Appeal for Jade

Dear Editor, I am writing to you in respect of our daughter Jade Elizabeth Owen. She is one of three children and has a disease called Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. She has been wheelchair bound from the age of nine; she is now 14 years old. We are trying to raise money to be able to send her to the St Louis Children's Hospital in America. She has to fly over for three weeks and with the surgery, it is hoped that she will be able to walk after two years of

Dear John… Dear Editor, This “Dear John” letter is to urge the scribe featured in countless editions of the Seaside News not to forsake Porthcawl by laying down his pen. I am pleased to know John Jenkins and his support for Porthcawl Shout and like

occupational therapy. If she does not undergo this procedure, she will never be able to walk. Her charity is called 'Jade's Wish to Walk' and is registered with the 'Tree of Hope' which is a national charity. We are appealing for people or companies to aid us in any way possible, whether a donation, gift vouchers for auction and sponsored evenings, or in some cases we are looking for 500 plain white T-shirts. We are not a well-off family, as I have not been able to work for over six years, due to being a full-time carer for my partner and my daughter Jade. A lot of local businesses and friends are doing what they can to raise funding: sponsored walks; marathon; pamper evenings; car washing; bag-packing, etc. I myself am doing a sky-dive in October/November (weather permitting). For six years we have struggled to adapt Jade to her house surroundings. No stair lift, no bath hoist, no help from any government sponsored agencies, local council, etc. Myself and my family find that it is quite absurd that she is not entitled to any of these necessities – the answer has always been "lack of funding". At her age, she needs privacy

in order to maintain her own dignity. I am 51 years of age and have to physically carry her up and down stairs in order to meet her basic needs (toileting, bathing, feeding etc). I am not getting any younger, but I have to persevere for Jade's sake. Her mum, Jane, is also unwell and needs care also. Barclays Bank, Santander and O2 have promised to match any sum we can raise: the total amount needed is £50,000 plus flights and aftercare. Please feel free to contact us if you or your company can help in any way possible. We are at our wits end with stress and worry, but with perseverance and some kind benefactors, we hope that one day we can reach our target. Our home telephone number is 01656 710866 and our mobile is 07854 658296. Please help us, as our angel never complains about her pain or disability. She always has a smile on her face. If we can get the right backing, she can achieve her dream of walking, and playing with her friends. God bless you all, and if you cannot help, thank you for your time in reading this letter. Yours hopefully, DC OWEN (JADE'S FATHER)

harbour. For years John has campaigned passionately for BCBC to build all weather attractions in their only resort to encourage visitors. Such amenities as leisure centres, swimming pools, health and wellbeing facilities are normal elsewhere in the borough except Porthcawl. Why? BCBC are desperate to build

the Salt Lake Housing Estate with 1000 plus houses and supermarket for the Council Tax and Welsh Government targets yet fail to explain how it will revitalise and regenerate the town’s fortunes? Don’t do it John, keep the wish list for the town alive as only you can. GARY VICTOR

Snow respect Dear Editor, Hooray, we finally see some decent snow! Fantastic for us snow lovers. However after being all excited and having some fun in the snow with my kids and dog, it was only to be spoilt by chavy teenagers who obviously had great pleasure in making other peoples lives a misery. While quietly sat in my house later in the evening, I came under attack from snowballs being hit against my front door and windows. I went out and asked politely if they would stop doing this as it was winding us up and scaring my dog. To which I was given a mouthful of abuse and had snowballs thrown at me and my dog. While I was calling the police they went on to attack an elderly neighbour of mine, then attacking my son and his friends and also throwing snowballs at on-coming cars on the dual carriageway.

Fortunately, my son knew who the kids were and was able to give me names which were passed on to the police. It's a shame that instead of enjoying the snow we are left afraid to go out and protect ourselves from teenagers who have no respect for their elders or anyone. These kids obviously have no idea how their actions affect people and the seriousness of their actions. My son is a teenager but does not behave in such a way, and certainly has respect for his elders and would not dare do what these other youths were doing. It's a shame, as all teenagers get tarred with the same brush, due to the odd youths who have no respect for their community and people living here. I hope these kids, who thought it was funny, stop and think about their actions and how serious this could have been, before it is to late. SALLY DAVIES Porthcawl

Thank you

Congratulations

Dear Editor, On St David's Day last year, I was walking to get a car parking ticket at the Embassy car park in Bridgend, when I fell headlong on the pavement injuring my head, knee and ankle. As I lay on the ground, wondering what on earth I was doing there, a gentleman came to my aid. He told me his name was Daniel and that he was a medic! Immediately, I felt reassured and comforted. He told me to stay still for a few minutes and, after a while, I was helped to get into our car. (In the meantime, my husband had arrived.) I'm fully recovered now and would like to say a big thank you to Daniel for his kindness and for the advice and comfort he gave me. Another lady and a gentleman arrived at the scene, so a huge thank you to you as well. CYNTHIA JENKINS Bridgend

Dear Editor, I would like to congratulate my daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Stephen on the birth of their first child, and to say a huge thank you to them both for the honour and privilege of being his grandparents. We are so proud of this special little boy...WELCOME TO THE WORLD MAX! MR AND MRS ALVIN Porthcawl

Snow photos Dear Editor, As it was snowing last night (24th January) and I was in Nottage, I went about taking photos, and thought they could

Disabled parking Dear Editor, May I, through the letters section of Seaside News, have the opportunity to comment upon Councillor Mel Nott's article 'Leaders Life' in the February 2013 edition. Like Councillor Nott, inconsiderate parking by able bodied motorists in disabled bays and loading bays makes my blood boil as well. Fortunately, as an able bodied motorist I don't have to rely on a limited number of disabled bays, but I wish to take my agreement with Councillor Nott's comment a stage further. Councillor Nott believes that the new civil parking enforcement service is going to solve the problem. I can't comment on Bridgend, but here in Porthcawl many of us don't believe we need these modern day traffic wardens. Yes, we have a small degree of indiscriminate parking but in the main, in Porthcawl, the worst culprits of bad parking are (I'm sorry to say) the disabled. I understood that under the conditions of issue of their 'blue badges', they must park so as not to cause an obstruc-

tion or to create a hazard, but here in Porthcawl, there is a contingent of disabled motorists who park anywhere they see fit, no matter how much it may inconvenience other motorists, and especially delivery drivers, buses, etc. All this while many disabled parking bays sit empty. Maybe these bays are not in the right places for disabled motorists, I don't know, maybe that's another issue that should be looked at. But the point is, this parking enforcement service is going to cost quite a tidy sum to operate with only (as far as Porthcawl is concerned) a relatively small income in fixed penalties. My colleagues and I feel that the persons who carry out this work will hound the poor ordinary motorist by issuing as many tickets as possible to make it appear they are doing a grand job, rather than the offer of 'advice and support' Councillor Nott hopes for. Meanwhile, the poor delivery driver who has stopped on yellow lines to make his delivery because the loading/unloading bays are full of disabled badge holders, will be hounded and penalised. Higher Education Scholarship winners announced

