A little bit of help Student appeal Dear Editor, I have lived in Porthcawl all my life, well, Nottage to be exact. This coming September I will be taking the big step to study an undergraduate music course with cello as my principal study in one of the London conservatories, Trinity Laban in Greenwich. This is an extremely exciting but also frightening prospect for me, as you can probably imagine, as the cost of living in London is far from cheap and with student fees rising this year it is going to be a struggle. For the past seven months I have been trawling the papers and websites for jobs and sending endless emails, letters and phone calls to employers but to no avail. Therefore, I am looking to arrange a concert locally to raise some funding towards my course and a local charity. For this reason I am looking for a venue with a low fee and a lot of seats. Very bold of me, I know. Also, if anyone would like to help sponsor me for my course I would be
A trip at Porthcawl Dear Editor, One Wednesday in January I was walking along John Street, Porthcawl, when I stubbed my toe and in a flash was on the ground with my face making hard contact with the paving stone. I was stunned, surprised, shocked and embarrassed. As a rule I am not an attention seeker and illogically did not want to be there. Within seconds, I was helped by a gentleman and his wife, who held my hand and tried to keep me calm and reassure me that everything would be OK. A head-rest of kitchen towels was provided by a shopper; warm clothing and a chair from a lady working in

extremely grateful. I have played in five Porthcawl Comprehensive school shows including this year’s Fiddler on the Roof, won their Senior Music Student of the year award for 2009–2010 and the South Glamorgan Festival for Young Musicians’ Best Cello Performance Cup of 2011, presented by the Rotary club of Great Britain. I help out on a weekly basis in the school’s orchestra and I am a member of the National Orchestra of Wales, Rhondda Symphony Orchestra, Four Counties Youth Orchestra and Bridgend Youth Orchestra. I was also a student in the Junior Music Access Studies Course in the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama from 2008–2011. I am a really hard worker and very conscientious – any money I raise will be much appreciated and not wasted. If anyone would like to contact me regarding venues or help with funding, my details are provided below. HANNAH THOMAS
01656 783906 wahinerips@hotmail.com Boots pharmacy was quickly provided. Caring hands and consoling advice was received. My bleeding nose soon abated. A paramedic was called by someone in the crowd who administered to my damaged face. My husband, who was at the other end of town, was found by a bystander (who herself had a walking stick aid for mobility) who walked the whole length of John Street looking for someone she had never met before. There was no question of walking on the other side of the street – everyone’s response was helpful and caring. To all those good people who helped me, I would like to say THANK YOU! MRS MARGARET GRONOW
Dear Editor, I will start by introducing myself; my name is Huw Furness born Cardiff, 22nd January 1972 with a hole in my heart (a ventricular septal defect or VSD). My parents were told that this was quite a regular occurrence and although the hole was quite a large one as I grew hopefully the hole would close up. Unfortunately this did not happen and as I grew so did the hole. My parents were then told of the long-term effects of a large ventricular septal defect. A moderate to large VSD can cause: Heart failure. Infants with large VSDs may develop heart failure because the left side of the heart pumps blood into the right ventricle in addition to its normal work of pumping blood to the body. The increased workload on the heart also increases the heart rate and the body’s demand for energy. Growth failure, especially in infancy. A baby may not be able to eat enough to keep up with his or her body’s increased energy demands. As a result, the baby may lose weight or fail to grow and develop normally. Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). The extra blood flowing through the heart can cause areas of the heart to stretch and enlarge. This can disturb the normal electrical activity of the heart, leading to fast and irregular heart rhythms. Unfortunately I was suffering from growth failure, irregular heartbeat and an enlarged heart so the decision was made to operate on me. Now, in the 1970s this was a large full open heart operation and was normally then only done on adults, but on 5th
December 1977 at Harefield Hospital Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub operated on me. Now I will get to the reason for my letter to you. For some time now wanted to do something for a heart charity and am planning to do a road rally to raise money in June 2012 (www.barcelonabangers.co.uk). I would really be gratefully if you could provide a small article to promote the event? The reason I’m contacting you is so that all the money collected from now until the end of the rally goes to the charity. To achieve this I am going to sell/get sponsors in return for advertising space on the car from companies to pay for costs like fuel ferry crossings etc. So having a story on the event and a picture of the car once it has been ‘stickered up’ with company names would be a big incentive to them as it would be great for their public image! Also if anyone would like to contribute to costs or give money to the Children’s Heart Federation please email me on huw.furness@gmail.com. I would like to take the time to thank a few people for their help and support with this so far. Dj Finesse for the £250.00 to buy the car (for info and bookings dj.finesse@btinternet.com) Wayne Stone of 1 Stop Auto for the MOT and service on the car www.motpyle.co.uk (Unit 9, Village Farm Industrial Estate, Pyle CF33 6BX, 01656 740700). Kutz & Fresh Hair Barbers for the Road Tax (Kutz-The-Barbers@email.com & fresh-hair@ email.com 0753 200 8000). And of course Mat at Seaside News for printing this and helping to promote the event. SUSSED is also proud of its volunteer help and social role.” Richard Thomas, fellow Director added: “With the spirit of reuse in mind we’d like to augment this help with donations of paint, wood, brushes, rollers, shelving, display materials etc. In short, anyone and anything useful!” The new location means that we will also need additional sales help – so what are you waiting for? Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School Porthcawl Comprehensive The school was delighted to welcome Huw Hall from STEM Cymru, together with three Cardiff University students. STEM Cymru is a European funded initiative to encourage young people into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). In keeping with the future the project for the day was the designing and making of a wind turbine. The whole of Year 9 participated over the two days and many turbines were produced. Problem solving was a key feature of the day, two or four gears, angle of blades to name but a few. The learners drilled, cut and soldered in their groups to make the turbine. Other recent activities in school have included careers interviews for Year 11 pupils, some drama workshops and a number of presentations from PC Carpenter who helps deliver the PSE programme. The Interact group has raised funds through selling pancakes and the Friends of St John’s organised a Valentine’s disco in the school’s Crampton Hall for younger pupils. year12openevening@ porthcawlschool.co.uk Alternatively you may telephone 01656 774100. Porthcawl is a traditional school with a proven track record of excellence for all in Years 12 and 13. AS and A2 results consistently compare very favourably with local and national figures.
The A2 pass rate was 99%, almost 1/3 of papers sat were an A* or A grade pass. 14 www.seasidenews.co.uk
This is what Estyn (School Inspectors) said about Sixth Form education in Porthcawl:“Teachers are well qualified and committed. There are sufficient suitably qualified and experienced staff to deliver the school’s planned curriculum effectively. Teachers in the sixth form are highly qualified, experienced and are deployed well to ensure all students are provided with every opportunity to succeed” “Sixth-form students are mature, well-motivated young adults with a wide variety of talents and interests who display confidence without arrogance and are personable and at ease with visitors to the school. Their behaviour is very good and outstanding relationships exist between students and teachers”. “Students make very good progress through their sixth-form studies and the vast majority of students stay in school for two years before progressing to further or higher education”. Students are confident in their ability to think and work independently and take a leading role in a wide range of activities in school and the local community. Their contributions are often outstanding and, through on-going work and involvement, continue beyond the students’ life in the school”. “Communication and numeracy standards are very good and the use of IT is integral to many tasks presented to the students. Standards in the use of wider key skills are often outstanding”. March 2012

