BOOK OF THE MONTH Hold Back The Stars by Katie Khan This is a gorgeous read that is part sci-fi, part romance, part Hunger Games and part Romeo and Juliet. It is set in a near future and Carys and Max have fallen out of the mother ship and are stuck in space with 90minutes of air remaining… Told in flashbacks and real-time this is an engaging read which defies categorisation. Whatever your interest we have books to enjoy and to educate, some on the shelves and many more to order online, over the phone and in person. We also run a number of regular activities for children or adults: just pop in to find out more.

Last month we hosted Porthcawl Library’s annual Book Quiz where Year 6 pupils from the local schools competed for the cup. After a very tense Quiz, where very few points were lost even after a tie breaker round, we announced joint winners. So congratulations to Poppy and Sam of West Park Primary and Lucia and Grace of St Clare’s School and thank you to everyone who took part. Next month we will be holding an Easter Egg Hunt from the 10-13th April which children can take part in any time we are open. Porthcawl Library is involved in the commemoration of the sinking of the Samtampa and we will be hosting a special Storytime and Craft with the RNLI on the 22 April at 2.30pm as well as being involved in events at The Grand Pavilion on the 15th April and at the Senedd on the 3rd May. Happy Easter and hope to see you soon. Elaine Winstanley Porthcawl Library: Tel: 01656 754845 Email: porthcawl.library@awen-wales.com

70 YEARS ON WE REMEMBER THE MARITIME TRAGEDY AT SKER POINT

A service will be held at All Saints Church, Porthcawl at 3pm on Saturday 22nd April in memory of those lost at Sker Point seventy years ago. Porthcawl’s combined rescue services made up of Porthcawl Fire Service, Porthcawl Unit of UK Coastguard Agency and Porthcawl RNLI together with Porthcawl Museum will remember the tragedy of the liberty ship ‘SS Samtampa’ and the RNLI’s Mumbles lifeboat ‘Edward, Prince of Wales’. Crews of both vessels, 47 in total, perished in a raging storm that swept up the Bristol Channel on 23rd April 1947. Just a few months ago Porthcawl’s RNLI lifeboat was launched to rescue two fishermen whose boat had been washed onto the rocks at Sker Point. It was a winters evening with waves washing over the rocks, there was no moon so virtually no light at all. Manned by local volunteer crew the casualties were found and made secure until they were winched to safety by a SAR helicopter, backup was also provided by our colleagues from The Mumbles lifeboat who were on passage to Sker. In reflection it was thought that this rescue had been one of the most dangerous for our crews in many years. Spokesperson Ross Martin a deputy launch authority at Porthcawl Lifeboat said, “By contrast, it is almost impossible for us to imagine the conditions during that storm 70 years ago. The Samtampa had sailed from its home port of Middlesbrough a few days earlier and entered the Bristol Channel during a storm. Although shelter was sought off the Devon coast, but anchors could not hold the vessel and she was blown across the channel towards the South Wales coast. A distress call was made and the Seaside News | 14

village of The Mumbles lifeboat was launched into the teeth of the storm to aid the crew aboard the drifting ship. The Samtampa was washed onto rocks at Sker Point and was broken in two. Attempts to rescue the crew from the shore failed and all crew perished. The Mumbles lifeboat never returned to the village across Swansea Bay and an upturned lifeboat, ‘Edward, Prince of Wales’, was found on Sker rocks the following morning. The crew, all from The Mumbles had perished during the night in their efforts to save the casualties on board the Liberty ship”. It is expected that relatives of the fateful casualties of the tragedy at Sker will travel down from the Peterborough and The Mumbles area to take part in the church service to commemorate those lost. PORTHCAWL DOCKS Opened on 22nd July 1867, the new Porthcawl Docks became the chief seaport between Swansea and Cardiff, until 1895. It’s development as an industrial seaport is evident from the increased figures of 1871; 165,000 tons of coal exported and 700 vessels used the dock. They were largely sailing ships engaged in coastal trade; though a sixth of the vessels traded further afield in places such as Valparaiso, Chile. In 1871 William S Martin, a shipbuilder from Cornwall opened a new shipyard, sited at the north end of the Inner Dock, employing 16 men and six boys to build four schooners. The first schooner, ‘Constance Ellen’ however, had an ignominious entry into the sea, or not as it happened. On 6th July 1871 2000 spectators, some having arrived by train, gathered at the quayside for the launch. At 6pm, as planned, the vessel began to slide gracefully into the water, amidst cheers from the shore. When suddenly it got stuck! Even with scores of men pulling ropes and the assistance of the tug ‘Thames,’ it failed to launch. The launch was finally completed a week later, to the relief of all involved. Visit the museum’s Maritime Exhibition from 1st April - 3rd June. Ceri Joseph

EASTER FUN TO SUMMER SUN AT MONKEY MUSIC!

This month we have been celebrating the renewal of our Platinum Flag Status! As part of our Eco-Schools Platinum Assessment, we have been improving the way we record and analyse our utilities to reduce our carbon footprint, developing our beautiful grounds, allotment and meadow areas, raising our Healthy Schools standards by organising Walk to School and Big Pedal events, strengthening our community links and supporting Eco charities. Our Eco Schools assessor said that, “The Platinum Flag is a very impressive achievement and highlights the enthusiasm and commitment that West Park Primary has towards sustainable development. The dedication of the EcoCommittee over many years has been inspirational. The schools application really evidences how integral Eco-Schools is to life at West Park”. To mark the occasion we held a Go-Green Day in support of the Size of Wales charity. Pupils received a whole school assembly about the degeneration of the world’s rainforests followed by an action packed day of workshops linked to the curriculum. Activities were carried out across the whole school including debates about deforestation, campaigns to save endangered species, using science to create rainclouds and numeracy problems to visualise the Size of Wales. I would like to say huge congratulations to the children and stakeholders for working so hard to achieve this worthwhile recognition of West Parks’ commitment to a brighter future for everyone. PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL RETURNS TO THE FAST LANE This month we started to work towards creating our Formula 1 car to race at the regional finals later in the year. After the success of becoming National Champions last year we are aiming high again. We were lucky to have a visit from Chris Harris from Stem Cymru who talked us through aerodynamics and showed us how to use CAD technology to create our car. This year we will set up a track in the school hall and we will be holding a F1 race day in which we will choose the fastest car to represent the school. We have also continued our link with the Sony Technology Centre. We visited the centre to watch the short film we made earlier in the year as part of the Sony Digital Competency Programme. The film then went on to win an award for being the most creative video of 2017! Well done to everyone involved. Seaside News | 16

