Welcome Welcome along to the last issue of 2011 - can’t believe how quickly this year has gone! Mind you, I seem to be saying that every year. Firstly, I want to say a big thank you to all readers who took the time to send in your potential cover photos – it was a pretty tough job choosing just one for the cover! Keep sending us your local shots and we will endeavour to use them in forthcoming issues. Two big events taking place in Porthcawl during December are the Christmas Morning Swim and Santa’s Carolcade, details of both can be seen inside. Plus we have a free download of the Carolcade route available on our website. Also soon to be available on our website is the complete 2012 Tide Times for our local beaches. You can also find the tide times for this month and January

2012 in this issue. Please feel free to let us know what you think of the magazine - what we are doing right or wrong, or if there’s anything you would like to see in the Seaside News. The whole premise behind the Seaside News is that all articles, views, news and reports are written and supplied by you - the reader, so if you don’t write in it won’t get published! We are constantly trying to improve every aspect of the publication, so please get in touch. Don’t forget, the next issue of the Seaside News will be for February 2012. All that remains is to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you next year, MAT HARDWICKE Editor

Guinea Pig Rescue Dear Editor, Everyone knows about dog and cat rehoming organisations but few realise that guinea pigs are also desperately in need of good homes. This year I have adopted four guinea pigs from the Glynneath Guinea Pig Rescue and I would urge your readers to have a look at the website. Based near Neath, Glynneath Guinea Pig Rescue is a haven for all guinea pigs that need a new home, or for anyone who wants to give guinea pigs a new home. The Piggy Dating Service is a speciality of the rescue - finding a new cagemate for lonely/bereaved guinea pigs. All guinea pigs are re-homed as a non-breeding pair or trio, or as a companion to your lone guinea pig, and never re-homed as companions to rabbits. No guinea pigs from this centre are to be used for breeding. Please take a moment to view the piggies that are waiting for their happy ending. JILL SWEET, PORTHCAWL http://guinearescue.blogspot.com/

Neighbourhood policing: Nottage & Rest Bay Dear Editor, I read with interest the above article with the subhead “Your Top Priorities 1. Speeding.” The results shown are good but at that time of the day they should be. As the only traffic you have at that time are goods vehicles and elderly couples coming into Porthcawl for lunch. The speed camera operators stand at the corner of Rest Bay Close and Fulmar Road in bright yellow jackets which can be seen from two

08 www.seasidenews.co.uk

hundred yards down Fulmar Road telling all drivers ‘here we are, slow down’. The school run between 8am and 9am also 3.30pm and 4.15pm would be a good time to have the cameras in operation, also on weekends when the younger drivers rendezvous at Rest Bay. I have lived in Fulmar Road for over twenty years and we do have a problem with traffic using the road at speed. Speed counters may help to show I am right but ‘sleeping policemen’ like New Road would be better or put a permanent speed camera somewhere en route, particularly at the sea end of the road coming into Porthcawl. We all appreciate the police effort but background information may have helped them more. PETER JONES

Newton beach I’m writing to express my thanks to Duncan Ludlow of the Countryside Council. My wife and I come down to Newton regularly to walk, exercise our Goldie, and take in the superb scenery that this area has to offer. We’ve travelled the world, but still realise that this coastline is a rare treasure to be appreciated. We’ve always tried to do our bit for the environment and since the summer tourists have departed, we’ve tried, as best we can, to pick up bottles and cans and all the rest of the flotsam and jetsam that

washes in. With the support of Duncan, who regularly patrols the dunes on his quad bike and trailer, we have been clearing the beach at the tideline, bagging and piling up the detritus at a sheltered spot behind the dunes, from where Duncan can pick it up. Hopefully this can continue long-term, so that everyone who walks the area can benefit. Again I would like to pass on my thanks to Duncan, whom we have never actually met, for helping us keep this stretch of the coast a place to be proud of. MARK & MARILYN HOBBS

Wind turbines The Seaside News last month featured letters from Steve Rees and Suzy Davies AM about wind turbines. To clarify things, there are currently several different schemes which are proposed for the area. The Margam Park one is onshore and being proposed by REG Windpower. However a massive new offshore scheme from RWE npower, ‘The Atlantic Array Offshore Wind Farm’ in the Bristol Channel, is well into the planning process and already coming to the end of its formal public consultation stage. The consultation display was only in the Pavilion for one day, so anyone who wants to find out about it can view the Preliminary Environmental Information (PEI) volumes 1 and 2, plans and documents online at www.rwe.com. Alas by the time this letter is printed, the formal public consultation will have finished on 10th November. I urge anyone who values the

coastlines of South Wales and Devon to read the information online, and especially have a look at the wireline images. For those without internet access, the Atlantic Array scheme is proposing to build on an area approximately 492 km2, situated 16 km from the South Wales coast and 14 km off the Devon coast. They have a number of options for turbine usage, including up to 417 x 3.6 MW turbines with a blade tip height of 165m, or up to 188 x 8MW turbines with a tip height of 220m. This will be visible from our coast and the Devon coast, and to date will be the biggest offshore wind farm in Europe in terms of number of turbines. CATH TANNER Porthcawl

Margam Wind Farm After reading the article by Suzy Davies in the November issue regarding the wind farm that is proposed for Margam mountain, I felt I had to write

and put another side to the argument. We keep on refusing to have these wind farms wherever they are proposed, but surely mountains, where not many people live are good places. Also there are only five windmills being suggested for this site, which in my mind is not very many, and surely they can be erected around the historic sites she mentioned. Our other horrible alternatives are nuclear power stations, which surely people cannot want to use, leaving the waste which these stations produce for our children and future generations to deal with. Have we all got short memories about what happened in Japan very recently, nothing is a hundred percent safe, and what happened in Japan could happen in this country. So I suggest five wind turbines are not so bad after all. Surely we must think of future generations and at least try and leave them some reasonable options. J GEORGE Porthcawl

Regeneration Dear Editor, After winning the March by-election I promised to keep your readers updated. Since then I have been focussing on areas identified during the campaign and the regeneration issue. I have secured agreement that BCBC’s Regeneration Officer will attend council every eight weeks to update councillors on progress. I persuaded our council to improve communications with townsfolk; this has led to a newsletter for residents and monthly articles in Seaside News. The council accepted in principle my proposal that we should employ our own enforcement officer to deal with widespread parking problems, littering and dog fouling. I tried to cap the amount that our council can spend on projects without consulting you, and to make sure that future spending plans are published

for all to see; these ideas were rejected. The local element of your council tax has gone up by 49% over the last four years, yet you have little say in how the money is spent. I am now invited to BCBC’s Regeneration Forum, which last year barred entry to a Nottage town councillor, as well as myself and a friend acting on behalf of the online regeneration campaign. It is a sign of our pressure that BCBC is doing far more to communicate on regeneration issues. Finally, as 2011 draws to a close, another year has passed without a stone being turned in the name of regeneration. People I speak to think that until diggers appear on Salt Lake then regeneration won’t be real. Sadly, I have no confidence that we will see stones being turned in 2012 either. My thanks to the people of Newton for your support. CLLR GRAHAM WALTER

