WELCOME 07

Happy retirement Sister Ruth Wheeldon Thanks Dear Editor, I would wish to take the opportunity through the Seaside News of thanking everyone who voted for the Porthcawl & Pyle Pumas Amateur Boxing Club with regards to the NatWest Community Force. Charities and projects were able to apply for a Community Force award and be in with a chance of winning £6,000. To win an award in the Glamorgan Community Force area members of the public were asked to vote for a project that was

Save Salt Lake Once again it is emphasised that Porthcawl is the only town in the borough that has to finance its own regeneration project. Regrettably BCBC are selling off all Porthcawl assets – Hillsborough car park, Salt Lake and Sandy Bay – which will have a drastic effect on any future developments that Porthcawl might wish to undertake. This emphasises the fact that Salt Lake is a prime site situated near the town centre. It should not be sold and is essential that it is retained in the ownership of Porthcawl/BCBC. I suggest that Salt Lake should be developed into three sections. On the west side there should be a new, larger surgery (as requested by the doctors), a library, community centre, etc. In the centre section, a council-run swimming pool combined with a sports centre and a children’s play park. Since there is talk of closing down Coney Beach fairground it might be feasible to transfer some smaller rides over to the east side. In addition, Salt Lake could be landscaped with beautiful flowers, shrubs and several spectacular water

close to their hearts. Through the wonderful efforts of the public I was notified by the Chief Executive Officer of NatWest Bank at the end of November that our club had been lucky enough to win an award of £6,275. Thanks to the public voting for our club, Porthcawl & Pyle Pumas Amateur Boxing Club received a total of 376 votes. We are in the process of refurbishing our premises and once this is completed we will be using this award for much needed new equipment. NORAH JONES

features. The facilities provided would be of benefit to Porthcawl and attract tourists. However, BCBC regeneration plans for Salt Lake and Sandy Bay will cover the sights with a jungle of over 1,000 flats and houses. BCBC in their wisdom claim that these new properties will make Porthcawl a premier seaside resort and an attraction to tourists. The tragic situation is that, as a result of all these new properties, there will be no land left to build a swimming pool in the future and as indicated in BCBC plans, this seems to be their aim. It is equally tragic that the Porthcawl children will never have the pleasure of a swimming pool and will be penalised for evermore. The regeneration of Porthcawl is one of the most momentous projects to ever take place in the history of Porthcawl. Unfortunately during the vital discussions taking place it seems that some of our councillors were dwelling on a different planet. Let’s hope they return to Earth safely so that they can rectify the injustices imposed on Porthcawl. This is the last chance for Porthcawl residents to fight for their town. JOHN JENKINS

Dear Editor, Sister Ruth Wheeldon is due to retire after 46 years’ service with our local NHS trust. The past 30 years of service were spent as a community nursing sister in Kenfig Hill. Ruth started her training in Bridgend General Hospital in January 1966, qualifying as SRN in 1969. Following this Ruth did further training in midwifery and went

Re: Regeneration Dear Editor, I am responding to Cllr Graham Walter’s, Independent for Newton Ward, letter which appeared in your Christmas edition. In the letter he criticises the Conservative controlled group that the council tax of Porthcawl Town Council has gone up by 49% over the last four years, and goes on to say that the ratepayers have little to say in how the money is spent. What Cllr Graham Walter omits to inform your readers is that the actual increase of 49%, which is correctly calculated by him, represents £0.18 per week for Band D properties. I feel Cllr Graham Smith is playing politics with the fears of the residents of Porthcawl in quoting a figure of 49%, when, broken down, is such a small increase of 18p per household per week. Regarding not taking into consideration the views of the

on to become a midwifery sister at Bridgend General Hospital. There will be many mothers who will remember Ruth for her care and kindness and most of all appreciated her expertise when delivering our precious babies, myself included, knowing you were in safe hands. Ruth’s most recent career path has been community nursing in Kenfig Hill where she has spent so many happy years serving the local community. To stay so long takes dedication, caring for patients and their families when they are most vulnerable. Sister Ruth will be missed by her patients and colleagues now she is finally taking off her apron and going forward on a new path in life her well earned retirement. I am sure Ruth’s friends, colleagues, patients and their families would join with me in wishing Sister Ruth Wheeldon a long and happy retirement. MARY HILLMAN

residents, at the last Porthcawl Town Council meeting it was agreed to invite ideas from members of the public to be received by the end of April 2012, with how to spend £25,000 on a project which will be of benefit to the town. Also at the meeting it was confirmed that there will be no increase in the council tax for the current year, and will remain at £29 for a Band D property. CLLR DAVID DEERE

Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sger, Corneli Following a very successful Estyn inspection at the end of last term Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger can look forward with confidence to the new year... and a healthy variety of extra curricular activities! Last term saw successes in the Urdd Swimming Gala and belated congratulations are due to Osian Phinnemore, Georgia Murray, the year 3 and 4 freestyle relay team and to Angharad Jones, who represented the school, swimming backstroke in the Welsh finals at the Cardiff International Swimming Pool on 28th January. Congratulations are also due to actress Seren Morse who is soon to appear in an edition of BBC’s Casualty! Superstars Drama Club is held at the school on Thursday evenings and the new dance club ‘Dance Maniax’, run by former pupil Alisha Barron, will take place on Friday evenings. Drum and guitar lessons will have re-commenced by the time this report goes to press and the girl’s netball team is at present eagerly preparing for the Urdd competition, as is the cross country team whose first meet is at Cynffig Comprehensive School. Quite a start to a new school year! JOHN MASON

Happy New Year from St John’s School! The end of last term was a busy time for us all. Many parents and friends came to the school and to St John’s Church to enjoy performances of ‘Born in a Barn’ and our traditional carol services, and all pupils and staff enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch cooked at school. Other Christmas events were organ-

ised by the Friends of St John’s, and through their bazaar and the annual ball they raised over £4000 which will be used to further enhance resources for the children. We were delighted that Cerys Clark in Year 6 was the winner of the Porthcawl Christmas Swim mug design. The new term has started well and senior pupils in Years 10 and 11 have been sitting some GCSE modules and taking trial school exams. There has been a trip to Cardiff Museum for younger pupils and some senior classes have had geography field trips. Many pupils have been playing in football and netball matches. We are all looking forward to our annual Eisteddfod on 1st March and to the highlights concert on 5th March. We also have an open day and taster opportunities coming up this month – see advert. St Clare’s After a hectic Christmas term at St Clare’s it was almost a relief to get back into the swing of daily routine this term! Pupils returned from the Christmas break full of zest, and have ploughed their energy into a variety of activities at the school. From the academic – in January our older pupils got stuck into modular exams for GCSE and A Level courses - to sporting - as St Clare’s pupils have taken on other local schools in netball and rugby tournaments - to the dramatic, as they work hard rehearsing for the school musical which we’re excited to be putting on in March. From the stars of the stage to those of the night sky…junior school pupils recently had their go at stargazing when we welcomed a mobile planetarium

Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School A very happy New Year to you and what a busy Christmas period we have had at the school. The school fete raised over £2,500; the Year 7 astronomy project was visited by the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Welsh Government along with members of the Bridgend Astronomical Society. The school community enjoyed its Christmas concert and most importantly the official opening of our new school which

to visit us, giving us a fantastic opportunity to learn more about stars, planets and our universe. At the end of January, 6th formers on Business Studies, IT, and French courses travelled to Disneyland Paris to understand business and IT in action, as well as using the opportunity to practice their language skills. If you’d like to find out more about St Clare’s, why not head along to our open afternoon on Friday 24th February? Call the school office on 01656 789963 to check timings. JOHN AGUILA

tion and donation of gifts to Romania are just a small selection of what children enjoyed during the festive season. Now it’s time to move on to our next big event. This year we will be presenting Fiddler on the Roof from 1st – 4th February at the Grand Pavilion. Pupils and staff are busy preparing scenes and sets in Art, Design Technology and Textile departments. They are attending musical and drama rehearsals and getting caught up in the general excitement of our 34th production. ‘You can’t invent tradition’ and we are very proud of our Performing Arts tradition. Tickets are available directly from the Pavilion Box Office on 01656 815995. Unfortunately our winter sports had to be postponed in December due to the atrocious weather conditions. Pupils battled with storms, wind, rain and hail but unfortunately had to eventually give in to the severe elements. Perhaps we will have better luck in the spring! K DYKES Head Teacher

Nottage news

It has been great to welcome everyone back to school as we enter our Diamond Jubilee year. We have lots of things planned to celebrate the event, as we approach June 2012. Our school was originally established in 1873 on the site presently occupied by the CoOp supermarket and was called ‘The Old National School’. In 1952, after being delayed by the Second World War, the current building was completed and on 5th June the pupils of the old school assembled for the last time and marched to their new school. We hope to recreate the march in June and are hopeful that any pupils from 1952 who marched to the new school will join us. I’m sure this will be another successful year for our school as we start the term having been awarded Fairtrade status. I would like to thank the staff pupils and parents who have worked so hard to help us gain this award. SUE O’HALLORAN Head Teacher, www.nottageprimary. bridgend.gov.uk 01656 815540

The pupils learn a lot about aerodynamics and the effect the design they choose can have on its final speed. They research the name of their team and then look for sponsorship. Prior to the competition pupils prepare a full design folder showing how they researched their ideas. These pupils are learning about team work, commitment and communication skills. many years of working well together. We also say ‘thank you’ to Mr Staples who was acting head for the autumn term. Already, the spring term calendar is filling up fast. PC Carpenter has been busy supporting pupils in KS2 and, at the time of writing, plans are afoot for Foundation Phase pupils to make one of their muchenjoyed visits to Porthcawl Fire Station. We really appreciate these extra-curricular activities with local services; so many people devote time and energy to give our pupils enriching experiences...thank you! Years 4/5/6 pupils are excited to be coached by Ospreys players on a weekly basis and members of the school choir are being rewarded by a visit to see ‘Oliver’ in Cardiff. Team Newton continues to be motivating force in Newton, organising, amongst other events, a cake sale and a Valentine’s disco for all pupils. Again, we can’t thank this hard-working team enough for all their support. Children & young people Every January BCBC and its partners mark Holocaust Memorial Day with a special ceremony of commemoration. Local young people play a significant role and my thanks go again to Bridgend Youth Theatre and students from borough comprehensives for the incredibly mature way they always approach this sad and sensitive subject. This year’s theme was Speak Up Speak Out and I think it was one which really resonated with our young people. The horrors of the Holocaust may be a part of history but its lessons haven’t been forgotten. Students taking part in this year’s ceremony talked about the importance of speaking out against bullying. They used the famous ‘First

They Came’ poem, first written in response to the Holocaust, as their inspiration and showed true understanding for the need to give a voice to injustice via initiatives such as our peer mentoring scheme. When we consider the horrors which still exist around the world, and hate crimes such as that of Stephen Lawrence, we should also take heart from the inspirational young people on our doorstep who are willing to respond. I’m very proud to Speak Up and Speak Out about this. CLLR ALANA DAVIES

Afon y Felin news The Christmas nativity was written by our learning support staff. It was a wonderful production with all pupils taking part. Class 4 then performed the nativity at St James’ Church for the congregation at the request of Reverend Walker. Thank you to Reverend Walker also for our Christingle service at Mawdlam Church. Nicole, Jaydn and Nikita played Jingle Bells on their violins, Megan played Away in a Manger on the flute, and many children gave very confident readings. Our choir joined forces with other local schools to sing at the carol service of Kenfig Hill

They did go to the ball! Over Christmas time, an excited fifty or so pupils from Afon y Felin School, North Cornelly were treated to a performance of Cinderella at the Grand Pavilion, Porth-

Male Voice Choir at Pisgah Chapel. Congratulations to all our pupils on such polished performances, you should all be very proud! The whole school went to Porthcawl Pavilion to see the pantomime Cinderella, the juniors as guests of Porthcawl Rotary Club – many thanks to them! The children were also treated to a visiting theatre company performing Aladdin. Our Christmas fete raised a profit of over £511, many thanks to everyone who came on the day to support us. A big thank you also to Lillian, Marlene, Lorraine, Sam and Heidi, for their hard work before hand as well as on the day. A PRITCHARD

The Burrows Happy New Year to everyone and we hope you all had a lovely Christmas. Here at the Burrows preschool are busy with their ‘winter wonderland’ theme. Parents have been asked to look around their house or garden, for objects that represent winter which will go into our treasure basket. The children have opportunity to talk about and describe their objects in circle time. We are looking forward to cold winter walks, and trips which will give opportunity to talk about snow and frost. We are excited to start decorating baby room, transforming it to have a ‘wow’ factor.

The cloakroom has had a mini makeover, with an underwater theme. We are focusing more on after-school club this year, and are pleased to say that Sue from Crafty Little Creations will be coming on a regular basis. We have purchased a Wii console, which will provide educational and fun games for the older children. The area we intend to use for after-school club will soon have a lovely new laminate floor. Our plans for the club include more cookery, craft and of course games. We had our first inspection before Christmas, so watch this space for the outcome. LORRAINE, JULIE AND KIM

Delivering decent pensions in Bridgend In the Westminster Autumn Statement in November the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced that, as of April 2012, the basic state pension will increase by £5.30 per week, the largest ever cash increase for pensioners. Due to Liberal Democrat influence a clause was put into the coalition agreement that every pensioner should get a guaranteed rise in their state pension according to a set formula. This means that this year 31,080 people in Bridgend will get a rise of £5.30 a week, totalling £8,565,848 of extra money for the local economy. The Liberal Democrats have restored the link between the basic State Pension and earnings broken by Thatcher. Labour had thirteen years to do it themselves and did nothing. The earnings link alone will give the average pensioner an extra £15,000 during their retirement. Many pensioners will remember the pitiful rise in the state pension of 75p under the last Government, which many found insulting. This new flat rate will particularly benefit women and will ensure future pensioners have the guarantee of a decent future, something the Liberal Democrats have been campaigning on for years and are now delivering in Government. Spring cleaning In the aftermath of Christmas, thoughts often turn to spring cleaning and decluttering our lives. Unwanted clothing, toys

and electrical equipment can be donated to charity or recycled rather than thrown away. Charity bags are one way of donating goods, but increasingly criminal gangs have hijacked this method. A recent survey found that one in ten charity bags were bogus; goods donated would not go to a legitimate charity but to someone looking to profit from generosity. The cost to charities is estimated to be £50 million a year. There are easy steps to counter this and ensure that your belongings go to their intended destination. Does the bag or leaflet advertising collection display a registered charity number? It should also state what or who the funds are being raised for. Charity numbers can be checked through the Charity Commission, so if you have any doubts, check through www.charity-commission. gov.uk or by calling 0845 300 0218. Legitimate bags may display the blue tick logo of the Fundraising Standards Board, denoting that the organisation has signed up to industry codes of practice. Finally, if you suspect the bag or leaflet is bogus, report it via www.actionfraud. org.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. MADELEINE MOON MP

