PORTHCAWL CAR PARKS

DEVELOPMENT OF SALT LAKE

Dear Editor, With regard to the controversy regarding BCBC’s intended regeneration plans for Porthcawl to close two of the three car parks in the centre of town - can you imagine any other council in Britain closing their two main busy car parks? Especially in the case of Porthcawl which is a very busy, popular seaside resort where the traffic into the town increases tenfold on sunny days and increases by five to ten per cent every year. If this volume of increased traffic continued by 2030 we would need an extra new car park in addition to the ones we already have. The closure and sale of the land by BCBC would probably to the average person indicate a case of greed, incompetence and stupidity - which is unbelievable in its conception. The most serious aspect is that motorists would be unable to park in the centre of the town resulting in a dramatic loss of trade and the closure of many shops. Car parking is already a problem with cars parked along the seafront and in adjoining streets. Further risk would be caused by BCBC’s proposal to build 950 properties on Salt Lake which would result in the cars owned by the occupants adding a further 950 cars minimum to the centre of town. The land of these two car parks belongs to Porthcawl (prior to 1974) and as highlighted, BCBC’s regeneration plans for Porthcawl are a disaster resulting in two main car parks being lost forever. Does this also indicate that BCBC is continually making false promises to make Porthcawl a premier seaside resort? In order to prevent the closure of these two car parks it is up to the Porthcawl people to fight and take action now. John Jenkins

Dear Editor, Regarding Mr Jenkins and Mr Webb’s letters about the development of Salt Lake. I am sorry but your words are falling on deaf ears. Most probably the Council have already plans in progress to turn it into a Housing Estate. I have lived in Porthcawl for the last 50 years and it has always reminded me of the cowboy films you see on TV. The local Sheriff and Deputy run the town, but I am afraid Mr Jenkins and Mr Webb - we don’t have a John Wayne or a Gary Cooper living in Porthcawl wanting to fight for our town. Wake up Porthcawl residents have your say in the Seaside News! W. Williams, Porthcawl

CARS ON JOHN STREET Dear Editor, Here is a photo of the most abused sign to be found in South Wales. What is the point of a pedestrianised thoroughfare if it’s streaming with cars that have no right to be there? T. Emlyn-Jones, Porthcawl

Letters PORTHCAWL CIVIC TRUST SOCIETY

CONTRASTING VIEWS

Dear Editor, The Porthcawl Civic Trust Society fully supports those residents who have written to your publication regarding the future of Porthcawl. The Society is concerned that the town will never be recognised as a ‘premier seaside resort’ as envisaged by BCBC until the visual quality of Hillsboro and Salt Lake car parks are significantly improved. BCBC’s latest proposals are still awaited but the fear is that, once again, BCBC will ignore the wishes of residents and plough on with its original plan to urbanise Salt Lake. The Society is in no doubt that the majority of residents would prefer Salt Lake to be converted into an attractive open space for use by both residents and visitors to the town, although with part of the area left for much needed car parking. If our concerns prove to be correct, then we can only urge BCBC to consult all Porthcawl residents and call a town meeting before any final decision is made. If you would like to support the Society, visit our website: porthcawlcivictrustsociety.co.uk to download a membership application form. Membership costs only £6 a year (£8 for a family). The bigger our membership, the louder our voice. Don Tickner, Porthcawl

BOOK OF THE MONTH Takedown by Stephen Leather When a British Special Forces soldier goes rogue, carrying out an attack at a US army base in Syria leading to the death of two men, ex-MI5 controller Charlotte Button is hired to work out what his plan is and to take him down before he can carry it out. Charlotte puts her best man on the case - hitman Lex Harper. It’s up to Lex to assemble a crack team and get to the soldier before he carries out what could be a massive terrorist attack. But Charlotte might require Lex’s help with a more personal problem too . . . While it’s down to Lex to prevent a potential terrorist attack on British soil, Charlotte must work out who is after her and what they want

At the 60th Commemorative Anniversary, Ross Martin, Porthcawl RNLI, presented a relative from Redcar, with chainlinks from the wreck of the Samtampa, mounted on a frame. On receiving it, she tearfully responded, “The links will never be broken.” A sentiment that has endured; and will continue to echo down the years. ‘A Maritime Exhibition’, including a 70th Commemorative Display of the Tragedy, will open on 1st April 2017, at the Museum. FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS Wednesday 23rd April 1947 will forever link Porthcawl, the North East of England and Mumbles. Having attempted to combat a 70 mile per hour gale and finding that the ships cables were no match for the storm, the wireless message sent from the SS ‘Samtampa’, as it hit Sker Point, read, “Breaking up. Leaving shortly.” Tragically, no one would leave alive. The 39 seamen onboard perished. Having picked up an SOS, the Mumbles lifeboat crew set out. The following morning the ‘Prince of Wales’ Lifeboat was found upturned near the wreck of the Samtampa. The crew of eight had drowned, bringing the death toll to 47 men. Local people, bravely, attempted to recover the bodies; many

SCHOOLS PENCOED COMPREHENSIVE

Year 7 Pencoed pupils took part in the final of their Enterprise Challenge recently as part of their iLearn lessons. There were some excellent examples of St Fagan’s board games that were pitched to the panel of ‘dragons’. The standard of work was exceptionally high and the ‘dragons’ found it very difficult to pick a winner. However, the winning team was announced as ‘Unicorns and Spectacles’, who created the St Fagan’s Fiasco board game and an excellent advert to support their pitch. The runners up were M M & L who created St Fagan’s Monopoly. All winners were presented with prizes kindly provided by Staedtler UK Ltd and were given excellent business advice from the role models at Big Ideas Wales. Well done year 7! Anthea Powis-Pugh

AFON Y FELIN NEWS What a wonderful start to the new year! For the second year we are judged to be a YELLOW school in the National School Categorisation System, this means we have proved to be an effective school with good learner outcomes. We all dressed in red, white and green to celebrate and raise awareness that the Eisteddfod is this year taking place in Bridgend County. We participated in E-Safety Day, with Mr. Hughes delivering presentations to staff, governors, parents and the children on this very important issue of keeping our children safe online. There were some very excited Year Six pupils, who visited Harry Potter World as part of this term’s theme Spellbound. Thank you to the Community Council for making this possible. Year Two also had great fun in Techniquest, always a popular field trip! P.C. Beaumont has visited the school with Anti-Social Behaviour and Internet Safety topics. The school is raising funds by collecting any broken or unwanted watches, jewellery, phones, cameras, stamps and old foreign currency, notes and coins. Please help if you or your friends and families have any of these items, the children always benefit from any raised funds. AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor

