Re: student appeal Dear Editor, I have had great feedback from my appeal advertised in the Seaside News last month. A big thank you goes to Mr Dykes at Porthcawl Comprehensive School for offering the use of their sixth form hall as a venue for my concert which is scheduled for 24th April with the time yet to be confirmed. Tickets will be £5 each which can either be bought in advance by calling my home number on 01656 783906 or on the door. I plan to play such pieces as The Swan from Carnival of

Through Christian Eyes book Dear Editor, It may interest the readers of the Seaside News to hear that regular correspondent Neil Harvey who writes ‘Through Christian Eyes’ has just published his first book. It is entitled ‘Uncaged’, and it tells his personal story of how Neil, a local bad boy, was made good by Jesus Christ. Neil was previously a drug dealer and user, and a violent criminal, who suddenly had a personal spiritual encounter with Jesus while in prison that has changed his life forever. It is a

the Animals by Saint-Saens, Humoresque by Dvorak, Libertango by Piazzola which has recently been used in a couple of adverts and Pachelbel’s Cannon among other things. I am taking this opportunity of inviting a couple of my younger musical colleagues to take part and give them the experience of performance. I would like to thank my piano teacher Liz Dewhurst for offering up many hours of her time in advance to learn the repertoire and accompany me on the night. I have also had an email from the male voice choir encouraging me to apply for their annual bursary given to students who are going on to study music in an established university. If it hadn’t been for the Seaside News publishing my article I would have had no knowledge that this bursary existed. I would also like to thank Colin Williams and a lady from the Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild for their ideas and encouragement. Thank you Seaside News! HANNAH THOMAS

tremendous encouragement to those who may find that they themselves, or one of their family members, are struggling with addictive behaviour. It shows that there is hope for everyone and that people can change for the better. God never gives up on anyone. Copies are available from Neil at his website: neilchristianharvey. com, or from myself at Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl (just leave a contact name and number on our church answer phone 01656 785046). Neil’s book is for sale at £7 per copy but if someone finds that genuinely beyond their means I would be happy to make up the cost for them. REV. MARTIN GILLARD

Dear Editor, I am writing in defence of decent law abiding hoodie wearing teenagers. My son is nearly 18 and loves wearing his hoodie, apart from one thing. It seems that any time he goes into a shop wearing his hoodie he is constantly followed around by security, yet he can go into the very same shop wearing his leather jacket and no-one seems to bother him. Whilst I appreciate that some hoodie wearing kids are “up to no good” they shouldn’t all be tarred with the same brush. Would security follow old ladies wearing hoods? No I think not.

Active councillors Dear Editor, Once again council elections are to the fore and let’s hope the candidates do not make sweeping promises and pledges that they cannot fulfil. Perhaps the candidates could give their views on the following three items and what action they would take. 1. It is said that the sale of Porthcawl land – Hillsboro car park, Salt Lake and Sandy Bay for building plots would fetch an estimated sum in the region of £100 million. BCBC refused to ringfence this money to be used for the sole purpose of Porthcawl. In other words, they could use this money to upgrade leisure facilities and projects in other areas of the borough. The farcical situation is that if BCBC so wished, Porthcawl could get practically nothing, which would be an utter disgrace. 2. The need to reopen the road connecting South Road/John Street and Station Hill/New Road for the reason previously given. 3. With the reorganising of the hospitals it is essential that a bus service is provided

From my experience during my time as a police officer I had to deal with far more old lady shoplifters than I did teenage ones. So please don’t stereotype all these kids, the majority of them are decent well brought up teenagers just out enjoying themselves. CATH HAYWOOD

Porthcawl

from Porthcawl to Morriston Hospital, especially for those people visiting the hospital in the evening. The bus could be arranged to tie in with the visiting times to and from the hospital. The residents of Cornelly, Pyle and Kenfig Hill could also take advantage of this service. There are some people who are concerned with the bad decisions made by the council in the distant past, but it is paramount and vital that the correct decisions are made now and with the regeneration saga ongoing that is why we can no longer have the pleasure as in the past, whereby some councillors and MPs were non-existent and were not interested or involved in the affairs of Porthcawl. Porthcawl is a wonderful place and a town to be proud of but unfortunately we suffer from the lack of leisure facilities and this is a humble request to BCBC to place Porthcawl on a par with the other areas of the borough. Good luck to all the candidates competing in the forthcoming council elections. JOHN JENKINS

Kenfig.org article Dear Editor, I am writing to complain about a feature in the March issue of the Seaside News. The feature in question is by Rob Bowen of kenfig.org. uk in support of his website; a website that has plagiarised our copyrighted material on a regular basis. I appreciate and respect that you have the right to decide the content of your magazine, nevertheless I feel that I cannot let this feature pass without comment. The issue of Rob Bowen’s plagiarism has been raised by us with a number of his ‘sponsors’.

Promises Dear Editor, 14 months ago the people of Newton elected me to our town council. I didn’t promise to change the world. I promised to bring energy, challenge and fresh thinking. That hasn’t been easy, yet I can count some successes, as detailed in my letter to Seaside News in January. I am standing for re-election on May 3rd because I have had genuine support from people from all walks of life. The common bond is the desire to see an end to the decline of our wonderful town. People want to see civic pride restored, and councillors taking positive action on basic issues like clean streets, clean beaches and safe walking routes. People want to see positive, energetic, committed councillors who will listen to their concerns and act upon them. Townsfolk are tired of the same old people making the

In turn, his ‘sponsors’ have informed us that they do not support his website and that he is using their names, logos etc without permission. This misuse of official names and logos is now the subject of a number of inquiries being held by the Welsh Government, the National Library of Wales and the Trading Standards Authority. I trust that you will understand the nature of our complaint and the fact that we felt compelled to bring this matter to your attention. DANIELA JONES

same old promises, and then failing to deliver, so let’s look at what was said in 2008. These are direct quotes from 2008 leaflets: The Conservatives said they would ”Increase the number of wardens empowered to issue fixed penalties for dog fouling and littering in conjunction with BCBC” and “address the issue of ‘speed humps’ in New Road”. Labour said they would “Double the number of Dog and Litter Wardens” and “keep weekly bin collections”. Readers can decide which promises were kept. The usual suspects, many of whom are standing again for re-election, have had years to deliver against the basics. Yet we see neglect, dirty streets, and the gradual decline of our once wonderful surroundings. This must not be allowed to continue, and if re-elected I will do my very best to bring change. Developments at the Rest Hotel Dear Editor, I understand that this planning application has been put on hold to review, in particular, the issue of the preservation of some of the features which cause The Rest to be a listed building of unique character. It strikes me that these eleventh hour problems could be jointly resolved if the developers were to allow some portion of the old building to remain available to the public; in this way architectural features could be seen in context and some of the community use enabled to continue. Perhaps the entrance, ‘boardroom’, some portion of corridor, a lounge and balcony room (former dormitory) would achieve this. Such a corner could be given to the council, or representatives

Porthcawl First Dear Editor, Porthcawl First is a group formed to provide a voice for local people who want to see our town develop into a prosperous, vibrant and forward looking community, where local residents and businesses can enjoy our heritage and natural amenities. The group evolved from a Facebook campaign, which called for an open and transparent approach to regeneration in Porthcawl. That campaign has now broadened its objectives to encompass the wider views of ordinary people in Porthcawl. We want to encourage independent candidates in this May’s town and borough elections, so that councillors act in

of The Rest and some of the organisations currently using it could set up and run a small part of this iconic landmark of our town. As one of the board which agreed to hand The Rest to a private developer I am not proud that it should be completely lost to the community but our responsibility was to continue providing holidays and respite to those in need: the new building will achieve this in ways the old one no longer could. We chose the present developer as an hotelier whose original plans would have allowed some public use, and we have been sorry to see this lost. However we would all like to think that our history and relations with the town should not be entirely lost and the scheme outlined would achieve this. ANDREW COLLIER

the best interests of the town, freely and independently from any party political agenda. We have spoken to many local people who have told us they are fed up with having their views ignored, and annoyed when party politics prevents developments that are in the best interests of local people and the town. Porthcawl First is not a political party, charity or a business. It is an umbrella organisation, formed to encourage people to work together, free from political bias, and for the good of Porthcawl. We will keep you informed as our campaign develops and look forward to your support. E JOHN HOWLEY

Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School West Park Primary School St David’s Day was celebrated in style by all at West Park. An eisteddfod was held where pupils recited, sung and participated in plays in Welsh. The day was made complete with the arrival of the Porthcawl Male Voice Choir who sung beautifully. Thank you so much. Pupils from Year 3 have had the opportunity to experience tri-golf with the support of Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club. The pupils have returned to class enthusiastic after the sessions! Year 4 pupils are about to commence on a cricket course with the support of A Chance to Shine. This will provide the children with the experience of batting, bowling and fielding. Year 6 pupils are receiving training sessions from the Ospreys to develop their move-

They came third and now head for the next competition in Nottingham. Pob lwc merched! A ‘twmpath’ [folk dance] held at the school to celebrate St David’s Day was very successful and enjoyed by dancers of all ages! Many thanks to Ceri and Jo from Dawnswyr Pen-yfai who “called” and accompanied the dances . We hope to repeat the twmpath in the summer and hold a barbecue

We would like to say a big thank you to Mr Ted Clarke and Mrs Tina Guttridge. Year 2 have set up The Learning Café after school on a Tuesday to promote collaborative reading. It is with great sadness that we must report the passing of a truly gifted member of our staff. Miss Judith Rosenfeld had heroically battled severe illness for many years and on 22nd February she tragically passed away. Miss Rosenfeld had taught at West Park Primary School for 12 years and her expertise and enthusiasm had empowered our pupils in so many ways. at the same time. St David’s Day celebrations continued on March 1st when the school eisteddfod was its usual success and enjoyed by all…but especially by members of Ogwr who came first in the house competition. The winner of the ‘Gadair’, the high profile poetry competition, was Bethan Chappell. Llongyfarchiadau! Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger played an active role in the Cwlwm Celtaidd, the Celtic folk festival held recently at the Pavilion. We welcomed a group of folk dancers from the Isle of Man who performed for the whole school in the hall and the choir sang on the Pavilion stage on the Sunday March 4th. JOHN MASON

Following a very successful inspection, Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School achieved the ‘Basic Skills Quality Standard’ mark. This year’s annual eisteddfod was a huge success. Our talented young stars were able to display their talent through poetry, instrumentals, singing, dance and many off-stage competitions. The support from individuals and groups was fantastic to watch as they battled for their houses to win. Congratulations to all in Teilo. Yasmin Chan from Teilo winning the Eisteddfod Chair for her poem ‘Fy Hoff Le’ (My Favourite Place).

Eisteddfod success at St John’s School! School events last month included our annual eisteddfod held in the school’s Crampton Hall and complemented by a delicious Welsh lunch served in the dining room. A highlights concert was also held for families and friends. Pupils of all ages took part in the festival, beginning with the nursery children who sang in Welsh through to the pre-prep classes singing and performing some dramas, then onto the prep and senior boys and girls who performed in Welsh, French, German and English - a truly multi-lingual day! Little Footsteps Easter is here. We love Easter, planning lots of egg hunts and admiring the beautiful bonnets that our parents so kindly make with the children. We’ll post pictures next month of the children in their bonnets. Hope you all got to see our children in the Gazette supplement; they all looked lovely in their little Welsh costumes. We had a wonderful day celebrating St David’s Day and eating homemade cawl and Welsh cakes for lunch which the preschool children helped to make. We have more exciting staff news and are adding to the baby boom of Little Footsteps. As we welcome back three

members of staff after their maternity leave, another one is enjoying her rest before baby comes and another two have recently shared their wonderful news that they are expecting early autumn. If this carries on we may have to open a nursery just for our staff babies! Don’t forget our holiday club for Easter. We have lots planned: junk modelling, Easter egg hunts at Margam and Bryngarw Park, Easter cooking treats and trips out to the beach exploring rock pools. Newton Primary How busy has March been?! Firstly, congratulations to Anna Biju and Jacob Atherton (Year 6) for representing Newton in the Library Quiz and for coming first! We are immensely proud of them especially as they only dropped one point – well done, you two. We all enjoyed our St. David’s celebrations with every class performing a special item and we give congratulations to Marcus Fish of Year 6 who was chaired Bard for his very entertaining story based on a Welsh wizard. We also held a very successful Book Fair – thanks to all our

St Clare’s March has been a wonderful month. In the Prep School, many of our pupils have been enjoying cross country, and have taken part in the Bridgend primary schools’ cross country races. We’ve played netball and rugby matches against a variety of schools and have had our fair share of success! Within the Senior School, pupils Dafydd Skelton and Matthew Pottage performed admirably in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, our Young Enterprise Team ‘The Beach Hut’ have been busy pulling together business plans (as well as getting creative with drift-

Very many congratulations go to Patrick Coleman and Katie Pickett on their outstanding performance in the Porthcawl Library Book Quiz held recently. Patrick and Katie have been selected to represent Porthcawl in the regional heats. As part of our support for the Cwlwm Celtaidd Festival we were

parents for supporting us, and you should have seen the costumes on World Book Day! There was Mr Gandalf Jenkins, a very sweet Mary Poppins and our own Miss Davies who made a superb Action Man. The Bike-It committee have been kept busy organising the Big Pedal days which are proving to be very successful and Year 5, not content with working with CCFC Education Dept, went off to Bridgend for a day of Olympic sports. You have to admit, life in Newton is certainly exciting! Best wishes for a happy, blessed Easter. GILL GORE www.newtonprimary. bridgend.gov.uk

A busy month for all, topped off by a magnificent performance by Senior School pupils in their first school musical, Centuries of Sound, written, produced and performed by the students themselves! We were delighted to welcome pupils from local primary school to watch two matinee performances and only hope they enjoyed it as much as we did! JOHN AGUILAR

Headteacher 01656 782509 delighted to host the Perree Bane Dancers from the Isle of Man. They worked with all classes showing children their unique style of traditional dances. This coincided with our St David’s Day celebrations where children were invited to take part in art, craft, technology and writing competitions. It has also been a delight to have Paulina Lopez from Chile visit the school. Paulina has now learnt some Welsh and our children have learnt some Spanish! ANDREW WOOD Headteacher

VOTE!

Children & young people With council elections just around the corner, my message this month is aimed at all the first time voters: please vote and encourage your friends to as well! This is a chance for you to influence who represents you on Bridgend County Borough Council as well as your town and community councils for the next four years. You might not realise it but local government affects every aspect of your life so it’s really important that you use your vote. You can check you’re registered to vote by contacting Bridgend County Borough Council’s electoral team on 01656 643116 or emailing electoral@bridgend.gov.uk. The deadline for applying

The Burrows During March, we were very proud that our children raised over £200 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Back in November, they planted daffodil bulbs and over the last few months, we have watched them grow into pretty flowers. The children then decorated pots for the daffodils and took them home. We also took part in Sport Relief on 23rd March, with the children participating in fun activities, raising money for another good cause. Our trip to The Gruffalo in the Swansea Grand Theatre proved to be a success and great fun for both the staff and children. We are eagerly wait-

to be on the register is 18th April (which is also the cut off date for anyone applying for a postal vote). Then, on 3rd May, you have between 7am and 10pm to visit your designated polling station. It’s a really simple process. Remember, many people across the world are still denied the right to vote and many have died fighting to be part of a democracy. I hope you get the same feeling of making a difference that I get every time I use my vote. So have your say on 3rd May. CLLR ALANA DAVIES

The inside of the nursery has had a transformation; it’s now time for our outside space to have a facelift. We have a few trips planned including the lifeboat station and St Fagan’s. Diane from Porthcawl Library is coming to the nursery for story time and Marie John the dental hygienist is making a return visit. Bridgend Christian School

Our recent FRIDAY FUNdraising evening was a great success. It raised over £500 for students to attend the European Student Convention 2012 to be held over the Easter period at Millfield School in Somerset (one of the training venues for the 2012 Olympics). European Student Convention is an event like no other – one of the annual highlights of the National Christian Student Calendar bringing together some 350 Christian students from Wales, England and other European countries who compete in over 200 different activities during four action-packed days.