Independent, Newton

Regeneration fiasco Dear Editor, In a recent BCBC news bulletin it gave information on the regeneration plans for the borough. It stated that it was starting on phase four in Maesteg at a cost of £2.4m and having completed phase six for Bridgend and phase three for other areas of the borough, but following the usual pattern, the progress for phase one in Porthcawl is almost nil. This is after 47 years of waiting. BCBC stated that £3m would be spent on refurbishing the harbour but they forgot to mention that £2m was coming from outside sources and the other £1m was coming from the sale of Porthcawl land to Tesco, in other words, it was costing them nothing. The Welsh Assembly is pouring many, many millions into other areas for regeneration but very little money will come Porthcawl’s way as they have the

same attitude as BCBC, that Porthcawl must finance its own regeneration schemes from the sale of Porthcawl council land and yet we have no say in the planning or how the money is spent. It is incredible that since Porthcawl finance their own regeneration projects and pay the highest rates in the borough, BCBC has the audacity to refuse Porthcawl a swimming pool, sports centre etc. Over the years BCBC/Ogwr have shown very little interest in Porthcawl and it is said that their interest is now at the prospect of increasing their coffers by millions from the rates on 1,350 new properties to be built at Salt Lake and Sandy Bay. Unfortunately the regeneration plans for Porthcawl, handling the sale of land, together with the fact that Porthcawl has no part or say in the decision makes it an utter farce and of no benefit to Porthcawl. Zoolab Afon y Felin news A great big thank you to Andrew Jenkins, Stuart Thomas and Gareth Jones of Calor Gas. They have very kindly donated a large gas barbecue and a bottle of gas to our school. Gareth has grandchildren who attend our school. The barbecue was used at our firework display. The night was a great success. Thanks to all who helped on the night and to the families who came to see the fireworks. The whole school made and signed a get well card for Simon Richardson, the injured paralympic cyclist. Below is a letter from the card, penned by Class 3. The card will be presented to him by the head girl and boy. Dear Simon, We hope that you are getting better after your accident. We were shocked to hear what happened, and we’re very sorry to learn you were not well. We hope you are not too disappointed about not being able to make the Olympics because we know you are a fabulous cyclist! You are really great and we hope and wish you have a speedy recovery! Cynffig news It is hard to believe that Christmas is nearly here. For those of you who regularly attend our Christmas carol concert it is on Wednesday 14th December, all are welcome. This month has been a fantastic one for the school with a visit by the Destiny for Africa children’s choir. The choir range in age from 8-16 and all have had some trauma in their lives and are now looked after by the Kampala Children’s Cen-

tre where they will live until they are 18. The children were inspirational in their optimism and determination to make something of themselves. We have recently introduced a Learner of the Month award for every year group and I would like to congratulate the following pupils on their hard work and excellent attitude to learning and community work: Daniel Hall; Lucy McArthur; Hywel Park; Maria Williams; Stephen Davies; Mathew Kruk; and Amy Wilmott. All pupils nominated by their teachers have received letters home congratulating them on their work. The Learners of the Month award winners will all be entered into our grand draw and will be able to win some fabulous prizes for themselves. May I wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year from the staff and pupils of Cynffig Comprehensive School. SUE DAVIES Head Teacher

Greetings from Newton Primary It’s another busy month in Newton and one full of celebrations. Congratulations to Paige Sheen in Year 5 who was one of five talented county gymnasts to perform in BCBC’s Following the Flame exhibition in Bridgend Recreation Centre. Paige’s class will visit the exhibition later this month which promises to be an exciting event. Congratulations also to Year 4 pupils, Stella Marks, Isabelle Hone and Elinor Giess who were 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizewinners in Porthcawl Town Council’s Christmas Poster competition. Year 5 pupils attended the town’s Act of Remembrance at the Bandstand on Armistice Day and head boy and girl, Owen Jeal and Anna Biju represented Newton at the

Recently, pupils at Porthcawl Comprehensive School had an experience to remember! Over 30 pupils made up of our Science Club, along with a number of sixth formers, enjoyed the opportunity of holding giant land snails, hissing cockroaches, giant millipedes, stick insects, snakes and much, much more. Zoolab, who offer an educational workshop, provided an active learning experience with a twist! Pupils enhanced their knowledge and respect for the natural world. Pupils learnt all about a variety of different animals, about their habitats, feeding habits

Remembrance Service, laying a wreath at the town’s cenotaph. It was brilliant to see so many people there. All pupils enjoyed a fantastic Halloween disco, organised by Team Newton – many thanks to our hard-working team for their commitment and enthusiasm. The £400 raised will go towards buying all those extras which we really appreciate. We are all busy preparing for our Christmas concerts and are looking forward to the festivities. May we wish you a happy, blessed Christmas and a safe, healthy, prosperous New Year. GILL GORE

Nottage news Nottage Primary School celebrated Healthy Schools Week in a bid to become an even more healthy school. It was incredible to see how confident the pupils were when it came to handling the insects, especially the snakes! The tarantula, which even frightened some of the staff away, had the pupils holding out their hands desperate to touch and hold. A great time and learning experience was had by all. Thanks must also go to Molly Ashton and Joseph Culbertson for representing the school at the Remembrance Service held in Porthcawl. This is the eleventh year that the school has been supporting this important event. Our appreciation of the work of the staff at Barclays Bank must also get a mention. Recently, Barclays staff gave up their own time to help refurbish our reception area. Christmas & New Year greetings from St John’s School! As I am writing this article we have just returned from the half-term break and are looking forward to another busy few weeks of lessons and school exams, as well as our Christmas festivities and a variety of activities, visits and charity fundraising days. St Clare’s As I write this we’re busy making plans for our school open day which takes place on 2nd December – we look forward to introducing some new parents and pupils to our small but busy school community. Our pupils have been hard at work this first term back; with some already having taken exams, many enjoying success in various sports and others getting heavily involved in music, arts and drama. Our pupils have shown us, once again, their caring side as

As youngsters look forward to Christmas, mums will be frantically looking for tinsel and tea-towels for the school nativity or welcoming home students – and their laundry! carriageway will have noticed the new decoration. We are justifiably proud of Mr Roach (Head of Art) and our students, who helped with this project. This initiative was coordinated by SHOUT who thanked us for our participation in a ‘fine community project’. As I write, we are planning one of the highlights of our year.