Bridgend College is delighted to announce the winners of six Higher Education (HE) Scholarships, each worth £1000. To apply, students were asked to outline in fewer than 150 words how the scholarship would assist them in achieving their career goals over the next five years. All HE students at the College for the 2012/13 academic year were eligible to apply, with scholarships awarded to the following students: • Construction: William Roberts • Care & Childhood Studies: Kara Davies

returned with plenty of medals. Good luck in the next stage of the tournament Year 4! Some of Year 6 managed to get part of their cycling proficiency training before the snow stopped play! The programme of training will be rescheduled later next term. Check Moodle for updates. Year 6 enjoyed a technology class in Porthcawl Comprehensive as part of their transition. Nursery and Reception enjoyed celebrating Pancake Day – Blasus Blasus! (yum yum!). The Nursery also celebrated Chinese New Year and Santes Dwynwen’s Day. We would like to thank Father Craig for his link work with school and Porthcawl Comprehensive for their continuing transition work with our children. More news next month! SIAN RICHARDS

Winners demonstrated a commitment to learning, citizenship and a clear desire to act as a role model. It was clear that these scholarships can truly change the way that they apply themselves to courses, whilst easing the burden of financial strain.” The scholarships will be awarded again for the 2013/14 academic year, with details available through the Bridgend College website: www.bridgend. ac.uk JESSICA WATKINS

Spring term in St John’s School As I write this report I have just witnessed an unusual sight for the village of Newton – a group of knights in armour climbing out of one of our school minibuses! Year 1 accompanied by their teachers were returning from a successful visit to Caerphilly Castle. Recent trips and presentations in school involving other year groups that have enhanced pupils’ learning experiences have included going to the National Museum, celebrating the Chinese New Year and taking part in a Patent Office Challenge. Some older pupils have recently taken part in the UK Maths Challenge and Adi in Year 6 successfully entered the Bonus Round for this difficult challenge.

St Clare’s School

We’ve had an exciting and interesting half term at St. Clare’s, and our pupils have been making the most of our extra-curricular clubs and trips. Pupils in the Prep School have been out and about in our school minibus on trips to Hamley’s toy store, St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life and the Cogmoor Water Treatment Facility. It’s not only the Prep School who have been travelling! Our Senior School pupils recently enjoyed a trip to Paris as part of their education in Business

The School Council organised a charity day in which they raised funds for the British Heart Foundation, to support Cerys Llewelyn-Bevan, the mother of Year 11 pupil Sam, who is running in the London Marathon, and Head Boy, Will Davies who plans to climb Snowdon to raise money for Help for Heroes. The Friends of St John’s held a double event – a Valentine themed disco in the Crampton Hall and a cake-decorating workshop, run by school secretary Christina Farmer, in the school dining room. Both were well-attended and enjoyed by pupils of all ages. We are all now looking forward to our annual eisteddfod and the Highlights Concert. Studies and French. The three day trip, an annual event for members of the Sixth Form, included a day of sightseeing in Paris, a series of business studies lectures in Disneyland, and a visit to the Paris Business School. Art is also flourishing at St. Clare’s - this year we have installed a brand new Apple Mac Suite for students studying Graphic Design. Graphic Design is a creative subject predominantly looking at Design and Advertising. Our students have the opportunity to take this course in Years 10 and 12, and it concentrates on building their design skills. Our 75th Anniversary Ball is to be held on Friday 17th May - all ex-pupils are welcome – please call 01656 789966 for more information. MR JOHN AGUILAR

Porthcawl Comprehensive Our annual school show this year was Jesus Christ Superstar. Our thirty-fifth production proved to be another smash hit. Audiences gave standing ovations in tribute to our wonderfully talented pupils who gave their all both on stage and behind the scenes. Of course, none of this would be possible without the dedication, commitment and sheer hard work of all the staff involved. Well done and my thanks to everyone! We recently held a very successful Careers Convention for our Years 9-11 pupils. We are very grateful to all the exhibitors who gave up their time to

Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sger There was great excitement in school this week with the Foundation Phase children celebrating the Chinese New Year. Pupils and staff wore traditional Chinese costumes and Year 1 and 2 retold the story of the monster ‘Nian’ in the morning assembly. The children of the Foundation Phase enjoyed a day of thematic activities followed by a Chinese banquet. The highlight of the day was the ‘Dragon Dance’ with the children playing loudly on their ‘shakers’ to frighten away ‘Nian’.

advise and answer any questions pupils and parents posed. I am sure that all who attended found the event informative and that they will have gained invaluable knowledge with regards to possible future career paths. As I write, we are all looking forward to the half term holiday and the chance to recharge the batteries after an extremely demanding but rewarding autumn term. Our Open Evening for 6th Form pupils starting in September 2013 takes place in school on Wednesday 13th March at 6pm – all are welcome. Please contact the school on 01656 774100 if you require any further information.

