STRANGE VISITORS TO OUR SHORES

Dear Editor Thousands of jellyfish-like creatures have washed up on Newton beach. The creatures, which are around two inches long, are pleustonic meaning they live partly in and partly out of the water. The Velella velella, known commonly as By-the-wind Sailors, have been left high and dry on Newton beach as a result of strong winds and storms far out to sea. Contrary to popular belief Velella velella are not jellyfish, but instead belong to the Cnidaria species, they are similar to jellyfish in that they use stinging cells on their tentacles which dangle below the water to catch their prey, mostly microscopic plankton, but this is in no way harmful to us as it cannot penetrate our skin. They are at the mercy of prevailing winds and can be subject to mass strandings on beaches, particularly in America. Strandings of this species in the UK are more common on Atlantic coasts like Cornwall and Devon, they are rarely found on Welsh beaches. Sadly when they reach the beach they are dead or dying and there is little that can be done. If they are taken back out to sea they will just wash up again. They are very strange things and they’re rare so people wonder what they are when they see them. I hope your readers find this interesting. Gary Williams, Laleston

Dear Editor, I’m sure readers of the Seaside Newsmay have been slightly bemused by the letter regarding the elusive clock at Rest Bay Lifeguard Station. I’m pleased to report we still have the clock in question. The clock originally came about as part of an informal discussion with a lifeguard who agreed that a clock on the lifeguard station would be a good idea, however in reality it isn’t practical with nowhere suitable to mount it. The design of the clock is not actually suited to use in an outdoor environment either and it can only actually be seen from a relatively short distance of approximately 25 metres away. We are grateful for the kind donation of the clock (as we are for all donations to our voluntary surf lifesaving club) and it has never been our intention to upset Ms. Davies. Since the lifeguard service has been contracted out by BCBC to the RNLI it would be difficult to make an expectation of their lifeguards to display the clock daily when the mounting and display of it has been problematic given the unforgiving harsh environment our lifeguard station is located. I have never spoken to Ms. Davies myself personally regarding the clock and am not sure who is the “head lifeguard” she refers to, however should she like the clock back or be able to find a more suitable place to use it please pass my contact details on. REMOVAL OF 225 BUS SERVICE TO PORT TALBOT

CARNIVAL 1969

Dear Editor, On 1st August First Cymru removed the 225 bus route from Porthcawl to Port Talbot. There is now no direct route west to Port Talbot. The daytime journey now entails taking the 63 bus to Pyle Cross. That could involve a lengthy wait as the X1 service from Bridgend to Port Talbot only runs every hour. In the future it will be a difficult journey for those wishing to shop in Swansea, or for those who have appointments at Port Talbot or Swansea hospitals. Also people who want to study at the Margam or Neath campus will find it almost impossible. From the other direction, people will not be able to spend a day in Porthcawl, thus having an impact on local trade . I contacted First Cymru to point out that I understood the financial constraints these days, but that consideration should be given to the effect on a town. Permanent removal of services would mean great difficulties for many people. Without a train service and the removal of the 225 bus in the day, Porthcawl is effectively being ‘cut off’ with only one major, direct bus route, the X2 service to Bridgend. Irene Collier, Porthcawl

HIGHS AND LOWS OF PORTHCAWL

SEAFRONT SUNSET

Dear Editor, On the 16th August my wife and I took a walk over to Rest Bay. Whilst walking along the coast we were lucky enough to sight a seal and get quite close, this was amazing. Unfortunately the positivity of this sight was soon ruined. On reaching the gate on the coastal footpath adjacent to Royal Porthcawl we were horrified by the amount of bags containing dog faeces. I contacted Bridgend Council regarding this matter - their response was that they are not responsible. I have now contacted Coastal Paths Wales, however, the irresponsible dog owners need to be aware that if caught their action could lead to them having a fine of £2500. It’s time such individuals are dealt with accordingly. Stephen Gale, Porthcawl

PHOTOS OF PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, Here are a few photos I took of Porthcawl recently. Thanks, Erin Richards (age 14), Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I notice you have a photo section. If you would care to publish this sunset captured recently at Porthcawl Seafront looking over to Rest bay, please feel free. Ian Hyman, Bridgend

SCHOOLS NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

This summer has been hugely successful for the Newton Primary School basketball team which finished the season unbeaten. The squad has showed a very high level of team spirit and commitment in weekly training and local matches. The team played consistently well every week to win the Porthcawl Schools League and also the Bridgend Basketball Blitz Cup competition. The final achievement came when the school won the Bridgend Championships beating the winners of the other leagues within the County Borough. The school has never achieved this before. The squad included Will Strading (Captain), Tom Tweedy, Spencer Morgan, Imran Azam, Blake Jones, Jay Sheen, Josie Lewis, Harriet Williams, Alina Biju, Bethan Owen, Lucy Griffiths and Grace Lloyd. We are very proud of this set of players and hope they will continue to play basketball as part of their journey through comprehensive school. Henley Jenkins Teacher / Team Coach

SCHOOLS ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

successfully and now have a secure bike shed thanks to Kenfig Trust. We held a grand opening, with Simon Richardson MBE cutting the ribbon. Our choir took part in a Christmas Service in Pisgah Chapel and sang for the Cornelly Pensioners. PC Steve has been a regular visitor to teach our children how to keep safe in life and on the internet. Our Year 6 leavers assembly was amazing! The class worked so hard to produce This is Your Life, with guests including past teachers, there were floods of tears, mainly through laughter, but there were some poignant moments, and we end our year by wishing all our leavers the very best of luck as they attend their chosen comprehensives in September. We will miss you all. AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL The end of the summer term at St Clare’s in Porthcawl was jam packed as always with activities, sporting events and trips. Of course, the undoubted highlight of the term was the school production of The Lion King, which was a roaring success. You can read all about it in our latest newsletter, which is available to download at http://stclares-school.co.uk/newsletters.html As we go to print, we are eagerly awaiting this year’s A-level and GCSE results, and will have more good news to share in the next edition. In the meantime, we would like to congratulate Elen Lloyd, our Deputy Head Girl, who has already accepted a place at Oxford to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. We are looking forward to welcoming more new faces into school on the first day of term with boys and girls from 2½ in our Nursery right up to 18 in our excellent Sixth Form. For more information about what St Clare’s can offer your son or daughter, please contact Holly Fowlkes, our Admissions & Marketing Officer, on (01656) 789966 or email her at holly.fowlkes@stclares-school.co.uk www.stclares-school.co.uk Simon Antwis, Headmaster Picture caption: Roaring success for St Clare’s

Our Estyn Inspection Report of 2013 was extremely positive and we were proud to read that: “One of the school’s strengths is the exceptional working relationship between teachers and pupils. The school has a strong ethos based on fairness and this creates a caring and disciplined environment.” “Transition work with partner primary schools is of the highest quality.” “At Key Stage 3, performance in English, Mathematics and Science has improved and overall performance is higher than modelled expectations.” “Nearly all pupils behave very well in class and around the school. They are ready to learn and participate well in lessons. They are courteous and relate well to one another, to their teachers and to other adults.” More recently: In the Chief Inspector’s Annual Report Porthcawl’s “Helping Hands” transition programme has been identified by Estyn as an area of “Outstanding Practice”.

