WHITE CHRISTMAS

Dear Editor, GET £30,000 TAR We are now over 3 months into Karavan 4 The Kidz II and would love the local community to get involved with even more fundraising. For those who are unaware - in 2013 a group of friends got together, raised £25,000 and purchased Emyr’s Karavan4thekidz. The caravan was then given to Latch, the Welsh Children’s’ Cancer Charity, the idea being that the caravan was used by children suffering from cancer and their families. The caravan is in constant use and proved to be a massive success to the point where the charity would love to own a second caravan to be able to offer even more children and their families this crucial respite. The target is to raise £30,000 this time so any help would be gratefully appreciated, whether you would like to organise a quiz, coffee morning or even ask your employers if they have a designated charity? Any donations can be made through Just Giving Karavan 4 The Kidz, or contact us through our Karavan 4 The Kidz Facebook page or the Emyr Owen branch of Latch page, here you’ll find more information about Latch and a list of different fundraising dates so you can get involved. AMAZINGLY OUR RUNNING TOTAL HAS REACHED £11,000 ALREADY! Thank you to the Kenfig Hill Fire Fighters - who held a very successful car wash. The Prince of Wales in Kenfig and Pothcawl Hotel Gym held their Christmas parties - thanks for your generosity and effort. Also, thanks to the Porthcawl Bonfire Committee & Volunteers for their kind donation. Continued support from The Swan and the huge donation from sky divers; the month of quiz nights - thanks to Kim and Zin Zan Dut for their time. It’s amazing that so many people are being so generous with their time and donations, but we have to mention the people who go along and support the events as well - thank you all so much. We would love the local community to continually embrace this project and see what we can achieve together - we have been fortunate to have had some large donations, but please do not worry if you cannot raise too much; if everyone who reads the Seaside News donated just £1 then we’d have enough for a number of caravans! Many thanks again for everyone’s help, Karavan 4 The Kidz

WASHED UP Dear Editor, While I was walking with my dog Tilly on Newton beach last Sunday I came across this large fish/ mammal washed up with the tide. I took this picture with my mobile phone and I was wondering if any of your readers can identify what sort of fish it is. Also, maybe lots of surfers would like to see whom they are swimming with! Many thanks hope your readers will like the picture. Ruth Wheeldon Porthcawl

Letters PORTHCAWL CARNIVAL CANCELLED FOR 2016 Dear Editor, It is with great regret that we have to announce that for 2016 no carnival has been arranged. As a consequence of issues arising at the Carnival in July 2015, and correspondence received from the Chief Executives’ Office, Licensing Department of Bridgend County Borough Council and Porthcawl Town Council the organisation of the carnival is no longer financially viable. We would like to thank all those who have helped, participated and attended the carnival over the years. We appreciated your assistance. The objective of the carnival was to involve the community in a fun day. Additionally the carnival has raised substantial funds over the years that we have donated to groups and good causes for the benefit of Porthcawl and the local community. Should any interested party consider that they could organise the event, please contact Porthcawl Buckaneers, KB Marlow Carnival Coordinator

BUSINESS HELPED ME TO RECOVER Dear Editor, Where to begin? I am a new small business in Porthcawl. If someone had asked me a year ago were did I see myself in a year I’d have probably said not here. I had a complete mental, physical and emotional breakdown. To the point I couldn’t even cope with the day-to-day things in life. I had panic attacks, didn’t want to go out and do things. When it comes to domestic violence people automatically think physical. But it’s not always it can be mental and emotional abuse, for which there is no physical evidence and the scars take longer to heal. I wanted to let domestic abuse victims know that although it doesn’t seem like things will improve - they will - it just takes time. Take small steps and don’t give in. After 20 years of mental and emotional abuse from my partner/ex husband. He kept me away from my family and friends. Each time I was succeeding at something he’d convince me I was useless - a failure. Whatever I did was never good enough; he’d tell me I was ugly and fat. Due to this I had no conference in myself, I thought everything I did was rubbish or not good enough. Even now I have good days and bad days. Thanks to being back close to family and friends each day gets a little better. And if it wasn’t for the help and support of family and friends I wouldn’t have been able to start my business. It’s given me something to focus on while recovering, I have a reason to get up each morning, and although I’m a fully qualified chef due - to being diagnosed with depression and breakdown - it is very hard to get a job. Each day I’m getting my confidence and who I used to be back. The scars will be there for a long time, but in time I will hopefully heal. Having the business to concentrate on has saved my life. I am not looking for sympathy, people who know me will tell you I’m stubborn and would rather struggle than ask for help. I’m not even sure if this article will get published? To all victims of domestic abuse - be it physical, emotional or mental - never give in. If you do they have won. Mrs L Baker North Cornelly Seaside News | 10

THEATRE GOERS RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY

Dear Editor, Generous families enjoying Beauty and the Beast pantomime at the Grand Pavilion Theatre, Porthcawl on Sunday 13th December have raised an impressive £1,106 for local charities. Mayor of Bridgend County Borough, Councillor Richard Young and Mayor of Porthcawl Town, Councillor David Newton Williams attended the performance along with representatives from the Mayors’ charities. The money was raised through a combination of bucket collections, raffle and a donation made from every ticket sold for the performance. Guests and families were treated to a spectacular performance of Beauty and the Beast on its sold-out opening weekend with characters such as Dame Dorothy Do-It, Willy Do-It, Beauty, Pimple, Eugene, Enchantress and of course the Beast! www.grandpavilion.co.uk Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Letters MADDI’S BALL RAISES HUGE AMOUNT FOR JDRF!

Have your say - email info@seasidenews.co.uk

covers were donated by Events by Jan and really set the room off. Emma’s own bespoke masquerade ball mask and extras for decoration were donated from a complete stranger who was touched by the story - ‘Samantha Peach Masks’. Local businesses stepped in to donate auction and raffle prizes. Sponsorship came from Mid Glamorgan Provisions, Porters Estate Agents and Park Street Dental Surgery, all of who attended the event. And the total raised? Well an astounding £16,488! A massive ‘Thank you’ to everyone involved! Emma Loyns, Bridgend

APPEAL FOR POEM VERSES

Dear Editor, Maddi’s Ball for JDRF took place on 30th October at the Vale Hotel. Organised by Emma Loyns and husband Rob, the inspiration behind the ball was Maddi, aged 8, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in March 2013, aged just 6 years old. The family’s lives were turned upside down by this oftenmisunderstood condition. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune deficiency. The cause is unknown and there is no cure, leaving no choice but to administer insulin injections and regularly test blood for life. Maddison is on an insulin pump with a continuous glucose monitor. She needs constant supervision and round the clock care. Shortly after Maddison was diagnosed the family started raising money for JDRF, who research for a cure and also to improve the life of those with Type 1. So far, events to raise money included running and sponsored events at work. This year Emma organized the first ever ‘Maddi’s Ball for JDRF’. It was a successful event with 180 guests attending the Masquerade Ball. Guests were entertained by Gerodie Depp – Swansea’s Jack Sparrow who donated his time for free, and greeted Maddi at the welcome reception with her very own Jack Sparrow toy! After drinks, guests ate a lovely meal and danced the night away to ‘The Story Goes’ who were amazing! A table magician also provided entertainment, and a quirky Photo Booth Company - Guest Who, also donated time to entertain guests and provide pictures. Photographer Paul Forsyth provided complimentary photography during the evening. There was a silent auction and live raffle and auction of fantastic balloon models donated by Caroline at the Party House in Pencoed. Chair Seaside News | 12

Dear Editor, The following verse is NOT my own work but something that I had my memory jogged to recently. It is a sort of parody which used to be sung in ‘singing pubs’ around fifty years ago to the tune of ‘If you ever go across the sea to Ireland’ and goes like this: If you ever come across the sea to see Wales If it’s only at the closing of the day Just to sit and watch the moonrise over Ogmore And watch the sun go down on Trecco Bay Just to listen to the ripples of the Ogmore And the miners in the Garw digging coal Or to sit beside a slag heap in Treorchy And watch the bus come down from Nantymoel I am sure that there must have been more verses, but the above is all that I can recall. Are there others out there who remember this? Do they know any more of it? Does anyone have any idea who wrote it and when? If you are able to ask the questions, perhaps your readers can supply the answers to the puzzle. Dan Berry North Cornelly

