Thank you Dear Editor, May I use your letters page to thank the gentleman who came to my aid when I fell outside Walters shoe shop in John Street, Porthcawl on Wednesday 31st October. My enquiries as to his identity have been fruitless but I know that he has asked about my condition since. I’ve been able to thank others who helped at the incident personally, but not this gentleman. After excellent treatment at Bridgend POW Hospital A&E, I have now fully recovered from my head and wrist injuries and I want him to know how grateful I am for his intervention and care. Discarded dog pwp! Dear Editor, Like so many locals and visitors, my husband and I enjoyed a stroll along the coastal pathway from Rest Bay towards Pink Bay on New Year's Day. Some couples were pushing prams and complaining of dog mess on the wheels. It was then I noticed the large number of used dog poo bags
Great Daffodil Appeal 2013
The dangers of Chinese lanterns
Dear Editor, I am appealing to your readers to volunteer for Marie Curie Cancer Care’s Great Daffodil Appeal, and help people with a terminal illness in South West Wales get the care they need. We’re looking for people who can donate an hour of their time this February and March to hand out the charity’s iconic daffodil pin in return for donations. Marie Curie nurses provide free care to local people with a terminal illness in their own home, but to continue providing this vital care we need people to help make this year’s Great Daffodil Appeal a success. If you’re able to donate an hour of your time to help someone in their final hours then please contact me on 01792 461435 or visit www. mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil. KATY TAINTON Swansea
Dear Editor I am writing to warn people about the dangers of Chinese lanterns. Whilst I understand grieving relatives and friends wishing to honour their loved ones by sending these lanterns into the sky, they should be aware of the fact that what goes up must come down. On Saturday 19th January I happened to have an early night and luckily was in bed reading when my outside security light went on (if I'd been in my lounge I would not have been aware of this). Upon investigation I found a lantern burning on my plastic shed and
just discarded on mainly the grassy bank alongside the foot path. I could not see a disposal bin for such rubbish but that is still no excuse for dog owners to dispose of their dog's mess in such a careless manner. I hope that BCBC will provide dog mess bins in strategic places along the pathway and by doing so, prevent the awful sight that blights such a fantastic walkway. RUTH TRIGG Porthcawl

Archaeology Cymru Hill-Fort Coastal Survey
Dear Editor, I am pleased to announce that Archaeology Cymru has started its recording of the erosion to our coastal hill-forts: from Sully
managed to put water on it until the burner eventually was extinguished. In that shed are paint strippers, paint, a gas cylinder used for camping also straw and hay for my rabbit, whose cage (made of wood) is next to the shed, so not only would the shed have gone up in smoke the lantern could have landed on top of the rabbit in the first place, and burnt him to death before igniting the shed's contents and possibly my downstairs flat and the one above. I really think these lanterns should be banned or alternately sent up on a tethered line so they are controlled safely without danger to people or animals. Before now these lanterns have landed in fields after they have burnt out and horses and other animals can get entangled in the wire frame. So please think before you send these potentially dangerous lanterns up into the sky. MS J HOLBUTT Porthcawl
through to Dunravern. We aim to examine the changes occurring to the Iron Age hill-forts; mainly constructed 2,300 years ago, which we welcome public participation. If any readers would like to become involved on a Monday morning every week, they are welcome to contact myself on karljlangford@hotmail.com or telephone 07751 255725. KARL-JAMES LANGFORD

Dear Team, I would just like to say well done with your publication. I'm from Port Talbot originally, then I moved to London and worked in publishing for 20 years. I set up my own local mag and website in Crystal Palace: www. palacemag.co.uk so I know how difficult it is to set up a local mag. I gave up in the end and moved to Pen-y-Fai and I'm now teaching eCommerce and Information Systems at Swansea Met Uni! The reason I thought I'd drop you a line is regarding a website I use which may be of use to yourself, if you are not aware of it: www. fixmystreet.co.uk It's a really good site for reporting problems to the council and putting pressure on them to get things fixed. I was out running today
Crossing swords
Dear Editor, If it's possible I would like to thank the friends myself and my German Shepherd, Troy, have made over the last eight years while on our walks on Locks Common. Sadly, Troy passed away on the 8th January. He was eight years old. Again I would like to thank every one we met. JEFF COOPER Porthcawl
Dear Editor, I greatly appreciated Mr James "Jack" Carter's comments in last month's edition. Mr Carter not only proves he was a very brave man during the war, winning the DFC and equally brave in peacetime by crossing swords with the unusual and disjointed Avril Lake. Perhaps during the past years I might have monopolised the letter space of the Seaside News and following Avril Lake's outburst, I feel it is only right that I should now take a back seat in order to give other residents the opportunity to express their views.
and noticed some fly tipped rubbish, so I took a photo of it and sent it to the site. You can check how reports are progressing and get emailed updates. It's also a good way to see what are the main problems in the local area which could form the basis of an editorial piece. In the end I embedded the site into my website. Like anything it is only useful if enough people are aware of it or make use of it. Best wishes for the future. CHRIS THOMAS Pen-y-fai

Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School
On Friday 4th January 2013, Welsh Government First Minister, Carwyn Jones and Westminster Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Environment, Huw Irranca-Davies, visited Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School, Bridgend to lead a day on education in global citizenship and sustainable development. The Welsh Government First Minister described the part the country of Wales plays in the global need to develop a society that is energy-conscious and sustainable. Together, they addressed over four hundred students
about Wales and its position in Europe and the world. As well as dealing with concerns regarding energy, both visitors spoke of the incredible beauty of Wales and the welcome Wales provides to visitors from around the world. Headteacher, Rev Dr Philip Manghan, thanked both men for their involvement in the school’s programme on global citizenship and sustainable development. At Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School, we are committed to forming young people who are fully aware of their roles and responsibilities in creating a society that is just, fair and sustainable as Christian stewards of creation. Dates for your diary: inset day: 15th February; half term:18th-22nd February; Year 11 parents' evening: Tuesday 12th February; Year 12-13 parents' evening: Wednesday 27th February. REV DR MANGHAN
Spring term news from St John’s School We started the spring term with musical and artistic celebrations as several pupils gained merits in recent instrumental and singing examinations and Josh Olsen from Year 5 has a role singing with the Welsh National Opera over the next few months. Further celebrations took place when the Deputy Mayor of Porthcawl visited a Friday assembly to present prizes to Alana, Harvey and Ella, Year 4 pupils who had won the top three prizes in the Town Council Poster Competition held before Christmas. Our senior pupils have been hard at work with GCSE and

having been awarded Fairtrade School status for the second time. I would like to thank the staff, pupils and parents who have worked so hard to help us gain this award.
The start of term has been a busy time at St Clare’s, with pupils across the Senior School sitting their January examinations. It is an important time for GCSE and A-level students and we wish them all the best. In January we also launched our new out-of-hours service which allows pupils to be dropped off early before school
Nottage Primary We had a wonderful musical end to the autumn term with several wonderful concerts held at school and our carol service at All Saints Church. A big thank you to all the staff for their dedication and hard work and thanks to our parents, for providing such wonderful costumes and for attending in great numbers. We also raised a great deal of money for the Mayor of Porthcawl's charities by holding a raffle. We started the spring term

school examinations and preparations are underway throughout the school for our annual Eisteddfod which is always a very enjoyable day. We are also making arrangements for our Saturday Open Morning on 9th March. This will be an opportunity for current parents and other interested parties to visit the school and find out more about the excellent education, the range of after-school activities, the extra support and expertise offered to dyslexic pupils and the great pastoral support for all pupils. If you would like to visit the school before that date please call the office as I would be very happy to show you around. MRS C A CLINT Headmistress 01656 783404, www. stjohnsschool-porthcawl.com
begins and be collected up until 6pm. These pupils can take part in our after school club, ‘Xtra!’ where they are offered a range of fun and exciting activities as well as a healthy tea before going home. The club has been very popular so far with pupils from across the school enjoying board games, crafts and play activities. Rehearsals are now fully underway for this year’s musical, ‘Dunsinaine High,’ our own version of Macbeth with a modern, rock twist. After the success of last year’s musical our pupils are perfecting their performances ready for the show which is being held from 6th to 9th March. Tickets will be on sale soon, and anyone who would like more information can contact the school on 01656 789966. MR JOHN AGUILAR

Little Footsteps Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a great start to 2013! We would like to start the year off on a positive note, just to let you all know we have recently received a grade of '5' once again in our environmental health inspection, so well done to all of our staff who have gained our 'OCDs' in cleaning! We would like to welcome two new members of our team and we would like to thank all existing staff for the past year – what a great success – thanks to you all for making the children's time spent in our nursery a memorable one. We would like to let you know about our themes that the children will be experiencing this term. In South Road our
West Park Primary West Park has welcomed the children back from a busy Christmas break and we are moving into our new term. The Christmas concert at the Grand Pavilion was a great success once again and enjoyed by parents and children. A big thanks to everyone who made it possible. Once again Barclays Bank have been very generous in supporting the school with its pound for pound scheme to match £750 of raffle monies – a huge thank you to them! Our Nursery and Reception
toddlers will be experiencing the theme of 'up in the air' and the preschool theme is 'transport'. In our Rest Bay nursery our toddlers will be also experiencing the theme of 'transport', our preschool children will be experiencing the theme of 'fairy tales'. Watch out for a catch up in the next article on where the children have visited both locally and further afield to enhance their learning experiences within their themes. Don’t forget our holiday club for February half term – we shall be having a week of 'look what I can grow and cook', come and join in the fun. Please ring us on 01656 858381 for more information. Thank you for your support.

Porthcawl Comprehensive With Christmas a distant memory, we focus upon the New Year, new term and the challenges ahead. I am delighted to start 2013 with news of outstanding success: Heulwen Everton and Dan Pugh-Bevan (both members of the school’s Head Team) have
been offered places at Oxford University; Heulwen to read Law and Dan to read Music with an Organ Scholarship. We are so proud of these two fine, young people and wish them every success. This year, our school show is 'Jesus Christ Superstar', our thirty-fifth successive musical production and a tradition of which we are very proud. The