Excellent news, as promised in last month’s edition… Eco-Assessor, Matthew Bunt, recently visited us and was delighted to award us our second Green Flag! There’s a massive amount of work that goes into applying for the Green Flag so huge thanks go to Mrs Donaldson and our Eco-committee who have been working so hard. Road safety continues to be a priority at Newton; the Year 5 Bike-It committee have been conscientious in fulfilling their duties while Mr Steve supports our road-safety initiatives by placing green cones outside the school fence which encourages motorists to drop off pupils

Year 5 pupils started working with Cardiff City FC education department; the 6 week placement began with a visit to the CCFC ground – most exciting! March will be a very busy month with celebrations for Saint David’s day taking pride of place. We also celebrate World Book Day by dressing up as a favourite book character and holding a week-long Book Fair…many thanks to all our parents who support us so loyally in these activities. GILL GORE

He showed films to help get the message across. A very valuable lesson! Some Year 5 and Year 6 pupils have received training to become peer mediators. They can help other pupils at break time that have a problem. The most important part of this is to be a good listener. Arwen, Charlie, Rhys and Ellie from Class 3, took part in the Aspire Conference at Treforest. They demonstrated how successful our school’s Family Learning programmes are, we are really proud! We are very sad to say goodbye to Ollie Piascik, who has returned to Poland with his family. He won’t start school until he is six, but I am sure he is enjoying himself, as they have lots of snow at the moment. Ollie will be missed by everyone. A PRITCHARD
Children & young people Did you know that smoking in cars is banned in nine out of the 10 provinces in Canada, six states in Australia and in the whole of Mauritius? Now here in Wales the Welsh Government has launched the three-year Fresh Start campaign to try and stop people smoking in cars when children are present. It aims to make people aware that smoking in cars is dangerous for passengers, particularly children and depending on how it goes it could lead to an outright ban here as well. What do you think? Some people have said a ban on smoking in cars is extreme but the medical experts tells us youngsters face a serious health risk from second-hand
The Burrows February was another busy month for us at The Burrows. Babies, toddlers and preschool made beautiful gifts to take home for St. Valentine’s Day. Crafty Little Creations are busy with our after-school club, preparing something special for Mother’s Day and the photographer from the Gazette came to take pictures for St. David’s Day. He also took a picture of our six sets of twins, which we are hoping will be a feature in the paper. I’ve thought about this and could anyone honestly say that the ‘right’ to smoke in your own vehicle is more important than youngsters’ health? I don’t think so. I can’t think of many mums and dads who would argue with that. I think this is a step in the right direction and when you consider that here in Wales 11% of 15/16 year old boys and 16% of girls smoke, a ban would set a great example too. Forty one percent of households in Wales are in fuel poverty, which is the highest in the UK. One of the main reasons has been the price hikes that the energy giants have imposed on us all over the last two years.
Staying warm The British winter remains as unpredictable as ever ranging from one of the warmest Christmas periods on record to the past few weeks of plunging temperatures and the threat of snow. What has become predictable is rising energy prices. Over the past year, it has been