Family Learning and Number and Play has started again in our new Family Room. The programme provides parents with quality time to work with their children and learn how to support them at home. Year 6 have been participating in anti-bullying workshops. Class Three are enjoying Forest School. At the moment it is Trekking Tuesdays, and the children wrap up warmly, put on waterproofs and explore the local woodland. A big favourite was toasting marshmallows in the fire and the hot chocolate! On Monday evenings, PCSOs Richard Couch and Richard Matthews coach the juniors

We have been busy preparing for our St David’s’ Day celebrations. On 1st March we will savour a taste of Celtic culture in the morning by welcoming dancers from the ‘Cwlwm Celtaidd’ festival to school. This will be followed in the afternoon by our ‘Eisteddfod Hwyl’. Later that evening we shall be back in school performing our Urdd pieces in an evening of Welsh ‘cawl’ and song [‘Cawl a Chân’] organised by the PTA. We would like to wish all the readers of the Seaside News a very happy St David’s Day – Diwrnod Dewi Sant Hapus i chi gyd! DELYTH NICHOLLS

in football, they will be taking our team to play against other schools in the Bridgend Schools League. Members of the Ospreys come to school every week to teach rugby skills to Years Four Five and Six, the visits are much looked forward to. We have school trips to Techniquest soon, this is a very popular event, with many interesting science projects to investigate. Recently we held a sponsorship event in aid of the NSPCC. All the children were included and performed fitness activities. The total raised will be known by next month.

Cornelly Primary is now a Fairtrade School At an all school assembly recently, Bridgend County Fairtrade Group presented Cornelly Primary with a Fairtrade rugby ball and a Fairtrade netball. This was in recognition of their achievement in becoming a Fairtrade School. Eileen McIlveen and Pete Thompson from the group told the children that the balls are made from Fairtrade rubber and that the workers who make them are paid a wage that enables them to support their families. They thanked the children and staff for their commitment to Fairtrade which helps to lift people out

of poverty and enables them to support themselves and their communities. They said that the efforts of schools like Cornelly Primary are essential in helping to grow the Fairtrade campaign in the county of Bridgend. Bridgend recently renewed its status as a Fairtrade County thanks to the efforts of volunteers from the Porthcawl and Bridgend town groups with support from BCBC, Sustainable Wales, the Cooperative store and schools across the borough. If you would like to help promote Fairtrade contact the Bridgend County Fairtrade Group at Sustainable Wales (01656 783962). PETE THOMPSON

Cynffig news The spring term is always busy at Cynffig. Just a few of the activities over the last few weeks have included an art trip to London to exhibitions displaying work by Picasso and Kandinsky. Sixth Form pupils attended a Wellbeing Conference and engaging performances and workshops on ‘Disability Hate Crime’ were delivered to Year 9 pupils by Taking Flight Theatre Company. Currently pupils are enthusiastically preparing for our annual Eisteddfod and there will be an evening concert to showcase their various talents on Wednesday 13th March at 6pm in the Main Hall. Sadly during this term we

have said a fond farewell to Mrs Susan Davies, the Headteacher. Mrs Davies was identified in our recent Estyn Inspection as an inspirational headteacher and her boundless energy and dedication to the pupils and staff of the school will be greatly missed. I finish this update by sending our congratulations to Sophie Evans( Yr 9) who represented Glamorgan Valleys during February half term in netball. Sophie will also be representing Wales in this year’s Under 16 European Championships in Gibraltar. An outstanding achievement for a talented sportsperson. HANNAH CASTLE

The general cost of living is far higher these days and families are having to budget much more carefully. It’s no different here at the council. With savings of £24m to make over the next four years, we have to ensure we spend money sensibly, so half of these savings will come from finding new ways of doing things more efficiently and collaborating wherever we can. Despite the challenges we face, we’re still committed to investing in schools and providing the best possible learning environments for our young people. For example, a new primary school will soon

Adult Learning in the Community Smoking in children’s playgrounds to be stubbed out The Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council has endorsed plans for a voluntary ban on smoking inside children’s playgrounds. In line with the Tobacco Control Action Plan for Wales (2012), a voluntary code of non-smoking is under consideration which will require people to extinguish cigarettes before entering a council-run playground anywhere in the borough. As well as protecting children from second-hand smoke, the proposal is also designed to cut down on smoking-related litter and prevent children from taking up smoking. The council is currently considering how it can work in 18 | Seaside News

partnership with neighbouring local authorities, town and community councils and organisations including ABMU Health Board to implement the plans, erect new signage and raise awareness. Councillor Phil White, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “I think there will be a lot of support for this proposal - a recent YouGov survey revealed that 79 per cent of Welsh adults already think that smoking shouldn’t be allowed inside children’s playgrounds, and Bridgend Youth Council has pledged its support for the plans. “With each discarded cigarette butt also taking 12 years to biodegrade, a smokefree voluntary code for local playgrounds will help provide cleaner, safer places for local children to play.” MICHELLE BOWER BCBC

There’s been quite a lot going on in the world of Adult Community Learning over the past few weeks. Besides all the courses and classes offered in our January brochure, there have been some exciting taster courses running under the banner of ‘A taster for a tenner’. Hopefully these will have whet your appetites, and you will be looking forward to the April brochure, offering courses running right up to July. open in Pen-y-fai and plans are well underway for a new state-of-the-art facility for Coity Primary too. We are also strengthening our adoption and safeguarding teams and investing in improved support for children with special education needs. There may be tough times ahead, but we’re doing all that we can to ensure that essential frontline services for vulnerable children are protected. Don’t forget that help is available for some people experiencing difficulties with paying council tax or rent, and we can advise on support like eligibility for free school meals. you’ve missed that, don’t forget Adult Learners Week beginning on 18th May. There will be lots going on in Bridgend town and across the borough, so why not come along and find out what we have to offer? Improvement needed on ambulance times in Bridgend One Billion Rising February 14th has long been Valentine’s Day, a helpful reminder of the value of a little special effort from time to time. But some campaigners are also using the date to highlight serious issues that relate to the way women are treated every day across the world. The One Billion Rising campaign draws attention to the fact that, on average, one in three women are beaten or raped in their lifetime – one billion people on the planet right now. 190 countries are taking part, raising money and awareness for women’s charities, often using the medium of dance. The day even saw flashmob dances in Swansea and Cardiff. In the UK the figures are

stark. One in three young girls in a relationship has suffered violence, one in sixteen rape. A third of 16-18 year olds have been touched without consent in school. A Parliamentary debate called for relationship education to be mandatory in school – 40% of students have no memory of being taught about consent. And research found even 12 year olds vulnerable to online abuse. Technological modernity must be met with cultural modernity, so that we can talk openly and supportively with our children about their right to be respected. The Welsh Labour Government need to urgently address poor ambulance response times in Bridgend after the latest statistics show that only 49% of urgent calls arrived within the target time. The Welsh Labour government's target is for 65% of emergency category A calls to receive an ambulance response time within eight minutes. Only 56.1% of calls in Bridgend received an ambulance within that time. Wales has the slowest ambulance response times in