TRIP TO HARRY POTTER STUDIOS We were given the opportunity to visit Harry Potter Studios, Watford with the cohort of Year 6 pupils who will attend Cynffig School in September as part of our Transition Project. What a day! In school for 7.15am and not home until 10pm! Whilst it was long, it was definitely worth it! An experience of a lifetime! The itinerary was spectacular; we saw the fragile props and outstanding costumes that the actors wore in the films. We witnessed at first hand, the sets that were in the Harry Potter films. Visiting Harry Potter studios allowed us to ride broomsticks just like Harry, Hermoine and Ron! We used ‘green screen’ technology similar to what we have used in school to fly over Hogwarts and play Quidditch! We would like to thank Cefn Cribwr Community Council for kindly donating to the cost as well as the Councils of Pyle and Cornelly. We would like to thank our PTA who generously paid for dinner on the way home. Finally, we would like to thank our teachers for taking us, but they had just as much fun as we did! ST DAVID’S DAY CELEBRATIONS AT CORNELI PRIMARY St David’s Day celebrations were in true Welsh Eisteddfod style. The singing, poetry and dancing were ‘bendigedig’ and we Chaired the Bard, Joshua Harries, with due ceremony! The competition entrants earned points for their Houses, with Mawdlam being the ultimate winner. We had winners too in the Cynffig Comprehensive transition competition - well done Maicy Styles, Rhiannon Elliott and Joshua Morris. The day finished with the eating of delicious Welsh Cakes and a lively Twmpath. Delicious too were the Indian Patties - made by the children and their parents in Class 5. The cooking of this healthy meal was organised by Communities First to mark International School Meals Day and was greatly enjoyed. World Book Day was celebrated by bringing in our favourite book to share in class. Fairtrade Friday saw us dressed in Fairtrade colours while doing some fun activities to learn about this global initiative. Parents also enjoyed a Fairtrade cuppa in the assembly held by Classes 8 and 9. Global Citizenship was also the emphasis when we marked Commonwealth Day by joining with other schools and members of the Community Council to raise the Commonwealth flag in the school grounds. The Affirmation was spoken by Filip Wator and the choir sang, making this a very special event. Sue Jones

The RE department visited Rome over the February half term. 35 students studying GCSE and AS Religious Studies took in all the main sights over four sunny days in the ‘Eternal City’. The students got to see the Spanish Steps and the beautiful Trevi Fountain early the first morning before the crowds got there! We went on to see the impressive Colosseum where the Gladiators fought for their lives and honour. The following day we visited the Vatican City where the students entered the largest church in the world (St Peter’s), and finally we finished with the infamous prison of Rome where many Popes from the past spent time hiding during the Fall of Rome. This spot had the best views of the whole of Rome and the students didn’t want to leave this fantastic city to go back to the grey skies of home!! SCHOOLS PIL PRIMARY - GREAT TO BE GREEN!

On Wednesday 8th March, there were smiles all around at Pil Primary School, when we were awarded with our First Green Flag from Eco School Wales. Matthew Bunt, the Eco Schools assessor, shared fantastic feedback after the assessment day. He noted, “All seven steps of the Eco-Schools process were firmly in place and evidenced well”. We are extremely proud of everyone’s hard work, particularly the Eco Council, who are committed to achieving agreed Eco targets and ensuring that the whole school community remains keen to keep green. We have also been busy celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight this half term. Year 3 pupils planned the ‘Fun time Fairtrade Break’ with activities such as a Fairtrade Logo Hunt, a Fairtrade Football Match and a Fairtrade Cake Sale. Staff from Tesco also visited the school to raise pupil’s awareness of the importance of buying Fairtrade products. Miss Parr-Jones Eco Schools Coordinator

AFON Y FELIN NEWS We have been awarded the Silver Sustrans Award! Roger Dutton came in to present it to Mrs Bowie (the cycling champion) and our Bike It Crew. To achieve this we took part in The Big Pedal and Bling It Competitions, all part of reducing our carbon footprint and using other modes of transport to school instead of the car. Congratulations to Ty Ysgol, who won the school cup following our Eisteddfod, and to Seren, who won The Chair. All the entries were extremely high this year, making judging very difficult. At the preliminary round of the Urdd Eisteddfod, Ellis and Eve were placed first, Ellis playing the piano, and Eve, reciting a poem. Thank you to all the pupils who represented our school, we are proud of you all! Also well done to Sofia, Natalia and Rhianna, whose entries won at the Cynffig Competition. PC Beaumont has had sessions with our juniors discussing the very important issues of internet safety and anti-social behaviour. We celebrated World Book Day, all the children and staff took part, and there were many colourful characters. The School Council organised a ‘Where’s Wally’ competition and a book swap. We have many exciting events planned, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter! AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor Seaside News | 20

Year 10 pupils experienced real university life at Cardiff University’s ‘Winter School’ and visited the Senedd to meet First Minister Carwyn Jones. Our Business Class partners CGI interviewed over 90 year 11 pupils in preparation for life after GCSE. Congratulations to the Year 5 & 6 competition winners who joined us at our Eisteddfod Concert to collect their prizes. On Cariad@yrurdd day pupils wore red, white and green to help promote the Eisteddfod coming to Bridgend and raised £423 for charity. The fun then continued when 66 pupils and eight members of staff travelled to Disneyland, Paris to take part in the St David’s Day celebrations. YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR NEWS

Recently, four Year 12 pupils took part in ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ a project, based on the premise that “hearing is not like seeing” designed to broaden the knowledge of the Holocaust, re-humanise the victims, and to understand its relevance today. A seminar with Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke, born in a concentration camp, prepared them for their harrowing visit. Chloe Green, Lois John, Isabel Humphries and Harry Evans have subsequently attended follow up sessions and plan to spread the lessons learned, initially through assemblies in school. At our Annual Eisteddfod at the Grand Pavilion on March 10th, pupils and staff enjoyed an extravaganza of young talent with both traditional and non-traditional events taking place all day; Seniors in the morning, and Juniors in the afternoon. The standard of entries for all competitions was exceptionally high and a massive thank you to pupils and parents for their support. Well done everyone! Andrew Slade Head Teacher

