might like to include a local story which has was recently in the national news. I’m the son of Charles Davies who died in August 2012. He led a very interesting life
especially during WW2 and was part of the Arctic Convoys which have had a lot of news coverage recently. My dad was actually part of the infamous PQ17 convoy which featured on BBC 2 with Jeremy Clarkson a couple of days ago. I have put together a tribute/memorial website that tells a little of his story and hit on the idea of attaching a QR Code to the headstone which is in North Cornelly cemetery. (Apparently this is the first time that this has been done in Bridgend, possibly South Wales.) Further information can be found on the memorial website www.shadowsflee. co.uk Thank you for the services to Bridgend County. Joe Davies, North Cornelly

Private and social housing tenants
St John’s Church summer fayre
Dear Editor, Byron Davies AM asks whether private and social housing tenants should be treated differently (Seaside News issue 168). Well – yes. And the reasons are simple. As the DWP’s own Equality Impact Assessment of the spare room tax showed, over two-thirds of the households affected by the bedroom tax include a tenant with a longterm illness or disability. People who need extra room for adaptations, equipment such as dialysis machines, separate rooms for disabled siblings or a carer all face a cut in housing benefit and risk rent arrears. The Government’s response is to say that disabled people can beg for discretionary housing payments but, apart from the indignity of having to plead a “special” case, fewer than one third of applications nationally have succeeded since the tax was introduced. Even if disabled people accept the need to downsize, where do they go? As the local authority registers of adapted homes in Wales clearly show,
Dear Editor, In spite of all the cold wet weather, the 2014 Summer Fayre on Newton Green is already being planned. So on behalf of the Executive Committee, I write to tell everyone via Seaside News that there will be an Open Evening on 18th February at Newton School Room (opposite St John’s Church) to get the project underway. The meeting will start at 7pm and everyone is welcome to attend – particularly if you feel you would like to get involved. We are looking for as many ideas and suggestions as possible – creativity always encouraged – as well as willing volunteers to help the day go smoothly. The date for the Fayre has been set to Saturday 5th July and if you attended in 2013 you will know how busy the Summer Fayre can be. As it
there is a huge shortage of accessible properties of any size that have been or can be adapted to meet disabled peoples’ needs. Finally, like every other social housing tenant, disabled people are usually allocated the property they occupy. They did not choose their homes because of some whimsical desire, as Mr Davies suggests. After a rigorous assessment procedure, a council housing officer decided which home met their needs. Now they are being vilified and penalised for decisions that were not in their control. Is that fair, Mr Davies? Of course, this is not about “fair play”. This is part of a campaign by the Government to claw back hard-foughtfor benefits from the most vulnerable people in society. Perhaps Mr Davies might acknowledge that he represents a significant number of disabled people as part of his constituency. He might like to listen to their voices before airing his ill-informed prejudices. Tom Paine, Porthcawl
Patient demands for full investigation of patient safety concerns Dear Editor, The patient safety charity, Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA), has demanded a more robust investigation of patient safety concerns across Wales as well as Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, and Neath Port Talbot Hospital. In a letter to Mark Drakeford, the Health Minister, AvMA calls families who have experienced poor care at the South Wales hospitals to be given a voice in the review which was announced at the end of last year. They also call on a wider review of patient safety across Wales, following their damning report on implementation of patient safety alerts in September of last year, and recent scandals at Betsi Cadwaladr, Cardiff and Abertawe Health Boards. Following contact from Seaside News | 10
famlies affected there, the charity has organised a public meeting about Princess of Wales and Neath Port Talbot hospitals which is being held in Bridgend on 30th January. Anyone with experience of poor care at the hospitals and wanting to know more about the independent review is welcome to attend and should contact AvMA: karen@avma. org.uk or 020 8688 9555. AvMA chief executive, Peter Walsh, said: “It is vital that the voice of families affected at Princess of Wales and Neath Port Talbot hospitals is properly heard in this inquiry. Moreover there is an urgent need to look at patient safety across the board in Wales. The “Putting Things right” scheme is not doing what it says on the tin”. Gareth Williams, Porthcawl
becomes more popular more hands are needed on deck to organise everything – Pimms and programmes, tents and tables, bunting and banners, strawberries and sponsors, cakes and karaoke – well you get the idea! If you would like to be part of what has become a lovely popular event in Porthcawl’s calendar, please come along and join in, add to the discussion or just support by being there and spreading the news. See you on the 18th Feb at 7pm – Newton School Room – opposite St John’s Church. We want to make the 2014 Summer Fayre another great success – and we need you to make this possible! Sue Smart – Executive Committee – St John’s Church Summer Fayre sue@susansmart.co.uk
Bedroom Tax - tenants can appeal and win Dear Editor, Throughout Wales, tenants are organising and fighting back against Westminster’s bedroom tax. The policy is defined not only by its cruelty, but also its incompetence. It appears to be a shoddy, ‘backof-a-fag-packet’ measure that is unravelling in the courts and the media. This throws up all sorts of opportunities for those affected. Consequently; if you have lived in the same property since 1st January, 1996 or before AND have been in continuous receipt of housing benefit (full or just one pence per week), in meeting these two conditions you are almost certainly exempt from the bedroom tax. The same will apply if you inherited a tenancy on the same basis. Bridgend Against the Bedroom Tax urges all tenants within this category to appeal. The process is simple, free and, if successful, not only will you
no longer have to pay the bedroom tax but you will be refunded the difference since April or its equivalent in arrears. Additionally, we urge councils and social landlords to help raise awareness of this loophole which could deliver relief for thousands across South Wales. If you are not covered by this regulation, you might also be able to appeal on the grounds of room size, room use, disability/illness or family relationships. Either way, we can help – please contact Kay on 07530628386 or email Bridgendagainstthe bedroomtax@gmail.com. The bedroom tax has become emblematic of all that is unfair and shambolic in Coalition Welfare policy - let’s make 2014 the year we beat it to the ground! Kay Harris & Tim Thomas – Bridgend Against The bedroom Tax

End of an era for SJC Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Porthcawl and the surrounding areas for their tremendous support during the past 25 years. The lease on the property in Lias Road, which, originally, my sister and brother-in-law took out all those years ago, comes to an end this month. Sadly, I have decided not to renew the lease for several reasons. Porthcawl, like many other towns, has changed dramatically during this time. The development of large, out of town stores, such as Tesco etc has led to the demise of town centres. Also, technology has changed so much. The majority of people no longer print their photographs. Instead, they choose to store the digital images on computers. If they are shared with family and friends it is usually via social networking sites such as Facebook. Even though SJC offers many other services, the photographic side was the largest proportion of the business. Hence, it would not make good business sense to
renew the lease for a further term. At the end of this month, it will be a sad day when the door closes for the last time. As many of you will know, my brother-in-law Neil passed away in June of last year. On behalf of him, myself, my wife Jolene and my sister Sandra, we would like to thank all of our loyal customers for their support and friendship over the decades. We enjoyed being part of the community and made some great friends along the way. I would also like to thank Mat, Seaside News for a great publication. Over the years, the advertisements that we placed with you generated a good source of income. The magazine not only has a very good distribution rate, it really is read by the households that it is delivered to. I hope that the Seaside News keeps dropping through our doors for many years to come! With our heartfelt thanks, we wish a happy and healthy New Year to all of our customers. SCHOOLS Say no to nursery cuts in BCBC In December 2013 the Pisa results were released, portraying Wales as a country with the lowest educational standards in the UK and below much of Europe. Yet, in January 2014 BCBC are releasing their consultation document on nursery education, recommending ending fulltime nursery entry at aged three; lowering standards, risking jobs and exerting ďŹ nancial pressures on parents. Susan O’Halloran, Headteacher at Nottage Primary School, states headteachers are united in their belief that this would be catastrophic. “There is overwhelming evidence that children’s life chances are heavily predicated on their development in the ďŹ rst ďŹ ve years of life. Children who develop well in these early
years are ďŹ ve times more likely to achieve the highest levels later on.â€? Furthermore, the Foundation Phase assessment of attainment in 2012, made it clear that Bridgend’s enhanced provision has impacted very positively on standards for pupils aged seven years. Language, literacy and communication, mathematical and personal and social development attainment was higher than the Welsh average despite higher than average levels of socio-economic deprivation. We need your help to campaign strongly against this. Join our Facebook group ‘Say No to Nursery Cuts in BCBC’. and make sure BCBC cut costs NOT STANDARDS! Ree Mahoney
Porthcawl Primary news This year we started back with a bang. On our ďŹ rst day back we were lucky enough to have a visit from a former pupil. The pupil was Lloyd Pearce who is currently playing for the Ospreys. He also brought with him current Welsh International prop Ryan Bevington. Our pupils had a
wide range of questions and it was really interesting to ďŹ nd out about all the hard work and dedication it takes to be a professional rugby player. We would also like to congratulate ‘Beatfreakz’ who
body popped all the way to the ‘Show Biz’ dance ďŹ nal in Blackpool. The competition took place in the Winter Gardens and over 70 acts took to the stage! We are very proud of all our pupils who took part and are very impressed with their dance moves! We have also had road safety training this month. It may be cold outside but that hasn’t stopped our pupils jumping on their bikes and learning how to cycle safely on the roads. We are working our way towards become a ‘Bike it’ school so we have many exciting events coming up over the next few months. Andrew Wood Porthcawl Primary School