Lorry menace removed I welcome news that there is soon to be relief for the people of North Cornelly who have suffered years of heavy lorries roaring through their village. Neath Port Talbot Council has received a grant from the Welsh Government which will enable it to lower the road underneath the railway bridge

david sage carwyn jones

on Water Street. This means that the highsided lorries travelling to the Kenfig Industrial Estate will be able to leave the motorway at Margam instead of having to exit at Pyle and travel through Cornelly in order to avoid the low bridge. As Shadow minister for transport and regeneration, I understand that this solution not only protects the future of this important rail line, which is used to by-pass the South Wales main line if necessary, it also protects the jobs at Kenfig. It may also encourage more firms to locate there if they know that their lorries do not have to make a time consuming diversion through North Cornelly. And villagers are delighted the menace of the articulated lorry has, at long last, been removed from their streets. My congratulations to Cllr Jeff Tildesley and others who campaigned for so many years on this.

This contrasts with Plaid-led Caerphilly County Borough Council, where a similar FOI request found that the authority had spent no money on external support. Council staff are already furious over the way this process is being conducted, with the leader of this Labour council absolving himself of responsibility for its consequences. They will not be happy to hear that while they stand to lose money, the authority is spending on lawyers and HR specialists – expertise that the council should be retaining in-house. Bridgend council staff will want to know why a Plaidrun council can manage this process without spending money outside the council and outside the borough when this Labour-run authority cannot. They will most likely regard it as unforgiveable profligacy.

Council’s hidden cost of job evaluation process Bridgend County Borough Council has spent almost £13,000 on external services and consultants as part of its controversial job evaluation process, a Freedom of Information request submitted by Plaid Cymru has revealed. What is - according to council leader Mel Nott - an “officerled process” has so far racked up £9,686.50 in legal fees – including £6,000 to an undisclosed QC – and £3,284.50 to human resources consultancy NorthgateArinso, making a total of £12,971 over the past three years.

Could I wish all Seaside News readers a happy new year from myself and the BCBC Cabinet. I’m pleased that 2012 will be the year we enforce the new Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) in Porthcawl. A ‘DPPO’ doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue, so in plainer language it gives police (and other designated community officers) the power to confiscate alcohol from anyone who is causing a nuisance in a public place. It also means they can prosecute and fine anyone who refuses to stop drinking in public when asked. Why is this important? Well we’ve probably all experienced alcohol-fuelled nuisance in… Continued on the next page…

… Continued from previous page some way and as a council we don’t think your families should be exposed to this. Together with the police, we think alcohol control zones like this new one for Porthcawl will send out a powerful message about what’s acceptable when it comes to drinking. DPPOs are sometimes called a booze ban, but it’s not that drastic. We accept that people enjoy a sociable drink outside on occasions, especially on a sunny day. But we hope these extra measures will help make places like Porthcawl a more attractive and safe place for residents, businesses and of course tourists. COUNCILLOR MEL NOTT

On the boardwalk I was extremely pleased to hear that pedestrian counting cameras recorded more

than 60,000 people enjoying the Rest Bay boardwalk within its first 11 months. The boardwalk was originally opened in June 2010, and work is now ready to begin on the second phase which will allow the route to be extended by a further 800 metres. When complete, the extension will mean that the boardwalk will cover a full 1,100 metres of coastline and reach as far as the second kissing gate, which was installed during the initial phase. Provided as part of the Coastal Access Improvement Programme, the boardwalk extension will enable visitors and local residents - including people with limited mobility and pedestrians with prams and buggies - to enjoy even more of our stunning coastline. Good progress is also being made on the £3m harbour refurbishment project where work is going ahead on the engineering proposals. With the detailed design and

programme of works set to be finalised in the next few weeks, we hope that work can begin on site in June this year. More details will be made available following the March meeting of the Porthcawl Regeneration Forum. COUNCILLOR DAVID SAGE

Improving acoustic standards in schools It has been pleasing to see a high level of support across the Assembly for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) Cymru’s campaign for good acoustics in school, nursery and college buildings. There are more than 1,700 deaf pupils in Wales and poor acoustics within school classrooms create a barrier to learning for all children, especially for children with a hearing loss. with hearing loss to gain as much as possible from the learning environment. Work is underway by the Welsh Government to improve acoustic standards in schools, both through the 21st century schools programme and through the work of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee. Government guidance on acoustics which newly built schools in Wales required to comply with is now a condition of grant for all future schools funding contracts. It is important for accessibility issues to remain high profile and for all children to be supported in reaching their full potential at school. CARWYN JONES

Putting your affairs in order by making sure you have a properly drafted will is a fantastic way to leave your family a gift they can treasure and remember you by. Unfortunately many people are put off making a will, with recent studies showing that 60% of us don’t have a will. Many of us think that it’s something we can do at a later date, but what if the ‘right time’ to do a will never arrives? Making a will is important for a variety of reasons. It ensures that your estate and belongings pass to others in accordance with your wishes, rather than via the intestacy rules. These rules otherwise determine who will receive a share in your estate – which might mean that your belongings will not go to those closest to you. Even if you are living with your partner, but are unmarried, they will not receive anything after you have gone, leaving them with unnecessary hardship and distress. If you have raised children that you treat as your own – they will not inherit anything from you unless you make a will. A will can also ensure that you can place your children in the care of a chosen guardian that you trust, so even if you are

no longer there for them, you know you will be leaving them with the best possible care. In addition to this, by appointing an executor in your will your family will be able to deal with parts of your estate straight away, such as marketing any property that was owned. Without a will, your family will need to wait until they apply to the Probate Registry for the appropriate authority to release the property, which can take months. Another growing problem is the conflict that can arise when someone dies. Even in the most harmonious of families, this can happen when there is no will or where the deceased has made an inadequate homemade will. This may result in claims to the court by those not included in the will and can cause tension between those you care about most when you’re gone. This can avoided by making a simple choice to take proper advice on how to minimise these risks and create a professional will. As we head into the new year, making a will should certainly be one of your new year’s resolutions. At RLE Law, we have the experience and expertise to give you proper advice, ensuring that your loved ones are protected. MADELINE RAND

