St. Barts: A Sybaritic Holiday Getaway

hristopher Columbus discovered St. Barts in 1493 and named it after his brother Bartolomeo (today it’s Saint-Barthélemy). A few hundred years later, in the mid-1950s, assorted Rockefellers and Rothschilds “discovered” the island— and were followed by a stream of the world’s rich and famous. Today you’ll find more celebrities per square mile here than any other place in world.

Yet in spite of visitors like Sting, Paul McCartney and Beyoncé—along with international billionaires and their mega-yachts--there is nothing tacky or flashy about St. Barts.

Instead, what you’ll find on your holiday getaway is an island of uncommon natural beauty, white sandy beaches (among the best in the world) and pristine crystal blue waters.

Unlike other Caribbean islands, there are no casinos here, no bus tours, no beach barbecues with steel bands, no giant cruise ships and no tacky fast food joints. (Fast food here might be a warm salted crêpe with salmon or thin-sliced ham on a warm baguette.)

In short, St. Barts (known by locals as St. Barths) is a tropical paradise that evokes the glamour and luxury of the South of France. (The island is an overseas collectivity of France.)

During the holiday season, St Barts is at its most festive and welcoming, as shops and yachts sparkle with holiday lights. On the dock at the Port of Gustavia, the capital, is the annual Christmas Village, where local designers and artisans show their wares, providing visitors with unique "made in St Barth" gifts and souvenirs. Tastings of local culinary specialties are also offered—and yes, Santa drops by for “Ho, Ho, Ho!” moments.

Though Hurricane Irma caused devastating damage to the entire Caribbean, top resorts and spas on St. Barts have rebuilt and re-opened. Hotel Manapany is an elegant eco-lodge (the island’s first!) appropriately located near the Nature Reserve.

British scientist, Christopher Merrett, outlines the process for adding sugar to wine for a second fermentation creating lots of bubbles.

Glass is thickened to avoid explosions.

1668

Dom Perignon arrives at Benedictine abbey to become the cellar master. He develops many new processes such as separating the skins from red grapes to create white wine.

1729

French draper, Nicolas Ruinart, launches the first champagne house after making champagne for client gifts. His bottles are so popular that he exchanges his textile business for champagne production.

1740

Glass molding techniques arrive allowing for uniform bottles and standardized corks.

Finally, the fizz could be contained without causing explosions.

1750

Moët et Chandon launches a champagne house and becomes one of the premier champagne brands of the world.

1815

Cliquot develops method for removing yeast sediment to produce crystal clear champagne by ‘riddling’. Inverting bottles in icy brine caused the yeast to freeze in the top for removal before final bottling.

1876

Louis Roederer creates Cristal champagne for Tsar Alexander II of Russia, who insisted on clear bottles to be sure nothing dangerous was hidden inside.

1900

Popularity grows after marketing efforts to show champagne as the 'must have' beverage for every important life celebration. 30 million bottles were shipped this year.

1910

Grape growers of the Champagne region revolt after wine makers turn to other regions for grapes to make up for losses from lost crops and bottling explosions.

1919

Official boundaries are drawn around the Champagne region and laws passed to proclaim that only champagne produced within the region and with grapes from the region could be truly called champagne.

1941

During the German occupation of France, champagne producers band together to protect the trade, creating the primary trade group Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) which still exists today.

2003

A British study shows the bubbles go straight to your head. Carbon dioxide in sparkling wine gets alcohol into the bloodstream faster, causing a faster buzz… and a bigger hangover.

2015

UNESCO declares the Champagne region a World Heritage Site, including the vineyards and champagne houses.

A welcoming Caribbean space beautifully appointed with natural woods, modern art, and the ATHOS reclaimed teak and lightweight concrete table in gray from Seasonal Living.

Working for her parent's company, Caribbean Producers, at the start of Stephanie Tyler's career turned out to be an introduction to a lifelong connection with the hospitality industry. The company, which specializes in hospitality supply, deals primarily with hotels in the Caribbean. When it was sold to Stephanie's brother, Stephanie went to work for her mother, a prominent decorator. Stephanie's love for the work blossomed and led to opening her own company, Studio IDC, in 1998.

