We can withhold this information if you wish, but we can't publish letters without it.

Porthcawl seafront banners Dear Editor, With regard to the proposed erection of advertising banners on the lamp posts along the seafront in Porthcawl. Reference number: A/13/23/ADV. I wish to express my strong opposition to the above on the following grounds: unfit product for purpose

Why do we need permanent banners to advertise ‘events and other tourism info’, which by their very nature, are often temporary? I fear that in order to justify their permanence, the banners will be used as a more commercial means of generating revenue for BCBC. In order to successfully advertise local events and attractions, the banners would need to be regularly updated with current information. With stretched budgets within BCBC, how likely is this to happen? visual intrusion

The lamp posts are all within the local nature reserve and the coastal zone defined in the Unitary Development Plan, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Surely it is in the interest of BCBC to preserve and protect such assets to the borough. Tourists, and local residents alike, use

the new walkway to Rest Bay from the start of Locks Common, to enjoy the view across unspoiled common land. Flapping banners will by no means enhance this experience. noise nuisance

There is no doubt that the vinyl mesh fabric used for the banners will create a noise nuisance particularly as this area is subject to very strong winds. It is also highly likely that the fixtures and fittings will cause an added noise nuisance. This would be both unwelcoming for walkers and a constant annoyance to residents all along the proposed route. hazard to motorists

An important consideration in the design of street furniture is how it affects road safety. Why would BCBC try to actively encourage motorists to take their eyes from the road whilst driving along the edge of a public walkway? inappropriate expenditure

Elegant lamp posts have been installed along the promenade in keeping with the Victorian feel of the seafront. Why would BCBC deface these lamp posts with tasteless, pointless, unattractive banners? I would like to remind BCBC that the following means of advertising local events and tourist info already exist: www.seawaylooe.co.uk

The face of evil?

Re: Porthcawl's killing machines Dear Editor, As the owner of the three cats mentioned in the letter by Mrs A Williams in April's issue, I would like to take this opportunity to reply to the letter. Firstly, let me apologise for the actions of the three cats. It was never my intention to cause any suffering to any other animals or birds. However, we adopted the three cats in question from the Cats Protection in Bryncethin, after they had been abused and neglected, not by animals but by humans! (Two of them still bear the scars of the ill treatment). Cats are cats and will behave as nature intended but humans are the only intentional cruel creatures. Your provocative letter referring to our cats as 'killer machines', I believe is now being circulated on the internet. I believe it could now be used for justification for even more cruelty to cats. I hope it was not Mrs Williams intention to course further suffering but unfortunately there are always disturbed and cruel people who will use any excuse to justify their illegal actions. The result of publishing this letter with such emotion and provocative terms will, I believe, be used in years to come to justify cruelty. (Don't just take my word for this, just type into the internet cat haters or cat killers. The results are disturbing). The Seaside News and Mrs Williams' irresponsible use of language will condemn many cats and cause them more suffering. Anyone who publishes articles has a responsibility for the consequences.

10 | Seaside News

Let me repeat that I am against any cruelty to animals but I do not condemn one species more than another. Only humans are responsible for causing suffering by their neglect, actions, deeds or words. Mr RJ Thomas Porthcawl Dear Editor, I'm writing in response to the letter you posted in April's issue regarding the 'Porthcawl Killing Machines'. I must admit, I was quite taken aback when I read this article. I myself have two adorable cats of my own and have never had much problem with them killing wildlife. As a fact of basic nature, cats do kill small animals, but how is this different to us humans killing animals too? I am hoping Ms Williams does not own any animals of her own and is indeed a vegetarian if she feels as if wildlife should be left untouched! If not, I find it very hypocritical that this situation has surfaced in this article. I'm sure the owners of these cats condone such behaviour but there is only so much an owner can do to prevent their cat or indeed dog and others pets from killing or playing with a few birds. Domestic cats are only responsible for 29 percent of the birds killed and 11 percent of small mammals. I therefore find it unreasonable and harsh to brand these cats in particular as 'killing machines' especially when us humans are much closer to fitting this description! I feel cats should be left to run their own course and feel that it is wrong to keep them cooped up indoors when all animals belong in the outdoors. I do

agree that if necessary a bell should be attached to the cat's collar although neither of my cats have collars - they are obedient and do not eat any winged thing in their path! Owners should make sure their cats are well fed to avoid this and all people should avoid putting food on the ground for birds to eat! Investing in a bird feeder will make everyone much happier. I am also slightly offended by the image used in the article that shows a vicious looking cat when the majority of cats look like my cats. I've attached a photo of one them for reference. Anyway, in summary of all this, I frankly blame the birds. They have wings for a reason and should be aware of oncoming predators, be it cats, dogs or any other animal. Ms Suddell Bristol

two birds killed and left in our garden. We used to feed all the wild birds, but we stopped when we realised we were also supplying food for cats! It should be mandatory that all cats should wear collars with bells. At least then small mammals and birds would at least have a fair chance. It is totally unacceptable for cat owners to say it is just nature‌what if we had a dog and it killed a cat in our garden – I'm quite sure they would change their views then. We do like cats, but we've had enough of them using our garden as a toilet and killing our wildlife. Come on cat owners, sort it out! Justine & Kelvin

afon y Felin news Easter Results: Easter bonnet parade: Nursery: 1st Dylan Bourne, 2nd Zac Thomas, 3rd Ellie-May Martin. Reception: 1st Rhys Smalldon, 2nd Megan White, 3rd Lucy Stephens. Year One: 1st Callum Thomas, 2nd Emilia White, 3rd Amber Hallett. Year Two: 1st Natalia Purcell, 2nd Cerys Pritchard, 3rd Matthew Munday. Year Three designed Easter cards: 1st Ieuan Charles, 2nd Charlie Perham, 3rd Sam Matthews. Year Four decorated eggs: 1st Ellie Stimpson, 2nd Ben Courtney, 3rd Ellie Perham. Year Five created an Easter garden: 1st Nia Matthews, 2nd Amber Roberts, 3rd Sky Smalldon. Year Six decorated a t-shirt: 1st Elise Jones, 2nd Chloe Baker, 3rd Lucy Charles.