On 16th November we celebrated our first CA birthday. RE N UR We have had a busy year with lots of new children and have made many improvements to the nursery. We have transformed the two pre-school rooms, toddler room, the entrance porch and had new kitchen cupboards. By moving a wall outside, we were able to enlarge our play area by 12ft. Our aim for the new year is to have a safer surface fitted to the outside terrace and to decorate baby room so it has the WOW factor. We had a top score of five in our environmental health inspection and a glowing end of year report from our Foundation Phase teacher. The partners and staff would like to thank everybody involved in our first year and for their encouraging comments. During December we have trips to Brecon Mountain Railway and Margam Park to feed the reindeer. Pre-school are looking forward to their Christmas party and concert. Our open evening was a success, with parents having the opportunity to see their children’s beautiful displays and project books. From everyone at the Burrows, we wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. LORRAINE, JULIE AND KIM

We are now into winter, woolly hats and gloves and thick nu y rser coats – yeah! There is nothing better than enjoying the crisp sea air with the children and, of course, hopefully building huge snowmen. Some of you may have read or heard that the Rest Home has submitted a planning application for the regeneration of their site. As much as this saddens us and we had hoped that we would be a part of this project, it means we must start the process of looking for a new premises and location. Rest assured, we still have four years of our lease left before we have to leave the site – plenty of time for us to relocate – and the Rest have assured us that they will support and help us as much as they can during this time. This is an exciting time for us. In answer to some of the rumours, we are definitely not shutting. We are relocating, and are very much looking forward to doing so! A big merry Christmas and happy New Year to all our parents, grandparents, friends and family and a huge thank you to you all for your wonderful kind words at this time. We are very much looking forward to 2012, new beginnings and lots of new opportunities.

Tackling fuel poverty must be a Welsh Government priority An independent report into fuel poverty by social policy expert Professor John Hills has found that almost 3,000 people in England and Wales die each year because they are not able to afford to keep warm in winter months. This has been compounded by the particularly harsh winters we have experienced over recent years. If this pattern continues people really are going to struggle to pay the bills to enable them to keep warm and healthy. It is outrageous that in this day and age thousands of people can’t afford to heat their homes during the cold winter months. This issue keeps reappearing each year but

BCBC bites at Green Apple Awards

Bridgend County Borough Council’s award-winning recycling service has picked up another prestigious prize. Along with partners May Gurney, BCBC has picked up a top Gold Green Apple Award in The Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice. The Green Apple Awards are given out by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world. This year’s Green Apple follows

still not enough is being done to help the people that are struggling. I believe that fuel poverty must be one of the Welsh Government’s number one priorities. Not a single person in Wales should be forced to live in a cold home, which is why doubling the money available to tackle fuel poverty was one of the key pledges in the Welsh Liberal Democrat manifesto. This funding would radically overhaul the energy efficiency of around an extra 12,000 homes providing the support that is so dearly needed. PETER BLACK AM

Happy holidays? We all feel the strain on the purse strings at Christmas, and sadly there are industries

a run of recent success for BCBC’s recycling scheme. In September the council won a public vote to top the Local Authority Partnership category of Cylch’s Wales Recycling Awards and last month was awarded gold in the PRide Awards in recognition of efforts to increase awareness and participation in its weekly recycling scheme. Judges have been consistently impressed by the authority’s efforts which have seen BCBC move from being one of the worst performing authorities in Wales to one of the best. Councillor Phil White, BCBC’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “This is another pat on the back for both the service we offer and the householders of our county borough. It is a great incentive for everyone to keep recycling.” MICHELLE BOWER BCBC

eager to take advantage of our desire for a happy, generous holiday. High interest ‘pay-day’ lending has more than doubled since 2006 to be worth £1.9 billion. However, even more rapid has been the rise in debt problems – the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has recorded a fourfold increase in cases. Which? says that these loan companies typically charge £20–35 for a short-term £100 loan. The question is, how do we best protect people from these predatory businesses? One response is to promote more reliable credit institutions. I am a proud member of Bridgend Lifesavers credit union, which has loans of £500,000 but savings of £1 million. Happily, a new law will allow these unions to expand. Meanwhile, others have suggested placing a cap on payday loan charges, but there is a risk that caps would force loans onto the black market. Another approach is that of a Bill currently in Parliament that would require loan companies to offer links to debt advice. CAB and Google are also working together to see how they can raise the CAB’s online profile, to offer people a better solution for a happy and secure Christmas. Local CAB can be reached at 01656 654951. MADELEINE MOON MP

of the workforce in every part of the plant. Tata are to be congratulated for making £300m of investment there with hundreds of millions more in new developments pending. This steelworks is as important now as it ever was to the South Wales economy – it employs 4,000 people directly with a further 6,000 jobs with contractors and suppliers. But it must not be penalised out of existence by EU inspired carbon taxes which add up to £20 a tonne to all the steel produced and make it more expensive than imported steel from China where there are no carbon taxes. We must wake up and smell the coffee before it’s too late and we will have destroyed a highly efficient Welsh steel industry in order to import steel from works in the far east which produce three times the carbon emissions. What will that do to reduce global warming? BYRON DAVIES

Confusion over ambulance Olympics cover Welsh Government assurances that Welsh ambulances will be crewed with experienced personnel during the Olympics next year is being questioned by crews, I have found. I pressed the First Minister on the matter, asking him if Welsh ambulances will continue to be crewed by highly experienced staff. He told me: “Absolutely. It is vitally important that we have the right level of cover in Wales, even when an event like the Olympics takes place in London.” But shortly after the First Minister gave his guarantee, I was contacted by a senior member of staff, who claimed 44 personnel were being taken off emergency vehicles across Wales and replaced with the former students from the School Of Health Science. Mayoral message Hello everyone! Another very inspiring month for my husband and I. We attended a musical celebration by Coleg Cymanedd y Dderwen – marvellous displays of young people’s musical talents. A coffee morning in the YMCA was organised by the Civic Fund to raise funds for my Mayoral Charities. I appreciate any fundraising events that can be organised in Porthcawl. The concert in the Grand Pavilion, Bridgend’s Got Talent, clearly exhibited the amazing talents that our young people have. The sausage and mash lunch in the Hi-Tide was well attended and raised large funds for Cancer Research UK. The annual lunch held by the RNLI to raise funds was also extremely successful. A coffee morning held by the U3A at the Atlantic Hotel was held to support my Mayoral Charities. I am extremely grateful to them. The Remembrance Services in Porthcawl drew the biggest crowds that have been seen.

