Maddi’s Masquerade Ball for JDRF Dear Editor, This October will see the first ever ‘Maddi’s Masquerade Ball for JDRF’ to be hosted at the Vale Hotel on Friday 30th October. My name is Emma Loyns and I am the proud mummy to two beautiful daughters. We live locally in Bridgend. My eldest daughter, Maddison, has just turned 8 years old. Just after her 6th birthday, on St David’s Day 2013, Maddison was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Although people tend to be aware of type 2 diabetes there is not much understanding and awareness of type 1 which is an autoimmune deficiency that causes the body to attack its own insulin producing cells. Effectively it means she has a broken pancreas. There is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes so this diagnosis had a massive impact on all our lives. Maddison currently uses an insulin pump to control her diabetes. She is connected to the pump 24/7 and endures daily finger pricks, cannula changes, hypos and more recently she has been using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that measures her blood sugar patterns constantly. As Maddison is dependent on so much technology to keep her alive she has to have a 1-2-1 in school and finds visiting friends near impossible unless she has someone with her who is trained in her diabetes management. This also means she cannot stay with relatives or sleep over. Maddison has amazed us all with her attitude towards the condition. She has ups and downs as expected but on the whole she deals with it positively. Above all she has hope, which is something we have fully embraced as a family. We have hope for the future and hope for a cure. From her diagnosis I started supporting diabetes charities. Notably JDRF, which is a relatively small charity but is specifically for research into curing type 1 diabetes. So much has already been achieved by JDRF and the local branch has been particularly supportive of Maddison and our family. I started running 18 months ago to raise money and most recently completed the Cardiff half marathon, collecting sponsorship for JDRF. Maddison herself has started to get involved in raising money for JDRF and ran the Cardiff Bay 2k with her sister and raised £156! This year I have decided to hold an event at which we can all celebrate a lovely evening whilst raising lots of money for this very worthwhile cause that will not only benefit Maddison, but all type 1 diabetics and their families and also help prevent future diagnosis whilst raising awareness of the condition.

Maddi’s Masquerade Ball for JDRF will take place on Friday 30th October at the Vale Hotel. The ball starts at 7pm with a welcome cocktail followed by a sumptuous three course meal, band and entertainment all evening, including a pre-auction website and live auction on the night. Tickets cost £45 and tables of 10 are available. We would love to see support from the local community at this event. The Halloween theme is to be fully embraced with dress code Black Tie and Masks! To book tickets and for more information please contact Emma on the details below. We are also looking for donations for the auction and raffle. We also have a fantastic corporate sponsorship with limited availability. The sponsorship packages aim to provide your company with extensive PR opportunities, and recognition of your contribution towards JDRFs mission to find the cure for type 1 diabetes. If you would like more details on sponsorship opportunities or to make a donation do get in touch. Emma Loyns 07901 020302 emmaloyns@icloud.com

Letters Macmillan Longest Day Golf Challenge
Have your say - email info@seasidenews.co.uk
Local Photo Submissions Dear Editor, Creatures of a sunny day. Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl
Dear Editor, Just a quick message of thanks to all who donated to Macmillan Cancer after our 72 holes of golf in a day. We set out at 4.50am at Neath Golf Club, followed by rounds at The Mond in Swansea, Earlswood and finally Swansea Bay to complete the challenge 16 hours later. The challenge was advertised in the Seaside News - July issue and to date we have collected £3000 with more to follow. Special thanks go out to all golf courses involved in the challenge, Seaside News for their promotion of the event and of course all those who donated to this amazing cause. Andrew James, Porthcawl
Wild Flowers Dear Editor, Give credit when due. Fantastic display of wild flowers by Bridgend Council I believe. Regards, Allan Jones, Porthcawl
What’s Going On At Newton Beach? Dear Editor, Might one ask – what is going on at Newton Beach? A few years ago there were suddenly occasional, in season, charges for parking on a barely maintained area of track (part footpath) and a shamefully unmaintained (neglected) field. This year, after some maintenance to the track (which I think was funded by Coast Wales who have upgraded the Sea Defences at considerable public cost), there is now a charge to park between 10.00 and 23.59 hours, using payment machines and threatening large fines. This scheme is the work of the Newton Beach Development Company and the hours and terms are more forbidding than the council’s own. What indeed does our Council know about it (or about the unusual building going up behind the area), do they approve or do they have no say in the matter? Can someone reassure me that this is not just another case of greedy private landowners taking Porthcawl and its visitors for another ride? Andrew Collier, Porthcawl

Afon y Felin News The last school year seems to have flown by! We had such a busy time, we welcomed Ms Williams from Mynydd Cynffig Infants to lead our school (and we are so pleased that we don’t have to give her back), Mr. Hughes and Miss Jones, who have proved to be very popular teachers with all the pupils. Our P.F.A. have raised lots of money, they paid for the entire school to go on an outing to Folly Farm. Our attendance has increased by over 2%, with each class competing every week for the Attendance Cup! We have held successful after school clubs, offering art, I.C.T., photography, cooking and a lot more. We have formed a basketball team, who came fourth out of seven teams at The Blitz - excellent for a new team. The Lifeguards took an assembly, Cricket Wales taught our children a new skill to use in the future, theatre groups have entertained us and we were extremely fortunate to welcome a harpist! She even let some of the children play. And as we start another school year, we are pleased to welcome all the new pupils, we know you are going to be very happy here. AJ Pritchard Parent Governor