Music was provided by Ellie Stimpson on the trombone, Jarrad Davies and Lucy Charles on trumpets, Amber Roberts and Levi McArthur on clarinets and Sky Smalldon, Elise Jones, Rhys Rawnson and Arwen James on violins. The parents' cake decorating competition was won by Ann-Marie Baker, 2nd was Clair Stephens, 3rd Amanda Thomas and in 4th place was June Solomon. It was a wonderful afternoon, the children sang beautifully and every entry had taken so much effort, they were all winners! In the Nursery we had eggs in an incubator; there are now eleven little chicks! They are so pretty, and it was a wonderful opportunity for the children to watch them hatching.

Our spring term ended with several different events including two excellent informal concerts at which families and friends were treated to performances from a large number of pupils, Year 2 upwards through to senior children, singing and playing the musical instruments that they learn. Some pupils from Years 5 and 6 had an exciting afternoon at Battlefield Live Neath (thank you, Caren Jones) and as usual the Easter Bunny left surprises for younger pupils who also enjoyed parading in their splendid Easter hats. During the Easter break our Holiday Club operated and activities included cake

St. Clare’s School have welcomed a new Headmaster this term. Mr Simon Antwis has joined the school and is very pleased and excited to be the newest member of our family. Mr Antwis said that his main priority is “to ensure St. Clare’s is recognised for the outstanding teaching, learning and pastoral care that takes place here.” Over the Easter holidays Senior School pupils enjoyed an unforgettable trip to New York City. The group made sure that every second of every day was filled with something interest-

decorating, craft and trips out. Several pupils were busy with performances outside of school and our congratulations go to Bibiana Viazzani, Year 6, who has successfully passed a vocal audition for the Royal College of Music in London, to Joshua Olsen, Year 6, who has been singing a solo part with the Welsh National Opera, and to Ben White, Year 9, who was in the chorus and Stefan Farmer, Year 11, who had the lead role in Performance House production of West Side Story. We have already started the busy summer term now and our good wishes are especially for Year 11 as they embark on their GCSEs. ing and memorable. Highlights of their trip included a Hudson River Cruise, seeing 'Matilda' the musical on Broadway and a visit to the top of the Rockefeller Centre to watch the sun set over New York. Everybody had a wonderful time and found it difficult to bid farewell to the city that never sleeps. Our budding football stars from the Prep School recently enjoyed a fantastic tour of the Liberty Stadium in Swansea, seeing the grounds where Swansea FC train! As the weather improves, our pupils are looking forward to being able to spend more time outdoors in our beautiful grounds, making the most of outdoor learning sessions in our garden and preparing for a variety of summer sporting fixtures on our new MUGA. st. Fundraising Challenge: Fairtrade meets the boardroom Sustainable development charity, Sustainable Wales, is launching a Fundraising Challenge aimed at secondary schools, further education colleges and youth groups. We’re looking for four teams of four young people to compete to raise money for, and awareness of, Sustainable Wales. In the process, gaining valuable ICT, business and communication skills. The teams will be tasked with organising and putting on a fundraising event. To achieve this, each team will be given £100 start-up, and expert tuition from our four resident ‘dragons’, including, a public speaking/presentation tutorial from twice ‘Wales Book of the Year’ winner,

Porthcawl Primary school

This year at Porthcawl Primary school we have introduced a brand new subject. It’s actually a very old subject as it’s been around for over 2000 years! The subject is Philosophy and every pupil at Porthcawl Primary now has a weekly lesson. It has had a big impact in our school and we have found that our pupils’ are excellent philosophers as they naturally wonder about so many things in the world around them. Each week pupils come up with a philosophical question we then discuss as a class. So far our pupils have come up with some fascinating questions such as: • What would happen if it rained chocolate instead of

Robert Minhinnick. Once the teams have completed their tutorials, they will be asked to create an action plan for their event, and pitch it using PowerPoint to the 'dragons’. Fundraising can be anything from a ‘battle of the bands’ to a bake sale. The teams will be assessed, not only on the amount of money they make, but also: team work, sustainability and presentation skills. We’ll also provide Fairtrade chocolate at all the events. The Challenge is suitable for anyone aged 14–25, we’re specifically targeting year 10 pupils, as the tutorials and presentation will take place during late June/July – after exams. Philosophy is a great subject because there are no right or wrong answers and everyone learns from each other. We have found that pupils enjoy the sessions and have become much more confident speakers as the year has gone on. We would also like to thank all the parents that recently attended our meeting on the upcoming reading and numeracy tests as well as the numeracy and literacy framework. It was great to see such a good turnout and we really appreciate all the support given by our parents. We had a great ending to the spring term with our Easter bonnet and bike parade and we look forward to an action packed summer term. andReW Wood

Children & young people column

It’s that time of year again www.cardiff.ac.uk when many young people are approaching the end of school and are preparing to go to college or university. Moving on from school and away from home can be a daunting prospect for anyone, but young people in care often find it especially challenging. Here at the council, we know that many young people in care have lots of potential. That’s why our Looked After Children Education (LACE) team has been working with Cardiff and Newport universities to make their transition into higher education less challenging. Together, we’ve given young people a chance to sample university courses, have explained

what support is available to them while studying and have given them opportunities to experience the university lifestyle in a safe, supported environment. We’ve also helped them feel comfortable about issues like managing finances, making new friends and living independently. The recent LACE awards highlighted the fantastic achievements of 130 looked after children who have overcome hard times to achieve success at school and in their lives. If we continue to give young people the right support, they will keep flourishing in the face of adversity, and achieve their goals in higher education and beyond. CounCilloR huW david

a garden tax?