CORNELLY PRIMARY SCHOOL

This month we have been finding out more about Welsh Water’s £300,000 investment project to improve the bathing water quality in Porthcawl and to protect properties in the area from flooding. Welsh Water’s Education Officer, Mary Watkins, visited us to explain about the work and the important role the sewer network plays in cleaning the waste water from homes and businesses in the area before safely returning it to our rivers and seas. To help us really understand how the water company takes away and cleans the waste water from our homes, we took part in an interactive workshop and assembly where we learnt about the water treatment process. The pupils also learnt how they could personally help to reduce the risk of flooding and pollution from the sewer network by not putting things like cotton buds and disposable wipes down the toilet. During the visit we also found out that we had won the Dwr Cymru Toothbrush Challenge. Last year we took part in this and saved lots of water by turning off the tap whilst brushing our teeth. Part of our prize was a water butt for the school meaning we will save even more water! Andrew Wood Head Teacher Seaside News | 16

We were all tremendously excited and grateful to have a visit from the actor and writer Ruth Jones. Her engagement with the children was fantastic and her advice on writing has inspired children to enter the BBC’s 500 Words competition. ‘Wizard’ writing too from our Year 6 children after a visit to the Harry Potter Studios as part of their comprehensive school transition work. They had a magical day, thanks to the Community Council who helped towards the cost. Year 5 children have also been developing their literacy, numeracy and physical skills through a Swansea City Football Club initiative following a special visit from the club’s Ambassador Lee Trundle. Improving presentation of writing is also important and prizes were awarded during our Presentation Week. Awards too for Year 2 children who assisted by parent volunteers completed the Kerbcraft road safety training. Parents enjoyed the class assemblies and the Chinese New Year was celebrated with class activities and culminated in a superb Dragon Dance parade. We are pleased to say that from next September, we will be extending our nursery provision to take children known as ‘Rising 3’s’ and look forward to hearing from anyone interested in their child joining us. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

In December, a group of 43 Year 12 students attended the launch of the Seren Network for Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot and Powys at Llandarcy Academy of Sport. The Network is an initiative by the Welsh Government aimed at supporting Wales’ brightest students in their applications to the UK’s leading universities. Students were selected on the basis of their excellent GCSE results, and Porthcawl’s cohort of 43 was by far the largest attending – a testament to the outstanding achievement of our pupils. We look forward to the next stage where the Seren Hub provides opportunities for challenging subject-based workshops, meeting like-minded students from other schools, advice on university applications and links with leading universities. Porthcawl Comprehensive already has an exceptionally high number of students who receive offers from Oxford, Cambridge and the other ‘Russell Group’ universities: of last year’s 115 UCAS applicants, 26% took up these places. The magic of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ lives on in the community as pupils participate in the St David’s Day concert at the Grand Pavilion on 1st March, singing songs from the show. They will perform these again at the AGM of the U3A on 24th March, and are thrilled to have the opportunity to sing their favourites again! Andrew Slade Head Teacher

YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR NEWS It has been a very busy start to the year. Younger pupils enjoyed a guided historical walk around our local area with Mr John Mason and also celebrated Chinese New Year with some delicious food. Whole school celebrations included a Cariad@yrUrdd day with everyone dressed in Urdd colours of Red, White or Green and a Healthy Eating Day, where we learned more about the importance of a balanced diet. Congratulations to Gethin Lewis and Megan Lewis on excellent performances at the Urdd National Swimming Gala and Urdd Regional Gymnastics Competition respectively and to our rugby squad on reaching the quarter finals of the Urdd Regional Rugby Tournament. Liam of Cardiff City led literacy workshops with Years 5 & 6 and pupils visited the Stadium as an end of term treat. Preparations for the Urdd Eisteddfod are well underway and the choir have performed at various events to raise funds towards this year’s Urdd National Eisteddfod, to be held in Bridgend in May. SCHOOLS ST CLARE’S SCHOOL NEWS

Pupils and staff at St Clare’s School in Newton, Porthcawl were horrified to find crime scene tape everywhere as they arrived. There was a dead body near the dining hall, one on the rugby pitch and even a skeleton in Gardening Club’s polytunnel! But it all turned out to be the handiwork of Jon Williams from Crime Solvers who’d set up the crime scenes early that morning. A real life Senior Investigator, Jon guided St Clare’s team of Trainee Investigators through the maze of a criminal investigation. Dressed in protective CSI suits and masks, the Y6 and Y7 boys and girls were split into 3 teams of CSI Miami, Vegas and New York before Jon took them a crime investigation ‘field trip’ within the school grounds which are close to Newton Beach. The budding CSIs had a really great day following the evidence and solving the crime. Congratulations to Rupert Davies in Y7 who actually solved the crime before lunchtime! What a super sleuth! And if you missed our Open Morning on 10th March, why not book a private tour instead? Contact our Registrar, Holly Fowlkes on (01656) 789966 or visit our website www.stclares-school. co.uk now! PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL Year 6 visited Warner Brother Studios in London on Thursday 9th February as part of their Harry Potter ‘Spellbound’ transition project for Cynffig Comprehensive School. They were joined on the day by the four other primary schools in the Cynffig Cluster. Everyone had an early morning to arrive for our tour of the studios at lunchtime. The pupils were able to take in all of the sights, scenes, props, costumes and CGI effects, which make the Harry Potter films so real. The children will be putting what they saw into practice and working on lots of literacy tasks in the coming weeks. Many thanks to the Pyle and Kenfig Hill Community Council for their kind donation towards the transport costs it was greatly appreciated by the children and accompanying staff. Pupils celebrated the theme of ‘Be the Change: Unite for a better internet’ during Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 7th February. They took part in activities that promoted using photographs and videos safely online. Throughout the day pupils took part in a quiz, created emojis, posters, pictures and videos sharing the important message of internet safety. N Pryce Head Teacher

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

It has been a very exciting term in Newton Primary School for the pupils in year 6. As part of our Cornerstones topic ‘Mods & Rockers’, we have studied the life and times of the 1960’s. We hired a specialist DJ and travelled back in time to a very enjoyable 60’s themed disco. All the pupils and staff dressed up and danced to the swinging sounds of the era. Pupils looked at the impact of ‘The Beatles’ on popular music and

SCHOOLS culture, writing biographies of famous people from the 1960’s. We involved the community by asking family members to come in and share their experiences of the 1960’s. We were fortunate enough to also be visited by a number of local ‘mods’ who brought in their customized Lambretta Scooters for our pupils to see. Towards the end of the Spring Term topic, we focused on the American moon landing in 1969. Each group used iMovie to film a documentary to explain the significance of the event. Our pupils played the parts of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and other scientific experts during the filming. We really enjoyed the transition events this term and the food technology morning was well received. The children loved the PCS production of ‘The Little Shop Of Horrors’ at the Pavilion during the schools transition performance. The events just seem to get better every year. Year 4 have been exploring the personalities and characteristics of The Spider and the Fly by Mary Hewitt, a Victorian poet. They are creating circuits and focusing on light bulbs. Year 5 have been studying the Victorians and held a Victorian school day which was great fun. Pupils planned and taught lessons. The boys have been to the woodland with author Michael Harvey and are beginning to develop stories, while the girls created rainforest models. Year 5/6 have been to see The Little Shop of Horrors performed by Porthcawl Comprehensive School, and Year 6 have been focusing on Dr Barnardo’s first invention, the telephone. POEMS BELFRIES BELLS NAMED GRACE & CLAUDE - THEIR STORY