NEWS FROM WEST PARK PRIMARY December was certainly action packed. The Infants had a wonderful afternoon exploring our Woodland for clues which led them to a very special visitor. He invited them to visit his toy mine which thankfully was just a short bus ride away in the Rhondda! There the children spent time enjoying the magic of Christmas and brought back a gift for all the hard work they have been doing in school. The Juniors created some fantastic upcycled decorations and thoroughly enjoyed a recycling workshop with Dave Shankland. The Porthcawl Comprehensive BTEC performance of Cinderella was a real highlight as was the disco and Christmas dinner. All this whilst still concentrating on the curriculum and coping with the chicken pox phew! We are committed to developing confidence in each and every one of our pupils and our Christmas concerts provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase talent and celebrate with our whole school community. I would like to thank everyone involved in another huge success and wish you all a very Happy New Year. Mr Bird

ST CLARE’S SCHOOL NEWS

From the smallest in our Nursery to the tallest in our Senior School, the boys and girls at St Clare’s School, Porthcawl would like to wish the readers of Seaside News a very happy and healthy New Year. The last few weeks leading up to Christmas were very hectic (although it seems months ago now). There were Christmas concerts every day with pupils from the Nursery upwards providing parents and grandparents with festive entertainment. The lovely “Carols by Candlelight” senior school concert showcased the tremendous talent we have here at St. Clare’s. We’re looking forward to The Lion King at Easter! Everyone enjoyed the Christmas trips! Nursery pupils visited Abbot’s Kitchen in Margam, Prep pupils saw “Snow White”, Senior pupils enjoyed tenpin bowling or Laserzone in Swansea and the Sixth Form gathered for a meal at the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl. We are now looking forward to the term ahead and warmly welcome all the new pupils joining our Nursery right up to our Sixth Form. Our next Open Day takes place on Friday 29th January. To book your place please contact Holly Fowlkes, Marketing and Admissions Officer on (01656) 789966. Simon Antwis, Headmaster Photo: St Clare’s Nursery Nativity Play

NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS The festive season was, as ever, a hectic time at Nottage. Nursery and Reception performed ‘Away in a Manger’ through the eyes of Maurice the Mule. Year 1 and 2 performed ‘Hosanna Rock’ and the Junior department performed a version of the classic pantomime, Aladdin. A donation from our concerts and our ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ were made to Y BONT who strive tirelessly in enabling children with disability to fulfil their potential. The school choir went on their travels, singing beautifully for Carols in the Pavilion, The All Saints Christmas Tree Festival and at the Masonic Home. Once again the PTA put on a fabulous Christmas Fayre and came to the rescue in heavily subsidising ‘Christmas Treats’ for the children. These included the Tiddlers’ visit to the Christmas Kingdom at the Celtic Manor and the annual cinema visit for Years 1 through to Year 6 at McArthur Glen. Diolch yn Fawr PTA. So as we say goodbye to 2015, the children and staff at Nottage Primary would like to wish all Seaside News readers a very Happy New Year. K. Townley

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL WILL ROCK YOU

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM CYNFFIG COMPREHENSIVE!

On 27th January, the curtain will go up on our 38th consecutive school show, and this year pupils will delight audiences with their production of “We Will Rock You”. Rehearsals are frantically taking place at every available opportunity to ensure that the show lives up to the long tradition of professionalism and excellence enjoyed year after year at the Grand Pavilion. Producing the show has again brought out the best in everyone and thanks to the cast, staff and parents who give so much to ensure the marvellous success of our show – long may the tradition continue at PCS! As last year, Saturday is a matinée and tickets are disappearing fast. Last year was a sell-out so don’t delay calling the Grand Pavilion Box Office 01656 815995. In December we held our Sixth Form Open Evening for prospective pupils and parents for September 2016. The evening was a huge success with particularly large numbers of pupils coming from other schools thinking of joining PCS for the Sixth Form. Anyone who missed this can obtain information from Ms Crook, Head of Sixth Form on 01656 774186, or email clare. crook@porthcawlschool.co.uk. Year 9 pupils have a busy time ahead in choosing their options this month. Parents will be able to discuss any issues at Parents’ Evening on 13th January. For all our latest news visit www.porthcawlschool.co.uk. Happy New Year! Andrew Slade

As we welcome a new year it’s time again to reflect on the many achievements we’ve enjoyed here at Cynffig. Our Basket Ball team comprising of Year 9 pupils Ben Evans, Liam Evans, Chad Hemming, Joseph Joyce, Todd Murray, Tom Rees, Zac Sim, Lowri Thomas and Keiran Thomas won the Bridgend Key Stage 3 Basketball tournament held here at Cynffig. Cynffig players beat teams from Porthcawl and Brynteg schools to achieve a memorable 29-20 win. Local MP Madeline Moon visited the school to speak to students and celebrate their success. Amongst them Year 9 pupil Ryan Evans shared his experiences participating in our ‘Mindfulness’ course. ‘Mindfulness’ supports students in coping with daily challenges to realise their potential, and last term our pupils spoke of its positive impact in Bridgend’s ‘Mindfulness’ conference. Our Governing Body have recently undertaken the ‘Governing Body Quality Mark Bronze Award’, an initiative which supports schools in improving standards of governance. By reflecting on practices and the Governing Body’s involvement in the running of the school, we have been able to strengthen and further enhance Cynffig’s improvement journey. A journey we believe will maximise the outcomes and opportunities for all of the young people in our care. Hannah Castle - Head Teacher 01656 740294

AFON Y FELIN NEWS Andy O’ Rourke, a local artist spent the day with some of our pupils, he is leading a project to transform the walls of The Kenfig Nature Reserve by painting murals on them. Some lovely artwork was produced, and he paid us a wonderful compliment, remarking that he enjoyed the warm atmosphere in our school, thank you Andy. P.C. Steve spent time talking to The Willows about the importance of Rules in our lives. Our annual Christingle Service was led by Rev. Dr. Duncan Walker in Maudlam Church. Cerys, Charlie M., Sam M., Ellie and Rhianna gave readings, and Dafydd, Charlie P., Ellis and Alfie recited a poem, together with the outstanding singing it was a very enjoyable service, thanks to all the parents who attended to support the children. There was also a church service on Sunday the 6th December, the children did us proud! After all the rehearsals for our Christmas plays, the performances of Welcome Little Baby and Santa’s on Strike were absolutely flawless, they all worked so hard, and there were quite a few tears through the nativity, (from the parents!). Our choir also took part in the Christmas Concert at Pisgah Chapel. A.J. Pritchard - Parent Governor

BE A GOOD SPORT AND ‘PASS IT ON’ A new campaign is urging us all to do three good deeds to help others improve their health and wellbeing. It could be something like inviting someone to join you at an exercise class, or befriending an elderly neighbour who may feel isolated. Whatever it is, the ‘Pass it On’ campaign is an excellent idea that started in local schools and is now spreading wider into our communities. The original idea came from school girls who have formed ‘Girls Networks’ in local secondary schools to improve physical activity levels among young girls and women. Across the UK, there is generally a drop-off in sports participation when girls reach their teenage years. So, in Bridgend County Borough, the networks have taken steps to combat this and they’ve already been responsible for changing PE kits, adapting changing rooms and gyms, and varying the choice of physical activities available within participating schools. Huge strides have been made so that girls feel more comfortable about getting active, and the ‘Pass it On’ campaign is the latest step. So why not start the New Year as you mean to go on by doing a good deed and encouraging other people to ‘Pass it On’ too? SCHOOLS CHRISTMAS AT PENCOED COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL Thank you to all the staff and pupils involved in the Christmas Concert at the end of last term. The audience enjoyed every aspect of the full and varied programme, ranging from individual performances (reading, vocal and instrumental), brass and string group items as well as a variety of choral contributions. 6th form pupils had a busy time at the end of term. As part of the WBQ Community a group of pupils supported Trussell Trust local Bridgend Food Bank by taking part part in a food collection drive at Tesco in Bridgend, handing out list leaflets to shoppers to identify items required by the food bank and then collect any items people wish to donate. The sales of wooden reindeer by the 6th form INTERACT Charity group proved very highly popular again . This group, mentored by Mr Edgar Burt of the Bridgend Rotary Club, arrange a variety of fund raising events throughout the year. Another end of term Christmas tradition is the ‘Big Sing’ when staff and pupils come together in the Sportshall for some vocal exercise. During this year’s Big Sing £84 was raised for Shelter. Year 12 pupils organised a highly successful Christmas English and Drama Tuition Fair again this year in aid of (including GCSE and A Level). various charities. TECHNOLOGY WELCOME TO THE TECHNOLOGY SECTION OF SEASIDE NEWS Each month we will be providing advice and answering questions sent in by our readers - which relate to all thing IT. This month we are focusing on backing up important files on your PC or Mac. Many people resort to portable USB drives but fail to remember to plug them in once a week and take a backup, if you remember to do this on a regular basis, then your files will be safe providing the USB drive doesn’t take a become corrupt, I’ve come across many customers who have lost their entire collection of photos etc due to USB Drives become unreadable. Whilst in 90% of these situations, we are able to resurrect the data from the faulty USB drive, it’s a costly exercise. The best way in my opinion is to harness the use of Cloud Backups. There are many free options you can try for free. For example, Google Drive offers 15Gb of online storage for free, if 15Gb is not enough then you can buy more for very little £££. Also, Dropbox is very popular but only offer 2Gb free of online storage but again you can buy more if you run out of space. To get these products working on your PC/Mac/IPad/iPhones/ Android devices, just type Google Drive or Dropbox into a search engine of your choice and follow the links. Feel free to get in touch with me on david@westprime.co.uk for any further information. David, Westprime