A very happy new year to everyone and heartfelt thanks to all those who made the club’s Christmas events such a success; Porthcawl YMCA, Trinity Church, the HiTide, Paul Fielding but most importantly the residents and visitors who generously donated both their time and money. Santa’s grotto was very busy and Santa saw nearly 400 children, but he still found time to call in on the tea party members held for some of the most senior citizens in the area. On Boxing Day, over 200 participants took part in the annual fun run which raised £1,200 for the children’s hospice Ty Hafan. All finishers received a medal and the mayor of Porthcawl, Cllr Barbara Stubbs, who also started the run, presented the winner of each category with a plaque. Already plans are well advanced for three events: the first beach clean up on Saturday 31st March at Rest Bay; the May Fayre on Monday 7th May,

If industry brought a revolution to the daily lives of the working man and woman then the railways brought a revolution to industry and to the way people spent their leisure time. In 1825 an Act of Parliament was passed paving the way for a harbour to be built at Porthcawl and for a horse-drawn tram road to link that harbour with the coal mines and ironworks of Dyffryn Llynfi. The tram road ran through Nottage, South Cornelly, Pyle and Cefn Cribwr and its success led to the creation of a railway. That railway opened on the 18th June 1850 and the Kenfig Corporation received £249 14s 6d as compensation for land acquired by the railway

this year at All Saints Church (but more about that in future articles); and the golf day on Friday 8th June at The Grove. It looks like another busy year. Once again thank you all for your support in 2011 and the club hopes 2012 will be even more successful. DAVID JONES

company. The building of the Great Western Railway was overseen by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who stayed at Pyle Inn during a period of its construction. In 1845 it took six hours to travel from the coalfields of the valleys to the port of Porthcawl. On the return journey limestone, an essential component in the iron and steel industries, was transported to the valleys from the quarries of South Cornelly. Meanwhile, Pyle Station opened in 1850 and as well as serving commerce the station also became a vital cog in the burgeoning leisure industry as the introduction of bank holidays combined with the rail network to ferry passengers to seaside resorts, like Porthcawl. An update on the blood pressure checks before Christmas. The five nurses who give up their precious time on a Saturday in December were Jayne Scofield, Mair Tucker, Heather Jenkins, Helen Strong and Sharon Jones. There were 149 blood pressure checks at Trinity Church, Porthcawl. Out of this number, 11 were referred to their GPs for further checks – we are sure those people will always be grateful. Following on from this, Lyn and Yvonne Guttridge gave up their time, which they do on an annual basis, giving a demonstration to Porthcawl Stroke Club members on making a Christmas table centre. We thank Lyn and Yvonne and are truly grateful for this event. On the 20th December the Porthcawl Stroke Club members enjoyed a carol concert, in aid of the Porthcawl Stroke Club, by the Porthcawl Male Voice Choir at the Grove. This

was indeed a joyous event, – there was plenty of singing and laughter, along with mulled wine and mince pies! What more do you want from an evening out! Through Christian eyes A monthly thought from a Christian perspective… ‘Revival’ – when God comes and makes himself known. One of the most incredible experiences that happens when we really meet God, is that we fall in love with him because

we realise how wonderful he is. Just before the Welsh revival in 1904 a young girl was stirred so much by the presence of God that she boldly said in front of all present that she loved Jesus. That was actually a catalyst for the revival. In these times God breaks right through our hardness and meets us powerfully, sometimes pouring out his love on us. After becoming a Christian I had a vision of Jesus hanging on a cross. He seemed immense and I felt very small. His eyes were full of love. In that moment, I saw clearly all the bad stuff in me and I knew that He could see it, too. Deeply ashamed, I thought that Jesus might withdraw his love from me. He didn’t. Instead, His eyes pierced me with love. It felt like someone pouring something on my head and it felt like pure love. A famous preacher by the name of Charles Finney, who had a similar experience, called it ‘liquid love’. NEIL HARVEY

Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild We were all ready to get back into routine at the start of a new year. We are hoping to arrange a second visit to the Bridgend Police Museum as a few of our ladies could not be there previously. Our twin Guild from Mansfield sent us the usual amusing report on their December meeting. With the loss of one of our members Audrey Eynon, who was also our pianist, and a member of the music group at Trinity, we have decided to purchase a copy of the new hymn book for the use of the organist at Trinity in her memory. Our speaker in January was Mr David Anderson so we knew that we were in for a wonderful afternoon of travel and we were not disappointed as we were taken around the Adriatic which was very interesting. Tools for Africa There has been a good response for our request for ‘Old Tools for Africa’. Thank you for your support. We were able to prepare and send a medium carpentry kit consisting of 46 tools, a large carpentry kit with 116 tools and a bricklaying kit with 20 tools. These were sent to Zambia for youngsters who have just completed their training. For training without tools is no good and conversely tools without training is no good either. We also sent ten haberdashery kits and three singer sewing machines to the workshops which refurbish them. We are currently prepar-

ing crates for Malawi which include automechanics, carpentry and building tools. These will be shipped early February. The workshop is based in Porthcawl. Tools can be delivered to the workshop, or to ‘Sussed’, or can be picked up. The aim of our charity is not to give ‘hand-outs, but a hand up’. We have around ten regular volunteers at the moment and meet on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. We could so with a few more volunteers… you don’t have to be skilled! The Rotary Club of Porthcawl is delighted to have been chosen to pilot a ‘Satellite Club’. We know that some people can’t commit to regularly helping others even though they would love to – perhaps due to work or family circumstances. The Porthcawl Rotary Satellite club is intended to be ‘a club within a club’ which will be able to operate more flexibly and be able to draw up its own calendar. It can be a club which suits your lifestyle! It could meet on a day and time which suits each club

member and could have a different venue, multiple venues or even no venue – members meeting in their own homes. It could set its own local agenda for undertaking one-off projects or on-going schemes which could make a difference in the local or world community. It will mean new horizons and friendships for all who join. If you, your partner or friends would like to find out more about this exciting new initiative, we have arranged an interest meeting at the Salthouse, Porthcawl at 7.30pm, Tuesday 7th February. This will be an ideal opportunity to come and chat to us and find out more about who we are, what we do and how you can make a difference to your local community. Just drop in – we’d love to see you! If you’d like more information, please get in touch with Ken Roberts 01656 721510.

“Save Morfa beach” say the friends of Morfa Morfa Beach lies between the Rivers Kenfig and Afan. The far end is occupied by the tidal harbour, but the remaining stretch continues a long history of use by walkers, joggers, bathers, surfers, cyclists, horse-riders, anglers and others. Many living in the Seaside News area have fond memories of summer days on Morfa Beach. Two ancient rightsof-way, known as footpath 92 (Longlands Lane) and 93, enable access. The beach is unusual in that a business enterprise, currently Tata Steel, holds a lease on its surface

area. Tata’s predecessors (including Corus, British Steel and the Steel Company of Wales) traditionally permitted and even welcomed the public, but there are signs that Tata might not wish this goodwill to continue. We can only speculate about possible motives, but maybe Tata simply do not appreciate the true value of the neighbourliness and community spirit shown by their predecessors. Time will tell. Meanwhile a community group has been formed to work to preserve access and rights of way. Join Save Morfa Beach (Friends of Morfa) on Facebook, and watch this space for further news. Phobos-Grunt’s objective: Mars’ 27 km wide moon, Phobos (artist’s impression)