Brynteg pupils get a taste of the Stock Market Each year Brynteg School Year 9 pupils take part in the annual ‘Stock Market’ Challenge which is an important part of the Brynteg Calendar. This year it was organised by Brynteg WRE (Work Related Education) Co-ordinator and languages teacher Miss Gillian Smith. It proved to be a valuable and exciting experience for the pupils, giving them the opportunity to buy and sell virtual stocks and shares in a controlled environment and
supervised by Economics & Business Studies teachers Mr Gareth Austin and Mr Dean Lewis. The pupils were split into groups and allocated an
amount of money in order to test their skills and increase their capital. Each group
appointed three pupils to assume the role of Finance Manager, Floor Trader and Media Analyst. The event was highly competitive and highlighted the budding Brynteg entrepreneurs of the future. Head of Economics & Business Studies Mr Austin said,â€? This event proved to be really effective and gave pupils real insight into how the Stocks & Shares Market functions, well done to all the pupils who took part with such enthusiasm!â€? A taste of Techniquest The school has taken the opportunity to join Techniquest’s membership scheme and this term we have a strong science theme to our topics. Most classes have visited Techniquest to discover many interesting facts and learn from ďŹ rst hand experiences. Year 5 have performed ‘A Play in a Day’, with the help of an actor they succeeded to learn a script and actions relating to their theme of the Victorians. At the end of the day they performed the play in front of the juniors and their parents. Well done Year 5! To celebrate St. David’s Day
next month the Foundation Phase will be visiting the Gower Heritage Centre to study aspects of Welsh Culture, while Key Stage 2 will discover what life was like as a miner at the Big Pit. Our recent Estyn inspection report was very positive and we were proud to read that “One of the school’s strengths is the exceptional working relationship between teachers and pupils. The school has a strong ethos based on fairness and this creates a caring and disciplined environment.” “The school works highly effectively with a range of partners and this work has a significant impact on pupils’ wellbeing and achievement. Collaboration with other providers ensures that sixth form students can choose from a comprehensive range of academic and vocational courses.” “In the sixth form, students perform above the family and Wales averages for both the level 3 threshold and wider capped points score. ... Both boys and girls achieve well at the level 3 threshold and in 2012 there was virtually no gap between their relative performance.” Seaside News | 13
Brynteg School news As mentioned in the January issue last term was an extremely busy one at Brynteg School, so we have included more relevant news as our pupils have excelled in so many areas. As previously reported two of our debating teams have been successful in reaching the next round of national competitions but we unfortunately omitted to name one member of the Brynteg team competing in the Wales Debating Championships, she is Rebekah Lee of Year 12 – sorry Rebekah! Twenty-six A Level Art students were involved in a Community Arts Festival ‘Made in Roath’ in Cardiff. The event was open to the public and held in the home of Head of Art Mrs S. Pearson.
Branching out with Forest School award Cellan Hall of Year 11 was delighted to receive a cheque of ÂŁ1,350 from a team of local young men and women who ran the Cardiff Half-Marathon in order to raise money towards funding a new sports wheelchair for Cellan. The wheelchair will allow Cellan to compete at the highest level and he hopes to fulďŹ l his dream of representing Britain at table tennis in the Paralympic games in 2016. Two Year 7 pupils, Olivia Lester and Mia Dobbs, were crowned Britain’s Best AllGirls Champions in Latin and ballroom dancing recently. This follows on from their win in the Juvenile All-Girls category at the ‘Stars of the Future’ competition where they became Welsh latin

As well as the usual mix of fun, games, and activities offered at the club, children will be able to try their hand at bushcraft skills, learning about trees and the woodland environment, using outdoor tools, such as saws and knives, and even outdoor cooking. An ‘All things Wales’ week

The students exhibited their art work alongside arts works of the Brynteg art teachers. Also the staff and students ran print-making workshops which proved to be very popular. This was a great success and it is hoped that this will become an annual calendar ďŹ xture for the Brynteg Art Department pupils. On the sporting front Bradley Chatman of Year 10 followed up his Welsh Champion Tae Kwon Do medal with a British Gold medal as part of the Welsh Tag Team. Well done Bradley.

Other visitors will include Pauline Lewis, Father Craig (All Saints Church) and Steve Lock (Gilgal Chapel), all of whom will be looking at personal values and good citizenship. During February, Year 6 will complete a week’s intense ‘cycle training’ course including both practical and written activities. Porthcawl Comprehensive School Winter blues banished The gloom of our wet and dark winter was banished with our excellent performances of ‘Guys and Dolls’. Porthcawl Comprehensive School has a national reputation for musical theatre and this was our 35th consecutive production. As is our tradition, packed houses at the Pavilion were thrilled by the professional spectacle they enjoyed. May I thank all the cast, staff and parents who give so much to ensure the marvellous success of our show, musical theatre is alive and well in Porthcawl. As the year rolls on, I need to mention the Year 11/12 Induction Evening. This evening will be held at school on Wednesday 12th March, to commence at 6pm. The purpose of the evening is to raise awareness of what we offer in our Sixth Form, both courses and resources.

St Clare’s news January is always a busy time in school, and this year has been no exception. Pupils in the Senior School have been working hard towards their external GCSE and A-Level examinations. We wish all our pupils the best with their results, and would like to congratulate them on the effort they have already put in this year. There has also been plenty of activity outside of the classroom, as pupils in both the Senior and the Prep School have competed in a number of sporting fixtures against local schools. Our football, rugby and netball teams have been training during lunch times and after school and have already had some great results this term. The Prep School rugby team recently had the unique opportunity of taking part in a national rugby tournament in Northampton which was
organised by Cognita Schools. Well done to everyone who took part! Our Sixth Formers have recently returned from a fantastic trip to Paris, where they visited the Paris Business School and attended lectures on marketing in Disneyland, Paris. This is an annual trip which is organised by the Business Studies department, and is always thoroughly enjoyed by pupils. Cynffig Comprehensive news 2014 has already got off to a fast-paced start. On 14th January, we held an enormously successful and enjoyable Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths activity day for all our Year 8 pupils. Their challenge for the day was to design and build compressed-air rockets, and to launch these across our Sports Hall complete with passenger (Barbie!) to discover what factors affected its performance. It was education (and Cynffig) at its best: pupils learning through investigation, creativity and fun. Many staff were involved, but particular thanks must go to Mr Howe, Head of Year, Mr Daniel, Head of Technology, and Mr Ridd,
Head of Science, who put together an event from which our pupils gained real insight and understanding. A date for some of your diaries is our Year 11 Options Evening on Wednesday, 5th March. This will take place from 5pm – 7pm, based in the School Hall, and with opportunities for prospective Year 12 pupils, their parents and carers to visit departments, talk to subject specialists and consider possible choices. Our performance at A-level is going from strength to strength – absolutely anyone considering 6th Form really should come along and see what’s on offer. We’d love to see you. Nick Huxley
Newton Primary news A happy new year to everyone! We have had a busy time already at Newton. Our Nursery and Reception children had a fabulous visit to Cardiff Castle this week and learned lots for our new topic of ‘Dragon Tales’. Years 1 and 2 visited All Saints Church to look at their beautiful stained glass windows as a stimulus for their theme of ‘Electric
Rainbows’. Years 3 and 4 visited Afan Argoed Miner’s Museum as part of their Victorian topic. They had a very informative and enjoyable day. Year 5 and 6 took a step back into time when they investigated and explored artefacts from WW2 with the guidance of an army officer. It’s set to be another exciting term at Newton. Nic Nash

West Park Primary news At West Park we are enjoying a successful start to the new year after a glowing Inspection report! Cllr Huw David said: “West Park should be really proud of this fantastic and welldeserved inspection report, which demonstrates the excellent standards being achieved at the school. “I am particularly pleased that inspectors have highlighted the positive behaviour of pupils, the good progress they are making in their learning, and the strong voice they have developed through both the school council and ‘eco warriors’ schemes. The report acknowledges the contribution our teachers and support staff make to helping
pupils develop their skills and progress in their learning, as well as providing a high level of care, support and guidance. Mr Bird said: “West Park is very pleased and proud of the outcomes of its recent Estyn report. The report reects the excellent effort and support that staff, pupils, parents and governors give to the school. “We will continue to build on these good results and the recommendations in order to take the school forward in the future.â€? One area of improvement that inspectors identiďŹ ed was school attendance, however the report noted that recently introduced systems are already having a positive impact. Mr I Bird, Head Teacher