Musical duo go national Two young Bridgend County Borough violinists have achieved national recognition for their outstanding talent. 11-year-old Macie Wallis from St Robert’s R.C. Primary and 12-year-old Rhianwen Keirl from Porthcawl Comprehensive have been selected to join the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. Composed of children between seven and 13 years old from across the UK, the orchestra offers the young musicians a life-changing experience where they are guided by top professional musicians, meet a range of people and perform on a national stage. Having been members of
Bridgend Youth Orchestra for over four years, the girls are no strangers to success as they were both also selected to become members of the Four Counties Youth Orchestra a year ago. Macie is the only primary school pupil to have ever been selected for the Four Counties Youth Orchestra. The duo will be attending a range of residential and nonresidential courses during the coming months, with a variety of regional and national concert performances also in store. If your child wants to learn how to play a musical instrument, or is interested in joining Bridgend Youth Orchestra, contact Jeff Ryan, Music Coordinator on 01656 642658 or email Jeffrey.Ryan@bridgend. gov.uk LUKE FOX BCBC

They look for and examine insects, signs of wildlife and vegetation. They are also cultivating a patch of land near the classroom and growing vegetables. The children sow the seeds and then tend the plants on Weeding Wednesday. Simon Richardson sent in the torch that he lit the cauldron with in Cardiff. It was taken to every class to show all the pupils and staff. Thank you Simon.
Last term £25.36 was raised for the Poppy Appeal and £78.25 for Children in Need. Thank you to everyone for your generosity. This term has started with an appeal for items to recycle, e.g. old mobile phones, coins, jewellery etc. House points at the end 2012 stand at: Ty Afon: 611; Ty Felin: 579 and Ty Ysgol: 618. Class 2 had an eggs-eedingly eggs-citing afternoon recently. Free range eggs were donated to the class. Half the children chose to boil some, and the other half scrambled theirs. They all enjoyed the results of their cookery lesson with bread
Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sger Year 6 girls had an insight into the work of the early years’ classes recently when they visited Miss Evans’ ‘Reading Café'. The café is a new initiative designed to encourage the younger pupils to enjoy books and stories with their parents. The staff dressed up as pirates for the session, read a pirate story and led the children on a ‘treasure hunt’. The children then enjoyed making ‘golden necklaces’ from pasta, supported by Year 6 who now plan to lead a future session based on their own stories. As part of Year 5 and 6 ‘Crossing the Boundaries’ theme work we recently visited the Welsh Government Senedd

building in Cardiff Bay. The focus of our visit was children’s rights. We had a very interesting day learning about the world of politics and the visit has resulted in substantial discussion and debate back in the classroom. Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a visit from Warburtons bakery last week and took part in a healthy sandwich workshop. This was the beginning of their healthy eating theme and has led to a challenge of designing a week’s worth of healthy lunch boxes. We are now looking forward to taking part in the sponsored Powershot challenge and seeing who wins the Golden Boot for the fastest travelling ball. We are sure the competition will be fierce! YEAR 12 OPEN EVENING 6.00pm 13th March 2013 To be held at 6.00 pm Wednesday 7th 2012 The school is proud to hold its Annual Open Evening for those students who wish to enter the Sixth Form in September 2013. Any student or parent interested can obtain more details and the “welcome pack” by emailing:
year12openevening@ porthcawlschool.co.uk Alternatively you may telephone 01656 774100. Porthcawl is a traditional school with a proven track record of excellence for all in Years 12 and 13. AS and A2 results consistently compare very favourably with local and national figures.
The A2 pass rate was over 99%, almost 30% of papers sat were an A* or A grade pass.
This is what Estyn (School Inspectors) said about Sixth Form education in Porthcawl:“Teachers are well qualified and committed. There are sufficient suitably qualified and experienced staff to deliver the school’s planned curriculum effectively. Teachers in the Sixth Form are highly qualified, experienced and are deployed well to ensure all students are provided with every opportunity to succeed.” “Sixth Form students are mature, well-motivated young adults with a wide variety of talents and interests who display confidence without arrogance and are personable and at ease with visitors to the school. Their behaviour is very good and outstanding relationships exist between students and teachers”. “Students make very good progress through their Sixth Form studies and the vast majority of students stay in school for two years before progressing to further or higher education”. Students are confident in their ability to think and work independently and take a leading role in a wide range of activities in school and the local community. Their contributions are often outstanding and, through on-going work and involvement, continue beyond the students’ life in the school”. “Communication and numeracy standards are very good and the use of IT is integral to many tasks presented to the students. Standards in the use of wider key skills are often outstanding”. Seaside News | 17
Cynffig news
It is with great pleasure that I start my column with the news that we are once again proud to be the top performing school in Bridgend in the banding. This follows on from our inspection report last year where we gained 13 excellent
gradings out of a possible 15. This term we welcome two new members of staff to our school. Mr Michael Stephens joins us as an assistant headteacher. We also welcome Mr Haydn Jones as our bursar/ finance manager and like Mr Stephens he is part of the Senior Leadership Team. Before I finish this column I would like to pay tribute to the staff and the pupils of our school. I was humbled to be awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours List and would like to publicly dedicate it to our teachers who go the extra mile for our children. Now is the time when parents are making final decisions about the school they want their child to attend. This year we have more pupils wanting to join us than ever before. For those who were unable to visit us during the open evening please feel free to contact us on 01656 740294. SUSAN DAVIES

Boo! Hiss! Hooray! Once again a large group of eager, excited children were treated to a spectacular seasonal pantomime experience - thanks to the Rotary Club of Porthcawl. This time around 50 children from Porthcawl Primary School booed and hissed on cue while watching the story of Sleeping Beauty unfold at the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl. They cheered Josh the Jester (once again, an amazing performance by Stefan Pejic) They laughed at Vern Griffiths as Nurse Nanny Nora and held