Resident belfry bells Grace and Claude’s remit covered proudly all services where bells required. Apart from training bell ringers nights! As both suffered savage bell brutality and left giddy and tired. On this night a bolt came loose on Grace, she hurdled down and landed bell end down on the ringer’s head. Parishioners rushed to his aid, “He’s a dead ringer”, one announced, “Um but was he really dead.” The cost of his funeral or a new church boiler oh what a choice? We’ll bury him under the flagstone where he fell, no cost to us, and we pledge not to tell. Late that night Claude heard Grace ringing from under the flagstone, “Joy my Grace is alive though still stuck on the ringer’s head! Could it be she is not dead, yes my Grace rung when he awoke and shook his head.” The parishioners heard this ringing and sheepishly rushed to the church, lifted the flagstone quickly and a tad guiltily. The ringer sat up and said with still Grace on his head, “Saved by the bell. How did I get under this flagstone?” “Well perhaps we were a bit hasty!” Claude was ecstatically relieved that they were reunited, re-bolted in the belfry again. Both ringing in harmony , even in the leaky roof rain. Though the ringer still suffers with ringing in his ears. The parishioners now ecstatic that a new boiler was purchased well choice of new boiler or cost of ringer’s funeral so under the slab he went. And for good Grace he’s not dead, he shook his head and was saved by the bell! This rings true and ends this mystical event. This was the story of church bells named Grace and Claude, and if you read in the Seaside News I suggest applause, and don’t give us a bell, as Grace is back and ringing well, just call in and give us a ring! And look us up, and we’ll give you a ring. Alun Davies, Porthcawl

THE RAPPING DAFFODIL I’m a Daffodil Tall and strong And all round Wales I’ll sing my song

With my vibrant colour And my dazzling smile At last it’s spring! And I’ll stay awhile I’m a symbol Of this country great Of my lovely sight I will your soul elate! Yellow valleys... and yellow hills It’s Spring! And Wales is full of daffodils. Patrice Schmidt, Porthcawl

OUR WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL Our world is beautiful because of the amazing animals helping their families all the time. Our world is beautiful because of the amazing countries, sunny or raining, they are beautiful in their own way. Our world is beautiful because of the amazing views and mountains that can turn your frown upside down. Our world is beautiful because of the greenery and our forests which brighten up our life. Our world is beautiful because of all the kind people who care for us. Our world is beautiful because of our friends who are there for us when we need them the most. Our world is beautiful because of our sports and competitions where people can feel amazing after competing. Our world is beautiful because of the sunsets that look as pretty as pretty can get. Our world is beautiful because of the smiles on our faces that brighten the world up. Our world is beautiful because of the castles that we can explore. Our world is beautiful because everybody loves their parents and their family helping them learn. Our world is beautiful because of the wonderful jobs that we can have. Our world is beautiful because of our teachers who love to see us succeed in school. Our world is beautiful because of the food that is grown and the drinks that are made. Our world is beautiful because of sharing and caring for other people. Our world is beautiful because of us; we make the world a better place.

We live in a beautiful place because of workers who build our houses, repair our roads so it is safe. Our world is a lovely place because of the seasons and the holidays, such as Christmas, Easter and Halloween, and even the days off school. These make us happy in many ways. We love our world because it is beautiful, sometimes we forget what a wonderful place it can actually be. Our world is beautiful because of the history about how a wonderful place it was. Our world is beautiful because of the grass and the sky that sets the scenery. Our world is beautiful because there are so many places you can explore and you can see the world properly. We love our world because of all the nice things that we can do like help other people who are not as fortunate. We love our world because we meet amazing people and we enjoy every moment of it. Our world is beautiful because everybody makes each other laugh and guide younger people to become anything they want to be. Libby Roach (Nottage Primary School)

LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER ROUND OF SENIOR OPEN GOLF I’m really excited about the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex returning to Royal Porthcawl Golf Club this July. In 2014, we were extremely proud that the first major golf tournament ever to be played in Wales was hosted right here in Bridgend County Borough, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to our corner of the golfing world again this summer. Three years ago, players praised the excellent conditions at the course, and bumper crowds enjoyed four days of entertaining links golf. More than 43,000 spectators lined the fairways and local volunteers, residents and businesses really got behind the championship. Hosting such a prestigious event is fantastic for local tourism, with the international media coverage showcasing Porthcawl to a global audience. The Senior Open will feature an amazing line-up of former major champions and Ryder Cup stars including Tom Watson, Paul Broadhurst, Ian Woosnam, Colin Montgomerie, Miguel Angel Jiminez, and Bernhard Langer, who certainly took a shine to Royal Porthcawl when he won by a record 13 shots in 2014. The Senior Open takes place from July 27 – 30. Tickets are now on sale and hospitality packages are also available. Find out more at www.senioropenchampionship.com or call 0800 023 2557. OFFICIAL OPENING OF NEW CHARITY CONFIDENCE THROUGH LEARNING (CTL) Two months ago, I was very pleased to visit and officially open ‘Confidence Through Learning,’ a new charity based in Bridgend, that aims to build confidence by encouraging learning and promoting the advantages of learning. The charity welcomes learners from all backgrounds, from 11 years old to 80 years old, no matter the circumstances or personal barriers. The charity will be supported by partners, Tyfu Training Ltd and Synergy Achievements. There are many factors that can contribute towards a person’s disengagement. The charity offers a full diagnostic service, coaching and guidance to help learners discover who they are and what individual plans they need to make their lives a success. By providing learning packages tailored to the individual learner, the charity believes it can help people to have the confidence to believe they can succeed and to make more positive life choices. CTL will pass on the enthusiasm for learning and support and guide people in their individual learning journeys. Indeed, by equipping people with the right tools to aim higher in life, people will then feel part of the community and not socially excluded from society. Carwyn Jones AM Welsh Labour Leader

News INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY International Women’s Day arrives on 5th March, celebrating the indomitable essence of women’s economic, political and social achievements across the globe. Its roots go back to the early 19th century when inequality and oppression was encouraging women to become more active and speak out – the ‘suffragists’. The challenge to secure women’s right to vote, hold public office and equal employment rights as men, was difficult. Most suffragettes used peaceful methods of lobbying, others, blew up post-boxes, threw stone imprisoned, force fed and died. All fighting for the same rights as men – to vote. In May 1917, the Representation of People Bill allowed 8.4 million women, who were married, property owners or graduates who were over 30 the right to vote. It also enfranchised one million men over 21 who had previously not had voting rights. The rights for women acted as a cloak to hide the extension of voting to working class men who had fought in the war. Women’s rights have made great progress in the last 100 years, but more is to be made. It is important for women to continue to fight for equality and exercise their rights to vote in all elections in the future. Madeleine Moon MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

