in order. Why not give us a call, and we can give you some great ideas to improve your home’s kerb appeal.

Why should you install a Resin Drive? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through it which means no puddles. Also with a slip resistant surface it provides better traction for tyres and gives more grip for when you walk on it, making your drive a safe place to be!