Make 2013 the year you change someone else’s life People make several resolutions at this time of year – usually to diet, get fit or quit smoking. This year, Bridgend County Borough Council is asking residents to think about making a difference to someone else’s life in 2013 and consider fostering. Over the past year, there has been an increase of 8% in the number of young people and children coming into the authority’s care. As a result, the council’s fostering service has a shortage

Children really benefit from the stability of a happy home and helping them to reach their full potential can be very rewarding. “I’d really encourage people to contact the team and come along to our regular meet and greet events where they can talk to existing carers.” Foster carers receive extensive training and full support, and receive an allowance for their role. Dental provision falling short locally Food glorious food
‘Food glorious food’ sang Oliver and his fellow orphans as they queued up to receive a meagre bowl of gruel. Wasting any food would have been a long way from their minds. It appears it is something we don’t contemplate very often either. In Wales in 2009/2010, we threw away enough food to fill two-thirds of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff or 410,000 tonnes. This is equivalent to £420 per household or £8 a week. The most wasted item? The potato. This is not only bad for our pockets but the environment too. Food that goes in the bin has already had an impact
Tourism in the area
www.visitwales.co.uk
As Shadow Welsh Tourism Minister I have been visiting tourism attractions and facilities throughout the area. This sector is very important to the Welsh economy and supports thousands of jobs. That’s why it was very disappointing to learn about cuts in the overseas marketing budget made by the Welsh Labour Government. Figures just released reveal that they have not spent a penny promoting Wales in two major European countries since 2010. The countries are Spain and Ireland – two of the very few

on the environment; having been produced, wrapped and transported, but once it goes into landfill, it produces methane gas. A new campaign has been launched to raise awareness of simple measures people can take to reduce the amount of food they throw away; planning meals, reducing portion sizes, eating leftovers and understanding the difference between a best before and a use by date. Recycling is also important. If food has to be thrown out, it can be turned into fertiliser and or used to generate electricity. countries which have good direct links to Wales. The government is missing a massive open goal here. There are flights from seven different Spanish airports to Cardiff while ferries to Ireland go daily from Pembroke, Fishguard and Holyhead. The government almost halved its marketing budget last year which is short-sighted in view of the economic uncertainties in Wales. It must look again at this budget before writing a blank cheque to buy Cardiff Airport. There are other ways of supporting the airport which do not entail pouring millions of pounds of Welsh taxpayers’ money in at a time when spending on the NHS is being axed to the tune of half a billion pounds. Last week the Welsh Liberal Democrats Leader, Kirsty Williams, strongly criticised the Welsh Government after figures on the NHS Direct website revealed that many dental practices across Wales are not accepting new NHS patients, whilst in some areas it is virtually impossible to register as an NHS patient with a local dentist at all. In 2006, the Welsh Labour Government set a 100% target for everyone in Wales to have access to an NHS dentist. Only five of the 19 dental practices in the Bridgend area
BAVO awarded £1million to help give local communities a stronger voice Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO) has been awarded £1million by the Big Lottery Fund for the next four years. This will help give communities in Bridgend County Borough a stronger voice in local decision making and to help people speak out to influence the decisions that affect their own community and their lives. Through the Big Lottery ‘Community Voice’ programme, BAVO will help local communities influence policies and decisions that affect them so their needs are better met through the seven projects they will be working on. are accepting new NHS patients. In the rest of my region the situation is worse. It is unbelievable for example that out of the 40 or so dentists in Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Gower, not a single one is accepting new NHS patients. That means that Bridgend residents are competing with patients from the west to register with the few available practices for regular dental treatment. Just stating that everyone should have access to a dentist isn’t enough, there has to be action too. Labour has presided over a dentistry service that penalises people depending on their income and where they live. Under Labour, dentistry in Wales is a far from universal service. PETER BLACK AM

2,040 beneficiaries will benefit including disabled people, young adult carers, people who self-harm, older people (particularly those aged 50 – 60), people from the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender community, people with learning disabilities and residents from the Ogmore Valley. BAVO’s Chief Executive Officer, Heidi Bennett said: “The common aim of the various projects is to support organisations and individuals, particularly minority groups and groups that find it difficult to participate. In helping them have a voice and to actively contribute to decisions about services that are designed for them or are supposed to meet their needs, we feel service providers will be in a better place to deliver good services and make improvements." SHOUT about Porthcawl's potential! Many thanks to Porthcawl SHOUT for their invitation to be their New Year guest speaker at Trinity Church, discussing a number of local issues. Naturally, of interest to the audience was regeneration, and the current improvements to the harbour are an important starting point in attracting further interest and investment in Porthcawl. Work is progressing well on the new breakwater wall, new marina gate, pontoon system and sluice gates which complements the refurbishment of Porthcawl's 19th century lighthouse. Visitors along the seafront can keep up to date with the information displays and look at the interesting temporary urban artwork around the site. It was extremely helpful to get further feedback from local
residents on ideas for regeneration, which made it clear that attracting private investment is crucial for Porthcawl to realise an ambitious vision of an evermore outstanding seaside town with high quality facilities and attractions for residents and visitors alike. We all are agreed on the need to meet future demands across all areas from leisure to health provision, retail to tourism. Providing a wide range of amenities and boosting trade requires supporting local traders, encouraging entrepreneurs and attracting private investment. Lets remember, we have to promote Porthcawl to the very best of our ability. Shout about Porthcawl's potential! CARWYN JONES

Leader’s life One in four drivers in Bridgend County Borough area admitted to parking illegally in bays meant for disabled drivers in a recent Welsh Government survey. I don’t know about you, but this sort of inconsiderate behaviour really makes my blood boil. Disabled bays are a certain size and in a certain location for a reason. It’s appalling that another driver would take that place just because it’s more convenient to them. This is one of the reasons we’re cracking down on problem car parkers; this April we’re launching a new civil parking enforcement service which replaces South Wales Police traffic wardens.

