LALESTON GARDENING CLUB CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

September! A time of ‘mellow fruitfulness’, shorter days and very different from August. Time to continuing to harvest produce of fruit and veg. Time also to split herbaceous perennials or sow seed from them to increase your stock of plants for free! Choose your spring bulbs and start to plant them. Don’t forget to harvest those last potatoes - don’t let them spoil. On The 10th September at 2pm our good friend and seasoned horticulturalist Kevin Thomas will open Laleston Gardening Club’s 50th Annual Horticultural Show. This will be the first show we have been able to hold since before the pandemic and we really hope our members will support us with lots of entries and the public will also pay us a visit too. As well as the hall and new tent in the grounds displaying veg, fruit, 8flowers,there will baking classes and crafts too with a raffle and refreshments in the marquee, something for everyone, see you at Cliff Cottage in the centre of the village next to the Parish Church of St David.

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY

September 28th is the date that we are eagerly anticipating as we enjoy the last few weeks of a hot summer. We will be starting back our programme of regular meetings every 2nd and 4th Wednesday evening of the month. As a reminder for new and regular members, we meet at 7 for 7.30 at Gilgal Hall in Park Avenue Porthcawl. We will be enrolling on September 28th but members can enroll over the next few meetings if they miss that date. Committee members are busy finalising the details of the programme but we can expect fantastic floral displays by experienced demonstrators most months as well as regular Practice nights where our tutor will help us create seasonal floral displays, wreaths, baskets and swags. We also have a few interesting gardening themed speakers and some social trips organised. We will be celebrating our 60th club anniversary in November and have a special meal with entertainment planned. There is much to look forward to and we hope to welcome back familiar faces and many new members. No previous experience of flower arranging is necessary - just a love of flowers and friendship. Please call 01656 222985 or look at our Facebook page for more information.

Alison Thomas, Club Secretary

“September is a time of refinement and generosity, largesse dispensed in the knowledge that the days of wine and roses are coming to an end” (Monty Don) Soon be Christmas! September harvest is full of all the veg that we ‘borrow’ from much warmer parts of the world (although this summer we could give them a run for their money) melons, peppers, tomatoes, pumpkins and all the lovely hardy veg are all still growing, spoilt for choice – how fab! This is the ideal month for taking cuttings of your favourites, a plant grown from a cutting will always be exactly the same as it’s parent, it’s essentially cloning! Seed grown will always be different, so if you have a beautiful rose or delicious gooseberry, all these qualities will remain in the new plants taken from cuttings. Time to plant bulbs, try some saffron crocus bulbs so you can harvest your own saffron - a small pinch adds brilliant colour, aroma and flavour to bland rice, a touch of luxury, saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. Beware though it’s also considered aphrodisiac! “Early to bed – early to rise, work like hell and fertilize!” Anon.