A Level Results Day is always a nerve-wracking time for the boys and girls who have had to wait months to find out their final grades. There were happy faces all round at St. Clare’s in August as it was announced this year’s exam results were the best in 10 years. Our Year 13 students achieved 43% A* and A grades, compared with the national score of 23%, which was wonderful news for all pupils and staff who have worked tremendously hard all year to secure such impressive results. We are especially proud of straight A students: Matthew Pottage, Liam Bolton, Josh Edwards, Jess Lawrence and Briony Heard. As we go to print, we are eagerly awaiting publication of 2015’s GCSE results, and hope to have more good news to share in the next edition. We are also looking forward to welcoming new faces into school on the first day of term with boys and girls from 2 ½ in our Nursery right up to 18 in our excellent Sixth Form. We hope they all settle in well. For more information about what St. Clare’s can offer your son or daughter, please contact our Admissions Officer on 01656 789966. www.stclares-school.co.uk

SCHOOLS Porthcawl Comprehensive School GCSE Examination Results 2015
The Cynffig ‘Family’ Continues To Thrive
Hello again. As I write this, we are in the middle of the examination results season, and we have just spent a wondrful few hours sharing the happiness (and relief!) of our outstanding Year 13 pupils. Once again, they have achieved some heartwarming outcomes, and we are delighted to send them on to the next stage of their academic journey. From Mathematics to Midwifery, and from Art to Accountancy, once again Cynffig pupils have evidenced what we all know to be true: that young people thrive in an environment with a strong community and ‘family’ ethos, where everyone is known and supported as an individual, and where strengths and talents can be recognised and nurtured. I have no doubt that our pupils thrive - often beyond their own expectations - in ways that simply cannot happen without that closeness of shared endeavour. As I write, we are looking forward also to our Key Stage 4 results, and by the time you read this, we will be welcoming a large cohort of GUITAR LESSONS SOUTH WALES eager (and nervous, no doubt!) Year 7 pupils for the beginning of their journey towards the triumphs they too will enjoy. Is there any better job in the world? The students, their families and the school are all celebrating an excellent set of GCSE results. This year saw a large cohort of 256 students and the high quality of results is across the ability range, in total 2711 papers were sat. There has been a significant improvement in the Welsh Government key indicators. The performance in the core subjects was very strong. The Level 2 (grades A* - C) for English was 78.8%, Maths 74.9% and Science a remarkable 98.4%. Based upon these returns the percentage of pupils gaining 5 or more A* - C (including English and Mathematics) improved to 66.3%.The core subject indicator (English, Mathematics and Science) saw improvement to 67.1%. An outstanding feature was the percentage of A*/A grades awarded; English 23.4%, Maths 23.8% and Science 30.1%. Almost a quarter of the core entry resulted in the top grades being awarded. On a broader scale the number of pupils who gained 5 or more A* to C was over 80%. This is especially strong given the traditional GCSE based curriculum the school offers. The school is delighted that the learners across the ability range have all done so well. For the fifth year, no student has left our school without a recognised qualification. This year’s results means the school’s performance compares very favourably with the authority and national figures. A very impressive 33 students gained 8 or more GCSE grades at A*/A, and within this group, 17 gained 10 or more A*/A grades.

Porthcawl
Comprehensive School OPEN EVENING FOR YEAR 7 INTAKE IN 2016
To be held at 6.00pm Thursday 1st October 2015 The school is proud to hold its Annual Open Evening for those parents who wish their children to attend Year 7 in September 2016.
Our recent Estyn inspection report was very positive and we were proud to read that:
Porthcawl is a traditional school with a proven track record of excellence for all. Examination results have been consistently above the local and national averages.
“One of the school’s strengths is the exceptional working relationship between teachers and pupils. The school has a strong ethos based on fairness and this creates a caring and disciplined environment.”
In 2014 (GCSE) • 100% students in Year 11 gained a qualification A*-G • 25% grades achieved were A*/A In 2015 (Key Stage 3) • 89% students in Year 9 achieved Level 5+ in English/ Maths/Science (Wales 81%) English 98% (Wales 86%), Mathematics 90% (Wales 87%), Science 100% (Wales 90%) We organise frequent transition events to help pupils settle in; here are some of their thoughts: “Transition has made me feel more confident!” “The size of the Comp. has become smaller and is not so big and scary any more!” “’I’ve already met new friends from other primaries” Further information can be found on the school website: www.porthcawlschool.co.uk Alternatively you may telephone 01656 774100.
“Transition work with partner primary schools is of the highest quality.” “At Key Stage 3, performance in English, Mathematics and Science has improved and overall performance is higher than modelled expectations.” “Nearly all pupils behave very well in class and around the school. They are ready to learn and participate well in lessons. They are courteous and relate well to one another, to their teachers and to other adults.” More recently: In the Chief Inspector’s Annual Report Porthcawl’s “Helping Hands” transition programme has been identified by Estyn as an area of “Outstanding Practice”.