It’s great to see the new £3.2m Porthcawl Marina taking shape. With most of the off-site work now complete, foundations for the extended eastern breakwater are in, the harbour walls have been strengthened and abutments for the marina’s new lockgate have been precast. Preparations are underway for draining the harbour basin, and a temporary barrage is being set up to keep the tide at bay. Once this is in place, we will
Our team of civil enforcement officers will patrol the local area to offer advice and support to drivers, and to respond to reports of problems. We won’t be clamping, but we will be clamping down! We’re giving our enforcement officers the power to issue fixed penalties of up to £70 to offenders. We believe this scheme will improve safety and accessibility in local communities and help to provide easier access for pedestrians, cyclists, disabled people, public transport, delivery drivers and the emergency services, as well as help those businesses who are regularly bothered by problem parkers. Leader of BCBC be able to focus on excavating the harbour floor to create a permanent body of water which will ultimately be used to provide 70 pontoon berths for leisure, commercial and visiting boats. A new pontoon system has been manufactured, and the marina lockgate has been constructed by a specialist firm based in Holland. As you can imagine, the lockgate is a particularly impressive size, and will be shipped over for installation as the project nears completion. I think that the new marina is going to really benefit local trade and tourism, especially as we set about establishing Porthcawl as an official Water Sports Centre of Excellence, and I’m looking forward to seeing it open for the first time this summer. Kenfig Hill Air Cadets help with bag packing at Morrisons Air cadets and staff from Kenfig Hill spent a weekend bag packing in Morrisons Store in Baglan. On Saturday the cadets were supervised by Sgt (ATC) Kevin Gould, Sgt (ATC) Richard Peckham and Civilian Instructor Kinsey Williams. Sunday saw the return of Sgt (ATC) Richard Peckham along with Civilian Instructor Chris Lewis and Civilian Committee members Mrs Claire Norris and Mrs Lindsay Thomas. The bag packing weekend is becoming an annual event in our calendar and the cadets really enjoy meeting the public. The customers at Morrisons were really generous this year and the amount collected over the two days was £2,268.88, counted and bagged by Mr

The funds raised will go towards subsidising the cadets in various activities such as weekend camps at MoD St. Athan, Summer Camp, equipment for adventure training and various other activities. This was the last planned activity for 2012 and everyone at 2117 (Kenfig Hill) Squadron is looking forward to the challenges and activities planned for 2013. We are in talks with several locations to run public events and we also have quite a few investigations coming up as the year progresses. You can follow us on facebook or view our website www. paranormalinvestigatorscymru. co.uk and contact us there. To be an investigator you don't need much equipment to start. Hi folks, and happy New Year to you! Over the next few months we are going to look at a very important word in the Bible. That word is ‘justification’. We are familiar with the word from a legal perspective. To be justified is to be declared innocent. The Bible has such a theme. This series will develop and become a picture for us – hope you follow along. The first place to start is to say that God is ‘holy’. This means
Outlaws at Llanmihangel Llanmihangel Mill was part of St Michael’s Grange, the second largest grange owned by Margam Abbey. Initially, the grange covered an area of seven carucates, a carucate being as much land as a team of eight oxen could plough in a year and a day, estimated at 100 acres. The mill was first mentioned in a bull issued by Pope Urban III in 1186; however, the building probably precedes this date. The monks of Margam Abbey used the mill to grind corn from the nearby grange of St Michael’s and, further along the River Kenfig, they also established a fulling mill to manufacture cloth. In 1326 the fulling mill pro-

he is perfect in all his ways and without evil or sin. The Bible says there is no darkness in him. He is pure light. In terms of us and God – we are worlds apart when it comes to purity. Even the angels in heaven get totally overwhelmed with his awesome presence and continually say ‘holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty’. At this point then, we are simply pointing out that God is completely righteous, and holy, and perfect. Next month, we will start to see what this actually means for us, but also and how God has sought to bridge the gap between himself and people. NEIL HARVEY
duced an annual income of £1 while, for the same period, the corn mill generated revenue totalling 13s 4d, which suggests that the manufacture of cloth was more profitable than the grinding of corn. One of the lay brothers, Brother Meuric, was indicted in 1358 for harbouring two men at the grange, John ap Griffith and Rees ap Griffith, regarded as felons and outlaws. In his defence, Brother Meuric claimed that he had the right to be tried in an ecclesiastical court. Eventually, the Sheriff of Glamorgan agreed to this request and the men were tried, and acquitted, at Cardiff on the 26th May 1358. MANSEL JONES