Another twist in the tale of Porthcawl regeneration Now we hear that Morrisons has followed Tesco and withdrawn from the plan to build a supermarket on land at Salt Lake. For how much longer can this saga drag on? The current round of regeneration ideas is a decade old and there were previous plans stretching back 30 years or more. In the meantime, Sandy Bay lies like a wasteland and Salt Lake is bleak and fallow. It has definitely been a case of jam tomorrow for Porthcawl which is now on a diet of bread and dripping. If two leading supermarket chains cannot make the new store scheme add up, then who
can? And who will build houses at Sandy Bay if they have to pay £10m up front for flood defences plus the £15m asking price for the land. The regeneration model being used by the council of a standard supermarket plus new houses is a little last century. The whole financial basis of the regeneration needs detailed re-assessment before a decision is taken about what to do. The status of the infamous agreement between the various landowners also needs attention. It may be time to change the plans. Suzy Davies AM

Paper is still important I recently met with Keep Me Posted campaign, a group dedicated to stamping out the prices people are paying to keep their paper bills, as more and more companies try to deal with their customers online. The campaign is not antidigital, they just want people to have the choice. Go online for your bills and statements if that suits you; if you prefer paper, you shouldn’t be penalised for that choice. I’ve jointly put forward a Statement of Opinion in the Assembly supporting Keep Me Posted’s aims. But more than that, they told me that having paper bills can help people
keep on top of their bills, and find errors more easily. People who receive paper bills via the post are more likely to pick up mistakes, with 41% saying they have spotted something amiss on their energy bills compared to 29% of those who check online. Their survey also showed that 28% of UK adults have been overcharged by their energy provider, with the average mistake leaving them out of pocket by £121 – that’s quite an overcharge, especially for those who are struggling to afford heating already. I know too that not everybody can get online.

Dementia: moving out of the shadows Not long ago dementia was barely mentioned, shrouded in stigma and a lack of understanding, with those suffering from it, and their carers, left without any support. Today, around 44,000 people in Wales are estimated to be living with dementia, a number set to rise by 34% by 2020. Age Cymru suspects the true figure to be much higher, as many potential suffers are hesitant to seek a diagnosis or don’t recognise the symptoms. However change is on the horizon. The disease is still incurable and by 2050 it will affect over 135m people around the world, treble today’s number. In light of the challenge it poses dementia has now
become a priority issue, indeed it has never held such a high profile as last month’s special G8 meeting in London on the subject proved. At this meeting health ministers from the group, which consists of eight of the world’s richest countries, committed to developing a cure or treatment for dementia by 2025. The UK has already agreed to double funding to £132m by 2025. Such high profile international attention should also help to encourage more people to seek a diagnosis and banish stigma. Overcoming the many challenges dementia presents will be difficult but summits such as this show we are at last heading the right way.

Fantastic start to 2014 for Porthcawl schools It’s great to see Porthcawl Comprehensive and West Park Primary enjoy a fantastic start to 2014. Both schools received glowing Estyn reports with inspectors rating their current performance and future prospects as ‘good’. It’s important for all schools to constantly seek to develop and improve, of course, so pupil attendance will be one of the areas that we will be looking at across the county borough this year. Many children already have strong attendance records, but some people may think that missing the odd day isn’t such a big deal. However, it all adds up. By the time they sit their GCSEs, a pupil whose overall attendance
rate is 80 per cent will have missed a whole year’s worth of school. Missing lessons really affects a pupil’s grades as on average, children with 90 per cent attendance achieve eight GCSEs at grades A*-C. For youngsters with 80 per cent attendance, this drops down to five. When pupils miss school, it can also be bad news for parents and carers as they risk being prosecuted, fined or even sent to prison. That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to do the math in 2014, and work out that success starts by being in school.

Reason for Morrisons withdrawl The announcement shortly before Christmas that Morrisons was withdrawing plans for a store in Porthcawl came as a big surprise to everyone concerned and was a huge disappointment all round. We had received no previous indications from Morrisons of any problems and had carried out a considerable amount of work aimed at delivering a new foodstore for Porthcawl, unlocking further funding and attracting additional business into the area. The council recently found out that the reason why the investment board of Morrisons decided to pull their plan was purely because the company had made a decision to reduce its national capital budget for 2014-15.
Our approach to the Porthcawl regeneration has been realistic and pragmatic. A foodstore has never been the single ultimate aim of the scheme, but it still has an important role to play in delivering further benefits for the town. We are now considering all options for how we can provide this part of the regeneration and will be issuing further updates as the situation develops, so keep an eye on Seaside News and the local media. Work on other aspects of the town’s regeneration is continuing, and we are currently organising the official opening for Porthcawl Marina – more news on this soon.

Storm damage to Porthcawl The recent torrential rain, high tides and gale-force winds had quite an impact on Bridgend County Borough, but especially along our coastline. Photographs of huge waves breaking across the seafront saw Porthcawl featured in several London tabloids and across international media as the town took a battering from the elements. The Rest Bay boardwalk particularly suffered with whole sections torn in half or battered beneath banks of stones, and at the time of writing it remains closed until further notice. Throughout the storms, workers from the council and other agencies were out in the thick of it, fighting to prevent
flooding and keep damage to a minimum. Our Highways team distributed sandbags to householders and premises in areas such as West Drive and Beach Road, cleared fallen trees and other debris from roads and footpaths and kept drains and gulleys clear. At the same time, emergency flood defence work was carried out at Newton Beach which thankfully kept the tide at bay. We can’t prevent severe weather, but we do our best to plan ahead and limit its effect, so thank you to everyone who played a part in this, including the many volunteers who helped us to clean up afterwards.

Neighbourhood policing at Nottage and Rest Bay At the latest PACT meeting you told us about vehicles exceeding the 30 m.p.h. speed limit. We took action – the local neighbourhood team carried out speed checks in the area on four occasions. In total 315 vehicles speed was captured using the hand held camera with sixteen vehicles exceeding the speed limit. More checks have been planned for February. The traffic management team have been spoken to with regards to speed counters being placed in the area and will also be looking at having the GoSafe mobile speed van to monitor the area to assist the neighbourhood team. Parking – Locks Lane residents are concerned by the inconsiderate parking of
vehicles when junior football is played on Saturday mornings. We took action – The neighbourhood team have been in discussions with the chairman and secretary of the club and have arranged a meeting in the new year to discuss the issues further. In the short term ‘No Waiting’ Police cones have been placed in hot spot areas to help relieve the parking issues surrounding Locks Lane and Stratford Drive. Next PACT meeting is on 25th March 2014 at the Scout Hall, West Park Drive, Porthcawl at 8pm. PCSO 54295 Leighton Rees Mobile number: 07805301492 Email: Leighton.rees@southwales.pnn.police.uk
Neighbourhood policing – Porthcawl West Central At the latest PACT meeting concern was raised over parked vehicles blocking access to residents’ driveways on Park Avenue. Your new local officer PCSO Richard Hopkins has been conducting both foot and bicycle patrols of the area to identify any offending vehicles. Should any vehicle be observed blocking a driveway PCSO Hopkins will carry out a check to determine the vehicle owner. He will then speak to the resident to determine whether the vehicle causing an obstruction belongs to that property. Graffiti – West Drive Shelter The shelter has recently been painted but was previously www.seasidenews.co.uk
covered with graffiti causing an eyesore to user and visitors to the shelter., Regular patrols will be conducted by officers at various times of day to prevent any further graffiti problems. Other Information Operation “Holly” was to prevent shop-lifting in Porthcawl town centre before Christmas. Patient safety - public meeting A public meeting organised by the patient safety charity Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) has taken place in the wake of a series of serious claims about patient care at the Princess of Wales Hospital. The Welsh health minister announced in the autumn that services at both the Princess of Wales Hospital and Neath Port Talbot Hospital would be the subject of a “deep dive” review. Now AvMA is demanding a more robust investigation, calling for families who have experienced poor care to take part in the review. It also follows recent reports that consultant posts at the Princess of Wales were
understaffed by 28%. I remain clear on this: there can be no ambiguity in what this review will and will not consider. If there are further claims from other families, then they must be investigated too. Anything less will not restore confidence in a hospital where key services remain under threat as part of the South Wales Programme, and could further undermine and demoralise the many hardworking and conscientious staff who are employed there. The minister must lead on this, in order to allay the sense of frustration experienced by Mrs Williams’ family, and head off any claims that the review is a stitch-up.