This novel is the long lost ‘sequel’ to the much-loved To Kill a Mockingbird (though originally written before it). It is set 20 years later when Scout returns to her childhood home from New York in 1954 at the height of discussions on desegregation. I actually enjoyed the book more because it was more ambiguous. Atticus becomes a far more complex character, and racism, change and conflict is all around Jean-Louise and she has to decide whether she could ever go back. All these books and many more are available free of charge at any Bridgend Library. We also have CDs, DVDs, and Audio books. We have reading groups starting back in September for Juniors, Teens and Adults which are a good way of reading a variety of books. Bounce and Rhyme returns on Tuesday Mornings at 10am on September 8th. This summer the library has been alive to Record Breakers - this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. We even have a life size poster of Sultan Kösen - the World’s Tallest Man - that you can measure yourself against. Over 300 children have taken part so far, setting our own record here. Don’t forget to make sure that your children return all their books so they can receive their Certificate and medal. Pedal Power Attraction Set For Porthcawl Uncovering The County Borough’s Hidden History An all-new bike hire facility and cycle network is under development that will offer visitors to Porthcawl a fresh new way of exploring the town and coastline. Covering 4km and designed to link local attractions, facilities and businesses, a total of £300,000 has been allocated for the scheme following a successful bid by Bridgend County Borough Council to the Coastal Communities Fund. Existing pathways will be improved and new cycle lanes and related facilities created along with Porthcawl Pedals, a familyfriendly tourist attraction where visitors will be able to hire bikes. Fresh signage will point the way towards other attractions and local shops, and visitors will be able to use a smartphone app that will tie in with improved tourist information featuring new routes, loops and links. It’s all designed to link in with other regeneration schemes including ambitious plans for bringing the Jennings Building back into use, community-generated plans for establishing a new maritime centre and the townscape heritage initiative which is restoring historic buildings in the seafront area. I’m sure you’ll agree that with an anticipated 9,000 users a year, this is excellent news and is sure to be an asset for Porthcawl and the wider county borough. Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
Helping People Get On The Housing Ladder The Welsh Liberal Democrats have launched ambitious plans to help first-time buyers get on the property ladder. Young people in Wales will be able to buy their own home without a deposit. This revolutionary scheme is a fundamental shift in housing policy and will give young people caught in ‘generation rent’ a chance at home ownership. First-time buyers will steadily build up a share in their home through monthly payments equivalent to rent until they own the property outright after 30 years, just like a normal mortgage. The party is aiming to deliver at least 2,500 rent to own homes over an Assembly term through the existing Social Housing Grant mechanism. These proposals to help people achieve their goal of owning their own home are all about equal opportunity. Under our scheme, it doesn’t matter what your background or family circumstance is, if you can afford your rent then we will help you own your home – something nearly everyone dreams of. The fact is that home ownership has plummeted for the under 35’s. Prices have simply got too far out of reach for too many young families. The Welsh Liberal Democrats are putting forward solutions to help with this problem. Peter Black AM Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net www.peterblack.blogspot.com

The new Digital Bridgend smartphone app has been a real hit with local residents as well as tourists and visitors to Bridgend County Borough. Available on Android and iTunes, it uses augmented technology to enable people to step into the past at key locations across the county borough. Users simply hold their phone up against the skyline to reveal a super-imposed view of how the scene would have looked in days gone by. It has lots of educational value – e.g. by revealing what 18th century life was like at Cefn Cribwr Ironworks or among the cargo ships that used to dock at Porthcawl. The app also includes 17 innovative trails that take users off the beaten track to discover local heritage sites and stories such as the Maid of Cefn Ydfa, medieval sieges, ancient pilgrimages and even sheep rustling incidents. It can be used to unlock commentaries, video footage, audio content, treasure hunts and games. Created by the council in partnership with Visit Wales, European Regional Development Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and more than 40 heritage organisations, the app can be downloaded by following the link at www.bridgendbites.com or searching for ‘Digital Bridgend’ on iTunes or an Android app store. Councillor Huw David Deputy Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
Future Secure For Porthcawl Museum Like me, I’m sure that the vast majority of residents were delighted to hear that a deal has been reached to secure the future of the county borough’s only museum. It was great to see Bridgend County Borough Council, Porthcawl Town Council and the Porthcawl Museum and Arts Collaboration Group working together to agree a lease for the Old Police Station in John Street, which had become surplus to requirements. Benefiting from the previous experience of Bridgend Town Council, a business plan is now being developed that will enable the building to be handed over as part of a community asset transfer. We have already used asset transfers for other popular buildings such as Carnegie House - the former Bridgend town centre library building which now serves as an arts and culture hub and home for Bridgend Town Council – and had deferred the sale of the Old Police Station to allow for alternatives such as this that could prevent the loss of the museum. This type of initiative is an excellent way of ensuring that facilities can remain in public use despite increasing funding shortfalls from central Government, and I hope to see them replicated elsewhere across the county borough. Porthcawl Town Council News Tourism in Porthcawl has received a £300,000 boost with a new cycle path and bike hire scheme following a successful bid by Bridgend CBC from the UK and Welsh Government Coastal Communities Fund. It is predicted the scheme will attract an extra 9,000 visitors a year by establishing a new cycle route stretching from Trecco Bay to Rest Bay, with existing pathways being improved for cyclists and walkers. The money will also be used to create a smartphone app to tie in with improved tourist information – including signage – featuring new routes, loops and links. Our first Family Beach Discovery Days, as part of our Coastal Science & Discovery Experience, have been a great success. Booked to capacity, we made our way down to Trecco Beach, and played some marinethemed games before delving deeper into the rock pools. Our first groups managed to discover all sorts of sea creatures: limpets, anemones, prawns and crabs. The children learned how some sea creatures eat, and also the importance of putting creatures back where you find them to help them to continue to thrive. Big thanks to our Marine Biology students, Rachel and Kayleigh for helping with the groups, and to Porthcawl Lifeguards for assisting with wheelchair users. Our Porpoise Project is continuing too, with our first training session on 8th August. Porpoise were spotted by our volunteers from the pier this Tuesday. We have some great volunteers but we still need more, so if you fancy helping out with just two hours a week we would love to hear from you. Call us on 01656 774341, or email Claire on: claire@porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk. Finally, a big thank you to everyone who came to see us at Porthcawl Festival on 25th July. The sun shone, we got to meet lots of supporters of our project and Casey was kept very busy with face painting for the kids. It was a great opportunity for us to talk about our plans and find out what you think. For more info on Harbourside please go to www.porthcawlharbourside.co.uk. Jayne Bowden

Stroke Club – Shared Allotments This year has been an exceptional year for the Porthcawl Stroke Club shared allotments at the Heol-y-Goedwig site in Porthcawl. With the help of Don Jones and Rob Saunders, the Stroke Club members have been able to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Growing your own food gets you outdoors and into the fresh air, with benefits and reward. Because of the high raised bed planting areas, members can relax their minds, leave worries behind them and concentrate on their planting. Seaside News | 26