Life with the Porthcawl Lions At the first meeting of the year club members reviewed the last few events of 2012 and started making firm plans for 2013. The tea party for some of the older members of the community was well attended with everyone having a very enjoyable time. Santa’s new grotto was popular in its new position with one little boy visiting all the way from Australia! The Boxing Day fun run attracted over two hundred competitors and raised a lot of money for Sandville. Porthcawl Lions would like to thank the Y Centre, Trinity Church and
the Hi-Tide for making these ventures possible. Dates, already confirmed, for your diary are 6th May for the May Fayre at All Saints Church, 1st June for a new event, a Vintage Fair, at The Rest Hotel, 6th June for Porthcawl Lions annual Golf Day at the Grove and Boxing Day for the Fun Run. There will also be car boot sales at the Rest, for which club members do the car parking, beach cleans, book sales at various venues and Santa's grotto. Knowing the fertile minds of members there will doubtless be other events, but this column will keep you updated on all dates and venues. JOHN COSSON
Save Morfa beach 1st January brought a break in the weather, and our annual 'New Year’s Walk for Morfa' took place. Around 50 walkers, including children and dogs, met at the railway gates, Longlands Lane, Margam (Footpath 92) and exercised their rights to walk to the beach. We reflected on a successful year, when our e-petition became one of the most strongly supported on the Welsh Assembly website. We proved conclusively that public opinion is on our side, and we expect the Welsh Assembly to respect this and act accordingly. The following week our first public

Great comets of 2013 A bright comet with a long tail arcing across the night sky is a rare sight and this year there is a good chance we might see not just one but two. The last truly spectacular comet was Hale-Bopp which appeared in 1997 so some would say we are now overdue for another. Comets are best described as dirty snowballs which have a rocky centre surrounded by an enormous quantity of ice. They usually reside at the edge of the solar system but sometimes get pushed towards the Sun. When

they arrive at the inner solar system the Sun's heat causes the ice to vaporise and form a tail which always points away from the Sun. In March, Comet PanSTARRS will appear low in the western sky before it swings around the Sun to appear again in the morning sky towards east. Its parabolic orbit means it will never be seen again. However, the biggest comet of the year will turn up in November and pass within one million miles of the Sun in December. This is Comet Ison which may prove to be the brightest comet in living memory. CLIVE DOWN Bridgend Astronomical Society

ation of a company's shares with its profits. The growth that we became used to during the 1980s and 1990s was to a larger degree than we thought at the time, a product of progressively cheaper money, rising house prices and ever-increasing debt. That world has, for the foreseeable future, disappeared. Today investors find themselves in a low-growth environment in which rapidly rising earnings are the exception. So the future of investing could start to look very familiar to those who were investing pre 1980 where income, not
growth, was the principal driver of returns. Over very long periods, almost all the gains from investing in the stock market can be attributed to the reinvestment of dividends and it should be noted that dividend income is a great deal more stable and predictable than economic growth, company profits and share prices. With relatively high inflation and persistently low interest rates providing diminishing returns from both cash and government bonds, investors are becoming increasingly attracted to companies able to offer a high and sustainable income to provide a real return in excess of the cost of living. The generation of a high
and sustainable income is furthermore an indication of a company's quality. It is no coincidence that some of the most attractive dividend yields are currently being paid by the bigger companies that are also most exposed to the places in the world where there is actually still some decent growth, the emerging markets. If you would like to strategise for investing for growth or indeed any other aspect of your financial planning needs, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Whilst there is a definite softening in the market, there will be no return to the free-for-all of loose lending in times to come and so many people will still find themselves not getting the mortgage they need. Indeed, I have other advisers now calling me to help

pile and send out individual reports to each of our wealth clients, reporting any proposed changes and the reasons why we are making them. Our wealth clients are just that – clients for whom we are building up wealth by managing their investments on a regular basis. The small premium you pay for that extra service is more than made up for by the enhanced return on that investment. The reports we send out explain the reasons for any changes we make in managed investments. We concentrate
on ensuring that funds are performing consistently day in day out over the long term and we only choose the best investments, avoiding any undue risk. We strongly believe in the need to review the risk a fund manager is taking with your money, because after all it is your money. We choose only the funds that perform most consistently not just those that performed well in the previous year as that can be a recipe for disaster. This robust investment process is designed to ensure that

SUSSED Bucks the Trend
SUSSED As the retail sector continues to trudge wearily through the mire of austerity and double (or even triple) dip recessions, there do appear to still be rays of hope to be gleamed from darkness. Community cooperative SUSSED Wales has just wrapped up a bumper year that saw a revival in fortunes for the Fairtrade and local goods retailer, with promising signs for the year ahead. Since moving to their new premises at 4-5 John Street, Porthcawl, they’ve continually bucked the trend, proving that tough economic conditions
don’t necessarily mean that ethical shopping should be the victim. At the AGM this Shrove Tuesday, SUSSED plans to both reflect on the previous year, whilst looking ahead to what lies in store for them and Porthcawl as a whole. As such, guest speakers Cllr (and Mayor) Alana Davies and Alun Edwards (Porthcawl Chamber of Trade) will discuss the progress of the Porthcawl Regeneration and the Severn Bays Project. As for SUSSED, another year of providing Fairtrade feasts and good-natured goods, events, street stalls await. The role of the volunteers in the success of such outfits is key, as always, and SUSSED looks forward to hopefully welcoming new help for the New Year. LUKE EVANS