A RECYCLING REVOLUTION IS ON ITS WAY More details have been revealed about the new recycling and waste collection system that is set to begin in Bridgend County Borough. The current kerbside scheme recycles 58 per cent of all household waste, but by 2024-25, councils will need to hit a new 70 per cent target or face costly penalties from the Welsh Government. That’s why a series of changes will begin in June aimed at making Bridgend County Borough one of the most recyclingfriendly places to live in Wales. Local households will soon receive new recycling equipment as well as full instructions on how to take part. Research has found that half of all waste placed inside a black bag could have been recycled, so a two bag limit is being introduced along with a separate collection for nappies and absorbent waste. But there is no limit on how much recycling can put out, and you can order additional recycling containers if necessary. There will also be additional bags for larger households or homes where an ash-producing fire is the main source of heat, assisted collections and more. You can find further details on the new system and information about how we will be helping householders to use it at www.bridgend.gov.uk Councillor Huw David Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

SIGN UP NOW FOR GARDEN WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE The green waste collection service is returning this spring and gardeners are being invited to sign up now. And with the fortnightly service extended an extra month from April until November, it will be even more convenient for local households to recycle green waste such as plants, flowers, weeds, grass, leaves and hedge clippings. Residents can sign up to the service for a one-off payment of £27 per household with a discounted rate of £23 for pensioners. Households receive two reusable sacks for their green waste which will be collected every fortnight. Just over 2,800 homes signed up for the scheme last year, which was 400 more than in 2015. The collected green waste is converted into a compost fertilizer so it can be reused and reduce the amount of waste that is disposed of as landfill. With the first garden waste collections set to begin on Monday 3 April, you can register for the scheme by calling 01656 643643. Garden waste can also be taken to the household recycling centres in Tythegston, Brynmenyn Industrial Estate and the Heol Ty Gwyn Industrial Estate in Maesteg. TEACH KIDS HOW TO SAVE LIVES I am the first AM to use a new procedure at the National Assembly. By seeking other AMs support for a legislative proposal, I hoped to influence Welsh Government to introduce its own law requiring Welsh schools to teach life saving skills to all pupils. My proposal passed with support from members of all parties. It is also backed by a range of organisations as well as children, their families and their teachers. They too believe that regular training in CPR skills, using defibrillators, what to do if someone is choking, bleeding or unconscious will make our young people confident enough to step and not stand by. There are 1939 defibrillators throughout Wales – many provided by community councils and charities. They are simple to use but more are needed. Every year, 8,000 people in Wales suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting. But they only have a 3 per cent chance of survival compared to 50 per cent in other parts of Europe where learning life-saving skills is mandatory. We need to increase those odds by raising a generation of life savers, giving all our young people the right to know how to save a life. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

FEATURES COULD YOU BE A PUPPY WALKER FOR GUIDE DOGS CYMRU? Norah Clarke of Nottage has just taken delivery of a VIP – a Very Important Puppy. The golden retriever is just two months old, and is destined to become a guide dog when she is older. It’s Norah’s job to introduce the pup to as many new sights and sounds as possible to prepare it for the working life ahead. There’s great support from Guide Dogs staff, plus puppy training classes for exchanging tips and ideas. After 12 months living as part of the family, the time comes to wave the pup goodbye as it moves on to advanced guide dog training. “This is my 10th puppy,” said Norah. “You feel sad when each one goes, but you’re soon on to the next pup, going back to stage one!” Prospective puppy walkers need time to spend with the puppy, a secure garden and access to a car. It’s good to include the puppy in your daily routine, visiting shops and garden centres, doing the school run, going on public transport and joining in family days. Guide Dogs supplies basic equipment and covers all veterinary and feeding expenses. To find out more, email Steve.Kersley@guidedogs.org.uk or ring 07785 907728. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Every parent knows what it is like to be woken in the middle of the night by the cries of a child who has had a nightmare. Sometimes the fears are easily calmed when you turn on the light to show that there are no monsters under the bed. Sometimes the fears being expressed are more difficult: “I’m afraid of being alone.” or “Does everyone die?” Such occasions emphasize the inadequacy of words. So it’s a relief when the child says, “Please, just stay with me.” The response then is easy “Yes, of course I will stay with you.” But what if the question is: “Will you stay with me no matter what?” Because you know that, although you can stay with the child tonight and, hopefully for many nights in the future, there will come a time when they will cry out and you will not be able to be there. This 23rd psalm, with its assurance of God’s continued presence no matter what, was written for that parent and that child: “I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” God Bless Rev Lewis Rees Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Spring is nearly sprung thank goodness, so better weather and outside activities to look forward to. Meanwhile we have had plenty indoors to enjoy! Our annual presentation from David Anderson, this year ‘Discovering Italy’, is always appreciated. Amongst all the beautiful architecture of ancient Italy he showed us one particular picture that made us think. This was of Empress Theodora who 1500 years ago was a campaigner for the rights of women and girls. Today this campaigning is still needed around the world especially in Ethiopia where atrocities still occur. All our groups have been meeting - the games, craft, literary and monthly luncheon club. An excellent lunchtime drama at the Pavilion was enjoyed. Our coffee morning at the RAAFA club was a happy occasion with chance for a chat. Our meeting this month is our AGM on March 8th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall. You are welcome to come and listen to our reports and find out what we do! Dorothy Thomas. Tel: 772157

Recently I had the privilege of sharing my conversion story in a very good church, called Baglan Community Church. It was recorded and can be seen and heard on YouTube, Neil Harvey Baglan Community Church. There are lot’s of other great resources there so why not watch some. You may find exactly what you have been looking for in life. It was about 13 years ago that I had an amazing experience with Jesus when I was at rock bottom in my life. He lifted my burdens and transformed me as a person. God is really in the business of transformation. Nothing else seems to be able to do it. He goes way beyond anything in this world. It is an amazing feeling when you suddenly realise that God really does exist and you find a new relationship with the most amazing person in the universe. It feels like your coming home after being away for a long time. So go on, why not watch the YouTube clip. My prayer is that you will meet Him (God!). Gob bless you all! FEATURES LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS

Porthcawl Lions Club has made its first cheque presentations of the New Year. At a recent fund raising event, Club President, Don Tickner presented cheques to Paul Joseph (Chair of the Porthcawl Museum) and also to Mike Boyles on behalf of Action for Children. The Lions have been staunch supporters of the Museum providing practical support in its recent renovation, and the two groups have been pleased to work together to mutually benefit the work in which each organisation is involved. The Lions donation to Action for Children will enable the charity to help vulnerable children and young people, with practical support and counselling at a time of need. In making the presentations, President Don commented on “How pleased Porthcawl Lions are to be able to support two very worthy, but different organisations, which shows the diversity of the help which Lions Clubs are able to offer.” Porthcawl Lions have already made or pledged over £2000 in support to local, national and international organisations since the beginning of the New Year. NEWS FROM THE TALBOT Changes have been made to the Talbot Diners Club. For the past eight years we have been serving lunches on Wednesdays and Fridays, (originally Mondays also). We always produce a menu prior to the start of each month, giving details of the main course and dessert, and always accompanied by coffee or tea. Our charge for these meals, which are waitress served, with jugs of water on the table, is £4.50. Two weeks ago we changed the times of the lunches to start thirty minutes later so instead of 11.45am, lunch is now served at 12.15pm, and last orders will be taken by 1pm. The knock-on effect of this later start is that our Friday Bingo will also start later at 2pm (and finish later). We hope that the later start of our lunches will encourage more people to visit us, to try our meals, meet some old friends, and make some new acquaintances. We also offer a delivery service, and takeaways to our members who cannot get to the Talbot. For more information contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website : www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher Tel: 01656 749754