TRANSFERRING PHOTOS TO COMPUTER Question: I was wondering if you could give me some advise. During Christmas time we take a lot of photographs of the family and find it difficult to transfer these over to the computer. Sometimes I lose where these files save and due to the file size, I struggle to get them all stored in an appropriate manner. What advise would you give? Christopher Thomas, Margam Answer: Christopher, when you plug your camera into the computer via the USB lead, you will be prompted with a few options on what to do next. One of those options is “browse files/ folders” - I always select this. The Windows Explorer will open and you should now see all your pictures, depending on what camera you have, the photos might be nestled inside a folder. Once you have found your files, you can change the view by selecting “View” which can be found at towards the top of the Windows Explorer – see screenshot.

email: david@westprime.co.uk with your questions

process, you are now ready to transfer the pictures to your PC. It’s always best to store your photos in the Pictures Folder, which is one of many default folders built into the Windows Operating System. Locate your Pictures folders by opening Windows Explorer and click on the Pictures folders as per screenshot below.

I would now create a new folder for your pictures you want to transfer from your camera, to do this, click the right-hand mouse button just below your existing folders (if you have any) and select New and then select Folder. A folder will appear and you will be able to name it, please type a suitable name for the photos as per example above. Once you have done this, all you need to do is right click on the newly created folder and select the option “Paste”. That’s it, the photos will copy to the folder and you are done. Most modern day PC/Laptops have considerable storage and should be able to accommodate most people’s picture storage needs but if you do take a lot of pictures, I would advise purchasing either an external USB drive or some cloud storage to ensure you never lose your pictures. PROBLEMS WITH MY IMAC Question: I am experiencing problems with my iMac computer of recent, and looking for some help in sorting the issue. Most of the time it functions well but there has been occasions lately where it comes to a halt and then suddenly shuts down. It almost immediately starts back up and functions perfectly well. There has no pattern to this and sometimes this can happen several times in an hour or nothing for weeks. Any help would be much appreciated. Stephen Jones, Bridgend Answer: Stephen, despite the misconception Apple Mac don’t get hit with viruses, they are still prone to virus and malware infections but nowhere near to the same degree as a Windows based PC. To this end, I would suggest using the following two products, which can be downloaded off the internet. The first one is from ESET and is known as ESET Cyber Security, this can be downloaded and run for 30 days free of charge. The second piece of software is Malwarebytes Antimalware for Mac; this has a slightly different approach to the ESET product so as potential to uncover threats, which might be missed by ESET. Use Google to locate and download the products will take you matter of seconds, good luck. DW

BOOK OF THE MONTH The Guilty by David Baldacci Going home can kill you. When Special Agent Will Robie gets the call to make his first visit home since he was a teenager, it’s because his father, the local judge, has been arrested for murdering a man who came before him in court. The small, remote Mississippi town hasn’t changed and its residents remember Robie as a wild sports star and girl magnet. He left a lot of hearts broken, and a lot of people angry. Will and his father, Dan, are estranged, and his mother left years ago. When he visits Dan in jail, he finds that time hasn’t healed old wounds. But then another murder changes everything, and stone-cold killer Robie will finally have to come to grips with his toughest assignment of all. His family. Have your say - email info@seasidenews.co.uk

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR SAY ON CHANGES SWIMMING POOL FOR PORTHCAWL, TO WASTE COLLECTION? FINALLY? I hope that you have taken part in the consultation over changes that need to be made to how Bridgend County Borough Council collects refuse and recycling in the future. The changes are necessary because the current kerbside collection system needs to be upgraded so it can recycle more waste and avoid financial penalties for not meeting the Welsh Government’s new statutory recycling targets. At the moment our target is 58 per cent, but this will increase to 64 per cent in 2019-20, then 70 per cent in 2024-25. If we miss the 64 per cent target even by just one per cent, we will be issued with a penalty of around £100,000. That’s why the system has to change, and why we are consulting on things like altering how often black bags are collected, introducing nappy recycling, providing householders with fresh equipment to maximise recycling and minimise inconvenience, and more besides. Some tough decisions are called for, and we want as many people as possible to have their say so a final scheme can be developed. Find out more by visiting www.bridgend.gov. uk/consultation or your local library before 8th February, calling the consultation team on (01656) 643664 or emailing consultation@bridgend.gov.uk Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

A swimming pool may at last be on the cards for Porthcawl – decades after residents first asked for one. But this will not be a municipal pool paid for and run by BCBC and council taxpayers – like the others in the borough. It is being proposed as part of the £6m Harbourside Maritime Centre, which a local group is pushing forward. It is ironic that it has taken a group of Porthcawl residents to come up with a project that will not only enhance the town as a tourism resort but will also provide a much-needed facility for residents. Directors of the project say that the pool was top of the wish list from residents during a consultation that they held. At last - a consultation that takes on board what people actually want! BCBC could learn a lot from that simple fact because their consultations usually take the form of an information exercise in which they tell people what’s going to happen. There’s still a long way to go before this centre becomes a reality – not least securing the funding needed. But it’s very good news at the start of a new year.

SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

PLANS FOR PORTHCAWL’S NEW SEA DEFENCES CLEAR THE FIRST WAVE MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE ON FLYTIPPING Figures published by StatsWales reveal that the number of flytipping incidents in Bridgend rose from 684 in 2011-12 to 1,086 in 2014-15, an increase of 58%. Fly tipping is a blight on our local communities. Not only is it unsightly, but also dumped rubbish can be hazardous, either because of what has been thrown away, or because of attracting vermin, who may bring disease in their wake. Children are particularly vulnerable, as they may be attracted to play in such locations without realising the dangers. People who dump rubbish are selfish, anti-social individuals who care nothing for their neighbours, or for the local environment, and do it to save a little money. Cowboy builders in particular, who dump rubble, radiators and the like, need to be identified and taken to court. Obviously, the Council must do more to catch and prosecute fly-tippers, but it also needs to consider if its own policies are contributing to the problem. Charging for the removal of bulky household items may seem sensible at first sight, but if the Council is having to pay out more to remove illegally dumped rubbish then the charge will soon become counter-productive if fly-tipping carries on rising at this rate. Peter Black AM Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net www.peterblack.blogspot.com Seaside News | 22

Following news that proposals for replacing the asphalt shoreline at Porthcawl’s town beach with all-new sea defences have cleared the first round of Welsh Government approval, work has moved on to the development phase of the project. With a new ‘terraced’ design identified during public consultation carried out in 2013, you may notice increased activity on the beach in coming months as our engineers will be testing the site to establish what specific works will be necessary. The current sea defences for the town beach prominently feature a large amount of asphalt which was set in place in 1984 to prevent erosion and reduce the chance of waves breaking over the top of the promenade. It has done its job well over the last 30 years, but as further maintenance is now required to ensure it can continue to function effectively, Bridgend County Borough Council is taking the opportunity to look at introducing new, more visually appealing sea defences that are capable of standing up to the elements for the next 100 years. I’m really pleased that our plans have passed the first phase, and I’m sure that residents will be eagerly watching as they develop over the coming year. SAINSBURY’S SCOOP UNDERSTANDING DISABILITY AWARD