Recently, most of the big six energy companies have cut the price of one fuel only. For instance, British Gas has only cut electricity prices, EDF and SWALEC have only cut gas prices. British Gas has twice as many gas-buying customers as electricity customers. EDF and SWALEC have many more customers who buy electricity than gas. That does not appear
to be a coincidence. When prices went up, gas and electricity prices rose together. That is not the case when we experience price cuts. Wholesale fuel prices have fallen from their 2011 peak by 19% for gas, and 25% for electricity, and yet we are only being offered a 5% reduction that will come into effect as winter ends, and fuel use falls.
If the energy companies were serious about playing their part to tackle fuel poverty they would reduce prices across both fuels, increase the size of the cut to reflect their falling costs, and introduce it immediately.
estimated that on average we are paying 21% more for gas and electricity. Keeping warm is essential particularly for vulnerable groups and there is no shortage of advice about switching energy suppliers to get the best deal. Often this relies on having access to the internet, which excludes large number of people who are not online. In recognition to this,
the ‘send us your bill’ service has been launch. You can send a copy of your latest energy bill with a contact telephone number to: FREEPOST USWITCH or you can call 0800 093 06 07. being. As you know, budgets are tight; we simply don’t have the millions needed to provide a 21st century leisure service. But with the support of new partners we can bring about huge improvements, retain ownership of our buildings and ensure they remain affordable. We know pricing is important which is why it will remain key within this partnership. We will
not allow users to be priced out – far from it. In fact we want to make them even more accessible. We’ve already revealed the proposed £4.2m investment in Bridgend Recreation Centre and I anticipate many more exciting, positive changes for other centres. I understand changing the way we do things can make
people nervous. As a Cabinet we’ve driven a lot of change in the last four years and made some big – and brave – choices. But I know the changes we bring for our leisure facilities will be beneficial to you, the people who use them, and your families.
north east Wales, then head west to Anglesey in Gwynedd and along the south west Wales coast before turning east towards Cardiff and Newport. With more than £1m invested in the section that passes through Bridgend County Borough, the council’s Rights of Way team has been working closely with the Welsh Government, Welsh European Funding Office, Countryside Council for Wales, the Bridgend Local Access Forum, landowners,
Porthcawl Town Council and Cornelly and Merthyr Mawr community councils to deliver the project. As both the recently created link across Locks Common and the boardwalk in Rest Bay form important sections of the route and are already proving to be very popular with visitors, I’m sure that the Wales Coast Path is going to be of huge benefit to the area.

Pyle NPT has taken much needed action on scrambler annoyance that is occurring in the nature reserve. PC Nichola McGill observed several scramblers on the reserve at 1.50pm on Sunday and called for units to help assist in an attempt to stop those individuals using scramblers illegally and also on preserved site of scientific interest. PC McGill was joined by the traffic department and NPT and managed to seize four scramblers, and seven people were issued with a sec 59 warning. This warning is recorded on the police national database and if the persons are stopped for driving/riding anti-socially or in a careless and inconsiderate manner their vehicles/bikes are to be seized to prevent further annoyance or danger to the public. PC McGill said: “I hope this sends out a positive message to the local community and users of the nature reserve that we are proactively targeting the use of off road motorbikes.” This is a terrific result and hopefully it will discourage those that intend to break the law! In 1660 the Earl of Pembroke, Lord of Kenfig, commissioned a survey of the borough. That survey discovered that only one cottage near the medieval castle was occupied. However, nineteen people rented land at Paschall Hill at 2½ old pennies an acre while a further twenty tenants held land at the nominal rent of one red rose and three peppercorns a year. The survey of 1660 also revealed that the grange at Sker, previously owned by Neath Abbey, was now in the possession of Thomas Turberville, who had enclosed the land. In the early 20th century a map was drawn, defining the boundaries of the borough as they existed in 1660. This map contains a number of landmarks, some familiar,