POEMS THE SALE RAIL

GROWING OLDER

Oh I love a bargain Or anything reduced And when I see that blue cross sign I’m thoroughly seduced

I may have a shoogley shoulder, as well as a rickety knee That tells me I’m getting older, but is this all life has to be? For my faith, now is growing stronger, though the mountains seem steeper to me But my Saviour is with me each step of the way, for I’m made for eternity. So let us sing songs, ‘stead of moaning, And trust God we can take the next step For we’re learning to lean on the strength of his arm With his help we have no need to quit. So let’s thank God for glimpses of glory Though this climb ever upward must be God’s our peace and our joy, so we’ve no need to despair Yes, we’re made for eternity. Pauline Lewis Porthcawl

The broken zip, the faded shoe The little top too tight for you The purple bobbled faded top The blouse that’s much too low Racks and racks of junk and tat Brought in special from out the back But when I make my fortune The sale rail I’ll ignore I’m gonna give myself a treat and dress in Haute Couture! AS WE WALK ALONG THE SEASHORE As we walk along the seashore, Crushing the seashells into the sand, We walking along so slowly, Tightly holding one another’s hands. We talk about many subjects, About the weather, work and daily life, Walking so comfortably along, As a husband and wife. We speak about the holidays, We enjoyed many years ago, With loved ones who have since passed, As the waves crash in along the shore. The memories make us happy, Both our faces full of smiles, We continue slowly walking, Along the seashore for many miles. You must always talk about your loved ones, To keep their memories going on, For their soul is always with you, Only their body has gone. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

WALES Her hair cascades, glistening, like the tumbling spring melts of Snowdonia. Her eyes, grey, mystical, as the pools left stranded by the ebbing tide. Her skin as soft as the dew-blushed petals of a newly blooming daffodil. Her hands, strong, long-fingered, fine and delicate as the strings of any harp. Her breath is like the gentle breeze beneath the gossamer wings of a butterfly. She is as tall as the ancient oak that stands guard over wizard Merlin’s grave. Her grace and beauty hide a heart as fierce as any dragon, Waiting to be roused from sleep to once more fight the foe. She looks, and is, our hope, our pride, our passion. Judith Dickinson, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL’S OWN WONDER CANINE NAMED BAILEY There’s a dog called Bailey I’m sure you’ve seen who carries with care his cuddly toy when he goes for his daily stroll each day with Maureen. Bailey chooses each day which cuddly toy he’ll take while demonstrating parenting core traits, care, love and protection, especially keeping from the rain. Bailey and his toy generate warmth and smiles to all who see him, yes Burton and Hopkins may have Port Talbot on the map, however Bailey tops those due to being famous, but staying put. Bailey travels on the X2 with Maureen, where he puts his toy in an area where it’s clean, and frequently lovingly glances up at Maureen and vice versa, this is a joy for all bus travelers to have seen. Bailey is truly a credit to his owner Maureen who lovingly nurtures little Bailey and washes his five cuddy toys, as each one goes out, if picked for their daily walk and like all Pothcawlians hopes it doesn’t rain. So fascinated by Bailey I asked for permission to write a poem about Bailey and his toy. Our meeting took place outside Stokes fruit shop which was handy because it rained! So I asked Baily, “Could I write a small poem about you?” Bailey said, “Might as well as you write about crows, egrets, mermaids, and even talking custard creams! But only as long as you mention my loving owner Maureen”. Bailey also said, “Mention my cuddly toy”, to which I replied, “But I don’t know his name!” “Bend down and ask him”, said Bailey. I answered, “People will see me and think I’m odd”. He quickly responded, “Well they have watching you talking to me for 20 minutes and I’m a dog!” Alun Davies, Porthcawl

News HAVE YOUR SAY ON RECYCLING PROPOSALS How we deal with our rubbish is always a sensitive subject, and it’s often not easy to adjust when changes are made. But changes to the current system are now inevitable if councils throughout Wales are to hit the new target of 70 per cent by 2020 and avoid heavy fines for not recycling enough household waste. A new system will begin on 1st April 2017, and the council will soon be in a position to clarify things like who our waste partner will be, what equipment households will be given, what sort of items can be recycled, how the proposed nappy collection will work, etc. As the scheme is designed to boost what is recycled and cut down on what needs to go into a black bag, households will be restricted to using two bags a fortnight. Because we want this to be as fair as possible, the council is currently running a consultation which asks for people’s thoughts on whether larger households and households with ash fires should be able to put out additional black bags. You have until 10th October 2016 to give your views, so I hope you will do so by visiting your local library or www.bridgend.gov. uk/consultation Councillor Mel Nott OBE Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

FOR THOSE IN PERIL ON THE SEA SUMMER at the seaside is a British tradition and an economic lifeline for Porthcawl. Thousands of holidaymakers pack the town but it is also a time of potential danger – as we have already seen this year with tragedies at Barmouth and Mwnt. The coastline is fabulous and so are the volunteers that keep us all safe – those who run our Lifeboat Station in Porthcawl, and those who patrol our beaches as lifeguards. That’s why I am supporting the RNLI’s Respect the Water campaign. When we are at our most carefree, the sea can be at its most cruel. Porthcawl residents have more reason than most to understand this. Plans are already in hand to mark the 70th anniversary next April of the largest loss of life seen along our coast – the sinking of the SS Samtampa which had run aground at Sker Point during a Force 11 storm. Sadly, the eight man crew of the Mumbles Lifeboat – Edward Prince of Wales – also perished. In all, 47 lives were lost that day and there are still some people in Porthcawl who witnessed this terrible event. They will never forget and neither should we.