Christmas Wish campaign Local disability and carers’ rights activists have teamed up with Carers Wales and the Wales Carers Alliance for the Christmas Wish campaign. The campaign encourages carers to send in postcards, pictures and messages to let professionals and politicians know what their wishes are for themselves and the people they care for. What moving services they both were, paying huge respects to all those servicemen and women who gave up their lives to serve their country. White Christmases White Christmases are great on cards and in songs, but I know this can be a real worry for our households. The last three winters have been particularly harsh and last December we recorded our lowest temperatures since records began. Severe weather is a huge challenge for councils, however BCBC has put together a comprehensive Winter Maintenance Plan laying out how we will salt roads, clear snow and keep traffic moving around the borough should we be affected again. This year’s plan features additional streets which will be dealt with as a priority immediately after the main highways network has been treated, taking into account centres for the emergency services, bus routes, roads leading to isolated villages, streets

Sometimes the asks of disabled people and carers may be extremely simple but can have a huge impact on people’s lives. This can include more supportive attitudes, improved awareness, better access to shops and leisure opportunities, or the provision of changing places toilets. My colleague Jane Hutt AM will be sponsoring an exhibition of Christmas Wishes as part of a Carers’ Rights Day event at the Senedd, but the campaign will continue to acon steep inclines, industrial and shopping areas, schools, approaches to cemeteries, GP surgeries and care homes. We already have 5,800 tonnes of rock salt stockpiled with plans in place if fresh supplies are needed. I’d urge you to check the council’s website in the event of a cold snap to find tips for keeping warm and well, news about school closures and other relevant information. Porthcawl firefighter honoured at recent award ceremonies On Thursday 3rd November, Crew Manger Gareth Richards from Porthcawl Fire Station was awarded his 20 year Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for meritorious service from the Chief Fire Officer and the Lord Lieutenant. Crew Manager Richards said: “This is a great honour to be awarded this medal. I joined Porthcawl station as a firefighter in 1991, and I am proud to have my commitment recognised by the brigade. I have attended hundreds of

incidents in the Porthcawl area over my 20 years service, and I would like to think I have contributed something back to the community in which I live.” Station Manager Carl Evans said: “Along with the rest of the crew at Porthcawl, they aim to be ready to respond to any fire or emergency in Porthcawl 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from their place of work or own home in their own time. The commitment Gareth has given the fire station is 100%, and as he works away from Porthcawl, he has to give up 84 hours a week of his free time to be on call to help keep the residents and visitors to Porthcawl safe.”s STATION MANAGER CARL EVANS 07919 227723

Home care worker career

Bridgend County Borough Council is urging more people to consider a career as a home care worker. The council employs over 300 home care workers who provide personal and practical support to around 800 older or disabled people throughout the county borough 365 days a year. The council currently has vacancies in its long-term service for people needing ongoing support, its specialist service for people with dementia and BridgeStart which

is short-term enabling and assessment service. Councillor Lyn Morgan, BCBC Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: “The rising numbers of people needing support to live at home for longer means we are always looking for people to join the council’s dedicated team of home care workers. “Our home care workers gain an enormous sense of personal achievement from knowing that their job is helping people to remain in their own home and contributing to a caring society. “The most important qualification you need is an interest in caring for people who have reached a time in their life when they need extra support. We can provide full training and the chance of a very rewarding career.” Find out more at www. bridgend.gov.uk or call 01656 643205. MICHELLE BOWER BCBC

DIY probate runs risk

Do spouses have any right to lottery winnings? A landmark case, that was the first of its kind, has given guidance to lawyers on how lottery winnings should be split in the event of divorce. What kind of rights do spouses now have if separating from a partner who has matched those big money balls? We often hear of what happens to assets of a marriage, such as houses, during these separations, but what happens when you or your partner have had the luck to win a cash prize during or before a divorce? This was discussed in a recent case where a hotel porter attempted to sue his former wife for a proportion of her lottery win, with which she had invested £275,000 in a home for the family in London, now worth £500,000. He argued that he was entitled to a share of the money, which is exwife had won some 10 years previously with a ticket she had bought on her own, without his knowledge.

The court indicated that if the couple operated as a syndicate whereby they purchased a ticket with joint money for the benefit of them both, then the prize would have been shared equally. However, had the wife not invested a significant proportion of her winnings into the family home, then the husband would not have been entitled to anything, despite the fact that she bought the ticket during the marriage and with income generated in the course of the marriage. The husband was awarded a lump sum of only £85,000, reflecting his share of the monies invested in the purchase of the home. With the rise in popularity of the prenuptial agreement in the UK, this is another ruling that will see couples attempting to keep their assets separate from their partners and ring fence their property from one another in case they divorce. Prenuptial agreements may shorten unpleasant divorce proceedings and save costs to both parties. However, the success of these agreements will be determined largely by the meticulous drafting of the contracts and the careful management of the circumstances in which they are signed, so specialist legal advice in this area is more essential now than ever before. It is possible to apply for probate and deal with the administration of an estate without using a solicitor but…it’s not without risks, warns specialist legal group Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE). SFE members have noticed an increase in the number of people seeking their advice because they have made a mistake. Examples include executors not properly interpreting wills, paying money to the wrong people and unnecessarily paying too much tax. Local SFE member, Mr Laith Khatib of Cannon & Smith Law Practice LLP said, “People aren’t always aware of hidden complexities and therefore they assume probate work

is straightforward. It is true that it can be, but sometimes it isn’t. Many people don’t realise that executors can be personally liable for mistakes and it is therefore crucial that they protect themselves by seeking specialist legal advice.” Mr Khatib is a specialist in the field of estates and regularly advises executors on their duties and obligations. He has helped many bereaved families to reclaim wrongly paid nursing fees and points out that the legal fees incurred by executors are usually paid by the estate. Mr Laith Khatib holds a free clinic at the Fairways Hotel in Porthcawl on alternate Thursdays from 9am–12pm. DANIELLE SMITH Cannon & Smith, see advert for details

Through Christian eyes A monthly thought from a Christian perspective… Revival: ‘When God comes and visits a place, and makes himself known.’ One of the greatest things about revival is the joy that it brings. First, is the conviction of sin. This means that when God comes close, one of the first things that a person recognises is the reality of a holy God and also the reality of sinful man. The stories of the 1904 Welsh revival tell us how people fell on their knees and asked God for forgiveness when he made himself known to them, but then after that followed the joy of being forgiven and being right with God. For many it is a total transformation. There is nothing that can satisfy like knowing God personally. Life makes sense then. It is amazing how even in the midst of trouble the joy a person can feel when they have put their trust in Jesus. The Bible tells us that in the presence of the Lord there is fullness of joy. Spending eternity with him will be the fulfilment of that, but we can know something of it now, and it comes from knowing God. May God bless you! NEIL HARVEY