Recently, the Rotary Club of Bridgend presented a cheque for £5,887.44 to the Urdd Eisteddfod following a luncheon held in September 2016. The cheque was presented to Elin Mannion, Chair of the Bridgend Appeal Committee and Sian Stephen, Urdd Development Manager. The Bridgend Appeal Committee has now reached 75% of their target with a number of events organised for the last few months of fundraising. Aled Sion, Director of the Urdd Eisteddfod, said, “We really appreciate the work that has been done locally by a relatively small but busy group of people. The amount of money that has already been raised is great and we look forward to bringing our unique festival to Bridgend College Pencoed Campus 29th May – 3rd June this year.” Angharad Prys

FEATURES TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa

Last month Pam featured the Haberdashery element of TFSR and many thanks to those who responded. We were very pleased to give Workaid four knitting machines as they have established workshops in Tanzania for a home industry. Many thanks to Mrs Noreen Williams for supplying these. Also in February we had a visit from Ian Limbrick who is deputy CEO at the Headquarters of TFSR near Southampton and Moritz who is a volunteer from Frankfurt. (There is accommodation at Netley Marsh for four students from other countries). Ian gave a report of the groups he had visited recently. They took away eight crates of refurbished tools. These were allocated kits for those who had completed training and business management, comprising the following trades, carpentry, building and blockmaking, metal fabrication, site maintenance and kits to establish cycle repairing workshops. All these for one of the world’s poorest countries. This shipment represents refurbishing work over a two month period and will be part of a forty foot container being shipped to Malawi in March. If anyone wants to volunteer on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons please ring John on 01656 786367. John Hanson Group Coordinator

PORTHCAWL U3A March will be an exceptionally busy month starting with our evening celebration of St David’s Day (Thursday 2nd, Hi-tide) with Welsh Folk dancing, 2 concerts (Cardiff Friday 3rd) and The Albert Hall on 16th. The monthly talk (Wed 8th) will tell how John Hughes of Merthyr affected Khruschev and Russian History, and the monthly outing (Wed 29th) is to Cyfarthfa Castle. Coming up soon are our AGM and a Dutch Holiday, but meanwhile all our 39 interest groups continue to keep members happy and busy here at home.

Y CEFN GWYRDD “If you want a job done well do it yourself” describes the Gwyrdd attitude at present to Waun Cimla (Bedford Park). Despite many discussions with the council concerning the future of this fascinating area BCBC, due to financial cutbacks, has failed to come up with a management plan for the Waun. Here we have an attractive naturally regenerated woodland which has developed on the site of a 1970’s rubbish tip, a busy community route which runs along the line of the Dyffryn Llynfi Porthcawl horse drawn tramroad, and numerous industrial relics to be seen surrounding an exceptional ironworks centerpiece. Car parks are often filled with cars, but also rubbish. So recently we started a campaign to clean up the Waun. Our band of pickers spent a morning collecting from this small area and we collected sixteen bags! If you are interested in joining us friends of the Waun in any of our practical activities contact John. Notice I use the local name - the Waun, rather than the council’s Bedford Park. Traditional names are a small but important part of our heritage. Cefn Hirgoed is another that has been lost forever replaced by the Pines! John Mason masoncj4@hotmail.com Facebook: Cefn Gwyrdd

SUPERMOONS The Moon is the brightest object in the night sky and shines by reflecting sunlight in the same way as the planets and artificial satellites. Most planets have moons orbiting them but Earth’s moon is particularly large compared to the size of our planet. It’s the fifth largest moon in the solar system and almost as big as the planet Mercury. No wonder we can see so much intricate detail if we look at it through binoculars or a small telescope. You can see giant craters caused by asteroid collisions, lava filled seas and mountain ranges that are 4.4 billion years old. From Earth, we can only see 59% of the lunar surface because, like most moons in our solar system, the Moon rotates just once during the time it takes to complete an orbit. In recent years there has been a lot of excitement about ‘supermoons’. A supermoon occurs every year - sometimes there are several of them in the same year when the moon’s orbit brings it slightly closer than usual to Earth. But the change in size and brightness is usually around 7% and the human eye simply cannot tell the difference! Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

DIVORCE

THE INHERITANCE TAX TRAP The number of people liable to pay inheritance tax is set to rise considerably as a result of a surge in house prices and the Government’s unwillingness to raise the tax free amount people can leave to their heirs. 40% tax is payable on estates worth more than £325,000.00 and this is swallowing up an increasing amount of middle income families’ wealth. The number of liable estates has also doubled in recent years and more people are paying inheritance tax because in 2009 the Government froze the nil rate band at £325,000.00. Prior to this, the nil rate amount had risen every year since 1986 to keep pace with asset prices. It is unlikely that the band will be revised until 2019 at the earliest. Few people have a proper plan in place but there are things that you can do to prepare. From April 6th 2017 a new “Residential Nil Rate Band” will be introduced. This will allow everyone to pass on an additional £100,000.00 of property assets. The figure will rise gradually up to £175,000.00 by 2020. Therefore a person who dies in three years’ time will be able to leave £325,000.00 plus £175,000.00 to their direct descendants. A couple could leave one million pounds of assets. However the rules are complex and the Residential Nil Rate Band will be reduced for people with estates valued at more than two million. Another rule allows people to give up to £3,000.00 per year to an heir without paying inheritance tax. For example, this will allow grandparents to contribute towards their grandchildren’s education. This allowance can be carried into the next year if unused. If you have any queries relating to the above, it is worth seeking advice in order to avoid the inheritance tax trap. If you decide to separate or divorce your spouse there are a number of issues you need to consider. If you are the main or only earner in a marriage, you may need to continue providing financial support to your spouse before reaching any final agreement. Conversely, if you are financially dependent on your spouse, ask for suitable arrangements to be made. If your spouse refuses, you can apply to the court for an interim financial order. If you are concerned that your spouse will abuse them, you could close joint bank and credit card accounts. If your spouse is the sole owner of the family home, you can register your home rights to prevent the home being sold without your agreement. When considering the financial settlement, the first priority is to look after the welfare and financial needs of any children, more specifically, children under 16 and older children who are in full-time education or have a learning disability. In addition, the parent who no longer lives with the children will normally provide financial support. You can negotiate an agreement on child maintenance between yourselves or involve the Child Support Agency “CSA”. The other key factors to be taken into account include: • Each spouse’s income and other financial resources. Actual income, rather than prospects. Any pension entitlements are also taken into account. • Each spouse’s financial needs. • How long you have been married and how old each spouse is. The longer the marriage, the more likely it is that the less wealthy spouse will be entitled to a substantial share of the assets and/or continuing maintenance. • The contribution each spouse has made. Importantly, looking after the house and children can be as valuable a contribution as that of the partner who earned the income. The right agreement for you will depend on your circumstances and objectives. As a starting point, you should both fully disclose your financial positions. Once you have reached agreement, you should apply to the Court for a Consent Order. This allows the court to check that the agreement you have reached is fair. It also limits the ability of either spouse to ask the court to change financial arrangements, and makes it easier to take action if your former spouse fails to honour his or her commitments. If you cannot reach agreement between yourselves, you will need to apply to the Court for a Financial Order.