BRIDGEND’S NEW VOLUNTEER CENTRE SWAPPING THE CLASSROOM FOR KENFIG DUNES As this month sees the start of the new school term, the Bridgend Outdoor Schools Project is inviting teachers to swap classrooms for a unique learning experience at Kenfig National Nature Reserve. Teachers have worked directly with the council’s Reach Rural Development Team, Natural Resources Wales and educational consultants Think, Learn, Challenge to devise an online resource pack for schools. It means that children can learn and have lots of fun in an ‘outdoors classroom’ environment while exploring the sand dunes and the Nature Reserve’s other habitats. It’s a great way to engage with children and encourage them to explore the outdoors while learning about issues such as biodiversity and nature, and also encourages more people to pay a visit to Kenfig National Nature Reserve, too. The online pack is also available for families to download and enjoy, so why not make a trip out of it? The Reserve has benefitted from a number of other recent improvements including new signage, information boards and of course the colourful mural at the visitor centre that demonstrates some of the wonderful things to be found at Kenfig. Search for ‘Kenfig’ at www.naturalneighbourhoods.com to download one of the packs and find out more. Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones has opened a new Volunteer Centre in Bridgend town centre managed by Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO). The centre offers up-to-date information, advice and guidance to people who are looking for volunteering opportunities and to voluntary organisations or community groups looking to recruit volunteers. Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones said: “Having this information hub on volunteering in Bridgend town centre will certainly encourage more people to pop in and look at the wide range of opportunities available. It was great to see for myself this useful resource and to talk to the BAVO team about their centre. Volunteering can be hugely rewarding and any spare time that people give is hugely appreciated.” Open Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm, the Volunteer Centre is based at 2 Queen Street in Bridgend town centre. BAVO’s Chief Executive Heidi Bennett, said: “Whatever your motivation, whatever your interests, why not pop in and have a cuppa and a chat. There is no obligation to sign up to anything, you’ll just receive lots of information on options for you to take away and think about.” For further details call BAVO’s Volunteer Centre, T: 01656 660372. ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE FUNDS MND GENE BREAKTHROUGH

TURNING EMPTY HOUSES INTO NEW HOMES

In the summer of 2014 the internet was awash with short videos of countless people and many celebrities partaking in the ice bucket challenge. Who could forget seeing famous faces such as Anna Wintour, David Beckham and even George W Bush being doused in ice water. The premise was simple, the same numb feeling you get when ice water is thrown on you is a symptom of the disease ALS or Motor Neurone’s Disease as it is more commonly known in the UK. The aimof the short clips were to raise money and awareness of this devastating disease. Quite remarkably over a 30 day period the campaign managed to raise a staggering $100m. I am delighted to see that exciting new research has been published revealing a greater understanding of potential causes of motor neurone disease. The scientific journal Nature Genetics published two research papers detailing specific genes that may increase the risk of a person developing motor neurone disease. Much of this research was funded through the money raised by the Ice Bucket challenge. The money raised has made a real difference in helping to understand possible causes of the disease.

Did you know that the Welsh Government offers interest-free loans of up to £25,000 for residents who want to turn an empty property into a new home? The ‘Houses into Homes’ scheme makes loans available so that empty properties or commercial buildings can be brought back into use as residential accommodation for either sale or rent. It also provides loans that can be used for the conversion of larger premises into flats. Since 2013, a total of 13 loans have been awarded and 25 units have been brought back into use as a result. The main stipulation to be eligible to use the scheme is that the loan must be used to renovate, improve or convert a property, which is then sold or rented out. The owners cannot use it to ‘do up’ a property and then live in it themselves, and the property must be included on the council’s empty homes register and have been vacant for a minimum of six months. The loans are interest-free and have to be paid back within two or three years depending on whether the property is sold or let. You can find out more by calling 01656 643521 or emailing lindsay.dovey@bridgend.gov.uk

HARBOURSIDE NEWS As many readers will be aware, Stuart Bentley – Secretary of The Welsh Surf Federation has been instrumental in the inception of the Harbourside project. This week, in Rio de Janeiro, it was announced that member nations of the Olympic Movement voted in favour of the inclusion of Surfing in the Olympic Games 2020, in Tokyo. This is fantastic news for the sport of surfing and indeed for the Maritime Centre. The proposed Maritime Centre will not only house The Welsh Surf Federation’s HQ, but will also provide a Centre of Excellence for surfing and watersports in Wales. It’s entirely possible that our next Olympic Champion could come from Wales – and what a fantastic prospect that would be! It’s a very exciting time for Welsh surfing and we will keep you informed and updated here and on the WSF Social Media sites. Our SeaQuest Coastal Science & Discovery division has had a busy summer delivering beach events. We also hold regular talks on local marine life, with entrance fees starting from just £2. Our Sea Bus Mobile Aquarium is now available for schools/nurseries/ group sessions. Details of future events are on our website: www.porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk. Please take a look. Jayne Bowden

FEATURES SOROPTIMIST COFFEE MORNING

Bridgend Soroptimist Club held a coffee morning on 15th July at the home of club secretary Marjorie Page. The event raised the sum of £248 for the Meru Womens’ Garden Project in Nepal. The goal is to provide women in that area with the means to grow their own food products and sell on any surplus, which will enable them to expand. This project is currently being supported by all Soroptimist clubs in the UK and will run for a year. Members and guests enjoyed a magnificent array of cakes and pastries and were joined by two young gentleman pupils visiting Wales from Estonia and Spain. They are studying English and will be taking home some good memories of the Soroptimist movement both in Wales and throughout the World. Attached photo shows a group of some of the members attending and President Sue. Eileen Bayley

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM We speak of Porthcawl, as if it has existed for centuries. Yet, it has only been officially recognized as a place, since 1848. The building of a tramway to Port Call point, in 1828, to export coal from the Llynfi Valley, initiated its growth. By 1851, Porthcawl had a population of 959, including 31 sailors aboard a vessel in the harbour. Nottage and Newton boast of a much richer history. Nottage is the older, with its roots in the Saxon period; whilst Newton, is referred to in 1147 as ‘Nova Villam in Margan,’ by Norman, William of Gloucester. By the 17th century, the fertile soil of Nottage had encouraged agricultural development in the area, with the distribution of land resulting in the lanes we have today. Moor Lane, Malpas Lane etc. Newton looked to the sea for its economy. William Leyshon, a farmer mariner, traded so successfully with Bristol that he was able to build a large house near the Newton harbour, which would become known as ‘The Red House.’ Yet windows were few, due to window tax. THE TALBOT Despite the typical Summer weather, rain did not stop play, and we all enjoyed our day trip to the Gwili Steam Railway & Carmarthen. We had Welsh elevenses (coffee and bara brith, with butter!) on the train, and when we arrived at the journey’s end, we were able to visit the engine, to blow the whistle. Our next day trip is to Worcester Event House for a two course carvery lunch and entertainment, arriving back home by 6pm. Still a few seats available. An update on our old kitchen; it has been fitted out, painted and ready to use by all the groups and functions that want to make light refreshments. Looking forward, we have already planned our Christmas Showtime, and taking reservations for Saturday 10th December when we will have a meal, live entertainment, and hopefully a laugh or two. This is the event where you bring your own liquid refreshment; we provide the wine glasses. And going into 2017, seats have been reserved for next May to see Joseph and his Amazing Technicoloured Coat at the Millennium Centre. Please call 01656 739754 for further information on any of the above. Cheryl Butcher The Talbot