We celebrated St David’s Day with our whole school Eisteddfod. It was an afternoon of great fun. Well done to pupils of Dewi, this year’s winning house and congratulations to Elen Evans, our chaired Bard. World Book Day celebrations saw some weird and wonderful characters coming to school in some fantastic costumes. Well done to everyone on their efforts. The first rounds of Urdd Eisteddfod competitions have taken place, well done to everyone who participated on their excellent standards of performance. Shannon Davies-Evans, Cerys Coombes, Lowri Keirl & Elen Evans will represent the school at the County Eisteddfod and we wish them all the best. Best wishes also to our dance troupes and Cerdd Dant soloists for their Eisteddfod competitions. As part of the Cwlwm Celtaidd festival, the California Pipe Band visited school – it was a lovely musical treat. Some pupils were even brave enough to have a go at the bagpipes! Our special focus for Science week in March was Penguins and Junior pupils thoroughly enjoyed investigating all things penguin. We are now looking forward to a visit from Mad Science, a Junior ‘Big Sit’ challenge at the Principality Stadium and a visit from the RNLI. Ceri Thomas

POEMS A COLLIER BOY What was that noise that awful shriek That has aroused me from my sleep, It was the alarm within my clock With fingers in ears the noise to block, The noise I hate like no other A shout up the stairs a shout from my mother, Come on get up its getting late Breakfast was a piece of toast upon a plate, I dressed in my work clothes so full of dirt and grime Which has come from working down that coal mine, My boots are so heavy my socks full of holes My boots are so noisy with those hob nailed soles, A kiss from my Mam I felt a bit bolder A bag to carry my bread and jam upon my shoulder, A walk to the mine along a quiet dark street Arriving in time my workmates to meet, I picked up my lamp to lighten the dark Once down the mine my work time will start, We enter the cage on a dangling wire rope The air was so foul I thought I would choke, We landed at pit bottom with a bit of a bang But that didn’t stop the songs that we sang, The comradeship down the mine is like no other We treat each other like he’s your brother, We work so hard in that hot coal face When our shift ends to pit bottom we race, We enter the cage to the surface we go A breath of fresh air, not had a moment ago, I walk down the street with a quickening pace To have a hot bath and have a clean face, My man was waiting on the door To welcome me home, she knew the score, The water was boiling on a hot coal fire A hot warm bath was my one desire, My Mam cooked a meal now on the table I ate as much as I was able, I sit in the sun until the day turns dark Then off to bed for soon another day will start, I wake up to that awful shriek That has cut short my beautiful sleep. A BLUSTERY WINTER’S STORM

At the dying throws of violet winter, Hanging low over tall skeletal trees Sunk deep in depression, Before digging in more snowdrops for winter snows to come. Sally Richards, Porthcawl

The winds are really high, Since this early morn, The weather changing quickly, To a blustery winter’s storm. Trees blowing and bending, Branches breaking adrift, Some larger trees rocking, Until their roots just uplift. The skies quickly changing colours, With the vastly moving clouds, The winds whistling sounds, Are really hard and loud. Lightly drizzling one minute, Then to a heavy rain storm, Causing chaos to people, Because this isn’t the norm. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

HOMEWORK

TREASURE IN HEAVEN How precious were those spices she had gathered o’er the years But for long had lain forgotten since a Fragrance rare appeared No, not the myrrh and frankincense they had brought this Child from heaven But a perfume wafted on the breeze by the Christ, the Rose of Sharon But her long awaited Saviour has been slain by cruel men And all her hopes and longings now lie buried in a tomb Leaving the stench of cruelty, injustice and of fear So Mary brings her spices, for their time has now drawn near Yet see, those precious spices she was taking to his grave Now lie, scattered there and worthless. Christ is risen, strong to save! No need of myrrh or spikenard, for her Treasure’s now in heaven And she carries forth His fragrance, in the triumph of the Lamb. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

DAYDREAMING The gusts of March follow the first Snowdrops of purple winter, Shaking the grey skies, Bowing the trees, Hurling around houses, Through gardens and streets, Ripping, roaring, rending, Rebuking and scaring the day dreamer, Who gazes long at daffodils that dance and twirl in suffering

Like Byron, Keats and Shelley I pen an ode or two, But how to write a masterpiece I haven’t got a clue. Scribbling out a verse or two, rhyme and metre vary, I add a little humour, nothing too contrary. My saviour in this enterprise? My rhyming dictionary! A possible limerick masterpiece! (Maybe not) There was a young Mat name of Hardwicke Whose news zest was quite astronomic. To air all our views He launched Seaside News Immortalised now in this lim’rick. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

A LAME EXCUSE A hospital call on a Saturday I thought it quite odd, wouldn’t you She said “Mr Kyle We’ve got you on file For not one operation but two” “You can be on one list only” I heard her say with a frown She said “It’s a rule” Who’s she trying to fool She’s just keeping the waiting lists down. “One op tidies up from your cancer, The other gives you a new knee I know you feel sick But please take your pick” And she left the decision to me. It wasn’t an easy decision And depressing they had to skimp But I opted for guts And because of Hunt’s cuts I’ll stumble about with a limp So my name has gone from the knee list I’ll rejoin at the back of the queue But I’m not being fly They’ve forgotten my eye So it’s not one operation but two Jim Kyle, North Cornelly

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP EVENT

HARBOURSIDE NEWS

It was really fantastic to see that community spirit is still alive. I advertised that a community clean up event of ‘poo alley’ was taking place on March 4/5th and asked for support from the local community. Over this weekend 25 Rest Bay & Nottage residents turned out to give a hand. On Saturday, it was really hard work - digging, lopping, brushing, moving debris to the provided skips, picking up all the dog mess and dog mess bags that had been dropped but it didn’t deter the residents (volunteers) from turning up again on Sunday. The volunteers managed to finish ‘poo alley’ on Sunday and commence on the lane running from Sandpiper Road to Anglesey Way. I would like to thank each and every one that turned out to help. Their help is very much appreciated! All we need now is for those using these lanes to look after them by picking up after their dog and placing the poo bag into bins and not into the hedgerow. Also by making sure that any litter is placed into a litterbin. The clean up over this weekend took 25 residents eight hours to clear these lanes and we would ask that they are now looked after. The volunteers have now created the newly named, ‘Beach Walk’ - a fully wheelchair accessible pathway so please lets keep our environment clean for residents, visitors and also our wildlife. Cllr. Norah Clarke

