NOTE FROM THE EDITOR... 'Tis the season for counting our blessings, for creating warm memories with friends and family, for celebrating the beginning of a New Year, rested, relaxed and focused. I wish I had room to give specific thanks by name to all of the people in my life who make what I do possible. From my immediate and extended family, to my team at Seasonal Living Trading Company (my indoor/ outdoor furniture, lighting and decorative accessories brand), to the artisans and factories who produce our products here in the USA and in far flung countries around the globe, and to the team making Seasonal Living Magazine possible, my sincerest gratitude. And to all of you, the readers of Seasonal Living Magazine, thank you. The subscription rates have tripled in 3 months, and there is no greater gift than knowing that the mission of the magazine, " to inspire you to live a life of wellness and sustainability, in harmony with the seasons, through inspiring images and articles on *off the beaten path* travel destinations, seasonal food and recipes, indoor outdoor entertaining ideas and features on the indoor outdoor design work of nationally known residential and hospitality designers" is resonating with you. I wish you and your families the happiest of holiday seasons (and if you spend it in this month's travel destination, St. Barts, please send pictures to editor@seasonalliving.com! ) and a New Year sparkling with possibilities and potential!

St. Barts: A Sybaritic Holiday Getaway
C
BY LILLIAN AFRICANO
hristopher Columbus discovered St. Barts in 1493 and named it after his brother Bartolomeo (today it’s Saint-Barthélemy). A few hundred years later, in the mid-1950s, assorted Rockefellers and Rothschilds “discovered” the island— and were followed by a stream of the world’s rich and famous. Today you’ll find more celebrities per square mile here than any other place in world. Yet in spite of visitors like Sting, Paul McCartney and Beyoncé—along with international billionaires and their mega-yachts--there is nothing tacky or flashy about St. Barts. Instead, what you’ll find on your holiday getaway is an island of uncommon natural beauty, white sandy beaches (among the best in the world) and pristine crystal blue waters. Unlike other Caribbean islands, there are no casinos here, no bus tours, no beach barbecues with steel bands, no giant cruise ships and no tacky fast food joints. (Fast food here might be a warm salted crêpe with salmon or thin-sliced ham on a warm baguette.) In short, St. Barts (known by locals as St. Barths) is a tropical paradise that evokes the glamour and luxury of the South of France. (The island is an overseas collectivity of France.)

Le Barthélemy Hotel, St. Barts
During the holiday season, St Barts is at its most festive and welcoming, as shops and yachts sparkle with holiday lights. On the dock at the Port of Gustavia, the capital, is the annual Christmas Village, where local designers and artisans show their wares, providing visitors with unique "made in St Barth" gifts and souvenirs. Tastings of local culinary specialties are also offered—and yes, Santa drops by for “Ho, Ho, Ho!” moments. Though Hurricane Irma caused devastating damage to the entire Caribbean, top resorts and spas on St. Barts have rebuilt and re-opened. The people of St. Barts continue their dedication to the wellness of their island. Trash is separated and recycled; cisterns are built to collect water; low-energy lighting is used extensively; ocean water is desalinated; underwater zones and marine life are protected; salt flats are protected; professional fishing is regulated, incentives are given for the installation of solar water heaters and solar panels—and the throwing of trash into the ocean is strictly forbidden. It’s that kind of dedication that makes St. Barts clean and safe, a getaway that is free from stress and everyday care. Le Barthélemy Hotel and Spa is a top choice for a sybaritic getaway, located beside a tranquil lagoon, with interiors bathed in light and constructed with natural materials that reflect the sea. In addition to the hotel are two villas, each with a private 55-foot infinity pool overlooking the Nature Reserve—and every service you might desire, from chef’s table dinners to private yoga classes and La Mer spa treatments (with ingredients sourced from the sea). Hotel Le Toiny is situated on 42 lush acres of beachfront and hills and consists of 14 villas, all with stunning views and private infinity-edge pools surrounded by fragrant oleanders and hibiscus. The Serenity Spa Cottage, which is also surrounded by lush vegetation, has panoramic ocean views. It’s a cozy retreat for pampering and therapeutic treatments using products by Ligne St. Barth, a unique collection incorporating locally-sourced natural oils and fragrances.

Hotel Manapany is an elegant eco-lodge (the island’s first!) appropriately located near the Nature Reserve. Without sacrificing luxury, the hotel protects the environment by producing its own water, partially producing electricity with solar panels, using only electric cars to get around, producing fresh organic ingredients in its vegetable garden and orchards, sourcing other food products locally, using only steam and natural products for cleaning—and using organic products by Dr. Hauschka for all spa treatments. Villa Marie Saint Barth is a new and stylish 23-bungalow property high on a hill on the Colombier coast, with dazzling views of the crystal-clear, almost transparent waters of Flamands Bay. French hotelier and interior designer Jocelyne Sibuet has created here an eccentric and bohemian fantasyland, with hints of colonial influence and unusual pieces from around the globe. The most dramatic accommodation is the Villa Colombier, which has a private swimming pool and offers panoramic views over the island. A temporary retreat from reality is easy here, for the beauty of the setting and the unspoiled nature of the countryside contributes to a sense of well-being— even before a visit to the spa. Developed in harmony
with the environment, the signature Pure Altitude spa line incorporates the benefits of mountain plants and minerals with antioxidant and re-mineralizing properties. Many visitors, especially celebrities, choose to stay in one of the island’s villas. A specialist company like WIMCO manages a collection of more than 300 properties featuring all levels of luxury--private pools, soaking tubs, beach or mountain locations, etc. The company can also advise visitors on how to create the perfect villa holiday. With a villa getaway, you can create your own spa treatments using the locally made Ligne St. Barth products made primarily of natural Caribbean florals and herbs. You can shop for organic fruits and veggies in local shops, cook in your own modern kitchen—and dine under the stars. Speaking of food, it’s almost impossible to get a bad meal on the island. That’s because many of the chefs at the 100+ restaurants have been French trained--and also because there is an abundance of splendid local seafood and organic produce. And yes, there are also luscious French cheeses and wines because Air France makes daily deliveries to the island. Is all that enough to tempt you this holiday season?