SKER WI & THE FABULOUS DR WILLIAM PRICE

On 9th February 2017 39 members of Sker WI were introduced to the charismatic Dr William Price by his biographer Dean Powell. Dean described Dr Price as a man raised in poverty by his mentally ill father and uneducated mother, who became a surgeon by the age of twenty-one, dreamed of creating a welfare state, creating a Museum of Welsh Life and dedicated himself to improving the lot of the Welsh working class. As he aged, his father’s mental health issues also seemed to affect Dr Price. He named his first son Jesus Christ Price, claiming he was a druidic Messiah. This was the child that Dr Price cremated after it died at 5 months. Cremation Act of 1902 was passed as a result of the resultant court case. Dr William Price was a man larger than life to the very end! LATER LIFE BORROWING – REAL OPTIONS FOR REAL NEEDS Who can believe that we’re already in March, with the spring upon us? The last few months has seen a marked increase in the number of providers and lenders, coming to the aid of people of retirement age whose needs for mortgages is still very real. In the past, once you reached around the 65 years of age mark, mortgages seemed to be out of reach but with the change in Society and the needs of people in the retirement phase of their lives, the requirement to meet those needs has become acute. The number of the over 60s who still have a mortgage, whether it be on a repayment or an interest-only basis, has increased massively and for the latter of those, the interest-only problem is one that will not go away. However, a number of mortgage lenders are now offering solutions to this group of senior aged people, permitting mortgages to continue well into later life. For those people with an interest-only mortgage where they simply do not have and cannot find the capital to repay the loan, there ARE now answers – downsizing is no longer the only way out. Indeed, many people do not WANT to downsize, preferring to remain in their own home if at all possible. Seaside News | 40

If YOU are in this group and are not sure which route to take, get some expert advice on the matter. We will gladly arrange for an experienced later life adviser to take a good look at your options, thus helping you to make an informed decision on which route is the most comfortable for you. More and more lenders are starting to offer solutions to people in later life, as they realise that this group has a massive amount of property equity, together with a responsible track record with regard to payments. Furthermore, with interest rates on virtually all later life mortgage options having massively decreased over the last year or so, anyone with a mortgage later in life should look NOW at what cheaper options there are in the market – there is a very real opportunity to cut payments by taking advantage of the lower rates on offer. Call us on 01656 782545 and we’ll be pleased to get you in front of an adviser who really could help you. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545

INHERITANCE TAX (IHT) RULE CHANGES From 6th April 2017, the total Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold for those who own a family home will increase until it reaches £500,000 in 2020. This means that home owning married couples and civil partners will be able to pass on assets worth up to £1m completely free of Inheritance Tax from April 2020. The ‘family home allowance’ will be set initially at £100,000 per person, rising by £25k per annum until it reaches the maximum of £175,000 in 2020. This extra allowance will be added to the current IHT threshold of £325,000 per person provided their main residence forms part of their estate and provided the property is immediately inherited by the deceased’s children (range includes stepchildren, adopted and foster children) or grandchildren. A deceased’s spouse can still inherit any unused IHT allowance. As a restriction to the new rules, the new ‘family home allowance’ will be gradually withdrawn for estates valued in excess of £2 million at the rate of £1 for every £2 over the £2 million limit. For further information about April’s changes or if you require Inheritance Tax planning advice in general, please do not hesitate to contact us. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

Winter is nearly over - thank goodness, March is the start of the busy season, with the job list lengthening with the daylight hours! Time to start sowing hardy annuals, best planted in informal drifts, lightly fork over the earth but don’t add compost, if the soil is too rich you’ll get lots of soft growth and few flowers and that would be a real shame. To make a nice pattern with different clumps of annuals try putting a little sand into a wine bottle and pouring it out to make the shapes you want then sow within these shapes (very posh and artistic) its good fun too! Sow onions and shallots in a sunny spot, use a trowel to plant them, don’t just push them into the soil, as the roots form they will push the set up and out again which is very aggravating! Get your early spuds in and start chitting the main crop potatoes. Also (my favourite task) let the battle of the weeds begin! It will be slugs next! Talking of weeds – did you know the French word for dandelion is ‘pissenlit’ maybe what your mother told you is true after all! Chris Early

The March winds doth blow and we shall have snow, so the old saying predicts and it’s not far off the mark. March is a busy season for gardener’s with a ‘must do’ list lengthening with the daylight hours, so March weather brings challenges with wind and frost. Dahlias that have been saved will need to be checked, and if weather permits prepare the ground ready to plant out next month. Grass has seemed to have kept on growing this winter so will probably need a gentle trim. In our small patch crocus have appeared - we didn’t plant bulbs so bit of a mystery but they are very welcome. Sweet peas, tomatoes, broad beans, onions need a long growing season to prosper so now is the time. A warm sunny window-sill, or a heated greenhouse will start them off. In the club members are preparing for the annual Plant Sale, which will be held in May. Pots are being washed and dried and discussions about types of plant etc are ongoing. The next lecture to be held in Laleston Gardening Club will be on Monday March 13th Parks and Gardens to visit with Sheena Crossley. Gwen Bradford

FANCY GROWING YOUR OWN? Cornelly Allotment Society is a private members allotment situated on the B4283 approach road from South to North Cornelly and currently consists of 40 plots. This is one of Wales’ oldest allotments and there has been an allotment on the site since the days of the lime kilns in the area, and was established in 1914 by the then land owner, Mr Eddie Morris. Vacancies are rare and at the moment there is no waiting list for plots so the society committee is inviting residents in the Cornelly and surrounding areas to submit applications for anticipated vacancies in the near future. If you would like to be included on the new waiting list simply email Society Secretary, Chris North and include your name, address and contact number. Good Luck! cornellyallotments@gmail.com

DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS

RIGHT VIEW (Continued)