The decision by Labour Councillors to charge £27 a year for the fortnightly kerbside collection of residents’ garden waste is effectively a tax on gardening. The charge is £23 for pensioners. The question that the Council need to answer is why are they charging here when a similar service is free in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. Is this just another moneymaking idea for the Council? When the Liberal Democrats first introduced kerbside recycling in Bridgend they paid for

Concern over the nhs

The dire state of the NHS in Wales gives rise to mounting concern. Consultants are warning that A&E departments are at breaking point. Nurses, GPs and junior hospital doctors have added their voices to the growing chorus demanding a change of direction from the Welsh Government. People must realise that the Welsh NHS has been run by Welsh Labour since devolution in 1999. The Tory-led coalition government in London is not to blame for the current funding crisis which has left the ABMU Health Board needing to save £56m this year as funding for the NHS was ring-fenced.

it from our Council Tax. Now Labour want to levy a new tax for what should be a standard service. The Council need to put together an action plan to address the decline of the town centre. I am concerned that the number of empty shops will grow as a result of the decision to move the library down to the Recreation Centre. The Council failed to listen to public opinion in implementing this move and as a result many people will struggle to get to the new site. Inevitably this will lead to fewer people going into town and using the shops there. PeteR blaCK aM

Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net www.peterblack. blogspot.com

Attempting to meet this impossible target will result in more beds being axed and community hospitals closing. The consequences are already terrifying. A&E departments across South Wales were overwhelmed recently by a surge in seriously ill people needing to be hospitalised. There were no beds for them. And yet the Labour Government is pressing ahead with its plans to cut £534m from the Welsh health budget over three years. We will end up with a Third World health service in Wales – already patients in England are receiving better treatment and have access to the latest drugs – denied to our people on cost grounds. bYRon davies

one regulator, two regulators; changes to financial watchdogs

April brings with it the start of a new financial year and often a raft of changes to benefits, tax allowances and this year, two new regulators to oversee our financial system in the wake of the various scandals and problems that have come to light in recent years. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has been replaced by two regulators with distinct responsibilities. My real message to readers is how much we need your help to make the county borough a better place. On its own, the council can make improvements, but to really improve lives, we need everyone to work together. Our plan is ambitious, and while public spending constraints and the weak economy will undoubtedly be challenging, we are nevertheless determined to improve lives in Bridgend County Borough over the next four years. work after twelve months than any other group. David Pugh, of PRIME Cymru, said: “We welcome the slow but steady increase in older workers in employment. However, if the Welsh Government had reached their 80% target, a further 4,520 older workers would be employed in Bridgend. However, without major investment and support for older workers to become and remain economically active, the Welsh Government will never reach their target. “We are losing the skills experience and expertise of a generation. People not working in their fifties are likely to be the poor and unhealthy pensioners of the future. Whilst we fully support the measures being introduced to help younger job-seekers, older people need and deserve specialist tailored support to maximise their potential." teRRY Mills

I’m really excited about the excellent news that more than £1m is to be made available to restore historic Porthcawl buildings in the vicinity of the town’s harbour and square areas. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and Bridgend County Borough Council, the money is being provided under the first phase of Porthcawl’s new Townscape Heritage Initiative to refurbish and restore structures such as the Jennings building and the former Knight’s Arms public house. We’ll be looking at how these buildings can be brought back

through Christian eyes Cadets pay a flying visit to ba interiors

With the kind permission of Sarah Baker and her team, cadets and staff from 2117 Squadron Kenfig Hill visited British Airways Interiors Blackwood. On arrival at BA Interiors we were welcomed by Mr Paul Bradbury and the cadets and staff were treated to a short presentation on BA Interiors and the role they play within British Airways. The staff and cadets were then introduced to three BA ambassadors: Steve Jones, Ian

Tancock and Suzanne Harris who gave them a guided tour which included seating for economy and first class, emergency evacuation slide which Cdt Cpl Aston was given permission to activate as a demonstration. The cadets were also given a chance to try on life jackets and activate those that were nearing their expiry date, so no wastage. After the tour Cdt Cpl Aston presented a Squadron plague to BA Interiors, see photo. Sgt (ATC) Kevin Gould who organised the visit would like to thank all at British Airways Interiors as without their kind generosity staff and cadets would not have had such an opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes at one of the UK’s leading airlines. lindsaY thoMas

As a resident of Porthcawl I like to walk along the prom and have a look at the work going on to turn the harbour into a marina. (I love work, I could watch it all day!). While I'm there I also look in the window of the RNLI shop and read about the most recent rescue by the brave and commitment members of our local lifeboat team. We are so fortunate to have them and many people have them to thank that they are still alive today. I read recently that in January this year Aberystwyth RNLI dedicated their new Arancia inshore lifeboat at the town's Holy Trinity Church in a special

service for crew members, local dignitaries, church members and the general public. (There are some great pictures online). It's great to see that local connection between the Aberystwyth RNLI and their local churches. After all, aren't both involved in and concerned for saving lives? In the Bible it tells us that Jesus twice rescued a boat load of his disciples from a storm on lake Galilee. On one of those occasions personally pulling Peter out of the water. You can read the story in Matthew's gospel, Chapter 14, Verses 22-36. One American church, standing near a local swimming pool, had a poster on its outside notice board: "Our Life Guard Walks On Water". As the summer holiday season begins let us remember to value and support the RNLI as we also give thanks for the ultimate and eternal Saviour, Jesus Christ. Rev. MaRtin GillaRd

ssaFa rebrand The mid Glamorgan Branch of military charity SSAFA Forces Help has changed its name to SSAFA as part of a rebrand aimed at improving awareness of the charity amongst members of the Forces community. This is particularly important at a local level where SSAFA’s teams of trained volunteers work hard to ensure that help and advice are always close at hand. Last year alone, mid Glamorgan Branch supported 150 veterans and their families in our local community. Families have always been at the heart of what SSAFA does and they have been put at the

centre of the brand. The change of name is supported by a modern new logo with a three colour underline to represent the charity’s lifelong support to the Navy, Army and RAF. These changes follow a long period of consultation with volunteers and staff as well as members of the military community. SSAFA has supported our Forces and their families for more than 125 years but the work we do now is more vital than ever before. It's really important that those who serve and those who used to serve in our Forces know that SSAFA is here for them and their families for life. dave davies