FEATURES Bird watch: Blue Tit The Blue Tit is one of our most familiar garden birds and during the course of a winter as many as 1,000 individuals may visit your bird table! Look out for a small bird sporting a blue cap and white cheeks with black stripes through the eyes. The body is yellow and wings
dark blue. If you see a Blue Tit flying a few metres between perches, with fast wing-beats, or an occasional glide, it is likely to be the display flight of a male attempting to gain the attractions of a nearby female. 85% of the bird’s day is spent searching for food. The average number of eggs laid by a Blue Tit nesting in
a garden is 8.8 compared to 10.9 for one nesting in mature oak woodland. 93% of Garden BirdWatchers in Wales record this species. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW)

the “Friends of Kenfig” to draw attention to the distressing state of affairs towards Sker Point. from Phil and other s showing serious collapse of the dune shore-line. Questions need to be asked. Is the erosion really due to natural causes, as some socalled “experts” claim, or is it man-made? Is Kenfig National Nature Reserve in effect donating its sand to the building industry via the offshore sandbank dredgers licensed by the Welsh Government? What can be done to stop this destruction? The Friends of Morfa and Kenfig are determined to ensure that the relevant authorities snap out of their complacency and begin to address the issue of coastal erosion along Margam and Kenfig Sands. the foundation of Kenfig Hill as we know it today. After receiving many requests from local people who would like to associate themselves or members of their families with Heathbridge Miners’ Square, Pyle Community Council has arranged for families or individuals to commemorate the time they or a member of their family worked in one of the local collieries. Individual plaques with a name and details of the colliery and approximate dates can be purchased at cost of £30; the plaques will be mounted
on the circular retaining wall at the memorial square. It is hoped all the applications will be accepted but they may have to be limited because of the actual wall space available, if oversubscribed applications will be subject to a first come first served process. Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group At the last meeting of the Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group our local specialist nurse Louise Ebenezer told us about her trip to Tanzania to help set up the first ever course for Parkinson’s nurses in East Africa. One of the things that they did when they arrived in Tanzania was to travel around the rural areas visiting people with the illness. Most villages do not have running water, and many sufferers will not have seen a doctor, let alone visit a hospital. They have to pay for their own medication, often helped by their own extended families. With further courses being
planned, better care can be brought to the Parkinson’s suffers in Africa. This made us realise how lucky we are here in South Wales with the help
we receive. The group celebrated Christmas with lunch at the Grove Golf Club. For further information contact 01656 783071

Porthcawl U3A news
The people of Kenfig Land deeds issued in the 14th century provide an insight into the lives of the people who lived in Kenfig. From the deeds we discover that the town was made up of bakers, blacksmiths, brewers, butchers, chandlers, cordwainers, millers, pelterers, tailors, tanners and wheelwrights, amongst other professions. In 1327 the deeds show that John le Yonge of Kenfig mortgaged two acres of arable land to Thomas le Tyler while earlier in the 14th century Amabilia, daughter of Walter the miller, granted an acre of land in Kenfig to John Peruat and his wife Alice near the meadow of John Faber, the blacksmith, at a rent
of 1d yearly with 20s paid beforehand. By 1321 Alice Peruat had become a widow and she quit-claimed her land; she released all claims to her land near Monks’ Street to Margam Abbey in return for one loaf of bread and a gallon of beer, daily, for life. The consumption of a gallon of beer on a daily basis might sound excessive; however, in medieval times water was considered not fit enough to drink and so people would consume various strengths of beer and ale or, if they were wealthy, wine. Mansel Jones, author of Pendragon http://jonesthebook.com/
If you don’t know from the inside what makes the story of the Porthcawl U3A special then you can be forgiven for thinking the organisation is designed for academics. The very description ‘University of the Third Age’ conjures up pictures for many people of an organisation looking to extend an academic service similar in nature to an extension of school or college and aimed at providing yet another opportunity to study for further qualifications. Nothing could be further from the truth. Certainly members are encouraged to continue to use their knowledge, skills, and experience but there the likeness ends. What you
will find is primarily a caring organisation that is made up of likeminded people who still want to live a vibrant, active and enjoyable life but to be conducted at their own pace and in their own time. Each month a monthly menu is produced of events taking place every day of the week for members to choose from. Friendship is what drives this organisation and no-one need feel lonely anymore as they will soon find friends whose circumstances will be similar to their own. Such is the nature of this wonderful organisation. Please ring 783663 to find out more. Clive Mort

Seeing Northern Lights
Do you have what it takes to foster a guide dog puppy? Guide Dogs Cymru is appealing for puppy walkers in the Porthcawl area. Volunteers are needed for the full-time care and education of guide dog pups from six weeks to 12 months, when they return to the charity for specialised guide dog training. The young dogs spend much of their first year living with the puppy walker, learning basic obedience and getting used to a home environment, noise and the bustle of towns. It is rewarding to raise a dog that
Northern Lights, otherwise known as Aurorae Borealis, are caused by violent activity on the surface of the Sun when gigantic chunks of hot plasma break off and are flung towards Earth. Charged particles mingle with our planet’s powerful magnetic field and are whisked up to the polar regions where they collide with molecules of nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere and release energy in the form of light. Nitrogen emits green light so it’s hardly surprising that the majority of aurorae are green since it comprises 79% of our atmosphere. Oxygen is responsible for red aurorae. Although aurorae
will one day become the eyes of a blind person. Guide Dogs supplies basic equipment and covers all veterinary and feeding expenses. Puppy walkers need to be with the puppy for most of the day, with access to a car, plus a yard or garden that is securely fenced. Mel Wharmby, Guide Dogs’ puppy walking supervisor, said: “It’s challenging and a real commitment to take a puppy into your home for a year but, with the support of Guide Dogs staff, our volunteers find it extremely rewarding and worthwhile.” To find out more, ring Steve Kersley on 07785 907728 or email Steve.Kersley@ guidedogs.org.uk
Bridgend Castle Players November 9th saw Bridgend Castle Players perform their Armistice production at Bridgend United Services Club, in aid of ‘Help for Heroes’ and The Royal British Legion ‘Poppy Appeal’. This was the first time the letter has been read in public and was received well by all. Many thanks was given to James Wilson for sharing this personal letter. Seaside News | 26
The second part of the evening was a performance of ‘The Prisoner’s Friend’ by Peter Drake - a tale about the everyday lives and trials of the soldiers in the trenches of the Great War. Martin Smidman conveyed the realities of the Great War superbly. The audience enjoyed singing along to songs from the period, during interludes in the play. Through Christian Eyes The January storms were very powerful this year doing a great deal of damage around the country and costing a number of lives. We escaped lightly in Porthcawl with only slight damage to one of the sea walls. Local photographers were able to take magnificent pictures of the waves crashing over the sea walls. There were a number of reasons for these storms: the heavy rainfall inland flowing down the estuary, the high winter tides pulled by the moon, the rotation of the earth, and the direction of the wind. These circumstances combined to put on a powerful display of nature’s strength.
Sometimes life’s circumstances combine against us and we go through ‘stormy times’. It may be any number of personal problems. But when those problems all come together they have a devastating affect on our lives. The Bible brings a message of comfort and strength for just such times. It says of God, ‘You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in distress, a shelter from the storm’ (Isaiah 25:4). If you are going through ‘the storms of life’ today, turn to God for help. He can help you through the storm. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Phil Powell feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Bridgend & the surrounding area and 3KLO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor
in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

WI & GUILD NEWS Big year for Townswomen’s Guild 2014 is an important year for Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild as we will be celebrating our 60th birthday in February. A luncheon will be held at the Grove Golf Club attended by our National Chairman and guests and the speaker will be Roy Noble. Alas we no longer have a founder member with us but in December Kath Davies, Gwen Watts, Peggy Vince, Evelyn White and Dorothy Thomas were presented with their 25 year awards and the guild is thriving 60 years on! Our January speaker was Mr David Anderson who gave a most interesting presentation on “Discovering Austriaâ€? aided by Mr Brian HaberďŹ eld
who had adapted David’s 25 year old photographs for modern screening. The beautiful pictures brought back memories to some members and encouraged others to visit for themselves. Also at the meeting it was agreed to send ÂŁ100 to Porthcawl Parkinson’s Society as a result of our Christmas party fundraising. Our next meeting is on 12th February 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when the speaker will be Mr Brian HaberďŹ eld, a very busy man, giving us “More of the Sameâ€?. Mynydd CynfďŹ g WI Tuesday 14th January 2014 saw our ďŹ rst meeting of the new year. It had to be held in the Talbot Institute as our usual venue is having a new roof ďŹ tted. We had a good turnout of members, our meeting was chaired by Enid Rymer who also read the minutes. New trips and events were discussed including the Glamorgan Show. Our guest speaker was Sister Gwyneth Poacher who gave us a very interesting talk on how the Sandville Self Help Centre has progressed from humble beginnings to the centre it is
now, and a trip for members to visit the Sandville centre in the summer was discussed. As friends of the Sandville Self Help Centre a cheque of ÂŁ250 was presented to Sister Gwyneth Poacher which she was pleased to accept on behalf of the Sandville.Tea and biscuits followed. Our next meeting will be on 11th February. Our guest speaker will be Sylvia Twilley and the talk will be on “Denman Collageâ€?. Here’s hoping the rain will have stopped by then and our new roof will be ďŹ nished. Christine Callaghan
Sker WI news The January meeting of Sker WI was held recently. The president Nora Williams welcomed members back after the Christmas break. Various outings and events are planned for the next couple of months including a charity event and pancake night. The WI resolutions were discussed and after going through the different options it was decided more provision should be made for non-acute hospital beds. The speaker for the evening was Mr Mike Boyles on “My kind of music. Mr Boyles has been into music since he was 14 when he learnt to play
the piano then the organ. He was an organist for 57 years and played at his local church where he tried to bring new music to the hymns. Mr Boyles demonstrated the different types of music he likes i.e. organ and orchestral. After a break for tea and biscuits Mr Boyles ran a quiz on music from different shows. The next meeting will be on Thursday 13th February at St David’s Church hall, Nottage at 7pm when the speaker will be Mr Alan Jones on Wenglish. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