It seems nearly everyone has digestive issues these days. Crohn’s, IBS, colitis, celiac, and dozens of other digestive disorders have made an industry out of sugar free, gluten free, and dairy free products. So why is it that those with digestive issues can’t often fully fix them, and have to follow a very strict diet or suffer the painful consequences? One of the main reasons you are not able to digest food properly is bacterial imbalance in your intestinal system. An ideal ratio for a properly functioning gut is 85 percent good bacteria to 15 percent bad, and when this is accomplished the good bacteria flourish and are allowed to do their job of digesting and absorbing certain starches, fibre, and sugars. Unfortunately, a lifetime of habits littered with antibiotics, sugar, alcohol, toxins, and ‘dead’ food has destroyed the proper balance we require for good digestion. Enzymes play a key role in our health by enabling our bodies to properly digest and use all the nutrients we take in to their greatest potential. If we do not introduce enough enzymes through our food, we put more pressure on the pancreas to produce enzymes in order to break down waste products, which eventually can leave it overworked and unable to produce the enzymes required to facilitate proper digestion. To maximize your enzyme production, first increase your consumption of raw, organic food like papaya, pineapples, bee pollen, kefir, and fermented vegetables. Chew your food thoroughly to properly mix them with your enzyme rich saliva, which helps the process of pre-digestion. Juicing is one way to really increase the amount of easily assimilated enzymes into your digestive system, as well as digestive and systemic enzyme supplements. Magnesium is also heavily implicated in proper functioning of muscles, including those in the lining of your digestive tract. A deficiency in magnesium causes the peristaltic action in your digestive system to slow right down, which hinders the movement of waste, and backs up the digestive process. Consider liquid magnesium supplements, and loading up on salads rich in leafy greens and vegetables. Learn more: www.naturalnews.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

Your experience of ‘now’ comprises of what you see, hear, touch, taste and smell. There is the role of memory, which gives you the information to construct and recognise an object or a past experience and name it as the present. Furthermore there are feelings, which are either pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. Our world is sensual, there is ‘craving’ or ‘aversion’. We feel a pull towards pleasant feeling / experience. We push away, unpleasant feeling / experience. This process happens very fast. Millions of bursts of data each day, this feedback loop is called ‘contact’ in the Buddhist doctrine. The Buddha gives meditation instructions so that we can become skilled at seeing this comet-like mind body experience. These methods aim to reduce ‘contact’. In essence this gives the mind stability and we slow down. Slowing down allows us to categorise thoughts, feelings and volition into ethical recognisable compartments. Thus the practitioner recognises ‘a process of revenge arises in this mind’, ‘a process of sexual desire arises in this mind’ ‘a process of escapism arises in this mind’ and so on. Thus awareness of mind/ body ethics allows us to finely tune our actions away from harm to ourselves and others. Kindful restraint allows ‘right view’ to be come evident in many situations. The result - a subtle flush of joy enters our minds. Thus we cultivate the good and serenity blossoms. Neville Evans

Arts BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

Five choristers were presented with life membership certificates by the Choir’s President, Paul Porter at Bridgend Male Choir’s Annual General Meeting. The five ‘lifers’ who achieved over 40 years service with the Choir were Alun Roberts Jones, Leon Evans, Peter Anderson, Mike Price and Mansel Abraham. Within every organisation there are background workers who carry out thankless tasks and one of those is John Keene, a long serving chorister of the Choir. John was presented with a Choir Plaque, in recognition of his hard work throughout the year in cajoling sponsors to support the choir, and in sourcing raffle prizes for the annual raffle. As Club Chairman, Gareth Davies, stated “If I was still working in sales I would have no hesitation in employing the best fund-raiser I know, John Keene”. Martin Cadogan mrcadogan@lineone.net

Plenty to write about this month! Local rock band Shy Warrior is back with a charity concert in aid of the Sandville Self Help at the Hi Tide on Friday 14th April. I reviewed the lads at the Stoneleigh Club in the 1980s when writing for another publication and they were brilliant. There’s ticket information on their Facebook page – more next month! Also, don’t miss the Cornelly Show at Pyle RFC on Saturday 15th April, featuring Wayne Davies and guests. It was sad to hear about the death of Deke Leonard from the band Man – he was a top musician and great guy. Jay Aston is back in Britain after his USA solo tour and is recording a new Gene Loves Jezebel album, so I’ll keep you posted on that. Porthcawl keyboardist Adrian Hooper is on the mend after a serious illness, let’s hope he’s performing again soon. There’s live music at Bridgend’s Hobos and The Wicked Lady, and at Porthcawl’s Picton Hotel, Brentwood, The Cabin, Marine and Porthcawl Hotel, which also has a Tuesday jam night featuring my drinking pal Mark Jones. Check each venue for details, and don’t forget to keep your music news coming. Stag Marks Tel: 07549 728356 Photo: Jay Aston

CANTORION COETY ENTER THEIR 10TH YEAR Cantorion Coety has embarked on their 10th year since the formation of the choir in 2007. At the AGM, held recently at Gilead Chapel, Spencer Road in Coity, the choir President, Dr John Elfed Jones, congratulated the choir on their success over the last 10 years and referred to the many concerts and charity performances Cantorion Coety have been so successfully involved with over that period. At the AGM, the music team, and all existing officers, were returned for another year of service. The Chairman, Gareth Brace, also noted the fact that 2017 will be the 10th year for the choir. He thanked all those associated with Cantorion Coety for their hard work and the unstinting support given to the choir over the past ten years. Unfortunately, Margaret Davies (Secretary) was unable to be present at the AGM. From those early days, there remain five of the original officers and music team who are in post since the choir was formed in 2007. Four of the original singers also remain, who still attend the scheduled practices and functions regularly. The five original officers are: Dr. John Elfed Jones (President), Eira Paskin (Musical Director), Christine Goldsworthy (Deputy Accompanist), Gareth Brace (Chairman) and Margaret Davies (Secretary). A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW The Bolex 16mm movie camera will be instantly recognisable to many cine enthusiasts of the past because it was the one camera that most ambitious amateur movie-makers wanted to own. It was also extensively used by professionals and film students. When I established Downwood Films in the 1980s, I already owned a Bolex, having progressed to 16mm from Super 8mm. This one, the RX4, is my fourth. The foldaway handle is used to wind up its clockwork motor and of course it needs a separate exposure meter to calculate the correct lens setting. It will undoubtedly bring an indulgent smile to the face of digital enthusiasts, but this camera was made in 1964 and I expect it to be shooting a film this year. What makes it so special? The fact that when you press the release button, it seems to come alive – the motor whirrs and you really are film making. I’m pleased to say that in this increasingly digital world, traditional film is making a comeback and I, for one, will continue to enjoy the simple pleasure of shooting rolls of 16mm Kodak film on a classic wind-up cine camera that does not rely on complex digital technology. Arts KENFIG HILL MALE VOICE CHOIR The choir once again has a busy year ahead. The first concert was at the Green Hall in Cefn Cribwr, where the capacity audience was treated to a night of both traditional choir music and songs from the musicals. Robert Tremlett gave two solo’s which were very well received by the audience as did the solo’s by Gary Hooper and Paul Burnell. The next Concert is on St David’s Day at the Cornelly Community Centre where tickets are going extremely quickly. The choir also have a very special event to appear at this year, namely the marriage of our retiring Chairman Harold Phillips to Ann McColl in May. The choir wishes them both all the best for the future. The choir, as always, welcome any new members. Practice is Monday and Thursday at the Choral Suite, Greenacres Motel, North Cornelly. Why not come along and see if you like it. For further information please contact me on the mobile number below. Paul Burnell Mobile: 07837 187274