some lost to history. One of the features is the church of St Wenduin, which is positioned on the lower northern side of Heol Las in North Cornelly. Many of the places closely associated with Kenfig fall outside the borough, as defined in 1660. These include Sker and much of South Cornelly; also, Pyle and the Hall in North Cornelly are outside the borough boundaries. At the heart of the borough rests Kenfig Pool with its prized fishing rights, rights that were held by the burgesses of Kenfig. In 1660 the relative rents collected from the villages around Kenfig were: South Cornelly sixteen shillings, North Cornelly nine shillings ten and a half pennies, Kenfig ten shillings, Sker five shillings and Marlas four shillings four pennies. Through Christian eyes ‘Mighty revival’ – no doubt they would have been some of the words uttered by those who were in the revival that broke out in the Hebrides. The man that was involved was Duncan Campbell. In his own words he said ‘The Island of Lewis has been the scene of a very gracious movement of the Spirit. The breath of revival has been felt, and communities have been conscious of the mighty impact of God’. He also said, about the revival that ‘God

Oh, how I long for such a move of God in our community, where sin will be purged and Jesus will be known and worshiped. I need that more and more, and so do you. When the revival broke out there people were awakened in the middle of the night by the presence of God. The community came together at the church doors asking what was going on. Complex carbon compounds exist throughout the universe
Astronomers have shown that a substance commonly found throughout the universe contains a mixture of molecules having many carbon atoms in both aromatic (benzene-ring) and aliphatic (chain-like) arrangements. The compounds are so complex that their chemical structures resemble those in coal and petroleum. Since coal and oil are remnants of ancient life, such matter was thought to arise only from living organisms, but the discovery

suggests that complex carbon compounds can be synthesized in space even in the absence of life forms. The researchers investigated infrared emissions detected in interstellar space which came from simple molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Observations taken by space observatories show that the spectra cannot be explained by PAH molecules but must arise from chemical structures that are much more complex. They show that stars can make such complex compounds on extremely short time scales (weeks). Stars are ejecting it into interstellar space in the form of dust. Interestingly, the compounds in star dust are somewhat similar to some found in meteorites, so they must have been present in the early solar system, of which many meteorites are thought to be relics. Porthcawl U3A Porthcawl U3A commenced their 2012 programme of talks with Ceri Joseph who gave an informative and detail talk on the lives of Welsh suffragettes and the contribution they made to the national suffrage movement. February saw Dr David Webster present a graphic and illustrated talk on his life as a Bush Doctor with a remote Ugandan tribe hundreds of miles from anywhere in the outback of East Africa. With few drugs and almost no equipment he treated patients with all types of disease and injuries including spear wounds from attacks by cattle rustlers. With his young wife from the wilds of Surrey they raised their four children in the bush alongside poisonous snakes, scorpions, bull elephants that raided the garden and the dictator Ida Amin. Many U3A members not only left the Rest with a great admiration for Dr Webster but also his books by which he still supports the Amudat Hospital and the Pokot people. GARY VICTOR