Our shop is a veritable Aladdin’s cave, where the exotic allure of shimmering silk sits, juxtaposed against the homely charm of crocheted ponchos! As a community cooperative, SUSSED has a truly democratic system of management that isn’t bound by the conventional notions of hierarchy that often hinder progress and stand in the way of fairness. Being owned entirely by its volunteers and members, all enjoy an equal voice and an equal stake in the future of the business. birdWatch: Chaffinch Chaffinch

PHOTO: Derek Moore

The male chaffinch’s plumage is colourful – it has a chestnut back and pinkishorange underside, a blue crown and nape and distinctive double white bars on the wings. The buff-brown female is darker above than below and has pale wing bars. During the breeding season males defend their territory and main food source, invertebrates (they eat seeds and other plant material in winter). Chaffinches are

susceptible to the Fringilla papillomavirus disease which produces growths on the foot or bare part of the leg. These can vary in size from a small nodule to something that covers the whole leg. Garden BirdWatch data show that chaffinches are spotted more often in Welsh gardens than other parts of Britain. Although insectivorous at this time of year, try attracting them to your garden by feeding sunflower hearts on the ground. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. Previously unknown star system found nearby A pair of newly discovered stars is the third-closest known star system to the Sun, the closest one discovered for nearly 100 years. Both stars in the new binary system are brown dwarfs, 'failed' stars which never became hot enough to ignite hydrogen fusion, because their masses are too small. As a result, they are very cool and dim, resembling a giant planet like Jupiter more than a bright star like the Sun. Their distance is about 6.5 light-years. The system is named WISE J104915.57-531906 because

it was discovered in a map of the entire sky obtained by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite. It is only slightly further away than the second-closest star, Barnard's star, which was discovered 6.0 light-years from the Sun in 1916. The closest system of all consists of the double star Alpha Centauri, found to be a neighbour of the Sun in 1839 at 4.4 light-years, and its faint and distant companion Proxima Centauri, discovered in 1917 at 4.2 light-years. WISE was able to calculate the nearness of the star system because it moves more quickly across the sky than the other stars. Clive doWn Bridgend Astronomical Society

On behalf of everyone there, many thanks to Don and Marilyn for a truly

Porthcawl Parkinson’s support Group In our March meeting of the Porthcawl Parkinson’s Support Group, Mr Les Charlesworth gave a slide show about a journey made on the famous 'Silk Road'. The journey started from Banpo (just outside Xian in China), here are the ruins of a Bronze Age village, that 6,000 years ago produced silk. The rout goes on to Xian with its renowned Terracotta Army. Onward to Wuwei, where they discovered entombed bronze horses and riders. These date slightly before the terracotta army. Onto the Jiaguguan Museum, which has a 'Corridor of shame' exhibiting pictures of archaeologists who had stolen relics from the Magoa caves, near Dunhuang. The journey continues to tree-lined streets and underground canals of Turfan city, a city situated 156 meters below sea level. The journey continued to the tranquillity of Heaven’s Lake, located in the Tien Shan Mountains. This contrasted with the hustle and bustle of the Sunday Market of Kashgar. This awe-inspiring journey continued through Kyrgyzstan, with its beautiful Al Archer valley, Uzbekistan, Samarkand and finally on to Bukhara and its famous madrasahs. and the monthly newsletter from our Twin Guild in Mansfield. Members were told of future events – a cinema visit to see 'Quartet', our usual very popular monthly luncheon and outings to the Cotswolds and Dyffryn Park. The excellent speaker was Judge John Prosser, retired after 43 years in the law with a wealth of stories told in a most entertaining way. He has recently written a book 'His Honour, My Honour', recounting his life in the law, the career he decided on at the age of 11. Our next meeting will be on 8th May, 2pm at All Saints Church hall when the speaker will be Mr Clive Williams on 'A Taste of Music'. Musical afternoons are always popular so do come and join us. d thoMas

Porthcawl inner Wheel At the end of February we celebrated International Day with Porthcawl Rotary at the Hi-Tide. Students from Atlantic College (some in traditional costume) talked about their courses and countries they came from, and we were entertained by the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar from Porthcawl Comprehensive School. It was a well attended and enjoyable evening. March and April brought us two contrasting meetings. Christine James from Rob Shop 'experimented' on two members in a make-up demonstration and gave tips on how to look beautiful! Then last month Ruth Birch talked to us. Ruth is chairman of the Porthcawl Branch of the Royal British Legion and has served in the Forces herself. It was very well presented and illustrated, interesting and informative. She spoke about the formation and development of the British Legion including local details. Past president Liz Jones organised a well supported coffee morning at her home for

the Mercy Ships who provide medical help for poor countries and our next meeting under President Mary Emment Lewis will be on 7th May at the Rest Hotel where we especially enjoy their home-made pies and tarts! JaniCe Jones

talking tidy “Well done boyo” was the enthusiastic response from members following Alan Jones fascinating talk on 'Talking Tidy in Wenglish' at the U3A April speaker meeting. Cleckerbox, Conflab, Skewiff, and Achavi, Daps for plimsolls, Dust for Silicosis, Big Butts for close friends, gwli for lane and “I’ll see you now in a minute” were all discussed. “She was didoreth and under the doctor but a cwtch from her Bopa did wonders” A wonderful lexicon that recalled the happiness of childhood for many and memories were further stimulated with a multitude of nick names from the past such as Dai Full Pelt the runner, Tommy Twp the slow student, Red Reg and Dai Moscow with their communist panacea. Wenglish is an amalgam of Welsh and English resulting from their 150 year collision during the industrial revolution. It is a spoken not written language rich in village or town characters and heard mainly with a South Wales Valley dialect. An excellent humorous talk that made many pleased and proud of their former years and U3A encourages everyone to attend their meetings.

sker Wi The April meeting of Sker WI was held recently at St David's Church hall, Nottage. The president Nina Charlesworth welcomed the members present. The speaker for the evening was Vernon Edwards who gave a very informative talk on "Native American Indians" and was dressed in Indian costume. The original Indians came south from Siberia and Mr Edwards described how the tribes lived and survived by moving from place to place. There were many different tribes and the Sioux Indians lived mainly on the plains. It was only when the Spanish arrived in American that the Indians finally had horses. Within a family the girls were brought up by the women and likewise the boys by the men. When it came to marriage the father accepted the highest bid for his daughter. The Indian clothes and headdresses are very ornate. There are still Indians in America who now live on Reservations. Final arrangements are being made for the forthcoming link meeting. The next meeting will be on 9th May when it will be the AGM and the resolutions will also be discussed. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. ann viPond

Changes to legal aid COMING SOON!