ART IN FOCUS This month the focus is on another exciting new exhibition: Bacon to Doig: Modern Masterpieces from a Private Collection. This is a remarkable collection of art with works by Bacon, Hockney, Hepworth, Moore and Freud, to name a few. The collection is world class and brings together painters and sculptors from the Modern period to the present with Caro and Grayson Perry also being included! The exhibition reveals the collector’s knowledge and passion for Modern British Art and is a must for all lovers of Contemporary Art, as well as those who are new to it. It is on until January 31st 2018, so do come and see for yourself. Some of the artists shown are: Francis Bacon, considered to be one of the most controversial artists of his time, openly gay and with a wit and thirst for alcohol to match his artistic genius: Lucian Freud who painted a portrait of the Queen was renowned for his intense emotionally charged portraits: Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth were the two darlings of modern sculpture with curvature and anatomical associations within their work. As well as Anthony Caro - a Modernist and perfectionist through and through. More information: josephinelewington@yahoo.co.uk Josephine Lewington MA Seaside News | 50

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR CONCERT FOR G.E. AVIATION The Choir was proud and honoured to sing in the National Museum of Wales for G.E. Aviation. The event brought together people from around the Globe and we were invited to give them a taste of Welsh Male Singing before their banquet. Our programme opened with O’ Gymru which was greeted with a standing ovation from the assembled guests. The remainder of the programme included a mixture of music from shows as well as traditional Welsh pieces. Phil Davies sang the solo entrance to Bring Him Home (Les Miserables), and John Jones had everyone participating in the final number - African Trilogy. Our deputy chairman Simon Hughes presented the organizer, Mr Peter Silverthone, with a commemorative choir plaque and necktie. It was stated that we can expect to be invited to other events in the future and that G.E. Aviation wish to foster a close relationship with our Choir. Mal Evans

is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Stormy Down, North Cornelly, South Cornelly, Kenfig, Mawdlam, Margam Village, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cefn Cribwr, Pen-y-Fai, Laleston, Broadlands,

Whiterock, Brackla, Coity, Bryntirion & Bridgend town centre and Welsh business owner Phil Powell agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MP TO JUDGE BRIDGEND FAIRTRADE BAKE-OFF, BRIDGEND Bridgend County Fairtrade Partnership is holding a Fairtrade Festival including a ‘Bake-Off’ at Carnegie House, Wyndham Street, Bridgend from 11am to 3pm. This is a family event and there will be Fairtrade stalls, coffee bar, stalls, story-telling, music, films, tombola etc. The ‘Fairtrade Bake-Off’ is organised by charity Sustainable Wales and Madeleine Moon MP has agreed to judge. This is an exciting opportunity for pupils from local schools, groups, churches and the baking public to get involved and help promote fairtrade. Think about chocolate cupcakes, teisen lap, Austrian coffee cake and get baking. Last year’s fairtrade ‘bake-off’ winners in Porthcawl were 11year old Mack Jenkins, a former contestant on CBBC TV Bake-off programme and Nottage Primary (with assistance from staff). Bring your cake and recipe along (include as many Fairtrade ingredients). Carnegie House will be open from 9.30 a.m. Judging will take place from 10.30 (prizes for best under 15 and best over 15 entry). The cakes/goodies will be used for refreshments and the public will be invited to vote for the ‘public’s choice’ for an additional prize. PUBLIC MEETING – RENEWABLE ENERGY, PORTHCAWL At The Grand Pavilion, (Stage Door) 7.30pm. This event is organised by Porthcawl charity Sustainable Wales, featuring guest speakers from Community Energy Wales, Renew Wales, Institute Welsh Affairs and Cardiff University. The meeting will discuss how communities might take back control of their energy systems. It will ask how Porthcawl and Bridgend might establish community owned local renewable energy companies. This is seen by many as a step towards economic renewal. Wales and the UK lag behind our European neighbours and some states in the USA regarding local energy production. The scene will be set by screening the film ‘Shine a Light?’ which makes a case for more support for local energy projects. Made by Sustainable Wales Productions, ‘Shine a Light?’ has already been premiered in Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff and viewed online by many. Speaking of the event, Director Margaret Minhinnick said: “It is difficult to think of more important issues, tackling climate change and economic regeneration locally. ‘Shine a Light?’ is a beautifully made film, with a wonderful soundtrack. The speakers are experienced and committed to supporting local initiatives I hope local people attend.” More information: 01656 783962 / 773627 http://www.sustainablewales.org.uk/shine-light Saturday 8th April

Sport PORTHCAWL RUNNERS

With the couch to 5k programme for beginners in full swing and everybody making great progress their focus is now on completing the Porthcawl Parkrun on 18th March 2017. The damper February weather is failing to dampen spirits and the more experienced runners are also working hard on goals ranging from improving their 5k times to running marathons. Plenty of team competition is available as well as the West Glamorgan Cross Country League is in full swing, with a recent challenging race at Margam Park, which was very well attended. A special mention to two of our members who have been battling illness, who enjoyed personal victories in February and shared their achievements with the club. Mike ‘the taxi’ Davies has recently been undergoing treatment at Velindre, but has kept up a full attendance at the weekly Porthcawl Parkrun and received an Endeavour Award from the Bridgend Running League for his efforts. Well done Mike Davies. Another Mike from the club - Mike Atkins, sadly suffered a severe stroke last year, but has displayed tremendous positivity and really climbed a mountain to get back to running the Parkrun again. The photo this month shows Mike Atkins after completing the Parkrun for the first time since his stroke, and being supported by team members, most of whom dressed in orange for the occasion. TAP IT OUT CC Club membership for 2017 opened on the 1st of January and already we’re up to 46 members, with lots of new faces, this year looks set to me very busy. With the success of the Barcelona to Monaco ride, the committee have agreed to run a trip from Nice to Rome in September 2018. Planning is well on its way with a saving scheme started, hotels found and a challenging route ready to be rolled out at the next meeting. A very mild winter has seen lots of members piling in the millage - none more evident than Jason Bishop the mile muncher. Jason regularly tops the Strava millage table with 250+ per week. With Scott Sidoli Kenny back on the bike after a nasty fall, I don’t think Jason will be have it all his own way at the top in the weeks to come. Good luck lads. Membership is £20. Club rides throughout the winter are on Saturday and shift workers rides are held most days during the week. So come ride with likeminded cyclists and let TAP IT OUT help you achieve your goals. Every week we see the players improving and this is down to their hard work and determination. With less than a quarter of the season remaining, we hope the weather is kind to us, so the boys can finish their Tag Rugby season off with plenty of matches before they continue their rugby journey with contact next season.