FINANCE Mortgages, mortgages, mortgages! Welcome to a new year and renewed optimism in the housing market, together with available mortgage funding for a great many more people, following the longest and deepest downturn since 1929. Lenders are still revising rates due to increased competition, which can only be good in looking to satisfy the pent-up demand that has built up since the financial crisis turned the market on its head. Then, in April comes the Mortgage Market Review, where a whole new raft of rules comes in for mortgage advisers. This won’t present too much of an issue for long-serving independent advisers who’ve constantly been operating to the highest standards of advice for their clients. However, with banks and building societies having to ensure that, in order to offer mortgage advice going forward, all staff dealing in mortgages will have to be fully qualified (which currently is often not the case), this presents a much bigger challenge. There will be no more non-advised sales and
more people than ever could see the benefit of turning to independent advisers to find their ideal mortgage solution. I have been dealing in directing clients to the right mortgage for going on 27 years now, with the number of cases completed running to more than four thousand, hence quite some experience gained! With home visits available seven days a week, including after hours, the number of schemes available from an independent adviser, as well as the increasing number of schemes available for those aged 55-plus and into retirement, you too can enjoy a service that is second to none and guides you to the right solution. Call me whatever your mortgage requirements. Whilst it can never be guaranteed that a particular case will be approved, since you still have to demonstrate to lenders that you are likely to be a responsible borrower, I can nevertheless guide you through the maze. Call me NOW on 01656782545 for an informal chat.
Financial solutions Next year, One Life Financial Planning Ltd will celebrate its 10th year of providing impartial, independent advice. During that time we have built strong connections with many legal, accountancy, banking and commercial / personal lending firms. Finding a mortgage, commercial loan, auto enrolment provider, legal adviser, accountant etc. that’s best suited to your needs can be time consuming if you are experienced in business let alone if you are new to
business or buying your first home. As with Financial Advisers there are many firms available who offer these services but knowing who to turn may seem a daunting task. On the 1st January 2014 we launched a new company CR Ellis & Co Ltd with the aim of providing access to our professional connections to help make the task a little easier. Want to invest ethically? When it comes to investing ethically, as with any investment, it’s really important to fully understand the product that you invest in, the objectives of the fund, the types of companies it invests, the level of risk involved and whether its principles match your own. Just because a company describes itself as ‘ethical’, it doesn’t necessarily mean it meets your ethical criteria. This can make it difficult to make an informed investment decision. Some funds use vaguely
worded factsheets, which often contradict the types of companies that they actually invested in. With this in mind it is important to look beneath the surface of what a fund is really about. The better funds should be able to provide concrete examples of how they are making a positive impact and the type of positive industries they are investing in. If you would like to discuss ethical investments please do not hesitate to contact us.

Some things you need to know about ISAs An individual savings account (ISA) is a simple way of earning more interest on your savings than you would otherwise receive from a bank account. You are also not required to pay tax on any profits you make from the investment. For the tax year 2013/2014, adults in the UK are permitted to invest up to £11,520 into an ISA. The full amount can be invested in a stocks and shares ISA, whilst half (£5,760) Seaside News | 30
can be placed in a cash ISA. Due to the tax free nature of the returns from an ISA, it is recommended that you use your full allowance each year, as any remaining allowance cannot be carried over to the following year. If you decide to withdraw money from a cash ISA, it is important to note that the ISA cannot then be replenished to the full amount. As an example, if you paid £4,000
into an ISA over the course of the year before withdrawing £2,500, you would not then be able to pay £2,500 back into the ISA as this would take you over your allowance of £5,760. If you’re considering transferring your funds from one cash ISA into a new one, firstly be sure to check
the new ISA allows inbound transfers, and secondly, rather than transferring the money by withdrawing it from the original ISA, inform your new ISA provider of your intention and complete a transfer form. This will ensure your ISA retains its tax-free status.

HOME & GARDEN
Topstak adds to its ‘green’ team
Laleston Gardening Club Well the new year certainly came in with some force due to the weather, so armchair gardening took over, looking at seed and plant catalogues, decisions whether to try some of the new varieties, or stick to the usual? February, why not plant a window box of winter pansies, ready to put out when the weather settles. In February the second of the 2014 lectures is to be held on 10th February, 7.30pm at Cliff Cottage, “Useful tips on flowers and vegetables” by Clayton Radford. Here in Laleston the renovation is ongoing, like in a garden or a house project, one job leads to another. Again, as soon as weather permits, the builders will be back! The
date is set for our annual Plant Sale. Saturday 10th May at 10.30am. Last year there were just over 300 plants, this year the plans are to increase to 600, bedding plants, trailers, climbers, vegetables etc. Coffee and biscuits available, tickets £1. All proceeds to the club for the renovations. Bulbs are definitely showing in the gardens, and the street light is not going on until 5-10pm, days are getting longer! Gwen Bradford

Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club February – yuk! Historically the old English term for February is “Solmonath” meaning “mud month” and my waterlogged veg plot proves they weren’t wrong! Still there are plenty of things to do! Moss will start growing on your lawn before the grass so now is the time to start killing it with ferrous sulphate. Seed potatoes are available now, chit them in a light cool place, last year I tried Sarpo Mira very successfully, blight resistant and a fab spud! Try planting your early peas (such as “Douce Provence”) in plastic guttering, with draining holes drilled in the bottom then, when they are ready,
plant out by sliding them out of the guttering into a shallow trench – magic! Did you know: the first recorded conviction for drunken driving while in charge of a lawnmower was in 1995 in Norway, the man was well over the limit and driving on the road, he was sentenced to 24 days in jail! Saturday 1st March we have a coffee morning and book sale 10-12 in the Green Hall, do come – you can read while your drink! How does my garden grow? 1 part soil – 2 parts water – 3 parts wishful thinking. Chris Early

LEGAL Relationship advice The new year is a busy period for family solicitors who find that they are inundated with new clients seeking advice in relation to their personal situations. Either people have had a difficult Christmas and feel that they cannot tolerate an unhappy home life any longer, or they have been separated for some time and make a new year’s resolution to resolve any issues arising from a relationship which broke down some time ago. At the beginning of January 2014 a Government funded, 24 hour online guide went live offering advice to separating couples on how to deal with arrangements for children. It is run by a relationship charity and is funded by the DWP. It attempts to assist parents by taking them through a series of steps to see which arrangements will work best for them and then tries to reconcile any differences which have been identified between them.
At Melanie Lazarus and Co Family Solicitors we specialise in all aspects of family law including divorce, cohabitation, finances and children issues. We will also prepare your will for a fixed fee.
Now most absent parents see their children regularly and arrangements whereby the children divide their time equally between the parents are becoming more common. Family solicitors will undoubtedly welcome any tool which will assist parties in reaching agreement regarding their children, but it remains to be seen whether the guide will help parents who have a genuine difficulty in communicating with each other. In that instance it may be better for the parties to seek professional advice from a solicitor. If you have any queries regarding the foregoing article, please do not hesitate to contact Madeline Rand at Melanie Lazarus and Co as below. If alternatively you would like a specific legal query answered in the Seaside News, feel free to contact us via email at the email address below. Madeline Rand

DIVORCE - A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Traditionally January and February are the busiest time for matrimonial lawyers dealing with post Christmas divorce enquiries or problematic contact arrangements. With the lack of legal aid now available, many are now fearful of the cost implications of seeking the advice of a solicitor, but you can still obtain comprehensive legal advice and representation in an affordable and timely manner. Whatever the facts of your case, you should seek to clarify exactly what the issues are and consider the arrangements and proposals for the future of your marriage prior to meeting with your solicitor. This can help to reduce your costs and speed up the process. When considering a divorce and its implications on your matrimonial finances, you will need to provide the reasons for your separation to your solicitor. It is important that you take advice as to the procedure involved, as this could help you to decide whether you could complete some of the paperwork yourself to keep costs to a minimum, or whether you would prefer a solicitor to deal with all matters on your behalf. Generally we would advise that your matrimonial finances are settled before you apply for the final stage of the divorce (known as the decree absolute). It is imperative that any financial agreements reached between you and your ex partner are contained within a court document signed by both parties in order to provide you with protection now and in the future. Too often we hear of cases where clients have failed to seek proper advice in order to avoid legal costs, only to be left with debt liabilities from the marriage and the risk of future claims against their assets. The process does not have to be a long, drawn out affair, but in order to avoid future problems, a thorough analysis must be made of the matrimonial finances on your behalf to protect your position. Even if you decide to separate rather than divorce immediately, your finances can be resolved at this stage with the use of a separation agreement. We understand that many people often wish to obtain advice as to their rights but are fearful of the cost involved. However, with the help of a suitably qualified solicitor on both sides of a divorce, resolution is often achieved far sooner which will ultimately reduce the cost of a divorce in the future. This is your case and we can move at your pace to ensure that you get the best outcome possible. To enquire about appointments at our Porthcawl office please contact Natalie Thomas.