In addition to the main talk, there are also updates, items on sky news, etc. More information:http://www.bridgendastronomicalsociety.co.uk Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society
Through Christian Eyes Recently, someone read to me from a 1904 newspaper from the South Wales valleys. The newspaper said that whilst a number of people were standing on a train station platform, suddenly the people felt the presence of God come so close to them that they all broke out in song and started singing songs about Jesus. Nobody there orchestrate it. It just happened. One of the men actually fell on his knees and started praying. Can you imagine such a thing? This was in a public place and written about in the newspaper. It was all to do with the Welsh revival. Here is a paragraph from an article on the Welsh Revival (more to be found on Google): During the spring of 1904 a young Welshman named Evan Roberts was repeatedly awakened at 1:00 a.m. He met with God until 5:00 a.m. The Welsh revival followed. Churches were packed for prayer meetings. In a prayer meeting for young people, Pastor Joseph Jenkins asked for testimonies. A young girl named Florrie Evans, who had only been a believer a few days, rose and with a trembling voice said simply, “I love Jesus with all my heart.” The other young people’s hearts were melted. A powerful spiritual awakening that brought 100,000 people to Christ was under way. Amazing stuff! Neil Harvey

FEATURES Mike Flannigan
The evening speaker at the Bridgend Rotary Club on the 3rd of August was Mike Flannigan speaking about the Forensic Fire Service. Using a powerpoint presentation, Mike explained that after leaving school with not too many qualifications he joined the fire service as a youthful cadet and developed a career path to a very senior position in the service as a Chief Fire Officer - gaining many qualifications on the way. He outlined the responsible and hazardous nature of the job with reference to several significant and often tragic events. More recently he has become a Forensic Consultant, and with the aid of detailed photographs took us through several case studies. Mike outlining the procedures undertaken to identify the causes of fires in suspicious circumstances and the evidence base leading to criminal charges. This was an extremely informative talk delivered in a clear authoritative but modest manner by an expert in his field. Although clearly a serious topic, Mike injected a subtle humour where appropriate and this was much appreciated by members and guests alike. Rotarian Major (Retd) Wayne B Morgan MBE Tel: 01656 714602

News From HM Coastguard, Porthcawl With eight call outs during the last two weeks of July and a further nine in the first two weeks of August, incidents increased significantly with the start of the school holidays. Whilst you may think that this would be the case, this is not traditionally our busiest time of year with lifeguards on duty patrolling the majority of our beaches. Thankfully none of these incidents have been too serious with all involved safe and well. During the start of August, we were paged to an incident at Porthcawl harbour at 01:45 for an emergency beacon report on one of the boats. Being a volunteer station this is always a lovely time for a call with everyone in work later that morning, however it goes to show that we are always on-call. Please sign up on Twitter to @PCoastguard to be kept up to date with all our news and incidents. Finally we have had an excellent response to our recruitment adverts and we hope to be able to formally take on these applicants during September. Tim Vincent, Station Officer
Life With Porthcawl Lions
The Lions’ classic car rally and fair was very successful with many families enjoying the day and raising over £1,000 for charity. Also successful were the Bob Cook games. Both competitors and carers had a great time and returned with a record amount of medals. Trinity carers club are grateful for the help, which allowed them to send members to the games. On Saturday 15th August the club organised a beach clean on Sker beach. The event was well attended and 65 bags of rubbish were collected as well as larger debris. One volunteer actually said if only he had found a set of wheels he could have built himself a new car! Meanwhile the better weather has meant the car boot sales at Porthcawl Rugby Club are gaining both sellers and buyers and the book sales in John Street are doing well. As you know, Porthcawl Lions never stand still and plans are already ahead for the Christmas period, including the grotto and the Boxing Day fun run. Also in January they are planning a Burn’s Night Supper, so watch this space! To find out more about Porthcawl Lions and the work they do visit www.porthcawllions.org.uk. John Cosson