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Contrary to popular opinion, the man from Nazareth wasn’t always ‘gentle Jesus meek and mild.’ On many occasions we can read in the Bible of his indignation – his anger at something unjust or unworthy. Personally, I like the fact that Jesus felt angry about things that were wrong or unfair. However, we must be careful not to use indignation – which is one of life’s strongest forces – as an excuse to justify our own narrowness of opinion. Often, it seems that indignation is over-used or used for the wrong causes. Ours has been called ‘a culture of complaint.’ We complain early and often. Indignation is often put to work in the service of our own ‘small self.’ Jesus was indignant, not on his own behalf, but for others who couldn’t stand up for themselves - for children, for women, and for the most marginalised in his society. In expressing his indignation, Jesus challenged the conventional wisdom; even surprising his disciples by telling them that children could teach them a lot. On behalf of what causes ought we be experiencing and expressing true indignation today? God Bless, Rev Lewis Rees Minister with Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

FEATURES A CHILDISH AFTERNOON WITH BRIDGEND LIONS

The photo shows President OJ Paton (pink check shirt) with members of Bridgend Lions Club and their partners who recently visited the West Wales Museum of Childhood at Pen-ffynnon, Llangeler, Carmarthenshire. After enjoying refreshments in the tea room the group enjoyed a talk and entertainment given by owners Paul and Hilary and a trip down Memory Lane where there were 10,000 exhibits for all to see. The main exhibition hall ‘Oriel Amser’ (Gallery of Time) features a timeline that takes you through the 20th Century with toys, world events and household items too. There are also themed displays of dolls, dolls houses, prams, soft toys and many others. Lion Nigel John (on the right hand-side of the photo) is a volunteer at Porthcawl Museum and was pleased to purchase some tiny milk bottles (a third of a pint) to take back to Porthcawl. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Few of us study much any more, unless we have an exam coming up. Instead, most of us would rather receive our information in small, easy to swallow chunks. If something takes more than a couple of minutes to explain then it seldom keeps our attention for long. However, God frequently does wow us with moments of beauty, insight and emotional overload. But in the pauses between these moments, learning about God is more like hard work. Any scientist will tell you that behind every ‘Eureka!’ lies thousands of hours of labour. So it is too with becoming a person of faith. It takes work with the world, and ourselves, and the lives of the people around us. It takes long engagement and focused attention and minute noticing. It takes study. So here’s our challenge. Take a few minutes every day to study the great works of God. It might be the Bible, or the seashore, or your children, or something else. Pay attention and really learn what God has done. See if you’re not a better person at the end because of it. God Bless, Lewis Rees Minister with Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel Seaside News | 32

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hi folks, in Romans 10 v 15 Paul talked about how beautiful it is when someone brings the gospel of peace, and glad tidings of good things. I would suggest the world as a whole needs to know peace. I think we could see this in three ways. Firstly, it is about having peace with God. If God is our creator then having a relationship with him would seem to be the foundation of our very existence - thus bringing peace and harmony with him. I can say first hand that it works. Secondly, that we have peace with one another. If the world knew Gods kind of love and peace then it would flow to one another more. Thirdly, that we would have peace with ourselves. Many people don’t have peace with themselves. They carry guilt or shame or regret. We have all made mistakes. Some worse than others. But God is a God of redemption and seeks to redeem what can be redeemed. This includes you if you will let him. He can bring peace in you as you seek him with humility, godly sorrow and true repentance. I have experienced all of these and know them as an ongoing reality in my life. Look for God as he is looking for you! Blessings, Neil Harvey 07870 168154

ALL CHANGE FOR PORTHCAWL ROTARY Recently, the Rotary Club of Porthcawl held its annual Handover Evening at the Atlantic Hotel. Outgoing President, Jeff Perren, handed over the chain of office to the clubs new President, Robert Aubrey. Although the evening was enjoyed by all who attended (including Mayor Rob Lee and Mayoress Ann Lee), it was with a little poignancy that the new leadership team came into being. The outgoing President, Jeff Perren, began his tenure of office last year as the Club was mourning the death of club secretary, Anne Jarrett. Also, early this year, the club was doubly saddened by the sudden passing of Rowena Millward, who was to have become President Elect at the Handover. Jeff and his outgoing team are to be commended for the quiet, dignified way they dealt with the emotional and practical issues which ensued. Both members will be sadly missed by fellow Rotarians, who are grateful to former President, Sandra Townsend, who has stepped in to become the new President Elect and will begin her office next year. FEATURES PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS I will not mention the weather this time, as I seem to put a jinx on it when I do! Maybe an Indian summer now? There I have mentioned it again! Our last meeting was in July when Rev. Clive Williams entertained us with ‘The Music of Handel’, illustrated on the piano. We always learn new things about the composers from Rev. Williams, which is why we keep inviting him back. An excellent lunch was enjoyed at the Masons Arms, Aberkenfig, and as I write this our cream tea is only a few days away. Eating is high on the agenda for most guild members as you can see! Our meeting this month will be a celebration of Harvest with a good tea (eating again) and entertainment by members. Do come along to All Saints Church Hall at 2pm on 14th September. You will be very welcome. Dorothy Thomas Tel: (01656) 772157

LIFE WITH THE PORTHCAWL LIONS

The Vintage Fair and Classic Car Show held recently was a great success, with around 160 classic cars and motorbikes on display, plenty of stalls and very many visitors to enjoy the good weather. The fair was opened by the mayor of Porthcawl and, after a very busy day, ended with the presentation of the shield for best car being presented to Mr. Barrett from Ammanford in his Ford Classic, and the award for best motorbike being presented to Dave Emanuel. The £2,000 raised on the day will go to help, mostly local, charities. At the first meeting of the month Porthcawl Lions were able to present representatives of DASH and Ty Elis with chequers for £230, the money raised from the club’s Midsummer Madness Pub Crawl. The car boot sales every Sunday at Porthcawl Rugby Club, and the Book Sales every other Saturday in John Street, continue for the immediate future and there will be a membership open day in Trinity Church on Saturday 17th September. Well worth a visit if you want to find out all about Lions, who they are, how they raise money, the charities they help and all the other things they do. Meanwhile thank all of you who support the club’s work and please keep helping us to help others. John Cosson