What you should know before setting up a home with your partner So you’re relationship is going well and you’re planning to move in together – congratulations! This is a happy and exciting time for your and your partner, but few couples who are unmarried and live together realise how risky their situation could be from a legal perspective. Unmarried couples are not protected by law in the same way that married couples or civil partners are and you both must take steps to protect yourselves, and each other. Many people are under the false impression that common law marriage exists, where both people in the relationship are entitled to a fair split in the event of a break up, or the partner is entitled to what’s they already consider to be ‘theirs’ in the event of a death. Unfortunately, this is simply not the case. Sadly, in many cases this only becomes clear when people begin to look into their rights or legal protection after the relationship has ended – by which time it’s too late. For example, a partner who is not married to you will not be considered as your next of kin in the event of your death, no matter how long you have been together, unless an express written agreement, such as a Will, is made beforehand. If you and your partner have separate bank accounts you
When contacting advertisers please say you saw them in the Seaside News
will also not be entitled to automatically access the money in that account upon the death of your partner. Instead, the money in the account will become part of the deceased’s estate – meaning that you will not automatically inherit the money unless your partner has expressed that you should in their Will. Similarly, you will not automatically benefit from your partner’s pension in the event of their death. The death of a loved one is hard at the best of times, but when you need to go to court to fight for a share of your partner’s money after they’ve gone, it becomes an even more traumatic experience. At RLE Law, we can discuss these issues with you at the outset of your relationship and advise you and your partner as to the best way forward, in order to protect both of your interests. Although the decision to set up home is a happy one, there are potential pitfalls which can be avoided with careful planning – and we are happy to help. Whether you need advice on how you and your unmarried partner will legally own a property that you intend to buy, or what effect having children will have upon your legal relationship as an unmarried couple, we can assist you with any of your legal concerns. What quantitative easing means for your retirement plans Anyone using their pension fund to buy an income for retirement stands to get a lot less for their money following the Bank of England’s decision to go ahead with more quantitative easing as it means already tumbling annuity rates are set to fall further. What is an annuity? An annuity is a contract bought from an insurance company which offers to pay an income each year. Unless you are fortunate enough to have a final salary pension, you will reach retirement with a pension fund that you need to use to provide you with an income for the rest of your life. Most retirees will want a guaranteed income for the rest of their life, and will use an annuity to provide one. What is the annuity rate? This is how much the insurer will offer you as an income in return for your pension pot. In January 2012 the average annuity rate stood at 5.6%; this means that if you used a pension fund of £100,000 to buy an annuity you would have been offered a pay out of £5,600 a year on
Sort that mortgage now! The Bank of England recently decided to maintain the record-breaking run on interest rates and there’s no real prospect of this changing any time soon, as financial news shows the economy still trying to improve. So, you may think that mortgage rates will stay where they are, as surely a rise would be out of keeping with the low base rate. Well, this is not exactly how it all works and
32 www.seasidenews.co.uk
average. A few years ago you would have received much more – a similar amount in July 2008 would have bought an annuity that would pay £7,855 a year for the rest of his life. Why have rates fallen? Annuity rates are related to life expectancy: if an insurer thinks it will be paying you an income for 30 years after retiring it isn’t going to commit to paying as much each year as it would if it thought you’d only be around for 20 years. As people live longer, annuity rates fall. And what does this have to do with quantitative easing? The extra money printed by the Bank of England will be used to buy gilts, which will push up their prices. This means the return on them – the yield – will fall as a percentage of the price. All other things being equal, lower long-term yields from gilts and corporate bonds will feed through into lower annuity rates. If you are approaching retirement and will be affected by these events, please do not hesitate to call us and we will try to provide you with guidance and possible alternatives to annuity purchase.
Child Benefit cuts – part 2
One Life Financial Planning Ltd 01656 785700
From next year, child benefit is to be removed from any household which has someone earning above the higher-rate tax threshold of £42,745. The move will strip child benefit from about 1.2 million families and save the Exchequer about £1 billion a year. It will cost a family with three children about £2,500 a year. Critics say the scheme is unfair. Shadow Treasury minister Chris Leslie said: “We have repeatedly warned that the Government’s current plans to cut child benefit are unfair and highly bureaucratic. “A two-earner family each earning £40,000 - a total of £80,000 - would keep all their child benefit. But a single-earner family on £43,000 would lose it all from next year. “These ill-thought-through plans are due to hit families in less than 12 months’ time.” In an interview with the House magazine, the in-house publication for MPs, the Prime Minister was asked about the unfairness of the child benefit proposal on single-earner households. “Some people say that’s the
indeed, in recent weeks, several mortgage lenders have raised rates on the fixed rate deals. This is a reflection of the shortage of available money in the money markets, as well as the continuing problems in the Eurozone. With banks also failing to meet their obligations on lending as agreed with the Government under Project Merlin, finding a mortgage for your needs is as still difficult. It is anticipated that further lenders will also raise their rates in the coming weeks, so acting now to secure a good
rate is vital. Here at Cambria Financial’s Financial hub we have established access to all market lenders including many specialist lenders that are still lending but which are not available on the high street. unfairness of it, that you lose the child benefit if you have a higher-rate taxpayer in the family,” he said. “Two people below the level keep the benefit. So, there’s a threshold, a cliff-edge issue. “We always said we would look at the way it’s implemented and that remains the case, but I don’t want to impinge on the Chancellor’s Budget.” Mr Cameron’s comments indicate that the Government may be considering ways to help single-earner families with salaries just over the threshold. However, such a system would be complicated because it would require widespread means testing, rather than a list of higher-rate taxpayers. The Chancellor wrote to MPs in 2010 saying a more sophisticated removal of child benefit to protect single-earner households was not feasible. “The only way to assess joint income families would be to create a complex, costly and intrusive means test that would spread right up the income distribution,” he said. “Effectively that would mean abolishing child benefit, which is one of the simplest and cheapest benefits to administer.” IAN DAVIES

Search engine optimisation So, you have a new website for your business, but why aren’t people clicking in their thousands to see what you have on offer? The simple reason is that your SEO isn’t up to scratch. You can think of SEO as the gears in your nice new car - you can turn it on and sit there admiring its beauty, but until you put it into gear and start driving, no-one’s going to see it. If you have a website, you need to be able to tell people about it. There are billions of websites on the web, so you have to assume that your competitors will be working hard so that they stay ahead of you in the search engine rankings for the keywords that your potential consumers will be searching for. Back to the motoring comparison you might know how your car works, but wouldn’t
you rather a professional mechanic keeping it on the road, rather than doing a poor repair job that could cost you more in the long run? It’s the same with SEO. An investment in SEO could benefit your company for years to come. Contact South Wales Web Solutions to find out why.