FEATURES Bridgend Rotary Annual Garden Party
News From The Talbot
The Rotary Club of Bridgend Annual Garden Party was held at Rotarian Gwyn Thomas’s house in Pencoed recently. As is usually the case, the Granden Party was a great success with our new President Allan Reeks hosting guests including; the Past District Governor Sandra Townsend, the Ogmore Vale Silver Band and 1062 Air Training Corps. An afternoon of feastive fayre was enjoyed by all approximately 60 in numbers with the magificent display of equestrian horse riding by our newest Rotarian member Jennifer Myerscough. The Ogmore Vale Silver Band stirred emotions with some wonderful entertaining music with the older Rotarians throwing plastic darts into a target trying to win the award for best thrower and the children bowling at the portable bowling alley. Our President Allan Reeks can be identified in the picture with the large panama hat accompnied by past District Governor Sandra Townsend and party host Rotarian Gwyn Thomas. Members of the Talbot enjoyed a day trip to the Cotswolds in July. First stop was Broadway and then on to Bourton-onthe-Water for fish & chips and ice-cream by the river with, of course, a little retail therapy thrown in on the way! BAVO (Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations) and Nathaniel Car Sales have joined forces providing a free Mitsubishi car for use by the community. The Talbot took advantage using it for a week in July to bring some of our elderly members to the luncheon club and bingo. Alterations have resumed at the Talbot; we are creating a doorway into the walled garden, so it can be furnished with patio tables and chairs, to sit and enjoy the sunshine whilst enjoying a cup of tea, waiting for lunch etc. We also intend to remove the stage allowing the internal access, which will integrate the Talbot Centre and Rees Hall into one building. Thanks to some funding, we have bought a portable stage to be used when required and then stored away when not needed. For more information please contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.talbotcc. co.uk Cheryl Butcher
Porthcawl Townswomens Guild News We did not have a meeting in August but enjoyed an outing to Tredegar House and Gardens, now taken over by the National Trust. A very relaxed visit - we were able to sit on the chairs and even lie on one bed! There was information and a guide on hand in every room. Well kept grounds and a lake to round off the visit on a lovely summers day! Our vice-chairman Jean Dorrington and committee member Maureen Williams attended the Mayor’s Civic Service and tea. Our next meeting in on 9th September, 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when Mr Doug Jones will be searching for ‘The Spirit of the 1950s’. Do come along and see if we find it! Can Anyone Remember? Can anyone remember when the dual carriageway into Porthcawl and the New Road to John Street subway was opened? The subway replaced the Station Hill gates that allowed the road to cross the railway and many frustrated drivers will remember the summer chaos caused when the gates closed to allow trains packed with holidaymakers to arrive. Sometime between1970-1975 seems the most popular guess but I have asked all the departments where such information would normally be available but the mystery is, no one seems to know. Refurbishment of the subway in 2011 was a partnership project between BCBC, the students of Porthcawl Comprehensive School and the Porthcawl Shout Forum, and once completed we produced a plan to refurbish the Station Hill entrance. It has taken longer than expected, and not been straight forward, but with BCBC and Porthcawl Town Council funding and help, it will be officially re-opened by Carwyn Jones AM and Nottage Primary School children on Friday 25th September at 10.30am. Porthcawl was built around the railway from the Bridgend valleys to the dock and a storyboard will display the heritage, old pictures and, I hope, the date when this road opened to replace the railway. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Porthcawl WI
Mynydd Cynffig WI
Porthcawl WI meets at the All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month at 2pm in the afternoon. We are a small friendly group and give a warm welcome to all guests and prospective members. We had a very enjoyable social afternoon in July and in August we had an interesting talk on First Aid, which was both educational and useful. On Thursday 10th September we have a trip to Llanerch Vineyard, and in our September meeting, on the 24th, we have a speaker on ‘Dog Walking For the Blind’. Why not come along and join us. Just ring Sue Strachan on 713124 for a friendly chat. Sue Strachan
Tuesday 11th August saw Mynydd Cynffig WI going to Hereford for our Annual outing. 23 of our members attended, we were lucky with the weather and had a good day out-and-about in Hereford. The cathedral was glorious and the stained glass was amazing. We did our best and shopped till we dropped. A lovely meal rounded off a very enjoyable day. We are all looking forward to our September meeting on the 8th in the Talbot Centre, Kenfig Hill. Our speaker is Helen Jones - her topic ‘My Time in The Met’ should be quite interesting. Christmas will soon be upon us and we are looking for ideas and projects with the festive spirit theme, so if you have any ideas call in and share them with us, we always have plenty of tea and biscuits to go round. Laleston WI News Even though there is no monthly meeting in August, the members of Laleston WI had a busy month. A very successful Summer Tea, in celebration of the WI centenary, was held on 6th August in Blandy Hall with a wonderful spread of sandwiches, scones and fancy cakes supplied by members, and a delicious celebration cake made by Diane Marshall. A huge thank you to the hard working committee and all who made this event possible. The entertainment was supplied by the Golden Oldies with a great mix of songs and laughter much enjoyed by everyone. Our guests, WI Advisors Judith Lucas and Ann Davies, were impressed with the newly renovated WI Millennium sundial, which, thanks to the Community Council’s help, looks as good as new. Further events during August included a Summer Supper Party in the Aberavon Beach Hotel on 17th and Car Boot Sale in Porthcawl Rugby Club, as well as the usual monthly Book Club. Our next meeting on September 3rd at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club), where there will be a Harvest Auction with auctioneer Maureen Morgan in charge. Come along and join in the fun, visitors always welcome. Call Margaret on 660384 for further information. Margaret Aylen

Security For Your Family – Nothing Is More Important This month I am focussing on something that none of us can ignore yet we often do...and take a massive risk. It never ceases to amaze me that so many people simply DO NOT devote enough attention to the scenario whereby, a totally unexpected and serious illness occurs, especially where it is the breadwinner of the Family that is affected. Over the years, I have been able to assist several Clients, in Porthcawl and beyond, with claims for critical / serious illness payouts, where those people had the good sense to make sure that they were covered should unexpected illness strike. Although this has never been a pleasant duty due to the nature of the circumstances, I have been quietly satisfied, as an Adviser, that I had done a great job in helping these people with their financial security in case the worst happened. In each case, they have been able to concentrate on getting themselves well again, whilst the policy that I’d arranged for them, did its’ job and paid out the money that was vital to theirs and their Family’s financial security and well-being. As an Adviser, it is a good feeling when you are seen to have looked after your Client as well as you possibly could. Critical Illness cover is there to do a specific job: that is to provide a financial lifeline when unexpected serious illness prevents you from working – and we all know the consequences of having our income reduced or stopped, even: no income= no bills paid. We all know someone who’s suffered serious illness – it could be us next.