FEATURES PORTHCAWL CARNIVAL REVIEW

The carnival was blessed with beautiful weather and throngs of people lined the whole route to watch the parade. The ‘floats’ were imaginatively designed and colourful and particularly, the Ancient Briton entertained the crowds with music. We were also entertained by the Pre Hee Men, Hats for Fun, South Cymru Sapphires Marching Band and the comedy marching band - Westside Allstars. On the packed carnival field we were further entertained by Joseph Peace Fire Stunts and a session by the youth of Porthcawl Rock Club. The children were entertained by Hats for Fun Magical Workshop. Local charities and good causes exhibited their wares on the field. The organisers wish to thank the local business community for advertising in the programme, Road Hauliers for the supply of lorries, our band of volunteers for ensuring the event was a success and more importantly the public for turning out in thousands to support the event and for their kind donations. Our donations are distributed to causes within our community. The winners of the procession were as follows: Children Float 1st Prize Porthcawl Sea Cadets 2nd Adran y Urdd; Adult Float 1st prize Happy Valley Caravan park 2nd Porthcawl Community Orchestra; Walkers - Sand Witches. NEW DISTANT DWARF PLANET BEYOND NEPTUNE Astronomers have discovered a new dwarf planet orbiting in the disc of small icy bodies beyond Neptune. The new object is about 700 km in diameter and has one of the largest orbits for a dwarf planet. Designated 2015 RR245, it was found with ‘Outer Solar System Origins Survey’ (OSSOS), which uses computers to hunt for the Images. The team was presented with a bright object moving at such a slow rate that it was clearly at least 120 times further from the Sun than the Earth. The vast majority of dwarf planets like RR245 were destroyed or thrown from the Solar System as the giant planets moved out to their present positions. RR245 is one of the few that survived to the present day, along with Pluto and Eris, the largest known dwarf planets. RR245 now circles the Sun among the remnant population of tens of thousands of much smaller trans-Neptunian bodies, most of which orbit unseen. After hundreds of years further than 80 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, RR245 is travelling towards its closest approach at five billion km (34 AU), which it will reach around 2096. MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI

Our ‘Afternoon Tea’ held on Saturday 6th August in Blandy Hall, was a resounding success. There was a superb selection of cakes and sandwiches available, all made by the members. It was lovely to see and hear so many members enjoying themselves, the chattering was non-stop. All members were extremely happy to welcome back Margaret Aylen, who attended along with her husband Graham. It was great to see her looking so well and back amongst all her friends. On a sad note, we have to remember our dear friend Joan Rule, she was a member of Laleston WI for almost 40 years. Joan passed away on 24th July after a short illness and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. All members of Laleston WI send their sincere condolences to Brian and family. All committee members worked extremely hard to make the day a success and deserve a big ‘thank you’. New members are always welcome, why not come and join us. For further information call Diane on (01656) 656600. Dawn Storie

On the 9th of August Mynydd Cynffig WI went on their summer trip, where we went to the Royal Mint in Llantrisant. It was called The Royal Mint Experience. The guide we had told us we would never look at coins the same after this tour, and he was right. The number of coins produced each year is in excess of 90 million. And the mint produces coins for over 60 countries worldwide. Numbers that are mind blowing. A nice cafe and of course the gift shop completed the day. We bumped into friends of ours Glyn Hir WI who had come there on a trip themselves. Summer is in full swing but our thoughts turn to autumn and all that entails. Our September meeting is on the 13th and is in our usual venue The Talbot Centre, at 2.30pm. We are having a talk on the Huston Bros. by Dean Powell, which should prove interesting? We have Christmas dinners to organise as well as our Tea Party. It is going to be a busy few months, but we will enjoy being busy. Call in and meet us - tea and biscuits always available. Legal

Inheritance

RIGHTS OF STEP PARENTS There are, in this complicated world, a great many stepparents. If you are one, do you know your legal position in terms of what you can and cannot authorise when it comes to your step children? A step-parent, even if married to a parent of children, does not acquire Parental Responsibility for a child automatically. Parental Responsibility is the bundle of rights and duties relating to a child which include providing clothing, a home, an education and making sure no harm comes to the child. The mother of a child always has Parental Responsibility. Since 1st December 2003, an unmarried father who is present when his child’s birth is registered, i.e. is on the birth certificate, does acquire Parental Responsibility. Fathers without Parental Responsibility are able to acquire it through a formal agreement registered with the authorities or through a Court Order. Each person with Parental Responsibility has to sign the Agreement. This is often the natural parents and any other individuals who have acquired Parental Responsibility since the birth of the child. Since 5th December 2005, step parents can also acquire Parental Responsibility through a formal agreement or Court Order. Other Orders which result in Parental Responsibility to a step-parent are a Child Arrangements Order which regulates where a child will live and gives Parental Responsibility until the child is 16. A Parental Responsibility Order however endures until the child’s 18th birthday. Following the Civil Partnership Act 2004 coming into force on the 5th December 2005, same sex partners in a registered Civil Partnership are also able to acquire Parental Responsibility by formal agreement or Court Order. On acquiring Parental Responsibility, a step-parent has the same duties and responsibilities as any other individual, including a natural parent with Parental Responsibility. An inheritance can never compensate for the death of a partner or family member. And, unfortunately, inheritance claims can cause problems, for example, if someone believes they aren’t receiving their fair share of a person’s estate. Even more difficult and upsetting inheritance problems can arise if a person was financially dependent on the deceased or if the executors of a will are accused of not acting properly. Claiming an inheritance is usually straightforward if you are named in the will as a beneficiary. The executors take control of all the deceased’s assets, pay off any debts and distribute the inheritances to the beneficiaries according to the terms of the will. As a beneficiary, you do not normally need to claim your inheritance or pay any inheritance tax – the executors should deal with this. You may, however, need to be patient. Administering an estate can be time-consuming and it often takes several months before a beneficiary receives an inheritance. Family inheritance becomes problematic if there is no will or if you feel the will was unfair. If there is no will, family inheritance entitlements are governed by the rules of intestacy. Depending on the amounts involved, any spouse (or civil partner) is entitled to inherit at least part of the estate, with the remainder split among the nearest relatives. With or without a will, family inheritances may seem unfair. Particular problems can arise if a couple were living together (without actually being married or in a civil partnership), if there were previous relationships or stepchildren or if a will unexpectedly favours one child over another. Spouses, civil partners, former spouses or civil partners, cohabiting partners, children and any financial dependents may be able to make a claim for reasonable financial provision – even if the will (or the rules of intestacy) specifies a smaller inheritance or no inheritance at all. Inheritance disputes can occur in other situations. For example, a will can be invalid if it was drawn up under undue pressure or if the testator subsequently married. Individual bequests in the will may be invalid. For example, if the bequest is unclear or if an inheritance has been left to one of the witnesses. Disputes can also occur if executors act improperly, either by mistake (eg misinterpreting the will) or deliberately. Inheritance claim disputes, like other legal disputes, can be complex, time-consuming and costly. Whether you are a beneficiary or not, if you are not getting the inheritance to which you believe you are entitled you should take legal advice. Douglas Jones Mercer Solicitors Tel: 01656 772211