Shabby chic Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club
Welcome to springtime! (Hopefully) the ground should be getting warmer now enabling us to plant hardy perennials such as delphiniums, phlox and lupins. Taking into consideration size and colour always plant them in groups of odd numbers (three, five etc) they always look better this way! An old wives’ tale says if you want to know when to sow you must take off your trousers and
sit on the ground. In the days before sophisticated means of measuring soil temperature, tender bare flesh was a good (if uncomfortable) way of finding out if it was warm enough to start spring planting! It sounds very logical to me but I doubt it would go down well over the allotments! Now is also the time to plant onion sets and garlic, putting seed potatoes to chit ready for planting next month. We have a speaker on 27th March and a coffee morning on Saturday 7th April, with a raffle and quiz; we would be pleased if you could join us. Did you know in just one teaspoon of soil there are as many bacteria as there are people on the planet, somewhere in the region of 5 billion! Happy gardening! CHRIS EARLY earlycefn@btinternet.com
Shabby chic is most definitely less shabby and more chic. It very creative, individual and romantic, taking the basic elements of a home and combining it with a touch of glamour. A good way to describe shabby chic colours is ‘chalky’ – greys and taupe’s mixed with lots and lots of white. Shabby chic furniture is always matt, always painted and combined with muted, linen covers. A touch of glamour and sparkle can then be added with crystal accessories such as chande-
liers and decanters along with black and white family photos in silver frames and fresh cut flowers in an assortment of beautiful vases for example. Shabby chic is a relaxed style through both the accents of its origins in France and through the muted colours and ‘unfinished’ look. Relaxed furniture, in turn, becomes very functional so it suits even the largest or most boisterous of families. Shabby chic home furniture is extremely easy to look after and clean which makes it an excellent choice for those who have families or other busy lifestyles. JEN NAND

Through her research into MS, Dr Wahls discovered that, for some unknown reason, in addition to the commonly known symptoms, MS patients’ brains also tend to shrink. She discovered that three nutrients in particular are essential for proper mitochondrial function: 1. Animal-based omega-3 fat 2. Creatine 3. Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Just by adding those three to her diet, her decline began to slow. But she wasn’t improving, so she continued sleuthing through the medical research in search for an answer. When she discovered the Institute for Functional Medicine, Dr Wahl began to find more clues. For the rest of the article and video, search for “beat MS” at www.mercola.com SUPPLIED BY GLYN HARDWICKE

METHOD
INGREDIENTS:
Slice the banana into 2.5cm (1 in) slices. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan and fry the banana slices, in batches, until lightly browned on each side. Set the fried bananas aside on a plate lined with kitchen paper. Add the onion to the pan and cook it for 10 minutes until soft, stirring occasionally. Return the banana slices to the pan and stir in the curry paste. Add half the coconut milk and stir well. Cook for 10 minutes over a low heat, then add the seasoning. Pour in the remaining coconut milk and let the mixture simmer until it thickens and the bananas break down a little. Garnish with coriander and serve immediately with cooked Fairtrade basmati rice. Chop roughly and cook in the remaining tablespoon of olive oil with the garlic for 2 minutes. Add the reserved soaking liquor and simmer until reduced and quite syrupy. Add the fresh mushrooms and the remaining lemon juice and season to taste. 4. Spread out a large square of baking parchment. Place the parcel on a baking tray and bake in an oven preheated to 200°C/gas mark 6 for about 45 minutes, until the artichokes are tender. Open the bag and

Happy 50th birthday Porthcawl library This month’s non-fiction choices are all biographies to give you a taste of the variety of people hidden within the jackets of our books. However, what can you remember about 1962? In 1962 Harold Macmillan was Prime Minister, John Kennedy was in the White House and Elizabeth the Second had been on the throne for 10 years. The Sunday Times became the first newspaper to launch a colour supplement and the term ‘Personal Computer’ wasn’t termed until November. New books that year included Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked this Way Comes; Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Cracked From Side