As your Regional Assembly Member I want to say congratulations to Darren, Jackie and all the team at Sainsbury’s McArthur Glen for their work within our community - and in particular upon winning the 22nd Annual ‘Understanding Disability’ award for their exceptional efforts to recruit, train and retain members of staff with a learning disability. The work of this store proves that it is wrong to write any person off because they might be perceived as less able to do a job and really has changed the lives of the learning-disabled staff who have become highly valued members of the team. Store Manager Darren tells me that he is proud to be their manager, and it is clear to see why, since he runs a dedicated and motivated team. It is wrong that people who are perceived as disabled – and very often perception is the real problem – have been written off as somehow less able to play and full and equal part in the world of work. News THE CASE FOR SINGING Let me start by wishing all readers and staff at the Seaside News a very happy new year. In my job I am very lucky to be asked to attend some pretty special events. Many of the most memorable include some form of live music and singing. Something about live music always puts a smile on my face, hearing people singing together is so elevating and completely captures my attention. It’s not just me that benefits! The Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education at the University of London, Professor Graham Welch, has looked at the health benefits of singing for the past 30 years. He says that singing has many physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygen in the blood stream. There are also psychological benefits because of the positive effect in reducing stress levels; even better, singing in a group as well as alone gives an increased sense of community and belonging. Though we all watch singing on television there is no comparison to watching in real life. There are many fantastic choirs in Bridgend, I encourage you all to go along to one and join in or simply watch a performance- you will feel uplifted! A FUTURE FOR JENNINGS Happy New Year to you all! In November 2015, I was delighted to attend the Porthcawl Townscape Heritage Initiative Open Day at the Jennings Building on Porthcawl seafront. It was an opportunity to not only hear about exciting new proposals for the former harbourside warehouse, but also to meet the developers and to study new proposals. The event was also an opportunity to hear about how Townscape Heritage funding has been helping to regenerate Porthcawl. There were presentations from Cllr Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development at Bridgend Council and Andrew Jones, Manager, Regeneration Projects and Built Environment at Bridgend Council. Cllr Smith told us that the Townscape Heritage Initiative scheme is making a total of £1.3 million available until 2019 to renovate and refurbish buildings within the ‘historic heart’ of Porthcawl. I had never been inside the Jennings Building before and I was really interested to see inside. There has been much discussion about its future use and it was good to talk to the developers who were keen to highlight their new plans for the Building. Their proposals involve seeking full planning permission and listed building consent for the change of use, conversion and external alterations to the former Jennings Warehouse to create restaurants, café bar, community room and 13 live/ work residential units. Planning and Listed Building Consent applications have been submitted. I also had the opportunity to look inside the Pilots’ Lookout Tower and The Customs House building. I have walked past these buildings many times but never gone inside. Both have recently been restored thanks to THI grant aid.

MOVES AFOOT TO CELEBRATE OUR EURO-BOUND WALES FOOTBALL TEAM The Wales football team could get an official send-off to the European Championships, following an approach I have made to Presiding Officer Rosemary Butler. I have asked for an event to be organised by the Assembly involving supporters to mark the achievement of the Chris Coleman-led team in qualifying for the tournament in France next June. In a letter from the Presiding Officer, Dame Rosemary told me: “I am also immensely proud of the national football team’s success in reaching a major football tournament for the first time in nearly 60 years and would appreciate an opportunity to welcome them to the Senedd. “My officials are holding tentative discussions with their counterparts in the Welsh Government to host a reception for Chris Coleman and his team prior to their departure to France, as described in your letter.” It is crucial that our superb fans, many of whom will be travelling to France next year, have the opportunity to send the team off with the good wishes and support of the nation. Any event in Cardiff Bay must involve supporters and not just politicians in suits meeting the team. BETHAN JENKINS AM Plaid Cymru www.bethanjenkins.org

BRIDGEND’S EXCESSIVE PEDESTRIANISATION REVERSED IMMEDIATELY Along with Suzy Davies AM and Bridgend’s local traders, I have been campaigning relentlessly to scrap the excessive pedestrianisation in parts of Bridgend town centre, namely Queen Street, Dunraven Place and Market Street, and to allow some on-street parking within the area described. I am very concerned about the declining state of our town centre. One in five shops are now closed. It is heartbreaking to see this happening before our eyes with no action taken. This desperate situation grew dire when the new development at the car park next to the RHIW Shopping Centre started as access to the shops has become enormously difficult for pedestrians. Some traders approached me to highlight the significant decline in revenues that they have experienced. After raising the issue many times in recent years, our campaign urged Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) again in October to immediately scrap the excessive pedestrianisation in parts of the town centre so that traders can make the most out of the busy shopping period over Christmas. Unfortunately, BCBC is still dragging its feet over the matter. BCBC must act now before it is too late! George Jabbour AM Welsh Conservative

MOST DISTANT OBJECT IN SOLAR SYSTEM Researchers have discovered an icy object, designated V774104, which is three times farther away than Pluto and is the most distant object ever seen in the Solar System. The record was previously held by the ‘dwarf planet’ Eris, which was found in 2003. Eris is located well beyond the Kuiper Belt, the home to Pluto and thousands of other icy bodies. The extreme remoteness of V774104 suggests that its orbit may have remained undisturbed for billions of years. The object could be one of thousands of distant objects that are thought to form what is known as the Oort cloud (a sphere of icy objects surrounding the Solar System). To date, only two objects are known to lay in the inner Oort cloud, one called Sedna and another nicknamed Biden. Sedna never comes closer to the Sun than twice Pluto’s distance. The newly found object will join the other two scientifically fascinating objects residing in the inner Oort cloud. The team of astronomers also discovered about a dozen other objects that are also probably in the Oort Cloud but they travel slowly, gathering orbital data about them takes a long time. LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS

First and most importantly Porthcawl Lions Club would like to apologise to all the children who were so disappointed by Santa’s absence from his grotto in the museum on the afternoon of Sunday December 6th. Unfortunately he got caught up in the festivities in Dock Street and couldn’t get away. He is very sorry, but there was nothing he could do about it. December is a busy time for the club with the grotto, the tea party and the fun run, but more about those next month. Members did take time to celebrate at their annual Christmas dinner at the Atlantic where, after a very enjoyable meal, Santa called in with presents for all the ladies. Everyone was then entertained by a performance of “Off-White and the Seven Shades of Grey!” Planning for 2016 is already underway and the first event is a Burns’ Night supper in the Hi-Tide on Friday January 29th tickets £25 from the museum or any Lion. Also, already being planned are the annual May Fayre on Bank Holiday Monday and the classic car rally, probably in late July or early August. All members of Porthcawl Lions Club would like to thank you all for your support during the past year and look forward to your continued support in 2016. Meanwhile the club wishes you all a very happy and peaceful new year. John Cosson

FEATURES HANDBELL RINGING AT PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB

On 2nd December Porthcawl Stroke Club were delighted that Gilgal Church Porthcawl, Hand Bell Ringers, under the leadership of Shirley Kenifick, gave a truly wonderful performance of Christmas carols, played out through the usage of hand bells. It is no easy task, the ladies have to wear special gloves, which have grips on them, so that they don’t slip, otherwise they could lose the tune to the music. The bells come in varies sizes, some which are heavy to hold. The performance was opened by Avis Watkins, who gave us an insight to the learning of Hand Bell ringing, how they came about and also how some Christmas carols had their names and who composed them - very interesting and informative. Freda Rodgers song solo, ‘I Believe’. Is there no end to this ladies talent! Freda is involved with so many local activities, I can’t believe she has time to learn yet another skill. Gaynor Barnfield read out a lovely poem, from a late family member, this was about three candles, how the light of Lord, shone on the world and the true meaning of Christmas. Those ladies really gave an enchanted, enjoyable Christmas performance. On behalf of the Porthcawl Stroke Club, we would like to thank all the ladies and may God Bless you with his light this Christmas. Barbara Matthews Left of the picture is the leader of the Bell ringers, Shirley Kenifick, third in from the left is Freda Rodgers, next to Freda is Avis Watkins and at the far right is Gaynor Barnfield.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Well folks, here we are again – the beginning of a new year. As we look forward to the New Year, with our diaries, I imagine we will have all sorts of fresh ideas and New Year’s resolutions. I can only speak from personal experience that any New Year’s resolution I have made over the years has been totally trumped by a new life in Jesus. At least for the reason of how God promises to sustain you through the pressures of life as we look to him in faith. But there is so much more. As they say, “the benefits of knowing God are out of this world”. In closing I would like to encourage people not to get confused about who the real God is and what true religion is as we watch world events taking place. God is good and full of love! In fact, you will not hear about this on the news, but many people in the world (particularly in the near east) are turning to Jesus for a new start, as he appears to them in dreams. It’s a bold statement but I believe with all my heart that turning to the real Jesus in humility is the answer for all the problems of humanity! Neil Harvey