Bad breath Valentine?
Apparently not everyone minds 'dog breath'. However, most people do…
Roses are red, Violets are blue, If your breath stinks, No-one’s kissing you! With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, lovers and romantics are busy planning for that special day. But one thing is almost certain to wipe the smile off your date’s face - bad breath! Many things can cause bad breath, from eating certain foods, to gum disease and digestive disorders. Fortunately a daily oral health routine can help guard against bad breath. As part of a good oral health
routine you should brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss at least once a day and chew sugar-free gum after meals. When brushing, don’t forget to clean your tongue as around 90% of bad breath is caused by bacteria on the tongue. If you’re worried about bad breath, or would like more advice on oral hygiene routines, the best person to seek out would be your dental hygienist. The hygienists work with the dentist to give care that is tailored to your needs. Their main role is to professionally clean patient’s teeth - scaling and polishing and importantly showing patients the best way to keep their teeth and gums clean at home. They also give advice on diet and preventing dental decay. So don’t be a bad breath Valentine - make a date with the hygienist today! ANN-MARIE HOWELLS BDS

How to make divorce and separation an easier experience In the New Year, family solicitors notice an increase in clients seeking advice regarding separation and divorce. The reasons for this vary, it could be that the client has experienced a difficult Christmas with their partner when the pressures of being in close contact for an extended period of time has made them realise that they no longer wish to be in the relationship. Alternatively, the parties may have been separated for some time and when the New Year comes around, the client feels that the time has come to make a fresh start and deal with the divorce or financial or children issues resulting from the breakdown of the relationship. Going to a solicitor for the first time can be a daunting experience. You will be asked to provide instructions regarding the problem and so it can help to make notes in advance of your appointment. It will also save time and expense if
you obtain full details of your financial position, for example bank statements, wage slips, pension statements and details of any debts which you have. You should also locate your marriage certificate or obtain a copy from the Register Office in the area that the marriage ceremony took place. Your solicitor will discuss the various ways of dealing with your case and will explore the possibility of mediation with you. This is a process whereby the parties meet with an independent solicitor who is also a trained mediator and attempt to reach an agreement without resorting to court. If agreement is reached, then the mediator will prepare a written summary of this. Mediation can be a positive experience in that it can result in agreement being reached in a less costly, quicker and less adversarial way. If any of the above is relevant to you, please contact us as we will be happy to deal with any queries which you have. MADELINE RAND

Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club
We were going to show a picture of the Spanish monster slug but it was too horrible. Here's a sleeping kitten instead…
The mild January has turned this month’s maybe jobs into must-do jobs. Divide snowdrops, chit early potatoes (much easier to keep chit up if you place them in old egg boxes), trim hedges and put up bird boxes – last chance before the tits start looking for a suitable residence! They will repay you with insect control later! February is a poor month for gardening, cold, dark, windy, soil still too wet to get on.
The month is named after the Roman festival of ritual purification (spring cleaning) so maintenance jobs rule. Moss starts growing on lawns before grass, so now is the time to start killing it with ferrous sulphate. Did you know about the Spanish monster slug, brought into our country on imported salad leaves (yuck!) are up to 5” long and have been found eating dead mice, dogs mess and even each other. They caused havoc in Scandinavia where feasting on road kill caused so much slime it became a road hazard! Coffee morning 2nd March, 10am-12pm in the Green Hall, come and have a natter (even about slugs). If a man alone in the garden speaks, and there is no woman to hear, is he still wrong? To Heather You danced your way into our lives, Heather, our child from heaven Laughing and loving, scattering joy We knew you had been given, A special grace in all our lives Our treasured gift from heaven And as you grew and burdens came In all you danced with grace Our loving, caring Heather, Heaven’s light upon your face Your special touch on all our lives Of joy and radiant grace
The sentiment Cursing at the wind, After scattering the ashes, Of a loved one's soul Across the sand. Go dance on the waves, Lay on the sea bed, Make love with the grains, Hand in hand.
As butterfly from womb of pain Bursts into heaven’s delight We must release you into joy And know you’re dancing still In worship now and ecstasy God’s heart of love to fill

August
Swallow your pride now, It's worthless here Nobody knows who you are, Dead amongst the sand.
I will be here waiting, Long after your time, Hold your breath, Own the land.
I still miss you so much, Your smile and gentle touch, Your warmth and loving heart. I can't believe your not here
PAULINE LEWIS Porthcawl
Living is easy when it's August and the smile of a pretty girl makes your heart sing You feel you really can believe in miracles and can conquer anything. But living is hard when it's November a heart feels desolate and days are cold. There's no warm smile or glance just regret, perhaps a missed chance. And love seems as distant as the echo of a warm August afternoon when the smile of a pretty girl steals your heart away.
The sentiment is there, Even if you are not, Don't be bitter It's as we planned.
In my heart
anymore, No goodbyes at the end of the phone, No more kisses at the end of a letter. You touched every life you met, You were loved by them all, You are missed by them all. I will always love the life you helped me mold, I will always love the life you left behind, Our memories are my treasure, In my heart forever.