We are delighted to confirm that Porthcawl Maritime Centre has been awarded £2.1M EU funding, as part of the Welsh Government’s wider Tourism Attractor Destination programme, which aims to create 11 must visit destinations across Wales. This exciting news means that we can now move towards beginning the construction phase of the project. Announcing the award, Julie James AM, Minister for Skills and Science said “the coast is the county’s Unique Selling Point and the reason why most visitors come to the area. But to attract more visitors to the area we need to provide more exemplary facilities and services for residents and visitors. Porthcawl Maritime Centre will fulfill this need by providing an exciting and innovative ‘year round’ family centred attraction right on the waterfront.” Welcoming the decision, Mike Clarke, Chairman of Porthcawl Harbourside CIC said: “It is impossible to fully describe how excited and proud the Porthcawl Harbourside CIC team are to receive the go-ahead for this project. This huge vote of confidence in our team and in the community of Porthcawl is tremendous.” See our website www.porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk or our Facebook/Twitter pages for more details. PORTHCAWL’S SECRET TRAGEDY In April I will be supporting a special exhibition staged by Porthcawl Shout Forum (PSF) at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, entitled ‘Porthcawl’s Secret Tragedy’. The exhibition will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the loss of the SS Samtampa, which was wrecked on Sker Point with the loss of all her 39 crew members, together with the Mumbles Lifeboat and her eight crew members, who also lost their lives. It will run from the 24th April to the 8th May. The exhibition will be made up of panels and pop up boards telling the story of the tragedy. There will also be artwork commemorating the disaster. As well as the exhibition, in early May, there will be a reception where I will be saying a few words. Porthcawl Shout is putting together a very full programme of events. Members of Porthcawl Shout and others within the community of Porthcawl feel very strongly that the Samtampa tragedy and the bravery displayed by the Mumbles lifeboat crew 70 years ago should not simply be consigned to the history books but commemorated. As Patron of the PSF, I would encourage people to visit the exhibition. Carwyn Jones AM Welsh Labour Leader

News NEW £1 COIN Quick – raid your piggy banks and cash in your £1 coins – they will soon have no value and will no longer be accepted as a legal tender. The £1 coin we are all familiar with will soon be replaced with an ‘edgier’ new 12- sided, bi-metallic design with several new security features, becoming ‘the most secure coin in the world’ with the purpose to stop sophisticated counterfeiters. Britain’s coinage has had several makeovers over past 30 years. Most significantly, in 1978 when the £1 Banknote was introduced. This was however withdrawn in 1988 and replaced with the first £1 coin in 1983, featuring the Royal Coat of Arms design. Successively, the coin has had several changes over the years. Whilst remaining round – it has changed in design transforming from the old heraldic designs to more modern approach, featuring famous bridges in the UK and the Royal shield of Arms. Sadly, the ‘round pound’ has now reached the end of its service, paving way for an edgier, more secure design. You have until 15th October 2017 to spend the current £1 coin or you can exchange them for the new version at your bank. CUTS TO GRANTS AVAILABLE VIA FAMILY FUND In March, I contributed to a debate in the National Assembly on cuts to grants available via the Family Fund. The Family Fund’s main function is to distribute public money in the form of grants to many lower income families with disabled children. Families can apply each year for grants towards household items, bedding or equipment, and everyday items that can ease the burden of caring for a severely disabled child. Previously, the Welsh Government maintained funding to the Family Fund of around £2.5 million a year, but in April 2016, this position changed, when the Welsh Government changed the way the Family Fund applies for funding. As a result, many families could see the funding available cut. I have received dozens and dozens of emails from concerned families in receipt of the Family Fund grant, urging me to help in persuading the Welsh Government to reverse this decision. I would urge anybody who might be affected by changes to the Family Fund, to continue to contact myself and other local representatives and help try to persuade the Welsh Government to reverse this decision.

CYCLISTS MUST NOT POSE DANGER TO PEDESTRIANS Interest in cycling took off following the UK successes at the London Olympics in 2012 and the sport is still riding high. But you don’t have to be Olympic class to enjoy a spin on your bike and the Assembly’s Active Travel Act encourages adults and children to think beyond leisure and to cycle to work or school too. But bad experiences suffered on our roads by many cyclists have resulted in some of them taking to our pavements in order to be safe themselves. Many seem to be unaware of the fact that cycling on the pavement is illegal unless it has been specifically designated as a shared space. As a result, we are hearing more and more about pedestrians being injured by adult cyclists using the pavements. I urge cyclists to treat pavements with respect – these are safe spaces for pedestrians. Bikes can also cause particular problems for people with impaired sight or mobility, wheelchair users and young children. If cyclists do not feel safe, then they should dismount and push their bikes along the pavement – but don’t ride. In avoiding the danger on the road, cyclists should not become the danger on the pavement. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

FEATURES NEWS FROM THE TALBOT

It seems that our Tuesday Coffee Mornings should be renamed ‘any excuse for a knees up!’ We recently celebrated a member’s significant birthday, she wouldn’t say which one, but she looks younger than 80, but won’t see 60 again! We celebrated by having lunch at the Grove Golf Club, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Now because we have several birthdays this month, our next jaunt is off to the coffee shop in Maesteg that everyone is talking about. Any excuse eh? In between the two events we have had a quiz - which the Golden Girls won. Also a baking event to make a Malteser Cheese Cake, a manicurist to tend to our nails, and another game of skittles. Our trip to the theatre to see Joseph and his Technicolour Coat is now fully booked, but we still have a few seats to see Miss Saigon in December, but don’t leave it too late. We are still looking for an early summer day trip, but with so many options, we are finding it difficult to choose; more details to follow. For more information contact Cheryl on 01656 749754. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Lovely to see the spring flowers coming out - despite the very un-spring-like weather. Gives us hope, and there is always hope in our Guild! At our February meeting Alison Westwood gave a demonstration of ‘Eclipse Gift Wrapping’ making it look easy and we all learnt something and admired her finished parcels. The craft group continues to make beautiful cards for every occasion, the sale of which goes to guild funds and charity. Our literature group was thinking about ‘All creatures great and small’. Our 63rd Birthday lunch at the Grove Golf Club was an enjoyable occasion with home grown entertainment to follow. This months meeting is on April 12th, 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when Simon Richardson MBE will tell us about his charity bike ride from Paris to Swansea. We are sponsoring Simon - he has a special place in our hearts being the son of our chairman and knowing what problems he has had to overcome and how grateful he is to the Air Ambulance. Do come and be inspired by his story. Dorothy Thomas 772157 Seaside News | 32