NEW! À LA CARTE Available 12–9.30pm

SUNDAY CARVERY Available 12–3pm

You may be aware that from 1st April 2013 there has been a drastic change in the provision of legal aid. Previously legal aid was available to you if you were financially eligible, that is in receipt of a low income or welfare benefits. Legal aid covered obtaining advice in relation to most aspects of the law, including family disputes. Since April 2013 however, you will only be able to obtain family legal aid for the following cases: domestic violence injunctions, forced marriage applications, child abduction cases, care proceedings and representation of children in private family cases. At Melanie Lazarus and Co we realise that the above changes to the legal aid system will have a negative impact upon

people’s ability to access legal advice. The reality of the situation is people will have to pay in order to obtain legal advice that was previously effectively free. We offer an initial fixed fee appointment during which you will have the opportunity to discuss in depth your issues with our team of experts and have practical advice as to the next steps. There is no obligation upon you to instruct us further if you do not wish to. Also, if you are in receipt of Welfare Benefits such as Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, ESA or Pension Credits we will be happy to charge you at legal aid rates which are roughly one third of the rate you would expect to pay ordinarily. If you wish to take advantage of this, you will need to show us proof of your benefit claim. If any of the above is relevant to you then please arrange an appointment with us. Madeline Rand

active vs Passive investment If you’re placing your money into an investment fund, there are two main strategies you’ll encounter - active management and passive management. Debate has raged over the years as to which is the most effective way to invest your money. What is active management?

Actively managed investment funds are run by a professional fund manager or investment research team, who make all the investment decisions. They have extensive access to research in different markets, sectors and often meet with companies to analyse and assess their prospects before making a decision to invest. The aim with active management is to deliver a return that

is superior to the stock market that the companies sit within. An actively managed fund can offer you the potential for much higher returns than a particular market is already providing. It also means that you have somebody tactically managing your money, so when a particular sector looks like it might be on the up, or one region starts to suffer, the fund manager can move your money accordingly to expose you to this growth or shield you from potential losses. What is passive management? Passive investment

funds will simply track a market. The funds are essentially run by computer and will buy all of the assets in a particular market, or the majority, to give you a return that reflects how the market is performing. Pros and cons: Some areas

of investment are much better suited to active rather than passive management eg. property funds, technology, healthcare, smaller companies or emerging markets like China, where expert knowledge can help to seek out value. One of the biggest drags on this performance however, is costs. For the privilege of getting an expert fund manager, you have to pay much higher fees than a passive investment fund. asset allocation: Disagreements will continue as to the best method of investing, however, there is widespread agreement amongst professional advisers that spreading your money across many sectors using a rigorous asset allocation process is as, if not more important than the methodology used. stuck & unable to move ? 95% now available! This month we focus on those people, both still working and retired (or close to it) who are stuck and unable to move house because they either have too little equity in their property or because they are considered by the high street lenders to be too old. We now have access to 95% funding for those who are specifically looking to move to their 2nd, 3rd or 4th house. The funding is provided by a building society not a bank and is subject to income and affordability, plus other criteria. The facility has been made available in an effort to help those who are stuck and cannot move, which will hopefully also help first time buyers, for whom there is now 95% available once more. It is not available on the high street, so please call us.

For those of you who are already of retirement age or close to retiring but also have outstanding mortgages, there are now schemes available to you to ease the burden somewhat – call us for details. This can be helpful where your capital has dwindled or you have an endowment policy or other repayment product which has fallen short on performance, leaving you with a shortfall to repay the mortgage. As an alternative, the debt is settled when the last surviving partner becomes deceased and the property sold, either to the public or a member of the family. Something for your diary – by request, we are once again holding one of our popular 'Later Years' seminars, sometime in the near future. We shall be covering many issues that affect us in later years and the seminar will be at NO COST and complimentary refreshments provided.

The date, time and venue will be confirmed shortly, so please get in early and register your interest now, as seats will be on a strictly first come, first served basis. There will be a free draw and someone WILL win a week for 1 to 4 people in Spain (conditions apply). Paul FieldinG

for by means of commission and banks were generally only able to offer restricted advice, in that they sold the financial packages of only one provider. The option, as in the case of most banks, of turning to a website www.unbiased.co.uk isn’t one that is of comfort to everyone! We at Bartholomew Hawkins understand the value of the personal touch, of an experienced, highly trained, professional looking at your complete financial status and then helping you to make the right decision. Recently we were able to help with the financial arrangements for a new coffee outlet in Cardiff’s Castle Arcade. The Coffee Continental is due to open in June. She was having difficulty funding the new venture cost effectively as the original outlet was highly geared. We were able to help her access her pension fund and simultaneously help it to grow with income from the new business.