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH January is named after the Roman god of gates and doorways, Janus; who is depicted as having two faces, one looking forward, the other backward. Sometimes the beginning of a new year feels like that for us as we review the year now past and peer into the future of the new one just underway. In the important transitions in the course of life’s journey, we rarely go instantly from what was to things new. There’s inevitably an in-between time when things seldom make much sense. I experienced this when, at the age of forty-two, I became a father for the first time. The words ‘culture shock’ barely do justice to how I felt. So I am grateful to read in Psalm 121 that God keeps watch at our times of “going out and coming in,” our times of ending and beginning, and all that is between the two. In such times, when everything else may seem up for grabs, one thing is not: God’s love and presence. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year. FEATURES BAVO ANNUAL AWARD CEREMONY

CHARITY NEEDS DAFFODIL VOLUNTEERS

In recognition of the significant contribution volunteers make to our community, Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations recently held their annual Bridgend County Borough Volunteer Achievement Awards 2015 at the Heronston Hotel in Bridgend. Compared by Lee Jukes from Bridge FM, special guests included Janice Gregory AM, Huw Irranca Davies MP, Jayne James – Mid Glamorgan High Sherriff, The Vocalmotion school choir and soloist Emily March from Ysgol Brynteg. Volunteers take on a wide range of tasks, giving up their time to make their community a better place, yet often receiving little, if any recognition for their commitment and energy. BAVO’s Chief Executive, Heidi Bennett said: “With more nominations coming through, the task of the judging panel was particularly difficult this year. There are thousands of fantastic volunteers in Bridgend County Borough, two of whom received a WCVA National Award. Volunteers make a real difference to charities and ultimately to people’s lives and we were delighted to be able to recognise their hard work and achievements.” For full details visit the volunteering section of www.bavo.org.uk or call 01656 810400. Jane Savile - BAVO

Marie Curie is appealing for people in South Wales to ‘get behind the daffodil’, by volunteering to collect donations for the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal this February and March. The charity needs volunteers to encourage people in the local community to give a donation and wear a daffodil pin. In Wales, the money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help 150 Marie Curie Nurses to provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones either at home or at the Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth. The appeal has raised more than £73 million in the UK since it began in 1986. Hannah Leckie, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie in South and West Wales, said: “The Great Daffodil Appeal is our biggest annual fundraising campaign, making it possible for Marie Curie Nurses to give care and support when people need it most. Every year, millions of people show their support for our work by giving a donation to wear a daffodil pin. This year is the 30th year of the appeal and we are hoping to raise £8.5 million, so we can continue providing this vital care for local people.” To volunteer to collect for Marie Curie and support the Great Daffodil Appeal, call 01554 759 071, email westwalesfundraising@mariecurie.org.uk or sign up online at mariecurie.org.uk/get-involved/daffodil-appeal/next-appeal

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE LALESTON WI NEWS Vice President Barbara Rees welcomed everyone, including 4 new members, to the December meeting and our Christmas Party. Members were given encouraging news regarding our President Margaret Aylen, after her sudden illness early November. Margaret is a wonderful lady, sorely missed by everyone. All the members sent their love and best wishes for a speedy recovery. Margaret’s husband Graham, their family and friends are all in our thoughts at this time. Travel arrangements for the Carol Festival, Brangwyn Hall, Swansea and our Christmas lunch at The Atlantic Hotel, Porthcawl were given out. Luncheon Club was arranged for 12 January 2016 at The Haywain. A reminder, subscriptions are due January meeting. With excellent food provided by members, our Christmas Party was bound to be a success. The committee supplied wine, games and an extensive range of raffle prizes. Gwyneth Jenkins gave a vote of thanks, for all the committee’s hard work. The next meeting will be held on 7 January 2016 at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). We have held a successful Fayre in aid of the British Lung Foundation and are looking forward to our own Christmas lunch at the Bridgend Catering College. Our November meeting was a craft demonstration organized by Freda Rodger and her craft group and we will shortly be having our splendid Christmas Tea with entertainment by the Gilgal hand bell ringers. PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS

The December meeting was opened with the usual WI business. We were all sorry to hear about our friend and long time member Joyce Pritchard who passed away in November, Joyce was a great character and will be sadly missed. The carol service followed and was officiated by the Rev. Colin Richards, a lovely service with carols and readings. The meeting ended with refreshments. Anita Jeffrey was presented with the Annual Competition Cup, to much applause. The Christmas tree festival at All Saints Church was outstanding. We thank our craft ladies for all their hard work in the preparation of our tree. The Glamorgan WI Federation Carol Festival, held at the Brangwyn Hall was a wonderful occasion, enjoyed by all. The choir and soloists were in fine voice - a good start to Christmas. Our Christmas Party went with a swing, lovely food, great company. The entertainment was provided by two very talented young dancers, Mia Dobbs and Olivia Lester, who gave a fabulous selection of Ballroom dances. For more information contact Pearl on 772657. The Porthcawl Inner Wheel monthly meeting was held on 1st December at the Grove Golf Club. We had a brief business meeting before settling down to enjoy our Christmas Dinner, followed by coffee and mince pies. The meal was a great success. Then President Mary introduced our speaker, Gwyneth Poacher. Gwyneth’s talk was about her personal journey, having children, moving house several times, and coping with a nursing career. It was a very moving and amusing talk as she explained how she became involved with the need for support, help, and encouragement for those facing life-changing illness. She realised that meeting other patients with similar problems and socialising, was important and supportive. Making this possible was a huge challenge, which Gwyneth worked and fought for over many years. It was her determination to go along this road that eventually led to the purchase and development of the Sandville Help Centre, which offers so much to many patients with needs beyond medication. Many of our members later spoke of the wonderful support, which they and their families had received at the Sandville. A most informative and entertaining evening closed with a short singsong of Christmas Carols. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent

No meeting this month - it was the time for our Christmas Party. It was held in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill. We had a good turnout of members, all determined to have a good time. We had a free raffle! Pass the parcel which was organised by Enid our secretary the story was about Mrs Wright making cakes and running out of ingredients and sending her husband left and right, and us passing our parcel left and right with the idea that when Enid stopped we would end up with a different parcel than we started with, not rocket science but we had a good laugh. Tea, coffee, and the odd glass of wine flowed plenty of good food and laughter. We all hope you would have had a good Christmas and a happy New Year by the time you read this in the Sea Side News, and if anyone would like to pop in to see us in the New Year we are in the same place and would be pleased to see you. Christmas has sadly been and gone but don’t wait until next year to make gifts to loved ones particularly if you have a potential Inheritance Tax liability. IHT is paid if a person’s estate is worth more than £325,000 when they die and the charge is at a rate of 40% on anything over and above the threshold. If however someone leaves everything they own to their surviving spouse the “spousal exemption” applies meaning that the estate is exempt from IHT. It also means that they haven’t used any of their own IHT allowance which is available to increase the IHT allowance of the second spouse when they die. The second spouse’s estate can be worth up to £650,000 before they owe IHT. If your estate is likely to be subject to IHT you may wish to consider making the following gifts during your lifetime for which IHT would not be payable:1. The estate doesn’t pay IHT on up to £3,000 worth of gifts given away by the deceased in each tax year in the seven years prior to their death (known as the “annual exemption”). Leftover annual exemption can be carried over from one tax year to the next but the maximum exemption is £6,000. 2. There is no IHT due on individual gifts worth up to £250 so you can give as many people as you like up to £250 each in any one tax year but you can’t give someone another £250 if you’ve given them a gift using a different exemption e.g. the £3,000 annual exemption. 3. You can make a gift of any amount if it is part of your normal expenditure out of your income and you can prove that after having made the gift you had enough money to maintain your normal lifestyle. 4. There is no IHT payable on a wedding gift worth up to £5,000 given to a child, £2,500 to a grandchild, and £1,000 given to anyone else. 5. Gifts to charities, qualifying political parties, national bodies for national purposes, or community amateur sports clubs are exempt from IHT. Please also note the “7 year rule” which means that you can make a gift of any value and it will not be subject to IHT provided you survive the gift by more than seven years. Any gifts made less than 7 years before death count towards the IHT threshold. If you would like any more information about making gifts and IHT planning please contact our Estates and Trusts team on 01792 650000.