Finance CHANGES TO INTEREST RATES The Bank of England’s decision to cut interest rates to 0.25% was not welcomed by savers who are seeing their current scarce amount of interest cut even further. Albeit it this blow has been softened slightly by the changes in taxation of savings earlier in the year. This was followed by Santander cutting the rate of interest on their popular 1,2,3 account by half. It leaves the average saver with a dilemma of where to turn to generate additional income – which is where we are able to assist. Other issues that are rearing their head is the decision to apply taper relief on pension contributions. If you are a high earner then as opposed to being able to claim tax relief on making contributions you could find yourself having to pay a sizeable tax liability, and then also be taxed a second time when eventually extracting these funds. Advice around these pension issues are essential especially with goal posts seeming to move constantly. We understand that people find much of the jargon used within the financial industry and extracting the important information can be difficult and time-consuming. We help you translate current events and and bring out hidden facts in seemingly endless product literature. So if you are looking to understand the implications of interest rate falls, or indeed the ever changing regulation around pension, then we’ll discuss how each issue effect you and lay it down in plain and simple English. If you have any issues at all then please feel free to contact me on 029 20 508000. Ian Davies Bartholemew Hawkins Ltd 01656 347000

TAKE NO CHANCES – BE SENSIBLE I recently took a call from someone who had just lost their job. This gentleman, married with 3 children, was rightly panicking over the fact that he would not be able to pay his mortgage, as well as several other bills and he could think of no way to get out of the situation other than find another similarly paid job – easier said than done. Housing Charity SHELTER has just issued its annual report highlighting this issue, in which its research concluded that one in three families could not pay their mortgage for more than one month if they found themselves out of work, a staggering and stark reality, due to lack of savings. Now, putting savings together when you have a family to support and when income seems to go out quicker than it comes in, is not an easy thing to achieve. However, there are affordable policies that will pay you a decent income if you lose your job – keeping you afloat until a new job is found. I never cease to wonder why it is that people will happily pay their car insurance, pet insurance, house insurance and others, yet they don’t insure their income, which is the very thing that supports everything else. The ‘it’ll never happen to me’ attitude really doesn’t work and everyone needs to take a look at exactly what their situation would be if they lost their job. We can help guide you towards a solution. Ask for quotes on policies that will pay you an income, at a level that you can afford. You certainly cannot afford to ignore the issue – and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how little you pay for the benefit you get. Seaside News | 42

And with the new Rugby and Football seasons about to kick off, yes, you guys can get cover for things that could stop you working, like a broken leg or other injury – you don’t have to actually lose your job to get income protection, being unable to work due to accident can be covered. Call us on 01656 782545 and we’ll be help all we can – go on, take no chances, be sensible. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545

PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY Problem Many of our clients are concerned to make sure that their family will be financially secure in the event of their untimely deaths. Case Study and action taken: We calculated the level of appropriate cover that our clients required. They had 2 very young children and a £100,000 20 year mortgage and our recommendations were: • Decreasing Term Assurance arranged on a joint life/first death basis for a 20 year term to ensure the mortgage loan would be repaid in full in the event of death. • A Family Income Benefit plan for both parents that would pay a tax free monthly income to the surviving spouse. We recommended they take this out over an 18 year term to coincide with their youngest child reaching the age of 21, as they hoped that the children would no longer be financially dependent by then and in employment. The total premiums were approximately £30 per month which provided them with £100,000 of decreasing term cover over 20 years and the Family Income Benefit cover of a tax free annual income of £30,000 over an 18 year term. BRIDGEND FLOWER CLUB Bridgend Flower Club extend a warm welcome to you. We have our first demonstration of the new 2016/17 programme on Thursday 22nd September, doors open 6.30pm for 7pm start. Our demonstrator is Sharon Dower and her title is ‘Natures Cast Offs’. We meet at St Mary’s Church Hall on Ewenny Road, Bridgend. We enjoy very relaxed and friendly practice evenings, also on a Thursday. Please ring Paula our Club Secretary on (01656) 661793 for more information. Come along and learn a new skill, we would love to meet you. Virginia Morgan

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB September is traditionally the Harvest Month and it’s good to reap the result of all the work that goes into gardening - be it a small or large garden. Runner beans, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, courgettes, all the root vegetables, cabbages etc. Most gardeners are pleased with their harvest. Hopefully, members will be considering which to exhibit in our annual show on Saturday 3rd September - the more entries there are the better the show. The show schedule is well presented and covers fruit and vegetables, pot plants, flower arranging, arts and crafts, photography, cake-making, and preserves. There will be a barbeque and welsh cakes cooked on site, also craft stalls and cake stall. Open at 2pm after the judging. At Cliff Cottage, home to the Laleston Gardening Club, building work has progressed. We now have a state of the art fire door, all the old uneven concrete paths have been dug up and replaced

- making it safer for our members and visitors alike. Laleston Gardening Club is most grateful to Suncredit Solar Farm, BAVO and Laleston Community Council for their support and financial help. These improvements will benefit the whole community. Gwen Bradford

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB September is a lovely month, the garden is relaxing (and so can you) the never-ending battle to keep your plants deadheaded and watered has eased – still there are plenty of jobs to be done! Having coaxed your plants through summer, it’s time to get ready for next season. This is a good time of year to plant new perennials, as the soil is still moist and warm enough for the plants roots to settle in before winter hits us (happy thought). Also, relocate any evergreen shrubs you’re not happy with, they won’t mind honest! Lift potatoes and onions this month, spuds need to be stored in a cool dark place; otherwise they turn green and become poisonous. Did you know - The Victorian gardener Rev. Charles Wolley came up with a great idea to get rid of stinging nettles, he planted ‘Polygonum sieboldii’ which later became called Japanese knot weed – some choice Eh! We have a coach trip to Malvern Autumn Show on the 25th September. Contact me if you would like to come – fab day out! By the way it’s time to pot up hyacinths for Christmas – just thought I’d cheer you up! Chris Early earlycefn@btinternet.co.uk

Health SUGAR IS A KEY CONTRIBUTOR TO CANCER

DRY & CRACKED HEELS

The fact that sugar and obesity are linked to an increased risk of cancer is now becoming well-recognised. Obesity has also been linked to an increased risk of death from all causes. Most people who over-eat also tend to eat many sugar-laden foods, which promotes elevated blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. So over-eating sugary foods equates to a doublewhammy in terms of cancer risk, compared to over-eating whole, unprocessed fare. In fact, recent research has identified sugar as the top contributor to the worldwide cancer surge. According to a report on the global cancer burden, published in 2014, obesity is responsible for an estimated 500,000 cancer cases worldwide each year. The reason for this is because cancer cells are primarily fuelled by the burning of sugar anaerobically. Without sugar, most cancer cells simply lack the metabolic flexibility to survive. Normal, healthy cells have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from using glucose to using ketone bodies from dietary fats. Most cancer cells lack this ability so when you reduce net carbs (total carbs minus fibre), you effectively starve the cancer. This is why nutritional ketosis appears to be so effective against cancer. Read more at: www.mercola.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