Russian interplanetary failure The Russian Phobos probe intended for Mars was launched successfully but then the engine to put it on the correct interplanetary path failed to fire, and the craft was doomed to failure. The project was Russia’s most ambitious space venture in recent years. It had been designed to collect rock and dust samples from Mars’ moon, Phobos, and bring them back for study. The Russians had been hoping that the probe would finally bury their Martian curse. They have despatched a total of 16 missions to Mars since the 1960s. None

has successfully completed its goals, with the most recent endeavour – the sophisticated Mars-96 spacecraft – being destroyed in a failed launch. In the old days, failures could be tolerated, because the Soviet Union would launch mission after mission until each problem was fixed. But with no money for frequent launches, the Russian Federal Space Agency, which has designed and built all Russia’s interplanetary missions since the dawn of the space age, will have to change their cultures. The hope is that there will be a real shake-up but history says it won’t happen. CLIVE DOWN

Sker WI The main item on the agenda of the last meeting was a discussion on the resolutions. After some debate it was decided by a narrow majority to recommend the employment of more midwives be put forward to the NFWI. The speaker for the evening was Mr Mike Clubb who gave a very interesting and informative talk on the Bridgend Arsenal. The ROF factory was opened in 1940 at Waterton and at its busiest time employed over 30,000 personnel. The jobs that the men and women did included making detonators and packing cordite. There was a social club for the employees, who could take part in darts, cricket and even a beauty queen contest. There was also a train station on site which carried approx. 9½ mil-

lion passengers a year. The factory closed after the end of the war, and part is now being used as the Police Headquarters. The next meeting will be held on 9th February and the speaker will be the Rev. Dawn Tilt who will give a talk on work as a prison chaplain. ANN VIPOND

Newton WI The meeting started with the singing of Jerusalem. President Pearl welcomed everybody and wished all the ladies a happy new year. President Pearl cut the cake which we all enjoyed. The business was quickly gone through, and Jan reminded everyone about the trip to the King & I and our Shrove Tuesday coffee morning. Our speaker was Ceri Joseph speaking on Welsh suffragettes. The ladies learned a great deal

on how long it took women’s rights to be established. Merthyr was one of the major areas for women suffrage leading to votes and rights for women. Even Porthcawl was mentioned when after a meeting of the suffragettes set fire to a post box on Station Hill. The next meeting is the first Wednesday in February at 7pm in Gilgal Hall in Woodland Avenue, come along you will be most welcome. Any information please call Pearl 772657 or Pat 788003. Christmas floral arrangements. The concert, held at the Cornelly Community Centre was once again compèred by Pat Williams of Porthcawl. The carollers were in fine voice and the readings, prepared by Euryl Brookes provided very entertaining interludes. The evening ended with tea and mince pies and was completely enjoyed by all. The new year meeting opened with a list of forthcoming events. Teams were put forward for the Federation Whist and Darts competitions then details were announced for Kenfig’s annual Fish and Chip Supper. This will be held at the Cornelly Centre on Thursday 23rd February. The meeting closed with thanks and applause being given to Ann Randell for her brilliant demonstration of a variety of crafts. The next meeting will be on Monday 6th February when there will be a talk from ‘Care and Repair’. RUTH TATCHELL

Back to the future Not so very long ago, putting together an investment portfolio for growth was a fairly mechanical process. It involved comparing the valuation of a company’s shares with its profits to arrive at a measure called the Price Earnings Growth (PEG). Basically, a low PEG was good, achieved via high growth, a low valuation or a combination of the two. You don’t read much about PEGs these days for the simple reason that while cheap valuations are 10 a penny, high growth is a great deal scarcer. The growth that we became used to during the 1980s and 1990s was to a larger degree than we thought at the time, a product of progressively cheaper money, rising house prices and ever-increasing debt. That world has, for the foreseeable future, disappeared. Today investors find themselves in a low-growth environment in which rapidly rising earnings are the exception. So the future of investing could start to look very familiar to those who were investing pre 1980 where income, not growth, was the principal driver of returns. Over very long periods, almost all the gains from investing in the stock market can be attributed to the reinvestment of dividends and it should be noted that dividend income is a great deal more stable and predictable than economic growth, company profits and share prices. Company bosses will do almost anything to avoid cutting their dividend because they tend to pay for it with their jobs. With relatively high inflation and persistently low interest rates providing diminishing returns from both cash and government bonds, investors are

going to become increasingly attracted to companies able to offer a high and sustainable income to provide a real return in excess of the cost of living. The generation of a high and sustainable income is furthermore an indication of a company’s quality. It is no coincidence that some of the most attractive dividend yields are currently being paid by the big multinational companies that are also most exposed to the places in the world where there is actually still some decent growth, the emerging markets. Child Benefit cuts – part 1 There has been much written of late about the proposed cut backs to Child Benefit to higher rate tax payers from April 2012. Yet many articles written are both confusing and contradictory in terms of their content. Many articles state that Child Benefit is to be withdrawn if either parent is a higher rate tax payer, others state that Child Benefit will disappear if either parent earns more than £42,475. Many would consider this to be the same, however there is a vast difference. A small pension contribution is another way of extending your basic rate threshold. If you were to earn £42,500 per annum then you would be deemed a higher rate tax payer and lose your child benefit. However by simply making a one-off £20 net contribution to your pension would mean that you stay a basic rate tax payer and potentially keep your child benefit. Also consider that higher rate tax actually starts at £34,370

for the 2012/2013 tax year, with your personal allowance added. For many who receive benefits such as company car etc higher rate tax actually starts at a far earlier juncture. If you are claiming Child Benefit, then you clearly have children. If they are in preschool or nursery then consider using the Childcare Voucher Scheme – not only does this ensure that the net cost of your care is less, it means that you will have taken a pay cut and maybe stayed within the proposed limits to keep your benefits. At Bartholomew Hawkins we provide sound financial planning advice, taking into account all aspects of your financial planning requirements. Yet, there is something which affects us all which has increased by a whopping 61% over the last seven years… the average cost of a funeral. Indeed, with the current trend, a funeral costing on average £3,091 today, will rise to a figure of virtually £5,000 by 2018. Online marketing

Professional network map

Online marketing is the most cost effective form of marketing available to businesses today. Unlike traditional offline activity every stage of the online marketing sales funnel can be tracked, analysed and improved in order to ensure your busi-

ness gets the maximum return on marketing spend. Just twelve months ago many business owners were deciding if online marketing was for them. Today the question is ‘who do we get to help us and when can we start?’ A further dilemma exists for those businesses that have a website that is not delivering results and missing valuable sales opportunities. People now know that websites are the solution to delivering quality leads and sales, but only when correctly implemented and supported by successful search engine marketing. If you run a small business or know any businesses that need results now and on a budget, you ideally need a partner that specialises in small business online marketing through search engine optimisation, website design and social media. Peter Alan delight at double win in 2011 awards evening South Wales’s largest estate agents Peter Alan are certainly celebrating following their awards at the Sunday Times Estate Agents awards evening held in London recently. The company picked up the award for the best mediumsized estate in Wales for 2011 and the company’s All Wales Auction department also picked up the best auction award making it a double win for the well-known estate agency. Peter Knight, chairman of the event commented: “The winners of these awards represent the top 10% of an industry where standards are hugely variable. Consumers should have confidence that a firm displaying a winner’s medal from these awards are a cut above the rest.” For the past nine years the awards have become increasingly competitive with the standards of entries rising even higher. These awards are firmly established as the most sought-after and difficult to win in estate agency. Over 5,000 offices were represented this year, but only the best of the very best were crowned as winners. Local Porthcawl Peter Alan manager Christine Armsby commented: “2011 has not