Ultra light railway system for the area? I recently met members of the Amman Valley Railway Society who have come up with a plan for an ultra light railway, a bit like a tram, which would operate around the Swansea area. Their scheme would serve almost half a million people and provide a new transport network covering the city and its hinterland. The group say they have secured all the finance needed – £235m – from private investors so that it will not cost the taxpayer a penny. Of course, there will be plenty of people who will say that it’s

all pie in the sky and will never happen. As Shadow Welsh Transport minister I sincerely hope that their plans do come to fruition especially as there could be benefits for the Porthcawl area because they are proposing to extend the track as far as the town, thus releasing massive tourism potential. This is a gift horse, and while we do have to look in its mouth as guardians of the public interest, we should also welcome some blue sky thinking into public transport provision in South Wales. As the summer season fast approaches, Porthcawl Town Council is not the only council trying to combat dog fouling. You will be aware from a previous article that Porthcawl Town Council has committed a total of £15,000 (over two financial years) to fund extra enforcement officer hours in Porthcawl to try and deter and catch those responsible for dog fouling in Porthcawl. However, Llangynwyd Middle Community Council is trying to provoke action borough-

the whole of the UK and they have been getting worse. The Welsh Labour government cannot hide behind adverse weather conditions or unusually high sickness rates as they have done in previous winter seasons. People in Bridgend are not getting the service they deserve at critical times in their lives. One major reason for these dismal figures is the persistent failure of the Welsh Labour Ministers to establish what resources are needed to match rising demand for ambulance services. While paramedics and technical staff are striving for excellence, they are facing immense pressure and having to work with increasingly stretched resources. PETER BLACK AM

Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net www.peterblack. blogspot.com

wide on the issue and has written to all Community and Town Councils in the Bridgend Borough to meet and discuss what action can be taken collectively towards the problem. Porthcawl Town Council will be taking part in the discussion. By working together it is hoped a solution to this problem can be found. Steady progress is being made on highway safety improvements in West Road. The go-ahead has now been given to carry out installation works for a speed sign and to paint wording on West Road to encourage drivers to slow down in Nottage village. Porthcawl Town Council was disappointed to learn that the Balmoral would not be operating in Porthcawl during 2013 due to insufficient funds. However, hopefully it will return in 2014. ALISON THOMAS

Like many local people, I was really pleased that Porthcawl Civic Trust did the right thing for the town by formally withdrawing its objection to part of our harbourside regeneration works. The Welsh Government had already proposed to approve the works when the objection was made, so the potential for a long delay would have put us in a very difficult position at a critical stage. I think the objection was surprising given that the trust

sits on the town’s regeneration forum, but had not previously raised concerns about the works. However, the way in which residents made their feelings known about this, especially on social media sites, demonstrated just how much people really want to see regeneration succeed in Porthcawl. The good news is that the £3.4m Porthcawl Marina project has already generated a great deal of developer interest for future phases, and we are ready to market the retail site and Jennings building as well as tender for the highway scheme. Cadets from Kenfig Hill & Porthcawl

Kenfig Hill visits Sgt (ATC) K Gould along with Civilian Instructor C Lewis took cadets from Kenfig Hill and Porthcawl on an educational visit to eCube Solutions, based at St. Athan Aerospace Business Park, near Cardiff. eCube Solutions is a company that specialises in end of life aircraft. After an explanation of their procedures and processes the cadets were given a further opportunity to explore an aircraft that was near completion of the process. Hi folks, last month we started looking at the topic of justification and made the point that God is completely holy and perfect. This month we now need to make the point that not only is God holy but that he also demands people to be holy. Now, we know that none of us are – and God knows that too. Since the original fall of man way back in the beginning man has become sinful. If we were honest with ourselves we would have to admit that whether through thought or

action, we have all blown it in terms of being perfect and holy. So actually in ourselves we all stand guilty before God. The Bible also says that guilt/ sin separates us from God and there is a broken relationship between us and him. But there is ‘Good News’. Jesus has died to pay for the penalty of our sins so we don’t need to be judged for them. Through the death of Jesus on the cross we can know peace with God. We can be justified (declared innocent). However, this only works for those who believe. When that happens, God also changes us to be more like him. Until next time folks – God bless! NEIL HARVEY

The £800 gift of a laptop package, whiteboard and stapler was jointly funded by the Rotary Club and a matching grant from Rotary District 1150.

A gift of an external hard drive for their computer was presented to the Trinity Care and Support Group Porthcawl. Project Leader Jackie Graham (pictured above right with President Ken Roberts, Rotarians Jean Schofield and Rowena Millward) showed the group around the premises and explained just how useful the equipment would be to her. St David’s Day Today we are used to the idea of Bank Holidays, but in the 18th and 19th centuries every parish would celebrate a Gwyl Mabsant. A Mabsant was a holiday held to commemorate a local Patron Saint. The initial idea was to hold a celebration through prayer; however, this developed into a series of recreational activities. These activities encouraged betting, feasting and alcohol consumption leading to rowdiness and violence and the general disapproval of the Church. On the day of the festival events such as cockfighting, eating hot puddings and grinning matches for old women were held. Another popular event was a challenge where

young men tried to throw a ball over the church tower. A game of bando between local parishes was also organised and alcohol was often transported to Kenfig Sands, where the game was played. At Kenfig, the Gwyl Mabsant was usually held in the Guildhall in November. A harpist would entertain and dancing would continue until dawn. However, by the 19th century the Mabsant had strayed a long way from its original idea of a celebration through prayer and so the festival was increasingly discouraged. Instead, St David’s Day was promoted as a national saint’s day and that day, March 1st, remains popular with Welsh people throughout the world. MANSEL JONES