But I do think that women and men, should be aware of the different legal consequences that attach to marriage as opposed to cohabitation. Firstly, lets get rid of the myth of the “common law wife. The concept doesn’t exist. You can only become a wife if you go through a marriage ceremony. A wife is in a different legal position from a cohabitee if the relationship breaks down. If the legal title of the home is in the sole name of the male, the married female has far more protection under the Matrimonial Causes Act than the cohabiting female has under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act. Married spouses, on divorce, can claim a portion of each other’s pension pots and, if circumstances are such, may be able to obtain a maintenance order. This is not available to cohabitees. At death, if no will has been made, the rules of intestacy do not make any provision for a surviving cohabitee, although a claim under the Inheritance, Provision for Family and Dependants Act may be available if the survivor can show he or she was being maintained by the deceased. The surviving spouse however inherits all, or much of the estate, depending on its size. There are also more generous tax exemptions which apply in relation to inheritance tax on death of a married couple as opposed to unmarried folk.

In relation to the legal position of married and unmarried parents, this also differs. A married couple both acquire parental responsibility on the birth of their child. In contrast, an unmarried father only acquired it if he is registered as the father on the birth certiďŹ cate. So, I wish all readers a New Year ďŹ lled with “domestic harmonyâ€? – but don’t say you haven’t been warned! HEALTH & BEAUTY Meditation matters During the months of February and March we await the arrival of two special guests who will offer a day of meditation. Ajahn Sawat is a Thai Meditation Master from the forests of Thailand. I can’t describe what it’s like practicing with someone who says very little. The felt presence is particularly powerful. Language isn’t so important when someone displays a heartfelt presence. There is a huge difference. Come and spend a day with us on 15th February. Our next guest, I am told is absolutely wonderful, Sister Mercedes is
coming over from Ireland to spend some time with nuns of St Claire’s. Come and spend a day in her company on 1st March. And to top it all off, Phil Gardner is organising a day of Loving Kindness and Compassion Retreat Day on Sunday 2nd March. To book any of these days, please email me on evansneville@ aol.com or join our face book page ‘Meditation Matters – Bridgend’. These days are FREE, donation only. All retreat days at St Clare’s Prayer Centre, Newton, Porthcawl. Neville Evans
Hidden sugar in our food Oatmeal is naturally low in sugar but the pre-packaged, avoured variety is often packed with loads of added sugar. Protein bars, a smart snack option because they keep you full longer than carbohydrates but protein bars can be problematic because they’re sometimes ďŹ lled with sugar to make them taste better. Unsalted almonds or peanuts are a healthier choice.
Salad dressing especially the low-fat variety, can contain a lot of sugar. Opt for vinegar or lemon juice with olive oil instead. Milk You probably know whole milk contains saturated fat, but all milk contains sugar. Pair it with sugary cereal or oatmeal and you could be in for one heck of a morning sugar crash. (And don’t even ask about sugary milk drinks!!!) DORQ PDHVJZ\Q

brand contain up to 20 grams (or 5 teaspoons) of sugar per serving – that equals a big piece of fudge per “healthyâ€? yoghurt serving. Rather opt for plain yoghurt and add fresh fruit and honey to sweeten it. Breakfast cereals Have a look at the ingredient list of your favourite breakfast cereal. Most breakfast cereals are loaded with sugar to make it more palatable. The “healthierâ€? high-ďŹ bre, all bran akes contain up to 11g of sugar per 100g or around one and a half teaspoons of sugar. The sweeter avoured cereals that kids (and many adults) love so much contain up to 34g of sugar per 100g. That’s a whopping four teaspoons of sugar per 50g portion. The golden rule is CHECK THE INGREDIENTS listed on the packaging. Glyn Hardwicke, www. buysafer.ineways.eu
Canned soup Like canned vegetables, most canned soups have added sugar to extend their shelf life – some brands can contain several teaspoons of sugar per serving, make your own vegetable soup at home. Ketchup There’s reason ketchup goes so well with salty French fries - the sweetness from the sugar it contains balances the avor. (The same is true for barbecue sauce.) Sports drinks Maybe you have heard that sports drinks contain sugar but think of it like this: one drink has 310 calories. A 150 pound person would have to run for 3 miles to burn that off. Kind of reduces the beneďŹ t of working out. Yoghurt Most of us prefer the avoured ones but they all contain added sugar – even the low-fat and non-fat versions. Some

POEMS Be patient my good friends
Count your blessings
Be patient my good friends, For a spirits soul will survive, For death is just an earthly thing, And for eternity we will stay alive.
There’s dust upon the furniture, Stains where the paint should be, But I must count this blessing, That I have eyes that see. There’s a roar of passing traffic, Strident voices drawing near, I count this too a blessing That I have ears that hear. There are flinty paths of suffering, Barbed words that make us reel But we will count this blessing That we have a heart to feel And we’re filling up your suffering Who died upon the tree And we thank you for each pain you bore That we might be set free. Thank you for hue of rainbow, Glint of pollen on a bee And thank you too, when sight should fail
You think that we have left you You feel upset and all alone, But a spirit no longer need such things, As a body full of skin and bones. We can try to contact a medium, To pass a loved one’s message on, This may give those on earth some happiness, Just knowing their loved one hasn’t gone. The spirit world will never hurt you, But they may give you a little fright, Because some people will never believe, Unless they see a spirit with their own sight. David Boyce, Brackla
Yet still by faith we’ll see The glory of your kingdom And the beauty of your face And how can we count the blessings Of your amazing grace? Our ears may lose their sharpness Yet we still will hear your voice And feel your touch of gentleness To cause us to rejoice. How can we count the blessings Of the gift of each new day Bird song and clouds and sweet fresh air As we press on our way And grace, love and forgiveness, Heavenly life that will not end And though earth’s joys may pass away You’re still our faithful Friend? Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
Society See that smile it’s fake it’s called putting on a act. See that laugh, it’s fake. See her friends, they aren’t there when she needs them the most. See her life, it’s a whole bunch of falseness.
See that happy young girl, now she’s emotional, depressed and crying out for help. Abby John, Kenfig Hill
May the New Years bring us May the New Year bring us Happiness, May the New Year bring us Hope, May the New Year bring us Strength, To help us really cope.
May the New Year keep us from any Harm, May the New Year lower our anger, To help us all keep calm.
May the New Year bring us Energy, May the New Year bring us Wealth, May the New Year bring us Fitness, To help us keep in good health. May the New Year bring us Safety,
May the New Year bring us Lots of Smiles, May the New Year bring us Joys, May the New Year bring us Loads of memories,
To go with our Christmas Toys. May the New Year bring us what we need, May the New Year help us more, May the New Year keep us fulfilled, Deep into the bodies core. David Boyce Brackla

Happy New Year everyone! This month: Chinese inspired detox food Well the festive season of indulgence is over for another year. I for one had a great Christmas and New Year but am sure I’m not alone in feeling tired, sluggish and in dire need of a detox! Whereas detox diets have been conďŹ rmed as futile by The British Liver Trust, there are some health boosting foods that can help get us back on track. Inspired by Chinese cooking, below is a simple recipe for a Chinese cabbage soup that contains various ingredients packed full of health beneďŹ ts. Chinese cabbage or bok choy, can be found in larger supermarkets, and the health beneďŹ ts include: antioxidant protection, excellent for digestive health, blood pressure, immune support and blood and nerves. This recipe also contains roasted garlic. Aside from various health beneďŹ ts, roasted garlic tastes delicious. Roasted Seaside News | 42