When the skin around the heels becomes thickened or dry, it loses its suppleness and elasticity and can crack and split under simple pressures. Cracked heels, otherwise known as ‘heel fissures’ can be unsightly, painful and in many cases lead to bleeding cracked heels. Causes: * Walking around barefoot or in footwear such as flip-flops or open backed sandals can dry out the feet; * Increased weight can lead to increased pressure on the heels causing callus (hard skin). With increased weight, the heel is also required to expand more and can often crack more readily; * Standing for long periods of time at work or home, especially on hard surfaces * Unhygienic conditions as well as fungal and bacterial infections. Treatments: * A pumice stone or paddle file can be used to reduce the thickness of the hard skin in less severe cases; * A heel balm or urea based moisturiser can be applied to help increase the elasticity of the skin on your heels and decrease the occurrence of cracks; * Contact your foot health professional who can safely remove the dead skin and provide you with a treatment plan. VASCULAR DEMENTIA

CREATING A MORE POSITIVE & MINDFUL LIFE FOR OURSELVES

Dementia is a term to describe a group of symptoms, which may include memory loss, confusion, changes in mood and difficulty doing everyday tasks. There are many types of dementia, the most common being Alzheimer’s disease. Vascular dementia is the second most common cause of dementia, affecting approximately 150,000 people in the UK. Sometimes this is caused by a stroke, and sometimes it is due to changes in the tiny blood vessels in the brain. Vascular dementia is sometimes referred to as Vascular Cognitive Impairment, which includes a range of symptoms from mild to severe. Symptoms can include slowed thinking, personality changes or changes in attention. Vascular dementia is under researched compared to Alzheimer’s disease, but at Swansea University we are conducting research into vascular dementia and are examining how vision and attention and slowed thinking affects people with this disease. We are looking for healthy volunteers 18-30 or over 50 years of age, to have their attention and reaction times tested. We will compare these with the results of those who have vascular dementia. Being more mindful in our lives, involves being more aware of the thoughts that come and go on a daily basis. Every day, we have thousands of thoughts and most of them are meaningless and many of them are negative. They are just thoughts, so let them come, acknowledge that they are there, and let them go. The more aware we become of these thoughts, the less power they have over our lives, and the more power we have. We ‘can’ create a healthier, happier and more mindful life for ourselves by being more present about our current life. When we focus on the here and now, no matter what is going on around us, we allow more positive experiences and circumstances to enter our lives. Spending time, every day, being very present in what you are doing, will begin to improve our quality of life. Focusing just on what you are doing ‘in the moment’, will calm your mind and stop the constant, and often, overwhelming flow of thoughts. Next time you are doing something simple, like taking a shower, focus on all the sensations present in that experience and forget any other thoughts. This will free your mind and create a sense of calm and peace. Suzanne Williams

Arts COR BRO OGWR CELEBRATES WELSH MUSIC

In spite of distinctly cool weather, Cor Bro Ogwr created a very warm atmosphere for the audience with their summer concert. The first half celebrated a Welsh miscellany, featuring a number of arrangements of well-known songs by our conductor, EdwardRhys Harry. He had composed a new work – ‘Don’t go Chasing Shadows’ to commemorate the Aberfan disaster 50 years ago this October. Dedicated to ‘his friends at Cor Bro Ogwr’, it was a moving tribute and we were proud to sing its premiere. The British Sinfonietta produced an amazing sound as it accompanied the choir in Karl Jenkins’ ‘Stabat Mater’, music that stretches both voices and orchestra. A late cancellation by our mezzo soloist, due to illness, saw our soprano, Angharad Davies, kindly stepping in to help out with some mezzo singing too. It was a pleasure to see All Saints’ Church so full; the Mayors of Porthcawl, Bridgend and Mayoress of Cowbridge all attended, while Canon Masson manned the interval bar. In September our new Musical Director, Rosie Howarth, begins a new chapter with us. We look forward to our first concert with her in December. Dominique Spearey www.cor-bro-ogwr.com

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Exclusive to the magazine and all the rock fans out there – I’ve got the line-up for this year’s Rockstock Festival that takes place at Trecco Bay on 2nd, 3rd and 4th December! The hot news is that Saturday night (3rd) will be headlined by Steve Harris’s British Lions. The group is Steve’s side project when he’s not playing bass with perhaps the biggest band on the planet, Iron Maiden, so it’s a huge catch for Porthcawl. Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash will be the support act. Friday Seaside News | 50

night’s bill is topped by The Dead Daisies which has featured members of Guns N’ Roses, Whitesnake and Mötley Crüe. Also on the bill will be Tyketto, and Motorheads’ Phil Campbell, while the next big thing, Black Stone Cherry, heads Sunday night. Check the Planet Rock website for tickets as it’s always a sell-out. Thanks for all the calls, texts, etc, about last month’s missing column, but rumours of my death were hugely exaggerated! It was down to deadlines, and me being busy working on my own resurrected music career. Don’t worry, I’m out and about checking your bands so keep the music news coming. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW The digital age has brought with it an assumption that anyone can now be a filmmaker – just by going out and buying the latest gadget. A quick glance on YouTube or Facebook provides ample evidence that many people consider themselves proficient in film production, merely by waving their camera, or device, in the general direction of the action, but what they mostly lack is story-telling ability and technique. Just like many home movies of the sixties and seventies, they are amateurish. So where do they go wrong? Handholding is very popular, but unless you’re good at it, a solid support is better. Most professionals still use a tripod, even for lightweight digital cameras, because it makes for a stable image. Telling any story visually needs planning and thought, with establishing shots and close-ups used to set the scene and show essential detail. Only pan and tilt when you have to, otherwise let the action run through the frame. Like everything else, there is a right way and a wrong way. Am I being old-fashioned? Maybe, but try looking at some of the newsreels from the past – they may be dated, but they knew what they were doing and did it well. Arts ART COMPETITION BRINGS COLOUR TO PORTHCAWL THIS SUMMER

Art Challenge Wales, the oneday, ‘en plein air’ (outdoor) art competition saw over 100 artists take to the streets of the town this July in a colourful art spectacle that drew in hundreds of spectators to view artists live at work. A growing and vibrant cultural annual event in the area, the exacting competition challenges artists, both professional and amateur, to complete a piece of work that encapsulates the spirit of the town and seaside in just eight hours.