Ty Elis charity cheese and wine event

A Newton Nottage Porthcawl Parish Social Group organised a cheese and wine evening at All Saints’ Church hall recently at which the Deputy Mayor, Mrs Alana Davies and the President of the Rotary Club, Mr Robert Snell, were able to attend. Beware when out walking on Christmas morning… To the west of the road we now call Water Street between Kenfig and Margam stands a large monolith close to three metres high, two metres wide and one metre in depth. Known as the Ty’n-y-Seler Maenhir this stone has been shrouded in mystery for centuries and it is said to contain supernatural powers. There is no inscription on the monolith and it is possible that this was one of many such stones in the area, with the other stones later used as building material. The stone dates to the Bronze Age or the Neolithic period and it could be a grave marker for an individual of

high status, or a boundary marker for a community. The folklore surrounding this stone is that every Christmas morning it travels to Sker to drink from the sea, making the return journey and relocating itself before the religious of the district have set out to attend the Christmas morning service. The stone leaves no trace of its movements, neither on the land nor on the beach, and a close inspection of its footings would suggest that the monolith has remained in position for thousands of years. However, no one can confirm or dispel this myth because legend states that if anyone should see the stone moving, then they will be struck dead. MANSEL JONES

Mrs Gwlays Morfydd Jones enjoying one of the activities

During November we have been very lucky to have Mrs Maureen Fargi come in and instruct our residents in a Christmas flower arranging activity. The table decorations will be sold in our Christmas Fayre on Saturday 3rd December at 2pm. We currently have a number of alterations being made here at the home and our new licensed bar will make its grand opening at our fayre in December. Feel free to join us for a tipple or two on the day. Alan Thorne was the first in a long line of guest speakers who will be in attendance here at the home. His talk on myths and mythologies was well received. A number of our

residents have attended the tea dance in the Grand Pavilion and we would like to thank the wives of the many husbands who have danced with our residents. Should you require a tour please do not hesitate to contact us on 01656 785311. We would like to wish all the readers of the Seaside News a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Fairtrade concert A wonderfully entertaining concert was held recently, to raise awareness of Fairtrade. The packed audience in Trinity, Porthcawl, thoroughly enjoyed the groups who performed: Silk

highlighted the musical talent of local young people; Bois Male Choir, Cwmavon provided a great traditional rich sound; Harmony Ladies Choir from Maesteg entertained with their lively musicality; and Gilgal bell-ringers provided a uniquely lovely sound and great fun with the surprise of sparklers accompanying the firework music. The Mayor of Porthcawl and her consort attended the evening. She spoke enthusiastically about Fairtrade, which enables people to work their way out of poverty, and assured the audience of the council’s continuing commitment to support Fairtrade. The evening was compéred by Rev Paul Floe who spoke of his experiences in Jamaica and Malawi, highlighting the poverty that exists in so many countries. This can be alleviated by Fairtrade: guaranteeing a fair and stable price for products; providing a social premium for local community

projects like provision of clean water; and long-term trading relationships to allow planning for the future. This was a joyful occasion with wonderful music but with a powerful message of how we can help to relieve poverty. ANN SHILLAKER

Lunar eclipse and bright planets If you have a clear northeast horizon you may be able to glimpse the remnants of a total eclipse of the moon as it rises just before 4pm on 10th December. Observing it may be difficult but you will have no problem in identifying the brightest planets this month! Venus is our nearest neighbour and will shine like the Christmas star in the west. It will be visible until next April and binoculars will reveal that its shape changes from a disc to a crescent during that time. Jupiter is almost as bright and can be seen high overhead most of the night.

Mars is now getting closer to us, increasing in brightness until March when it will almost rival Jupiter. At present you have to get up in the middle of the night to see it but its red colour is unmistakable. By March it will be visible all evening. Finally, the most elusive planet of all, Mercury, becomes a morning object and can be seen before sunrise in the east from mid-December. Not much larger than the moon, it’s the closest planet to the sun. It’s much brighter than you expect! CLIVE DOWN

Lions’ Christmas Tree of Light Christmas is the special time when we remember those who may no longer be with us. A wonderful way to do that, knowing that we are also helping very special causes, is to sponsor a light on a dedicated Christmas tree. In December, Bridgend Lions and St Mary’s Church in Ewenny Road, Bridgend will be setting up such a tree in the church’s foyer. Decorated with 600 white lights, it will be illuminated at a special dedication

service, open to all, on 12th December at 6pm. A light on the tree can be sponsored for a donation of £5 or more. Sponsors are sent a commemorative card and their remembrances are placed on a notice board next to the tree. Proceeds will benefit two causes, Bridgend Samaritans and the Peter Ryan Appeal for a 6 year old seriously disabled lad in need of expensive ongoing treatment. For a sponsor form ring Bridgend Lions on 0845 8339582, download one from www. bridgendlions.org.uk or pop in to St Mary’s Church. As one of

How to reduce your own deficit With the Bank of England base rate remaining at 0.5%, those with tracker and variable rate mortgages continue to enjoy low monthly repayments. However, costs continue to rise and, with inter bank lending rates rising, it is only a matter of time before this is passed on to mortgage rates, putting further pressure on family budgets. Here are some suggestions to help you through these continuing tough times. Make use of balance transfers: With some credit card providers offering an interestfree period of up to 16 months on balance transfers, it is worth taking advantage of this offer to reduce your credit card bills. Just remember that when the balance transfer period ends, your interest rate will be high, so try to pay off the debt before the interest-free period ends. Reduce your utility bills: There are a number of different websites which allow you to compare the best deals from all the leading gas and electricity providers – reducing your utility bills by as much as £275 per year. Savvy shopping: It’s well worth taking a look at price comparison web sites. For example, mysupermarket.co.uk allows you to compare the price of your weekly shopping at each of the major supermarkets. Debt repayments: Once you have reduced your monthly outgoings, try to prioritise your debts. Your mortgage should be your first priority followed by those carrying the highest interest. It is always a good idea to try to build up a rainy day fund of between three and six months’ salary which should provide a cushion should you

be unable to work due to ill health or unemployment. Finally, we would like to wish good luck to all the participants in this year’s Christmas morning swim at Sandy Bay, Porthcawl which will be raising money for Wales Air Ambulance and local good causes. Registration is between 10.45am and 11.15am with the swim starting at 11.45am, so perhaps you could come along and show your support. Finally we at One Life Financial Planning would like to wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. SHERIDAN JONES One Life Financial Planning Ltd: 01656 785700