NEW BOOK LAUNCHED AT STAGE DOOR, GRAND PAVILION Sustainable Wales advisor, Robert Minhinnick, launches his latest book, ‘Island of Lightning’, at the Stage Door, Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl, at 8pm, Wednesday, 12th February. At 160 pages, published by Seren for £9.99, it is a collection of over twenty separate pieces, set all over the world, from China, Manhattan, Buenos Aires and Malta. But Wales plays an enormous part in the book, with descriptions of the Porthcawl Elvis festival, a Cardiff salvage yard, trespassing in Penyfai, and a vivid account of the Cynffig river. ‘Island of Lightning’ is described by the publisher as” an exhilarating combination of poetry, magic realism and wanderlust”. Robert Minhinnick says: “‘Island of Lightning’ is set both home and abroad. Also it concerns my past when I was an enthusiastic trespasser in Cwrt Colman. “The collection concludes with a story of an imaginary future set in Pink Bay, when Wales is beset by alarming new weather. Highly appropriate considering recent events.” So, it’s a wide ranging new volume by this established Porthcawl writer, who has twice won Wales ‘Book of the Year’ and twice the Forward Prize for ‘best individual poem’. Music on the night will be provided by Peter Morgan. Entrance to the public is free. www.seasidenews.co.uk
Sebastian Faulks JEEVES AND THE WEDDING BELLS This is a witty and delightful novel which takes Wodehouse’s much loved characters and style and weaves a new story around them. Bertie Wooster, has returned from a very pleasurable sojourn in Cannes, and finds himself at the stately home of Sir Henry Hackwood in Dorset. Bertie is more than familiar with the country house set-up: he is a veteran of the cocktail hour. On this occasion, however, it is Jeeves who is to be seen in the drawing room while Bertie finds himself below stairs - and he doesn’t care for it at all. Love, as so often, is at the root of the confusion… but you will have to read this book and find out what Wooster is up to, for yourself. All these books and many more are available from any Bridgend Library free of charge. So whether you would like to read the latest best sellers or reread P.G .Wodehouse we can get hold of it. We also have books in large print or on disc as wells as CDs, DVDs, and children’s books. If you have a PIN with your library card you can renew and reserve library books online, and download ebooks and audio books to compatible devices. We also run Story-time and craft on Saturdays at 2.30pm (children 3-10) and Bounce and Rhyme (under 3s) on Tuesday mornings (10am). Hope to see you soon. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Art in focus This month I focus on a new exhibition Llareggub: Peter Blake Illustrates Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood. Sir Peter Blake is better known for his contribution to the Pop Art scene in Britain in the late 1950s. His work incorporates imagery from advertisements, music and entertainment, and is often presented in collage format. He is perhaps best known for his iconic album cover design for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. This exhibition is the culmination of a 25-year long project for Blake and is the first time ever that it is being shown to the public. It includes portraits of each of the characters in the cast, watercolours of the dream sequences and collages and paintings of scenes and locations in the fictional village
Stag’s World of Rock of Llareggub (try reading this backwards). A longtime admirer of Dylan Thomas, Blake has always been fascinated by the radio play and remembers first hearing Under Milk Wood while at the Royal College. The exhibition is an exploration of Dylan Thomas’ most
enduring work, and a platform for related events, which is all part of the centenary celebrations of Thomas’ birth. National Museum Cardiff Daily tours: 12:30pm free to the public! Josephine Lewington MA
Events @ The Green Room The Green Room is delighted to kick off their 2014 season of arts and cultural events with ‘The Way to my Mother’ on Friday 28th February, 8pm. The evening will be a lively, interactive, theatrical event, produced and hosted by local performance-maker Tracy Evans.
Recently awarded a development grant from WalesLab (National Theatre Wales), Tracy is currently researching her next performance piece, ‘My Real Mother’. When asked what to expect from The Green Room event she says “Maps! And discussions about travelling Seaside News | 46
and journeys, especially long journeys with family members…the way we get on each other’s nerves, or maybe the peace we find as we travel through the incredible Welsh landscape together. What music shall we listen to on the way?” The Green Room is the only regular arts event in Porthcawl to present work from a range of artists, from poets and musicians to film-makers and installation artists. Held on the first floor at Sussed (4/5 James St), the events are informal and relaxed. Guests are invited to bring their own bottle and to contribute a £3 donation towards the charity Sustainable Wales. Visit the website for forthcoming events www.sustainablewales.org.uk
What a start to the year! Ignored in the New Year Honours List, and my fab car – you know, the two-tone one (green and rust) – scrapped! Mind you, it was so old it was insured for Viking raids! Did see a few cover bands recently, but if I hear “Your Sex Is On Fire” or “I Predict A Riot” again, I’ll become a monk. Thank goodness I’ve received a copy of the new CD from Porthcawl’s “Wolfman Unchanged”. The group features former “Jeff Killed John”/”Bullet for my Valentine” bassist Nicki Crandle, guitarist Neil “Blender” Edwards, Lee “Train Wreck” Tottman and drummer Marcus. The CD
has five tracks, including “Black Eyed” and “Call Your Pet Master” recorded live at Bridgend’s Rock Club Hobos. Nicki describes their music as grunge punk and it’s refreshing to hear interesting original material. I look forward to seeing the lads live! My spies tell me there’s a brilliant Jam every Thursday night at The Royal Oak in Kenfig Hill, so I’ll get my new passport and give it a visit one night. Thanks for all the kind words about the column – even my minders are getting famous! Keep your news coming. Stag Marks 07979 971127
Bridgend Male Choir heads for Llangollen 2014 Bridgend Male Choir is delighted to have been invited to participate in the Male Voice Choir competition at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in July 2014. The choir last participated in 2005 when it finished just out of the prize money in fourth place in a competition won by Cor Godre’r Aran (Llanywllen, north Wales). At this stage other choirs invited for 2014 have not been announced, but there’s no doubting the standard will be extremely high again. Having finished in second place at both the Majestic Male Choir Competition, Torquay and International Isle of Man Festival at Douglas in 2013, the choir hopes to go one place better.
Learning the choir’s own choice of competition repertoire has already commenced under Musical Director, Rhiannon WilliamsHale and Accompanist, Stephanie Bailey at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bridgend, 7.30 pm on Thursday evenings. The Bridgend Male Choir can next be heard on Saturday 15th February at the Sony Theatre, Bridgend College Campus on Cowbridge Road, Bridgend. The concert will also feature the harmonious Vocelle Ladies Choir, Pontyclun and the Children’s Choir of Oldcastle School. The concert is in aid of St John’s Trust (Newcastle Hill). A film maker’s point of view I’ve worked in the film industry for 25 years, producing mainly local history documentaries, and during that time there has been great change in the way we record and retrieve moving pictures. When I started out, film still reigned supreme for prestige work, and broadcasters used video for news, current affairs and light entertainment. Despite having a few barbed comments from colleagues who had made the switch to video, I persisted with film, shooting both 16mm and 35mm for my productions, and during the time I have been making films, the broadcasters have worked their way through several video formats, and today everything is digital. I’ve lost count of the number of times people have looked at my trustworthy film
cameras and said: ”Are you still shooting film? Why haven’t you gone over to digital?” The answer is because I regard film as a greatly superior and reliable means of origination. Provided the negative is stored safely, it is always available to transfer on to the latest video or digital format. In the meantime, what will become of all the video tapes from a variety of formats used during the last 25 years? As the tape players become obsolete, how do you access your precious footage? I suspect that a lot of archive material has already been irretrievably lost. For more information, go to www. downwoodfilms.com Anthony Hontoir Picture: Anthony Hontoir and Eclair 35mm movie camera

in stunning south west France Mid Glamorgan Mixed Choir 2013 has ended with the choir singing at Zoar Chapel in Rhewceiliog, near Pencoed on the 19th December. It was a lovely evening with the singing of traditional Christmas carols and choir pieces. Everyone was treated to a solo by our Musical Director, Matthew Nash and not to be outdone Alec Brooks, our accompanist played his own jazz arrangement of “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas.” It was a fitting start to the last hectic days before Christmas! We will be there next year on the 18th December - maybe pencil it in! We had our first practice of 2014 on Thursday 9th January. It was a full house and four www.seasidenews.co.uk
people were looking to maybe joining us. We are always looking for new members, it could be the answer to a New Year’s resolution. It is a good time to join us as we are going back to basics with re-visiting singing and breathing techniques and also we will be learning brand new pieces!! We meet at the Bowl’s Pavilion in Pencoed on Thursday evenings 7.15 - 9.15pm. If you would like to join the choir please contact us on midglamorganmixedchoir@ outlook.com or on 07866 810579

“TAP” it out cycle club entertainment was provided by club sponsor, landlord and Steffen Jones. The highlight of the evening was Mark Jenkins showing that using his modern day dance techniques it is possible to blend Meatloaf with Beyonce and still look cool. Absolutely hilarious. Wishing all old and future members a great new year and hope you all succeed in your tough challenges that you have set yourselves. Saturday rides start at 9am and Wednesday night at 7pm from the Tap in Pyle. All very welcome. Any questions please email me on nickemorgan@ hotmail.co.uk KEEP ON TAPPING Nicky Morgan
Good Progress for Maritime Centre Good progress is being made with the Maritime Centre project plans and we are in line with our original timescale. The feasibility study will be completed in two weeks time after which time we will be arranging another public exhibition to give everybody chance to see how we are progressing and how we have taken on board the suggestions through our consultations. The groups vision is: To establish and sustain a high quality, all-weather, ‘all year round’ innovative and exciting destination which will be a ‘flagship’ delivering cultural, business, employment, health and ‘well-being’ benefits for the community, region and visitor alike; fully accessible, flexible and adaptable to cater for the needs of the individual, family and groups of all ages, Seaside News | 56