been an easy trading year in the property industry so to have won these awards makes us immensely proud and is testament to the hard work that all our staff have put in to help our customers throughout the year, we are all delighted”. The awards ceremony was the culminating event of a rigorous and thorough judging process carried out over a four month period by a panel of industry experts who conducted an extensive review of the entrants which included hundreds of telephone interviews and mystery shopping exercises to decide the winners. Terence McHatton who manages the company’s Bridgend branch commented: “I believe that no matter how tough the market place, companies which focus on great customer service and deliver results for their clients will always succeed. These awards have been the ultimate reward at the close of 2011 which has been a challenging yet successful year for us. I would be confident to say to anyone thinking of selling, come and put us to the test.” A website listing all the winning companies with comments from the judges can be found at www.estateagencyoftheyear.com CHRIS DAVIES

Free PV solar panels for your home ? Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club

With the holidays over it’s now time to get back in the garden and work off that festive waistline! Gardeners are born optimists, looking forward to the next year, convinced our gardens will do even better! There isn’t much to do outside when the soil is rock hard but it’s an ideal time to spread out well rotted manure or garden compost, it’s much easier to walk and wheel a barrow over

frozen soil, the rain and the worms will pull it down into the earth and neither you or the barrow will be caked with mud! This will also save you precious time in the spring and keep you nice and warm on a cold day! No matter how expert we think we are we all make mistakes placing plants, there is still time to move deciduous trees and shrubs (I have to do it every year!). We have our next coffee morning in the Green Hall on Saturday 3rd March with a table top sale, hope to see you there! Interesting fact: plant life in the oceans make up 85% of all greenery on earth! Happy gardening and remember there are no gardening mistakes only experiments! CHRIS EARLY earlycefn@btinternet.com

Sustainable Wales’s PVs 4 Free project hopes to get back on track. The sudden decision at the end of 2011 by the coalition government to bring forward cuts in payments for domestic solar installations was a sickening blow to low-income families fighting fuel poverty. It also undermined community groups like those of us involved in the PVs 4 Free campaign working also to support the introduction of renewable energy. We placed the project on ‘hold’. However, we hope to have new financiers and want to get the initiative back on track. If you have a south facing roof and would like to be considered

for free panels saving your daytime electricity bills for 25 years, get in touch to express your interest as soon as possible and we will place you on our list. You will also be helping all the local groups survive as the payments for the excess energy produced will filter back into the community. Prescriptions for optimal health and weight Good news for diabetic drivers Diabetes UK Cymru today welcomed news that the DVLA has agreed to work with Diabetes UK and people with diabetes on re-writing driving licence application forms, following concerns drivers with diabetes could lose their licence because of the impact of new rules. Under the new European directive, people with diabetes who report two ‘severe’ hypo episodes in a 12 month period may have their Group 1 licence revoked. Diabetes UK has expressed concern the word ‘severe’ could be misunderstood as many hypos can be quickly and easily treated by the person themselves with an appropriate snack. After a top-level meeting with Transport Minister, Mike

Penning, last month, a working group was set up to review the impact of the new rules. Diabetes UK expressed concern about what was meant by ‘severe’ hypoglycaemia, and provided guidance on how to improve the information given to people with diabetes and healthcare professionals about the driving licence application and renewal process. The DVLA agreed to re-write the forms to clarify how severe a hypo has to be before it needs to be declared. Dai Williams, director of Diabetes UK Cymru, said: “We are pleased to have the attention of the Transport Minister and the DVLA over concerns about new rules affecting drivers with diabetes.” ALLY MACDONALD

Regardless of your current weight and state of health, know that there are certain basic tenets of optimal health and healthy weight that have always remained permanent truths. The following guidelines form the foundation of a long and healthy life, and as a sideeffect, will automatically help you achieve your ideal weight, whatever that may be. 1. Eat a healthy diet consisting primarily of fresh, whole foods, ideally organic and locally-grown. Aim to consume at least one-third of your food raw. 2. Severely limit or eliminate sugar, particularly fructose, and grains from your diet in order to optimise your insulin and leptin levels. 3. Drink plenty of clean water. 4. Manage your stress. 5. Implement a regular fitness

programme that includes a wide variety of exercises, including: high-intensity interval training, conventional aerobics, strength training, core exercises, and stretching. 6. Optimise your vitamin D levels, ideally through exposure to the sun, or by using a safe tanning bed, year-round. 7. Limit your exposure to toxins. 8. Consume healthy fats, which include saturated fats, and animal-based omega-3 fat. 9. Get plenty of sleep. Remember, leading a common sense, healthy lifestyle is your best bet to produce a healthy body and mind, and increase your longevity. SUPPLIED BY GLYN HARDWICKE

Boost your emotional health and wellbeing in 2012 January and February can mark a very difficult time for many people across the country following the Christmas experience (good and bad); returning to work or school, exams, even working out how to deal with Christmas debt. For an increasing number of people across the UK, these dark times sometimes result in death by suicide or attempted suicide. Siaradwn Ni, Let’s Talk is a groundbreaking five year programme funded by the Big Lottery which aims to raise the awareness of mental health and drive up community based resilience to life changing circumstances. Available to anyone working or living in Bridgend County Borough, Neath or Port Talbot, we aim to educate people about sui-

cide prevention, provide practical support to those affected by suicide, change people’s attitude towards mental health and boost individual resilience to dealing with challenging circumstances they might find themselves. Most people will have broken their new year’s resolutions by now. Perhaps it’s time to make a new one! Skill up, be more prepared for what could be around the corner. Call Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations for more information on 01656 810400 or email stuartburgejones@bavo.org.uk . Happy new year, we hope you had a happy holiday. Looking for a new year resolution? How about sparing a thought for your teeth in 2012? Sugar filled treats such as chocolates, fizzy drinks and acidic alcoholic drinks might agree with your tastebuds, but they pose a serious hazard to teeth and oral health. So consider making a new year resolution for 2012 by putting improved dental health as your number one priority. A dental check-up covers much more than just an examination of your teeth for decay. Did you know that this is all included in a routine dental check-up? • Checking for pain and discomfort. • Addressing your desire to improve your smile. • Examination of teeth for caries (tooth decay). • Recording measurements to assess for gum disease.

No! The great news is that some fats are really good for you. Omega 3 and Omega 6 are essential fatty acids, this means that your body cannot produce them, you have to eat them instead! You need Omega 3 and 6 to help your body use vitamins A, D, E and K (they can only be used properly when you have good fat in your diet), they can help to reduce inflammation in your joints, to lower your risk of heart disease, depression and ease rheumatoid arthritis. You can get Omega 3 and 6 from the following foods:

• Assessing the soft tissue for infections or other conditions. • Oral cancer check. • Confirmation that previous dental work is satisfactory. • Checking the jaw joints. • Analysing the occlusion (bite). • Oral hygiene and preventive advice. • Treatment planning and note taking We look forward to seeing your smiles in 2012 . Book of the month:

Death comes to Pemberley by PD James

Reservations for any of these books are free of charge so pop in to the library and see what we can offer you. We have books for all ages in a variety of formats. This year Porthcawl Library celebrates its 50th birthday. There will be a photographic exhibition in the Children’s library over the next couple of months and a birthday tea on the 23rd March at 4pm. Before that however is our I Love Reading promotion where if you take 5 books out you can borrow a DVD or CD free of charge. Hope to see you soon.