Finance HELP TO BUY ISA If you’re saving to get onto the property ladder, a Help to Buy: ISA could really make a difference. It’s designed to take advantage of the Help to Buy Scheme and will boost your savings towards a deposit by 25%. If you are 16 or over you can open an account (provided you meet the eligibility criteria) with an initial deposit of up to £1,200 and then make further contributions of up to £200 per calendar month. When you are ready to buy your property, your conveyancer claims your Bonus (25% of your closing balance) from the Scheme to put towards your purchase. So for every £200 you save, the Government will add £50. The minimum Bonus is £400 (on a minimum savings balance of £1,600) and the maximum is £3,000 (on a savings balance of £12,000). The scheme applies to properties in the UK, purchased using a mortgage of up to £250,000 outside London. The Help to Buy: ISA will be available from a range of banks and building societies. The accounts are available to each first time buyer, not each household. This means that if you are planning to buy with your partner, for example, you could receive a government bonus of up to £6,000 towards your first home. Please check whether your solicitor or conveyancer is participating in the Help to Buy: ISA scheme, as they will need to register with the scheme before they can apply for your bonus. BUY-TO-LET BOMBSHELL…BUT WE COULD HELP LANDLORDS Well, Mr Osborne certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons in the Autumn Statement, incurring the wrath of Landlords, large and small, throughout the UK, when he announced a Stamp Duty increase. That said, you need to know the facts, since it’s not all bad news – and we have the facts and possible answers to help you minimise the impact. The whole concept of buy-to-let has been shaken up with the emphasis being shifted towards professional Landlords and Limited Companies and the race by private investors to become limited companies has already started, since this will bring likely tax benefits, especially with regard to proposed increases in stamp duty and the way in which rental income is taxed. We can assist Landlords, especially those with either a small number of properties OR portfolios. Call us with your issues, as time is short before the proposed changes take place. SO, WHAT INTEREST RATE ARE YOU PAYING? At the time of writing, WHICH Magazine has published its findings that around ONE in THREE of all residential mortgage borrowers DO NOT KNOW what the interest rate is on their mortgages, which a worrying situation. In many cases, people seem content to pay what they see as affordable, with the Bank of England base interest rate not having changed since 2009 and unlikely to do so any time soon. HOWEVER, there are rates available which have never been lower so YOU should take a look at your rate and call us for the latest rates available to you, subject to status. You could be paying well over the odds currently and could Seaside News | 34

reduce your monthly outgoings, using any savings for other purposes. One of our enquirers recently saved over £100 per month and many have saved more still – he was happy paying the rate he was on simply because he could afford to do so. He’s now much happier paying less, of course. Call 01656 782545 and see what savings you could make to kick off the New Year! Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT AT BARTHOLEMEW HAWKINS

Firstly by the time this goes to press Santa would hopefully have been and not got stuck in someone’s Chimney. 2015 has been a great year at Bartholomew Hawkins with many new appointments and none of this could be achieved without the ongoing support of our loyal clients. On behalf of us all may I say a huge thank you to readers for their continued support. We also continue to support local sport and charities with ongoing sponsorship of Glamorgan Cricket, Cardiff Blues Rugby, Nathan Cleverly but whilst these individuals are making the headlines we are equally as proud of Porthcawl RFC Under 7’s who remain unbeaten since we agreed to sponsor them. We have raised over the past 12 months over £10,000 for the charity #Staystrongforows – a charity set up to support ex Wales rugby Star Owen Williams who suffered a life changing injury whilst playing for Cardiff Blues in Singapore. This follows our efforts last year to raise nearly £7,500 for Velindre Cancer Charity. Next Year will see us support Ty Hafan and we would welcome your attendance at our charity event in September. These are exiting times at Bartholomew Hawkins with a further 4 appointments to commence at the start of 2016. May I therefore take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and should any advice be needed in 2016 or beyond then call today for your free consultation.

IF THE FESTIVE HOLIDAYS HAVE YOU LONGING FOR RETIREMENT, YOU NEED TO READ ON… With a little over three months to go until the new tax year and the reduction of the lifetime allowance (LTA) from £1.25 million to £1 million it is crucial that you review your options. For example: a 45 year old with total pension funds of £400,000 with the investment fund growing at 5% per annum gross may need to consider an application for Fixed Protection 2016 if they were not to access their fund until state pension age. Not fully funded your pension? Then it may be possible to sweep up the last four years allowances and contribute a maximum of £220,000 in the current tax year through the use of cash flow or commercial property contributions. Making the most of the opportunity to retain the lifetime allowance at £1.25m could save tax in the long term of £137,500. Not sure of how much your pension fund will be worth by the time you reach retirement? Then contact us to discuss your options at an initial no obligation meeting. Please contact Gwyn Williams on 01656 867167 or gwyn@cstwealth.co.uk

Garden BIRD WATCH: GREAT TIT

I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden Bird Watch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. The Great Tit, our largest tit species, can be recognised by its black head and chin, white cheeks, yellow breast and a black stripe running down the front. Dominant males have the broadest stripe. The most easily recognisable Great Tit call is that of ‘teacher teacher’, but this is just one of many. Amazingly, the shape and size of the bird’s bill changes during the course of the year. In the spring and summer it is slender to suit its diet of insects but in the winter it becomes shorter and deeper to better cope with a diet of seeds. The species feed on sunflower hearts, peanuts (always provide the latter in a metal mesh feeder) and fat blocks. GBW data show that that tit species use gardens more in winter when natural food is depleted. If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden help monitor them with BTO GBW. Contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk. Amanda Skull: 07952 758293 gbw@hiafi.co.uk www.bto.org/gbw Follow me on Twitter @amanda_skull Photo: Great Tit: Nic Forbes

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

To have an article in this section email: info@seasidenews.co.uk

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB Hopeful everyone enjoyed Christmas, and is now looking forward to planning for the spring. There is still time to plant some extra bulbs as long as the ground is frost-free. Days may be short and dreary, but the garden is far from lacking in interest. The bulbs planted earlier in September are already pushing through the cold and damp earth. Lovely snowdrops, dwarf iris, and the determined little crocus all are welcome signs of the approaching new season. Trees, hedges and shrubs already in bud, make up the framework of the garden. Winter is no reason to neglect window boxes and containers, winter-flowering pansies seem to come into their own and to me anyway, seem to enjoy “showing off” while not so hardy plants have faded .If weather permits there are shrubs that can be pruned, Buddleia, Rose of Sharon, and Spiraea, although I am told it is advisable to leave the less hardy such as hydrangea and fuchsia until any danger from severe frosts have passed. The monthly lectures start again on Monday January 11th Ivor Mace will be telling us all about Roses something to look forward to. Gwen Bradford

NOW IS THE TIME TO LANDSCAPE With all the rain recently it’s difficult to think about the garden and what needs to be done. However, winter is a great time to look at landscaping your property, as there is little flora and fauna to disturb and you certainly wont need to delay any outdoor BBQs! A current project we have been working on has incorporated a great product called Cedagravel, which stabilises chippings up to 14mm. A hexagonal “honeycomb” system is installed into the required area then the gravel is placed on top. Once the system is completed its possible to drive on, is buggy & wheelchair friendly and will prevent any weed growth as it contains a membrane. Ecogreen is a recommended installer of cedagravel and we would be happy to discuss and questions you may have about this product or any other landscaping requirements. Please see our advert on page 9. Pete Ryall ecogreengardens.co.uk

January is named after Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions, but he does have two faces and looks back as well as forward which is what a good gardener does (learning from last year’s mistakes!) there is always something to be done in the garden although you might not want to be working outside at this time of year as frost, rainfall and winds are common, so just try to do the basic pruning and tidying. It may be getting cold in the air but the soil is still retaining some warmth so it’s time to plant that hedge or tree you have always wanted. You can put early potatoes to chit in egg boxes ready to plant in March. (You can do this in the warm!) Don’t attempt to dig heavy wet soil, it’s not fun and you can ruin the soil structure, so if it sticks to your boots, leave it alone! Did you know – January in the northern hemisphere is seasonally equivalent to July in the southern hemisphere, where would you rather be? Gardening at this time of year includes the wondrous seed catalogue, warm fire, cup of coffee (or a beer) marvellous! Happy New Year. Chris Early Seaside News | 38

Health FINDING HEALTHY FOOD

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Anything that is packaged, boxed, canned, jarred, or has a label with more than one ingredient (especially any that you can’t readily pronounce) listed has been processed. That means something about that food has been added, taken away, or refined to make it edible, shelf stable, and marketable. Manufacturers don’t care about your diet or desire to eat the healthiest foods. They want your money and will use pretty pictures and fancy words to get what they want. It works every day, with thousands of foods, and their marketing campaigns result in astronomical profits. Fresh Foods Aren’t Always the Healthiest Foods Fresh food has its own set of obstacles. In your local market, 90% or more of the fresh produce has been treated in some way. Oranges are dipped in food colouring to make them bright and consistently orange. Apples are waxed and polished like brand new cars to make them universally appealing. Unless it’s been labelled ‘organic’ or “non-GMO,” it’s been processed just like packaged foods. Perhaps not to the same extent, but in ways you don’t want or need to be consuming. These are not the healthiest foods you can select. Commercial agriculture is a multi-billion dollar industry. Big corporations and pesticide industries have figured out many ways to corner the market and we’ve allowed them to do it. Sadly, the fallout will affect many generations beyond our lifetimes. Seeds modified in a lab are planted into soil that’s been chemically enhanced and will continue to be treated as the seeds absorb artificial nutrients during development. Plants grow under a shower of pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides to abate the weeds that refuse to die even in the presence of such adversity. Food is rinsed in water containing bleach and bathed in wax to kill (some) bacteria and make it look pretty for consumers. Read more at www.naturalnews.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