And in Porthcawl, the official opening of the new purposebuilt Porthcawl Library in Church Place in 1962, was held. It moved here from John Street and it has seen a few changes over the year, but to celebrate its 50th birthday we are holding a birthday tea from 4-6pm on the 23rd March 2012. Do join us if you can. There will also be a photographic exhibition. But don’t forget you can see how Porthcawl has changed by logging onto our website and click on ‘photographs’ on the right hand menu. Give The Devil His Due is author H G White’s first novel. It’s an exciting book, falling into the action/adventure genres and peppered with plenty of humorous opinion from the main character – Will Rees. London, 1789 A man is murdered, three others are sent to the gallows in a gross miscarriage of justice. South Wales, late 1990s
Middle-aged and stuck in a rut, Will has a reunion with some of his old school mates. A new neighbour moves in across the street and Will’s manly urges start to get the better of him. After that? Well let’s just say that mid-life crisis and a catalogue of shocking events lead to him getting roped into doing something that he probably shouldn’t! Give The Devil His Due is available for Kindle, Android, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry, PC/ Laptop/ Netbook and Windows 7 phones – price 99p. To buy a copy, simply type: ‘Free Kindle Apps’ into Google, select and download the App for your chosen device, register your new Kindle App using your Amazon account, then go to the Kindle Store (or Amazon. co.uk for iPhone users), type in: H G White, click go, and then buy Give The Devil His Due (using your Amazon account). Someone
Someone asked me What is God? I replied God is. Breath, stone light and shade. Animal, mineral mud and grass. Cloud, storm sun and moon. Fauna and flower starry sky. Vast deep ocean creator of all. Visible and invisible The, I AM. He is. I AM is God. Someone asked me Where can I find God? I said Ssshh! Sit Quiet Listen God will find you. Someone said God does not exist. I said. How are you defining God? Maybe it’s your definition that does not exist. Seek where your definition comes from. In seeking you may find. Knock and the door will open. Someone said You cannot see Gods face and live. I said maybe, But, I gaze upon reflections everywhere and I gaze upon you. CAROL DOWN Kenfig Hill

John the Baptist – God’s Voice
Weather girl
Corners I don’t care much for corners I take them very gingerly ‘Cos you never know round corners What exactly you might see Now some people they like corners Say it puts spice into their life To turn a sudden corner And see Fred with next door’s wife!
God’s voice am I To call to men, Prepare the way Make straight his paths; this is the day God comes to us. Forsake your sin To let the King of glory in God’s voice am I Yet here within my mother’s womb Helpless I lie, as in a tomb Lacking all power to speak or cry I know the King is passing by God’s voice am I I have no power of speech or word Yet know God’s message must be heard So, with the strength I can employ Within the womb – I leap for joy God’s voice is heard Matron and maiden know ‘tis done Yes, Mary’s bearing God’s own Son The baby’s leap within the womb Proclaimed his welcome. Christ is come God’s voice am I For I can speak and I can run To tell the news of God’s dear Son Though not like John’s prophetic word I too must speak for Christ my Lord PAULINE LEWIS
Porthcawl
I used to bring the forecast but Today they want the weather With sun or wind or hurricane It can be such a bother Rain I could bring in watering can Wind in a big balloon For sun I’d get a smiley face But winter comes too soon Snow I could manage with dry ice For clouds there’s cotton wool But – fearsome storms and lightning bolts? To try I’d look a fool Why can’t we have the forecast? It wouldn’t be a bother But no – we have to modernise Look out! Here comes the weather! PAULINE LEWIS

But me, I don’t like corners I once turned one very fast And landed in a heap, at the feet Of someone from my past He was tall and slim and handsome And he smelt so wealthily And from his suntanned fingers Hung a new Mercedes key He said “whoops sorry love, but hey You look like someone I once knew She was young and trim and pretty Though she looked a bit like you” So you see I don’t like corners I prefer to the long straight ride With lots of big shop doorways Where, if I want to, I can hide! Guilty love
Once upon a time I ran for the office of a poseur Behaving gently and affectedly to free burden hearts Without pay, in the name of love And that mistakenly on the outlook merit me undeserving medals of folly and crime My first year in college made me hunt for a new job As a waiter Honestly not for the love of the job, but a necessity to help me un-friend hardship A pauper of no identity, who is fond of sitting by the roadside near my new workplace, His helpless pleas were broadcast into ignored ears of lovebirds that hugged and talked about the nice treat they had This commoner, Became the epitome of attraction to my heart’s friendship After every night’s duty I paid this small boy a special visit The returns from my new work, I invested in him as pollen Believing that he will become fruitful one day To bless others that may have innocently slipped and fallen I missed my first exams in college, my fees I didn’t pay All my finances were invested in my poor little new friend I was asked to re-sit for another year I WAS PUNISHED BY LOVE Today my kid cousin made her first appearance in school I was happy; automatically I had a few hours leave from being the family’s watchman ov’r her (Sigh of relief) That is cool Surprisingly after returning later from the football field
I saw little Rose substituting the newly painted virgin wall As her plate of slate for ABC writings When the man of the house arrived He demanded the culprit of such ill-behaved act I atoned for the misdeeds of my innocent little cousin C He suspended my daily allowances to save for newM paint Y To cover the nakedness of the wall CM When the disciplinarian of the house talks, no bargain MY I WAS STARVED BY LOVE CY
I have waited so long CMY All my friends that I grew up from childhood Are all happily married now,K some of them with kids Why me: I can’t even hold a 30-seconds conversation with the opposite sex Without scratching my head I remember my first conversation with Miss Pearl I felt short of the usual vibes I had only one question to ask her: ‘Is your mom, male or female?’ After 15 seconds of silence, she quietly disappeared like vapour from my presence without a word I knew I messed up again, With all the fasting and prayers I did for the past 3 days along I HAVE BEEN DENIED BY LOVE