Lord of the rings Despite being the second largest planet in the solar system, Saturn is more difficult to spot than Venus, Mars or Mercury. This is because it is twice as far away from us as the much more brilliant Jupiter which can now be seen in the west after sunset. Saturn is famous for its ring system which has made a welcome return after a period of invisibility lasting several years. To find Saturn, first identify the well known asterism of the Plough or Saucepan. Draw an imaginary arc through the handle to the bright orange star Arcturus, and follow it

through to Spica which is the dazzling white star in the constellation of Virgo. Saturn is the resplendent yellowish object to the left of it. Remember, unlike the stars, planets don't twinkle. You will need good binoculars or a small telescope to see the rings which are made of ice particles and are 170,000 miles across but just one mile thick. At the last count, the planet has 62 moons. The largest is Titan which has lakes of liquid hydrocarbons hundreds of times larger than all the reserves found on Earth. We just need a pipeline 850 million miles long to solve our energy problems! Siskins belong to the finch family. Predominately yellow-green the male has a striking yellow band on the wing and a black crown; females are duller. west of Wales gardens. Siskins enjoy nyger seed, peanuts (always feed from a metal mesh feeder) and sunflower hearts. Ornamental conifers may attract them to your garden. They were first recorded feeding in gardens in Guildford during the 1960s. Their use of gardens is largely dependent on how good or bad the conifer crop; the reporting rate can vary from 10% to 40% of participating gardens. The Welsh name is Pila Gwyrdd. Destruction of Flemings-Down Iron Age Hill-Fort, near Bridgend On a visit with students from Archaeology Cymru, we were appalled to find that there is deliberate damage to the once fairly intact banks and ditches of Flemings-down early Iron Age Hill-Fort near Bridgend, dating from 300BC. Also there is extensive dumping of rubbish, and several partly decomposing intact sheep at the 'Protected Scheduled Ancient Monument'. The site was probably used as a large grain storage site, and for animal husbandry over 2,000 years ago, it was defended by a small group of caretaker guards from the local community;

We are struggling to keep a check on the natural erosion of our other coastal hillforts, but the relatively intact inland promontory hill-fort at Flemings-down is in a state of preservation that should be cherished. Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group In our January meeting, Mrs Kathleen Hierons gave us an interesting talk on her work for Parkinson’s UK. Her title is the Local Information and Support Officer. Kathleen told us, “that every day is different”. One day it may be someone, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and feels alone and frightened. Some people may require assistance to filling in forms. Other suffers may require assistance around the home, especially if they live alone or their partner, who may also be their carer, does not know how to deal with change

Porthcawl Inner Wheel Our speaker for February's meeting was Sandra Owen who told us about the Welsh children's cancer charity Latch. Sandra lost her son Emyr to cancer and knows the importance of a place to be near loved ones receiving treatment. Latch provides free accommodation to keep families together during a child's stay in hospital. Latch is purchasing a caravan

Porthcawl U3A February’s talks on local shipping incidents and on Islam were well attended and fascinating, and outings to Cardiff Castle, Jesus Christ Superstar and a Philharmnia Concert were much enjoyed – as was the Nos Lawen Meal.

in their life style. Kathleen also informed us of how the new changes in benefit system may affect some people. Although many of the questions on the new Benefit’s form are simple 'yes' or 'no' questions, they often may need further detail. Kathleen emphasised the importance of giving this detail, because Parkinson’s is different every day, effecting the balance, walking, co-ordination and tiredness. Kathleen brought to our meeting a large number of publications about the various aspects of the disease and help that is available. For further information contact 01656 783071. N CHARLESWORTH

on Trecco Bay to give families quality time with their sick child and on 5th May a variety show is planned for the Pavilion in Porthcawl to raise funds for this worthy cause. We hope it will be well supported. Porthcawl Inner Wheel are celebrating a birthday party with Porthcawl Rotary and we have a coffee morning on 13th March at the Atlantic Hotel when there will be stalls and a raffle. All are very welcome to come along and support. JANICE JONES

March offers more – a talk on 'Travels with my Camera' and one on Judaism, a Study Day at The National Museum in Cardiff and the AGM at which members can update themselves on future plans, ask questions and make suggestions to their committee. Details of all this are in the members newsletter along with the programmes of over 30 interest groups - languages and crafts, performing and listening, studying and discussing, active and receptive - there really is something for everybody. Ring Chris James for details on 01656 864742. ANDREW COLLIER

Kenfig WI The speaker for our February meeting was Helen Jones who related parts of her training and experiences with the Murder Squad in the Metropolitan Police. Having initially qualified as a teacher Helen decided on a career in the Police Force and on completion of her training moved to the murder squad where she spent twenty years. Her presentation was not only extremely informative but also enlightening with elements of humour. Members were amazed at the number of departments and the amount of work involved in a murder investigation and Helen certainly dispelled any pre-conceived ideas we may have had that a

murder inquiry involves one Detective Inspector and his 'side kick'( apologies to Morse and Lewis!) The evening was enjoyed by all. Also this month some of our members participated in a six mile walk around Cardiff bay, organised by the Federation as part of their ninety years birthday celebrations. Other events included a whist drive when our ladies gave a very creditable performance. New members are welcome to join us at our monthly meetings held on the first Monday of each month at The Methodist Church Hall, North Cornelly.

meeting closed with the members singing ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’. The January meeting was well attended despite the inclement weather. The members were given a talk by Mrs Marian Brooke a professional Porcelain Doll maker. The members were shown how the dolls were made and some completed dolls.

The December meeting of Porthcawl WI was held in All Saints Church Hall. The President Mary Tashara welcomed everyone. The guest speaker was Mrs Kath Mepham who demonstrated how to make quick Christmas nibbles. These were sampled and enjoyed by the members later in the meeting. The

Porthcawl Townswomen's Guild Opening the meeting, our chairman welcomed us all and the constitution was read by Ann Barrett. We had our monthly Mansfield report from our twin guild, after we discussed our trips and lunches we settled down to a wonderful presentation with Mr Brian Haberfield MBE. On a very grey and wet

an annuity. This is a common reason why people enter into income drawdown.

Following my article in January’s Seaside News, I received many requests for further information about income drawdown from people who were close to retirement and were disappointed with the projected income figures being offered by annuities. It is also clear that people are concerned about the lack of flexibility when it comes to the death benefits available in an annuity contract. Less than half of couples in the UK make joint retirement arrangements to ensure that, when they die, their partners will continue to receive income. The death benefits under income drawdown are generally more favourable than under

In the event of your death whilst you are in income drawdown your beneficiaries will have the following options: Taking a lump sum: Any beneficiary can inherit some or all of your remaining fund as a lump sum less a 55% tax charge (note this charge is not inheritance tax, pensions are usually held in trust outside your estate and therefore inheritance tax is not usually applied).