A non-profit event organised and sponsored by Abacus Assurance, all money raised from fees and arts sales (currently over £3,000 and rising) will be used to set up bursaries to support struggling artists to continue their creative work. To find out more, please email Philip Vaughan at info@artchallengewales.co.uk or telephone 01656 772222. To view and buy artwork and see the prize-giving presentation from this year’s competition, go to www.artchallengewales.co.uk. Philip Vaughan

AHNUH VALENTINE OPENS MANOR HOUSE STAGE AT KAYA FESTIVAL After a successful concert at Tabernacl Chapel in July to raise funds for the Urdd Eisteddfod (Bridgend 2017), ‘Côr Dysgwyr Porthcawl’ next priority was an invitation to perform at the National Eisteddfod at Abergavenny on 4th August. Five choirs competed in the preliminary round of the Welsh Learners’ category. A confident performance resulted in the Porthcawl choir progressing to the Pavilion stage to compete in the final round. Despite competing against more experienced choirs, the choir gave an excellent performance once again and its members were rewarded with loud applause from a most appreciative audience. The choir gained third place, which was an amazing achievement for a choir formed just six months ago. Every member extends heartfelt thanks to Mrs Anne Brown, Musical Director. Without her musical expertise, enthusiasm and encouragement, this incredible journey would not have been possible. The choir would also like to thank those who have provided rehearsal facilities: Claire, Jane and staff at the Y Centre, Gilgal Baptist Church and Trinity Methodist/URC Church. ‘Côr Dysgwyr Porthcawl’ now looks forward to new challenges, the first is to sing at ‘Bore Coffi’ in Tabernacl on 3rd September. BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR ANNUAL CONCERT Tabernacle Church, Derwen Road, Bridgend, 7pm on Friday 9th September Bridgend Male Choir first heard of Angharad Morgan, when the young soprano appeared with them at an Annual Choir Concert more than 10 years ago. Angharad had won the Russell Sheppard Memorial Scholarship and, as was tradition, was invited to appear with the Choir. The late Russell Sheppard, renowned for his music making, particularly with the youth of the county, was the father-in-law of the then BMC Musical Director, John Jenkins. Wendy Jenkins, daughter of Russell and widow of the late ‘JJ’ remains a Vice President and staunch supporter of the Choir. Also appearing is the Choir’s own Seaside News | 52

Ahnuh Valentine recent performed at Margam Parks Kaya Festival of World Music and Arts on the 7th of August, opening the Manor House Stage. Ahnuh featured on the bill alongside the likes of Craig Charles and Nessi, performing original material from her album ‘Leather and Lace’ and many opera and acoustic covers. After performing at the Festival, Ahnuh said “I had an amazing time performing at Kaya Festival. It was lovely to see so many of my followers at the event! It was a brilliant turn out and a pleasure to be able to open The Manor House Stage. An amazing atmosphere was created with the help of Kaya’s fantastic lighting and sound crew. I look forward to seeing you all again at the festival in 2017 and a huge thank you to the organisers for having me on the bill!” Ahnuh has many upcoming gigs lined up, details of which can be viewed on her website www.ahnuhvalentine.com. PYLE & KENFIG GOLF CLUB JUNIOR GOLF REST BAY NIPPERS ACADEMY GATHERS PACE

Youngsters keen to try their hand at golf, can now look forward to the very best introduction to the game as Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club has been awarded the Golf Development Wales Junior Golf Certificate, and HSBC Grass Roots Golf Centre. Pyle & Kenfig Academy delivers a structured educational syllabus designed to not only introduce boys and girls to the game of golf, but also help them develop the skills and knowledge of the game that will keep them interested and motivated long enough for the golf bug to bite. Pyle & Kenfig is delighted to become one of around only 3 clubs nationwide to be accredited with The Golf Development Wales Junior Golf Cert status, as PGA Director of Golf, Dylan Williams explains: “We’re all very excited to have become an accredited club because it means we can now offer children an exciting and fun learn to golf programme, which, alongside coaching youngsters in how to play the game, also teaches the rules and etiquette and fundamental movement skills, through exciting activities, fun challenges and mini-competitions to ensure that the whole golfing experience is about having fun” Youngsters joining the Pyle & Kenfig Academy receive a detailed Road Map and Coaching Plan, which puts as much emphasis on key movement skills, as it does on playing the game, and there are nine levels to work through, each stage comprising of a course of one-hour lessons, which take the youngsters from novices through to accomplished golfers. The lessons are staged week-by-week for each of the 9 levels and each level is marked by a series of fun skills and knowledge challenges which the children complete to move on to the next level, with progress recorded on the Golf Road Map. “We currently have over 50 youngsters taking part in the coaching programme – and are now recruiting for the new sessions which begin on Monday 5th September in line with the school term. We already have a few interested in joining the new classes, but we’ll always make room for more,” says Dylan If you would like to find out more about joining Pyle & Kenfig Junior Golf Academy, call the PGA Professional team on 01656 783093 Ext 2 or call in at Pyle & Kenfig Proshop which is located at Waun y Mer, Kenfig, near to Kenfig Nature Reserve. July saw our nippers taking part in the Welsh Ocean Championship held at Barry beach. It was held over two days with land, sea and team events. Everyone had great time, and competed with great team spirit. They were rewarded by a great win and coming away Welsh Champions for the 3rd year. Fantastic achievement for them yet again. In August we travelled to Exmouth for the Nipper GB Championships. This was again held over two days with land, sea and team events. We had a team of just 32 nippers but they all did extremely well as always and showed great team spirit once again. We all had a great time and came away with 4th position, which is an amazing achievement and they done us coaches, parents and themselves proud. Amazing kids with fantastic attitudes and behaviour. If you would like more information on Rest Bay nippers, please contact Chris chris.howells5@btinternet.com

Summer always seems to be a long time coming, and a short time before it leaves - can you remember last summer? It was on a Wednesday! As always, we have been making the most of the lighter evenings and enjoying the warmer weather, (even if it’s not been that sunny), and the sea has been gradually getting more and more pleasant for beach training. The hard yards that the Nippers and Juniors have put in have paid off with some great participation in the many carnivals that they have competed in, and some cracking results in the GB Championships - more on this next month. As you read this, the Round the Bay Swim, and the Tuska Tri will have been and gone, and again more on these next time. The Friday night pool training sessions have still been well attended, despite the inevitable holiday absences, and these sessions really help the Nippers with fitness and stamina, which makes the sea sessions more productive and enjoyable. It is also good to see many parents helping out and reinforces the family atmosphere that the club engenders. For more information, or to check out the webcam, go to www.porthcawlifeguards.co.uk Phil Protheroe

First Aid training was rolled out to the membership in July; the evening was a great success and I’d like to thank all who attended and the company first response for running the course. Lots of new faces on club ride’s which is evidence that the club is doing well. 17 members will be taking part in the Barcelona to Monaco ride for Prostate cymru in September, so lots of them are riding some big mileage over the coming weeks . Club rides are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and also a shift workers ride posted most days on Facebook. Club chaingang in partnership with ONITSPORTS race team is on Tuesday evening. All new members welcome so any Questions please contact me on nickemorgan@hotmail.co.uk. Stay safe and KEEP ON TAPPING. Nicky Morgan