For fans of both Jane Austin and PD James comes this humorous take on life at Pemberley six years after Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage. On the eve of the annual autumn ball, the guests are preparing to retire for the night when a chaise appears, rocking down the path from Pemberley’s wild woodland. As it pulls up, Lydia Wickham, stumbles out screaming that her husband has been murdered… In this novel, despite its serious background, PD James is having some fun, playing with Jane Austen’s characters and the concepts of the traditional British crime novel. It isn’t perfect but there are some superb realisations of how some of Austen’s best loved characters would be like six years on. Enjoy.

My Bampa

Golden wedding

From out at sea From out at sea, a cold wind blows And voices heard from long ago, They speak of memories, long since past When fisherfolk once sailed these coasts.

My Bampa Trevor, He lived for ever and ever. He loved to have fun, And he loved a cream bun, He looked after his garden, And always said pardon. But then one day my family had to say, He’d gone, gone, gone away. I cried and cried, And still thought of him in pride. When the funeral came, He went up in fame. And we’ll remember him and his name. But my Bampa Trevor, Will still live forever. WILLIAM Aged 10, Kenfig Hill

Shirley and John, together now You’ve reached your golden years ‘tis long since you joined heart and hand You’ve walked through trial and tears Yet many blessings strew your way ‘Surprised by joy’ we hear you say For Jesus’ come to walk with you A three-fold cord, unbroken Golden the sun that kissed the fields To bring the ripened grain Another Son now shines on you Brings beauty out of pain And though sometimes fall shadows grey Yet he will always light your way He’ll never leave you nor forsake His three-fold cord unbroken

From out at sea, a boat is seen – A fishing boat with tattered sails, And in the light of a silvery moon

Materialising before the wizard Golden T-Bag came out of a blizzard Small drift on his doorstep with a flurry Then he came inside to tell me a story. Kettle on and raring to go The loudest object, steam to blow Golden T-Bag jumped into my mug Then my fingers gave both a hug. Golden T-Bag once inside Bubble, bubble, inviting us to dine At his place after mine So we went to his planetIt took some time!

You glimpse the sight of ‘Treligga Ho’. She floats serenely across the sea With sails, now shredded and worn with time, Upon her decks, no man is seen – But out at sea, a cold wind blows. RHIAN WHITE Porthcawl

Stag with film cast: Sarah George, Sarah Gun, and Murf

Stag’s world of rock Hey it’s good to be back after the Christmas break. I hope it went well for you. As always the Porthcawl Christmas event was a huge letdown. Where was the town’s Christmas tree and why no official switch on? Is it because they can’t find three wise men? Still, I was kept busy as I have a small part acting in a film being shot in South Wales. In fact the film team took over

the Swan in Nottage for a few mornings. I would like to say a huge thank you to Mark and Julie for making us welcome. It also gave me the chance to attend their popular open mike night run every Thursday (7.30pm) there was some good music talent on stage and a great night was had by all! Remember, all performers get a free drink so check this one out! As promised I did have a listen to Newton singer/songwriter Geraint Williams new CD and follow up to ‘So the Story Goes’. He has a David Gray feel to his songs which can’t be bad, but have a listen on www. myspace.com/geraintwilliamspage and see what you think. I hear that The Tap in Pyle has pulled the plug on the live music night, which started in 1974, perhaps it’s the state of the gloom that could hit a lot of our pubs and music venues.

Acoustic Club Happy new year to you all from the Acoustic Club, and a big thank you to all who played and supported us last year. This year we have a great new line up, starting with the amazing Fiona Barrow who returns again by popular demand on 8th March. Everyone who saw her last year will agree that she is a most entertaining performer, as she took us on a journey around the world. This will surely be a very special night. She has just finished touring the UK with Edith Piaf and The Songs, selling out in

most venues. She is returning with a singer/guitarist as a duo. She will be supported by Tim Manning of Blind River Scare, singer/songwriter/guitarist, who also tours the UK regularly. Future diary dates for the Acoustic Club are as follows: 10th May, 5th July and September tbc. Tickets are priced at £7 (£4 members only), and are available from the Grand Pavilion Box Office on 01656 815995. Why not become a member and enjoy the full years programme at discounted prices? 6 Nations 7 Marathons 3 rugby fanatics – going the extra mile for rugby and charity A trio of rugby mad fundraisers from Porthcawl are going the extra mile for charity during this year’s Six Nations Rugby Championship by attempting to run all the way from Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium to Twickenham. This epic charity run will start on the pitch of the Millennium Stadium on 19th February and the boys will run the equivalent of seven marathons in seven days - to reach Twickenham just before the start of the Wales v England RBS Six Nations match on 25th February. Mike Hnyda, Sean Whare and Darren Powell will be running the 180 miles to Twickers in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, Help for Heroes, Glaze

Brackla Harriers It has been a busy few weeks for the Brackla Harriers with the annual Pudding Race once again proving extremely popular. This annual event attracts approximately 600 runners who brave the six miles of varied terrain which includes one of the tallest sand dunes in Europe plus a refreshing dip in the river on the way back to the

Prostate and The Sandville Self Help Centre. Debbie Jones, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support said: “It never ceases to amaze me the lengths our supporters will go to raise money for Macmillan to enable us to help people affected by cancer. Everyone at Macmillan wishes Mike, Sean and Darren the best of luck with their 180 mile endeavour in support of so many good causes.” The Porthcawl runners said: “We are getting tremendous support throughout Porthcawl and we also thank the Welsh Rugby Union, their CEO Roger Lewis and Under Armour for their brilliant support and the use of the stadium.” To support Darren, Mike and Sean and help them achieve their fundraising target, please visit the event web page: www.6nations7marathons. com Look out Twickers - here they come! The Brackla Harriers also enabled the Chloe Bigmore trust to stage the Drovers Run which was also a great success and has put the race firmly back on the events calender Over the Christmas and new year many of the Harriers also took part in the Christmas Day swim, and Boxing Day run in Porthcawl, Nos Galan New Years Eve 5k race, the Prince of Wales 4.1 on New Year’s Day, the Park run in Cardiff and

Happy new year! First of all, thank you to the club members who took part in the Christmas morning swim and the Lions Boxing Day fun run. Good luck to the junior/ seniors and masters competitors taking part in the Welsh Stillwater Championships to be held at the Swansea National Pool on 18th and 19th February. Finally a special mention to our intrepid senior’s coach Darren Powell who will be undertaking yet another mission impossible when he and his running mates, Sean Whare and Mike Hynda will be aiming to complete seven marathon runs over seven consecutive days. Starting off from the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday 19th February they aim to arrive in Twickenham Rugby Stadium on Saturday 25th February in time to see Wales take on England in the Six Nations Championship. The run is in aid of the charities: Help for Heroes, Macmillan Cancer Support, Sandville Self Help Centre, and GLAZE Prostate Charity. Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club news