Continuing with income drawdown: Your spouse or any

other dependant can continue to receive your fund as income drawdown, or flexible drawdown if they already have a secure pension of £20,000. The pension pot is not usually subject to inheritance tax, but any

Converting your drawdown to an annuity: Your spouse

or any other dependant can use your remaining income drawdown fund to purchase an annuity. Again, the pension pot is not usually subject to inheritance tax, but any income taken from this annuity would be taxable on the recipient on a PAYE (Pay As You Earn) basis. If you would like further information regarding income drawdown death benefits or any other aspect of your retirement or investment planning needs please do not hesitate to call me. CHRIS ELLIS

It’s important to get the right advice to ensure that your hard-earned cash is working hard for you, right through your working life and quite literally from cradle to grave. A financial adviser can help you make the most of your money, but you need to be confident you are getting advice that is right for you and not influenced by how much your adviser can earn from the deal. The Financial Services Authority has made changes to ensure that you get the best possible advice, delivered in a straightforward manner with all the charges itemised upfront . The improvements to the way you get financial advice have been prompted by the FSA’s Retail Distribution Review

Now, instead of you paying commission on new investments, your adviser has to clearly explain how much the advice will cost. Together you will agree how you will pay for it. You may choose to pay a set fee paid up front or you may be able to agree with your adviser that they can take their fee from the sum you invest. Grandparental responsibility? People often come into the office asking about parents' or grandparents' rights. It is a common misconception that such rights exist. Parental Responsibility is a right which all mothers have, as do married fathers. There are other ways of obtaining Parental Responsibility, for example by obtaining an order of the court for Parental Responsibility or by entering into a Parental Responsibility agreement with the child's mother. Since 2003 if unmarried parents register a baby together at the Register Office, the father gains Parental Responsibility. If anyone other than a parent obtains a Residence Order, then Parental Responsibility is conveyed as part of that order. Parental Responsibility is a confusing concept and it is hard to define its meaning, but if you wanted to take a child out of the country for more than 28 days you will need the consent of anyone who has Parental Responsibility of that child. Also it will enable you to

make major decisions regarding medical treatment, schooling etc. If a father is being denied contact with his child, the court would treat any application similarly, whether or not the father has Parental Responsibility. There is a presumption that a father should have contact with his child, but unfortunately, the same presumption does not exist in respect of grandparents. A grandparent who applies to the court for a contact order in respect of his or her grandchild will need to obtain the court's permission firstly before making their application. In practice this permission is very often given. The court considers the child's welfare firstly when faced with any application regarding a child and so usually it determines that a child should maintain his or her relationship with the grandparents. If you have any queries arising from the above, then please arrange an appointment with us to discuss. MADELINE RAND

Spring usually arrives midMarch (if we’re lucky!). This month things really start to move in the growing season. It’s time to get going - preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs, harvesting the last of the parsnips (before they try and re-grow), plant summer flowering bulbs and early potatoes, busy, busy, busy! Split up polyanthus as the

flowers die trimming off the old foliage to about 2”. Plant them in a corner somewhere, they will soon re-establish and be gorgeous for planting back in the borders next autumn. Also time to plant your onion sets, preferably with a trowel, don’t just push them into the soil because as roots form they will push the set up and out again. It’s worth trimming of the dry skin at the top of the onion set as birds (bless them!) use this to pull them out. Did you know onions, apples and potatoes all have the same taste, the difference in flavour is caused by their smell, pinch your nose and try it, must warn you though you’ll taste it as soon as you let go! Gardening is a leisure time activity involving lots of time and little leisure! CHRIS EARLY earlycefn@btinternet.com

How green is your garden? Bridgend County Borough Council is hoping to boost its recycling success story in 2013 with the introduction of a new, improved garden waste collection service across the borough next month. Thanks to residents, the authority has shown huge improvements in the amount of waste it recycles since the weekly kerbside service was introduced nearly three years ago. The award-winning scheme asks householders to separate their recycling into different boxes and bags for collections and has helped move Bridgend County Borough from being one of the worst in Wales for recycling to being one of the most improved. Now, householders right across the borough have the chance to have their green waste, including plants, flowers, weeds, grass, leaves and hedge clippings collected from the kerbside too. All this material will be

taken for composting. As well as meeting growing demand, the convenient new service is aimed at reducing the amount of green waste being sent to landfill and meeting challenging targets for recycling and composting. Starting in April 2013, it will operate during the main growing season until the end of October. Householders who want to take part will be supplied with two reusable sacks for their green waste which will be collected from the kerbside fortnightly on the same day as black bags. The charge for the service is £27 per household per year. Pensioners will pay a discounted rate of £23. The new service starts on Monday 1 April but residents can pre-register NOW by calling 01656 643643. Once payment is confirmed, your new sacks and a welcome leaflet will be delivered to your door. Your first collection will take place on your first black bag collection day in April. • Find out more at www.bridgend.gov.uk

Ode to the charity bag I am not a skinflint or a miser, I am very caring, I think I put in collection boxes And I'm always 'tickled pink'.

Pictured: The Seaside News team

Mary Mary, Mary, rarely contrary, How did your garden grow? No silver bells or cockle shells But there were three little maids in a row

Ode to the Seaside News This is a poem for the Seaside News, A monthly publication that the locals will peruse To find out the Porthcawl gossip or the 'personal views' And to read those angry letters that always amuse.