THE HIS TORY OF CHAMPAGNE
Fizz changes everything. While champagne is good just about any time, for many it is a holiday essential. The volatile goodness is sealed up tightly in somewhat fortified bottles (we’ve learned a thing or two over the years) waiting for just the right moment to change the direction of the evening. Learn more here about the journey from happy accident to one of the world’s most iconic drinks. Cheers to all!
Need a little more fizz in your life? Check out the FIZZ collection from Seasonal Living.

Glass molding techniques arrive allowing for uniform bottles and standardized corks. Finally, the fizz could be contained without causing explosions.
1750

1941
During the German occupation of France, champagne producers band together to protect the trade, creating the primary trade group Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) which still exists today.

A welcoming Caribbean space beautifully appointed with natural woods, modern art, and the ATHOS reclaimed teak and lightweight concrete table in gray from Seasonal Living.
Working for her parent's company, Caribbean Producers, at the start of Stephanie Tyler's career turned out to be an introduction to a lifelong connection with the hospitality industry. The company, which specializes in hospitality supply, deals primarily with hotels in the Caribbean. When it was sold to Stephanie's brother, Stephanie went to work for her mother, a prominent decorator. Stephanie's love for the work blossomed and led to opening her own company, Studio IDC, in 1998. Studio IDC is famous for its work in hospitality design and more specifically, hospitality design in the Caribbean. Recently, though, her company has taken on more and more luxury residential projects in exclusive destinations such as Jumby Bay, Antigua, and Barbados. Currently, they are working on a new Marriott Autograph hotel, which she says is part of a growing trend she sees in hotels. Big hotel brands are developing ‘boutique’ brands within their brand to offer clients a more upscale stay defined by experience and detailed design aesthetics. Working in the Caribbean may seem idyllic, but it comes with its own set of challenges. Beyond the expected struggle of explaining import duties, currency conversion rates, and transportation costs, there is the issue of finding quality subcontractors to pull off such grand projects. All of these things must be weighed to get the best result but remain within budget. Additionally, the right materials must be considered to withstand the unique weather conditions in the Caribbean. For hospitality design, the products must be durable enough to withstand frequent use, but also harsh sun, water, and corrosive salt. Stephanie looks for products made of quality materials like teak, solid mahogany, natural stone, and porcelain for their suitability to indoor/outdoor use, which is why she frequently specifies Seasonal Living products for their quality and fabrication.

P.Carreau St. Barts

Paris born Elisa Bally is a self-taught interior designer based on the island of St. Barts. Her early connection with design and decoration was the foundation for what was to come. After secondary school, Elisa went on to work in journalism (following in her parents footsteps) in France. She collaborated with television networks to create new concepts around the art of living and developed a column called "Elisa’s Decoration" for a monthly magazine. These things allowed her to combine her two passions, journalism and design. After years of world travel, Elisa settled in St. Barts where she fell in love with the Caribbean colonial architecture and the overwhelming connection to the natural environment. For Elisa, the island is her studio, fueling her creativity. "For me, the show is outside, so the interior must accompany this natural setting", she notes. This sentiment is clear to see in her work, where Elisa ‘feels’ the surroundings. She considers the sensation of wet sand, of light through a veil of aqua color, and the vibration of colors. This holistic approach to designing in the Caribbean is what draws clients to Elisa, from hotel resorts such as the Guanahani & Spa Hotel in collaboration with the architect Philippe Stouvenot to numerous private villa and yacht projects. "Living in St. Barts, where the standard of living is so high, requires an architecture which is both purified and full of good sense," explains Elisa, adding that what makes it different from continental design is that the environment of the island must be part of the project. It is essential to create harmony without a break between inside and outside. Firmly settled in St. Barts, Elisa continues to travel the globe looking for objects that she believes will harmonize with her projects or new objects to offer in her showroom/ store on the island. Surrounded by devoted artists and designers, Elisa has created a network of creativity. This network allows her to continue to beautifully harmonize luxury living in St. Barts with its glorious setting.

Archipelagos, sometimes called an island group or island chain, exist all over the world with the most commonly known being Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, the Bahamas, the British Isles, the Florida Keys, and Hawaii. While not prerequisite to the classification, most archipelagos are volcanic. Some of the islands in these clusters are the setting for magnificent ecosystems among scrolling coral reefs. St. Barts, part of the Leeward Islands archipelago, is completely surrounded by shallow coral reefs. The ecosystem is rich with marine life from anemones, urchins, sea cucumbers, and eels to turtles, conch, and a variety of colorful fish. Protecting these reefs is crucial. Coral Restoration St. Barth is committed to developing effective and affordable strategies to protect and restore the island’s reefs and thereby the ecosystems that depend on them. You can donate to the cause by visiting their site www.coralrestoration-stbarth.com. You can do even more to promote sustainability by choosing products wisely. By picking quality products that will last for decades you can reduce the amount of waste. If those products are made from sustainable materials, you get bonus points. Tables made from volcanic stone, like those in the ETNA collection from Seasonal Living, puts you at the head of the class. Each one is a work of art that never has to be covered, making them the perfect choice for luxury indoor/outdoor living.