Porthcawl Comprehensive The school has held a very successful eisteddfod in the Pavilion on 9th March. The whole school participated; senior school for the morning session and juniors for the afternoon. The whole event was an extravaganza of young talent in traditional and non traditional competitions. At the end of the day the following results were arrived at: Overall Eisteddfod: 1st – Morgannwg 762; 2nd – Powys 739; 3rd – Dyfed 544; 4th – Gwynedd 522 Choir competition: 1st - Morgannwg; 2nd – Gwynedd; joint 3rd – Powys/ Dyfed Junior Eisteddfod Champion: 1st – Anna Arrietta (Dyfed)

Fairtrade dance! In a special assembly, the children of Class 5 told us all about Fairtrade and their parents stayed to enjoy some Fairtrade refreshments and to help design a Fairtrade footprint poster. The message of the day was

an important one but this was heard in a fun and exciting way that was enjoyed by everyone.

The FRIDAY FUNdraising evening, which included a number of on stage convention performances from the participating students, also increased awareness of the school among the local residents who “have always wanted to visit the school” to quote one couple. Both of whom, being very committed to education, have now offered their services to the school. For those of you who have recently passed the school, whilst travelling along High Street in Laleston, you may have noticed a large banner draped across the front of the building with the mission statement “Here to Educate Your Children” and the message “Enrolling Now!” Take your first step today by visiting BridgendChristianSchool.co.uk.

the school is proud of its 100% pass rate and consistently high results. Students have recently performed at the Wales Millennium Centre, and Her Majesty’s Theatre, London. In April, they will be in concert at St David’s Hall in aid of Breast Cancer Care Cymru. Some students harbour ambitions for a performing arts career and a few go on to achieve that goal, but most children come to class for the sheer love of it. Stagecoach welcomes everyone, so get onboard and enrol today for the new term! For more information visit www.stagecoach. co.uk or call 01446 781454.

We now have an opportunity

to change all of that after I won a ballot to amend the law so as to provide better protection for Park Home owners. I will use this chance to regulate more fairly the process by which residential caravans and mobile homes are managed and sold in Wales. I would like your input into this process. food, clothing and other daily items. It has been calculated that the humble cup of tea requires 35 litres! Dunk a basic biscuit in your drink and you add a further 300 litres. This year, World Water Day on 22nd March, seeks to raise awareness of water and food security. Few people probably realise how much water is needed to produce what many of us take

for granted. It becomes far more serious if you consider the impact of drought on food supplies, competition over scarce water resources has the potential in the future to lead to conflict and by 2025, 1.8 billion people will be faced with absolute water scarcity. Without a greater understanding of how we rely on water, we may find ourselves ration-

ing more than just our daily cuppas. More information on World Water Day can be found at http://www.unwater.org/ worldwaterday/

the concerns that users have that this might increase costs in the way they have in neighbouring Neath Port Talbot, Lyn Morgan, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, chose instead to take potshots at some unspecified “cheap political remarks” over privatisation. But Cllr Morgan also produced a howler by dismissing concerns about rising prices, saying they would not rise above inflation. He made his com-

ment at a time when inflation currently sits at 5%, its highest for some time - and it shows signs of falling only slightly in 2012. Not even his own colleagues back him up, with deputy leader Dave Sage saying afterwards that above-inflation rises could be agreed with the council. Either way, it all points to price rises – something that users at Bridgend Recreation Centre, Garw Valley Leisure

Centre, Maesteg Sports Centre, Maesteg Swimming Pool, Ogmore Valley Life Centre, Pencoed Swimming Pool, Pyle Swimming Pool and Ynysawdre Pool and Fitness Club specifically did not want.

aged to get an order through parliament giving them the right to run this railway and have negotiated a lease for the track from Brynmenyn to Pontycymer. They have also built a loco shed and their next move is to start relaying the track and provide a platform and station at the Pontycymer terminus. As Shadow Minister for

Transport and Regeneration, this scheme ticks all the boxes for me. Tourism generated by railways is massive and I am sure that once this line is operating, thousands of visitors will be drawn to the valley, bringing income and trade for businesses. This project could be the catalyst needed to get things moving. And I am particularly de-

lighted to see that the group has set up an engineering apprenticeship scheme which will introduce young people into this field and perhaps seek a career with the railways.

Remploy The recent announcement from the UK Government to close seven Remploy factories in Wales including the Bridgend Remploy is disappointing and deeply upsetting for disabled people employed in the factories. This is the latest hit to disabled people as part of the UK Government’s welfare reform.

Llys Ton opening I felt honoured to be part of the official opening of the new £5m Llys Ton Extra Care facility in Kenfig Hill last month. This very impressive, purposebuilt complex has been developed by BCBC with V2C and offers high-quality apartments for up to 70 tenants. We are proud to have delivered our first extra care scheme and I like the fact that there is such a strong emphasis

Council Tax freeze It’s never nice to receive a bill but I hope that Bridgend County Borough Council’s decision to freeze the coming year’s council tax will make a small difference to Seaside News readers. As the Cabinet Member for Resources I can tell you the Labour administration thought

Mayoral message Hello everyone! I am delighted to be home! As you are probably aware, I was unable to attend events in January and February because, after the car accident, I was in hospital for a month, and then in recovery. My sincere apologies to all the organisations, groups, clubs and individuals whose functions I had been invited to but unfortunately could not attend.

20 www.seasidenews.co.uk

I met a number of Remploy workers at a recent event held in the Senedd, where I spoke about the importance of fighting for a secure future for the factories and for the disabled workers who are anxious to keep their jobs. The UK Government has refused to meet the requests of the Welsh Government to devolve the funding of the factories to Wales to enable

us to find a way forward in supporting the sustainability of the factories. However, the Welsh Government is looking into options for saving the factories, including developing social enterprises. Whilst ideally, disabled people should have equal opportunity and access to work anywhere they aspire to, in such difficult economic times this is not a reality, and the timing of the

factory closures is appalling. There are not enough local jobs in Bridgend to move all of the Remploy workers to, inevitably forcing people out of work and onto benefits. I will be supporting my constituents in the Bridgend Remploy in their fight for a secure future.

on choice and independence for tenants. The care is very flexible and for the first time in the county borough, couples who wish to remain living together once one partner’s needs have changed can do so. Imagine just what that means to a couple who have spent a lifetime together. I believe that schemes like Llys Ton are the future. From new buildings to old now: readers might be interested to know that BCBC has sold its former Coed Parc library

headquarters to Wales and West Housing Association. Any restoration and repairs will, of course, respect the character and setting of this lovely old building. And don’t forget our popular reference and information service has been relocated to nearby Ty’r Ardd and offers

modern facilities, ample car parking and a more central location.

long and hard before deciding to keep council tax at last year’s rates. We know we need to keep investing in our frontline services and protecting the vulnerable; but at the same time we want to look after the hard-pressed households who are juggling rising food and fuel bills at a time when everything seems to be costing more. We’re always looking at where we can make manageable ef-

ficiencies and where we need to give extra support. The good news is that as well as being able to freeze council tax this year, we have set aside vital funding for services which help young and old. That’s as well as things you might associate more readily with the council such as street lights and improvements to roads. I like to think we’ve got the balance right over the last four

years at BCBC which means we can pass this good news on to you.