Henceforth he shall be known as Eddie the Eagle. Let’s explain. In golf, birdies, ie one below par for the hole, are rare for the average handicap golfer, but eagles, which are one shot better again, are almost an endangered species. On the few occasion that they are achieved it is usually by long hitting, low handicap golfers who can reach the par five holes in two shots, one less than the regulation three. For someone with a handicap of 21, such as Eddie Pedder, eagles are occurrences more likely to be read about in a golf magazine, rather than actually entered on a scorecard. The eleventh hole at P&K is a par five and from some distance back in the fairway, Eddie holed his third shot for an eagle. No one was more surprised and delighted than Eddie himself. Getting back to the name change, Eddie’s surname Pedder has a similar sound to the Welsh word “pedwar” which means four and until his eagle, Eddie was known within his society, the Terns as ‘Eddie Four’. This has now changed as mentioned above. DYLAN WILLIAMS

Southerndown & Ogmore-by-Sea surf report Hmmm…we are experiencing a six weeks flat spell this mid winter. The locals were getting excited about a new shingle bank that had built up at one of the surf breaks. It was formed perfectly and would create a fantastic 80 metres left-hander at the right stage of tide. The shingle at this beach is for ever changing and creating different waves. This time it looked spectacular. Unfortunately we had a week of strong winds and storms smashing into the coast, and when the storms had cleared… the shingle bank was gone and never surfed… That’s surfing for you. So right now it’s a waiting game again…waiting for the next clean swell. DAVID A BATTEN

Happy new year to you all. The self-funded climb up Kilimanjaro is now officially booked for 19th August this year so the team are back in full swing to get fit and have a final push on fundraising for Velindre Cancer Hospital in Cardiff. We have currently raised nearly £30,000 and hope to break this amount this year before we go. We have still been receiving donations including £550 from the Sandpiper Ladies Darts team. A big thank you. Thank you also to the Seagull pub who throughout January have donated monies from their Friday night quiz. They are also holding a comedy night for us on Saturday 4th February. We would love to see people on the night. There is also our yearly fundraiser in the Hi Tide on 31st March. More details of this will follow next month and how you can get tickets. Cougars Basketball

It was anything but a quiet Christmas period for Cougars Basketball with the club successfully running a twoday junior basketball camp

in partnership with Baglan Basketball Club and the Bridgend Youth Service & Positive Futures Scheme. The camp hosted over 30 juniors from South Wales aged between nine to 15 years and focused on fundamental skills and teamwork, and included individual and team competitions and games. With six knowledgeable coaches on hand, all with experience of representing Wales at senior level, the juniors were in great hands and all left the camp as improved players (and perhaps more importantly with big smiles on their faces!). Cougars Basketball Club has produced five internationals at junior level over the past two years, three at under-16 girls and two at under-14 boys, and currently has 12 members of its junior squad involved in Basketball Wales development squads. The team practices Wednesday evenings between 6-7.30pm and Saturday mornings 10-12pm at Cynffig

Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim : 47th Anniversary In contrast to last year’s snow, swimmers at Porthcawl’s 47th Christmas Morning Swim had comparatively spring like weather. With the tide at low water, 900 plus swimmers, many in fancy dress, walked and ran almost half a mile to the sea, whilst an estimated 3,000 spectators cheered on. Porthcawl Coastguards struggled to clear a path through the applauding spectators; Victor Davies and Chris Hughes, each with 45 plus swims to their name, led the swimmers, many were local to South Wales, others from across the

UK and several from abroad. The swim is truly a family event with many generations of the same family taking part. Chairman Nicola Willis, said: “We are grateful to all who supported our swim, the number of people that turned up was fantastic. We hope the bucket collections and swimmers sponsorship this year will help us to make some generous donations in the new year, our main beneficiary being the Wales Air Ambulance. I would like to thank all swimmers, spectators, individuals, businesses and organisations who help in so many ways to make the swim such a successful event in the town’s calendar. IAN STROUD

Porthcawl RunnersLife Geraint Lewis produced another top class performance winning the Margam Park Reindeer run. This was Geraint’s third win

Pumas Boxing News Our home show in Pyle Legion saw debutant heavyweight Sean Evans take on a Polish opponent. Topping the bill it was a dingdong affair seeing Sean run out a point’s winner, landing the cleaner punches in the exchanges. Also boxing was Charles ‘Yank’ Jones, taking on a fellow traveller from Briton Ferry, giving away a lot of experience, he lost out on a point’s decision by not applying enough pressure. A rematch is on the cards so he can right the wrong. December and January were quiet months (going to press) only light heavyweight Louis Jones managed a bout on the Nantymoel venue. It was a scrappy fight with his Pontypridd opponent, only a hand-

this year following his success at the Ammanford 10k and the St Clears 10k earlier in the season. Geraint has also finished runner up in two races and came home 10th in the Tenby marathon. Where most runners usually take a couple of weeks rest after a marathon, no such thoughts entered Geraint’s head as he entered the Beast of Bryn a week later, coming 9th in this very hilly fifteen mile event. Geraint is having a truly remarkable season and all the hard work he has put in running up the Big Dipper at Merthyr Mawr and the hill sessions at Stormy Down have paid tremendous dividends. It is not unknown for Geraint to run up the Big Dipper seven times on a Sunday morning. We are all proud of Geraint’s efforts and look forward to many more future successes. The weekend of the 11th December saw men’s and ladies teams enter the national

ful of scoring shots between the two were landed over the three rounds, Louis edging with his long straight jab. Now that the roof has finally been finished (due to the bad weather) and the windows are being fitted next month, we feel the gym is really starting to take shape. A big thank you to all the donations given not only by local businesses but also the general public, it’s all very much appreciated. PAUL CHAPPELL

Porthcawl RFC Youth Porthcawl Youth 5 Cardiff Quins 3 After a long Christmas break the young seaweeds were glad to get a game under their belt after RTB had cancelled a few days before. Cardiff Quins arrived at South Rd with a side made up of all 2nd and 3rd year players and had had a good first half to the season so Porthcawl were expecting a tough physical encounter. With a cold wind against them the young seaweeds coped very well against the bigger team and matched the visitors in all facets of the game. Both teams were rusty however a scintillating passage of play by Porthcawl with numerous off loads led to a ruck in the opponents 22. Lock Owen Wright came away with the ball and beat a number of defenders to score an excellent team try. The rest of the first half was very even with both defences working tirelessly to keep each other out. The second half started with

Porthcawl winning the territory battle however a forage into the Seaweeds half by the Quins caused a bit of pressure and the home side conceded a penalty which was successfully converted. From that moment on the game was played in the Quins half. Unfortunately a number of opportunities for the home side were missed due to handling errors close to the line and penalty points were not taken when they should have been. This can be put down to a combination of difficult conditions and ring rustiness. With time running out the Cardiff side tried to play from their own half but superb defence by the home side knocked them back every time. The final whistle blew and the young seaweeds had come through this battle knowing they had been in a game and credit must be given to the away side who were powerful throughout.. All in all an excellent game by both and one that will benefit each of them as they restart their respective league campaigns. PAUL BROWN