Esther is delighted and explained:”I just found Ian Davies of Bartholomew Hawkins trustworthy. He gave good advice and helped us out of a quandary. “He has facilitated a SIPP which is being used as a vehicle to fund the business. We are delighted not to have had to resort to a third party for finance and will be able to put money back into the pension.” The example is just one of a range of solutions we at Bartholomew Hawkins are able to provide as independent advisers. We are very highly trained and there is no commission bias, since we receive the same fee whichever provider we choose. We can also provide advice to Welsh speakers in their own language. There is some very interesting information on the internet where some people are telling of the benefits of coconut oil in reversing the effects of dementia and Alzheimer's. I can only take these people at their word but if what they are saying is true then it's worth trying if you are suffering from dementia or know someone who is. It's a natural product and does not cost a lot so use this link to see one of the stories: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=mMw3d3ohx_s If you want to buy a good quality oil then use this link, (I have no financial interest here!) www.credence.org

Spinal Healthbites: Allergy vs Tolerance

At this time of year we are all familiar with the symptoms of allergies, runny nose, streaming eyes, sneezing or rashes. But did you know that there are a number of other symptoms that are more subtle, taking longer to develop so that they are often no seen to be linked with an allergy at all. Allergies can sometimes be a cause of arthritic pain, migraine heads, skin problems and breathing problems. There is also increasing evidence that it could be the cause of hyperactivity in children. Our bodies are a complex mass of energies – in our cells, organs and the invisible energy

pathways called ‘meridians’. Everything around us has its own unique pattern of energy which interacts with us. If you are allergic to a substance it is because your body doesn’t recognise its energy pattern, so the flow of energy in your body becomes disturbed and unbalanced, producing symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing and digestion problems. You can be allergic to any substance and sometimes the most unlikely substances can be causing you difficulties. Chemicals in the workplace or at home can cause symptoms as can foods which you ‘crave’ particularly wheat and dairy. The good news is, if you think that you have an allergy or intolerance and want to know how to stop the symptoms naturally, call now to arrange your complimentary allergy test. Offer ends 30th May. Walk Wales for MND. One man's journey - 650 miles in 35 days!

Justin Hostettler-Davies, Bridgend is hoping to raise £5,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association by walking the coastal path along Wales come rain, sun or snow! He will walk 650 miles in 35 days starting in Prestatyn, North Wales on 12th July 2013 finishing at Porthcawl on 18th August 2013. Justin is carrying out this challenge after his lifelong friend was diagnosed with MND in October 2010 at just 36 years old. Five people a day die in the UK from MND. It is a rapidly

progressive, fatal disease that leaves people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves. The cause is unknown and there is no cure. Justin said: "I'm doing this challenge in the hope that it can raise much needed awareness of MND and the devastating impact it has on people and their families. Gareth is an amazing father to two young children but he won’t get to see his children grow up, go to university or get married." Monies raised will go directly to the set up of a new Care Network for MND patients across South Wales providing care and support for MND sufferers. Justin welcomes support from anyone wishing to join him at any stage of his walk. To donate, please go to www. walk4mnd.com or https:// www.justgiving.com/walkingwales4MND/ Follow Justin's progress on twitter - @WalkWales4MND Tracy Hayes

BUILDING

Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club

The month of May is named after Maia the Greek goddess of fertility and everything in the garden is growing vigorously now, including the weeds! Try to hoe them out at least once a week while they are small as they will compete with the plants for water and nutrients and might just win! Mid to late May is the best time to plant out summer bedding, a good rule of thumb is to

plant out in the afternoon just as the heat of the day is waning and for an important first few hours the roots can enjoy the warmth of the soil without the leaves being scorched by the sun! Try planting sweet peas with your runner beans, they smell lovely and help greatly with pollination, lots more lovely beans! Did you know most vegetables appreciate a drop of beer, brassicas are the real old soaks, cabbages in particular love a regular drink, at least they can’t come home singing rude songs and disturbing the neighbours! We have a talk on fuchsias on 28th May in the Community Hall, very informative and enjoyable hope to see you there. There’s one thing a good gardener can always grow – tired! ChRis eaRlY

easter time a Man & his dog Return home

I can no longer resist that strong feelings exist A bit like a dog wants his bone.

It's been many a year Since I felt this much cheer to be leaving my Great Big Adventure in the Red Land Downunder Where there's Lightning and Thunder (not to mention the heat & the beer)

Our destiny's cooked We're finally booked on that big BA bird in the sky I'll be up top But poor little pup Will be down in the hold waaagh, I'll cry…

But I wouldn't have missed it for quids, I'd be miffed if I'd departed before I was ready. But now, this is it, the ball, it's been hit, I'll tell you, it's all pretty heady. So, it's over for me I can honestly see that my roots are a'calling me home

But it won't be too long once we leave the mad throng and jetlag and travellers' tales, that we'll be home to Old Blighty Mark that, thee Almighty .. Man & Dog, reunited, in Wales. douG (and doG) RobeRts

Who says i'm old? They sent me a small state pension To let me know that I’ve grown old. They enclosed a heat allowance Cos old bones get extra cold. They issued me a bus pass (Old age travellers go for free!) With a small and wrinkly photo Of an OAP – that’s me! They sent me for free check-ups On my wobbly teeth and eyes (Us ancients have to eat and see To avoid a swift demise!) Next came a bowel screening kit A surprise I must confess. Thank God for those free eye tests Or I could have made a mess! Now I don’t feel old and past it Though they seem to rub it in So I’m going to spend my pension On Gigolos and Gin! A time for rejoicing; a time for love, A time for thanking our God above For what He gave on Easter Day: A gift to wash our sin away: The sin of ‘not knowing what we really do’ When we fail to acknowledge that His love is true: As true as the snowdrops that peep through the earth Declaring the miracle of Springtime’s new birth. As true as the birds serenading the dawn – Of a new day, a new hope…a new life is born! It’s a pity that man is ‘so hard to teach’ And happiness seems to be out of his reach. If he’ll just look before him on this special day At the crude Easter egg he sees on displayWhen stripped of its trimmings it’s hollow and bare Like man’s empty shell before ‘Love’ dwells there; But look at the natural egg that is laid, When nurtured with love it goes on parade! The shell that was brittle now has to be cracked For new life to emerge and a Love that’s in tact. RobeRta lovedaY Porthcawl