It is envisaged that the development will need around 60 part-time and full time posts offering a range of quality jobs. It is company policy that all paid staff recruitment will be made through advertisement and competitive interview, a completely transparent process. We have also decided to commence work immediately to set up a project office as a place to work and a place where residents and visitors can view our plans and keep informed of the progress. The weather wasn’t kind to cyclists during December; however club rides were well attended. Mileage was cut shorter but the intensity was taken up a level. The festive celebrations started on the 21st for all club members with a quick chairman’s ride up to the cycle centre at Glyncorrwg. For tea and coffee with a minced pie, all courtsey of the chairman himself. Then it was a quick dash back to iron our best clobber for the Christmas bash held at the Tap. 32 pairs of stilettos and highly polished brothel creepers merged on the Tap with limousines and Bentleys making the A48 at Pyle impassible at 7 o’clock. Southerndown and Ogmore surf report This last two months December and January, we have experienced storm after storm battering our shores and shifting sands and rocks around the beaches, with booming white water explosions creating a great spectacle to watch, at Porthcawl light house and along the cliffs from Ogmore by Sea Deeps to Southerndown. Both of which I photographed and put up on glamorgancoast.co.uk along with aerial photos of Ogmore by Sea on a sunny day (with no wind). The car park at Southerndown Bay was wrecked once again with big pebbles covering the tarmac and smashing walls
and buckling steel gates. The pebbles are banked up higher than the wall now. At the top of beaches sand has been stripped away exposing rocks never seen before. With such strong winds, local surfers searched for sheltered surf further east up the channel for rare surf spots or headed west to Gower or Pembs. On one still big swell morning the large tide had been dropping back 3 ½ hours and yet we had 3-4ft glassy surf. It is only the second time I have seen surf like that on a large dropping tide. And such spectacular white water everywhere! David A. Batten
Porthcawl Runners monthly news It’s been a busy few weeks for a lot of members with races coming thick at this time of year. The Pudding Run, hosted by our friends at Brackla Harriers, was again a great success. There were seven members taking part with Tom Davis leading the way home. The Porthcawl Parkrun, held every Saturday morning 9am was very busy over the holidays with the festive run being well supported by those in fancy dress. Thanks to Steve Brace who organised mince pies and a hot drink for all runners and volunteers. Even the bad weather, which battered the promenade, failed to interrupt proceedings as a
contingency route came into play for the first time and was a great success. There were 24 members at the Porthcawl Lions Boxing Day run, which was held in lovely sunshine. There was a great atmosphere with the route up to Rest Bay being very well supported by the people of Porthcawl. A very wet New Years Day didn’t put off the 88 runners who took part in the annual race around Kenfig and through the flooded lanes to Maudlam. Thanks to Cornelly Striders and the Prince of Wales for putting on the race. Anthony Phillips

Rest Bay SLC have enjoyed an excellent 2013, having begun the year trying to recover from the burglary at the clubhouse. There were many highlights throughout the year, and in the next few editions of the Seaside News, I’ll go into more detail about these. 1. Our Nipper section goes from strength to strength, with no shortage of newcomers, and some outstanding carnival results. 2. Two of our younger members getting selected for the Welsh Team. Mixed emotions on this, as the club hoped that at least two more members would have joined them, but sadly the selectors did not agree. 3. New Junior lifeguards and NARS candidates work hard in tough conditions to achieve their awards. 4. The club’s bike ride from Land’s End to Porthcawl,
SENIORS
raising funds for a replacement all terrain vehicle (quad). 5. And of course our annual presentation night where the efforts of everyone were recognised. Yet another well organised and memorable occasion. Club members are busy preparing for the Stillwater competitions as this edition goes to print, so good luck to all those who give it a go. Our continued thanks go to all coaches and helpers who make it all happen, and let’s hope 2014 is as successful and enjoyable as 2013 was. Porthcawl surf report Records have tumbled, and legends been set. The winter of 2013-14 has so far been one of the best anyone can remember for surfers. So good, in fact, it’s likely some of the general public might have noticed too. By the time Superstorm Hercules rocked in to town in early January, surfers were already pinching themselves. An enormous swell between Christmas and over the New Year had given us days of world class surf, with water temperatures a couple of degrees above average. And then came Big Saturday. Bearing in mind we need winds to be low on land, it was on the day between the huge storms that the waves were at their best. As the tide dropped off late- to mid-morning both most of Porthcawl’s surf spots turned on, as big as they’ve ever been surfed clean. Rhino, Angus and Bennet Ruddle, Martin Aaron, Julian Pritchard, Tim Aylett and several others made it out to where some proper bombs were coming through in the Point, while Ian Bowen decided to take on enormous Rest. It was the calm before the superstorm, but the swell had arrived early. With the winds picking up overnight, a second heroic session took place at Rest on the Sunday just before everyone ran for cover - Rhino again in the thick of it, with notable mentions to Steve Horn and Breige Lawrence for taking on the mammoth paddleout in horrendous conditions. The Monday when the storm made landfall sent local
Success for Porthcawl Tang Soo Do surfers driving all over the country looking for shelter, with rumours abounding that Math Hapgood, George Schofield, Rob Blythe, Martin John and James Kinsella surfed a rare pointbreak out west, while Julian Hamilton and several others went to Devon. The details aren’t important anyway - because this is what such swells are about: the search, the adventure and the legends that spring up. With the surfing out the way, the next thing for the dedicated few was the clean up! Most of WCSC attended a beach clean at Coney organised by Jenny Roe and Mick Tinning, while others tackled the boulders at Rest with Hugh from Porthcawl Surf. The Coney mission turned up the biggest pile ever collected in one go, and it’s amazing to think this was run by people who drive down from Cardiff to do their surfing. The local gratitude to Jenny and Mick cannot be overstated and SEASIDE NEWS thinks it’s only fair these two now get keys to the Republic! Such months of great surf draw the community together, and it’s great to see. Next up in WCSC’s calendar is a movie night at Malc’s Cafe on the evening of Friday 7th Nov featuring ‘This Time Tomorrow’. All are welcome, and details will be available shortly on the website as well as via the Facebook and Twitter feeds. See you in the water. After a busy summer of demonstrations at local schools, Porthcawl Lions and other charity events came the start of a busy Autumn Tang Soo Do Tournament Season. Porthcawl Tang Soo Do had representatives at the Dragon Bristol Open Championships, the Phoenix North West Open Championships and the TTF National Championships all of whom gave excellent performances in their respective age and grade categories and across all of the disciplines, sparring, forms and weapons forms. From these three tournaments the medal haul was an amazing 15 Gold, 12 Silver, and 17 Bronze. Although Tang Soo Do is a traditional Martial Art rather than purely a sport, there are plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself and test your skill against others.
The class is now looking forward to the New Year with tournaments lined up in Cardiff, London and Cambridge in the UK and also further afield in Amsterdam and Boston USA.. The class now in its fourth year continues to grow from strength to strength and welcomes all members of the family. If you are interested in taking up a new hobby, why not try a martial art, we are running free taster sessions throughout January at All Saints Church Hall, Victoria Avenue on a Tuesday and Friday evening. Just come along to the class that suits, Tigers 4-6 yrs old 6.006.30pm, Dragons 7-12 yrs old, 6.30-7.30pm and Seniors 13 yrs+ 7.30 - 8.30pm. For further details please call 07788482450. Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim Record number of swimmers Porthcawl’s 49th Christmas Morning Swim saw 1044 swimmers taking the traditional dip at Sandy Bay, whilst an estimated 2000 plus spectators cheered them on. The swim is truly a family event with many generations of the same family taking part. The swimmers came from all over the UK and even some from overseas who were coming to South Wales to see family or friends over the Christmas period. The procession was made up of male and female of all ages, many of whom were in fancy dress. They were led from the Hi-Tide Inn to the beach by Victor Davies and Chris Hughes each now clocking 49 swims each to their name.
Porthcawl Coastguard led the procession of swimmers the short run through the spectators to the sea. Swim Chairman, Nicola Willis commented “Again we are grateful to all who supported our swim. I would like to thank all swimmers, spectators, individuals, businesses, fellow ‘Buckaneers’ and organisations who help in so many ways. We are very pleased with the success of this years ‘swim’ and are already planning the big one - the 50th anniversary, next Christmas.” Ian Stroud, Press Officer Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim

Commercial Print Wales - New Year, New Business. As most of the other businesses around the Village Farm Industrial Estate, Pyle, quietened down over the Christmas period, Commercial Print Wales were busy at work preparing for their relaunch in time for the New Year. The company, which was founded as Picton Press Ltd back in 1969, was one of the first businesses ever established on the Industrial Estate, which is located just outside Bridgend, South Wales. Since then, Commercial Print Wales has gone from strength to strength whilst still holding true to the traditions and family values of the original business. Today, the company has become a stalwart for a number of local businesses around the South Wales area, who come looking to expand their brand through printed materials. The decision to re-launch and reenergize the company was an easy one to make, as more and more businesses from all over the UK and abroad were looking to take advantage of Commercial Print Wales’s capabilities. Among those capabilities is a huge capacity to produce anything from business cards

company First 4 Numbers, who have produced race numbers for The London Olympics, London Marathon, British Athletics and the IAAF World Championships, the company can only increase its stride. In the last twelve months alone, it has invested over half a million pounds in new technology and resources, which means they can offer exceptional printing quality, quickly and efficiently.