I tried to give my utmost… Affection Attention Compassion Passion Yet, I am induced on the guilt trip And my sweat drip Without notice, I know this feeling of me having done wrong, would soon fade away As for me I won’t stop loving, for the reasons and no reasons. The thorns and roses of love, my heart has chosen. AMOORO WILSON AYINBANGYA (WILSON ‘THEPOET’)

Porthcawl RFC Youth Porthcawl Youth 22 Nantymoel Youth 5 Porthcawl Youth welcomed a good Nantymoel side to Rest Bay in this Ospreys league encounter. With only a point separating these two sides a tough game was expected. As always at Rest Bay the elements play their part and a strong wind was in favour of Nantymoel in the first half. Both sides started brightly however it was the young Seaweeds that looked the most threatening and played a very expansive game. Good Nantymoel defence throughout the first half made life difficult for Porthcawl and it took some great individual skill from outside half Tom Bluck who scored after catching his own chip through. The young Seaweeds created a number of excellent chances however some great defence by Nantymoel kept the score to just one try. A red card for a Nantymoel player near the end of the first half seemed to galvanise the away team. For the remainder of the first half and first ten minutes
of the second half the visitors put immense pressure on the Seaweeds defence and scored a well-deserved try of their own to level the match. Having withstood the onslaught from Nantymoel the home side once again began to play expansive rugby and took the game to their opponents. Winger Josh Williams scored in the corner from superb backs play. Captain Jack Williams scored next under the posts when he charged through a number of tacklers from 10 metres out. This was converted successfully by Thomas Matthews. There were a number of further try scoring chances that we just missed and finally centre Ollie Banner scored a well taken try to end the game with a score line of 22-5 in favour of the home side. This is a very young side with two 2nd Year Youth players, 16 1st year youth players and four U16s players in the squad for the game. The coaching staff would like to thank the four U16s players who took part and made a massive contribution to the game. PAUL BROWN

Two local boys from Heronsbridge School have been selected to represent the nation in this year’s Mencap Football Team. Lloyd Warner, 18, of Newton, Porthcawl and Fraser Smith, 17, of Cefn Glas, Bridgend were both selected for this year’s senior Mencap National Team following a trial at Warwick University recently. They competed against many other football players from all over England and Wales in skill challenges and were both successful in selection for the 15 strong squad. They will represent England and Wales in the European Championships that take part in Geneva at the end of May
Pumas Boxing News Light heavyweight Louis Jones took his tally of bouts to 12 wins from 15 as he outboxed his traveller opponent in Haverfordwest. With an army of fans giving their support to the home boy Louis wasn’t fazed and went about his business in a calm manner. The opening round saw Louis pick off his foe with ease as the attacks against him were lunging, predictable hook shots trying to please his fans as he was looking for the big shot to try and force a count. In round 2 this eased as the opposition quickly tired and his fitness was tailing off badly which played into Louis hands. The last round saw the Pumas lad push him against the ropes and the referee had
2012. Mencap Sport formed its national disability football team over 30 year ago following its invitation to take part in a European Championship which is held in Switzerland every year. Each year a different level is chosen to ensure that players of all abilities get the opportunity for selection. The boys will attend a full weekend of training and warmup matches in Leeds, West Yorkshire where they will unite as the 2012 Mencap team for the first time. This takes place a few weeks prior to their departure to Switzerland for the tournament which is staged at the Bernex Stadium, home of the Swiss league team Signal FC between 25th and 27th May. They will represent England and Wales against other teams from all over Europe. Richard Howe is looking for support and sponsorship from local businesses in the area to help support these boys and to assist the Mencap team. Anyone interested is invited to contact Richard at Heronsbridge School on Bridgend (01656) 653974.