Many people pay more for their car insurance or pet insurance than they do looking after the needs of the Family in times of adversity. Now, whilst both car and pet insurance are important in their own way, surely your Family’s security is equally or more important? I’ve yet to meet someone who says that the Family’s and one’s own welfare is not a priority. Pension earmarking is where a fixed percentage of a member’s pension benefits are earmarked for an ex-spouse but the pension stays with the member. Once the member reaches retirement age and starts taking the pension benefits, the ex-spouse will also start to receive the benefits earmarked for them. They will receive a fixed percentage of either the pension income or the tax-free cash lump sum, or both. Pension funds are often the second biggest asset people have outside their main family home; it is therefore unsurprising that they often form part of a divorce settlement. An unintended consequence of the recent pension reforms potentially disadvantages a divorcee with a pension earmarking order that provides an ex-spouse with a fixed percentage of the pension income in retirement. It is therefore important to check that the benefits are protected now that the value of pension funds can be taken entirely as a cash lump sum. If the wording on the earmarking order does not protect them from this, they should seek advice from a solicitor or accredited pension specialist to ascertain whether they can make an amendment to the order. At One Life Financial Planning Ltd we work with legal professional who are able to provide guidance and advice in this area. If you would like further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Bird Watch: Robin
Laleston Gardening Club
Most birds wait until the spring, but Robins have already begun to defend their territorial boundaries. Given their old name of ‘Robin Redbreast’ it is easy to think that only the breast is red (or rather orange) but it actually extends up onto the forehead and is used as a warning to other individuals to ‘keep out’. When the display of the red breast and song fails to warn off an intruder, they will sometimes defend their territory to the death, particularly in autumn and in early spring. The Robin’s call is a rather cross and metallic sounding ‘tick’ which often reminds me of the rapid fire of a machine gun. Males and females look alike. Robins are mainly insectivores so try feeding live mealworms. This species was recently voted Britain’s National Bird. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. September already! We in Laleston are busy preparing for our 45th Annual Show - to be held on Saturday 5th September. Everyone is hoping they will have produce to exhibit. Some ladies have already been busy making jams, chutney and preserving vegetables. Everyone is grumbling about the unseasonable weather. Meanwhile in the garden, continue to feed and deadhead hanging baskets and containers. Fill gaps in borders with autumn flowering plant such as sedum and chrysanthemum. Plant hyacinth and amaryllis early, they make lovely personal Christmas gifts. September is the time to prune climbing and rambling roses once they have finished flowering. Now is the time to think spring bulbs. Hardy bulbs include crocus, daffodils, hyacinths and tulips. Soil should be loose and free of rocks and weeds. Bulbs can be planted quite close together, if you want them in clumps, dig a larger hole to accommodate more than one bulb, and then cover with soil and mulch. My absolute favourite is Galanthus nivalis, milk flower, better known as the common snowdrop. When they appear, spring is not far off and we can get all optimistic about the weather once more. Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club Spring seems like a distant event but September is the ideal month to start making preparations for a fantastic floral display by planting spring bedding like pansies, wall flowers and sweet Williams also the delight of choosing spring flowering bulbs, choose firm plump bulbs, plant them as soon as possible so they can start putting down roots, such a rewarding task when they start poking their little heads out after a long dreary winter! In the vegetable plot plant autumn onion sets and spring cabbage. September is the traditional time for planting garlic as it needs a period of cold weather to grow well (I wish I did!). When peas and beans finish cropping cut them down at ground level, they provide nitrogen, which is released into the soil as the roots break down. Some flower seeds can be planted outside now, like marigolds, cornflowers and poppies. Nice to look forward to! We are running a trip to Malvern Autumn Flower Show on September 22nd, contact Tracy on 743410 if you would like to join us – it’s a fab day out! If you are a sole trader, a partner in a private firm, or a company director, then have you protected your business against all eventualities? Many business owners will have various forms of key man insurance to protect against the possibility of critical illness or even death, but most do not protect against the risk of becoming incapable of managing their affairs. This could occur for numerous reasons such as an accident, a stroke, or an illness which leads to the owner becoming mentally incapable. There is no automatic right for any other person to step in and deal with your business affairs if this were to happen to you. In particular, the law changed in 2013 in relation to directors of a limited company. The changes were designed to remove the stigma associated with mental illness, and now prevent a company director’s termination by reason of that person’s lack of capacity to carry out their role. No matter how small your business is, if you become incapable of dealing with your affairs, then no other person can get access to the business accounts, no person can sign on your behalf, staff and suppliers cannot get paid, and any potential contracts could be lost. This downward spiral could mean the end of the business completely. Every business should therefore plan for the possible loss of an owner through illness or serious injury by having a Commercial Lasting Power of Attorney in place. Whilst these documents can be relatively straightforward to prepare, there a number of considerations which need to be taken into account. For example, if you are regulated by a professional body, then your proposed Attorney must also be regulated by the same body. If you are a company director, then whilst your other directors would be a sensible option to appoint, you must consider the implications of giving them increased voting rights if they were to use the power of attorney? Whoever you decide to appoint, it is essential that you plan for the possibility of being unable to act in order to protect not only your business, but also your employees. For a no obligation meeting to discuss this at our Porthcawl Office, please contact Jonathan Powell, Head of the Estates and Trusts Department.