This month’s article focuses on fungal infections. You may have read previous articles outlining the importance of general foot care and the prevention of foot conditions. If general foot hygiene is not observed, conditions such as fungal nail infection and athlete’s foot can develop. Prevention: * Keep your feet clean and dry * Clip your nails to keep them short * Avoid walking barefoot in public pools/showers * Replace old footwear that could be contaminated with fungi * Treat athlete’s foot as soon as possible to avoid the infection spreading to your nails Symptoms: Fungal Nail Infection Athlete’s Foot The nail may appear: * Discolored * Thickened – often nails are difficult to cut, as they can become an unusual shape or texture * Brittle or crumbly– pieces may break off and come away completely Skin may appear: * dry and red * scaly and flaky * itchy * sore * macerated between the toes (due to excessive moisture) * covered in small blisters Treatments: * Antifungal treatments are available from your pharmacist or GP * Your foot health professional can help if the fungal infection has spread to your nails by reducing the thickness and cutting back the nails Lee Giles First Choice Footcare Tel: 07815848339

WHAT CAUSES SKIN BLEMISHES AND HOW EFFECTIVELY CAN THEY BE TREATED? At Vale Laser, based in Talbot Green, we can effectively treat most skin damage in an affordable, pain free treatment. Thread veins, spider veins, sunspots & age spots and acne are the most commonly known skin damage. THREAD VEINS/SPIDER VEINS are caused by exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures, high blood pressure, pregnancy, pro-longed standing, alcohol, vigorous exercise, hormones, they can be hereditary but really are caused by anything that puts continued pressure on the vessel wall causing it to weaken and break. SUNSPOTS & AGESPOTS are caused by sun exposure or sunbeds, and is where the melanin (a dark pigment) becomes visible on the surface of the skin. The depth of this pigmentation can vary and can be a result of sun damage many years ago. It is still easy to remove but may need more than one treatment. ACNE is caused by hormonal imbalance, stress & food allergies. IPL is an ideal drug free treatment for mild and moderate inflammatory acne as it is easy to treat and is pain free. It is also a wonderful solution to recurring boils or pimples. Call us for a FREE CONSULTATION today. Mandy Davies Vale Laser Clinic Tel: 01443 223352 Seaside News | 40

Arts BRIDGEND SINGER 6TH IN VOICE OF THE PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR REPORT VALLEYS Christmas is behind us and we look forward to 2016. The After 100 applications, 13 weeks, and 3 months of performances, Ahnuh Valentine was crowned 6th in the Voice Of The Valleys Final in November. The Voice Of The Valleys is one of the largest singing competitions in Wales and is in its 4th season. Ahnuh Valentine represented Bridgend in the competition as the only finalist from the area. She wowed the judges in the final, resulting in a full standing ovation off the 5 judges and the spectators. Ahnuh states, “I had a great experience throughout the past few weeks and have definitely grown as an artist. I have made some great friends throughout the competition and I am thankful to have reached the final in the first place. Thank you to everybody who supported me and will continue to support me. I am so happy to have had the experience to show my skills as an artist, here’s too a happy future filled with singing.” Head to Ahnuh’s website - www.ahnuhvalentine.com to check out her performance in the VOTV Final and support a local singer.

choir had a good 2015 with an increase in membership and, in September, a successful annual concert. Unfortunately John Owen Jones, who was booked for our 2016 Annual concert, has had to withdraw due to other commitments, but we will find a replacement guest of similar standing. Last years’ successful open night is to be repeated again this year and will be held on Friday February 5th from 7:30 pm at Arlington road Church. If you are male and enjoy the company of others why not come along, you don’t need previous experience and don’t worry about not being able to read music, most of us can’t. Certainly don’t say you can’t sing, everybody can sing and in a choir it’s the collective sound that’s important. Mair, our MD will suggest the section that best suits your voice and you will be mentored. Entertaining audiences is rewarding and often raises much needed funding for deserving charities. We also often take the sound of Wales outside the Principality - next September we visit Scotland. Come along and talk to us, you have nothing to lose John Williams Porthcawl Male Choir

BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR ROUND UP

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Hope your Xmas went well, mine didn’t. Firstly, I offered to turn on the Porthcawl Xmas light but was turned down, as my £10 appearance fee was too high for the town hall Xmas budget. Secondly, while having my new bathroom fitted, the builders removed a false wall to find a skeleton with a large medallion around its neck saying “1912 Hide and Seek Champion”! However, myself and mates Murf and Steve Flett did the final leg of Planet Rock D.J. Wyatt’s charity cycle ride from London to Trecco Bay for their Planet Rockstock Festival. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend, but congratulations to Wyatt for raising over £30,000 for the Calm Zone charity. I also missed “Sex” anniversary gig at the Hi Tide, so sorry Phil but will see you in action again. Look out locally for acoustic singer/songwriters Rebecca Hurn and Jordan Marks, Bridgend’s “The Blims” and new band “Last of Us”. Hopefully the series “Rock Talk” that I’m in will be out in April, and I’m also writing and recording new material and bringing out a “best of” CD as well as a DVD of vintage “Secret Army” videos. Keep your calls and texts coming with all your local music news. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag, back in the studio again Seaside News | 42

By the time you read this, the choristers of BMC will have completed their busy festive programme. From a traditional Advent concert at St Mary’s Catholic Church to a Southerndown Golf Club Carol Concert, both with capacity audiences and then on Chepstow Races. This was a first for the Choir, singing in the Parade Ring & entertaining those in stands and terraces, on the occasion of the Coral Welsh Grand National. Also appearing at Chepstow were Only Men Aloud and Rebecca Evans. January will see the completion of the Choir’s latest CD, which it’s planned to launch for St David’s Day. Look out for more details in the February issue. David T Burt, Media Officer www.bridgendmalechoir.co.uk

Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW In early December a film colleague asked me if I would like to go to the Taliesin Arts Centre in Swansea to watch a screening of the 1945 film “Brief Encounter”, but unfortunately work commitments meant that I wasn’t available. Which was a pity, because it is, in my opinion, one of the truly great British films, directed by David Lean, and I have yet to see it on the big screen. So I did the next best thing, and watched it one evening on DVD. David Lean went on to direct epic films such as “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Doctor Zhivago”, for which he is now mainly remembered – he is one of cinema’s greatest directors, and received a knighthood for his contribution to cinematic art – but I think “Brief Encounter” is his best work, and I would urge anyone who has not seen it to do so. Sit back and enjoy a wonderfully romantic tale brought vividly to life by Robert Krasker’s atmospheric black & white photography and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no 2 – believe me, it doesn’t get any better than that. I always like to hear your views, so let me know what you think. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Tel: 07510 934299 Picture: Anthony Hontoir

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We have had some great presentations this month, including a wildlife talk from Jenny Hibbert. We also held Club Competition One, which is split into two sections, Prints and Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Members could enter two images into each competition. Dennis Russ judged both competitions, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique. In the Print Section four prints achieved maximum points (20) from Dave Jones, Geoff Baker and Jeff Evans. The eventual winner was Dave Jones for “Ironed Out”. Four prints scored 19 points from Geoff Baker, Ken Needs, Martyn Derbyshire and Richard Craze. Three prints scored 18 points from Geoff Sherriff, Martyn Derbyshire and Richard Craze. In the Digital Section the winner was “Little Interest” by Dave Jones. Second place with 19 points was Jeff Evans. Eight images scored 18 points for third place from David Morgan, Celia Madge, Geoff Baker, Geoff Sherriff, Glyn Edmunds, Patricia Kendrick and Richard Craze. Congratulations to Dave for his well deserved win of both competitions. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. POEMS PORTHCAWL PARKRUN

THE PHOTO ALBUM

The thin and fat, the big and small, Will gather there to run, walk, crawl. Come and join in - to the Rest, Partake with us the Parkrun test, We’ll guide you to a personal best.

Dusty old book, as the pages I turn You are there, No longer with wrinkles, all worn down with care First a bride, then a mother, This dear Grandma I knew With Great-gran and aunts, and cousins all too, You are there, oh yes, you are there.