Studio IDC is famous for its work in hospitality design and more specifically, hospitality design in the Caribbean. Recently, though, her company has taken on more and more luxury residential projects in exclusive destinations such as Jumby Bay, Antigua, and Barbados. Currently, they are working on a new Marriott Autograph hotel, which she says is part of a growing trend she sees in hotels. Big hotel brands are developing ‘boutique’ brands within their brand to offer clients a more upscale stay defined by experience and detailed design aesthetics.

Working in the Caribbean may seem idyllic, but it comes with its own set of challenges. Beyond the expected struggle of explaining import duties, currency conversion rates, and transportation costs, there is the issue of finding quality subcontractors to pull off such grand projects. All of these things must be weighed to get the best result but remain within budget.

Additionally, the right materials must be considered to withstand the unique weather conditions in the Caribbean. For hospitality design, the products must be durable enough to withstand frequent use, but also harsh sun, water, and corrosive salt.

Stephanie looks for products made of quality materials like teak, solid mahogany, natural stone, and porcelain for their suitability to indoor/outdoor use, which is why she frequently specifies Seasonal Living products for their quality and fabrication.

Paris born Elisa Bally is a self-taught interior designer based on the island of St. Barts. Her early connection with design and decoration was the foundation for what was to come. After secondary school, Elisa went on to work in journalism (following in her parents footsteps) in France. She collaborated with television networks to create new concepts around the art of living and developed a column called "Elisa’s Decoration" for a monthly magazine.

These things allowed her to combine her two passions, journalism and design.

After years of world travel, Elisa settled in St. Barts where she fell in love with the Caribbean colonial architecture and the overwhelming connection to the natural environment. For Elisa, the island is her studio, fueling her creativity. "For me, the show is outside, so the interior must accompany this natural setting", she notes. This sentiment is clear to see in her work, where Elisa ‘feels’ the surroundings. She considers the sensation of wet sand, of light through a veil of aqua color, and the vibration of colors. This holistic approach to designing in the Caribbean is what draws clients to Elisa, from hotel resorts such as the Guanahani & Spa Hotel in collaboration with the architect Philippe Stouvenot to numerous private villa and yacht projects.

"Living in St. Barts, where the standard of living is so high, requires an architec­ture which is both purified and full of good sense," explains Eli­sa, adding that what makes it different from continental design is that the environment of the island must be part of the project. It is essential to create harmony without a break between inside and outside.

Firmly settled in St. Barts, Elisa continues to travel the globe looking for objects that she believes will harmonize with her projects or new objects to offer in her showroom/ store on the island. Surrounded by devoted artists and designers, Elisa has created a network of creativity. This network allows her to continue to beautifully harmonize luxury living in St. Barts with its glorious setting.

Archipelagos, sometimes called an island group or island chain, exist all over the world with the most commonly known being Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, the Bahamas, the British Isles, the Florida Keys, and Hawaii. While not prerequisite to the classification, most archipelagos are volcanic.

Some of the islands in these clusters are the setting for magnificent ecosystems among scrolling coral reefs. St. Barts, part of the Leeward Islands archipelago, is completely surrounded by shallow coral reefs. The ecosystem is rich with marine life from anemones, urchins, sea cucumbers, and eels to turtles, conch, and a variety of colorful fish.

CARIBBEAN SPICED MIXED NUTS

1 lime, juice and zest

1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated

¼-½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

30 wooden skewers, 6 inches long

Ingredients: •

1 egg white

•

1 cup shredded unsweetened coconut

•

½ teaspoon liquid smoke

•

10-12 ounce package thinly sliced prosciutto, cut into long 1-inch strips

2 tablespoons brown sugar

•

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

•

3 cups raw nuts… cashews, almonds, hazelnuts 1½ teaspoons smoked paprika

Preheat oven to 375˚F.

Add shrimp to skewers, tail end first, until the tip of the skewers meets the top of the shrimp.

Roll the shrimp in the honey mixture and shake gently to remove excess.

7.

Roll the shrimp in shredded coconut and set aside.

Starting just above the tail, wrap each shrimp in one prosciutto strip ending at the top.

9.

Place wrapped shrimp on a parchment lined baking sheet with a bit of space between them.

10.

Bake for 7-10 minutes or until shrimp is opaque.

Rotate the pan once during baking.

Cool slightly before serving.

Add sugars and spices to a small bowl. Whisk to fully combine. Set aside.

Whisk egg white and liquid smoke together in a separate medium bowl until egg white is foamy.