I hope to see you all in the next few months before my Mayoral year has ended. Since returning home, my husband and I have attended the ‘Grace’s Gift’ charity evening in the Hi-Tide. It was extremely successful and raised hundreds of pounds. We also attended the event at Porthcawl Bandstand which was held to raise awareness of Porthcawl Fairtrade Town Partnership. Despite the horrendous weather, there was a very good crowd

present. As a member of the Grand Pavilion Advisory Group, the meeting I attended, once again reminded me how hard the staff and management work and how well the Grand Pavilion is doing. This was excellent news! We spent a wonderful evening as guests of the Porthcawl Lions Club at their Charter Night in the Atlantic. It was a real privilege to be there. The Eisteddfod Highlights

Concert, held by St John’s School, showed what fantastic talents and skills the children and young people of Porthcawl have. I am sure the school and their parents were very proud of them. Well done to them all! We presented flowers to Ann Jones, a resident at Breaksea Residential Home. It was her 103rd birthday. What an achievement! She is a true inspiration to us all.

The March meeting of Sker WI was held recently at St David’s Church hall, Nottage. The president Nina Charlesworth welcomed the members present and read out a list of forthcoming events. The speaker for the evening was Mr Terry Walton who gave a very interesting and amusing talk on ‘Life as a Media Gardner’. He has been interested in gardening since an early age and had his first allotment at 11 years old and by the age of 14 had 10 allotments. Since then he has become a regular on Radio 2’s Jeremy

The President Pat Williams welcomed members to the Welsh themed March meeting and began with an account of the events which had taken place during February. A team from Kenfig WI had taken part in the Federation Darts Tournament on the 18th. Fourteen teams had played a round-robin contest with EfailIsaf being the overall winners. On the 23rd members and guests had attended the annual ‘Fish and Chip Supper’ at the Cornelly Community Hall. The delicious food had been delivered by Beales Fish and Chip

Vine show, which often has 6.5 million listeners. Mr Walton has also been involved with the Coal House series, the Chelsea Flower Show and Gardeners’ Question Time. When not on the radio he is kept busy with his allotment, which is quite large, and provides his family with all the vegetables they need for the year. Mr Walton also showed some pictures of his own garden which was a mass of colour and really nicely done. Shop. They were entertained to an amusing interlude ‘An Evening Remembering the Wireless’, by the Porthcawl U3A play-reading group under the direction of Elizabeth Summer. Extracts from Oscar Wilde and Frank Vickery were humourously performed. The Welsh Evening then confirmed with the presentation of a cheque to Mr John Prosser of the Motor Neurone Disease Association towards the Jackie Jenkins Tribute Fund. Afterwards, the festivities began with the serving, by the committee in full Welsh dress, of bowls of steaming Welsh cawl made by our own Muriel Stubbs followed by scrumptious Welsh cakes. The celebrations ended with a quiz, on Wales of course, which was won convincingly by Jean David and her table. Diolch yn fawr to all who helped make the evening such a great success. RUTH TATCHELL

This spring marks the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War. In 1982, the battle to recapture the Falkland Islands cost 255 British lives. It is a conflict that remains in the minds of the soldiers, sailors and airmen who were involved. All remember their comrades who didn’t return, but for some the memories have become too painful. It is a tragic fact that more Falklands’ veterans have taken their own lives since the war than died during the conflict itself. As we remember the bravery of all those who fought in the Falklands, we should also

remember that the scars of war can be both physical and mental and often remain long after a conflict is over. Even the daily pressures of life in our Forces can bring additional stresses and problems for individuals and their families. Last year alone, the Mid Glamorgan branch of the military charity SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) Forces Help assisted 174 members of the Forces community in the area including veterans of all ages. We are here for them and their dependants, whether their problems have been caused by the conflict or not. If you or someone you know have ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force then SSAFA Forces Help Mid Glamorgan Branch is here to provide practical, emotional or financial support.

Children were a large part of the labour market in the 18th century and, when they were old enough, they were sent out to work to supplement the family income. For many families education was not a priority and this was recognised by the authorities who set up a number of charity and trust schools. These schools met in the winter to allow the children to tend the fields during the rest of the year. In 1675 a Welsh trust school was set up at Kenfig and the school was attended by twenty pupils. Unfortunately, for a predominantly Welsh speaking area, the language used for teaching was English, so placing a barrier between the children and their desire for knowledge.

The trust school was mentioned again in 1678, but it closed when the founder of the trust, the Rev. Thomas Gouge, died in 1681. The charity and the trust schools based their education on Christianity and lessons were usually confined to reading the Bible. Between 1739 and 1767 schools were held at Kenfig Guildhall, at Heol-y-Sheet and in Pyle attracting an average of thirty pupils. The classes were run by the Welsh Circulating Charity School and the lessons were held in Welsh, which proved to be more successful than the earlier English language classes. In the evenings adults attended the schools, attracted by the religious aspect of the teaching and by the prospect of bettering themselves. MANSEL JONES

Healing the Wounds Welsh charity Healing the Wounds is raising a glass to the pub committee and regulars of New House Inn, North Cornelly, for their fundraising efforts throughout 2011. The committee, along with the staff and locals raised money for various local charities including £150 for Healing the Wounds, the charity for Welsh veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Founders Kevin and Carol Richards attended the New House Inn for a presentation and entertainment evening on Sunday 4th March to accept the £150 cheque from Steve and Jeanette Williams. Kevin Richards, founder of

The ‘habitable zone’ Astronomers become excited when they find an extraterrestrial planet within the ‘habitable zone’ of a planetary system. The term refers to the band of orbits where the temperature of a body should allow liquid water to exist on the surface. However, the reference to ‘habitability’ appears to be a ruse to persuade people in general, and perhaps funding agencies in particular, to believe that the discovery of such a body brings very near the discovery of ‘little green men’. The fact is that there is much

26 www.seasidenews.co.uk

more to habitability than mere temperature. If anyone lived on Alpha Centauri they would probably consider Venus, the Moon and Mars to be in the Sun’s ‘habitable zone’, but living as we do nearer at hand we can see that neither Venus nor the Moon would be likely to represent pleasant abodes even for little green men. There has to be, around all stars, an area where the basic temperature would permit liquid water. At the surface of the star it is too hot and in the far distance of the star’s influence it is too cold, so somewhere in between it must be ‘just right’. CLIVE DOWN

Follow Save Morfa Beach (Friends of Morfa) on Facebook for further details of activities, or come to a meeting. We meet on the first Monday of each month at the Twelve Knights Hotel, Margam, 7.30pm. These ‘health walks’ have an accredited leader, Rod Hughes, accompanied by members with a wealth of historical information. There are great photographic opportunities. All welcome. Save Morfa Beach (Friends of Morfa) is a non-political organisation, but we are grateful for expert advice and support from local councillors who care about access to Morfa. We intend to ensure that every candidate for Neath Port Talbot Borough Council declares publicly where they stand on this issue, which is so vital for future generations. DR CHARLES SMITH

Through Christian eyes As we continue to think about revival (and I have written many things to show you God is real), I would like in this article to simply make an appeal. My appeal really is one of encouraging you personally to be open to God. As I have not always been a believer in Jesus/God myself, I know that life can carry on as normal and it can be ‘business as usual’ as they say – and that we can live without God for years