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES At Easter we can enjoy chocolates, holidays, spring with its warmer weather, the flowers in our gardens and the new born lambs in our fields, but for Christians there is something more. Easter is when Christian celebrate the victory of Jesus Christ over the powers of death, hell and sin. Originally it was the Jewish ‘Passover’ when the Hebrews escaped slavery in Egypt after sacrificing a lamb and smearing its blood over their doorposts to ward off the angel of death. From the beginning John the Baptist called Jesus Christ was ‘The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’. Christians believe that as the Son of God, and by dying on the cross as an innocent and sinless substitute and sacrifice for our sins, then rising again from the dead, Jesus rescues us from eternal death and provides the way to eternal life for all who will place their faith in him. The Apostle Paul says it like this ‘But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Enjoy Easter and consider the implications of Jesus life, death and rising again. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH One of the most evocative verses in the whole of the Bible is verse 5 of chapter 3 of the Old Testament Book of Exodus, which reads: God said to Moses, “Come no nearer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” My siblings and I rarely agree on very much. However, the one thing that we do find agreement with each other on is that one of the holiest patches of ground in the world is the small fairground at Coney Beach in Porthcawl. It was there that we laughed and shrieked and rode the merrygo-round summer after summer. It was there that we learned the sheer joy of being alive and being children. It was there that we played under the benevolent smile of our grandparents who financed all that fun year after year. For Moses, holy ground was made manifest in a burning bush. However, for me holy ground is anywhere that you know, absolutely and for sure, that you are loved. So may God’s love and blessing be upon you all at this Eastertide. TWO BRIGHT PLANETS

At its International evening the Rotary Club of Bridgend welcomed many guests including the President and members of the Interact Club of Pencoed Comprehensive School. From its fundraising endeavours the Interact Club presented a cheque for £250 to Rotary Club President Bob Broughton to purchase a Community Aquabox, a portable water purifying system used in poor communities worldwide. The entertainment for the evening was provided by Pencoed Comprehensive School Vocal Group, Department of Music and Dramatic Arts. The choir comprising mainly Year 9 pupils with soloist, year 13 student Charlotte Jones, was under the direction of Rhian Jenkins. The absolutely wonderful performance, included a mesmerising rendition of the musical Les Miserables with many animated solos. The whole performance was very much appreciated and was roundly applauded. Venus, which was such a spectacular object in the evening sky during the winter months has suddenly dived towards the horizon and will re-appear as a morning star during the summer months. The elusive planet Mercury can be seen shining brightly low in the western sky just after sunset and can easily be found with binoculars. Don’t point them anywhere near the Sun because you risk damaging your eyes. This is the best chance to see Mercury all year! During April, Jupiter will be visible throughout the hours of darkness and will be at its brightest. A good pair of binoculars will reveal Jupiter’s four largest moons, which can be seen as bright dots on either side of the planet. A small telescope will allow you to see the Great Red Spot - which is a gigantic storm, twice the size of Earth, which has raged in Jupiter’s lower atmosphere since 1830. At a temperature of 1300°C the enormous storm is much hotter than anywhere else on the planet. To give an idea of solar system sizes, Jupiter is 11 times the diameter of Earth and the Sun is 10 times the diameter of Jupiter. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

Legal SEPARATION UPON COHABITATION Many couples who live together separate without using a solicitor. Unlike divorce or dissolving a civil partnership, there’s no formal legal process to go through. But you may still want to take legal advice or refer yourself to a mediation service (using an impartial third party to help you reach agreement) if there is a dispute between you. These routes can be expensive however. Sorting out the finances might take some time and might not be straightforward, but it should be easier if you follow these steps: 1. Make a list of what you own and any debts you have. Include everything from your home to your savings, household items and your car. Usually, the person who owns an item is entitled to keep it. But your ex-partner may be able to make a claim. 2. If you don’t know what your possessions are worth, you may need to use experts. For example, you could check how much properties like yours are selling for in the local paper, talk to a local estate agent or look online at property websites. 3. Next, start to work out how you would like to divide your possessions, and who will pay bills and loans. 4. If you can’t agree how your home should be divided, you may need to seek legal advice. If you rent, your rights will usually depend on whose name is on the tenancy agreement. 5. Try to agree how you will support your children. As parents, you’re both expected to pay towards the costs of your children. It’s a good idea if you can draw up an agreement that explains how you’ve decided to divide everything. You’re both more likely to stick to an agreement if it’s written down, and it should reduce the chances of confusion later on. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

THE IMPACT OF THE WORKPLACE PENSION LAW: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW You may have seen the prime time television adverts being run by the Department for Work and Pensions containing the cartoon character ‘Workie’, but do you know what they are about? The answer is the workplace pension scheme, and if you have 30 or more employees then you may already be ‘in’. Under a law introduced in 2012, all employers must offer a workplace pension scheme and automatically enrol eligible workers – those who are between 22 and state pension age, earn more than £10,000 a year and who work in the UK. This requirement has applied to larger employers since October 2012. If you are not already ‘in’, there are a number of things you need to know. Firstly, if you haven’t done so already, you should find out when your automatic enrolment duties come into effect, known as the staging date. If you don’t pay through PAYE, your staging date will be 1st April 2017. It is worth noting that even if your employees are not eligible and you don’t have to enrol them by law, they can still join the scheme if they want to and you can’t refuse. When you enrol your employees you must notify them in writing, including the date you added them, the type of pension and who runs it, how much you will contribute and how much they will have to pay as well as how they can leave the scheme. This ‘opt-out’ comes with a number of caveats and responsibilities. You can’t encourage or force employees to opt out, nor can you imply a candidate is more likely to get a job if they do. You must let employees opt out if they ask and refund money they have paid if they opt out within one month. If they’ve opted out you must let them re-join the scheme at least once a year, and enrol them back in once every three years if they are still eligible for automatic enrolment. All this might sound complicated and burdensome, but it is better to deal with it sooner rather than later and risk facing heavy fines. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SKER WI NEWS The March meeting of Sker WI was held recently with 42 members present. There is a visit to the Royal Mint planned, which should be very interesting. Arrangements for the Link Meeting are well underway with members providing some of the entertainment. The speaker for the evening was Mr George Brady on Ruth Ellis - the untold story. Ruth Ellis was born Ruth Neilson in October 1926. Her family moved to London in 1941 and when Ruth left school she had various jobs before working in several Clubs and mixed with people from the film industry. Ruth appeared in the film ‘Lady Godiva Rides Again’. Whilst working in the clubs Ruth met and married George Ellis in 1950. It was while working in a club that Mike Hawthorn introduced her to David Blakely. It was on Easter Sunday 1955 that David Blakely was shot dead and Ruth charged with his murder. She was executed on July 13th 1955. A very interesting story. Our next meeting will be on 6th April at 7pm in St Davids Church Hall, Nottage. Ann Vipond