Book of the month:
A WEEK IN WINTER by Maeve Binchy Maeve Binchy’s last novel is a cosy, life affirming novel set in her beloved Ireland, where people with real problems find strength to move on. Stoneybridge is full of holidaymakers in summer; but in winter it's cold, wild and isolated. Those who do come can't help but see Stone House, the big house on the cliff; once falling into disrepair is being turned into a beautiful hotel specialising in winter holidays. Its big, warm kitchen, its open log fires and its elegant bedrooms provide a welcome few can resist. Over the first few weeks a varied cast of characters appear: Henry and Nicola are

Jay Aston in the 80s
Plenty to write about, as always. It was great to have a few beers with my old chum Jay Aston. Jay, who hails from North Cornelly, found success in the USA back in the mid 80s with his band Gene Loves Jezebel which still has a large fan-base there today. Jay is
Art in Focus As an Art Tour Guide at The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff I wish to bring to your attention an exquisite masterpiece, soon to leave us, by Rembrandt van Rijn. It was created at a time when Rembrandt was producing his most prolific and best works, so come along and see it whilst you can as it is only on display till 17th February. What is so intriguing about The Portrait of Catrina Hooghsaet, painted in 1657, just a year after Rembrandt had to claim insolvency, is her face. She sits before us in her refinery appearing to gaze into a space unoccupied, where in fact her pet parakeet emerges from the darkened background as a ghostly apparition. Her dress reveals she is of a strict religious order who would have

now based in London, and said he was making a fleeting visit home before going back over the pond on a solo tour, then to Italy for some GLJ gigs. I will keep you posted on Jay’s career! And talking of stars of the 80s, they don’t come bigger than Steve Strange, whose band Visage had all those hits back then. Steve told me that Visage are releasing a new album (their first since the 80s) in March, and it’s already getting rave reviews. I’ll catch up with the great man himself in next month’s column. I missed Phil James and Rob Ash’s recent gig but will check them out soon. Happy birthday to Rob, drummer with The Guzzards and have a good un! Finally, keep the calls coming but please note my new number is 07979 971127. Cheers. STAG 07979 971127

Cantorion Coety Mixed Choir Following the Annual General Meeting, Cantorion Coety (a choir of 31 mixed voices) are presently preparing for their programme of varied Welsh music for their schedule of concerts to be held at various venues in the area during 2013. At the conclusion of the AGM, the choir was addressed by the President, Mr John Elfed Jones, Coity. He congratulated the choir on their success and efforts in completing ten concerts in 2012, and for the support and leadership of the
committee and the musical director, Mrs Eira Paskin, Bridgend. He reflected on how quickly the time had gone since the formation of the choir in September 2007, with only a handful of enthusiasts. The original intention was to sing Welsh music, whenever possible in Welsh, and to encourage a wide repertoire of both traditional and contemporary works. John Elfed Jones concluded with a quote from a Scandinavian saying that “If you love singing you will always find a song to sing”. ALUN ROBERTS JONES

The Grand Pavilion Bids Farewell to Sleeping Beauty
As 2012 came to an end it was also time to bid farewell to Sleeping Beauty at The Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl which completed its run on New Year’s Eve. Sleeping Beauty received excellent reviews from critics and audience members alike. Steve Boden, Managing Director of Imagine Theatre, says “We are really pleased with how well Sleeping Beauty has been received this year. We strongly believe in providing high quality shows at affordable prices and part of the measure of our success is how many audience members from
Feast to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight Porthcawl-based charity, Sustainable Wales, is teaming up with Bridgend College’s Seasons Restaurant to hold a Fairtrade Feast on February 28th (7pm), which will coincide with the annual celebration of Fairtrade, Fairtrade Fortnight. Sustainable Wales has challenged Seasons to create the fairest feast in town, using only Fairtrade, local and ethically-sourced ingredients. The evening will begin with a drinks reception, followed by a mouth-watering three-course meal; ending with Fairtrade chocolate. Alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages will also be available from the restaurant bar.
previous years have returned to see the show this year. “Our thanks go out to all the cast and crew who worked so hard to make the show such a special part of the festive season.” Vern Griffiths who played Nurse Nanny Nora says “I am very sad to say goodbye to the cast and crew of Sleeping Beauty as we are like one big family, but even more sad to say goodbye to some of those fantastic frocks that I got to wear! Entertaining people and making them laugh is a wonderful and rewarding way to spend the festive season and I think I speak for everyone when I say how much we have all enjoyed working on the show.” Next year The Grand Pavilion will be home to the magical fairytale of Snow White which will be running from Wednesday 11th December 2013 until Sunday 5th January 2014. For more information or to book tickets call the Grand Pavilion box office on 01656 815995 or visit the website www.grandpavilion.co.uk SERINA WILLIAMS
Seasons Restaurant is run by the students of Bridgend College under the supervision of their lecturers. Their aim is to train the next generation of chefs, using locally-sourced ingredients to create healthful meals for healthy people. Sustainable Wales’ Managing Director, Margaret Minhinnick, told us: “We’re really looking forward to working with Seasons to promote Fairtrade Fortnight. It’s great to see the college already has a policy of serving as much local produce as possible. Hopefully the Fairtrade Feast will act as an ethical exhibition for both the student chefs and attendees; encouraging a switch to Fairtrade throughout the county.” Tickets: £25. Porthcawl Runners There was a good turnout of Porthcawl Runners at the recent West Glamorgan cross country league meeting hosted by Tata Steel Margam. With at least seven members out through illness and injury the club rallied round and had nineteen runners traipsing around the Eglwys Nynydd reservoir. Conditions were ideal for once after the recent wet and windy weather and there were some great runs, most notably from Gabriella Maine who came home third in the Ladies race. Two experienced runners were making their cross country debut for the