Fairtrade fortnight

To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, free cups of Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate and orange juice were supplied to shoppers in John Street, Porthcawl recently. Porthcawl Fairtrade Partnership manned a stall with the aim of promoting Fairtrade and encouraging the people of Porthcawl to shop for Fairtrade goods whenever possible. Despite the extremely windy weather, there was a very good response, with shoppers enjoying a warm drink. Our local MP, Madeleine Moon,

without giving Him a second thought. I lived that way for many years. Until one day I met God. I had to hit rock bottom to find Him but it doesn’t have to be that way, and that is why I ask you to take a moment in your life and think of God and the importance of making your peace with Him. The Bible says ‘Seek the Lord while He may be found.’ God is so good, and loves you so much! He longs for a relationship with you, but He won’t force you to have one with Him. He has given us free will. Use that free will to seek Him. NEIL HARVEY

and Councillor Barbara Stubbs, Porthcawl’s Town Mayor and her consort, showed their support for Fairtrade by visiting the stall. The Celtic Festival coincided with this Fairtrade event and a number of cold and thirsty dancers stopped for a drink, so hopefully not only has Fairtrade been promoted to the people of Porthcawl, but also across the Celtic world! There are now over 6,000 Fairtrade products in the shops and by buying these, you can help producers to work their way out of poverty. So look out for the Fairtrade mark and give products bearing this logo a try. They are very good and you will be giving some of the poorest people in the world encouragement to improve their lives, without relying on charity. PORTHCAWL FAIRTRADE PARTNERSHIP

Jemima’s Place Animal Trust Set in the heart of rural South Wales near Porthcawl, Jemima’s Place was named after our very first rescue duck, Jemima. When she passed away we decided to name the trust after her. At Jemima’s Place we work on the following principles: we never turn an animal away, if we can re-home we do; if we can’t, then they stay with us or one of our foster families. At Jemima’s Place we have all kinds of different animals in our care. Currently we have chickens, quail, ducks, hedgehogs, rabbits and guinea pigs, turtles, hamsters and donkeys. We also have dogs and cats with our foster families. Some of the animals are full-time residents because of illness, age or behaviour issues.

Porthcawl U3A Speaker and AGM Cardiff University Professor Roger Falconer was the Porthcawl U3A March guest speaker at The Rest and the Annual General Meeting followed his talk. The Severn Barrage was first proposed by the civil engineer and Gloucestershire County surveyor, Thomas Fulljames in 1849 and Professor Falconer gave a most detailed talk on the very latest ideas for this enormous project. Following the 2008-10 Severn Tidal Power Feasibility Study a decision to build the barrage is now looking more probable than at any time in the past 163 years. It would consist of a 10 mile dam across the Severn Estuary from Lavernock to Bream Down and cost £26 billion or £34 billion if topped with a road and £40 billion if built with a road and railway.

Jemima’s Place Animal Trust

However the history of large engineering projects is one of major cost overruns so these are only estimated figures. It would take seven years to build with a design life of 120 years and when finished, would produce enough electricity for all of Wales or 5% of the UK requirement although the plan is to divide the output 50/50 between England and Wales. Wind turbine generation is unpredictable and unreliable but electrical output from the barrage could be predicted 50 or even 100 years into the future. Besides green energy benefits it would also produce 30,000 construction jobs and 10,000 permanent jobs, control flooding, involve substantial enlargement of Port Talbot Deep Water Docks, major road and rail expansion and downstream Porthcawl would get a clearer and calmer sea for yachting and other major tourist attractions. We would simply like to say a big thank you to all those who supported us on the day. A special thanks to all the dignitaries who so freely gave up their time to spend the day with us. Firstly the Mayor of Porthcawl, Barbara Stubbs and her Consort, it was lovely to see them both again offering their support once more. Last, but certainly not least, it was lovely to see our local Member of Parliament, Madeline Moon, who made a great effort to pop in to see us amid her very busy schedule. The Rest is such a special iconic building and it would appear it has the love of so many folk – a landmark much too important to lose. Please don’t forget our Car Boot Sale on Easter Sunday 8th April and also on Sunday 6th May – with our café open to the general public. Finally a special thank you to David Newton-Williams for his plug for The Rest in his column in the local press.

Discover the history of the Kenfig community namely Kenfig, Maudlam, South and North Cornelly, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cefn Cribbwr, Stormy Down, Margam, Newton, Nottage and Porthcawl from their origins to the present day through archived manuscript records, newspaper articles, photos and personal accounts from local people. North Cornelly was originally a sub manor of the Kenfig borough which lay outside the boundaries of the borough itself. Its earliest holders were the Lupellus family who later adopted the name Lovel. The earliest recorded name of the village (from a document dating c.1183) is the rather cumbersome ‘The Vill of Walter Lupellus’. North Cornelly Cross has been at the heart of the village for centuries with the original village growing up around the manor house namely Hall Farm which was

built by Roger Gramus c.1245. Local roads in the Cornelly area date back to Roman times with Water Street previously called ‘Road of the foot soldiers’, this being a part of the Roman coastal road known as Julia Maritima which went from Gloucester to Carmarthen via Stormy Down, Maudlam and Kenfig. Bridgend Lions celebrate member’s 90th birthday

JOHN COSSON

Bridgend Lions Club were as delighted to present member Ken Willis with a special plaque to commemorate his 90th birthday as he was to receive it. Porthcawl resident Ken is one of just two remaining charter (founder) members of the club. As active as ever, advancing years don’t seem to hinder Ken. In addition to being a top seller of our charity Duck Race tickets he’s a stalwart of the club’s annual three day Book Fair and still to be seen lugging boxes of books. Many happy returns Ken!

Over 50s in Bridgend local authority can now benefit from a new support programme. Safeguarding Older People is an advocacy service run by Age Concern Morgannwg in conjunction with Age Cymru Swansea Bay and Age Cymru Neath Port Talbot. Rachel Rowlands from Age Concern Morgannwg says: “Safeguarding Older People is being run to promote the wellbeing of older people in the Bridgend area. “Anyone aged 50 or over who is perhaps feeling under pressure to make lifechanging decisions – such as moving into care, can make use of this service. We will provide you with a trained advocate who will speak up on your behalf to make sure your voice is heard.” “If you are experiencing any of these problems, please call us on 01792 648866 and we will make sure you are getting the support you need to get your voice heard.” The scheme’s trained advocates and volunteers can help older people who feel isolated or vulnerable. They are also working to raise awareness of the signs of elder abuse and to help people who are suffering abuse.

At RLE Law we are there to help you and to explain the various options open to you in order to make the best future for you and for your children if you have suffered from domestic violence. Injunctions There are two types of injunction available to you 1. Non-molestation Orders Various categories of people can apply for a Non-molestation Order, such as spouses or ex-spouses, civil partners or excivil partners or other people living in the same household, such as relatives. A Non-molestation Order will prevent a person from threatening, harassing, intimidating or pestering you or instructing or encouraging another person to do so. Sometimes these orders can be made for an indefinite period of time or sometimes for a defined period. 2. Occupation Orders An Occupation Order is an order which will exclude a person from a property or a defined area around it. These orders can also force a person from your property, even if they have the legal right to live there. In order to obtain one of the

orders, you will have to show that either you or your children have suffered as the result of another person’s behaviour. Occupation Orders are not intended to be permanent but will be made for a defined period of time. The court can also make orders giving you use of the contents of the home or making the other party pay for the repair and maintenance of the property or even the mortgage or rent of the property. To get a thorough understanding of your circumstances, we will ask you for a variety of information. This could include: - details of the history of your relationship; - whether the police and social services have been involved; - the names and ages of the children who are part of the family and where they are now living; - details of any ongoing problems, such as substance abuse, mental or physical illnesses; - whether you have previously spoken to a solicitor about your problems and whether any action has been taken; - if you are in refuge accommodation, what incidents occurred causing you to be there; - your income and asset details. This information will help us work out what options are best for you and what options you have for funding your case. If you have any queries regarding the above, please contact us at RLE Law. Inheritance tax planning using discounted gift trusts A discounted gift trust can be used to reduce the inheritance tax liability on your estate when you die. If you have excess capital which you know you will never need in the future but from which you would still like to draw ‘an income’, you may be the ideal candidate to invest in a discounted gift trust. What is a discounted gift trust? It is a life insurance investment bond, held in trust for beneficiaries of your choice. Setting up the arrangement involves making a gift of a lump sum, which is invested in a bond that is written in trust. You reserve the right to receive regular capital withdrawals (the income) from the bond, the level of which is agreed in advance. You choose the trustees, who will control the trust. Is it suitable for me? A discounted gift trust is particularly suitable for people aged sixty or over, who are reasonably likely to survive for the next seven years. How much inheritance tax will I save? That depends on how long you live after setting up the bond, as well as how

much you invest and the size and frequency of your capital withdrawals. There are two main elements to the saving: (1) Part of the lump sum becomes immediately exempt from IHT when you make the gift. The size of this ‘discount’ will vary from person to person, dependent on age, sex and health, as well as the size of your capital withdrawals. (2) The remainder of your investment will be reduced by IHT taper relief, as long as you survive for at least three years after making the gift and become fully exempt from IHT when seven years have elapsed. How much can I withdraw? You can withdraw up to 5% of the underlying capital value of the bond each year, tax-free at the point of receipt. These withdrawals will be paid to you for life at pre-agreed intervals, and will effectively provide you with a regular income from the bond. A discounted gift trust should be considered as part of your overall IHT planning strategy, and not in isolation. For more information, please contact me on 01656 785700. Mortgage rates on the rise