Win tickets to see Wales in the Six Nations with our free will service With our will writing service going from strength to strength we are pleased to announce that we will be continuing this free service indefinitely. Each person has asked us the same question…what is the catch? The answer quite simply is there isn’t one. We do not name ourselves as executors, we do not insist you buy something else, we simply pay the cost of writing your will. Putting off writing your will is very easy. We often come across people who “have been meaning to do this for years”. Other people do not wish to deal with such issues that death brings, but that in itself is leaving others deal with the problem that you could easily have dealt with yourselves. We aim to make the will writing process as easy and as painless as possible. We aim to ensure that your affairs are put in order, to avoid your loved

ones any more grief after your days. To ensure your children are looked after by the people you want them looked after by, to ensure the people you want to benefit get what you want them to have. Death is something that will happen to us all one day, unfortunately none of us know when that is going to be. The horror of the accident on the M5 last month just goes to show how easily these things can happen. You can buy do-it-yourself kits from WH Smith or the Post Office for between £5 and £20, but these can be difficult to complete accurately, particularly if your financial affairs are complicated. Completing the forms wrongly could mean your will is invalid, leaving your estate ruled by the laws of intestacy or open to challenge. At Bartholomew Hawkins we arrange for you to have your will professionally written, completely free of charge, in the comfort of your own home. What’s more we will enter everybody who has written their wills with us before the 30th January into a draw to win a pair of tickets for each of Wales’ home games in the Six Nations. Nowhere is this product actually yet available other than through the company with whom we have an exclusive business arrangement. Paternity leave Recognise the rights of new fathers and what you should consider as employers. The government brought in laws last April to give working parents more choice in how they manage their baby’s first stages of life, helping to balance childcare and work commitments. The new rules mean that fathers have the right to take up to six months additional paternity leave over and above the 2 weeks previously awarded to them. With the added rules to consider, employers need to review how this will affect their procedures and establish a contingency plan should a father request leave at short notice. Although the father must give at least 8 weeks notice prior to the start date, this may not be sufficient in some cases for an effective handover of work. The government are extremely optimistic about the take-up of the additional paternity leave

and it is therefore vital that employers are prepared. They should: • Establish a procedure for dealing with requests. • Decide if they will want to contact the mother’s employer and incorporate this into the procedure if needs be. • Decide whether they will need sight of the birth certificate and how this will be incorporated into procedures. • Decide whether HMRC template forms are to be used or whether they want to compile their own. • Publicise the rights to all employees. • Liaise and advise all managers of the new rights. • Consider handover of work procedures for mothers and fathers alike. • Manage a seamless return to work for mothers and fathers alike. There are rules on the remuneration paid during these leave periods and it is imperative that employers are

Regular migraine sufferer – help at last! Turkey and toothache

1. Too many snowballs? Don’t forget your toothbrush! Even if you couldn’t resist the lure of the office party free bar, don’t forget to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes. This is the most effective way to keep your teeth healthy and will help with lager breath too. To ensure you hit the full recommended two minutes ask Santa for a power brush with a timer. 2. Floss that turkey away!

Flossing helps prevent plaque and tartar build up, which causes gum disease. Even if you think you’ve brushed out all of last night’s dinner there’s likely to be some food left which only flossing can reach. 3. Hold the fizz. Diet, lite, sugar-free...doesn’t matter! The real danger of fizzy drinks is the acid. It dissolves the enamel of your teeth making them sensitive, prone to decay and yellow. 4. Be sure to head to your dentist regularly. Every 6/12 months or as often as they recommend. We would like to wish our patients and all the Seaside News readers a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. JANETTE HARRISON

Having been a regular sufferer with migraines for several years (prescription tablets did little to alleviate them). I despaired of a future consisting of failed attempts to resolve them. Then I read about Bioflow and how it had helped other migraine suffers and I figured “why not it has to be worth a shot?” Although I must admit I was slightly sceptical at first, I purchased a Bioflow bracelet about a year ago, and what a difference it made! Within the first month of wearing it everyday, I found that although I was still getting the migraines they were far less frequent or severe. Result! I recommended it to my grandfather who suffers from diabetes and has arthritis in both his hands and knees and he too is now feeling the benefits of Bioflow reporting that

he slept better from day one! I recently purchased a Pirouette bracelet (a stronger magnetic bracelet than my previous one) and I have to say I love it as it looks more like a piece of jewellery than a medicinal aid. I look forward to a migraine-free future as a result of Bioflow and I strongly urge others to give it a go. Concerns over pesticides and GM crops • The vast majority of processed foods containing corn, soy, or canola, or any derivative thereof, are made from genetically modified ‘Roundup Ready’ crops, which have never been proven safe for human consumption. • Roundup causes birth defects and deformities in frogs and chicken embryos, according to study published last year. • Report shows that industry and regulators were aware of these effects as early as the 1980s, but kept the information hidden from the public.

38 www.seasidenews.co.uk

• Regulations are primarily based on unpublished industry studies showing glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup, is safe. • Numerous animal studies suggest reproductive problems are a common side effect of glyphosate exposure and consumption of genetically engineered (GM) Roundup Ready crops. Where do gardeners go in the winter? Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club

Not much exciting stuff to do in the garden this time of year, although it is an ideal time for pruning evergreen shrubs. If possible, dig over your ground as frost and rain will break down lumps leaving a fine tilth for seeds in the spring. Good tip – wrap terracotta pots in bubble wrap so they don’t crack in the frost (bubble

40 www.seasidenews.co.uk

wrap is also great for insulating your greenhouse!). Other than that it’s mainly maintenance work. Don’t forget to clean and oil your tools especially lawnmowers – you will be pleased next spring that you did! The best type of gardening you can do in December is to sit in the warm with a big mug of coffee (or a bottle of wine!) and read the new catalogues to plan next year’s garden! It’s almost time to get your Christmas tree. When you do cut the bottom inch of the tree to make it porous. Stand it in water it will drink 2-3 pints a day (keep topping it up) which will keep it fresh and prevent loss of the needles. Happy Christmas and remember – a garden is a thing of beauty and a job forever! CHRIS EARLY earlycefn@btinternet.com

Have you ever wondered where gardeners go in the winter? Caribbean cruise? The Florida Everglades? Under the duvet? The truth is that you will quite often find me in exactly the same place as at any other time of year – in the garden. This is the ideal time to try out any major re-vamp you may have in mind. Be confident – after all if you make a mistake just pretend you’re a doctor and bury it! Get the hard grind out of the way now so that you can properly appreciate those fleeting moments of sunshine when they finally come our way. Things like laying patios and paths. Building decks. Many of us in Wales have steeply sloping back gardens. If it can be divided up into smaller, level areas with comfortable steps you change a danger zone into

an attractive, useable area. (With the added bonus that it’s likely to add value to your home.) As for those days when it’s just not possible to get out I will either be inside doing some interior decorating - or in the gym trying to work off the odd mince pie. Very happy Christmas from Gentle Touch Homes & Gardens to all customers past, present and future. GAYNOR EDWARDS

able television, as the world embraces reality television with an overwhelming enthusiasm. Told through five different collective tales. GOOD EVENING UK

Introduces us to former husband and wife double act, Amy and Jay Jackson, Great Britain’s most treasured and respected TV couple. Behind closed doors reveals a completely different story. Amy and Jay Jackson despise each other with a vengeance; the only thing they both share apart from their two spoilt, abhorrent children, Sarah Jane and Randall, is their drug dealer. When an American producer offers them a multi-million dollar deal to star in their new US TV show, they each decide that their partnership has long exceeded its sell by date and each do everything in their path to succeed, including murder. CELEBRITY HUNTING

Introduces the reader to five former TV celebrities who have signed up for a new reality TV show. Each celebrity has been taken to a desert island where they will go on a live hunting expedition, the one thing they all have in common being, the only prey they desire to hunt is a second chance of a TV career. When they arrive they quickly discover that they are in fact not the hunters but the hunted, as they soon discover that they have been voted the most despised celebrities in TV history and they are too being hunted by various associates that they have wronged in the past, involving many twisted, comical and bizarre forms of sacrifice. To be or not to be? The way of the wandering wizards

The gift Calm this early morning Silence at its best. I hear a different sound begin One…not like all the rest. Soft and cool my breath Gentle rise of chest. The pulse beat of my heart awakening from its rest. I hear the ticking clock My quietly purring cat. The stretch and feel of life I’m listening for all that. I gladly greet the day I’m wondering what it brings, safe within the knowledge from where hope eternal springs.