Miracle of life Within the bulb, so brown and bare A perfect flower is hidden Secure from rage that winters bring Till kissed by gentle breath of Spring Awakened now, it’s bidden To push its way to light of day And join earth’s celebration And deep within our hearts and home A precious life was hidden We’d nurture you within the womb Waiting your time to fully come With joy to know you’re bidden Our child of joy, of love and light, To join life’s celebration But He who plants the flower in bulb While in nut a tree is hidden Planned for this life a better way Than here to see the light of day For he to heaven was bidden Oh, there, with laughter, joy and praise He’ll dance with gladness all his days Fill full heaven’s celebration Oh Father heart, who feels our pain Whose own dear Son was given To come to us as precious seed Purposed to die, to meet our need And in our grief we’re bidden To know through death comes glorious life Death’s death our celebration Pauline leWis Porthcawl

The prize-winners will go forwards to a special county-wide event in Bryngarw House. For children we will be holding a very special Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Party on Wednesday 29th May in which characters from the story will be coming to Porthcawl to tell us their stories. stag’s world of rock Hi gang, hope you were all on the 66-1 Grand National winner last month? I backed one at twenty to one and it came in at ten past three. A big thanks for your calls and nice comments on my cameo role in 'Ghosts of Glamorgan' – check out the trailer on YouTube. Drummer Mark Jenkins from top Bridgend band 'The Blims' popped down for a chat and gave me a copy of their new EP 'Love Letters'. The band is on the up since their single 'Side Steps and Sideburns' hit

This month I would like to bring to your attention a collections-based exhibition: Pop and Abstract, which highlights the way the ‘Swinging Sixties’ transformed British art in the post-war period. It explores the way pop and abstraction was interpreted by artists based in Wales and features works by many of the most important artists in the modern collection housed at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. Have you ever wondered how

number one on the iTunes charts and had 170,000 YouTube hits. If you’re a fan of 'The Levellers' then you’ll love 'The Blims' with their Celtic folk rock style of music. The single 'Love Letters to Wales' and 'Rise with the Tide' are stand-out songs on a great album – can’t wait to catch them live! Another band to check out is 'The Riff', and don’t forget 'Bryn Rock Festival' is on Saturday 1st June. Finally, happy birthday (22nd May) to the 'Cover Sluts' and 'Abi and the Bomb’s' brilliant vocalist Abi Joseph. Keep your calls coming.

The long service of two of the choir’s members was recently recognised by the presentation of long service awards. Both had served the choir faithfully for 25 years, Neville Evans in the first bass section and Ed Fearnley as a second tenor. Neville is pictured receiving his award from the recently elected Chairman, Roy Bowen whilst Eddy received his from the choir's long serving President, Glan Davies. As a point of interest, both Roy and Glan are founder members of the choir. For the second time in two

years, the choir recently made a return visit to Somerset where, they gave a concert in the Parish Church of Norton Sub hampden followed by an afterglow at the village pub, the Admiral Lord Nelson. Both venues provided highly appreciative and supportive audiences. The following day the choir travelled to Orchard Leigh house in Frome where they sang at the wedding reception of Jemma Taylor who had earlier married Simon Forester. Jemma is a Porthcawl girl and much to the delight of the newlyweds, the choir sang a variety of traditional Welsh pieces as well as English. The Porthcawl guests at the reception expressed enthusiastic support for their choir. John WilliaMs

Now you can discover for yourself what effects they had on our home grown artists. Alongside Cezanne and Picasso you will discover works by John Piper, Ben Nicholson, David Nash, David Hockney, Bridget Riley, and Allen Jones, to name a few. See how abstract and pop art developed in Wales by visiting this exciting new exhibition at the museum. Also, allow yourself to be completely disorientated by a new installation from Cardiff-based artist Holly Davey. This space is now devoted to highlighting up and coming artists who live and work in Wales. The exhibition is on until 1st September. Ghosts of Glamorgan Regular Seaside News readers have already had bits of news about 'Ghosts of Glamorgan' in Stag’s World of Rock column, but now the DVD is out and proving very popular. It tells twelve true stories from all over Glamorgan, including ghostly goings-on at The Great House, Laleston, The Rest Hotel and Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl, and The Prince of Wales in Kenfig, where landlord Gareth Maund plays himself in an intriguing scene. The production used a large cast of local people as actors and extras, who had great fun doing it, and the leading roles were played by Bristol’s Oliver Purches, Londoner Sarah

Gunn who comes originally from South Wales and Emma Roberts from Tonyrefail. There were also cameo roles for rock star Stag Marks, who has kept Seaside News readers informed of his participation, together with Daz and Abi Joseph and Ed Rees from pop band ‘The Fabulous Cover Sluts’, also known as ‘Abi And The Bomb’. A 'Ghosts of Glamorgan' trailer and cast interviews appear on YouTube, and the film is now available on DVD at £9.95. Because some of the scenes contain quite graphic reconstructions of the sudden deaths that caused the ghostly apparitions to appear, the film is rated '12'. and under category picked to go through to the next round. They performed a mash up of two songs, with Katie singing whilst Rhys played the piano and rapped. They will now perform at the area finals in Reading on 19th May, and if successful they will then compete in the Grand Final at London’s O2 arena in July. If you would like to know whether they are selected for the Grand Final in London, please check their website KatieRhys.com The website also has a video of their Cardiff performance. Steve Lloyd

www.seasidenewsdirectory.co.uk

Lexi Richmond, better known as her stage name Ahnuh Valentine from Broadlands, Bridgend, is now just one step away from singing within the O2 arena in London after impressing the Teenstar judges in the regional final at the Coal Exchange Cardiff. Lexi aged 17 has now made it through to the Area Finals, so is one good performance away from playing within one of the greatest live music venues in the world! Teenstar is a competition showcasing national talent for teens and pre-teens which

searches for the best singers, song writers, rappers and vocalists of all genres. Lexi/Ahnuh, impressed the judges so far in the regional final showcase recently after having got through the initial audition. More than 9,000 hopefuls entered Teenstar in its first year and now Lexi is amongst the last few acts competing for a place at the Grand Final within the O2. Lexi is a local student studying Travel and Tourism at Bridgend College and bases her performances on her idol Lana Del Rey. Lexi has been a performer for 10 years after being a dedicated student at Stagecoach Performing Arts School. "I'm lucky to reach the final alone, and will be even luckier if I win it! First thing I'll do is buy some Louboutins" says Lexi, who is hoping to become one of Bridgend's rising stars. Thank you again, Lexi. Steve Richmond