Many readers may have been faced with letters from their lenders advising them that the rate of interest charged on their mortgage is to increase, despite the Bank of England not having raised the base rate from the all time low of 0.5%. Many banks have blamed the spiralling cost of funding mortgages. The crisis in the Eurozone has pushed up the cost of borrowing money from the financial markets, as banks become more nervous about lending to each other. The Bank of Ireland for example have put their Standard

ian davies

Variable Rate (SVR) up from 2.99% to 4.49%. This equates to almost a 50% rise in mortgage payments. Is this a sign that the Bank of England will soon follow suit? One thing we can almost be certain of is that base rate will not fall further. This month if you have a mortgage that is on a lender’s standard variable rate, it really is worth looking at fixing the rate to be certain of your payments for a period of time. There are five year fixed rates available at below many lenders SVR. This not only will reduce your mortgage costs, it will provide much needed assurance that your largest monthly expense is not likely to spiral out of control. It is also worth weighing up your options even if you are tied into an existing deal. In some cases, taking a step backwards in terms of paying a penalty would be taking a massive stride forward in reducing your commitments and securing your financial future for a period of time. Peter Alan Porthcawl report sales increase in 2012 Peter Alan estate agents in Porthcawl have reported that their sales in the first two months of 2012 have risen by over 50% when compared to the same period last year. Christine Armsby, branch manager, commented “When we compared our sales in 2011 to those in 2012 we were very encouraged to see that there was an increase of over 50% this year which would suggest that buyer confidence has improved within the area, along with sales we have also looked into the profile of people that are buying and these results were very interesting also. We found that over 40% of our sales were attributed to second time movers who were selling and then buying on, this clearly shows that clients have a renewed confidence to bring their properties to

There are a number of ways to attract visitors to your website – offline marketing, social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, and blogging. While these can help, getting your search engine optimisation working properly is of crucial importance. There are a number of reasons why. It helps to build brand awareness. If your website has a high ranking, it means more people see you and become familiar with what you do and what you sell, even if they haven’t made a purchase. Good SEO brings paying customers to you. Using the right keywords, matched to what the customer is searching for, will improve your ranking on search engines such as Google. It has a long-term cost benefit. Unlike pay-per-click adverts, once you have a good ranking for a specific keyword searches, you will not pay for the traffic it generates. Although it can cost more initially, it is more cost effective in the long term. Competitors. April is a busy month for gardeners; it’s time to get your main crop potatoes in. Potatoes were first cultivated in Peru about 8000 years ago and apart from dairy foods are the most commonly eaten food in the western world! Plant them in trenches a spades depth, 24 inches apart at 15 inch intervals, fertilise between them and avoid lime at all costs! April is spruce up the lawn month too and the best time

Mowing little and often is the recipe for success, regular cutting keeps the lawn thick and green and deters weeds – but not my naughty lurcher and nine-year-old grandsons! Update on our coffee morning on the 7th April: between 10am and 12pm in the Green Hall we are now having a craft fair full of interesting things and an Easter bonnet competition for the children – we have plenty of seeds in our shop too – please come and support us! Calling all gardeners…join in to help make Cornelly, Mawdlam and Kenfig look special during the Olympics this summer. Enter a hanging basket, a floral tub or a window box as a resident or a business. The colour scheme is red, white and blue or gold, silver and bronze (tricky!). We aim to get an entry form to every house within the next few weeks; the closing date for return of entry forms is 1st July. Judging will be during the

neighbours’ trees. Don’t be conned though, there are still frosty mornings to be had putting an end to any early crops you may have planted out. Be patient and wait for all frost to be gone – better safe than sorry and seeds and plants will soon catch up even when

planted a little later. April is the ideal time to mow, feed and repair lawns and also to plant white clover (not great if you want the ‘perfect lawn’ but great for bees and as a feed). It’s a busy time for planting seeds but try doing a seed or

Bridgend Ramblers are introducing an extra programme of shorter walks for the summer to help keep you fit and healthy. Look out for posters outlining the programme at various locations – surgeries, swimming pools, libraries etc. April and May’s walks are also shown in the Forthcoming Events page of Seaside News. These shorter walks will be held once a month at 2pm on Friday afternoons and are aimed at people new to walking.

They will be typically between two and three miles long and not particularly demanding. You should be prepared to cross fields, negotiate muddy patches, and perhaps use stiles or gates. The walks will be led by experienced leaders and paced to suit the needs of the walkers and will last about one and a half hours. See our website : www. bridgendramblers.co.uk for our full programme of walks. All newcomers will be made very welcome. ALLAN MORGAN

Vitamin B12 Deficiency can look identical to Alzheimer’s Disease

When is Alzheimer’s Disease not Alzheimer’s Disease? When it’s actually caused by undiagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency. Go to www.naturalnews. com/027456_deficiency_vitamin_B12_disease.html to find out: • The three ways to determine if you are B12 deficient or not (most people have no idea). • The gold standard for testing B12 levels.

Stroke Awareness Day

• Three little-known methods to properly raise your B12 levels and keep them there. • Which B12 supplements are a complete waste of time (and money) and might actually harm your health. • Why your doctor probably doesn’t know anything about vitamin B12. • The most common symptoms of B12 deficiency (including many you may not be aware of). • Why vitamin B12 deficiency is routinely misdiagnosed. • Which type of vitamin B12 you should avoid (hint: it’s the most common form, used in may ‘cheap’ multivitamins). This webinar gives you valuable information on why you may need vitamin B12 and where to get a ‘human-active’ form of vitamin B12. It’s extremely informative even if you already take vitamin B12!

I’m 50 and where are my teeth?

The “Big Five 0”, “It’s all downhill now…”, “Aww how you feeling?” What is it all about? I have no problem being 50. It’s everyone around me who has. It’s just a number guys – OK, I do need my glasses to write cheques, but I tend to avoid that, not because I have no money, but I would have to wear my glasses.