The marshals help you with their smiles, Along the way of just three miles. You’re sure to see a friendly face, Someone to help you set the pace, They’ll lie to you “It’s not a race!” Whether plodder, racing snail or snake, You’ll earn an extra slice of cake. Son, daughter, family and friend, All run together to the end A flying start to their weekend. So log on now and print your code, Follow the mantra of this Ode. You needn’t be a at your peak, A fanatic, or fitness freak, We’ll welcome you along next week. Will Edwards, Porthcawl

THE NEW YEAR It’s count down time its New Years eve The old year ends and now must leave, I clasp your hand and you clasp mine Whilst we await the bells to chime, Auld Lang Syne is the New Year song We sing it loud we sing it strong, There is joy and happiness everywhere With food and drink for all to share, There are parties here there are parties there There are parties almost everywhere, With a Happy New Year our greetings repeat With a shake of the hand or a kiss on the cheek, The parties continue untill early morn Daylight has broken with first New Years dawn, The back door is opened for the New Year to part The front door is opened for the New Year to start, The old year has gone, it’s been sad for some But let’s look ahead, better times will surely come, Life is to short for kindness to end So reach out your hand and welcome a friend, We bid the old year a sad goodbye As the New Year bells begin to chime. Basil Walters, Cefn Glas, Bridgend. Seaside News | 48

How the memories stir as I turn on the pages Of long ago joys in those now distant ages But the book’s put away for some distant tomorrow ‘till there’s none to remember our joys or our sorrow Or even to care Who was there. But we can be there in a book being written Tis the Lamb’s book of Life, secure up in heaven Without spot, without wrinkle, our old bodies made new Youthful and joyful we’ll stand before You Who calls us to drink of the water of life Death you have conquered, and banished all strife So we’ll not fear the future, or of being forgotten We’ll be there, trusting Jesus Ever there Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

THE LITTLE PIECE OF CRUMPLED SILVER PAPER

It was Christmas day some years ago with excitement in the air When we opened her presents and then found That she couldn’t play with them and it didn’t seem quite fair That she would always be so cruelly bound To a life without the toys that all children adore And then we heard a new sound that meant so much more A crackle from the little piece of crumpled silver paper The expensive gifts didn’t matter to this special little girl Her joy came from quite another caper As the parcels and the packaging slowly started to unfurl All she wanted was the silver wrapping paper You see, she could grasp it tight to make a funny noise instead And so it fast became a dear friend And she holds it close beside her even when she goes to bed And the lesson to be learned is, in the end… That happiness is not always found in gifts so big and costly And often simple things can bring the joy you need Contentment is a state of mind and the choice is yours mostly To be content with what you’ve got and with every little deed Or, to always be in want and never satisfied And so for me the real belief will never taper That the truth of life is clear and very closely tied To the little piece of crumpled silver paper. (Emily has Cerebral Palsy) John Weaver, Emily’s Dad.

Her room is not the sort of room you’d quite expect to find For a little girl whose love of life is clear No toys or games or bats or balls or fun things of that kind No bicycle or skateboard will appear But the little piece of crumpled silver paper Her room is cheerful and bright with pictures everywhere A pump to feed her through the night and a big adapted chair Though pretty dolls sit on the shelf and teddies on her bed She cannot play with them herself so she holds them tight instead And the little piece of crumpled silver paper

Sport FUNDING AND TRAINING SUPPORT Halo Leisure and Bridgend County Borough Council are continuing to show their commitment to developing sporting talent, by calling for applications to its Halo Sport Foundation scheme. The Foundation (run in conjunction with the national GLL Sport Foundation and supported by Sport Wales) gives ambitious sportsmen, women and children in the borough, crucial support for their future. It offers thousands of pounds worth of funding and free training opportunities to local people (of all ages). It is all about investing in local talent; supporting local athletes and inspiring local communities. “As a not for profit organisation and registered charity whose primary aim is to provide the local community with active leisure facilities, we are delighted to be able to offer support through the Sport Foundation for another year,“ said Simon Gwynne, Partnership Manager. “We see it as an opportunity to put something back into the community that has supported us so well.” Research shows 80% of these aspiring sports men and women have little funding to support their ambitions. “Many of the county’s most talented sports people struggle to meet the rising costs of competition”, said Simon “The Foundation will assist local talented athletes towards achieving their full sporting potential by helping to reduce some of the financial burden of sporting costs.” The Sport Foundation is currently supporting 114 local sports people (able bodied and disabled) across a variety of sports including triathlon, swimming, shooting, gymnastics, table

tennis, judo, rugby, waterpolo, netball, basketball, taekwondo, athletics, rowing, surfing, canoeing, squash, tennis and football. They use our gyms, group exercise classes, pools, racket sports courts and indoor and outdoor sports pitches to keep fit and prepare for their next competitive event. Rising local sporting stars have until 20th February 2016 to apply for a share of the Sport Foundation support. Applications open on 20th December 2015. Application forms and supporting information can be found at www.halosportfoundation.org.uk

GROVE GOLF CLUB CHARITY DONATION PORTHCAWL RUNNING CLUB TO RNIB (CYMRU) The Grove Golf Club presentation night was held on Friday 27th November. During their year as Captains, the Club Captain, Neil Summers and Ladies Captain, Vicky Ford decided to combine their fundraising efforts towards one charity which they agreed would be the RNIB Cymru (Royal National Institute for the Blind in Wales). During the course of the presentation evening, a cheque for £9484.40 was accepted on behalf of the Charity by Carol Mckinlay, the Area Fundraising Manager at RNIB Cymru. The donation was made possible by events held throughout the year, including the Porthcawl Christmas morning swim, raffles, a Ladies Ascot Day held at The Grove and a very successful Joint Captain’s Charity Day. The RNIB Cymru support people with sight loss in Wales. Neil and Vicky were very grateful for all the donations and support in their efforts to raise such a large amount for such a worthwhile cause. PCSO’S LINK UP WITH LOCAL WELSH SCHOOL PCSO’S Kyle Maiden, Richard Couch and Richard Matthews have linked in with the local welsh school in North Cornelly - Ysgol y Ferch o’r sger and arranged to coach pupils in years 4,5 and 6 after school every Thursday for football practice. The school doesn’t have any after school sports clubs so it’s a great chance to us to link in and engage with the children whilst they have fun, keep active and learn how to be part of a team. If your New Year’s Resolution is to get fitter, run a race or improve your running times then why not come along on a Monday or Wednesday evening at 6.30pm to Porthcawl Rugby Club and give running or walking a go. With a range of small groups we cater for walkers, joggers, slow runners and those runners looking to improve their times. ‘Parkruns’ are now widespread events across the globe - free timed 5k runs at 9am on a Saturday to promote running, health and fitness. We are very lucky to have, what I think is one of the best ‘Parkruns’ in the world on our doorstep, and we make an effort to run the 1st park run of every month as a club. We also have a fancy dress themed run together for the Elvis Festival (picture attached). One of our members - local taxi driver Mike Davies achieved his 100th park run in the summer this year, and some fizz added to the celebrations on the day. So, with something for everyone, why not give us a go? Will Edwards, Assistant Coach

SWANS FANS CYCLE FROM CITY TO CITY Swansea City AFC’s charity are back in the saddle after announcing their second fundraising bike ride. Coinciding with the Swans’ final game of the season, the #CityToCity ride will see an army of Jacks cycle in aid of The Swans Community Trust. Spanning three days of dedication, the 190 mile ride kicks off under the shadow of the Etihad on May 12th, before culminating on the final day of the season when the Club take on Manchester City. Charlotte Rogers, the Trust’s Fundraising Officer, said; “This is a great opportunity for our supporters to get involved, get active and raise funds. All proceeds raised will enable us to continue to deliver our health, education and youth engagement projects that aim to improve the lives of children, young adults and families in South Wales.” With accommodation, a match day ticket, bus travel to Manchester, day time drinks, breakfast, specifically prepared meals and snacks, as well as a commemorative jersey included in the registration fee of £150, the riders will also be entitled to 15% discount on bike and kit purchases at Action Bikes Swansea. Riders up to the challenge can register online at: www.sarnhelenevents.co.uk/city-to-city-charity-bike-ride-2016/ Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

This year we have also enjoyed some fundraising events such as a Halloween Disco and a Rugby World Cup fund raising day. We hope to do more during the rest of the season and everyone’s continued support is massively appreciated. We hope the boys will not over-indulge over the festive period and come back rearing to go! Hope you all had a lovely Christmas, and Happy New Year to everyone. Geraint Evans