Raising Money For Kidney Research
Slimming World Gilgal group undertook a sponsored walk for ‘Race for Life’ and raised £70.00 a huge thanks to all from the group who took part. We meet every Monday night at 5 30pm. If you are interested in joining please pop in where a warm, friendly welcome awaits you. However if a Tuesday morning suits you better, I am pleased to announce from the 1st September @ 9.30am a NEW group will be opening its doors at Gilgal Church Hall, Woodland Ave, Porthcawl. So why not choose which is best for you and come along and soon you will see a new you. Bev Rosser-Smith
Once again, with the support of all its loyal followers, KRUF has been raising money for kidney research and equipment. Recently KRUF held a ladies day at the races. Hosted generously by the Hi-Tide, the ladies dressed to impress and had an amazing day. The day began with amazing vocals from Rebecca Hearn who donated her time for the society. Then all enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea. This was followed by a stylish fashion show from Loulou in Pyle Garden centre. Jane James compered the show and all the models looked wonderful. Next the ladies placed their bets for the horse racing and finished with a raffle - generously donated by local businesses and friends of KRUF. The event raised £1,600. Maria, who was in Porthcawl, won the best hat competition and Marilyn Morgan once again won the funniest hat competition. Then in July Jean Schofield kindly hosted a BBQ, which, in spite of the rain, was enjoyed by all and raised over £900. Thank you once again for all your support this year and we will now be approaching local kidney units to see what equipment they need. Judith French Publicity Officer
MSM, So What Exactly Is It, And Why Is It So Great? Technically, MSM is an abbreviation for methyl-sulfonylmethane, which is organic sulphur compound. This compound is the third largest nutrient found in the human body and is found in all vertebrates. MSM is also an ingredient found in quite a few foods, meat, dairy products as well as vegetables. The clinical use of sulphur as an adjunct in our diet is becoming progressively more recognised as an important tool for optimising health. MSM is already well known for its joint health benefits, but it may be important for a whole host of other reasons as well. Certainly, diet is the primary tool for reducing your risk for chronic degenerative diseases. For example, sulphur plays a critical role in detoxification, and also in inflammatory conditions. For detoxification, sulphur is part of one of the most important antioxidants that your body produces: glutathione. Without sulphur, glutathione cannot work. POEMS The Railway Of Old
The Roundabout
Old boundaries of signal boxes, Which today can still be seen, Many removed without forethought, By politicians trying to make the industry more lean.
Another year sparkling silver trees Shining like stars
The old railway sleepers, Once oily are looking dry, Distressed and broken by many seasons, And many years gone by.
The old semaphore signals are all going, Changed to the new brighter style LED, The small signal boxes have been closed down, And into the Super Signalling Centres the staff will be. Some old features can still be noticed, Whilst travelling along the railway tracks, The remnants of old buildings, platforms and sidings, Which will never come back. Whilst transport is getting much quicker, From outskirts into towns and cities, New village stations won’t be built, Which is more the pity. The railway of old were so intense, The routes were much wider and vast, A network which we need again today, Removed by wrong decisions in the past. Written by David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend
Open
I couldn’t open You couldn’t open Couldn’t express, that inability took us, where? Resistance is everything Not to open Not letting in Not letting out Only lean, panting, barring Iron strong, fierce Resistance is everything Resistance is everything! What does it mean, this barring resistance? Hearts padlocked Sealed shut Am I fearing you? Are you fearing me? Or is it that we, fear only ourselves Is resistance all? Or shall we open Daring to see face to face Our own mirrored image. Carol Down Seaside News | 46
In The Quiet Of My Home
One year we had A metal Christmas tree That looked like it had Arrived from Mars
Last summer we had the proud poppies Each one a fallen soldier This year a wild flower meadow Swaying gently in the sun Mingling with the poppies Guardian angels to everyone The flowers bringing with them All kinds of wildlife too Birds, bees and butterflies To name but a few A natural habitat With food and seeds For a winter treat If only out towns and cities Would plant mini meadows too The roundabouts would be so pretty An alternative to traditional flowers Always bright and gaudy And always in line Instead they would be like Patchwork quilts Now wouldn’t that look fine! Well done once again Porthcawl Council. Susan Waters, Porthcawl
Poetry Can Flow So Freely When your spiritual mind is opened, Just relax and let the writing start, When the sentences come together, It will flow freely like art.
You can ask them to come forward, So you can start to understand, When you get used to the process, You can try and call them on demand. You may write many things, Like poems and philosophy, Or a mixture of these both, If you are spiritually gifted like me. Poetry can flow so freely, When you start to get the knack, And once you start your writing, There will be no going back. Written by David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend

This old man’s mind begins to roam, I think of the valley where I came from Pantygog is the place where I was born, A few little shops and Tutts bakery We bought their bread it was so tasty, I remember the time when I was three We went to school at three you see, A little school upon a hill A little place called Pontyrhyl, My grandpa took us to school everyday We would play along the way, Grandpa would collect us when school was done He took us home to there we would run, My man would cook our dinner on the fire She worked so hard she did not tire, We played on the mountain where we would roam When it was time we would go home, At fourteen I left school and went to work Down Ffaldau coal mine I did not shirk, Now all my working days have passed All the coal mines closed at last, Now my valley turned back to green With clear water in the streams, No more coal dust that turned them black The coal tips gone they won’t come back, Where coal tips were they planted trees My mind goes back when I was there, I visit my valley and see what I had Where I went fishing as a lad, I fished with a stick a pin and cotton These memories will never be forgotten, I’m glad to say my valley is now green It’s now much better than its been, I remember the dirt and all the grime When all the pits were in their prime, I visit my valley now and again The joy the muck the knowledge I’ve gained, I love the Garw where I was born It’s my paradise in a different form. Love, melodious as a nightingale’s song That floats on air’s softest breath Touching gently on tender lips Rippling through the strings of my heart. Sweet music you make for me my love My life with you one sung aria Harmonious chords of sensuous tunes One’s feeling of contentment with you! Sarah Saunders (Eldridge) Porthcawl