Strokes are the third most common cause of death in the UK. Because of this, the Rotary Club of Porthcawl, in conjunction with the Stroke Association, want to encourage adults to have their blood pressure checked. This will help to identify those who are at risk of developing stroke so that they can be appropriately treated. Qualified medical staff will be

at Trinity Church, John Street, Porthcawl between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 28th April (Stroke Awareness Day) to offer free blood pressure checks. This short, simple test only takes a few minutes but could help to save lives. Everyone can reduce their risk of having a stroke by making simple, healthy changes to their everyday routine – not smoking, eating healthily,

My shoulders ache carrying groceries so I take my husband with me saying it would be lovely to spend more time doing things together. He’s so pleased he will be a gentleman and carry the groceries. Guys, there are ways around most things once you are 50. Sorry, I’m rambling, but as you know, I am 50 – it’s allowed. Back to the matter in hand, “where are my teeth?” Fortunately for me they are in my mouth. For us over 50s we may be at risk of tooth sensitivity, shrinking gums, dry mouth to name but three. We should have regular check ups to help us identify these changes in our mouths. Brushing our teeth as we learnt to do as toddlers is not going to be enough to accommodate for these ageing changes. Book of the month:

Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult Jodi Picoult loves to explore difficult issues and in Lone Wolf, active Luke Warren, who is at is happiest with the wolves he has made his name studying, is in a coma and his family face an impossible dilemma. His daughter Cara is praying for a miracle: she will fight everything and everyone to save her father’s life. But his son Edward can’t imagine that a man who once ran with wolves could ever be happy with a different life. However Edward hasn’t spoken to Luke for six years. How can he dare to speak on his father’s behalf? Can they let him go without destroying the family that is left behind? ELAINE WINSTANLEY

Thanksgiving for Blue

Because of you The days that once were grey And dark Turned into azure blue Because of you

And times That once seemed senseless Bounding into our lives And had no meaning Tail-wagging bundle of joy Became the times Ever exploring, That I enjoy once more In mischief demanding The times are true Yet all you were asking was love Because of you Snuggling into our hearts You always had so much to give You’d love us, you’d guard us Be ever beside us Your gift to us all was your love You rested at last in our love When no longer able to give To protect us, to guard us Or go walkies beside us Yet peaceful you’d lie in our love Thank you, Lord, for these lessons of love You taught us through dear little Blue Of trust and submission And faithful devotion As is ours with our Father above PAULINE LEWIS Porthcawl

The plow

Forever gone

Love, or its lack, forges shapes. Trampling onward carving its path. Rooting, upturning, grinding rocks and stones. Pounding to dust resistance.

Voices I heard, call out to me Beyond the veil of darkest night, Where shimmering stars flicker with light And worlds collide with a thundering might.

Ever sharp, its blade unyielding, unforgiving forceful intensity. Purpose led. Harnessed in driving mission. Virgin soil, waiting. Love seeking ploughs on. Thrusting, preparing. Loves lack ploughs on. Relentless, uncaring. The Plough impregnates all.

I heard the voices call out to me Where moonbeams dance across the sky, To fill the heavens with an anguished cry As if at once, they all did die. The voices I heard, I hear no more All breaths extinguished forever gone, A race extinct, no longer to roam Their vast unending spaces of home. RHIAN WHITE

Porthcawl Male Choir Porthcawl Male Choir recently held its annual charity concert in All Saints Church, which this year is in aid of Porthcawl Athletics Club. Joining them were a choir composed of pupils of West Park Primary School and two highly accomplished instrumentalists, Jonathan Mainwaring on trumpet and Nigel Hart on piano. The children entertained the audience with their rendering of a number of Welsh songs and were followed by the male choir who sung, amongst others, two well known operatic pieces, new to their repertoire, La Donne Mobile and O Sole Mio.

Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society

Jonathan and Nigel followed by playing a number of popular and nostalgic pieces, amongst which was a special requested rendering, by Jonathan, of the fifties Eddie Calvert favourite, O Mein Papa. It was a truly entertaining evening. On St David’s Day afternoon, Porthcawl Male Choir, repaid West Park Primary for their kind contribution to the charity concert, by entertaining them at the end of their own school festivities. The children were a most appreciative audience, voicing their approval enthusiastically, particularly when the choristers, attired as pirates, sang ‘The Jolly Roger’, proving that no age barriers exists where music is concerned. It’s been a busy time for me as we are still filming “tales of a supernatural nature”, but I still managed to catch a lot of good live music. seeing the same bands all the time and it seems to be paying off. They are also trying live music on a Saturday so check it out. Myself and Mark (still not as famous as sister Ruth) Jones guitarist with the Guzzards went to the grand Pavilion to see a 60s supergroup which featured Chip Hawkes (Tremoles) Tony Crane (Mersey Beats) and Jeff Truton (Rocking Berries). I was surprised how good they were and really enjoy it! Although I wasn’t around at the time I’ve always liked the 60s music, and it so did, to a packed crowd at the venue. Bridgend singer/songwriter Phill James new single Oxwich Bay is selling well and is single of the week on Radio Wales so have a listen. Finally, happy birthday to local filmmaker Anthony Hontoir, and my good mate Laurence Parry, who helps with the column. Keep your calls and texts coming about your music news. Cheers. PAODS presents the Sound of Music

Porthcawl Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society returns to the Grand Pavilion in April 2012 with their exciting and innovative twist on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s timeless classic, The Sound Of Music. Famous numbers such as ‘My Favourite Things’, ‘Edelweiss’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’ and ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’, set against the Von Trapp family’s defiance of Nazi

Germany’s rising influence in Europe make this Tony Awardwinning musical a favourite amongst audiences since its opening in 1959. The show is famous for its film adaptation, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, and has recently enjoyed a new lease of life following Connie Fisher’s triumph on the BBC’s How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? PAODS welcomes back Ralph Thomas, Gaynor Thomas and Mike Plowman as the production’s artistic directors, who have brought the show’s famous numbers and unforgettable characters to life in an original and refreshing way. Lots of new faces appear on stage this year, creating a wonderfully talented and energetic cast who will have you whistling, foot-tapping, laughing and crying before you leave your seat. JOE WALTERS

Morgan and West, Time Travelling Magicians

One of the top acts ‘Down Under’ at the Adelaide Fringe 2012 features a young man from Porthcawl. Rhys Jones attended St John’s School and St Clare’s School then went on to read Physics at St John’s College, Oxford. After three years of sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe he and his friend Rob decided to quit their teaching jobs and try to earn a living with their magic show called ‘Morgan and West, Time Travelling Magicians’. They were encouraged in this by baffling top American magicians Penn and Teller and

winning a trip to Las Vegas where they performed in the Penn and Teller show. Rhys and Rob currently live in Oxford where they recently featured in the local press. Both have had some years of experience in amateur theatre and even wrote their own musical. These talented young men (aged 24 and 25) are bringing their show to Harri’s Café Bar@The Dance Centre, Elm Crescent, Bryntirion CF31 4EA on Friday 20th April. The five star review from Elliot Bibby, who wrote “This is a great all round show, and is a great family spectacle”, is typical of the reaction of theatrical critics. The website morganandwest. co.uk will give a full flavour of their talents. Any profits from their show will be donated to Cancer Research Wales and a small number of tickets for this intimate venue (cost £7) are available from Harri’s Café Bar or from Allan Jones 01639 888053.

The 11th Porthcawl International Jazz Festival will take place on the 13th, 14th and 15th April. The major players include The John Miller Orchestra, The Pasadena Roof Orchestra, The Capital City Jazz Orchestra, Michael Janisch and the New York Standards Quartet, The B D Lenz Trio, The Nik Turner Quartet, The Gabrielle Ducomble Quartet, Wonderbrass, the Cottle Brothers Generations and Mike Harries and the Root Doctors. The festival will also feature a wide range of the finest Welsh bands. Further information on festival artists can be found on the festival website www.porthcawl-jazzfestival.com

Commenting on the 2012 programme, Festival Director Wayne Warlow says: ”The main aim of the Porthcawl International Jazz Festival is to present a comprehensive programme of jazz styles ranging from traditional to contemporary fusion performed by artists of the highest quality. “While we hope that, as usual, the festival will bring into Porthcawl jazz enthusiasts from all over the UK and further afield, we never lose sight of the importance of our festival as a community event. To this end there will also be workshops for young musicians and free access community performances in public places.” CHRIS GREEN

Porthcawl Runners enjoyed another successful season in the West Glamorgan cross country league. The men’s senior team ably led yet again by Will Edwards, finished runners up to Swansea University. A second successive promotion sees them take their place next year amongst the elite teams in division one. Some great individual performances from Chris Jenkins, Tom Davies and Geraint Lewis were instrumental in the team’s success. In the individual standings, Geraint came 4th and Chris came 10th from a total of 243 runners.