Mary, Mary, so rarely contrary With grace does your garden grow With joy and love and beauty now Though just two little maids in the row

This poem, however, will be read by few, Apart from friends who'll say 'Ooh, that's you!' And perhaps the odd bored person or two; I doubt it'll receive an analytical review. To be honest, I don't really know why I'm bothering at all To compose the poem that I hopelessly scrawl. I'm sure it won't charm, entertain or enthrall, It'll just be next to another poem by Pauline Lewis of Porthcawl. So, I suppose, I'll stop before I embarrass myself more, And I'll leave you the rest of this 'mag' to explore, I've just one more line to brace yourselves for: Umm...Oh, what rhymes with for. Restore. No. Back door. Goodness, no. Tut, I can't even think of an ending line. Umm... Okay: American Civil War. There. SAM PRYCE Porthcawl

Fragile life If Life were a candle I could blow you out Or an Autumn leaf I could scrunch in my hand. If Life were like sand that ran through fingers Like an hour glass turned upside down Where Time has no patience to wait... If Life were the wind that stole our breath away Or was washed away by Sea's hungry waves No more would we be Only memories left behind. And if Life were the sunset at the end of the day When darkness falls And ghostly shadows in corners lie Then as Stars in the Universe we'll be found.

That's one every week and more. How much can we keep giving? Especially when most of us Work hard to make a living! I use my bags for storage. Or donate to my local shop But most people's go to landfill And this has got to stop.

He's leaving home

We won’t miss you anyway. The front door banged, the car door slammed And he quickly drove away. She cooked his favourite dinner, Had a hasty brush and comb. He came in the back way. “Hiya love, I’m home”.

Those wretched charity bags, That are posted through our door. For us this year just past – that numbered fifty-four!

Mary, Mary, now no more contrary So sweet does your garden grow For the Gardener has come to tend it with care And root those weeds that were lurking there Planting his own seeds of wisdom and love Watering with grace from his kingdom above And a silver bell rings all is well For those little maids all in a row

He threw his key on the worktop That’s it he said - “I’m gone I don’t care much for this marriage lark And true love’s just a con.” “That’s fine” she said, “sod off”

I buy raffle tickets, I wear my poppy with pride I love my 'host' of daffodils But there's one thing I can't abide.

Book of the month:

THE BLACK BOX by Michael Conelley For 20 years Connelly's creation Harry Bosch has been fighting crime in LA and Cornelly is marking the anniversary with this taut and clever thriller in which Harry finds the past coming back to haunt him. In May 1992, Los Angeles was ablaze with looting and rioting after the murder of Rodney King. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. Escorted by National Guard soldiers from murder scene to murder scene, Harry and his colleagues are only able to do the bare minimum in terms of collecting evidence. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice. Then twenty years later, Harry finds himself working in the Open Unsolved Unit

Stag’s world of rock The phone has been red hot after last month’s article on Stag Marks Jay Aston’s 'Gene Loves Jezebel'. It seems Jay still has a large fan base so I will keep you informed of his movements. 'The Guzzards' new drummer is Nigel Cooke, or 'The Captain' as he is now known. Nigel runs the 'Manic Studios' in Bridgend and I look forward to seeing him live! And still in Bridgend, 'Bullet For My Valentine' has a new album out called 'Temper Temper'. 'Ghosts of Glamorgan', the

first episode in the 'Tales of a Supernatural Nature' series, is now released on DVD. Go to 'Ghosts of Glamorgan' or Downwood Films on Youtube and check out the trailer, and there’s an interview with yours truly about my cameo role in it. Leave a comment, too, about what you think! (But no bad language, please). Just hope the premiere’s not in New York, I don’t have the bus fare! If you want to know whether I come to a sticky end, you’ll just have to buy the DVD! Don’t miss Porthcawl Soul Club on 23rd March at the Grand Pavilion with top DJ Nigel Graham and gang. I promise to track down Steve Strange for next month. Keep the news coming. STAG 07979 971127

Art in Focus The National Museum of Wales focuses this month on Vincent van Gogh’s (18531890) Rain, Auvers, painted just a few days before his death. In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent refers to this painting as one of three large canvases: ‘They’re immense stretches of wheatfields under turbulent skies’. The other two are displayed at The National Gallery in London and The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, so we are amongst fine company here. This painting also shares wall space with other famous Impressionists and Post-Impressionists making it the best collection of its kind outside of Paris. This would not have been

possible without the generosity of two sisters: Gwendoline and Margaret Davies. These two ladies completely transformed the cultural legacy in Wales by bequeathing this amazing collection to the nation. Furthermore, it was Rain, Auvers that introduced van Gogh’s genius to the British public in 1910, when it was part of a pioneering exhibition: Manet and the Post Impressionists. With its energetic visceral painterly effects, in soft yellows, delicate blues and calm greens, Rain, Auvers confounds the idea that Vincent was about to commit suicide. This wonderful musical vividly brings to life Dickens’ timeless characters with its ever-popular story of the boy who asked for more and PAODS are proud to stage this ever-popular show at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl from Thursday 25th – Saturday 27th April at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Rehearsals are now well underway with the childrens’ chorus itself containing a multitude of local talent many of whom have already made many appearances on the Pavilion stage. Phil Rixon’s 2013 Charity Show – Queen Again This year’s show is again at the Grand Pavilion, and takes place on Saturday 4th May, which is Mayday weekend. Following their tremendous success at last year’s show, and by public demand, the headline act will again be local Queen Tribute band, Night At The Opera, featuring Paul Chappell as Freddie Mercury, Dave on base guitar, Stewart on keyboard, Craig on drums and Paul Greham on lead guitar. Supporting them this year will be top local DJ Robbie Owen. The theatre layout will be cabaret seating of tables of ten downstairs, with room for

dancing, and seating in the balcony. The chosen charity this year is LATCH, the South Wales based charity for children diagnosed with leukaemia and cancer, founded in 1982. The charity has many connections with Porthcawl. Please book early, as already, nearly half of the tables have been reserved. Tickets on sale from 1st March, and are the same as last year, £15 each downstairs, and £13 in the balcony. Phil thanks the acts for their help, manager Mark Phillips and staff at the Pavilion, and the Public for their continued support of his charity shows. PHIL RIXON

On Saturday 29th June 2013 at Porthcawl Grand Pavilion starting at 8pm there will be another Dance Sounds of The Sixties fundraiser event in aid of Velindre Cancer Centre. Dress to Impress in the Style of the Sixties is once again the theme, as all you who supported last year's event will know. Tickets are £6 and will be available nearer the time from The Grand Pavilion Box Office. Last year £1,673 was donated to Velindre Cancer Centre and we would really like to beat this amount this year so we need your support. So put this date in you diary and get your outfit and dancing shoes ready for another great night! KEVIN MCCARTHY

To all mums that are pregnant or breastfeeding…

Thank you for coming to PIPS, YMCA in 2013. It is reassuring! We have a few mum’s stories relating to why breastfeeding is a lovely way to feed your baby. • It helped a mum bond with her baby, as this concerned her during pregnancy. She loves the group, making new friends and keen to become

Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club presentations

Club Captain, Lady Champion, Ladies Vice Captain 2012

In the depths of winter, when golf is in short supply, Presentation Night is an opportunity to come together and celebrate. Introductions were by Simon Hopkin, presentations by Club Captain Barrie Edwards and Ladies’ Captain Alison Evans. The achievements of the Juniors were recognised on the night and the Coates Merit Shield for his contribution to their success was made to Ian Booth. No one, except Ian himself, was surprised at this prestigious award.