Christmas time Christmas time is a special time For children everywhere, When they write their lists of little gifts And hope that Santa calls. That Santa will call with a bulging sack A sack of velvet red, Filled with sweets, which are bad for your teeth And toys to make you laugh. Christmas time is a joyous time For children everywhere, Who dream of white, snowy nights And twinkling, starry lights. They love to watch the cloudless skies With tired, drooping eyes, Hoping to catch that magical sight Of Santa Claus in flight. There surely is no question With all my heart I want to be All that the Lord would have of me If Jesus Christ is Lord at all Then I must give him all To be or not to be Contenders in life’s race We’ve gathered here at Hebron Hall To hear afresh our Saviour’s call And that we’ll one day see his face We’ll bravely run this race To be or not to be? Stag, the man they couldn’t hang

Stag’s world of rock Thanks for all the calls after last month’s article on Steve Strange. It proves he still has a huge fan base. In fact I had a call from my old mate Jay Aston from the band Jene Loves Jezebel who said he bumped into Steve last month while they were both on tour in

Belgian; it’s a small world! I will be keeping tabs on both their careers. It’s been a busy time for me with the run-up to Christmas. I have been working on a local film; I play a jazz musician who hangs himself but comes back to haunt! No doubt there’ll be a queue to hang me after some of the stuff I’ve written over the years! It’s out late next year. It’s good to see the Wallnutt in Kenfig Hill back open and having bands, best of luck to them. Did you know we have a new top-class recording studio in the area. It’s called Electric Studios and is in South Cornelly on the site where the Thee Horseshoes pub used to be. More on that next time, and I will also be reviewing the new CD by Newton songwriter Geraint Williams called Into the Sun, it sounds good. I have

Musical Highlights!

Daniel Pugh-Bevan , Lucy Millership & Sophie Howe

The Rotary Clubs of Bridgend and Porthcawl held their joint Young Musician competition on 9th November, at All Saint’s Church, Porthcawl. Seven local youngsters took part in the competition, playing instruments that included piano, bassoon, violin, organ, clarinet and even the tuba! The audience were delighted to be treated to music that ranged from Elgar, Bartok, Bach and Beethoven through to Benny Goodman and Waller. The judges for the com-

petition were John Beddoe, Raymond Driscoll and John Foley, all accomplished music specialists, with a great deal of experience in teaching and in orchestral and ensemble playing. Chairman of the judges John Beddoe commented that “it was marvellous to see the wonderful talent that we have in our schools” and that “every participant was a winner”. After much deliberation the first prize was awarded to Sophie Howe, a pianist from Porthcawl Comprehensive who played a piece by Clementi and also The Alligator Crawl by Waller. Second prize winner was Lucy Millership a bassoonist and third prize was won by Daniel Pugh-Bevan who played the church organ. Both Lucy and Daniel also attend Porthcawl Comprehensive School. Sophie and Lucy will now compete in the Rotary District 1150 Area 7 Finals on 7th December in Swansea and we wish them every success. DIANNE HUBBARD

The Gondoliers – Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl

Porthcawl is fortunate to be the home of The Mid Glamorgan Savoyards’ annual charity performance. The project brings together all that is best in community arts – committed local performers and directors, appreciative audience, supportive venue and a generous response to local and national charities. The Gondoliers, first performed in 1889, combines, as we have learnt to love, the gentle but apt satire of Gilbert’s book and lyrics with Sullivan’s witty and vibrant score. As with all G & S the plot, as improbable as ever, is the essential bedrock to the enjoyment of the evening; the clarity of diction and strong characterisation, which are features of Mid Glamorgan Savoyards’ performances, projected the story-line with confidence. It was good, again, to see new, young, faces among the principals whose vocal timing and confident projection were enhanced by

the warm vocal line of the chorus and tonal depth of the large orchestra. The Mediterranean colours of the set and costumes completed this successful performance and left audience and performers in a sunny haze of good humour and pleasure. Appropriately, The Royal British Legion together with the Save the Children Fund and Macmillan Cancer Support were the charities nominated to receive support from the performance which raised over three thousand pounds. Porthcawl & Pyle Pumas Amateur Boxing Club The new roof is now in place and our next task will be to apply for planning permission for the replacement of the windows and doors which are generously donated by Dunraven Windows. We hope that these will be in place early next year. The club is very grateful to David Brace and his team at Dunraven Windows. Once the new windows and doors have been fitted the rest of the external work will continue with the walls having new render and the old brickwork being re-grouted.

Brackla Harriers Excellent day for the Brackla Harriers at the Snowdonia Marathon. The weather was as usual for North Wales in October raining and blowing a gale, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors or spectators who turned out in their hundreds to brave this challenging event. The event was run by five of

As previously mentioned I entered the club into the Nat West Community Force which is giving £6,000 to community groups that received the most votes from members of the public. I would like to thank everyone who voted for our project and in particular I would like to say a huge thank you to Paul Chappell and Ed Ellis who helped me consistently to get the message of the need to vote out into the community and beyond. I have heard this week that the results of the winners are due to be announced on 28th November. So fingers crossed! NORAH CLARKE

compete in the world indoor five a-side football championships. Out of 27 teams I am proud to report that we achieved 9th overall. The final was between France and Brazil which was a very close game but it went down to penalties with France wining the cup. The standard of football played was excellent with many teams having international players on board. We are hoping that next year we can improve on this year’s performance and continue to be proud to represent South Wales Police.

Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club news

Porthcawl surf report

It is rare for a golfer to have a hole in one. Indeed, many golfers never achieve one and I have sat at table with three golfers and a total playing history of over 60 years, but not one had made a single hole in one. It usually takes a good shot, well hit, on line and a large element of luck. Ron Walters, a member of the Vets section, is both straight and accurate, thus increasing his prospects of enjoying such an event. Over the past three years Ron has had a trilogy of these rare birds. It might be a club record but this can not be confirmed. There are four par threes at P&K - the fourth, sixth, twelfth and fifteenth - and apparently no one has had a hole in one at all four. Ron has yet to add the fifteenth to his tally, but it would be foolish to bet against him achieving this feat. However this hole is the most difficult of the par threes, with a very tricky green. Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club welcomes all golfers. The free draining course is open when many others are closed. DYLAN WILLIAMS 01656 772446. secretary@pandkgolfclub.co.uk www.pandkgolfclub.co.uk

Here is a bold claim – but one that I’ve overheard several times this month: it’s been the best period of surf ever. This is indeed a huge call to make, but the oddest autumn in memory has just kept on giving as far as surfers are concerned. The number of days that would qualify as epic has been almost too many to count. People have been out charging Rest Bay as big as it can be cleanly surfed. Adrian Boyles has to get a mention for being out there on every occasion hooking in to bombs – as well as Rhino, who caught one of the best backhand tubes seen in the Cove a few Saturdays ago. Aside to the pumping surf, a lot of which has had the decency to show up on weekends too, the weather has refused to give in to winter. Add to this a Tsunami Cup won by George Schofield in clean head-high waves and November sunshine, and we’ve got all the elements in place to suggest it’s a golden time to be a surfer in Porthcawl. Surfers everywhere are hoping it can last in to December, as the rest of life’s priorities continue to get pushed aside for yet another perfect swell... See you in the water. the Brackla Harriers, Paul Speyer, Paul Ezard, James Thomas, Sara Birkett and myself. Paul Speyer was the first Harrier in with a time of 3 hours 26 minutes, which is amazing for such a tough marathon. Paul Ezard was next Harrier who also raised money for our charity The Chloe Bigmore Trust by gaining sponsorship for the run. He was closely followed by James Thomas a veteran of

this event, me and then Sara Birkett our only lady entrant who returned for a second time to this event. Next year is the 30th anniversary of this event and we have a very special couple of Harrier members Pat and Allan Jones who will be celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary by running this marathon next year, beats going out for a Chinese! Southerndown & Ogmore-by-Sea surf report Mid way through the month of November, us South Wales surfers have time to relax our muscles and bones because the surf has gone flat. That’s right, flat. It seems there has been huge surf nearly every day along the coast of Southerndown and Ogmore… just like the good old days. Surf quality at Southerndown at 6ft and even 2 or 3 8ft waves per tide on the big days has been memorable and outstanding. We haven’t had surf like this for a decade. I scored many surfs in the last 6 weeks where 6-8ft waves

would roll into Southerndown and peel right across the bay and then there would be nothing…no constant 4ft waves crashing the inside sections… just a leisurely paddle back out to the line up right out back. It has been just fantastic and as I write there appears to be more on the way. The weather has been varied with the surf, mostly warm and sunny with the predominant south winds bringing up warmer air from Europe. The water has chilled a little with the season but it is relatively mild. I have some lush new landscape photos (good for presents!) in the new canvas section on my www. glamorgancoast.co.uk DAVID A BATTEN

Twenty-one members of Porthcawl Runnerslife took part in the recent Cardiff half marathon, raising lots of money for charity. Leading the men home in a magnificent 44th position from a field of 15,000 runners was Geraint Lewis with Tom Davis, Terry Jones Chris Jenkins, Roger Davis, Rob Scott, Barry James, Chris Johnson and Gareth Roper making up the male contingent. The ladies were led home by Nicola Thomas, Heidi Morris, Laura Richards, Tracey Morris, Ruth Downes, Elaine Kelleher, Helen Beale, Debbie Gamblen, Jo Richards, Nicola Baker Julie Cook and Angela Walsh. On the same day a group had travelled overseas for the club’s first tour, taking part in the Tui marathon de Mallorca. In 23°C heat Gabriella Maine was the star performer taking 3rd

It’s been a positive start to the 2011-12 season for Cougars Basketball Club. Lead by player/coach Ryan Chambers, the Division 1 team opened the season with an impressive 98-64 away win over an experienced South Wales Police outfit. The Cougar defence stood firm throughout the game, forcing the Police into a number of errors and making them work extremely hard for every basket. Unfortunately, this game was followed by an uncharacteristic performance against Swansea University at home, in which the Cougars struggled to score the basketball. Despite a frantic push in the game’s final min-

utes, the Cougars eventually succumbed to a 67-76 loss. In true Cougar fashion the team immediately rebounded from this poor result, returning to form with a convincing 82-70 away win over an up-and-coming Cardiff Capitals team. The Cougars Division 2 team started the season with a close-fought 35-45 home loss to a strong Cardiff Kings team. This was followed by a 63-49 away loss to the Crickhowell Bulldogs and a tough 58-84 home loss to the West Wales Tropics. Despite the unfavourable results, a number of players logged impressive performances and will no doubt be making the step up to Division 1 basketball in the near future. Porthcawl under 12s continued their unbeaten run throughout October with six fantastic wins! On 2nd October they overcame a very stubborn Carmarthen Quins side by 12 points to nil. The following weekend they triumphed over an improving Maesteg Celtic side by 45 points to nil. Pencoed were the next side to face this ever improving U12s team and unfortunately for them, the Seaweeds were in devastating form, beating the red, white and blues by 24

Poor ball retention by the Porthcawl backs, from the first handling move of the game, allowed the Taibach winger to race over for the first try. Stung by this Porthcawl fought their way back, patiently. Their forwards soon began to dominate, allowing Tom Cogbill and Ethan Walsh to control play. Ollie Woodall rounded off a flowing movement that started deep inside Porthcawl’s own 22 for the Seaweeds first score, it was followed immediately, scored

by skipper Joe Williams who also converted both tries. The first half saw two further tries scored by winger Will Jones and another for Joe Williams. The second half started as the first had ended. Porthcawl on the attack Taibach stubbornly defending. A brace of tries for loose forward Louis Preece saw the valiant Taibach defencive line disintegrate. Rhys Thomas scored the games final try converted by Ioan Bluck. Despite occasional lapses in concentration this game was by far the best performance of the season for Porthcawl’s Under 13s with forwards and backs linking as a team sand not as individuals.

Close neighbours Tondu were the U12s next victims with Porthcawl producing one of their best performances of the season and prevailing by 52 points to nil. Next up were Ystrad Rhondda. Another huge pack for the Seaweeds to contend with but contend they did and eventually emerged victorious by 15 points to 5. IAN BUDDING

Last year, despite the snow disrupting travel arrangements, we had over 600 swimmers who braved the conditions. We have recently merged our committee with Porthcawl Buckaneers to build on each others strengths and to support two of Porthcawl’s key events, the Christmas Morning Swim and the Carnival. We have supported each other over the last couple of years so merging seemed to be the best way forward for us and Porthcawl town. Swim Treasurer, Marilyn Richards said, “We wish to thank the many local businesses and organisations, various individuals, the swimmers and the public for their support. We wish everyone a very happy and peaceful Christmas”. IAN STROUD