Arts Bridgend Male Choir Update By the time you read this, Bridgend Male Choir will have had the opportunity to entertain a private party of keen musicians on their visit to Europe. All the way from Auckland, New Zealand, the tour party is individually tasked to learn their parts even before attending rehearsal! The Concert was held at one of Wales’ iconic places associated with music, Craig Y Nos Castle, Swansea Valley. Two Choir associated weddings will have completed August’s summer schedule. Details of the Choir’s September programme are listed on the ‘Bookings Page’ of its website, including ticket prices & availability. The Rugby World Cup features prominently starting on the 24th, when choristers entertain at St Peter’s Hall, Cardiff in BBC Sports Reporter, ‘Phil Steele’s Rugby World Cup’ - for the charity Shine Cymru. A number of personalities associated with the game will be present. On the 26th, the Bridgend choir provides hospitality entertainment at the renowned Leicester Tigers RUFC, Welford Road HQ, as part of the Tiger’s Rugby World Cup plans. It’s the day when England face Wales at Twickenham, but only one group of supporters will be celebrating! Full details of the Choir’s Annual Concert on 3rd October also appears on the website. http://www.bridgendmalechoir.co.uk/ bookings/choir-concert-dates.aspx (scroll down) David T Burt Media Officer
A Film Maker’s Point of View
Lately, one of the pleasures of working behind a film camera, as opposed to a digital video camera, has to be the look of surprise on people’s faces when they see something that they thought had long ago been consigned to history out and about and working for its keep. It happens all the time, with remarks like “That’s an old camera you’ve got there!” to which I invariably reply, with a smile, “Yes, but it’s still taking pictures.” Which is more than you would be able to say for any of the obsolete video formats. Only yesterday, I was filming in a town centre arcade, using my Arriflex 16SR, conscious that two men were standing behind me, watching intently. After I had taken the shot, one of them stepped forward and said, in a slightly incredulous voice, “That’s a film camera?” “Yes,” I replied, and he ventured, “16mm?” in a correct guess of the film’s gauge. I nodded, and he pointed to the shutter inching knob, which he had seen rotating as I took the shot. “That thing was turning around,” he said, having just witnessed the rare sight of a movie camera with a mechanism in use. Last month I mistakenly referred to Charlotte Skidmore as Charlotte Skinner, I apologise Charlotte. Porthcawl male choir was recently joined by Port Talbot’s Cymric Male Choir and the Port Talbot based ladies choir Cor Serenata, at a concert held in All Saints Church in aid of the children’s charity ‘LATCH’ which is a charity set up to support the Oncology Centre at the Childrens Hospital for Wales. Both male choirs were conducted by Mair Jones and accompanied by Richard Davies, whilst the ladies were conducted by Matthew Lewis and accompanied by Elisabeth Jones. The two male choirs combined in singing a number of well known pieces from their repertoire which included ‘Angels’ and ‘Sara’, whilst the ladies gave beautiful renderings of such pieces as the lovely Welsh lullaby’ Suo Gan’ featured in the film ‘Empire of the Sun’, ‘The Rose’ and ‘I Know Him So Well’. All three choirs joined in singing Karl Jenkins ‘Ave Verum’ and ‘Calon Lan’. The concert raised in the region of £870 for Latch. Don’t forget Porthcawl Male Choir’s Annual Concert featuring TV stars Richard and Adam in the Grand Pavilion on Saturday September 5th at 7pm. John Williams

Arts Stag’s World of Rock The headliners for this year’s Planet Rock Stock Music Festival have been announced, with FM, Rival Sons and The Darkness all topping the bill on different nights. Rival Sons are being tipped as the next big thing and are worth a listen, and there are nearly thirty top bands over the weekend, which is being held on 4th, 5th and 6th December – so get your tickets early from the Planet Rock website as it sold out last year! I must try and catch Project X, featuring former Red Not Chili Peppers’ members Ben, Jimmy Bradley and the Norris brothers, Ian and Jason. I’ve heard good reports about them which is hardly surprising as they are some of the most talented musicians gigging on the local circuit, and I must say congratulations to Jimmy on his recent marriage. It’s good to see the Grand Pavilion booking top acts, so make a note in your diary for 2nd October, when former Visage, Ultravox and Band Aid singer/songwriter Midge Ure performs in concert there. Finally, I’ll review the Newton Pop and Beer Festival next month because of our early printing schedule. Keep your news coming. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Rival Sons

We start our new season on Thursday 3rd September with an enrolment and social evening and we have a packed programme for 2015/16 with some excellent presenters and judges lined up, so it should be another exciting and fun-filled year at the club. We held our Annual Exhibition in the Main Hall of the Grand Pavilion from 10th to 16th August, which performed extremely well, with some excellent comments from visitors. We also had some great Thursday evening and Saturday field trips - thanks to Heather Roper - and our first competition will be the Chairman’s Trophy, which only accepts images taken on club evenings or field trips, so should be fun. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds on 01656 772831 for more information.

Sport Rest Bay SLSC Nipper News
On July 18th and 19th our nipper section competed in the Welsh Open nipper championships held by Rhoose SLSC at Barry Beach. We all had a brilliant weekend, with the nippers giving it 100% with smiles on their faces at all times. They competed in both sea events and on land events with great team spirit. This resulting in a fantastic well deserved win. Rest Bay Nippers were crowned 2015 Welsh Open Champions! They really did the coaches, club and parents proud. This making them once again double Welsh Champions along with their joint Welsh still water championship win at the start of the year. A massive well done to all the nippers that took part. We now look forward to competing in the GB Championships at the end of August at Exmouth. Chris Howells
Porthcawl Lifeguards A big well done to our nippers and their parents who flew the flag for the club at the Welsh Nipper Championships in Barry back in July - on a surprisingly sunny day. We currently have a bit of an influx of new nippers joining the club, so if any one is interested please have a look at our website porthcawlifeguards.co.uk for further details. On the first weekend in September we will be hosting the Welsh Junior Lifesaving Championships at Coney beach. This will give our junior team a great opportunity to pit their skills and fitness against all the other clubs in Wales. By the time you read this we shall hopefully, weather permitting, have run another successful version of our round the bay swim and will also be recovering from our so called family fun day on August bank holiday weekend, details to follow next month. Taking On The Bristol Channel For Charity
Taking on the Bristol Channel is no mean feat for any type of craft especially when you consider it has the second biggest tidal flow in the World! Yet Glenn Clatworthy and Sam Moore, who were both crowned World Champion Ocean Men last year at the World Championships in Montpellier, France, decided to do just that. Not only happy to cross the channel but to paddle on their ocean racing kayaks from Coney Beach in Porthcawl to Ilfracombe in Devon and then paddle back to Porthcawl all in the same day! The paddle turned out to be 27miles each way so a 54 mile trip due to the tide and currents. It took them 3 and a half hours to paddle to Ilfracombe and 4 hours to paddle back to Porthcawl, both Glenn and Sam were exhausted after the paddle but they were determined to finish as it was to raise money for the Sandville Self Help Centre in Kenfig. A big thank you must go out to local fisherman Abe Prescott and lifeguard Justin Thomas for keeping a watchful eye on the boys on their way over. We have set up a just giving page for any donations which is Http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Glennandsamsbigoldpaddle Any donations would be much appreciated. Jo Clatworthy