Porthcawl surf report As winter 2012-13 comes to a partially-welcome end, there is something it will be remembered fondly for: the waves. That same superstorm that sent the feted 100-ft wave to Portugal did two massive favours for local surfers. Firstly, it gave us one of the most incredible swells we've seen in years - four days of huge,

A new Club Champion, Carwyn Hammond, was crowned. The achievements of the Ladies’ Club Champion were read out and young Ella Griffiths is obviously going places in the golfing world. The Tom Furneaux received his prize as Junior Champion. The convivial atmosphere of the night was enhanced by the singer Christine Black who sang as winners' cups were filled with champagne and cocktails. Members appreciate that in spite of the weather, the course was always open due to its free-draining nature. Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club welcomes all golfers. Kickboxing results from the ICO English Championships

This was Jordan Williams (15 years old from the Scorpions Kickboxing club Bridgend) first competition after his success in the ICO Kickboxing World Championships in Paris at the end of last year, where he won a silver medal. Jordan has only been kickboxing for 13 months. Jordan competed in the ICO English Kickboxing Open Championships in Birmingham

lined up peaks across all of Porthcawl's west-facing spots, as well as a stiff offshore wind that groomed the waves in to perfect barrels. Secondly, the system dumped over a foot of snow on the rest of South Wales, keeping lineups relatively empty and in some cases affording keen surfers an excuse to (reluctantly, of course) stay home from work! That said, some of the evening sessions turned out to be the best of the lot. Math Hapgood was

able to celebrate the birth of his new baby daughter Bobbie with a couple of sunset barrels. Only a few month old, that kid has already witnessed one of the best spells of surf in recent memory! Meanwhile, a ripping George Schofield got to warm up for his trip to Western Oz in conditions he'll be hard pushed to find anywhere else. After that a thumping storm pushed through, offering some excellent days along the eastern breaks, before another week of epic, clean conditions preceded the eventual breakthrough of some milder weather. This second swell of the month coincided with huge spring tides, allowing some of the rarest spots around Porthcawl to fire, for those keen enough to forego the usual places to surf. A crew including Greg Owen, Martin John (who’s been putting some really stylish combos together on his longboard), Chris Seage and Ezra Hames made an as-

recently, where he competed in two competitions, Boys Junior 13–17 year old 60–65kg class continuous and points. In the continuous competition first he fought in three fights against some very accomplished competitors. Jordan fought with poise and composure, he controlled the fights from start to finish never letting his opponents a chance to get the upper hand. Jordan won gold, becoming English Champion in his class. The referee congratulated both fighters on the extremely high standard of the fight. Jordan then had to immediately leave the ring and step on the mat for his points fight, and he ended up with silver outstanding, considering what he had just done. We are still looking for sponsorship so if any company would like to sponsor Jordan please contact us on 07887 565922 or e-mail us on ziggycfor@yahoo.co.uk MARK WILLIAMS

sault on one sketchy low-tide drainer, while Brad Hockeridge, Steve Childs and Gary Lewis all locked in to some ferociously hollow tubes just around the corner. All of the above in mind, it has been extremely cold – despite water temps having stayed unusually high for most of the winter. A relatively balmy ten degrees did eventually drop to eight just as we were all starting to think we’d gotten away with it. The simple formula of wet and windy = warmer, while clear and dry = cold has been in force. Any day now though, that goes in to reverse. Surfers will keep watching these patterns with interest and mixed emotions. We’re all missing the warmer weather, but let’s hope there are a few more of those grinding swells to come too! See you in the water. TOM ANDERSON www.tomandersonbooks.com

Charity achieves goal The Chloe Bigmore Trust charity goal has just tipped over £41,000 thanks to local supermarket Co-operative food store in Lias Road Porth-

cawl, after being chosen as the preferred charity from a shortlist by the customers and staff of the store. The charity which aims to purchase a holiday home for the use of seriously or terminally ill children has been delighted

The recent bad weather made it difficult for some members to fit in their scheduled runs for the 2013 Virgin London marathon. Some took to using the promenade and the new footpath to Rest Bay to fit in a sixteen mile run on a weekend that

by the fantastic support it continues to receive from many local people. During November and December the staff participated in many events including a 24 hour sponsored walk, a cake stall day, a sponsored swim and a Christmas raffle plus the store donated food and drink to the charities own run The Drovers Run, with many of the staff either running or supporting the event.

saw many roads and pavements covered in snow. These long runs are most important for the endurance event and the rewards for the commitment shown during the awful January weather will soon be evident come spring. There are two remaining fixtures left in the 2012/13 West Glamorgan X/C league and it looks increasingly difficult for the Men’s Senior team to hold on to their current Division One status. They currently lie second from bottom on eight points, two points adrift from Tata Steel. A good result at the next fixture on Sunday 24th February will take it down to the wire for the last remaining race in early March. The Men’s Veteran team should hold on to their status in Division Two after a good performance at Margam. The Ladies team look safe in Division One and currently lie in third place showing the consistency needed to survive in the higher division. ANTONY PHILLIPS

The Co-operative manager Chris Evans was pleased to be able to donate £2,148.18 to the charity and the Drovers Run raised a further £1340.05. The photograph shows staff member Glen handing over the cheque to Paul Bigmore trustee to the charity. Glen was one of the staff who undertook a gruelling 24 hour sponsored walk with two other young members Rebecca and Kevin. PAUL BIGMORE