PORTHCAWL WI In January this year, we held our annual and highly successful auction. In February, we enjoyed an extremely enlightening and humorous talk on Felt Making by Pat Johnson – I thought Felt was the little squares you can buy in Hobbycraft – not so! In March, we enjoyed a demonstration on ‘Carrie Bags’. Our 2017 program contains many interesting items. Also there are many events organised by the GFWI to take part in. As a fairly young WI, I am very pleased that our membership is steadily increasing. We are a small friendly group and you are very welcome to join us. We meet every 4th Thursday of the month from 2 to 4pm at All Saints Church Hall. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on 713124. Sue Strachan

NEWTON WI In our March meeting we celebrated St David’s Day. We commenced with entertainment by a very talented young lady: Tessa Castanera-Webber, who had the most amazing voice. She sang songs from the ‘Musicals and Opera arias’. We were all thrilled with her singing. We then held the business side of our meeting, discussing coming events and various items. The evening ended with a ‘Faggots & Peas’ (or sausage & chips) supper, followed by Welsh Cakes, a most delightful evening. The ‘Pancake Morning’ was a great success, delicious pancakes cooked by Anna and Shirley (many thanks to both), with tea or coffee. To conclude the morning we held the usual ‘Toss

Send us your WI news - email info@seasidenews.co.uk the Pancake’ competition, we had joint winners: two lovely young visitors, Lewis and Liam, the wooden spoon going to Pat Theodore. So much to look forward to in the coming months, if you would like to join us, ring Jennifer on 784715 for more information. M Freeman

LALESTON WI The March meeting was opened by Vice President Barbara Rees who welcomed everyone and the Minutes of the last meeting were read and signed. The Federation newsletter was discussed and various items considered for the coming months regarding future trips. Tickets were sold for our forthcoming Link Meeting on the 20th April. Barbara then welcomed Debra John who entertained us with a very poignant monologue on War World 1, for which a vote of thanks was given by Jackie Hariss. The competition for a 1st World War Item was won by Connie Jones and the raffle by Christine Rees. The meeting ended with the singing of the Welsh National Anthem. Our next meeting will be held on the 6th April at 7.15 pm at the Blandy Hall, Laleston when our guest speaker will be Malcolm Cowpar on the History of WW2 and Bridgend People. The competition will be a Bridgend WW2 photograph. New members are always welcome and for further information please ring Diane Marshall on 01656 656600. Val Lock

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Tuesday the 14th of March found Mynydd Cynffig WI in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill at our new time of 2pm. We had a good turnout of members. Marjorie and Enid conducted the WI business, which was varied as there are many items to fetch to the notice of our members. Competitions, meetings, various days out, all to be discussed and talked about. We are looking forward to our guided walk of Cirencester, which we will have attended by the time you read this notice. But the archery and shooting day is yet to come and also the Annual Council Meeting in Port Talbot in May. The speakers to this meeting are always varied and entertaining. After WI business, we had tea and biscuits before listening to our speaker for March who was Mr Dean Powell - his topic was Land of Song. Mr Powell has spoken to us before on different topics and his knowledge of his subject is excellent. Next month we will be entertained by Mr Mike Wilcox, his topic - 35 years in fashion. Time to sort out our wardrobes ladies! If like mine, you’ll have several items which Mr Wilcox will be referring to. Christine Callaghan

NEW LENDERS AND SCHEMES KEEP MARKET PROGRESSING 2017 has so far seen no slowing in the vigorous activity in the mortgage market, seen throughout 2016. Indeed, a number of new lenders and new mortgage schemes have added to the choice, which gives borrowers a much wider range of options. One thing that hasn’t changed is the fact that lenders are still required to lend responsibly by using affordability calculations to ensure that mortgages are truly affordable, which makes absolute sense. However, as long as you are able to pass the affordability test, you should be fine. One very positive movement forward is the fact that some lenders are now recognising that people on zero hours contracts can still be worthy mortgage borrowers, provided you can demonstrate that your employment history has been longer term and regular and that you have proof of income for this. As for older borrowers, the number of lenders offering mortgages, even on interest-only, to older borrowers, continues to increase – and about time too! If you have a mortgage going into later life (typically over the age of 55) or you need to raise capital using your house as the security, please get in touch. Obviously, all lending is subject to affordability but very often, older persons have really good equity in their property and this can play a part in a lender’s decision to lend. If you are older and still on interest-only with your lender Seaside News | 40

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

Spring has sprung! Lovely. The downside is that the warmth and spring rains bring with them an explosion of slugs, munching away on new foliage, (not so lovely). One way to get rid of the slimy blighters is to scatter a few porridge oats about, they love them, the oats swell up in the slugs tummy and kill them, mean but effective! Best of all oats don’t harm anything else. Make time to deadhead your daffodils (leaving the foliage) otherwise daffy puts all its energy into making seed heads instead of putting it back into the bulb, in China the daffodil is seen as a symbol of wealth and good fortune, so you need lots! Many crops can be sown directly into the ground this month including parsnip, radishes and cabbage. Remember to stake any plants now that might need it later; it’s a bind wading into flower beds in full flow and could damage growth. Did you know the Prince of Wales owns most of the Scilly Isles. The Wildlife Trust pays the Prince one daffodil a year rental for the Isles – I wonder if I could get away with that for my allotment fees? Chris Early