Porthcawl buckaneers Carnival saturday 20th July Planning the carnival is upon us once again. The theme for this year is ‘TV shows’ and we have had a few new entries for floats this year. If you want to become involved please contact us. This is a local event for the enjoyment of the community of Porthcawl. In addition it provides opportunities for local charities and good causes to raise much needed funds. As Buckaneers the funds we raise are donated to the community. silures As many of you know Silures Gallery in South Road has grown from strength to strength in the quality and professionalism of its exhibitions since it was first established in 1996. It is one of the few 'amateur' galleries in Glamorgan which has a monthly turnover of artists and which also displays the work of guest artists and local schools’ talents. However this month the group is treading new ground with an

Fundraisers get quizzical with phenomenal success Punters turned out in force at the Fairways Hotel, Porthcawl recently, for a meal and quiz evening to raise funds for Spectrum, a local support group for people with Asperger Syndrome. The evening got underway at 7pm, with what must have been a new food experience for many – a spicy Georgian stew known as Sousi. The hotel dining room then filled to capacity for the quiz. Each of the twenty artists in the group have contributed a work of art to the exhibition and the full price of any picture purchased will be sent to the charity of the purchaser’s choice. If you like the idea and have an interest in art why not visit our gallery in South Road? The exhibition will be held @ Silures Gallery, 40 South Road, Porthcawl CF36 3DG from Saturday 4th May 2013 to Sunday 26th May 2013. Open 11am to 4.30pm weekends. sandRa Wintle

bers were absolutely delighted to find that raffle, quiz and meal raised a total of £250, which the group will now use for purchase of literature and the continued running of its Information Point at Porthcawl Y Centre. Spectrum’s Trustees would like to extend their warmest thanks to the staff of the Fairways Hotel, all local traders who displayed posters and/or donated raffle prizes and, most of all, to the generous local public who turned out in force to support the event. We would also like to thank Ben for organising the event for us. ben FieldinG

Porthcawl lifeguards Club Pyle and Kenfig honours two stalwarts

There was a full turn out at a recent dinner in the clubhouse to honour two gentlemen who have served the club at various levels over many years. Mel Jones, is a former club captain and was a trustee between 2006 and 2010. He has held many roles within the veterans, including captain and president. Brian Williams is very well known in the area as for many

tim velinmanjaro After nearly three years of fundraising culminating in 'the Climb' itself Tim Velinmanjaro have hung up their walking boots. In the Hi Tide recently, we had great pleasure in presenting Andrew Morris, head of fundraising for Velindre with our cheque. We held the event as a big thank you to all those who have supported us throughout the whole process. The night was a great success with family and friends treated to a presentation about the climb, followed by the cheque presentation and a Tom Jones tribute act and disco. years he was, one of those rare creatures, a popular bank manager. He was club treasurer for three years. He has served the veterans well in various roles. On the golf course, he won a Mixed Open when by his own admission, he was carried by his wife. Both regaled us with many humorous stories of past events in the club. Wearing my investigative journalist hat, I tried to find evidence of any misdemeanors by either of these gentlemen but none was to be found. All reports substantiated the claim that their behavior has been impeccable! Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club welcomes all golfers. The free draining course is open when many others are closed. JaCK MCKee

to Velindre. During an earlier meeting in Velindre Cancer Hospital with Andrew and the head of nursing it was decided how Velindre would spend the money. The money will be used to buy individual TV/ DVD combis plus laptops and tablets for each of the 31 beds in the long stay ward. This will allow those having treatment to relieve the boredom and keep in contact with family and friends, as many patients are kept in isolation during their stay. Once again a HUGE THANK YOU to all our family, friends and local businesses who supported us by donating their time, money and services. louise PiPeR-Jones

On Sunday 23rd June two of our senior members Matt Higginson and Dave Carson are doing a 63 mile run for charity with all the proceeds going to Help The Heroes. This mammoth run will start at 4.30am at Whitmore Bay, Barry and will take the guys approximately 17 hours to run to Caswell Bay in the Gower. They are aiming to drop into as many lifeguard stations as possible while they undertake their coastal run and aim to pit stop down Rest Bay, Porthcawl at approximately 4pm so please look out for them and support them. If you fancy joining the guys on a 5k leg of

Porthcawl Runners It was good news all round as we eagerly awaited the results for the final league standings of the West Glamorgan cross country league. Both men’s teams started the day in relegation places but some sterling performances in tough conditions were rewarded with both teams climbing to safety in their respective divisions. Great team spirit and the camaraderie between local clubs make this event the highlight of the winter season. The Porthcawl Parkrun has got off to a very successful start with over 130 runners from all over South Wales turning up to

their journey then please email Matt.Higgy@BTInternet.com as I am sure they will be glad of the company. This gruelling run means the guys are doing more than two marathons back to back in the same day all for charity so if you can donate any amount, however small then please visit their Just Giving web page www. Justgiving.com/MatthewHigginson1 The club are very proud of what Matt and Dave are undertaking and we will be supporting them with a road team and also club members running with them for periods of time along the way, good luck guys. Don't forget the club is always looking for new members so if you fancy joining us then please email Penny John our club secretary at secplgc@ hotmail.com Hope to see you down the beach when summer arrives! dave davies

support the event. Chris Jenkins was 4th in the first run in a time of 17:38. Angela Walsh recorded PBs at the first two runs and it is already evident how addictive the Parkrun event is going to be, judging by the number of runners who returned the following week. All at Porthcawl Runners would like to take the opportunity to wish Cornelly Strider David Hesketh a speedy recovery from his recent accident. David was involved in a nasty collision with a van whilst out running and suffered injuries to both his legs. David we hope to see you back in action as soon as possible. anthonY PhilliPs