When summer competitions end, winter competitions come into full ‘swing’ but they are not quite the same. Entry levels are down, you have to be very keen to brave the cold and rain, and driving winds can be yet another deterrent. Further, there are no knock-out competitions and no prospect of winning a major or having the glory of your name forever on an honours board. However the long winter is broken up by several very successful social activities, the principal of which is Presenta-

The men’s veteran team managed to avoid relegation with strong performances in the final two fixtures. The ladies team, led again this season by ever present Rebecca Hambrook, finished a very respectable third position in division one, losing out on the runners up spot by the narrowest of margins. In the individual standings the ever improving Nicola Thomas 3rd and Sharon Ford 4th led the way from over 100 competitors. Elaine Kelleher, Romana Maine and Helen Beale also played a big part in the team effort. Congratulations should go to Port Talbot Harriers, who for the second season in a row accomplished the double, winning both the men’s and ladies league titles. ANTONY PHILLIPS

tion Night. It is, in reality, a celebration and a party and few other clubs party like P&K. 2011 was deemed a very successful year with the success of the Junior Section noted in particular. The course is the envy of many and P&K’s unique social atmosphere is enjoyed by both members and visitors alike through the whole year. After the presentations, the cups are filled with special cocktails expertly mixed, shaken or stirred by the bar staff. Friends and former opponents are then invited to partake of the concoctions and celebrations carry on well into the night. The price, and sometimes it is a heavy price, is paid with a very sore head the next morning. JACK MCKEE

Borough athletes to compete in the Olympic Stadium With less than 150 days to the start of the 2012 Olympics two very promising athletes from the borough received some very exciting news. They will be competing in the Olympic Stadium before their sporting heroes. Bridgend AC athletes Zoe Dakin and Isabel Hughes have both been selected to represent the Welsh Schools Under 17 Athletics Team in the 2012 School Games, 9th May 2012. The 2012 School Games, is a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes. The athletics will be held in the Olympic Stadium, London, with a potential crowd of 24,000. The girls have never performed in front a crowd this size before and this will be a true test of their abilities

What are Wajia and Neijia? The Chinese classify martial art into two categories. Wajia or external styles are the styles most people think of as martial arts, with hard physical training and aggressive often noisy practise with lots of competition and examinations. Neijia or internal styles involve gentler relaxed practise, usually without competitions and examinations. Most people have an idea of what is involved with the most popular Neijia style which is Tai Chi, but very few know anything about the other two Chinese Neijia called Bagua and Xing Yi. Most doing Tai Chi for health reasons today do not realise that in China, Bagua masters far outlive Tai Chi masters, and

and nerve. Zoe, a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari, is competing as an individual in the hammer event and has been given the added pressure of being the Girls captain. Isabel, a pupil at Brynteg Comprehensive School ,will be a member of the 4 x 300m relay team and is currently appearing on CBBC in a programme called Ultimate Sports Day. Wales will be competing against Northern Ireland, Scotland and five regional English schools’ teams. This is the second year the girls have represented the Welsh schools in this event but nothing could’ve have prepared them for this year’s venue. Bridgend AC would like to congratulate you both and wish you every success. For further information on Bridgend AC and how to join, become a volunteer or follow the progress of Zoe and Isabel please go to the website www. bridgendac.co.uk JANE DAKIN Bridgend AC

in the days of fighting challenges, Xing Yi masters were the most feared. Sun Lutang was the most famed Chinese Neijia master who taught his own Sun Style of all three Neijia. The three very different Chinese Nejia compliment each other, and to quote Mr Lei, one of today’s leading Sun Style masters: “Serious Sun Style students should study all three arts like sitting on a three leg stool. One or two legs and the stool lacks balance.” JOHN JONES

Friendly Instruction in the three Sun Style arts is available from 7pm on Wednesday evenings at the All Saints Church Hall, Victoria Avenue, Porthcawl. Tel : John, 01656 784991

Both Jonny Clatworthy and Sean Evans had identical fortunes in the ring this month, both losing and winning a bout each. Both Jonny’s opponents were boys he had previously fought, the first was his nemesis Romeo Romaeo, who he had previously boxed twice and lost to. Both boxers went into the fight as British Champions at slightly different weights so it was a closely fought, skilful bout. The judges gave it to the aggressor Romaeo, who just threw more punches overall and did just deserve the nod. His next was a re-run of the British final where against his opponent from Splott. He took a close points win, much to the disappointment by his foe feeling he had done enough to win himself.

Light-Heavyweight Sean, also on the Splott show, lost a close bout which the crowd really enjoyed because both fighters stood toe to toe and threw everything into it until the final bell. Following that defeat Sean took on a boy from Tylorstown in a venue in Trebanog two weeks later. Sean showed off his boxing skills and started to score with ease. He seemed to get better with each round, to take the bout with a well deserved unanimous points win. PAUL CHAPPELL

Porthcawl RFC Youth Porthcawl Youth 31 Pentyrch Youth 0 Porthcawl Youth welcomed a good Pentyrch side for this Friday night game. The visitors started very brightly and it looked like being a difficult night for the young Seaweeds in the first ten minutes. However once the home side started winning some ball then the game was turned on its head and the Seaweeds blitzed the Cardiff side with a scintillating display of attacking rugby in the first half scoring three tries and two conversations. The second half was a more stop start affair with the home side making numerous changes which disrupted the flow of the game. With Pentyrch trying desperately to get a deserved try the young Seaweeds held firm and where able to score two more excellent tries of their own to win the game 31-0. This young youth team can now look forward to playing an experienced Cefn Cribbwr outfit in the District Cup Semi Final at Cefn on Friday 16th March ko 7.15pm PAUL BROWN

Bridgend District Youth semi-final Cefn Cribwr RFC Youth 8 Porthcawl RFC Youth 17 The young Seaweeds made the short journey to Cefn for this Friday night game at Cae Gof. A large crowd was present to watch this district cup semi-final between these near neighbours. Cefn being made up of 3rd year youth boys and a league above were the favourites however this very young Porthcawl side were playing with nothing to lose. As was expected the opening exchanges were frantic with both sides sizing each other up, from the outset it was clear that Cefn would be playing a forward orientated game whilst Porthcawl were spreading the ball at every opportunity. The young Seaweeds had plenty of possession to use however mistakes at key times gave the ball back to Cefn who bulldozed their way up field. The first score of the game came from Porthcawl when Josh White struck a good penalty from the side-lines. Ten minutes later Cefn levelled the scores with another well taken penalty. Porthcawl seemed to have more intensity about their game and after a number of good phases of play they were able to get quick ball. The ball was spread out superbly along the back to Lloyd Rosser who crossed the line at speed to score a great try which went unconverted. Cefn threw everything they had at the young Seaweeds but were unable to make any ground due to the superb defence of the away side. An infringement on the half way line by Cefn gave Porthcawl the chance to increase their lead. Josh White coolly slotted it to go into the break 11-3 up. Cefn started the second half strongly and put considerable pressure on the young Seaweeds, unfortunately after a number of infringements Porthcawl were given a yellow card and

reduced to 14 men. Cefn decided to run the penalty but superb defence by Porthcawl eventually led to the ball being turnover and the Seaweeds forcing their way up field. A series of strong phases put pressure on Cefn and eventually the seaweeds were awarded a penalty which Josh White successful converted to make the score 14-3. The away side were soon back to 15 men and during the period they were a man down actually scored 3 points to nil. Cefn responded again with some strong forward play however the young seaweeds were spoiling the party and when Josh White was successful again with a penalty they knew the game was theirs to

win. The final five minutes Cefn bombarded the Porthcawl line but could not find a way through. On the final play of the game a number of forward drives led to them scoring an unconverted try. The whistle was then blown to end the match with Porthcawl winning 17-8. This game was a superb advert of youth rugby and both sided should be congratulated in the manner that the game was played and the respect that was shown to each other after the final whistle. For Porthcawl to get to the cup final in their first year of youth rugby is a great achievement for this young side. PAUL BROWN