At last days are getting longer and summer is not far away. Daffodils and crocus have provided spectacular displays seemingly ignoring the endless wind and rain. It is time to be deadheading tired daffodils, tulips. Removing wilted flowers also gives the plants a boost, allowing them to generate new buds. Come April, as well as the garden plants showing signs of growth so also does the unwanted weeds, so out comes the hoe and weed killer. Take care not to damage new shoots of the plants you want to keep. Use pet-friendly pellets or liquid to see off the slugs and snails. April 10th lecture, Kevin Thomas will talk about Shrubs & Herbaceous Perennials for all round colour in the garden. During March the Gardening Club lost two valued members Mr Aubrey Howard was one of the original group that set up the committee 46 years ago and he was the first Chairman. Very well respected for the knowledge he brought to the club in particular the growing of plants by hydroponic. Hugh Worgan will be sorely missed, not least for his practical skills but for his constant friendly and kind manner shown to everyone. Gwen Bradford

Health RIGHT INTENTION - THE PAUSE IN ACTION

To have an article in this section email: info@seasidenews.co.uk

ESSENTIAL FOR GOOD HEALTH

Practically everybody knows getting the right amount of vitamins is important. Occasionally, new information arises Last month - I described ‘Right View’ the next aspect of the minds action is that of right intention. With right view we touch that shows some vitamins to be of greater consequence than previously thought, often because they deal with crucial the whole knowledge of experience and a pathway opens up, functions throughout your body. That’s true with vitamin B12, then we pause, it may feel painful in that moment of stress, not only because it directly influences metabolism in every one but we pause and pause again. In that pause we make a shift and observe impermanence. Our Feelings, sounds, colours, words, of your cells throughout your brain and nervous system, as it regulates and synthesizes DNA and how your blood is formed, bodily contact are observed. Acknowledge such impermanence but because of new findings that suggest vitamin B12 may be and you fall into patient intention. What is right intention? far more important to microbial life than previously thought. Being resolved on renunciation, on freedom from ill will, The evidence, revealed by researchers at the U.S. Department of on harmlessness: This is called right intention. Now for the Energy’s Laboratory in Richland, Washington, shows that vitamin big support! It doesn’t matter how long it takes to arrive at B12, also called cobalamin, may in fact play a pivotal role in ‘intention’. Place your hand on your heart area and just move cell growth and coordination of cells in complex multicellular back to following your breath. Allow the breath to steady your systems. The study, published in Proceedings of the National mind, allowing thinking to fall away. Acknowledge the passing, Academy of Sciences (PNAS), reported two ‘unexpected slowing and easing. This isn’t forced or conceptual, being resolved on harmlessness is your response to your own mind and discoveries’ as a result of their research. One publication noted body. It isn’t about how you act towards others, but allowing this that while B12 is produced by a mere few organisms, it’s required process of self-compassion to arise in your mind and then acting. by nearly all of them and, as such, holds a lot of clout. Vitamin It will happen naturally, practice when momentum builds in your B12 is connected to the proteins in food and once it’s consumed the hydrochloric acid in your stomach separates out the B12, mind and experience the release. What do you notice? which then combines with a compound known as intrinsic factor Neville Evans so it can be absorbed by your intestines. New cell production and maintenance, as well as DNA synthesis, makes vitamin B12 vital for health. High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the most preventable causes of illness and premature death in Wales. Luckily, simple lifestyle changes, such as exercise, a balanced diet low in salt, maintaining a healthy weight, and in more serious cases, medication, can lower your risk. Tests will be administered by health professionals who are trained to identify potential problems and advise on appropriate action. So call in, take the test and … KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE! Rtn. Arts BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR

Five choristers were presented with life membership certificates by the Choir’s President, Paul Porter at Bridgend Male Choir’s Annual General Meeting. The five ‘lifers’ who achieved over 40 years service with the Choir were Alun Roberts Jones, Leon Evans, Peter Anderson, Mike Price and Mansel Abraham. Within every organisation there are background workers who carry out thankless tasks and one of those is John Keene, a long serving chorister of the Choir. John was presented with a Choir Plaque, in recognition of his hard work throughout the year in cajoling sponsors to support the choir, and in sourcing raffle prizes for the annual raffle. As Club Chairman, Gareth Davies, stated “If I was still working in sales I would have no hesitation in employing the best fund-raiser I know, John Keene”. Martin Cadogan mrcadogan@lineone.net

COR BRO OGWR WARMING UP FOR SPRING CONCERT We are in the swing rehearsing for our next concert! Conductor Rosie Howarth makes sure we are loose, relaxed and in the mood for singing before each rehearsal. And there’s nothing like some laughter to get a choir going. Our concert will feature John Rutter’s beautiful ‘Requiem’ with a small orchestra and our own accompanist, Glenn Crooks. Our soprano, Sarah Griffiths, is from The Royal Northern College of Music, a world renowned conservatoire. This is a short contemporary Requiem, completed in 1985, with bright orchestration and some lively light passages contrasting with moving, emotional pieces. Filling out the programme will be Mendelssohn’s, ‘Hear my Prayer’ which most of us know as ‘O For The Wings of a Dove’; ‘Love Divine’ by Howard Goodall, another modern composer (he wrote the scores for ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ and ‘Mr. Bean’) and the popular Welsh song ‘Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn’. Just to really exercise our lungs we will also be singing ‘Zadok the Priest’. Showcasing her talents, Sarah will perform some solo items. April 22nd, 7pm at All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl. Tickets are £10 at the door, from choristers or tel. 01656 653326. Dominique Spearey www.cor-bro-ogwr.com Seaside News | 46

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK It’s good to see Porthcawl drummer Terry Thomas on the mend after a long illness and he’ll be joining his former band Shy Warrior for their charity reunion at the Hi Tide on Friday 14th April – ticket details on their Facebook page. Don’t miss it. Also, fab to see keyboard wizard Adrian Hooper performing after his operation, I will catch you soon, Ade! Two Bridgend bands I tipped for big things haven’t let me down: Those Damn Crows have signed a major publishing deal, while prog rockers Last Flight to Pluto have a three-city tour in May with a prestigious London date booked. Thanks to Dappled Wilderness for their CD, ‘The Space Between The Words’. I must say it’s really spacey but catchy and wouldn’t be out of place on the Beatles’ White Album. Main man Richard Llewellyn has long been a hidden talent waiting to be discovered. Phil Jones, singer in rock band Sex, has dropped off a test pressing of his side project’s new album ‘Big Fat Blues Band’. I’ll give it a listen. Remember to send me your info a month in advance to meet the deadline, and keep the calls coming! Stag Marks Tel: 07549 728356 Photo: Last Flight to Pluto

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW The 23rd April 1947 probably started much like any other day for the townspeople of Porthcawl, but by the time it ended, a storm of almost unimaginable intensity had wrought havoc on its shore, and a great ship lay wrecked in three pieces on Sker Point, with the capsized Mumbles lifeboat lying on the rocks nearby. All 39 crew members of the ship, the SS Samtampa, had been drowned, as had all eight RNLI lifeboat men. In order to mark the 50th anniversary of the disaster in 1997, I spent two years in the mid 1990s producing the short dramatised documentary film Dangerous Coast, and this has now been re-released on DVD for the 70th Anniversary this month. Models of the Samtampa and lifeboat Edward Prince of Wales used in the making of the film are on display in Porthcawl Museum throughout April and May as part of a big exhibition, and DVD copies are available at the specially-reduced price of £4.95 each. I am pleased to say that several town organisations have also planned a series of commemorative events this year to ensure that the tragic events of that evening so many years ago are never forgotten. Porthcawl Male Choir were delighted and honoured to be asked to perform at Porthcawl Comprehensive Annual Eisteddfod in the Grand Pavilion. It was a wonderful occasion and one which the members of the choir thoroughly enjoyed. The choir began with a favourite Welsh hymn ‘Rachie’ (better known as I bob un sydd ffyddlon). This first hymn received rapturous applause from the students from years 10, 11 and 12. The choir followed this with two popular songs from Les Miserable, Bring Him Home and I Dreamed a Dream and then a more modern song from Adele’s 19 Album ‘Make me Feel Your Love’. The final song, suited to the occasion, was a choir favourite ‘O GYMRU’. This again received wonderful support from the students and staff. This was the first occasion that the choir had performed at a school event and both parties trust it will be the beginning of a long and lasting friendship. The choir have a very busy period with forthcoming concerts: Saturday 22nd April - Samtamper Memorial Service at All Saints Church; Saturday 13th May - joint concert with Whitland Male Choir at All Saints Church. Tickets can be purchased from Porthcawl Choir members or Tel: 07773 622537.

ART IN FOCUS This month at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, I bring to you an exclusive exhibition looking at Britain’s most famous exponent of Abstract Expressionism: Gillian Ayres. It features paintings from throughout the artist’s career and is the largest exhibition of Ayres work ever seen in the UK. Ayres sees the art of painting as an act and the canvas as an arena, hence the similarity in the ideas behind Abstract Expressionism, particularly Jackson Pollock and his ‘action paintings’. Her colourful explosive canvases explore her relationship with paint and its possibilities. Ayres has often lived in secluded places away from the hustle and bustle of modern day life where she can completely submerge herself in her painting. For Ayres ‘it’s a visual experience, not a literary one. It’s about what can be done with painting’. Being away from everything means Ayres is able to concentrate on playing with colour and how it responds to the canvas. Ayres is now 87 years old and despite some setbacks in her life, she continues to paint. Come and see for yourself the exciting possibilities of paint and what Ayres can do with it. Sport PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 8S

The weather was a little kinder to us this month, which meant we only had one game called off. With a little over a couple of month’s left of the season, the boys continue to play well and develop. Week by week they put all the hard work in training into game situations by executing some great skills. This month we played three fixtures: Nantyfyllon away in some wet and miserable conditions; Tondu at home in a blustery cold Rest Bay and Pencoed away in wet conditions. The results were: * Nantyfyllon - 8 tries v Porthcawl - 25 tries * Porthcawl - 20 tries v Tondu - 8 tries * Pencoed - 13 tries v Porthcawl - 27 tries The opposition have been excellent and proved to be great challenges, but our ethos of playing a team game and using passing and creating space has paid off brilliantly over the last few weeks. The boys understand that the ball moves quicker than the player and creating space is the key. As coaches we are very pleased with all the players and their continued dedication, hard work and commitment, all the attributes of good team players. Ian Davies and I have arranged a night with Nigel Owen and Kingsley Jones at the HiTide on 13th April, anybody is welcome (adults only) and tickets are £25 with a 2 Course Meal. All proceeds go back to our U8’s team who thoroughly deserve it. Please support this event. Check out the advert in this issue for more details. Geraint Evans

PORTHCAWL RUNNERS Spring has sprung, and along with dancing daffodils, personal bests have been springing up in the club. I can’t list them all but my coach’s runner of the month has been Andy Breeze, who has been gamboling like a lamb at the Porthcawl Parkrun, breaking his PB on a nearly weekly basis, and getting a 10k PB too. This success has been built on consistent attendance at the club’s Wednesday speed session. Well done Andy and to the others who use this as a spring-board to improvement. Congratulations to our runners that braved the Margam Park Half Marathon and Llanelli Half Marathon recently. The core sessions run on a Monday evening by Julianne Mort are very popular and she is pushing us hard, with many grown men shedding tears! A quick mention to a friend of the club - Terry Jones (of the Fruit Bowl) - he is running in a series of events culminating in an over 200 mile run from London to Porthcawl in August - for the RoadPeace charity, in memory of his sister. I plan to run the Manchester and Snowdon Marathons to support him. A fundraising night is planned for Terry’s challenge, or feel free to donate: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/William-Edwards9. Will Edwards

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARDS CLUB NEWS Many of you will see our iconic building as you come into Porthcawl - with its bright yellow colouring, you can hardly miss it! As we occupy a site on the headland overlooking both Coney and Sandy Bays, we often get the brunt of the storms that pepper the coastline, especially over the winter months, and this can mean that the building can get a fair old battering every year! So with springtime here, it’s a good time to see what maintenance and running repairs are needed. This year, we identified that a section of the floor in the gear room had started rotting badly, probably a result of years of wet rescue equipment and boating being brought in and out. If left untreated, this could have had an impact on our ability to get equipment out quickly in the event of a rescue. So, it is with massive thanks to Steve and Marnie Muir from CAM Engineering in Pyle, that we now have a spanking brand new aluminium floor provided at a very generous discount. This should stand the test of time for many years to come! Check out http://www.porthcawlifeguards.co.uk/ for further updates or information on how to join.
